If you are unable to view the maps provided in the adventure then it seems you are having an issue with DDB. As stated, before, the channel to do so is #ddb-support
I was thinking fighter/ranger
That’s not the worst combination 😅 /j
When deciding to multiclass, it’s important to consider the following factors:
- Which classes (You’ve already figured this out)
- What are the required stats?
- What level will the adventure run to?
- What will be the level split?
- When will I take levels in each class?
- What mechanical synergies am I looking to get?
- What higher level features am I giving up to do this multiclass, and are they worth it for the features I gain instead?
Out of all of these, the mechanical synergy is the most important aspect to consider. Most of the time a monoclass will be more powerful than a multiclass, so you really want to hone in on what will be good exchange. In any event, it’s strongly recommended to save multiclassing until after level 5, when all classes get their “first” big power boost (Extra Attack, 3rd-level spells)
do I need to get lvl up with this discord group to be able to submit a looking for players/dm request?
There aren’t any user requirements to making a post, outside of the guidelines/instructions posted in #find-a-game .
The only limit for new users I’m aware of is that you have to wait 30 mins to post links in this server.
and if I'm a player, I would be looking for a DM, right. Or do I need to use the looking for player?
You can do both, and it’s recommended to do so. Making a post in #looking-for-dm and responding to DM’s posts in #looking-for-players will increase your chances of getting into a game over using only one method.
Nice thanks for the explination and strat
Understandable I only ask cuz I was thinking about making a character inspired by Geralt from The Witcher
Wsp guys how we doin
For newbies specifically, my advice for browsing #looking-for-players is threefold:
- If a game doesn’t explicitly advertise itself as newbie friendly, it’s always worth it to ask
- Try to find a game that uses as little homebrew (custom content) as possible. Exceptions for a homebrew setting since that’s usually narrative only.
- Don’t worry too much about a listing that takes place in another time zone as you so long as you can meet the schedule. For example, if I am available 6-8 PM PST (UTC-8), I could also make 9-11 PM EST (UTC-6) games.
Good! How are you?
Good thanks😄
I’d recommend going pure Ranger then to start out.
I just got here so uh what should I do first? I've kinda been wanting to try dnd for a while so I just decided that this should be a good place to start
Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules and feel free to ask questions!

do you use spells like shield after the enemy has attacked and can you use it even after a failed saving throw
The Shield spell is used after an enemy attacks you but cannot be used against a failed saving throw. The trigger condition for a reaction will be listed in the reaction’s description.
In the shield spell’s case, it lists the trigger condition for the spell in the spell description:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2619019-shield
“which you take when you are hit by an attack roll or targeted by the Magic Missle spell”
I'm a bit nervous to ask, but does anyone have a more easy digestible guide for everything? Or am I allowed to ask if someone may help me with figuring things out? I don't wanna sound stupid and make a fool of myself, I just do not understand most written instructions... :,3
What guides have you been reading? And yes, we encourage asking questions
I assume the Free Basic Rules
I've read (I think) the official book... I've watched some videos, but most are too fast paced and I end up just being more confused... And the school I go to has a club for it, but the teacher explained it only in 50 minutes and didn't really pay attention to my questions...
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
How much of that do you know right now?
Well, my teacher showed off the basics like character making, but the I think stats he didn't explain in full, nor did he really touch on the inventory things
The most I have a grasp on is classes
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Good start
So do you know what stat generation method you’re using?
Also, do you know what class and rule version you’re using?
I actually have no clue, but my orc is a rogue and I do not know more than that haha :,3
Then no. Strength is not a great idea
Rogues scale off dexterity, not strength
Ohhhh
I did give him stealth and investigation as his 'core rogue traits', is that ok?
I will now adjust his stat so it matches his class more
I think rogues get those starting profs yeah
?tag new rogue
Rogue
Launch deadly Sneak Attacks while avoiding harm through stealth
Rogues rely on cunning, stealth, and their foes’ vulnerabilities to get the upper hand in any situation. They have a knack for finding the solution to just about any problem. A few even learn magical tricks to supplement their other abilities. Many Rogues focus on stealth and deception, while others refine skills that help them in a dungeon environment, such as climbing, finding and disarming traps, and opening locks.

Hey y’all, I was wondering if any of y’all could help me with like making a character? I’ve looked online with character sheets but I don’t know what like anything means. Me and my friends wanna play it but we don’t exactly know like anything to do and we don’t have a DM who could help us
I know exactly what I want but I don’t have the specific like words for what they mean
Welcome! Have you checked out the Basic Rules yet? The first section covers the foundational rules of the game while the second section covers character creation
hi
Howdy
Hello everyone, been curious to try actual D&D after getting taste of it via some irl friends hosting it. Hoping to learn the ropes first and foremost.
My only experience was joining mid campaign on a friend groups session (Played as a mind-controlled Goblin or smth for a Warlock buddy of mine, died immediately on 1st turn).
Don't think I'd ever have the brains nor creativity to use the full capacity of any other classes and I think Fighter is the simplest one to play out of any of the classes.
Think I can just try Fighter and go from there?
Fighters not half bad
Any of the pure martials are fairly simple, but fighter is the simplest
A good first character class
Have you decided on their species?
Hey everyone! I just have a few questions and would love if anyone would be willing to answer them, i am very new to dnd and have only had one session with me and two friends in our basement. None of us have played except our dm jayden who is in a dnd club at school. Im playing a human fighter while my other friend is playing a dwarf sorcerer with a draconic bloodline. And my 1st questions are basically about how my build should go. If more details are needed i can send my character sheet. And my second question is how i can be a better player or a be more creative with my actions.
.......Human
Noice
Remember, a character is only as boring as you make them. Human fighters are simple, but that doesn’t mean they’re boring
I'm too new to ever try to get creative. I was given a chance to play Goblin, I don't even remember what class it was. I just went, "Gumbo, smack" and I got eviscerated by archers or smth.
Was a good laugh though.
Your character sheet would be nice
Alright i’ll send it
Being new doesn’t mean you can’t try and be creative
For example, how did your character learn how to use their weapon? What weapon do they use? Why did they learn it?
How do i view the character sheet in its whole? Im using dnd beyond and i can only see individual stats where you switch to different categories
Noted
If you use a laptop you see everything, else get the pdf
Oh damn, is it okay if i send it in multiple screenshots? I don’t have a laptop
First of all, no image perms
Second of all…
Are you using the app or the website?
If the website, just send the link in the search bar
If not, press Manage and go to “Shareable Link”
Have you read the character creation rules btw
Ohhh okay yeah that makes sense
Still trying to read through the entire "Common Terms New D&D Players Should Know" from the Learn-To-Play.
Makes sense
I recommend reading the Playing the Game and Character Creation chapters of the Free Basic Rules when you’re free with that
I can’t find the right thing so can i just send it to you as a pdf?
I can’t do it here because it says attachments aren’t allowed
That works
Hello 👋
i want to do something abit simple i kinda want to keep it grounded what and i am new but still want to try to make my own character
i have a base idea of what character i might play at first i want to try a monk but then i want more of a heavy character which is better barbarian, paladin or fighter
Define “heavy”
hmmm i want to play as a mongol brute something out of ghost of tsushima abit fat or muscular depends on how you interept it wielding a long axe and a heavy shield
i can send you a dm of what i actually want lol
Yeah any of the three can work there
Guys
There’s local games stores or libraries
Online there’s reddit, lfg (#find-a-game channels in the server, roll20, and dnd beyond forums
Can someone direct me to where I can play
I have dnd beyond but I don’t have a join code
Goodness, there sure is a whole slew of reading.
Indeed
Sounds like a goliath fighter to me.
The interactive adventure thing already kicked my ass, can't wait for my ass to get kicked live in an actualgame.
Guess I'll just learn as I go, reading can only let me learn so much before I need actual live experience.
also does fire lances exist in dnd they are basically 1 time use blunderbusses on spears made by ancient china
Not really, but it's easy enough to pick up a spell that does it.
Burning Hands would seem to fit. Grab the magic initiate feat.
new to dnd magic system is it mana base or ?
You get a number of slots to cast spells with. A slot has to be equal or higher than the spell level and is used when a spell is cast.
In the case of magic initiate, you'd get one shot of burning hands per long rest, so basically once a day.
Hi guys. I trying to get into DnD so I joined this server. Can anyone help me?
Start by reading the basic rules and making a character!
Start by picking a class
Don't care about complexity, just build whatever class interests you!
Ok thank you
I have a question. Do I have to have an enemy or I can have no enemies?
Your DM (Dungeon Master) supplies the challenges (enemies, puzzles, problems, etc.) that you and your party will have to overcome as part of the adventure
I am creating my character in the DnD beyond website and it is showing me an option to write who my enemy or enemies is/are?
You can fill that in as you play. For example if you run across dragon cultists and defeated their evil magic ritual you might note, “dragon cultists” there.
Ohhh
But it’s not needed to start playing
Ok thank you
@echo kelp what background should I choose? If I have to choose it at all
I am very confused guys sorry if I am causing any inconvenience 😭😭😭
Pick a background that fits the kind of character you’re building.
Ok
A background comes with some skills, ability score improvements and a feat. Go for one that will help with what you're aiming for.
A wizard might not get any use out of the Savage Attacker feat in the soldier background, but they might appreciate the extra spells from acolyte or the benefits of criminal.
Don't worry about the names of the backgrounds, they're only labels. Pick what you want, describe it how you like.
I am trying to build a wizard who uses elemental and some other type of magic. He will also have daggers for harnessing his abilties
when can this game start?
Anything except Soldier can give you a boost to your Intelligence, the most important ability for a wizard. Have a look at the options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions

Just as soon as you find a group to play with, presuming you're familiar with the rules. Have you played D&D before?
Those are both ways to play. Some folk leave messages on forums, other groups have everyone on camera or in person games.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
I'm gonna go with soldier high elf ranger. Can I go with this?
Yup
you can go with any combination
Guys I am not seeing daggers in my tool proficiency section
Can I send ss here?
@wild onyx can you help me please
Daggers are a simple weapon. Check your class page to see what wizards have for weapon proficiencies.
Yeah I checked. I chose criminal/spy because they have daggers
What group are available to be play with guys?
Dont have to chose your background purely because they get daggers, with wizard you also get the option to get a dagger and theyre very cheap to aquire in game
Well my character is also chaotic good so criminal/spy fits ig
Then that works
What is the difference between human and variant human?
Variant human is from the 2014 rules and basically instead of giving you a +1 species bonus to every ability score, gives you a +2 to one score and a starting feat.
Ohh ok
I'm all in favour of the rougish wizard. Makes a change.
Hehe thank you
Btw do I have to draw my own character?
Because I am seeing an option to add an image
You don't have to, no. You can if you feel so inclined!
People like to use heroforge (3d): https://www.heroforge.com/ and picrew (2d) https://picrew.me/en/ to create their character images
Nope! Only if you want to
Ohh ok thank you for this
Can you help me create my character using picrew? It's a bit difficult for me
It's honestly just a bit of experimentation about which generator you like and I often use the randomize function to get something to start out with that I can then adjust.
Here's one generator that works quite well for dnd:
https://picrew.me/en/image_maker/708151
Hello :]
I would like to play d&d but it's tricky finding a time and a place to do so
My character creation is done
There are many different places where people meet up and build groups, so I'd look for the one that is right for you. On this server we have #find-a-game, but there are many other places. Iamrazorwing has compiled a lot of them into this helpful document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
Now it's time to look for a group you can join. I recommend getting together with your friends! If that isn't possible, my comment just above yours may help!
Ty, I've invited a couple of my friends to the server too so hopefully we can all find a cool group to join up with
Or build your own group. DMing may seem challenging, but it's actually fun and there is guidance out there.
While you’re finding a group, I also recommend posting your character sheet in here or #character-discussion to get it reviewed, just to clear up any possible misconceptions or mistakes your sheet might have before you start your first game
I might give it a try
Should I send the pdf?
If you made it on D&DBeyond you can generate a share link on the character page to send
Ohh ok wait lemme send that
This is my character sheet
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Yugo_The_Thunderstrom_159521414.pdf
Undying Noob already explained the gameplay difference, but lorewise there isn't one. It's just a human with a talent or specialisation
Ohh
Alright so a few comments:
- On stats, you’re spread quite evenly which you normally don’t want to do. Generally you want to prioritize your primary ability score(s) and following that one or two secondary scores (usually Dex/Con/Wis). How did you generate your stat array? There might be a better distribution for you.
- On your features, I see you chose to make a Custom Background and are missing an Origin Feat. Make sure you get DM approval for the custom background, since those were moved to DM adjudication for the 2024 rules. You should have 2 Origin Feats, one from Human and one from your Background. If it’s missing from Human, just select a feat from the species feature dropdown menu within the character builder. If it’s missing from your custom background I believe you’ll need to add it in manually in the feats tab of your character sheet.
- On your spells, you’re missing a few Wizard spells from being a Wizard. So far you have 2 Wizard cantrips and 3 level 1 Wizard spells. You should have 3 Wizard cantrips and 6 level 1 Wizard spells. Additionally, you’ve doubled up on Magic Missile which is redundant 😅 .
Specifically on the last point, I would remove the extra Magic Missile that you have due to the Wizard class, so you have 1 cantrip, 4 spells to learn. The cantrip is pretty much up to you. The level 1 spells are too but I strongly recommend:
- Absorb Elements
- Mage Armor
- Shield
I generated my stats array with point buying. I thought spreading evenly would make me more versatile.
Also I didn't see the feat section previously so I will look into that. What kind of feat can I add based on my backstory? Do you have annu recommendations?
Ok I will add these three too
The game encourages specialization over versatility, your teammates should be able to cover your gaps and vice versa. There are classes like Bard who can get a lot of skill versatility but even then their versatility comes from their class features instead of their stat array; they still follow the same “priority format” as all the other classes.
As for the feats, it can be any feat that’s labeled as an Origin Feat. There’s no wrong pick per se. That being said Alert is very strong for most classes, Wizard included
Ok thanks for your help
Np!
Btw I am not seeing two magic missile in my screen. There are two cantrip, elementalism and ray of frost, and 3 level 1 spell, Ice knife, magic missile, thunderwave.
Hmm, the PDF you sent lists Magic Missile twice
You might want to check/change the level 1 spell you gained via Magic Initiate (Wizard) instead
Ok
It’s looking a lot better already! The stats are definitely a lot better, though i suggest swapping your Con & Cha scores
On spells, you have the right number of cantrips, but it seems this time you’ve doubled up Elementalism. It seems the same thing also happened with Mage Armor. Both of those spells are listed twice on the PDF.
Additionally, you have too many level 1 Wizard spells known this time instead of too few
From what I see you have:
- Thunderwave
- Ice Knife
- Magic Missile
- Mage Armor
- Shield
- Absorb Elements
- Charm Person
- Disguise Self
You’ll need to axe 2 of them
Can you share the ss where it says I have two elementalism?
Yeah I can DM it to you
Ok I am fine with that
Go to the magic initiate feat (under background, I believe) and change those two so they're not duplicates.
Screenshot sent!
I am seeing I also doubled minor illusion
Ok thank you
Yeah just saw that too
Ok. Can you tell how can I get the wizard role here?
Almost perfect! You still have 8 Wizard spells learned when you should have 6. Mage Armor is doubled up as well. To make it quick and easy remove Mage Armor and 1 more spell from the list of spells you have learned
Oh! And I’m not seeing a second Origin Feat yet
Yeah I only have option of adding 1 origin feat which was the magic initiate feat
Ok lemme do that
You can add in a second one from the actual character sheet instead of the builder
you just need to go to the feats section of your character sheet on DDB and there should be a little widget icon where you’re able to add more feats
Ohh
@wheat crystal now check
Looks perfect this time!
So what is my next step?

K thanks idk what some of the words like homebrewn mena tho
In this context it would likely refer to material (adventures, species, classes and other) written by players rather than official published content from the developers. Another word for it is homebrew. Think of it like mods for a video game.
Oh ok
What would be a good starting set/kit for a Monk going for way of mercy?
What do you mean by starting set/kit?
Tools and equipment.
You don't really get many choices regarding equipment for a monk and tools depend heavily on the DM's setting/game.
So whatever you pick is probably going to be fine.
Okay thank you.
I suppose you could buy a Healer's Kit just to go for that vibe
Plus they're not bad to have on hand
Anyone now how to do the leveling up i kinda don't have a grasp of it im a new player and playing at school but still don't know the full fundamentals
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at level 1 and advances in level by adventuring. With each new level, characters acquire new capabilities that equip them to handle greater challenges.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. As they overcome challenges and complete adventures, characters earn Experience Points (XP), which are awarded by the Dungeon Master. The Character Advancement table lists the XP you need to advance to a level
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
Your DM might start your group’s characters at a level higher than 1. A DM can also use feats as a form of advancement after characters reach level 20 to provide greater power to characters who have no more levels to gain.
are you wondering about when you level up or what you need to do when you have leveled up
I was trying to get a herb kit since I had proficency in medicine.
Mire how howdo I level up by character my dm told us we should've leveled up byt we followed the book and there was no milestones n found out online that are
sounds like youre playing a pre-written module, generally if your dm says you level up you level up he might not be following the adventure word for word. if you think he made a mistake somehow by giving you a level up early just ask him
also i dont suggest looking into modules youre playing if youre not the dm, might spoil yourself on the story
Hi y’all me and three other people played a sample game at comicon and now want to start playing . Would we all need separate discord accounts or can we just use this one . And if we did use different accounts how would we all join the same adventure?

are you new to it?
When you say "discord accounts" do you mean like the profile that you log into, or are you talking about this server?
I'm just a little confused by the question
im assuming he means when you join an online game it can be trough discord voice chat, in which case every player would need their own discord account
You increase your hit points, hit dice, and add any new features to your sheet.
Let's do a fighter moving from level 1 to level 2. Let's say at level 1 they have 10 HP and 1d10 hit dice to use during a short rest. At level 2, they can either roll a d10 or take the average (6) and add it to their total HP. If they roll, they can wind up with anywhere between 11 and 20 HP at level 2, or they can take the safe average for 16. They also add a d10 to their hit dice pool, so now they have 2d10 for short rests.
At level 1, a fighter has Second Wind, Fighting Style, and Weapon Mastery. At level 2, they get Action Surge and Tactical Mind. Add these to your character sheet.
Spellcasters may get to add new spells. For all classes, you get more HP and add any new features to your character sheet on level up!
if you already have a party its probaly smart to post a #looking-for-dm post, to see how check out #find-a-game

Hello
I would like to get some combat experience before my real life campaign lol!
I actually thought no one except me played dnd anymore lol
There’s nearly 300k people in this server alone, and MANY, MANY more that aren’t in here. A lot of people still play
I have been trying to play for a month ROFL!
Heyy, I’m pretty much a dnd newbie, well I’m in my first campaign rn and such, but I’ve heard that there is other stuff like west marches? Can somebody give me a quick explanation on how west marches work and what I need to require to join?
Basically rather than a campaign with a specific party and a story, westmarch is when you take whoever is available to play at whenever the game is happening which might not be at a specific time, usually in the same world, but with less narrative focus on a bigger story since the group is gonna keep changing
google says over 13 million people actively play D&D worldwide
I see, thank you! Is it usually over text?
Depends entirely on the group, but I've no idea how common westmarches based on using text are. Most games overall tend to be over at least voice, with text based campaigns usually being played with a "play-by-post" (pbp) style, where the game is played whenever text is posted, rather than atively like a voice campaign
Voice is most common, but some people might by over text, usually in a "play by post" style, where the game is played asynchronously whenever text is posted, rather than actively like a voice campaign
Thank you
The problem is that I prefer to not use voice chat at any cost
But for a active campaign like that text wouldn't be good
I think atleast
Yeah, an active campaign over text is gonna be very slow. I've only ever played in one where one of the players only used text, while the rest used voice (I was the DM and agreed to run for a group, not knowing this fact)
That one player's turns and any roleplay took ages and really slowed down the entire game, and I can't imagine what it would be like with text only for everyone lol
Thus the play by psot -style probably being more common
Likely. I've never been to one, so I have no idea how combat would even work in a play by post
First time actually trying dnd and it's already kinda complicated lol
I'll find a way
Thanks a lot!!!!!
I know I just dropped by out of a sudden lol
It can come off as intimidating, what with the rules being seemingly several books, but it's lot simpler that it seems, and most of the rules you don't need to know at all times, just look up when required, and most of the books are content to pick from 😛
hello, im kinda of a newcomer to dnd and do you guys have any tips on how to rp without feeling weird? thanks
Yeag I watched some vids so that I'm not so unprepared but it's still a little hard, especially bc I have no idea of how a backstory should go or what are the limitations of my characters. Also for some reason when I try to make my character sheet in those websites it always ends up with all stats being -1
Hmmm Im also a new to dnd (so Im not sure how the rp works for it) but I do have some experience with rp
the dm helped with stats and stuff so my stats are fine thankfully
My best advice is simply trying to think as the character, but that depends on you bc maybe you arent very creative or isnt super obssessed with ur character to the point of pretending to be them
the lore part is the one that i invested the most, but im scared of not being able to like be the character
You don't need an extensive backstory, your character's story is about to start, so there's no reason for there to be some major plot behind things. Someone wanting to go on an adveture for excitement, growing stronger or for profit is plenty 😛
Your limitations are basically in character creation. Just follow the steps, and if you're using something like Beyond's character creator (great way to get the hang of things), you can rarely go wrong in terms of what you can do
And no idea about the -1 thing. Sounds like you have the base score (8) for each stat if all of them are -1, so likely you just skipped a step picking your abilit yscores somewhere
What I try to do is pretend im writing a novel or book and that im explaning their actions. And if you want first person just change the pronouns
Must be it
thanks for the tip! might actually be helpfull
:]
i made the character pretty different from me so part of me is nervous of not being able to rp properly
I used to do that in my warrior cat roblox rps 😭😭😭 but we forget about that
i used to rp in minecraft 💀 hypixel housing, but i was a teenager and it was through text so its waaay easier
I can't imagine rping by voice
Zaaaaamnn
Im going to see if there's a way for me to enter a campaign or smth I'll be back :]
Less pressure
yeah
or more pressure. if one person is making a fool of themselves it can be easier for others to join in.
Wait, another nugget!
BROTHERHOOD
Finding a campaign is harder than I thought
I think they're all full and running already
There’s local games stores or libraries
Online there’s reddit, lfg (#find-a-game channels in the server, roll20, and dnd beyond forums
people post in the channels daily and posts are automatically removed after 7 days, so things should be relatively fresh. However, as there are a grea deal more players than DMs, they do fill up pretty quickly.
Argueably, finding a group that works is the hardest part.
I tried roll20 but I kinda gave up cuz it's too much stuff in my screen and I don't understand (I'm mobile) 😞
Most that I went to see where already full so yeah
I doubt anyone in my city even knows about dnd (if they know it's bc of stranger things bruh). For context I live in Brazil which also makes it harder to play dnd
Either christian moms think it's demonic or the only available portuguese servers seens to be dead
Hi mobile, I’m Nugget. And me too
WOAG
If you're looking at a game with a bunch of people already posting, don't necessarily treat it as "already full" unless the DM says so. Better games are picked from people with some interview or questions, rather than just first come first serve in a thread
Most of them are for already experienced players or use a complex website (what is owlbear?? Or vtt). I did find some aimed for newbies however I dunno if the timezones match
vtt is a virtual tabletop. more or less a communal map program people can use
Hmmmm I think I've seen it before
Owlbear is a type of vtt, smae with roll20 and foundry, for example. They are usually pretty simple
owlbear and roll20 are just two types of vtts
They basically act as a place to have your sheet and maybe use some maps
Ones where you can move your character icon and stuff right?
I see
of if it was like me a few years ago, MS paid and sharing the file after every turn
Also unless the post mentions experience, most games tend to be fine with new players, as long as they are at least motivate to learn, and know the basics
Lol I can see myself doing that
I love to learn new things
roll20 really lags on my computer. DnDBeyond's map thing actually has a lag that still keeps things functional.
Tbh, DnD always looked like a wonderland for me cuz I love making characters and stories and such and just doing that with other ppl while creating an adventure just seems like a dream
Wait are you Grimlock
sure
Cool!!!!!!!!!!
i had verbal coaching so i don't reference myself in the third person.
i still like to munch metal, though
Do you like the wfc game Grimlock
No one controls Grimlock
yeah, i should dig out that figure too. i honestly forgot what my display picture thing was on here until you mentioned it. if you want to make grimlock in game, make a warforged druid-barbarian multiclass with the folk hero background.
My brother has a grimlock account he made for reddit so now I always remember him
wildshape into a t-rex
i'm honestly surprised Hasbro didn't have WotC make the current Transformers RPG, considering they own the IP. they licensed it out to Renegade Press, and they have it on their Essence20 system
Yes!!!!
Honestly it's just going downfall nowadays
They cancel everything
Sigh
to be fair, when Renegade got the license for them they were planning to use the 5e system for Transformers, G.I.Joe., My Little Pony, and Power Rangers, but ran into issues. or just changed their mind. oh well.
Hi everyone
sup

Hello!
IMHO the best thing to do is go to D&D Beyond's website. u can create a free account and start playing aorund with building a character. it walks u thru step by step
hi jyrak
Not to sound foolish but... where do i go too said website?
I was wondering if someone was willing to help me? I'm going to be a DM for my friends and I'm incredibly nervous about it since it's basically tomorrow
in your web browser putting in the above info
Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios.
Try to know more than your players

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
thanks not sure why the first one didnt work and the second one i hit / not ? lol
Wrong commands Mitcho
It’s ?newdm not ?dmnew
Thanks to you as well Mitcho
Oh! And something else
I keep clicking things but nothings happening
May I quickly summarise my session 0? I kept it pretty simple so we could learn the rules.
Remember, the players don’t expect a perfect game. Perfection is boring: they want a game that is yours.
if you want to get into the nitty gritty of dmin check out the #dm-discussion channel
yup yup
I'm so nervous about it all
Perfectly normal
Like, what worries me the most is how encounters work
The way I see it, being nervous just means you care
i have been doin it for 37+ years and still get a lil nervous everytime
Like battles and stuff, I'm super stumped
I’ve been playing DnD for 2 years, and from the first day (I started as a DM) till now I still get nervous
You throw some enemies at the party, see how it goes
Ah I see, I'll bring this over to #dm-discussion so I don't clog this chat up

?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
So if an enemy has 100hp and i roll 3d8 that goes 8x3=24 and 24+5 is 29 so does that mean i dealth 29 damage?
You're very unlikely to roll max on all the dice like that, but yes.
Ahhh so thats how it works
I just add them up
Okay i get it now
But how do i know if i got a high enough roll? Say i have a d20 to deal damage i need to roll a 15 or above? Something like that? But how do i know i need to deal 15 or above?
You might not know. When you attack an enemy, the DM will tell you if you hit or not, and after enough hits you might be able to figure out what their AC is / what you need to roll 😏
What is ac?
It depends on what you're trying to do. Hitting an enemy means meeting or exceeding their Armor Class (AC).
Armor class
Armor Class, basically you need to roll equal or higher than the number of the target's AC to hit them
So i need to roll higher than their ac to deal damage?
showboo did you read the basic in this bot?
Basically, there are formulas in the game to determine those numbers you need to meet or exceed. Sometimes the DM makes up those numbers.

Yes, Or equal to.
Either meet or beat, so if an enemy has an AC of 15, you need a 15 or higher with your attack roll
Yes but im still confused so im trying to ask for clarifications
ok j ust checkin
Honestly i played everweave and got hooked
My little cousins wanna play dnd so i tried it
Im just trying to learn as much so i can maybe make a game for them even if its scuffed
Scuffed or not players will enjoy what you make as long is has heart put into it
Oh so thats how combag works
Yeah
And landing directly on a 20 with your dice will deal extra damage
Also known as a "critical success"
Are their guides on enemies hp or enemy types?
Like double damage? Isnt that like the highest you could role?
Any monster stat block lists the creature type and its hp, or a way to roll its hp
Im sorry if im being annoying
The rules have a number of monsters and info on how to run them: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/how-to-use-a-monster
Nah its alright lol. I like spouting info
And yes
Also a creature's type only matters if specifically mentioned by some feature, so you generally don't need to worry about the type unless specified. For example undead and constructs aren't naturally unable to be healed, but many healing spells include a text that prevents them from working on those creatures 😛
And some damage types do more to them. Undead take extra radiant damage if im correct.
Only if specifically mentioned in that specific undead monster's stat block
Does my weapon matter? Say i have a wooden sword that deals 1 damage, i roll a 3d8 whis is 24 but my weapon only deals 1 so does that mean i only deal 3 damage?
There isn't a sword like that, but yeah, you'd roll the damage (in this case it'd only ever be just 1), then add your strength modifier, assuming the weapon uses strength
Also you wouldn't roll a 3d8 anywhere in this situation. You'd roll a d20 for the attack roll, then the damage roll if you hit
Weapons don't deal flat damage. The number you roll on your dice effect it. Example:
A Longsword on a successful attack has you roll 2 d8 dice. You roll those dice then add the weapons attack modifier (say plus 3) to that rolled total
Longsword only deals 1d8 damage though, not 2d8
(I don't remember the longswords damage it's just example numbers)
So if i attack a person with 20hp and i roll a d20 that rolls say 15 and i needed 12 or above to bypass the ac i only hit them for 3 damage? Or 15?
Im sorry im so dumb
Well it depends on what you roll for the weapon. 15 would hit, then you roll the damage specified by the weapon, and add your modifier used for the attack
It depends on what you hit them with. Each weapon has a specific damage dice associated with it. So for a longsword, that's 1d8. Roll that, add relevant bonuses, and you get the total.
Also what dictates i have to role how many dice
Enemy hp doesn't make a difference to any of these rolls, by the way. You would do the same thing if they had 1 or 100 hit points remaining
Spells specify how many dice as do weapons.
Is there like a guide that tells me how many dice i need?
Each weapon has a specific damage they do, like 1d8 for longsword (You can find these on the weapon table)
Spells specify the damage in their text
ANy other damaging feature will also specify the damage they deal
Basically m:
You roll to hit. If you hit. Proceed.
You roll for damage. This depends on what you’re attacking with.
Most dice sets have 7 dice (d4, d6, d8, d10 d%, d12 and d20), and thats all you need. Sometimes dpeending on the class you might never need some of these, but they're good to have all on hand lol
That’s for attack roll based attacks
Ahhhh
Do i need like a map? A diorama of some kind or can we just go with our imagination and just some dice?
Theater of the mind is enough, so you dont need a map if you dont want to
A map isn't necessary, no, but some folks prefer it.
All of the above. Dnd only truly needs dice and paper and a good imagination to be fun
I personally can't keep track of things at all without one, so I always prefer to have a map, but it all comes down to preference 😛
I recommend you have some sort of battle map for combat tho
Outside of combat tho? Nah
Ill just sit my little cousins on the table and make up a story and ask them to roll dice if anything happens
You can also use a piece of paper to draw out small rooms and use random objects like pebbles to represent where they are
Graph paper is good
This is gonna be a really scuffed game since i dont know the rules, i dont know how dice rolls work, i dont know races and buffs and how spells work, ill just have to wing this
Maybe try this D&D intro advenure that simplifies things for players and the DM: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
Ohh okok
what do people who play on computer use? like if they can't play in person
Roll20 or owlbear rodeo
Roll20 better imo

^ some ways that folks play D&D online
Am i able to make a dnd charaxter a hybrid of two races?
Changeling lets you mimic other species on the surface level, so that might be an option; but mechanically mixing the features of two species falls into homebrew and newer players should avoid homebrew when possible until they are more familiar with the standard game
Whats homebrew?
Homebrew are non-offical rules that payers might make up or get from third party sources.
Ohh ok
They require an okay from the dungeon master to be run.
The problem is that newer players aren't familiar enough with the game yet to know what good homebrew looks like, or have the ability to evaluate if something is wildly over or underpowered verses the base game; so it's best to leave until later
There’s half elf ig
Makes sense
Hello again i just read like a whole book
23 pages but still
But i dont think they had anything about how to make a character
Do you guys know any free website to make characters?
Roll20 or dnd beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
is Shield considered a weapon on dueling feats?
A shield is not a weapon, no
You can use a shield and a one handed weapon and still get the benefit of the Dueling Fighting Style
okay thanks
Hello! I was wondering if anybody could help me get the concepts of the game, and maybe answer some of my questions? I’m sorry i’m kinda of new but i love the concept of the game! Thank you!
one more thing, can i use shield as bonus attack? to shield bash maybe because i wanna use scimitar and it has light properties
you can't attack with a shield unless you have a feature or something that explicitly states that you can, you would need to have a separate light weapon in your offhand instead of a shield if that's what you want to do
ah i see thanks
Like do we all log in our own discord accounts or use mine
i just remembered i have another question 😅 how about dragonborn breath weapon can i use it as extra attack if i attack with light weapon while holding a shield?
i feel so bad asking and asking again 😭
Dndbeyond is our go to and wr use discord.
Is anyone looking to play now? I have a level 3 character built out, it’s my first time actually playing but I have a decent sense of the rules from watching podcasts like critical role and others
If you are doing voice, then everyone needs their own discord account to be able to chat.
More info: it’s a level 3 wizard, variant aasimar, conjuration subclass. Would love a group that has a sense of humor but can adapt to any roleplay style

How does one find new player friendly ...groups(?)
I'm so, so, SO new to DND as we can probably tell, but I've had interest in DND for a while, I often hear stories about runs and I've watched some playthroughs of BG3, and other DND-like games. I'm just unsure of how to start or what to do.
Seeing that there above, I suppose I can read that as well, saving less trouble. ^^
same for me
guys what's background feature vs background characteristica on DND beyond?
A background feature is like Soldier or Sage, and the benefits it brings.
A background characteristic is something that describes your character, eye colour, faith, personality traits.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
When you're ready, check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

ok will do thanks
The above for you too. Just keep an eye on the descriptions of the games on offer. If it says "heavy tactical dungeon crawling" or "1-20, serious players only" maybe give it a pass. As long as you know how to put a character together, make an ability check and your actions available in combat most groups will be fine with new folk.
Never trust anyone who says they want a serious game of D&D.
Have you used #find-a-game ? If not, try your local game store.
haven't used find a game
also dnd isn't really big in the philippines😭
oh wait actually I have
As mentioned, there are more options than just here. Roll20, LFG on Reddit, the D&D Beyond forums, community servers.
sigh
looks like im eating toothpaste
most of the stuff on r/lfg is 18+ and one of the ones that arent requires me to wake up in early morning
There tend to be more games in the NA timezones, it's true. You could always raise a post in #looking-for-dm.
The dragonborn breath weapon replaces one of your attacks when using the attack action.
So at level 5~6, if you are of a class or sub class that gets two attacks around there, you could replace one of the two attacks you get with your scimitar with your breath weapon attack
If you haven't already, check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

how complex does these sessions usually get, like full on voice actors and storyboards level complexity
Usually? There's a great range. Some folks want to throw dice and crush skeletons, some folk go the whole hog and dress as their characters. I'd say most are on the more casual end of the spectrum, voices can be fun but not essential.
What do you mean by storyboards, though? A typical game isn't scripted.
uh so i can't attack with scimitar and breath fire while still holding the shield... okayy
moreso as in people really get complex, as in into character so much, i know people who would like a reasonable story
the breath weapon replaces one of your normal attacks
so if you have more than one attack, you can still use your scimitar the same turn
is double attack still active when i'm not holding 2 light weapon?
You don't need a hand free for a breath weapon attack.
some classes get a feature around level 5 called "Extra Attack" that let's you make more than one attack when using the attack action
oh yeah i mean before level 5
before level 5, it's an either/or sort of deal
Hi guys I'm new to d&d
hmm i see i see, okayy
Some do, some don't, it honestly varies from group to group. Ideally you'll have clear and open communication with your fellow players and DM about such things, helping bring your dramatic moments to life without them pulling the focus too much.

So I am planning on playing a fey wanderer ranger in my upcoming DnD campaign in the wild beyond the Witchlight.
What are like spells I should prioritise from the spells list. Feats to look out for when I get to level 4. How should I approach combats and non combat scenarios.
And lastly is it worth multiclassing and if so what should I look at?
This is on 2024 rules by the way
I'd suggest checking with folks in #character-discussion or #optimization but generally I'd not recommend multiclassing for new to D&D folks as it can add additional complexity while you're trying to learn the game.
Spells, I'd suggest something to hurt, something to help and something useful for what you feel your role will be.

and those bots give great basic DMing tips. if you have more questions after that, hop back over and ask away
Hi im totally new to the world of dnd and got nobody whou would learn me to play. So i wanted to ask some people with experience. I know the whole idea behind dnd but would love if somebody could dm me and pull me into the dnd world
see the above bots (especially the first of 3) to read up on the basics then hop back here with specific questions
Well first off hiw does a dm know what the players should do and tell tgem what direction to go
SUPER SIMPLE ANSWER: as the DM you present the scene, the people in the area, and what is happening. the players then decide how they wish to interact and then you decide how to react to that then just keep going
And the DM and players (not player characters) should discuss expectations so the DM can prepare the kind of adventure everyone wants to play - but that also means the players should try and buy in to the adventure presented and try not to go chaos monkey on it to see if they can break it... it's all about communicating expectations and good faith participation.
Next is as a dm (cus i wanna be one) how do you write tge story? Bcs if players decude what tgey wanna do is it all just spontainous? And if yes how do you decide wich attacks hit which dont if tgey can or canno do certain things and stuff like that
Several ways to approach it but one way is to start small with a quest giver hiring the party to do <thing>
I tell you the strange lights you're here to investigate are in the valley to the north, you don't go "let's steal a boat!" and hare off in the opposite direction.
Then present complications as they try and do <thing> and a story begins to develop
also, there are many prewritten stories you can use to learn from
Yeah if you're new, running a prewritten adventure is a great way to start - that way you can focus on the mechanics of running the game rather then worrying about writing up the adventure with the non-player characters, enemies, puzzles, background lore/information, etc.
Ok last qestion for now how do you ensure players have ballanced stats? Is there a limit or sum?
Another way to approach creating an adventure is to think high level about what powers and factions are in your world/setting/region you'll be running in and think about what they're trying to accomplish in the world and how they interact with each other. Then use that to figure out what kinds of plot points to create and then how that trickles down to where your players characters enter the scene.
Just the standard of following the rules when creating a character. You could say that players have to use Standard Array for generating their ability scores.
And no loading up on magical items without DM approval.
Having the players pic keither Standard Array or Point Buy is the best option. Rolling for stats is gonna be pretty much the only way to coem up with unbalanced stats 😛
No idea what those two are

^ That's the official rules on how to generate ability scores
Hi
Welcome!
Kk so there are official campaigns i can buy?
Yep! See https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/adventures
Or your local game/book stores (support them if you can!)
There's also 3rd party/community created adventures at the site DMsGuild
There's also some free ones
?tag ddb claim
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
Check out Intro to Stormwreck Isle
And what everything do you need for a session? Like ik the dice and figures but otherways
Rules, character sheets, dice, an adventure to run, and a way to communicate is really all you need
Maps and figures can be nice but not needed to play D&D
And those i need to make myself right
Lots of resources online. Image search for battlemaps, use creature art and a token maker to make tokens.
Yeah there's so much free and cheap stuff out there - D&D is a creative game and so much of our community love to create things and share it or sell it for very reasonable prices.

Hi again
Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ive somehow made a character sheet drom dndbeyond, but i have so many questions tho
Feel free to ask specific questions - folks here can help answer them
Thanks
Hi there. I'm new in the DnD community, and I have no idea on how to play. I love fantasy, in books for example. I've discovered DnD in Stranger Things (maybe like a lot of new players). I know it's probably not exactly the same as how it is in the series, but I want to play, I really liked the little part of the universe I've seen in Stranger Things. So can someone please explain how it works, it would be really cool
and how i can play online, if its possible
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
okay thanks for that, didn't see it, I'm going to read everything. Thank you : )
Hey mods, for new players one you at some point recently posted a link I think an official example of a brief adventure play through? It is nice to provide new players with an example. Can you please re-share as I lost it before I could even play it.
It can be found in the #learn-to-play channel as well here: #learn-to-play message
does anybody know how to determine my spellcasting modifier in 5.5e?
Your spellcasting modifier is whatever your the modifier of you spellcasting ability is, i.e. Int, Wis or Cha modifier.
oh alr ty

Is it possible to make a fist style paladin?
you can make an unarmed fighting style Paladin, yeah
I would suggest asking the dm for knuckle dusters
No need. Most if not all Paladin features and Smites work directly off of Unarmed Strikes.
True but I'm saying for more base damage
Thankfully, Paladins have access to the Unarmed Fighting style, which increases the base damage of their Unarmed Strikes to 1d6 or 1d8.
yeah no need to homebrew anything
and there are even magic items for unarmed strikes in the books that are equivalent to +1/+2/+3 magic weapons
Howdy. Let us know if you have any questions
Y'know, I always feel exceptionally with my class pick of mostly having an idea of maining Fighter.
Stick me on the frontline with a halberd or sone other polearm, heavy plate and I'm good to go, unfortunately.
Like to think I at can at least mostly flavor it with something like... second son of a family well known for their magical ability, except all he's ever managed was a basic cantrip or two (Shown via Magic Initiate feat, not exactly optimal, or maybe even allowed depending on the DM I guess) so he leaves to make a name for himself or some such.
Like I said, I appear to be uncreative at best, any tips?
you could roll for a species+class combo at random, then roll up some more details of your life with random tables (see xanathars for example) and then put everything together so it fits narratively
basically, if you tend to make the same kind of character again and again, leaving choices to random chance can help with finding new interesting ideas
Alternatively , listen to songs and read some books! They usually can give some inspiration
I personally don’t like pure randomness for both classes and species because it usually takes a while for me to get inspired by a concept
Suppose if worse comes to worse I could keep the same sort of aesthetic with like... say a Paladin to work in and around oaths, a beast master Ranger and so on?
Sure
Hello, good evening everyone. Is anyone in need of a player?
My name is Miguel Messias, I’m from Brazil, and I’m looking for a group to play D&D with. I have a few years of experience playing the game, and my favorite classes are Warlock and Sorcerer.
Any DM in need of a player?

Should I create my own campaign from scratch or take an existing campaign and modify it?
Ultimately up to you but using a prewritten adventure can save you time and effort by providing a bunch of prebuilt stuff that you don't have to make up
How do you guys run or come up or create a campaign for your players
Good question for #dm-discussion
I like to use prewritten adventures and tweak to suit my group because I'm a busy adult and don't have time to handcraft homebrew campaigns from scratch.
Ohhhh ok thanks
I am new to D&D and stopped by to say hi!

I don’t know why but always that I want to get in a campaign and I send the message, the dm never answer
I have a question do tieflings need to worship a god?
no
Nope unless the DM has a reason in their world
Cool i was just trying to make a tiefling but im not sure how that would work
no one, not even clerics, need to worship a god. clerics can worship the ideal or philosophy of something. say life for life clerics or the sun/light for light clerics
Again depends on the DM because in my game clerics and paladins absolutely need to worship at least one
ah
I just wanna make a tiefling criminal with a questionable morality that has one crumb of goodness
Shouldn’t be a problem
Is there anywhere I can buy the caves of chaos adventure digitally? I bought the physical edition but hasn't arrived yet and I'd like to prepare

I may try find a playthrough or DM after February, as it'd be stupid if I went to look for one now. As during February I'll be more absent a lot more from anything online.
I didn't know where else to exactly say this, so.. mb
any tips on being a DM, even if you never played as a player?
Have you watched any games from critical role, dimension 20 or Legends of Avantris? There are so many groups that post their campaigns on YT now. They can give you an idea of how the game can be played and they’re also super entertaining. You could also take a look at the Dungeon Master’s Guide, which has a lot of tips and tricks.
What do I put in the skill part of the sheet and the saving throws part 😭
Assuming you know the rules...
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do a little reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
Hey quick question I want to read the player handbook but I’m not sure if I want to purchase it. Is there a free version with just the basic rules and guidelines to help me get started?

I’m looking for one shots designed for 2024 rules. Does anyone have recommendations? Should I ask about this in another thread?
What level of english would you say is necessary to play dnd online? I've played for like 5+ years but in my native language and in person, so I'm worried it won't be the same if I'm not as fluent in english
any tips for new players
Welcome aboard!
Anything in particular or broad tips?
Make a character that
- You’ll enjoy playing
- Will be enjoyable for players to play alongside with.
- Will be enjoyable for the DM to run games for.
Just asking were can I buy dice
Any game or hobby shop will have them. Even places like Walmart or target will have them.
If you already want invest the money into the hobby.
The free basic rules are than enough.
Ok
Plus places like the DMsguild website provide several dozens of legally free adventures.
I feel like the level of English that you're using right now is good.
Ok thanks
I recommend newcomers first play several different single session adventures (called one shots) before trying to commit to long campaign.
There are many different ways to play dnd and the best way to learn what your preferences are by trying different things.
Plus one shots provide opportunities to learn the game by playing, get to know members of the community, and require a small time investment.

Can I run dragon of icespire peak online with like one player?
Well, thank you, but I am sceptical if I will be able to pull it off like that on the fly during the session
I just wonder if people who play (at least here) are generally natives or just can speak english pretty well, if it's the latter I should be fine I guess
Is online dnd safe?
I just wanted to ask you that since I think you have experience
Its usually safe but like most things online, if something is fishy just run
Like if you were being cyberbullied or if someone's trying to scam you etc
Ok thanks
Im new. 43 and never played but always had the imagination for character creation. My friend talked me into it finally but im main hung up on the small details. QUESTION: How do u figure out your proficiencies on a home brew class?
It’s homebrew: you make it up
Well, #find-a-game has some info there
Plus dnd beyond forums, roll20 or reddit
Thx
a homebrew class that's completed, should have proficiencies laid out. which homebrew is it? can maybe help you find out
Well Ive made a Luxedon Barbarian Ferochemist
I could be asking the question in the wrong way. Mond if I send u a pic of my character sheet and tell me if u can help?
check out #character-discussion - I've got files off but if you post an imgur or somethign we can take a look and help out
Ok
Question. Right now I am completely new to the dnd stuff, what should I get in order to have a good understanding of everything?
I already bought the DM guide, 2024 edition
If you haven't already, reading the first two chapter of the basic rules is an excellent start:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
thx
Should I also get the monster guide and player handbook later?
Or is there a free version available for those
The one I liked contains all the free parts of the PHB, MM and DMG
You can start with that and if you feel like it's worth an investment, also pick the other two up.
The Player's handbook is definitely the most important book though, no matter if you're the DM or a player. It contains the basic rules of the game overall.
This one here?
yep!
You can see that it's divided into three sections when you scroll down.
I will buy the phb when I get the chance
Thx for the help!
Now gotta make my friends take a look at it lol
#looking-for-players Hei, newbie here, looking for groups to join in Maribor, Slovenia...?
@sullen leaf yo

Hi all!
I’m new here, im a fantasy artist who loves D&D character design.
I’m here mainly to enjoy the community and share art. Happy to join the community and learn from everyone here!
Welcome!
I have a question
ask away
Do you think we should play D&D physically or digitally?
both, both are good in their own way
ultimately, it comes down to personal preferences but also avaliability
and you can mix in digital elements into IRL games or play digitally with paper sheets and real dice
hello people
im new watched a lot of people play DAD and i would love to play aswell

ok ive read most of it and i know how to play
Hello, my partner and I are going to be DM-ing together for the first time. I was wondering technically how this can work as both of us want to work on the campaign and how many players is a good number?
i think 4 is ideal, 5 is managable, 6 and above are too much
3-5 is the sweet spot in my experience
agreed
Hmmm okay thank you
if you are looking for online games, check out #find-a-game or roll20.net or places like /lfg on reddit
I guess the number of DMs does not matter 😭 Less than 6 will always be good
well its pretty uncommon to have co-DMs in the first place. not sure there is a lot people who can give advice with that
My current party is 7 :D
TOO MANY
Is it bad that the reason why we want to start at 6 is because we might think some players will dip just because they just want to try it out and are technically busy with IRL matters, though half of them are dedicated DnD players already
Was 8 but one dipped
I'M DMing a short campaign for a bunch of teens and their group is way too big too, but it wasnt really feasible otherwise. but normally I would not chose this. giving everyone enough attention is impossible and combats are just a mess
Must... sacrifice... the kobold...
yo am new where find campaign
how commonly do they accept new players
Somewhat common
Most official campaigns are 4-6 players
3 or 7 are uncommon numbers, anything below 3 or over 7 is too bare bones/crowded
You should stick with whatever player count the campaign suggests though, unless you're homebrewing one
My preteen son and his friends want to start playing. I have wanted to play for years but am unable to secure a group that meets at times that work for my busy schedule.
I have been trying to learn to DM and have tried once (I feel unsuccessfully). (I forgot about saving rolls and upset some people 😅🥲)
My son and his friends have asked that I DM for them, but I don't feel qualified until I can play more than the 1 game I've ever played (a one shot that I had so much fun with). I need to play to better understand the rules but I can't find where to do that in the very rural area I live it. The game seems to have died down around my area. Any advice?
You can play online, but i think you can start with DMing! Might not be the best option, but if i could do it, i'm sure you can too!
Is there anywhere I can buy the caves of chaos adventure digitally? I bought the physical edition but hasn't arrived yet and I'd like to prepare
That's the conclusion I was coming to as well. Do you have any suggestions on a starter quest for a new DM with no play experience?
A great one is the first 2 chapters of Lost Mines of Phandelver
Perfect! I have that one! Thank you! 😁
Also nice for continuing, because chapters 1-2 work as a standalone adventure where you can finish the entire book if it's fun
My 2nd character is human from the outside but fully-technological from the inside, what species/race best suits him? (I doubt im gonna use any of the tech parts of him since he utilized that part of him as a weapon in his 'past life' and not in this new comfortable one, so i feel like just a variant human is best)
Variant human or custom lineage would probably be easiest to work with. Maybe a reflavored warforged. Is this concept something you’ve cleared with your DM? Some might chafe at that level of technology in their world.
Hi I’m new here! I’m looking for tips on where to start! I have already created my character sheet, can you recommend some campaigns for me (that do not require voice chat)
#find-a-game is gonna give you the instructions on how to use the group-finding channels. You will likely have to re-do your character based on what rules and content your DM allows.
Hello, I'm new to DnD but concept is well known to me. What is holding me back is character sheet that I need to prepare for DM. Sheet is simply confusing to me. I have alrdy prepared character and he's bio, might need a few more things to add, but I would like to talk with someone with expirience (I'd like a feedback from exp player/dm) before I let my character go into the adventure. Thanks in advance.
I am very new how do i level up
just beat monsters in campaigns is the main way to get exp
But how do you know how much xp
I’m at work but I can try and help you as much as possible. Feel free to msg
So first of all, it depends on the DM if you're even using XP. If you do, here is the table of how much you need:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CharacterAdvancement
If you wonder how leveling up works in general, that section I linked goes over the details.
give me your specific questions and i'll help, what's wrong?
it will say underneath there senses and languges
I prepared character bio, race, class, background, history, age and stats. I'm not sure if there's something else missing for sheet or not and the sheet is 3 pages long and there are some things to be filled up that I'm not sure I would fill properly. So my question is not actually a question, more like a request for help from someone with expirience to help me fill the sheet for DM. Without the sheed he cannot put me into the story.
@ivory grove
Sure I'm a new player
Do you guys have room for 1 more?
Yeah go ahead
Sure
added
Accepted
All good?
Hi so I’m new to dnd and me and my friends want to play it, and I want to be the DM is there any chance someone could explain the most important things to me? And tell me basically what to do? I’m new and REALLY confused so if anyone wants to text with me and is okay with me getting confused and asking questions I’d really appreciate it 🫶
The basic rules have a lot of general advice for new DMs!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
Hi! I am new to D&D and want to tap into the wealth of wisdom from this group on creating a character. My character is based on a kitsune, a in popular Japanese folklore, is a fox or fox spirit which possesses the supernatural ability to shapeshift or bewitch other life forms. So, in which class should I place my character?
Druid probably since they have Wild Shape, allowing them to morph into animals they've seen prior.
You could also do sorcerer if you're wanting the kitsune route with the inherit magic present within them by existing.
You’d probably want a bard or wizard with a focus on enchantment magic, or possibly a trickster cleric if you want to go a more deific direction.
I'm just new looking for a DM I'm kinda new been part of 2 campaigns
Thank you

Try owlbear rodeo for maps Instead, you can drag and drop any token or map quick and easy
Just made my character on DND beyond
Nice! Feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion for feedback
Otherwise you can use #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group to play with!
I'm can't post it unless I post the link
Don't need subscriptions? Look, I have a very bad currency
Owlbear rodeo is free to use, I'm running many games with it
Is there anywhere I can buy the caves of chaos adventure digitally? I bought the physical edition but hasn't arrived yet and I'd like to prepare
Do you mean you're looking for where/how to procure maps?
Links are fine as long as you post with context
I'm not sure you can buy that on its own digitally. To be absolutely clear, I would ask in #ddb-support, as I'm not sure what you can/can't buy digitally there for Heroes of the Borderlands.
Yes yes, And also other Map websites so i can put Homebrew Tokens
Also check the pinned message in #dnd-maps for useful tools and resources for making maps

The bot post above has lots of helpful resources that can get you started. If you click on the link to the "Basic Rules" chapter 1 is how to play the game and chapter 2 is how to make a character
thanks so much
I have hundred of hours in bg3, and I’ve started a campaign once that never really went anywhere past one session, but I’d like to start taking part properly in full campaigns and I’m not sure where’s best to start because I’m a bit nervous to join a game with nobody I know in case I do things wrong
Generally speaking, look for a campaign geared toward other starting players since the DM will expect the learning curve. Also find a campaign that starts at lvl 1 because that limits the scope of what you will encounter and what your character can do, keeping it more manageable to learn as you progress.
For example, learning what a lvl 1 rogue can do is easier than learning all lvl 5+ skills and subclass stuff. By the time you work your way from 1-3 you ought to have played that character for ~5-10+ hours? And hopefully have a better feel for the game in general.
My favorite map-makers who offer stuff for free are Dyson Logos, 2-Minute Tabletop, Neutral Party, Dr. Mapzo, Angela Maps, and Reddit (r/dndmaps and r/battlemaps).
You can also make maps with tools like Inkarnate. Here's a bunch of options (https://www.dnd-compendium.com/dm-resources/maps-map-tools).
I use Owlbear Rodeo to host maps and tokens myself; the free tier is enough for me and my group.
Thanks for the advice!
Two other things to help - fundamentally, don't assume anything works just like BG3. There are lots of "that would be cool if..." features that don't translate to the TTRPG. And the best approach when unsure is just to ask "can I do this? what would I need to roll?"
Totally, I got into d&d before playing bg3, so I am aware it’s not the exact same. It did help familiarise me with some of the basics of how it works though. Thanks!
Yeah BG3 was awesome, also got hundreds of hours in it and it'll remain in my top 3 for a long time. I'm really glad for how many people it's introduced to the game too.
just got my first session yesterday, was pretty fun

Hello there, new fellow adventurers! 👋🏻 😃
Hello!!
I used to watch my older cousin play d&d when I was around 12, and I remember they let me play with them sometimes, and to be honest I only remember some stuff, but I remember it was really really fun
I wanna get into it again, but I'm super nervous to get started

this is awesome thank you so much

Do not worry! Learn as much as you can on your way, ask anything here, and get ready for adventure
.
well, i'm pretty proud of my DM efforts. last night discord was abuzz immediately after the game i ran with a bunch of the newbies. seems a few of them want to just jump into games and started arranging times and dates and everything with the other DMs from the same event. and it was like 11 PM. they just couldn't wait
Hello :)
I am quite new to dnd. I played it myself with friends a bit but i never found a party where i can play reguarly and other people dont tfoll around all the time. So i want to maybe find people that i can do that with here :/
Thank you!!
I've been wanting to get into d&d for a while and I'm excited to learn
Welcome! You can use our Looking For Game channels to try and find a group to play with. Read #find-a-game to learn how to use those channels.
d&d sounds kinda intimidating to me because the first time I tried to get into it people were very intense about math and combat, I'm more of a story and rp oriented gal
I hope I can find something that fits me
The math is generally rolling a die and adding any bonuses/modifiers (so simple addition/subtraction) and only needed if the Dungeon Master calls for it (like if your character wants to attack an enemy, the DM would ask you to make an attack roll).
honestly, see if you can find someone running The Joys of Extradimensional Space (from the Candlekeep Mysteries book). It is objective and exploration based instead of "beat the final boss". and can be run in like 3 to 4 hours. it does have combat, and puzzles too.
Yeah. Was the same for me it was only about the combat. Dont get me wrong i love the combat of dnd. But i wanted to imerse into rp aswell bjt it was just impossible with my friends :(
I think I said it wrong uhh how can I say this- The group I found at the time was very much focused on power scaling and they would try to abuse rules to extremes and bend edges to make their characters impossibly strong, I felt so out of place
Thank you for the info. I will look and read into it :)
Hello I wanna join a group next to me but I'm kinda scared the members will be older then me
Any tips

Uhm. That's less a D&D issue and more of a social/cultural/legal issue and we can't really do much to help with that as so much depends on where you live, who you know, and the laws where you live.
But D&D can be played by kids (I play with my children), can be played in mixed age groups (works best when everyone knows each other in real life), and really can be played by anyone (rules may need to be adjusted for age level).
So I'd suggest getting to know the people who are playing near you, asking questions about their D&D games in an appropriate way that shows you're interested, and maybe, just maybe, they'll invite you to sit in on one of their games and maybe even join the group.
It's like any social activity - go meet folks, get to know them, build a level of trust, do activity together.
Is there anything worth buying besides the dice and books cus I already got those
Anything else that you need to enhance the fun for your game I guess.
Really all you need to play D&D is rules, an adventure to run (could be homebrew), a dungeon master to help direct the game and make rulings, players, character sheets (some way to track characters), dice (digital or physical), and a way to communicate.
What things increase rhe fun

hello
anyone willing to help me fill out a character sheet in fairly new to D&D and dont want to mess this up
Wouldn’t mind meeting some new people and help me figure out how some things work
… I know some stuff like races and classes !
Hallo!
Hi!
I believe I qualify as new people
Indeed you do 😼
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
okay!! tysm for helping me out
Specifically the chapters “Playing the Game” and “Character Creation”
those are definitely the areas i gotta figure out lol
And again, if you ever have any questions we encourage you ask them here! Happy to help.
We’ll either answer them or send you to a channel where folks can give you better advice
Tyyyy
So far I've taken an interest in making a human rogue assassin 😛
Nice!
How do I play D&D
Sorry Im new, I dont know how to play yet, I just know some basics
Also you don't have to worry about every box on the sheet, if you follow the character creation rules in the Players Handbook or Basic Rules they'll tell you what to write down one section at a time, and what part of the book to read at each step
So if you take it step by step it's not very intimidating at all, and by the end of your first character you'll have a deep understanding of what every box on that sheet means

I don't understand a lot of what this stuff means tbh
...
in the online character creation
I was gonna leave it and do it later lolol
I am watching this video on spell casting, and I have a question about spell duration. When it says, for example, 10 minutes, I assume it is 10 real session minutes, no?
I low-key hate the character builder.
Maybe try starting with
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
oh tysm
Yeah thats how i have it
how should i document my characters things should i print a character sheet
No 😅
It's in game time. So if you're not in combat it will last as long as the DM says 10 minutes lasts
Thx
Ohhhhhhhhhhh
Real?
If you're in combat each turn is 6 seconds. So a 1 minute spell lasts 10 of your turns
That's good to know
Dude, i have so many questions on how stuff works lol
No problem brochacho
Hello
For example if you cast a 10 minute spell and after the combat your characters journey 3 days across the mountains in a montage. That might only be 5 minutes of game time but in the story that spell ended days ago haha
And vice versa, you could run only 2 minutes of combat in like 3 hours of game time
Guess that makes mo re sense
But the 10 minute spell would continue to last across however many turns you deserve
Keep asking haha people here are very helpful and love talking about D&D
Hey
For example, if I, as a DM say that the players are following a sorcerer who left a trail of magic, how do I know when to let the players know that they found the trail with, idk, detect magic?
It's a very specific example, but I am a bit curious
As I will be the one trying to dm to my friends who have also never touched dnd
I have NEVER played before i can’t lie
We are on the same boat lol
I just took the mcat tho and I want real hobbies now
I am watching a lot of videos of this Ginny Di girl and currently reading the rules on the dnd beyond website
You'll have to decide! There are a few ways you can resolve a problem like this.
- If the magic is visible to the naked eye, they might be able to follow it without a check, or with a perception check
- If the magic is not visible, but can be felt, a perception or arcana check might be applicable
- If the magic is completely undetectable except with a Detect Magic spell, then you can have an NPC or other source inform the players that they'll need to rely on that method. They'll need to have the spell though, obviously
This is why it's usually recommended for new DMs to run pre-written adventures to get their toes wet and get plenty of good examples on how these kinds of challenges are run.
Ok, that makes sense
Yeah, D&D and how you use it's mechanics is totally up to you!
So having knowledge of the detect magic spell is very useful for a puzzle like this, detect magic might be one solution to how to track the sorcerers.
That is my plan. I guess the best way to learn is by actually doing it
The more you understand the world and lore the more you can force your players to use their abilities, but you can always make stuff up from the very beginning!
I know the basic rules of dnd but not any of the very complex stuff and I would like to know what to buy to increase the enjoyablitity
You don't need to buy anything to enjoy DnD. Are you playing online or in person?
I'm curious what you feel like you don't know
Online
The basic rules already have all the major spells and classes and lots of monsters and magic items. That's more than enough lore to dive in with your players
Then especially you won't need much to play. Your DM will be providing most of the visuals etc, so you don't need to worry about purchases.
And the basic rules have every important rule. You can play the game forever without buying anything
By the way, how confusing is the 2024 version of the DM guide?
I mainly just sont know how the items and equipment and how they know which weapons and attacks do what and also the spells and what they do
Probably the least confusing DMG ever released
Sweet
My personal opinion is that it's leaps and bounds more coherent, better laid out, and written for the new DM.
If you've read the PHB and want to DM there is literally no better place to turn. It's probably the best DM advice ever put to paper
