And a good chunk of it is included in the basic rules
I recently orderer the DMG, as I want to start as a DM. But i've seen that the phb has pretty crucial info too
I got the starter set dragons of stormwreck isle for my first physical game, and im gonna need to convice my friends to play with me, how should i do so?
Though there's lots of sections I'm bummed they didn't include.
Honestly if you're a DM and you have the basic rules I'd actually suggest DMG over PHB if you can only buy one.
The basic rules are a perfectly serviceable mini players handbook, but the basic dungeon masters rules ommit a lot of good stuff
The free Basic Rules are probably your best place to start reading prior to your books arriving.
I'm reading them right now haha
Are they aware of what DnD is?
Yeah players hand book is like THE D&D book, you can theoretically play the game with nothing but PHB and it has all the important core rules.
So it's hard to not suggest PHB if you're planning to buy books hahs
But it's worth noting that the most important rules are still in the Basic rules
My school friends do, but im thinking of also asking my best friend who i never even seen mention dnd before
But also players hand book has a lot more player options which I think most players will appreciate. I don't think anybody requires the expansion books. But the basic rules probably don't have enough player options to extend past your first few games. A PHB upgrade is required eventually
Friends are very likely to not want to spend money on something like that. But, again, the basic rules are in the website so i don't think i'll even need to tell them anything about the phb unless they ask
If you're playing in person and creating characters together at a session 0 then yeah it should be enough š
I've run a tonne of games with 1 phb
Beautiful
Great place to start is just asking if they've heard of D&D š
Hard to say exactly what is the best way to convince your friends, since we don't know them personally, but you could always have them play the [Interactive Demo](#learn-to-play message) to get an idea of how it works.
I must say, I did enjoy the ID.
You're going to have to pitch them the game so find out what they already know and if they're interested in playing ever.
Are miniatures worth buying
Do you play D&D and want to use miniatures?
Ive never used miniature but they look fun
Then could be worth dipping your toes in
I play D&D but have a bunch of tokens so I don't need minis to run battle maps
Occasionally I'll get my hands on a big monster mini or something I can throw on the map, but the players and little monsters are still tokens
If you're playing online like you mentioned before, minis aren't going to be much help for you. But if you like collecting things for fun, it's a fun hobby
I need a party to play with cuz im new
Check out #looking-for-players and #find-a-game
Hi
Hello everyone! I was wondering if this was the best place to come to as I could really use some help with my character since this is my first time playing D&D.
Iām planning to create a character who mainly attacks from afar or relies on high evasion, so he doesnāt risk taking too much damage. Iād also really like him to be charismatic and good with NPCs / roleplay, someone who can talk his way through situations yet fight as well. Think of the charisma of Johan from Monster.
Narratively, Iām thinking of a fallen noble (open to any suggestions for races). I do want to be useful in combat, but my main goal is to have fun with roleplay and fightsāand ideally to mess a bit with one teammate since we kind of have a friendly ātargetā on each other.
So far Iāve been told Rogue could be a good fit, but Iām very open to other classes, subclasses, or build ideas if you think something would suit this better.
Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Really appreciate all the help! š
Is there something I need to do to unlock the rest of the server?
You should ask in #character-discussion you'll probably get a lot more build advice over there
Nope. Just check out id:customize to pick which channels you want to see.
Thank you
Is it fine to just let Sources all be in default when creating a Character Sheet? (Making one in D&DBeyond)
Character Preferences, I mean. Just had to look back at it. Didn't touch a single setting.
I'm not very familiar with DnD Beyond's exact options layouts myself, but you actually probably just want the default "Core" selected at first.
Whats rhs difference between /looking for a dm and /find a community?
Looking for DM is for a player (or several players) looking for a DM or group to join
Looking for Community is for D&D community servers to advertise their server
I'm terrible at describing this particular distinction, so I'm glad you're typing, Undying
That is a community server may have more than 1 D&D game, offer Westmarch games (no set DM or player group) or other non-traditional D&D game experiences.
They may also be looking for both DMs and players

Thank you
Hello! I just acquired the Heroes of the Borderlands starter pack and I wanted to start playing dnd with my friends as a DM with it. I was just wondering... is there any prefered order on how to run those 3 campaigns? or either one is great to start at?
Question about combat: Can only one of my players engage in combat? Like, idk, the barbarian of the group itches for battle and attacks a bear that was passing by while walking through the forest
Waz Upp! Im mostly new to DnD, and me and my friends play a bit, buuuuuttt, They simplify it alot, but I want full experience. So ya, I know most of the rules and how to play, but Theres still alot I don't know how or what it is. So ya, happy to be here.
Usually when a dangerous situation arises, every character in the area rolls for initiative.
Oh okok
So it doesn't matter if it's just a small goblin that (I assume because I am yet to even play) the barbarian alone can take
everyone jumps into action
Typically, yes. But you as the DM set up the scenarios for your players. You ideally shouldn't be presenting the party with trivially easy threats.
Makes sense
Thanks ^^
Another question
Do player characters always start at the same place? like, already knowing each other?
Or is there a "they find each other eventually" stuff
It's usually recommended, especially as a new DM, to set the scene right at the beginning with all the players in one spot. That way, they don't have to sit around waiting for their character to show up.
As for knowing one another, that's another thing that's up to you and the players. It can be very helpful if the player characters know each other in some capacity, but it's not necessary. All that matters is that every character wants to be on the adventure and complete the quest.
Question about secrets among players. If a player discovers something on their own and want to keep it a secret what do I do? How would that work at all? Does the player who wants to keep the secret even tell me about it? Does it have to be consulted after the session or over a break? I have seen people who appear to include these unexpected stuff, but idk on how i would have to handle it
I know I can give my own twists, but what if a player kinda wants to apport to the story
Im in no way an expert but your players can either
A. act like they didnt hear the secret (It is a role playing game after all) or
B. The player can come to you after the session if said secret is going to last multiple sessions, Another great way (and my recommendation) is to have the player message you privately, that way no one else can see what the secret is yet you as the DM still know!
Hiii
Are you the DM? I'm not sure what secret a player could discover that you yourself would not know about.
Anyone wanna vc!
I am getting a little overwhelmed trying to figure out how to start D&D.
I have never played any TTRPG in my life but it has always been something that interested me.
I really want to get some experience however I don't have any connections and starting with paid games if giving me pause.
I feel like it misses the purpose for which I am seeking this out. My interest in this hobby is that I want to have a social connection and a feeling of belonging with the people that I play with. Paying for that feels disingenuous that could just be a little skeptical but it feels like a shortcut to me.
Any suggestion or thoughts?
I was thinking about option A, but I feel like that would be a bit boring to the narrative
So I think I am going with option B or the extra one
Hence why I recommend the privately messaging
Thanks ^^
As Iamrazorwing points out, the player literally can't do anything that's secret from you, the DM.
Does anyone else just like dnd cause the dice?
Makes sense
That is one of the reasons lol
That's good to know
I didnt read the message properly before lol, I took it more so as a character or personal secret the player may not want to reveal to the others yet mb š
Thx everyone
Math rocks š
NO I JUST LIKE EM CAUSE THE DESIGN
I'm a new dm, what's a good one-shot to start?
Crunchy
Anyone wanna vc?
A lot of new people worry about joining games (whether online, at game stores, at libraries, via clubs, etc.) because they're worried about "getting things wrong" or "holding the table back." So they want to get experience. Paid games are a way to do that, certainly, but not every table requires previous experience. So I guess my sincere question is if you don't join a paid game, are you similarly worried about not having experience? And if you are, how else do you intend to get said experience?
I don't know if we have many good 2024 one-shots yet. (If I'm wrong, someone please correct me!) Plenty for 2014 5e, though.
I think i have the 2014 rules
I usually look online for rough ideas for one-shots then improv from there
Im about to do night of the walkimg dead. Is that good for a new dm and new players?
Ah, cool. Then for intro one-shots, I like The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff.
I can second The Delian Tomb its really fun and good for beginners
"Night of the Walking Dead" is apparently for a different edition of D&D.
I honestly am not too worried about being clueless. Mistakes, flubs, and errors are a good learning tools.
I want to feel like that honestly, I love being surprised by new information and situations.
I have little sense of embarrassment surrounding making mistakes at this stage in my life.
Playing in paid games is kind of the thing I am trying to escape. I have been a videogame player for decades and have decided to stop.
Focusing on TTRPG is meant to be a sources of entertainment and social gathering that I feel has been missing.
Playing via paid games just feels like a sideways move, if you get what I mean.
Sorry it took me so long to respond, just really trying to transcribe what I am thinking accurately.
So then why consider a paid game at all?
Yeah most people here donāt pay
I can't seem to find other avenues thus far.
There are a few game stores around where I live but not sure where to find communities.
Doing searches online primarily turn up pay-to-play options.
Reddit, #looking-for-players , #looking-for-dm , dnd beyond forums and roll20 are free
Not to mention #looking-for-community
The guide in my bio has a ton of venues to peruse.
Does anyone know where I should go if Iām like way new, Iāve played bg3 and have a character sheet but I donāt know anything about the actual game itself or how to start

D&D Beyond is probably a good bet, unless you mean something besides a standard character sheet.
Hello Iām kinda new to D&D
It seems I canāt pick tortle or owling? Sorry if itās a dumb question
Those are paid options. You need to have access to the books with those contents, either by purchasing them yourself or via campaign sharing.
Not everything is locked behind a pay wall though
Have you played on Maps on DnD beyond? Best place to find games using that VTT?
The latest Tortles are in Monsters of the Multiverse
Owlin are in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos

Im new to the game( went through a quarter of a campaign as a DM, and a quarter as a player), I barely learnt anything other than most of the races that I have forgotten I'm still in high school and I play with my classmates sometimes, does anybody have any tips to help me learn more?
Voila
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Tip? Read.
I haven't played a single game of dnd yet but I want to get into it. What stuff do I need to buy for it?
Technically, you don't need to buy anything! The Basic Rules are free and dice can be rolled online using a website or an app.

Guhh Iām stuck to playing online what was your first play through like?
Hi
hey
I am making my first dnd charcter and need help understanding how to set stats.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
I suggest using Standard Array at first
I think it's safe to say 99% of DMs will accept a character made with the Standard Array.
That makes it so much easier, thanks!
DC = Difficulty Challenge, usually used when the DM decides your character needs to use a skill and roll dice to see if your character succeeds/fails at <action> using that skill.
When you make an attack, you roll to hit. That's a dice roll that determines whether you actually land your attack or not.
If you successfully hit, you roll damage, which is how many hit points (HP) the target loses.
The DM sets the DC based on the game context and what your character is trying to do
aha i understand, thx guys
AC = Armor Class
Your character must make an attack roll + modifiers and bonuses that equals or beats the target's armor class to hit.
Hey can i send someone my beginning writing for a one shot im doing for review?
As a DM?

hello all, hope everyone's doing well, I got the server invite via the wiki page, I'm just curious if someone can guide/help/coach me through character creation and whatnot.
I have a character I've been working on for years (out of DnD), and I've started mapping it onto DnD standard so he is playable, and not a headache for the GM.
I am reading the rules and character guides etc (on/off), though I'd be grateful for any and all help. since there are some aspects of my Oc that might not fit in with the DnD, since its homebrewed I think....
Welcome! We can certainly help here. I'd first point you to the free Basic Rules, specifically the step-by-step character creation section first.
Secondly though, I will forewarn you, as I'm sure you're realizing if you're going through the rules: DnD is a game where your character's abilities are granted via options you can pick from. You can homebrew different abilities, but it's highly recommended that new players stick with the default options instead of homebrewing.
yes i did realize that, and overhauled my ocs abilities and etc. if possible, i can share the DnD5e cahracter sheet i filled out? maybe that might help, instead of me asking one thing at a time and etc
Homebrewing is usually only recommended for veteran players, since your DM has to allow homebrew on a case by case basis. As a new player, it's harder to know when homebrew content is balanced or even functional within the rules.
If you don't have a DM yet, trying to pitch a homebrew character will make it much more difficult to find a DM than if you were using the official rules.
Absolutely. You can share the sheet over in #character-discussion via a link if you have it uploaded to a website or built it online on a site like DnD Beyond
oh by home brew i meant oc appearance, weapons (non magical), abit background for rp reasons. the things ive added are basically (Sparta, agoge, knight order, hidden blades) basically, kit bashed al my fave elements from various genre I'm obsessed with....
i'll upload the sheet in the channel, and thank you again
How does armor class work?
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a characterās AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the targetās AC.
i just created an acct on d&d beyond.
What should i do ive never played but I want to badly

Read the free rules (and again check out #learn-to-play)
Focus on the first 2 chapters.
1st chapter covers the core game mechanics and flow of the game
2nd chapter goes over how to create a character step by step
Also I'd recommend looking up youtube videos on character creation for D&D.
I myself find it easier to learn something when it's demonstrated to me, so you might be able to find it easier to learn seeing someone else fill out a sheet
There's a pretty good YT video from WASD20 that goes over filling in a character sheet.

Hello
Hi there
howdy let us know if u have questions
how can I join a campaign?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
check out the instructions in the bot
never mind that kinda looks hard
I'm a player and need other players, a dm and a campaign
son I kinda need like everything š¼
those instructions are easy to follow to get you all of those things.
You increase your chances of actually playing D&D by spending some time getting familiar with the game rules
Feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them
Do games ever get hosted in this server?
Nope, this is a server for discussion, questions, and helping people find groups.
For many reasons (business and legal being big ones) we do not host D&D games on our server but we do have Looking For Game channels to help folks find a D&D game/group/players.
See #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels.
How should someone who has zero expierence with dnd begin
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Okay I've had enough of lurking.
I want to get into this bizarre game world.

Are you asking what they are?
ye
I'm guessing you're using the 2014 Players Handbook then?
Hey Everyone just saying hi, very new to dnd so any advice will be appreciated!
it says something like "What is your character like? How do their Ability Scores, like Wisdom or Charisma, contribute to their personality?"
but idk if I can put whatever I want there

Is there somewhere to play online? Im trying to learn to play so I can DM my own campaign with friends, but I have never played before!
Ah, is there a way to play with randoms online though? Just a one shot campaign? Ive read some artilces and watched critical role but I think Im more of a hands on learner. Im not sure I fully understand damage, perception checks etc.
The links in the bot between your messages is a great guide to that
Thereās a bit too much homework for it to be something where you can drop in with zero scheduling
Thats fair
Hey everyone, Starting my first dnd campaign with a few friends and cousins. A friend of mine offered he has been a DM before so heās taking lead. Beyond pumped. I played wow back in the day and itās kinda giving those vibes so far.
Managed to convince my fiancĆ© to convert our spare into a dnd room. Our party lineup so far Paladin (me), Ranger, Barbarian, Cleric. Anyways. Iām here for a reason. Any tips for a first timer ? Half elf Paladin specific maybe ? Appreciate any and all feedback ! Sorry if Iām in the wrong room !
Probably a great question for #character-discussion
Like most hobbies, the rabbit hole goes plenty deep, but here's my short-ish list of player tips:
- Don't hog the spotlight. Give your fellow players time to shine. Involve them directly if you think they'd be open to it.
- Take an interest in other people's stories and choices; don't tune out when the session focuses on someone else (in combat or not).
- Know how your abilities/features work. On a similar note, don't take forever on your turn.
- Take NOTES.
- Listen to everyone else and try not to interrupt.
- Thank the DM. Seriously, this goes a long way.
- Don't make your fun interfere with anyone else's.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that everyone has a good time.
Heyy! I've been wanting to play dnd for a long time. I tried it one in middle school but haven't played since. I really wanna get back into it but it's so expensive and I have no one to play with. I have my own dice and my character but that's it unfortunately šāļø

Kinda not new, but I had a question.
Go for it. If it belongs elsewhere, folks will say so!
I want to build a flexible story, but it needs an end goal that the players want. How can I do that with a fixed end boss fight?
Or should I make the final bods flexible as well
That's more #dm-discussion, but my short answer is: Don't build a plot, build a situation. FOR EXAMPLE If the party needs some artifact, then they could take any number of routes to reach it, but ultimately it's being guarded by the boss.
Of course, you could be flexible with the boss too. There are plenty of approaches within the hobby.
Okay... I like that.
How do you message in the looking for a DM section
The information is in #find-a-game - the bot commands start with /looking-for
uhh idk how to draw my character
You donāt have to
character art is optional
You could get it reviewed in #character-discussion but also if you feel you have a decent feel for the game mechanics and rules (you don't have to memorize everything don't worry!) you can try and find a group to play with

If I run a single player campaign, won't the player be killed by the bosses?
Potentially unless you as the DM adjust things
Official D&D adventures are typcially balanced around a party of 4 player characters
How can I adjust things?
If you want help balancing things you can check with folks in #dm-discussion - there fellow DMs can give tips and suggestions
Alright thanks a lot
I made a passable character that perplexes the judges.
what's next.
I went to find a game but there's just so many options and the one I joined wants me to create a new character and I'm already burnt out from this one ^^;
never played dnd i have no idea about anything at all š what to do in this server first?
Yeah, oftentimes you'd be making a character specific to the campaign, as oftentimes there may be some limitations the DM might have for it or their world, so while you can make one ahead of time, and doing so is great for practice and you night still be able to use them for some games, often it's safer to have a general idea for the character, and make it fot the campaign
Uh.. hello hello? Is this the right channel? I was wondering if someone could help me get into DND?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once youāre ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. Thereās also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Welcome! We're happy to have you
This is a bit overwhelming but i thank everyone for the help. I've never really been into anything like this until now
If youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Have you ever played a board game? Reading some rules isn't very high bar š
Other great starting points could be YouTube, there's plenty of incredible "what is D&D" videos out there
Also the character builder is a great way to videogame-like make a D&D adventurer like Nugget said
Though I find it tends to do more harm then good because it both makes mistakes, makes you name choices you don't get understand and also is entirely formatted wrong for the current edition š¤
But most new players are using D&D beyond so eh
Does monopoly count? š I'm being as serious as I can be. I love reading but this just feels different. I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking it?
You probably are
Due to the customization it sometimes feels like a more detailed hero shooter/MOBA game minus the shooter stuff
Human characters don't usually have fancy names, right? I suck at names
There's fantasy name generators, I think there's dnd books that give guides
And of course there's always the ol reliable idea of using your own name, names you like or names based on someone you know irl
Alright, now I just feel dumb for not figuring it out sooner
You can name them whatever you like, for the most part
So I got a question, how does long rests work? Like what if I just do a long rest, do I just don't play for a while, and what if my entire party does it, can we just say it and it just happened?
You just rest for a while. Usually itās sleep for most of it, so you can just roleplay your downtime however you wish. You wonāt be doing strenuous activity anyway.
You can say you rest, but itās up to the situation and DM whether or not something interrupts you
I just spent around an hour just writing character lore and I still haven't finished reading the basicsš®āšØ (but the lore is done so that's good). I came here to learn how to make an OC because I wanted to draw them, believe it or not.
I believe it. Granted, I do recommend you know the basics so you have a rough idea what powers your OC can have.
You don't need 1 hour to write character lore lol, follow this guide:
"How much you spend on a backstory is entirely up to you, but for my groups I recommend the following:
Don't write a novel, DMs may not want to read long backstories.
Hit three points:
- What did you do before becoming an adventurer?
- Why did you become an adventurer?
- What do you want to get out of adventuring? (ie: what are your future plans as an adventurer?)
With each point being about 50-70 words long."
A good range for backstory imo is 150-250 words
I just like writing lore. I write as a hobby which is partially why DND was recommended to me. Also.. magic? Lol, I didn't give my character anything but a criminal record(idk why I'm laughing, I'm losing my mind)
Of course, you can have more, but having a version that you can give to your DM and not have them read a thesis is important
Just a heads up, there is usually a limit on how much lore you can give a character, and how much control you have over the world
Why's that exactly? Genuinely I'm as dumb as a rock in terms of dnd
Their lore must also match their level
Can I just send what I have so far so someone can criticize and help?
Because the DM/Host decides the setting of the game
I guess an extreme example would be like, if the campaign is about beating up a vampire in his own home
You can't make a character 5000 years from the future with a laser rifle and that this character has toppled over countless empires
If you like writing lore, you may actually like being the DM seeing they do the brunt of the worldbuilding.
Both of those points make sense. But I'm pretty lazy. DM seems like work
Where and who do I send what I have so far to?
Post here, or if its too long, paste it on pastebin > paste the pastebin link here
hey guys, anyone knows how to make a bladesong characters on dndbeyond or any other platforms?
Dude, I used Google docs to make this. I've never heard of pastebin before. And it's around 1800 characters too long so I can just share it in two parts?
Gotta buy the books
Or find someone in your campaign that can share it
Uhh feel free to post google docs here in that case
I was making a plate of leftovers for tomorrow's lunch and ran into my elder sister. She kept yelling at me to be quiet and I hadn't said a word to her š I almost completely forgot about this conversation and turned my phone off for the night
Yeah, send the summary, and have the rest as info your DM can read and incorporate if they want
Though how did it go from being jailed to being an adventurer again
hey so im kinda new to dnd but ive played a few campaigns and im just wondering if theres any way to play with ppl online!
Would parole be a good excuse? Also, what skillset can I even give this guy? Like, I need ideas. I'm exhausted and ran out of coffee supplies
Sure but you have to make up a reason to ensure your PC won't just escape for good whenever he wants
Perhaps he's been sent on a quest by the mayor of the town in return for his freedom
hello?
Any tips on how to play DND as person with ADHD? I have a lot of trouble following the story in multiple hour sessions. Trying to write down a lot, but it takes out a lot of the dynamics when my character is supposed to do things
I thought of something similar. I was originally gonna add
"Let out on the strict behalf of the kingdom. Forced to work off their sentence as somewhat of a freelance adventurer(an experimental sentence the capitol is testing out). Any refusal or desertion means immediate return to prison. Once the sentence is paid off, they will be a free man once again. And they're never getting this off of their record."
But I like your wording better
Iāll first ask how a kingdom would keep track of an adventurer if theyāre potentially off far away
From reading the backstory I think itās pretty good so far, here are my questions/notes:
- Why did Ymir turn to thievery & scavenging to support his family over a regular job?
- How did Ymirās parents not notice extra valuable inventory in their shop?
- After getting out, the story goes that Ymir realized that he couldnāt survive by being careful, yet it was by not being careful that he got caught in the first place.
- If he wants to survive and prove it without his support system, why did he choose one of the most dangerous careers?
I personally dont have any advice for this but iirc ginnydi made a video on this topic(?) not sure if thatll be helpful but worth checking it out!
Ill search for it, thanks
This is why I needed to come here. Earlier I mentioned I like writing but my friend said I could use some editing practice. I'm not very good at plot holes so I was hoping someone would ask. Thanks.
How the kingdom keeps track of Ymir:
The idea was split honestly. The first idea was they'd hire someone to keep track of his adventures. Someone who'd watch but wouldn't step in and be able to get out of any situation to report back if he dies or disappears during an adventure.
As for the other questions:
His parents actively discouraged outside work. I kinda based this part on myself so it was bound to be somewhat confusing.(he stole because it was the only way he could materially help without defying his family or leaving them on their own. His parents discouraged him from taking dangerous or distant labor, insisting the shop and their faith would be enough.)
The shop already dealt in oddities, selling Items that were inconsistent in value. They had their suspicions of where the stuff came from but feared what the answer is. They were in denial(ok this one doesn't make much sense considering the background but it's just what I think a good excuse would be. The entire origin is still fluid.)
Ymir realized that caution, secrecy, and small crimes could only delay consequences, not prevent them. It's more of choosing risk openly instead of hiding from it. He did everything right by his limited understanding and still messed up(It's a flaw I wanted to give him but I messed up my way of wording it.)
If survival was already uncertain, Ymir decides he would rather face danger on his own terms, where effort and skill could actually change the outcome.
I find it easier to fix errors and take advice when other people are working off of an example I've already shown. Sorry for typing so much
I think your answers bridge the narrative youāre crafting pretty effectively!
Something to think about is what would fulfill Ymirās goal, if anything, and where to go from there if he did prove his independence (objectively or subjectively from his perspective). His goal is fairly general, which i think is really flexible since thereās no defined end.
I like to think of my characterās personality as it relates to their goals, and by extension their reason for adventuring. If say, my character wants to adventure to get rich, why would my character take a profession that has a high chance of killing them compared to say, working my way up in the city elite? Further, what might motivate me to continue adventuring in the event I do? If my character ends up with the opportunity for a safer (and/or more lucrative) way to get rich, would they continue adventuring?
These answers can also help round out your characterās personality. From your answers I think Iām picking up that Ymir is a bit headstrong and bold, both qualities that are conducive to adventuring (and particularly, continue adventuring). The last bit also seems like they place a high value on personal skill, perhaps to the point of being utilitarian.
If Ymir is offered a safe job, a comfortable life, or even quiet wealth, his internal question isnāt āWill I survive with this?ā, itās āWill I stagnate?ā.
Adventuring is dangerous but itās also honest. Success or failure belongs entirely to him, which makes it easier to live with than uncertain stability. I wanna say growing up in a slow, safe house made him think fast and that snowballed into thinking too much? So Ymir is a chronic overthinker and somewhat bold. Things like managing rent, years, and expectations weighs on him far more than immediate danger. Acting in the moment keeps his mind quiet in a way things like safety never do. (Personality-wise, Ymir presents himself as capable and composed, but internally heās anxious, self-critical, and constantly running scenarios in his head.) Adventure gives him something concrete to focus on, problems with clear stakes and clear outcomes.
I had no idea "utilitarian" was a word until now.
Hell, now that I'm thinking about it, I just wanna write random stuff Ymir would get into like some solo novel
I also have no clue what Ymir would even do when his sentence is up?
hey does anyone know how to use roll20 been planning to play with my friends for a very long time
Roll20 has their own support forums/server and I'd suggest asking there or #third-party since Roll20 is a 3rd party service
Yo chat
I made a character with chatgbt can someone check it for me I'm still new
Oh I can't send files
It's just a text file can someone DM me
You can share a link to a reputable file/image hosting service like Google Drive but also we don't allow AI-generated work to be posted here per server rules
Why ?
It's just a character
Read the server rules - we explain our reasoning there (mainly because it's creating content off of others work without citation or support to said creators)
Because AI undermines the creative process and effort people go through to create. I guess using it to help with character creation and explanations is fine, but full on generation isn't the nicest thing to do
You'll likely create a better character by following chapter 2 of the free basic rules which goes over the process step by step
Free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
What ? I didn't steal anyone's work I just showed it my OC that I made myself and the character sheet and I asked it to make a character for me
AI is stealing folks work
That's the point - it's creating stuff based off of others work without payment or permission
So we don't allow it here
But that's not what this channel is for
So let's get back to helping you get started with D&D
If I didn't say it's AI how would you know it's even made by ai ?
What I've been wondering about, can I use my laptop in sessions for note taking? How is that perceived in the community? I've mostly seen people with actual paper, or their phones, a laptop might break immersion but it isn't as clunky as using my phone. Would also allow me to develop tools to look up stuff for my own character as I have terrible memory.
If we saw the output I'm pretty sure we'd identify it pretty quickly due to AI hallucination where it makes crap up
We frequently get people posting characters made by AI and since it's AI they're riddled with mistakes.
Anyway let's stop arguing AI and help you get started with making a character the better way - by following the actual process and rules of the game
Okay can someone see the character and tell me what I should fix and change then can I use it ?
I'm not going to review AI slop thank you. I got better things to do with my time š
I wouldnāt mind it
As a DM
As long as you focus when I tell you to
Yea it'll be only inventory management and stuff like that, being able to quickly look up my spells.
Not looking up any meta data about encounters obviously
Gotta talk to my DMs about it
Good call. Always check with your DM
What works for one DM might not work for another
that's disrespectful dude not the ai slop part but" I have better things to do or whatever" you could just not responded
Yea true, Ill talk to my fellas, thanks for ur view on this
If you haven't put any effort into it, why should someone else?
I'm happy to check any character sheet that you yourself have filled out.
Well now you know my opinion on the quality of what AI produces and you have a clear understanding of the server rules for AI-generated work (not allowed). No disrespect to you.
What ? I was just asking someone to check it out so I can fix it myself
Even if I wanted to, you canāt post it on this server anyway
Server rules prohibit it
I have no problem with AI it's just a tool I don't take it personally
Fine - just don't post what it creates here
it's not a value neutral tool unfortunately
But letās not go there even more in a newcomers chat
Alright, so here's how you can have someone else check your sheet: you can upload it to google drive and create a publicly visible link, then post it here.
AI destroyed my passion for drawing for example, it also constantly threatens my job as a developer. Its a tool that has some deep emotions tied to it and you should just respect people not wanting to review things that were created by/with the help of it
Can I send it in DM? It's just a text file if you don't want just tell me I would understand it's your choice I'm just seeking help
Sure, got nothing better to do
With that being said, I do recommend learning the actual character creation
(Not saying your thing isnāt important, Iām just genuinely bored out of my mind)
the free basic rules in #learn-to-play is a good start. Particularly the Character Creation channel
Also can I find a text DND game? I don't want to use voice chat neither have the mic to do it
#looking-for-community typically offers servers that allow a play by post style westmarch
There are text based games, yeah. Look for the keyword "pbp", which stands for play by post. They're not all that common on here afaik, but the DDBeyond forums have an active community. Though the forums are in maintenance right now.
There are play by post/text D&D games - look for those terms in your game searches
Thx for helping šš»
?tag new pbp
D&DBeyond is currently undergoing maintenance so the DDB embeds may not work correctly while it's down
Ah I forgor
basically some ai creators run other people's creation to train their ai without crediting or anything so using generative ai is not good
i have a lil issue... i need to create a DND character based on me irl and yet i have NO idea where to start... how would i find a mask that fits mine irl?? and wtf even am i?? a bard? a wizard? idfk š
How's temporary hit points work? Does it only increase your max hp or also like give current you additional health? for example Orc adrenaline rush
well yeah but idk what the character choices are like so its hard to compare whats best for me lol
You can think of it as another health bar that must be depleted before your main one can take damage
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighterās mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizardās spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
@left wave press the link above and you should get the info you want
These links don't work right now Nugget, remember? Maintenance
Oh i see! So like if hp is green bar, temp hp is white bar or well in other games term of shield
I'd pick the one that sounds most interesting to you and try it out.
Damn it youāre right
Sort of. One notable rule for temporary hit points is that they don't stack. So you can't get "more" shield if you already have one. You have to choose.
I keep forgetting
Oh? How long temp hp stay btw?
1 turn?
oh ok thanks
Until you long rest, normally
Or until theyāre depleted
Okie
Sometimes it might be shorter, but in that case the ability giving you the temp hp will specify.
Can't stake it is a shame though, like i thought i can just adrenaline rush 2 times and get 2 times modifier worth of temp hp
It's a pretty important limitation, yeah.
Im not 100% sure but i feel like if that worked temp hp stacking would go wild
Considering warlock can pick up an invocation that lets them cast false life at will, yes. Yes it would.
Hiiii
thinks me created a very op character thats under leveld
like raid boss stats
help
Sounds like you might have built your character incorrectly, then. Have you gone through the character section in the free Basic Rules yet?
Nope!
just took a premade lvl 10 artificer and tweaked the stats a lil
That isn't really how this works. If you're going to want to join a game, it's probably best to practice with a level 1 character first and learn how to build it from scratch.
Otherwise I not many if any DMs would allow that character into a game.
ye ik i was just experimenting
:3
Right, you asked for help, so that's my advice.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Charasher_159803164.pdf heres the character sheet
Sadly we can't look at links from DDBeyond right now, because the site is down for maintenance.
wha oh ok lol i was gonna edit my character but guess not
People discussed it earlier in #character-discussion which is why im guessing hes now here to try and fix it
I appreciate that, but that doesn't mean the link works
But as deva suggested, start from level 1 and build up. Not the other way around
No but it gives a taste of the stuff he doesnt yet understand
-all stats 18
-anti matter rifle
-dnd equivelant of a billionare
Having money is nice, but the rules are quite explicit in how much starting gold every class gets, so that should help.
~116k gp would be enough to buy two strongholds
Each character gets a set starting amount of money when the game starts
I think it's linked to your background and if u picked itums or money for your starting invotory
havent read the rules yet
guess i should do that
The short and the sweet of it is that you can write anything you want on your character sheet. But your character doesn't really exist until you're running them in a game with a DM.
You can write "999" in your Dexterity score box, but that's likely going to prevent you from ever playing a game with that sheet.
Not really how NPCs work either, unfortunately
The rules should definitely be your next stop.
Making a NPC is one thing but what's the NPC going to be used for
im thinking of doing my first multi class and i was gonna go sorcerer paladin
does anyone have tips on spells subclasses levels or anything?
Paladin to lvl 6 or 7 then sorcerer the rest
so should i start with paladin?
Yes
ok
Full breakdown probably head over to #character-discussion usually this channel is used as an introduction to dnd rules
Or #optimization depending on how far you wanna go
Good morning, wanted to pop in and say hello, new to these parts
Welcome to the server!
Hello, I just joined the server this morning.
I recieved heroes of borderlands box set for xmas.
My first experience with DND, I ran 4e and 5e when it first came out. A few soulbound sessions.
Played in far less games. Haven't played in a continuing story in many years
Welcome.
Thanks hoping to learn a lot here. Shake off cobwebs and carry my mace and shield all over again.
I have never had a character over level 6. Is that good or bad? I dunno.
Some dm never go for higher levels
I believe all my characters does around then. Dragonkin paladin sacrificed to let the party escape at level 3.
Dwarf fighter at level 6 that was taken down by the big bad in a session I wasn't there for.
Life seems to interfere and then I don't make a new character. So then I turned to Dming. Got a group of 8 players at the beginning of the to level 8 before the party fell apart.
alguien habla espaƱol??
The server is English-only, I'm afraid.
If I were to multiclass a ranger Druid is compatible according to the rules correct?
Technically any multiclass combination is compatible, though many are not very complimentary.
That being said, multiclassing as a new player is very much not recommended. You can ask further questions on the subject in #character-discussion if you'd like.
The new Heroes of the Borderlands set is great and includes a bunch of stuff you can use even past the starter set, like dice and maps.
Are there any DMs, that I could chat with. Iām new and have a bunch of questions before I play with a group
We have the #dm-discussion channel just for that purpose!
Assuming, of course, you intend to be a DM as well.
Starter sets can be useful if you absolutely want to jump in head first, and get a wide variety of tools and resources, but don't feel obligated to purchase something like that if you don't want to. Everything you need to start playing D&D is actually free online. The free version of the Basic Rules contains a bare minimum of character creation options, but it does contain all of the rules for actually playing the game, so you can try it for free before purchasing anything that would give you more options or abilities
Actually Iām just a Player, just have a few questions about play style/overall game play and character creation questions
that goes here or in #character-discussion for character stuff
'Creating A Character' from the free basic rules will also give you and in depth, step by step guide to making a character
and the character builders on dnd beyond and roll20 both come preloaded with the basic rukles and will walk you through the process as well
If you want to ask questions about the basics of how the game is played, what it looks like to play the game, or what different features or options mean, then this is the best place to ask those questions.
If you want advice about how to make your character and what options would be best, then #character-discussion is the best place to ask about that
Ok

If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Is it possible to be a DM and a player? Just curious
In the same game? No. (Though the DM is a player; they just don't control a single PC.)
To be more accurate, it is possible but strongly recommended against.
You could run a DMPC but it's not advisable
Ah alr, thx
My go-to comparison is it'd be like the referee playing on a team.
Ohhh
It would take a lot of effort not to limit the progression too much lile that
That gives me a better picture as to why not, thx
HI GUYS IM A NEW DND FAN
why is it so complicated like im obsessed but im so so lost

i watched a bunch of yt videos of people (mostly smosh) playing it
Then watched a few tutorials on how dnd works then played baldurs gate 3 and now im absoultey obsessed. From what i heard though DMs usually prefer if i show them my character before i make them right?
Your DM will need to approve your character, but it's a good idea to go through the process of creating a character so you know how it works.
oh okay thank you for the help!! Should i also make concept art and stuff for them
If that's fun for you, go ahead!
If you want to.
I could only find one friend to play š idk what to do now i got till sunday
Maybe they have friends or family to invite? Or you could ask your family?
Same but we're both new and cant dm š
playing dnd with my grandma would be so fire
My family have no idea what it is but i have hope my brother girlfriend might know it but that just kinda coping i doubt she knows it ether but she does like theatre and dnd is basically made for theatre kids
I think if Ginny Di can show her parents (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3r586qmlAQ) and her grandmother (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb6CFkAsfmQ) the game, I think anyone can!
that grandmother was a violent fellow, and that's the only part i can remember
as in, violent in-game, not irl
Im sorry but the idea of a nice old grandma losing her mind over dnd and causing bloodshed is really damn funny to me š
You should watch the video š
It's pretty much exactly this
As a brand new player do I need to read ALL of the rules??? There are hundreds of different monsters and rules and its all really overwhelming
No. But being familiar with the rules and how to look things up is good.
How familiar
As in understand the core game mechanics and again, have an idea on how the game runs
If youāre a player, knowing how a character sheet works
What parts of the rules would you say are absolutely necessary? I don't wanna read a bunch of spells and monsters im never gonna use or see
So like I have read the rules and kinda watched some videos but Im still a little lost
Playing the Game (the first section) applies regardless of class.
I also made a character or smth but like some people doesnt even do characters I dont get it
You definitely do not need to read everything. If you are planning to be a player, then you should actually avoid reading the sections for being a DM and the various monster stat blocks.
If you are planning to be a DM, then you only need to look up monsters when you plan to use them. You can go through the full list to get an idea of what exists and how you might use them, but that is absolutely not a requirement
As you go through the rules, don't try to force yourself to memorize everything. There will be 4-5 other players at the table with you to remind you of anything if you forget. Plus, its extremely normal and easy to look things up while you play. Honestly, it can make your life a lot easier if instead of trying to memorize the rules, you focus on trying to learn where everything is within the rules. So its easy to look it up later when you need a reference or reminder

D&D Beyond is not something that you āplay.ā Itās just a set of tools to make it easier to run the game digitally. Itās more akin to a wiki
Thatās not a perfect metaphor, because thereās a lot of differences between D&D Beyond and an actual Wiki for a video game, but my point is that itās less of a platform where you play the game and more of just the rules and other tools that you need to run the game for yourself
Seriously, where do people usually play online?
D&D is played in the imagination. You play the game by talking out loud with other people and imagining what the world around you looks like. So all you really need is a way to communicate with other people. Anything that lets you talk or text with other people will work. Discord voice calls are a popular way to do it
Sometimes programs are used to visualize battlefields or scenes. They're not necessary, but are used to help with that imagining, making sure everyone is on the same page. Your DM will be the one to pick how they utilize this, if at all, so it's not something you (the player) need to worry about.
Interesting, very interesting.. They helped me a lot
Am i able to get into dnd for free i am extremely interested in it but alas im in uni and broke
Yup, you don't need to pay anything to play DnD. The Basic Rules are free, and you can roll dice online or via apps.

Does anyone here use DnD beyond?
I'm sure a majority of us do
Ok I have a question
-# This used to be the official DnD Beyond server!
The #ddb-support channel is the best place to get technical help with their website
Iām not really having a technical problem I just wanna make a genasi and it doesnāt give me a option for that
Genasi aren't part of the free rules.
That's because you need to purchase the book that has the Genasi species option. It's not free.
Oh ok
Which one has the genasi species option?
Monsters of the Multiverse
Ok thank you
Hello!! I was wondering how to create a character using dice to decide stats? Is there a specific way to do it? Iāve used an online character sheet creator thingy, but Iāve never fully understood how it works ;-;
See the Random Generation option above
That said most groups wonāt allow rolled dice unless you roll it in front of them
Unless your DM watches you roll your dice, your results are likely not going to be accepted by a DM. That's why it's usually recommended to use the Standard Array or Point Buy if you haven't found a campaign instead.
How do you mean?
NPCs are their own kettle of fish and generally don't use PC rules at all
Iām having a go at DM later this year, and Iām trying to create a character sheet for a major NPC (Iām not sure if this makes much sense..)
NPCs don't actually use character sheets, they use NPC stat blocks. Building an NPC stat block is an entirely different process.
Ahh, Got it! Are they available on D&D Beyond so I can see how they are set out? Or would you recommend a video tutorial?
There are a few free NPC stat blocks on DnD Beyond, yeah. I don't have any video recommendations myself, but you might be better off asking in #dm-discussion , since it's a pretty DM specific topic.
Thank you so much :)
In the DND Players Handbook (2024), Wizards have a Illusionist subclass, for some reason when selecting the core rules in DND Beyond I can not choose Illusionist though, the only subclass it offers is Evoker. Why is that?
Do you own or have access to the PHB through D&D Beyond? The Evoker is the only wizard subclass available with the free rules.
Sounds like you don't have the digital book
Oh so I'd have to own the PHB in D&D Beyond? damn
Or have it shared with you.
I appreciate the answer but I wont buy a digital version of a book that I own physically
Any other good character creators you could recommend?
Takes way too long on paper
Any digital platform is going to have the same options as that's the only free content. Anything else would be piracy.
ugh guess I'll have to build my own tool, thanks though
You can also use D&D Beyondās homebrew creator to recreate any content that you own physically
That might be an option, but it seems as being just as much effort as going the paper route, nonetheless, good to know!
Iād argue the homebrew takes longer on beyond than in paper lol
Potentially. It depends on what you're trying to recreate. But sometimes that's worth the extra effort if your table uses D&D beyond integration for other things such as Maps or Encounters. But that's up to you to decide
Yea we mostly avoid D&D Beyond due to it's commercialised nature, but the character creator is really helpful. We draw the maps ourselves on vinyl mats. I guess the other D&D Beyond features are really good for online play
Hello everyone! I have a few questions regarding character alignment, I understand a character alignment can change, but how often can it change? Can it go from any to any? Do I need to follow certain rules? like I can't go from chaotic evil to lawful good in a go or something. Is it decided by the player or by the DM?
There aren't really mechanical rules for alignment, so it'd be up to the DM (and ideally the table as a whole).
Is it based on a specific decision by player, by event of arbitrarily decided?
The player decides on their alignment.
But that's on character creation right? does that also work mid-campaign?
No need to reply directly to someone in the conversation, thanks.
Assuming your table uses alignment (I've never been at one that does), you decide it upon character creation. Whether it can change or not (and when/why/how) is something that will have to be discussed at whatever table you find yourself at!
Got it. Thanks for the answers
It is not as hard as you think.
Wasn't really about the difficulty but the effort
I have to spend my time pretty efficiently throughout the day, that's why I prefer quick creations
I played my first game of Dungeons and Dragons and had two main confusions with the game:
We played 60% exploration 40% "roll for initiative"
-
During the 60% exploration when we investigated the town, we spent a good 45 minutes in a bank examining and theorizing about a statue. This made no sense. Our party just wanted to get an item out of the bank. Why this wasn't an instantaneous 15minute thing instead of debating for so long about something that most games would just fade-to-black and poof into your inventory ?
-
During the "roll for initiative" section. It was as if nobody had any control over their character. Like it would be seen as rude to not attack the big bad creature as that indirectly kills your allies. So everyone just unloads their strongest combo on repeat on the target again and again as anything else would probably indirectly harm allies ?
These are my main two observations and wonder if there are games or systems that fix these ?
(1) Players spending so long debating and investigating something that should probably happen instantly.
(2) During "Roll for initative" it is rude not to spam your strongest combo on repeat as you indirectly kill allies
If you roll to seduce or convince or do something dumb to the hydra for fun -- you are wasting a turn and letting it damage your party members again -- should a cleric be given an option to just "decide to do nothing" or a bard doing something dumb, etc. Because it is indirectly killing party members; but the only other option then is to spam the strongest combo on repeat.
- Because sometimes there is fun to be had in roleplaying your groups characters discussing things and hashing things out as the character (not you as the player). And some people enjoy the exploration and puzzle aspects that D&D games can provide.
- Generally you play as your character - sometimes it may be appropriate for your character to use something that might damage your allies but generally no, you want to protect your allies while damaging the enemy. So this one is a matter of expectations. Spamming the same attack is fine - you're using what tools your character has.
With point (2) the issue is that we had no other choice but to do that. We lost control essentially
Doing anything else would have been rude / indirectly damaging allies
If I decide to make my Bard sing at the hydra for fun; that is an extra turn of damage for the hydra.
So it is rude not to always use the same strongest combo
Doing anything other than the strongest combo each turn on the big bad enemy would be indirectly harming allies as they are given extra turns of damage from it
You as the player chose what actions your character makes - and you could convince the DM that your bard singing at the hydra could work as a distraction to give your ally advantage on their next attack. But again this sounds like something you'd need to discuss with the group you're playing with.
any campaigns for begginners?
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
See #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels
ok
It's off-topic to solicit/organize games outside of the LFG channels BTW
Why do some groups find it fun to investigate an item or every item in a location for an hour or two when it didn't amount to anything ?
Like if we need to retrieve a free sword from the bank vault; in most "video games" even, it would be in less than a minute, the item just "poofs" into the inventory. Or like there wouldn't be any debate over what happens to an object -- you sort of just interact with it and instantly a reaction happens ?
I don't understand when we spend 45minutes in the exploration part of the game interacting and debating how to interact / theorize about one item -- that the DM told them has no narrative significances
Is there any keyword to avoid this type of ? It was fine, but I feel I would get bored if that's most of the mystery / exploration phase
Because they do? It's like asking why some folks like vanilla and others like chocolate. Many folks like the collaborative storytelling and roleplaying aspects of D&D. Its' not a video game. You make choices for your character and the DM works out what that means in the game context as far as consequences.
If you don't like that aspect of the game look for more heavily combat focussed games or things like "dungeoncrawls"
Anyway I need to dip for now but there are games that are less RP focussed and more about "fighting enemies most of the time"
I want a game where Roll for Initiative section allows for creativity and not spamming the same optimal combo. Dumb stuff like singing to the hydra, or attacking the ocean. etc.
And if there is exploration-- the DM won't try to make some incentive to continue theorizing about an object and just say "that item is not relevant to the campaign" or something.
Like where you would interact with objects, but you would get a visceral result, not getting some sort of debate over it. or theory
The investigating every object thing does matter to me -- because it causes each session only to have like 3 or 4 scenes unless it drags for 5-6 hours. And I just don't have that much time.
Like I want one that's very concise and we don't theorize for an hour about the significance of a set of armor in the back of a shop for 45minutes
higher scenes per session. Shorter scenes per session / no "long scenes each session" type
Honestly D&D might not be the game for you - and thatās okay. There are plenty of other games out there and some might be a better fit for the kind of gameplay youāre looking for. You might post this in #non-dnd-topics and ask folks for game suggestions that better fit your ideal ttrpg vision.
Look at the context - I was not replying to you or right after one of your posts.
It was not directed at you
Dnd has Swarmkeeper Rangers I think you're fine
Hello, fresh blood that wants to get started with DnD here!
Gasp, new sacrifice!
Jk
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once youāre ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. Thereās also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Hiii, tomorrow I have my first play or game. Can someone give me some advice?
Sorry if u dont understand me, English is my second language
Just be kind and respectful, and learn what your character can do
You might also consider looking into something like conventions or organized play if you can't find another system that you like. Those generally have time limits so players and DMs tend to be better about staying focused on whatever the specific mission is. Though whether a combat has alternate solutions very much depends on the adventure.
Hey yall,
Im relatively new to DND, I've only really played once (I've played twice on other campaigns that were canceled after first session)
My first time playing, i chose artificer.
Now knowing artificer isnt exactly... well-liked across tables (not even an option in some), im tryna open my horizons to new classes and gameplay styles. Could someone help?
Bard, more specifically college of lore. You canāt fail at anything and you can get fireball early on.
Hmm that seems a bit... boring
For more options with firepower, warlock
Not as many skill bonuses but has unique traits
What about non-magic classes? Im intruiged on that
Iād recommend Dragonwarden from Ranger subclass
You get a pet lizard that grows with u
I generally avoid martial only classes so I might not be the best person to ask
It is. Some people meme it for being simple but it has excellent and diverse subclasses
One of my favorites is Echo Knight
You can create up to two copies of yourself
You basically get free meat shields, scout and bonus attacks
That sounds pretty good
Lemme do some quick research about fighter
Thanks, btw
Np
A solid choice itās another meta top pick class
Ahhh screw it im a sheeple ill take it
ok so im tryna make a character but i dont see a race option anywhere adn the races for my upcoiming campain are limited
In 2024 they've been renamed to Species and they are part of your background
Check the background chapter - chapter 4
ngl still confused
Where are you making your character?
roll20
Pick a class, pick a background, pick a species/race and you have the core parts of a character. See chapter 2 of the free basic rules as it walks through the process of creating a character step by step.
Free rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/
Pretty sure Roll20 also has it
i think i got it thanks
how do you calculate the spell attack bonus
Spell attack bonus:
Spell attack modifier = your spellcasting ability modifier + your Proficiency Bonus
From https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells#AttackRolls
Whats the most beginner friendly class
Barbarian fighter and rogue
I picked thaumaturge for my new cleric character and im wondering if resistance is a good choice for my 1 extra cantrip
Do you have guidance cuz you should grab guidance
Resistance is great, but note that it requires concentration!
Concentration is usually a hot commodity for support clerics, so if you're going to be using concentration level 1 & 2 spells and channel divinity effects in every battle you may find you never get a chance to bust out resistance.
But if you've got nothing else to concentrate on it's a great little cantrip and nobody ever says no to a D4 reduction
whats the spell save dc for
It determines how hard it is for the victim to make a saving throw against the caster
So my group is starting a long running adventure soonish. We only played one shots so far and I've been playing fighter and monk. For the long running adventure I was thinking about going wizard with the illusionist subclass as it sounds extremely fun. Anything one should be aware of for this?
I mean I know about spell slots and all that stuff, just want to try a less combat oriented class for once
One thing: the effectiveness of illusioner varies depending on how creative you are, and how cooperative the DM is
Yea i figured, I am pretty good at making stuff up/reactive gameplay I would say
Maybe I'll make the DM kill my character off if I dont like it and change to another one at some point
Well, letās do an example:
You are chased by mysterious armed assassins down a corridor. What do you do?
I am procrastinating at work rn, not in the headspace
-# canāt say fireball
Gotta read the spells too
Fair. Welp, good luck! On work and procrastination
First idea was trying to create some kinda fake wall but I start with minor illusion and that doesnt seem minor to me
Actually gotta read the spells first
Fake wall, and illusion of myself turning back.
Lightning bolt would be better. Given the scenario the assassins would basically be in a line, and lightning bolt's AoE would be more suited to the scenario than fireball
At least 40 000 people judging by the member list š
Haha šš
Anyone online
?
What is your question, other than anyone being online? š
Little help understanding dnd ?
I have some questions
Sure, let's hear them.
Mhm
Are minies and maps necessary
No
To play dnd ?
Not required, no.
What is necessary to play first session ?
Imagination
Many tables use the "theatre of the mind" and sort of squish on things like exact distances for range and the like.
Iāve played for 2 years and havenāt bought a single mini. And the only map Iāve had is printed battle maps
You, yourself and you
And either some piece of tech or dice
Ok
And preferably a character sheet
Yeah I heard that somewhere
Helpful are the rulebooks (not necessary though), a pen, paper, maybe the character sheet
You need a bit more than imagination to play D&D. You can review the free rules, they're on D&D Beyond.
All of the "you roll these dice to determine your results on those things" stuff and some basic "how to get started" content is in the Free Rules.
And my 2nd question is do I get the essential kit or the welcome to hellfire club
But there are some nuance-y "inside D&D baseball* things that you run into. For instance? It's harder to schedule a game of D&D than it is to play or run it, heh.
Oh so true. We get together like every 3-4 months š
I would direct you to D&D Essentials; I think it's a better entry to the game without third party IP and Netflx-y-ness, heh.
I would agree on that
Strange that you'd ask a question you'd already answered then. š But I get it, for sure.
And my third question is like how do you create your own campaign
warning: your third question is one of the third rails of D&D
Itās better to ask someone that knows better than you
Not in that it's a bad question to ask, but man.. each campaign is unique.
I donāt get it
You create a setting, you grab some players, and you play.
Thatās the grossly oversimplified version
I mean to say like if I wanna create my own campaign what things i need to keep in mind and what should I do as a dm
First, you should start very, very small.
Play 1-2 premade one shots so you get a feel for how to play, you'll have a much easier time to create your own campaign after
Ok overly simplified but nice š
The best DMs in the world that you've probably watched in Actual Play VODs do this.
Okkkk as you say boss
You have, let's say, a place your players are already familiar with that they meet up. You have small notes about what's around it, a simple story hook, and start with rolling dice, heh.
Also, if you plan on DMing, while you can absolutely direct the players into a certain direction, dont force them into doing what you want as that takes the fun out of DnD
Maybe they all work together or were captured by the same pirates togeher -- or heck, they're already pirates or bandits together -- or they are on the city watch, or work in a tavern, etc.
Thatās the thing I donāt have friends or people that would take interest in dnd
Ah, so.
Unless I play like Eddie Munson
Welcome to the internet. It is full of wonders and other humans that may be interested.
But we don't look for groups here in these channels.
Yeah I am planning on dming
I am not looking
For groups now
I know, it's fine. š
I see, so from a fellow newcomer, let the players have autonomy and guide them rather than command them
I am just curious to learn so I donāt shit myself during my first session
My friend, your pants will be enshittened during your first session. š
And that is 100% okay (note: please change them if actual pooping happens)
My man š
Additionally, try to keep the group together, splitting the party can become difficult to handle
Do you have any acting or writing or performance experience?
None necessary, but trying to frame how to explain how much prep is helpful and what crosses over the line to wasteful.
Bro I gotta tell you youāve got some humour
I have some kind of something. š
Well I watch films and write scripts so yeah I got a decent imagination
EXCELLENT. Okay, that's a fair enough starting point.
Finally getting somewhere
Your D&D scenes shouldn't be scripted, but there should be like, guideposts or let's say guidelines.
Like a rough structure
Yes; outlines, but you are not writing the player's dialogue or making their decisions.
Yeah yeah ik that
Do you have a favorite IP or fantasy universe that you are basically trying to tell a story in?
"It's like Naruto, but with Mecha!"
I watch a lot of movies so yeah
I would figure
Nothing wrong with that.
I feel something like stranger thingy
Cuz thatās how I got introduced to dnd
While describing a new scene focus on the important things, when interacted with, that move the story forward. This way you can guide some things without making the party feel like you're forcing them into a fixed direction
Like make them feel like having a choice without them having a choice
Nah make them have a choice
To be fair, sometimes you will need to yank them by their player character horns and tell them to do a thing or not do a thing. Within some reason.
Absolutely, comes with experience I guess š
True
@somber anvil how do I fill character sheet
But like, you can't be like "hey this is S3/E4 of the show, so we gotta have donuts and steal horses" or wahtever.
Have you use D&D Beyond before?
Yeah yeah has to have some originality
Like I have read about some story where the final boss slipped on a bar of soap early on in the campaign and broke his neck (without the party knowing this was the final boss)
No not yet.
Paper character sheets are low key scary.
Well I watched a tutorial and got to know a thing or two
It's a lot of pen-and-paper for people with phones that don't own pens.
KK but how do you determine like stength points dexterity etc
But the tutorials are generally good; Critical Role has some older content about the 'how' of D&D
You, as the DM, get to choose how they determine it!
How do I know what they determine it
You can do something called a "points buy" where your players get 'n' points and stats cost whatever to upgrade from 8.
This is in character creation under the free rules.
Simplify pls
You can also have them roll, while supervised, 4 six sided dice, drop the lowest, six times.
Still didnāt get it š¢
Or you can hand your players "here are six stats, place them as you choose" and do something like 16/14/14/12/10/8.
Dustin Henderson šš
Like a rouge has better dexterity and stealth
So I take 16,14
@strange kite I believe you will better interpret how stats are created by reading those rules as written.
BUT that said
Okkkkk
I don't know to play dnd
Me too
Here's a go at it:
Six stats: str/dex/con/int/wis/cha
These 'stats' can give you bonuses or penalties (or no modifier at all) to d20 'tests.'
š
Oh ok
Friends, you learn by doing not by reading. š
So I roll a 20 + modifiers
Yes!
Us
So if I am a Rogue making that Stealth check?
So you do roll 20 + stealth modifier
Let's say my Dex is +3 and because I have chosen "stealth" as a skill as a rogue, I add my bonus for being proficient with stealth.
If I am a first level character, that proficiency bonus is +2
Ok we are getting somewhere
So assuming the situation favors the Rogue such that he can make a stealth check, they would roll (1d20 + 3 + 2)
!roll 1d20+5
if you are using Avrae.
So you would add dex and stealth both ?
What is avrae ?
You would always add the Dexterity modifier and you would only add the bonus for Steatlh if that character is proficient or trained in that skill.
Got it boss
Meh ignore the avrae reference but it is a Discord bot that allows for rolls with commands in chat. Many bots can do all that, etc.
As you say cap
I mean captain
lol yes, I know. sorry.
okay, so stealth... but what if your character or player is trying to walk across a narrow fence, stealthily?
They roll a dex or stealth check
The d20 + dex + stealth if proficient
Is there any 'cover' for someone to hide as they walk across the fence? Did they have to climb to get there?
D&D has some things within its rules that try and simulate or represent stuff that happens when people are trying to do things.
Ok
Howdy
Wahzzup
There is no wrong way to play the game, but there are a lot of ways people play the game.
For instance, I wouldn't allow one of my players to roll for stealth if they are trying to walk across a fence just out in the open. I would challenge the player(s) to give me some creative thought about how they cross that fence stealthily, given the details I've given them about the environment.
Does that make sense @strange kite?
Canāt stealth with no cover/concealment (usually), after all
I know I went from like, here's how you add stuff to make checks to three dimensional movement and stuff like "cover" or "concealment"
Yeah I does
@somber anvil I was gone lil bro called
Trying to stealth with heavy metal armor also turned into pretty fun scenarios in our one shots
Knight trying to parkour
Real fun š¤©
Gonna oil my armor up
Diddy got out real fast
Could it work on Chain mail? š
Oiling it up or stealth (I can not answer either of these questions)
I am unaware about all the Diddy stuff so I dont understand the references, also not a DnD topic. I am wondering about putting stuff onto your armor for certain scenarios though
Guess its for the DM to decide
Yeah it is super necessary to oil up your armorš
Huh did I say that anywhere
Nah I did š„ŗ

Ok then another thing I am making my character on DND beyond and i want to ask how many spells can I add like I added four and know 10 is that ok or should I make it less or what
The classes that use spells usually have a table on how many slots the spell book has at which level and how many spells you can have prepared at a time
Not sure if DND Beyond scales it automatically
K thanks
It does scale it automatically
With the exception of wizard, since that one has no upper limit on known spells. So there you need to refer to what the class rules say.
Oh sorry I didn't say I am a wizard my bad
Alright, then here you go:
The book contains the level 1+ spells you know. It starts with six level 1 Wizard spells of your choice.
This is at level 1
Ok thanks I will continue to make it six spells and continue creating my character now
There is no vc here
There's no vc here, but we can help with questions about your character in this channel.
its my overpower raid boss stats underlvled character from yesterday tryna balance it out.
If you follow the character creation rules, there isn't a need to balance. Have you looked at the step by step for how this works?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
i just took a pre made lvl 10 artificer maxed out the stats and made it hella rich
I'm aware, you said so yesterday. This isn't according to the rules I linked.
should i just make a character from scratch?
It's probably best
might need a guide..
I linked the guide
But if something is unclear there, I'm happy to answer questions.
I would too if I didnāt need to sleep. Wishing you luck anyway.
so uh should i delete the artificer then?
No need to delete anything, unless you're running out of DDBeyond character space. I'd just make a new one.
Is blood Hunter good?
I can't say, as I've never tried it. It's homebrew, so I wouldn't recommend choosing it.
oh alr what class would you recommend for beginners
Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue
Any that looks cool to you, though simpler classes can be helpful
(whats the diffrence between 2024 core rules and 2014 rules)
At the end of the day though, a class you like and are invested in will be more fun and easy enough to learn
Anyway folks, good night
The 2024 rules are a slight upgrade to the 2014 ones. Most of the stuff is compatible, but if you choose one, I'd stick to the rules of that one.
2014 rules that have recieved newer versions in 2024 are marked as "legacy" on ddbeyond.
Which one to choose will depend on what the DM of the game you join says. For making a practice character though, I recommend 2024.
gonna go as bard for the shits and giggles
No class is too complicated for a bigger to learn, but if you specifically want something thatās simple, the general rule of thumb is that the more magic a class has, the more complicated it is. Druid, Wizard, and Artificer are typically regarded as the most complex classes
alr
yo uh what starting equipment do i get bard or sage?
Check the bard and sage sections in the basic rules. They list it right there
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Charasher_159880608.pdf this is what i came up with @hearty escarp how is it?
Looks pretty good, but some things are a bit off:
- Your character still has way too much money. Check the bard and your chosen background entry in the rules to find out how much gold you have to start with.
- You should select some bard spells to prepare. At level 1, you can have 4 level 1 spells prepared. You can see that on the bard table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#BardFeatures
As a bard, Charisma is your most important ability, so you could consider switching around your bonuses to have it be 16 instead of 15.
How does it work? Dnd beyond is pretty confusing. Also im seeing all these cleric guides saying to choose a domain but how do I do that?
Domain = your Cleric subclass
It'll come when you reach a certain level
Concentration spells are spells that may last for more than 1 turn and require you to well, concentrate
You can only concentrate on one spell at a time (trying to use a new concentration spell will auto break the concentration of your current spell)
Taking damage or being affected by certain debuffs can also prematurely break concentration which causes the spell to end, how easily concentration is broken is based on your constitution save (which is based on your constitution score)
Can you do other stuff while concentrating btw? I've only seen it in videogames but being able to do things while concentrating doesnt seem like someone is concentrating if u know what I mean
You can do whatever you want while concentrating
Just that trying to concentrate on a new spell will cause the old concentration spell to end
Interesting
Weird choice of vocabulary given that concentrating on a thing implies not being able to multi task
For example Entangle is a level 1 spell that needs concentration, if you try to cast Spike Growth (a level 2 concentration spell), Entangle will immediately end and be replaced with Spike Growth and vice versa
hey guys if i wanted to make like a swashbuckler monkey how would i do that on dndbeyond website cause i dont see like custom species on there
Custom Lineage requires the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything sourcebook
To add onto this, its why you probably shouldn't pack too many concentration spells at once cuz chances are you can't use most of them after concentrating on a spell
No worries, my characters never made it past 2 spell slots anyway
anyone know?
Sublime answered regarding this
And if you meant to select a Hadozee, they're in Spelljammer: Adventures in space.
You can also check the homebrew section on DDB for fitting species, but that requires the agreement of the DM you're going to be playing with.
For the most part, players don't have the option to play as normal animals or beasts. It's certainly not recommended to homebrew for new players, either.
Welcome
If you have any questions about how to play D&D, feel free to ask them here. We are more than happy to help
Hey sorry guys @fallen surge @dire phoenix
I was stuck in something
And yeah I have some
Doubts about the game
What can we help you with?
I have doubt about proficiency bonus
Like when roll a d20 and you add the modifier
Then you also add the proficiency
?
@fallen surge
you add your proficiency bonus only when you're proficient in the skill/weapon/tool/check
So you add both modifier and proficiency bonus if you are skilled ?
for example, a level 1 character with 16 dex would have a +3 stealth roll if not proficient in stealth
if they are proficient they'd have a +5 because they would add their +2 profiociency bonus
and if they have expertise, they'd have a +7 because expertise doubles the proficiency bonus for that skill
and modifier will that be added too ?
modifier is added by default to your d20 tests, yes
Okk got it
Yes.
For example, Persuasion and Deception are two skills that both use Charisma
If your level 1 character has +3 Charisma, then both of these skills would get +3 to any checks you make
But if you are proficient in Persuasion, then you'd actually add +5 instead of +3 because your Proficiency Bonus is +2
And combat I have doubt in combat too
Okk got it bro š
combat works the same
you get your modifier to attack and damage
then, if you are proficient, you add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll only
And how do turns work in combat ?
you might just want to reread the information in the Playing the Game portion of the free rules
I read it but I donāt get it
in combat, you each take turns depending on the inititive roll you do at the start of combat which determines which order you go in
on your turn, you can move, take an action, and a bonus action
attacking is an action, and depending on your class, you may have special abilities that you can use as a bonus action
Can you be more specific with your question? This is extremely vague, and we can't type out the entire explanation for how combat works. Is there something in particular that confuses you?
So you roll it and then add the initiative bonus ?
Movement,attack,bonus action
initiative is generally just your Dexterity modifier unless you have something special that says you get to add your proficiency bonus (the most common being the 'Alert' origin feat)
your proficiency bonus is used for your attack rolls (when you're trying to hit something), only if profiicent in the weapon you are using
Okk
@patent cipher can you explain bonus action and how to use it
so you can only use a bonus action if you have a spell or ability that says it requires a bonus action to use
And how do I know that ?
Canāt weapons with the light modifier also be used as a bonus action?
the description for the spell or ability will tell you
On the character sheet ?
yes, but that is explained in the rules for the light propery on the weapon
It will say on the casting time. It will say 1 bonus action instead of one action
so using the light propery as an example
Light. When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn. That extra attack must be made with a different Light weapon, and you don't add your ability modifier to the extra attack's damage unless that modifier is negative. For example, you can attack with a Shortsword in one hand and a Dagger in the other using the Attack action and a Bonus Action, but you don't add your Strength or Dexterity modifier to the damage roll of the Bonus Action unless that modifier is negative.
Casting time ? What is that
How much time it takes to cast a spell. A good majority of spells take 1 action to cast, but some can be used as a bonus action or a reaction
a spell will tell you how long it takes to cast that spell, the information is on a part of the spell listed as the casting time
this is generally an action, bonus action, or sometimes a reaction you can take outside of your turn when something very specific happens
hi! hope i don't interrupt anything. I'm looking for someone to help me understand the game as a whole. I played in a group for about 2 months but I had a pretty good dm that guided us and this was a along time so i've forgot most of how to play. Basically I want to be able to understand the game to a point that I can find a group to play with and not be completely lost lol. anyways if anyone has the time or likes the game sm that they're down to help me out lmk!!
Raja are you sure youāve read the basic rules? Youāre missing some very fundamental information about how the game works. We can answer your questions but we canāt explain everything to you. You do need to read through the rules for yourself
And how to attack I just roll or do I have to add some modifier in it too ?
Pick a target and make an attack roll, if it hits you make a damage roll
Well I did but I donāt get much from it
Thatās why I am asking help from you guys
we really don't have the capacity to like 1 on 1 tutor people here sadly. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. otherwise I recommend reading the first two chapters of the free basic rules very closely and perhaps looking up videos online of gameplay or rules explainers
okok will do thx
to attack a creature within range;
- roll a d20
- then add the ability modifier for the weapon (usually strength or dexterity)
- if you are proficient with the weapon, you add your proficiency bonus
- if it is a magic weapon, it may add between 1~3 additional points to your attack roll
finally, if the number you rolled + the modifiers is the same or higher as your targets Armor Class, you hit and get to roll damage
you should almost never be using a weapon you are not proficient in, because the game expects you to have that proficency bonus to be able to hit things
And will I be proficient when I create a character or I have to do something to be proficient
Each class has its own proficiencies
Ello everyone, i'm very new to d&d and played it once with my highschool english teacher a few years back. I don't have alot of knowledge if any on the game that I remember but i remember having so much fun. I'm really looking forward to getting back into it. Hope you guys will be able to help me out if i have any questions!
your class tells you what you are proficient in
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Okkk I am getting somewhere
