What do I need to start playing dnd
I say how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Tbh idk maby like spels becus then i can use ise like my ise sona
Ise sona?
I get ise is ice, but what is sona
My fursona
my recommendation is draconic sorcerer in that case
Same
decent amount of ice spells, not too complicated, and you can even boost those spells, plus you reinforce your theme
if you follow my recommendation, go sorcerer at level 1, and when you reach level 3, pick draconic sorcery as your sorcerer subclass
What is a subclass
a kind of specialisation. every class gets those
For a real world analogy, a dentist is a subclass of a doctor
Any video or a paragraph explaining all this
Probably a video somewhere, but I don’t know any specifically
And it’s too much info for one paragraph
Yup for a written document! There's the Basic Rules linked in #learn-to-play as well as this channel's pins
Found it. There was a playlist explaining all this
If you're talking about Handbooker Helper, keep in mind:
- It was made for the now outdated/old 2014 game
- It's not a replacement for learning the rules, just a supplement
In any case it is a lot of information, so I suggest focusing your reading past the foundational stuff (the section titled "Playing the Game"). For example if you want to play a Fighter, you don't need to read the Paladin class page, nor any other class page.
Okay thank you for your help
Cool
hello i am a newcomer
Welcome!
If you have any questions feel free to ask!
well mostly about my character shet, could i send it to you n u give me notes etc?
You could DM it, though I suggest also posting it either here or in #character-discussion to get more aggregate feedback
will do
If you made it on D&DBeyond, it’s as simple as making sure the character is set to public and sending the share link. If you made via some other method (e.g. physical, PDF) you can upload it to a trusted filesharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that instead.
You can also export a DND beyond sheet to a PDF and upload that as well for a more physical sheet look if that helps you to visualize!
okay send inquires for some games wish me luck
Do most dms like to start characters out at lvl 1 or 3 ?..
Gotcha ty
It's super individual. But it might be worth making copies of a character to plan out what their sheet might look like at various levels. Leave the equipment as is from starting, focus on your levels, features and feats.
can somenoe help me pls
with what?
I don't know how to properly level up my ranger he's already level four and i'm a little dyslexic so I didn't want to explain to me
what are you using for your character sheet? is this d&d beyond?
Sorry About that
No
My dm send me a character sheet through download
I can head to a party and share my screen
okay and it needs to be leveled up to level 4? do you have a link to the character sheet?
In short:
- Adjust your HP / max HP based on your class (Ranger is a d10 class)
- Adjust the number of hit die you have (You’ll have 4d10 now)
- Write down any new features your class gives you based on your class table. If you have a choice write down what choice you made here (At level 4 you can take the Ability Score Improvement feat or another of your choice that you qualify for).
No I understand that at the same time , I don't reading in spelling , is not my forte
I need hands on directions
Where can I find group to play D&D with? I have been searching for a while to find website or server but I kinda start to get overwhelmed, I am a newbie

@ripe finch @karmic oriole the free rules are linked above, read them and ask any questions you might have
as a beast master (subclass ranger level 3)..can i create a Beast of the sea using an octopus ? from what i understood the stat block will be only "beast of the sea" ...and the rule is kinda vague "choosing a kind appropriate for that stat block"... does that mean only like sea creatures for sea beast or does it mean the size should also be Medium ?
an octopus can be medium sized
and can i ignore the " breath underwater " trait of the octopus stat ? since it will only be the beast of the sea stat
so it can breath on land 😄
Yep. The only downside to using the Beast of the Sea on land is that it will be moving very slowly.
Note that you're not turning a creature into a Beast of the Sea. You're also not using the Octopus stat block at all.
Your Beast of the Sea simply looks like an octopus. All its statistics are in the Beast of the Sea stat block.
yes thanks iw as confused by the " choosing a kind appropriate for that stat block" wording

Thanks! I’ve been getting into it with my sisters bfs campaign again but he’s just starting up a new one in the new year
I will warn you, however, that Blood Elf isn't an official species! That might make your search a little harder.
I just got my ps2 up and running so I’ll be able to get a better idea but can I send a pic of what I’m meaning? It’s more dark elf/elven race
Also do you think I should be putting a trigger warning with this new group? I feel like they’re pretty comfortable with me now but idk I just want to be safe
PlayStation 2? I'm sorry, but I have no idea what that has to do with DnD
My first rp experience was champions of norath
Think that’s how it’s spelled
I chose the guy cause my mom liked the girl lmao
There are some D&D video games, but this server is for the tabletop roleplaying game specifically
I'm very confused, it feels like you're answering questions that no one is asking
Thanks.
Communication about folks' boundaries should honestly be one of the first things that happens prior to play.

Nope!
@vivid raven Oh wait... I just clocked that you took mastery in Automatic Rifles. Don't assume you're ever going to see one.
Lol. Fighters can change their masteries pretty easily anyway. It's not a big deal.
With your highest score being strength, you will find more use in melee weapons and heavy armor
Kinda just picked the stats off the backstory ish
More than fair. Having story inform build is one of the better ways to go, imo.
If you want a ranged character, like guns and bows, you want Dexterity to be your highest score. That's the stat you shoot with.
On another note, I don't see which Fighting Style you took. Make sure to choose one and mark it down.
It works
hey there. im new to DnD but it looks really fun. I have played a few homebrew sessions (like really homebrew more like pen and paper) with a good friend of mine. Can we learn and maybe play on this server ?
Oh right on. Then yeah, that should reflect when you equip some armor on your character.
We don't play on the server, but folks do organize games (read #find-a-game). As for learning, see these links below.

aren't we all
True
That’s oddly specific
Let's also remember the server rules as trolling is not appropriate
Best thing for characters is find something you want to play and make sure it works for your DM's campaign/setting and meshes well with the rest of the party.
The goal is for everyone at the table to have fun
Hi
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
Yes hello, I'm in a dungeon right now, but I can't seem to find any dragons?
Lemme put you on hold there
insert elevator music
Hello! I just checked in with my dungeon specialist. Well, if you’re in a dungeon and haven’t found a dragon, you’re the dragon. Hope that helps!
Hey I need to have a second opinion on something in DMs
Like, direct messages?
Or dungeon mastering
If it’s someone asking for money, or asking for a commission, or asking for anything even remotely suspicious, block and report.
Very common scam here
Offering you free art?
Nuh uh
I gave him $500
All he had to do was give me all his credit card info + pin
And I put it in his account
Okay. From here, lacking the context simply because you're not supplying it, I'll agree this sounds unusual and if you have concerns, stop transactions and seek out Discord Support, not the newcomers channel of the official D&D server.
If you'd like to speak to a moderator here say so in this channel: #moderator-support
THIS WAS ALL SATIRE
Enjoy your day!
Enjoy your next day then. Or else.
If anyone's in a party, I'd love to join. Just tell the dungeon master to dm me.

Hi yall
Helloooo
Welcome newbies !
hi
Hello! how does one get started if they don’t have a DM?!..
What's a dm
Dungeon master
check local libraries or school if your still in it or go look at the https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1241960756858060881 and https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227
probably start at the latter
Omg cool ty!!
Thank youuu
based on that question do you need an more help or just on familier with our abrevations?
*unfamiliar
I am unfamiliar with them I'd not mind if you told me thank youu
ok, what do you know about D&D
ok good first step
ok you should find the basic rules and read them there is a command on here for to send a link to them but i can't find it, but you can check on dnd beyond
Alright thank youu
The Basic Rules are also linked in #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins
I recommend reading through them, especially the first section Playing the Game and the following sections on character creation. Try making a practice character as you go along and feel free to ask questions here along the way!
Thank youu I've finished reading through them
Anybody have any good advice for trying to get into a game as a freshie? I've been looking at listings in #looking-for-players but am too nervous to apply.
What are you nervous about?
Not knowing the rules, meeting other people, messing up and embarrassing yourself, all of the above…
I guess it would have to be an all of the above
Well, you could try looking for games that are more beginner friendly, or try out doing one shots. Overall though, the community is fairly accommodating for new players.
Thanks so much!
Or post it as a Looking for a DM like me back then
looking for a group for one shots or new to the community players. been playing since college in 2006ish and mostly homebrew between friends over the years but the dice are restless and I dont have a current group. Id like a little more laid back if possible just looking to ease in and not step on any toes unless my character really doesnt like an enemy then there may be toe steppage lol
any suggestions for free to join groups that meet mostly on weekends around friday or saturday?
avid fan of crit role up until about the split of the party with ruidus in campaign 3 things kind of went sideways for them at that point
Look at #find-a-game for more info. Also check out local games stores or libraries.
thank you much
The novels
Hey guys, can you please help me?
I have an idea for a D&D character and I’m new
I want to get a character that’s most accurate to a pirate but since I knew, I have no idea how to make a homebrew class
So do you think you can help me figure out which one of the classes are most pirate like?
Swashbuckler rogues are the most obvious choice imo
Swashbuckler as mentioned above is quite piraty, but there are options
What sort of stuff do you want this pirate to do?
Yeah, the actual character mechanics that you want are more important than class flavor.
Like, any character can be a pirate if you pick the right background and then write them that way.
Just like how not all musicians are Bards.
Don’t even need to pick the right background, any background can be a pirate
Well, I imagine this pirate to be some sort guy with just two eye patches because of some tragic backstory and was rescued by pirates, who has no idea what he’s doing and instead of having some cool echolocation thing like daredevil he’s just gonna have a parrot who’s gonna tell him where to go and if I roll bad, I don’t know. I’ll guess I’ll just walk off a cliff.
Wait two eye patches?
Yes
We doing a blind build?
Yes
Well this is gonna be a doozy
That immediately removes every caster from the table, too many spells require sight
I suggest not having "blindness" as an accessory. Outside of using it as a gimmick, rolling to see if you can even walk where you want to is both excessive and detrimental
I don’t particularly recommend having a blind character either
I don’t know when I thought of pirates I thought of that one dude from Lego Ninjago
Blindsight exists in dnd, but that’s usually 10ft
You know that one pirate on the crew two eye patches and just had a parrot tell him where to hit
Are there any particular aspects of being a pirate that appeal to you?
Tremorsense also exists, but none of their sources as permanent.
There are a bunch of drunk wrecks who run around in cool clothing, and fancy hats drink alcohol, straight out the barrel sing songs have have cool guns peg legs, hook hand and just rob people oh and they also got cannons
Basically the entire concept to me when I was five just sounded so cool
And if being a pirate was a professional career five-year-old me would jump at the chance
Honestly it could be any thing from Rogue to Fighter to Barbarian to Monk depending on how you wanted to represent that stuff mechanically
Well that we certainly can work with
There are a lot of things we can do with that vibe
It doesn’t really have to be a blind build I just thought of the idea of my character missing and the parrot going no you’re left the guy misses again and the parrot gets mad and goes. No your other left. would be pretty funny.
Now it just goes down to the playstyle you want
Of each of the classes, I suggest the following subclass/class combos:
- Swashbuckler Rogue
- Storm Herald or Berserker Barbarian
- Battle Master or Champion Fighter
- Drunken Master Monk
(I’d like to throw in swords bard)
Not in the 4 classes, but having fancy sword flourishes sounds fitting in my vision
Wait would the drunken master monk just be rock Lee from Naruto
Yes, except they don’t have to be drunk
Of course, you can certainly have the chug whiskey before every fight
Not super familiar with Naruto but maybe? The 2014 version of the subclass was very much inspired by the Drunken Boxing style of martial arts
Personally, I’m leaning towards swashbuckler Rogue
Yeah that’s the most piratey subclass pretty much
What should his backstory be then?
Whatever you want and your (eventual) DM approves. I suggest whatever you come up with answers 3 key questions:
- Who are you?
- How did you get your powers?
- Why are you risking your life adventuring?
You could even still do the two eye patch thing as flavor instead of mechanics
Who is hosting a campaign
How about this?
Every DM. Look at #find-a-game
My dad was a drunk, never around turns out he was running from a bunch of tax collectors but he died from alcohol poisoning. He dead is officially passed on to me and I picked up his habits and now I am also running trying to pay off the debt while simultaneously is an alcoholic and has a gambling addiction.
Do you think that’s a good backstory
Where’d you learn how to fight?
How about this? I had five other brothers we were all broke food was a privilege so is a free for all if a slice of bread dropped on the ground
And the reason why they have to don’t have to deal with the debt is they all died from tuberculosis
So you picked up learning how to fight and steal on the streets?
Also I would avoid specifics unless you've spoken to your DM about their setting. Try to be general where possible, especially concerning things that have larger implications in world (e.g. naming specific nations, deities, etc). For example it is easier to slot in:
Ragnar was a pirate for 4 years before the sea battle that sunk his crew's ship. Washed ashore, he now seeks revenge on the dread armada that killed his family-at-sea
Than it is to slot in:
Ragnar was a pirate for 4 years, operating in the Alabaster Sea as part of the White Cloud Pirates. His ship was sunk in a naval battle with the Erlorian Empire. Washed ashore...
It was more like we had a gang of Rugrats, who was a functioning unit and protected each other at all caused, but was also simultaneously kill each other
I think this is pretty general just be dumb as hell and I have no idea where I came from. It’s cause I couldn’t afford school.
How is that different from what I said. Being a group of poor outcasts in debt doesn’t make you good at fighting. It can be instincts, learning and survival. That can teach you to be a rogue.
I don’t know
Maybe a former pirate captain
Taught me
Then why “former”
Take your time with it, think of possible backstories, then choose whichever you like
Could’ve been on my dad’s crew and took me in
Yeah that works
Before killed by a tax collectors
OK, appreciate it. You guys helped a lot.
Okay, I know that most of the current conversation on the server is about the current 2025 rules, but is there anyway I can specifically talk about the legacy 2014 rules?
Sorry, I’m new to this server.
i don't see why not. but then i have no power or authority here.
Just specify it’s the 2014 rules you’re talking about, it’s still 5e
Ah okay, I just didn’t know if there was any specific channel for legacy versions.
Thank you very much!
#dnd-elder-editions is for everything before 5e, but the server still talks about 5e in the main channels
in the looking for group stuff, look for play by post or "pbp"
Really cool backstory, man🔥
Hello travellers how are we on this day?
Hi!!!
It’s cold and rainy here in SW Ohio
Same goes in the land of Oz.
I’ve only been playing since June 2 of this year; but I have absolutely jumped right in !!
I love DND
My party just got out of the underground citadel place
What's your campaign about?
hello, i'm new here, found your server from a tag a friend of my brothers was using. how do i go about joining a DnD group? i haven't played in a long time.
Ditto I'm new too, hoping to join a one shot to get a grasp. I have played a few times before but only in small friends groups
how would i expand on a backstory
Im trying to make a "beast tamer", but I'm not sure of what approach to go for one. Like what subclass fits it most.
I would check out the Beastmaster subclass for the Ranger.
Oooo that’s the one I want too!
My DM is toying with the idea of making me part Druid tho
However, you could also probably check out the Circle of the Shepard subclass for Druid.
Alrighty
I would only look at Shepherd druid if you're playing 2014 rules
True.
That's the one subclass 2024 rules really kinda broke
I lowkey forgot about 2024 rules to be honest.
Does the race for a ranger matter?
🤷🏻♀️ IDK
I’m a Halfling
24 rules suck so hard
I honestly like them fine. Just not for Shepherd druid
And for the most part, you can play any race with any class
I mainly play dwarves but dwarves aren't the best for dexterity based classes
No, the race really doesn’t matter at all.
Mainly because of stealth
It really doesn’t matter what race you play to be honest. It doesn’t affect it THAT much. But it’s still something you could be mindful of.
Alrighty
I've actually also got a dwarf ranger now that I think about it
Hi! I am looking to join a group to learn the game. I have done some research and am okay with the basics, but probably need a good bit of guidance. I’d love to join a campaign if anyone is interested.
Check the looking for group channel
Welcome! To use this server to find a group check out #find-a-game for the instructions on how to do so!
Thank you!
I am fairly new interested in one shots as I work shift work

Okay 👍
bard is peak
anyways uhhhhhhhhh you got any character ideas?
we could just go w Solaris and Kasai if u can’t think of any
Probably a sorcerer or paladin
I had a concept for Yuuko with a warlock who’s patron god was the god of their former faith and is now on the run from the church
Woahhh that's really peak
yeahhh
shoot this kinda feels wrong so sorry but uhh dms again ?? sorry i cant keep my mind on things/nf
Guys is there text based dnd, like instead of voice chat?
Yes, those kinds of games would be referred to as "Play-By-Post" (PBP) games. They're rarer than regular games but not unfindable. If a game is PBP it'll usually advertise itself as such
Okay, thank you
ask
No like, I ask but they don't want to play cuz they think its very complex and boring
Ask them to try a one shot, but if they don’t wanna join I don’t think you’re gonna have much luck
Ask them to keep an open mind
Iam having no luck rn, I asked them to try once, but even then, they did not take it seriously
they came to see, but then they just didnt care to listen
You’re not gonna have much luck most likely then
some people just dont want to try it
We can’t force people to try smt they don’t wanna try.
so then ig i don't have an option
Wdym
online dnd exists
i cant play offline
heard of it, never tried
Also, local games stores and libraries
(If you haven’t checked there already)
Do they know anywhere that does?
some of them don't even know there is a game called DnD
I see
alr thanks for helping, lemme see what i can do
when making a character, do you need to know the dm that you are playing with?
Have the same question we both are both starting out and want to play
you dont need to
it may affect your character but making a practice character is smart
In the website does exp leveling or milestone matter
choose milestone for now
does it matter if it is core rules or 2014 core rules?
i suggest using 2024 for now
Not necessarily, but making a character that fits a campaign’s world and works well with other players’ backstories is always nice. Make a practice character now, but I do recommend making a character for a specific campaign unless a character you like fits.
How do we enter a campaign to get more into it and get a better feel of our practice characters
a support character that could be a main character is my favorite kind of character, and when you have a team of that arcitype whist still fitting the setting, it makes for a excellent group of people
i sent you an invite DM actually🙃, but #find-a-game has instructions
#find-a-game should give you all the info you need, but learn the rules first
Ah you’re recruiting?
always
Always?
community server
I see
Hello, I'm new to D&D, where can I find more information/rules about D&D?
Wait I’m in it what am I saying
#learn-to-play should have the info on the rules, specifically the first two chapters of the Free Basic Rules
I see
anyway, back to newcomers
I went back before you
thank you
No problem, if you got any questions feel free to ask
just got the invite sorry when can we expect a starting date of the campaign
Discuss that in DM’s
do this in DMs please
got you
Hey guys, anyone got any good custom character sheet with all the necessary info?
ddb works great for newbies
Hello everyone, I am happy to be here and I am very new to dnd, what would you guys say is the 'roadmap' until I can actually play, what do I need to know how to do. Thank you in advance :)
I’d say how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Oh, and basic table manners
Should I read the books on that or is there a simpler way to learn
There’s the free basic rules ig
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
But it’s still a fair bit of reading
Thank you very much
If you got any questions, feel free to ask us. We’ll answer them (hopefully) as long as it’s dnd related
Is there beginner groups or will they just get mixed in other groups. Idk if that makes sense
There are some beginner groups, but both cases do occur.
Alright alright perfect, is there set times or is it more random?
Depends on the group
Some will do it weekly, fortnitely, monthly or (how I do it) whenever everyone’s free
Hi I'm new to dnd and would like find a party
I recommend checking out #find-a-game
Good morning everyone
Thanks man
Good evening/night to you
Been into DnD since Advanced but haven't actually played more than 1 limited campaign since then
Looking to create a character. What rule set would be the most useful overall to get started?
I recommend 2024
Sounds good. Thank you
I see Core and 2014
Core
You'll find much has changed, but also, much has not
Hey, I am completely new to DnD and am im looking for some experience.

Do u know about classes and all
Yea the basics I guess
Well, I've made 2 characters using Beyond
If you want to get your characters reviewed I suggest posting them here or in #character-discussion , otherwise if you want to jump into using this server to find a group check out #find-a-game for the instructions on how to do so
I'd be happy to post the sheet here but didn't know if that was ok
Hi all, can anyone tell me any solo campaign that i can do?
D&D the tabletop RPG game is a socially collaborative storytelling RPG game - e.g. you play it with other people.
It's not designed as a solo game
But you could try Baldurs Gate 3 as a video game inspired by D&D as a solo game
Yes. One of my favorite games
We even have a channel for discussing it: #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
There are some folks who've created homebrew rules to allow for solo or duet (DM + 1 player) games, but D&D is really built around the idea of 1 DM and 3-6 players.
alr
I am just now getting into dnd and was brought in because of the lore and world building done by Ed greenwood. I know this is not necessarily needed to start playing but out of pure interest I was looking to see if there were any resources (books, online databases, etc.) that the community found particularly comprehensive in terms of detailing the lore of the base game and/or the forgotten realms campaign setting
You'll want to head over to #dnd-lore, but the good news ofc is the Forgotten Realms as a published setting has been around since 1987, and they just recently released some new campaign sourcebooks, so there's lots to sink your teeth into
It sure seems that way, almost to an intimidating extent but as someone who’s never even really been interested in the fantasy genre this feels like I’ve tapped into a whole new world and I’m very excited for that, thanks!
It's a nice place to be, about to explore a whole new world, enjoy
Are there any precautions you suggest I take as a newcomer? The player base from what I’ve seen thus far has seemed very welcoming and encouraging though like any fandom I’ve heard of some stigma as well
Off the top of my head, remember that you're playing as part of a group. Make a character that has a reason to work with everyone else and don't act like you're the main character or betray the group
If you have strong opinions on some things, find players with similar opinions. Unintentional excitement of something you have an opinion on something might be interpreted as "extreme, or radical"
Alright makes sense yeah thank yall. What types of preparations should I make in terms of game knowledge before playing with a group? It doesn’t seem possible to over prepare in these instances though also I don’t wanna learn rules for hours only to figure out that I didn’t have to
It's good to know what your character can do and the basics of combat at minimum, or at least know where you can find that information
You don't have to memorize everything but you should know enough to not stare blankly when told to make an Athletics check with advantage. And which die is which
Good to know thank you, yeah I figure the more I learn the better but at this stage there’s no need for me to try and be impressive as a beginner in terms of my knowledge and character builds.
Yeah don't worry too much about optimization. As long as you aren't actively sabotaging yourself or recklessly multiclassing, it's hard to build a character who doesn't at least function in 5e
I saw that you had she her in your prof and that also reminds me to ask, how inclusive do you feel player bases are in terms of race/sexual orientation/gender. Obviously I know this will vary depending on who I’m around but I also know some fandoms and player bases to simply be more inherently misogynistic or elitist than others.
there's pockets of toxic and pockets of wholesome in any fandom. every table and area are different.
Hello everyone
TIL there's a little dragon emoticon.
Yeah I figured so, I just wanted to watch out because of course it’s not good to generalize any fandom but I didn’t know if there was anything with dnd like there is for tgc communities being unhygienic and that sort of thing
listen to a whole bunch of CritCrab and you'll get the idea of what various negative aspects there are in TTRPGs like D&D.
honestly, i thing the biggest issue is that some people have great difficulty separating their character's emotions and their own emotions.
Certainly can be an issue. But you are not your character, you're just playing them 🙂
This is why the self-insert PC is discouraged.
I think that’s a great thing about dnd and role playing in general, you can be anyone so why would you choose to be something negative
Hey, I'm a relatively new DM/GM hoping to run games and also looking for friends in the space if possible.
Any suggestions where to start and post games would help. 🙂
There are instructions on how to post a game in #find-a-game
you can also look in the looking for dm channel for players and their availability
I need help. I tried creating a character recently but it's so confusing.
using pencil and paper or using the dndbeyond page?
What parts do you need help with?
combination of pencil & paper, roll20, and some other random website. Everyone in the group told me to use different platforms
I'm a lvl 1 half-elf cleric
I have all my abilities figured out
stick with one method. that will really help to cut down on confusion
I just don't understand what weapons I have or features/traits etc.
are you using the physical book or are you using the free rules or something on dndbeyond?

you select your weapons and items and whatnot after you've selected your background, if i remember right.
i found that i absorbed the info much better when i did it on regular pencil and paper, manually, by hand. but thats me. on dndbeyond you're limited to what resources you've purchased.
i sent you links to two youtube videos from JoCat, which are for the 2014 rules. the first one is about clerics, and the second one is about character sheets. while these are for the 2014 rules, much of the generalized info transfer between both versions of 5e.
and JoCat's pretty awesome anyways.
wow. its been a while and i forgot how much superficial cringe and nsfw language was tossed into those crap guide to d&d videos from jocat.
Thank you. I also found a copy of the players handbook and just went through that, reading about clerics and half-elves
This is what I added to my character sheet:
- Charisma increases by 2
-Fey Ancestry, Background (Hermit), leather armor, light crossbow (20 bolts), explorers pack, shield, holy symbol, Domain (light) gain 2 spells (burning hands, faerie fire), bonus cantrip (gain "light"), Warding Flare (equal to wisdom modifier)
Don't forget +1 to any two other ability scores of your choice. Since you're a cleric, one of those should be Wisdom.
these additions are also really easy to forget when you're in combat so it can be helpful to add them all up and just put "+ x to attack rolls" or whatever somewhere on your sheet
Especially if they're an attack roll thing
hey guys i want to start playing d&d but i kinda dont know how to start should i try finding someone online to play with or irl, and what do i need to buy/get?

Well, the Free Basic Rules is online (it’s somewhere in #learn-to-play oh thanks Dyno)
You should learn the rules first, then make a practice character, then go find a game
personally i started with friends irl and just a set of dice- so long as you can find friends willing to make characters and stuff i kicked off with homebrew just to get a feel for the game
it all feels really overvealming do i need to read every thing from the rule set or just teh basics?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
i dont my friends arent into table top
agreed- easy place to start for a player
hmm ye that's a bit more difficult
you could try online tbf

idk what its like online tho so i can't provide much insight
If you got any questions, feel free to ask
should i buy a rule book and dice even if i play online?
Start with the free rules and free online/digital dice rollers for now
Rulebook? Not necessary. Dice are fun, but not required.
If you like the game enough then the Players Handbook is a good investment IMO
But yeah the free rules is all you need to start
im reading thru the rulles this is kinda like fallout
Fallout is an video game RPG so it's not surprising there's similarities...
Fun fact: Fallout 1 was originally going to use rules directly from GURPS (A different ttrpg)
hey everyone! I wanted to ask if someone could help me with stat blocks? I’m trying to write my own one shot, but I’m having a lot of trouble with making/understanding stat blocks on my own.
I can help you understand them, but making them would be a #homebrew thing
I understand! thank you and I would appreciate your help very much!
Since pics aren't allowed here, you can private message me if you want and I can explain the parts of a statblock you don't understand 💪
yeah, I’ll message you! thank you very much!
Banana bread supply drop coming to your location. Thank you for the compliment.
It’s appreciated
is there online groups that play?
ive always wanted to try but have no clue where to start

trying to get something to show up but dont see any post i did make sure embeds are enabled
#find-a-game explains how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game
Also Roll20 and Demiplane have find a game tools
i got it now it was jsut being stupid lol
Does anyone know of anyone online d&d games that are willing to teach new players?
You can look through our Looking For Game channels for a game (see #find-a-game).
But I will say you will improve your chances of finding a game by giving #learn-to-play and the free basic D&D rules a read.
Many folks have limited time to play D&D and a game session can take 2-4 hours. Do they want to spend that time teaching someone all the things because that new person didn't read the game rules? Or do they want to spend that time playing a game and exploring an engaging story together with the group?
Take a look around, just avoid the ones that ask for "experienced players only," Granny.
I appreciate it
Read up on the first couple of chapters of the rules, put a character together for practice, maybe catch a stream or two. Get the basics down, let the DM know you're new to it, and roll some dice.

Hey I’m trying to make a home brew magic item but I don’t want to make it to over powered. How would I keep it powerful enough but not to overpowered as to wear my players would instantly get through the encounters, but not too weak as to wear they won’t ever use it
Make it so that it’s a decent buff to what the players already have, but not so much so that it can trivialise encounters. Aim for quality of life over power.
Ok thanks for the info
An alternative solution is to also make enemies more dangerous to keep up, just not in a way that nullifies the magic item.
I'll also note we do have a #homebrew channel if you wish to dive into homebrew and get feedback on your creations.
This channel is more for new to D&D folks to get help with learning the core game rules and mechanics as they get started.
hello, could someone tell me the name of a creature? I only have an image
i cant send images but if you look up Iarno "Glasstaff" Albrek he has it by his leg
Was just gonna say some kind of imp but I don't know that for a fact.
i dont really know why he has an imp to be honest xD im running icespire peak but taking some stuff from phandelver to combine the stories a bit. its mentionned he has a rat familiar, but nothing about an imp
found it! its a quasit
You beat me by just a second lmao
Quasits are one of the additional familiar types that can be chosen by Pact of the Chain warlocks
they sort of look like bugs they entertain me xD
this might be a silly question but i didnt know where else to ask
do people sometimes do campaigns that allow for ppl to watch? i mean like sit in silently. i struggle to learn without an example or following along /gen
Some campaigns are streamed on twitch so you can see live plays
Hey I'm not that new to dnd I've dm'd a lot but would like to try playing the game for once, I checked /looking-for and I'm guessing there might not be a hub for individual players to post about themselves "looking for group" way? Correct me if I'm wrong pls :>
There are also virtual table tops like AlchemyRPG that have a spectator functionality enabled
There’s “looking for DMs”
Unless that’s not what you mean
would that require a group to be ready or would it be fine to post as an individual?
thank you!! this is actually so helpful lol
Just a player is fine
thanks! the wording confused me :)
Responding to #looking-for-players also works, but i recommend both
There is also some Adventurers League events going on lately like taverncon #1050208806006702081 message
I'm not familiar with the term it scared me, I'll look it up!
Dnd is wizard of the coast’s officially community campaign where people play one shots. The sever has channels dedicated to AL like #adventurers-league if you want to learn more
Guys, I just got the essentials kit
I don’t know what to do,
It’s just a lot of numbers, so confusing
Which part are you confused about in general
Are you at the stage of making a character
Have you read the Basic Rules yet? Which starter kit did you get?
Essential kit
Ah so you’re planning on learning the 2014 ruleset?
Have you read through the mini rule book it came with?
I think so, I assume tho it’s the newer essential kit one tho
No
You need to buy the books to unlock all the content, but the Free Basic Rules are online
i want to play but i have no friends who play dnd
Check out #find-a-game to find an online game
hiiiiii!!
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
hi
Oh thank you but im just sort of looking around right now- I'm new to dnd I suppose I'll start off at #character-discussion
Very well, hope to see ya around!
Ellooo!
want to join a game
Haha I appreciate the offer but Im not too sure where to start
oh ok im also new to dnd we could learn together
Lmao bet
Hiii I could use a little help haha- should I start with making a character first or doing something else?
Read the rules
Then make a character
Sorry got getting back late. The only Essentials Kit is the one for the 2014 version of the rules that runs the Dragons of Icespire Peak adventure. The newer Starter Kit made for the 2024 rules runs the Heroes of the Borderlands adventure. That's not to say you can't port forward the 2014 adventure to 2024 and vice versa, but it is important to know if which version of the 5e ruleset you want to learn.
How did you mess up character creation? Do you have a sheet you could share to have us take a look?
Guys I’m running a yuan ti ranger character in a new campaign any ideas for new characters
What did you like about being a Ranger? What did you not like? What's something you want to do differently with a new character?
Maybe a Druid?
Druids are fun
I think- I’ll take a break- I ran out of character sheets-
And I don’t have a printer at home so-
You could always edit an online PDF or use D&DBeyond’s character creator
I have to bring my school Chromebook to my friends house tomorrow then

@arctic berry the free rules are linked above, read them and ask any questions you have!
It would be nice honestly if I can make like a google slide and make that as a character sheet so everyone can have their own custom one and stay organized
ever heard of dndbeyond?
I don’t think I can access that on my school Chromebook :D (blocked)
then do it at home 😄
I’m doing it at home on my school laptop-
As long as all the necessary information is there the actual format of your character sheet doesn’t have to be the official one
And as long as I’m in my school laptop it’s blocked
-# they can
wait really?
-# it’s happened to me
Yep
dam
Indeed
i had it easy
So you totally could do one on google slides if you wanted to. I’ve seen people use google sheets/excel & docs/word for their characters
I mean yeah I can use sheet but, idk how ;-;
Perfect, I knew someone had to have made a generic sheets/excel version
this one is made for avrae but it works as a normal sheet too
What I was also trying to say is the normal character sheet looks intimidating. And all my friends is new so I wanted to do google slides where it looks more simple-
The required information will still be the same
i mean making it simple will either cut stuff out from the game
I just wanna separate them slide by slide too so just in cause say they have a lot of things at inventory, they have a whole slide to cover
If it helps to make a slides version then feel free, just saying it isn’t necessarily gonna have less info
but its still not really simpler tho
Oh well
Anyways I’ll try making a google slide for those stuff and now the other problem is. I’m very new to dnd how to be a DM :D
It’s a pain learning the modifiers and everything

OKAy I studied some and im tired lmao
Awesome! Any questions?
Can I DM either of you for help
sure
Okiedokie
Definitely!
Me too, if ya need
Hmm honestly atm not rly, I think from what I gathered I'll learn mostly through playing-- tho actually- I do got a question
And we’ve got an answer!
Would ya'll recommend spectating a game to see how others play and get a better grasp on it?
you can, dont need to
Pretty much that.
I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it, but it can certainly help
But at that point, I’d just join a game
how would a non speaking character work
please dont
aw but aphelios 🙁
Sign language, writing or magical speech
If you can go in with the understanding that they’re primarily entertainment instead of a representation of the average table, I think watching D&D liveplays can be helpful
just say they dont talk much
As for spectating someone random’s game, as with Nugget and Alfiz you can but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. You’ll learn better by actually playing and checking the rules when/where you forget.
non speaking characters can be very annoying to play around
it does make things complicated in a party of characters who need to work together
I’ve got a mute character in my campaign, if you got a chill DM and party you’ll be fine. Just try to contribute in social interactions it should be fine.
what if the character themselves doesnt talk, but has someone talking through them (litterally aphelios from league of legends)
or if your dungeon master allows it, he could speak telepathicaly instead of using his mouth
I don’t play league, could you explain?
Something to work with your DM, if it’s purely flavor it’d likely be ok I’d reckon
Aphelios is completely unable to talk, but his sister alune speaks through him as an otherworldly type voice that others can hear
yeah that sounds cool to me, I dont know league of legends at all, but depending on your dungeon master, it can be done for sure
Then sure, that’s pretty much just flavour
As Nugget said try to contribute to the RP via describing your character’s actions/reactions. You can even play on their other features like their facial expressions or body language
hmmm okay! I just don't wanna mess up in my first game lol and then get like pointed and laughed at (I'm mostly joking but overall I'll be fine, also when does character creation start? is it like right before a game begins or do you just make one and have it ready whenever, or just a mix of both cuz I'm kinda getting mixed signals on how the process of starting a DND campaign goes
It’s a mix of both. There’s no single right answer. Some DMs like to make characters in or around a session 0, some like to have prospective players come in with a few set ideas, etc
I find it helpful to make one or more practice characters that you think you’d like to play, then adapt them to the DM’s campaign when the time comes. Worst case scenario you just make a new one with the experience having made one already
oh okay cool!! Thanks for clearing that up for me!
i dont really get the whole skill thing and dices, can someone please explain?
It's late rn tho so I'll focus on making a character tomorrow or maybe before I sleep- thanks for the help! And in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and good night
Sometimes when a player wants to do something that has a chance of failing, they’ll roll a dice to determine the outcome. This is called an ability skill check, and each scenario has its own skill.
A character proficient in a particular skill gets to add an additional modifier on top of the one they get from their stats.
For example, if a character wants to do a backflip, a dungeon master might call for an acrobatics check. This involves a roll (20 sided dice), which has their dexterity ability modifier added on top of it. If the character is proficient, they also add their proficiency modifier.
(btw you explain these things so clearly, thank you
Being very general, skills summarize how good your character is at doing certain things. As Nugget said, doing things with a chance of failure may result in a d20 Test (specifically an Ability Check). Your DM will determine if any of your skills can apply.
They’re not necessarily exhaustive, but the 20ish skills listed cover almost every situation. Want to identify a plant? Nature check. Want to see if someone’s lying? Insight check. Want to shoot hoops? Athletics check
Ty for the compliment
ohh alright, but how do i know if something i did failed?
Your DM will let you know
The DM sets a “DC” (Difficulty Check), a value you must meet or beat to succeed.
You won’t always know the DC before you roll
Also important to note, your roll total must meet or beat, not the roll itself. Let’s say you’re trying to do a DC25 Acrobatics check. As long as the result of the d20 + all relevant modifiers & bonuses total to 25 or higher, you’d pass.
Alright. thank youuu!
Np!
Glad to help
This is also for, generally, "things you actively do, that are not attacking"
the three kinds of D20 Test inclue
A: Attack rolls (trying to hit something with a weapon, or a spell attack like when throwing a fire bolt, or shooting an eldritch blast)
B: Ability Checks (explained recently)
and C: Saving Throws (like when you get hit with a big poison breath, or have to dodge a fireball, or a boulder rolls into you, or something tries to do a fear or charm, possessing you, etc).
Can someone walk me through on making a character?
How much of the rules have you read thus far?
Yeah, it's always easier to explain specifics than it is the entire thing
In essence:
- Pick your species, class, and background & write down any features & equipment you get as a result of that
- Set your stats using one of the 3 official methods (or your DM’s method)
- Derive your HP skills bonuses, save bonuses, etc based on your stats and proficiencies.
- Make a backstory
Yes. The piercing refers to the damage type. Some creatures may be extra vulnerable or resistant to some damage types. For example, an undead skeleton is vulnerable to bludgeoning damage (bashing with blunt weapons like clubs and hammers).
What’s the bonus I put when they’re weak to it?
if a creature is vulnerable to piercing damage, then they'll take double that much damage.
Your DM will let you know when it applies, it's not something you note on your sheet.
But that is very few and far between
theyre gonna DM btw
Ah.
Well, the statblock of a creature will say if they are vulnerable to something, and such.
they are just practicing character creation
I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I’ve purchased XGTe, and I want to let my player use the gloomstalker subclass, is there anyway I can give it to them without them being in a campaign?
Not that I know of, but #ddb-support might know more.
hi, im completely new to dnd and rp in general. well, i had a friend that rped but besides that idk anything
id want to learn how to rp (in general, not especially the rules of dnd , yet having a specific set of gameplay might help)
and how to be a dm also, cuz i actually wanna do some world building and all
No, you’ll need to create a campaign and send your player the invite link. Someone with a Master Tier subscription will need to enable Content Sharing for the campaign as well.

Hi I’m new to dnd
Welcome!
@lyric fjord Hii
This post has some helpful things in it
Hi👋🏽 I’m new to dnd and I’m hoping to join a one shot campaign soon
Hi, also new. And also hope i can find a table to play. Really interested on roleplaying and lore
Can someone tell me how to find/join games on this server?
@rigid glade @midnight cliff
There should be find a game channels somewhere here
Okk..
Well, actually the truth is that I’m not very interested in dnd and fantasy. I mean I don’t wanna be some dwarf wizard thingy, but I couldn’t find any other roleplaying themed discord servers.
D&D is the most popular tabletop RPG system (so I get that), and can certainly deliver when it comes to twisting the rules to fit a certain non-fantasy genre. Though, you’d probably have more fun with a system specifically designed for the genres you prefer. #non-dnd-topics might be a good place to ask about other TTPRG titles(?)
If you don't like fantasy, I would definitely recommend looking at other options
While d&d can be adapted most of the settings are pretty magic coded
Okk
Hey
I’m trying to learn more about how to play the game. I was playing for a little bit last night with a friend that was a DM. I would like to see if anyone will allow me to join with them and play with me for a little bit more so I can learn more stuff about it.
Make a post on #looking-for-dm and respond to #looking-for-players posts. The information HOW TO is in #find-a-game ,
I’ll try to make a post what is sending me to DND discussion I need some help
#find-a-game has all the instructions. you can type the command in any channel you can type in (like this one) and the bot will post it to the correct channel.
hey guys ! im new to dnd and would like to play a game, ive looked through the lookin for players posts and it all seems very advanced, what should i prepare in order to join a game ? feel free to dm me to play , im open to learning all i can about this game
Most groups will be accepting of newcomers as long as you carefully read the adverts, have a basic grasp of the rules (ability and attack rolls, your character's own features) and express enthusiasm and excitement for the game on offer.
Remember, DMs want folk who are most interested in their game!
In terms of specific prep, I'd say read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology and try putting a character together for practice.
okei thank u , ill work on doing a character and trying to understand all the rules
If you’ve get a question feel free to ask!
The whole thing can seem like a lot, but at the table you'll only need what's relevant to your character.
it's a pretty open-ended system with lots of room for interpretation, there's a lot of different styles and stuff u can dive into
how do i know if i made my character right
You can share it and people can help or you can ask your DM.
Send the character link to #character-discussion and we’ll assess it. Or, talk to your DM.
So basically what TheMadTitan said
Can i just get the link from the google search bar or is there another way to do it?
You can
I'm trying to find out how to get into DND. Are there resources for finding people in my area? The gaming stores near me are almost solely focused on MTG
I assume dnd5e wiki has everything I need to know to start dnd
Dose it have the essential kit and starter kit stuff in it too?
You're probably better off reading the free basic rules
Wdym
I mean, the wiki has information but in my experience, it's terrible about differentiating between official mechanics and homebrew. I also don't think it goes into specific details on everything, since that would be, you know, piracy
I have the essentials kit
But I feel like I can expand more, that’s why
So theoretically
If I know the basic rules of the game
I can play the game
Absolutely
You really only need to know how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Like 100% of the game, and I assume the purchase able once are advanced classes ect
Wdym 100% of the game?
To play a fully functional game-
But yes, the new books do add additional subclasses
Then yes
And the purchase once are just extra to make it more fun for the advanced players
You could see it that way
Oke then based off the basic rules and dnd beyond basic rules
I’ll create a document that I can understand
Cuz I’m a very very new dm heheh-
Run the command for creating a new sorcerer pls
?tag new sorcerer
Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment

I've made my character! (rlly I just put everything I had written down into DND Beyond lol)
I have more of a question about the bot commands and not exactly about D&d
1# Do I type /looking for DM command in find-a-game?
2# What actually happens after I click enter?
3# How do I format it correctly?
4 What are the things that a DM may want to know about me?
1# You do it in any channel
2# you’ll be given a form to fill out
3# the form should show you
4# same as 3
Thank you
Yes
i found out how to create encounters but i dont really know how they work
I'm new to d&d is a drow character beginner friendly
species don't matter all that much in terms of play experience, it's moreso what the classes offer
you just get some flavour from whatever species you choose with a few mechanical benefits
?
Thanks guys I'm still trying to read the rules
Ya new to DnD? Starting out as a DM? Bold
yep right into the deep end
Hope you don’t drown, gunna need a high wisdom stat to resist the insanity
so do you know how to make a campaign in dnd beyond
might have luck asking in #ddb-support too, i don't know ddb personally
@sonic cloak I can offer a few things over DMs that could help
sure
In the main menu, click Collections > My Campaigns.
Then Create A Campaign, in the top right corner.
ive done all that
and ive got a name concept and description but i neeed to know how to acually create the events
I wanna play dnd for the first time I have my character now what ?
If you'd like to get your character reviewed feel free to post them here or in #character-discussion ! Otherwise if you want to jump straight into using this server to find a group check out the instructions in #find-a-game
When casting chromatic orb, if I have arcane focus, do I still need the gem?
That's pretty much it. You can add information for yourself or the players in the fields provided, you can add players who are taking part in it.
Yes because the diamond has an explicit gold cost
The main purpose here is just to group everyone’s character sheets together.
What’s the most common rules. Like if I make a new character what rulebook should I use
the basic rules or the player's handbook should have all you need
5e is the most common and most recent edition. If you're asking about which 5e ruleset (2014 vs. 2024) it's a bit harder of a question. 2014 has been around longer but 2024 is more recent and all future content will be made for 2024
I think I just use 2024 since I’m new
Hello guys, does anyone have a campaign thats open to new players?
Check the postings in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
See #find-a-game to learn more about how to use our Looking For Game channels
Hey guys, I'm new to DnD and I wanna experience and observe a game, anyone free and willing to take me under the wing? Thanks in advance
For observing games, there are plenty of live plays on Youtube and Twitch.
Definetely check out the Join the Party Podcast recording of their first session. It is an edited recording designed to teach newcomers the basics of dnd: https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
As a dm (I’m new) is it important I have like another sheet where I know how much the players can deal and also track their XP and death saves
idk about important, but very useful
No, not really. I’ve never done smt like that, maybe just to keep track of their HP, AC and name/stuff I should know about them
It does help though, but not necessarily important
I’m trying to create a binder for a campaign I’m about to make
So that when it’s play time, everything is smooth
Good to be organised
I’m trying to make one- not join one-
Glad to see you’re invested
I’m trying to join a game
Right now I’m looking trough basically the book rule book from 2014 and just putting some info in a document, once’s I really need like how to make characters, all items, and combat stuff
Organized in a way I understand
Ah you’re playing the 2014 rules?
Gotta start with a simpler one
2024 rules and words look somewhat overwhelming
I wouldn’t call 2024 any more confusing than 2014 except maybe weapon masteries, but 2014 is a perfectly valid choice
But yeah I’m also wanting to put a small amount of custom rules
Home brew I think it’s called?
how do i do a campaign or do i need more ppl to do it
You need some people to do it, usually 5 but can be more or less
will anyone help me please
Best I can recommend you do is make #looking-for-dm posts and respond to #looking-for-players posts
Like say, weapon materials,
Wooden sword: basic, dose 1d8
Stone sword: same: dose 1d8 BUT: has bonus damage as a blunt type weapon
Steel sword: basic, also dose 1d8 but +1 bonus on strength save throw (greater parry power)
Somthing like that is what I’m thinking
That’s…unique
ive done that in a few servers and i got nothing
I’m a person who dreams to be a game developer so :D
Then you just gotta wait more then
oh
Seams fair tho I think? What u think Nugget
Weapon materials usually aren’t a thing that’s addressed in dnd
That’s the homebrew/house rule I’m thinking of applying :D
It’s interesting for sure, idk how it would translate into actual gameplay
Thinking of like also unique type of conditions
I dunno if I’d recommend tweaking the game too much as a first time DM
Hmm,
My goal is to have a unique experience and have fun so-
But I think that’s all true- learning basics is pretty important
I recommend you understand the basics of the game thoroughly before homebrewing it
After all, Adamantine as a material just = "I do bigger damage to objects", and Silver weapons are "I do slightly more crit damage to shapechangers"
Okiedokie! I’ll make a campaign with the basic rules only first then
yeah, like playing minecraft vanilla before adding any mods like new materials or enemies or progression systems
Figure out what the base game is, and what it feels like, before beginning to uproot or build on top of it
True! Can my world be like custom tho? Like not from the pre built worlds? From the essential kit for example
Custom worlds are a lot easier and totally possible
Many official D&D settings started out as someone’s homebrew world
oh absolutely, your own setting is entirely valid. It's just recommended to try staying within the bounds of the mechanical rules.
You can just say certain monsters don't exist, or change up the names of some of them, but having mechanical consistency will help you figure things out
Okay!
I remember my first play, it was also homebrew, it was a cool experience being a ranger, with a Druid
For example, if your setting has... a lot of differing rules around spirits and so on, or differing rules for undead, or just zombies/ghouls, try to not stir how those things work, or at least keep the mechanical changes to a minimum. You could even postpone mechanically interacting with them until you begin to feel things out better.
It was just a duo, but that friend of mine. Left me because of disagreement, and years after I found an essential kit on my friends house and borrowed it and sparked interest. Now I’m here
They are in this sever but I bet they’ve forgotten me already
Anyways! That’s pretty much it for now thank you
hi, i've never played dnd before, how should i start? i don't have many other friends interested to like set up a game

hi me and my friends want to play dnd but have no dm what to do D:
Read #learn-to-play so you have a decent idea of how the game works and then look for a game.
We have our looking for game channels here - read #find-a-game to learn how to use them.
Paid DMs fit the need perfectly for this, or someone steps up and becomes a dm lmao
thank you
thank you as well
Completely new to DnD (only played RPG game-books) and the banner role choice made me interested in the lore already! Harpers definitely sound like the way to go for me (without knowing absolutely nothing about them apart from the role description) 😅
I'm not 100% sure what the harpsters are part of but I think it's an event thing
If u want a list of the actual types of characters u can play u can find it on dnd beyond
Absolutely! I am somewhat familiar with the character types from BG3 and Pillars of Eternity but no idea about the Forgotten Realms lore! Have to read up on that it seems hah
Welcome! I’d definitely check out the free Basic Rules linked in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play . Try making a practice character as you read along and feel free to ask any questions here :)
As for the Harpers bit, being part of or joining that organization is definitely something to work out with your DM (or eventual DM).
Thank you!
dnd
Dnd indeed
sometimes we eat dice
Harpers are one of the five major factions of the sword coast in dnd, a region in West Faerun (which is a continent in the world of dnd)
only sometimes?
They're kind of like an autonomous group that fight evil basically, but since their group motto is being free they basically butt into random affairs at their worst with their ideals
But at their best they are protecting the peace
If you watch D&D: Honor Among Thieves, Chris Pine’s character works for the Harpers.
Hi guys. I’m new and I would like to know some good tips to being a DM
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

That's maybe a little bit different than what I thought haha but they can still considered chaotic neutral I think! I thought they are a group of bad people that do good things hah, kind of like oath of vengeance paladins 😅
They're more chaotic good
The closest to chaotic neutral is the Emerald Enclave which is basically like a reflavored group of vegans in a good way for the most part
Heya, just thought I'd introduce myself to the community as I'm new here (and a newbie to DnD).
My friends play DnD and I use dice in a lot of role-playing games, so just thought it'd be really cool to get into it. I can't wait to meet you all! 🫶🏾🫶🏾
Welcome!
Aw, tysm. That's so kind of you! 💙
hey me and my friends are wanting to start playing dnd and wanted to know how to start? should we make a dnd character off the offical DND website or what

Hi. I’m also planning on making group to play with but I suggest you make a character on the website
Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful information that can get you started. If the website you are referring to is D&D Beyond, that can be a good place to start. That's where most of these links go. Just keep in mind, you'll only have access to content and features on that site that are free, or that you've specifically purchased through that site. If you have rulebooks IRL, then you won't be able to use that content automatically on D&D Beyond. Though you can use their homebrew tools to get around this, but its a bit complicated
okay thanks guys ^_^
