what would be an average price of a good dm screen?
Up to about £20 for a regular folded card or board with nice art on one side and useful info on the other, at a glance. If you want to get fancy the sky's the limit.
Thanks! Id definitely need the info more than anything, the quality of the art or card itself matters little to me tbh
Don't be afraid to make your own notes then. You could just write that stuff down on a piece of paper instead of buying something pre-made from the store
If one were interested in putting something together at home, say.
realistically its more rule and combat shit id need than actually remembering npc details and story. i agree with you though, i guess i dont really mind spending the money to be lazy in that particular aspect when everything else is already so overwhelming
Personally, i've never used a DM screen before. I play D&D with my laptop, even when I'm in person, so its quite easy to look up rules in a digital rulebook. If you're opposed to digital you can also just get tabs or bookmarks for your physical rulebook. If you learn where a rule is in the book, rather than trying to memorize exactly what the rules say, it can make your life much easier
Yeah you're probably right. Thanks for the advice
where can i play D&D?

All you need to do is get a group of people together, and start playing. You can do it online, at a library, in a school club, in a game store, at your friend's house, etc
my school doesnt have clubs i think i can only do it online bec i cant take a person from the street to play with me
sooo
yeah i'm here for the people
i wanna join a game what to do now

no idea how to get started but very interested
this server has some "looking for game" channels that you can use to find a game once you've familiarized yourself with the rules and feel like you're ready to start playing. okay so ive read hit points aren't like, a way for character to lose hp, but i didn't quite understand what they are exactly
Hit Points are HP exactly!
I don't understand your question. What do you mean that "hit points aren't a way for a character to lose hp?" Do you know that HP stands for Hit Points?
When you take damage, you reduce your current Hit Points by that amount. Eventually, if you keep getting damaged, you get knocked out.
Did you mean Hit Dice?
i dont know, in the article its says "stop thinking about hit points as the body's ability to take damage. think of them as characters spending points to dodge or block"
Ah, that's about flavoring.
Basically just a resource that when it runs out you fall unconcious; The way it's been described flavor wise, you could describe it as like endruring through the pain, or nearly dodging/deflecting/avoiding blows, or accumulating a bunch of miunor wounds.
You can basically describe what that looks like however you want, but at the end of the day, mechanically, it's just a bar that says how close you are to being taken out of the fight until you either die, stabalize, or get healed
ok ok, thank you
im lowkey looking for pople to play dnd with but ive never been able to actually find a group, anyone know how? or have suggestions
Dyno...
yeah i have noone to play with

Hey question . I bought a beginner set for my family so we can play. Of course Its my role to be a DM. I watched couple guides and stuff, but I’m confused what the story is offering me. Is there anyone here that can help me, someone who is a experienced DM
Are you looking for help with the story of that specific adventure? #1029833015423143957 might be the best place to check.
If you're looking for general help with being a DM, the right spot is #dm-discussion .
I'm new to the server, name's Luna but y'all can call me moon or moonstone
And I'm just gonna say this out right, I'm a bit crazy
Welcome aboard. Are you new to D&D or roleplaying games in general?
I'm a bit all of things, lets just say, I were a dungeon master more then once tbh
Grand! Do check out the #channel-guide to get your bearings and see what interests you.
M'kay, if ya say so :3
I think I just clicked something accidentally and turned something on.. (not rp rn, I'm saying this genuinely)
Is your device on fire? If not, I wouldn't worry.
No but some weird elevator sounding music is now playing from my device, I'm honestly confused
ooh, you might have joined the event stage lobby
that happens >.>
Probably, how do- oh the music stopped
Hello together i‘m new here and just started to dive in the DND world. You can call me Jorden. Atm I‘m planing to play a Wizard Necromancer but even with AI it’s complicated to decide what I will need as I will start mid game of a campaign at lvl 5. Hope someone could lend me a hand.
Good evening jorden
Please do not use AI for rules questions; it can not accurately differentiate between 2014, 2024, older editions, and homebrew rules and is very commonly wrong; It will not help you make a proper, per the rules character and you will end up needing to redo a good chunk of it manually anyway
you can find the free rules here 'Playing the Game' // 'Creating A Character' and can ask any questions you have here without being lied to by a bot
Hello!!! I’m also new here however I have dabbled some in DND but not enough to be considered an expert so still very noobish!!!
Here's the recomended reading then c:
let us know if you have any questions
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Thank you very much for the advice. I will have a look ^^

Good afternoon my friends, this is grim speaking!, I'm new here and I want to play a angel of death, warrior and commander of his own death clan.
Welcome! I think that's going to be pretty unlikely. Player characters start at level 1, and are usually barely stronger than a town guard.
Have you happened to read the Basic Rules yet?
That's more likely to be an end of campaign/epilogue kind of thing.
You could have it be your character's aspiration and reason for adventuring though.
Welcome! I appreciate the enthusiasm, but its important to set reasonable expectations. This could be a goal that your character works towards, but not something you start out with.
If you want to play as an "Angel of Death" then you could consider the Aasimar species. They are half-celestial, and one of their lineage options is the "Fallen" Aasimar, which has skeletal wings, and necrotic powers. But as DOSH has pointed out, your character will start out at level 1 when you first start playing. So its unreasonable for them to be the commander of a "death clan" or any sort of military force. But as you grow stronger over the course of the game, you can work towards that goal
Sure thing 😉
Hi, I wanted to know, is it a thing for non-native English speakers to apply here?
I'm confident enough in my English to understand what I'm being told (I read novels without ever opening a dictionary) but I don't have the same confidence in my accent.
My problem is that tabletop communities where I live seem very inactive, bare from a few remunerated games, making playing in my native language difficult.
I believe folks do occasionally seek games in other languages here, but they aren't as common.
Do you think some people would accept me in an english game?
Hard to say, honestly. You get all kinds in the hobby. Some are open, some aren't.
Got it, I will see if I can gather a few friends irl otherwise I will give it a shot. Thank you.
Got a bot sending a message-less friend invite right now, with this server in common, who should I signal it too?
It's a big server, and the mods are only here to help regulate activity that happens on it. Just ignore it.
alright
If suspicious activity happens outside the server, then you can report it to discord's safety team directly. There's nothing that this server's moderators can do unless it happens in the server

Could anyone recommend a site for char sheets?
D&D Beyond or Roll20
Roll20 > dndbeyond
and it's not close
Does anyone know any good online hand books for a fallout themed campaign new Vegas is the game I’m looking to base it off but anything will do well enough
First shot would probably be the wiki for the game. Are you looking for background material or a rulebook?
Mainly rule book and stuff for enemies and over all setup
I don’t wanna have a broken game
Happened last time I tried
Not exactly on-topic for the D&D Discord. But there is an official Fallout game from Modiphious.
Like this chat or server in general
And I’ll check out that
I see it’s like a pre made game I’ll look around and get smthn together ty for helping
As this server is the official D&D Discord run by Wizards of the Coast, things around here will be official D&D focussed
Could discuss homebrewing things in #homebrew but realistically there's better game systems for running future post-apocalyptic settings then D&D
Uh... I don't have any right off hand
Maybe use Discord's Discover feature to find general TTRPG servers?
That’s what I was trying to do with this one lol I see i definitely misunderstood the server thing
This d&d is it like an online game or smthn ?
U guys r doing here
D&D is a collaborative storytelling Tabletop RPG game and one of the first.
I know that
I mean ur whole server I wasn’t sure if it was an website ? Or u guys just all play
This server is for discussing D&D and this specific channel is for helping folks new to D&D get help getting started with core game rules and mechanics
We don't actually host games here but folks can use our Looking For Game channels to find a group to play D&D with
Right good point I’ll check out ur other channels but I have like one more question
Also we have the useful #channel-guide which can help you find the most appropriate channel for a D&D topic
That’s very handy
Search up the Modiphius Fallout Discord, that'll put you closer to where you want to be.
Alrighty thank u
I think a character who THINKS they are the angel of death would be hilarious.

Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
I read the rules. And made a character I need to know how to join for a game in dnd beyond
For specifically only dnd beyond
Else, read #find-a-game
Hello everyone, im new here, i was just wondering if its normal to have people not talking but just texting in a discord call while playing dnd? Thank you
Less common but yeah no reason you couldn't play DnD gane just through text
More common would be a type of game called Play by Post (PBP), where the game is played asynchronously by people messaging when they have the time
Anybody here have YouTube Premium?
Thats great news, thank u!
Not really newcomer or even dnd related, so you might have better luck in #non-dnd-topics
Fair enough
Hey ive never played dnd before but have some xp rp’ing for fun and rolling for events in a game or two ( WoW mostly ) should i look up s youtube video? Or could someone kinda guide me on how it works, thanks! I shall start my character sheet here soon (:

Hello, I’m new to DND. I don’t know what starter kit to get. I just need something that can help me learn.

Hi , I need to know something. It´s really important to have character art? (Talking about virtual sessions) . Is the third time that i´ve been invited to a D&D campaing but they tell me that i have to pay an artist(Everything is free except that). But i think that is too expensive for my first D&D campaing. It´s necesarry ? or there are tottally free D&D games?
That's a bit surprising, honestly. I haven't heard of any games that require paid character art.
For the most part, character art isn't usually necessary. You can create some visuals for your character for free using popular tools like HeroForge or Picrew.
If that paid character art comes from someone within the D&D group you're trying to join, that sounds a bit scammy.
This is a very common scam
Free game but need to pay for the art is almost always that
I didn´t knew that tools. And... yeah, seems like scams that´s why I ask . In this person words "Our campaings are tottally free you only need to cover the character art"
Ha, then it isn't free and they're trying to pull a fast one.
yeah , jaja
You’re not wrong to question that. Aren’t there plenty of D&D games where character art is completely optional, especially for a first campaign?
whatever works for now. paying an artist isn’t required to play But If you want to support an artist, that’s completely up to you
Not to mention royalty free art and character creators like the ones Dosh Bones called out.
Id imagine youd have to pay for that stuff, unless its part of a paid campaign, idk tho as im new to dnd
If you have to pay for it it's just a roundabout way of saying it's a paid campaign. As has been mentioned, required paid character art is highly unusual unless it's connected to a scam.
If you find you’re getting scams like that on Discord, please report it to Discord. You can also come to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator. We can create a private thread where you can report the user accounts that are participating in these types of scams.
We can then investigate from our end but ultimately it’s best for Discord to deal with the scammers on their platform

Hi
Welcome
How do I access the different channels?
Check the #channel-guide !
Thank you so much
hey uhh why do I keep getting kicked from this server? 🙁
Those are usually scams
The best place to ask would probably be #moderator-support
Only played a handful of games, but I'm LOVING D&D, what an epic game with infinite possibilities. I can't wait to become more experienced and eventually start DMing
That's awesome. Happy to hear it
Hi! What would be the best way to find a game to join? It would be my first time. I was going through the channels but still not sure. Just finished reading the rules and going to make a character next.
Also; any suggestions for a first time character? One that is good to learn on and useful to joining a campaign?
John Baldur the Human Fighter
Your role is to whack an enemy with your sword until they kick the bucket basically, relatively straightforward
Thanks, I appreciate it. I’ll start building on roll20. Any suggestions or advice? Maybe on how to join, what to look for or being useful to a campaign?

hey ive tried looking up ways to play dnd and idk if i should try in person or through dc or smth, theres a social group centre thing near me and idk if they do dnd
I don't think anyone can answer that question but you. Its all about personal preference. I greatly prefer playing in person, but my D&D group lives hours appart, so that isn't feasible. I play online for convinence. But I know some people find it more comfortable, so they do it as a preference. You should play in whatever way works best for you
Hello guys
So my first character is a Dwarf Paladin and I'm using DnD Beyond to make my character sheet
But i am not sure if it's the way it should be
There are like 3 pages of my final character in sheet after I generated the pdf.
I thought that character sheets were only 1 page
Is this normal?
It's normal for the character sheet to be a few pages. The spell page is an entire sheet of paper on its own, for example.
Wow, thanks
Also it's bothering me that i can't see my character's picture in the sheet
I added the picture to my character when I was adding it's info
But in the final pdf sheet there is no picture at all.
I spend at least an hour drawing it 😔
Unfortunately the PDF generation doesn't add the picture, yeah.
If you're printing it out, you can always print the picture separately and add it to the papers.
Alternatively, if you're just sharing the character sheet online, you can share a link to the sheet itself, rather than a PDF, and that will include the picture.
That's still a link to the PDF. If you copy the URL of the actual character in your list (and make sure it's set to public instead of private), then you can share that.
Ohhh 🤯
Cast a wide net. My Looking for Game/Group Guide has a ton of venues to peruse: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms
As for what to look for, that comes down to your preferences. If you're looking for something dramatic, maybe steer clear of games that sound more jokey. If you don't know what you want yet, try to play in a variety of games to better discover what you like and dislike!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/160822285/aB7Qcr
Can anyone tell me if this is good enough for my first character
Also why is my intelligent stat '-1'?
Your int is likely at 8-9, without looking at it
#character-discussion can give you a lot more feedback
You haven't chosen spells or equipped your weapons and armor. I also feel like you're missing skills. (Your class gives you two, and your background should give two others.)
And yeah, #character-discussion is the better spot for conversation in this vein!
Thank You both kind sirs/Mams
Hello ! Quick but stupid question, how would you deal with this situation as a DM ? This is my first adventure and i really don't know how to react to that. Let's say my players managed to get past guards and are now listening behind the door where the villain's arguing with another person, how would you deal with players saying "we keep listening for minutes" ? I mean, i could make other guards arrive behind them, or the villain suddendly hear them and open the door, but let's say that this is not doable, is there a way to avoid playing a two ncp conversation for hours ?
#dm-discussion would be the better spot, but if there's really no way to interrupt that conversation, I would just narrate what they hear. "Over the next [amount of time], you learn about [whatever]. You hear someone moving toward the door."
Sorry i didn't know where to post ! mb !
They're kinda used to always listen behind every door, and i can't find myself to tell them "you don't hear much but goblins talking about what they ate last supper" for example
Hey. Im new here and want to play. How to do that and how to connect with people? Is there a general texting channel for that?

Aye captain
Hey I’m a newcomer and I’m looking to hopefully join a session soon. I’m currently going through the free basic rules, but I’m wondering if I actually NEED to get the players handbook in order to play?
Nope. The PHB gives you more options as a player, but the rules themselves are all available for free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
And those do include some player options, just not as many!
Oh okay, so does the handbook just give you more options in regards the roleplay? Like character options/races etc.
More species, subclasses, feats, backgrounds, spells, maybe more besides.
Oh okay cool, yeah then I can just put that off for now. Thanks for the info!
Hey y’all! I’m sort of new in dnd (played bg3 so many times tho lol). Me and my fiance is joining an event later for a beginner friendly one shot adventure hosted by the public library.
Welcome. Did you have specific questions?
I do have a basic question, do you build your character before joining the game or is it during/part of the game?
It honestly depends. For a one-shot, unless it's explicitly a learn-to-play situation, I would expect you should have your character made prior.
For my long-term games, I want folks to arrive with multiple character concepts rather than "Here is my character." I want them to fit the party and the game.
One other way to look at this - your character is not fully "built" when you start a campaign. They will probably be relatively weak and inexperienced. Your experiences with the campaign will likely shape your character's personality and influence some mechanical choices along the way. Having an outline or idea for a character is a good start. For first-timers, having someone walk you through character sheet creation can help a lot.
I do have a dnd beyond character sheet, but having multiple is definitely a good idea to see what fits the party. And I assume a character isn’t fully built since leveling up is what helps build them more during a game. 🤔 i appreciate it yall!
How does the wizard class work in terms of learning new spells? Do I have to spend 50 gp everytime I need to learn a new one?
You get at least 2 for free each time you level up
Nice
(Sometimes more if you're using 2024 rules). Then you can also spend money and time to learn more via scrolls/other spellbooks etc
What does memorize spell do? For a lvl 5 it seems kinda useless
There are 2 ways Wizards gain their spells:
- From leveling up the class.
- Copying a spell into your spell book which is the method that requires gold
I would assume Memorize spell does whatever the feature says it does? I don't know that one off the top of my head
Oh right I read about that, I can learn as many as I want but I have certain ones prepared
Hot-swap on a short rest. Sometimes the day doesn't continue as you thought it would at the start.
Oh so it’s basically a quick way to change my prepared spells from battle to utility and vice versa?
One spell, but yeah!
Or just swapping for other reasons, like you're dealing with fire immunities and you need some damage that isn't fire-based.
I see
I’m gonna play bladesinger next campaign so I’m tryna figure out wizard since in the previous one I played sorcerer
I even convinced my dm to let me change song of defense to a better version
Hi everyone! I was wondering if there were any other small playable species besides goblins?
Sure are. In the free rules, there's Halfling and Gnome. Human also has the option for small.
hi
also fairy race
Awesome thank you!
Or aasimar, tiefling, changeling, khorovar, shifter, and warforged if we're sticking to 2024. Kobold, genasi, tortle, tabaxi, kenku, and yuan-ti can also be small.
Hey guys! I'm new to DnD and am thinking of starting up a campaign with my friends and I was wondering if anybody had any advice? Due to distance (and money), our campaign will have to be online (preferably on a free website or app) and all of us are somewhat new to DnD. I went to DnD club here and there back in my freshman year so I know how to make a character and some of the technical terms but I have no clue how to DM or how to set anything up
#dm-discussion can likely get you sorted
Awesome, thank you!
hi

Oh ok
im very very new to d&d and im so confised on this whole make a character thing
all of the skills confuse me what do i need to have right in the beginning
When making a character, your starting skills will be dictated by your class and background
The first steps are class, species, and background, everything else will come from those three
Hello 😊
Hi
boo
Dnd beyond has a character maker which allows you to go through step by step and fill out all the boxes to make one
The only things it doesn't realy make obvious is where to put your different ability scores (it depends on what class your playing, if u tell me what you want to be I can give u advice on it)
What did you need help with?
i have no clue what im sopposed to do to get in a game
If you’d like to use this server to find a group to play with the instructions are in #find-a-game
Also if you haven’t already, check out the free Basic Rules linked in #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins. You don’t have to memorize everything, but the more you’re familiar with the easier your transition process into a game.
Of course we’re also here in this channel to help
Games usually take some time and patience to get into.
Then you gotta keep trying until you can get to one, that's pretty much the only way 😛
Cast a wide net. You can check other discord servers, and other websites like reddit or facebook. But also, make sure you have reasonable expectations. D&D is not a "pick up and play right now" type of game. It can take a week or more to set up a group and find a time that works for everyone. Let alone trying to find a group where everyone's interests and expectations are aligned. Don't expect people to respond instantly when you said a reply to their advertisements. They're usually posted far in advanced from when someone actually wants to play
oh ok jee the people here are more welcoming then i thought
ok soooo what can i play on like what game do i go on
Online games will typically use a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) though one isn’t necessary.
At bare minimum some way to have a character sheet, some way to communicate, and some way to roll dice will be needed
uhghghg im geting nowhere
Sorry, I’m not sure what you mean
D&D games typically take some time to organize and start
D&D is a tabletop game, not a video game. All you need is the rule books, dice, character sheets, and a way to communicate with other people. There are tools to make it possible to play online, but there isn't one specific website or platform that you need to use. The most important thing is the ability to communicate. Discord calls or text chats are the most common method for that if you're playing online.
?tag new online
ye but i cant play if i dont have som thin to play on i mean like some type of game
As before, many D&D tables will use some sort of VTT, which are typically online websites or applications.
like umm some type of digital borde
If a table doesn’t use a VTT for whatever reason, at minimum some sort of online communications platform will be needed, like Discord
You can also play just with a paper or digital character sheet, digital or physical dice, a copy of the rules (the free rules can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules), and a way to communicate with the rest of the group playing.
It can be a phone call.
It could be emails
D&D is also not a board game. VTTs are virtual tabletops, they come with the ability to host maps, usually set by the DM
Some DMs don’t even use maps
It can be, in one case, sending snail mail (yes there were D&D games like that back before the internet was widely available).
ok well thanks im just going to googel the stuff for like 5 hours
Hi so not new to D&D but just trying to get back into it👀
D&D is played in the imagination. All you need to do is talk out loud with the other players, and use your imagination to picture the world around you. Virtual Table Tops (VTTs) are the virtual battle maps that many online groups use, but they are entirely optional. A useful tool for making online play easier, but I've played in several groups that don't use them
Basically, you don't need to worry about what platform your DM will use, if any. That's up to the DM. They'll tell you what to use.
In the meantime, what's important for you as a player is to become familiar with how to play the game.
Welcome! When was the last time you played?
Here's something faster then google: #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ty
My first time in years was last night with another discord group😅
That's awesome. Welcome back to the hobby then. Was anything confusing for you that you'd like a refresher on?
A little but it came back pretty easily but I was also using the dndbeyond app while running discord on my laptop😅😂
Nice. There definitely are a lot of tools to make the game easier now
There definitely is I am just looking to get back into it more so just trying to find more people to play with

Hey I was just offered a "seat filler" possision in a paided game. It seems like a really fun campaign but as always I am worried when thing seem too good so I am wondering if this could somehow be a scam?
ok so if i go to looking fore players do i just reply to 1 of the pepole
Cast a wide net. Reply to as many as you find interesting. You don't have to actually commit to anything until you find one that's interested in having you join and fits your preferences. Think of it like applying for a job. You can send your resume out to a bunch of companies before settling on one specific one
do i need a player sheet
tysm
Only if they ask you to make a character before joining. I tend to advice people to make their character after joining, so that you can tailor it to fit the campaign
Are they asking you to pay?
no
Then you're probably fine. I don't want to say anything concrete without knowing all the specifics, but if they're not asking for money then they probably aren't trying to scam you
Paid games are a fairly normal thing, so if you find one that looks fun and its within your finances to afford it, then you can play the game that way. But there's also plenty of free games out there as well. So it just comes down to personal preference
I think there are some paid DMs that offer free viewing seats as a way to help drum up interest in their games as well.
As long as they're not making you pay for anything you didn't specifically ask for, then it's probably not a scam.
But do trust your gut - if something just doesn't feel right, better to follow that hunch.
Hi 👋
I’ve recently come back to D&D after about 7 years absence (only played for about a year back then).
I absolutely love the hobby !
I am really hoping to make a friend or two who wouldn’t mind re-showing me the ropes as I’m now working with high school and college students with behavioural issues etc that absolutely love D&D.
I’m joining in as a player here and there, but I really want to start running my own campaigns/one shots in person and online.

i have an issue i all of a sudden want to make a DnD game but i dont know how please can someone give advice usfull websights or just info for me please
a good way to start is to pick a setting and theme. and set it in a village. start with monster of the week sort of adventures. let the world grow with the players. don't try to make it all at once. takes the load off you and makes the players feel like they are involved with the world.
Could someone explain how to do character sheet in a call
I can give you some pointers, but not a call.
Scroll up to where it says Basic Rules in the links above. Pop that open.
Pick a class, species and background. Let us know what you decide there.
But I has so many questions
Then ask them here. There are no VCs in this server
What's your first question?
Well, I wanna have a character be using magic and a physical weapon, someone said paladin, and the other said be a warlock, and idk
I wanna do like dark magic and stuff
Those are both good options.
Warlock especially, for dark magic themed options
warlock pact of the blade
Oo oki
I reccomend reading the class descriptions. This does seem like a warlock, but there are many more options.
And remember, flavor is free
Not necessarily that subclass, but it's an option.
Any Warlock can use a weapon and cast dark magic.
yeah just pact weapon a greatsword and smash and blast.
Read the rules for that, it states your weapon damage there
more specifically, it's stated in the weapon description
As mentioned above, you'll want to understand how to play the game before you fill out your character sheet. Can't write down what you can do without knowing the rules, right?
In DnD you only have access to the weapons on the weapon list.
I mostly know the rules
As i said before, flavor is free
I want a scythe
It can look a little different, but it has to follow the rules of a weapon that already exists.
You might use the stats of another weapon for that
I'd recommend a Greataxe, Battle Axe, or Glaive for a scythe.
Maybe sickle?-
A scythe, hmmm
Oo ok
Glaive or Halberd imo
I like glaive
Scythe is a thing in dnd btw, just not a weapon
What does "1d10 slashing mean" the website I'm looking at says that
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Ohh
how do i join a campaign
do you know how to play?
I got confused from the 1 before the d10
not really

that's just the amount of dice XD
You should start by reviewing the basic rules then. They are linked in the bot post above
Also, is my damage just that plus my strength score?
By default, yes.
thanks
If you are continuing down the path of Warlock, then there's a feature you can pick that changes that calculation to be more in your favor.
Which we probably shouldn't get into now, although that would be pretty powerful with the idea you're leaning towards
What is armor class
When you take a swing at someone, that's the number to meet or beat for your attack to hit. As a player character more is better.
It's a statistic that determines how hard a creature is to hit in combat.
Thankfully, the Basic Rules explain what it is in detail:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#ArmorClass
is it possible to do a solo campaign
It's possible, but certainly not recommended.
Do I.. start with any?-
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
You do. As a newbie, we recommend starting with the Standard Array as listed above. Take one of each of those numbers and assign them to one of your Abilities.
I did point buy
Oops
same.
Armor is a type of item.
If you're asking which ability increases your Armor Class (AC), then I would once again point you to the Basic Rules, specifically the section that I linked earlier, which tells you the answer.
Dexterity, usually.
Ah, so 0 for me
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC.
it would be 10 as shown above, unless you've got armour, a shield or an unarmoured defence/natural armour.

Cast spells derived from occult knowledge
Warlocks quest for knowledge that lies hidden in the fabric of the multiverse. They often begin their search for magical power by delving into tomes of forbidden lore, dabbling in invocations meant to attract the power of extraplanar beings, or seeking places of power where the influence of these beings can be felt. In no time, each Warlock is drawn into a binding pact with a powerful patron. Drawing on the ancient knowledge of beings such as angels, archfey, demons, devils, hags, and alien entities of the Far Realm, Warlocks piece together arcane secrets to bolster their own power.

?dmtips
Got an adventure?
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero (may be a lil late, just check if there’s any difficult topics not to bring up)
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios. (Assuming you’re not doing a module)
Try to know more than your players
COMMUNICATE
Okay so I’m gonna say the module but i didn’t know about it much I was suggested it by a friend
I’m dming the forest oracle
Which apparently isn’t the greatest lol

Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.

I have another person in my group that plays what is essentially a 7” Dwayne the rock shaped rock. He is moving rock, basically a golem, but race wise is a gnome (unimportant, it’s our first characters)

Can I make a object oc in d&d?
It’s a bit harder to do depending on what you mean by “object”
Like, there are warforged and autognomes in dnd, who are at least partially inorganic
I made a preloaded character
going to be hosting my first dnd as a dm..what things do i need to get for being new and what sites should i use for onlne hosting for maps
tfw I scrolled through all the threads in #looking-for-players and they're all from different timezones
Uh
There's no one answer to that, but roll20 and owlbear rodeo can both work for maps depending on how many features you want
just so i can put down whats in my head so i can get everyone involved
hello! Im kind of new to dnd
Owlbear rodeo is more stripped down but I think both of them have drawing options for maps. Roll20 has a bunch more features as well, but it's largely a matter of preference imo.
I don't run online anymore and was just using discord when I did last, so I can't speak to any recent updates

Hello I'm new to dnd
Hi guys, I’m new to this game. I really wanna play a few games.
Welcome welcome!
Do you know how I can find open DND campaigns? I really wanna play but I don’t know any good sessions.
And I don’t have any friends
That play
You can check out #find-a-game and then click #looking-for-players where you can find DMs looking to host campaigns!
What kind of story are you wanting to take part in?
Really anything I just wanna play the game
So yeah check the looking for players channel, most of the posts come with a summary of the world you will be playing in.
Ok
Have you created a character yet?
Awesome!
I’m a half-orc barbarian that sounded cool
I can’t find any good things so far
I’ll send you a message

Always make several backup characters just in case.
How do you roleplay a character well?
Minus the hex part yes
Warlock slots are rather limited when monoclassing so your spells are usually saved for control spells instead of doing slightly more damage to 1 guy at a time
Start simple. Have a clear motivation and express it in play. Tell the others players what your character's thoughts are without disrupting the flow of the game. Think of your character like an actor you're directing. Don't forget body language!
I Have a quostion If i started playing on a server from peopel from this server should i Have a webcam?
Depends entirely on the game / DM
You don't need one to play, though some groups either require or prefer one
Can someone explain how learning spells as a wizard works to me?
It's kinda confusing. So you can learn spells up to their spell slot cost? How many spells do you learn every level?
A wizard gains two additional spells per level after the first, which must be of a spell level they can cast.
So 4 levels into wizard means 8 spells, and I'm guessing it can't be all 2nd level spells?
And what about cantrips
Wait I think I found a table that explains the spells pretty well
Because you start with 6 at level 1, it'd be 8 level 1 spells and up to 4 level 2 spells?
Close! You don't get access to level 2 spells until you hit Wizard 3. Your first two extra spells you learn must be level 1.
Hi
Oh no I meant 8 level 1 spells and an additional 4 spells up to evel 2 spells at level 4.
My next question then is if I start with artificer 1, that gives me 2 cantrips and 2 level 1 spells, does that mean I still get the initial 6 spells when I put my second level into wizard?
Sorry, I misread - yes, that looks right.
Multiclassing is a whole different thing.
My table wants to start at level 5 and I feel like it's making things more confusing for me
Trying to make a character sheet for this is hard.
I believe this is accurate. In all honesty though, you might be best served with a straight artificer build, but I'm not an expert on multiclassing. #character-discussion would know more.

Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.

Alright gotcha gotcha
Hello i have a question i got an octopus trophy (beaks) from my last session and I was wondering what I could do with that other than arrows or possibly positions anyone got any ideas for a special homebrew wepon/tool/gear?
A piece of armour, a weapon, an accessory, some kind of tool for digging or climbing? #homebrew might have some more ideas.
So umm I got my character sheet thingy what do I do now?
Did you pick a class and so on?
Mhm
Yea I used the one website thingy but idk what to do now and it’s lacking a drawing
artwork is optional
I suck at art….
Again, art is optional for a character sheet
Could also just put something together using a tool like Hero Forge: https://www.heroforge.com/
You could put all your character information on a 3x5 card - a character sheet is used to track what your character can do and important game mechanics information such as Ability Scores, Hit Points, Armor Class, etc.
It doesn't need art
Art is optional
How do I know what my casting ability mod is
I want my character to be a warlock
That will depend on your class. For warlocks, your casting ability will be charisma.
So it's my Charisma mod?
yup
What is a spell point
Ok asking that sounds dumb
Spell Points are an optional way of casting spells. They're an optional rule, not a lot of groups at all play with them. If you're new to the game, I wouldn't worry about them
Do you mean spell slot (if you cast spells, you have spell slots) or the otpional "spell points" rule?
No don't use spell points unless your DM says that's the way they are handling it.
Idk
So as a caster you have spell slots - they are a game mechanic representation your character have the magical power to cast a spell at that spell level using that spell slot (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells).
When you cast a spell at that spell level, you mark off the spell slot - you won't be able to cast a spell again using that slot until you take a rest.
For warlocks, they regain their spell slots on a short rest.
But they also cast their spells at the highest available spell slot they have.
Spellcasting is taxing, so a spellcaster can cast only a limited number of level 1+ spells before resting. Spell slots are the main way a spellcaster’s magical potential is represented. Each spellcasting class gives its members a limited number of spell slots of certain spell levels. For example, a level 3 Wizard has four level 1 spell slots and two level 2 slots.
Also
When you cast a spell, you expend a slot of that spell’s level or higher, effectively “filling” a slot with the spell. Imagine a spell slot is a groove of a certain size—small for a level 1 slot and larger for a higher-level spell. A level 1 spell fits into a slot of any size, but a level 2 spell fits only into a slot that’s at least level 2. So when a level 3 Wizard casts Magic Missile, a level 1 spell, that Wizard spends one of four level 1 slots and has three remaining.
Cantrip spells don't use any spell slots - they are like "always ready to use, doesn't cost magical energy" spells.
So to sum up:
- To cast leveled spells (e.g. a level 1 or higher spell), you usually must have a spell slot available and that spell slot must be at a level high enough to cast that spell (you can't use a level 1 slot to cast wish which is a 9th level spell).
- You regain spell slots after taking an appropriate rest (long rest for all casters, short rest for warlocks).
Please don't post single character posts (even reacts/emojis/stickers) as it's disruptive to chat and considered spam.
What are you, a bot?
No I am a moderator and we send formal reminders and warnings using Dyno, a Discord bot
So you're saying a can't even react?
But yes, single character posts can be moderated as spam as it's disruptive to chat and can be an accessibility issue to our blind/vision impaired users using text to speech tools to try and follow along.
You can add the react right onto the message - not a problem as the context is maintained.
But posting :oobiyay: right after my message doesn't help folks understand what you were trying to communicate.
If you want further clarification, you can ask to speak with a moderator in #moderator-support and we can create a thread to discuss in more detail.
Anyway, back to D&D
I'm pretty sure it did though
It was still a single character post which is again considered spam on our server as it's disruptive and doesn't lend to the actual discussion. If you wish any further clarification on server rules, go to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator and we can create a thread to dissuss things in more detail there - this is getting off topic and we need to get back to D&D.
guys why are people making this game so compilcated and nerdy
Why are you choosing to use such loaded terms? 😉
Kinda true
nice typing
bruh what does that even mean
I ask someone what some things are and someone sent an entire website, and another person just told me the answer
isnt it wizards of the coast who made the rulebook and character sheets for the game
i mean if its an imagination game why would i use a 200 pages book to play
D&D started from a bunch of wargamers in the 70s going "wouldn't it be cool to focus on the leaders/heroes and what they could do individually?" So if you know a bit about how complicated wargames can be with the simulation-based rule design, that can help figure out why there is come complexity to D&D's rules. It's also been around for 50 years now and has gone through multiple editions.
Idk
How
There are other TTRPG game systems that are more rules light
You can ask about them in #non-dnd-topics
D&D is however not the most complex TTRPG system.
Heck, most of the D&D's books are not a huge list of rules, but stuff like information on the setting, list of stuff like magic items and spells you might only need to look for when needed, and player options
You absolutely do not need to memorize 200 pages of only rules 😛

can somebody help me learn artificer
I am completely new to this and would love to learn a bit about what I have to be mindful of/important must know rules before I can even start playing
Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Feel free to ask questions as you review things.
hello everyone
Hiiiiii! 🍻
I think I kinda have some basic knowledge now and please correct me if I made a mistake:
- DM creates a scenario
- character creation (character sheet)
2.5) get into character (roleplaying) - let more experienced players guide me from there, ask LOTS of questions and look up relevant rules based on the situation
Is this “plan” good enough? Please give advice if I made a mistake.
So yeah there's parts to this.
- Dungeon Master sets the scene/scenario, asks players to roleplay their character in that context, determines what rules are in effect and if dice rolls are needed and what kinds of dice rolls, and then decides what the results mean. They also roleplay the enemies and Non-Player Characters in the game. Together with the players, they explore a story together.
- Usually you'll make a character that fits into the Dungeon Master's game setting/campaign/story and works well with the other player's characters.
- Most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as they put in effort beforehand to learn the core game rules and mechanics and show a willingness to learn. But trying to join a game without having spent any effort to learn beforehand may be frustrating for everyone involved as their game time is limited and spending it having to teach someone everything from scratch.
Thank you

I'm so confused, how many spells learned does an artificer start with?
Intelligence modifier+half your artificer level for level 1 is confusing
You round up, so level 1 just counts as 1 iirc
So a level 1 artificer learns 1 spell... that doesn't seem right.
Wait you use your intelligence modifier. So your ability modifier?
That would be your ability mod for artificer, yeah
I have no clue where to start TvT. I have a bunch of friends who like DnD, so I'd like to gain experience before I join their campaign ^^
I'm too, and it'd be awesome if someone helped to get started in this thing :>

Hi...How can I join a campaing with people I dont know... also, here I can talk spanish to or this server is only for english?
This server is English only, but there might be advertised games that are going to be run in Spanish
ok thank you, thanks, I am looking to join in a campaing but I dont know how to, I am new in this, do you know how is called the server in spanish, if there is one?
I know this is really unethical but… I’m new to playing warlocks and I just got phantasmal force added to my spell list (I’m an Archfey patron warlock) could I use that spell to just make a pylon that makes them emits a sound that induces an unreal amount of tinnitus for… shenanigan reasons?
Alternatively, could I use that same spell to, and hear me out, light myself on fire, so the target believes he is being burnt when he’s within melee range of me, taking 2d8 psychic damage because the illusion makes sound, temperature, and other stimuli?
Illusions don't usually create sound unless the spell specifies it can have sound as well.
It does include sound
“The phantasm includes sound, temperature, and other stimuli.”
So yes to both, though there may not be concrete mechanical consequences to the tinnitus
Interesting… thank you very much for the confirmation >:D

Hello.
Howdy. Let us know if ya have any questions
Never made a DnD character before so it's time to attempt.
Strongly advise to look at the Basic Rules linked above first, before firing up D&D Beyond. Class, species, background. Get an idea together.
If you use DND beyond it will walk you thru it nicely
That's the plan, hopefully it is nice.
Hey where would one look for really beginner friendly DND campaigns for two extreme beginners?
Honestly the starter sets are a good place for beginner friendly adventures
The starter wuh?
Ah there have been various starter sets released for dnd fifth edition. I think there are 6 different ones across the 2014 and 2024 versions of 5e
They come with an adventure, mini rulebook, premade charcters, and dice. Some come with even more than that

Hi!
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!

Hello!
HRU
im doing good! is there anything you need?
Let us know if you have any questions
Oof, I'm not able to find a D&D server that'll allow me to start as a Level 1 Character.
I want to play PBP D&D 😭
Maybe try searching outside of servers?
I'm trying
I found few
One was accepting level 5 and above
Other two were accepting level 3 and above
I also found one that accepted level 1 but they were asking me to use a specific website to make my sheets.
I am a total beginner and making sheets in D&D beyond is much easier. Their website was confusing.

How do I check if spell components have gp value for casting with a component pouch or arcane focus? Do I still need non-cost non-consumed materials if I have a component pouch?
Any materials without gold cost is assumed to already be in your pouch and is there just for flavour
And where is the gold cost listed?
Do I have to buy the material beforehand if it has a gold cost or could I just spend gold instead as I cast it?
Hi everyone I’m new to this group and I am hoping to get tips on being a dungeon master
Gold cost is under material components for the spell. You have to buy the component beforehand. If your dm knows what they're doing they'll let you buy some.
So I can't cast a spell with a casting speed of "action" if I also want to cast a "bonus action" speed spell
You can
As long as one of those spells don’t consume a spell slot (by 2024 rules)
So, if I were to use a spell scroll... I could bypass that restriction?
Correct
LOL
Or magic initiate or some class features
Or some species features
But spell scrolls are the ways to cast it at the higher levels
yo wsp im xavier ! im lowkey looking for people to just talk to about dnd cause im new and suck , maybe join a game ?
I played dnd exactly once like five years ago. No idea where to start, but I'd like to do it again because it was neat. Would love someone to info dump me and a group with patience for a new player would be awesome. Would also like to play regularly.

does the PHB physical book let me use it on digital platforms?
Not on dnd beyond, idk for the rest
someone help me idk what to do how can i play?
Check the box above, it goes over the introductory info you'll likely want to know.
Unless you plug in that information from the book yourself, no
which is better? getting the physical book or the digital book?
Depends a lot on your needs! Are you going to play online a lot or are you playing in person?
It also depends on your priorities. If you get it digitally, the upside is that you can access it from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection and as long as the servers are running. If you get it physically, you'll always have it in one place forever.
is there a physical dice counter
im haveing trouble keeping track of adding up rolls such as rolling 2d4 damage
like a camera app that counts physical dice
There’s apps for rolling digital dice. You can also just use a calculator.
Here's a simple one:
https://slyflourish.com/dice/
If you type a dice notation into google (e.g. "1d20" or "3d6") it will also automatically roll.
I'm not aware of a physical dice counter.
im using physical dice
is eldritch knight + warlock repetitive?
it does not have a lot of synergy, if that is what you are asking
Hewo
ill be honest i dont know how to play
The digital one is alot cheaper but dnd beyond frequently goes down for matinance
There's also a deal where u can get both for cheaper than them separately but I wouldn't recommend it

I need some help understanding Oaths.
What is and isn't viable to have an Oath on? Like is "swearing to never brush my teeth" a viable oath?
I jest but I don't see any sort of guidance or a list of traits an Oath should have in the Player's Handbook. Also, does the Oath always have to be religious in some nature? Because the Paladin's Divine Smite draws power from some spiritual entity, or in the case of Oath of the Ancients the Fae somehow bestow you with Divine strength?
I'm trying to wrap my head around the concept particularly for "Oath of Glory". Swearing to conquest to bring honor to your name and become well-reknowned doesnt really lend itself to being bestowed with Divine powers like Lay on Hands and smite right? So I would really like an explanation and some pointers for what can and can't be an oath
so I know the basics..but I have no clue on how to find people to play with..

Hey everybody :3
howdy. let us know if u have questions\
Each subclass includes the tenets for a given oath in the description. If you're looking to figure out what constitutes a viable homebrew oath, you'll probably have to work that out with your DM as I don't think there's any mechanical specifics for what is/isn't a fitting oath.
I may be getting this wrong, but oaths are not necessarily an intermediary between a paladin and divinity. Paladins just believe in a cause so hard that they get power from it.
Hello!
I’m new to DnD so i do need some knowledge on the sorcerer class
?tag new sorcerer
Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.

Hey new group and new dm here. I bought some custom minis already and now am having some trouble figuring out how to set up the maps. Like I could draw it all but that seems like a lot of work for a map I’ll just use once(especially since it’s on a 1 inch grid. I was thinking I could buy some terrain bundles. Idk how much that would cost, don’t know which to buy, don’t know how to handle fog of war. I also saw I could buy a cheap tv for $150 and use that. I just need help.

Hi I have been playing dnd for two months can somebody explain spells
Well the free basic rules have a section specifcially covering spells: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells
Is there a specific question you have?
So you have cantrips, and you have levelled spells. Cantrips are spells you can cast for free with no resource cost. Basically like your selection of basic attacks and a few useful utility spells
Hello I'm new
I'd suggest a simple grid and card templates for terrain. You get some logs and rocks, some corridors and rooms, set them up as you need them. If there's a complicated setup you stick it all down and drop a cloth over it.
Levelled spells are cast with spell slots, which are limited resources, and spell slots have different levels. If you're a Warlock, they're always cast at a specific max level and recover on a short rest. If you're any other casting class, you have a number of slots at each level, and casting a levelled spell uses up a spell slot of the spell's level.
You can also "upcast," casting a spell with a higher level spell slot than its base level. This gives the spell more or stronger effects
Unless you're a warlock, they regenerate on a long rest
Sup yall
Hey now. if you have questions let us know
Ive played dnd for 5 years but ive took a 8 month break and im finally back
Who else here has played dnd for that long
since the red box starter in the 80s but took a long break due to life until 2014 and got back into TTRPGs again (not just D&D)
I have been playin D&D for over 37 years
Ive played pathfinder for 3 years but again 8th month break
Dang really or you just playing
We got some near-the-start original player folks
Also please don't share exact ages folks!
oh i mean yes. forgot cant do the age thing
How is the no of times barb attacks calculated man?
You start with one attack like everyone, and at certain level you gain a feature called Extra Attack, which starts off at one extra attack (so you can make two attacks per Attack action)
I have a barb attacking like 5 times
Like I wanna do that too
I honestly have no idea how they're doing that 🤔
What's their subclass?
I think Totem warrior or berserk not sure
what level is the Barbarian
Max
level 20?
Yes
Yeah no idea where the two attacks out of five are coming from. You get extra attack (2 attacks), and berserker gets an additional attack as a bonus action (which you could also get by two weapon fighting), so that's only 3 attacks I can account for, but at level 20 it could be a magic item or other boon granted by the DM, as at that level all balance starts to go out the window lol
Yeah maybe
You could just ask the player how they're getting the attacks
Is a human with Dragon features (horns and partial scales) still classified as Dragonborn? Looking at most sources most Dragonborns seem to be a humanoid dragon rather than Dragonic Human. Or is it left up to player interpretation? Assuming one was born from the union of a Human and Dragonborn for example
I suspect you could get a fuller breakdown in #dnd-lore, but dragonborn are a separate species rather than an actual hybrid of human/draconic ancestry. Whether you pick human and describe them as more dragonborn or vice versa is up to your table.
Same for what "counts" as dragonborn: in the absence of rules, that's a flavor question for any individual table.
Man I got no one to play dnd with sadly

Hey all, I’ve JUST started playing D&D as a DM I’m pretty sure I screwed up the game with the caves of chaos Map E. Should I have started with cave A? Or the keep in the highlands?
I recommend reposting your question in either https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1417549663875239937 or #dm-discussion.
Both channels are geared closer to answering your question since it's DM/adventure specific and not newbie-specific
Ok. Thanks. I’m still trying to figure out what dice to use and how it impacts the game
By chance does anyone have experience making a spore druid using 2014 rules? Just need a lil help double checking my stats to see if they're correct 😄
Spores is built like any other Druid, what's your current spread like?
Hello guys! I just bought a starter campaign and I’m totally new. I’m confused why it my ac as a rogue sums up to 13 when the armor is 11+ and my dex is +3 wouldn’t that be 14 ac?
This is a pre made character from the kit. I asked ChatGPT and it says that it already does a sum based on recommended but it makes no sense to me
Could be a misprint because if you have leather armor and +3 Dex, then it would be 14.
leather armor is 11+ dex mod no limit so yeah 11+dex (3 then it should be 14)
That’s where your mistake lies - in consulting ChatGPT
Never use ChatGPT for DnD
I didn’t know who to contact as we are all new 😭
Yeah makes sense, I thought I was just missing something thanks!
This server for one, or google, Firefox, ask Jeeves, etc.
Desperation leads us down the darkest paths /j
Drawing from the deck of many things
It seems really hard to keep up on everything as a dm
You'll learn as you play
I read the reference booklet and left with little understanding. I need to re read I guess lol
What are power tokens? Are they just used for specific powers from races or backgrounds, classes etc?
Experience helps the best
IIRC it's used for things like heroic inspiration
Or temporary buffs
It's just used as a marker really
Thanks!
i’m fairly new to d&d, and would like advice on how to play my POTB warlock besides just overusing eldrich blast…
Eldrich blast is going to be the best option a lot of the time
Thats not you failing to be creative or anything silly like that
nice to meet all, really wanna learn how to play!
Keep in mind there's always ✨ flavor ✨! Your eldritch blast doesnt need to be "I cast eldritch blast." It could be spawning a lightning bolt from your hands, it could be sending rocks hurtling at your enemy, it could be a blast of water, as long as the damage is the same, as far as Im aware it can be anything!
Grab a polearm for your pact of the blade and swap between meleeing people and eldritch blasting
Eldritch Blasting is going to do more damage in the end though
ty ❤️
What Warlock subclass did you go for
Pact of the Blade? If you're looking for the best way to make use of melee warlock, then it depends on what book content you have access to. If you have the Player's Handbook or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, there are plenty of really nice options for melee warlock.
Wait till level 3 and grab Hexblade to really go home with pact of the blade

In 2024 they made it so every Warlock subclass can Hexblade to some degree, which is neat.
(And also allows Paladins and Bards to take Pact of the Blade with no dip which is also fun.)
im not to sure how i would start making my character... Could I just write it all on a google doc or use the website
dnd beyond should help
ok, does it save on there?
Yea
Though to be clear you'll have a small handful of options unless you buy more books/share with someone who has them.
is it normal for a monster to have 20,250ft. of movement?
is it a good idea to become a dm first instead of a player
Okay coming off what I tried, I say its better playing first.
When I actually played i was able to get a better feel of DnD and ended up just staying a player because I realised I preferred it more
You can go either way. I'd say starting as a DM is harder, but it's certainly possible. Some people do that and play later, some people never switch from DMing at all.
Hi i am new here. I have question to ask. Where can i ask question about beyond site?
how can i get custom dice in dndbeyond app
I think there is acpack were u buy them
On the store with all the books and stuff there is a few dice sets
Occasionally Dice are also given as a pre-order bonus for upcoming books or as a monthly subscriber bonus.
Also as a subscription perk
Every month, subscribers get a perk - backgrounds, frames, dice

I’ve just made my first character on DnDBeyond character creation tool and it feels like I’m carrying too much stuff from the starting kit. Am I doing this correctly? I’m also asking if the sheet is generally correct as I’m a bit overwhelmed with information. Thanks for your help!
In my opinion I feel like you have a lot of weapons, if you were to go off strictly 5e rules you have 1 too many. At most even when considering classes at most you should be in the range of 1-4 weapons.
Level 1 characters typically don’t have a lot in the beginning.
Sounds fair enough, I’ve cut my weapon choices down to only using 3 for now. Thank you!
Hey, so I’m building a rogue character and I see that I can choose 4 skills. Is there any rules against choosing one twice so instead of picking four you pick three just double up on one. Is there a rule against that?
You can only double your profiency in a skill if you have expertise
Picking the same one twice doesn't actually do anything. You can only add your proficiency to something once.
Rather, Expertise is an entirely different thing than picking a skill to be proficient in.
As a Rogue, you'll pick 4 skill proficiencies, then later you'll pick 2 skills that you're proficient in to apply Expertise to.
Ah! Perfect thank you!
For the personality, traits ideals, bonds, and flaws how many of each am I supposed to choose?
Usually 1 unless it says to pick more
Ok thanks!!
So for my saving throws, do I add my modifiers to those or is this a totally different thing
Yep, your stat mods and proficiency bonus to whatever specific throws your class is proficient in.
Thank you for the info!
Hey if there any DM’s that could give me some tips on how to really make a campaign “good”. That would be much appreciated. I’m making a new campaign for some buddies, and I wanna be able to talk about it. However I’m not wanting to spoil it to them so I came here looking for guidance. 🫠
Or would that be for DM discussion tab?
#dm-discussion is probably the better channel! My sound bite advice is "Ask your players what they want. Add in those things and things you want just because they sound fun to you (for you)."
Thanks, and yea when I’ve talked to them so far about it I’ve been adding their goofy ideas lol.
Hello
So I've come with a question, as two o my friends want to do a campaign but we cant really do it with only 2 in the party and 1 as the dm
So could I ask if someone would like to join our homebrew campaign?
You can post in #looking-for-players by following the instructions in #find-a-game!
Good luck!
So what happens if I use a weapon that my character is not proficient with
you don't get to add your proficiency bonus to the attack rolls
I highy advise you don't do that
Is there any negative effects
The game is balanced around assuming you have that bonus to hit, you will be missing a lot
however, its good to have a melee and a ranged, even if you aren't proficient in one of them.
every class is proficient in simple weapons in 2024, and has options available to them in 2014
please just use a simple weapon, or otherwise one you are proficient in
It means you're less likely to hit your opponent, ultimately.
It also might feel like "it's only 2 less to hit" (assuming level where thats your proficiency bonus), but it's still a solid 10% chance, and consider that a +2 weapon which adds that much to a roll is a Rare magic item
and that's only until level 5, the further into the game you go, the worse off you are until it caps at -6 (30%) at level 17
When you have about a 60% chance to hit at most by default at level 1, you really, really want an extra 10%.
how can i dmg tank when im barbarian, some oponents have so much ac that i have to roll +18 to do anything
Sorry for asking a question I'm sure has been asked a thousand times, how do I find a group to start with? I've messaged 2 and had no reply. I am a new player and looking to get started.
To be honest, keep looking
Finding a group is often the hardest part of playing D&D, so it may take you well more than 2 tries
I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you're asking. Your first question is about you taking damage, and your next statement is about the enemy taking damage.
Finding a group and scheduling are two are the hardest parts of DnD. As the Queen says, you just have to keep trying. It's not uncommon to expect your search to take a few days or even over a week.
At this point I've messaged the only 2 groups that say they are excepting new/rooky players.
Then keep on reaching out. Cast a wide net.
I'll keep looking
I think it's reasonable to say that for every 1 DM actively looking to start a campaign, there's about 200-300 players who are actively looking to join one.
If I had a clue what I'm doing I'd start 1. I fear it would be a painful venture for all involved.
Haha, it's certainly tougher to begin as a DM, but it's not impossible. It's how I started DnD, and how plenty of others did, too. But I understand the desire to take your first steps as a player.
It's the desire to get going and a complete lack of patience
Patience is something worth cultivating, especially in your search
I also started dnd as a DM
treat it like a job search, not like loading into an Amongus lobby. there's going to be some back and forth, and different people are on at different times of day. expect a few days at least before getting a response.
in the meantime, take the time to read through the character creation rules. and rules how to play. and combat rules.
At my age cultivating patience isn't real likely. I'm an old dude and not easily taught new tricks when it comes to things like that.

but D&D isnt a drop-in drop-out kind of game. there's weekly or monthly scheduling. vetting of players. getting them up to speed on the setting and what's been going on in the game. there's times where sessions might be postponed for a month.
there's waiting for other players to do their thing.
Sent you a DM.

question about mage armor spell, it says it makes my base AC 13 + dex modifier, dose that means if i had +1 dex, would it be 14 or 15 because dex adds ac as well right?
With +1 to your dex, your AC with mage armor would be 14 (13 + DEX)
thanks
hey
I wanna start playing dnd but I I don’t have anyone to play with and I only know some of the basics

Can some one tell me how to buy v3cna and the mind flayer dnd not stranger things
Think of spellcasting as a gun that can shoot many different types of ammo (spell slots), and once you run out you can't fire that kind of ammo anymore until you take a long rest
Cantrips are a special kind of ammo that's infinite
AH ok ty
Just wondering if its uncommen for a new player that just wants to use text to find a game
Uncommon, but not unheard of
Well oretty common as a question people ask, but in terms of finding a game where you could do that (besides a PBP / Play By Post -game) it's gonna be harder
The flow of dnd is really slowed down by text
And I've been to a game where only one person was using text while others used voice, and let me tell you that really didn't work out well (:
hey hey, just hopping on to wish everyone a wonderful day. cheers 🖖
I would like to ask, would it be okay if I base a character on an already existing character of mine? (Still completely original, but they already have established lore so it would just be very based on them)
In case this wasn't already answered
Prepared spells are what spells you can cast
Spell slots are how much you can cast any of them
per long rest which is 8 hours of sleep
Unless you’re a warlock, then it’s short rests
it also changes depending on class, warlocks have the abilitt to- HEY YOU STOLE MY LINE
also some classes dont use prepared spells
(Don’t think that’s true in 2024 rules)
i havent bought the book yet
In 2014 though yes
to broke
The Free Basic Rules for 2024 are online
does it include all classes?
Except Artificer
oh ok
so depending on how many spell slots is like
if u had 4 and used all of them you need to do long rest before you get all 4 slots back?
mhm
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
see for. Yourself
some feats and other skills or something allows you to use spells without slots
it's hard to find a game so do you think its a good idea to start with dming?
or af least i think
That’s what I did
i mean itll be more work
It’s harder but if you’re willing to put in the work it’s not too bad
in my mind
oh ok
Just do a premade adventure
They are, but I'm saying prepared as in taking with you
There are classes in 2024 rules that don’t use prepared?
It's a good reason why people recommend playing martial classes for those starting out because spellcasting is a lot to take in
2014, was referring to
i want to do my own kinda
ive watched a few videos on dming
That will be a fair bit more difficult, but if you feel you’re up to the task go ahead. #dm-discussion and. #dm-world-building are quite useful resources too
ty
I mean i do also run cc games(closed community) which is basically dnd but on like way simpler and ran on a actual video game(roblox...)
Known casters, if memory serves
ok it seems like it didnt change
Yup, they're still known casters, but the wording has been changed to "prepared spells" in all cases. Might be a bit confusing if you come from 2014.
eeughhh
but i think we get more evocations or at least earlier access to them
and shifting the pacts of to invocations means i could get the blade at level one
something i dont like is that you dont have as much creativity or combinations with the starting gear
is either a bunch of stuff that probably doesnt fit your character or gold
With the gold you can then buy equipment, which is about as creative as can be
but tbh with 2014 rules i did get like four weapons
But why
whynot
What stops you from buying said weapons with the gold?
Ideally you don't want to ever be changing weapons. Unless you absolutely can't reach the enemy as a melee.
By my count the fighter starting gold alone is enough for 77 daggers
Assuming you buy nothing but daggers
holy crepes
Throwing weapon builds will likely need to go through their weapons
I mean I'm no expert but throwing weapons seem terrible.
Though that’s the exception
i had the idea to use the handaxe as a wood processing axe and the light hammer as well, a hammer
I’ve seen some people have decent success with it
weapons plus lore tools, and roleplay tools
Especially cuz you can smite with throwing weapons in 2024
hihi
hellloooo
Hallo!!
-# mb i got timed out, i have a bad habit of foul language
2024 Paladin: "I throw my knife and smite the enemy"
2014 Paladin: "That's cool bro but he's already dead.."
i've made the most wonderful decision of making a homebrew
-# as a first time DM.
good luck
plus first time doesnt mean bad, just take time to learn
or spend time up at 2 in the morning reading the dm manual
I had tons of thoughts for making a campaign but I haven't been a DM yet.
i just love world building
I'll just write the story and throw it to a DM to populate xD
Ambitious, eh?
or thinking about ways geography and sociology impact eachother
Wish ya luck on it!
same here
I had a dream and adrenaline from a monster ultra red
