Basically if your fantasy is playing all the big monsters and having power, you'd probably enjoy the role of the DM
As a DM you get to control the world, and any monster you choose, basically
Tbh, the Tarrasque isn't even that interesting of a monster, nor the most powerful
Really?
Yeah, pretty much a big pile of health and damage. Only interesting part is reflecting certain spells
Your cousin should ask to be a demilich instead
What’s a demilich
I think the main takeway is probably: those are strong monsters and are not appropriate in any way to play as a playable character. 😅
It’s Godzilla but without the atomic breath.
no but it is big strong and wrecks havok on an unbiased whim
i have a mate whos PC has a pet chicken which is actually a polymorphed tarrasque
helloo
i want to start playing dnd but ive never done so before
i know basically nothing

Tbh BG3 is a little different but most of it is the same for me
You’re amazing
I’ve also watched some YouTube one-shots so I think I have an idea of how things work but no actual experience yet 💪
To be clear, BG3, while inspired by and using many elements of D&D 5th Edition, is a video game and obviously there’s differences. But it definitely succeeds in carrying the vibe of D&D play
But also check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules
I’m so sorry for hijacking 😭
hi its finenen
tell him to be the dm if he wants to play the tarrasque. a tarrasque is a monster you would put up against 4-6 extremely powerful adventurers, not something you would play. a level one (the typical starting point) party would get annihilated by a tarrasque so having one in a party is a drastically bad idea. the party would never reach the same power unless this campaign is going way past level 20 and it wouldnt be fun for everyone else bc the guy playing the tarrasque would constantly be carrying the team. and if theyre toxic itd be even worse, probably be complaining abt how they’re always carrying etc etc
Hi all! Very new to D&D but just recently had my first one shot a couple few weeks ago and I have been hooked ever since and have fallen so deep into the rabbit hole. Super excited to continue learning more and hopefully get into recurring games.

Sankyuu
so uh.. can I swear while doing my storytelling
or do I have to stick to a kinda focused tone while doing it
That would be a discussion for your group about appropriate player/DM behavior and expectations
Brennan lee mulligan doesn’t
ok thanks
I'll try to copy his way of delivery but his mannerisms will be hard
I'd encourage you to find your own style of DM-ing over purely trying to emulate another DM. It's fine to take inspiration but a carbon copy might feel inauthentic
There's nothing about the game that prevents you from using whatever language you want. Similar to what UndyingNoob said if you feel like cursing might be an issue with your table or already is it's worth a discussion with your group to come to a resolution
Oh I have a question on DMing if you don’t mind.
What if you decide your DnD session you don’t want it to have creatures from the book? Maybe instead you create your own creatures, your own worlds.
Can you do that? Or is DnD mainly strict towards things in a mythical medieval like theme
You can 100% make up your own creatures
Creating custom things, part of "homebrewing" is absolutely something you can do. This includes creatures. For newer players I don't necessarily recommend it since you might not be familiar with what makes a monster particularly strong/weak/functional/unique/etc. As a middle ground I recommend taking a look at a monster whose mechanics evoke what you want to have in a given encounter, then reflavor it (change the aesthetic/narrative without changing mechanics).
Yeah I’d probably have to learn how each monster functions
Settings can also technically be whatever you want. D&D isn't boxed into being "medieval" and in fact it's fairly hard to narrow down a time period equivalent since even the Forgotten Realms setting has elements ranging from prehistory to renaissance and more. Instead of appealing to a certain time period, D&D appeals to certain genres of fantasy- overall heroic fantasy, with its various official settings specifying it further (e.g. FR = high fantasy, Eberron = noir fantasy, Greyhawk = sword & sorcery).
However, it is important to keep in mind that the further you stray away in your setting's theming the harder its going to be for 5e to satisfy compared to other TTRPGs more dedicated to the desired genre. For example 5e won't be as readily accomodating of Space Opera, Cyberpunk, Lovecraftian Horror, Superhero, Low Magic, etc.
But also, 100% you can just sorta wing it with monster creation for low-CR monsters if all you have are an understanding of how stat blocks work and an idea of what an average person’s stats would look like
Depends on your group.
The 2014 DMG has guidelines on monster creation and world building
As a first time player what should I focus on for my character?
Both in creation and while playing?
Ask your GM for any character parameters first
I don't recommend creating a character before finding a group
Oh okay, thankyou
Your GM will usually tell you about the kind of game they're running, and that will inform your character creation process
hi, anyone know where I could find a new table to play with?
It’s less that but now what’s acceptible for the cr your going for
Looking for some players. New to doing. Could do anime inspired or something like zombies if anyone’s down
Looking to set up specific days and do some voices games. Looking for a few hours on specific days
If willing let me know
I believe there's a channel here for GMs looking for players
I'm new to this and only played dnd 1. What are some good tools to use for a dm? I'm using Roll20 and I'm making a homebrew pirate-themed campaign.
D&D Beyond is nice because of how ubiquitous it is, but you don't really need tools if you're new
Pen and paper will suffice
Roll20 is honestly pretty dated for a VTT. Better options are Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, Owlbear, etc
Beyond also has a rudimentary VTT that works well enough
The players I have can't travel. I'm using Beyond as well.

@deep sable Taje a look ^
How does one make a character
And can I use the same character in a different DND game
Class, background and species with some choices made from lists and some of your own ideas.
Why thank you
Generally you'd have a different character for each ongoing game (campaign) that you play in, but #1365381263845752936 games are designed to take the same character from table to table. Terms and conditions apply.
That is alot to take in
Start off with the class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Have a look at the options, pick one.
Could we pm
That would make it much easier for me

hi! i have never played dnd before and wanna ask, when do i build a character? do i do it before i even look for a group, after i get a group, orrr? what do you guys usually do?
See the info above for a great start. Many folks will build a character or two for practice whilst they look for a group to join. That way you have learned a little. Many DMs will then work with you to tweak that to fit their game or help you build one for their group
ahh i see. i'm building a character right now while reading up on classes and species, i'll carry on doing that for now then. thanks a lot!
if you need any help let us know!
will do, thank you!
Making my character on D&D Beyond now, why can't I choose the hermit background for my cleric character?
My guess is the hermit isn't part of the free rules.
Hi! In general, how quick/responsive is D&D Beyond to help requests? I just joined last week and already managed to mess up my account access. I submitted a ticket. Definite user error. 😒
#ddb-support may be worth posting in. You might get a very quick answer!
Oh! Didn't realize that was a channel. I'll try there - thanks a ton!
There's many source that said you can't take skill expertise more than once and also that you can take it more than once
So what is it actually for clarification?
If it can be taken more than once, does Prodigy feat be taken more than once too?
To clarify, you're referring to Skill Expert the feat? And do you mean 2014 or 2024 rules?
In either ruleset, you can only take a feat once unless it specifies otherwise.
Hey im new to dnd and i only have the starter Set and im still larnig how to play. How can i become a beter playere, and im deaply sorry If i made gramatical mistakes im Romania and i write bad
It's hard to give general advice on being a good player since tables vary. That said, I like players who are invested in the game and try to make everyone's fun a priority (not just their own), who are open and willing to communicate about their preferences and solving problems when they arise in the group, and who work with the party to complete the adventure and with the other players to share the spotlight.
I'm sure there's more, but that's a start. Some of that comes with experience, but other parts come down to being mindful of what you say and how.
Thenkes for teling me
Hey there, im new and have only ever played informal campaigns. How do i make a character? I have an idea for a good theif, where i follow actual criminals and steal and return the things THEY steal. someone please help me. (i can voice chat if nessicary)
Any tips for a new DM?
I've played many games before trying as a DM but I've always loved creating my character more than anything and one day decided to make a campaign. Well now I'm super deep into making a monster hunting campaign but would like some tips before I try getting some people to play it! Make sure I've got on the necessities.
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
no sorry, im just as new as you are, but i would love to play your campaign lol
See the bot posts above!

Happy to answer questions when you get stuck!
how do i calculate stats? smth about rolling 4 dice?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
nvm
For your first practice character, I recommend using Standard Array described above.
ive played a campaign b4, it was just informal
its not a practice characcter neither
its 4 my friends campagn
Then you should ask them how they want you to generate stats. Most DMs will want to witness rolled stats.
Hello, new to DnD, known of it for a while but never had a group to be able to play, but tho idk how id like to make the lore/world of my light novel a DnD setting for a future campaign(s), been writing it for 17 years and tho the book might never be published id like to make it a DnD story/world, how do i go about doing this?
That feels more like a #dm-discussion/ #dm-world-building matter.
It’s pretty easy to convert if you have enough worldbuilding notes. Just be aware that players will probably affect the world in unpredictable ways if you wanted the novel and campaign to be in continuity with each other for some reason.
good to know, thank you, i dont even know the rules or how to play DnD hence why i asked in here, id like to do it some day once i learn
The basic rules are free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
There are some assumptions in D&D that may not align well with your world, so you have to decide where (or if) you're willing to make compromises.
How science fantasy is it?
See, that does pose a problem since D&D is largely fantasy (and a particular kind of fantasy) at heart.
Not impossible, just trickier.
But didn't DND release some space themed classes or races a while back
Sure, but that doesn't make it a sci-fi game, especially since there are different flavors of SF.
so think space elves empire, tho its set on 1 world(not earth) 1% of the population has powers, there is a neighboring nation (Ram Protectorate i.e. ram humanoid people) etc,etc there is advanced tech but tanks, ships, guns are rare and mostly sword, physical shields and the 1% of people that use powers(magic)
Spelljammer is less science fantasy and more regular fantasy in space.
The lack of magic might be an issue. Rest can reasonably work.
Ah that's it! Spelljammer
think more final fantasy-esk then true sci fi
D&D assumes a lot of magic.
so it might not be called magic to them its legit like anime powers, yet still elemental
sp yes dont worry fire ball exists 😛
idk ill change it up if need be still working on it
need to learn the game first, then ill work on it more
if i can be but can change stuff if needed
i dont plan to become a DM tho, i rather just be a player
also is arcane tech a thing in DnD?
Depends on the setting. D&D isn't a single setting but a multitude of them.
could switch out the sci fi bit and call it arcane tech
I sure you could DND I find to be a bit flexible
yep, just want it to fit rules so brainstorming
Might be worth moving this to #dm-world-building at this point.
Star wars
More like Flash Gordon.
Or Treasure Planet

Hello
How does a campaign start?
A group of folks get together and someone takes on the responsibilities of being the Dungeon Master who guides the story of the campaign and the others create characters to play in that campaign.
Together they play D&D and collaboratively tell a story through the game mechanics and roleplay of the D&D ttrpg game system
Are you a dungeon master?
Yes and a player.
If you are looking for a game, check out #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
Thx 🙂
is there any stress free/drama free groups helping out new players atm? i wish to get into DnD as a player for a bit and have fun, make a character etc, but i cant be in a group that has drama issues do to my bad health and Social anxiety etc, so idk how to approach this...
There aren't any specified and "official" groups for helping new people, and I don't think any group would advertise if they had any drama going on, so it can be a hit and miss, but overall most groups in my experience tend to be pretty chill, and I have yet to come across anything in 4 years of playing that would end up in any ttrpg horror stories
Also you can check out instructions in #find-a-game if you're looking for a group
good to here, been rough for years just surfing the web and a lot of hatful people on it i try to avoid, glad DnD is the 1 thing thats tamed (i hope)
ive looked at about 15 now, none look new player friendly :/
half of them i have zero idea what there talking about
i just want to add that Im here to learn and enjoy roleplaying, not to be a burden. I know it can be tough for groups to take on new players, but for me the whole point of D&D is inspiring and i love story building, i love fantasy as much as sci fi but atm i rather just join a group but ive looked and looked and idk if half or any that i saw are new player friendly.
but its almost 12am so ill wait hopfully someone gets back to me on this i wish to join DnD its been a year of struggle to fine a new player friendly group
I hope to write more tbh
@lyric fjord I just PM you
Do you mean they specifically mention no new players, or just that they don't mention if the group is beginner friendly or not?
Because in latter case it doesn't hurt to ask, and many groups have no issues taking on beginners goven they are actually interested
it was not specified is all, so cant tell if they allow new players, ill ask around tomorrow and answer FDM then need eep
I'm a newbie looking to join a one-shot. It's been maybe 8 or 9 years since I have played and I want to dust off my chops before committing myself to a campaign. Is it better to have a character prepared before asking to join or should I wait for my group before creating one?
I'm interested to trying learning more ab dnd
i can help with that (again), how did your character sheet go?
Good
ok, what do you need help with?
All I need is a name
for your character?
Yes
Teildri Saurwalker? Or maybe Nivi Rumbleshine?
I like nivi
Hmm
How compatible is D&D2024 with older 5e stuff? Like can I take any book made for 5e and use without any conversion, even third party stuff?
It's very compatible. The numbers (DCs, CRs, Levels) are the same in 2024. The 2024 Monster Manual has a conversion guide for 2014 monsters too, in those instances where the statblocks changed.
As for third party, that's hard to say. Some third party products are well made, others have questionable balancing.
You're probably better off starting with official material and then selectively picking the third party you like.
subclasses need to be changed a bit (everything before lvl 3 is lvl 3) but that’s about it
Is it mainly a balancing issue?
I'd separate it into 3 parts:
- Balancing (the numbers don't line up with official material)
- Theming (the theme might not fit to the fantasy that 5e typically goes for)
- Misapplied / misunderstood mechanics - where the people making the third party missed some detail that will throw up questions that can't be answered by RAW
Mind you, none of these are perfect in official material either, but less prevalent.
Because if I get D&D I'm doing it for all the cool third party stuff. So I'm thinking which version I should try and get my hands on
I've heard good things about Grim Hollow. But people in #third-party are most likely to be able to make suggestions.
If D&D24 is backwards compatible with 5e stuff then that is more future proof as everything new will be for D&D24 and won't work as easily with 5e
Grim hollow is one of them
At the moment, a lot of third party (even stuff that has just released) still uses the 2014 rules (SRD 5.1), because there hasn't been a lot of time to make stuff specifically for 2024 (the SRD 5.2.x released only a couple of months ago).
Though as you said, it's still compatible. Just something to keep in mind.
How much of a hassle is it to fix subclasses to work with D&D24?
Very little. You simply move the subclass features below level 3 to level 3 and the rest is as normal.
I saw some review which said some subclasses depend on class features that got changed/removed in D&D24
Oh. I woudn't actually know of an example there.
okay atleast it's not common then
i believe it’s song of rest for bard, but you can just say i have that now
The spells and stuff is also compatible right? you can just grab the old stuff instead
yes, exactly
Checked to make sure, no official subclasses highlight/modify Song of Rest so they should all be perfectly compatible with 2024
Though it's important to note is that the rules do say that you should use one or the other core ruleset. If there is a newer version of something, use that.
If you start mixing the two base rulesets (so 5.1 and 5.2), you'll need to start juggling exceptions and individual rulings.
The advice is to use 2024 and any stuff from 2014 that hasn't been updated.
A'ight, I might actually look into getting D&D24 then. I feel like I'm the only one who has never played D&D. Closest thing I've played is pathfinder 1e but I don't know if that counts
How ingrained is the vibes in D&D24? I'm not really a fan of kitchen sink high fantasy.
Heroic fantasy is fairly strongly ingrained. You'll quickly find yourself homebrewing if you want to do something else with it.
Heroes have many tools and those tools are often powerful. A level 1 character is already a lot more skilled than your average commoner.
Hi I'm kinda new here how do I find a group to play with

Welcome! Check out the above
Pathfinder 1e is probably closest to D&D 3.5e, but 3.5e is quite distant from D&D 5e. Some basic conventions might carry over (roll a d20, saves, skill checks), but the numbers are completely different.
I don't mind heroic, but the whole kitchen sink, anything goes.
I guess if anything goes it's easy to just restrict races to make it feel more grounded
If that's even needed. I don't know how way out there and wild it actually is
I think that only emerges once you start pulling in all of the supplements and especially third party.
I'd start with the Player's Handbook. It's heroic, but a specific flavor of heroic. Not anything goes by any means.
Is there an included setting or do you have to make you own?
2014 focused on the Forgotten Realms Setting. It's still somewhat of a focus now, since we're going to get 2024 Forgotten Realms supplements soon.
I've seen people talk about greyhawk but is that setting information included in the core books?
The 2024 DMG has Greyhawk as the main included setting, yeah.
There are many others as well, such as Dragonlance, Spelljammer, Planescape and the Magic The Gathering settings like Theros, Strixhaven and Ravnica.
Though those are supplement books.
I'm planning to get at least Ravnica and Grim hollow if I invest in D&D. But alright then I don't have to care about homebrewing a setting even if I get just the core rulebooks
maybe Ravenloft
Yeah, that's the nice thing about D&D. Plenty of info to be found about settings.
i'm in the same situation here! if you find a new player friendly group, i'm joining in with you!
Hey new to the server but anyone know where I need to post to ask if someonenis willing to DM for a group?
Me and 4 other night shifters / night owls are hopingnto find someone willing to DM a biweekly late night (EST)saturday game
i have a westmarch campaign, we are not beginner-friendly bcz of sci-fi spaceship mechanics, BUT i can just do that for you and for the rest we are actually very beginner friendly!
same fo you
Hey there, please use the server lfg system: #find-a-game
Thanks for letting me know
Sorry I left the server. Brain exploded cus of spaceship mechanics
Have a question guys foundry vtt + touch vtt. Does it make it usable for mobiles/tablets?
again, i can do that for you
Thanks. Don't think I will join. Cus I'm still kinda frazzled in my thoughts
ok, fair enough, at least thank you for trying it out
hello
Hey sorry
what's happening? XD
I don't think so
I've been joining too many dnd servers lately and they feel a little overwhelming is all
Every server has like a hundred channels
Oh, that is understandeable. I'm moderating the stuff I see heavily to not get too overstimulated.
Making use of the mute functionality is essential after a certain amount of servers.
Agreed, every few minutes you get a ping for something
nice ill wait for FDM to be awake ill get back to you on the DM

contact ddb
And how do I do that exactly?
Did you buy a sourcebook for 2014 or 2024, and are you using that same year's rules for the character? First thing that comes to mind, though I don't use Beyond myself
Also #ddb-support might be more help, and the appropriate channel for this
hey everyone
hello
hey there Luuik
Hi
are we allowed to share our Characters PDFs for help here?
#character-discussion would be the place for that!
Do I have to buy and play with real dice or could I google online dice to roll?
online
Yeah, digital dice are freely available. Your table will probably weigh in on whether the expectation is physical or digital, though.
Gotcha. When I looked at joining the server it looked like there were probably 7 different types of dnd. What’s the main one a beginner should play? Or if there is a difference or anything like that
5e's two editions, 2014 and 2024 are the current ones (and only ones on topic for the server outside of #dnd-elder-editions , and are ones recommended for beginners
I really wanna get into dnd but ive got a long list of reasons it hasn't happened yet
Hey everyone! I’m brand-spanking new to DnD. Literally, my only experience is seeing memes of it and reels on instagram, but it looks like something I would absolutely love to make time for. Got a four day weekend coming up and would love to see if I can get started somehow. Any vets with advice on how to get started? :3

Thank you lots! :D
@olive flicker hello….
I have a largeish collection of dnd books from like 2-3 years ago. Is 5e particularly outdated right now?
No
It’s still up to date. There have been changes in the past year and to me those feel like 5.5 but 5e is still the most common
Last year they released an updated version of the core rulebooks - the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual.
Officially, it's still fifth edition.
5e is still the current edition.
And should broadly work with any other fifth edition books you already have.
havent heard back from any DM teaching new members atm so for now ill just go video gaming 🙂
Is this a good place to ask questions about dming?
#dm-discussion or #dm-world-building tend to be better, depending on the topic
Though if it's something very basic, here can work too
Is it a bad idea to control two players characters at once? One of our players can't make our next session and we're not sure what to do.
Generally, yes
It's also bad form to use another player's character.
They gave us permission but we're not sure how to approach it since we're in the middle of a dungeon.
Are you the GM? This is the GM's call
No I'm not. We're all jind of new.
There are ways for a GM to still run a game with a player missing for a session.
It's also possible that the GM will just refuse to run that session if there are not enough players. Ask them.
DM might say they just shadow the party and do nothing, risk nothing until the player returns. Or the player might hand over tactical control to someone else. Or another alternative.
Thank you.
The GM might also rule that the character went elsewhere, and they'll reinsert the PC later
In any case, let your GM handle it
You can ask here if you're a very new GM
Okay thank you, I'll mention these to him because it's his first time DMing and he's unsure himself.
This is our first game and we've worked through a few hiccups. Thank Mystra for the internet and discord:p
hi ^^
Welcome
Hello
Hihi
Hello
hey there
I was wondering, how do you usually look for DnD groups ?
I just moved in a city (grenoble, france) and figured it was a decent opportunity to join a DnD group
If youre looking for online #looking-for-players or #paid-looking-for-game
If youre interested in in person dnd local gamestores are often your best bet
it's for physical groups, I'll go ask around local gamestores, thanks
And if that doesnt work you can always try and scramble some friends together and start your own party
well first I'll have to find some that are interested in it
which may be a challenge in itself
Put on your very best dnd pitch and roll a nat 20 on persuasion
I'm newer to DND and I wanted to pick myself up a copy of a PHB and Monster Manual but I'm not sure which ones to get
Get the 2024 versions
Im a player in my first campaign and we use the 2014 edition as we started before the 2024 handbook was released but I don't know which one is better for the long run
Also if you're not planning to GM then you don't need the Monster Manual
Unless you wanna memorise all monsters like its an exam and metagame at every oppertunity
2024 is better in the long run because future books will use the revised rules.
I was thinking about it at some point
Makes sense
can anybody tell me on what websites i can buy DnD Dice and stuff
Not recommendations, but:
- the Dice Shop Online
- Amazon
- Zatu Games
- Element Games
Etc. Have a search, check for suppliers near you.
thanks
Probably see way too many messages of this nature and for that I am already apologetic >.<
I'm a n00b and was hoping to find a group to learn from/with. However the LFG channels don't allow me to post anything. What steps do I need to take to be able to post in those channels?
How can i get into dnd as someone whose never played before? Seems difficult to find the exact group that fits what i need and will accept a player like me

Understood. Thank you!
is dice, dice trays, dm screen and the player handbook all the dm needs
including printed player sheets
You don't even technically need the screen or the trays tbh
Dice Trays and a DM screen are optional. And the you could potentially use the free basic rules instead of the players handbook, if you were ok with having less player character options. You can actually play D&D without purchasing anything if you really wanted to
ok
dwarven battle mage looking for a game any level is fine
So if i do a looking for DM post, will that just be DMs or will does it have groups looking for new players?
If you make a post in the #looking-for-dm channel, then that means you are trying to find a DM, so DMs that want new players will reach out to you
Cool thanks

I'm also new to DND, I've been interested in it for a long time now but I was too shy to start playing
You only need the Basic rules to start. Everything else is nice to have.

Hi there, I’m relatively new to DnD. I love the lore, the artwork and just everything about it. I’ve tried to run Lost Mines for a group of friends but we got stuck role playing for about two hours and just never picked it up again. Anyway, looking for a casual, consistent group to maybe join!
Also new to dnd here, I’ve watched some campaigns on YouTube, and created one character but that’s as far as I know. Looking to play my first campaign

Not sure where to put this but i have a question about the difference between looking-for-players vs looking-for-community because my looking-for-players post got flagged as looking-for-community and taken down?
Basically looking-for-players would be for a single game or campaign, while looking-for-community is for things like servers, westmarches or other more community focused things
So likely either your post would fit there better, or you worded your post in a way that made it very unclear about which one it would belong. You could check by asking in #moderator-support if you wanna be sure, or feel like it was a mistake
Hey im in the same boat if you wanna try to join a dm 👍

How should I do my prayers, I’m new when it comes to rp and just joined a heavy rp campaign, and wanna try to roleplay a prayer, yet have no idea how to do it
Hey, so I just finished my 4th palythough of BG3 and I wanted to start playing DnD for real. Any tips on how to find a group or how to meet people of whom would be interested in helping me start my journey?
Just say what your character does narratively. You don't need to actually act it out unless you want to.
There's also #looking-for-players
Okay, thank you for the help
I just posted on looking for dm. But things changed since I found two other guys that want to join. Is there any way I can change the details on my post?
You can't edit your post, but you should be able to put addendums in the thread for it
I see thx
Hey yall. Ive been in two campaigns for quite a few number of months now. I did join one late, so one is about to end most likely. I want to try my hand at DMing. I was wanting to experiment with sci-fi and investigation themes (open to including some levels of fantasy if players desire it). Any tips for a first time DM? mainly looking for things like world building, finding players, and how I should build my campaign over time. I think session prep is what scares me the most... maybe balancing stats and all. I have only ever used roll 20 but would be open to using other tools. Thanks!
The 2024 DMG has a lot of great advice
ill def check that out then.
Also, if you're really into running sci-fi games then there are much better systems for that.
im listening 👀
im all open ears for this stuff
The ones I run are Edge of the Empire and Traveller. There are plenty out there depending on what flavour of sci-fi you want
There's also Starfinder, which is D&D adjacent
is there a wide amount of sci fi style maps out there?
There are plenty
Or if you prefer to stick with d&d, the Spelljammer setting is sci-fi-esque
Let's see if I can remember the right tag for this

hahaha thanks i didnt even see that
i have the 2014 or is the 2024 better
whats the best place to find world maps, zone maps, etc? especially for a dark and gritty sci fi style of thing?
czepeku
2 minute tabletop is my go to
you pay a few dollars and get thousands of maps
other than various inkarnate subreddits
the 2024 one is somewhat better at teaching new DMs - the 2014 one is quite good for DMs who already know what they're doing
those are also really good
i got the full package from 2 minute tabletop a week or two ago when it was on sale
not sure if thats still the case but im really satisfied with it
ok thanks ill have to find a way to get one of those then
they also have a ton of free ones ofc
and while im at it i have the 2014 monsters manual is that one fine or should i get the 2024 one as well
2024 is better in every way lol
eh idk about that, new manual cuts a lot of lore
but the stat blocks are generally a lot better and trim a lot of the fat
the art is a huge glowup too
Generally, the 2024 material has better qol and production quality (more and higher quality art) and it's the version that is going to be supported going forward. So that's why it's generally recommended to go with 2024.
For the Monster Manuals especially, it makes little sense to get both, as they largely contain the same monsters.

I heard that Artificers can easily make some gold by selling their replicated magic items for example acid vials with the alchemy jug. But I feel like sending stones could be worth a lot more, how much can I sell those for?
You'll need to check with your DM as they decide what rules are in effect at any given game context at their table and they may adjust prices of things based on a variety of factors.
There are some rules for selling magic items in Xanathar's
Though still it'd come down to the DM
It's also not unlike saying: "You can easily make a lot of money selling some colored water that you're pretending are healing potions".
It's only easy as long as people don't recognize the scam.
Yeah and the DM may decide that if those items leave your general area (e.g. not with you or the party), they lose their magical enchantments and break apart... DM's generally don't like game breaking shenanigans such as ways to get infinite gold.
Bear in mind if you make a sending stone and sell it, it’s one of your infusion slots used so you either never use it again or you use it and maybe have a grumpy customer wondering why his rocks don’t work anymore
Though also if I'm not wrong, replicated magic items take up your infusion slot, so you'd either be permanently out of that slot if you keep the item magical, or you're scamming people when the infusion ends
Great minds saragon
So best case scenario you'll get a handful of gold in exchange for some ✨consequences ✨ afterwards
I can make them once a day
But yeah I was just reading that infusions are temporary and merchants might see through it, or just use the identify spell to learn that those sending stones are temp.
Well then I can just pick alchemy jug and sell the liquid (acid I think is the most valuable one) it produces.. the products from alchemy jug should stay indefinitely.
Plus I'm dwarf, alchemy jug might be useful to always have some beer at hand even while adventuring
You're more likely to end up with the DM pulling you aside and discussing how game-breaking infinite resource generating tricks do not lead to a fun D&D time for everyone at the table (which includes the DM) and to please knock it off or they will remove the item at issue or remove you as a player at their table.
I just need that extra gold for a shield that's it.
And a 100 gp gem for the humunculus servant
Anyway what's more useful in general between sending stones and alchemy jug?
Sending stones have been used more often to good effect in my games. After all, it solves one of the main issues when the party separates, even just for a short distance.
Probably sending stones. Communication with long distance tends to be more useful than jug that gives you same stuff you could just buy for few silver at most
Hello :D
Alright! Sending stones it is then. I was thinking alchemy jug mainly for roleplay reasons because my dwarf loooooves beer.. and alchemy jug can produce free beer 🍺
What is the minimum time for a dnd session? I really wanna try out the character I made but I am busy a lot. Also I have no clue about dnd, only know I can roleplay as my lady and I love it
Typically a D&D session is anywhere from 2-4 hours but each D&D group is different and there have been some D&D sessions running for 8+ hours (with breaks) and in other cases short sessions lasting maybe an hour.
So it widely varies
But typically 2-4 hours.
I am kinda scared to try ngl haha. I would love to try but I would need a DM to be my tutorial lol
You may also want to check out Play by Post games (text-based D&D) as they are typically asynchronous (so you post when you're able) and thus not tied to a specific "play" time.
Ooooh
I'd suggest checking out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules first
You could always look to see if there is a game store nearby that offers D&D nights, they often have newbie friendly DM's for shorter sessions.
Sadly I live in god knows where and I have none of these. I would have gone immediately :(
Okie dokie, tysm :3
When you feel like you have a decent grasp of the core game mechanics (don't have to memorize it but knowing how to make a character and how to do standard dice rolls such as a d20 test really helps) and ready to look for a group, check out #find-a-game for info and instructions on how to use the Looking For Game channels here on our server.
Oh I already have a character stats written out. I had someone help me with those from this server
I have a dragonborn druid lady :3
I specialize in multi classing my characters
Multi classing??
Basically taking a level in another class when you level up, instead of the one you start as
Not something you need to worry about as a beginner 😛
Is multi classing worth it most of the time?
Pretty much only if you know what you're wanting from it for optimization. Otherwise you have a good chance of just weaking yourself severely
Makes sense
It sounds like a cool idea; "Wow I get to play as TWO classes!", but it's not that simple
nope
So if I'm a rune knight fighter going for a grappler unarmed fighting build, is there any multi class that could help me achieve that?
monk
Yeah I figured
2 levels should suffice
I kinda know what multi classing is as everyone in my party, except me, had to multi class as a warlock for a story reason
Also multiclassing is not really a newcomer topic, so you might want to move to #character-discussion
Well I was just learning what it was but that makes sense
That's.... definitely an odd decision on the DM's part
maybe they made a pact idk
Like what do the warlock mechanics add to the story
I guess it's part of the campaign
again, a pact
You can have a patron, or patron -like entity without mechanically multiclassing into warlock
yes, but maybe the DM didn't know
It had something to do with them inhailing winds of a titan
You don't need to ping me each time
And then they were confronted by the patron of one of my party members
then warlock makes even less sense lol
okay saragon
Yeah one of my friends was bound to a Patron for a while and he confronted all of the party members that had their guard down from inhaling the winds
I was the only one who chose not to and got to escape before nearly dying in combat
I guess? Idk
i meant won't ping
It isn't worth it most of the time.
no, it isn't
But yeah this is definitely one of the "traps" people fall into when it comes to multiclassing, which includes some DM's choosing a player should get levels as another class
Like often I see people (including one of my own) wanting to multiclass into Cleric or Paladin because their character has either found god or their story starts to move towards helping or even serving one, but nothing says your character can't just be religious without multiclassing into it. It's possible to just roleplay it
Same for the Warlock example. A player or the whole party can have a powerful patron they're working for without having to become warlocks. That's something the DM can just show in the game and story, rather than taking on unnecessary levels in class that adds nothing but the mechanics, really
Multiclsssing for no good reason usually just delays your progression. The build also takes more character levels before it goes online
You can be nature related or protect the nature without multiclassing into ranger or druid, or tell stories and song without levels in bard
That makes sense
Sure, sometimes you might want something from a class because some mechanic or ability from it really adds to your character's fantasy, in which case sometimes, sometimes multiclassing can be the right choice, but as I said before, definitely not a beginner topic, and definitely nothing you should do just for the sake of multiclassing 😛
Newbie GM mistake
Well my friends dad is the DM so idk if he's new or not
Yeah maybe he played more when he was younger and is just getting back into it? Idk
Anyway a level in warlock isn't really a deal breaker. It's just a dead level for most builds.
Yeah
And adds unnecessary complexity
But they all got Eldritch blast I guess lol
There are definitely worse one level dips.
is it possible for one world to handle 50 players ?
I was thinking of making dnd activity in some server and was wondering if it would be possible to have 50 players in one world but different regions
Certainly. That number of players would probably want multiple DMs. The trick is going to be getting those DMs to communicate together with reports of how each party is doing, what kind of things they're changing with their adventures.
Say there's a road that the merchants avoid because of Shinsnap the ogre and his hobgoblin henchmen. Prices in the region have gone up. Then a band of adventurers show them a fireball or two. Your DMs will need to know about the change.
I was thinking about 10 groups of 5, a dm for each of them, and a main dm for the main lore who would also handle events that involve multiple parties
It's definitely possible, but it will take some organisation.
I was also thinking of that, a channel for DMs to communicate and report after each session to make sure things are in sync
my biggest concern is would it be fine if most of those players had no experience playing DND ?
like just teaching them the basics at first before actually starting
Run one-shots. Make a schedule, gather regular players and DMs.
thanks a lot
I gotta research this a lot before actually presenting it to server management for approval
Yes, but that would require multiple GMs.
GM ?
GM = DM
This is something that you'll have to work on and build up. It might be possible to gather fifty players in a weekend, but you'll get better results if you start small and develop outwards.
Getting players is orders of magnitude easier than getting GMs. You should take that into consideration when planning your community game
of course, I can take my time gathering information and planning things for it to be organized and not turn out to be a mess
yeah I was told that, of course I would have to get DMs and finish setting up things before actually getting players
Best of luck
Hi, I'm new and not sure where to start with finding a group 🙂
I finished building my character on DnDBeyond and downloaded the character sheet, but that's about it

Ah, ty
The ease of the game really depends on what class you’re playing, although I would recommend using DnDbeyond .com to start
Thats not rlly what I meant, but still, thx
Uh, what's an encumbrance? I was overwhelmed before with all the info thrown at me in the dnd beyond character maker, now im lost-
How much you can carry. If you go over, you're encumbered, which is unhelpful.
Rules about how much you can carry before incurring penalties
Many GMs ignore it
Ah, I see
Or greatly simplify it
But unless you load up with tons of tools and such or have an especially low Strength score it doesn't tend to come up anyway.
I understand now, thx alot, ill definatly be back here tho :D
There's an option in Beyond to disable it. Ask your GM how they handle encumbrance
Alr, ill keep all this in mind
It may also be worth noting that the rules term for this is Carrying Capacity:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#CarryingCapacity
It's how much your character can carry, period. There is no "over this you're encumbered".
Encumbrance is a term that DDBeyond added themselves. There is a variant rule in the 2014 version of 5e that was called Variant: Encumbrance though. In this variant ruleset, there is such a thing as overencumbered.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#LiftingandCarrying
Other than that though, I agree with the others that it's very much up to the DM in how much this all matters.
I'm looking for a DND group, played only twice before and haven't Dmd yet
Welcome! If you’re looking for a group to play with, then you should head over to the #find-a-game channel and read through the instructions posted there. That will guide you though the process of looking for a group
Thank you
How do I make custom species?
Did you go to collections - browse/create homebrew on the webpage
We sent the links in #character-discussion
Sry, there's lots of things I don't notice, I'm still confused about alot of stuff
Maybe hold off homebrewing things until you learn the system/game first,
What race are you trying to make it may already exist
I'm trying to make some kind of human-insect thing, idk what to call so I'm settling for insectoid for now
Thri kreen are the insect race
I didnt see those when making mine, also, I want a more specialised species for my character, its rlly just a small human with bug traits
What traits?
Wings, like, a hundred eyes, entenni, etc, thier still mostly gonna be human tho, like soft skin, hands, yknow, normal human things we all have
Ion feel like going into explicite details rn
But if it helps I can
So you want to be able to fly?
Yep
You may have to homebrew them, you could reflavour a fairy
But all this will need DM approval so bear that in mind
I already started from scratch lmao, im on the short desc part
Dungeon master, right?
Yes
Hi hi
Welcome!
tyyy hru?
im wondering where to start, I honestly know nothing about dnd, should I look for a game first or try to make a character?
I'd generally wait to build my final character until I know more about the campaign itself.
But I'd definitely recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters you might enjoy.
Then when you do find a group, you can work together to pick the one that fits best and add any finishing details.
I’m still relatively new (I’ve done a handful of 1 shots and I’m in my second full campaign) and when I started I first sort of played with looking at a few classes that appealed to me, made a few ideas of characters just to get a feel. But, once I found a group I ended up modifying or making new characters to fit the flavour of the campaign.
How far have you gone down the rabbit hole so far? Found any classes that catch your eye? Are there things you are excited about? Or nervous about?
You can try to make a character for practice, and to get familiar with the ruleset

Thank you so much 🙂 that's kind of you
Oh, you're supposed to go to #find-a-game for that.
Have you read the instructions carefully?
Hello!! Is this the right place to ask questions?
Depends on the question, but if you're new to D&D and want to learn how something works then yep, ask away!
Yeah so! I am currently a new dm/players in a place where there are no good players/dms and where i know absolutely nothing about d&d, i really want to start with some friends but i dont know where to start (pen and paper way)
Hello there, I'm new to DnD and have some questions about combat system as I don't understand it too well.
If DM describes a fight and make choice to attack can character try to dodge it additionally or stop NPCs attack if it's close enough or is it all about the roll and how tou (as DM) describe the outcome? It might be a stupid question but I only played one campaign and have not learned much about how the system works
Just describe what you want to do and let the GM adjudicate
So, every creature has a stat on their character sheet or stat block that is called Armor Class or AC for short. When an attack is made against that creature, the attacker rolls a d20 and adds their modifiers. If the total from that roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC, then the attack hits. If it’s lower than their AC, then the attack misses.
Your AC is a numerical representation of your ability to block and dodge attacks. So a light and nimble rogue and a heavily armored fighter will both have a high AC. The flavor descriptions of whether you dodge out of the way or shrug off the attack with a shield or whatever else is up to you and the DM. The numbers and dice are what determine if you hit or not
But normally, that is the point of AC. If the attack doesn't hit, it can be flavoured as a dodge
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC.

Hi I read basics and rules abt this server so I somehow know basics. I'm new to d&d and have played only 2 d&d. Would someone be willing to help me learn or join some d&d games for me to grasp how it all works. I would appreciate it

[2] What style of game does the group play?
A D&D 5th edition campaign set in a custom/fictional world.
↑
should i be equipped with some sort of playing deck or kit ?
or are my playing d20 d6 d...... enough ?
does it explain also some rules that i should know or does it only concern theme of session ?
"D&D 5th edition" tells you which version of the rules of D&D that game would be using. 5th edition is the most recent one, but some groups like playing older editions. Think of it like a video game that releases sequels every once in a while. Most people play Smash Ultimate now, but Melee still has a dedicated fan base. D&D works the same way.
"set in a custom fictional world" tells you that the DM has created their own world for that game to take place in. Some D&D games take place in pre-established worlds, and others are wholly unique, so they're just letting you know what to expect for this game
As for what you'd need to purchase, its actually possible to play D&D for completely free. You'll need a set of dice, but digital dice can be used for free if the DM allows it. The basic rules are free, and they include a bare minimum of character customization options, so you could make a character using just that. Purchasing other rulebooks and such would give you access to more options. Or you could potentially barrow rule books from the people you're playing with, or use online content sharing if the group is playing digitally
so I should probably learn those rules before every session right, damn thats a lot of rules if there is so many of those d&d versions like you said
You definitely don't have to learn the rules for every version of the game! Most people just pick the one they like and stick with that. Its not like you're going to be surprised by getting into a game using rules you aren't familiar with. I've been playing D&D for about 8 years now, and I've never played anything except 5th edition.
Even within the edition that you choose to play, you don't have to memorize everything. You just need a passing familiarity with it. There will be 4-5 other people in the group with you to help remind you of anything you might forget, and its perfectly fine to open a rulebook and check something while you're playing. That's totally normal
Good start. Do you want to have it checked over in #character-discussion or do you want to start searching for a game?

i want to play an owlin artificer but i dont want to pay anything on dnd beyond. any tips on filling out a charcter sheet??
Print off a PDF character sheet, borrow Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (or other book that has the artificer class), start filling it out.
No need to use DnDBeyond unless that's what you and your group use.
Or if your group is in a DnDBeyond campaign and someone has Tashas and someone has an active Master Tier subscription, the DM can enable content sharing and everyone's stuff gets shared with everyone else in that camapign
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
oh ok thank you!! ive relied far too much on DNDBeyond. ive played for years and still dont know how to fill one out on paper 😭

#find-a-game for looking for game
Multiclassing question. If I take like one (1) level in Wizard, so long as I have the spellslots for it, can I copy basically any wizard spell in my spellbook? Like, say I go 1 Wiz / 19 Sorcerer. Do I have access to like LVL 7 wizard spells if I happen across a scroll, or nay?
You can only learn spells of a level you can prepare
And you can only prepare wizard spells as per your wizard levels, so sadly that doesn't work out.
Where can I find an online dnd game to join?
If you want to use this server to find a ground check out how to in #find-a-game !
So.
Someone explain checks to me and how do i get naturally accommodate them
Into the game?
What to use and when?
Assuming you mean as a DM, you'd use them to determine whether a player succeeds at something when there is a chance of failure
You would decide a DC (A number they need to reach with a d20 roll + modifier + potential proficiency if they are proficient)
What skill to use you would decide based on the task, and what skill is closest to reaosnable.
Moving somehting heavy? Athletics
Trying to balance on something like a rope? Acrobatics
Trying to see or listen to something? Perception
Etc. etc.
Whenever someone is doing something that isn't Attacking, or being forced to Save against something, and that thing is also reasonably accomplishable but not a given, it typically manifests as an Ability Check.
Examples include what Saragonvoid said, but each skill has their own description as to what they apply to, as well as a typically associated ability, such as Wisdom for Perception and Insight, or Dexterity for Stealth and Sleight of Hand.
So if someone wants to peek into a room and see if they spot anything hidden, they'd make a Wisdom (Perception) check to see how well their character does at that. If they enter the room and start looking at the state of it and want to see what their character could deduce from the details, they'd make an Intelligence (Investigation) check to see how well their character is able to investigate it.
When the task isn't clearly impossible like shooting the moon with an arrow or jumping to it, or so easy like petting a friendly dog or sitting down on a stool, and is instead of a reasonable decree of being unsure if the character does or does not succeed, a check comes along to set it to chance, with characters more specialized in it being more likely to succeed, and the sheer existence of the chance encouraging them to give themselves every edge they can, such as using rope and pitons when climbing, a crowbar when prying something open, or piecing together some clues they already have and seeing if their character can notice something about a specific topic.

Its basically to help with diffrent things like if a wizard goes around studying all day he wouldnt be great at survival.
But he would be insane at something like history.
Unlike a knight who wouldnt know anything about arcane but alot about sword craft and thus survival and other-related checks?
Is that right or am i still shooting in the dark?
bother ur close friends to play the dragon game with you

Okay now
How do i
As the dm
Figure out which check to run and when?
Like if a situation requires 2 different checks to be used what do i pick?
For example.
An owlbear with weird arcanic things going on its body.
Do i get them to run an arcane check or a survival check or a history check to see if they have met an owlbear before?
Your call as the GM
Oh no, I don’t have any friends to play with
And it could be different ones, for different answers.
Converted my entire friend group.
On my way to
Open a dnd club in the university
Might be a nature check to recognise the owlbear, but also note that something doesn't seem right, and an arcana check to notice that there are enchantments/spells involved.
Do i have to get them to run a single check?
Or can i say something along the lines of “run an arcane and nature check”
bother ur coworkers
Maybe a player will ask 'Can I roll X?' and you can ask how they think that'll apply and what they're looking for, and decide if not applicable or have them roll.
One tip- don't hide information you want players to know behind a check. Just decide 'The druid being familiar with animals knows X'
They must be separate checks.
i think i understand it
Checks should be used for when there is a consequence to failure, and that failure doesn't just stall the plot. You don't need to roll for everything- especially for knowledge or noticing things, sometimes it's more fun and interesting to just give them the information that helps move things along. Only hide things if not knowing something gives an interesting complication.
(Also this might be better moved to #dm-discussion at this point)
Understood #dm-discussion
Vaguely.
Typically Wizards invest in high intelligence which naturally lends to skills using intelligence, and their Proficiencies tend to lie among those knowledge skills such as Arcana. On the other hand, a Fighter typically has more physical skills, like Acrobatics and athletics, and goes for strength or Dexterity. Natural class desires for certain abilities, as well as what skills the class can choose from, lend themselves towards constructing these differences.
However, an eldritch knight fighter might go for intelligence, and gain a skill proficiency to close the gap between fighter and wizard.
This channel is more for covering the basics of the game and rules for getting started, but in depth DM tips and advice on running the game is better for #dm-discussion so as to avoid overwhelming new comers coming into here just to learn the basics.
this was more complicated than i anticipated
Yeah got it
Thank you so much for your help
Anyone got any tips on when your players kill a merchant you spent 3 hours on?
Yo how this John work can I like find a group of people here to play with or how dose it work mb if that sounds stupid I’m not not sure
Did they have a genuine reason or are they acting out because they're bored/ it's not real/ they're agents of chaos?
It was pretty boss fight and there was buildup, they were neutral chaos
If you stat it, they can kill it. I imagine the world might have a reaction. The merchant might have a family, influential connections displeased that he's been killed, there could be legal consequences.
They were unfortunately in a cave and they did mass genocide abiding by "heavy stealth"-no one survives so no one can call the alarm
Someone will notice when the merchant doesn't come out. Someone will probably send people looking for them. That someone might have any amount of access to skills and sorcery to figure out what happened.
All you've got to do is start posting missing person notices around the area. Then after a little while, murder investigation notices.
Ah,thx for the advice

Can I be a cleric and have a gun to heal people?
Flavor is free (describing how your healing magic works as "using a gun" may be fine - run it by your group).
Just don't touch the mechanics.
A bullet for you! And for you!
Outside of UndyingNoobs great point about flavour being free. I think any DM with a sense of style would let you use a blowgun to shoot goodberries into people's mouths.
Is that supposed to be a TF2 medic

This is so cool I might cut my depression by this I have this feeling
Ok tht sounded fun but idk where I will find groups and stuff
That's actually a fairly big topic! Most groups are privately organized.
Here on the server we have an lfg system, which you can read about here: #find-a-game
It also lists some good other places to look for groups.
There is also this unofficial guide by community member iamrazorwing that is helpful in giving an overview: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
But like how am I gonna know when they r making a group
Its private uk so how will I know
These will be advertised in the listed channels and locations.
I recommend reading through the info in #find-a-game
It has further links to the channels that list the open games.
I can help with character creation etc.
Hi everyone. I'm totally new in the dnd world. A friend convince me to play and I really loved creating my character but since their campaign won't start anytime soon. I came to try find one and have fun
okay someone explain the difference between the wizard/mage classes.
like what does.
Sorcerer
Warlock
Wizard
do that makes them different.
from what i have read.
they have access to different spell lists and grow differently
similarly.
the difference between Monks Barbarians & Fighter?
find a character?
#character-discussion ftw
I’m not sure about this, I’m basically a newcomer taking account all I know, but I think sorcerer roles are born with magic but Wizards usually have to learn magic, don’t listen to me I don’t know anything
pretty sure thats about it tbh.
A campaign, or a group to play with. I already have characters.
Also, I don’t know about this but I think wizards use a weapon like a wand but sorcerers don’t need that
oh in that case #looking-for-community assuming you dont have anyone to play with at the moment
and
#looking-for-dm assuming you have players with you
Thanks
Hello! I’m new to the game, and I was wondering if there was anyway for me to spectate a new/ongoing game to learn the rules?
I understand at the time of sending this message it may be very early/late, so it obviously doesn’t have to be right now, I was just curious! ❤️
Don’t spectate any of my games that I DM, lol, they are nothing like DnD is
Okay XD
Wizards get the biggest list of spells to pick from, and use Intelligence as their spellcasting ability.
Sorcerers are slightly more focused on direct action spells, but also gain the ability to change some details about how they work. Their spellcasting ability is Charisma.
Warlocks have the fewest spells, but recover more quickly after using them. They have a set of features called eldritch invocations which offers high customisation. They use Charisma for spellcasting.
See, I told you I didn’t know what I was talking about

If looking for a game, best to check out #find-a-game and find a new player friendly game there. As for spectating, there are quite a few actual plays you can watch, although one thing to note for watching any group play is that they may have different rules and styles to each other- and by their nature actual plays intend to be played in a way that will be entertaining for an audience. #dnd-media could recommend some good Actual plays to watch.
Thank you for the advice! ❤️
"direct action spells"?
Spells that have a direct, often immediate & tangible effect on someone.
So spells like Fireball, Chaos Bolt, Chromatic Orb over spells like Forcecage, Dream, Phantom Steed, etc
I have been wanting to play dnd for a little while now and I was wondering if its a good idea to start with playing a oneshot?
Yep, Oneshots are great ways to feel how you vibe with a group without commiting to a longer campaign.

Ok
I also have a question
What are the different types of dices for?
For example which dice is for the judgement call or which dice is for actions like attacking
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
So you're mostly going to use the d20 (20-sided dice) to run D20 tests - e.g. "Make an attack roll to see if you hit the goblin with your longsword".
Player rolls a d20 and adds their proficiency bonus and modifiers (if applicable) and tells you the result. If that attack meets or beats the goblin's Armor Class, it hits.
You can then ask the player to roll damage - let's say they are using the longsword one-handed so they would roll 1d8 (that's a 8-sided dice) and add their strength modifier to see how much damage they do.
Ahh
You can also ask players to make Skill Checks (another kind of D20 test) to do things like "Break open the door with a kick"
"Okay give me an athletics check to see how well that works".
You as the DM set a Difficulty Challenge level - let's say this is a pretty sturdy door and somewhat challenging to break with just a single kick, so you decide to set the DC at 14.
That makes a lot more sense now, thank you very much
Player rolls a d20 and adds any proficency bonus and modifiers to the roll and if they meet or beat the DC, they succeed at the task.
Also don't ask folks to roll for mundane things or where success is guaranteed with time - usually you only need it where there's a risk of failure or a time-critical element to it.
"You failed to kick the door open but the echoing sound of your boot thumping into the door has surely alerted the guards..."
How do I setup a campaign online? I've heard that dnd beyond is a good way to create a campaign,
Oh so many ways lol
Noob is such a great teacher!
What do u recommend?
I like Discord and Avrae + DnDBeyond but some folks really like having a virtual tabletop with maps and tokens so they use Roll20, Foundry, Owlbear.rodeo or other tools.
But at it's heart all you need is a way to communicate, the basic D&D rules and/or additional D&D books/materials, character sheets for players, and a way to roll dice.
What's the one you use the most the most?
I use Discord for voice, D&D Beyond for the characters and rules, and Roll20 for my battle maps. all very simple to use and can be used for free until you are ready to full immerse yourself if yo u get ther
I run my games using Discord, Avrae (Discord bot that helps with dice rolls/lookups/characters - Avare connects to DnDBeyond), and DnDBeyond for character sheets.
Or in person (only occasionally do I get to do this) using physical books, laptop for Avrae lookup/digital dice rolls and DM notes, paper character sheets printed from DnDBeyond, and physical dice.

Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.
What is meant by a Westmarch campaign?
?westmarch
Ah okay thought we had a command for that
Westmarch is a style of game where there's no set DM or group. Folks get together, find a DM willing to run a session, and then play.
Typically it's an open and shared world - meaning what one group does impacts the world for other groups.
Ah okay, thank you. The local game store had a post about starting one and I didnt know what it meant.
You can check some of the servers advertising in #looking-for-community to get a feel for a westmarch game as many of them offer such games.

Do Westmarch campaigns typically have like a mission board where you can pull missions from to run? I think I've seen that at my local game store.
Many have something like that. Others are more world exploration with incidents/locations you run across while exploring.
Does anybody here know how to properly do the spells section of the character sheet?
And like everything else? :')
Spells.
- First check your class table to see how many spells you know at what level and how many slots and what level of slots you have at that level.
- Next go through the spells that your class has access to and note which ones seem interesting and that you'd like to take
- Then add those spells to your spell list and then mark which ones you have prepared (refer to your class to know how many you can have prepared)
hello, i have quite a few questions about some rules and stuff. could anyone dm me and help me?
Ask and people will answer if they're around
i have too many questions to write here, I'd be spamming the chat lol
If theyre more specific questions just ask in the proper channel and you should be fine. And if you have a long list just split the questions up
Questions are why this channel exists!
Lots of other people have the same questions, too.
So fire at will
Theyre a moderator, if it turns out theyre too many blame them 😂
hi i've never played d&d digitaly but i have played the bord game version so i know the ropes

Hi all! I’m a bit older (40s) and never played D&D because I never had friends who played. Have always loved the novels, games and am a fan of Critical Role. Want to find a newbie friendly group to play with. Any advice?
#find-a-game try it out
well alright then.
- in a campaign with a set story (DoIP) do i get items that are already available to go with all their stats and what not and also what part of the story the players get them?
- in a custom campaign how do i give players loot? how do i decide what loot goes where and how good they should be?
- i noticed one some character sheet PDF's there's 3 pages, last one being the spellcasting page? is it not a necessity? is it just something u should have for convenience or does it change based on ur characters class?
- is there a simpler version of DoIP's story that i can find that's easier to understand?
- what exactly is inspiration? how do u get it?
- is there a map i can find of every place in DoIP? the set has one map and i was wondering if i can find more online so i can print them out to have them to play on.
- how do i get my proficiency bonus?
- do some saving throws and skills get locked based on having a certain race or class? and do they get "buffed" by the same logic?
- how do i give my players their starter loot? do the classes come with their own starter equipment? should i refer to DnD beyond to see those items?
I see noob typing so imma just let them answer
- Items are rewards usually for doing either a thing called for or for completing that part of the adventure (or for completing the entire adventure). Usually the adventure spells out when the reward is handed out and for what reason.
- The DM identifies items that fit the adventure and what the player characters could use. Generally it's easiest to start with consumables (limited use) as that way it's limited and won't break the game. That said, feel free to test things out - and be willing to walk it back if needed (communication is critical! let players know you reserve the right to pull it back or modify it for game balance reasons).
- Spellcasting page is nice to have for those characters who are spellcasters to list their spells, how many spell slots they have available, and indicate which spells they have prepared.
- I don't have an answer for this
- Inspiration is a reward the DM can hand out to reward good play and funny or epic moments. They allow a player to reroll a d20 in a D20 test.
- Not sure on this but you can check #dnd-maps for inspiration and tools for building your own maps if you want.
- Proficiency bonus is determined by your level - check your class table to see your proficiency bonus for your level.
- You get proficiency in certain saving throws based on your class. You may also get bonuses based on other features from background, class, or feats. Typically not from race/species.
- Classes come with their own starter equipment - refer to the class description in the rules to find what each class starts with. Also starting backgrounds may provide additional equipment.
And for reference, check the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
thank you so much
One of the things I've been having the most fun with since my first one shot is putting a character together, but I'm seeing things that suggest it's not always good to make character to bring to a campaign, but build one specifically for that particular campaign. Are there any opinions or recommendations about which is the more preferred approach?
Really comes down to personal preference for the most part. Though ifyou have pre-made characters you may need to alter them a little to fit certain campaigns, but no harm in having overall idea for the character planned
Check out #find-a-game for instructions on the LFG channels
In anyones opinion is DnD better online or in person?
I think in person is better in most cases but online is fine too
In-person absolutely works best for roleplay and nothing beats rolling physical dice, though online is so much easier to schedule, and online tools make things lot simpler
All TRPGs are better in person.
What makes in person better?
These are social games. Social activities are always better in person.
I prefer in person because I find it easier to roleplay and interact with the rest of the group, and because I like rolling really dice/minis
I also just like the break from staring at my computer 😁
Where can I find people to play online with?
I never played D&D so very new to the premise, but I’m only interested in playing if there’s dinosaurs involved
They can be involved. I use them in one of my five campaigns

Hi, I have never played D&D like ever, I checked on some websites. I have checked the thing that Dyno bot is talking about on how to find a game. But is there a list of places I can find 5th edition games for free online. Because I am not really prepared to spend money on D&D. I have tried to find a party on another TTRPG but had no luck. Got any tips?
Just keep trying on discord ddb and reddit and youll find something it might just take a bit
Its usually easier to find if you make sure you mention youre new if you post an add yourself and if you look around that you look for the games saying newbie friendly as well and you should normally find something somewhat quickly
You wont need to spend money but at the same time if you would the quality and consistency of the campaign would be higher( i only play without money involved too though )
For places to look:
This discord
Dnd beyond forum
Reddit(sry but no clue if im allowed to link subreddits)
Hello
does anyone know where i can find every class's subclasses? DnD beyond only shows me like 1 for each class
Hmm
Buy the core rulebooks.
the free rules only come with one unfortunately.
So like- I honestly have NO idea how to play or even start a dnd game
I didn’t either but a couple weeks ago people taught me how to play
I have all the books and stuff for it but idk
Damn
is there a website or online template i could use to make a character?
D&D Beyond has a character creator
What edition are you playing?
5th edition
Then yeah D&DBeyond should be fine
If you’re playing 2014 rules only then you’ll just need to enable the legacy content toggle on the first page of the character creator
also how would multi classing work if you start at lvl 7?
would it be a few levels behind?
If you are beginner, I would highly advise against multiclassing. To answer your question: You would split those 7 levels between different classes (ie. Fighter4/Wizard3)
If you dont have the books then you wont see them
In what way exactly?
Just asking because I actually have a dinosaur theme D&D book can’t use it because I have no interest in being the dungeon master
And I mostly have interest in taming dinosaurs
Have you considered reading the Players Handbook?
How can I play online with other people? I don't have any friends who play.

Wait how come is it just confusing?
Or a lot to remember and and keep track of
Youre having to learn 2 classes instead of one and perferably youd have to find stuff that synergizes
That doesn’t sound that bad
There's rules to the multiclassing and it isn't just anyone can multiclass into any class and get everything from the other class
And its very easy to make yourself weaker if you don't know what you're doing
Basically don't multiclass just for the sake of multiclassing, without knowing what you want from the multiclass. It's really not a beginner topic also
I mean youre free to do so, but generally its more effort to get a good multiclass
Lets go to #character-discussion
Ok
To be more specific, you'd want to know mechanically what kind of synergy you would be getting, not just "I wanna play these two classes"
@jesoe
Yo me an my friend are new to dnd this is his first time even trying it an my first time doing it to anyone wanna join the campaign
If you multiclass as a level 3 cleric and into a level 1 paladin. Would you lose everything from both classes if you decided to become an Oathbreaker?
Advertising on public channels is against the rules. Head towards #find-a-game.
Oh I’m sorry I didn’t know
No. Though multiclassing is something quite complicated. Proceed at your own risk.
