Yeah, when starting out it's best that you use what already came before .
No sense in re-inventing the wheel if you don't have to.
plus with each module you can build your frame of reference.
What you can do right now while you search for a group is learning the basic rules and mechanics of dnd.
Such as learning what an attack roll is. Or learning what classes are available in D&D.
is it harder to find a party/campaign online?
it depends on were you look.
Noted.
I recommend starting small.
I have roleplay, and writing experience already just not in the dnd genre
Instead of trying to join a full campaign, just join a one shot.
It's easier to set time aside to play one self contained 2-4 hour adventure than locking into a full campaign.
Roleplay and writing is can help.
It's why you'll often find people with a theater background in this community.
But it's also important to note the game aspect.
yep
How long do normal campaign sessions last?
A few hours
I see..
I think those are all the questions i have for now but i will definetly ask more questions in the future! thank you to everybody who's taken the time to assist me!
A good starting campaign can be comprised of 6 to 12 sessions. With each session being about 2-4 hours.
Though this can be shortened or increased.
Generally an important thing to communicate with a potential group is figuring how much time everyone wants to commit to.
yeah one of those points that need to be communicated
A common pitfall new groups fall into everyone having different expectations on on key things like campaign length and commitment.
I'm looking at this channel labeled as "Looking-for-community" can you elaborate on what it offers?
Specificity is important.
For some a long campaign can be something that spans a 2 months, while for others it means it running it for a year at minimum.
Those will be for Community games, such as "Westmarch" servers. They're often formatted like having a quest board, certain characters sign up for it, and that's the party for that quest.
Another form of communty games are D&D's official community campaign called Adventurers League.
Which has it's avenue for finding games like https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081
Can someone explain what the difference between background feature and background characteristics is on the dndbeyond website please
Background feature is a character ability, background characteristics describe your character
let me know if you want an example
I would actually like an example if it’s not too much work
Sure.
For this example, let's take a look at the Criminal background.https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Criminal
The Criminal's background feat is the Alert Feat: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Criminal
Which adds a bonus to your initiative rolls and allows you to swap initiative with a willing ally.
While the Criminial's background characterics cover the character's personality, ideal, bond, and flaws.
Like so:
Personality: I am always calm, no matter what the situation. I never raise my voice or let my emotions control me.
Ideal: Freedom. Chains are meant to be broken, as are those who would forge them.
Bond: My ill-gotten gains go to support my family.
Flaw: If there’s a plan, I’ll forget it. If I don’t forget it, I’ll ignore it.
Emphasis on WILLING ally
@inner geyser does that explanation clear it up for you?
I can read.
I was thinking if i were to roll high for instance i could swap with the tank or healer
vice versa.
shuts up tho
Wait this is actually perfect thank you thank you !!
Happy to help
You probably want to swap with the wizard so they can fireball first without having to worry about friendly fire, or to do crowd control
yeah maybe
i just think it's a neat little ability.
but yeah i have to admit idk the 2024 stuff.
There is some pretty neat things in the 2024 edition.
I second this
and like any editions there will always be some good and bad aspects to it.
yeah i know
K so I'm making a high elf Paladin I forget the stat buffs LOL like what number for the buffs
+2 +1, or +1 +1 +1, the specific stats being dependent on the background
Unless you mean standard array
Wait 2014 or 2024
When you say "for the buffs", what specifically do you mean? Because the only one that comes to mind was Background, so whatever the background says.
Which background?
2024
Oh modifier
yeah so background
wait, what? Now I'm confused
What's the best background for paladin?
ah.
Right, we just need to know the scores
From the 4 in the Basic Rules, Acolyte or Soldier seems to work well. I recommend Soldier.
i like soldier
So, Echo, you understand the ability score improvement granted by background?
Not fully
I have a question for any DM. Have you guys heard of Obojima: Tales of tall grass, and if so, how did y'all run the campaign
I have shitty memory so I'm trying to rememeber
No
So, you've used Standard Array to arrange your ability scores.
Then, Background gives you a small bonus. Either +1 to three different scores, or +2 to one score and +1 to another.
For a moment at least, let's imagine you pick Soldier as the background. Soldier's associated Ability Scores are Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution.
So you can either get +1 to all 3 of those scores, or +2 to one of them of your choice, and +1 to a different one of those of your choice.
I've heard of it, someone in our dnd group ran it as a replacement session because the original DM couldn't make it. I was a player in it tho and don't really remember too much
Okay
Basically:
you get your stats from standard array, point buy or rolled stats
Then
You get extra stats from your background
Oh ok, it's fine
Okay
What's stat modifier again....🤣
So, as an example, let's imagine a hypothetical character from scratch to explain that
Soldier fighter man uses standard array, takes 15str, 14con, 13dex, and we currently don't care for the other 3 stats.
They can
A: get +1 to all 3 of those with Soldier background, becoming 16str, 15con, 14dex, or
B: they can do +2/+1 with Soldier background, such as +2 con and +1 str, leading them to 16str, 16con, 13dex.
Then we derive modifiers. If they went with option B, they'd have a +3 Strength modifier, +3 Constitution modifier, and +1 Dexterity modifier.
The number you add to the total when making a D20 Test using that ability.
For example, a Strength check to kick a door down, an attack roll with a Melee weapon (like swinging a warhammer), or a Strength saving throw (such as against the Entangle spell wrapping you up with vines, representing you powering through and not getting tied up by them)
Higher Score = Higher Modifier = Better chances whenever doing things based on that ability.
Determining Ability Scores
I think Standard Array is the simplest to use ("Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.")
My stats are 14 str 13 dex 15 con 12 int and 10 wiz 8 cha
So
I recommend using standard array in this practice to figure out the rules
Assign those numbers to your ability scores, in whichever order you want (although you can look at this recommended table to get help, such as the Paladin row saying 15 10 13 8 12 14)
Alright, so, that post-standard-array
Now you add your ability score improvement from your Background.
So, which background have you chosen? (Backgrounds btw)
Solder
alright, if you're picking Soldier, +2 con and +1 str... You'd have 15 str and 17 con.
That'd leave you with modifiers of +2 strength and +3 con.
You could get it slightly better if you switched those bonuses;
to +2 str and +1 con, for a score of 16 in both, giving you a modifier of +3 in both.
And that's initial ability scores and background done! Of course, make sure to add the other things, like noting down you have the Savage Attacker Origin feat, because you have the Soldier background.
Kk
Features and traits?
Ik you put plus's under the numbers but what amount?
You'll have a better chance asking that in #dm-discussion as this channel focuses on on teaching new players the basics of D&D. The #third-party channel will also be a good place to ask.
For every 2 above 10, your modifier goes up by 1
There’s a table for it somewhere
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
“Ability Scores and Modfiers table”
Hi! I'm new to dnd, and took my best shot at making a character sheet using DND beyond. Would anyone be able to look it over/make sure I did it right?
i have my first oneshot coming up, and dont want to make a fool of myself 😅
Feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion and we can take a look at it
thanks!!
I spent my first session Watching 2 other people argue about who is going to pay for lunch in the tavern
That's unfortunate, the DM should have stepped in to speed things along
Hey-OOO, all!😁
I'm just useing beyond
hullo
im thinking of starting dnd and I have like 2 friends on board. (hah, funny. They are on board and its a board game 🤣 )
We are all clueless and js wanna have a good time.
Since christmas is coming up, I figured i could get anything needed as a gift so I dont have to spend erroneous amounts of money on stuff.
Do you guys have anything you could recommended for me, a newbie, to ask for as stuff a newcomer would need?
And if you have any tips id appreciate it too. Thanks
looking to be a DM, btw.

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Proud of ya
that sounds amazing!
Ikr she's gonna divine smite and rat 🙂
Are you playing in person or online?
in person
Could you dm me rq
For in person.
Personally I would say getting a DM screen and the old essentials kit from Dragon of Icespire peak.
The DM screen so that way you can have your personalized cheatsheets for quick reference for DMing.
The essential kit because the adventure book has a beginner friendly campaign book and it comes with cards that can be quite useful for new DMs.
On that note, the Sidekicks the Essentials Kit/DoIP gives you are great for lending extra support to small parties.
Unfortunately, I have don't open DM messages with people I don't know.
tysm
tysm too
Then I would recommend using some looking for DM/group resources.
As soliciting for DM messages that with people you haven't interacted with before can give the wrong impression.
Plus the server has rules about asking people for games outside of the looking for games channels.
Kk I have to wait till like November 22 idk whh
that seems like a 7 day cooldown
The two most recent posts #1050208806006702081 message lists Adventures League D&D sessions.
Kk
What's the best race for wizards
Whatever is the coolest to you
typically any species that doesn't have features that only really come into use when doing stuff like melee fighting.
Elf is pretty good, high elf gets a free cantrip
With the most recent version of D&D (2024 rules) a race/species can go with any class without issue because it no longer determines what ability score bonuses you get. With that now falling to a character's background.
Okay thanks king
I would recommend looking at the species list and seeing the ones who's abilities match a playstyle you want to have.
I picked elf cuz it's peak and kinda my style
And paladin I like swords and mf spells
Real
I love spells that help swords to
For a uniqueness for new players I would say go with a Goliath for a wizard. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#GoliathTraits
W
simply because Cloud’s Jaunt gives you the ability to teleport for up to 30 feet as a bonus action.
For new players, having an ability that uses a bonus action early on can help teach the difference between an action and bonus action.
W
I could recommend the Eldritch Knight subclass
When do I get to pick that LOL
Does anyone have a campaign i could join or a game they just started
Fighter Level 3
Kk
Check out #find-a-game
Thanks
-# dm
Everyone is looking for a dm
A lot of people are yes
It seems like it never ends
Then don’t yeah
in the 2024 rules (which is what you've been using, that version), every class gets their subclass choice at level 3 in that class.
Kk
It's level 3 for fighter either way, lol
Why is it so hard just to find a game
Cuz the concentration of DM’s to players is skewed, plus time zones, preferences and schedules
I mean I'm the DM of my group and sometimes I can't find me
LOL
Dm me rq
When people said lose yourself in the game this is NOT what they meant
Hahaha
Run a module
Yeah, I've been DMing for something like 5+ years at this point and I still only run modules
I have zero desire to make up my own adventures and it's completely not required
I’ve been DM’ing for 1.5-2, and I haven’t done a single module
See, both options work
I like gutting content from modules and connecting them in ways they wouldn't normally.
Like, seeing a plot point and going "oh you know what, this section of this module would make sense here"
First session done : )
Another decent option if you want to do a bit of both 😁
hey all, sorry for the sudden intrusion i just found this server, is this the best place to send introductions?
Introductions aren't really necessary, but it's a fine place to say hi
Just make sure you don't share any personal info that's against server rules
Yeah it's my sweet spot. I like being creative, but I also don't like doing all of the heavy lifting
That slays dragons 💀
Guys help my friend told me to roll 4d6 and take away the lowest stat
Lysander the Wizard
My stats
STR - 13
DEX - 15
CON - 16
INT - 18
WIS - 14
CHA -13
He’s a bit broken and I’m brand new
That's on the higher side but it's not totally broken
If your friend is the DM than you already have permission. If they aren't and you don't have a DM yet, they're unlikely to let you use those rolls anyway
That’s my base stats I’ve just started making the character
My friend said it was fine
Then be happy you have good stats I guess
Last time I rolled for stats, I was in the low 60s
Last time I did it none of my stats were over 12
I did the 6d20 version once just for funsies, and got 27....
There's a reason I generally stick with point buy.
Bro just told me he just wanted me to make a random character I was happy I got good stats ima hurt him
I don’t even get to use himmmmm T-T
Hi guys is anyone online
There are many people online. What's your question?
I want to create a character and play a game
Please refer to the player's handbook on creating a character.
DnD character creation guide
The Free Basic Rules linked in #learn-to-play also help
?
Echo you should know btw that asking to DM random people is a fairly common scam on this server
?
Sup vaporous creeper
I can't till like November 22
Even then no one got back to me or my friends that made one
People won’t know that straight away
You can DM them a message anywho, or preface it instead of just going “DM”
Fair fair
They sent you to #find-a-game so I assume not
Gather the people you’re interested to play with in another server and go from there
Already have
It's not going to happen. Currently making my own Campaign for my group. Please find someone else
Great
We just need a dm
Have fun doing that!
And idfk how to dm myself
Look at #looking-for-players and make a post on #looking-for-dm
Kk
You can also look at https://startplaying.games/search?group=PLAY_TODAY though keep in mind that’s for paid dnd games
I ain't got money
Learn
Honestly just make a map a story and possible outcomes that’s what they told me
No but like rolls and what to tell em to do what rolls and sturf
That just requires knowing how modifiers and skills work
Dam
Plus there are dozens upon dozens of legally free modules available from DMs guild I posted earlier today #dnd-newcomers message
Anyone wanna be a dm for a dnd match?
And look at #find-a-game for info on how to make a post.
Hi
Hallo! Did you need help with anything, or did you just pop in to say hi?
And welcome to the server!
Hey!
I'm new to DND,so i have zero knowledge about it
I actually got introduced to it when a client told me his oc was for a DND game and just gave me a rough idea and i thought it sounded fun.
Hopefully i fo get to meet other newbies like myself or get into a game when I'm knowledgeable enough
I recommend reading #learn-to-play , specifically the first two chapters of the free basic rules, and asking any questions you might have here. We’ll answer them (hopefully).
I will
Tysm ^^
Hi
can anyone explain what "spell attack bonus" and "spell save" is? and how does one calculate it?
Your spell attack bonus is the attack bonus used when you cast a spell that involves an attack roll, such as Firebolt
Your spell save DC is the number creatures have to meet or beat on their saving throw when you cast a spell that requires one, such as Hypnotic Pattern
Both are calculated depending on the class and/or feature that’s giving you spellcasting. The general formulas are:
- Spell Attack Bonus. = Proficiency Bonus + your Spellcasting Ability Modifier
- Spell Save DC. = 8 + Proficiency Bonus + your Spellcasting Ability Modifier
Could you remind me as to what DC stands for please
Difficulty class/check
Danke
👋🏻 I am new to dnd too and trying to find a session to join too! check these channels if you are trying to find a dnd party to join look in the looking for players channel
Hey I m a new Level 20 Player and I want to Play the Dragon slayer Event anyone want to join?
dont advertise here, do it in the designated channels
Can you tell me which Channel please
Thx
Is starting d&d with baldurs gate 1 enhanced edition as a knowing nothing of the genre at all, a good choice, coz that and baldurs gate 2 enhanced are the only 2 d&d related games and I have and really want to get into it
its the opposite
baldurs gate 1 and 2 are not the new dnd edition nor are they actually the rules of their editions
starting with dnd is the best
How do I do that, also I don't have money to buy a game as of the moment and no friends irl who can play with me

its not a video game btw
Yeah ik but I read on reddit I think it's best to get in with BG3 if u have no one to play with
not true
Hmm I c
can you play D&D Solo against AI?
Moreover, none of the Baldur's Gate games perfectly match the rules of their edition.
well i cant devote the time to playing with others so that is why i am asking
ever heard of pbp?
pbp?
so its at your own lesiure? how would that work if someone did not play for like 5 days?
ahh..that sounds cool...any discords that has a bunch of them going on? that i could check out
#find-a-game just make an lfdm post specifying pbp
There are plenty of free rules in dnd beyond wich could keep u going for a while
The main limit is the lack of subclasses and spells but there are ways for ppl to share rulebooks
Also u can find a game online or in there might be ones going on in a game shop near you
I see
There are certainly worse introductions, but BG1 is from 1998, and is based on 2nd Edition AD&D (2e), many of the core concepts are the same, but much has changed since 1989, when 2e came out. Baldur's Gate 3 is based on the current version of D&D released in 2014 and I'd say its a fine introduction to the game.
But at the risk of pointing out the obvious, it's the difference between playing Microsoft Flight Simulator and actually flying a plane. The best introduction is to find a table that is willing to accept new players.
Should I read all guied and start playing with random guys or should I just buy baldurs gate3 and learn while playing it
read
Ok I am reading right now
Really sorry to ask this again.
I have 2024 DM and Players.
A player wants to try Tabaxi.
I was looking at getting the Mordenkainen book but a slight overkill purchase just for base Tabaxi Details
Someone has offered me Xanathars guide to everything book.
Is that obsolete now or will it give me enough?
Last question. The 2014 monsters Manual, again is that out of date now and need the 2024 to work with my rule books
The Monster Manual is out of date if you're otherwise playing with 2024 rules.
you dont technically NEED it, but it sure is handy
A solid start is reading the first two chapters of the free basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
To compliment that reading, recommend trying other things to see what works for you.
Whether that's playing BG3 but remembering that it's not one to one.
Or even listening to a pod cast like this to listen to how a session of play can be.
https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
Xanathar's Guide doesn't have the tabaxi info, though.
yeah that's in monsters of the multiverse I think
AH YES @harsh fjord @gentle quail you are quiet right it's Multiverse and Vollos guide not Xanathars
Would Xanathars still be handy or again not with the 2024 rules?
There's some very good stuff in Xanathar's that wasn't reprinted in 2024.
oh yeah it's definetly still handy
Looks like I need.
2024 Monsters
Multiverse (just for Tabaxi)
Then decide if a free Xanathars helps
I'm pretty sure xanathar's, MOTM, and tasha's are compatable with the 2024 sourcebooks
I love all the personal character options like names and motivations and whatnot, it really helps
Ok ace thank you. I'll get it then.
But buy 24 MM
there is actually a bundle I found on amazon that I'm eyeing, it's a bundle of all three of the source books, not sure if it's exclusive to where I live though or somethng like that
Ah ok!
Does anyone have experience of the Laureate books on Amazon? Looks like they pull rule subsets into books?
I.e. this says it's purely Tabaxi Rogue stuff Tabaxi Rogue: Dungeon Diary https://amzn.eu/d/f11t4o6
Hi all, is there a place to play mock games? Like if I want to practice without the pressure of human gameplay. 🤣
Nope, we don't play on the server.
yuppers
Not necessarily here on discord...Just in general.
ever heard of roll dice
Playing D&D does entail humans, unless you're playing a video game like Baldur's Gate III.
which is not dnd btw
Why is it not dnd
It's an approximation.
There is an interactive adventure in #learn-to-play , but idk if it’s what you’re looking for
I'm brand new, just wanting to practice a bit
It might be a bit meta, but the DM’s Guide includes some adventure outlines that you could practice running both as a DM and player. No pressure to get into roleplaying, and you can really practice combat with playing both the monsters and character(s).
Or just take any pre-written module and play both the DM's side and the players'.
I say that just because the DMG isn't cheap, whereas free modules are plentiful!
^ I agree. Though, the DM’s Guide, and even Adventures in Faerûn have some simple outlines that don’t take much reading to run.
An alternative is the beginner’s adventure Peril in Pinebrook. It’s a free PDF one-shot.
Great choice.
Any other early adventures for young kids to help get in (following the DnD Begins boardgame)
The new starter set, Heroes of the Borderlands, is supposed to be good for newbies. The aforementioned Peril in Pinebrook. And a slew of 2014 adventures that would still work with the 2024 rules.
It's set in the DND universe, and while it does use a lot of the rules from it, they're adapted to fit a more "video game-y" style for players that may not have played the real thing.
Hi, I'm completely new to D&D. All I have seen is some of Critical Role's campaigns. However, I've been wanting to play for a while now. I think I would love it, I'm super into storytelling and character creating, but I'm just not sure where to start. I asked someone at the Ren Faire in my town recently, and they said to come here. Any advice on where to find game and how/what I should play would be very appreciated.

Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Reading the Player's Handbook (PHB) is always a good place to start, beyond that it's just a matter of finding a good table, which is perhaps easier said than done. Ideally you're finding a table meant for new players, where your fellow players are also new as well, run by an experienced and patient DM. For IRL tables you might try your local Adventurer's Guild (if available), for online play Virtual Table Tops (VTTs) like Roll20 or Foundry, and ofc various LFG forums as noted above
Ok, I will try to do this, also new to Discord if I’m being honest, so going to figure this out. Thank you for the help and advice! @wild onyx And @unreal token
For what to play, I recommend starting with a one-shot.
This is a self-contained adventure that can be completed within a single 2-4 hour session.
This has a lower barrier for entry, is a small commitment, and a great opportunity to learn.
So stranger things and baldurs gate 3 has peaked my interest in dnd. How do I go about learning to play? I was thinking it could be something me and my brother can play.
You can start with the free basic rules. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Thank you! I know this has been a pretty popular game for years.
You can also listen to the first episode of this dnd podcast:
https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
It was edited to include bits for new players to learn how to play.
So 2 players can't play? I only know me and my brother wants to play I know Noone else who would
While rare. It is possible.
Generally the way D&D works is that you have the Players and the Dungeon Master.
The player control a single character as they go through an adventure.
The Dungeon Master is the one who controls the environment and the npcs, acting as mediator between the players and the game system.
So you have a couple of options.
Okay are there any digital games that can be played online?
First option is that one of you becomes the DM, while the other becomes the player.
Second option is that you both join a game with someone else who has taken the role of the DM.
Third option is that you can both play a DMless module.
While D&D is a table top game, that was original played via pencil and paper, nowadays there are several ways to play it online.
Nice!
One approach is just via a group call and play theater of the mind. This is just pure voice narration.
The second approach is by playing on a virtual table top.
There are serveral VTTS out there.
You have roll20, AlchemyRPG, FoundryVTT, and even DND beyond has it's own VTT.
i've seen vids of ttrpg's where they don't even play with maps or grids but just say what they do and remember stuff
aka Theatre of the Mind
yep
i just wanted to hammer home you could do it all over voice basically. took me forever to figure that out years ago
hearing it broken down and seeing examples helped me realize i was wrong about my preconceptions. So maybe i just stated the obvious but you never know.
what were your preconceptions?
I've been playing TTRPGS for 5 years now, so it could be helpful to hear what newcomers today expect when they first join the hobby.
that you had to do combat on a grid with some kind of token for everything
how else would you measure exact distances?
but yeah that's just one way to play. not the only way.
My area here in central NV is devoid of all "nerdy" social settings so to scratch my itch I use startplaying.games for one shots and I've found a good weekly campaign
@fervent knot
noice
startplaying.games is a resource I've heard good things about.
It can be great solution for groups that to together as players.
I see. Thanks for the tip tho
Hi iam new, i have played dnd for a while now and i have made stuff to share with the comunity. would anybody like to chat and learn more about me or what i'd like to show?
Depends, what sorta stuff?
Welcome.
#dnd-discussion would be good place to share that info depending on the subject matter. This channels is more focus on teaching newcomers the basics of dnd
For dnd adventurers league will they provide the books if I use DND beyond
No. AL doesn't provide the books for you
However, you can build AL legal characters with the free basic rules for 2024, which are available on D&D Beyond
Hey a bit new! Haven’t played before and wanted to hopefully someone who could show me the ropes/ a group that plays frequently!
read #learn-to-play specifically the first two chapters of the free rules and we’ll answer any questions you have

To supplement reading the free basic rules. You can listen to the first episode of this dnd podcast campaign.
https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
It was edited to include bits for new players to learn how to play.
So I'm just limited to what I normally have
well they are free basic rules.
If you have other books that are AL legal, you'd be able to use those, yes
Otherwise, the free 2024 basic rules are your friend
Thanks for the help
OKOK got it
Howdy all
howdy!
as a beginner should i read the free rules first or the players handbook
Free rules probably
Do you own the players handbook?
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
i found a pdf online
i searched for player handbook and that was the first thing that popper up
hi, im filling out a looking for dm post and wondering what community game means for no 6?
im new and would like to start playing this with my family and i would take the role DM but as im watching more videos on this for the 2nd day now there is so much stuff i dont wanna get the rules wrong but i love the idea of making up the adventure any advice on how not to get overwhelmed or what i should do?
games with a lot of players and multiple DMs
prepare some general scenes and statblocks, and be ready to improvise
Take your time with learning the rules. Learn them passively over time, at your own pace, but I do highly recommend knowing where to find the rules.
As for making scenes, what Alfiz said
THIS
i had a guy use chatgpt for all the rules, which was a terrible idea and did not work
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf is this the proper rules also thank you for the advice ! helps alot i was worried i couldnt play until i got the rules down and with all the info i feel like it might be years XD
no, it is not

XD
(it bcz some people use tts for reading)
all good thank you tho im going to check that out rn!
Learn the rules first, then try making a practice character, and get that reviewed
Also, take your time and have fun doing it
You also don’t need to know all the rules, just the important ones
so around when should i join a campaigne
When you’ve got a good grasp of the rules
Hello ! New DM here running my first campaign and I need help, so far i have three players, a bard, a warlock and a druid.
My bard kinda generates gold from singing in taverns.
I gave my warlock a quest from her patron, that wasn't meant to be doable and served the plot. Well, foolish me she managed to do it. What king of reward can she expect to receive ? Nothing too broken of course. (They're around level 3)
Also as a side question, if my bard gets gold from performing, my warlock gets (idk what) from "contracts", what can my druid expect to receive that would be cool ?
Keep in mind that we're all completely new, so yes, we're probably all doing it wrong.
Thanks for reading !
A bag of holding could always be nice 😅 unexpected win gets unexpected joy of never worrying about carry weight lol
until you do have to worry anyway.
Also imo in a world of make-believe nothing is truly wrong within reason
there is one thing wrong with the bag of holding.
Two bags of holding?
...well, two, but one of those is obvious.
Yeah I thought about it, but, as it's all our first adventure I told them that we won't bother with weight, as I already had too much to keep track of, sorry 😔
...okay three but that's bags of holding, not bag.
Give them another quest. Or a spell scroll, maybe, check the list of uncommon magic items?
When you say the bard generates gold, what sort of amounts are you talking about?
Hehehehehe (boom)
one reason is if the bag is pierced/torn the contents are strewn across the astral plane
in other words you are not getting that stuff back. ever. probs.
and then... there's the bag man.
i'll let you google that one.
-# but yeah bags of holding are great usually
There's also the like, what. 7 minutes of oxygen that can be... Mean to NPCs
Seen it happen 😅
Better take their swords then, I hear some PCs use them to stab NPCs.
So far the only tavern he performed was a rich one, in a kingdom area, so he did 15 gold from a nat 20 on his performance, was that too much ?
XD
Pssh, that's reasonable and fair for a one-off performance with an excellent check.
well yeah but regular bags have that same limitation tbh.
-# but less air and whatnot.
10 minutes for one person btw
yep
not per person. I think maybe each one halves its remaining timer for simplicity's sake.
Hmmm. For the warlock what if the patron leaves a book of magic and such, that they gain more information from as they level up, like gain one extra spell for your character per the level they'd usually get spells. Two for later in the book. Idk. Gives them more playable options, but you don't have to give extra spell slots. Just so they aren't casting too much stuff, but they'd still be more flexible in what they can do
note: dead people do not need to breathe.
Kidnapped diplomats however do need at least some air until they're no longer needed. Then it's optional
Just open the bag once every ten minutes
@smoky epoch
I'd say 9 minutes just cause brain damage might make it hard for diplomacy
Your ruling, your rules
Pact of the Tome is incredibly similar to this idea. Especially Book of Ancient Secrets from the '14 version specifically...
This is an amazing idea, thanks a lot, I was worried that I wouldn't find anything
Yep 🙂 👍
hello. I'm a new player who's trying to get into Dnd so I thought someone could help me make a character
Yeah we can do that!
Though, I recommend reading the free rules first
where do i do that?
#learn-to-play has it in there
Though
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Read the first two chapters, and ask any questions
Hello 👀
Hallo
R u from germany?
As for making your first character, a good idea would be to look at what you're good at IRL, and use that to figure out class, then for race, honestly I think it's just personal preference. Each one is different though, so it's always fun to look through the options
I lowkey picked wizard bcz there cool I probably shouldn't do that 👀
Go with whatever you like. Have a look at their section in the Free Rules.
Nah it's a world built on imagination. Play what makes you feel cool and whatever looks fun.
Why not? Wizards are cool. Spellcasters are a tad more complex than non-casters, but they’re not unlearnable.
I ran a practice campaign the other day just to get the feel of it
It's a game and should always be treated as such in my opinion. And games should be fun ❤️
i read a story about a wizard who won an arm wrestling contest cuz he had high strength too.
Play whoever looks the coolest or fits your character
he did it to spite a problem player but it was fun anyway.
That's fantastic 💀
well this problem player kept taking things from the others and there was some weird house rule about contested stuff so... he just made his strength higher for a new wizard. won every time.
I can't understand this website
got his sword lol
..... Was it perhaps called Mashle, muscles and magic?
i don't remember
dude used cheap rings dolled up to look expensive as the bait though
There's an anime where a guy is born without magic so he just gets swole instead xD
Beats every magic user with brute strength
All ik is I want to get pets 👀
I'd love to do a DnD character based around him
But ik as a wizard I can make one a familiar or something like that
Fighters and barbs in high magic settings
Also monks
Is it called nash
There's a couple of ranger subclassws for that
yey pets
Or i dont remember the name nvm
You can! Warlock can too, with a few more options.
I wanna build a fighter/barbarian with a flaw where he thinks he's a wizard. It'd be hilarious
he casts fist
I want to be able to find them and train them
"I cast! MAGE HAND!"
What? You can't use mage ha-" (Knocked out immediately)
bonus points if he just slaps them
Ik sm are just pets and sm are beasts and ect
cuz he thinks mages can't punch or something silly.
Just need to think through how he'd do different spells
I didn't use spells for half my campaign I just hit ppl with a crowbar 👀
Fireball is just taking a swig of rum and blowing through a torch
Magic missile is a slingshot or whatever he can pick up and throw
Coordinate with your dm
Druid or ranger might fit there. Or warlock, they can get unlimited use of speak with animals.
I have none yet. Just ideas for a fighter who thinks he's a mage xD
as a dm i'd just make it hit every time just for the lulz.
Ritual caster
trying to find an online group when you live in australia is rough
everyone’s games are like 3am start time for me 😭😭😭
Okay I'm going to be a warlock then 👀
within reason.
A ritual caster cleric with high wis and animal handling prof
Im trying to make a monk but I want to add some magic to it. what should i make it's subclass?
Gtg cya
Turn them into the avatar 👀
Elements monk
what
Your evening is someone's morning and vice versa. Focus on when you're available.
The monk subclass, Warrior of the Elements
Dang aang is here
all four you say.
Exactly - I’m available in my evenings and i’m trying to find one at that time but my timezone makes it difficult
so many interesting groups being advertised but i’m limited by timezone
You might have more luck with a regional community server. An Australian roleplaying society, perhaps?
Howdy, I'm new. How do I play this game?
Trying to find one! Honestly the easiest method would be to find someone I already know and have them connect me with a group but unfortunately most of my friends and peers aren’t very nerdy like me 💔💔💔
Cast nerd and throw a Harry Potter book
You'll get there. Cast a broad net, have patience, perhaps raise a post on #looking-for-dm .

Oh
That Dyno post just above has plenty of links to guides and the Free Rules.
That would make sense
Skim through the first couple of chapters in the Free Rules, and maybe try bolting a character together for practice. You'll need to pick a class, species and background.
Jeez, there sure are a lot of words
1st chapter deals with the core mechanics and flow of the game, chapter 2 goes over how to create a character.
You don't have to memorize this - but becoming familiar with it will mean you'll better be able to play the game without wasting the rest of the table's precious playing time having to teach you everything.
Do ya'll run a class for this stuff or something like that?
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
Take it a bit at a time, use the videos if that helps. There's no rush.
Oh I thought they were asking about character classes.
Unfortunately we don't have the time/resources to provide tutorials beyond "please read through the basic rules and feel free to ask questions as you run across them".
There are some good videos on YouTube like https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN that can help aling with the free rules.
Ahh, that's too bad. Thanks anyways for the playlist though
There are some folks who post games in our LFG channels that are specifically for new to D&D folks but that's not necessarily common
It is just a matter of, read through the basic rules, and ask about anything specifically tripping you up
If we tried to explain everything in extra detail, it'd just be the basic rules but incredibly verbose
Dndbeyond has a lfg page. Thats how I found my group. ( using group loosely ..Haven't done session 0 yet) but!! There's a lot of people on there looking for folks
In the forums, if I remember right.
Hi chat I'm VERY new like just joined today. Randomly decided I wanted to play
DND is peak ur gonna love it
Does anyone know who Omin Dran is? Aq inc.
I would like to build a character close to what he is only as a halfling.. idk if this is what "newcomers" would be used for but...lol
heya!! ive always wanted to get into dnd and with the help of some friends i found this server!!
what are the things i should look for as a newbie when it comes to finding a campaign?
im also unsure of what forms to look for when it comes to information overall regarding non-homebrew related things, what are some good online sources?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Thankfully, you don't need to buy anything to play, because the basic rules have everything you need.
How do I get the pride tag here? I've been here a long time but only just recently got chatty cos I'm finally in a game. I don't see a role channel, I don't even remember how I got the Player tag.
New as well.. just realizing how much books are going to cost.
I at least need to get the players handbook. And thats like 30-50$ alone
In the channel side bar there's a Channels and Roles tab. Click there, and it's on the bottom in one of the submenus!
Unfortunately that's just the pricing on these things. Though unless you are looking for a specific player customization option, you don't need the Player's Handbook. The Basic Rules are free and have everything you need to play, even if they are a little bare when it comes to customization.
Oh uh. Like half the channels I saw previous disappeared.
Not sure why they disappeared, but you can re enable whatever you prefer from the same menu I mentioned before
I think i actually downloaded that on dndbeyond for free. Im about to go check it out
I'm fixing it... Just gotta click them manually on that channels and roles tab.

@slate crypt the free basic rules are linked above, read them and ask any questions you might have
Nope! Nothing in their species features say they can do that.
Are there ever any kind of "tutorials" for beginners organized here??
cause when i searcged for dm, everybidy seemed so experienced😭
I teach beginners
for a fee??
@slate crypt this
i know...but i meant some server organised campaigns
I CAN T BELIEVE I MISSED THE STRANGER THINGS GIVEAWAY
Oh I see. Yeah itd be kinda dope to have a newbie one-shot with pre-mades or something quick whipped up.
yeah cause i posted smth on looking for dm and i think nobody wants campaigns with newbies
@slate crypt get dndbeyond. There's forums there. Many people are willing to play with newbies. Im one as well.
At least its one source.
Oh
I dont think you need the app. Their website. Just look it up
so you re searching for a dm as well or you are one and you sre searching for players
Im a player. I searched literally two days ago. I dropped my discord@ in the forum and let him know im new and if hes ok with it just hit me up. He did. We had a vid call on here just to see what I wanted out of the campaign other questions. But really its just that simple.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/search?q=New player campaign
Maybe this will help.
thank you very much albus percival wulfric brian dumbledore

@slate crypt I see. Ok so when you get there just search " new player campaign "
If that don't work...idk bud.. I'm sorry. But there ARE groups you can find on this server. All the way at the bottom.
Hi! My name is Ann, and I'm relatively new to DND, and I'm looking for a new group to play with!.
Yo
#find-a-game has the info on using this server's Looking for Game/Group channels!
Hellooo
Ahoy!
Welcome to the server!
I’m so confused over everything, does anybody know dnd well and can help teach me or 😦
I really wanna learn to play
I swear I’m a quick learner
I mean I only know stuff from watching Critical Role for years. Beyond that my DM has to walk me through potential actions I can take.
A looooot of it is learn-as-you-go. DM had to like walk me through sheet creation box by box.
I'd recommend finding a newbie-friendly game with a patient DM that can spell stuff out for you. Like I did. 😛
Generally I feel that players don't need as much of an encylopediac knowledge of the game. That burden is on DM's moreso, I feel. Otherwise people could get cheaty (accidentally or otherwise) and a DM needs to be on top of the rules.
...But I'm not an authority. I'm just vibing.
I promise anything is better than me rn lol
I’ve never even done anything other than read dnd themed books
And watch stranger things lol
Stranger Things does nothing to actually highlight how the game works. Mostly just the friends and community aspect of it.
I know that’s what I mean. I know nothing
I don't know the command here to make that little "Ready to play dnd?" box popup but scroll up just a little bit.
Otherwise just ask questions.
Yep, the whole section near the bottom of the channel lists. #find-a-game and that whole section.
Okkk thanks
As a note it might take a bit to find a game that suits your time frame and preferences. Getting 3-6 people together at the same time every week is the stuff of legends.

For future reference, the command is ?new!
i do need to add that having a basic understanding is a requirement for almost every game
I mean yeah, sure. I just kinda got that covered from watching CR.
Can someone explain the "ready action" function to me?
I heard someone talk about a Cleric that (if I interpreted them correctly) in a turn used Spirit Guardians, ran around hitting monsters with it, and then using the "ready action" function to run around hitting them again before they had their turn. Is that possible?
Short version: I believe not.
excuse me , can someone explain to me how to fill character dnd sheet in dnd beyond ?
Sure! You need a class, species and background for starters. Have you looked at the Free Rules and made your choices?
Gotcha, I meant to ask in #optimization so I'll copy paste there, and add a question about other tips for how to utilize it
I choose sorce class and what should i click , or push ?
how do you play dnd?

everything, the ones with blue outlines have choices but everything has stuff for you
the double command goes hard, as always
xD
There something miss , when i fill it man ,like my background character sheet was blank and other else
but yeah, that isnt possible
maybe i miss something ? 🤔
lets go over what you did
can you send the sheet here? you need to set it to public
i cant touch the plus button tu upload
what menus have you done so far?
until the last , option (pdf)
and when i see it the background character was blank
did you select everything at every page?
and more specifically what did you do in the abilities section
let me see again wait
someone else gotta take over for a sec, imma be gone for a bit
in abilities option only choose stat sir , there is no option to fill background
When you go to "home" or your character settings, you can set it to "public", which then lets you post a link to it. That way, you can post the link here and we'll be able to see the sheet.
still same mate
Make sure you're scrolling through everything and expand on everything it has on each page.
To be clear, I don't mean "upload a pdf", I mean just posting the link.
But if it doesn't let you access the sheet, just click through the tabs at the top and see if you haven't assigned something.
Wait. I was assuming yall were using beyond
Kagerou did say that they want help with a DDBeyond sheet.
yes
Uhh tbh searchin one by one is hard maybe you can guide me to fill it mate from beginning?
Sure. So first you see the HOME tab, right? Here, I suggest you just select "Core Rules" and leave the rest of the content and sources unchecked.
on discord or dnd beyond ?
On DnD Beyond. None of the character building process will be inputted on Discord.
So it seems I couldn't get the link through the app. I had to go through the website to be able to copy the link idk why.
For your class at level 1 there shouldn't be many choices. You see "Core Sorcerer Traits", for example, right? Just tap the blue colored field and choose an option from the dropdown.
Works
alright @dim knoll, tell us when youre done with class features and what you did
ok am alr fill the blue notification one in clas sorce trait
next ?
if nothing is blue anymore, yes
Next, you'll see the background option. There is a dropdown called -Choose an Option-, which is the main choice you make here.
click that, and choose a fitting background
The other options (character details, physical characteristics, etc.) are cosmetic and completely up to you. There aren't really any rules around those, so feel free to fill them in later too.
you dont have to fill them out btw (the character details parts)
what happen if i choose custom background?
are the text will appear in sheet ?
stick to the normal backgrounds for now, and yes
Hey guys ! New comer here 😄 Is there a place for I can find a dnd group or something ? I would like to play online with discord etc if it exist

https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/155830728
are that was enough ?
for playing dnd ?
you need to select spells
Bet me to it
and you get an ability score improvement from elf
do you mean cantrip from sorce ?
no, spells
you have one atm, if you look at spells theres a manage spells option, click that
on the sheet itself
me ?

Go to your non-pdf character sheet, press spells, then manage spells

Oh ok
You're only going to be able to help one of these two at a time, Nugget.
I can try
İ can wait :)
I came here to help you so imam do that, though tbh I’d just recommend reading
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
Thanks for the link :D
after i fill the 2 spell should i fill the cantrip to ?
Yes
What does the “primary ability mean”?
Do you mean “what does “primary ability” mean?”
If so, it’s the stat the character scales best on, and uses for their abilities.
In your case, charisma
Hey guys I’m looking for a 1 round and would like too see what dnd is and to get used to it I have never played
#looking-for-players is where you can browse ads. Reply in the threads when you're interested or message the person who posted (if they specify that).
Worth mentioning: you're less likely to be included in a game if you haven't made a go of learning the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
I wish there was a way to connect with local people to join a dnd group. I’ve never played but am so interested
You’re done
Well, except backstory. We can’t see that
Libraries or a local game store work
The ways to search in-person are:
- Local libraries
- School clubs
- Local game/hobby stores
- Sites like Facebook, Reddit, MeetUp, and NextDoor to search for local groups
If those places don't offer D&D, they can maybe point you to groups that do!
Likewise, been looking for ages. Timezones be a real pain.
How to replace the feature? i want my character doesnt fear because he was have insomnia so doesnt know about ghost or something
But what do i do with it :(
You can’t do that unfortunately, immunity to fear isn’t smt a character just has from character creation
Hol up

Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.

We can take a break if you want, get back to it later. Take your time.
it took me four times going manually through the character creation process using pen and paper before it sorta clicked where numbers were coming from and what they meant.
Thanks a lot
Can we do this tomorrow? İ think i need sone sleep ;(
Sure, take your time
Four might not be enough for me 😭

Hi all. 👋
Absolute new player here... (I'm technically not even a player yet, as I've never played). I've suddenly found myself here looking for direction...
I have dice, I have both 5e and 2024 players handbooks and I'm just looking for some hints and tips to finding myself a group online I guess.
I'm older (in my 40s, not sure if that's relevant) and can probably spare 1 evening a week and would be fairly committed. I wouldn't want to be DM as I'm way to shy for that plus wouldn't know what I'm doing.
Would reading the basic rules and joining something like roll20 (or other) for an open group that's happy for newbies be a good starting point.... or.....?
Any advice would be greatly welcome. Thanks in advance.
Yeah reading the basic rules would be a good idea - check out #learn-to-play as it has useful links and resources to help get you started.
And welcome to the official D&D Discord server!
Feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them.
As far as finding a group to play with, we have our Looking For Game channels where you can potentially find a DM, a community, or even paid games.
See #find-a-game for more information on how to use those channels.
Thank you for all that @echo kelp . First daft question, is there a reason to play a paid game over a free one? Such as, do you get a more dedicated group or something by paying?
No reason other than guaranteeing a spot at a D&D game
and even that can break down under the reality of life and schedules
The intent of a paid game is that it can be higher quality, because the DM has more reason to invest their time, energy, and resources into improving the gameplay experience. But its important to remember that every game of D&D is just run by someone with a passion for the game and the availability to do so. But at the end of the day they're all just regular people. There's no overarching oversight or quality assurance. So nothing is guarenteed, even if you pay money for it
I hear ya.... Do some DM do games specifically for new players? Ie a shart campaign where they are happy to break everything down just full of new people etc... Or is it typically always a dive into the deep end? I only ask before I spend the next month learning the rules before playing. 😂😂
I tried to do one, but somehow only had like two applications 😛
Yeah I don't know why
I should note many groups are fine with new to D&D folks - but it really helps if the new folks have put some time and effort into learning on their own. That allows the group to spend more time playing rather then spending precious game time teaching all the things.
Yep, you can definitely find campaigns that advertise themselves as “beginners welcome” or something along those lines. But honestly, most DMs are ok with beginners joining, even if they don’t directly advertise it. You should just ask them before joining. My main recommendation would be to find a campaign where you start at as low of a level as possible. Starting at level 1 is ideal for new players since it gradually leans you into the game. More experienced groups will often start at higher levels. That should be avoided if you’re new, since it could lead to information overload and choice paralysis
Ah don't worry, I would definitly want to be at least half to grips with the rules before I joined. The manual isn't small though. 😅
You don't have to memorize it - but having a good feel for the core game mechanics and how to make and use a character sheet will go a long way.
Thanks a lot for the info. Much appreciated. 👌 Right, I'm gonna start reading (I already did, but I'll do it better!) 😅 ...
Which incidently the first two chapters of the free rules cover those topics: the core game mechanics and rythem of gameplay and how to make a character.
My best advice is to know where to find the information if you get stuck
And to take your time, and ask any questions. Us folks will be happy to help.
Learning the basics before you start is good, but don’t feel like you need to memorize everything. There will be 4-5 other people in your group to remind you of anything if you forget. Plus you can always pull out the book while playing. That’s very normal. It’s honestly a better idea to learn where to find information in the rule book, rather than trying to memorize what it actually says
And should I start with 5e or 2024, or is that completely just a personal choice?
Really depends on the group you're playing with but I'd lean 2024 as that's where D&D is going
Basically new D&D materials will more and more be based on and utilize the refinements the 2024 materials made to D&D 5th edition.
OK doke, all very useful guys... much appreciated.
Personal choice. Both rulebooks are “5e” but the 2024 version has been updated and streamlined with the lessons they’ve learned over the past 10 years. It’s also much more beginner friendly.
I mentioned this in the message above, but I think it’s important to go into a little more detail. When people use the term “5e” to refer to the 2014 rules specifically, that’s a bit of a misnomer. Both versions of the rules are considered to be “5e.” This is important to be clear about, because the only thing that the 2024 PHB replaces is the 2014 PHB. All other 5e rulebooks are still legal to use, like Tasha’s Cauldron of everything for example. You can pick a class that’s described in the 2024 PHB and use that as your baseline, then choose a subclass that’s in a different book, like the ones in Tasha’s Cauldron, even though they were written before the 2024 PHB was released
Yeah, thanks Colossus. That makes sense..... I'll start by reading and learning from the 2024 (just as reading both would be wasteful and too much to contend with). Thanks again.
@rare dagger im pretty new myself idk id be the one to help you lol
hello idk if this is the right channel but ive never played dnd and ive really wanted to play so idk im looking about how to get into it :> if u have any advice hiii ty

^ Useful resources to start with - including a link to the free basic D&D rules
I recommend checking out at least the first two chapters of the free basic rules as they cover the core game mechanics and rythm of gameplay and how to create a character.
Feel free to ask any specific questions as you run into them
ooo ty!!
i have a question tho, there is a part of the server for finding games. are dms/players usually adverse to playing with a newcomer or like can i (after reading the rules and familiarising myself) try to get involved that way
Yeah we have some Looking For Game channels - see #find-a-game to learn how to use them.
You'll likely increase your chances of finding a game/group though if you have a bit of familiarity with the core game mechanics and how to create a character.
nodding
thank you!! well ill get to reading then :>
Many groups are fine with taking on a new to D&D player but they'll appreciate those who have put in some effort to learn on their own so the group can spend more time playing D&D then having to teach you everything.
(don't worry though - they'll still help you out and teach you)
Well most of them will I believe
I have played uhmmm a bit of pathfinder 3e and technically did ONE session of dnd 5e but its all kind of hazy so im treating myself as a newcomer x3
I get that, I've played like twice over five years ago, and out of boredom I return
Welcome back!
I'd still say* I'm pretty new to the game though lol
I've been playing for years and I still mess rules up and forget things!
The campaign I joined only lasted two sessions but it was really fun
Glad you had fun!
Yeah, I'm aiming to find a group to hopefully relearn. I think I remember basic stuff like character creation but that's it, so I'm gonna have to reread everything
Hello
Hallo
hullo
I'm just wondering see I'm thinking about making a half bearkin half giant character I'm doing a barbarian build so I was going with a war hammer
I don’t think there’s a half bearkin half giant in the official books I don’t think
would def be homebrew i'm guessing
Homebrew, or it has to be justified by "this character's dad's blood is more dominant, and so they have their dad's side of the abilities only" for example
yeah true
Would anyone be down to teach me about online dnd. I watched a lot of videos on how to play but I couldn’t understand it
?tag new online
Yall i need an idea for my new type/element of hombrew magic, i already got ash, gems and ki magic
maybe sound magic?
or ego magic, ive always liked that one
Ain’t that just thunder
i was gonna say that, but then i thought if i made a sound school i would put thaumaturgy and knock in there as well
That is a good point
Ego magic hmmm
Maybe this could make a good physical enchantment spells that base on current ego
Yep, will, forgot it was there
Hi
Need some D&D advice!
How do you get over the nerves and awkwardness when it comes to roleplay?
My group have only done session 0, and I had this entire idea in my head of what my character would be like but I was so nervous to roleplay it! Any tips or advice on how to get into character/the headspace? I was a dramatic art student and loved acting, but am struggling to do it in this scenario (probably first time nerves tbh!)
Describe your character's discussions in 3rd person
"<Character name> decides this doesn't feel right and asks the guard what's really happening."
Describe your character and their actions/choices/dialogue in 3rd person
It’s not the same for everybody, but trying to relax and trying to think about becoming my character instead of acting like them helped me. Trying to immerse yourself and becoming a character is better than mimicking them.
Or as UndyingNoob stated, go for third person descriptions, they’re more beginner friendly and perfectly usable.
Yeah we're playing these games to have fun together and there's a bit of vulnerability sharing a bit of ourselves through our characters and how we run them.
So it's completely normal to feel nervous and worried to run those characters and try and actually create a vocal "voice" to them.
So building a degree of trust with your fellow players and DM can help reduce the nerves/tension. Also focussing on the fact that you're there to have fun (along with everyone else). And then practicing/doing it. That helps reduce the nerves/awkwardness.
Folks in #character-discussion can help provide feedback
Ok so I want to make a DnD campaign for my family in which each region is different and whenever my players feel like it they can leave the the region through teleportation which is random by a dice toll but I'll like to make a twist in which the Outer Gods from HP lovecraft break that randomness and force them to their realm.
The whole story is a simple adventurer party in which their goal is to be the best but the Outer Gods have other plans for them in the whole gimmick I want to go with
Hey what is the weirdest monster in dnd i want to throw something at my party to freak them out
My cleric has nightmares with Rakshasas
Their more cool then weird
Blob of Annihilation?
Hello 👋
I'm new here....Hope I am welcome ?
I suggest getting some feedback in #dm-discussion !
heyy ^^, brand new here, already played dnd once irl before, loved it and want to try again :3
Welcome to the server!
is there a chat to help people make characters? i got a general idea of a character but i don't rlly know how to put it paper rlly
#character-discussion would be it!
Unless you're talking basics, in which case, this is the right channel.
Hey! New here 🙈
Welcome!
Both to be honest 😅

@severe salmon the free basic rules are linked above, read them and ask any questions you might have
🙏🏻 thank you! ☺️
if its for 4-6 and its now 5-6 i see no problem
Would it be too easy as a result? Cuz like, aren't campaigns designed for 4 players first and foremost
I've no idea if 5-6 players means that DMs are expected to improvise the difficulty as a result
4 to 6, meaning if its 5 or 6 its still designed for it
Right fair enough, ty ty
There's a few options there, like:
- Discuss with the group to see what kind of difficulty they enjoy. Maybe they're happy with an easier game.
- Step up the difficulty for all encounters.
- Step up the difficulty only for the more meaningful encounters.
#dm-discussion can give you some more advice on the subject, though.
anyone has a free beginer friendly website / app to create a character sheet?
dndbeyond
DnDBeyond has a free tier - can have up to 6 characters.
Do note that unless you own additional books on DnDBeyond or are in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing you’ll be limited to the free character options
But the free stuff is perfectly fine for starting out and seeing if you like the game enough to invest in other books
Foundry, fantasy grounds or roll20?
Are you asking this as a DM?
Also a better question for #dm-discussion or #third-party
Oh no as a player sorry
Im a complete noob with 0 knowledge

As a player, you don't actually pick which Virtual Table Top program you use. Your DM will choose for you.
I don't have a DM I want to play online
Not quite. One could choose a platform, then search its LFG threads
first learn the rules in the bot post linked above
Can't I choose a platform and like matchmaker with a DM? Idk how this works haha
Otherwise, YouTube has a few comparison videos on the various VTTs
When you find a DM, they'll tell you which method you'll be using to play online.
You could try Roll20, that has listings for games there.
Okay thanks
Yeah idk anyone who plays and stranger things and baldurs gate 3 has peaked my interest
okay, so as i said first learn the rules and then #find-a-game is a good way to find a game
so, little question about stat distibution and characters in general, do you make your characters "now" and have a bank of them and when you start a campaign you just pull the sheet you want? and also for the stats, how does it works? do you roll "new" stats everytime you pick that character orr you roll them once and those are the stats for all your campaign?
so you normally dont reuse characters, and you can make characters right now but youll probably need to either adjust or completely remake due to cc rules per campaign
You can certainly develop a character concept, but your DM will need to approve your sheet, and some may likely want to see you roll your stats if they don't know you/trust you. Whatever sheet you come up with may be rejected in whole, or in part, by the DM. So unless you're doing it for practice, save actually creating the sheet until you join a table.
alrr, thanks didn't want to say anything about cheating, fear of sounding like "can i put 20 in all my stats and then whine when dm doesn't bleive me"
It's usually pretty obvious to a DM you've fudged your stats when you show up with all 20s yes
ment 20's roll so i think its 15 in stats?
That would be true if you took that literally
:wheeze:
God that'd be so funny.
you roll 4d6 drop the lowest for stats
S'why I just support point buy.
"u cheated ur stat" "stares at the 25's all across the bords" "..." "proof?"
Anyway, lets not get lost in the weeds here. Like I said, by all means develop a character concept, but don't roll up a sheet without your DM - unless ofc you want to practice creating a sheet
Which, if you haven't ever done before, may be a good idea
the way i saw character creation was making level x builds and then just rocking new names and stats every time you "use" that sheet
I have no idea what you saw, but it sounds like a player who has a go-to character concept they use again and again, just rolling it anew each time, and maybe giving a different name or flavour to fit the setting
thats what i had in mind seeing how many people are talking about builds and how they like playing x
Plenty of people also just build characters independent of being in a game.
If you want to further develop your character concept, there's a channel for that: #character-discussion
Im creating my first ever character for a campagin and was wondering if I could post my sheet here to ask for advice, if I did any errors on my sheet, or if any adjustments should be done. Noted Ive never played, and have created very little characters before so im very green horn.
I think #character-discussion is the better spot for feedback on a sheet, generally.
ok cool thank you
can you post character sheet in character-discussion chanel?
You can link to it either from D&D Beyond or uploaded to a site like Imgur.
so I see that rations and arrows have quantities, do i have to eat and can only shoot 20 arrows before I cant use my ranged attacks anymore?
Yes and yes, depending on how your DM runs things
If you only have 20 arrows, you can only shoot 20 times, yes. There are also rules for picking arrows back up after the fight.
Though note: some DMs don't track ammunition, so it's best to check with your DM as well.
Many DMs will just handwave that and give you infinite ammo
But ya gotta eat, many DMs will also require you to eat a ration per 24 hours or suffer a penalty
Others will have you roll to see how many you are able to recover from a battle field
But again, it depends, some DMs handwave both
I haven’t been playing long, and mostly one shots, but I’ve never had a dm mention rations 😅 (granted we have been offered food by various parties along the adventures so maybe that was taken into account)
There's a ton of variability in the game. Some folks insist on the survivalist elements; some handwave 'em. Some tables use alignment; plenty don't. As DOSH said, it's generally good to check with the table!
So I literally just started and I have begun to make a character. I'm not in any campaigns yet. Could I get some tips?
Tips on what specifically? The game has a lot of elements to it!
So I'm getting ability scores on my character right now, and I don't know whether to do point buy or manual. My friend told me it depends on the DM but I'm not in a campaign
Standard Array is a good bet: it's simple and gives you set numbers to assign as you like.
99% of games will gladly accept Standard Array.
Alright sounds good, I also would be playing mostly off beyond, does that matter much or it depends on dm?
Up to the DM.
Is there an alternative character maker? I don't have a phb and it's impossible to find one where I'm from, the people that I played with ordered them from america. Dnd beyond isn't complete if I also haven't bought the resource books
Any character maker would have access to the free material as a baseline and you would need to pay for any other content.
Oof. Welp. I'll just have to find pdfs lol. Thanks.
I've made my character, he doesn't have a back story yet though.
If you want help fleshing out something, we have #character-discussion for those sorts of topics.
Okay thanks!

Okay is it harder than bg3? Because that game is brutal
i dont think you understand how dnd works
the difficulty can vary per game, and when you die you dont just "respawn"
That's why I'm trying to learn so then I can understand bg3
I know everything is a dice roll
untrue
Okay maybe that's just how it is for bg3 then
things that are not impossible or very easy are dice rolls
A D20 roll can happen when there's a meaningful chance of success or failure, and the result matters to the story.
Okay maybe bg3 is harder because that game feels like it's designed for you to lose dice rolls
Just turn off karmic dice it makes anything from the nine hells look like heaven
With BG3 and D&D, it's like the difference between playing Microsoft Flight Simulator and actually flying a plane
The former is a realistic and enjoyable simulator of the latter
But it's still a simulation
Not everything is a dice roll for the record but certain aspects could be dice rolls depending on the situation and whether the DM deems it as such
Bg3 is also not that hard but there are dnd campaigns faster and more simple than it
A campaign can be as short as the approximate duration between the nautiloid > travelling to a certain village you first arrive which is really easy
