make sure to also pick a sub class if you are level 3
yep College of Lore all the way baby
The bard can use a rapier, just not add their proficiency unless they go a specific route to be proficient in it.
issue is encounters are generally balanced around assuming you have PB added to attack rolls
so it is highly recomended that if you are going to be attacking you use something you are proficient in
you could use a rapier but you're going to end up doing more damage with a dagger because you can actually get your hits in
Yes that's true, I'm just saying you don't need to be proficient to use something, although it is better when you are proficient.
you;'d have to take the martial weapon training feat, or eldritch adept taking pact of the blade, but yes
or multiclass into fighter or warlock or something
I think I'll just rely on spellcasting, but it is handy in emergencies
I'd recommend going with taking the feat route if this is your first character/time play
College of Lore bards aren't meant to be heavy melee fighters anyway. I think that's a fine plan.
After maxing out my charisma, which ability scores should I invest in next?
I already have 19 Charisma anyway
For a Bard? Constitution
Constitution is probably a good one to go for
sounds good, thanks
Hello!! I’m a noob to DND. I used to play on/off from middle school to high school then kinda got busy with life after becoming an adult. Now, my boyfriend and I would LOVE to start campaigns and stuff together. Just haven’t been able to find anyone to play with. Anywhooo, that’s all I gotta say. I look forward to potentially finding a fun group to play with 😊😊
If you haven't already look at the #find-a-game channel and go from there.
Or consider Adventurers League
Thank you! I didn’t explore all the channels yet. I’ll have to do that. I’ll definitely need a lot of guidance at first. But I catch on fast at least.
HEello everyone ,I am new to actual D&D , I made a party with my friends and I am te DM. It is very exciting and i love making up stories(just enriching them at this point). I have a lot of trouble with one of my players ,who is basically TOO enthousiastic which I love , but he interferes with his party members desicions in and out of combat. He doesnt give me time to react as an npc (I Can almost see him pushing SKIP SKIP SKIP to the convorsation)or even pass the necessary information and vibe of the scene , he is cutting in all the time and its like we are in a rush. The game is starting not to be fun for me as I feel like I am a teacher , or just there for them to play. As a dm I want them to have fun , but if im going to keep dming i need to have fun too. Any ideas how i can handle someone who looks like he wants to play all the characters and is cutting in too much? How can i lead and help all of them to SIT AND LISTEN and then decide themselves what they wanna do . Thanks!
This is a pretty complex question. I'd recommend asking it over in the #dm-discussion channel. We can give you advice over there.
thanks !i ll repost it there!
hello, I think I'm pretty much done with my character sheet(which is in pdf form) can anyone check it out and confirm if it's all done or if I did anything wrong?
Sure thing. We have #character-discussion for that purpose.
what the difference between a sorcerer, a wizard, a warlock and an artificer?
Wizard - Gained magical abilities from studying
Sorcerer - Gained magical abilities from a parent/ancestor, etc
Warlock - Gained magical abilities by signing a contract with a powerful being
Artificer - Makes magical tools as their way of using magic
quick paladin question, can a longsword and a shield be wielded simultaneously? according to my DnDBeyond setup, I start with those two.
I chose a Shortsword as one of my Weapon Mastery choices, because I figured that'd most likely go with shields, but I don't seem to have one in my inventory
Though I do start with javelins which I picked
not sure if that's related or not
Yes
Yes, you can wield a longsword and a shield together, as a longsword can be used with 1 or 2 hands
siiiick, thanks!!
the weapon mastery is something different, that in a way is like a bonus to the weapon if you have mastery in it.
ohhh gotcha gotcha.
and the Mastery doesn't seem to mention a long or short rest at all, other than allowing me to change the weapons I picked.
Can I apply Sap with a Longsword on every attack I land with one?
Your training with weapons allows you to use the mastery properties of two kinds of weapons of your choice with which you have proficiency.
Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can change the kinds of weapons you chose.
Your training with weapons allows you to use the mastery property of Longswords:
Sap. If you hit a creature with a Longsword, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn.
That seems kinda broken if so
I'd say yes because of how it's worded
Sap does apply to every hit you make with the longsword, but disadvantage doesn't stack, and sap only applies disadvantage to the target's next attack. So even if you hit them 10 times in a row, they still only make 1 attack with disadvantage
Oh dam fighters can't change weapons mid combat
ohhhh sure sure, that makes sense
yes they can
HELL YEAH
The one reason to play a martial over a caster: Switching to your second weapon is faster than mathing over your spell slots.
Cantrips are always available though and can be ranged, a weapon isn't always available.
Each has their own ups and downs.
I think they were trying to make a joke
ah well, wouldn't be the first time I've missed a written joke.
yeah it's the equivalent of "switching to second gun is faster than reloading"
does Consitution affect AC or just hit point total?
It doesn't affect your AC at all, unless you're a Barbarian. It affects your hit points and your Constitution Saving Throws.
Any recommendation for a first time player thats nerveous as hell 😭
Im scared that i won't be in the character that accurately
No worries! Even in the most veteran DnD games, no one expects players to be locked in and in character 100% of the time.
Honestly, there's absolutely nothing wrong with even saying "My character, Jim the wizard, tries to convince the guard to let him through the gate." instead of trying to roleplay.

How does starting equipment work? Like if your wizard starts with an arcane focus, does it have to be a quarterstaff or can you change it out to fit their lore
Your class defines what starting equipment you get, but every class has the option to get starting gold instead which you can use to buy the exact equipment you want if the predetermined options don't fit what you are looking for
THanks dude, i appreciate it
Arcane Focus' is categorised as a Crystal, Rod, Orb, Staff, or Wand (none of which have a damage component technically) and must be held in hand to channel magic with basically.
And it's DND. Technically everything is flexible. Having their staff (that they're definitely not gonna use) as their focus is basic rule adjustments that nobody can really argue with.
No rule adjustments needed. A staff is a focus.
If a selection says "an arcane focus", then a staff is a valid option.
Note, however, that a Wizard's starting equipment specifies an arcane focus (staff), so it actually must be a staff by default.
In order to pick a different option, such an orb, the wizard would have to purchase it using their starting gold.
I was planning to make my wizard start with a crystal amulet, because it would be much more easily concealed than a staff
this is so silly
sure, you can buy it with gold
it makes sense for you to then choose option B for starting equipment: that is, instead of any equipment you start with 55 GP
just don;t forget to buy a spellbook too
Generally, arcane focuses are things that need to be held to be used, but if you DM allows it then its fine
How to make myself look more interesting/presentable when submitting google doc answers as a new player? (to get accepted for campaigns ofc)
I think her point was that they are more easily concealed when not in use.
Is there a place where I can find a group to play with

Hey everyone hows it going... I've always wanted to get into dnd. I also want and been looking to find people to link up with.. any advise? I've been very nervous since I do not know all the online terminology and I don't want mess up anyone's game... 🙃
“Link up” as I’m finding a game? I recommend reading #find-a-game , and looking through dnd beyond forums, reddit or roll20.
Welcome! You should check out the Free Rules on D&D Beyond. It'll help you get the gist of the game. Even if you don't know everything (even the dungeon masters usually need to stop to check once in a while), plenty of tables are patient and happy to help you get settled in a game.

Thanks I try it out.. happy hoildays

Is there a monster sheet for the occultist because I would like to create a campaign where the adventurers discover a curse and find out that it is caused by occultists?
there are various cultist stat blocks, in the monster manual
Some free creatures that could fit here: #dm-discussion message
Thank you
Another idea might be to take any common monster with a ranged attack (like a goblin) and instead of it using a shortbow, have it conjure darts of lightning or fire. Change the damage type and description, leave the rest alone, now they're some kind of cultists.
Yo so im confused because my Dm recommended me to play as a Grung Druid since it best matched my idea of a character, but I can't find this race anywhere and my Dm is not responding
the Grung as a playable species can be found in "One Grung Above"
thank you
in personality characteristics: ideals, what am I supposed to place there? got no idea what they are
Their supposed to be like one thing you believe in, like order is important that change is important
like what sort of things do u believe in that aren't religion
can I have examples
one of my ideals is that respect is earned not given
Tradition should never be broken
thas cool but they're starting to sound just like cool phrases
yea
i'll try to think of something
how i think of ideals is its not religion related really
If you're using the 2014 rules, every background should have some suggestions to choose from
But it can really be as simple as things like "family over everything"
If you have access, look at the backgrounds from basically any 5e dnd book from before 2024.
Think about what sort of convictions your character has
I am gonna buy it my only issue is the fact that it says its going to be a digital book but then proceeds to say arriving on the 25th
Lol
Hey all. A friend is hoping for a DnD set for Christmas (idk which one) and since neither of us have ever played DnD before, i thought I would try find out what it's all about and maybe learn a few things regarding how to play and all that.
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
That's a lot to read huh?
lol. I'll keep reading so
Q. By "First two chapters", do yoou mean 'Playing the Game' and 'Creating a Character'?
Yes
okay, thanks
Ok that lil one is adorable
also like bookmark the rules glossery at the end
don't have to read it but it is very useful to have on hand
i think i'm going cross-eyed and i haven't even reached proficiency yet
Take your time
Same
lol
it feels like english isn't my first language
i'm genuinely forgetting how to read
i think that the story can change very quickly since the rules seem quite vague
i understand how dice work
i get the concept of the 6 abilities/traits
that's about it
i think so
Do you know some classes?
only because i played the guided minigame through the discord
paladin, wizard, cleric, fighter, rogue
i'm unsure on how ability scores are determined
There’s a few methods to pick them
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
What section have you read up to so far? The 3 official methods of score generation will come as part of the character creation section
They’re also above, courtesy of Nugget
i'm near the start of the proficiency heading
i think i get it. you determine them not in the moment but when you create your character?
Yup!
Often a lot of questions in part 1 are answered in part 2, imo
part 2 being character creation?
Yup
okay
Question. Are there any resources available for lady players to find one another to play games with if some of us are scarred from male dominating gaming spaces? Especially for D&D?
Possibly but due to our server rules we do not allow LFG posts to discriminate on anything but age range.
That's why I'm asking for outside resources.
You could see if some of the D&D communities being advertised in #looking-for-community allow for advertising of such games.
Okie dokie. I appreciate you.
Hello everyone
greeting
I'd say to check out chapter 2, character creation. Its a bit easier to start getting into d&d imo when you start to understand how making a character works
youll have to eventually learn the chapter 1 stuff, but that can be easily walked through in your first combat when you do start playing in a campaign
assuming your DM has some experience
they won't
welp, then take your time reading through chapters 1 and 2 lol
I say you don't start one chapter 1 and rather start on chapter 2 and then on until you finish the "Character Orgins" chapter, if your DM in not expierence then read through it but DON'T READ THOSE EXAMPLES, they just waste time
But thats my opinion :3
which examples?
Can you hold on to heroic inspiration?
Do you have to Ready to have the opportunity to react?
- Yes
- Not for opportunity attacks
but yes for reactions?
you spend your reaction to do an Opportunity attack when it gets triggered, ye
so you need to have your reaction up to do so
Hello. How is it going, everybody?
and do you have to have used the 'Ready' action in order to make a reaction?
no
hello
The Ready Action just lets you hold an action, given some trigger, that you can then spend your reaction to use at some point before your next turn
right
Just testing the waters, first-time player. Not even first time, never played a game before or anything.
Good to have you
same here
do you know how to get started?
Somewhat. I watched a Ginny D video on how to get started

Noice! This server has a bunch of resources when it comes to learning d&d and even finding a table to play with
Yeah I also did the introduction
Alright I found them, it is this stufffile: ///C:/Users/matth/OneDrive/Pictures/Snip.png
that the server gives you. The minigame was pretty fun. I got thrown in jail for backtalking the guards
Its like where they say
Jared: Philip do a Perception Check
lmao. i survived afte running to a rooftop with the book and smashing her on the head with a mace. then i retired
Reactions are generally triggered abilities that can be optionally used when a certain thing happens
readying an action is just tying your normal action to a trigger, which may or may not happen that turn cycle, but allows you to time things properly
i don't think the file came through right
I was a Paladin Of Bahamut, so I thought if I told them to stop doing bad things it would carry some weight. It did not.
If you want to explore a bit more, i'd recommend taking a look through the first two chapters of the free basic rules. You can find them here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
okay, so like if i said; "I want to shoot an arrow. But not until they ride past on their horses" kinda thing?
i chose cleric
its a decent amount of reading, but it includes all the basic stuff you use to play in a campaign
Thank you. I read a bit of the Drowned Sailors book, but I'll be honest, a lot went right over my head.
You smashed someone over the head with a mace as a cleric? Lmao.
yeah LOL
Or like, I will wait to attack until player X has had their chance to attack (as they might possibly knock the enemy prone with their topple mastery which would give you advantage on the melee attack roll and that player's turn is after yours but before the enemy's)
i see. Thanks for helping me understand
and if you feel youll learn better by doing rather than reading #find-a-game has a bunch of info on looking for active tables to play at
or "i will hold my action and will attack them if approached'
though I will say knowing the basic rules will definitely help you find people to play with more easily
any scenario where you want to wait and see if something happens or where an ally moving first would benefit your action if you delay it
alright. Thanks again
I also checked for any live/in-person sessions in my area, and there are a couple. Would you say I should first study up a bit more and learn the rules of the game, or go there for a first-person experience?
always best to try and read those first two chapters of the free rules first if possible
I will always recommend to read a bit before jumping in. Even having a rough idea of things like Actions, Rounds/Turns, Skills, Proficiency, etc. will make learning on the spot much easier
then maybe sit in on a game so you can ask questions or watch a video of a game being played to get a bit more comfortable if you don't want to jump right into things
find a server that hosts games and ask if you can listen in / spectate the VTT
or see if one of your LGSs hosts beginners events where they go over the rulebook and maybe play a basic module
Cool. Thank you, Runtime_error, and Meabhy. I watched a few of the Critical Role sessions on YouTube, but some other people online said that they play at a very advanced/experienced level, so it might be a bit much for a total beginner. Those guys are really funny
spectating a game can be very good for getting an idea of how the group plays, big recommend to do that if possible as well
If you end up having any specific questions about basic rules or character creation, feel free to ask here
lots of people are open to help
also there's many different styles of play
you could have grindy dungeon crawlers, or exploration heavy games, games with lots of puzzles, mysteries, RP heavy games, intrigue, all sorts of stuff
Generally you'll have a mix of several of these but the ratios will depend on the DM and the campaign/module being played
About character creation, what exactly sets a baseline? Like I know some editions give you a set number which you mix and match, but what if you want to tweak those? Like what If i make a Goliath that spent most of its life in fighting pits or a grand coliseum? How do I make it fit with the background of my character without breaking the game?
That’s completely fine for a character
A baseline for your ability scores you mean? Your stats?
Many people don’t even have their background fit, they just use it for the mechanics
Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.

there are 3 popular methods to generate stats, there is the Standard Array, Point Buy, and Rolling
yep, they are mentioned above
It can differ from table to table, some GMs (game masters) will have more custom methods, or different variations of the popular 3 methods
For practice characters, using standard array or point buy is recommended
Yeah, I was reading the site you gave me (thank you by the way), and it does talk about it, but I guess my question is a bit more nuanced
can you elaborate what you mean?
Well on (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character) it talks about how a background can affect a character's ability scores.
Yep, in the latest 2024 rules, your characters background dictates which ability scores you can further improve in character creation
Then it talks about the 3 methods that some of the other folks were talking about
Oh, the rules update. I forgot they do that.
Indeed, you do one of the three methods then add your ability score increases from you background (in 2024)
In 2014, the additional stats would come from your species
The backgrounds specifically are balanced so that the each background can only potentially boost 3 of the 6 ability scores.
For example, the Acolyte Background lets you choose to add points to Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma. Specifically, it lets you put +2 in one and +1 in another, or +1 in each of the 3
each background has that setup for ability score increases, the difference between them being which 3 ability scores it lets you pick from
However, as some backgrounds and their respective origin feat may not be what you’re looking for in a character, some people simply select their background based on the mechanics. For example, my monk has the Sailor background for its unique feat, but the guy hasn’t seen the ocean in his life.
A lot of this will depend on your GM. Some GMs allow for custom backgrounds, others will be more strict and ask you to choose from the existing ones
Indeed
Its also good to keep in mind that the Free Rules only list 4 backgrounds, but there are many more in the core rulebooks
so if you end up playing with a GM that has access to a PHB (Player's Handbook) they can give you a bunch more options to choose from
Cool. So let's say for my aforementioned Goliath, I use the Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) and have them as a barbarian. Then I add ability modifiers 12 +1 to the Strength category. Is that correct? or at least not bad?
Also, sorry Im taking so long to respond, im flipping through my tabs and reading the rulebook right now
Another thing to keep in mind. Your characters mechanical Background, does not necessarily have to map exactly to your characters backstory
Flavor is free
, pick whichever one works best mechanically and just write your own backstory
By backstory, i mean whatever you write down about your characters past, before they started adventuring
the Background is just a mechanical representation for what your characters backstory gives them at the start of their adventure
Thats one way to do it. For a barbarian, I would recommend putting the 15 or 14 in your Strength, depending on what weapon you plan to use
and then putting a +2 into that from your background, if you can, and a +1 to whatever other stat you want
You could go a Strength or Dexterity focused barbarian, both are valid. Constitution would be your next most important stat for combat
Thanks for the info! Wow, this is probably the most help I've ever gotten on Discord.
Dex barbarians don’t get the damage benefit of rage btw
Unless I’m misremembering
Yep correct, Barbarians benefit greatly from Strength because their Rage works with strength, thats mb
So yeah, for a barbarian, in general, I would recommend a Strength and Constitution focus
So if were to use your stat spread, their recommendation for your stats is 17, 14, 13, 12, 10 ,8 with one more ability score to go somewhere (I’d put it in constitution)
or to be more specific:
Str: 15+2 (17)
Dex: 14
Con: 13+1 (14)
Int: 12
Wis: 10
Cha: 8
where the +2 and +1 come from your background
of course, your free to change it up as you wish, its your character
thats just the general idea of how setting up a characters ability scores works
Cool. Thank you guys again for all the help. Im gonna go read the rulebook and hopefully get a bit more info.
Have fun!
It was very nice to talk to all of you folks today. Hope to see you again.
Hope to see you around
yep no worries, our recommendation for the stat makeup is an example of optimizing for your classes strengths, but you can always make your character how you wish
good luck!
Thanks! See you guys around

How much armor class is good for a level 1 paladin?
With your starting armor, you're usually looking at 16. 18 if you strap on a shield, which is fairly usual unless you really like your two-handed weapons.
Hey, I’ve got the Heroes of the Borderlands starter set, and my group is interested in trying the rotating DMs idea, but we’re not sure what that would actually look like in practice. Does anyone have any experience with what that is like practically?
So for the Keep in particular I'd set it up like one shots where you either go out to the caves or into the wilderness. The caves work especially well, because one DM doesn't have to read all to run just one of them.
At the end of each session, the characters return to the keep. Then you have a good setup to head out again in the next session with a new DM.
The thing I’m having trouble with conceptually is balancing the player choice presented at the start (“where do you want to go”) with the modularity. Is that player freedom something you just have to compromise on if you want to have rotating DMs, since they will each only be reading part of the booklet?
Somewhat. But you can address it by making the choice before the new DM needs to prepare.
So have all players that will be in the next session decide what they want to do.
"We will go into the wilderness and then afterwards explore this specific cave."
Okay thanks!
what is the 1st dice we throw after we rolled for Initiative called?
we roll for damage after that...
Most likely an attack roll?
what/who decides the roll is good enough for the attack to even be done/cast ?
The DM asks what your character does - if you decide to attack the DM will ask for an attack roll.
If that D20 roll plus any modifiers and bonuses is equal to or higher than the target's armor class (AC), that is a hit.
once i got hit with a... you dont do anything (wanted to cast Bless as the cleric)
i believe i rolled a 14
There are some features that can be used as a reaction to being hit that can either improve your character's armor class or soak up the damage dealt.
is my DM dumb/was distracted... or i literally just don't cast it
Bless is guaranteed, you yourself shouldn’t have to roll anything to cast it. Seems like a DM mistake.
i believe that is indeed the case
That, or you were in some sort of antimagic field
Yeah short of the spellcasting being nullified for some reason (antimagic field, counterspell)
nah, it was a session for beginers.
i belive i messed up by rolling
and he didn't hear me
And in that case it simply wouldn't work - it doesn't call for a roll at all
(Just to expand)
THANKS 🙏
Hey guys. I’ve never played before but I want to get into DND bc some guys recommended to me at university. I know the basic rules and how to play, etc but I wanted to try my hand at making my first character, but I was told to not make my first character until I join a game and work with a DM to make a character that fits their vibe.
What should I do as I don’t have too much time for a campaign, but I wanna try to make a character with lore and everything, etc?
You can make a practice character, or many. I have like 20.
When you do find a campaign tho, make a character specifically for that game.
Two of these have like, 1000 words
That’s what I thought I could do. Thanks so much.
Worst comes to worse, you can use them as NPC’s if you ever DM.
Oooo that sounds cool!!
HOW does "Disciple of Life PHB, pg. 60" works ?
It makes your healing spells more powerful just giving at least an extra 3hp to whoever's being healed.
Edit: this is ontop of whatever healing the spell itself does.
Hey hey!
I'm like REALLY new to D&D, I was introduced by a friend, who plays with the 2014 rulesets, and I purchased the newer 2024 Player handbook, monster guide and Dungeon Masters guide.
Previously I've played Roleplay servers on games like Arma and GTA, and love to roleplay.
Thought I would join the discord here, and find some other like-minded individuals and/or find some games to join and learn as I go (This is my preferred method of learning).
I mainly prefer to play a ranger/rogue character that has a small ability to heal, to help out in skirmishes they may find themselves in - Probably a generic playstyle, I don't know - But hey, I'm here to find out and meet new people 🙂
Ranger is good for that.
Welcome to the official D&D Discord server (ran by Wizards of the Coast, the company behind D&D). Feel free to ask questions here (or in an appropriate channel - see #channel-guide to see all our many channels for specific D&D topics)

Under this - Theres some campaigns which are "Free" - but when I click them, they don't add to the account, for example:
- Scions of Elemental Evil
It just opens a page on dndbeyond, for the DM's I assume - So does this mean I can only access this, if I know the URL?
Also what is the difference between:
- Maps
- Sigil
And was sigil not very well received?
Sigil is (was?) an online software known as a Virtual Table Top program, which allowed your party to see a battle map and their character sheets all online.
Unfortunately, for various reasons that we can't be 100% sure of, development of Sigil halted and eventually cancelled.
It was also 3D, as opposed to maps, which is 2D.
From what I hear (and suspected), the cancellation had much to do with the massively increased dev cost for 3D assets as opposed to what you can get done with 2D ones.
I'm in a campaign with a friend, and his family - I believe we may be using Maps, not too sure.
But my friend was saying about how there is a way to get Fog automatically move, as players move for example based on their vision, and so forth, but we couldn't figure it out
Maps can't do that afaik, it's a fairly basic vtt. Afaik you'd need roll20 or foundry for dynamic fog, though those two are more complicated.
Owlbear has some fog functionality, but not sure if it can do automatic vision calculation.
(ah I think you can do it by attaching a light source to a token)
The more complex the VTT, the more cool stuff you can get out of it! ...But also the harder it is to use!
Which is the most used? Or is it mainly preference?
It really is a preference. I'm even switching depending on my needs.
They also have different cost points. Roll20 is freemium and has been around for a long time, so often the first thing people try.
I recommend owlbear rodeo for new people, since it's simple to use and also freemium.
Also, worth noting, your DM will be the one to pick your VTT. So unless you're the DM, it's not something you need to worry about.
Do they integrate into your dndbeyond account? So you don't have to buy books/campaigns again?
I do plan on getting a group, in which we will alternate the DM based on the campaign we are doing - as we are mostly new - it gives us all a chance to see what it's like 🙂
I see a lot of roll20, d&dbeyond, and owlbear rodeo
Some have that capability. I'm not too familiar with other VTTs.
So is there a rating system for finding good games to join for example:
- RP element
- Competence of DM
- Seriousness
etc...
Or is it trial and error?
I seen a post in #looking-for-players where the DM said about only serious players, and not people that join, but then leave, as I can imagine that is quite frustrating, but makes me also wander whether it's a DM issue
There's not so much as a fixed system so much as personal preference
It's mostly trial and error. Your average advertisement isn't going to outright say "this is a bad game and I'm a bad DM" after all, right?
After some time looking, you'll start to get a sense of which posts look more reliable and which look more questionable, though. It's a learned skill.
hello
I guess this makes sense.
I suppose it would also hamper people who are new and learning, over actually being beneficially reliant
Hello, I want to ask a question
The question is how powerful can a necromancer character be in 5e
The vast majority of character builds are more or less of equal power level in DnD.
Unless the table is that serious, but almost none of them are
What if you do a drow wizard?
Shouldn't really effect the build all that much
Really?
Species generally have little impact on how a character plays. Most of the impact will come from the choices you make around your class.
Oh ok
Some legacy stuff from 2014 may have some species based detriments, but I'd just recommend not using those.
Thanks for the advice guys
Out of curiosity, are you trying to make an exceptionally strong character, or are you trying to avoid making a character that's too strong?
Is it possible to play the game with AI?
For example through dndbeyond, and allow an AI to be the DM?
So you can effectively play solo, or with others, if you can't find a game or DM - or just looking for a quick expedition/skirmish for example?
Theoretically yes, although probably not the best thing to do if you want immersion.
Not really. AI is a very poor excuse for a DM. LLMs make mistakes by definition and they can't keep track of extended narratives like a DM can.
In addition, much of the DND fun comes from the social interaction with others.
I think, with a ton of effort, you can DM for AI bots
That's probably the furthest you'll get, and even then it has flaws
Well, I find myself in an impossible crossroads.
Since I started playing two days ago - I just want to "Jump in and play".
But the #looking-for-players is usually a case of meeting up once a week (Which is fine btw) - But when I would just like, you know want to jump in and go on a roving expedition somewhere for a couple hours... I can't 🙁
The closest you're going to get to "jump in and play" d&d is conventions or organized play game nights at stores/etc
It's not a game that you can just pick up and play because it's social. It's designed for a group, not one person
Though some of the d&d based video games might help to scratch that itch
I played BG3 - Which others are there?
You could also consider pbp (play by post) games, so text based ones. They are less chunky time commitments.
BG1 and 2, though those are old rules
Check out Solasta. Less polished than BG3, but based on 5e rules.
I've heard good things about that one as well
That's the one I was forgetting the name of
My brain kept wanting to say Divinity instead
I'll take a look at Solasta
Iirc there is a new Solasta game coming out as well
For the dodge action it's says attack rolls made against you have disadvantage and you make dex saving throws, does this mean when an orc swings and axe down on you it has disadvantage and you make a dex saving throw to dodge?
No, those are two separate things
An orc attacking you with an axe would have disadvantage on the attack roll only.
If something else made you do a Dex save, such as a spell, you would have advantage on that
You don't make rolls to dodge other people's attack rolls
Thank you for the clarification
Hi everyone! Merry Christmas eve!
I am recently interested into DND and new to the game itself. My brother recommended me to meet some people here so.... yeah. How is everyone?
Welcome! Doing well!
Let us know if you have any questions or need any resources for DnD!
Thanks! I will definitely ask here. The initial part is finding a party of people that are newcomer friendly. I have been through Dndbeyond website and I have a general idea of how character creation works.

Sure thing! If you feel like you've got a good understanding of the Basic Rules, then the next step is finding a group. You can click the link in the bot post above to get your search started on this server.
Thank you!
i only just realized that in a day or two there's going to be an influx of many new people who likely just got the starter sets or books.
Probably, but then that's what we're here for
Hello everyone, and Merry Christmas Eve. Recently decided to actually get into DnD, however, I am very much a beginner. I am somewhat familiar with the basics (I think...).
I was just wondering, aside from making a character, learning how a DnD session usually plays, and the basic rules. What else should I look into before I try to find a group to play with?
tbh you're probably good with just the basic rules to start off, no one expects you to know everything.
Oh cool, I will research some stuff and see if I can find a beginner oriented group.
getting a solid understanding of the basics is all you need, everything else will come with practice and playing
Yeah, I think it would be more fun to learn more as I play.
This server doesn't seem so active
It’s relatively active
Maybe it's because of the holidays.
Good point
The majority of the users in this server are from North America, so it’s most active during those daylight hours. But yeah the fact that it’s Christmas Eve will make it much less active today and probably tomorrow too
Aww so I'm always active at the wrong time XD
There’s pretty much always some people active. It’s just a matter of when it’s the most active
hi guys im new to dnd and like i wanted to know how i join a campaign?

I’m trying to make a strong necromancer
I had ChatGPT DM for me as an experiment. It did an ok job but it runs into memory issues. It would forget details and I would have to remind it. It is not ideal but it can be useful to bounce ideas off occasionally. Keep looking for someone who can DM for you.
Hello everyone,
Is there a specific channel where I can ask for info about DnD campaigns?
I'm a brand new player, and I've just started my first DnD campaign with my friends. I'm totally a beginner and need a lot of clarification about the Artificer class. I would really appreciate it if there's anyone available to give me advice and help answer my questions.
Thanks in advance! 🙏 😁
Interesting, thanks
Hello there
Hello everyone!
how do I play a different class?
Are you wanting to change your discord server class thing?
yes
Go to channel and roles you should be able to change it there if it will let you.
For character stuff, #character-discussion is usually best. But if you have basic questions people will answer here if you ask them
Which channel would i ask if people want to join my campaign
Use the rules in #find-a-game to post #looking-for-players
Thank youuu
Hello there (again). I'm a newbie, and the reason I joined is that I recently heard, that there's a way to play D&D with other people without, having the actual boardgame equipment and other stuff as well, online and for free (?). I've never been interested in fantasyb genres, or D&D in general, but I always loved roleplaying, and I probably would love joining a game of D&D if only there was such a possibility. I've already created my character using D&D Beyond website, since it's literally my first experience of it ever. I might have made a couple of mistakes while doing so.
So I'd love someone to help me out with my character and the basics of the game. And maybe there will be a way for me to play with someone today, which I would be very happy about.
I will double this message to both #dnd-newcomers #ddb-support to increase the chance that someone will respond.
Hello! I was wondering how to get started with playing Dungeons & Dragons. I have no real experience yet and I've only seen a couple of videos about it.
If you have any advice on where to begin I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
Hello there!
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
@shell glen you too
Oh and for the record, don’t expect to find a game today. Getting into the game usually takes a bit
I think i did it
Appreciate that!
And considering it’s Christmas, many will be busy
Again, if you need help with anything specific, feel free to ask!
Am I allowed to create custom origins for my character (custom homeland and language)? Can I pick a custom musical instrument (non-common/national instrument), which isn't mentioned in the list, as a bard?
That’s a question for your DM, not me. I have no jurisdiction on what happens on other tables
I don't know any DM's yet... So idk who can I ask
Creating an entire homeland and language is gonna take extensive cooperation with the DM, but an instrument not on the list is pretty common.
Again, though, you’ll have to run that through your DM
To my knowledge I think that's considered Homebrew stuff and so it will depend on your DM. If they like the idea and it fits well into the campaign they are doing, then yeah it could work.
Bingo
Kind of a grey area
Unless its essential to the campaign plot its flavoring at best
Do it within reason of course, granted
Your character can't be from California and speaks English in the world of dnd
I mean, I know you probably won't be able to help me with that, but I still would love to share it. I made my character inspiring of eastern-european culture (mostly mixed polish and ukrainian), so i'd really love him to speak a custom language which is basically slightly customized ukrainian&polish, so basically it has a coherent, meaningful language that I can personally speak, transcribe, and translate, and not just an imaginable fantasy language. I also wrote in my character description that this language is an endangered one, as it was spoken only by a small number of people (character's homeland people), who were almost completely slaughtered by a raid of a "bandit clan" (if you can call it that) for already at least 20 years ago. So, character's homeland won't be mentioned often (except for him personally) or significantly influence the lore of the main events. (At least i think so. Hope it's not to selfish)
Actually, it’s fairly common for DM’s to tie character backstories into the main story, or have them as side plots
For example, the vampire lord in my setting is the hero of my paladin, fallen from grace and overcome by the vampiric curse
I will say tho, the language likely won’t come up very much
Il mostly use it in my songs, swearing or just inserted words to enrich and diversify the character's speech
And that's it
Oh that’s completely fine (at least for my table)! I’m bilingual, and if I have an Asian themed character sometimes I’ll have them mutter something under their breath in Vietnamese.
I even have a few pictures of him already, but damn I don't have the media allowance here yet.
I dont know how to call it properly sorry
#dnd-media maybe?
You could send it into #dnd-arts-and-crafts if you drew them
I drew a simplified sketch (I have only 1 month of drawing experience so I cant do better than messy sketches) and then used AI to create more detailed version
No AI generated stuff is allowed on this server
Hello friends
Hello
Greetings and salutations
Im wondering if anyone wants to show me the ropes in the new year. I’ve not played table top proper but I’ve done everything adjacent to it like playing every crpg from BioWare, owlcat, some larian games, and the like, so I wouldn’t be technically new just never had a dnd group before.
Ik there’s a specific channel but i figure ill ask here too
There are too many new players arriving on this server for people to give 1-1 instructions. But if you have specific questions, people will answer as they're available

Well the only question id have is how much rulebook reading do i have ahead of me? its not exactly the same but despite me never playing a ttrpg i own wraith and mummies rule books and those things are fun reads but in the case of dnd theres a lot more editions it seems.
I hope thats not a word salad because im pretty sure its not an faq
This server generally assumes the 2024 version of 5th edition unless otherwise specified
What’s the best class for a new player?
You don't have to memorize or read everything, but it's good to look over the basics for character building and turns, and what your specific character can do
You can start with any class, but ones without magic tend to be simpler
Ok. Thank you!
so if i wanna join a campaign in lf players do ijust send them my chracter sheet and tell them I wanna play?
There should be an attached thread you can reach out in, or follow any other instructions they have. I personally wouldn't send a character sheet unless they ask you to
Since they may want you to build a character under their guidance/for their specific story. Especially if they do rolled stats

Does anyone have a suggestion for which rulebook I should buy first? Like should I get the 2024 Dungeons Masters Guide or the 2024 Monster Manual?
You have the Player's Handbook already?
No, I have no books. Completely new to the game.
Ah. If you're going to buy one book, the PHB would be where to start. That said, you can get a lot of play out of the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
I would recommend trying it out first before you spend money to be sure you enjoy it!
Thank you!
Happy adventuring!
ThrifthBooks has a sale on the Players Handbook. it is $39.73 instead of the regular price $49.99. Just wanted to let you know.
Thanks for the info
Ofc
When you say you got d&d, which books or starter set did you get?
Guys can someone do a dnd game on beyond
Someone can, yes
Depends on the character. For some that would be fine
Not for a druid or cleric though, at minimum
Non wisdom spellcasters can work with 10 wisdom
Martials may appreciate 12 wisdom instead
what if i have 10 wisdom but i do insight and perception in skills
ok i think it doesnt matter if i roll a nat 1 anyway
okay can anyone help me me and my friends are planning to start a dnd party but im finding it impossible to choose a race. i dont wanna be too complicated but i just dont wanna be a elf or orc or wtv. i rlly wanna be a ghost or smth animal like
ummm ive thought about a rabbit? maybe a moth? im kinda debating animal bcs it was more my oh ghost is difficult god ig i might just be an animal instead
i think human goated since +1 to all stats
all i want as a ghost is to float and be transparent and like idk maybe smth else
i rlly love ghosts</3
Harengons exist
They’re rabbit/hare people
I can’t think of a ghost species
you got reborn ig
You can probably homebrew one with your DM
also the revenant from Pointy Hat, but only if the DM allows that
They can’t float, nor are they transparent-
Don’t tell me plasmoid is our best option
i might wait to do the ghost till i ahve a dm thats more practiced in dnd bcs if i actually am able to gather a party the dm would be mostly new
or find a game online
i could. for doing smth simpler what different animal like ones is there other than harengons. also what abilities would a harengon have
harengon is paid content
if you want to know you’ll have to buy it
chat
is it possible to be both the DM and the player?
like, me and 1 friend, since i want to be a player, no one wants to be a dm, i have worldbuilding skills
i become both a player and the dm
npcs are separate creatures basically
Just got kicked from a table lol
and i have schizophrenia
You can be the DM and a sidekick
not player? so sad
DM and player greatly ruins things on your end cuz as the DM you know what's about to happen
By then do you make a bad choice on purpose or do you always pick the right option as if you're basically cheating
uh
BPD?
i can geniunely not know and know things at the same time
maybe not have a world ready so i make up the world as i play or smth
#looking-for-players has DMs posting games.
Yeah uh I'm not sure having personality disorders help
As the sidekick you can help in combat but otherwise don't interact with the world (therefore no unfair advantage)
But if you insist why not
From what I have seen and heard - IT IS TERRIBLE TO BE BOTH - Not just for the reasons above...
However! - If you made a mute character, that only communicates through eye expressions, I guess that could be pretty funny... But you would have to play that like really well...
But yes, every choice you make will be questioned as to why you did it, especially as you are also the DM, which means, whilst it may be fun for you - the other players, may not be having as much fun
A dmpc should never have any agency of the party
that was i was going for
not allowed or not reccomended?
Both
Cuz this
The whole mute character (questionable idea to begin with) is basically a sidekick where they have limited interaction with the world itself
I mean - It's a means to an end though 🤣
Its one way to do it
But yes, personally - I wouldn't want to play with a DM who is also a character
I just feel like its solving a problem by introducing another
And thus is life! 😄
Sure a mute character can't do anything to do with talking with npcs but since they have perfect knowledge
Like if the campaign suggests the DM to play a NPC a certain way because they're lying, would the mute character just start attacking the lying NPC because as the DM they know they're lying thanks to the book
Well yes - As mentioned, Players would Question every choice you made, and wander why you made that choice... Metagaming is also hard to avoid, and the suspicion of metagaming would be even harder to avoid
For other players, It would be a hard game
You can't avoid metagaming that way lol
Campaign books tell too much about what's going on behind the scenes
That's my point
it's a bit hard to look for games in #looking-for-players , most DMs are across the globe
Hi
Mb It js says horrified D&D
its not allowed? how is it not allowed?
What’s not allowed?
dmpc
also its just me n my friend (the blind leading the blind)
They take emphasis off the players, often will involve metagaming, and usually feel like the DM is giving them special treatment
If you’re the DM, you decide what’s allowed at your table
That being said, it’s not usually recommended for you to play a DMPC
so its allowed?
Can we stop you?
prolly if its not allowed
You’re the DM, you make the rules for your game. How are we supposed to determine what’s “allowed” or not?
Rules As Written
RAW wouldn’t be able to stop you if you’re the DM anyway
but we were following the RAW rules 🙁
RAW also doesn't have rocket launchers in game, but you can add it in anyways lol
Go wild
we dont want to go homebrew
if having dmpc is not allowed, then i dont become dmpc cus its gonna be homebrew
In that case yeah RAW doesn't stop you from dmpc
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas
I just started dnd and I love it any tips?
How familiar are ya with the rules?
A little
Well, i recommend reinforcing your rules knowledge by reading the first two chapters of the free basic rules found in #learn-to-play
But for non-reading tips, I recommend being a bit active on this server! It helped me learn the norms, the dos and do nots, and familiarised me with different styles.
Apart from that, communicating issues with your table and helping others get immersed through roleplay is great
I find the "Ensuring Fun for all" a good read for what some of the social expectations might be around the table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics#RespectfortheDM
Hello, I kinda have like a basic kind of question. I am not sure when I will start playing, but I plan to do it one day
But, which books are the best to buy for 2024 rules and stuff like that? To get the most basic contant? Like for example, a subclass for a character, a race that is locked etc
And also, can the bought books be used on different platforms like roll20 as well if I wanted to join a campaign here?
The 2024 PHB, likely
And I’m not sure about cross platform books
Player's handbook? What else do you think could be needed?
And that's ok!
Technically not even the PHB is needed
Was just curious how it works
That depends on what subclass or species you want to use
The PHB gives I think three more for each class, as well as additional species.
Of course, if you want artificer get that book, and if you want even more subclasses plus Dhampir there’s Heroes of Faerun
Well, I am not sure yet about the species, but I was thinking of either monk warrior of mercy or druid circle of the stars
Oooh, so stuff from Baldur's gate 3 are here, that's cool
I believe they’re both in the PHB
(Also monk is goated, you got good taste)
Also, sorry that I am asking a lot, I am just getting into these stuff and trying to get a research. For now I won't buy anything (cause I bought a gift for me, aka iPad and pencil), but I am planning for future
I just like martial art vibes XD
HELL YEAH
Me too
I am playing where winds meet and this is one of the reasons
In general, in past I heard about DND but my first encounter with it was Baldur few years ago
Baldur’s gate and dnd aren’t exactly the same btw
BG is just inspired by dnd
They share some similarities, and some differences
I know about it, but it was my first encounter with something similar
I'm watching critical role to check how it works as well
Yeah, my first encounter with anything D&D was Neverwinder Nights. At that point I had no idea there was anything else apart from the video game. It was years before I played D&D 😄
Mine was playing 3.5 e long long ago then bg 3
is homebrew really no limits? because we be crafting guns here, but i have to balance it by introducing physics and kinematics and irl crafting recipes
The limits are whatever your dm deems it to be
And of course how the homebrew thing plays in practice, campaign would be over in 2 sessions if you have a homebrew item that one shots everything and automatically passes all checks for example
im the dm
i allowed op shit as long as it can exist in real life
example: atomic bombs
but they have to know the recipe (i.e access to classified documents and processes)
I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
why not
That's how you risk getting into almost free form roleplay territory where the numbers don't matter and whatever metaphorical hammer the players managed to convince you to give them last will be used to hammer anything that even vaguely resembles the metaphorical nail.
Hey guys, me and my friend are looking to play DnD. Only thing is we have absolutely no idea how to start or get players. Any chance someone would be willing to help us out and maybe start a campaign?
Also I know there is a guide but we prefer to learn via actually playing as we get confused otherwise..

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Unfortunately, I think it's going to be pretty unlikely that you're going to find a game unless you have at least a basic grasp of how the game is played according to the rules.
DnD is a game where 4-6 people take a couple hours out of their week to get together and play. It's usually considered bad etiquette to expect a large portion of everyone's time to be spent teaching you how to play, when you could have read up on that on your own.
@timid locust thank you so much. I have already bought the Players Handbook and The monster Manuel to try and get a grasp of this, we've tried to do up a character sheet but are just a little confused on modifiers? I know its rude to ask someone to teach us on the go but I was just hoping if there was someone that is able to do a training session (like a one off just to clarify some things and explain somethings we wouldnt be aware of as newbies) is there anything like that? I completely get if not. 😊
There certainly might be, but they are pretty rare. I know there's paid sessions run every week or so to explain the rules, but I don't actually know very much about that.
Instead, we can certainly help you out here, if you've got any specific questions. We can start with Ability Scores and Modifiers if you want.
We can't teach you the whole game, but we can definitely figure out individual parts that you get stuck on
Amazing thankyou so much. I was told you could role 4 D6s and pick the 3 highest dice to get one score. Then repeat another 5 times to do the other abilities. I have done this but am just confused on the modifiers. Are they class based?
Hi
I rly wanna get into D&D but don't know how to
I've never played or anything and dont really know anyone else who plays but i've seen it online and heard about it from my english teacher from a while ago and it seems so cool
What you're currently referring to is a method used to generate Ability Scores, which are the core 'stats' in DnD. Your Ability Scores basically dictate most of your modifiers for everything else.
However, the method your referring to is the Rolling method. I wouldn't recommend this for new players, especially if you haven't found a DM yet. Simply put, you can roll your stats to randomly generate them... but if your DM didn't see you roll them, they'll probably make you re-roll them again later.

Continuing from this, I'd instead recommend using the Standard Array method, which is listed above.
You just take each of those six numbers and put one of them as each of your Ability Scores as you see fit.
Oh buggar, I didn't even think about different methods. Ok and how do we work modifiers from the array method?
99% of DMs will accept a character who used the Standard Array. I think it's generous to say 3% of DMs would accept a character with rolled stats that they didn't see rolled themselves.
So let's talk Modifiers. Each Ability Score is associated with a static Modifier.
- An Ability Score of 8 has a modifier of -1.
- An Ability Score of 10 has a modifier of +0.
- An Ability Score of 12 has a modifier of +1.
- An Ability Score of 14 has a modifier of +2.
I'm sure you can see the pattern here. For every 2 points your Ability Score is above 10, you get a +1 Modifier. For every 2 points your Ability Score is below 10, you get a -1 Modifier.
So an Ability Score of 15 is has a +2 Modifier. An Ability Score of 18 has a +4.
Do you have the players hand book?
Ohhhh ok that actually makes a lot of sense now. My only sort of teaching was watching Critical Role Campaign plays and I was so confused how they got those numbers . Thank you so much
Hi new to DND have some questions
I have Digital copy of lost mine of phandelver do I need some physical things like dice/map/DM board and also do I need two copies of character sheet so or just one for the players
I do but I got very confused with it...I unfortunately struggle with things unless I do it irl 🫠
Each of those Modifiers is added to specific rolls. Let's say your DM wants you to make a Stealth (Dexterity) check.
If your Dexterity is 14, you've got a +2 Dexterity Modifier. You'd roll a d20 and add 2 to the result.
No you can use digital character sheets (DnDBeyond or Roll20 for example), online dice rollers, and yeah folks should have a character sheet (printed, PDF, or online) for their characters.
I assume you're running this game in person? You don't need dice, since there are various websites and phone apps that can roll dice for you, but dice are fun.
Maps can certainly help, but you could also just recreate the maps in the adventure by drawing them on paper.
As for a DM board, it's not necessary. Anything that can hide your notes is sufficient.
@pearl cave ahh kk I just dm'ed you hopefully that helps!
Thank you will talk to my party see if they want to do it online
@twin sparrow thank you so much. Sorry for being a pain @timid locust . You've guys have helped a ton 😊😊
Far from it. That's what this channel is for.
Did I calculate this right? I have 10 skill proficiencies?
3 from being a bard
2 from having a criminal background
2 from being a changeling
3 more for being level 3
"3 more for being level 3" is going to need a little more clarification
I'm a college of lore bard
says "Gains proficiency in three skills of choice."
Alright, thanks

oh thanks, ive made sure to go over the introduction. I wanted to know if its better to get on making a character, or maybe if its better to try and get into someone's campaign and then work from there? Also how i might be able to find a group to play with.
It's not a bad idea to make a practice character before finding a group, so that you have a better idea of how character creation works.
We call it a practice character because there's no guarantee your DM will accept it, so you may end up having to change some or even all of it depending on what campaign you join.

hi
Hiiii ^^
Sorry, I don't actually know that one
Hi everyone!
I’m new to D&D and also new to this server.
I play with the Stranger Things: Hellfire Club starter set, but it’s in English and I’m French, so I have some difficulties.
Would anyone be willing to help me learn and understand the game better?
Thanks!
What is your specific question? I may be able to answer it
Hmm. I think the SRD is available in French. Let me investigate.
Ah, yes it is.
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/FR_SRD_CC_v5.2.1.pdf
Here are the trimmed down Basic Rules in French. Hopefully this helps!
Could this help me with the Stranger Things version?
Yes. The starter set is based on the basic rules. If we knew the specific question about the stranger things version, that would also help
Thank you
Unfortunately it wouldn't help with the specifics of how to run that particular adventure, but it would help with the basics of how to play the game and build a character.
Guys what do you recommend if I would need to be a dungeon master some time , what would be a good adventure to try it out
Not a DM, but maybe run a oneshot or two to get the hang of it probably
I've heard some great things about Peril in Pinebrook as a perfect starter one shot
Mine ran Time for Pleasantries, but it's kind of an odd duck of a module
as a new player how can i find a game where i am accepted as a minor in europe?
hi i was wondering how i would kinda get a dm bc im new here and have no clue what im doing here

Hey, I’m new to dungeons and dragons, would love some advice if anyone has some
Don't feel like you need to rush and get/know everything, just the basics is fine.
Hello! I'm fairly new to D&D, pretty much. I know the basics and even build a campaign that I never got to try out 😅. Only had one session in person ever
The Free Basic Rules is some decent reading to learn more.
And we have a #find-a-game channel for how to find games through this channel
Currently setting up a simple version of DND for me and my friends since we’re all newbies. And I volunteered to be the DM. I ended up drawing my friend’s characters for fun. But I wanted to ask if there are some things I should keep note of as the DM? And yes I already read some of the basics and..watched every recommended dnd video for beginners
Currently have 5 players
Well, the main thing is to communicate any issues you got, and keep note if what is happening in the story. Just chill and have fun
Okay, got it! Thank you
Oh and remember that you’re working WITH the party to make a story, not against them
Prioritise table fun for everyone (including you!)
Good for you for being willing to take on being a DM, the #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building channels will be of use to you. If you like watching videos to learn, search YouTube for Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series and Matt Mercer's DM Tips. You will eventually want to aquire and read the Dungeon Master's Guide, the latest one actually (for once) does a good job of explaining how to run the game. Good luck and have fun!
Yeah im currently listening to everybody’s character backstory since some of them are gonna keep their identity a secret, really excited, Im especially excited to roleplay as the NPCs
hii everyone, merry christmas. I'm iara from Argentina and I'm new to D&D. I'm really interested in the game and I'd like to play someday. nice to meet you all ❤️
Gooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
Thank you so much! I’ll make sure to watch them!
How do people work around the DnD Bugs for characters? I.E you level up, and it doesn't add the stats automatically, or it over exaggerates it etc...
When you level up, you don’t automatically get stats tho
Yes, but when you do add the XP and level up - it's not applying the HP properly
Did you perhaps set it to manual health instead of automatic?
Also is this on dnd beyond?
So far, we have had to toggle the level up another level, then drop it back to the previous level, to get the HP to apply
Yes on DND Beyond 🙂
And also yes, it's set to manual, but even after applying the HP, after a roll, it doesn't always apply
If it’s manual, it won’t change even if you level up, and you need to manual change it yourself.
If it’s still buggy after that, try #ddb-feedback
Appreciated
Hello chatters I'm rather new to d&d, i have played in a few sessions but they have primarily flunked, would anyone have any tips on what i should read up on before I look for a new campaign?
Do you know why they flunked?
Dm's lack of experience and overall friend group drama
Mc donalds had something to do with it
now that's a story XD
So how can you avoid such a situation in the future, do you think?
I'm not certain?
make better friends?
Well, you do seem to recognize when it's time to leave a table, so you're off to a good start there
The trick is to avoid them in the first place
Which is, granted, a bit easier said than done
Well they were my friends before d&d started, drama happened after the game started and the DM just wasnt the best at world building.
The other campagin I was in was great, time zones just got in the way cause it was all online
This sounds like it’d be good for you to be the DM :D
😔 I miss that campagin, almost 6 months and we all just got to busy
Only very mildly joking
I love world building but i would not fare well at the job, I dont mind helping create world maps and city maps for the campagins though.
im spelling that word wrong every time
Everyone starts out somewhere!
And it’s campaign
thank you
I still would rather just be a player than a DM I like the game play from that side.
I'm honestly just looking for some guidance on what I should read up on to get back into the game before going into a new campaign.
its amazing looking back on it now
Hey everyone, haven't played any sessions yet. But curious and wanting ti try, is there anything online that hold sessions or groups like that? Especially for a new comer wanting tk try things out.

Could someone guide me through a mach campaign? Me and a couple of my friends are new to dnd and want to host a game night and I was given the task of DM, where should I start? I’ve watched a couple videos but one on one experience is best for me to learn, Thanks!
There are too many new people every day for folks to do 1-1 training here
If you've already checked the new DM resources, you can ask for tips and advice in #dm-discussion
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
If you want to be a bow fighter, that can work fine
Hello I was wondering if someone can answer my question; I would like to play with people but I can only message due to not having a mic does this happen often or should I give up and wait till I get a mic, and or if someone has a set up or a mid game join where I don’t need a mic that I can join I would like to play like right now if possible
D&D is rarely drop in and play. The game usually takes a bit to set up.
You can definitely do text based campaigns, but yeah you likely won’t find a game for a bit
As for text-based play, it is rarer but it does exist. It's called play-by-post (PBP).
I was under the impression text based campaigns and PBP were different?
Well thank you where do I go to see if someone would like to play said game
#find-a-game , likely will have the info you need. Maybe also try reddit, dnd beyond forums and roll20.
Not necessarily. You could run a real time campaign and just let someone type instead of talk, but I don't think people usually consider that a text based campaign
You can search #looking-for-players to see if anyone is running a text-based or PBP game, but I would expand your search to look at other avenues as well.
Check out the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Discover function!
If it's all text only, it's usually PBP
Would it be wrong to post in the discussion tab if someone’s interested
Yes. That’s against server rules
Yep, soliciting games outside of the proper channels is off-topic.
Read #find-a-game thoroughly!
hey what game should i download to play on
You don't need to download anything. To be clear, this server is for Dungeons & Dragons, the tabletop game, not any of the video games.
You can definitely talk about the video games (see #dnd-media), but the focus of the server is the tabletop game.
sorry completely new to this how would i go about playing tabletop online
?tag new online
What you need for D&D is:
- The free D&D rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024)
- Dice (d20, d12, d10 and d100, d8, d6, and a d4 - or can use online dice rolling tool or a dice app)
- Character sheets (https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf) for the player characters
- A group of folks wanting to play (1 Dungeon Master and 3-6 players typically)
-# credit to UndyingNoob
A lot of folks play over Discord while some use a fancy platform called a virtual tabletop. I wouldn't worry about the details until you have a group.
all right thank you
Good luck and happy adventuring! Do feel free to ask questions when you hit something confusing.
Hi I'm planning to buy the DND player handbook, but I'm confused there are 2 version. 1 with a big giant while the other one is. Party fighting dragon. I'm confused which is the latest 5e version?
Dragon is the new one
Gotcha thankss
Should mention 2024 dungeon masters guide on the back as extra verification
are artificers typically allowed? if not why/why not?
They are allowed if people have the sourcebook
In uncommon situations they may be banned because not everyone has artificer but that's not that big of a deal
They are not a "core" class, so the general assumption coule be they are not allowed, and have to be opted in to.
Whereas all other classes are in the PHB as core.
thank you sir 🔥
Hello, I have a question
So, if I buy player's handbook on beyond, can it also be connected to roll20? I wanted to ask it, cause sometimes people are doing multiple platforms and stuff like that
I just wanna make sure if I'd need to buy the same thing twice
Somewhat, but not really. What you can do is use the Beyond20 browser extension to be able to send the rolls you make on DDBeyond over to the roll20 game.
But you can't build a character in the roll20 character creator with content you bought on DDBeyond unless you're ok with manually copypasing.
is Roll20 good?
Hi, im kinda verry new to dnd so i am a bit more then a littlr lost in the character page, i read something abouy skills but i still dont ger it!
It's a good vtt, but one among quite a few. It has the benefit of being one of the first. It's also the first I personally tried, but I have since moved on.
Hmm, what are you looking at at the moment? Are you trying to make a character or just trying to understand the rules?
Both!
What else can I do besides waiting for the first session
reading the "how-to-play" really helped me understand the skills
Reading up on the rules is always a good idea imo.
I think I've read the rules 5 times over by now
So are you currently on the character creator? The skills are explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SkillProficiencies
The upshot is: when your character tries to do something that has to do with a skill they're proficient in, they get a bonus to the roll.
That bonus is equal to your proficiency bonus, which goes up as you level up. You see it in the table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CharacterAdvancement
Well, then you can always do what others do here: talk about D&D while we wait for actual D&D to happen
Yep just not sure how much more talking I can do before my brain explodes
the most fun I've had so far is filling out the character sheet, and the math
Oooh, oki, I see
What are the difference between beyond and roll20? Yes, I am totally new as well, so I am asking all the questions before I try
Imo, filling out Beyond's character sheet is easier, but there are features that are paid content there, and I've never used Roll20
Well, DDB has the benefit of being the official dnd website and having the most polished character creator.
Roll20 is what we call a vtt, a virtual tabletop.
Oooh, ok
DDBeyond now also has a vtt, but it's less polished than the one on Roll20.
Ooooh, I see
I think I've gotten attached to my character, without even playing them, I've commissioned two artists to draw them
So, in theory, if I get stuff on beyond that you buy, like a monk that is warrior of the mercy, can I somehow transfer it to roll20 for the map?
There are also other vtts that you might look at, such as Owlbear Rodeo (recommended for new players and people who don't need all the extra bells and whistles) and foundry (the opposite of owlbear).
You can transfer the rolls
Oooh, is Owlbear Rodeo free for players?
It's freemium, same as roll20.
So for the basic functionality, it's free.
It (owlbear) does not have a character creator at all though, so the idea is that you jut use it as your battlemap and table, while having your sheet open somehwere else.
Oki, I see
So if I get a character sheet on beyond and I play on the map as a player, I can do it smoothly in general?
On owlbear I mean
Yeah, I think so. That's how I run some of my online games. It does depend on the DM of the game you're joining though. Sometimes they might want specific places where you have your sheet.
Ok, I see
Thank you for explaining :3
In general, I will buy stuff eventually on beyond, cause I also like how the website looks as well as the art etc.
And it explains stuff pretty well
Yeah, it's very convenient! It does have its kinks like most websites, but it generalls works fairly well.
No website is perfect tbh
Indeed. I mostly say it so you double-check when your DDBeyond sheet says something, just to make sure it represents the rules correctly. It does in 97% of cases, but not always.
Oooh, I see
Dunno when I will join campaign, but it is also a bit intimidating to play as the character, still I wanna try one day XD
I've been roleplaying, but not dnd and not on voice chat
I started with play by post, also not D&D. It's certainly a change, but it helps if you try it out with friends or people you know a bit, rather than heading straight into online spaces.
There are also D&D play by post games btw, DDB has a forum that hosts some of them:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/play-by-post
Ooo, that's cool!
It would be nice to do it with friends, but they are either busy or do not like dnd XD
Sometimes it can't be helped. I eventually joined some local one shots, where I met some new friends though.
That's pretty cool
But yeah, one day I plan to join online, cause why not? Irl I also would not know these people
But really, thank you for all the information, cause now I have a better understanding and how it actually works ^^
Well, online it's certainly more convenient, but online spaces are also less controlled and people sometimes feel less social pressure. It doesn't mean it's automatically bad, but you might need to try out a couple of different groups and see what clicks.
happy to help
Oh also, I actually remembered I got another question
So, I know that there is a dice with n20
But I had seen collection of dices and they also have different shapes and stuff like that
Are they also used for sessions?
Yes!
yes
there are d4s, d6, d8, d12, and d20
DnD uses a d4.d6,d8,d10, percentile dice, and d20
Yeah, but less often. The d20 is the most used, for all sorts of checks, but the smaller dice are often used for things like damage rolls.
Oooh, I see
Also percentile is a specialised d10
there are also D2s, which are just coins
You almost never see those
yes
They're not part of the standard set, since you can represent them with any of the other dice.
Same goes for d3, which is represented with a d6.
What is percentile? (English my not first language)
Ok, I see
A 100-sided die, usually represented by two ten-sided dice.
There is a die that has 100 sides?
with the power of multiplication, there is
yup, there are shops that sell those, but they're mostly for show haha
Pffff, I see
They're a bit awkward to roll
I can imagine, this big boy has 100 sides XDDD
Imagine rolling a 100 on that
Usually we just roll two d10’s, one for the 10s units and one for the ones unit
So like 40 and 2 makes 42
Crazy luck
1% chance exactly
Tis rare
So, during the sessions, which ones are needed?
Depends on the session and character, but technically all
D20, D12, D10, D8, and D4's, but you can just use online stuff for those
But you can use online dice, as Echo said
I'm actually so bored right now I'm rolling 8 D20s on my computer
just until I get a 20 on all of them
and d6
I understand how most work, but how does the triangle one work? XD
Depends on the numbering, but it's the number that is the right side up that counts. That's the d4.
it's a tetrahedron
that's the d4 and depending on the one you've got it'll either be the number on the point facing up, or the number in the middle at the bottom.
Most d4s (the I have seen) have their numbers on the points.

this is such a weird question but I feel this is a perfect place for it. is there scammers in the community? like people that reach out to invite you to a campaign that has some financial aspect to it and ghost completely when you make the transaction
I’m new here
I am trying to dm a campaign about bugs + it’s a teeny bit based on HK but I don’t know the rules at all.

hihi, fellow mouthbreather here just got some question. My group has done about 3-4 session so far and leveld up to lv 4. Just wanted to get any tips and tricks on how I can improve as a player or some advanced stufff that might help?
I'm in the weird role of being a veteran player of ttrpg including Moldvay basic, 1e and 2e where I dropped out of D&D whilst moving countries, and now I'm lost at sea with 5e. I can run rings around narrative roleplaying but I'm getting stuck on the character optimisation/class building and combat strategy.
Where do I find sessions
Hey everyone. Completely new to the world of DND. I have always been fascinated by it. With a lot of reference in LOTR, The Hobbit, Stranger things and Baldurs Gate 3, which I am currently playing. Would be much interested in knowing even more about the lore, the whole game mechanics and make friends with similar interest, anyone who can guide where I can start? Super new to this 🙂
That’s a fairly vague question
Good question for #character-discussion - folks there can provide suggestions and feedback on your character and how to improve on it.
You can check with folks in #optimization for optimization ideas.

Where can I find sessions to play dnd please help me
What are the best D&D's VTTs to learn the game from? So far I have seen suggestions like Roll20, Foundry VTT, Fantasy Grounds, or Owlbear Rodeo.
VTTs are just tools to run games virtually - they do not teach you how to play although they can streamline or automate aspects of the game mechanics.
Best really depends on you and the folks you're playing with.
Many VTTs have a free tier that you can test things out and find what works best for you and your group.
Ok.
I appreciate this info.

@ornate shoal Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.

What is a better starter set welcome to the hellfire club or heroes of the borderlands
Hey, im totally new to DnD and am looking for someone to teach me as much as possible. I know there's guides but it's always easier to learn from someone experienced.
I hear Heroes is good for getting started.

Unfortunately, the server doesn't offer 1:1 teaching sessions. We get dozens of new players every day, so it's just not feasible considering how much time it takes to go over the Basic Rules.
Instead, we can help with specific parts you get stuck on as you read through the rules yourself!
I'm looking to find a game that I can join, over discord hopefully. I'm new to dnd but I've got the gist of the basics. Definitely still teachable!!

@timid locust I have but unfortunately I haven’t found someone who is doing a long game only one shots
Keep on looking! Finding the right game that fits your schedule and goals is the hardest part of DnD!
You can also check out the post linked above for some tips for your search.
The best thing you can do for finding a game that fits your needs is to cast a wide net. Try checking other servers and other websites as well
Theres so much i’ve tried reading most of it
Thankfully you don't need to memorize everything. The most important parts are the sections on Playing The Game and Character Creation.
Skim over the individual options just to get an idea of what they're about, and read more in depth once you find the stuff you think is coolest.
Ik how to make characters but the using abilities saving throws and proficiencies etc are sm that i get overwhelmed
There's no rush. Take each section one at a time. If you need help with a specific topic, we can help here as well.
The thing is i understand games better after playing them and since nobody really here knows what theyre doing its make it difficult for me to understand and play
Yea ik obv thats why I’m trying to learn
It’s not a perfect solution, but if you are generally a “learn by doing” type of person then maybe you’d enjoy watching the game be played on YouTube or Twitch. Theres countless videos of people that record themselves as they play. You can get a feel for the flow of the game and see how the different rules and mechanics are used in a practical setting
you a newbie to?
Yepl
eyyyy me to
Umm sure i can try that
Nicee nicee are you learning the ropes or do you know the basics?
both i have a charecter on d&d beyond that i know how to play
The virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab) do feature learn-to-play sessions. You can also sometimes find similar sessions offered at game stores or libraries.
Umm okayy I’ll try that
Thanks
I dont even have that😭😭😭
ok its not that hard to play characters but depends on the setting but ive never played a session
I'm not new to dnd, more new to being a player character. I started as a dm and never quite got the chance to play. Anyone willing dm for me, I don't mind if it's a one-shot, I just would like to get a taste of being a pc for once.

Welcome. This isn't the proper channel to look for a DM to play with. Check out the instructions above for where you should look
Alright, thanks man.
Hello, I've been in the process of making my first character. I've been a bit overwhelmed trying to jump from tab to tab on online resources to make sure i've got everything down, so i'd like for some help going step-by-step on the things I need to be marking down on my sheet
We're happy to help, but just to check, have you read through the basic rules yet? Its pretty common that people jump into character creation before they read the rules, and thats the biggest source of confusion for them
Welcome! Sure thing. The primary first three things that a character needs are a:
- Species
- Origin (Background)
- Class
Once you've figured those out, we can move on to more specific steps
