Hi! I’m somewhat new to dnd but I was wondering if there and homebrew dnd campaigns going on or how to join a campaign?
Hey so, I’m not necessarily new at DnD but I’m not fully experienced. I’ve always been stuck in campaigns where it’s combat focused and not much room for Role Playing. I went and done the looking for game post, cool feature. I don’t mind paying ether but, I was curious if any of yall knew a DM who was good with RP campaigns but it still had combat. Yet they don’t mind someone newer to the RP side of things. I know the combat mechanics very well just not the RP side.
Also I’m willing to play mostly any class
I’ve played
Bard’s
Clerics
Rangers
Rouges
I’d offer you a spot in my campaigns but they’re all full. Friend me and maybe I’ll see about starting a one-shot!

Are there any benifits to playing a Horizon Walker Ranger for a new player?
I mean there arent any inherent benefits granted for being new, im slightly confused on what you mean for benefits specifically for new players unless youre meaning is it a good class/subclass for a new player
The latter
Overall (excluding base ranger) the subclass doesnt have any overtly difficult mechanics to play with which makes it more noob friendly.
Detect portal is for the most part not useful in most campaigns and is a very niche ability that can be extremely useful in very specific situations.
Planar warrior is a nice little basic ability for damage increase and giving damage to overcome magical resistances.
Ethereal step is alright but would require newer players to make sure they read over the spell.
Spectral defense is also nice for single turn damage reduction.
Overall its reasonably simple but may require some reading here and there, the only thing that isnt good is the detect portal feature which is more often than not useless (a word which id rarely use for most features)
What does ethereal step even do?
Ethereal Step
At 7th level, you learn to step through the Ethereal Plane. As a bonus action, you can cast the etherealness spell with this feature, without expending a spell slot, but the spell ends at the end of the current turn.
Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
What is its use?
I do believe it can be used to get through walls by stepping to the ethereal realm
It also means you are invisible and intangible.
It’s nice that it comes back on a short rest tho.
Pre much, you just run on through, good for getting out as well
Only question I have is are melee rangers good?
They can be, it all depends on how you make your character
What would be a good way of building one?
Theres lots of different ways depends on what you want
hey anyone want to play d&d?
You can check #find-a-game to see who wants to
Hi everyone, um I'm new to d&d and I'm up all night so I wanna join my first game
Hey, new here! Dont mind me, just lurking
Feel free to take a look at #find-a-game
you can fill out a character sheet (PDF and/or paper https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/downloads/2024-character-sheet.pdf) or use one of the dnd character builders like D&D Beyond https://www.dndbeyond.com
if you want to know how to make a character, check out the free rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Most ranger features aren't ranged attack-specific, so you just need to use a melee weapon like a rapier or scimitar in place of a bow
A few good ranger melee builds also multiclass into rogue or fighter for extra damage
However if you're set on being a melee combatant, id recommend looking to fighter, rogue, monk or paladin. Ranger isn't amazing
Hello everyone, I am still very new, I tried years ago, but never really got off the ground. Any tips?
Ello legends.. I'm very new to this game
How to fill this form? Like rate my character out of 100?

Playing or DMing?
playing, i'm a player.
Biggest advice is the free rules are a lot more useful than people think they are
Ah have fun then
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
I have a dragonborn fighter already, but I will try and read the rules, got a 6yo half climbing on me
the basic rules will guide you through it step by step
Hey! Brand New!! Looking to learn the game both as a DM and as a PC and possibly a DMPC for my small friend group I wanna get going! MORE than happy to join a D&D group to play once a week or more! I’m wanting to play the Paladin class if that matters for certain groups/campains. In the Orlando, FL area! 🤗
How does dual wielding work with the extra thri-kreen arms?
quick question, do i add my spellcasting modifier to a spell damage roll in the 2024 rules if it's not explicitly stated in the spell's description?
alr ty
You only add the modifier to the damage/heal of spells if it says so in the description. Same goes for abilities. e.g second wind for fighter
Hello everyone! I just joined here. I know I have my work cut out for me as I am new to TTRPG’s, however, do you have any suggestions on where to start for a 2 person campaign? It will either be the DM and 1 PC or I will join the single PC and play the role of PC and DM.
I understand this will likely be challenging but it looks like D&D Beyond has somethings that can make it easier. Any advice you have is appreciated, thank you!
There's solo campaigns out there, though I think 1 PC is better than you being a DM and PC
As DM your campaign books are gonna list in detail about the actions and consequences of every step so it'd kind of be like watching a movie with the plot summarized in front of you at any time
So you'd have to pretend to not know which is an issue
i have a quetion
Ask.
what is the best paint to use on my dnd minitures

@lyric fjord Take a look above.
I don’t think we have a painting chat here, and I admittedly find that kind of weird.
yea
#dnd-minis #dnd-arts-and-crafts both seem to work?
I had no idea we had those.
id:customize list em all 🙂
Do you all know if there are any DM's looking to start a GOT style adventure?
have u looked in #find-a-game
I'd recommend perusing https://dndduet.com/. That's the best resource I know of for one-on-one play (AKA duet). The videos from Ginny Di (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WH0yEY5uo8) and Mystic Arts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpESs0HQGoA) cover some of the common pitfalls of duet play.
Does anyone have advice for online play? I have a laptop that is pretty basic (it is not the kind that can play any video games) and I plan to get some headphones with a mic. Suggestions for the mic/headphones would be nice so I don't accidentally waste my money on something that doesn't work again😭
Thank you for the input. I will look at those resources as well!
Can someone point me in the right direction of a community focused around FR using 2e or modified 2e rules?
I wanna do more dnd but I dont like doing random groups cause I have had bad experiences, any way to combat this?
See if there's a Gamestore or even a library that has a dnd night, playing irl is much better than online if you can
Other then that, there's not much you can do for online groups unfortunately
hello i was wondering if there was anything that could affect con saving throws ?
Like something that can give a bonus to your own?
Ah, that I can thinkthere's the mind sliver cantrip. The Bane spell. Cutting words for bard
alright i see
Hmm alright
for me im playing a paldin with weapon mastery with trident so i have a 14dc con sav throw to make a monster go prone
also cutting words doesnt affect saving throws sadly
Oh snap you're correct actually 😅
damn con rreally doesnt have anything to negate the saving throw against its
quite intresting
There's a few features that give disadvantage on saving throws in general, even if they aren't specific to Con
And you need a Eloquence bard for save reduction, not Lore
ahh i see
btw why the hell is the paladin subclass features come around so late
and why is holy nimbus so ass man
... not really a D&D Newcomers question and likely has to do with game balance more than anything
nah i am new,tho im also wondering because from what im seeing from other classes they get thier subclass earlier and from what im seeing from otehr paladin classes the paladin of devotion lvl 7 and lvl 20 subclass features dont seem too useful
All classes get their subclasses at level 3
Except in the old 2014 5e ruleset in which case yeah some got theirs earlier
ye i know that but im talking about the other subclass features not hte started ones
the lvl 3 and lvl 15 subclass features are quite good and seem to be quite useful over all
also what is considered a fiend?
Demons and devils mostly
Fiend is a creature type, it covers pretty much every devil and demon in the game
i see then so untill you are going to hell you arent doing much
Demons and devils aren't exclusive to the infernal & demonic realms
They are a classic enemy you might be facing in a campaign
Yeah, they can show up wherever depending on the DM
i guess that is fair
Do the majority of people not accept mutes into their campaign, id understand why
I don't think it's terribly common for the bulk of the table to be talking aloud and one person using text. You might look for play-by-post (PBP) games where text is the primary form of communication and play.
Many online games are voice based but you could look for Play By Post/text-based games which would be text based.
Some groups may even do primarily voice but text allowed games but that would be something to discuss with the group (and likely rarer to find then just plain text-based games)
I seee, the laziness in me wants to give up and not ask around. But I really need to find a game so I can enjoy dnd again
Plus imps and quasits (potential familiars if you're a pact of the chain warlock- but why when mini dragon?), and fiends can also be a warlock patron
StartPlaying has play by post games you can join online and filter to
I'm sure there's other places too
where can i see all the different subclasses
You’d need to own the books or be a part of a campaign that shares its books among the players to see all the subclasses.
There are a lot of them.
You can use Google to find lists of all of them or whatever, but in order to actually read them, you need to buy the books that contain them. Otherwise it's considered piracy.
Luckily if you're playing 2024, you only need to buy the PHB. 4 subclasses for each class makes 48 in total in the newer rules.
Does anyone know whats happens to ghosts if you cast a healing spell onto them?
Nothing in particular, other than the ghost being possibly healed, depending on which healing spell you used.
Cure wounds?
2014 Cure Wounds: no, 2024 Cure Wounds: yes
So this isn't some inherent undead thing, it's actually the spells that say "this does not affect undead (ghosts)".
The 2024 version of Cure Wounds does not say that anymore, so it works.
so do we just go to the find a game tab and post there? I was hoping for a more schedule based set up, or is that something that can be set up from the start?
Do you plan to play as a player or DM?
player
Type /looking-for-dm and fill out the form with your availability and preferences
Then look around #looking-for-players to find a game that suits you. It may take a bit, heads up.
thank you
New DM here, how familiar should I be with my players character sheets?
And how detailed do I make the NPC's character sheets
NPC’s shouldn’t usually have character sheets, and the former question would depend on the person. I like to know their level, class and maybe AC.
To elaborate on the first thing from Nugget, monsters and npcs use monster stat blocks. See here for an overview:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/how-to-use-a-monster#StatBlockOverview
And here for a big list:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creature-stat-blocks
They use some of the same rules as player characters, but they're deliberately made simpler to make your job as a DM easier.
At least check them over to make sure there have been no mistakes in the build part. It's also good practice to make some notes for yourself of everyone's AC, max HP, passive perception, perhaps their proficient skills.
Im concerned about misunderstanding something on their character sheet and misunderstanding something about the monsters , I'm quite concerned
And how do they get hp back after being hurt and when do they get more hp? Just whenever they level up?
?tag new hp
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
As for this, mistakes happen and it’s just a natural part of learning. You’ll have your monster stat blocks in front of you usually, and as for players it’s up to them to know their abilities. You can learn the key features of each class though, and work from there (I recommend specifically sneak attack)
Sneak attack, do all classes have that?
Nope! Just Rogue
What you’re thinking of is likely the Surprised Condition
(The effects of which depends on your gameplay ruleset)
Do you know which classes your party are?
Hey im a relatively new player i checked the looking for player but I couldn’t find a under 18 game where should I post about that
Not much to be done about it but to keep your eyes open, I'm afraid. Meanwhile:
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Can post in #looking-for-dm but read #find-a-game first it has an explanation for it
Had our first DnD session a week ago (had an absolute blast!), and I am starting to feel like I might have bricked my Paladin
For starters, I picked "Protection" for my Fghting Style feat at lvl2, since it was my first time with DnD and I didnt want to go too wide with learning things from Cleric on top of Paladin so that I can grasp my kit better
For another, with the 5.5e changes to Divine Smite to have it consume a bonus action and a spell slot, I'm realising now that my resources are asphyxiatingly tight (For my spell list at lvl 3 i have Command, Shield of Faith and Thunderous Smite, but I am absolutely changing the kit on our first Long Rest)
So without Cantrips and with my Spell Slots dropping like flies each combat, is there anythin I can do or am I relegated to kinda just doing melee hit and ending turn?
That's by no means "bricking" your character. Paladins, especially at low level, do have a fairly simple action loop in combat by design.
Also, remember that you can cast one Divine Smite for free per long rest.
Level 2 is way too early to worry about a character having limited options. At least you have options - try barbarian for a "swing, done" turn!
Mhm. And cantrips at that level might have additional combat effects, but when it comes to pure damage, a normal swing (without smiting, mind you) will still be more effective.
i might just be jealous of the druid and warlock in the party getting to cast cantrips without worrying about spell slots when I am having a headache trying to save some slots for the next encounter haha
I just wanted some info on whether this would be an issue down the lines or the options with later levels will alow me to open up
I'd say in general paladins are melee combat focused and excel at doing that through various buffs and class/subclass abilities. They're a half-caster, where druids and warlocks (kinda) are full-casters.
meaning the latter two specialize on spells
Get a handful of javelins. Cast them.
Divine smite javelin, to boot
Wizard, druid, bard and one unknown
all spellcasters fun, not much you have to take into account for that just the players should be properly tracking their spell slots
Ty, should I tell them to not have more variety or?
a martial could be nice but any group of classes work
besides eventhough theres 3 spellcasters each of them do still have their niche. wizards have a very large spell list, druid can wildshape and has a lot of control spells and the bard will excell in social encounters
something to keep in mind as the dm is all of these do have generally lower AC and HP then a typical martial, now they got plenty of stuff in their arsenal to prevent opponents from getting to them/hitting them but it depends on how knowledgeable your players are in using them. If theyre kinda new like you (seem to be) they might have trouble holding off stronger enemies
Fortunately not, four ranged attackers is a great way to make your adventuring go way easier
In a turn, do you always have an action and a bonus action for something minor like equipping your shield for example?
or do you only have a bonus action when it is invoked by an ability such as Cunning Action or Divine Smite?
you always have a bonus action (unless something specifically mentions taking it from you) you dont have to use the bonus action though
quite a few classes have no or limited use bonus actions so you might want to save them for another fight
Bonus actions and their uses are specifically noted in their relevant features.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#BonusAction
A Bonus Action is a special action that you can take on the same turn that you take an action. You can’t take more than one Bonus Action on a turn, and you have a Bonus Action to take only if a rule explicitly says so.
So unless you have a feature that mentions that you can do something as a bonus action, don't worry about it.
So this is false? @hearty escarp
I do disagree with Luuks framing, yeah. But in practice, it amounts to much the same thing.
Donning or doffing a shield takes an action (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#ArmorTable).
You can aometimes do another thing in your turn. See: Interacting With Things, here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#YourTurn
yeh more so bad wording then wrong information from me
you do always have a bonus action available to you, but its the question whether you have something that can use it
I'll keep in mind and help them build ty
As much as we say "there's no tanking in D&D!" there kinda is. If someone's got a decent AC and a good stack of Hit Points, they can play a key role is keeping their ranged comrades free to shoot. Restrict enemy movement with a grapple, or threaten them with an opportunity attack. Even close-in bodyguarding can help block an enemy getting to their friends (many creatures favouring melee attacks).
Tanking exists it just isnt broadly supported like in other rpgs
Spellcasting and ranged attacks, or any creature bigger than large are very difficult to actually stop from just murdering your spellcasters
Dnd as a combat system is just built to be very individualistic, with cooperative elements
Yeah, you're not going to max aggro and get a boss locked on you while everyone else kills it, but there are things you can do to improve your odds with a bit of good team play and tactics.
For sure, but i do believe “party balance” isnt particularly important
Tbh I just want everyone to have fun, i can always change monster health in the moment can't I? And note it for next time
You can always cheat, but its a habit i recommend breaking
If its noticeable by the players it feels really really bad for them
It's also a more complex topic better suited for #dm-discussion , rather than here
Ty!
I played the Before The Storm adventure, and I don't think I was successful. I ended up resigning my position. Was there anything further about the book and the dream? I didn't accomplish anything.
Not played it myself, but #1029833015423143957 might have the inside scoop.
I believe Before The Storm is the interactive online Demo
Indeed, I've only glanced at it.
I'll look at adventures-spoilers.

How do you mean exactly? If you asking what each class does, you can find a list of them in the Basic Rules in the bot post right above yours.
I just started playing d&d and I dont know how it works

Hey y'all, im a new dm and though i have played dnd a few times before it was as a player. Im currently already reading thr 2024 dnd beyond basic rules, but i had a question of advice of how a dm should prepare for each session?
There's not really a "should." Every DM finds their own approach. I write any major location descriptions in advance and try to have ready places the players are likely to go, who they could find there and what info those folks have, any combat encounters, and any loot that could be found.
I'm sure #dm-discussion would give even more advice!
I see thank you. And yeah im not asking for a one sized fits all answer, more over a what works for you and seeing if i could make that work for me. Thank you, you did help with that

Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
well, its official. WotC has caved in to popular demand and is calling the revised edition 5.5e.
Ok really stupid question but I'm trying to make spell radius with cardboard and each time a measure 3inches for 15 feet one side is too long, if a 15 foot spell radius cone is made into a triangle will it be 3inches on every side
A 15 foot cone is 15 feet wide and 15 feet long from the origin, so the two sides are longer than the "back" of the cone
Ok Ty, I thought it would be a perfect triangle
Which honestly makes sense. 2024 dnd isn't an expansion, its a remake, and it's completely fair to call it 5.5
i just wanted them to call it something
So Hay guys so like im new and I actually want 2 make a character is anyone down 2 help with that in a vc by chance?
Or in dms?

Ok
Is it possible to make a mixed fighter x fire goblin mage
Fighter is a class & Goblin is a species so that part's possible.
There is no "fire goblin" subspecies so you may want to define what you want out of playing a Fire Goblin so you can adjust what character options you want to take.
There is also no "Mage" class. The closest thing would be Wizard.
To me it seems you want to play a Goblin that has melee utility and has the ability to cast some cool fire spells, of which there's a lot of options.
The cleanest options in my opinion would be to make a Goblin Fighter and take the Eldritch Knight subclass at level 3 or make a Goblin Wizard and take the Bladesinger subclass at level 3.
Yes that would work but I want most of my skills in melee and and a few in fight spell but j would also need a good defense spell and damage negotiation
Hi all, I am looking to learn how to play DnD and want to get to grips with how it works as both a player and DM as I have recently purchased the starter set as it is also something my son would be into. we have had a practice game but I feel I am missing things and getting things incorrect maybe. Although he did enjoy playing, I just want to make sure that I am more knowledgable with being a DM. That and I would also like to be a player at some point and as he is only 8 and really smart for his age, think Dm role would be a bit much for him. London/Essex based, anybody that can help would be great. I have created a character on Roll 20 and am ready if there are any online games games happening then would love to join in.

Sounds like a Goblin Eldritch Knight Fighter would be right up your alley then!
You can try stone Goliath for some damage reduction!
As a race?
Won't that get rid of the eldritch option
Correct. In 2024 they can reduce damage taken by 1d12 and they can use it the amount of times equal to proficiency bonus
You can still play eldritch knight fighter as a stone Goliath 🙂↕️
Oh nice
Hmm if the last thing I have 2 ask is what king of spells would I have access 2?
Or does it depend on the dm?
Feel free to DM me.
Your spell list will depend on what option you're using to get spellcasting. If you're a Wizard for example, you'd learn from the Wizard spell list.
Hello, not exactly a newcomer but it’s been an awful long time since I’ve played any DnD officially. Recently played some DnD adjacent video games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dark and Darker and have been getting back into it though. Hope everyone is doing well
Welcome. let us know if you have questions
Could I add a necromancer spell?
Again depends on your spellcasting feature and what class spell list it says it draws from.
Pretty much every class with a spellcasting feature gets at least one spell from the school of necromancy.
Also Necromancer isn't it's own class. Wizard does have the subclass "School of Necromancy" but it isn't restricted to Necromancy spells. They just get extra benefits to learning spells of that school as well as some extra necromancy themed features.
Thank you

@worn bluff you need to use the #find-a-game channel and not here to post what ya are lookin for
got ya
i have looked and seems like for experienced played. as mentioned i am completely new to the game
95% will take new folks. if something sounds good reach o ut and ask if they will and I bet they will say yes
I'm a DM at my school for our club and I'm wanting to learn more about d&d and more about how to properly run sessions, make decisions, and be better at improv obviously
Reading through the beginning chapters of the Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide gets you most of the way there
Can actually start with the free rules first: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
If you like the game well enough, feel free to invest in the Players Handbook
Thank you I'll do my most to improve
lv 1 half elf ranger looking to join some adventures semi noob
isn't it weird that dnd takes place on a physical grid? how are we meant to litigate that? do most people play with a game board or something?
THere are plenty of options for grid maps
It does make some distance based things very difficult to keep track of. I either use a VTT or a map grid (just a printed piece of paper)
You can play the game theater of the mind too
Though there's enough combat abilities that rely on positioning distance that it often helps to have some kind of indicator
Can i have some help with making a charactor soon
They aren't going to miss out on them fireballs
technically speaking (at least in 2014 rules) grid combat was an optional rule, but things were just structured in 5ft increments for convenience
The grid is still optional. People like it for convenience and the translation is fairly smooth, but you can just as well play without it.
hello i just joined the discord server
Howdy. What's on your mind?
I’m new and curious and I want to get into it, I played around with dnd beyond character creation and I had fun just building a character lol. But how do I play dnd?
Like rules or finding a game?
I guess both? I tried playing years ago but didn’t have a consistent group so never rly got back into it, found this discord and was curious to see if I could get back into it
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Or if you have friends or family willing to play, sitting around the table with the latest Starter Set would be the ultimate experience - it’s designed to get all brand new players into the game as both players and DMs
What class, species and background did you pick?
Ummmm so ok I know exactly nothing I just like the way DND sounds and I have a big imagination and idk how to out it to use
I'd say read the first couple of chapters in the free rules on #learn-to-play and if you any questions after that feel free to ask

Hi @stable gazelle , looks like you're trying to post in find-a-game.
You can only submit threads there through the bot service. Type

Pick the option you need and hit submit to get started.
So I finished poking around with the first few chapters of the free rules and I might have some questions so please bear with me
That's fine, ask away, it's why we're here.
Hello everyone I am new to the 5th edition version of the game
I bought the core books and the Van richten guide
heya
so let's say I was playing a halfling and if my halfling had enough strength could it still move a massive boulder even though it's physicality should make it impossible
Yup! There's nothing stopping a smaller character from being strong.
not really a mechanical difference between small and medium as far as encumberance and related mechancis are concerned
Basically, whether a task is possible is up to your DM. If the task is impossible, no amount of strength will help you here.
If a task is possible but difficult, your DM may require a roll. A higher Strength score would make that roll more likely.
A DM could also forgo a roll entirely if it was possible and also not a challenge, if they think the task could be accomplished normally.
Unfortunately, you can't really determine which of these will occur. That's all on your DM.
Hello, I wonder if this is the right place to ask but here is my question: D&D 2024 PHB, MM and DMG have been translated to French and have been shipped now (I got them already) but I can't seem to find info about the official DM Screen being translated. I can't seem to find the info anywhere. Is it going to be translated as well? Thanks!
Not a clue! Someone else here might have the answer, but maybe #merch-and-dice or #dm-discussion might also help if we can't?
Thank you for the reply! I asked in #dm-discussion but I don't think anyone noticed my message (high volume of exchanges there). I will try #merch-and-dice if I have no luck here. Thanks!
Unfortunately there are very few people who might be able to answer your question, since this is a primarily English server. Better to cast a wide net.
Fair point!
Ah that makes more sense so it could be possible with a higher DC or completely forgo alright
Then next question if I wanted a character to pick up a flaming log from a campfire and swing it as an attack would that count as an action or multiple, or would it fall under Utilize actions and lastly would it do bludgeoning and fire damage?
For anything not covered by the rules, as with your example, it's a matter of "Ask Your DM." If you ask three different DMs, you might get three different answers!
Oh thanks then
if anyone would be down to help me figure out my character sheet would be much appreciated. i just got back into dnd after a few years so some things are a but lost for me. cant post pics of my sheet here tho. would there be a place in the server that i could post my sheet in for advice?
Ive been here and there all over the internet looking for some good tutorials on how to make a path of the beast barbarian but with little to no luck
If you've got questions about the basics of filling out character sheets, we can help here.
If you need help with more specific parts of your sheet, build, or ideas, #character-discussion is the place to go.
While you can't post images on this server, you can upload your sheet to an image or file sharing website like imgur or Google drive and you can post the link to that instead.
ahh ok tysm. i got the basics down for the most part but just wanna make sure my numbers are alright looking.
probably a dumb question but it's my first time playing so i'll ask it anyways:
i'm playing a monk - warlock multiclass, and i know that at lvl 1 i can have two spells, but with my Undying pact magic i can also have 2 other spells. so my question is, those two spells from pact magic, do i add them to my 2 already chosen spells from the warlock spell list or are they just options i can choose from for the two spells of my warlock
how do I go about finding a group to play with that will teach me the game ive applied to play to so many on the lookin for a player screen to always get a game full reply
The Undying subclass just adds the spells to the list you could choose from. It doesn't add them automatically to the spells you have.
okay tysm
How and When do we learn spells ?
Pls
Trying to find a group without knowing the rules will make your search much, much, much more difficult. Taking the time to learn the rules before you play is much more likely to net you results.
Otherwise, you're asking your DM to run the entire game for you and teach you everything, which is putting all the responsibility of your experience on them. It's usually considered a bit rude.
Different classes learn spells in different ways and at different rates. You can check when your class learns spells in your class's description.
ive read the rules and have a vague understanding of them but so many games are homebrews so its like throwing them out of the window reading the description sometimes and I dont mean to be rude im just better at learning as I go and with zero expirence im not getting anywhere
Okay thanks 😊
Hello all
Many games that have homebrew settings or some homebrew rules end up changing less than 5% of the rules of the game in total.
Reading through all the rules might be annoying, but unfortunately DnD requires reading. Thankfully though, there's plenty of resources to help you learn, like videos and the folks here on the discord. As you're going through the Basic Rules, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have.
yeah... i tend to avoid homebrew games too. although i should really branch out, there's some great homebrew settings.
I mean some of them look really cool its just been hard to find a group to take on a newbie
the thing with newbies is that often other players and DMs want to play the game instead of slowing down to teach.
wheras the last 7 or 8 months i've run stuff exclusively for newbies at a local event.
its not so bad if everyone at the table is a newbie
I live in the middle of no where there arent any local events unfortunately
i'd play more in person but i do everything possible to NOT play at someone's home, and i am NOT having strangers in my home to play a game.
I dont blame you at all on that
that and its a gamble in my city of running into people who are actually sketchy vs just appear sketchy
so i can completely understand why you are looking for online games. i just... there's no physical minis. there's no physical dice. there's no physical battle maps.
i ran a digital game for almost a year and a half. it was fun, but unsatisfying for me.
exactly and im a visual learner so if im not doing it and seeing it im lost just like i am now with it I can read everything and still only really retain half of it
Maybe it'll help to watch other people play so you can see it in action. There's plenty of people who play every day on streaming websites like Twitch and YouTube. It's referred to as "live play DnD".
if you can track down the Essentials Kit rulebook, that might be a great read for you. half of it is just spell descriptions, which are on a need-to-know basis. the character creation rules you really only need once. so the rest is applicable on a more regular basis. its so much shorter than the player's handbook.
also, i found the actual physical paper character sheet was much better for visual learners, as there's so much of the useful information right there instead of buried in digital menus
Thank you ive read the rules provided on roll 20 and dnd beyond and I get the gist of it im just wanting to find a group that actually lets me apply it and figure it out
watching actual plays are a great way to learn visually, especially when they're closer to generic random tabletop experience instead of the overproduction of Critial Role or the bananas of Legends of Avantris.
Character creation, what the d20 is for, your options in combat and what your specific features can do. That's enough to kick off with.
yeah. that's a good grasp of things. often the newbies i'm running are closer to the "what is this weird dice?" level of knowledge.
that's why i often keep pointing people to the Essentials Kit. much smaller, much more contained, and much less intimidating.
if i had experience with the starter set rules from the heroes of the borderlands set, or the hellfire set (especially if they had character creation rules), and they had a freely available pdf from WotC, i'd likely point to them. right now its either the LMoP starter set rules pdf which lack character creation, or the Essentials Kit rules pdf which does have character creation. there hasn't really been any official smaller pdf books since those ones that do the same thing.
is the dungeons and dragons dot come webpage supposed to be laggy, like 2 frames per second animation?
Welcome to modern software design, where everything looks nice but nothing works.
like when a menu button is clicked, it takes a full 3 seconds to fade away and then another 5 seconds or so for whatever response to begin fading in. browser makes no difference.
that, and is there any way to get the stormwreck choose your own adventure thing anymore?
Are you referring to this? /gen https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
there we go. i should take the time to transcribe that stormwreck thing, since there's really no way to save it. once 5.5e rolled around i got the feeling it would go away at some point, being for 5e.
wow. there's a 2 second lag even just trying to scroll up and down. not much actually there yet on the site.
Started dnd 6 weeks ago and been dming once a week for a group of friends. What are some tips to make the campaign feel more immersive and fun?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Ask your players what they find fun and find ways to incorporate those elements. I know it maybe sounds obvious, but everyone's fun is different! Also, pay attention to what they engage with, and use that to inform how the game proceeds in the future.
- what was fun, a high point of this session?
- what could have been better?
- what are you looking forward to?
Hi guys, one of my players is having some difficulty with character creation and I haven't made a character in some time, this is the message from them:
Not sure how some of it works .. Specifically the starting equipment, I've opted for the standard Wizard equipment, but the gold amount for the Sage background, how does it work for adding additional starting equipment?
Gold from a background is separate thing from starting equipment
You'd get both, the starting equipment listed by the wizard class, and anything you get from your background
He was also asking if he has a longsword and subtracts the gold is that ok?
So, a wizard gets
- Choise between a quarterstaff or a dagger
- Choise between a component pouch or an arcane focus
- Choise between a scholar's pack or an explorer's pack
- A spellbook
While sage gets the following: A bottle of ink, a quill, a small knife, a letter from a dead colleague posing a question you have not yet been able to answer, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10gp
AHH ok so when he says he's went for standard wizard equipment what would that be
The ones I listed above
Longsword is 15 gp, sage gets 10 gp, so they couldn't technically afford it. Its up to you if you want to ignore the 5 gp difference, which isn't the biggest deal
Do you mean proficiency or just weapons?
Rogues are proficient with the following: Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords
And they get to start with
- Either rapier or a shortsword
- Shortbow with 20 arrows or a shortsword
You generally don't just get physical objects when you level up. What you start with is what you get, and after that you usually buy them with the gold you obtain on the way
Also to add to the previous, do note that wizards aren't proficient with longsword, so unless your friend gets the proficiency form elsewhere, the sword may not be the best option 😉
Ahhh yes I was reading the proficiency and thought it was their inventory lmao
Yes I was just speaking to him, he chose the sage BG but when it asked him if he wanted the supplies or the gold he chose the gold (which I think is a new addition as I don't remember it)
Yeah if you're using the new edition, I can't help much with that
No I got it sorted now tysm. I was wondering what proficiency means tho. I know it's the thing that they are used to but does that mean they get disadvantage if they use something they're not proficient in?
Proficiency means you know how to use something
For weapons, if you are not proficient, you do not add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll, but otherwise roll as normal (unless it's different in the new edition)
it is still the case in 2024 / 5.5
if you are proficient in anything, including the weapon, you add your proficiency modifier, if you are not you do not.
Tysm!
I said that if he gives me a reason in his backstory to be proficient I'll add it in for him, is that okay?
yer the DM so of course it is. As a seasoned DM I wouldnt. there is a reason they didn't give it to wizards. Even if he is planning on going to Bladesinger at lvl 3 which may add the proficiency at that time, I would hold off until then. Maybe let him have the sword now so its like he practices with it thru level 1 and 2 so at 3 it makes sense why he can, but until then, no +2 from proficiency bonus. but thats me
So I've just took a look and he chose high elf which should give him proficiency with weapon training i.e. longswords but it hasn't worked for some reason
2014 version or 2024 version?
Elves only get weapon training in 2014
Hello
He will be starting at 3 so I'll say to him
24 DND beyond
Ahhh, do races not get proficiencies anymore??
hi molotov. let us know if u have questions
Thnx
For the most part no. Some races still get skill proficiencies, but they moved away from weapons/armor
Ah ok Ty, so is the only way to get proficiencies via class and multiclassing?
Classes, subclasses, feats
I had a question is there a character rating channel (miniature and character building) where I could get feedback
Awesome tysm!
Btw you dont need to ping me each and every time
check out the id:browse for all of the options as I am not sure what they all are myself lol
Thnx
Oh sorry! I didn't notice it was on
Also especially since I don't use 5.5, so not much I can say about it if that's what you're using 😅
it pings because you reply. aspect of Discord you can't avoid
All sorted now, ooc are you still able to use DND beyond as a 5e user?
I don't use Beyond
You can turn it off the reply pings, just takes an extra step
On mobile it gives you an option to turn the ping off
Ty for saying cause I was worried it didn't work for a sec xD
Ah ok, fair enough :3 Ty for your help
How to disable pinging when replying
Oh cool I learned something new LOL

hi are there any alternatives for the d20 app on discord?
You'll have to explain what that is!
the discord activity that lets you host dnd campaigns
i was wondering if there was anything else like that
Sorry, but that doesn't clear it up any, and Googling d20 discord isn't leading me anywhere productive!
sorry omg i meant roll20
I don't know of any other virtual tabletop that works with Discord that way, but there are a ton of freestanding VTTs out there.
I like Owlbear Rodeo's no-frills approach, and it's free.
okayy ill check that out thank you sm
Explicitly on discord, no, however theres lots of alternatives outside of discord
@slow mirage
Hi. I'm new here. I've never played but would love to learn. My DMs are open to helpful tips and tricks
Here's the recomended reading for just starting out c:
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Hey. I’m new to dnd and was wondering if someone could help me create my first cleric character. I’ve tried using dndbeyond and roll 20 but they’ve both confused me more than they’ve helped me.

Hey hey! I'm new to D&D, i've played once before and have a character and im currently working on her sheet. But I cant seem to find any of her spells or cantrips on D&D beyond to write down on the sheet.. (Weapons & Damage Cantrips) She'd a lv 2 Druid, and i know she would have some spells, especially cantrips. But i dont know how to navigate D&D beyond that well
Hi. I'm trying to buy DND stuff. What would I need to buy to begin
Go to her interactable character sheet, then go to Spells and Manage Spells
Dice, dice, the Players Handbook, and dice
Hey, I'm pretty new to DND and using the classic sheet for the Crooked Moon campaign. I've only ever been in one session and used DND beyond, so it would really help if someone helped me use the classic sheet
Please @ or reply to me when someone sees this
What’s up dudes
Thank you! It seems that I had her spells but didnt have them prepared lol
I just could have sworn when i created her, I had some spells already done that were really good. But i cant remember what they were! 😭
Any games going on rn

Hey, i’m trying to get back into dnd but struggling to find any Aus groups/servers, sorry to bother but could i get a little help please?
You could look through the various game postings in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community to see if any of them look like a good fit. I wouldn't worry about time zones per se but rather "can I play 3-4 hours at that time?" Some D&D games have folks from all over the world.
Is it normal to assume that a oneshot online will happen all in one day or are oneshots broken down to sessions a common enough occurrence?
One shots are intended to be finished within one session, hence the name.
Sometimes it could happen that you run out of time and a second session may be scheduled to finish the adventure, but that's not too common in my experience.
I want to start my first campaign but I don't know how many people I need we already have a DM and three players I don't know if we need more
You don't need anymore.
I would also say that if the DM is a first time DM then 3 players is more than enough
The min most will say is dm and two players. I prefer three players and technically no max but most would say four or five players
I like 3-5. Just be aware 4 is the sweet spot for balancing in published adventures
once you get up beyond 6 players the combat really lags unless everyone is very experienced.
So erm, can your D&D character be overpowered?
It can with the right build and/or magic items
Cause like my Bard/Rouge characters has proceincey on almost all his skills, and they are rlly high ☠️
Ahh yeah you can get some insane skills as a bard/rogue multiclass 🙂↕️
Yeah he has 12 skills that he has +3 or more on 🗿
Rogues and Bards are the skill characters, so that's part of their niche
(Ong this was an accident)
Ah I see
12 does sound high for accidental proficiencies, but it's certainly possible. Especially if you just have good stats in general.
I've got a Bard/Rogue multiclass who's proficient in everything
His stat spread is:
10/16/11/14/8/15
Lv4 btw
What's your class split?
Bard is primary (Lv2), Rouge is secondary (Lv2)
I made it so that most his spells are illusion and mind screw based
My Druidlock has 11 at 3+ c:
it's rather nice to have a decent shot at most things when rolling
Granted he has only 23 HP
So, you'd be proficient with 3 skills as a bard, plus 2 from your background. Then get another skill from the Rogue multi. So that's at least 6 to start. And you'll have at least a +3 in any Dex skill just from your stats
He also has the criminal background 🗿
Yeah, so that's the 2 skills from your background
So, this makes sense now
Oh well, if he does seem to OP, I’ll just make his goal to ragebait
What time zones do u guys normally play because I am in Asia >_>
Folk play all sorts of times. Look up a world clock, see what times you can make.
I regularly say that that time zone matters less than the actual time. If I'm in a different time zone than you, but the time works, then it works. You don't need to match time zones exactly for a game
Hii everyone, I am new to dnd, can anyone actually teach me how to play? I tried read the thing in #learn-to-play channel but I really dont get anything ;-;
Hello! I have a question - could a sorcerer potentially use magic to give someone a 20 foot long tongue? In 2014 5E :)
Not generally. Spells and abilities do what they say they do, and unless you found something that fits, a sorcerer could not make that happen.
Aw man! My little brother always tries to say he has one, so I hoped I could give him one somehow
Maybe look into the learn-to-play sessions offered through the virtual weekends? You can find info in the server's Events tab.
Curious to try online play to learn dnd. I've never been a player and have only experimented with dm'ing and solo ttrpg stuff but nothing with official dnd really and not very much success. Basically what I'm trying to say is im a super fresh newbie. I'm wondering if theres any dm's who are doing one shots to teach new players and if I could possibly join in on one.
Reply to the ads that interest you in #looking-for-players!
Yeah I've been looking through there but nothing has really caught my eye. I dont want to be a burden so im hoping to find a dm who wants to have newbie players. I maybe should mention im wanting to play normal 5e and my time zone is PST. The sooner the better too, while I've got the courage for it lol. But if the fit is right and the date and time is right then I would wait.
you can always post what you are looking for as a player. also many DMs do not explicitly say they will take newbies, but I'd bet 85-90% will do so if you ask. So if something meets your criteria except it doesn't say newbie friendly, just ask! i also know that new folks hesitate to pay to play, but i find that you may have a MUCH higher chance of getting something if you are.
Are you looking for more of a set game or a community game like a westmarch or living world?...because if you are open to community that would open some more options for you as well ^.^
I’m interested to know if dnd has preset worlds like that go along with game versions such as e5, maybe that players could use as a template or something?
Im not sure what any of that means 😅
Well there's already established locations in dnd, the most popular ones are probably Neverwinter, baldurs gate, waterdeep, underdark and Avernus
That’s epic
The underdark is epic but scary 👀
So traditional games like those in #looking-for-players have the same 1 dm same plotline same characters per game generally...but in #looking-for-community it might be multiple dms making one shots and plotline in a shared world ^.^
There are tons of pre generated campaigns, one shots, etc all set in various true D&D lore areas that make it easy for DM's and players to not have to dig deep and make that stuff up on their own. There are also NOVELS upon NOVELS all set in these same areas
That’s epic! Maybe I should look into that because we really have no idea what we’re doing lol, maybe something simple to start would be better
I wonder though, do dms like doing pre generated campaigns?
I wouldn’t wanna find a dm and have them bored from doing a simple thing
Premade adventures are just a way of saving the effort of preparing everything. Creatures and situations and locations, written up and ready to go.
It's not like you're handing the players a script!
I would guess the DMs are divided pretty evenly if not more of them preferring to do pre-generated. Where many prefer to homebrew the world. Probably not official statistic on this out there
Hi :D!!!
A fellow rogue player, heya
howdy. let us know if you have questions
That sounds interesting and maybe more newbie friendly on the dm's side.
You sure are energetic lol
I tryyyy lmao
I noticed lol
Also, half the time you’re rewriting swathes of the material anyway, lmao.
I like community servers because it feels more flexible. I have one I run and im in two others as well ^.^
I swear d&d beyond is the most confusing website 😭
Hello! Im new to DnD and a DM in training, what's the best way to learn all the rules? Also has anyone ever tried playing DnD irl? I nake escape rooms and I've always wanted to try and frame an escape room like a DnD game but I've never done it before, any ideas?
Hi
The closest thing I can think of for that is True Dungeon. It's not d&d but it is a more interactive roleplay than most d&d games
Real life d&d games are usually still just people sitting around a table rolling dice
Hey me and my friend of mine recently developed and interest for DnD and we were wondering if there was anyone who could help us learn the ropes

Hello fellow nerds, I'm new to playing DND but I have been watching / listening to Critical role and Dungeons and Daddies for a few months now. I'm hoping to use this discord for help and advice as me and my wife are the only players (playing 2 characters each plus me doing the DM stuff not ideal but it's what we got), we bought all the 5E books we could and we're currently reading up while making characters. Please feel free to give me ideas to lessen my burden without adding more players as due to my wife's anxiety it is not an option.👍
The Lazy DM books/materials from Sly Flourish can be helpful for teaching you tips/tricks on how to make your DM prep time more efficient and streamlined.
But the biggest tip is "focus on having fun".
hi
We play games like D&D to have fun so as a DM (and player) try to make sure everyone playing (including the DM) are having fun.
Sounds grand, if both of you want to play at the same time, there are gmless options - means both of you narrate and play, its truly fantastic :) There are also very beginner friendly adventures and modules, first and third Party, if you havent found one yet I can recommend a few?
ty for the replies,@hoary chasm please recommend away. We have multiple adventure books from 5e including some one shots for beginners but the more info and options the better
Phandelver is a recommended start for a reason, but so are Grammy Countries Apple Pie and Wild Sheep Chase. For emulators, you will find a bunch of free ones including things for dnd which are mostly Prompt - Generators. You meet someone on the road and they are rolls dice dangerous and rich, who are they? It unfolds pretty nicely when you played it two or three times and gets both parties talking :) Besides that you will find a few dozen ttrpgs made for two people, and I think even whole dnd modules
ty i will look into those
Hi guys!! I just joined. How goes fellow adventurers and story weavers?
Hello and welcome!
Could someone help me figure out how skill proficiency works? I get that it starts a +2 but how do I get it higher? It just goes up as I level up from what I was told but I can't find a table showing by how much per level or anything
It's shown in the level progression chart for every class. For example, here's the one for barbarian: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#BarbarianFeatures
And proficiency increases at the same rate between all classes.
Ok ty
Do I need to work out my spell save dc if I don't use spells? Pretty sure my AC is what I use to see if it hits me right?
Yep, the spell save doesn't apply to someone without spells. And yes, AC is what an attack roll needs to meet or exceed to hit you.
Ty
Greetings, adventurers! I'm a long-time D&D fan from Italy, and I've finally made my way here in search of new quests
Howdy!
Hello! I'm going to be a first time DM soon and will be creating an original campaign by myself for my players soon!
What should I keep in mind during the making of the campaign or the sessions that we are going to play?
And what can I do to make the campaign engaging for the players?
#dm-discussion can probably give you more in-depth suggestions for building a campaign. My biggest tip is to 1) ask players what they find fun and lean into that (without sacrificing your own fun, of course) and 2) pay attention to when they seem most engaged and try to replicate that.
Hey i am kinda new to dnd and i dont know where to start on makeing a charcter sheet
Any tips?
Read over #learn-to-play. The first two sections of the Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) tell you everything you need to know about how to make a character.
Anyone got any tips on how to actually get started after finding other people who are also interested in playing?
If at least one of you is willing to DM, I’d pick up the most recent Starter Set Heroes of the Borderlands. It’s designed to teach a group of all brand new players and DM.
Thanks!
me and four friends are starting a campaign for the first time, do you have any tips for me as a player for a good first session and what beginner classes would be easy and fun to use?
The martial classes (fighter, rogue, barbarian) have the fewest mechanics, but really you should pick whatever class you're excited to learn.
My big tips are listen attentively, share the spotlight, and communicate both when things are great and when they feel off. And familiarize yourself with the info on your character sheet!
Yo
Evening. Let us know if ya have any questions
me and my friends are all beginners to dnd and want to start playing. what’s the easiest way for all of us to learn?
Poking around #learn-to-play and readIng the free basic rules
lmao I’m such a noob, I almost dm’ed you
Hi im a noobie ive played a few table top sessions and an online DM'd by my friend. Are there any online games I can join?
Also if your character is playing in one games can I use rhe same character or do I need to create a new one?
I’m tryna get into dnd
I'm about to do my first campaign and I need help with doing my character sheet.. I'm so embarrassed cause I don't know where to start
First of all, what class inspires you more to try out?
My sister said you can do it online and it helps you with the math and everything
Also this sounds stupid but are harpies a playable character in the game?
Not sure if they are, i honestly doubt It but It depends if the DM would make you try it
not typically, but people more creative than i have turned monsters playable, though they are usually more experienced with the mechanics and whatnot
Oh that’s fair
So anyway, what would you like to try out? Or simply sounds more fun to you? Martial classes, spellcaster classes, or half caster classes?
Idk would be cool to meet a group that would help me learn a bit better!
There Is #learn-to-play and then #find-a-game that can help
Ty
You are welcome
Dont know about harpies but aarakocra comes pretty close
Omg ur right!
Generally you'll make a character for a campaign. You can re-use the concept, but it'd be a fresh start each time.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Thank you thats awesome
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
can someone make a story for me
Not sure what you mean, D&D is a collaborative storytelling game that involves players directly. If you’d like to find a group to play with using this server the instructions can be found in #find-a-game
There are also discussion channels here if you'd like to talk about a character's backstory, or seek advice for plotting a campaign for your group.
Hii everybody, I'm really interested in D&D but I've never played and I only very lightly know of the rules. Can I be guided at least as to what video to watch to understand more, and how I can get a hang of the game ? ^^ also is it possible to play a game alone like idk your own journey or does it have to be with a group?

There are some nice videos by YouTubers like Ginny Di, but keep in mind that they’re supplementary to the free Basic Rules and generally not a replacement for reading them. Speaking of the BR, they’re found in this channels pins as well as in #learn-to-play !
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice. Video guides are linked above.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Is it okay to ask for a specific like beginner video to watch as I do better understanding when explained verbally than reading? Sorry to trouble 🙇♀️
As for solo play, no, the game isn’t built for that kind of thing. Some fans have made various conversion kits to allow 5e to be played solo but I couldn’t recommend any specific one. The game typically assumes you’d play in a group, with 1 DM and 3-5 players (including yourself).
Depending on your specific needs, there are specific styles of games that may cater to them
Ah, thank you for explaining. Finding at least 3 other people to play with you sounds difficult.. but I'll read the learn to play channel and see if it's easier to grasp first ^^
It’s often said that the most difficult part about D&D is finding a group to play with, which is partially true.
It gets significantly easier the longer you look and the more avenues you use to look. This server has its own group finder using the instructions in #find-a-game , but here’s some other suggestions to look for a game:
- Other D&D / TTRPG discord servers
- Other D&D / TTRPG online communities (forums, facebook groups, etc)
- Local businesses (game stores, libraries, etc)
- Inviting your friends to play with you
Hello, I think there was a place somewhere in this server that explained common d&d terms and abbreviations. Where is that? I'm looking for what play by post mean
It’s in #learn-to-play
Hii guys!! I’ve just played my introduction one-shot at a local board game store today and i really enjoyed it, especially the role playing part. I want to join a campaign but since I’m still new and my time zone is gmt+7, I don’t know how which one i can join. (I do ask A LOT of questions)
what was the introductory one-shot?
hey sorry for the probably dumb question but when i take a warlock with an undying patron, i am allowed to get the spare the dying cantrip. is it just a cantrip i can choose from for my 2 level one warlock cantrip or do i add it to the already existing 2 cantrips ?
How much do magic items cost?
There’s a table in the DMG to advise DM’s based on rarity. Ultimately it’s up to them
It’s in addition to. The Among the Dead feature which grants Spare the Dying is a separate feature from Pact Magic which grants the 2 cantrips, so you get both
Alright tysm
I’m having some issues creating a character in general
What sort of issues?
Just making the character’s story.
backstory doesn't need to be all that long, even something generic is generally fine; just have it be between like 200ish and 700ish words. then you should be set.
try to work in at least an NPC or two. or maybe an organization that your DM can work with as a plot hook?
Well, my DM has a system he uses for that type of thing.
like:
- this is where my character comes from
- this is the type of upbringing they had
- this is why they're out here adventuring
- here's an NPC or two, or an organization my character has history with, That you can use as part of the plot to help tie in my character's story to the game.
in that case, you'll want to use those guidelines, and if you're having trouble with it, it might be a good idea to reach out to your DM to see if they have any ideas and perhaps could help with tying your character more thoroughly into the setting/plot
The more the themes of your character tie into the themes of the plot, the more fun you're generally going to have
It gives you a lot more impetus, where what once might have been just like a generic event/npc happening moving the plot forward can now be part of your character's backstory that's been brought forward to become part of the main plot-line c:
I don’t know what class to choose.
DO you want to play something more martial (physical/melee), magical, or more skills based where you shine most outside of combat but can do combat stuff as well?
do you prefer more supportive or active roles?
It feels like I have mind fog
and of the three, do you prefer the Social (intrigue, interacting with NPCs), Exploration (Dungeon crawling, environmental/actual puzzles, wayfinding, travel, problem solving), or Combat (action, tactics, big numbers, etc.) pillars of play more?
do you know anything about your character so far? could go from there. might also consider moving to #character-discussion as people interested in helping with things like this (including me) hang out there where this is a more general help channel
I would say no, I do not.
what types of characters do you like to play in other games?
What type?
like the sorts of abilities they have, do you like more agile characters with lots of movement? heavier, more punchy sorts? mages?
do you like getting up close or picking off enemies from far away
like if you're playing a FPS, what sort of weapon are you using
hi
Hello
Hi everyone, I had wanted to try and put myself more out there into the community feeling like D&D would be a great way of doing so yet having struggles trying to find a proper group, is it possible that some will allow others to spectate sessions to help grant a better understanding of if that group is one you can truly get along with? I don’t really have any expectations at the moment. personally had a better time seeing things firsthand before jumping in.
you can find gameplay videos online or like VoDs on twitch
a lot of Adventure League tables stream as they're incentivised to do so, and they play as close to a rules as written interpretation of the game as possible
Where would you find the streams? Can’t say I’ve ever heard of them before.
youtube, twitch, anywhere you can find videos on the internet
Tons and tons of actual play footage on YouTube alone
Also posing another lingering thought, I’ve had ideas for a Dragonborn sorcerer for a first character yet a few other struggles I’ve considered lead from trying to find a fitting name for it and trying to figure out how to properly rp said character. I heard someone state that the characters are an extension of yourself yet I feel like every race would have their own personality.
Depending on the type and race alike
Your species certainly doesn't have to dictate your personality. You also don't have to RP as a character similar to your real life self (though it's definitely easier to do so).
I recommend watching some critical role, they're popular, Matthew Mercer is an amazing DM and the players are very good at RP and making characters, honestly I've learned a lot from watching them and had a great time watching. I also recommend buying 3 books; Monster manual (Helps u with monsters), Players handbook and Dungeons Masters Guide. I hope I understood your question cuz english isn't my first language
My favorite thing about D&D is you don’t have to be yourself AND OR you can be yourself within your character
For me I love how you can express your creativity with friends
In many cases, when trying out a character you think is very different from you, you end up learning new things about yourself in the process.
That’s always felt like one of the things that really brought me into D&D initially. Actually spectating a group at a local library given the chance.
That's very cool
I just didn’t want my first time to end up becoming a crit crab or den of the Drake horror story so I wanted to at least know the group before joining in aiming to avoid that.
As long as you don't say "I know DND from Stranger Things" 🥲 /jk
I understand
Send him to Legends of Avantris.
Adventure League can be a really nice introduction to the game if you don't mind a slightly more restricted rules enviornment
it's a standardized method of play that is as close to RAW as possible, and there's guidelines for DMing it so it tends to be a little more approachable in that aspect
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

So it’s more so like a beginner friendly take for those wanting to get into it trying to bring others into the game in a safer environment. If I may ask, just how limiting can it get?
more or less, if the rule book says you can do it, you can do it
like no homebrew or table rulings, but I feel it ends up less restricted vs many homebrew/casual tables because if it's legal in your campaign, you're allowed to run it
here's the most recent ALPG which includes character creation rules & info https://wizardsprod.a.bigcontent.io/v1/static/DD Adventurers League Players Guide v20262 you'll want to play the Forgotten Realms campaign as that's the general one
you'd likely want to start at level 1 instead of 5
Guessing 5 is when it starts getting more complicated for those starting out?
3 is really where it starts getting a bit more complicated in 5.5e, seeing as that's when you pick subclasses
i generally recomend level 2 for new players as 1 can be a bit easy to die on, but in AL it's 1 or 5 outside of special circumstances and it's a bit more structures so you're less likely to have issues
I think all players, especially brand new ones, should spend some time at level 1. It’s a short lived level anyways but keeps things literally as simple as possible
Maybe someday I’ll change my tune, but that’s where I’m at
2 is a bit nicer for not getting one shot to instantly dead if you get crit on certain classes thoughl and even the more technical classes only have a moderately increased number of choices at second level
I agree, I think 1-3 is a good level range for new players because it's not gonna be super complicated, while still getting the feeling of getting stronger and having fun but not being overwhelmed with class features and more difficult enemies
3 can get a bit much due to subclasses, but presumably you have both the DM and the other players at the table to help you with that at that point
also spell selections beyond first level
It can be yes 😅 but most classes have a subclass that I'd say is beginner friendly. Like champion fighter, thief rogue, etc etc
I was initially aiming for a dragon sorcerer but now I’m curious about your thoughts with that?
Nice and straightforward.
dragonborn sorcerer is my go-to character 🤙 BUT spell casters can be pretty complicated for new players of dnd
I wouldn't say complicated as such. Do read your spells carefully beforehand, make notes if you need about what does what.
just remember to read your spells; there's recomended one in the class description if you have trouble deciding, and those tend to be at least decent picks
There’s a table in the create a character section of both the PHB and free basic rules that give a quick overview of all the classes, including complexity
I'm not sure I 100% agree with that table tbh, but it is a decent starting point
I think there's a tag for it here, but I can never remember that command
I suppose things could have changed since it was initially made but I’d have to look into it.
Yeah, not a perfect solution by any means
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
That’s the one!
-# The Monk more complex than Wizard...
-# le shrug
New monks are complicated, but I would definitely move Wizard up personally
sorcerer could conceivably be moved to average as you don't actually really need to mess with Meta Magic to make the class work
Wizard should be low complexity
they have very simple, and very few class features early on, and a fairly straight foward recomended spell list
I like suggesting Wizard to new players who want to be mages for sure
by the time you need to be picking new ones, you're going to have a DM and party members there to help out
I suppose they're not that complicated if you ignore adding extra spells to the spellbook. But if you're doing that, why are you being a wizard 😅
I'm assuming bards are higher just cause of the theft and druids have wildshape, but I've never found paladins that complicated
If spells confuse you, just only smite everything
But man… really any class is playable by a beginner. Anyone can learn anything
warlock deserves it's own special slot above high complexity
it's perhaps the one class I'd at least caution a new player on
between invocations and their unorthodox playstyle/magic system
still doable but there's extra rules baggage you need to work through that helps to have conext and experience with
5e druid is another just due to the sheer number of available statblocks for wildshape; 5.5e is a bit better because you ready those beforehand
First time I actually tried it, I was playing as this premade blue Dragonborn paladin character unfortunately the dice were not on my side, only thing I was able to do was use land a dagger on an invisible boss initially aiming for it to be an indicator to the rest of the team yet only then that was only like a single point of damage. Interestingly enough, that ended up becoming the killing blow before the campaign ended.
The only important hit point is the last hit point, as they say
and even then; healing word is a spell XD
there are so caveats to this, but its overall decent advice. (5.5e cure wounds is buffed enough to be worth it in combat). Dropping unconcious often ends a bunch of abilities you have running
especially if you can cast it via familiar

Hi everyone! i played a bit of a familiar kind of roleplay game before so im intrested how does the real deal works aswell!
here's the recommended advice if you'd like to learn the game c:

you don't need to memorize the playing the game portion or anything, you just generally want to know like vaguely how things works and where to look up information
from the previous game i played i learned you should but you back on the class and the race skills mostly since those can be helpful as i learned it before
so give it a casual read-through, and I would recommend making a test character (Roll 20 is better by the way), and then just have someone look it over in character discussion and make sure that you understood the rules right
but yeah, the things you need to be most aware of is how your character works specifically.

Guys, if campaign is going through foundry VTT so there's no way to play it without buying it? Or demo is enough?
only the DM has to run foundry; you will connect via your browser
they'll give you a link
I tried to buy player’s handbook 5e on the marketplace, but the payment processing always back failing. my card information is correct, is there something wrong?
The folks over in #ddb-support might be able to help.
ok thank you
Really dumb question but does it say in the phb how to work out perception, ac, spell modifier, spell save DC, passive perception etc because I had to rely on Google when trying to make a paper character sheet
It should yes
Spell save DC is under the Spellcasting section of the PHB, spell modifier is under the Spellcasting class feature of a class, perception would be the same place as all the other skills…
I don’t have my PHB on hand to give page numbers tho
Passive perception is for DMs to use to see if something would be detected by a character/creature without needing an active D20 test roll - it's calculated as 10 + perception modifier.
Tysm!
Ty!
hi is there chat in here for beyond20 issue i can go to ?
Reread and realized u said beyond20 lol
Oh shoot Beyond20? We don't support that - contact the browser extension developer for any support (the extension should have information on how to contact them for support).
Both Roll20 and D&DBeyond do not provide support for it - because it is created by a third-party
no i just wanted news on it because mine is not working very well not rolling anything and giving only instant numbers . so i wanted to see if it was only me before i start annoying them with something they already knows about
It is a MAJOR problem since the HUGE update of D&D Beyond's rolling system. I have asked my players to turn it off for now. I still have never found the advantage of it, it has only ever been a problem for me but to each is own
There's been recent updates to D&DBeyond so I'd expect some issues until the dev of the Beyond20 extension makes updates, things with Beyond20 will likely be broken/weird.
thanks a bunch you have been a great help
Hello
I have no clue what I'm doing, I've done ONE short campaign with my friends and it was really fun! I want to do more but I have no clue where to start! I'm a UK player, extremely new, and I'd love general help and or a campaign I could join with some guidance!

Relative newcomer. Is there an issue with creating characters in beyond for fun
not at all. great practice
Thank you! I'm also using it as a way to learn and get familiar
I will. I'm creating a life cleric and trying to think what would be a good race. I wanted to go drow but I.think I'll use a different class. Maybe halfling?
Either works
I might use this character in a campaign (I might use any)
Any race works with any class to be honest. I hope u get that chance friend
hello
So like I've always wanted to play a d&d game, nun crazy at first yk? And was wondering if there were any groups or individuals willing to help me learn the basic and ect? Bc ik nun about the game

I am a first-time player playing a campaign for now, in a Crooked Moon campaign. I plan on playing a rogue plagueborne who is a sort of "Robin Hood" who steals and kills only for himself and those who need charity. Any tips or ticks for roleplay, story creation, stats, or playing a Rogue in general will be very appreciated!
Also please @ me or reply because otherwise I won't see
hey guys im pretty new here and i kinda suck at drawing and dnd in general! I ive just made my character sheet and was won if theres anyone out there who can help me draw out my character?
Relatively new player coming from a bad pathfinder 2e campaign and wanting to find a new group that is accepting
hi
uh hello trynna find a dm for me and my friends for a JJK compaign idk if i should writte somthng different cuz its jjk/its not just me but more people
Check out instructions in #find-a-game and you can make a post in #looking-for-dm
Or browse through games in #looking-for-players , you occasionally see JJK themed games so you might be able to find something
If you're making your request in #looking-for-dm, make sure to include:
- the agreed availability for your group
- the way you want to play (e.g. video call, Foundry, PBP)
- the type of stories you'd like to have in your game
I had my first session! The only problem was that the order that we would take action was sloppy and felt weird.
Do most people go around the table or do you guys have a better way to do it?
Usually the order to take actions Is dictated by throwing initiative, so it's not always the same each time
During combat (and other time sensitive situations) you'd roll initiative and take turns in order
Outside of that though, yeah it can sometimes get confusing which order things should be done, though generally it's on the DM to help guide those situations and decide what's focused on first if multiple people are trying something at the same time
I find your name amusing.
I'm hoping someone calls my next character... oni-chan. (She's an oni.) 😛
Who knows, might happen some day
Your character needs a reason to want to help the party your in
This can be a random thing you work out with the party members at the start of the campaign but u still need to do what the party is doing
It's a really cool character concept but it could be annoying to play with if u don't really help ur group
Hey there, I'm a French girl trying to understand how im I supposed to play D&D for the first time and it's quite hard to figure it out
I have two questions :
- Did you have french player or will I need to only speak english even in campaign
- Did I need to understand everything before starting playing somewhere ?
I haven't a bad english, but im not fluent sooo i prefer ask
It depends if you find a group with only french people in it and tbh you don't have to know EVERYTHING to start playing, as long as you know the basic rules and stuff, the rest shouldn't be a problem for the DM to explain little by little
Okkay thanx !
You are welcome
Hello everybody! I am fairly new to D&D but am really excited to take part in adventures with you guys! My name is Alfred and I just started my first IRL homebrew campaign with a work friend, my wife, his wife, and his wives brother. I just wanted to introduce myself and say that so far the only character I've made is a Half-Elf Rogue. I would try to join a game now but my family is taking a tiny vacation in a couple weeks so maybe try to join when we get back home.
Also, check the #find-a-game channel, It should help guide you to find a group, such as #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-community and other channels
Welcome. Glad to have ya. Let us know if you have any questions
As far as I looked, all the game proposal are in english
Im not sure to be ready to a full campaign only in english haha
But thanxx for answering my question !
Usually they are all in english but you could always make a proposal of your own stating that you are looking for French players and DM
You can also post what you are looking for including that you want the game in french
Yeah just make sure the post is in English (server rules) but you can indicate that you prefer to play in Franch

Hello! Just getting back into DND after last playing in 2019! So far, playing in 1 campaign and have created two characters, one of which is taking my Grandpa, who passed away, and making him into a DND character based on everything I learned, heard, saw, read, and experienced with him. [This was a far bigger task than I thought, but it is still amazing to have done.] Hope to see more of you!
is there a spell that helps to find someone?
That’s very sweet, love the idea
Scrying
And Locate Creature
what level are these spells?
5 and 4
locate object also works in a pinch (level 2) if they're wearing or have with them something distinctive
whats the range?
- Locate Object has a 1000 ft range, if the object is moving you can tell that it is and in which direction
- Locate Creature is the same
- Scrying just requires they be on the same plane of existence; so global
Hunters Mark also works if you can tag them with it first, assuming something like a chase scene
Hello
thanks im playing a cleric that is trying to find his husband
its a long story
Scrying would be a very good option then
cleric gets it and due to you being increibly familiar with the targtet, they will have very little chance of saving if they resist the spell
it also helps greatly if you have something of theirs; or if not, and if your character can draw them from memory, that'd get you an additional -2 to the save
thank you for the help
nice aight bet
wait how many 5th level spells can a cleric have?
I appreciate you saying so! I just finished a "Hero Forge" model of him, or as close to him as I could.
So do people play on/through discord
?tag new online
Many do indeed
Some folks do play using Discord for communication and Discord bots to support dice rolls/character sheet tracking
I play on Discord and in real life
Avrae is a Discord bot owned and operated by D&DBeyond and it can pull in your D&DBeyond character sheet. You can learn more about it by reading the pinned messages in #ddb-avrae-help.
Hello people
Wish I could find folks irl, but I have been mostly on Discord

Btw any tips for first time DM'ing? I bought "Heroes of the borderlands (Newest edition)" and I tried to DM but got overwhelmed, players ask questions and try to do a things that don't have any written answers in the booklets
Improvisation is a skill that takes practice
you can switch them out on a long rest; though you can only cast so many a day
I’m pretty good at it after two years DMing, but there’s always room for improvement
ya thats fair im playing 2014 forge cleric
"no" and "let me think about it" are but valid answers. Other than that, it helps to know the types of things that skills are good for so you can translate player requests into a mechanical check when necessary
And similarly, if you think about the setting as a complete world, that can help you extrapolate what people may be doing beyond what's in the book
Would love to learn and start playing if anyone would wanna dm me and tell me what I need to do to get started

hi
Welcome to the server!
Hello all
Howdy let us know if u have questions
So question. How do I know if I'm minimaxing
Does it feel like you're becoming the main character or your character optimizes to such an extent that you overshadow other player's characters in the game? That may be a sign of min-maxing to a point of negatively imapcting the game.
That's a great question that I can't recall anyone asking before! I would also say if you're just following build advice online rather than picking options that YOU want, odds are good you're falling into the minmax mindset.
Personally, I don't think minmaxing is all THAT terrible, as long as you're not causing friction among players. There's nothing wrong (imo) with wanting to put effort into crafting a mechanically powerful build, but just don't prioritize it over your teams enjoyment.
So, I am asking this because when I build my characters stats (I've Bern building a lot), I tend to skew them towards getting the most out of.
So an example is that I use point buy, I always make STR my lowest because I don't RP it. But when I do the others, I'll usually adjust it to get the modifiers and bonuses
I agree with Ash that it's subjective and very much a conversation with your table. I don't think there's any issue with maxing out your main stat, but when every wizard of yours has the same spell selection or you take the same feats every time, I tend to give side-eye.
So if I am playing High WIS and INT and 16 gives me a +3 and 17 is also a +3, I'll keep it 16 and maybe use that 1 extra for CON which will then get a +1. Then maybe if the difference is small, I'll put in another stat
Thank you!
Did this with the cleric I made recently. Put stats into WIS and INT and used the Racial bonuses to make up for the others except STR (because who needs that)
And it feels weird cause like i don't want to be like overshadowing anyone but I still want to be effective
There's no way to know what level of mechanical effectiveness the table is okay with until you're with the group. Besides, building characters in a vacuum is one thing, but whether they're allowed at the table is another story.
I think it's important to voice your concerns to the table and keeping an open communication. You can't know if you're overshadowing anyone until communication is had.
^ A million times this.
Hmm. Yeah true. I hadn't just found any table. Each time I join a group and create a character, something happens to prevent sessions
Thank you!
This does help
That can be frustrating, but keep trying! Check out other discords and Startplaying is a good online tool for finding groups (though it does include paid DM services, which I understand not everybody is on board with. Just a heads up!)
The guide linked in my Discord bio is a pretty extensive list of where to search for games/groups. And having a pool of character concepts is great, but do be flexible to tweak anything to fit the vibe and game being offered.
Thing is like every new table will need a new character right? Dnd beyond has limited slots but yeah, I'll keep searching
IMHO - Your example is a minor min max idea, but it is also logical. Min / Max is Like putting 18 in STR and CON for a barbarian then dumpin INT and WIS to like 6 just so u can have the MAX things that matter in battle. I guess the way I look at it is if you are doing everything from the build to the way you play is to JUST be amazing in battle and not give a toot about RP, that is true MIn/Max. BUT if you're in a campaign that is HEVAY combat and little RP then go for it. Again MY opinion here
Yep. Minmaxing is not a term that means the same thing to everyone. Thus, Ash's suggestion to communicate with your table is a good one. The game literally runs on talking, and for me the stuff above the table matters even more than whatever happens in the world of the game itself.
Yes each campaign will need a separate character if you are using Beyond, unless it is all the same DM. the least expensive montly subscription gives u unlimited characters
Oh.oh I get it now. I understand it more. I always consider RP though. Even with stats
Just you know. Never played a session and slightly worried
It sounds like yer all good

Oh wait that awesome! I am struggling to find a campaign right now so maybe this will help me out. Thank you!

How do I train myself to avoid metagaming? I feel so bad when I do it for my family game, im not trying to
Before acting, ask yourself (or the DM as appropriate), "Would my character know this?" If so, proceed! If not, find an alternative.
Could you give us examples of this metagaming?
Well my dad is playing a rogue so i asked to roll insight while he was stealing even though my character wouldn't know (dad is super charismatic). DM let me, but i honestly just forget to separate me and my character
I am a first-time player playing a campaign for now, in a Crooked Moon campaign. ?tag new rogue
Rogue
Launch deadly Sneak Attacks while avoiding harm through stealth
Rogues rely on cunning, stealth, and their foes’ vulnerabilities to get the upper hand in any situation. They have a knack for finding the solution to just about any problem. A few even learn magical tricks to supplement their other abilities. Many Rogues focus on stealth and deception, while others refine skills that help them in a dungeon environment, such as climbing, finding and disarming traps, and opening locks.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 14
Wis. 10
Cha. 8
Likes: Stealth
Complexity: Low
Starting HP: 8 + Con. modifier
The bot post above gives an interesting stat spread for Standard Array. I would suggest the following myself (and feel free to ignore):
STR: 8
DEX: 15
CON: 14
INT: 13
WIS: 10
CHA: 12
Swap WIS/CHA/INT as you like, depending on what skills you want to be good at. It's really difficult to give specific advice about roleplay and story creation without knowing your game/setting, but here are some general tips:
- Unless you've got everyone else's green light, try to pull in the same direction as the party. Don't go off on your own and don't steal from your fellow players.
- Work with your table to make your character feel connected to people/places/things in the world and to others in the group. Maybe that will make you an expert within the party on specific subjects. Lean into that!
- Whatever adventure the DM presents, find a motivaton for your character to pursue the adventure. If "what your character would do" is NOT adventure, you need to adjust (possibly even rolling up a new character who WILL bite the plot hooks).
Thank you a ton, I just wanted some help as a first time player
hello everyone, i am new to dnd just learned about it last week, have been going through links to learn about the game, but now I feel like I need to play a session to understand more about it. Experience the game first hand, can anyone show me the ropes of how things are done here?
I'm new myself, but I reccomend checking out Oneshots in videos and watching how everyone plays, and check out such videos in general

Is it Norma to cancel a campaign when some mental health stuff came up
Cause I did that and I sort of wanna try and start it up and make a post again
Mental health and wellbeing always comes first, so yes it's absolutely normal
Alright cause I canceled twice but I’m sure this time I can keep up
Stressful stuff is over I just wanna host dnd again
If I’m using rage as a Barbarian how much resistance is it to bludgeoning and stuff? I’m level 2
Resistance generally means 50%
iirc there's no fluctuating value to them, its 50% for resistance and 200% (you take double damage) for vulnerability, immunity is immunity
is it ok to be dm and also player
Usually no
Cuz as a dm the sourcebooks would detail the inner workings of a campaign (ie a npc says one thing but is actually lying to you, or this artifact does something important that you aren't meant to find out until way later)
does this make it ok bc i dont just make myself better luck i normally have the worst
So the result is that you basically work with unfair knowledge or you are forced to pretend to not know a thing
ok imma just be both but not do somethings
like what u said not using artifacts
and similir
Can I get some thoughts and opinions on a combination of cantrips and spells from Magic Initiate (2014 rules) focusing on party buffs (most important) and non-combat use? I can think of plenty of spells (Bless, Guidance, Mage Hand, Find Familiar) are all the useful kind of spells I'm looking for. But I'm failing to find a good combination of spells that 1 class offers.
And if it helps, I'm playing a Support heavy Soulknife Rogue Skill Monkey Spy.
Good choices, but you'll have to pick a lane. Cleric initiate gets you guidance and bless. That gives you effectively a standing 1d4 bonus on most skill check as long as you're not trying to be sneaky, and your party will appreciate you more in combat as long as you're fine with spending the action to cast and can maintain concentration.
Wizard initiate gets mage hand and find familiar. I'd say these were the more freeform options. Less direct interaction with the dice, but a lot more versatility in having extra hands around to help with things - hands that can fly, remember.
Also I recommend prestidigitation, it's the Swiss army knife of cantrips.
Yeah, see that's exactly what I've found. 2 good choices and a 3rd throw away choices. Find Familiar, Mage Hand and Pretidigitation was the best triplet I could find. But I was hoping there was something better than Prest. for party buffs, like Bless.
Hi I’m new but I really wanna get into dnd any pointers or ways I should get started?
Honestly, Prest.'s cleaning magic works well for my character story (Always dressed to the 9s with nary a hair out of place) But I'm just not yet creative enough to know how to use it in other ways.
Cool in hot weather, warm in the cold. "Have you seen this person?" An evening picking up tips working in a bar making magical cocktails.
Hey @blazing sinew , looks like you're trying to post in #find-a-game. You can't, but this might help:
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Hello there.im new to dnd but i have tons of lore, world building, mapmaking and overall fantasy and interactive experience. I know how the game functions in short terms but i do have lots of questions. Hope i can become a part of the community and learn how to play the game :b!
Feel free to ask away. If your questions are generic newbie questions, right here is perfect. If they are more about world building, you should look in #dm-world-building. If it is about DMing, #dm-discussion, in depth Character discussion, #character-discussion.
How long do campaigns last?
that varies VASTLY. I have run one that meet 1-2 times per week for over 7 years and have had some once every other week last about a year. and everything in between, and that is just me, one guy lol
Oh wow.
when I start campaigns, i work with the players to get a feel of how long they want it to be and what level they wish to achieve in that time frame
Alrighty!
How do i find parties? And can campaigns include more people as sessions go on?
They can but I have found that the longer the campaign has been playing, the harder it is to introduce a new character in a way that makes sense. As for finding a group, follow the instructions in the bot I will trigger in a sec. That applies here. There are also Facebook groups, reddit has things i think, and other places as well

for sure. I find that it seems (personal opinion here) well over 75% of tables will accept newbies with open arms, as long as you have at least familiarized yourself with the basics and are willing to learn.

Are campaigns mostly played via voice or text?
both, plus the third option of in person. The dream (for many / most) is to play in person, but scheduling can be a major inhibitor. Then man man many folks now play online with voice (maybe cams) and some way of digital characters and maybe even maps. Scheduling is a bit easier but still an issue. Then some do what is called Play By Post, where the group use text to play out the game which allows for interaction at any time, but is a slower method as you have to wait for responses. There are even a few groups where most of the players use voice, but they may have a player who has needs that need consideration that text there responses immediately
Wow
Alright thanks for your time
Id ask more but ig ill just do my own research
Cheers mate!
anytime. ask away. or message me if u have more
hey guys!! i’m going for my first dnd session today and i really don’t know what to expect, can anyone give me a little run down on how to prepare? thanks! ^^
Be ready to Have fun, Get creative, work with the other players to be an effective team (it is not a solo sport lol). Most importantly, since you are new is listen to the DM and experienced players on the rules and be open to be flexible with your ideas
Hello 🙂
howdy. let us know if u have questions
So I want to create a characters that I have in mind. Does anyone have a like spreadsheet they particularly like to use to make their characters? Or even a phone app/website recommendation?
the 2 most popular sites for character creation are D&D Beyond which is the official site and Roll20 (.net) which has been arou nd for a long time and probably the second most popular
Awesome! Thank you so much for your referrals. I will look into both of them

Hey Guys, I am a newbie DM and already got a Group to play with, we want to start with a pre made campaign from DnD Beyond. Do you guys recommend purchasing it from DnD Beyond ( digital vers) or directly on Roll20, we want to play it online.
first, figure out what platform you want to use to play, and if its using 5e or 5.5e
like, DnDBeyond does have its maps thing, so that might be a viable option for VTT
5e
anyone else used roll20 and dndbeyond's maps that can answer this?
like, both run poor on my pc so i don't use either.
ah, thanks for trying to help tho, appreciate it 🙂
