there is no skilltree in dnd
a skill tree? it isnt
If your a class you get features and some have points
i dont think you know what a skill tree is
Like monks have key points or that's different
totally different
Helpp
dont worry about skill trees, they are not in dnd
ehhh, if you start at level 1 its not a lot
How tf do I learn them
mods?
youre talking about choices
How doni know I have finished level one
read the rules

Also this is way different cuz i am gonna be a dm helping my sister with a character but am a visual learner I can watch a video and get it but not the others so its really hard for me to explain things so I have to write them down idk am going crazy
reading the rules is needed, watching vids can help but reading is required
Okkk
I have the starter set so I'll read thosee
Am just really bad at reading
I get distracted easily
does this discrod not have gen vcs ?
No, as they present too much of a moderation challenge.
Hi hlo everyone I have a few questions or rather want to know a fee things, firstly I never played d&d and didn't even know rules All I know is from baldurs gate 3 first act (still playing) thats what inspired me to join this, how and where to start, how to play online (and find ppl to play with online)... I hv no clue can anyone guide me
im starting a charcter sheet using the dnd website today
i joined cause im a creative and have been watching Witcher for like a week straight and the story is just pumeling me in the best kind of way lol
from my research the dnd website has a guide there also so does this server in #learn-to-play under rules
youtube vids are avalible thats what ive been watching and already looked a local place that host games in my city weekly
Baldurs gate 3 is basically an version of dnd edited to work as a video game
Most of the rules apply but u can look on dnd beyond for the actual rules
It also has a character creatior
Hmm yeah, but what I meant to ask is can we play it online with friends or strangers like can I join any vc or similar thing here and play... And some website or smt
We don't host games on this server
But you can use #find-a-game to find a group/game to play in
Make sure to read the information carefully as it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels
Oh ok thank you, I have ppl to play with we don't know how to play thats the issue so wanted to join a few ppl who are willing to let us in and learn..
Many groups are fine with new to D&D folks playing with them but it helps a lot if folks have spent some time and effort trying to learn the core game rules/mechanics and how to use a character sheet. You don't have to memorize it all but again, being familiar is very helpful as then the group you're playing with can help answer questions as needed but also actually spend their precious playing time actually playing D&D rather then having to teach you everything.
Ya ya.. baldurs gate logics 3 of us know but real game idk if its sufficient
It can help but BG3 is very much video game first and not an accurate representation of how D&D the tabletop RPG game actually plays.
In the course of play, 90% of your players’ actions are going to either be making an attack against an enemy or forcing the enemy to make a saving throw, and thus it’s helpful if everyone at the table understands how they need to communicate their end of those things
What you most want to avoid is just throwing numbers out of your mouth - “I rolled 16” - without the context the other person needs to understand it
also, don’t tell people what you rolled, tell people the sum of your roll and the relevant modifiers - don’t say “I rolled 16” if you also add 5 to that roll, say “my attack roll is 21” or “I hit AC 21”
If you cast a spell, you need to tell the DM:
if the spell forces the target to make a saving throw;
If so, what attribute save it is;
What your spell save DC is;
And then if the DM tells you they succeed or fail, you need to tell them what the effect of the spell is
Actual dnd is more grueling, bg3 automates a lot of stuff to cut out the more tedious parts I'd say
Also lots of classes and races were edited from 5e, Githyanki requires you to buy a sourcebook to play as them
Anything not in the free rules or SRD (System Reference Document) requires purchase.
Not everything in D&D is free.
If I'm getting books on dndbeyond do I just need core rules and maybe tashas + xanathars for the majority of official rules and class content?
Well I'd first start off with just the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If you like the game well enough, then the Players Handbook would be next on my list.
Then if I were a Dungeon Master I'd consider the DM's Guidebook, Monster Manual, followed by Monster of the Multiverse (which provides more player character species options).
Then Tashas and Xanathars for even more character options and other optional rules.

For the help action is it like a touch spell and you give an ally advantage on there next roll?
Hi👋 I'm new here as well.
Hello
In the physical sense, yes, but the Help action can be say, mental, or vocal, its context dependent and open to interpretation
and the Help action can have many effects and consequences, as a general action
I see but like to use it does it have a range yk how with some actions you have to be at a certain range or right next to whatever you’re doing I guess I’m just curious on how close to your ally you have to be to help
Again context specific, but the Helper obviously has to be in a position to do so; you can help somebody from across the room if its an investigation or search, but you need to be next to them to, say, help to push an obstacle away
Ahh okay
Sometimes Help won't really work, when you think about the context. I can't help you pick a locked door, but I can help you force it open
Hayy im new in this server and ive no idea what to start with where to go what to do
how new are you to D&D?
hello same here i' m new to dnd, i have only one sesion played

Hi, i just printed the character sheet but i dont kno how to fill the blanks, where can i check what to put or the values i need to put
Follow the guidance in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Can i fill it on my own or is it recommended to be with a DM to create it?
If you don't have a DM yet, you can fill it in, but be aware that you're doing it for practice.
Mmmm so in order for me to create a proper character i must verify it with a DM prior to participate in a dungeon, am i right ?
More or less, yeah!
in a dungeon? you know dnd isnt only dungeons right?
ahh okay
So, can i fill it to practice and send the sheet in here to get a sort of a feedback?
Yep, folks do that all the time.
Oh cool. tsm
Hi there, do you guys do Play by Post games?
You can find PBP games in #looking-for-players (and maybe even #looking-for-community) occasionally, but they are rarer.
My recommendation would be to search places that specialize in play-by-post games. Check the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Discover function!
Thanks. I tried other places, like pbp reddit, but there is such a shortage that games fill in within minutes
I have been playing pbp for 25 years
I started before it was even a thing
Begun by email, then in message board formats, the then discord
But lost touch with that group of friends
And finding another group seems to be mission impossible
Understandable. Finding a compatible group is tough given how many people are out there, never mind finding one who wants to play in the same medium. But if you can't find people through PBP communities, then I would suggest the other route: find people within a D&D/TTRPG space that you like playing with and who also express interest in PBP. In other words, you could make friends out of PBP players, but you could also try making PBP players out of friends (or acquaintances, anyway).
just experienced my first pc death </3
I also had a personal computer die on me once
One moment it was fine...
And then Puff! Screen went all dark and nothing
my beloved orc barbarian sacrificed her self
Oh...
Your sacrifice will be remembered
Did it die a hero's death?
now i can play my green little freak
she was a paid bodyguard for a different character and she had in her contract that should there be a choice between saving my life and saving his, he was to choose his own life
Question
that is?
I assumed this game would have those revive scrolls like bg3. How unfortunate
it does
Those do exist
scroll of revivify
Yesss, must be expensive though
scroll of true ressurection
Is it mandatory to put in my strength dexterity constitution intelligence wisdom and charisma by class what they are best at or...no?
Fairly but not too much
is it not in bg3?
Moderately so. More rare than anything
Not mandatory, but being bad at what your class is supposed to be good at makes you a sort of liability to the party, which will likely result in less fun for everyone else. Probably not a great approach to a social/collaborative game.
Thanks
I mean you can rely on some items tho, like belt of giant strength, to make up for your weakness
For example, having a lot of Charisma reliant features and bad Charisma typically doesn't mix well
You can't rely on getting an item like that immediately, or even at all depending on the game and the DM
True, unless you plan on spending several weeks crafting it or something lol
Even crafting is up to the DM. So especially for someone newer, I'd just try to be good at things without expecting magic items
and a lot of money
Yea, tons of money...
Am trying to make a character with a character sheet for me and my sister am also dm not using my character soon but hers
I CANT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING
And am using a youtube vid
You can ask questions here and folks will answer as they're willing/able.
How do I determine speed and the others..
Have you read the basic rules yet? It’s a pretty common mistake for newcomers to jump into character creation before learning how to play, which obviously makes it way harder to understand what you’re actually doing.
It's the 5th edition one
Speed is based on species.
Kinda but not really
Maybe that's what's wrong

Yeah, the rules are fundamental to understanding how to play (including how to create a character).
Click the link in the bot post above for the “basic rules” and start at the beginning. How to play is chapter one, and character creation is chapter two
Ok thanks my sister is gonna kill me
Couldn’t be me
Just remember, you don’t have to memorize everything. Focus on picking up the basics, and for the more complicated stuff, just try to remember where it is in the rule book. Then when you’re actually playing the game, you can pull it up quickly if you need to double check anything

Hi guys may i ask an help from someone of you for writing my background in dnd?
Sure!
Though I assume you mean backstory. I recommend moving over to #character-discussion btw
Hey guys so i just got into dnd and wanted to buy a first set to play with my family. Is there any set that u can recommend me to get as starter to learn the game and also play at the same time
Hi, i wanted to know how does an online campaign works and if there is much difference with an face-to-face play or something?
You'll want to consider a starter set, Heroes of the Borderlands is the newest one, it came out in September, here's a review:
https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/52962/roleplaying-games/review-heroes-of-the-borderlands-dd-starter-set-2025
But I'd be remiss in not mentioning Lost Mines of Phandelver, the 2014 starter set, here's a review of that:
https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/49910/roleplaying-games/review-dd-starter-set
I’m a player from the 90’s who hasn’t played in 25 years. Looking to get caught up on the changes
Welcome back, what's the last ruleset you remember, 3rd Edition? Earlier?
2nd?
3rd edition. I used to have all the books from that time. My ex husband was our dm. I miss playing.
3rd Edition introduced the d20 system which is still used today, among other changes that have stuck around, so shouldn't be too hard for you to get up to speed
That’s good news! I was seeing that some species had been removed like half elf and half orc
Can we still play 2014 editions?
You might want to start with reviewing the basic rules, then you know the drill: get the core books, starting with the PHB.
2014 is to 2024 what 3.0 was to 3.5 (except less changes), they're both compatible

If varies from group to group. Some play theater withe mind and roll using a discs bot. Other groups will use a virtual tabletop like roll20.
Oh, if i wanted to start that way how could i do it?
hello! I tried to get into dnd a long time ago, but always struggled with in person dnd. Is online dnd viable and, if so, is it common to see people advertising their own games? which channel should I go to so I can find them?
Yes, very viable
Yes, very common
#find-a-game or #looking-for-dm
Other listings exist, such as on an online VTT (Virtual Table Top) like Roll 20
Typically people will use Discord to otherwise communicate
ah, thank you
Hello Everyone !
I'm a French speaking newcommer to the D&D world. Althought I'm familiar with RPG in general, know a bit how the specific DnD rules , I've actually never played per see. It looks amazing, really !
My friends and I would be looking for a French speaking DM. Do you guys have any hints / ideas ? (and althought this server is english only, I thought maybe some of you might be also French speakers / have any idea how I can find one haha)
Can you clarify what you are asking?
Are you asking how you form an online group or how do you use a virtual tabletop?
Pinging @wild folio
(a Francophone DM/player)
Why is it so hard to find people who play dnd in my area?
Ive tried card/game shops, no luck.
ive tried joining already made groups, dident work out.
Ive tried online years ago and now, was horrible and now im too shy to keep trying.
What now? its like nobody wants a beginner like me.

Hi there! I'm new to DND I know kinda the basics but I also don't know basically a single thing haha
Is there Any way people can dumb down like the point system for me? Regarding health and skills? I was trying to build a character on the website but on mobile it's a bit hard and being fairly new I don't understand a lot of the terms yet still!
By point system, what do you mean exactly?
Let me look at the screenshot I took real quick! For specifics lol
Health , ability cost/score calculations
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
I would go with standard array (described above) if you're making a character without having a group yet.
You might also want to look over the rules as D&D Beyond can be more confusing than helpful for some folks: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
wait, you can now make characters through the mobile app?
I'm using like the website
ah. on mobile that would look pretty small
Just clicked whatever link was in the uh learn to play channel
Haha it is!
what is this... a character sheet for ants?
Worse,
Mites.
i put my phone into landscape mode if i'm doing any character sheet stuff on it. it helps a little bit
I can change it to desktop mode but it makes it so much smaller, so I just keep it normal like stand still and just try to read or scroll/understand as much as possible
i meant i turn my phone on its side and tap the button so that everything orients that way. it makes the writing bigger, but i have to scroll more.
Omg the standard array helps so much haha, maybe I'll start another character sheet after this and mess with the settings a bit
I was currently doing like the customized background but I'll try to do if normally after this
Oh and yeah! I wonder how landscape would be with desktop mode on mobile
Let me try it out rq

i also find it easier to pick a background before going back and selecting which skills to become proficient as part of the class.
welcome, exon. be prepared for a whole lot of reading. being a wizard i'm sure you're used to such things.
Ive done a lot of reading but im prepared for it thanks for the welcoming im from the crazy land Of Indiana
Oh yeah! I kinda know the general of what I want my character to be since he's an old OC of mine in general
It's just kinda the struggle of converting him into the DND realm
More so like race, and possibly any special abilities
I was going for a fighter type, I wanted him to kinda be well rounded/balanced in some /most ways for like
Charisma, strength/endurance, and smarts, maybe a bit more than some
I think that's why I got confused at first since I hadnt chosen any of the options for the ability scoring
I'm from there! Don't live there currently but I kinda wished I did, I heard it gets cold there
Its been cold already need to prepare some fur coats
Compatibility is going to be a big factor. I’d recommend checking out community games like dnd adventurers league or west marches. With each one shot you play, you’ll get to know different people from the community.
Use those interactions to build history with others to seek group mates for a campaign.
while you can make a whole lot of custom stuff, picture your idea character as the end result. make a test character and level up stuff and explore to see how high of a level you need to get and what options to pick to get to your idea character. you might find you don't need to homebrew as much of the mechanical numbers to get there since some things you can get at higher levels.
then your level 1 character can start their journey to become the character you've got in mind.
Oh! What is homebrew? I didn't understand that part of the page it was like the first page of the character making and like option select, I kinda left everything as selected as it was originally
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Any unofficial mechanic
Like unofficial classes, races, etc
Ooooh okay! Got it
And yeah, he isn't the character I envision him to be yet due to him being level 1 but as he levels up I definitely think he'll get better
Sorry for bothering my fellow friends but do you guys play online or have a group that meet to play
I play online exclusively these days, but playing in-person can be fun!
Yep, all 279,737 members of this discord meet together to play D&D
as a single party. with one DM. all at the same time.
there's a looking for group channel
Nice you got jokes
That poor, poor DM.
Assuming a turn takes 2 minutes, it would take about a year for 1 round
I've been listening to my boyfriend and his friends play! Today I actually paid attention for most of it!
Basically both things, although i see in the looking for players section that there are campaings to be formed.
combat would likely end way before that. rolling initiative would be a nightmare.
This would be online though, I actually haven't heard of anyone in my city doing anything irl

Well have a great night be careful with the monsters
Btw! Are people allowed to send pictures? Like to show their character sheet? Or is it something that's just permanently locked?
You can host the image on a reputable image/file sharing service and link to it that way, making sure to follow server rules (see the section on Links).
If using DnDBeyond you can use the character sheet URL to share the sheet directly.
Oooh okay! How do I do that? So far I've only seen a option to download the PDF file
Are you on the website? Make sure your character is set to publicly viewable (under the character options) and then copy the URL from your browser and paste into Discord here.
Found it! It was like in the side settings
For forming the most compatible group, my recommendation will to start playing one shots with people. This video is great for players to and DMs to help groups figuring out thei compatibility https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4?si=9pfEF3noGlcWVddY
The best places for one shots is in community west marches games or by playing DnD adventures league
#looking-for-community should point you to west marches communities.
#1050206572535623690 , specifically the events section will point you places that host AL games.
I’m curious as to how dice goblins collect dice
Do they go by brand? Or they just take everything they see
That’s a dice-
Much like how Magpies collect trinkets
I just buy ones I think are pretty
Hello, I’m really interested in dnd. I right now have an idea for a character but i was wondering. Is it okay to just put my character sheet in text?
You could but long forms of text may be best put into a Google doc or shared on a reputable file/image sharing service and linked to here (make sure to follow the server rules regarding sharing of links).
We also have a specific channel for character discussions: #character-discussion
Oh thanks
By the way, I’m considering buying 7 sets for myself, what material dice should I buy
Howdy
Hello
Also btw being the DM what’s the right amount of having each dice
Or not right but at least flexible and nice
Hello, I’m a newbie and was wondering if I could play a game with someone. I don’t really know how this works so sorry if I’m not in the right place
Hey there!
I would suggest 2 sets for yourself like something showy and that you like so for important rolls done by your players can use some of them while you should still have enough for you.
For the players normal games are about 2-4 players so one set of each or just get a single big bag of dice for cheap.
Hope that helps.
Cuz in the essentials kit, I was looking, it had 4d6
Can I join you @remote crow
Huh?
You said you were a dm
I’m new too
One set I saw was
3d20
2d12
5d10
1d-Percent die
5d8
10d6
5d4
https://a.co/d/cZ1g6PV something like this would be fine for a starting group
Add some extra 6, 20 siders if you want to cover bases for stats and ability checks
It said something like the reason why it has a lot of d6 is because there are apparently wizard spells that goes up to 10d6 damage
Yeah but that's later levels and the players can share from each other or from a big bag of dice pool. If anything just two orders of that link i sent is more than enough and not expensive.
Okiedokie
They can also just re roll the same dice too. I did that for the longest time lol
I was just wondering what would have been the convinient amount to have
Hey there!
Do you have any questions? I might be able to help.
Could you help me create a character, I never have
I recommend using the dnd beyond free basic rules to get started with
Sure thing, do you prefer pen and paper or using the DND Beyond app? The app is waaaay easier.
Let’s do the app then
Groovy if you want, you can direct message me so we don't flood the chat.
Hello, world of DnD! I just want to ask: Where do I start in this server? Do I make my character, look for a game, or talk to people first? I'm just confused!😅
#learn-to-play helped me a lot! It gives you tej channel names to where to go too
And #channel-guide
Should I create character before I join a D&D group or after?
Oh I need to talk more here, I can't post the epic drawing our dm made of us and our party
Create a general template of the type of character you would like to play before, and then discuss background details with the dm once you join
Rules may vary between DM's but it's always helpful to understand what you're setting out to play
So I skip the background area when creating a character
You can have an idea, but nothing detailed
More like have a generalized idea of the character, and then work out details with your dm
For example, wanting to play an outlaw runt that is training under a mentor and wants to gain fame and money could be an idea
Granted, that may not work for all parties
So be ready to change you concepts
“Hunted one”?
Trama person
Like one of my backup concept characters Jackson "Jax" Wickopee, masked warlock bounty hunter armed with his trusty longarm rifle which acts as his spellcasting focus.
Where does he come from? Idk. Who is his patron? Idk. What's his goal? No idea.
Eldritch blastin’
The idea is to get darkness and infernal sight perk and then cast it on myself and shine from the cloud of darkness
Careful that your allies may not be able to see much
Hey there!
I would suggest making a character before you look for a group to see what role you can fill or even make a couple.
While you do that, you can figure out their class, species, background (how you get your skills and other stuff), and everything else with your character.
Yeah, making practice characters is my go-to recommendation on how to turn your theory knowledge into practical application
It's also just fun if you like writing!
Hi everyone, I’m new to the server and I’d really like to start participating in a campaign. I keep trying to go in the find players or find dm channels but it won’t let me post at all.
Do /looking-for
Then it should give you recommendations on either looking for DMs or players. You’ll get a form, fill it out
Okay! Thank you!
Oh the issue is it won’t let me type
On this channel
Or any text based channel
Ohhh okay thank you!
Sorry if this is a goofy question but does anyone know where I can download a character sheet for AL? Thanks in advance!
just a normal dnd sheet will suffice
Hey quick question what website would you recommend for me to use to keep up with character sheets and know what they do because I’ve been trying to use dnd beyond but in order to unlock all spells and subclasses I have to buy the books which I don’t want to do
Any site that gives you access to paidd content is piracy, and not something you should be asking on the official server
Ok my apologies
Read #find-a-game
Ok thanks man
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Ok
Just wanna know
If i were really new player anyone have a tips on getting a campaign?
Make a post on #looking-for-dm , respond to #looking-for-players posts, and pray. It might take a while
Ohhh okay, thanks you are really nice👍
No, I’m Nugget. Who’s really nice?
Nugget 👍
yo uhh i lowk wanna like start playing dnd and i have friends that might be willing to play but none of them know anything about it and i also don’t know much besides like yk what the game is kinda about does anyone have any advice on like how i should get started?
Is the guidebook worth buying?
Hello! You should read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
The players Handbook? Sure, it’s quite handy. Should be your first book purchase if you’re buying the books.
I mean I know about the game to a certain extent but idk each spell, race, class specific things etc
You don't have to know everything
I've been playing for years and I still don't know everything lol
(and I still mess things up occassionally - that's okay)
I've never actually played a real game but I'm still a bit overwhelmed by the amount of items spells races and origins
And I don't really know anything about spellcasters either

There's a specific section in the free rules that goes over spellcasting.
Here's the section: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells
Could someone explain me what is an opportunity attack
As a newcomer myself (about a year) don't worry about spells or items. Depending on the dm you'll get Magic items on a case by case basis.
I'd say just focus on one thing at a time, start with race, gear, spells. Whatever class you want to play, let that be your focus. Cuz otherwise the plethora of stuff may overwhelm you.
Cuz that's how I started. I just picked a class, read everything I could about it and went on from there. Even before I started playing.
A melee attack a creature can make against another creature leaving their reach
It also consumes a reaction
How do people as DM’s figure out who attacks with initiative i always get clogged up especia if one enemy dies then idk who attacks when
I break the enemies into similar groups - say, all the archers, all the skirmishers, and the boss. Each group rolls initiative once. When I note down the PCs' initiative counts, I put the enemies in the running order at the appropriate point. Then all members of that group go when their initiative count is reached. If there are several in one group, number them arbitrarily, and have them go in numerical order.
The one with the highest result goes first, and then down in order. it's mainly just a matter of having a neat list to remember. No way to remember a bunch of numbers from one fight to the next
But also the above, makes it lot easier having all simialr creatures, especially minions, act on the same initiative number instead of bunch of separate turns
So you would make all the enemies attack in a row and all the pcs attack in a row?
So if we roll initiative once when do we toll it next time? Next combat or?
yup
Yep, you roll initiative for each creature for each combat separately
i only do this with large groups
No, each PC has their own initiative count, and each monster or group of similar enemies has an initiative count. You run the whole lot from highest to lowest, each person going at their own count.
Next combat, unless there's a specific reason to roll again during a combat (for instance, if a third party hostile to both sides shows up, and the two existing sides cease fire)
Beacuse we were playing lost mines of Phandelver and on the Cragmaw Hideout place and 2 players in the party failed their DC to climb up and got left out for the whole fight i didnt know what to say one was leftnon 2 hp
let them roll and try again on their turns
So they would roll initiative also
Yes
I'd keep tracking their movement during the combat - it might take a few rounds to get up, but they could swing the balance when they get there
yes
But they were real low on hp
that doesnt mean they arent in combat
Outside of combat, generally a skill check would represent all of your attempts at something, since oftentimes there isn't a time limit, so its a good idea to prevent rolling until they succeed
Meanwhile during combat, its lot more reasonable to allow repeated attempts at checks, since it will take time and generally consume your action to do so, so it wont just leave someone completely out like might have happened here
They also didnt wanna risk dying getting up the ruvle
Low hp doesnt mean a creature cant fight, just that they need to be lot more careful about it 😌
then let them be in combat still, they can do other things
So in combat they can roll checks? Also i didnt know if they can speak to an enemy mid combat i just said they were angry 😭
"Ah, we are in combat. I am now mute and deaf."
Youre right maybe i shouldve allowed use of spells that counted as half covered
Yep, just takes their turn's action
And speaking is usually free, though attempts at actually convincing someone might take your whole action to make a persuasion or intimidation check, for example
Oh, you can take practically any action in combat, although if its duration is measured in minutes rather than rounds you're still going to be doing it when combat ends - if you live.
Also doesnt seem like the player was left out of combat, and moreso chose to stay out of it. One option is of course if you dont want them to just stay waiting is to try and remain stealthy as a stray enemy is looking for them, to give a bit of excitement, so their goal isn't necessarily to fight, but to survive 😏
Right right beacuse he was scared as he had 2 hp and didnt wanna die
Its our first session we are all new im lucky my friend who is a veteran helped
Hello there 🤠👋🏽🤠 guys thanks for having me here DnD fan and 2D artist nice to meet y'all
Hi hi! I'm new to the server but not to the game; It's good to be here
heyo, i have created my first character and would love to get your guys insight into her. im thinking of tweaking her reason to go out into the world. i played Session 0 with her so far, that sets up the premise of having to deal with a necromancer controlled by the BBG, but the way i played her doesnt fully make sense with the previous backstory i had:p
(i put the same message in #character-discussion – sorry if it comes off as spam. wont post it anywhere anymore)
That happens more than you’d think.
i do like that though! i like that i can feel her having its own rhytym, and adjusting her backstory/motivation will make her more immersive
Hi there!
Im soon to be buying the master tier and aiming at a book that has the "Locathah" in it to share with a friend.
Will that unlock a playable race? I just see monsters listed and when I click the spices option I get "unhandled"
Cast a wide net by searching as many avenues as possible, be proactive, and be patient.
Action economy goes crazy in that scenerio
That's a pretty standard method
Why? No-one's getting more actions.
Yeah I mean if ya split it up accordingly it isn't too crazy.

Either party can shut down the encounter immediately or bad guys can with one giant wave on either side. Split up is fine yes
Yeah, that's what I meant
Welcome!
Oh ok yeah thats fine. I just thought it was like old style British war.
Fire reload. Then the other team fires reload
Howdy, folks
I have a question. Oscar the Grouch: Nature or Nurture?
#non-dnd-topics would be the spot for that. Questions related to getting started with the game go here!
Thank you. It is an essential life question that I must answer before proceeding with anything leisurely.
Fine, thanks. Anything you need to know about D&D?

That established, what are folks mostly playing here these days? 5E? I played ADND 2E a teensy bit back in the day
This server is pretty largely focused on 5e (2014 and 2024). We do have #dnd-elder-editions for discussions about previous editions.
I have no idea what this "2024 rules" are but yeah 2014 5e is what I play
mostly 5.5E for the last few months
2E, from what I heard, was like... the least enjoyable variation. Though if memory serves, I think it's what they based Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 on.
video games are not a good indicator
true
Actually, another question (as I had been reading through some stuff on here last night): what would "Looking for a Community" entail? Would that mean, like, looking for a whole group as opposed to just a DM?
Hey folks! Please keep this channel clear for new to D&D folks to get help with learning the core game rules and mechanics. Thanks!
Prolly westmarch
Westmarches, games with multiple DMs or multiple groups of players, servers that run multiple D&D games
Also servers that need both DMs and Players
Interesting... I'll have to do some research on Westmarches. Haven't heard of those.
I think this is a good definition.
Westmarch is a style of play that commonly is run on a separate Discord server (or similar service). These types of games are run in the same universe and the events of one group of adventurers can impact those of another. Groups and DMs may change regularly. They're ideal for pick-up games or if you want to be part of a bigger, more interwoven narrative. Think of them a little bit like an "MMO" for tabletop games.
Hey dudes
welcome
I've always wanted to play dnd but everyone who Plans to play with me just gives up on actually setting it up
So I've never played before
Ok, another quick question: if I were to post an ad looking for a DM, would I need to send a direct message to the bot itself? Or type the commands elsewhere?
No you type the bot commands in a channel here on the server - anywhere that you can type
Welcome to the server! Hopefully you’ll find a great D&D group to play with!
Gotcha (sorry. More of a Discord-n00b question. For all my years using Discord, I barely bumble about it by the skin of my teeth)
No worries! Perhaps this questions and answers here can help other users!
hey new to dnd how should i get started playing? (ive got literally nothing rn...)
You should totally buy dice
They're yummy
Can someone please message me and help me understand things?
This question will anger some people, but is DND quite literally just dice-throwing with a touch of RP?
Or is there things I missed here?
heard there were like charecter sheets and stuff
so thats there ig
but uhh no clue otherwise...
No, not at all
So to start playing, I need a character sheet, some dice and that's it?
No
The game has rules
A character sheet isn’t freeform
Also you need a DM
The combat is more akin to an turn-based RPG than just rolling dice
ahhh alr also with your attributes are there like a set number of attribute points you can assign to each like cyberpunk?
or is it more like skyrim where you kinda js do stuff and level it?
really lost in general...
Have you considered reading the rules
that in the server...?
They’re on D&D beyond
alr bettt
Man I really need to get back into dnd
Can somebody pwease help me find a group to play with? 🥺
okay yeah so really confusing what am i trying to read exactly i landed on classes and that got me onto some pay page and now im on aberrant heir and acolyte basic rules...
oh wait thats backgrounds nevermind
The basic rules are also linked in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play

The short version of D&D is this:
- The DM describes the situation.
- Each player describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results. Repeat the cycle.
It's make-believe with rules to act as a shared language and to defer to instead of the "Nuh uh/Yuh huh" that happens when playing pretend as kids.
Sorry I probably worded that wrong haha. It might not even be called systems. I meant about like the versions of the game? There's all the editions and then I've seen a lot of stuff that's 'homebrewed', which I understand is just what players come up with on their own? And I've also seen things from bg3 and even arcane and my guy I do not follow 🥲
There are multiple editons of D&D, yes. The current and most popular version is fifth edition (which has its 2014 and 2024 iterations). Homebrew is unofficial material (worlds, items, classes, etc.) made up by fans.
I have a question
How do you determine hit points armor class and proficiency bonuses when making a character sheet
Hit Points are based on your class and Constitution score.
Armor class is based on what armor you're wearing and, in certain instances, your Dex bonus.
Your proficiency bonus is based on your level. Each class has a chart to show this. For example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#BarbarianFeatures
All of this is covered in the rules! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Ok thank you
Out of curiosity, have your read through the basic rules yet? You should definitely do that before jumping into character creation. Its extremely difficult to make a character if you don't understand how to play the game yet
I have read them before but that was a few years ago and starting to realize I should read it again
Yep you definitely should. Especially since there was a new version of the basic rules release in September of last year.
Ok I’ll do that now thank you
I am new to dnd and I want to dm a one shot for my friends could anyone give me a quick overview of what I need to do
Prep a short story that proactively gets the players to do something, as you don’t have much time in a one shot. Maybe an important NPC or three, a list of names, familiarise yourself with the rules and be ready to improvise
Learn most of the rules, or at least where to find them if you don’t know them all
This guide is about as condensed as I've found: https://howtogm.guide/
Whats the difference between a traditional game and a community game. Mainly the community game part that I'm not sure of
A community game might possibly entail a pool of players, DMs, and games rather than a single consistent group playing together.
I might have over spend and bought player handbook dm handbook and monster manual
Okay I kind of get it so if I would get into a community its just different everytime. Does your character sheet get saved between games or just fresh everytime. Tbh I prob should stick with traditional seems like I'd be a bit to remember
I get very exited about stuff and just wanna read all there is to know
I would expect your character remains the same, but the group (including maybe the DM) would change. But that may not be true of all community games!
Which books are the most useful if I wanna make my own campaign
I am not buying a starter set bc I bought some books but wanna know which one first bc for 2 I have to wait until Christmas
The core rules should be plenty for that. (And even then, you don't need them.)
Is that the player handbook?
Or dm handbook
Player’s Handbook, then Monster Manual, then Dungeon Master’s Guide
The Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and DMG are the core rules. But the most important is the PHB.
You don’t really need any of them though. Maybe ask your players to lend you the PHB
We are all first timers
I bought all the books to just read anyways but it’s good to know they are useful
Yep, you'll get hours of use out of all three!
I am just really invested in all monsters and species and classes and I am so exited to read
The player’s handbook is nice, because it has most of the subclasses, feats, and backgrounds for players. It also has 1 race, I believe
The 2024 ones?
Both have that stuff for their respective edition
What’s respective edition
Google tells me the book includes 10 races
It doesn’t really matter ty all for your help now I am even more exited about everything so thank you very much ❤️
Happy adventuring!
One last question where would I be able to find all the different races
Is there like a book I can read
The PHB has most (if not all) of what's in the 2024 rules. Monsters of the Multiverse has more options, with some lore.
Is monsters of the multiverse a campaign or a book with more information I can absorb into my brain
It's not a campaign, no. It's a supplement with player options and some lore.
Heheheheheheh I will look into that to know everything there is to know
Fifty years and the biggest setting in fiction—you're giving yourself quite a task. Good luck!
I will study this until the says I’ve died
Wdym biggest setting
Will I still be doing this when I am 70+
The Forgotten Realms has the most words devoted to it than any other, in any medium.
I can handle it how hard can it be
The creator of the setting has basically been doing that.
What is forgotten realms
It's one of D&D's settings.
It's a place where adventures happen.
hi iv played 1 game of dnd and it was a one shot but im looking for a campaign. where can i find one

I can just do a 50 year long campaign then
That’ll work then I can study a lot
I wanna play this forever and ever until people question me about my sanity
i know i have been so obsessed
I am almost gonna buy a fourth book but then id really be overspending
I’ll refrain from doing that
Yeh….
its a great game
I won’t I don’t think my parents will like it
Even though I badly want it but it’s just something I am pationate about for now if I like it might buy it later
nice, how many games have you played
One session
same
i was the DM for mine i watched like 3 videos just so i had a little clue on what i was doing.
I was dead before we even went into combat
ah
I am gonna try dming
it is good fun but you have to be mentally prepared

All though Afrikaans is closer to Dutch
Welcome! Just so you are aware, it is part of the rules of this server to speak english only
Gulp
yeah
What if sometimes I misspell things so bad it looks like another language
been there
My friends translate that for me always
Last time I played a dnd session I was a humanoid purple slime monk (best description idk races) who came down in a meteor and made a little monk school inside of it making it my house
But I wasnt good at all at understanding
my first session my sister died to a fish
Ouch
yeah
I died bc a goblin crit
damn
I almost died to a giant who splattered me onto a tree then a vampire sucked me up like 30 minutes afterward and I died
Brutal
might be the worst one

Thanks!!
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
There's also a program on roll20 that will walk you step by step through setting up a new character. Might be better to do it just straight on the sheet for your first time so you understand what's happening, but roll20s character creator is so fast
Thanks this is super helpful, do you know the difference between the 2014 and 2024 creations? Should I choose one over the other when making my first charactr
Anytime I save my new character on ddb it never saves the guys equipment or weapon
imo 2024 is basically more streamlined???
there are some cool new classes like bard has a bunch of new subclasses
monk got a revamp
if you know 2014 though you'lll be able to play 2024 pretty easily
ppl are calling it 5.5e because it's basically 2014 with a few tweaks
i would go 2024 personally but they're pretty compatible imo
you can play a 2014 module in 2024 without much editing
Are you clicking the button to equip the items on the character sheet (so they show up in actions and affect armor class etc), or is it literally not saving any items you have added to their inventory?
Please make sure to follow server rules and not share personally identifying information such as exact age - we unfortunately have had creeps specifically target minors and that’s one reason why we ask folks not to share those kinds of details here.
Heyo guys
Ohhh sorry
hello, im trying to find a homebrew class for Rain-Junkie's Dragon Knight class. I was trying to transfer the subclass over myself but my brain is breaking thinking im not setting it up correctly. I have a link if anyone might be able to help me unless they know of a build thats already been made
PLease use #homebrew to discuss homebrew and it's implementation

I have not, thank you
The two additional bot posts tell you how to find games.
To help with that I recommend checking out D&D adventurers league.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Is the mage slayer feat worth taking? It falls into my lore background like absolutely perfectly but if its buns I’d rather not take it
New to dnd want to get into a game and learn but everybody I know either is in a campaign or they say they want to and never do anybody ever run one shots or small campaigns. My dms are open for dnd talk only.
It’s situational, but very very cool when you can use it
I suggest looking at #find-a-game , if you wanna find a game
My background is literally he was part of an anti magic criminal syndicate
I feel like it’d be a crime not to take it
Then take it
I wonder if there's such a thing as loot priority in dnd, like should the nicest armor go to the martials or the spellcasters
only as far as each party's priorities go
For example, a magic item that only certain classes can use would only go to those classes, or armor would only go to someone who can wear it without suffering massive penalties for not having the training, or weapons to someone who can use them well
Assuming everyone in the party has medium armor proficiency in that case, who should the nicest piece of medium armor go to (so just a piece of armor with no special effects but higher AC than normal)
Whoever is being attacked the most
But really this is mostly for the party to discuss
Its the grey lines that confuse me, class specific equipment isn't as hard
we have very little context
Hello there
wsp everyone
Evening! Finally made the time to learn and read up on the rules with all the helpful links and posts on here.
Hello, I’m like brand new to dungeons and dragons and REALLY wanna get into it and learn all about it, I don’t really know what I’m doing so any help would be awesome and greatly appreciated. Have a good day/night wherever you are
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Oo thank you
Hello, very new to DND and would like some help in finding resources on starting out and maybe some tips are welcome
I found the #learn-to-play section to be helpful and informative, was reading up on all of it today. Maybe we both can join a game together @onyx stump if timezones allow.
erm hey everyone! My names sienna and im an ABSOLUTE begginer to DnD, i know little to nothing about it, but im getting into fantasy alot latley and think this games sounds super interesting, i dont own the game at all, i just am looking around and joining servers in hopes someone is willing to help me understand the game and give me some advice on where to start!
any advice is appreciated
Hello! Welcome to the hobby, you’ll have a great time. I recommend you read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have!
Oh, and I highly recommend reading the #channel-guide , just to help you navigate the server
I haven’t a Scooby Doo what I’m doing but character creation was fun
will do! thanks so much
If ya want, feel free to send the character into #character-discussion and we’ll review it.
Like say his stats and stuff and class?
Do you have a character sheet?
I do
Is it a physical or online sheet?
Online
Could you send the link of the character sheet?
Oh yeah lemme see
I would love to!
Is it okay for a completely new player to start with a character with a spellcasting class?
Yes
They’re a bit more complex, so more help/guidance is preferred, but it’s perfectly learnable
They also teach resource management very well
-# the hard way
I tried my hand at a character sheet in DNDBeyond, and is it okay for it to have a lot of blanks? Its mostly in the backstory part tho
Usually, you want the backstory itself filled out at least. But for ideals, flaws, etc. you can describe that through your actions
They’re nice to have, but not mandatory at least in my experience
Having a backstory is needed 99% of the time tho
Do I need to mention specific places, organizations, etc. for a backstory? I'm not familiar with the worldbuilding yet
Best not to.
That'll depend on your DM. Until you join a game, you'll usually not know anything about the setting.
What you can do is frame your backstory in general terms. Did you come from a big city or a humble fishing village? Did you study at a prestigious facility or some little temple tucked away in the mountains? That kind of thing.
Before you find a game it's often a good idea to use the Three Sentence Backstory: where you're from, what shaped you, why you adventure. You can put the essentials down, something to share with your fellow players so they get an idea of who you're playing. You can always build it out in more detail if needed but start with the basics.
Hello, im javi

Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
(And when it comes to ability scores, you want the Standard Array method.)
I download a app were you can create de character card and I used, but I don't know if that app is completely trustworthy
(Sorry if my english is bad I speak Spanish and I still learning English jeje)
D&D Beyond is the official site and app.
Al right
We'll I create my character there
Come see us in #character-discussion when you have something. Good luck!
Okey thanks

Good morning, I am fairly new to DnD and have been playing some with an ai DM app, but I am not familiar with a large portion of the game, mostly just understand simple combat, long story short I want to learn more and have some fun playing, I have made an attempt to build a character on the beyond app, but not sure how to join games yet?
See above: #dnd-newcomers message
And feel free to come share your character in #character-discussion if you want it checked over.
I was reading that but don’t see the channels in the discord do I just text the command?
i wanna play it for first time
#find-a-game has more information.
i never did just watch one yt video
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Ok I added the channels
How would I share a character if I can’t post the character sheet?
On D&D Beyond, go to Manage, set the visibility to public, then get the sharing link.
Comes out like this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/94809091

@timid locust do you guys have campaigns designed for newcomers?
We don't host campaigns on the server itself. This server does have a group-finder in the lfg channels, which you can read #find-a-game to look for a newbie friendly game (if a posting doesn't explicitly list, it's always worth it to ask)

Hi everyone 🤗 I am a new dnd player (will be playing my first campaign in January) and I’m nervous to choose a class. I think most of the people I’m playing with are going the barbarian/fighter class so im wanting to maybe be a magic character but worried about the complexity? Does anyone have advise?
Magic characters can certainly be a little more complex than martial characters, but with the right prep, then you'll be fine.
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
I still don't trust that list, myself
I don't agree with all of the placements, but this table should give you a good overview of the complexity level for each class
It’s opinionated for sure lol
The important thing to remember is that nothing is so complex that you can't learn it. A newcomer can play as any class they like. Its just a matter of the work involved to understand the options and abilities available to you
My personal recommendations for more straightforward casters would be: Bard, Cleric, or Sorcerer.
im a fair beginner ish player too and what i find to be the chillest most easy class to play is for myself is warlock
you get a bit of both fighting and casting so its pretty fun to make u decide too!
Warlock is a good middleground between simplicity and strategy
why is monk in high complexity
Good question!
though i personally like to do bard cause i relate kinda but warlocks chill for a non specialty magician
I don't know. This list is quite... interesting
Monk is not a highly complex class
Ik Baldur's Gate is a heavily simplified version of DND but from what I can tell Monk is just punch, then punch more
And a kick sometimes
You certainly can play Monk like that
the bot mightve meant like how complicated it is to do all the attributes to ur fists and the extra actions and stuff
maybe idk
Because of their combat action options, I bet. When to push and when to topple, etc.
yeah this
Fair
To be clear, the list actually comes from the 2024 PHB. The bot just puts in text form for discord
My favorite part of push is doing an alley-oop to your teammate
You've got to read the combat map, spot threats and opportunities, and pick the right move for the circumstances. Compared to the other free martial classes I'd agree it takes a bit more figuring.
Fun, though.
Monk also isn't that tanky compared to other martials
i mean the 24 phb is a whole new can of worms esp their subclass removals 😭
Is it really that much more complex compared to rogue though
just when i got into dnd they had to change it up lmaooo
Especially not early on, so Monk is even more strict with positioning
Rogue isn't that bad once you give it a try, just sneak attack whoever your martials are hugging atm
The 2024 rules didn't remove any subclasses, they just picked a few to update. The existing subclasses are still available.
You can get away (if not outright encouraged) to do ranged combat as Rogue
Rogue also has disengagement tools, iirc Monk doesn't like most martial classes
they removed college of swords if im not wrong
i might be tho
Monks are more your controller type. Knocking folk down, shifting them around, grappling to prevent movement and all bare-handed if you want.
They didn't, no. You can still pick College of Swords with the updated ruleset.
yeah i see now, they removed all the proficiencies cause it was too broken it seems
mb
most
I'm not really sure what you're referring to, regarding proficiencies
longsword rapier weapon stuff :((
i can get it through a feat i think but it was kinda nice
Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, bards on the while no longer have those weapon proficiencies
yup, also the half elf removal was a lil confusing until i realised you can be half anything now
Half Elf was not removed as a species option. I'm also not sure what your referring to regarding 'half anything'.
In fact, a new option for half Elf was just released with the latest book
Hello
then lowk i might just be stupid 💔 or gettign the wrong info
Half Elves are back?
I'd recommend actually looking into the new rules and giving them a read yourself, rather than maybe misremembering something you heard online somewhere
got it mb ill keep it in mind
They never left, but were recently reprinted under the name Khoravar
That's pretty understandable. During the lead up to the release of the 2024 rules, where was a playtest period where the developers shared test versions of many of their ideas and content that may or may not eventually make it into the new books. There's a lot of misinformation still floating around because of things that were true during the playtest which didn't make it into the final version of the rules
So its pretty important to read the rules for yourself, rather than trusting what you see online
Now I'm curious. Thought the way it was to be was pick which of your heritages best represented your character and use that set of species features.
That's correct
Lore wise are they basically Half Elves or are they their own race now
Right, so until this new publication half-elf and half-orc weren't their own distinct choices in 2024. I think that's where the confusion arose.
You could still pick the outdated species if you wanted. They didn't lock out Half Elf or Half Orc in the rules anywhere
True enough. Apply Tasha's rule and make no picks for racial ASIs and you're good to go.
i see i see
yes it seems thats where i messed up
lol it was my first time wtih a phb too so i read the old and new one
Would it be nonsensical for a gnome to have the background of house medani heir from Eberron forge of the artificer
If you look in to it the only dragonmark house that is for gnomes is house sivis
The lore of my character is I’ve ran away from home so actually picking a dragonmark house seems to make things work out a lot story wise
I’m playing an artificer from the new book and gnomes go crazy with artificer
But in the book that updates artificer there isn’t really a gnome dragonmark house that is built for artificer
That sounds like a question that can be answered in #dnd-lore. This channel is meant to be used for explaining the basics of how to play the game. Eberron houses don't really fit in that description
Does the whole house have to be a good fit? Adventurers are already exceptional.
Who's online
According to the server listing? About 59,000 people.
LOL!
what do people think about Dragon of IceSpire peaks for first campaing for new players and new dm
played once some random campaing just to get the rules and things
I imagine #dm-discussion could weigh in more, but I've read through Icespire Peak.
- On the pro side, it's essentially a series of quests, which will probably be familiar to you and your players if you have any video game experience. It might also be easy to just skip parts the table isn't vibing with.
- On the con side, it is disconnected, so it might not give enough experience with making a story cohere. (Maybe the disjointedness will force you to make it happen!) And there's not as much help for the new DM as in the more recent starter sets like Stormwreck Isle or Heroes of the Borderlands.
Up to you whether all of that will be a selling point or a drawback.
It’s an amazing start
Okay so i played Lost mines of Phandelver with the same group for a bit but we had a break some players couldnt play but we got the jist of DnD and my only problem with dming was the town (its not even that big) i couldnt just idk why get my mind to work with all the npcs and stuff. Also id take recommendations for good new dm kinda shortish modules
I'd recommend Lost Mines of Phandelver instead, as razowing says, Icepsire has its pros and cons - and you can add Icespire "quest board" content to your Lost Mines game (they take place basically next door to each other)
Or, nm 🙂 You tried that
The newer starter sets (Stormwreck Isle and Heroes of the Borderlands) would get my vote.
Not a fan of Lost Mines?
i didnt like it that much too basic imo
I like LMoP a ton, but it does nothing to onboard a new DM.
All the starter sets are basic
If you want something fun, you’ll have to jump in the deep end
I know some folks like the revised Sunless Citadel as an intro adventure, but it's not presented as content for the new DM/group.
Hm, true...it's just fairly easy to run
For the most part. It has some weaknesses, but that's a separate channel and conversation!
You are definetly right the Dragon of icespire peak is not so story focused more so quest thingies i need to maybe look into something else
I'm also a fan of the string-together-one-shots approach and you've got yourself a campaign that ends whenever you feel like. Not as epic as a long-term game, but I don't think I'd recommend a long-term commitment to figure out how to run games.
idk i just like searched begginer module and i got that as a recommendation im still new to dnd
Yes, after all, what is a campaign if not a series of connected one-shots?
Hence the starter sets!
Hi, I’m pretty new to DnD and am currently working through 5e plus an compatible expansion.
I am wondering if others have had experiences with play by post campaigns and what resources are good for that. Thanks
Resources in what sense?
So I never had the opportunity to play but have watched others online play like vldl and figured id give it a shot iv always been interested though any ideas of where or how to start

Hello
Is there anyone here starting a complain anytime in the near future? I’ve always been interested in dungeons and dragons but never played myself
I assume you mean campaign?
Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game to join and play D&D
Yes I mean campaign my bad
Hey everyone
So is the dungeon master role similar to a story teller/narrator for whatever campaign they design and/or utilize?
Also the referee, yes
Been wanting to play some, though I am curious how the virtual table tops work I have only played with a text based ai dm so far?
Well, it’s a map with the characters on it
You can fill in your character sheet. It tracks your health and stuff.
That’s pretty cool, I take it you have to purchase the software to use it?
Know that an AI probably got a lot of rules wrong, so unless you’ve already read them, I suggest you do so before joining a game
Nope, there’s some free ones. Our group uses roll20.
?tag new online
You don’t need to read everything, just enough to control your character quickly
Can someone explain how a character sheet works?? thank you
?tag new sheet
Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether it’s a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
thank you!!!!!
question! sorry for asking alot, but is one player allowed to have multiple Original characters? like say they have a few different campaigns with different DMs, are they allowed to have a different character for say 2/4 campaigns?
Yup! You can have as many characters as you want
You personally can have unlimited characters. But at the table you'll (usually) only be playing one.
Except of course, if they die
Its surprising how resilient player characters are... and even if they die, new campaign arc to get them back!
thanks so muchh! thats great to know
Considering that we’ve had 7 PCs die with no hope of reviving them, I’d say it depends on the DM
Mind you we’ve had maybe 6(?) sessions so far
It's decidedly unusual to die that often in 5e

Build as in find players for or build as in world building?
I think more of find a campaign to start like a starters group run through that then find a good DM and build a good campaign ourselves once we learn the ropes
That'd be through the instructions in #find-a-game then. If a listing in the lfg channels doesn't explicitly advertise itself as newbie friendly it's always worth it to ask

Quick stupid question, can you use two 1st level spell slots to cast a 2nd level spell? If not is it a common homebrew rule?
Nope! I've also never heard that as a homebrew rule before, either.
its not a common rule at all. Seems very unbalanced
I suppose the closest you'll get to that are groups that use the spell points rules variant, but that's also very uncommon from what I've seen
To a minor extent, sorcerers can do this through sorcery point conversion)
(It's a very lossy conversion, but still)
What is a reaction
It is a special action you can take even if it isn't your turn. You can take only one reaction per combat round.
The opportunity attack is the most common reaction.
Where can I post photos i made some cool art of a very unique character i made

Can someone explain The D20 roll super easy and simple to me, together with ability scores and modifiers. I’m a bit stuck and i wanna DM for my friends. We are all new and no one wanna DM instead of me
d20 roll for what?
Ability checks and saving throws and attacks. It says i have to add the Proficieny bonus but as a new player i dont really get how this works
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#D20Tests
Your proficiency bonus is listed in your class table. A level one character has a proficiency bonus of +2.
Also if i see at zombies hitpoint 22 (3d8 + 9) does that mean roll D8 three times? And what does the +9 indicate. Sorry for these many questions. Will prob have more and more along the way
You can roll to randomly determine a creature’s Hit Points, or take the average. In that case it would be 22.
For max hitpoints, either use the average (22) or roll a d8 three times and add 9.
3d8+9 is roll three d8's (or one d8 three times!) and add 9 to the result, you'll see this forumla everywhere, #d#+#
the +9 is calculated from the zombie's constitution modifier btw, but that doesnt have to concern you as long as you arent making your own monster statblocks
Now i have 1 more question. Difficulty classes and Armor classes. I see Task difficulty on my starter set rulebook of Stormwreck isle. What do these mean?
Thanks alot for all the help btw guys! I really appriciate this
My english ain’t great so reading through this book 4 times already is a struggle
Difficulty class and Armor class are the number you need to equal or exceed to succeed on a d20 test
when you roll for an ability check or saving throw, there is a target you need to meet or beat, that is call DC (Difficulty class)
same thing for hitting an enemy with an attack roll, but the target number is called armor class (AC)
For example, let’s say you want to make a perception check to spot a hidden trap, and the DC is 15. You roll a d20, then you add your wisdom modifier. If you are proficient in the perception skill then you also add your proficiency bonus. Add those 2 or 3 numbers together and that is your total for the check. If that is equal to or greater than 15, you succeed and spot the trap
Okay and for enemies i see u rol like a 4d8 against Violet Fungus. And on my charachter sheet i see greatsword. In melee (against a target within 5 feet of you) you can attack with your greatsword. Roll 1d20 + 3 to see if you hit
Does this mean u still just roll a 4d8 or do you then roll a d20
The (18) 4d8 there is for the Hit Points. Hit Points are what you lose when something damages you.
Say a fighter swings at it with a sword (the Attack action). The fighter rolls a d20 and adds their proficiency bonus (2) and Strength bonus (2). Say they rolled a 10 on the die. Add it all up.
You then compare their total (14 here) to the Armour Class (AC) of the target. In this case, it's 5.
If the fighter's result is equal or better than that 5, they've hit and get to roll for damage. Say the fighter was using a longsword, that's a d8. They roll that, add their Strength modifier, and that's how many Hit Points the violet fungus loses. If it goes to zero, it's dead.
How do ya’ll explain better then the starter set guide book 😔

I kind of know the rough idea but the things I wanted to know about was, what makes a crit hit happen and how all the strength and dexterity etc. work
