Or should I pick just one
They do different things so take both if you want both
I see
you'll still be able to roll for anything

Hi im new to dnd. Like never played except for except for baldursgate. And me and my friend, who has played once before, would love to play. We had a friend help us with character sheets and have a basic understanding of how it works cause of them but they donāt have time so we have no one to play with. Any advice on where to find beginner online groups :)
Iām finished first build

@shadow mural ah i see you went gnome, eh?
I finished my first build
I didnt do any background cuaee it would take some time
do a background
which is not backstory, background is a mechanic
Yeah because my build is strong with charisma intelligence and wisdom and gnome has all of those buffed
I meant like Backstory
now i suggest making a new character, try building a level 3 character.
Bro that took me like half a hour right
practice makes perfect. you obviously don't have to do it now, but i recommend you get used to it.
level 3 is where a lot more features come "on line"
Ok
if you'd like a quick little once over of the sheet, go to the HOME tab on the character builder, scroll down, make the character public.
then view your character, grab the url, and shoot it over to me
Won e I do my level 3 can I start looking for people to play with or even better could I be a gm?
Once
welcome to the hobby! check the looking for games section at the bottom of this discord, and also check roll20 (website)
start looking now, find a group that's happy to have newcomers (most groups)
even now, i still practice building characters... and i've been playing ttrpg for decades
it's going to depend on the group, but that's an important thing to consider for sure
Most online players expect at least voice
i prefer my online games to be purely text, but they are glacially slow paced
Ok good to know
No one's going to expect you to do any voice acting, though.
I wouldnāt mind talking itās just something Iād have to get used to
if i'm gonna be talking, i'd prefer to be at the actual table with a group
That sounds fun too but I have no one to play with
Honestly one of the most beneficial parts of playing D&D. Talking, improvising skills.
check local game stores, libraries, school clubs
@shadow mural this post to help get started
it's a worldwide hobby, i'm sure you can find some folks
Lol one of my players for like 3 years is in Australia. We play every 2 weeks.
Sounds cool
Plenty of people play in Australia.
Video games took a lot of inspiration from D&D
Yeah, D&D shares an absolute ton with most modern RPGs. Lends a ton is probably better put
modern "fantasy" games borrow heavily from d&d-style tropes
While the current edition of DnD (5th edition) is only 11 years old, DnD has been around forever. It's safe to say that most modern fantasy series/media are heavily influenced by DnD.
Just like how original DnD was heavily influenced by Lord of the Rings!
Iām meant to be studying for a test rn and Iām talking about dnd at midnight šššš
which was influenced by fairy tales
go, study
Good luck on your test!
accurate, this isn't the community for that type of discussion
but anyway, practice building characters, get familiar with how it functions.
try building things that you might not like as much, just to have better understanding of how they function
when you find a game you'll be ready to build one that works for that game
Wait can I do one of your games? Or nah

Iāve seen this
@shadow mural the bot post above for finding games, dont ask here
that section, and roll20 (website) are great places to get started
Mb Iām still learning the rules
in person: game stores, libraries, and school clubs
I submitted a form
for an in person game?
No online i assume
Using this...
ah, okay! submitted info for a game?
Info for a game
I applied to find a dm
you want to run a game?
he wanted to find one
No it said as a player is should apply to find a dm so I did that
or answer in a looking for players post, thats how you get most groups
I see
looking for community can work well too
oh definitely
I think you'd get better results of you look at game postings over at #looking-for-players
Ur right
Thx a lot I already found one promising table
niiiiice
Best of luck!
Any DMs available to help me. Iām newish to DnD Iāve played a few games (one shots mostly) so Iām looking for advice on a character. Please message me if interested. Thank you.

Cool thank you. New here.
A weird question... But does anyone have any recommendations for an irl DnD session campaign. I wanna try and bring my friends into this game but worry I might bore them or we get too confused
Try a one-shot maybe? Donāt have plan for anything more than one session.

Oh right, does the one shot have premade characters, I want them to get a feel for the game before having them create their own
Our group (mostly new players, lvl 4) can choose one uncommon item between us... some of them think winged boots... I think mizzium apparatus... what do you reckon?
I have a tried and true one shot for you if you want me to give you all the info. Iāve run it many times and it is always good. Simple, explores the foundation of TTRPGS with conversation opportunities, investigations, physical obstacles, tactics, magic, basically everything. Itās based on one of the 3.5 game set one-shots.

Hi everyone, I'm new here, could you tell me if it's allowed or if there's a specific channel for promotion? I'm an artist, I draw RPG characters ^^
I believe we have #dnd-advertisements for that purpose!
i wanted to ask. Is this server also for lfg? Like to find an active group to play dnd with
like do people actually find groups using it
Sure is!
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.

usually large servers are very unfriendly to newcomers
very rude in general and they act like i just ruined their day

Hey okay so i used the character creator to build my character sheet
i dunno if its bad or not
like i just used it in a default way, only adding backstory and stuff like that
but i just chose stuff i felt like
thats normal, and how youre supposed to do it (kinda)\
Impossible for us to say. It's really going to come down to what tools the group you join uses.
Personally, I think D&D Beyond streamlines the process, but it doesn't always result in the player knowing how to make a character on their own.
Default is usually good. You can post the link to the character sheet over in #character-discussion if you'd like us to take a look at it further.

So what do I do next. I have saved the pdf of the sheet

the looking for players messages look quite intimidating. I dont know if any are open to a newbie. I wanted to see if there was a group which played around this time of the day exactly or roughly.
just ask if they are open to newbies
Well the timings is the bigger problemm to me but alr ill check
Groups may or may not advertise themselves as open to new players, but that doesn't mean they decline new players outright. Most DMs are willing to accept new players who have put the time and effort in.
As for timing, that will always be tough no matter what. Getting 5 people to all be able to dedicate 3-4 hours of their day once a week will always be hard.
That's the hardest part.
Iāve sent out a few messages trying to join campaigns and have had no luck so far idk what to do
Just wait and keep trying! Finding a group is one of the hardest parts of DnD, next to scheduling. It's not unusual for it to take a few days to a few weeks between when you start and when you actually sit down to play.
Hey guys, new joineee here, good with cleric and support, so if anyone needs a awesome cleric in their team, let me know
dont advertise here, look at #find-a-game for where to advertise
ohh got it, thanks
you sent only one, right? try some more!
Do we have a way we can just observe an existing session
I would really like to observe a live session and learn
ask people
It's not super likely that your average DM will let you sit in on a game, but thankfully there are plenty of games that have been recorded. These are called Live Play games, and you can watch the table play directly.
i myself let people spectate my games but thats a me thing
Popular ones include the Critical Role series or Dimension 20.
I know streaming sites almost always have a game going live. Check the channels for tabletop games or DnD specifically.
Thanks guys, I will check those out, just joined the group and going through channels one at a time
Iāve sent personal messages to Iāve gotten one response but I donāt think they where looking for new players
hi!! so i've been trying to get into step 1 of D&D which i believe is character creation, but there are just so many little bits and pieces and i get a little overwhelmed with what species actually exist in D&D and which ones don't and all of the points and whatnot. does anyone have a 100% beginners character template or any tips for navigating it all? š
Have you followed these steps? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
Hmm... Dyno wasn't helping me very much.
oh! i will definitely look through this, it looks extremely helpful! thank you!!
For a beginner, the Basic Rules in that link have a list of a bunch of free, official player options. I'd recommend sticking to those while you're still new.
Hello, recently joining in this world of D&D . And i wan“t to know how to play it. Cause i am curios about it. I just search a little bit about how to create a character. Well, right now im interest in the player role not the dungeon master ... mayber later i can learn a little by about it

Hey guys so I have purchased both phb but im wondering if there are any other books that would be good to purchase, Maybe something that gives me access to more races amd maybe one that has items amd descriptions of them?
For character development: Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Caudron of Everything
Monster manual for more races
For species, check out Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse.
For items, the Dungeon Master's Guide or Tasha's Cauldron.
The Monster Manual doesn't include races/species.
Sorry my bad, I was thinking of Monsters of the Multiverse. Thanks for the correction
Thanks for the help guys, I had assumed that the dms guide was just for dms and I dont plan on every doing that lol. But I'll probably pick it up for the items
Appreciate the help
Technically, players don't actually get to choose any magic items by default, so that's why it's in the DMs hands.
Ahh I understand that, I'm more so just curious
I have a question about combat and reactions I have a fun idea that I want experienced DM and dnd player to get their opinion but would that be something to discuss in this chat, or would it be discussed on homebrew?
Depends on the exact question!
Well it's this, is it OK to change how rules work in combat to make it more interesting and give player agency on other people's turn?
I don't play regular dnd I just make adventures and let my friends play out scenarios but they want actual dnd stuff and I was wondering if this is ok.
Is it ok? Sure, if your table agrees on it. I wouldn't recommend fiddling with something as extremely volatile as the action economy, unless everyone involved (both DM and players) were DnD veterans, though.
The vast, vast majority of all player facing abilities in the game are grounded in the action economy: that is to say "what a player can do, and when". Changing that will have significant ramifications in nearly every rule the game presents.
Ah ok, I am just having a bit of a hard time with having my friends actually want to be engaged in combat unless it's has like an important story element and conversations in combat, since after someone takes a turn unless you are being interacted directly you really don't have to pay attention, also kinda figured out combat is pretty much the same no matter the enemy, just a check mark scenario but alright ty.
That's getting into homebrew territory but I've heard of some groups who allow characters to use their reactions to help creat combo actions amongst the party. Could check with folks in #homebrew for more ideas.
At early levels, enemies might feel similar due to balancing their threat levels. Enemies will become more diverse as your players gain more options.
As for keeping players engaged on other peoples' turns, that's an age-old problem for any DM. You can check in #dm-discussion if you'd like advice on how to keep your combats more enaging.
Ok I will ask there as well, I just want a few opinions from different people since yes we use the rules dnd has but I do let them do stuff with their reactions on the play stories I do with them.
Ok ty, but in my experience maybe this is just because of how my friends are but every combat pretty much boils down to is there multiple enemies how many can I get in a particular shape, are there caster? Stand out of LOS of them or out of counter spell range and lastly can they out damage the opponents if yes just blast if no Cc. That's pretty much how all combats I have done boils down to xD, so I changed the rules abit, I will ask in homebrew what they think, since the changes I made do impact alot of stuff that aren't exactly things that come up in regular dnd, for example my friends never picked lighting bolt when it's just a harder to use fiteball since it's a line instead of a circle, after I changed the stuff they actually have a use for lighting bolt as well as in combat use for subtle sorcery other than just making it so that enemies can't counter spell. But ty I will go check the dm-discussion.
#dm-discussion absolutely is the way to go. I mean this in the most constructive way possible: if your players are approaching every single combat encounter in the same way, the issue lies with how you, the DM, are building the encounters.
Alright ty.
any iranians here im looking for a group to play with
Iām new to DMing and Iāve got most of it down but I canāt rap my head around how challenge levels work. Any suggestions?
Check with the fine folks in #dm-discussion who can explain the finer points of CR and how to use it as a rough guide in balanacing encounters.
Oh sorry bout that, thanks
Oh no worries! It's a big server - use #channel-guide to find the best channel for a specific topic
why is getting into a campaign so hard
There are SOOO many factors involved
Time zones, schedules, specific values, location, etcā¦
that hasnt even been an issue yet
people just dont respond
i send a dm and a comment on the post saying im interested and i get nothing back
That does suck but Iām guessing they get 100ās of folks if they are offering a free a game because the ratio of players to DMs is astronomical and a HIGH percentage of folks arenāt willing or canāt pay so when aDM is offering a free game they probably literally get 100ās of responses
Itās just a matter of patience and persistence, far more in that case but not impossible
So many more players looking to join a game than DMs running one, so there is a lot of competition, requiring you to stand out
A good idea is to give more than just "I'm interested" when trying to get into a game
If I as a DM get like six people that all say some variation of "I'm interested" or "I'd like to join" and nothing more, none of those six are gonna stand out, and I might as well pick at random who to talk to (And likely picking someone that feels like a good fit before I've chatted with all of them)
Hi

Hi Iām new
Okay so like what is a great old one exactly
Are there classes for beginners or are the classes just solely based on preference and play style
#dnd-newcomers
Is this channel, where you can ask any questions.
#learn-to-play
Is a good guide for the rules.
#find-a-game
Is to help you find some games
Just some resources
There are SIMPLER classes, if thatās what you mean
And some were definitely designed for more advanced or more new players.
But Iād recommend going with preferred play styles and themes first
For example, marginals such as Fighter and Rogue donāt have to worry about managing spells, so theyāre considered more ābeginner friendlyā, but any class is learnable
So letās say I want to play rogue and I want to sneak and steal something. The DM controls the story so can he just make it to where I never get the chance to do anything
No, you still control your character
The dm can definitely say ānoā if the action is controversial to the rules or making others uncomfortable, but stealing is a rogues entire thing
The dm COULD make the theft a difficult task though
Such as putting up guards, alarms, etc.
So how does the dice come into play? Because if the DM can just deny you, what would be the point of the die? Is it to see how strong the outcome is?
The underlying premise is that a good DM will not completely shutdown or counter a player
At the same time, a player should also be engaged with the game in good faith.
Oh so basically you really have to have players with integrity
In any case, yeah the dice decide success/failure at a given task. The DM should reasonably set a difficulty level (target number) to beat, at which point the dice + your bonuses determine your chances of success/failure
So like in baldurs gate, you already have set stats based upon your background. Is that how dnd works so it lets you get a sense of when to risk a die roll
DMs most often will deny the chance to make a check usually when success/failure does not have a meaningful outcome (e.g. trying to climb a regular ladder) or reasonably impossible (e.g. asking a king to abdicate his throne out of the blue)
Is there possibly an online game where I could practice playing DnD before joining real sessions? Iām scared š
honestly dude the first campaign is a little scarry at first (i just compleated my first one) but once u get to know the peoplu just go with the flow and have some fun
u could also try oneshots which is just a 1 time adventure wwith a dm and like 4 total players
there should be some dms that host one shots if that could help
also as technically im still a new commer ive only plaayed one class (divination wizard) could anyone reccomend me one?
a class?
yea
it dosnt really matter too me im just looking for something fun
2024
something fun...
but i also like too "meta maance"
yea i come from fps games and i like using the good stuff and things that are a little more powerfull then they should be
ahhh
yes
okay ill give it a try
lmao alright
guess its a good thing i have tcof lol

@wild onyx ive read through some of the manuel, i actually have a serious, and a fun characther wrttine later. but i still need to learn more, we can talk later some time
@wild onyx im just still on the fence if i should roll for random stats, or pick my own
Never roll for ability scores unless your DM says so and is witnessing your rolls (and I wouldn't even then). The Standard Array or Point-Buy methods are the way to go.
(There's enough random chance in the game without a handful of rolls at the start determining your character's mechanical effectiveness for basically ever)
Feel free to pop over to #character-discussion sometime to talk about your idea!
Hi
hi everyone
Hi
hi
Hi
G'day all! Scroll up a little for some links and info on getting started, or check out the #channel-guide to to find your way around the server.
How does one determine the length of a campaign and are you able to search for campaigns that are shorter/longer
Hard to tell, but level range gives some indication. https://adventurelookup.com/adventures is quite useful in getting an overview over multiple campaigns. The information is crowsourced.
May I ask what you mean by level range
Prewritten campaigns cover a certain level range, for which the material is designed.
For example: "this campaign is brings a group of characters from level 1 to 5"
So Iām assuming the lower the capped number, the shorter the campaign will be?
That's a very rough but generally true assumption in my experience, yeah.
Lower levels also take less time to cover.
Going from level 1 to 2 is generally a lot shorter than 8 to 9, for example.
Oh so kind of like any normal leveling system where the XP you gain, becomes much slower the higher you level?
Sort of like that, yeah. But the reason for it taking longer usually has to do with increasing system complexity (more stuff on your character sheet) and story stakes (more bombastic stuff is happening in the campaign that takes longer to resolve).
After all, a significant portion of campaigns/groups don't even use XP to advance, but rather do so when it feels appropriate for the story (for example, you just defeated a major bad guy, you get a level up).
Hey yāall Iām completely new to D&D Iāve watched some YouTube videos but still donāt know how to properly play I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me and if anyone wanted to invite me to a game? I know the basics of how combat works and a few other things here and there.
Okay fair enough Iāll have a read thanks

Let's get back on topic friends
Arriving from #dnd-rules message
@honest mountain, which class and background did you pick?
Rogue solider, with dart proficiency
Ah, there we have the problem. Neither Rogue nor the Soldier background provide darts as starting gear.
They do however provide some money, which you can use to purchase some darts.
Yes, it does
Soldierās Starting Equipment
(A) Spear, Shortbow, 20 Arrows, Gaming Set (same as Proficiency), Healer's Kit, Quiver, Travelerās Clothes, 14 GP
Darts are a weapon, not a gaming set in 5e.
Yeah. For examples of gaming sets, see here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#GamingSetVaries
And here's the dart entry: https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/16-dart
To be honest though, darts (the game) should be a gaming set
If not for the inevitable confusion that would create haha
I mean, beyond let me choose them as a gaming set proficiency, and it says I have them. Just 0 of them
Yes, but it shouldn't be usable as a weapon.
Beyond does have its share of glitches, which are not RAW.
Your starting equipment doesn't give you darts. Ask your GM if you can customise your starting equipment or if you can buy them out of session.
I reproduced this, there is indeed a "Darts" that can be selected, though I can't find where DDB got this from. It's neither in the 2014 nor the 2024 rules as far as I can see.
Itās from ālord of the rings roleplayingā
Thatās probably the issue
Ah, yep, that'll do it
This is third party material that is somehow accessible even if you have no partnered content enabled.
Is the forge domain cleric kind of like a cleric artificer combination?
It predates the artificer in 5e, but there's definitely some flavor overlap.
Alrighty, thanks!
Good
Sehr gut
hiiiii!
I am sooo glad to hear that
what ?
Iām new lol I want to learn how to play dnd and yeah!
Check out #learn-to-play and #find-a-game
Hello!
Thank you
wait those links r super helpful for me too, lmao thanksssss
Nice pfp btw :3
aww ty!
Mhm!
There are GM postings over at #looking-for-players that you can go over as well
It's my first time trying to get into dnd, is there anything in particular that I should do or something?
Hi guys
Reading the free Basic Rules and practicing creating a character is a good start
Is there like a mold to make my character or can I just free ball it?
There are rules to character creation, see the Basic Rules. D&D Beyond has a character creator that's easy to use
There's a app for dnd?
D&D Beyond is the official app. There are others too.
Is it free?
Yep you can use it for free
And if yes , where can I find it
Books abt?
You can go to the site. There's also a mobile version
I'm like a newborn in this stuff , I don't know almost anything about dnd
The different (hold on my brain is being difficult)
You can start playing with just the free Basic Rules. However, you can also buy the Player's Handbook and other books for more character creation options
So I'm sorry that I'm so clueless
I suggest you start with the Basic Rules first.
So is there anything else I should know?
Check out #learn-to-play
Are dnd players open to newbies?
Many are
Iām attempting to get back in it again with my kids and starting from scratch again
And the game itself, is it played on a app or something?
Learning the basic rules before joining a table will make it easier for everyone, including your GM
It can be. Some tables don't
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

- [How does it work?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Where do I join?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Frequently Asked Questions](#learn-to-play message)
And said app , is it free?
Yes it's free.
Btw I'm so sorry if my English is a little broken, I'm not native
How much did it take you to learn the basics and get into your first table?
I started as a GM/DM so it took longer for me
And as a player is it simpler?
If you're going to be a player, learning the rules shouldn't take too long. Half a day at most
Yes, being a player is simpler
I know there's a map and I know a few classes (idk if y'all call them that)
But apart from that o really have a blank mind
Read the Player section of the Basic Rules. Then if you have questions about the rules, you can ask us here
Thanks dude, imma do it rn
where can i find a DM and learn from this guy
This can give you a start: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
As to finding someone individual to help, you could try raising a post in #looking-for-dm. Check #find-a-game for how that works.
Hey all š
@zealous spade hello
Scroll up a smidge, you'll find the Dyno post with links to the Free Rules, video guides and more!
Hey yall ! Hope everyone is doing well, newbie here ready to give yall some questions induced headaches
Ask away!
Oi
Cool ty
Will be back in a week when I'm done reading all the booksš
Nice to see so much activity here.
If anyone has room DM me. I will be reading up.
Oh nvm no reading I can't afford that right now
Much obliged! Basically i only played like 3-4 sessions so far so not that experienced.
My friend is inviting me to join his ongoing campaign with our other friends, iāll be starting level 14, i need help picking a strong class.
To make it short, iāll join in as a potential traitor, my character somewhere in the future of the campaign will have a choice to stay with the heroes or join the villains (my character will have split personality until a certain point).
So i have been wondering if i should pick something just pure combat or something that can help my team mates but when i get the signal to turn evil i just drop the support for them and shock them etc..
Been looking at circle of blood druid but everyone online says wizards and clerics are op in 5.5
Free Rules are free and have plenty to get you started. Skim the basics, try putting together a starting character for practice. Server's always open for questions.
The basic rules are free. It contains the bare minimum as far as character creation options, but it does have everything you need to actually play the game as far as rules and such goes
Oh that seems tough how do you decide your character before knowing your teamate. But maybe this question is irrelevant. I'm installing app to see character creation. I really appreciate all the comments and feedback already
Don't worry about commentators saying this or that is OP. Go with your heart.
That said, party betrayal can be a contentious topic, and player versus player combat in D&D is not balanced at all like it is against the monsters. Results may vary.
Just for practice? Put together something that catches your interest. A halfing fighter with the acolyte background, a dwarf wizard with the soldier background, whatever combination you feel like.
If I'm being entirely honest with you, this is giving me a couple of red flags. Or at the very least, things you should be cautious about before jumping head first into it.
Firstly, if you're still new to the game and have only played 3-4 sessions, joining a game at level 14 seems like a bad idea. D&D can get very complicated as you level up, and you're skipping all of the gradual build up that helps you learn the ins and outs of your character over time. My fear is that you're going to be absolutely overwhelmed by choice paralysis and complex mechanics before you really get a chance to enjoy the game. I understand that you want to play with your friends, but it would be a better idea to either start a second game where they can play with you at low levels, or you join a different low level campaign for a little while, to give yourself a chance to learn more about the game before you jump to high level play
Secondly, playing as a traitor or doing any sort of PVP in a D&D game is a very bad idea. The game is not designed for PVP, which means it will be imbalanced, create bad game flow, and is generally just considered to be a major taboo. It may genuinely upset your friends IRL if you play as a traitor in their game without their agreement to the idea beforehand, since that's generally considered to be off limits by the normal social contract of the game
Yeah its a unique spot , its still not 100% determined which side iāll be on as my character might feel different when both of his personalities merge.
But will still need a strong class in case i go either against the heroes or the villains.
Any thoughts about druid blood? Or have any class suggestions? No dual classes allowed afaik.
It's from Grim Hallow or UA? Never looked at it, sorry.
What do you think of the features it offers? Would they suit your intended style of play?
I am well aware, i already played an act of a previous campaign from level 5 till 8 iirc.
Honestly me and DM thought it would be fun plot twist (its still not strictly 100% treason as my character will have split personality , decided to be with team of villains before meeting the party and temporarily forgot all that).
So it will slowly unfold in the future.
And i work weekly shifts so unfortunately i cant play a long campaign with them from 0 as my work timings are horrible and i would seriously restrict their playing times
I think Grim hollow as per DnD beyond, on first glance looked cool ngl.
Ok now I'm a little confused. You went from level 5 to level 8 in just 4 sessions?
7 or 8 forgot, DM had to kind of accelerate it a bit since some players couldnt attend anymore due to circumstances
Hmm. Many red flags in this plan.
Generally speaking, the best practice is to find a group to join first, then make your character, for exactly this reason. You can make a character that fits that group and that story. That being said, a lot of people do make their characters ahead of time, because its fun, and it can be good practice for learning the rules. Just be aware that you may need to make changes to the character once you join a group
Mind elaborating ? I am not sure how long he has been a DM but he has been into dnd for a while now.
You mean game mechanisms red flag or issues between players?
So to find group I just keep asking here till someone picks me up like the thread said?
well kinda, you can also host your own game but pretty much
I'm definitely not ready to host
I will keep trying until
Thank you again everyone
no problem!
Split personalities. Betraying the group. Playing a high levels while you're still new. Using unofficial content. These are all some of the most common mistakes and pitfalls that we advise new players avoid doing. Its honestly a pretty good check list of what not to do. If you have absolutely trust in your own abilities to understand the rules and the social dynamics, and you're sure it won't upset anyone else at the table, then it could work. But you're very much walking the razor's edge, where handling anything about this wrong could cause major issues for the game and potentially for your friend group
You arent wrong.
The last campaign i joined there was something along this line but it wasnt 100% treason from one of the players , but it worked fine.
As for player issues we all have known each other for around 10+ years plus and we always chill and meet each other weekly every few days.
Honestly most of us werent into DND its just two of our friends suggested why not to try so we have been winging it so far and been a good laugh.
But im not sure about the game mechanisms im sure im missing alot, thats why im trying to find a class and read up on it as much as i can and iāll ask the dms questions until session starts
The best way to find a game is to cast a wide net. You can respond to some of the LFG posts in this server, or make your own (in the proper channels), but you can also try looking on other discord servers, other websites, local resources, your own friends, etc.
Yikes.
ouch
red flags everywhere
I wish i can join a campaign from scratch but unfortunately i got 3 different shifts that change every week so its just not feasible as most of my friends work 9-5 unlike me
which channel is the proper channel to send a message looking for a group? I joined this server like 5 mins ago and I am v overwhelmed lol
you type /looking, looking for DM, send, fill out form.
Or answer to other lfg posts
Could be, we are all playing pretty casually and unfortunately more often than not we end up missing some players before campaign ends anyway so it always turns out weird
Apply for games at #looking-for-players if you don't want to post your own listing
in a specific channel or anywhere?
anywhere you can type
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
the #find-a-game channel has instructions for how to use the Looking-For channels
Hey guys. I have a question for you about character ideas. I prefer absurd ideas. For example, a wizard ā an old man with dementia and a phobia of perfectly square objects. A centaur rogue with the wizard class who shoots crossbows from the ceiling. What absurd ideas do you have?
okay thanks all!
oh sorry
No worries! There are lots of channels here and lots of folk.
Just to let you know, when I'm talking about the issues that betraying the party can cause IRL, I'm speaking from personal experience. My first D&D character was a lawful good, rule following stick-in-the-mud, but the rest of my party were thieves and criminals. So when my character saw them commit a crime, he reported them to the guard, and got them arrested. I'm still friends with those folks to this day and we all got over it eventually, but there definitely was a few days when they were really upset with me irl.
D&D is supposed to be a collaborative game. That's how the game was designed, and that's how most people expect and want to play the game. Betraying the party is a social taboo because it takes away from that experience.
Oh i get you, dont worry this group we basically meet every other day ( my friends has a guest room and its basically our gaming/meeting room).
And everyone been knowing each other for at least 10+ years.
I mean even outside of dnd its the kind of group always playfully insulting and fighting with each other so its cool from that pov dw š
Betraying the party is fine. Not betraying the party ever is fine.
It's a social game. Decide what you want to be as a party, not just your PCs.
If someone wants to play Boromir that's cool, so long as the table's into it.
I tried to fill lfg got banned because my avatar was black I changed it but now I can't fill it out anymore.
Oh yeah it will definitely be a choice down the line once my characterās story will be revealed.
Dm thought it was an interesting story. I guess if my adventures will go well with them my character will be inclined to not betray and if not he might, even i dont know yet, totally roleplaying it.
As my character has no idea of his split personality until its revealed endgame
Yeah, keep the conversation going between the players, even if the characters know or don't know certain things.
When other players know what you're up to, they can also play into it. Same with the DM.
Yeah exactly why we chose the whole split personality thing, since even if they insight or magic check they cant know because even i dont know (about what happened before meeting them).
So iāll really lean into that, iāll play genuinely as one of them up until the DM reveals everything in the end and there will be a choice.
Now im just sitting trying to check what strong class i should choose, but there are too many content out there feels like studying for a degree š
Good morning people,
Can anyone suggest a good online character builder thatās not dnd beyond?
Iāve got a stack of physical books but nothing digital so my options are always limited when trying to make one on the app. Any suggestions?
Thank you
If you want to use your physical books, then you'll want to use something that is not automated, so that you can simply fill in the character sheet information with whatever you want from your own books. Good options for that would be simple things like a fillable PDF of a character sheet, or a google/excel sheet. I believe Roll20 also has blank, fillable character sheets, but I'm personally not a fan of their UI.
If you want to use D&D beyond with your physical books, you also have the option of using D&D Beyond's homebrew tools to recreate the character options that you want to use as your own "homebrew." Just make sure you don't publish anything you make this way and its perfectly fine as far as TOS is concerned
Hi everyone! I'm new here so thanks for your welcome.
?new
the bot died againnnnn
Welcome to the server. Check the pinned messages for good info to get you started!
Yes. ^^ I just started last week to read everything about the free rules since I played Baldur's Gate 3. I haven't finished it yet.
Sounds like you're well on your way, then!
And sorry for my mistakes, I'm not a native english-speaker.
Yeah, I'm at the beginning of the Act 3 of the game. I felt the need to learn about the original material, so I've started to learn more about D&D. I've never played this kind of game.
On any given day, folks are learning about it for the first time or taking the plunge to understand it more. If you've already begun reading the rules, you're off to a solid start.
Can any1 teach me how to play 2014 DnD? I'm new and My brain isnt exactly braining....
It feels so hard to play with people. None of my friends plays D&D, nor even knows about it, haha. So I feel lonely haha.
Cool! I have already read everything free on D&D website.
That's a pretty big ask. Have you read the rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
We can answer questions rather than trying to walk you through the whole process.
Kk, brb then
I've started to watch some "gameplay" (descent into avernus) to observe how it's played.
Not a bad idea. You could always run a short game to see if they'd be into it. Or you can search to play with folks online using this server's channels. Or see if there's a local gaming scene at a game/hobby store or library.
So while it might feel like there are no options, I don't think that's entirely true!
You seem to be a specialist of the topic. I'm reading your "less-than-complete guide". š
I don't feel to play in a local gaming scene, not right now. I would rather begin on a Discord Server.
About my friends, they finally liked to play Baldur's Gate 3, but it's a totally different matter for this stuff. They just play video games.
Can't force people to do something, but I also don't think it's out of the question to ask friends to try something once for your sake. Anyway, you're absorbing the rules and if you're aware of all the places to look, so I think you'll find a group somehow.
If you have specific questions, do drop 'em here!
I actually have one about a spell. But I don't know if it's applicable for D&D 5e or if it's only for Baldur's Gate 3.
Ask it anyway!
Hey everyone šš»
Welcome welcome.
I want to learn to play because my son wants to learn
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages in this channel!
I need to keep the competitive edge šš I'm joking
||I'm not joking||
Thank you
Sure thing. For a good intro for a younger crowd, check out this adventure: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
Thank you so much
It's about the disguise spell. How does it really work? I've tried to use it on a prisoner in BG3 but the guard recognized the person even if she was disguised in a different race and sex. How?
Disguise Self can be detected. From the spell description (2014):
To discern that you are disguised, a creature can use its action to inspect your appearance and must succeed on an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC.
So in game terms, the guard succeeded on their roll to discover the disguise.
Okay, thanks! So it's just the game doesn't show/explain the mechanic? It was actually the spell "seeming". But what I don't understand is every guard attacked us when they saw her, no matter how many time I reloaded the save. It was like the spell was just a cosmetic change, but nothing more. Thanks.
That's not something we can comment on, really. BG3 is based on D&D, but it doesn't work exactly the same. Why the game does or doesn't do a thing isn't always explainable by D&D's base rules!
Hihi!
So, I now just need to find people to play with. The hard part.
Alas, it is. Good luck. It's nobody's favorite part of the hobby.
Haha, thank you for your help. Have a good night (it's 11:28 pm in France).
Likewise!
Hi new, Iām Nugget
bruhš
That should help
thx
You will not have much luck finding one for kids but itās not impossible. Iād suggest you post what you are looking for in hopes a DM finds you
im sorry, im trying to find this alleged looking for players chat
Hey I'm completely new to D&D and so is my friends. I was elected to be the DM so i was hoping to get some tips. š i am using the online platform.
These are usually run in-person
where do i post looking for playters?
See the Easy to follow instructions in #find-a-game
XD where the voice calls at
Not available through this server.
Hey so Iām playing my first ever campaign, I was planning to do a monk, but my DM said that to make stuff different, in this campaignās world magic is outlawed and Iād probably get executed. So Iām going to be a ranger and am looking for some tips or ideas for what race Iām going to do.
Hey. Rangers get magic too.
And technically what monks do isn't magic, but focus of their inner power through their martial arts practices.
Talk with your DM. Find out what they're intending with this setting and what your options might look like.
So Iām not sure if you or your DM got confused about the classes, but Monks do not have magic, and rangers do. Rangers primarily fight with weapons, but they do get access to some spellcasting. Monks fight through martial arts. Some monk subclasses get magic or other supernatural abilities, but itās not part of the base class.
Because someone who gleefully announces that magic is illegal and carries a death penalty in a game where about 90% of the subclasses have magic and two thirds rely on it to deliver their effectiveness is just daft, or trolling.
It wasnāt my DMs fault it was mine I thought monks were magic
And I might actually instead do a champion fighter, what would be a good race for that?
Wood Elf or any Elf in general is the best in my opinion for ranger.
I like warforged for the AC
Yeah warforged or just your basic human. Or Dragonborn.
Any. Really, species is a secondary choice.
K I just want one with damage strength boosts and decent speed
Or subclass
Hi! New to D&D and I'm wondering, if I want to start playing online, is there still a set of physical materials I should invest in like books, dice, etc, or is pretty much everything available online?? I really don't know where to begin and it's a little overwhelming lol, but I love TTRPGs, have seen a few campaigns on youtube, and I'm excited to try getting into a campaign myself!
When you say ādecentā, do you mean average or slightly above average
Slightly above average
Everything is available online, yeah. You can get digital character sheets, digital dice, digital battle maps, etc
Wait are you playing on 2024 or 2014 rules
Me?
I donāt even know
we just started making our character sheets yesterday
@hearty blaze
To my knowledge Wood Elf is the only 2024 species with 35ft
Is your dm an experienced player or a new dm? Newer players and dm usually go for 2024 rules
Not sure
The only issue is, if itās 2014, you might find it hard to go for a strength based fighter with wood elf
They have +2 to dexterity and +1 to wisdom
Goliath has 35ft
Iām going to see my DM soon tomorrow so Iāll ask him
Goliaths also have 35ft speed
I stand corrected
So if he says 2024 do wood elf @hearty blaze
Alright
Do you prefer the idea of a fast, nimble elf or a 8ft tall mountain guy
Nimble elf
Then yeah
If itās 2014 Iād recommend Goliath for strength builds but dexterity builds are fine too
K
Awesome, thank you! I'll look more into online resources before I start looking for a proper group ^_^
Honestly, I can't wait to join my first campaign - it just seems like so much fun!! I especially love designing characters and backstories and stuff, which is part of why I love TTRPGs lol
Hey,
Is it normal to get contacted by private message for "totally free campain but needing to pay 200$ for a drawing art character"? x)
Common scam
Block them and report to Discord
Iām still tenichally new lmao
A Character I commonly use is this prince who is questioning his own existence and isnāt aware of what life is like outside his castle
Hello still tenichally new lmao, Iām Nugget
Iāve grown attached to him
Nice trope
Thanks, I just did it.
It was too beautiful to get contacted for a campain so fast haha.
Alas, we live in reality. Finding a good table is the final boss of this hobby
When is the healing skill used?
I'm looking into creating a cleric for one of my first characters
how much does a level 1 ability score get like im confussed with making my first DND
Depends
Are you running point buy, standard array or rolled
When someone needs to be healed? Idk what youāre asking.
custom because it only allowed me to that
no pic perms
what is rolled
Wdym
You roll a bunch of d 20s and allocate them to each stat. I donāt love it, but some tables use it.
I prefer point buy
gimme a totaal number i can use im a level one XD most of my stats are custom rn because custom race
Thatās point buy
And also itās a bit more complicated than that
send u a dm
I donāt really have friends into dnd, maybe one⦠Iāll pay if there is some available just really want to find a new hobby, Iāve played baldurs gate 3 with my friend, and when I was institutionalized, I tried homebrewing dnd myself
Sorry I donāt use discord not really sure in the rules if Iām doing something wrong let me know
Nope ur fine
I made a guide (linked in bio) full of places to check out to find others to play games with. Aside from looking here, as Nugget mentioned.
Nicely done
Thanks š
Good luck! Finding a compatible group is one of the biggest hurdles in the hobby, but obviously we think it's worthwhile!
What do you mean linked in bio?
It's linked in my bio. Or just go here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?usp=sharing
Thanks!
Hey I am new to dnd can anyone show me how to make the sheet for my character?
Hey there!! I havenāt played an a long time but I want to get back into D&D! My friend and I are looking for a campaign to join if anyone would have us!!!??
Go to fastcharacter.com. Iād advise opening up multiple D&D windows as well to read up on classes, backgrounds, races, etc
Thanks!
Lols
I nearly made a Tabaxi Monk
I was torn between the two. The āninja turtleā nostalgia won out š
I would've been Tigress from Kung Fu Panda.
Omg put a blue ninja mask on your Tortle Monk, then you'll be Leonardo from TMNT!
Honestly Iād go purple and call it Donnie!!!
Or Orange and call it Mikey.
hi where can i see peoples characters for inspiration
#character-discussion im guessing
hi guys :p
oh mabye lol oops ty
hi!
hellloooooo
i bought the player handbook and the art work looks so beautiful
lucky you
Please don't troll (see server rules)
i think he was saying that the artwork is the main purchase point of the handbook
which i agree, it looks great!
yeah im pretty sure
yes in #dnd-media i can tag you
Okay folks - again please follow server rules.
mb am I the one ur talking to?
sorry undying
For the trolling reminder, yes.
wait huh? is it something i did
Asking for copyrighted materials is again, against server rules
That thing you agreed to to participate here.
oh whoops sorry
oh am i not allowed to send the material inside the book?
Please see the section in the Server Rules about copyrighted content: #rules message
And now back to D&D Newcomers.
Oh okay, i understand now. thank you
If you're new to D&D please check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
does the dungeon master determine when an action is deemed uncertain to use the d20 die or is based off of common sene (for example, making a jump to a broken bridge)
Yes - the DM decides what rules are in effect for the given game context and decides what dice rolls are needed and how to interpret those dice rolls
I can finally join my school's ttrpg club
Nice!
same, my first meeting/session was today
mine will be soon, we gonna make charicters
do you wanna see my character sheet? i posted it in #character-discussion a few hours ago
I also have a campaign that'll start with a few friends online that could happen soon
I made a half-baked charicter for fun
just some practice
ooo cool
@echo kelp i cant see #dnd-media for some reason
well now i can when i press on the #
nvm, i just added it to my channel list
someone mentioned to me that the dm has the power to not allow certain actions from players if it is controversial to the rules or it makes uncomfortable for players. can somoene elaborate on this?
Well ideally the group playing has set expectations and boundaries about appropriate behavior at the table.
The DM may need to enforce that - e.g. one player says they want to attack another player's character. If the group has already decided that's not something they want in their games, the DM can remind the player that they can't do that.
And yes, the DM can simply state that what the player's character attempted to do doesn't work, with no dice rolls.
Or even simply state, "No. That is not permitted at this game."
ah okay, this makese sense. i would assume that its not common for someone to request some weird action that makes the entire table uncomfortable if it is too weird
You would think that but there's plenty of TTRPG horror stories where someone (or even some people as a group) crossed the lines on expectations and boundaries and cuased all sorts of issues, in game and out of game.
But yes, I'd say it probably isn't as common as the horror stories make it out to be
Most folks are there trying to have fun playing a game together, not cause drama.
Whats up
i think i understand where you are going with this. im glad most folks are just trying to have fun. i guess if i feel uncomfortable in any setting, just like in anything, i would just find another group
are there campaigns where the story isnt so dark, like something more adventure like rather than horror?
yes
Yeah there's a good saying here: No D&D is better than bad D&D.
If you see red flags, speak up. And if they aren't addressed to your satisfaction, it's okay to bow out and say, "This isn't for me."
guys is it worth it to buy the physical handbook? i have the d&d beyond app and this app called āSpells 5eā, and im guessing thats enough to get me started but im not sure
thank you for this. its quite comforting to know that im not just sensitive haha (forgot to turn off @ pings sorry)
Physical or digital - (or both) - whatever works for you.
the free basic rules should be fine for a beginner to see if you like the game and whatnot, and most dms will have books you can borrow
is it specifcally named and advertised or would i just have to speak with the dm to get a better understanding of how they are going to tell the story?
most campaign lfg posts should have a general description of the tone, but it cant hurt to ask
The ones that are dark/grim will advertyise as such usually.
But yeah, no problem with asking about it too.
gotcha, thank you both of you. i think i would want a setting more vibrant and adventure like, rather than dark. glad to know i can choose as a preference
hi
-a LOT of people
How would I go about joining a group
check game stores near you? idk, I'm new aswell
Best to ask the GM. Some game descriptions can be very vague.

Gn, donāt let the bed mimic bite!
I buy the physical book only because I like the feel of them in my hands. For actual play, I always use my digital books in Beyond, Foundry, and Fantasy Grounds.
Hey guys,I want to play or join anyone I want to try because I'm a total noob at this
same, I found the #looking-for-players to search, but I don't quite understand "application etiquette "
like, should I have a list of characters to work from? or do I just send a dm?
It can be either. Some players like to prep 1 or more characters to play as, sometimes a DM will want players to wait until the group has formed to make characters.
Usually you'd just respond to the relevant posting saying you're interested. Sometimes you might want to ask questions or add additional info there as well, particularly if information is missing, unclear, or needs player input (e.g. scheduling)
well ive used healing spells beforea and i didnt have to roll for healing, is it a different way of healing in which it is used, other than healing spells?
Every healing spell Iām aware of involves a roll of some kind.
Usually by the caster, but occasionally by the target.
Were you playing a Paladin? Their Lay on Hands feature lets you heal without rolling.
Thatās not technically a spell, though.
Which ones?
There isnāt technically a healing skill either.
A āskillā in D&D relates specifically to ability checks, and thereās a list of skills that exist in the game.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SkillProficiencies
The Medicine skill most closely relates to healing, but it doesnāt give a character the ability to heal on its own.
There's a Healer's Kit too, but iirc it doesn't technically heal
Yeah
So a Wisdom (Medicine) check is most commonly used to stabilize someone whoās dying.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#StabilizingaCharacter
Hey I'm new
A Healerās Kit lets you stabilize them without having to make that ability check.
Where can I post photos of my dog
Itās basically a guaranteed success.
Welcome! You can share a link in #non-dnd-topics.
Just let people know what youāre linking to.
Thanks
The first one has a basic guide, and the second one can help you find a game.
Read through it, and feel free to ask us if you need any help with anything.
Yup
So maybe just learn how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers and combat
Iād recommend learning these basics first, as well as the general gameplay
@dense tiger any questions?
just reading through the resources
Aight
Thanks for the support
I can handle it fine if it means your can sleep tho, sleep is important
If at any time you feel like you can sleep, feel free to dip
Mm
Hello is there a lfg channel or can I ask here?
#find-a-game has all the details on finding a game here
If you donāt find anything in the looking-for channels Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
I dm someone just waiting for a reply im not in a hurry lol
Same, had to eat

If you want to discuss the creation, thematics or function of your character, go to #character-discussion
If you wish to look for a game or would like to know how, please go to #find-a-game
If you want to ask about tips being a dungeon master, go to #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building depending on the question.
I would also recommend checking out #channel-guide if you are confused about what channel is meant for what.
Please remember to adhered to server rules and stay respectful at all times.
If youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.

Thank you very much!
Anything I should add?
Iāll just put that in the chat whenever the chat is slow, or if thereās a lot of newcomers and a not enough people teaching
I can try, but maybe not
And especially not when I need to sleep
Feel free to copy it for yourself though, just please cite me as the original creator
The bot might consider it spam
More so itās just kinda inconvenient for me, especially cuz Iāll have school. Also the bot doesnāt care.
Iāll just slap it here at my own discretion
Exactly - do it at a natural pace and we shouldn't have any issues.
Ye
Does it really matter tho
Also just the spamming of the same thing over and over can still trigger the bot
It's not about the bot - it's about not clogging up chat with the same message over and over which would constitute spam
A moderator has clearly indicated that posting the message in a natural way will not be an issue. Constantly posting it every 30 minutes could be an issue and could be considered and moderated as spam.
We all clear?
Okay moving on. Thanks.
Nah that's fine for now - it was only a brief off-topic tangent.
Aight
same
it rolled a nat 1 I was fine
Phew

Hi everyone!
Iām still pretty new to DMing. Iāve run a few virtual sessions, but I know Iāve got a lot to learn. Iād love to find a mentor (or mentors) to help me understand the fundamentalsāSession Zeroes, pacing, AC, HP, balancing roleplay with mechanics, and running 2024 5e smoothly on VTTs like Foundry/Maps.
Iām here to grow, learn, and connect with others. Thanks so much!
Howdy. Have you seen this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
Welcome #dm-discussion is the place to get help with questions
Look up YouTuber dungeon dudes and sly flourish they have tons of videos to help new DMs
I have not. Thank you so much! Iāll check this out!
Thank you, Iāll check them out! I posted in #dm-discussion last night but got no response, so I tried here. I think it was because I wasnāt asking for anything specific, Iāll do that next time!
Have a glance through the various, take a couple of notes as you like. If you find you have specific questions pop them in #dm-discussion. Folk tend to be more responsive when there's a particular answer to offer.
That makes sense, will do. Thank you so much!
Iām gonna sleep soon so Imma precast customer support:

Good night chat
According to the sidebar at least, there's at least 40,000 people online
We can certainly help!
cool becasue ive been stuck what i call a character creation loop for about a week and half and feel like im going insane
Alright. Have you picked a class, species and background?
yes and no ive generated 11 different classes to fit a certain build but feels like im trying to do everything, im looking to do an int build for an explorer/seeker/sage vibe, does this make sense
however keep landing on warlock and bard for a sword sage theme
oh its in 2024 ver
What do you want to do with Intelligence? Skill proficiencies will do most of the lifting there.
so basically the campign setting is in a mountinous world scarred by war and abberations covered in a blight, the party have a cleric, paladin and druid so far, we playing pathfinder's searching in an old kingdom that no one remembers
Hello, Iām pretty new to this game but happy to be here.
Sure, warlock or bard would work fine. Set your Intelligence to 14, you'll be on target. Bard might get the edge in that they have more skills, but warlock invocations are fun.
aye ive got a build already combat wise works beautifully buthe ability spread for skills is horrifying
githyanki pact of the blade warlock that uses a glaive
Glaive, warlock, and shooting for a 14 intelligence is TOUGH.
I think you might need to be willing to make a concession on one of these three, if you ability scores are giving you trouble.
invo's are pact of the blade, thirsting blade, agonising blast, amour of shadows forgetten the other one, got reiliance at lvl for for boost to con and con saves, need a str score to use glaive cos of heavy, so my stats spread go cha/con/str/dex so int is at 8 and wis at 10 using avg stat array
ive made a roguebard cos of it, fighter bard, fighter rogue, fighter warlock, fighter wizard, rocgue wizard, wizard, just warlock just bard and barbarian cos i was feeling the rage when creating characters
Well, you'll have to nail down a specific choice before you start
And you've rather piled up the requirements: smart, but a Charisma caster, with a heavy weapon and a want to do melee. You'll be spread thin.
How about a spear instead? Then you could drop the Strength.
i noticed a certain synergy with agnising blast and repelling blast can be applied to any attack cantrip so booming blade?
but you right on the money ive gone to wide with my spready thats why ive dialled it back to fresh clean slate
so the theme i got is a seeker and collector of magic and antiques seems very boring i understand just wanted to fit in with theme of the game
The rider won't trigger unless the target chooses to move. Forced movement doesn't apply.
It does set them up to want to move, though, especially if they don't have ranged options
You're kidding. In a world with manticores and liches and dragons? It's hecking dangerous! Also exciting.
Just try dialling back your scope a little. It's going to be very hard to be all things for all seasons.
ill tell you what its nice to talk dnd to people i dont normally get this option in my life
maybe i should forget the archetypes then and just build it in the order in the book? i have feeling rogue with expertise gets better int skills mixing bard with it just 2 levels gets me more expertise in fact if i go 1 level rogue then dip bard for 2 levels gets me 5 skills compared to the 4 if i multiclass the other way, i take bard to 3 for lore bard for more skills, prob pick scribe or charlanatan for skilled orgiin feat 3 more skills if i want more i could just play human and get skilled again
oh and 2 from background plus i have jack of all trades
Maybe jump ahead and plan for the skills you feel you need for your concept? Then you'll know how many is enough.
i did it on that one felt like overkilled it, thinking on it the paladin would be the dmg dealer and tank of the group druid would be control and support erm stars druid i think and the cleric is light
think before i was trying to make a sad build while being skillful tu tu tut shame on me
Can anybody give me some pointers on DnD? I'm a newcomer and would LOVE to learn!
Well the bot didnāt trigger lol. There are basics pinned in this channel to help you out
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started.
But if you've got any specific questions, ask away!
Thank y'all.
This is random, but does anyone have any advice about finding a group to play with? Preferably, one that is online and free to play.
You could start by checking #looking-for-players to see what games are available there.
#learn-to-play and #find-a-game has some additional suggestions.
Nice. Thank you
Is D&D Beyond good to use for people who don't want to pay for stuff?
You have some free options there, but you'll need to pay just like with any other platform if you want the full range.
Thankfully, the free rules have everything you need to play
Like for the PHB?
Nowhere offers the full PHB for free.
The PHB is not free, but like DOSH said, the free rules have the essentials for play.
That's good to know.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
You can find them right here.
The free Basic Rules / SRD includes portions of the PHB, DMG, and MM.
So other sites like Roll 20 will offer the same.
D&D Beyond does have content sharing, though:
?tag ddb contentsharing
Still, it sucks that so many origins are locked behind the PHB
Oh right. Botās down. š
Dyno has been down all morning š
The Master Tier subscription allows a subscriber to enable content sharing for up to 5 campaigns that they are participating in! Each of these campaigns can have up to 12 participants (13 counti...
Basically it lets the whole group share their books with each other.
So if one person in the group had the PHB, everyone could use it when creating their characters.
You can also use the homebrew system for free to create your own species / backgrounds.
(But that's probably something you'd want to discuss with your DM beforehand.)
Hi guys, I am really new to DnD and wanted to ask if it is more likely to find a group if I already know how everything works
I played a oneshot once (but I was really helpless if I am honest) and ofc I also played a lot of BG3, but else I really have no idea how to play.
If I apply as a player or start looking for a DM, would I have better chances at finding people if I already tried to learn as much as I can? Or do people not mind as much to help you along the way?
Certainly the more you know, the more likely you'll be able to find a game.
It's a combination of two things:
- Putting the time and effort into learning prior is a sign that you're committed to playing.
- Inversely, putting the responsibility of teaching you how to play on the DM and the other players can easily be seen as a poor use of everyone's carefully allotted time.
Ahh yes that makes sense, tysm! I will try to learn as much as I can then
Thank you for the fast response!
Are there any websites or maybe Youtube channels you can recommend?
My recommendation is checking out the free Basic Rules for yourself first!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Take a quick overview of the different sections, and only do in depth reads when you want to learn more about that part in particular. That way, if anything gets you stumped or of the text isn't making any sense, you can ask questions here or search up rules explanation videos for that specific thing.
Alright, looks good! I think I will sit down the next days and get to know everything, again thank you so much for the help
I got a last quick question, would it make sense to already have an idea what you wanna play before looking for a DM? I got an idea for one already, but when I scrolled through people looking for players I realized that most of them already have a world setting that they wanna go for. Is it better to think of a character concept once you know in which kind of setting the campaign takes place? Or is it enough to ask your DM if your character would fit into the story without it seeming too senseless?
I think it's good to have multiple character concepts that you're willing to tweak to fit into the setting and game you eventually find yourself in. Broad strokes are good, especially if you're willing to be flexible. Specifics and failure to compromise, less so!
It can also be useful to make a practice character sheet or two. There's no guarantee your DM will let you use that character, but it can help quite a bit to understand how all the different parts of your character fit together.
Gotcha!
Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it!
Feel free to ask here if you have any specific questions while looking over the rules / building character ideas. We'll be happy to help.
hey yall im new to dnd like ive known about the game for a while but only through online skits and reels. i dont have a real knowledge or starting point, can anyone help?
Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules. As you read through them, if you have any specific questions you can ask them here.
so relatable
hows everyone doing this evening?
still got 3 hours of work to go then im free to sleep for tomorrows work š
ive got work tomorrow at 7am š
well built the rogue bard with 17 skills, so thats characters done having a little break, aslong as nobody triggers me into creating another character
sooo if people running games is it in person or online? or a typical baldurs gate 3 playthrough?
I suspect the vast majority of posts searching for games/players on this server are for online games.
IKR its kind of annoying
Like im looking for a party to join and all of them are either in crazy timezones or text based
And idk ive tried playing text based before but i wanna actually talk to people you know?
Are you hoping to land an in-person game, or are you open to online?
Im open to online i just want it to be on call not by text
If you look at the looking for players channel half of them are text based
I know im not gonna find an in person group i live in europe this server is primarily american i think
But like duuude text based takes half the fun out of d&d for me
Maybe expand your search? This isn't the only place to look for games.
so with cure wounds for example, (if i have prof in that skill) im able to roll the d8 a second time to try and get a higher number?
That isn't how proficiency works, or even advantage.
By default, the only thing proficiency in a skill ever does is let you add your proficiency bonus to an ability check made using that skill.
So proficiency in Medicine would let you add your proficiency bonus when you make a Wisdom (Medicine) check.
Since Cure Wounds doesnāt involve an ability check of any kind, your skill proficiencies are irrelevant.
If you wanted to reroll your dice for Cure Wounds, you would need a rule that explicitly says you can.
i see, thank you
The Healer feat, for example:
Healing Rerolls. Whenever you roll a die to determine the number of Hit Points you restore with a spell or with this featās Battle Medic benefit, you can reroll the die if it rolls a 1, and you must use the new roll.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats/1789152-healer
okay,
i actually find that 99% of them are VC, we just got a few text ones today
Hello
hi!
Welcome.
Ah thats good to hear! I just joined and i was real worried about it
Hello would anyone mind explain the rules of dnd to me please i read the essentials kit rulebook but i still dont get itbif you would want to explain the rules to me then dm please
Hi
we can answer questions here, but DMing you all info is a bit weird
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
The free Basic Rules has everything you'll need to play. As opposed to messaging you directly, feel free to read through and ask specific questions here whenever you get stuck on something you don't quite understand.
Thanks but I can likek tomorrow
Hey
Hi.. I also just got D&D toooo, I kinda know the surface level of it⦠but i literally have Zero people around me who knows the game.. I got one of my friends into it kinda.. but ironically it lies heavy on me and I have no clue what to do even though I like to (and did) jump into session.. though I technically only did one.. I did the Peril in Pinebrook and I kinda loved it.. if I had someone to kinda share the same enthusiasm and attention to it as meā¦. Well not exactly as me because Iām tryna figure out how to make my own campaign even though Iām still figuring the details of rules⦠But I mainly just joined this server to see id I can find some D&D friends and learn more on my way
In a way I could be conciderd new to, I've played it before but I've never been able to finish a campaign me and a couple of friends started and I've been dying to find a few friends who are into it and maybe end up in a campaign myself
It honstley sounds extremely fun
Wellll, I never really even actually started a full campaign. The Peril in Pinebrook I think thatās considered a one shot.: but I am also very interested in campaignssss. The idea of it sounds amazing and watching videos of others seems fun tooā¦. Kinda how Iām already trying dive in if tryna figure out how to make my ownā¦. Tbh I think thatās probably why i know a little bit of enough to not be clueless cause I keep going back to skim the rule book kinda on if I even have an decent idea
Three simple adventures linked with a story threaded through them is a campaign. Here's an example of what that might look like as a summary: #dm-discussion message
Get the characters involved in a tricky situation in an interesting location then as the party approach a possible solution reveal an unwelcome complication.
Thankss!
Hey guys! Iāve never played a wizard necromancer before. As a school of necromancy wizard. Am I only allowed to cast from necromancy spell list
Well your class and subclass features will note what you can or can not do mechanically.
Do any of those say "you may only cast from the necromatic school of magic"?
Howdy the names shuriken and Iāve heard a lot about D&D and got curious about it and I want to learn more about this game (is it a game?) it seems really fun to be honest
It is a game! You can check out the rules a few messages up (#dnd-newcomers message) and #learn-to-play to get yourself acquainted.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Nice, the bot's working again!
I was trying to get them work yesterday and was so confused
Mabe we could play tgr at some point in the future
That sounds pretty cool tbh
@outer raven look at the bot post above or iamrazorwings lfg doc for where to find games, dont advertise here
as for you, are you a DM? if yes, try posting in #looking-for-players
What does tgr stands forthoo?
together
I'm not currently looking for a campaign right now im just tryna find friends with a general interest and getting into a campaign later on
Well you just made a new potential friend then
Hey folks! Please use the Looking For Game channels for any game soliciting/organizing - it's off-topic outside of those channels. See #find-a-game to learn how to use those channels.
Ok ye I think Iām gonna have a lot of fun here
Hey, everyone! I'm brand new to this so if anyone can help me find a campaign that's later in the evening, that'd be cool!
Read through #looking-for-players, #looking-for-community, or #paid-looking-for-game to see if anything fits your schedule. Or post an ad yourself in #looking-for-dm (follow the info in #find-a-game)!
as undying said above, dont post here but try the #find-a-game !!! Succes with finding a game!
Just checking, are you familiar with the rules yet? Iād recommend learning the basics first.
thats a good part actually, i need to remember this is the newcomers channel
Still Iād check out #learn-to-play
?tag new bg3
?new bg3
If youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And of course, if you have any specific questions, please ask away! This channel is meant for it, and there are plenty of great people who should be willing to help you.
i noticed
I thought this was a place to show characters no?
Baulder's Gate 3 is heavily inspired by D&D 5e, so that's a great start. Just remember, that game made a significant number of changes to the rules to make it better fit as a video game. So don't just automatically assume you know how something works just because you know how it works in BG3. Look at the rules with a fresh perspective, but you can use BG3 to reinforce your understanding and give you a frame of reference for how certain things might work in actual play
This is the D&D Newcomers channel where we help folks get started with the core game rules and mechanics.
While we can do some character chatter, #character-discussion is the best spot for that.
See id:browse and #channel-guide to see our many channels for specific D&D topics
oh, OK. And yes, I am a new player however, looking for a campaign obviously, and I have put an advertisement with the boss. What I was wondering though⦠Is there an option for an unpaid game?
Yes
Yes - many games are unpaid. You can scan through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community to see DMs and other servers advertising their games
Yeah. Within this server paid games should be sectioned off into #paid-looking-for-game . Everything else should be free.
Wow you two have a helluva better answer
If you do see anyone advertising a paid game outside of #paid-looking-for-game, right-click/long-press their post and select Apps -> Alert Mods and we can look into it.
OK, thank you both! Yeah, it's a little confusing when it says paid, but there's no unpaid version⦠I also tried to put looking for community but was flagged there as well
Oh well #looking-for-community is where D&D community servers invite players and DMs to join
not really sure what y'all want me to put when I'm just looking for a groupā¦
yeah, somebody flagged me here and I'm really confused
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
You can direct message the users posting in #looking-for-players or use the thread attached to their post to communicate interest.
Thanks Mr Smith!
very detailed and very nice! Yeah, I tried looking for DM as I thought that would probably be the best answer as I'm looking to form a group with people, but not confident with yelling yet. I've tried all the other options but so many look for paid games and I don't have money. It's hard being unemployed. I will try to scan the posts as much as I can.
*Sorry I meant to say I'm not confident with DMing yet
Completely understandable, most players start out as, well, players and not dms. Though some certainly do dm as their first interaction with the gameplay.
it seems like a lot of fun and I've seen a lot of books on it and guidance, but I have no experience so I don't think that's a good idea and I would love to do it and buy stuff to set myself up for it but again unemployment is really not fun, especially with SSDI man can be rough
thank you for your redirection. Apologies for putting this in the wrong channel.
one more question though I'm looking for community do you have to create your own discord server?
Nope, you can also join one

I cast wet socks
