most creatures that do damage will kill a monkey in one hit. you wouldnt have time to heal it
Awe shucks, I’ll stick with the bag then
please don't count on that being allowed. you might get one trained creature from a DM but infinite? hmm
unless you and the DM agree that the monkey will not be used in combat, will only be used to allow you to communicate and thus won't be harmed or targetted.. but not everyone allows that stuff
What’s wrong with a bag of infinite monkeys that know sign language and English making them my translator so once they die I can just open my bag of screaming monkeys (the bag would be soundproof) and grab a new one as my new best friend. And yeah no combat what so ever
the shared language would be "common" and monkeys dont have a language or speak common so already it has to be magical to allow you that "flavor". It's not something typical of the game so it would need what we call "DM buy in" to be allowed.
What if say it was trained at a monastery where my monk was, and taught with years of experience to speak English and translate sign language?
Anything that goes beyond the actual core rules would need to be discussed with your DM and table.

Hi Edward
new here i know the basics looking to join a game
Go to #looking-for-players
Uh can anyone help me with character creation, I'm really bad and DND beyond won't let me email work for some reason
You can try on DDB, but if DDB isn't working for you, you can step through the steps here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
If you get stuck, just let us know and someone can probably help.
If DDB won't accept your email, you can also try #ddb-support .
Just started dabling in League play and had two questions would love some help on. 1 What do you do with low rarity magic items after they are not useful. 2 how do you get specific magic items now?
Answer for Q1: If you no longer want a magic item (any permanent magic item, doesn't have to be low rarity), you can either just leave it in your vault or you can try and trade it to someone else for an equivalent rarity item.
does it have to be at table or can it be over server?
Answer for Q2: Getting specific magic items generally requires that you play content that offers a "choice" of magic items or content that allows some type of trade that has the book allowed that your item is in. The only other alternative is Bastions but that requires both level 9 minimum and the item be Common or Uncommon in rarity.
Good info, thank you!
Most trades do not occur at tables. You do have to document the trade though. Who you traded with and all that and pay the DT cost.
If you have an item on another character, you can just trade with your own character. Don't forget though... Downtime has to be paid on both ends of the trade, so both characters need to expend the Downtime.
trades only same quality to same quality? cant trade quantity for a quality above?
Former... Same quality. Also, items have to be permanent and not consumable. So no potions, scrolls, ammunition, etc., can be traded.
Awesome thanks Cal, one more! Is there any Adventure Leagues online? asked google and chatgpt but didnt lead me to where i wanted.
Oh, definitely. 🙂 It's just a lot of it runs on 3rd party Discord servers, in private games, or of course, all manner of in person (I know, not online!). If you attend the Virtual D&D Weekends that run roughly 1/month, they usually have some AL running, but that is pay as it's a type of "online convention" in nature. There's also play-by-post if that's more your speed.
I would send you our local server for Southern Ontario, but it probably wouldn't be much use to you as there's a ton of games running that are all mostly private right now, so when you're in there, it kind of looks dead.
But if you want an invite anyway, I can send.
There are lots of servers though.
so im somewhat new to D&D and i have played in a session before but i built my character weirdly and it ended up being a duel class that overleveled to much, and tbh im not to sure how to properly build a character, and i was wondering if someone could help me with building a character and other stuff (also i like playing more than being a dm but the thought of being a dm seems fun to me)
Best thing to do is start with a single class character and either use D&D Beyond's Character Creator or step through the steps in the free rules. The thing about characters is your (eventual) DM will probably have some custom rules anyway, so it's better to just practice making a character than think, "this WILL be my character".
If you have any questions along the way though, just ask. There's almost always someone around that can help with somewhere you're stuck.
As to the steps to follow, either do D&D Beyond, or this is the link from the Free Rules to do it manually:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
It can be longer to do it manually, but I find people learn more when they go through the steps instead of Beyond filling everything out. You can always use Beyond later once you pick up the basics.
well im always confused when it comes to certain stat destribution so last character i just let the app i had at the time fill it out
Sure, generally, if you put your highest stat in the things needed for your class (explained in the class description!) and your next highest stat in CON, you really can't consider anything else you do that bad a screwup. Stats have some "personal taste to them", but it just really helps to have some HPs (CON) and to be good at your class (the stats associated with the class).
ahh, tbh i got into dnd in highschool but never played much, then i saw the legends of avantris of yt and it made me want to get back into it
Well, welcome back. 🙂 5E, IMHO, makes the game a little easier for more people to play and the diversity in voices and life experiences has been very positive. It's also made it a little easier overall to learn and play. However, as I'm sure you know after having played before, there is a learning curve to any D&D edition.
well thanks for the help, i have the website u linked open so imma try and make something and when im done r u ok if i come back and ask u what u think of it?
Do you want the learn to play bot blurb which can help you find some resources to get you going or you're past that stage?
It may not be me, but sure!
That's what this channel is actually for. To help people who are new to it.
well tbh i am "new", sure ive seen a few things but im so unknowledgeable to alot of things that any help is appreciated
Hey dudes I’m new to the server and I’m looking for some players for the campaign I’m writing I got two and are looking for 2-3 more players but unsure what channel to put the message in haha
but anyway imma go and try to make something

tbh id love to, i may not new alot but it is always nice to make friends through leraning and whatnot lol
Forgot my tags, htere it is. 🙂
lol
The basic rules link gives you the complete free rules. The character creation I sent you is part of that.
imma go and try to make a character real quick and see if i can get the hang of it, and thanks for the help
There are some pay things too, but the free rules gives you enough to create and play. Pay is only needed if you want "more".
You'll get this. it's still D&D at its core which you've done before.
Yooo that’s awesome dude well I got one player who’s pretty experienced and is always happy to help people learn he was my dm during university and was great and helpful and I got a brand new player never played a game in his life haha so I’m open to anyone of any experience level there is no requirements for experience or anything just a good time building a dope story and developing a world that’s been building for a little while now haha
Organizing games is all done through the looking for channels. Read #find-a-game which will explain how to do that on this server. (The moderators are actually always saying it's against server rules to be organizing otherwise.)
Sweetness thanks cal huge help
ok cool, would u be able to dm me the rules u r going to use so i can try and build a character within them?
Just made my first character, can someone check my sheet to see if it's all fine for a regular 5e game?
Of course I can
sure
Aight, gimme a sec and I'll dm you !
i'm using a new, more in-depth character builder, but i am not experienced and don't know much of what this means, so is the Grappler feat as good as it sounds?
For the 2024 monk yes @rich spruce
is it also good for barbarian?
yeah definetly ideal for monks cause of that unarmed strike
it can be, but its a more monk focused thing because of above. though it can still be useful if theres not another feat youwant to take instead
Grappler (2024) is pretty nice if you're going to have free hand(s) and appropriate stats for it. (It's STR based unless you're a Monk basically as it requires Unarmed Strikes.) A lot of characters don't have these things.
It can be, but Barbarians get a bunch of stuff that revolve around doing attacks or with weapons and Grapples in 2024 are neither. You would want to lean in to things that would benefit.
i don't think i'll have free hands with this character, so i think i'll go with great weapon fighting instead
thanks for the advice!
You’re welcome
can i print stuff from roll20
Hi
This I'm not sure as I have never tried. However, Roll20 is 3rd party software from the perspective of the server so the people in #third-party may be able to answer that question better. I can tell you Characters can be printed in D&D Beyond, but most other stuff cannot. (I know, not the question you asked. :))
I’ve been trying to get into d&d but I have no one to play with so I downloaded d$d beyond but I need a campaign to join

@teal temple sorry for the ping but i wanted ur opinion, so i made a character recently, and i have one that i made 2 years ago and i was wondering if i could dm u their character sheets and get ur opinion on them
You can send but I won't have much time to look at it tonight so I would have to get back to you.

Hello!….new here…I hope this is the right place to post/ask?
I haven’t really played dnd much only maybe 6 sessions and then everyone fizzled out sadly….
I love BG3 and I recently finished the podcast Dungeons and Daddies….loved it.
Are there other podcasts or videos I can watch that are similar? Please help or offer advice.
And thank you.
Hi. This server is overwhelming.
I've been wanting to play DND for a couple of years now. I've learned a little about it from a couple different creators and their YouTube shorts. I've never watched critical roll or anything, but from the short clips I've seen of a bunch of live play... Sessions? Campaigns? It's really something I want to do.
So yeah, not really sure how to get in a game, what to look for in other players or DMs. I've heard some great stories and some horror stories so I'm feeling cautious.
Welcome you can find games by reading #find-a-game or for IRL find a local game store
Also don’t put your age against server rules
My baaaad. I have a tendency to skim. I should have paid closer attention 🙏🏽
My only option is online bc I'm in a remote part of SEA.
is there some way or some play to connect with and talk to people where I could potentially be invited to a game?
I did see the application page, but it's a lot of text with no immediately identifiable instructions, which there is nothing wrong with, but my brain refuses to process.
You're in luck; online is the format
Head to #looking-for-players and have a look at the ads and respond in the threads under the ads
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Thanks. That's great advice.
I've been using Bastions as a way to have at least one D&D session where I divide it into individual character sessions with my players and I think I had the best roleplay experience since I started playing the game. My friends aren't big on roleplay but I guess one of them got curious and gave it his all and it felt like a genuine drama. Top 5 moments of D&D for me
Hey guys I have my first DND session in about a week, I've got my character done. Does anyone have a list of what I should bring to my first session? I'd love to hear your thoughts:)
- print out of the sheet if in person
- dice
- good mood
- notebook
I'd also read up on what your character can do in the rules, so you don't need to do it as much during the session.
if you have time, roll checks before hand. roll a d20 and say its a dex saving throw or a stealth check or something so you know where to look on your sheet. really speeds up the process. hit roles and damage are also what i did so i can be super quick and not confuse myself with the amount of dice i end up rolling
but yeah just go in with all your gear and a can-do attitude and youll be fine
alright thanks guys :)
Hello i am fairly new to the server and i have been told that the reason most campaigns are 18+ is due to legal reasons but i am wondering what law goes against playing with a 16 year old.
It’s not technically illegal in itself, but adults are generally (and rightfully) discouraged from spending close time with random children online.
Most servers do have a minimum of 18+ but you can find some servers that are like 15+
Or there are some servers that are just for ages 13-18
In the UK you can be required to have a background check when working/providing a service to anyone under the age of 18 due to safe guarding (DBS check)
Is it okay to just dive in with a overpowered character (I made one with all stats 30 )
:p
No, it’s expected at base that your character follows the rules of character creation barring any custom rules your DM has explicitly added on / modified
If your DM is running a campaign that allows that, sure, but the reality is your DM will have character creation requirements so all 30s is likely just "white room theory".
White room what now😅
It effectively means “just for practice”
Oh, some people come up with builds that work on paper in theoretical universes where everything is optimal or lines up but they sometimes just aren't practical or even feasible in a real game.
Yeah I did make that character to be on the position of GOD , but yea I can see why it is a problem to play with it
Focus on a regular lvl 1 character for now
Case in point, by the rules getting stats above 20 requires very specific features that are either DM-dependent on getting (e.g. Magic Items), or reserved for high level characters (e.g. Epic Boons, some classes’ capstones). It’s impossible to even get a stat to 20 without using the rolling method for stat generation, which is usually only done under the supervision of the DM
I see, what stats would work on a general basis then, like 12 to 16?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Standard array, described above, is recommended.
What if I put all stats 15 (as per standard cap)
Then you're not following the rules, which is generally a problem for most tables.
That’s not allowed officially, since you’re using a 15 / 15 / 15 / 15 / 15 / 15 array
If you wanted a little more customization while also following the rules I’d recommend using the Point Cost (aka Point Buy) method
Ok, i think I will make a character now and get you guys' opinion
That way I will put 5 on each and divide the rest on str and dex
That’s not how the points work
As long as you’re following the Point Buy rules it should be fine. It’s totally possible to get a 13, 13, 13, 13, 13, 10 array with Point Buy, by buying 5 points into 5 scores and 2 points into the last one but I wouldn’t recommend it
Reread the score point cost link
I don't think there has ever been an official D&D stats method that was just make up numbers. Generally, it is either rolled (often in front of DM) or "here are some rules to use to generate numbers without dice".
What if the die rolled a 20, does that apply
No, that is not an official method to use a d20 for stats
The only official methods are the ones described in the Dyno post:
#dnd-newcomers message
I see
Hi I just joined what’s happening?
If that were the die rolling method for your edition, sure. However, D&D die rolling methods have loosely revolved around 3d6 since the beginning. (4d6 drop lowest is just a higher averaging range of 3d6.)
Helping newbies learn character creation rules, welcome!
I'm nooob
Ahh ok thanks star
All been there at some point. It takes a while to learn but you get to play while you learn. Win-win?!
If I were to make a sniper type user who used time magic would that work or would it be an absolute flop on an actual campaign?
Hello
Btw, has anyone seen the big bang theory, they play d&d at some episode, that is where I learned of this
Yeah it was a fun one although I joined cause of a friend
I am currently watching tbbt no way
Good friend. MHO.:)
Yes lol
True, my friends only like fps games
Sad but imma be honest I also love fps games I’m joining dnd as a surprise for my friend since he doesn’t have anyone in our friend group that plays
It depends on what you’d want mechanically out of the character. A “sniper” or otherwise long-ranged character is totally fine and easy. Many offense-oriented spells have a decent range.
There aren’t a lot of official spells that explicitly interact with time. What I would do is take a look at spells that seem fun to “reflavor” for a time-theme. Reflavoring is changing the narrative description of something without changing the mechanics. For example, if you took the Shield spell you could reflavor it as “slowing time around you in order to better dodge an incoming attack”
I would link the spell for context but D&DBeyond is undergoing maintenance at the moment 😔
I prefer story modes, GOW, RDR2, they just can't be beaten
Wow thank you for the info if it will work then that’s great the idea I had was like using a time stop to get a headshot off and leaving them prone for teammates to attack and if an enemy is close by I can like speed away but if it works than that’s great thank you star!
They are good but I love cod all up I should have around 4000 hours
Can't forget minecraft, The all time favorites
I would definitely look at the free Basic Rules, which teach you how to play the game as well as make a character. It also has a compendium of spells that you could peruse through to get inspiration for / plan for your character to take. But in like half an hour or so, since the Basic Rules are part of D&DBeyond so you can’t access them at the moment 😅
Just keep in mind, D&D is not a video game even if video games have been made with its content. It is more cooperative storytelling with limits often defined by dice, than say a combat simulation or single person experience.
I use to play actual DnD games on my Comodore 128 back in the day when it was 5.25 floppy disk games
I think DDO qualifies enough when played with voice
I wish I still had those games today
No video game existing today can really Sim D&D because real D&D is shaped by the DM and players and adapts on the fly to what is happening in game. Computers just aren't there yet.
They are still very enjoyable and can give us a lot of understanding of mechanics though.
Fair point, though when playing text based ai can be a good dm for like 10 minutes
AI is great for ideas and suggestions for DnD sessions but I wouldn’t recommend it for a DM
I know it forgets that a d20 is used in d&d, but it shaped a nice story for me ngl
I use it to make one shots without breaking the game
I have ethical issues with using AI at all, but aside from that, I just don't think the results are that good. AI doesn't know how to connect separate points into a cohesive story or add any personal touch. Its just giving you the average of what other people talk about online, so it is by definition, the most generic results possible
There's a reason people call language models "hallucination machines".
You can share the DnDBeyond URL to the sheet rather then the PDF
I'm a new DM making a campaign for friends and honestly don't have time to make minis nor too many battle maps just having a mat and immagination can a fight still happen withouth i guess the physicality of it ?
If everyone's happy with it, a battle map can be a bunch of squiggles on a piece of paper, and minis can be anything from coins to pieces of candy!
The real battle is in your imagination, after all. Everything else just helps supplement that.
Thanks 🫂
Getting closer! Looks like in this version, you haven't applied your ability score adjustments from your background and you've picked your own equipment.
The scores you've picked look good for a fighter, but you've got to look at the lists of options given for your equipment or make purchases out of the gold amount your class and background award.
ok i’m new to dnd and i already was walked thru part of the process of making a dnd character
What was it you needed help with then?
getting started in the game
like actually playing and stuff
idk if the character is done
is it fine if i dm u a picture of my character sheet images are disabled here
If you made the character on dndbeyond, you can also share the link (provided the character accessibility is set to public).
i made it using a physical sheet
Well you need a dm
i'm in a similar boat as Luna here.
I have a character just out there. He's made and everything. I was in a campaign before, but unfortunately the session disbanded before we really got started.
I want to try again, but idk something about D&D feels a little daunting, a little scary. Where do I really start here. Do i need to make another character?
You don’t have to make a new character! You can reuse them as much as you like
It's always fine to make a character for yourself, as practice.
But once you join a group, that group might have their own character creation rules. So it's often the case that you'll make a new character for that group, or at least adjust a character you've already made.
The hardest part in my opinion would be finding a dm and a party
how do i join a game
Sell your soul to Asmodeus and pray for the best
who is asmodeus
#find-a-game should help you out in that regard
It always feels daunting, I recommend finding an experienced dm who can help you throughout! I was lucky enough that I was already friends with someone who was experienced
It helps to get to know your dm before starting, get a sense of familiarity
It’s a demon in lore ignore that 💀
Finding a group to play a game of D&D has very different methods of going about it ranging from using this discords lfg (see Myriads post above), to going into a game shop in your area and asking around.
iamrazorwing has made a guide that gives a good overview:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
i assume dm stands for something other than direct messages what does it mean
thanks
The person behind the screen you see in media depicting dnd
They plan out the plot for the campaign and the rules, as well as basically everything that happens
Think of them as the story’s narrator
Here's a list of common abbreviations:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary
There's way more than that, the hobby is a big fan of them. 😅
But it's also important to say that this channel and groups that are new player friendly will be happy to answer questions in that regard. A great deal of this complexity is optional.
yeah my first experience was on a complete whim
a friend offered, i was bored. I enjoyed the rag tag nature of the campaign...idk i guess i'm just a little anxious to put myself back out there. I have no clue why
but i'll go see about any dms here
what is roll20 vtt
A virtual tabletop for playing D&D. Lets you make battle maps for the game.
It also supports digital character sheets, rolling dice and moving around tokens
There's a couple of applications like this. The most intuitive one to use is probably Owlbear Rodeo.
how long are dnd games
Depends on the group. 3 to 4 hours seems to be the norm.
That's just one session. In a long adventure you might have many of them.
It refers to the fifth edition of the dungeons and dragons rules. It's the current ruleset.
I dread the DM that has to run a 24 hour D&D game.
egad...that's a thing
8 hours in I'd just hand the players the adventure book and tell them to do it themselves
do you roll for bathroom breaks?
nah
Not every detail needs to be discussed. Hygiene and such is typically just assumed.
And you don't typically roll for anything that doesn't have at least a small chance of failure.
well,
You’d probably level up multiple times over the course of that session.
and lose sleep , but who needs that
For sure. Especially if you start at a low level.
as i newcomer, am i better off looking for a traditional experience or trying out this community thing...which i'm not fully comprehending the difference
Trust me that stuff gets unfunny fast
oh i'm sure lol
People mean different things by it, but community games are usually a less involved experience, more drop-in. This can mean that there is less focus on a particular overarching narrative, bit might also be more suited if you can't often make time for a game.
If you're starting out, I particularly recommend playing one-shots. This means a game that is one and done within one session.
does that still fall under traditional?
Uh, I think so
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
We did a sleepover.... i think we used 20 espresso capsules each by the end.
I hope you bought your DM a new car after that.
I was the dm. And no... just more pain in destroying my plot.
I will try to salvage but they burned the guild hall by accidentaly summoning a fire elemental.
OPPs
hey i'm a first timer just looking at stuff, how much do i need to know before I get started?
i'm guessing i shouldn't accept the friend request from a person who has no messages on the server?
Not a D&D topic but that’s a safe bet to not accept it (and perhaps report it to Discord)
As for how much you need to know... the more the better!
The bare essentials for a player are usually:
- How to make a character
- How ability checks work
- How combat works
Yeah bc i remember seeing that character building was also based off of the world that the DM builds
Hello, I’m looking for help to make my first character. I have an idea for a. Warforged pacifist Cleric
But I’m not exactly sure how to create a character sheet
Have you read through the basic rules yet? They have a step by step guide on how to put your character together.
I also want to know if it’s OK to do a bit of Home brew with my characters backstory so it can exist in any universe
I understand that my character species is naturally only supposed to exist in one universe however I wanna be able to use my character in any universe
That's best to check with your DM first.
Not every DM allows homebrew, and some even limit the options available to you during character creation. Usually, any character you put together before you find a campaign should be considered a "practice character".
Your DM may end up declining it entirely, or requesting specific changes, so it's best if you don't get too attached to a character idea before understanding what kind of campaign you're joining, what your DM allows, and what setting it's in.
OK, thank you
I just kinda find it weird that the species I like playing as can only technically be used in one dimension
By default, that is the case. However, you'll likely find that many DMs allow Warforged in their settings, especially if they run homebrew settings or are experienced DMs. Best of luck to you!
I’m new to DnD, can anyone DM me if they have any campaigns I can join and (maybe) teach me the ropes? I know basically nothing about DnD except it’s an RPG, you use your imagination and there’s dice. That’s about it.

The most reading I’ve ever done in my life is the bad guys book series.
There's also a link to the server's looking for group channels above as well, for after you have a better understanding of how the rules work.
That seems like a lot of reading.
DnD does have a lot of rules!
If you prefer watching videos, the second bot post above has a link to a few tutorial videos as well
But its sooooo worth learning
But no matter what, you'll have to do some reading in order to understand how to play.
DnD is a game of many, many words
I had an amazing dm that helped teach me as we played our first campaign, I honestly recommend that way if you can!
I can’t read I use text to speech Because I’m legally blind
I thought it was just:
I M A G I N A T I O N
Nope
can you tell them to dm me and teach me pls? 🥺
DnD is a game that's played in the imagination, but still has a fairly large and robust set of rules which tell you what you can/can't do in that imaginative space
I would but he's currently taking a break, he had some health issues come up recently
I hope he gets better
Oh- I hope he gets better soon.
Thank you! Me too!!
Welp. Time for me to die of boredom.
Good luck! If you have any specific questions, we can answer them in here as you go through the rules.
I’m going to say this as nicly as possible: most DMs won’t help you if you’re not willing to put in the effort. Aka read the free basic rules, it’s only two chapters that are important plus class.
I'm going to DM a game for my friends and I was wondering what are the essentials cause we wanted to start as soon as possible, nothing too complex and already have a little base knowlodge of the game
…ok now you’ve motivated me.
but I can’t tell if it’s in a good way or a bad way.
Sorry to interrupt a tought string if i do but would it be possible for me to make my character a half-dragon? It states its a template but i kinda take it as a monster?
It is heavily regulated make believe, because make believe is too childish for us.
At a bare minimum, here's what you need to play DnD:
- The free basic rules
- A way to roll dice
- Some free time
- A group of friends
what does that even mean
You could just use the Dragonborn stats and RP it that way.
so you’re saying there’s different types of make believe? Some make believes are more mature than other types of make believes?
Half-Dragon isn't a species in DnD. As mentioned above, Dragonborn is probably the species which comes closest.
Just play a fighter, rouge, or barbarian
They have the least words
My friend said so but i was thinking it could be tied lorewise like a werewolf character
If we understand the character sheets and combat is it enough? Or what else should we know
The more the better, especially as the DM.
That’s something to ask your DM about.
may somebody explain the "choose a gaming set" in dnd beyond character creation ?
What more should the DM know besides sheets and combat
Choose an in universe game you’re really good at.
Problem is... we have multiple dms based on who wants to dm that day because everyone wants to play too.
Dragon chess is the common one.
A gaming set is a tool proficiency that your character is good at. For example, one is playing cards. That means your character is particularly good at card games, like poker. It won't have too much of an impact in game, so pick whatever sounds fun.
i have never played it before
OHHH,ALRIGHT,TYYY
You haven’t, but your character has.
Ask the whole group then.
Or whoever’s DMing on the day.
Ok
I just read some of it, and I’ve already forgot it.
The more the better, as the DM. Understanding ability checks, how combat works, what your players abilities do, and how to run roleplay scenarios are some of the basics.
It's recommend for new DMs to run prewritten adventures, since they help teach the DM how to approach these concepts.
Thankfully, there's no rush. Take your time. Finding a game tends to take a few days to even a few weeks before you're actually playing, so you've got plenty of time to sit back and go through the rules bit by bit.
To be completely honest, I just want to play DND because I saw jaiden play DND and it was cool, and I wanna try it out too. But I didn’t expect this many rules bruh.
theres a GP when im looking in the Lifestyle part, whats that?
You could try a more laid back first. We just used it as a guide in the beginning before then diving deeper
Gold Pieces, ie. Money
Can you elaborate?
I can’t find the instructions channel
Lifestyle describes how much money your character usually spends on a day to day basis on living expenses. Most DMs don't actually use it at all, so pick whatever.
What instructions are you looking for specifically, the looking for group instructions? If so, it's #find-a-game
Can someone help me find a dm to play with

We started a pre written adventure (out of the abyss), then we roleplayed and just rolled dice when we decided it was nessecary. Like insted of having many battle rolls we kinda of had more quickly checks the AC sometimes or once they set up a shield studded with daggers and killed them by making a makeshift spike pit.
Hey yall. Ive played some bg3 and now i really wanna try the real dnd. How much does the Knowledge abt bg3 Translate over to the dnd tabletop game?
I’m still very confused

I will, thanks alot!
It prob gets asked alot, but where can i find like a guideline for newbies?
@timid locust I have been looking and every single one just doesn’t answer or I’m to young to play
Is there like one or several main websites to play tabletop dnd online?
I really do apologize, and I don't mean to imply that your experience was wrong in any way, but recommending new players to use an incorrect set of rules rather than learning the correct rules might not be the best course of action.
There are several programs called Virtual Table Top programs (VTTs) which can help visualize what's going on and allow players to see each other's rolls. Your DM will tell you which one you're using, if you're using one.
I understand. I was more thinking in the way it might be easier to get the hang of it a bit and gradually ease in as it seemed they were kind of frustrated.
Certainly, I know it comes from a good place. But if someone who is learning using a super simplified system is accepted into a normal group that uses the rules correctly, everyone involved will end up even more frustrated
Indeed. But it might help them start and not get overwhelmed and quit.

It seems like it’s just explains how to join a game not how to actually play
Thanks alot
Ah, you're looking for the rules of the actual game. Apologies, I misunderstood. The basic free rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
could i technically give a DM agency over my character by saying they have memory loss lol
Usually a thing to bring up during session zero. Like player agency in certain situations like those
it’s 100% OK I understand I should’ve specified
how hard do I have to memorise the rules before trying to join a group ?
I’m legally blind and I can’t read. Are there any audiobook versions of DND books?
It's good to have a basic understanding of:
- Your character's abilities
- How combat works
- How ability checks work
By the time you're actually playing. Thankfully, you don't need to memorize anything super specifically. You'll always have access to the rules while playing, and you've got all your fellow players and DM to help remind you if you get stuck.
Of the novels: probably.
Of the gamebooks: probably not, but you could potentially ask the players or DM to help you.
Hmm... That I'm not sure of. Maybe someone else here is more familiar and can help, but I haven't been seeing many long-time regulars posting in this channel today.
DMs and players helping others learn the game is nothing new.
OK, thank you for letting me know because like I know that most people end up getting the game books, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to understand them if I can’t read
did play BG3 so I have a slight idea of how stuff works. went with the rules and been finding a lot of similar stuff.
If you’re planning on joining a game, make it clear what your situation is and hopefully you’ll meet people who can work you through it.
BG3 is a great game to get an idea of what the shape of DnD is like, but because it handles most of the rules on the back end (or makes up its own rules at times), it's still important to read through the rules and get a basic understanding on your own.
Also BG3 just completely changes some stuff, lol.
The only tabletop game I’ve played before this is everyone is John at my blind Camp. It was hilarious.
I played a time load with the goal of going back to see every single time
However, I don’t really think my everyone is John knowledge will come in handy
It sounds like a TTRPG, so it’ll have the same gameplay flow.
IDK about audiobooks, but there are digital versions that you can use screen readers with
Yeah, it’s similar except everyone is John. Basically you each take turns being John and each have an individual goal and abilities so say one person dies you then have to decide who will get to be the next John.
Really?
Yes. You can get digital versions of all of the rulebooks on D&D Beyond, as well as other websites.
Nice do they cost any money?
Yes, but they are cheaper than the physical versions
Thankfully, the basic rules are free. While they don't have all the options available for players, the basic rules do contain everything you need to play.
Exactly. The basic rules are free, then you need to pay for the full version as well as any add-on books you may want
Nice and I guess I can learn about the rest of the stuff from just YouTube videos like that’s how I learn a lot about the Warforged
Interesting
Thank you
Guys help i want to make a good back story but dont know where to start
Why did you become the class you are?
What details do you know about your character?
if you're working on your character's backstory, it would be a good idea to ask in #character-discussion
want to play a male elf rogue. He’s pretty cheerful and competitive, likes to have fun, but also enjoys outsmarting people. Not super serious all the time—more of a “smile while stealing your coin pouch” kind of guy.
Why did he adopt that attitude? Who taught him his skills as a rogue? What started the competitive streak?
Also if you have an idea for him for an adventure or campaign, how much do you want your PCs backstory be related to that campaign?
i dont have a campaign yet
A good place to start frome is what do you think happened in his past to shape his traits, maybe grew up in an orphanage with many kids so that made him competitive or he was poor and had to steal so he learned by try and error and things like that
Oh thank you guys you are so helpful
I like always trying to figure out, why they like adventuring
https://youtu.be/p3N3gv1dTr8?si=ByfD5ZjU0KauQMLp good video on how to make a good backstory

welcome
The bot post above has lots of helpful resources to get you started. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here
Does anyone know the name of the high ranking priestess of seldarine?
I can't remember what it is called
When doing online DND do you have to be in voice chat?
Not always, but that's the way it's usually played.
It helps a lot to do voice chat
Rarely, games will allow you to chat via text instead of using voice.
Also rarely, there are some games that are text only. These games are referred to as Play By Post games (PBP).
OK cause I’m not allowed to do voice chat. My parents won’t let me.
That will limit your game options, but it's certainly not impossible to find a game that uses text. I'd put a focus on searching for PBP games, if that's the case.
I will look
Here's a link to Play By Post games specifically, listed on the DnD Beyond website. Hopefully this expands your options a bit! https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post
Never knew that's a thing, seems like finally I found a solution to play with my tight schedule
I presume if your a minor you’ll have a even harder time anyways most games tend to be 18+
I hope I can find one that I can do
Pbp- and west march that have pbp options may be your best bet. But again no garentee since well…
since what?
Im new to the whole DND thing, tips on making a character?

Hey all. New to the server. Been stalking for about half an hour or so (reading), and looks like a great place. I've "player"ed a few games, and get to DM my own some time this late summer, so I'm mostly coming in to listen, learn, and glean.
Please make sure to follow server rules and keep posts appropriate and on topic.
Im in the middle of making a dm game. How much content do people like in the campaigns. Got 2 parts done and wondering if I should add more.
2 parts like 2 encounters
Sounds like a question better suited to #dm-discussion .
Ok
I have no idea how im gonna find GMT posts in #looking-for-players should i just grind how to dm and try to introduce my friends to it ? (I shall bear the curse of the forever dm until the end of time lmao).
Do you know how to use Discord's search function? You can limit your search to specific channels and then use whatever keyword you like, GMT in this case.
But being the DM is one of the quickest routes to having a game!
Yeah ofc its just way easier to be a player. Even more so when you never played a real session in your life 😅
You don't necessarily need to find a game that lists GMT specifically. It's a bit annoying to do constantly but you can search what the time zone of the game would be in GMT and see if that matches a time you can play in
(But I do wish more people actually used the hammer time suggested by the bot, it's really easy to add and makes it so much easier for anyone looking at the post)
Scheduling does tend to be more important than time zone
It doesn't matter what time zone the DM is in as long as it's a time that you can play
And to add not everyone include the time zone, many "10pm" floating around lol
I used to run morning weekday games in my time zone and I'd get all the UK people
are most games 18+?
Probably. Likely due to social/legal reasons.
i see
There's a reason our server rules has a User Safety section that prohibits the soliciting or sharing or personal information such as exact age - because we've had creeps specifically target minors.
So yeah, many folks are cautious for everyone's safety.
That's a good first step!
Yeah it might be fun to get together your friends and run a one-shot (simple, one session game). See if others enjoy it.
Then you could even rotate DMs every session to have someone else give being a Dungeon Master a shot and let everyone have a chance to be a player.
i have a friend whos played about 50 games? I and my friend group made character sheets and they got pretty bored and gave up so we never started the campaign. I had loads of fun tho
If playing with friends doesn't work out, you can see if there's a school club or sessions through a local library or game/hobby shop.
oo yea
we had a dnd club that lasted a year at my school 💀 but theres quite a few relevant shops around
i'll check that out, thanks!
Even if they don't host games there, maybe they can point you in the right direction. Good luck!
i found one pretty close to me :D

I wouldn’t recommend that for you since you are a beginner @fresh cipher . Just stick with a basic character and eventually you will be able to subclass
No but like it's mandatory.
As a rogue, you get a subclass at level 3
Oh you’re starting off at level 3
Mhm
Do you mean specifically on DnD beyond or how do you choose in in general?
On beyond
Like I'm currently looking at the subclass. That I want to equip. I just don't know how to.
It should be on the list of options when building your character. I can send you an image of what I mean

im really into miniatures whats a great first bundle i can get for a campaign?
Folks in #dnd-minis may have some good suggestions
Minis are optional (but yes very fun)
@harsh beacon what kind of miniatures are you looking for
Got blocked because I said I made a character idea but haven't written a backstory yet and they said "I dont think this will work, characters must be connected to the world"
Like that's exactly why I didn't write my backstory what???
Are you able to work with the DM to make a backstory for your character? Unless it is a public setting it is unreasonable for you to have a connected backstory
We haven't spoken about the campaign details yet at all, they just blocked me cus I said I had my characters class and race on a character sheet already
How did you meet this DM? Some context could help
Wanna dm? I don't wanna bring it to a public chat it just frustrated me a little
Sure
I got blocked anyways so it doesn't matter, I was only in talking stage about it so it's fine lol
I just typed here cus I was a little annoyed for a sec but it's whatever
You will find something a lot better than that
I hope so 😁
I'm just tryna have a one shot or anything even but it seems so hard to find a group rn
Are you a new player
im very into fantasy and well modeled ones 32mm and i like sorcery and evil wizards theme or like vampires
Can I PM you @harsh beacon
absolutely
Yeah I've never played the game before lol

Where do i ask?
Just ask here
You can start here but we also have #character-discussion for more in-depth character discussions
Ah okay so im currently making a lvl 5 barb tiefling
Are these scores correct?
Strength 18 (+4) Int 8 (-1)
Dex 14 (+2) Wis 11 (+0)
Con 14 (+2) Cha 10 (+0)
Yes this looks reasonable.
Hellooo, that looks good
Thank you
What's your character name?
She's called vel
Vel... that's cool. So, has your character been in a campaign or a one-shot before?
Yeah she been in a campaign thats still unfinished and a one shot that turned into a two shot
That's awesome! Sounds like she's got some real stories then
Yeah i guess you could say that
I still dont get the roleplaying right while playing dnd
There is no "right" way to roleplay. Funny voices, dressing up, moving minis across a 3d terrain battle map with background audio... all optional and not needed.
All you have to do is tell the DM and table what your character would do in that instant/context - and that's roleplaying.
You are playing the role of your character.
Ah okay thanks

Hey! I’m Dante and I’m like, completely new to D&D. I have no idea how or where to start, so it’d be great if someone could help me out understanding the game better before I even have my first play.
2024 5.5 rogue levelling to 3, with talks of backwards compatibility etc, how exactly would picking swashbuckler work?
No change from before, you get the swashbuckler features. Write them on your sheet.
G'day. You'll find some guides and a link to the Free Rules above.
Thank you. :))

As Mr Smith said. There's no mechanical incompatibility between Swashbuckler's design of old and the '24 version of the Rogue class.
At worst you might have wording of a subclass feature being wonky or not to the higher standards of formatting.
hi, i need a bit of help. i just printed a character sheat and i got stuck at filling in the ability scores. why are there tiny areas within eacht thing? what am i supposed to fill in?
what do i fill in at every thing individualy (strenght, dexterity etc) and what do i di will the small space at the botton of each one of them?
i think that the small thing is a modifyer?
Most people write the score itself in the smaller bubble, and put the modifier in the bigger square.
But either way works.
still, what and how do i fill it in?
You’ll need to get the scores themselves first before you can figure out the modifier.
ookkk...
There’s three official ways to do that. Which you should use depends on your DM.

If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d stick with Standard Array or Point Cost.
Hayo
wel our first dm made up his own rules since no one know how to actualy play dnd. and now because he left the school we either need to make new rules or what i would prefer: learn the offifial ones
I'm new to dnd how can i start :0
I would also recommend the latter.
Do i need to create some sort of character sheet beforehand?
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but if you’ve got any specific questions, fire away!
Alr thankQ sm
I agree that learning the actual rules would be better than learning another set of made-up ones.
ty
And yeah, if you want to join a game as a player (rather than a DM), then you ultimately will need a character sheet.
?tag new sheet
Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether it’s a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
but i need to convince our dm to think the same and THEN i need to make our party adap thery characters to official rules
you would not want to see the document i made for my character. it has nothing to do with actual dnd rules
i tried to make gojo (jjk) but again, he dosent follow dnd rules
Well like do i need to balance my character or smth? :0
i think that custom characters that follow rules and that are ballanced and fine (personal opinion) but that wont work of you dont even know how to make a regular character in the first place
sry astari (i wasent talking to you but yes, you probaly need to balance your character
You can also start with pre-made character sheet, see how everything works mechanicaly, and then create your own stuff.
At least that's how I've started
Uogh okee
hello new player here
If you want have a go at making your own, you'll need a class, species and background. Put your character together a bit at a time, making the choices you need in each section.
Class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Background:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
Species:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions
Welcome all new players
If you are looking for a server to join go to #looking-for-players and there should be some games available for you guys to join
So it's noway i can create a custom charcater
I wanna insett my oc into this game so bad
TwT
whats your oc
yea def can fit into that
kung fu panda could be monk class
Grr
He's a sorcerer
And his weapon is unique
Too
Cannot find it anywhere in the character design site
what kind of weapon is it
A big part of dungeons and dragons is what we call "reflavoring".
It's when you take the mechanics of something and change it's narrative without changing it's mechanics.
For example, if you don't find a weapon that you would like, look for the closest equivalent weapon in the Player's Handbook and then flavor it accordingly.
For example, you could change a shortsword or a longsword to be a katana in the narrative.
So look out for that once you start creating your character. It also helps to talk with your DM about this, once you join a group.
Rock
For working with the free content only, focus on the features of a species. Basically ignore the description part entirely, the goal is to find a species that offers a set of rules that fits with what you want the character to represent.
For instance, using halfling will often get you close enough for many Small-sized beastfolk.
I see :0 thanks alot
Or goliath for bearfolk, use the Stone Giant lineage to represent your extra toughness because you're like a bear person.
Maybe I'll use halfling cuz he's small and soft
Thanks for lemme know what's best :P
Pandafolk would be something great for DnD if it hasn’t been created yet
Kinda like an Ewok from Star Wars
I actually played in a campaign a few years ago with someone that used Custom Lineage from TCOE to make a pandafolk character. Their combat token was a Pancham from pokemon
So it’s possible that @fresh smelt could do that too
Assuming your DM allows that species option, yeah. You do need special permission to play it
I see
Well my boy panda is mainly use physic laws and stuff
Uhh some of his powers are terrafoming and forces manipulation
But there's a huge disadvantage for him
There are some options like that in the Sorcerer and Wizard spell lists. I'd take a look at what they can do to get an idea of what options are available to you.
That is he cannot deal damages to living beings
Please keep in mind that you don’t get to make up your own powers and restrictions when playing D&D. You pick options from lists of pre-made powers, abilities, and spells
You can do that and it’s called non lethal damage @fresh smelt
Uogh... i see
I think that one is going to give you some difficulty. DnD is a game where one of the primary pillars of play is combat. The rest of the group is going to expect you to contribute to combat in some way, and sooner or later you'll likely be expected to deal damage.
Unless you homebrew
Certainly not something I'd recommend to newcomers.
Yea
Advanced roleplay for adults
Have you never had a full healer? I had a guy like that once and his entire kit was casting supporting and healing spells and avoiding damage
Wasn't the worst
I had an ally, he's a life stealer
DND games typically don't let you run 2 characters
I can see @fresh smelt character maybe being afraid of combat
His power is basically sucks life out of something alive to heal himself or other teamates
Yup, i mainly observe and collect knowledges
There might be a spell like that
Not wanna fight nuh uh
They will miss on purpose
Like they close their eyes while in combat and they miss on purpose
Nuh
It is not a good idea to encourage newcomers to play in a way that will hurt the enjoyment of other people at the table. Purposely sabotaging yourself in combat will cause issues for not just yourself, but everyone else as well
He should just explain it to the DM and find one that wants to have him
Like I said, you can’t make up powers and restrictions like this
I think you might want to re-approach your character planning if this is how you currently see yourself playing. DnD is, at its core, a game about defeating horrible monsters and evil villains. There will be combat, usually once a session, and I don't think deciding to just sit by and observe the fight is going to be very interesting for you, or very helpful for the rest of the players.
At this point, I'd recommend you read through the basic rules and get an idea of how the game is played before continuing any further on planning a character. Once you have a better idea of what DnD is, then you will be more prepared to create a character that's more appropriate for this kind of game.
I might look for some already exist sample and learn from them
It would be much better for someone to start off playing D&D in the expected way to learn how to play and what the social expectations of the game are before trying to do something that requires this much buy-in and abnormal play patterns
Or you could just hit the ones that you are in combat against in the head with a blunt end of your weapon
It will be some damage but not enough to kill anyone
If he has friends hes gonna play with or a group that likes his idea of fun then I don't see how it's a issue, I don't believe there's a right or wrong way to play DND as long as you make your intentions clear to the rest of the group before joining and they can politely accept or refuse
If someone finds fun playing as a pacifist I don't see the harm - why should they be pushed into a play style that's not for them?
I agree with that as well
Btw
Well simply because it's a team game. Sure, anything works with the perfect group, but often nowadays you'll be playing with strangers.
Playing something that's fun for you might be detrimental to the rest of the group, or frustrating/difficult to balance for the DM.
I never played with strangers honestly
I can deal damage but in a different way
And like I said, make your intentions clear and then there's no real issue
Well i have a lot of ideas but I'll focus on creating a character rn
I will accept it in my session
I can work with it
Maybe I should help @fresh smelt create the character sheet
Ohh reilly?
I’m very curious about this character
It sounds like Astari needs to go over the basic rules before they work on a character sheet
I can help with that as well
Lets keep the conversation in this channel so we can all help
I guess we all are curious about how this character sheet will turn out to be

the bot post above should help. The Basic Rules are under the Quick Links section
Okie
@fresh smelt so you want to create a pandafolk what
So, the reason why I discourage newcomers from making pacifist characters is because the rules and systems of D&D are designed around a specific style of play. Going outside of the expectations of the game will often result in restrictions, rule bending, and just generally changing the experience of the game into something its not designed for. Its certainly possible, and can be done, but I highly recommend people do NOT make their first character a pacifist, so that they can experience the game as it was designed to be played at least once before they try to bend those expectations
Uh can i send image somewhere? I got a dnd style character sheet rn for you to have a better look
A drawing i made a while ago
You can't send images in this server, but you can upload an image to a hosting website like Imgur, then post a link to the Imgur page in the chat
I sent it to you
Ok
This is not a D&D character sheet
Its probably either a generic one or one for a different game. But it won't work for playing D&D
I'm getting a Fate Accelerated vibe from it, for what it's worth.
Here is a link to a blank D&D 5e character sheet:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Have you read through the basic rules that we linked before? Chapter 2 of the basic rules explains how to fill out a character sheet
Chapter 1 is How to Play, which you should probably read before doing the character sheet
where is this?

sooo, how do i acces it. where is it?
That's perfectly fine. It will take a bit of time to read through the rules even if english was your first language. If you have any questions as you read, feel free to ask them here
Thankss
sry, its just that i dont know nearly anything
I just explained that. The bot post above. The big message posted by Dyno. Click the blue words the say "Basic Rules" under the white title that says "Quick Links"
found it thx, sry i didnt see it
This server does not have voice channels. When you actually play the game, you and your group will set up your own methods of communication. Private discord servers are a popular way to do it, but basically any way to communicate with other people will work.
Hi I've got a question I never played dnd before but i get the MOST of the rules and how to play i kinda want to try being dm cuz it sounds soo cool to be the one giving the setting and i like world building but on the other hand I'VE NEVER PLAYED DND BEFORE I did but on one of those avrae servers w//o dm so i don't rl count that so when it comes to the experience I'm like the most baby of baby dm's there is and ofc I'm not sure if i'd be able to make time regularly so the real issue is idk if i should try to play as a player first in a real dnd game or should i make a oneshot to try things out
Thanks in advance Mingo ;>
Cuz i don't wanna show my voice
If you don't want to voice chat while playing, then you'll want to look for a style of game called "Play-By-Post" (PBP) but that is much less popular than playing over a voice chat, so it will make it harder to actually find a game
Tip: if you're looking for a game played by text, watch for the terms PBP or Play By Post.
That's up to you! Plenty of people have hopped right in and played as the DM for their very first DnD experience. I'm one of them!
But if you want more experience first, there's nothing wrong with being a player first to get a handle on how the game works.
?tag new pbp
new tag command
alr ty good to know there were ppl like me and got of good :> I'll try that oneshot who knows maybe it'll lead to a followup
Using one of the prewritten one shots or adventures is a great way to start! They're usually written specifically to help guide the DM through the DMing process
Yeah, I tried one of those once in an open Avrae server that mentioned it, but it felt rather staged for me... It's hard to explain that feeling, but it felt like I couldn't do shenanigans in it and the part that hooked me on that whole dm stuff was that there would be ppl who would play my fantasies 🥰 i'm all down for my players doing stuff like attacking random person on a busy road whom they never met before just bc they looked funny
There are so much words 💔
yeah, my talkative bit :>
Well, DnD is a game with a lot of rules. Thankfully, you don't need to memorize everything.
from what i got most is counting and dice rolls
yeah. It is a rule book. Don't feel like you need to memorize everything. There will be 4-5 other people in your group that can help you remember things if you forget. Plus, you can always pull out the book and look something up while you are playing
The primary things that we usually recommend new players to focus on are:
- How to create a character
- How dice rolls (D20 tests) work
- How combat works
Wait i need a book to play?!
Sorry typo 😭😭😭
The basic rules are just a digital version of the rule book, so you already have what you need
You can also skim over sections like all the different classes, just to get a general idea of what they do, then actually read in-depth for the ones you think you're interested in.
Uogh oke
Just everything memorised🗿
I would personally say that bullet 2 here should be "how d20 Tests work" but yeah, I agree with this as a whole
Nah just roll the dice and make things up outside of the combat
That's fair, I'll update that for future copy pastes
I don't know if I'd recommend that.
D&D is not just “make up what you want” - it’s a game system with rules. Now different groups will determine how much they stick to those rules but if you go too far away from the rules, it kind of stops being D&D
The rules for the game out of combat are certainly a bit looser than they are in combat, but you still can't exactly just make everything up.
I think it'll work better for random events than making a quest just for players to ignore it
From what I get dnd rules are more of a guide to making a good campaign
It’s a game with core rules and mechanics.
I don't think I'd agree with that.
If you don’t follow those rules, you might as well try a different game with different rules.
The rules in the players handbook are core rules that dictate how the game is played. The rules in the dungeon master's guide are advice and guidelines for running the game smoothly
I'm all ears I'm new here so my description of it might be wrong
Anyway ty lads for explaining and helping me choose much appreciated cya
Oh I've read, some campaign have a session 0 is where ppl discuss about the game and clear things up right?
That's right. It's an opportunity for the DM and the players to make sure everyone has the same expectations about the game, and to set some ground rules for how the game will play.
I see

Hello
Hi Cosmo
I’m making my first ever character and I have a question: are custom backgrounds common? I wanna make my character a shaman
hi i want to share a character sheet i made on roll20 is it possible?
Gotta ask your DM if they'll allow a custom background, and if they'll allow the custom background you make
I don't think I would rely on a DM accepting a custom background without knowing their preferences first.
Instead, you could pick something like Acolyte or Sage and just call it "Shaman".
This is the way.
I'm not familiar with Roll20's options, but if you find a way to share the character sheet, the folks over in #character-discussion will be happy to look at it.
ooo okay got it
thank u both of u 😓 I didn’t know how far I could go with customization
Keep in mind, backgrounds are just a bundle of game mechanics. The names are fairly irrelevant. They come with suggestions of how you can flavor your character to fit that background, but its not at all a requirement. You can pick any background you want, and that doesn't necessarily mean that actually has to be the history of your character. For example, you could pick the Farmer background if you want the tough feat, but still describe your character as a soldier that lives in a city
OHHH
IM SO RELIEVED THEN
I thought it actually dictated ur backstory and everything
Same goes for your class, by the way. Not all wizards wear pointy hats.
I have a question regarding characters. I looked at the rules of the server and the last bullet point in rule 3.5.2 said that low effort art is not allowed here. Since I'm an amateur artist that mainly draws stick figure characters, would that mean that I am not allowed to be here?
If you have a question about the rules of the server, it would probably be best to post that question in #moderator-support so that you can get a direct answer from a moderator instead of a fellow normal user
Okay thanks for the tip.

hellooo 🙂 i am new to this nice to meet you all!!
I bought physical phb, can I get it on DND beyond too, or at a discount?
Unfortunately no, there's no discount for double purchasing the same item.
Ah, will not use DND beyond for its features then. I like my physical copies and won't double pay.
Roll20 it is.
Im new, just wanted to say hi
Welcome to the server!
Thank you :), been into dnd for years now, but tryna get more serious into it 🙂

Can’t figure out how to get a group from the looking for players, even offered money and nothing
I am sure I am about to get banned , it’s just frustrating
for what?
If you're a player hoping to join a game, reply to the ads posted in #looking-for-players. For paid games, reply to the ads in #paid-looking-for-game.
I have, no takers and the 5 people I signed up with for oat just canceled and tried to keep the money, blocked it through my credit card
Pay*
Maybe try somewhere like StartPlaying? It's more reputable for paid games.
It’s frustrating and negative talk gets you banned I am just tired of it
Everyone here just links it to their stsrtpksying account
I had hoped to join a game but it’s been frustrating
did you just look for a game on this server, or in other places?
I hate to but in randomly but my issue i was having was my friends are doing a dnd using the 5ecompanion app but im doing a dragonborn wizard and i have no clue what im doing since i never played dnd
Mostly this server I don’t know others aside from start gaming
well in #looking-for-community , lots of other servers are advertised.
and /lfg on reddit or roll20 also have pretty active communities
You'll wanna check out the sections of the free rules on Playing and Creating a Character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
The guide linked in my bio has tons of avenues to check out.
I don’t understand what looking for community is
It's a server with multiple groups and DMs for drop-in play rather than a single consistent group.
See I don’t want to say how that doesn’t seem to help since I will get banned instantly so I will look more at it since u was hoping to join a campaign- but I don’t want to get banned so I will do what you say I am sorry
its a place where people post their servers for dnd games. if you click on the invide links, you join their servers
A community game takes place in a sort of living world. There's enough players to make up multiple parties, and there are multiple DMs. The specific approach varies, but either the DM says, "I want to run [an adventure] on [day]. Who wants to play then?" Or players get a group together and say, "We want to play [day]. Or maybe explore [location]. Who can run then?"
And the game proceeds, but the actions of one party may affect the world so that the next party's adventure may be impacted by the other party's choices.
But it might not be the same group of players or the same DM. It's more fluid.
The groups might also be in parallel: separate DMs and players, separate stories.
Ok, I will do that, I am sorry
unless you use curse words, slurs or try to make call-out posts, expressing your feelings about a subject are unlikely to get you "instantly banned". We try to give an overview of how moderation works here in our https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1133102807675850924 Rules section.
Constructive conversation is often encouraged here.
I am sorry please don’t ban me
I did not mean to upset anyone I should not have said anything
I am sorry
there is no need to apologize.. you haven't done anything wrong or upset anyone
please take a deep breath. you are fine here
Yes, I will I am sorry I should not have said anything different I am sorry
I will join the LFG it’s my fault, I did not understand
It’s my fault for not understanding, I will adjust my expectations I am sorry
Please don’t ban me I am sorry
I had a friend who loved dnd, they got banned for not staying on topic- it changed them because they where invested in the community a lot- I miss them deeply
I kept meaning to say, your LFG guide is very helpful.. appreciate your putting all that together and for being so helpful with folks.
Thanks so much! I appreciate that, genuinely.
Yes it’s a great guide
My library is for the very deeply disabled and violent, but I have not reached out since about a year ago, they might have more resources separate from the support for the violent
Maybe they have things like in your guide
Worth a shot!
Yes, a lot changed since it was burned down in 2020, it might be better
It was a much more open part of the community before then
It’s just all been so horrible
Just so horrible
Chat can someone here tell me how dnd works? It seems like one of if not the most fun game with near infinite potential and playability. I know nothing so I came to ask

Oooo
That'll depend on the group you join. Most will use one voice service or another.
Voice service? Like different calling apps?
that’s a lot lmao
I think I’m gonna stick to discord 🤤
?tag new online
Thanks
there really is a lot to dnd huh…
Like any hobby, there's a lot of potential depth, but you definitely do not have to engage with all of it!
It's an old game that's had time to grow, so yeah ^^
many role playing games (but not all) tend to feature a lot of rules since the possible scenarios are endless and they want to serve a lot of different fantasies
yes and no.. a lot of the structure sort of repeats across different areas, so once you understand how it works in one place, it makes sense in the other.
Also worthy to note, no one expects folks to memorize everything all at once. Hardly anyone knows absolutely all the content by heart.. but what we do expect is that people put in the effort to learn the basics and get started 🙂
Am I acceptable now ?
I'm afraid we have no idea to what you are referring.. if it's in regards to server compliance/our discord server rules, you can ask to speak to a mod in #moderator-support - if it's in regards to a character sheet or concept, we might need more context to help you out
No I mean I fix my character sheet now I'm just waiting for them to tell me if okay now or not

So i tried looking up some stats for idea and found • Intelligence: 16 (start with a high
Intelligence)
• Constitution: 14 (to boost hit points)
• Dexterity: 13 (for better AC)
• Wisdom: 10
• Charisma: 8
As stats are those good
For what class?
I'm assuming Wizard
Yeah im doing a dragonborn wizard
Dumping CHA is alright, , same for WIS, DEX is fairly important for Initiative so you can get a spell off before you get hit, CON... Is also important, but not for HP; you're a Wizard, your health is always going to be terrible compared to your fellow party members. It's important for Concentration checks. INT is, absolutely, most important.
If you don't know what class to play, here's a video: https://youtu.be/K4YtOhYzOfo?si=jPRG28pdBDUaTrAM
(For context: I have not watched the entire video yet so I don't know if it's accurate; can someone confirm that this is accurate?)
How do I find campaigns to play
On this server specifically, I’d recommend starting in #looking-for-players to see what games are available.
I'm trying to post on #looking-for-dm but... Idk, my brain is stupid. I can't figure out how
If you see one you’re interested in, there’s a thread attached to each post that you can use to discuss it.
But aside from that, #find-a-game and #learn-to-play have a few other suggestions.
You’ll want to check out #find-a-game as well.
Thank you. Reading it now.
Weird question cus I suppose anything goes….do yall ever play games with a medic or well cleric? How does that go?
I suppose not everything has to be combat centric.
Jw!
I'm assuming you mean a Cleric that focuses primarily on healing? I have played with one, and it's alright. This is a bit above a newbie answer, but 5e as a system favors out-of-combat healing over in-combat.
It's generally better to mix in a healthy dose of damage output if you wanted to run a heal-focused character.
Yeah healer based cleric
I assume that’s the best healing class at least. I know that Paladins can do a little but not quite as much and that clerics don’t HAVE to be solely a healer.
I’m not familiar with in game systems or mechanics….what do you mean by 5e favoring out of combat healing? Like a short/long rest?
Any source of healing outside of combat. This is because monster damage tends to heavily outscale healing options especially past early levels.
Ahhh okay! Thank you, that’s cool, makes sense
This doesn't mean you shouldn't heal in combat, it just means you have to be more careful when you do
Strategize more
Indeed. Cleric also gets a bunch of really nice support spells, like Bless.
Advantage for party
It's +1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws
Yeah I’m REALLY new tbh
I don’t know much.
Played a very short game as a paladin….was thinking about trying to make a small gnome trickery cleric….perhaps chaotic neutral depending on other players and DM
Hopefully I find some cool folks and we all get along well.
Bless….1d4 to att n saving throws….seems hella nice!
Thank you for the correction!
I talked to a friend who stated that it was harder to play DND online because of the lack of human connection which all in all tends to bring sessions together cause of the face to face interaction
Just asking if that’s true for some people
Is there a solution for this? Maybe playing with friends only or something
Check your local game stores Facebook group, some have DND advertisment boards where you can show that your looking for players/a DM, there's also some local area DND Facebook groups
If your in a big city you likely can easily get a in person game going
If not, make friends
Also Reddit
There's a ttrpg lfg subreddit that lets you specify your looking for people to play with in person
Welcome!
Hey all! I've played DnD before with some veterans and i just went along for the ride only having certain things explained whenever it was needed. but character creation and sheets and everything was done for me without much explaining.
What's the best way to start learning myself without reading full books? (I have ADHD and can't focus on reading full bookworks 😅 )
I've been watching a few videos so far, as well as talking to other players. Also asking questions here has helped me alot. Also nice nergigante picture
Ah nice, that works. Any channel you recommend? I'm going to play with a few friends who are newbies as well. We hired a DM to run a oneshot to see if we work well together so hope to learn alot from him too.
And thanks! Nergigante is my fav monster
I just talk in dnd discussion but there's a ton of others for specifics. I have a statue figure of nergi on my desk wanna see
i'll have a look around. And YES i want to see
All sent
How in the world does recharge work?
If an ability says it recharges and then shows numbers like 5-6 next to it, it means you roll a 1d6 (six sided dice) and on a 5 or 6, the ability can be used again.
If it were 3-6, then it'd recharge on a 3,4,5 or 6 on the dice so on.
What I’m wondering does it take a turn or?
It rolls at the start of it's turn to see if the ability is recharged. It still otherwise has it's other abilities even if it doesn't recharge.
Ok, that’s what I needed to know thank you 😄

hellooo, I have a question about characters and if you can reuse them once they die in a campaign? and are you able to use them in two ongoing campaigns at once?
You would need to check with your DM & group. Sometimes character death leads to a "bring them back" story arc where the party gathers the necessary resources to have the character brought back through magic like the resurection spell.
Other tables though it may be time to create a new character to join the party.
Might be a bit confusing to have two versions of the same character in two games at once.
The bot post helps alot
This game has alot of rules but u only realy need to k ow the basics and anything directly to do with your character
Do ppl do campaign here?
There are looking for game things here on different channels
I’d love to be included in one. If it’s allowed. I don’t mean to seem like an idiot, trying not to cross any lines here. How would I know if a campaign is about to start? Is there specific timed ones?
The channels that are used for organizing such groups can be found in #find-a-game
It also explains how the process works.
Each group might have their own requirements and preferences. It's a good idea to read the posts carefully.
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
that’s pretty interesting, i haven’t heard of that before
YEA, I was considering that, I think I’ll just stick to creating another character
It ultimately depends on discussion with the player and the dm. My paladin just fought his God after death and was resurrected for his passion and tenacity to fight evil
Can i ask? How long a dnd session last?
I'd say minimum 2hrs.. depends on the DM and what they are running. Mine are usually 3 hours
depends on the game I guess looks at hours played in Marvel Rivals or Dune
you need to remember that its all based around talking.. so instead of loading into a new map and seeing everything visually, the DM has to give you some of those details. Build the world via story
ours usually sit around 4 hours a session a week
My dm'd games generally last 2 hrs maybe 3 if we are having fun. But I sat in on a game that was 8 hrs long one time....I was not a happy player by the end but some enjoy that
Its all based on DM style
Hey guys
Not that games cannot be longer or shorter as length is decided by the participants but a lot of D&D game run 2 to 5 hours.
how do d&d roleplay happen in discord?
oh thanks, kind sir
so we don't host games in this discord.. but we have looking-for channels to help connect folks. #find-a-game can give you the directions for their use
I see, thanks
Can't decide on suggestion or rope trick for my lvl 3 wizard, any opinions on which one to go for?
Suggestion is a great spell no matter what group you're playing with.
Rope trick can be used to do some very, very silly things... but those things can get frustrating pretty quickly depending on your DM.
I'd recommend suggestion.
Rope Trick is incredibly niche, whereas Suggestion is a "soft mind control".
Especially 2024 suggestion which doesn't have the... clunky wording of 'reasonable' that the 2014 version had. I also recommend suggestion. You could pop it on a bandit leader and say "You should sprint away from us" and if they fail, they will, and that would essentially remove them for a small time at least
The only dis/qualifier is "The suggestion must sound achievable and not involve anything that would obviously deal damage to the target or its allies" - so you can't make them betray their allies, but you could make them, say... sabotage an alarm system, or unlock a door, or just... run away.
Fair, thanks for the comments. I was swayed by the video from Pack Tactics on rope trick
While pack tactics and other such videos are fun to watch and think about, I'd usually err on the side of "never actually do this in a real game" for most of them.
Well... Looks like it's not meant to be. I guess I'll go play w bots or smthn 🥲
Bye. Thanks for the guidance 🤝🏽
Bit odd
Hello!
Hello new folks
