Artificer isn't the only class that can craft magic items though, it's available to any character that can fulfill the requirement to make one as per the magic item crafting rules in the DMG.

If you're limited to the Basic Rules try looking at Wizard. You can fairly easily reflavor some of your spells as looking steampunk in aesthetic

5th Edition is the current and most recent edition of the game. While there are "technically" 2 versions of 5e, it's better to just learn either 2014 or 2024. Of the two, I recommend learning 2024

The #find-a-game channel has instructions for how to do so, but the simple explanation is that this server has specific “looking-for” channels that you can browse through. If you are a player and want to find a DM to play with, then you can browse through the #looking-for-players channel. If you want to make your own post so DMs reach out to you, you’ll need to use the server bot to fill out a form. Then the bot will automatically make a post for you in the channel you specified based on the answers you provided

D&D play-by-post is a little different than free-form text-based roleplay as there are rules in place and the DM being the means through which players interact with the world. It can be a fun alternative, but it's easy for them to fall apart too.

Hey guys, just a quick question. I watched some youtube videos on creating character sheets, and they mostly said to refer to my DM for the kind of character I want to create that would fit the theme of the quest. Is this absolutely needed? Or can I just create what I want? I don’t know anyone who plays dnd near me and I certainly don’t have a DM to ask

harsh fjord
#

I would say that if you want to actually play the character, then you need to consult with the DM. D&D is a social game. If you want to make a character just for fun, you can do whatever you like!

# rancid tinsel that’s kinda sad

As iamrazorwing mentioned, DnD is a social game. Think of it kind of like a hang out with friends.

Maybe you just found a super fun new board game or video game, and you're really excited to play it! You're allowed to be excited, and you can certainly pitch it to them, but maybe it turns out that no one else is really interested in that particular game, and wants to play something else.

You've got to temper your expectations!

vagrant breach

It’s often the case that you can distill a character down to some recognizable essence that you can then add to and bend in order to get what you want in the DM’s intended game

For what it’s worth, as a DM I’ve really never said “you can’t play that character” but I’ve sometimes sent players back to the drawing board when they’ve basically made the same character as someone else in the game

When I do that, I’m telling them “let’s drop the part of your character that’s a copy of X’s character, and let’s develop the part that’s unique so that it’s a bigger part of the character”

I once had a moment where a player was trying to bargain with the quest giver for upfront payment and wanted to roll for persuasion, cleric wanted to back them up with casting guidance and the rest of the party (mostly the bard) were trying to distract said npc by doing a performance so that the cleric can pull off casting guidance without suspicion which was honestly hilarious to watch as the dm because I wasn't gonna object to the cleric casting guidance for free

What's the difference between character level and class levels? because I keep reading something about wizard levels and warlock levels and I don't know what they are, is it the same thing?

harsh fjord
#

You could take levels in multiple classes (multiclassing). So to be real simple, your character could be level 2, with 1 level in fighter and 1 level in rogue.

#

In that case, if something is referring to your fighter class level it's 1, whereas anything dealing with your character class is 2.

tawdry breach
#

So if my character has been a fighter since level 1 will the character level and class level be the same, but if they multiclass rogue at level 3 will rogue be level 1?

timid locust

A character who is level 3 can have:

  • All three levels in Fighter
  • Two levels in Fighter and one level in another class
  • All three levels in different classes

That being said, be warned: multiclassing is not recommended for new players at all.

Welcome! The bot post above has a bunch of very helpful resources to get you started. That should answer your first few questions. To address the last 2 though:

  • The "online table" that you asked about is called a "Virtual Table Top" (VTT for short) and there are lots of options for this. Several are free to use, and some are paid services with higher quality features. D&D Beyond has one built in on their website, but Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are two other free options.
  • You can find pre-published adventures to run if you prefer that. D&D Beyond sells the official ones on their website. You may also be able to find fan made campaigns for free online, though the quality of those will be a mixed bag.

I was reading something and I'm wondering now, do clerics and warlocks get subclasses at level 1 and should new players be doing something with this?

loud pumice
#

Clerics and Warlocks get subclasses at level 1 in the 2014 version, they changed that in 2024 version so that all classes get subclass feats at the same levels.
Although it doesn't fully make sense from a lore perspective but makes sense in a fairness kind of way.

tawdry breach
#

Oh thank the lord I was worried I looked over that

loud pumice

Yea, like I said fairness/mechanics wise makes sense, lore wise doesn't make sense at all. I think most people if they're starting at levels 1 or 2 will predetermine the subclass so that they can make it make sense lore wise.

Alright so continuing off my message from #dnd-discussion:

After character creation, you can only increase your stats in a few ways. The main way is described in the link I sent earlier, where you take a feat that increases your ability scores (e.g. the Ability Score Improvement feat). You only get the option to take a feat at certain character levels, as listed on your class page.

As per the ability score rules, the maximum a PC can have in a stat is 20 normally. There are certain features that can increase the soft cap (such as the features I describe below), but all creatures have a hard cap of 30.

There are also other class features (e.g. Barbarian’s level 20), and high-level magic items that can do it as well.

Soul knife is generally a very cool and versatile subclass to play as if you pair it with Charlatan because of the psychic traits you can add modifyers to increase your skill checks, if you go higher till level 9 there's reliable talent too

#

It's why I'm interested, combat wise tho, psychic blades has a lot of cons

wheat crystal
#

And for hit dice, the full name is “Hit Point Dice.” You have a number equal to your character level, and the size of the depends on the class(es) you have. For example:

  • A level 1 Fighter has 1 1d10 hit die.
  • A level 3 Fighter has 3 1d10 hit die (3d10).
  • A level 2 Fighter, level 1 Rogue multiclass has 2 1d10 hit die and 1 1d8 hit die (2d10+1d8)

The main use is to recover HP on a short rest. When you finish a short rest you may expend any number of your hit die to heal equal to 1 die roll + your Constitution modifier per die expended. You regain all expended hit die after completing a long rest.

#

The other main use is to determine how much HP you gain on level up. As per the level up rules, you gain an increase to your max HP equal to either:

  • 1 roll of your hit die + your Con mod
  • A flat value determined by your class + your Con mod

Hi

If you are a multiclass character, you use the hit die for the class you’re leveling up in. Using the Fighter 2 / Rogue 1 character I mentioned earlier as an example:

  • If they were to take another level in Fighter, they would get another 1d10 hit die, and gain either 1d10+Con or 6+Con max HP
  • If they were to take another level in Rogue, they would get another 1d8 hit die, and gain either 1d8+Con or 5+Con max HP

Multiclassing is a bit complex so just be careful with it as you read more of the rules for it. I also don’t recommend it until you get more of a grasp on the game. To briefly go over it:

  • When you level up you can continue either in your current class or a different class.
  • To multiclass into a new class, you need to fulfill a stat minimum for both the class you’re multiclassing out of and the class you’re multiclassing into, as defined by your class. For example a Wizard/Druid multiclass would need a minimum of 13 Int and 13 Wis.
  • You start with the level 1 features of the new class (e.g. Fighter 2 —> Rogue 1, Wizard 13 —> Druid 1, etc).
  • Certain features you will not benefit from if you get them from 2 different classes, such as Extra Attack
  • There are special rules for determining spell slots if you multiclass multiple spellcasters
trim wave
#

Because they don’t really know anything about the game so I told them they can do whatever with making they’re characters and I’ll see what class fits them most and if they’re characters need a bit of molding to fit into a class I can do that

midnight basin
wheat crystal
#

Oh and important to note, your character level is the sum of your class levels. So a Fighter 2 / Rogue 1 is a level 3 character

wheat crystal
#

That’s important for a few things, such as for casting cantrips, some of which get upgraded with character level instead of class level

midnight basin
#

Usually people who multiclass know exactly the character they want. They have their level 20 build in mind and know how to use all the mechanics at their disposal. For me I like taking one level in order cleric if I have alot of martials. For the voice of authority feature only. But if you don't have grasp of the simple things. Then you aren't gonna grasp when 10-20 things are at your disposal. + same class gets you features at 5th level base class, 6th level subclass most of tbe time.

wide flame
#

Also Proficiency Bonus. PB and cantrips scaling are the main two things that directly scale by total character lebel

trim wave
#

And the max level of a charecter is 20 Exept for sum exceptions depending on classes

wheat crystal
#

There aren’t any exceptions, the maximum level is 20

midnight basin
wheat crystal
#

There are optional rules for playing past 20 but it’s not the same as getting to level 21, 22, etc

midnight basin
#

Rarely do campaigns go to 20

#

Id recommend plan for level 6-10 and start from there

midnight basin
# cyan mauve What's an allighment?

An alignment has a few rp options and a few magic item options. However overall unless your dm really plays into it. Ya don't have to worry much about it.

cyan mauve
#

ok

topaz garnet
#

alignment is mostly a legacy thing from D&D's long history (there was a period since 2014 where there was an attempt to leave it behind but it stuck around)
basically, some things are metaphysically embodiments of certain alignments, like angels be good, devils be lawful evil, demons be chaotic evil
as for less metaphysical embodiments, and more just people, alignment is a descriptor that should be derived from action. So someone is good because they help the town, not that they help the town because they're good. Someone is evil because they set up a crime syndicate, not that they set up a crime syndicate because they're evil. Make sense?

wraith totem
#

Newcomer here. Hard agree on the alignment thing. Its too iconic and memetic to remove.

midnight basin
topaz garnet
wraith totem
#

In short its a bit more nuanced than that.

#

For me, a chaotic neutral character is basically someone not too shy of causing chaos while being mostly uninvolved. Like say a barbarian in a bar. They tend to keep to themselves but don't exactly care much about their surroundings once trouble comes knocking since they're basically built like that.

#

They don't exactly revel in the fight like for example a blood knight does or act like a complete clumsy idiot...mostly.
That's my interpretation anyway.

lavish kayak
#

and the point against alignment for me, is you could just note that down instead of chaotic neutral and then people argue about if you're playing your alignment right

wraith totem
#

Yeah. Alignments tend to be flexible in some situations. I did create a warlock character once with a Thayan background who is chaotic evil but in the story she's acting a lot more lawful evil. I mean she has no problems causing problems and effing sheet up but she isn't reckless. Kinda proves your point that alignments don't always match the story situations.

#

Oh also my first D&D game I played in the 90s (which I genuinely had no clue it was D&D) was Al Qadim the Genie's curse. I should probably replay that one someday. And the Mystara beat em ups.

Dice

Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.

When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.

Abilities

All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.

Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.

Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.

  • Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
  • Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
  • Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.

After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

How can I fill the stats?

dull kindle

There's a few way to generate stats in which you'll fill them by selecting the stats you want

#

In general stats are pretty streamlined depending on the class

#

Focusing on your main stat is much better than dividing up your stats evenly

hearty escarp
#

Stats are generated by one of three methods described in the rulebook:

  • Standard array (fixed stat numbers)
  • Random generation (roll dice)
  • Point buy (assign ability scored based on a point pool)

If you don't have a group yet, I recommend standard array. Definitely don't do random generation unless the DM told you to do so.

Hi guys! Me and 3 of my friends wanted to start playing DnD but none of us have any experience. I blindly agreed to be DM lol and when I searched up some videos on YouTube about being DM I realised how hard it is 😭 could someone explain to me basics of DnD please? For example why are there so many dices, where should be a world set, also if 3 players is enough. And I know that there are used some sort of cards? I'm not sure. And sorry for my english, it's not my first language

hearty escarp
#

Well, being a DM and knowing the rules are two different things, so I'd tackle them one by one.

To learn about the rules, I recommend reading the Basic Rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024

Just the first chapter will give you most of the important information in the game, such as what the dice are used for.

#

3 players are enough, yeah. Most prewritten adventures assume about 4 characters, so that's close enough and you can always adjust to make it more suitable for less or more.

#

Cards aren't a core part of the game, but they can be useful for new players. For example, when I introduced new players to the game, I printed out spell cards for them.

The new Starter Set, Heroes of the Borderlands also includes cards to make learning the game easier.

# dense wasp Hello all, I'm a new DM running a campaign with new players and I'm looking for ...

Are you all long-standing friends or a bunch of relative strangers? Playing pretend can feel awkward for a lot of folks, so part of it comes down to time and comfort. As folks (ideally) begin to trust one another, they can worry less about feeling self-conscious and can more easily decide how their character would act (even if they don't do a weird voice or use "I"). So build trust: spend time talking about stuff besides the game, practice attentive listening, and all the rest. Google for ideas if you're stuck.

As the DM, you can also model this behavior by adding more descriptions when it counts. Doing it too much can bog down the pace. You can also prompt players: "What does it look like when [character] [verbs]?" Sometimes folks need to be invited to imagine, and eventually they may start doing it on their own.

# cyan mauve How do profecicny bonuses work?

You have a static number called a Proficiency Bonus. It always starts at +2. At certain levels, that number increases. You add this bonus to a number of dice rolls, usually specific things you're proficient in.

harsh fjord
#

At level 1, you have +2 proficiency bonus that means you're better at certain skills and saving throws compared with others. So you would add that bonus to skills/saves you're proficient in. The bonus increases at higher levels.

So a druid with proficiency in wisdom saves would likely have a better chance of success than someone without proficiency thanks to that additional +2.

Generally speaking, each campaign would use a new character. They take place in different worlds and you play a different levels. If you wanted to use the same one over and over, it’s a good idea to “reimagine” them each time, and create them as if they lived in this new world for their whole life, rather than it being the actual same person each time

Question for basically the hit die and how it works when u level up from what I’ve understood from my research is that for every time u get to use it u role the dice depending on which one it is from ur class and u add the number u get from ur roll plus the max number u can get from the dice

timid locust
#

Not quite, but I see iamrazorwing typing and I'm sure that will explain more in depth.

harsh fjord
#

Not quite. You get your max amount from your hit die (plus your Con bonus) at level 1. Then at additional levels you can either roll your class's hit die or take the average.

So a fighter (d10 hit die) with a +2 Con would have 12 HP at level 1. At level 2, the player could either roll 1d10 and add 2 (Con bonus) OR take the average of a d10 (6) and add 2, in which case they'd have 20 HP.

#

By rolling, that level 2 fighter could have anywhere from 15 HP to 24 HP, whereas the average is more consistent but without the benefit of those higher numbers (nor the downside of the lower ones).

trim wave
#

Ahhh okay okay thank you for putting it simply

trim wave
#

And the amount of xp we get from stuff is all decided from the dm correct

harsh fjord
#

Official creatures do have XP awards to be shared among the party, but everything else is subject to the DM. And even the DM may not follow the published XP values.

timid locust
#

The DM might not even be using XP at all! Plenty of tables decide when players level up using the Milestone Method, which says that the players all level up when they've achieved goals set out by the DM.

timid locust

LOVE that description, honestly.

harsh fjord
#

You could go one of two ways, though, if you're intent on buying something:

  • Purchase a starter set like Heroes of the Borderlands, which has a small adventure and lots of material geared toward new players and DMs to make learning the game easier. You maybe won't get much replay value out of that, though.
  • Buy the Player's Handbook. This is the main rulebook for D&D, which will let you play the game for years to come. But it doesn't do as much heavy lifting as the starter sets to help new players/new DMs, but it does some. It doesn't come with dice or tokens or an adventure, so you'll have to get those yourself.

timid locust

If you're still just trying it out and just want to be a player, I'd still recommend the free Basic Rules. They have everything you need to play. You can even do your dice rolls online, so you don't even need real dice if you don't want them.

Hello I'm new to the game, I once tried it with a friend but he was terrible DM, he thought he was against "players" and I kinda disliked the game. Ill try it again with friend this christmas and was wondering

Did this ever happened to you (DM issue)
And what are the best ways to learn the game is there some simple campaign for 1 dm and 2-3 players.

Thank you 😊

I've been lucky that I haven't had an adversarial DM like you describe, but it does happen. Thankfully, there are enough people out there that there's almost certainly a table that's right for you.

#learn-to-play and the basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) are one place to start. You can also supplement those with YouTube videos and/or tutorial sessions like those offered through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab).

Hey @wise hemlock !

Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!

There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .

Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.

Assuming you know the rules...

Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!

I recommend using a prewritten because running the game is a separate but related skill from making content. On some level, you'll be making content anyway as the players will do things the adventure didn't anticipate, but it gives you more of a baseline to work from so you can better focus on learning to run the game.

"You want to rip this life away from me? NEVER!" Dopane brandished her snaplock pistol.

"You think I want this? I DON'T WANT TO HARM PEOPLE! I NEVER DID, I JUST WANTED TO LIVE! LIVE AS COMFORTABLY AS I COULD WITHOUT DISTURBING OTHERS!" Then she pointed it at the party. Her gun hand was shaking, her face was sweating as her nose scrunched up and her eyes squinted.

After a while, she pointed it down. Then let out a 'heh', then another, then she laughed.

"Tell you what, I had a pathetic life back on Earth. Barely work, barely socialise, barely even shower. All I did was play games while living off social welfare." She continued, rubing her thumb against the pistol. "I had no one, not even myself. THIS, was my chance at a better life."

"SO STEP OUT OF MY WAY, LEAVE, OR YOU'LL FORGET HOW TO BREATHE!" Then she pointed it again.

(Out of context, btw, this is just a test narration excerpt that I wrote. And this is an NPC, not player)

#

Stats

echo kelp
#

?tag new abilities

exotic remnantBOT

Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

it was a premade LVL 1 Humen Cleric

hearty escarp
#

Oh yeah, I've used that premade too. It's by the book. No idea why your DM objected to that. Did they give a reason?

timid locust
#

Are you perhaps calculating your rolls incorrectly? That may make it seem like your stats are incorrect, when in reality you might be using the normal stats in the wrong way.

fluid egret
#

Reasons:
Cure Wounds is TOO STRONG
your Stats are up the roof, like you need to -2 everything

hearty escarp
#

Okay, so that first point might be because the DM is running a 2014 DND game. Niko was made by the 2024 version of the rules, where Cure Wounds is stronger.

#

The -2 to everything still makes no sense though.

timid locust
#

Cure Wounds got a buff in the latest update. It's much stronger now.

If your DM is running the older game for some reason, then it'll look like you're cheating, because they expect you to use the un-buffed Cure Wounds.

You can then go into inventory and equip your items. That will allow you to see what they add and the attack bonuses for your mace etc. I don't agree necessarily with picking scale mail. chrome bluff

Hi, quick question. There's a slot on my character sheet called "Defenses". What does that mean?

That would be for any resistances or immunities your character might have

If you were a red Dragonborn, for example, you would put “Fire Resistance” in that box

so they're determined by my species?

wheat crystal
#

Species can be one source of damage resistances or immunities. Getting the latter is really rare.

torn ermine

Species, class choices, magic items etc.

#

For example a dragon bloodline sorceror gets resistance to its dragon type.

#

So a red dragon blooded sorceror has fire resistance

wheat crystal

Other sources include but aren’t limited to:

  • Class
  • Subclass
  • Feats (special case)
  • The Wish spell
  • Magic Items
In any case if something gives you a resistance or immunity it will say so.
