But like Chrono said, there aren't really classes that do it too well because you can't just put up a Reinhardt barrier like in OW
lol
well i will say there is plenty of healing and some classes get access to a lot of it
Got it. Guess learning what each class specifically does is a job I gotta do on my own. Thanks tho
Tanks don't exist in the most literal sense, just people who die slower than others in a way
So you can't just jump in as a "tank" and force the enemy to attack you
Nothing wrong with playing a "tank" ofc but something to keep in mind about
Very crude description of classes
Barbarian: rage, big damage big health
Bard: music, high charisma and very useful with skills
Cleric: religious, healer/support
druid: uses nature for magic, turns into animals
Fighter: just hit things
Monk: kinda like fighter? but they have ki points that they can use for special attacks
Ranger: the druid and the fighter had a baby
Rogue: thief, sneak and stab
Sorcerer: spell casting but change some of the rules because I said so
Wizard: has the biggest spell list but very little features
Warlock: has alot of features and customization but not really the widest spell list
It can definitely be alot to learn at first but my first experience with dnd was "I wanna be a sneaky thief assassin like ezio from assassin's creed" and everyone said "play a rogue" (true story)
Unique resource that Monks use for some of their abilities
Ki points are a resource that monk's have that they can use to activate effects, the most common one is flurry of blows which allows them to make 2 attacks as a bonus action
oooh okay so it's basically their personal reasource they have
Exactly
At level 2 you start with Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense and Step of the Wind
As you gain levels you get Deflect Missiles, Stunning Strike and Empty Body
Also i dont got a phyicsal dice so what do yall recommand of a digital dice/website?
i practically know nothing about dnd but have wanted to get into it for like years could someone help me figure out to start or what to do

I have a question about how the armor class works I get what It means but idk how to calculate it
AC starts off as 10 + your dexterity modifier
That's without equipping any armor
Once you add armor, it defaults to the armors base AC plus some degree of your dexterity modifier.
So if you were to equip your character with leather armor:
- base AC 12 + dexterity modifier
Yeah I get that I’m just wondering like if I have a 20 in AC and a hit that deals like 5 damage is coming dose it deduct any damage or adds modifiers to the role
Nope - armor class does not reduce damage. It's just the difficulty challenge an attacker must meet or beat to hit the target.
So if you have an AC of 20, an enemy would need to roll a 20 or higher to meet or beat your armor class (natural 20s, aka critical hits, automatically hit).
I should say roll D20 and add any modifiers/bonuses to meet or beat 20
So if a goblin has an AC of 14, you would roll a D20, add your modifiers and bonuses, and if it meets or beats a 14, you hit the goblin and can now roll damage.
Okay okay thanks for the help
https://limewire.com/d/NcLfN#8cQ3ljAEB3 heres my character sheet edited now, is everything correct?
What websites work well for online dnd on a tablet (eg dnd beyond,roll20) and if i join a campaign do I have to own the digital source book if I want to make a character not using the extremely limited free version??
i have heard that Shard is very light on hardware and software resources, so should work well on a mobile or tablet.
DMs have the ability to share books to the campaign if they have a subscription, most VTTs do that.
I have a maybe stupid question but what does passive wisdom mean?
passive wisdom means 10 + your WIS modifier
You'd either need to own the digital book for that VTT, or use a VTT which allows you to write down your features from a physical book (roll20 makes that pretty easy, but not sure how it works on tablets)
Or if your DM or someone in the group has the ability for the VTT used, they may be able to share their books to use
But any site that allows you to use paid content for free is piracy
Roll20 seems pretty demanding on hardware. my own full blown PC has problems with it, even more when dynamic lighting is involved.
What i meant by "free" was on dnd beyond there is the basic like subclasses and backgrounds and stuff but even for access to all the 2024 stuff you need the digital book
i just did some experiments on Shard with their 2024 conversion supplement, messaged you some results rather than clog up this channel
Yo =)
howdy. Let us know if you have questions
There should be a way to rearrange your abilitys to have a +3 in int but other than that it looks good
wait sorry idk what u mean
Your can arrange the standard array to give your character a 17 (+3 modifier) in their main stat
Also you’re missing your background’s origin feat
oop what’s that
One of the things you get with your background
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#OriginComponents
Make sure to check chapter 2 of the free basic rules as it goes through the steps of creating a character
Anyone want to do a campaign with me? I’d love to host one
No DNDbeyond stuff or like online dnd, just a discord call while we roll dice physically
please post in the #find-a-game channel per the server rules as soliciting for games is not permitted elsewhere such as here

Howdy.
My physical and mental health have been complete dog water in the past several months. I'm looking into DnD to have a reason to get out
My dad and sister seem interested. I actually think Dad would be a really good DM given his sense of humor
Have them read up on the basics in the Bot right above your first message for some great basics
I DM my kids and my son has becom a DM
ok i OFFICIALLY finished my character sheet
me when i’m planning to make another one..
omg when I left my d&d table I literally had characters tied to one another
like This assassin snake disguise kit person is being hunted by this warrior who died and was being investigated by a fanatic squire who has been following the lad
Alright... I finished learning and helping my friends learn about dnd and the rules.. I've been trying to find a DM in this server and beyond but we haven't found one yet... I truly need help
you have to use patience while looking. did you post a looking for for what you folks are looking for so if it matches a DM they can reach out to u
in terms of cantrips and lvl1 spells, does 5e or 5.5e artificer get more spells?
i think spell progression is the same, not like 5.5e gives extra cantrips or lvl1 slots its more balance/clarity stuff
Not in this case
2014 artificer has more cantrips at any level
2014 artificifer likely allows you to prepare more spells at low levels. Depending on your stats though eventually 2024 artificer beats the amount of spells you can prepare
With an 18 int 2024 beats 2014 at level 7 (6 prepared spells 2014, 7 prepared spells 2024)
With a 20 int 2024 actually never beats 2014
(I lied, 2024 only briefly wins at level 7. 2014 is almost always better in terms of prepared spells and cantrips)
Any advice to a first timer in dnd I’ve watched a lot of actual play but never played and I have to DM for my group who has also never played?
Start simple and use a pre written adventure
I just bought the last mines of phandelva I think that’s what it’s called
dont stress too much about making mistakes
luuk I have a question. Should I use bone wizard's remake of 2014 alchemist, or use 2024 alchemist?
Bone wizard?
He's a youtuber. He did a full remake of 2014 alchemist with really cool things. I also like some of the parts of 2024 alchemist, but from what ive heard 2024 alchemist is still weaker than 2024 other subclasses, but is better than base 2014 alchemist
Dont know enough about them to advice on it
fair
Hello, i’m about to start a dnd campaign and I wanted to pick a barbarian cause everyone picked a spellcaster (bard+wizard+warlock) and be the tank but I noticed that they just added a revised Pugilist class on dnd beyond and I wanted to know if it is worth it or is it too “dangerous” (i’ve ready he’s high risk hish reward) i’m not an expert player and I dont wanna just die randomly cause no healer. I also never played barbarian.
Ps:i already asked my dm he’s ok with pugilist
Ah the third party class? I don’t know much about it, though barbarian is always a safe pick.
The tankiest?
ask in #character-discussion as folks there may hve better answers
^this
Damn i got redirected here from the dnd beyond support chat sorry
It’s a grey area huh
coming here is fine. just thoes channels are better suited for your question
I think i’ll pick barbarian and be safe
Also english isnt my fist language so it might be fit for a dumb barbarian
Hi! I'm new to D&D only played three games so far spread out over the last three-ish years. but I was wondering if anyone knows of any D&D groups here on Discord to join that are easy for beginners and LGBTQ+ friendly? I can't handle the overstim of doing D&D nights at my local irl gamestore cause the overlap of the multitude of groups in the same area but i really want to get back into D&D and have something fun to look forward to.

Yes it is great source for players and DMs
Hello
I have never played in or ran a dnd campaign
However, I have kind of been elected to be the dm for a campaign, which is a homebrew that I am making.
My question is, What all do I have to take care of before a first session? I have a map of the continent in which this is taking place, a general outline of the lore of the world causing the party to go on the adventure, and a dms reference map of the initial town in which the game starts
What all do I need more?
I am still also working on the individual characters a pc might run into in the first session
ik
Where else do I ask lol
True
anything like good character options
#dm-discussion might be a good place to ask!
No shade, i was just making a observational joke
Ook ty
Ye i understood
Hey all, how's it going?
As a player,
I'd say the standard is introduce the players to eachother, maybe give the players each their own little moment to shine, give a plot hook, first session(s) are usually light hearted and just the beginning
u should warship bread as a god
ik one
Hmm ok ty
Will there be a need at the start to map out the entire area around? For example planning a dungeon on that particular road, random NPCs doing (smth) on that particular road, or anything of the sort?
Id say no
Dont map out the whole tri-state area, only areas that they explore, mention a town or city maybe
over planning is bad
Map out the road as they explore, give some info on the dungeon as they explore, etc
Rule of thumb: only give information that they find out
That sounds stupid and simple
Hmm ok
Thats because it is
Perfectly normal for NPCs to mention areas and cities in banter and or if questioned
Dont stress it, dont over prepare
Over planning isn’t necessarily bad but you can plan tons of stuff they will never see so it may be unnecessary
But it IS dnd, expect the unexpected
I prepare for five potential scenarios and most often they choose the 8 th option
Sure
I do have a month around until we are gonna start the campaign too, so I am not sure what I can do to prep the game in that amount of time
Lol
Map out the campaign
Think about the BBEG, Setting, NPCs, Plot hooks
Ok
NPCs I think are the only things left on that list
Bbeg and plot hooks are completely done
Few minor changes maybe I'll have to make to them
Ok thank you sm
does dnd beyond's character creator not automatically change your stats when you lvl up? or do you need to change it manually
Your stats will remain as they are until you hit certain character levels, wherein you can take the ability score improvement feat. In the character creator class tab if you select that feat you’ll be able to select which scores are increased
Yeah, there are no default increases, so it can't do it automatically
Proficiency Bonus and HP are adjusted automatically though, and stuff like spell slots
How much proficiency bonus does a lvl 2 have
From levels 1-4, your proficiency bonus is +2
You can see each levels proficiency bonus on this table:

heya!!

Hiya, I have a call with my new group this afternoon to familiarise myself with foundry and get some support creating my character ahead of our session 0 next Sunday. Our DM wants us to have our characters backstories completed by next Sunday. I’ve opted for a winged tiefling Cleric. The campaign is set in a homebrew city taking up the space of Elturel close to baldursgate. The deities are Aphrodite, psyche, and Eros. A large amount of time will be spent in hades/the rest of the underworld. Is there anything I should consider for my backstory and characters personality etc?
Hope this is the right place to post this, I’m brand new so please be gentle lol
ok so my other character sheet was just a tester and i’ve just made one that’s a different class and background but same race
anyone willing to check the character sheets for them..
Hello, I am reviewing my character om dndbeyond and I noticed "Sap" under my Spear. Is "Sap" automatically applied when I hit successfully with my spear on an enemy?
Mastery properties such as sap, vex, nick and others are only enabled if your character has the relevant mastery feature for that weapon. Not all character classes get masteries.

Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Thanks bro
hello
Howdy. Let us know if u have questions
I’d like to know more about DnD, anyone can private chat me to tell me about this pls
Up here (#dnd-newcomers message) has a bunch of guides but if you've got particular questions feel free to ask.
What do u want to know pink.
It’s easier to just ask here rather than dms because that way you have more eyes on your questions
as someone new to D&D, having friends who play often but I cant play with them (due to timezones) I am not overly familiar with how to play, have seen 7 episodes from legends of avantris's YouTube playlist from once upon a witchlight (still bingewatching that) i wondered if anyone had advice on character creation? ive made one on D&D beyond but have no clue if its any good 😂
Anyone open to trying a new version I’m making where if you go to the crucible (think planet doom from ready player one), if you die you lose all your brought gear. There are others places to go though, like mountain climbing, either way. And all you need is 6 D6’s for the simple mode. I tried posting it in looking for players, but as usual I don’t understand it, so please ignore this if not interested. 🙏.
I like to know how to play… and make friends
I’m not sure that’s really a newcomer question
This is not the server and definitely not the channel for this

In my opinion it helps to find a group and THEN make a character together, that way you’ll all be able to have synergy with each other, but you may just be able to edit the character you’ve already made before you start playing if it needs to fit the group better
yeah my thoughts were to edit the character, had a specific idea for one, and no group to play with etc etc
Got it. Well if you have a local game store they often have resources to find a group, and there’s also channels here that will help you find a group. I was lucky enough to have a bunch of existing friends that also wanted to start playing, but I know not everyone has that luxury
#find-a-game might be the place for this server
appreciate it! i got inspired to try D&D out from youtube shorts and videos haha, and from my friends experiences too
Hi everyone im just wondering if having no mic is a dealbreaker for dnd?
You can always join a play by post game
Older Player returning back to playing D&D, after 15 year break, 58 gay was playing D&D back when there was box set that said Basic and Expert and AD&D the Unearthed Arcana was announce to be released. have keep up on the source books but work was always a factor and finding player, So yes total new to this new way of playing the game. Player and DM have a very good Library of Source martial including Dragon and Dungeon Magazines.
Looking to find a group of players, Prefer playing Dwarf Fighter / Cleric know Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms well. Out of CA but pretty open to play time. These days playing FF14, Timberborn, and Baldur's Gate trilogy. Hit me up I don't bite much.

Welcome! I’ve always wanted to play AD&D and B/X but my group is so used to 5e at this point that I think it would be very jarring for them. Hopefully the inverse is not true for you as well, haha

go the channel as directed by the bot, you'll be looking to make a post in #looking-for-dm specifically.
Additionally I’d advise to split the group into two groups of 4. 8 players is about double the average expected party size.
can i be added? im a new comer though
It’ll be more difficult for the average DM to balance encounters and ensure everyone shares the spotlight equally. The typical party size is about 3-5 players, for reference
true but just to like learn a bit and have that first experience you know
Oooh, I don’t know that

I do have a question most custom race are normally fine but is a race based off the mimics witch i call mimicspawn ok? I'm sure what the limit of races lie at
Not sure* stupid auto correct
Depends on the table and DM! Some aren't okay with any homebrew.
My gut tells me you’d have a hard time finding a DM willing to run that by it is possible or being the DM who does Allow it lol
Guys, this is my first campaign.
I'm torn between druid, and wizard; which one should I choose? 😭
Traditionally, you just pick a species from the list of species available. Homebrew isn't recommended for new players.
Hello I hear this server has an advertisement channel but I can't find it i want to advertise my new dnd hub open for anyone who wants to spectate, play and dm

Thank you
They both play fairly differently. What did you want to do mechanically, both in and out of combat?
Hey guys Im new to D&D. I've heard about it but never played it haha so Im hopinh to learn and join a campaign
are u into roleplaying?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Yes haha I love roleplaying which is one of the main reasons I want to join a campaign.
Do you like to roleplay? @spice vessel
i'm getting into it as well add me as a friend
Okay will do @spice vessel we can practice our roleplaying for when we join a campaign
I will say, those are two of the more complicated classes to run as a newcomer, especially Druid since there’s a lot of spell preparation and having to figure out wild shape, but whatever gets you interested in playing more is going to be the class that’s best for you
if you find a dungeon master who's willing to have another newcomer join his campaign lmk
Do not solicit for games here folks
Will do, friend. Keep me posted as well.

Hi do you think a druid Aarokorca good? Lmk
Ok so I've got a charter made and I just use some kinda command to find a game right?
Read #find-a-game!
I don't recommend either for starting. Wizard has the most varied spell list, and it's more rewarding a class for people who are very experienced, but that makes it equally stressful for someone who's getting thrust into many, many descriptions for spells. If you must, use Evoker; it's simplest since it's very damage-centric.
Druid's probably more manageable, but you have to determine what you play the class for. Do you intend to spend most of it in Wild Shape? If so, you're a Moon Druid who'll have a simpler rotation of things to do. If not, your Wild Shape's more fuel for your other abilities.
Not any worse than any other race as a druid. Your race is generally not gonna have a major impact on your character, or make or break it
Only thing to note is that some DMs opt to ban flying races due to some difficulties they can bring into planning, so that's something to consider just in case

Hey guys! I'm new and I understand almost everything on my sheet except hit points, could someone explain it in simple terms and how it is used in a session?
?tag new hit points
No tag hit found in category new.

Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
There we go - thanks Nugget
No problemo!
That's very convenient!
I’ve made a habit of learning the bot commands cuz it saves time
Idk all of them yet, but it’s a good start
If you have any further questions or want more details, feel free to ask!
hey just thought to ask every class looks fun but since i'm new whats easier
just thought to take those ones into my mine when i make my first character
The easiest classes would be fighter and rogue, but if look at the class overview in the creating a character chapter of the rules from the 2024phb it has a table on how complex each class would usually be.
i saw that and wasn't sure if it changed just wanted extra feedback thanks
np
i have another question if that's okay, i'm wondering if i should make my characters before finding a dm or i should wait to find a dm and build a character based off that world that is made/created
You can do either or.
If you make one before I'd say hold off on the backstory and stick to standard array on the ability scores.
You can also make practice characters to help you better understand how to make characters and then make a new character after you find a DM.
i start to make a character to see how it is on d&d beyond i have many choices for rules anyone i should focus to build my knowledge on?
I'd say for the now, keep it simple and for learning the rules you can stick to the class rules your making the character, and the general rules in the playing the game chapter.
how far should i look into a class i'm looking at fighter and i'm wondering if i should prep for a level for just try to read every single thing about the class?
I'd say read upto the level 3 feats & traits as a lot of people will start their campaigns at level 3, other than that you don't need to read further until you reach those levels, but you can if you want to.
for weapon mastery on a fighter should i build those weapons around my fighting style or does it not really matter and i can really pick what i want?
also sorry for all the questions
the questions are fine it's what we're hear for.
I would say that your weapon mastery should reflect the weapons that you'll be using, although as you can change one mastery after each Long rest you take it likely won't really matter what you pick.
for this starter kinda first build should i try to make real things for all these characteristics
or just kinda leave those for now because i think i can make those when i'm gonna craft a real character
Which characteristics?
oh mostly rp type parts like background and stuff i thought to try to learn the more combat things first then think of building their stories
Well, not essential but might be helpful practice.
i've just made ideas and have note pages that's my main reason i'm not going into those because i love just making characters oc stuff like that for d&d just never have played and i thought to push myself into trying now
Guys is to possible to play DND with only 2 beginners (Me and some1 else)
Go for it. #character-discussion is always open.
It can be done. Here: #dnd-newcomers message
well just made the character i think it's okay i made sure to make the standard array
i think i've found out most of the thing about the gameplay how should i start a campaign?
Find a group to join and play D&D with
You can check our Looking For Game channels here - read #find-a-game to learn more on how to use those.
Or you can check Roll20, Demiplane, or other online game finding services/tools.
If you're looking for in-person games, check out your local game and book stores, local libraries, etc.
thanks for all the info just went i checked here nothing seems to be that beginner friendly that's why i'm unsure if i should ask
for finding game
Many groups don't mind taking on new to D&D players as long as said players show they've spent some of their own time and effort trying to learn.
What most groups don't like is a someone unwilling to try and learn on their own - because that means they have to use their limited game playing time to have to try and teach someone everything.
So it never hurts to ask if you can join, mentioning that you're new.
I will note that if you're a minor, it can be a lot harder to get into a random online D&D game because of the social and legal issues surrounding being a minor.
i see but are most people okay with people just under that 18 boundary?
like 17 16?
Don't know - varies by group and social/cultural/geographical and jurisdictional location likely.
okay thanks and just one last question how would i set up the looking for dm page just want to do something with that before i go to bed because man i wanna set something up before i head to bed been reading for hours
Sure - go to #find-a-game and start typing/looking-for and select the dm option that Discord pops up. The bot will then give you a form to fill out (make sure to follow server rules and don't share personally identifying information such as exact age, emails, etc.). Once completed, submit the form. The bot creates the post in #looking-for-dm and then attaches a thread to your post. Use the thread to make any corresctions, updates, clarifications, or to communicate with interested folks.
You can also go through #looking-for-players and communciate interest in games in the thread attached to game posts there.
And then there's #looking-for-community which is other D&D servers that have different kinds of D&D games that might fit your needs.
Finally there is #paid-looking-for-game where you can pay to have a spot at a D&D game/campaign.
thanks man this server has been such a help and helped me really make me wanna start this i wish i could thank the other guys for their help too
Good luck and hope you're able to find a great group to play D&D with! Great D&D can be an amazing and fun experience!
But also trust your gut - if something feels off or fishy, trust yourself.
Better no D&D than bad D&D
We play games like D&D to have fun - and if things are heading in the not-fun direction, time to speak up, pause the game, figure out what's happening and if it can be addressed. And sometimes the best way to address things is, "I'm sorry. This isn't working out for me. Thanks for letting me play but I feel it's best if I step away and you can continue without me."
Not all D&D games are the right kind of D&D games for you. And that's okay.
But usually many of these "wait, this is not what I was expecting or find fun in my games" can be addressed through open communication among respectful individuals who work together to try and ensure everyone playing has an enjoyable time playing together.
i see okay i'm probably gonna take note of these and screenshot this and put it into my note has reminders thanks. i'll try and make sure i enjoy the campaigns i'm in and if needed i will leave them thanks for everything bro your great man
A sign of a good D&D group is they usually have a session 0 where they establish expectations of appropriate player and character behavior and boundaries (what's a no go as far as topics). They will also tend to discuss the kind of D&D game folks want to play and maybe work together as a group to create characters that will fit well into that kind of D&D game/campaign.
Then often the DM will check with players after the games to make sure things are going well and discuss any concerns.
that's what i've been doing holding back on making crazy made character because i wanted to build with what the dm had because i really want to help build into their world and just make everyone's life easier in the group
hey im new to dnd and know almost nothing except few videos from the youtube. sadly i cant find a group that plays dnd in my area and hope to play online. where can i get started and how can i play.
If you would also like to have a solid spell list to fight with, bard.
If you'd like to really get in the mix and surprise folks out of shadows with a pop of extra damage go rogue..
The bard depends on CHA for their insipiration and strengthening thier magic.
Rogues dont need it outside of the social aspect.. though its nice have at least a bit should you ever get caught.

Then just do a martial with high charisma.
ok thnx
Hello, fellow followers of Bahamut! (and everyone else)
if i were to want feed back or ideas on my character, where would i post that perchance?
Hellu everyone. I am brand new to this world (Came after watching a bit of dimension 20 from dropout) and wanna try D&D
Welcome!
But everything is quite overwhelming
aww man, i got confused and just erased all my char from there:(
It certainly can be, but don't try to memorize everything all at once. If you forget anything while playing, there will be 4-5 other players at the table with you to help remind you. And don't be afraid to use the rule books as references while playing as well. That's totally normal. One trick to make your life easier is, instead of memorizing what the rules actually say about any given topic, just try to remember where that rule is in the book. That way, you can pull it up quickly whenever you need it.
The main things you should focus on before you start playing are Chapter 1: Playing the Game, and Chapter 2: Character Creation

How does this work?
2 + your Intelligence modifier + 5 times your artificer level (the defender has a number of Hit Dice [d8s] equal to your artificer level)
I don't get how I'm supposed to calculate it
Where would I go for help making a charecter in a home-brew campin
Lets say you are a level 3 artificer, and your intelligence modifier is +4
2+4+(5*3)=21
😭 Thankyou. I am reading multiple things at multiple places and don't know what the steps should be. Like I wanna join a game (and I know that sounds impatient). Should I read up something, then ask somewhere and wait for someone to pick me up for a game?
Aaaah okay, I get it now
If you're following the normal rules of character creation then you can use #character-discussion
If you're using homebrew rules for character creation then you should use #homebrew
Reading through the first few sections of the free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) is a solid idea as not every table is open to teaching folks. I believe having some sense of the basics increases your chances of joining a game, but that's just my own perspective.
So, its best to try and get a grasp on the rules before you join a campaign, but once you feel ready, then you should cast a wide net. Think of it like applying for a job. Reach out to multiple people/groups. Try using other discord servers and other websites as well. If people respond to you and you have a few options to pick from, then you can select the one (or more) that best fit with your preferences for things like playstyle and theme
Got it. Thankyou so much..I'll come back with questions if any once I go through the rules.
Great. Please do. We are more than happy to help
Heyo, I'm kinda new to the server as well as DND as a whole. I have participated in a few campaigns but I have an interest in DMing if anyone has ideas or is able to help with that I would accept any
Help any one is offering as I see people put in effort for their DMing and have a bit of difficulty replicating this skill
My suggestion is to use a one-shot or prewritten adventure so you can focus your efforts on running the game rather than splitting your attention between running AND designing the adventure. There's a bunch of good advice on YouTube and blogs regarding DMing, which you should by all means check out, but don't let that stop you from diving in and running. Like most creative tasks, the theory can only go so far; eventually, you need to actually do it!
We have #dm-discussion for more talk in that vein.
Hello guys, I'm new and want to get into DnD, I tried offline but noone near me plays the game. Hence, I'm looking for online groups to start my journey.
Read #find-a-game for info about this server's Looking for Games/Groups channels.
thanks
This channel (and much of the server in general) is largely for questions!
Also this is not the channel (nor any not in the Looking For Games section) for soliciting or organizing games. Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels to solicit and organize games. Thanks!
Hello! I’ve just found out that the dnd community has a discord (I feel stupid lol) and I hope to have a fun adventure with all of you!
Welcome!
@pseudo forge You seem to know a lot about spellcasting in DnD, can I ask for some advice in PMs about magic?
I have a lot of questions and I don't want to flood chat
here is fine honnestly
it's what the channel is made for
No. It's not.
I mean sure why not
I will flood the channel with the amount of help I need, and I trust tasha's experience. She's given good advice that helps me consistently
Just so ya know I will mainly be talking in a such a way that interprets the rules aka R.A.I
That's ok, that's how my party is kinda rolling right now and a LOT of homeruling based on real world logic.
Not the best idea in a world like but continue
Right? Idk why my party insists on doing this, I'm going to talk to them about it. They're the type to ask "Does sound travel through a portal?"
Hello
Welcome!
Howdy. Let us know if you have questions
How do I determine a creatures saving throw, or some kind of specific weakness about the creature from the DM? Like what would be DM language for "I want to know the specifics about what this is". Because I don't see myself going far as a control wizard if I can't identify somethings weakness
I'm worried if I outright ask for a statistic, my party is going to say I'm metagaming
That's what I'm worried about really here
Ahh. There's a rule for that somewhere.
To give you an idea, my character has a +7 to history and a +7 to arcana and an ancient warforged. They would absolutely know specific weaknesses like this if I was given the opportunity to check
Asking in character about what a creature’s weaknesses is pretty DM fiat iirc (unless it’s that rule about a check). Heck there are some specific features that do it.
This is going to vary a ton. I don't offer my players any way to determine a thing's weaker stats in the moment, and I don't run a game where weaknesses are a thing really. Sometimes they roll poorly on a high stat. Sometimes they roll well on a bad stat. You try things and sometimes they fail; that's my DM philosophy, but not every DM has the same approach.
So far my dm has just been saying "You know what it is becuase your Paladin is a high elf" and basically using race to determine that when that's not really RAW...
Pair up with a monster hunter ranger and an inquisitive rogue to ferret out details on your enemies
I have +7 to arcana and history. I shouldn't have to be a specific class or race to know something. I have a cloistered scholar background.
ususally they'll ask for an arcana/nature check or ask if your character would have history with or studied up on the creature or something to that extent
I do...
He just never asked.
Can't recall them. What are they?
then you're set
Do I need to be like "I want to know this things specifics, can I ask to make an ability check for history/arcana?"
The above mentioned checks to determine it, but I don’t believe it to be an official rule.
I am so sure they exist somewhere but I'm away from my books. Tasha's, or some ranger feature, there's something official we can crib from as a guide.
You would probably ask “I would like to recall information on this monster for useful information.”
Players usually dictate actions rather than request checks
Then add “what do I know or remember?”
After that if you don’t get a check then you can ask if you really want to
Anyone playing now?

is it particularly hard to find groups as a teen or someone who's new to the game? im searching through #looking-for-players and almost all of them are 18+ or experienced only.. are there any tips for finding some groups?
might take a few days to find a listing; but there's plenty of games out there without that restriction
Being a minor does mean it will be harder to find a group to join due to the legal and cultural/social issues of internet strangers playing with minors.
ahh okay, glad to hear it
Thank you... Thinking about starting with warlock
warlock is fun
it's a very versatile class that almost half allows you to build your own class via the Invocation system c:
Just expect to be casting a lot of Eldritch Blast in combat or perhaps going a more martial route with either melee or ranged weapons via Pact of the Blade
Excellent choice.

#looking-for-dm might help
Hello. I need help. I'm creating a character in dndbeyond.com and I want to add lycanthropy to my character's character sheet. How do I do that?
Its a lot of info😵💫😵💫
You cannot solicit for players or DMs in any channel other than the LFG channels. I know you already did but that’s how it is. Please follow the rules like the rest of us. Patience is critical with these things
You can also look at DM's looking for players in #looking-for-players or even other D&D community servers in #looking-for-community . You can also pay for a spot in a D&D game in #paid-looking-for-game.
But yes, do not solicit or organize games outside of the LFG channels as it's off-topic.
No official way.
Because it's not intended for players to have control of such characteristics
What's the unofficial way? Homebrewing? My character was born a lycanthrope. I need to be able to track that on my character sheet. My DM said they will allow it but they are treating it more like Wild Shape where I'm only given a limited number of opportunities to transform for every long rest. And the duration is limited as well. Probably only an hour each time I use it.
Ask your DM as you'll want to work with them to develop whatever homebrew (e.g. your own made up rules/options) to make this work well for your group/game.
Well it sounds like you just earned wild shape
None of the curse, all of the benefits
My character is a wizard/necromancer. Should I subclass in Druid so I can get Wild Shape onto my character sheet?
I don't know - work with your DM on how they want to handle this.
Lycanthropy generally removes the character from player control and becomes something the DM then runs.
In terms of D&D Beyond itself, you'll probably need to homebrew something
The Blood Hunter class has a variation of lycanthropy
There is the Shifter race, which is the closest thing to an official lycanthrope player race

Welcome let us know if u have questions
Thank you
I am so frustrated, I told my party about the positioning of spells thing and they all insist their melee range is zero and they have to be right against the enemy RAW, and as an AOE controll spell wizard... that just... does not work. They're not understanding what I'm saying about movement during turns, about moving after attacks while enemies are prone so they don't get opportunity attacks.
They don't understand that saying there is a 5ft gap and they can reach that (that's fairly standard for martials, right?) allows me to cast an AOE spell with exact positioning to help them...
I don't think any of them have played with a spellcaster before and they're all saying "it's my character" or "what my character would do"
Like we're not even saying for convenience sake they're not caught in the AOE because I can control my spell even though I can do that RAW
I need to know: Is this a bad playgroup?
"My character would absolutely charge straight ahead and give the baddie a hug" is what they're telling me, which like that's what they're doing as tank and dps roles but they're stripping my agency completely to support them...
"It's what my character would do" is good when it enhances fun at the table. If it detracts, it's no good.
So at what point do I say enough is enough and leave? Do I respond with "it's what my character would do" when I cast web and ensnare them all?
But this isn't really a newcomer question, so do be aware if a mod suggests moving to another channel like #dnd-discussion!
I can't move now they won't have the context
I'd have to send all my messages again which is a nuisance
It would be more disruptive than helpful...
I'm asking this because I feel it's a new player question because I'm genuinely asking for advice as a new player
When do I say it's enough?
I'm fond of the chart: https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder_RPG/comments/3aw84m/resolving_basic_behavioral_problems_a_flowchart/
When it crosses a line into "I can't deal with this" isn't something anyone else can say for you.
Let me look at this really quickly
What does it mean by "a winnar is you?"
Is it just memily saying you're a winner or a whiner?
Idk.
It means, "Good job, you did it. Success."
Honestly, it sounds like it may not be a good fit of a group for you. Sometimes you just don't mesh with playstyles
Though, I think there may be some confusion on your side too about the rules
They do need to be standing next to the enemy if they have a 5 ft reach
And an enemy being prone doesn't stop them from making an opportunity attack. They just make it at disadvantage
Then how am I supposed to cast an AOE spell if they're positioned right on top of it?
Well, you can often position AOE effects to just get the enemy on the edge
Or use spells which select targets instead of all in an area
If you have good initiative, you can cast it before they run in. If they're on one side of the enemy, you may be able to hit the enemy on the other side without hitting your group, things that select targets over an area... There are options, though it's hard to say exactly what will work without knowing the specific battle.
There is a specific ruling where if an enemy is prone they cannot make opporunity attacks...
Where?
Okay, well if it's a house-rule, it's a house-rule I guess
Not according to the rules.
PHB, p.195
Chapter/heading?
Wait, no, that's not actually in the PHB
I assumed you were talking homebrew
Also, which PHB
Page 195 of the 2024 PHB is Orcs
Probably hit a banned word by accident
Specifically where is the ruling you're sourcing? You can post a link, iirc
That has happened so many times the filters are insane here
But I can't think of anything in the SAC that says you can't make OAs from Prone
Since that's not a rule
Regardless, it may be true at your table if the DM has decided it is. But you should still have some options on AOEs.
And the group may still not be a good fit
I don't own the sage advice compendium I just looked it up...
How am I supposed to determine this mid game?
The SAC is a free document available on D&DBeyond
I don't think sage advice is even own-able. You can just link to the rule.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/sae
If you’re getting it from some other source, it may either be a fake version or part of a site that hosts or otherwise gives access to pirated content
I mean, ideally you're all using the same set of rules and you have some kind of link to it for quick reference. Either the book itself or the free basic rules on DDB. Based on earlier stuff you said though, it sounds like your DM may be using some kind of wild rules mishmash, which probably isn't helping things
And it's not always something you look up midgame. Midgame I usually just let the DM make a ruling and then bring it up later unless it's actually life or death. Or I look it up on someone else's turn
I'm trying to figure out what to do with a limited resource and 12 options as a first time spellcaster 😭
On their turns
Do you have a damaging cantrip? If you haven't thought of anything else by your turn, it rarely hurts to cast a damaging cantrip
You don't have to use a spell slot every turn
Then my plan completely falls apart when someone asks "does that affect all creatures?"
I know I can do that but I really want to help my party more and cast fun supportive spells rather than just being a cantrip dispenser...
I'd also recommend spending some time learning your spells outside of the game. So you know what you have that works in different kinds of situations, such as AOEs
You don't want to have to figure it out mid-game. That should largely be a reminder
I thought I did, but I did not rules lawyer my spells enough
This is my first time playing DnD and a spellcaster...
I didn't evwn think faerie fire affects everything
It even says "your choice" but no it's the COLOR not the creatuees and objects, despite being in the same sentence and having an unclear reference
I guess I just need to call out my spells and say "MOVE YALL, I'M CASTING A SPEEEEEELL"
My character has a charisma of 8 that's going to go well with my party.
Ideally your fellow players should understand that if they don’t get out of the way they will get hit by AoEs, and you guys will collaborate on a strategy together.
If my DM makes them affected by my spell even though I told them to move to cast it I'm probably just going to leave.
Frankly I’m not sure how having 8 Charisma is relevant
They are "it's what my character would do" also 8 charisma doesn't trust anybody chaotic monk tjat charges in whenever I try to communicate with them in character
Ideally, you should be working together on strategy. As players, regardless of your character. If everyone is running around doing their own thing, it's not going to go well
You need to communicate above the table as well. Have you brought this issue up to your DM?
If that doesn't bother them and it bothers you, this may not be your group
I brought it up with the whole party
I tried saying, if we went by spacing rules and reach rules then I could position my spells to where they don't affect them.
Your DM is electing to ignore combat rules and grid space?
No, that part they had wrong
Unless everyone has a Reach weapon, they do need to be next to the enemy
Uh, kinda? He changed 5ft squares to 10ft making us all huge and making it really hard for me to visualize spell AOEs.
Of course they did....
And we all occupy one square.... of 10ft...
I would never recommend that anyone run combats in 10 ft squares. Ever
Not collectively. Each one
In all honesty, this game sounds like a mess
Yeah I think he retconned that
Is the DM new as well?
I think he might just be stupid and doesn't care about the game part of the game...
Which is fine. Nothing wrong with that
I love the guy.
It sounds like the discrepancies in play are a source of friction for you, in which case, it's probably not the right table.
If he wants to be a laid back dm, I think that's great for his campaign, but I didn't understand that and I need structure I am VERY autistic
I understand and it seems like their decisions are an erosion of consistency in the rules at that table
So if I want to find a new group of players that fit better here, and possibly online, what channel would I go to?
I would need players and a DM, so looking-for-community?
Using this server, either making your own post in #looking-for-dm or responding to DM’s posts in #looking-for-players
#looking-for-community are for special kinds of community games such as Westmarches
Can someone help me make a character?
Sure
Whatcha need help with specifically?
hey guys

Hey guys
Ngl im a bit nervous, I’ve been trying to find answers for the past 2 weeks to help me understand some specific basics ab the game regarding the reference sheet and I don’t want to reach to ai >_< can someone help?
HELLO
What can I help ya with?
Also hi a bit nervous, I’m Nugget
I’ll be with you in a minute tho
Hi!! Thank u for answering! Ill write them down :3
Hi all
Lmao no worries, i’m writing this at work
So mainly I’m confused about Armor Class, Speed, HP, Hit points, how does one level up, feats, passive wisdom, cantrips and spells in general 😭😭
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC.
?tag new hp
How do you determine the number of the armor class?
10 + dexterity modifier is your base, unarmored, AC
That will depend on the source, but usually either armor or a feature
^ And yeah, when you add armor - for instance leather armor is 12 + dexterity modifer - it replaces your unarmored AC with the armor's AC calculation.
Speed is how far you can move in one turn (aka 6 seconds), HP and hit points are the same thing, you level up either by gaining XP or when the DM Decides, feats are lil buffs you give to your character every four levels in a class, passive perception is 10+perception modifier and represent how perceptive you are without trying, cantrips are spells you can cast without a resource, and spells is a lil more complicated
So do the characters spawn with armors if they like? Or must they encounter loot/buy to get the armor
Characters will have starting equipment usually yes
Outlined with their class
But this armor and equipment usually isn’t the best, so they will likely buy things later
Every class starts off with starting equipment. Some classes are trained (e.g. proficient) in using armor and thus can wear certain classes of armor and benefit from it.
However not all classes are trained to use armor
For example, fighters can wear full plate (heavy armor) while monks aren’t proficient in ANY armor
For this, you have prepared spells and spell slots. Prepared spells is the selection of what spells you can cast, and spell slots is how much you can cast a level of spells.
Cantrips are seperate from this
(You choose them seperate from your prepared spells and can cast them without spell slots)
Any confusion or further questions?
Yall have been a great help
Just one more question
How does one level up
I'm going to link to something about spellcasting I posted earlier (someone else was asking a similar question): #dnd-newcomers message
This will be up to the DM. Usually, either XP based (killing things and achieving objectives) or milestone (the DM decides)
Level ups happen when the DM allows it (e.g. the players gain enough Experience Points (XP) or they reach a certain point in the adventure where the DM decides it make sense (Milestone))
Milestone means you auto gain levels by reaching a checkpoint in your campaign, xp based means you get xp from being a murder hobo against all hostiles
I personally am a fan of milestone
Oh i see!
Thank you all so much 🩷🩷🩷
Anything else?
That’s so much easier than the youtube vids made it out to be
Then you would follow the rules to leveling up: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
Nope that is all thank u <333
If you have any further questions later feel free to ask in here again in the future!
hey can i find a group of players that welcome noobs such as me.

Casting a wider net should help
Many groups are fine with new to D&D players but it helps if you can show that you've put in time and effort to learn on your own as that will make it easier for a group to take you on and not worry they'll have to spend their limited and precious game playing time teaching you everything.
Also note that finding a group is usually harder for minors due to the social/cultural and legal issues surrounding playing with strangers and minors online (if playing online)
Personally didn’t have trouble getting into games as a minor (I just chilled out here and got invited to them idk, I believe I’m the exception)
do you have any dnd groups that accepts newbies
Used to, not anymore
That's actually one of the better ways to approach it - be patient and chill and show you have an appropriate maturity and that you would work well with the group... at that point, age is not a major concern.
thnx guys for advice.
Yeah if you show you’re willing to get along with others and people like being around you, it makes it much easier
Oh i forgot to ask how do death saves work?
Once you drop down to 0, you roll death saves. D20 roll: 10 and above you succeed, less you fail. If you succeed thrice you are stabilised, if you fail thrice you die.
Nat 20, get up with 1 hit point.
Get hit, auto fail one save
Roll a nat 1 though... 2 death saves failed.
and this is why healing spells can be critical
hey guys, im Completely new to dnd, i have put together a party and i have been defacto elected to run our first campaign. im very excited to DM but i basically have no idea where to begin with. can someone point me in the right direction on where i can start?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
And don't forget to get ideas and talk shop with other DMs in #dm-discussion
is there anywhere i can find short beginner campaigns for free online?
Does anyone know any gamemasters that would be cool with having a player under 18? I've tried for so long to find a group but most I meet don't want anyone under 18 : /
?tag ddb claim
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
^ Sapphoe - here's some free stuff you can claim on D&DBeyond including some intro adventures (Intro to Stormwreck Isle)
omg thank you!
You can also check out DMsGuild for free/pay what you want adventures/materials - quality may vary.
got it !
I don't off the top of my head. Best thing to do is ask when looking through game posts here or on other sites/services like Roll20, Demiplane, the D&DBeyond forums, other sites/forums.
Being a minor does make it harder to find a game online with internet strangers due to the cultural/social and legal issues surrounding minors.
Right, thank you! I have some exprience with DnD and Cairn but that was with a group of freinds that sadly don't play anymore
You can also check #looking-for-community - that's other D&D community servers and they may have a variety of D&D games including ones that may be specifically made for minors.
also be sure to check out Peril in Pinebrook by Young Minds Inspired. that adventure right there is one of the shortest and best to teach how to play and run stuff in an adventure.
oh sure! thanks a lot!

Hello everyone! I have a quick little question:
After responding to a request in #looking-for-players, What do I do after? Do I just wait for a response or is there something I should do?
Pretty much just wait for the DM to hopefully respond
There aren't any specific general way to follow, as each post is by an individual DM who might go about things differently
Alright, pretty much what I was thinking then, I was mostly just making sure there wasn't some general framework people tend to go by somewhere that I missed. Thank you!
All savvy. I recommend applying to as many as possible, but also considering the kind of game/table you're looking for. I find that your odds are better when, instead of just saying, "I'm interested," you express your interest through meaningful questions about how the Dungeon Master runs things. It helps them recognize your commitment.
I'll keep that in mind, thanks a lot
I am very new to DND and I don't have a camera. I'm in one campaign but its highly improv and casual, so I'd like to ask if there are any books I have to read or additional videos I need to watch before applying to a game.
Are you familiar with the basic rules?

You know how to make a character? You understand how the dice function?
Yes, I have a coule in DND beyond
Couple*
You can do it without D&D Beyond?
Probably not
I'd recommend giving that a spin before saying "I'm ready," but I'm just one random person on the Internet. Don't take my word as gospel!
The rules themselves have all the info you need: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Thank you so much for helping me
Happy adventuring, and feel free to ask questions as you run into them.
what are those notebookes that poeple keep next to them and write things what are those for?
notes?
like for the session
keep track of quests and NPCs and who needs what done and where x thing can be found
notes, they're there literally for taking notes
We have to purchase the books right
Purchases aren't necessary to play D&D, you can get by on just the free Basic Rules
sometimes people sketch drawings in those notes too. every so often i draw my character to see how bananas he'd look in different situations or with different equipment.
first decide if you want physical books, digital books, or both
Here's the links to everything

the 'Playing the Game' and 'Creating A Character' links point to the 2024 basic rules
I know the basics-
I’m not new I just was asking we have to buy the books
just posting it because I have the links built into that clipboard
the information in those links has everything you need to play
here's the raw link if you'd prefer that https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/
then either use the character creation tools in that post or if you're playing in person, there's a link at the end for printable sheets
Tiefling imo
Whatever species you want to play is best.
I like human. Stack up all the Wisdom skills.
would someone be able to read the backstory of a new character that I am making to see if its session 0 safe for a level 3 starting character?
Try a sentence each for these:
- What's their origin?
- Why did they become an adventurer?
- What do they want?
I have answered all of it, though I think I still may have pigeonholed myself by providing an endgame goal of vengeance but I think I will redo it anyway
well many characters start with one goal and character development has their goals change throughout a campaign. I can't read it but I'm sure you didn't pigeonhole yourself too hard
Hello everyone. Just a small intro from me which also is kind of a question.
I've played Baldurs gate 2 & 3, enjoyed critical role and watched the shows on prime. I'm a huge roleplay person and I have wanted to get in to group-based dnd for awhile. I've been reluctant to do so because I have bad ADHD and tend to lose track quickly, in video games and tabletop. I tried learning Magic the Gathering awhile ago but gave up after so many stacks of effects or whatever lol. I've heard that group-based D&D feels different than the games based in the same universe and that its very story-driven. So I am looking to see where I can slip in to comfortably.
Is it difficult to come across absolutely green begginer friendly DMs/groups/games? Or is it a bit gatekept? I feel bad wanting to jump in to a group because they might have to keep reminding me of actions or rules/scenarios, but I want to play in a more social setting and make some friends. The only issue I am trying to overcome in the swap from relying on video game mechanics to keep everything going and remembered, then transitioning to a very mental-based version.
I also might have anxiety so I might be really overthinking this lmfao. Have I found the right place to start? 🙂
i'm a dm currently starting a campaign for 2-3 groups, do any new people have any questions for me?
To be honest, how story driven a D&D game is depends a lot on the group. Some groups get really into the roleplay, some just want to fight monsters, and there's a whole swath in-between.
So that would largely be a matter of finding the type of group that works for you. I'd say most are at least open to new people, though the more you put in at least some effort to learn the rules on your own, the more it generally helps
No one has all the rules memorized, but your character sheet is there to help you remember what you can do
Okay thanks for the headsup
Hey guys! How you guys doing?
I don't know if I can ask any type of question here or not but, I'm trying to become a "player and game master" at the same time. I've never had any D&D experience and I really want to try it with my friends. I have the beginning of the story, but I don't really understand anything about D&D rules. Would there be a wiki or any quality guide that you guys might know? That can introduce me to the beginnings of the beginnings 'Cause I want to be able to build the game's foundations for my friends and show them how to play it, too.
Theres one shot servers that could be of use if you needed in #looking-for-community , I can dm you a msg for further stuff if youd like

Anyone able to help me with a character background I wrote for my DM? Character is supposed to start from level 3. Send me a dm and I’ll send you a copy.
Hi everyone! New here, kinda new to D&D. I did a few oneshots and 2 on-going campaings.
I'm becoming a big fan, and I'd love to play more, but I can't find a platform where I can play a campaign with my created characters online & free.
Of course, I used many expansion books to create my characters, but most of the platforms require me to buy the mentioned books (that's fine, I just don't have the cash right now).
Does anybody know a place/site (here?) where I could hop into some campaigns (lvl 3 onwards) with more than the standard D&D 5e classes and races?
Thank you in advance! ~
If you own physical copies of the books, sites like Roll20 and D&D Beyond do allow you to enter information manually. Though the latter does require you to create it as homebrew
You could also try to find a DM who doesn't care how you build your character sheet. I used to let people play off paper sheets when I ran over Discord.
Otherwise, if you want to build the character in the online service, your legal option would be to find a DM who happens to own that content in DDB or Roll20 (or some other VTT) and is willing to share for their players.
Love it, thanks for the info!
And where could I find place to do some campaigns with online kind strangers? I just wanna gather some experience.
Can I ask around here? On which channel?
I did IRL! We are playing with a DM who owns them all and lets us play mostly anything, even Eberron stuff lol
#looking-for-players is where people advertise their campaigns on this server
Tysm!!! Bless u
Am I wrong to think that running Tomb of Annihilation as my first D&D experience wasn’t the best idea?
It's not the easiest hardcover, but it's not the hardest either in my opinion
You can start with anything if you're willing to put in the effort
So! I'm taking steps to try and find some local tables that are new player friendly, and it occurs to me that I have no dice for if that were to happen... Does anyone here have any recommendations for good online retailers for dice that I can look into?
Anything I should also consider when shopping for dice that a new player might not even know about? Materials to avoid, whether printed numbers or embossed numbers are better, etc?
Most dice that have good reviews should be ok to use. I recommend just a plastic / resin set to start since they’re cheap and easy to test for imbalances if you suspect one.
I’d avoid metal dice unless you have a dice tray to roll them in so you avoid denting stuff.
Is testing for imbalances as easy as just rolling it multiple times to see if it comes up weighted on one number in particular? Or...?
Close! If you suspect a die made of plastic, resin or any other material less dense than water then you can do a simple water test:
- Fill a glass with water
- Put suspect die in the water
- Flick it around a bit. If it consistently has the same number facing upwards it’s imbalanced. If it’s relatively random it’s fine.
and if the die doesn't float; add salt to the water until it does
Very cool! Thanks for the tip :> never would have thought of that.
Are there any online retailers you guys would recommend for me to buy dice from? With no context or experience, my first bet would be to go to Amazon but I imagine that would be a terrible choice.
https://dnddice.com/ is incredibly solid
Cheers!
Do you know where you might be playing your in-person games? They might be hosted at a local game store, in which case you can buy dice sets directly from them
Hello, somewhat new DnD player here. I’ve done a few campaigns with friends but life happened and now I don’t play as much.
Looking forward to learning more lore about the series and playing a bit more

Haxtec dice, very cheap and amazing quality especially for the price
I highly recommend their hollow metal dragon dice
how do you do the turns with multiple players in battle and when your roaming how does everyone do some thing if that makes sense
In combat, you typically roll for initiative (see explanation here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheOrderofCombat)
Out of combat, it's less strict. If the players are exploring or roleplaying, I'd leave it up to them to suggest what they want to do next. In short: follow the Rhythm of Play (see here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#RhythmofPlay)
A bit of an advanced DMing technique is to occasionally check up on players that haven't done or said anything in a while to make sure they get their time in the spotlight too.
ok
thank you!!!!
im currently pulling an all nighter to finish this campaign story
im so tired

Thank you! ☺️ I'll be re-reading the basic rules first cause it's my first time playing DND I've been curious about this for years
Can we play via discord with text?
Text games (called Play By Post) definitely happen! However, they are also more rare than games run over voice.
If I can get someone to guide me I'd be happy. In this sort of thing reading rules doesn't cut it.
Given how many new folks join the server every day, it's not very likely to get 1-on-1 teaching!
If you have specific questions or get stuck on certain parts of the rules as you're reading, we'll be happy to answer them here, though.
so im very new to the D&D and want to host one-shot campaign with my buddies via discord and powerpoint but its hard to find a map, if anyone has pictures of medieval taverns, camps etc. please send me some! 😭
Have you tried an image search for a battlemap?
check our r/battlemaps, it's a treasure trove for that stuff
Also consider using background art, wallpaper style for areas that aren't going to have fights with tactical combat.
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for finding a DnD group to join? I played it very casually in school at a club a teacher held near the end of my time in school and ever since I’ve wanted to play it but never knew how to find a group

@earnest moat Hi
Hello
You could, but the vast majority of DMs would rather you draw from existing races.
oh ok
and for example if character is undead?
Talk to your DM about it. That might be doable with not many mechanical changes.
no i m just new to this and i m trying to create character
Hey so I'm new to doing all of this and I wanted to play but I don't know how to make a thread let alone apply, im on mobile so that might be why?
By default it’s expected you choose from the official playable options. Your DM may allow homebrew but it’s something that has to get their approval and not recommended for newbies
Have you read the instructions in #find-a-game ?
Yeah I have but I don't know how to make my thing every time I click on the looking for em it takes me to the thread page but idk how to make one
Even when you send the lfg command?
I don't know how to do that
I'm on mobile and I'm pretty new to disc I'm barely on here
As per the instructions you can either click the command link the channel provides or you can type it in any channel you can type in
Type /looking-for right here in the channel - then pick one of the options Discord gives you (pick the dm one if you want to create a post in #looking-for-dm). The bot will give you a form to fill out and submit. Once submitted the bot created the post and attached a thread to it. Use the thread to make updates/corrections or communicate with interested parties.
As for responding to other posts, under each listing will be a thread link where you can respond to the post
You’re best off sticking to the books then.

Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether it’s a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
Would i be able to play the game if i only knew the basics? I can't seem to understand and memorize everything though
Probably! Not every rule applies to every game, and most folks don't have everything memorized. The rules are there for reference as needed.
Do I have to create a character if I only want to play as DM?
You wouldn't be making a player character as a DM, no
But technically all the NPCs are characters you'll be roleplaying and controlling 😉
If you're using a premade module / official adventure you generally don't need to create many NPCs, as they come pre-made
if the DM does want to get involved with the shenanigans, there's the option of having the party hire a sidekick. the party decides any actions the sidekick takes, but the DM voices anything the sidekick says and non- combat stuff.
Reborn!
?
It's a race/species, basically the playable version of an undead
Hello
how do i roll for grappling somoene? in the last session i had i said to my dm that i wanted to pin down a bandit in the ground and he asked me to roll a resistence test but i dont have an idea how, so i just asked for him how to and instead of explaining he just rolled for me ( it was late and we all had to go so its fair not explaining but i still dont know how)
There's certainly no such thing as a resistance check, so I suspect he misremembered the rules.
In order to grapple a creature, you takes the attack action and choose to make an Unarmed Strike (grapple). When you do, the foe has to make a Strength or Dexterity Saving Throw (their choice). The DC number that they need to beat for this roll is [8+your proficiency bonus+your strength modifier] by default.
Where in the 2024 rules is the info about grappling, DOSH? I lost minutes of my life trying to track it down!
Unarmed Strike! It's so rude.
tysm
Weird placement. Thank you!
I should also note:
Grappling someone doesn't involve knocking them to the ground, though. That would be the Unarmed Strike (Shove) option, which is a different option than Grapple.
They make a similar saving throw, and on a failure, you can choose to knock them prone.
Being grappled and prone is really, really bad for your opponents! But it normally requires 2 separate Unarmed Strikes.
since im a monk can i use martial arts to use the apply the two effects in one round?
If you're a Monk, then yes! Any time you make an Unarmed Strike (such as with the bonus action given to you with you Martial Arts feature), you can choose to grapple or shove instead of dealing damage.
Being a monk also means that the DC for grapples and shoves can be using your Strength modifier or your Dexterity modifier.
This makes Monks the premier grappling class.
thanks for your help
I am also new!

Welcome!
HELLO!
so my name is Geoprge (Giorgos i am from Greece) call me Gi kinda new to DnD and might become a DM as well it seems fun!
Take a look at #learn-to-play and the Basic Rules for starters! Feel free to ask any specific questions you have.
Hi! I'm just starting to get into DnD, despite having a DM for a housemate for four years! 😄
thank you for the guidance, i played some sessions before but I mostly seek either new campaigns or DM tips/advice i have a one shot that i want to DM myself
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!
My suggestions are here: #dm-discussion message Otherwise head to #dm-discussion and hang around. Also, search the server for "dm advice" and/or "dm tips" if you haven't already. This topic comes up all the time!
I have a friend that was starting a dnd and wanted to be a Dm so my friend that plays a dnd for a 3 years said that never underestimate a stupidity of a players
what websites do you use for playing online? i know a decent amount of the universe and gameplay but never got into a game
?tag new online
i also have a few characters already made with lore collecting dust lol
If you know how to create a character, that's a good start. But do remember D&D is a social game, so you should be willing to adjust to fit the game presented.
ive noticed it changes a lot lol, got to know dnd from baldurs gate then i saw roll20 on discord and that was when i got hooked on making characters
thx will check it out
Happened to me the same way, but instead of roll20 it was dndbeyond
Hello
Welcome!
helloo
Thanks, I’m new to dnd lol I never thought I’d get into it but my co worker convinced me lol plus games nowadays are all the same in a way and I wanted to try something new so gonna step out my comfort zone lol
Haha I never got the just of dnd but figured F it lol I’ll try it
It's make-believe with rules, in short. There's a lot to learn, but it can be a ton of fun making up stories with people!
Yea but hey I’m weird asf so
we hear and do not judge
We listen and we don’t judge 😂😂
I don't think I've ever had a player who wasn't weird 😛
Hi im new to dnd dose anyone have any reccomendation of the best chrater sheet layout cus the onw im useing right now is so bad
Are you using the official one and don't like it? You can find alternatives on DMsGuild, Etsy, and probably other places besides. Some might entail a cost, though.
yes im useing the officil one but i can affrod to sepend any money on a sheet layout do you konw a good free one
Can't say I do. Sorry!
The official character sheet is usually the best. What issues are you having with it?
im playing a socerrer and it dosent have any spell damge
also by the official one i mean the dnd beyond one
Have you learned a spell that does damage?
Could you share your sheet? It may be useful in determining the issue
i can try

Hello
Oh nice 👌🏽
How are you doing ?
Yoo whats an easy spellcaster to play and is cleric hard?
What you do is you make notes for when to cast what spells. What's good single-target damage, what to throw to hit three targets at once, what to use for mobility or defence. Then all spellcasters are easy.
Clerics are on the easier side imo
probably Warlock
The standard blaster caster warlock is using and buffing eldritch blast most of the time
Hardest full caster? Probably druid?
the only difficulty of warlock is getting used to a style of spellcasting that the rest of the classes don't really use
It also has a lot of customization options, which could be an additional hurdle!
to me, the easiest spellcaster to learn (at least in 2024) is sorcerer. smaller list of spells known, core class abilities are relatively straight forward
You also generally need your dm to make your build more viable by giving you short rests in order to replenish the spell slots
i mean short rests are kinda a baseline regardless but i see your point
the new 2024 feature did ease that difficulty however as now you have a limited ability to replenish them

Hello everyone! I am about to start my 2nd campaign, this time playing as a Wizard. I am a little overwhelmed with the amount of cantrips and spells I will have at my disposal. Is there a fillable pdf that exists just for managing these? Like nothing but cantrip/spell info on the sheet?
I find the ones that I have found so far just dont have enough room for me to put all the info I want for each spell.
Not really - some of the players handbook content is not available for free so outside of creating such a tool for yourself, you'd be limited to only what the free rules/System Reference Documents provide (and thus which can be freely distributed).
Something like this? https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/283486/complete-spell-sheet-5e
If not, ditto Noob's suggestion of whipping up something of your own since you know what you want/need!
That's not bad at all.
Huh that's actually a pretty nice sheet to help organize and understand your spells. Nice resource find!
Thank you. I used an iPad and DnD Beyond my first time I played. This time will hopefully be all analog. I really want to avoid pulling up spell descriptions online to remember the exact mechanics and all that.
If you have access to the spells on DnDBeyond you can even link to the actual spell page in your PDF sheet
Hi I just made my character but I have not played a campaign ever can someone help me with that?
If you're ready to find a group to play with, take a look at some of the D&D game and community postings in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community

what would be the best way to multiclass if you want to be a cleric and something else?
#character-discussion is the better channel for that question!

Check out the LFG posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and see if any work for you. Direct message the game poster (not Monodrone the bot) or use the thread attached to the post to indicate interest. It also helps if you have read through the free basic rules (at least chapter 1 and 2 which cover core game mechanics and how to make a character) as most groups really don't want to spend their limited D&D playing time having to teach someone everything from the ground up. Most folks are happy to help out and answer questions but if you haven't spent some effort trying to learn on your own before joining a group/game...
Appreciate it and will look up those rules now, thank you

Hi
So i want to join a dnd campaign but im not usually free i kind do artifice warlock sorcerer ps kinda new prefer homebrew
Should probably not tinker with homebrew if you're new
Like how you don't jump into a video game with a dozen mods before you started the game
Yeah i understand that thanks like i had a campaign before tho
But only 1 so i think its a mid between new and intermediate?
