- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
A big part of learning to DM well is practice. You get better at improvisation over time.
That said there are some really good tip guides out there. Matt Colville's Running The Game is a good one:

Can I PM you @cedar kelp
Ehm Sure
I’m going to train him how to DM
Dungeon bootcamp
Oh dope
I’m looking forward to teaching him
Hi! I am DMing for the first time with my friends, looking for a good campaign for beginners, and suggestions??
something i can buy on DnD Beyond as a virtual booklet
Curse of Straud is off the table
Lost Mines of Phandelver is a great module to start with
Folks in #dm-discussion can provide suggestions but the starter sets or Lost Mines of Phandelvar is a good begeiner adventure
Yep what FDM noted!
Yes that is the first 5e module that was released for 5e
(note that one or two of the early encounters are super deadly if you run them by the book though, haha)
I actually added the travel from Neverwinter to Phandalin in my campaign
(You gotta have some of the enemies run. The dice can be really unforgiving at levels 1-2)
Oh I like that idea
425 miles so you need to do something for that
Yes everyone that has ever played in my campaign really enjoyed the travel experience
Do you have any materials you like for making travel more engaging/entertaining?
No I actually just make it up myself
May I nudge this discussion over to #dm-discussion
Not brand new (I have 2 campaigns as a player under my belt) but is there anything that is really good that I should try?
Not sure what you're asking for - like character classes to try? Official D&D adventures to play?
Sorry yeah like classes
Hmm,. Have you tried a wild magic sorcerer yet?
clerics are underrated and can be super clutch if ya build em right. (mine is more of a barbarian cleric build lol front line fighter etc etc)
Every class (and subclass) has something fun about them
I haven't but we have one in our current campaign and it seems fun
True I'm a cleric sub class in my current campaign
Haha I like light clerics. Deus Vult
(The cleric you build when you want to blast as much as heal)
Is there any community accepting new players like a new player i have played a few sessions but I would like to get a bit deeper into the game
@astral snow there should be plenty of servers that will accept you
I've been trying to find a session for about a month tbh
Hey guys, im completely new to dnd and know almost nothing about it aside from the concept. Is there any groups that are open to complete beginners that are willing to teach me atleast a little?
This is one reason I play Adventurers League, once you locate one local game, you can snake your way outwards to more in your area until you find your sweet spot. While there is also lots of player demand, most people who do play it, perpetually play it so you often don't need to start from scratch searching again. I haven't had to look for a game since 2017.
@celest stag welcome to DnD and there are many servers that will take a brand new player and train them the basics of DnD
you still looking for a game i am trying to find a couple more players for a campaign i just started because a couple people dropped out due to some family and financle troubles.
When and ya im still looking
Hey ya im still looking and when r the session i would need some info on what to do for the character
Would recommend taking it to private messages. This isn't the channel to solicit games
oh im sorry i thought this was a page for newcomers to find games. my apologies. is there a forum for that?
There is an lfg section available, yes: #find-a-game
I've been doing that for a little over a month. Does anyone look at those?? I am just curious
Many people, from what I've heard. It's just that there is an overwhelming amount of players and not that many DM's.
So DMs may end up getting swamped with messages and can't reply to everyone.
Ok I didnt know or think about that ive just been trying to find a game for a while and it was a bit frustrating which is why I posted in a few channels
I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah it may take a while. You could also consider throwing your net wider than just this discord.
Iamrazorwing put together this doc to give you some pointers:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
People sometimes check the players' posts in #looking-for-dm, but in my experience it's gonna be lot faster to actively post in posts made by DMs in #looking-for-players , than hope a DM sees your player post (Especially if your post is very barebones and tells the DM basically nothing about yourself)
how do DMs set up something for players to join there game?
Hello! This is my first time joining an dnd server im going to be an total noob for a while i get my head around everything
Check out #find-a-game for instructions on making a post like that

Hi, so i have no idea how to play and how to set up a character... is there any way someone can talk me through making one?
Have you looked at the free basic rules ?
Did i miss something or break a rule in some way? I seriously have no idea if so

Not at all, just trying to establish a baseline. The post just above has some handy links. If you pop into the Basic Rules, have a look at the Classes section, tell us what you think might be fun to try.
Alright, thank you! I will have a quick read and get back here
I feel like being a bard could be fun
Okay, cool! Let's do ability scores. This is called the standard array method. You get 8, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15 to put in your scores.
The abilities are:
Strength
Dexterity
Constitution
Intelligence
Wisdom
Charisma
Bards do most of their stuff with Charisma. They also don't tend to use heavy armour, so high Dexterity is good for keeping safe. Go ahead and put some numbers down.
Is it possible to do that on the website?
Yeah you can use the dndbeyond character builder
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a D&D game/group to join. See #find-a-game for more information on how to use those channels.
Soliciting/organizing games outside of the Looking For Game channels is off-topic.
Hello @runic herald DnD is not really a competition game but sometimes there are tournaments where it could be competitive
DnD is a game for a group of players to learn and play together to solve puzzles or situations that the groups end up in
Your main purpose is to make sure that your group survives the campaign or one shot
(and also that everyone playing has fun)
That too
Or they used the word competition instead of campaign
I took it to mean "game"
I think its probably that
Tournaments and Adventure Leagues would be competitive
Some folk ask for a champagne, I never see any bubbly.
lol
Welcome @celest dawn to DnD
welcome
Prepare to do a lot of reading @celest dawn
there's plenty, although there is the 2024 players hand book if you'd like to take a read over it before heading over to #find-a-game
alternatively you can find a group thats willing to teach you as they play
Okay
Hello
You can find the basic rules here. They're free:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
I mean i think it will be easier for me to just watch as they do
Who is willing to help me tho?
Yes most players would rather learn that way
if that's the case there are lots of dnd playthroughs on youtube and live streaming services if that works for you, granted you can find a group and ask if you can watch as well
It might be easier for you, but perhaps not for the group 😄
Most groups will expect you to have read at least the basics.
Is there a group like that?
Can ya send me some links or stuff?
Thank god I found this server
uhh possibly, I'll see if I can find anything but ill dm you
I am so glad
Ofc! Thanks
Yes I do know of some servers that can help you @celest dawn but I will have to PM you

Hello, I'm new to dnd, and am making my first character. I'm trying to make a Wizard. Does anyone have any advice?
Intelligence is key for your spellcasting. Don't neglect Constitution either, it helps you keep your concentration spells going. Shield can be a lifesaver, make sure it's on your list.
I'm using Dnd Beyond, and I have a Tiefling Wizard with Fire Bolt, Mage Hand, and Shield, but I'm not sure what Fiendish Legacy I should do.
This tends to be more of a #character-discussion or ##optimization question, but generally, it should be whatever you want to play or looks interesting to you. Fiendish legacy choices are relatively minor mechanics wise.
Thank you

Not really a newcomers but I just got the 2024 players hand book. How different does it read?
It’s like a polish-up/clarification updates and updating the game rules to better align with how the community plays D&D 5e.
That’s why it really isn’t a new edition - mechanically not much changed at all.
Well im glad Goliath is in the base book now. I hated looking up on the internet every time I wanted to play 1
Hello guys! I'm totally new to dnd, I'm learning the player rules and creating my character (I'll need a bit of help with that); I plan to join a campaign and have fun

Did you make your character already?
I made mine through DND beyond but that's really it
oh ok
How far have you gotten?
with the rules I've seen some tutorials and started reading the basic player rule manual, with the character I'm doing it from scratch following the character sheet
Cool. Picked a class, species, background?
so far I got the name, class, specie and some points in strength, intelligence , etc.
not finished yet
A work in progress. Do check in if you get stuck anywhere.
something I haven't understood yet is how to distribute ability points evenly/correctly
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Standard array, described above, is recommended for new folks, just to get the hang of character creation!
THANKS!
Hiii
I'm just looking through the channels now haha how do any of you get into this before getting overwhelmed
Do you remember the last time you learned something new? You didn't absorb every nuance and detail all at once! That's not how we learn!
So there are multiple ways in, to my mind.
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules one chapter at a time.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
Take it at your own pace. No one eats an elephant in one bite!
Haha thank you
Hello to all of the new players who have joined DnD today
And also hello to everyone else on here
hii :)
Do you have a question @knotty pendant
Hello! It's nice to meet you all ♥
You too
I wanted to ask something to any DMs reading this! Do you guys ever run those pre-made campaigns? Is it fun for you?
I'm looking to learn how to DM and I know pre-made campaigns are popular but I'm not sure what the DM is really doing if all the encounters and items and stuff are already pre-written
Yes I prefer the modules if you aren’t ready to run your own world yet
The players don't know what the module contains, so they still make choices that surprise you. Plus, the DM is free to change anything in the module to better suit the table, but it's much less work tweaking an exisiting module than building an adventure from scratch.
That makes sense!
Besides which, running a game is a separate (but related) skill from designing an adventure.
Cutting your teeth on a pre-made lets you build up one set of muscle instead of trying to do both at once (to mix metaphors).
I’ve been around DnD for almost 36 years now and I still don’t have a world of my own created
So I just stick to modules
I honestly find modules harder to run than homebrew.
Oh that's fair, I'm a writer and roleplayer first and foremost so writing a world is most of the fun to me! I guess I didn't consider some people are less about that
Thankyou guys for the responses! <3
Since you are a writer anyway @deep sierra you shouldn’t have any trouble writing your own world
Yeah I'm more struggling with what to give my players as rewards, just gold is boring
But knowing some rules about DnD will help you to understand it better
I write, but world-building is dead boring to me. Having a baseline helps, even if I adjust.
If you wanna ask for help brainstorming rewards, you want #dm-discussion!
I know that there are some websites where you can find treasure rewards
That's fair! Thankyou !!
We aren’t allowed to put them in here though because they aren’t part of Wizards of the Coast
That's not true. Linking to external sites is fine so long as it isn't piracy and includes appropriate context.
I just say Google it and see the websites for yourself
Hello! I’m new too!
Welcome to DnD @hollow barn
Thank you!
None at the moment :)) I’ll reach out if I do though! I think the thing I’m struggling with in terms of DnD is just finding a group of people who want to play haha
does this game get any easier when I play it. The instructiinstructions are a lot on leveling up. I went through the beginners videos so far
Yes that shouldn’t be hard to do but the problem is that there aren’t enough DMs or Dungeon Masters
It does get a lot easier the longer you play DnD @summer spindle
That’s a good point! I don’t mind being a DM, I just live in an area where there isn’t that many people haha
You know that most DMs are from the middle of nowhere
ok will continue reading .instructions. see yall when I have more questions
Finding groups can be a hassle, but asking around helps
As with anything, practice helps
Yeah, that’s what I’m finding 😔 I did just join a discord server for a local game store that I’ve heard does DnD sessions!
Ah nice
😂 they spawn from nowhere
hello everyone
Howdy!
how are you!
Hey, I've only really played casually and don't think my character would be appropriate for a proper game so need some advice on what I need to do
Oh? What kind of character are they?
Try #character-discussion for character build feedback and suggestions
Thank you I shall pop something in there 🙂
what are the healing classes. Im after somethin unusual and the rogue class seems best with halfling. But that's common
There are pockets of Healing. Even Sorceror has a specialty that isn't a bad healer.
If one truly wants to build an all around fixer upper Healer though, probably Cleric. Healing is less important than damage. Even the best healers will struggle in a party with weak damage.
Re: Rogue, any species can be fine.
The issue with halfling is they lack Darkvision so they are not as good at doing stealth things.
ahh. I'm after stealth. Maybe and elf thethen
and cunning almost forgot that
dwarves had that stone ability. Would it be effective often
Sure. Your character. Whatever you want to play. Every choice has pluses and minuses. And there really aren't any truly wrong species.
Having flaws and shortcomings can make a character more interesting
Don’t make a Mary sue
IIm a devious cricritter. I enjoy devious critters and dwarves and elves seem perfect
is having a normal childhood considered rare?
No
yeah
Traumatic back stories are a meme
actually dramatic stories are more boring than they sound.
AAt least when it comes to childhood. Not war and stuff like that
It's kind of funny that so many PCs are in such bad need of therapy.
Who needs therapy when you have a battleaxe
Sometimes, people worry that if there is no trauma, there's no reason to bother with them or their character; which really sucks
the battlefiemight
Just surprised so few people seem to want to write happy things in back stories. Always with the unresolved issues and trauma.
Happy characters catch SO much flak they don't deserve
I've made it a point to make more well-adjusted/happy characters (with actual relatives) more recently
I miss my happy-go-lucky gay bat necromancer now...
Only a handful of them actually fit the orphan loner trope, cause you really don't need it to have fun with a characte
the orc just loves battle. He lived a boring life and was sent on a adventure for combat and such
im mostly here because I wanna pursue author in a different direction. Have fun with it
what happens with my character when I finish a game. This doesn't feel like the type of game where we go back to level 1
you character just exists... maybe a epilogue for after the adventure but yeah your character exists afterwards
In most cases, they would get retired. Maybe the DM would continue another story with the same characters, but it's not guaranteed
Unless you've been doing organized play, in which case you can just keep playing the same character forever if you want
ok. Nice to know. So unless properly planned I only get 6 free games.
I’m going to take a wild guess and assume by 6 free games you’re referring to the 6 character limit on D&DBeyond
yes absolutely right
you can delete the characters you know
like if youre not using that character ever again you can delete them
Yeah I recommend exporting unused/finished characters to PDF if you wanted to save them and to open up slots
Otherwise, well, making sheets manually gives you as many characters as you have paper
but ain't after your first 6 characters you have to pay for another at that point even if you deleted the previous
If you have 6 characters on DDB specifically yeah
But if you delete one you make room for another character
Yeah, it shouldn't be 6 ever. Just 6 total
ahh. Good to know.
of course I can understand the extra books costing money. I'll wait for a job on that
If you don’t mind learning how to fill in sheets manually and want paid content without paying for it I recommend checking your local library; many in my experience have 5e books
huh. Will do. That's all for me on questions

my guess is it stems from d&d being escapism for a lot of people, and the ability to combat and deal with those issues in game is cathartic
would anyone EST be willing to help me make a d&d one shot tmr? i have a plot but idk how to make the characters, encounters, bosses etc.
How familiar are you with DnD? There are tools online that can help design encounters.
ive played a ton but have never dmed
i feel like i could honestly wing it but i fear
There is a free encounter builder on DnD Beyond that can help
is it paywalled
like aspects of it
ik you said free but i domt trust wizards of the coast to do things for free
It will give you Difficulty measurements based on Size and Level. Only stay blocks are paywalled, any monster can be used, even homebrew
huge thank you beautiful
Even I am surprised at how accessible it is for free

Hey uhh question. Can you use any character even characters that are OCs that you've had for a long time?
That's going to depend on the game (though I wouldn't expect it)
I would say generally not. Character creation is described in the rules, and those options determine what your character can do. Not knowing those means you've probably made characters who don't fit the D&D mold.
Wdym mold?
For example, if you have an OC that doesn't match any of the D&D classes
If you're just using a personality, sure. That's probably doable. But if you expect to be able to use abilities/powers, it's likely going to be a much more difficult adjustment
What are all the classes?
They're described in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
(sorry if I'm asking too many questions I'm just excited to learn and I've never played)
That's what the channel is for!
But honestly if I were to choose a class I would choose Rogue
If that's the case, you can come up with a new idea for who your rogue would be or you could adjust one of your other character ideas to abide by what the rogue can do according to the game rules.
Don't rules vary for each DM?
Usually more in granular details than the broad strokes. Plenty of people play very close to rules as written.
That doesn't really answer my question
The rules are more consistent across tables rather than varying in major ways.
So most rules stay the same?
Exactly.
The DM will tell us the rules before we start right?
Very likely, or if there are any major deviations.
(again sorry if I'm asking too much I'm just very new to this)
The base rules should be the same. The DM should tell you if they have any adjustments, but it's not completely different every time
Is there any YouTube video that simply just explains how to make a character sheet?
I'm sure there are several if not many YouTube videos that cover making a character in D&D
Ginny Di's video might be what you're after: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkJjy7WwrVM
Thx
Yeah I've never played so I could use some help with trying to get stuff together
Iam new to dnd so like whilst I try to find a game and people to play with what should I be doing, making a character or watching YouTube vids on how to play?
Why not both?
Okay any specific YouTubers ?
Ginny Di has a lot of pragmatic advice and tends to not exaggerate the way lots of other D&D YouTube does. Start there. I'm sure the algorithm will send more your way.
Okay another question how exactly do I try to find games ?

Hello everyone

I would love to learn dnd and play
now I don't know. I've watched how to create a character. Understand except for the stats. So confusing to me.me. what does wisdom do.
im I the middle of trying to learn it right now
I believe something like intelligence but instead of just being smart it's understandable of something so let's say you're a rogue with wisdom vs intelligence, Wisdom is about awareness and instincts — rogues use it for spotting traps, sensing danger, and reading people. Intelligence is about logic and knowledge — helpful for investigating clues, solving puzzles, or using magic as an Arcane Trickster. A rogue with high Wisdom is street-smart and alert, while a rogue with high Intelligence is analytical and clever. Most rogues rely more on Wisdom unless their build or backstory leans into Intelligence-based skills.
AAhh
Better
yes. Actually planned on doing rogue first
I have one set up in DND beyond I just need people and a dm
IIll join. But I got to create a character. Also don't know the rules that we'll
I don't even know how start a game in beyond
K
still on part 2 of character. Bonds and personal stuff. Want a level 1 character
I'm lvl 1
working on equipment now
Just @ me when done @summer spindle
When a character sheet says +5 to hit does that mean add to the dice roll or does it mean they have to roll a 5 or higher?
Do you need help making your character?
Add to dice rolls
No worries
Ok nice I have been prepping and have been running solo encounters
Somehow I have been completing 3 PC VS. 3 Zombies only took 15 minutes
It feels awfully quick though
Is it normal for it to be that short?
DnD combat can take a while, depending on how focused players are and how complex the battle is (ie, level). Also the average party is 4-5 players.
But in short, yes, that is quicker than average
Hi
Hello
So how should I prep for combat? Do like the final boss battle with 4 3 level pc vs sparkrender (dragons of storm wreck isle)
You mentioned you are playing solo, correct?
By prepping do you mean you are DMing a game, but you are simulating the battles beforehand?
Yes that is what I’m doing, I am aware that it won’t be the same cause my players may be random. But I want to feel experienced at the combat
I'm just looking for a get started

There shouldn't be too much to prep, considering it is a pre-made campaign. Just prepare for different outcomes and if your players are new tell them to prepare for their turns beforehand to speed things up.

Ok.
Hello all. I’ve never played D&D and am joining an adventure league this Sunday at my local game shop for beginners. I was planning on using a pregenerated character. Any tips or suggestions for learning how to play? I’m very overwhelmed. Thank you!
Are you familiar with the basics of DnD?
Nope!

Wow thank you!
These links can give you an overview of the core concepts and rules of DnD. Dont worry about having to know everything, your DM and fellow players can help guide you
Thanks so much.
Do you want some help on deciding what kind of character you want? There are many diverse options
Please if that’s not too much trouble!
Do you know what the classes are?
I do for the most part.
Any that you find interesting?
Hmmm all I can say is I’ve always been a tank/fighter/paladin type of player in every rpg video game I have played (like baldurs gate 3 for example).
I like heavy armor sword and shield
Paladin is a good choice for new players it offers a bit of martal and spellcasting
Ok thanks that’s what I was leaning towards.
As you might be aware, Baldurs Gate is heavily based on the DnD 5e ruleset, so character creation is almost identical. That should help you figure out what character you want.
Ok great.
There are two Paladin PreGens on DnD Beyond. I can send you the links if you want
Please!
Do most people use that app instead of pen and paper? I love the feel of physical things.
Plenty still use Pen and Paper,
Great
You can print out these pregens or copy them on a paper character sheet so you can edit it when needed
Ok great.
Is adventure league a one shot as they call it? Do I continue with this character? They said something about starting at level 5?
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Oh great thank you.
It is a very consistent way to play DnD
Ok so if I show up with this pregen character sheet will they mostly help me with the rest or should I make sure to read all those links pretty extensively first?
If it is a beginner friendly group, they should definitely be up to helping you out.
Thanks again!
Of course it is expected that you at least familiarize yourslef with the basics of the ruels and your character
I sent them in Direct Message
Awesome sorry.
Specifically for AL, you'll want to read the ALPG (Adventurers League Players Guide) and make sure your character complies, including logging any sessions or actions beyond your base Level 1 or Level 5 characters. We can point you to it in #adventurers-league.
The pregens have to follow AL rules (as per ALPG) or they won't be accepted. Not all available pregens are created to be compatible with AL.
Can someone explain crossbows to me? I get they have ammo. So let’s say you have a +1 crossbow and ammo that’s also + 1. Ignoring everything else if you use the +1 crossbow with the plus +1 ammo do you have +2 now? Orrrr?
Got it thank you for the info!
Yes, if used together, you would add +1 from the weapon and +1 from the Ammunition to both to-hit rolls and damage rolls with the net effect of being +2.
Can a plus 1 cross bow use like pkus 2 ammo?
Of course.
RAW to back up:
Weapon, +1: You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Ammunition, +1: You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this piece of magic ammunition.
Nothing in either magic item description conflicts with the other and both are used in the same attack made.
Just keep in mind, magical ammunition is destroyed upon hitting a target. Unless you find a truckload of the stuff, having both bonuses is really going to be rather infrequent based on how magic items usually are placed in published content.
hey so I'm looking to play dnd online for the first time and I'm really confused where to start. is there a way to find a causal beginner friendly game where i can learn the basics, like some kind of practice session, im nervous to start but i want to try
You can start by following the instructions in #find-a-game as that's the only way games are suppose to be found on this server.
However, for a casual beginner friendly game to learn basics, as intimidating as it might seem at first, you may find it easier in person. I've found people learn the basics in a fraction of the time if they do it in person, and game stores that host D&D are often happy to get new players (I mean, they have some self interest as it's more potential customers for them) and are likely to either have new player days, can show your the basis themselves, or can point you at whoever runs locally for them. It might not be in all gaming stores, but it's a great place to find because you're likely to get opportunities to play going forward as well. & if they tell you run Adventurers League, you may have just hit the jackpot for an ongoing regular game you'll be able to attend.
I’m magically hoping 20k pkus 3 bolts appear by my bed roll after a long rest

As a reminder we actually don't host/run D&D games on this server (it's just the official D&D Discord server and is focused on discussing D&D - check #channel-guide to see all our many channels for specific D&D topics!). You can use our Looking For Game channels to find a group to play with - read #find-a-game for more info on how to use the LFG channels.
Welcome to the server!
F you are looking for games check out #find-a-game or Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
what’s the most basic type of campaign I can play as a newcomer
and where might I find that
for finding #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community
Someone running a module like Phandelver, perhaps.
there are official starting campaigns released such as "Dragon of icespire peak" but preferable in general would be a campaign that start at lvl 1
There’s been three official starter sets, specifically designed for new players and DM’s:
- The Lost Mines of Phandelver
- Dragon of Icespire Peak
- Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
And a new one, Heroes of the Borderlands, releases next month.
so like how do you play online though? like just hop in a voice call andd do that? im familiar with dnd beyond and the campaign shit but how you communicate
However your group wants to communicate.
If your group wants to do a voice chat, go for it.
If you want to use Discord or Zoom or Teams or whatever, the choice is yours.
Some groups play through text instead.
i see, how do you recommend finding people to play with
I’d start by looking through the available games in #looking-for-players.
But #find-a-game and #learn-to-play have some more suggestion.
i see, is there like an age limit people put on
Make sure to follow server rules and don't share exact age or other information that can be used to personally identify you in real life or be used to scam you.
oh dayum mb twin
Many online games tend to be 18+ due to social/cultural and legal issues surrounding minors.
Just ask the organiser if it is okay
Yeah discuss it with the Dungeon Master (DM) - many groups are fine with new to D&D players and some will be open to playing with a minor but it's always good to check.
helow everyone, i need a bit of help. our dnd party is prety new to dnd so our first dm may or may not have made his own set of rules in mind. and now in our seacond campain i made my character around those rules (dw, our dm aproved everything about my character). but now that our old dm needed to leave and never actualy left behind any manual for HIS hules, i think our new dm wants to use the official rules for combat. can anyone help me make a copy of my character ability document with official rules in mind? I know that this also isnt how dnd is playd but our dm allowed us to make our characters and abilitys ourselvs. Can anybody look through my document and change anything that wouldnt make sense in a real dnd game?
The best place for a question like this is #character-discussion if you want to make a legitimate DnD character. I want to give you fair warning though, you will likely be forced to make a lot of concessions to what your character is capable of doing.
If you're looking to make a character with completely homebrew abilities / class, then #homebrew is the channel for you. Though fair warning for here, this will be a considerably, considerably larger undertaking than you might realize.
i am aware, but i still want to have a back up incase our dm decides to learn actual dnd rules
ty for directions!
I understand putting the little line for finding a game. But I'm also kind of new to discord so I don't really know where to put it
You can run the command in any channel where you have permission to type a message. Type /looking and select the option you want.
What channel did you choose to post in?
this one
I mean which "looking for" channel did you pick?
looking for players
Then it would be in #looking-for-players, though I don't see a post from you there.
Yo
Welcome to the official D&D Discor server ran by Wizards of the Coast! If you're new to D&D we suggest checking out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel for useful resources to help get you started. Feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them.
I would say no, especially because natural 1s on skill checks are not auto-fails per the rules.
A natural 1 only matters on an attack roll or a death save.
Per the rules of the game, there are no extra negative effects for rolling a nat 1 on any ability checks. Its not even an automatic failure. If the player has a high enough bonus, they can still succeed on the check.
If you're asking for DMing advice outside the normal rules, then it would probably be better to ask in #dm-discussion. You can get advice from fellow DMs in that channel
Though my general advice would be no, because critical fumbles are something that I find deeply unpleasant and as a player, ruin the game for me. It's something I will literally leave tables over. Rolling a 1 is bad enough without adding extra penalties.
If you really want to do it, I would recommend asking the whole table first, and allowing for people to change their mind if they decide they hate it later on
Hello there! So I am a really, really new DND player who wants to try out a game, but I find all the rules and extra things that need to be done a bit overwhelming. It doesn't help how I love everything organised perfectly but can only find small snippets of stuff off YouTube that don't actually make any sense for me. Can anyone please help to explain to me some of the basics of the game 🙏. If not, then could you give me a link or a document which is for public to view so I could read or attempt to watch up on it?
Sorry if this sounds like too much but I've been interested in DND for over a year but just can't understand anything in general.
You should go to #find-a-game for more info but feel free to ask here if that route seem to much
hey, you can find for free the basic dnd5e 2014 rules here at least: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014?srsltid=AfmBOoruRS3kFxFEHbfg2SuSIZouJFykzhTxHlq-vrzIkmy-okG4VenC
dnd does have quite a bit of rules and you can find probably some explenation videos on youtube if you search something like: "dnd 5e basic rules" etc. but otherwise there is no "easy way out" lol, you just have to read the rules from here yourself. reading little by little does help if you dont wanna read that much all at once. and ofc the best way after figuring out a bit of the rules is just by playing and making mistakes! 👍 theres so many rules that you can remember everything at once
The 2024 free rules are available here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
also to add: dnd 5e = aka dungeons and dragons 5th edition is the most common/second most recent version of dnd, which what the very large majority of people play (there was last year a small update to some of the rules which is why some people refer to it as dnd5e 2014 version) but fundamentally its still the same.
Also imo the dnd 5e is the easiest game/version of the most to learn as a completely new person (having looked/read through about 7 different tabletop games/versions myself)
Remember to keep LFG inside the #looking-for channels! Unfortunately soliciting games outside of those is against the server rules
darn it
welp, was worth a try
The proper way to explore the world is to find out what the rules are as you break them
or you could read the server rules before you do something that could get you in trouble? lol
You don’t get inspiration for a month now
What level do I have to be to have plant growth for a spell
Check your class list and then check what spells it has on it's list and then see at what level your class gains spell slots capaable of casting that spell.
Sorry don't have the info on hand right now
Its ok
Depends on the plant, you can have a flower grow with druidcaft from the start. For plant growth since its a level 3 spell you need at least lvl 5 Druid or Bard, or lvl 9 Ranger
Ohhh ok
Alternatively speak to the DM to see if you can get it beforehand for any rp reason because laws are tangible based on mutual consensus
Ok tysm for information im new to dnd lol I kinda understand a little bit
Hi guy im the newest of noobs to DnD and there seem to be so much to learn it's a little overwelming. Any suggestions on where to start?
#learn-to-play has a bunch of other helpful starter info as well.
I'm going to a DND let's play camp in August with my bf. He's the reason I started playing and he had played before. I haven't. I have the starters guide book but it's all allot and I don't know what to do. Is there any way that there are like things I can skip and that I can learn while playing that I don't need to learn beforehand? I don't want to be the kid that asks a question every minute or every turn.😆😥
It is possible to learn some things as you go, but you will have a much better experience with the game if you take some time to learn at least the basics of the rules before you start playing. At the very least, you will need a character before the game starts, so learning the rules on Character Creation is basically mandatory. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go.
If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do.
You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
You'll definitely want to go through chapter 1 and the Rules Glossary in the Basic Rules.
Beyond that, you only really need to know what's relevant to your character.
If you're a Bard, you don't need know how Druids work.
If your character doesn't have any spells, you don't need to know how spellcasting works.
And, if you forget anything, there will be 5-6 people at the table with you to remind you. Plus you can always pull out the book while playing. That's totally normal
Of course. I'm not going in blindly. Thank you I'll make a character (rough lines) cause the first day of the week it's character creations. It's a learning camp but I don't want to like ask everything 😄 thank you
The other bit of advice I'd offer here is that if you're ever unsure what to do, just focus on intent. "How can I help this person?" or "How can I stop this monster?" Once your group knows where you're trying to go, they can help you get there.
Okey thank you all for the help.
Oh that's great then! If I'm being completely honest with you, that message I sent was copy and pasted. We get a lot of newcomers that ask if they can start playing without reading the rules, so I have this response prepared for that. It does seem like you're in good shape, especially if you're doing a learning camp where someone that's more expirienced with the game can guide you through it
Of course I get that the question gets asked allot but I'm grateful for every bit of help I can get thank you so so much, even if it's copy past, it helped and I'm sure it'll help in the future 😄
Help me out. Joining a game for curse of strahd. Need to figure out where is the world of ravenloft a high elf noble would be from. I don't know a lot about the world and I'm have a hard time finding city maps of the places I've looked up so far. Google foo is strong but I'm struggling with this one lol
There's only like 3 towns in the entire place and ||high elves aren't very common|| so probably best to discuss with the DM tbh
You could always be a high elf noble from another part of the world. And you are going to Ravenloft for negotiations or a deal of some kind
It's the campaign curse of strahd so DM is just as clueless about it as I am lol it's his first time running it.
The book generally assumes that the adventurers aren't from Ravenloft itself.
You can refer the DM to "Adventure Hooks" at the end of chapter 1 for some suggestions.
||In the event that begins the adventure, the fates of Strahd and the adventurers are entwined as the characters are invited or forced into his domain. Different ways to get the adventurers to Barovia are described in the sections that follow. Use whichever one you favor.||
What campaign book would you recommend for a new dm?
The starter kits are all designed specifically for new DMs/players.
lost mines of phandelver and dragon of icespire peak are popular beginner ones :)
ik im forgetting a 3rd one
Lost Mines of Phandelver was the first, followed by Dragon of Icespire Peak.
The current one is Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
thats the fella
Ok thanks both of you
And the newest one, Heroes of the Borderlands, comes out in September.
how long does it take someone to respond in looking for players. I just commented asking that I could do one
says anyone's welcome hope I don't blunder to much
Depends entirely on who you're dealing with.
I would personally expect most DMs to reply within 24 hrs.
And if they hadn't replied within 48, I probably wouldn't join that game.
Do i still count as being new to dnd if ive only ever played 1 one shot and 2 campaigns that only made it to 2 sessions then fell apart/disbanded?
Eh, it's more a matter of "How well do you know the game fundamentals?" to determine if you're new or not.
can someone help me learn to play d&d ive never played and someone gave me a sheat of a character and also some dice

is it necessary to be fluent in english?
That ultimately depends on the table you play with. Folks do play in other languages, but they can be harder to find.
What language would you prefer to play in?
Georgian
but well i dont think there will be any Georgian table
so English I suppose
Why is Bard listed as high difficulty
Maybe this Facebook group will help? https://www.facebook.com/groups/1465313487293267
I'm guessing here, but I suspect it's because they don't get much defense, they have a limited (and eclectic) spell list without the ability to change their spells daily, and their support role is maybe a little more nuanced than straight damage or whatever.

huh? how did u do that?

i guess I can. play in my native language + irl on this Monday because of you thanks
Very glad to hear!
btw can you give me tips how to interact with people at the very start? do I give a lot of info about me or step by step?
Standard social introductions - typically name and what got you interested in D&D. Then as the game begins you'll likely go over the ground rules for what's acceptable at the game table as far as behavior/topics. Then possibly how your character fits into the adventuring party.
hey im super new to dnd and i dont know where to start i know the basic rules and have a character but i cant find a group

Hey, I'm very new to DND and don't understand how the DC is determined. Can someone please explain?
DM makes it up, or there's a rule for it. DC for what?
It doesn't - DC is for spell save DCs or skill checks usually.
Armor Class is what you roll to hit against with an Attack roll.
If your attack roll (D20 + modifiers and bonuses) is equal to or greater than the AC, you hit.
Also note that on an attack roll if you roll a natural 20, you automatically hit as this is considered a critical hit.
This allows you to roll the damage dice twice.
And then there is it's opposite with rolling a natural 1 and you automatically miss.
Like advantage?
Advantage is where you roll the D20 twice and take the highest roll.
Disadvantage is where you roll the D20 twice and take the lower roll.
Critical hit damage is just rolling the normal damage dice twice and adding it all up.
Hey, im completely new to dnd, anyone knows how i can get a character sheet?
Yep you can download a fillable PDF character sheet here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
You can also use DnDBeyond to create a digital character sheet (DnDBeyond also has a mobile app).
Awesome
You'll only be able to use the free materials unless you purchase the books on DnDBeyond or are part of a DnDBeyond campaign that has content sharing enabled and that book material is being shared.
Is there a way i can play d&d on discord?
When you're ready to find a group to play D&D with, check out #find-a-game
Awesome ill try to play tmrw as soon as possible

Hate to break it to you but it won’t be that quick finding a game/group takes time

It depends on day to day
Yup

can i add ya kuro?
Yeah if you want
Hi
hello
Never even seen anything abt it?
I think Kuro refers to the link above.
Well some about it but not that much that will give me the info on how to play
Any questions about it we can help with?
Not in but maybe when I'm done reading
Oh gotcha yeah
sal you new to or no?
I've been playing on and off for 5ish years
oh cool i have played three games
I played a lot in highschool but then after I never got to organize with my friends a time and place so I haven't played recently at all
have you played dm before?
Yeah, I usually do actually
could you hear me out on something?
Sure
what if you could host a game for newcomers
ok good to know
Depends when you got time tbh
All day for the next week except sunday
As a heads up, you should move any discussion about setting up games for private messages or the lfg channels ( #find-a-game ), as this isn't the channel to solicit games
Yeah I figured so
ok
Thanks btw
K
Id also like to play with yall, but ive never played D&D before
Nice
Welcome to the hobby! It's the most fun you can have with your brain.
Heck yeah, ive heard its a lot of fun
That is until you have too many dice and nowhere to keep them
lol
Ah yes, the Dice Goblin curse is an unfortunate side effect of the hobby.
I didn't even have as many but I enherited so many dice and ttrpg books idk where to store it all
Guys are warlocks any good?
any class can be good if it’s fun for you and you focus on what their good at :3
I love me some eldritch blast
It can take a lot longer than that to find a group, cast a wide net and be patient.
I'm just looking for something basic but everything I see is for people with experience or have a age rating 🙃
They will be restrictions, there are games out there, anecdotally there seem to be more players than DM's. So unless you are willing to pay for a game, you have to wait until you can find one that fits.
Happy Hunting.
Happy doesn't exist currently
A good idea might be to go on one of the community games servers, they will usually have simpler games for beginners and people to help if needed
@candid elk ok ill check that thanks
Top advice TBH.
hiii
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Good Morning.
was anyone else looking at the newcomer icon on a phone and thinking that it was a soyjak
HI. Im trying to run sunless citadel as the first session for my group and im borrowing encounter and stats block from the internet and i don't know what "nc kobold" mean. so what is "nc kobold"?
Probably Non-Combatant
ohhh alright thank you. that's why there's 24 of them
Oh yeah that would make sense lol
Hello people
so i’m genuinely completely new to the concept of D&D. I’ve loved to fancy based things my entire life and have played fantasy games so I kind of have a bit of background knowledge. how do I even begin?

Adding to what the other person said
I would recommend learning alot about how to play a certain class before trying to find a group
Not necessarily alot, but how they work and what they do in combat. I would also reccomed playing a Barbarian, Rogue or Fighter as they are pretty easy to play.
so how do I start playing DnD? like I want a party but still don't know how
I want to be a player
and the instructions didn't help much
Would you like some help with putting a character together?

thanks! will try and hope will get in a party
so when I go in #looking-for-players do I DM the one that makes the party and ask him if I can join?
Yep or use the thread attached to the post
ok thanks!
Roll for their initiative, slot them into the order. If their turn has already passed in the round, they have to wait for the next one.
Hey, hope everyone is having a good day today. I'm wondering if anyone would like to play D&D. Although I've never played before, it seems like a lot, but I'd like to give it a try and gain some experience.
This might help: #dnd-newcomers message
I’m new to dnd and I’m trying to learn so someone suggested a start a club at school. So I plan on trying to do that with a friend when it starts up again. Until then, I figured I’d do more research on how to make characters and such. I’m trying to use paper since it’s easier for me. Where would I be able to find a character sheet I can print out that works well. I’ve been looking on google but all of them say something different and I don’t know which to use
Welcome! You might want to check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here for useful info/resources to help get you started.
theres the official one just give that a go
Thank you
Yeah and Syrus posted the official D&D PDF character sheet that you can either fill in electronically or print out and fill in with pencil/pen.
What is the inspiration section on the character sheet?
Some race/species get inspiration every day but otherwise a DM can reward players with inspiration for good role play, good player behavior, funny moments, or other things. Inspiration allows the player to use it to reroll any dice roll.
Ohhh ok
Put a token in the box when you have it, take it out when you spend it.
Note that Inspiration you either have or do not have. If you do not use it, you cannot gain more although if you earn one, you can give it to someone else.
I saw that it wasn’t a required thing to use in a game, so if I set up a campaign I may just not use it until I understand it better
Oh, Heroic Inspiration is great, don't "not use it".
It's a great tool the DM can use to help reward good player behavior
You want players who lean into the game and help everyone have a good time and rewarding them with inspiration can help reinforce that behavior.
You can use it for any d20 test, but commonly people use it when they really want to succeed on something, often a failed saving throw.
As DM, you give your players a chance to get one extra chance on something as a reward for seeing things you want to see them do at your table. Players can really go off script on you and this can help limit them being motivated to throw you curveball headaches to deal with.
-# but really though... it's only a matter of time before you prep a whole thing and your party just nopes out. Somewhat just a part of DMing. Players have choice.
I was just thinking about the fact that I’d try to be a DM unless I find someone with more experience on it than me. And the fact I suck at role play. What I meant with ‘not use it til I understand it” is I’m probably going to be looking it up more and figuring out how to give it. So I will use it eventually, but until I fully understand I’ll be holding off on it. But I do have a few weeks until I even try setting something up at my school so I’ll probably understand it by then and use it
Role play can be as "simple" as just describing what the character is doing. Don't have to do voices, don't have to put it in "their" words, just say, "The blacksmith snorts at your comment, picks up their hammer, and says again, that will be 10 gold for the dagger."
Nah if you don't put on elf ears and hold an actual staff are you even playing the game right. (jk jk)
How do u guys play a serious bard
or play a bard in a serious campaign
Being a bard puts me automatically in tomfoolery mode
Bard doesn't necessarily need to be a fool type. You can be a storyteller, dancer, artist. Really anything that can inspire your allies.
Anyone makes overlays ?
could check over in #dnd-advertisements to see if any artists are advertising that service
i made a character almost a year ago and now i want to make sure everything is good can anyone help with that ?
I can take a look at it in DM's if you'd like
If you’d like feedback you can post it here or in #character-discussion !
What’s the best class?
kk thx alot
The one you find the most fun
There's no objectively best class as they all fulfill a certain role
Alright well any good ideas for a multi class with a warlock
Cause my dnd party wanted to start multiclassing and idk how
We don’t usually recommend multiclassing for newbies. Not because it’s too complicated (the rules are here) but because it’s one of the easiest ways to make a character ineffective if you don’t know what you’re doing
I second this
Ok thank you
If you want to multiclass, it’s best to figure out what you want mechanically out of a multiclass
do you have to multiclass?, do you want to?
The simplest multi-classes for a Warlock are those that also use CHA as a main stat, i.e., Paladins, Sorcerers. But you can multi-class anything if you can fit what the multi-class gives you in to your own build and have the minimum of 13 in the required stats.
I came from another dnd server and the people there are awful. They will absolutely beat down verbally on anyone who talks positively about certain classes. Play whatever class interests you the most and that you have the most fun with
In essence, multiclassing should be a thing you know you want to do for a goal, not a goal in and of itself
I would echo Omegon's somewhat unstated sentiment. You shouldn't feel obligated to multiclass because others are doing it. There are tradeoffs and a character you understand better and want to play will play better than any, some rando on the internet told me this was a good idea character.
do personal charcteristics effect any stat ? or is it just to let people know what my character is like ?
It's mainly just flavor and how you roleplay your character, it's personality

Thank you, just got my very first set of dice.
so are orginazation's a thing or i can type what ever name i want ? or is it related to the campaign and should talk with the dm about the world ?
That's probably something to speak with your DM about.
Hello, I'm somewhat new to D&D as I played a bit over a year ago and now I am thinking on getting back into the game
G'day. Useful links in the Dyno post just above, #channel-guide to get oriented. Welcome aboard.
i really wanna play D&D but i have like no time
is there a way to work around my busy schedule
Maybe check for play by post/text games
Iirc play by posts are at your own pace? Or some of them Are
Oh yeah, play by play
I am new, I would like to get into some of the west marches thing, but not sure how
I’m going to be honest. I have played dnd for 4 years and idk what a westmarch campaign is and at this point I’m too afraid to ask
It can happen a number of ways, but in short:
- Multiple DMs run multiple games for a large pool of players.
- Players that can play, don't always play with the same players.
- The campaigns (so all the individual adventures) all exist within one setting, so there's an expectation that PCs will have some shared experiences (and will also miss out on some direct experiences, too).
Turns out I knew what they are I just didn’t know they were called westmarch campaigns
Ty
Can someone explain to me what the pros and cons of multi classing are?
Cuz I plan to multi class once I’m able to for the campaign I’m in but I wanna make sure if I fully wanna multi class in case their are some downsides
Pros - you can get abilities you wouldn't have otherwise
Cons - you miss out on abilities from your original class/delay getting higher level abilities
Ah ok yeah those are some big ones
Do note that beginners are discouraged from mulit-classing, due to the difficulty of making a good multiclass.
There are rules you need a stat of 13 or higher for x class
Sometimes surprises people when they realize there is no minimum stat for single class. Throws people off that only the single class can dump main stat.
Hey I'm thinking of making a rogue as my first character. Is the rogue class beginner friendly?
It is! It has fewer rules to learn compared with many other classes.
Plus, you generally don't have to worry about managing resources.
wdym good?
oh i dont have to worry about that i rolled good for those
You can easily make your character less effective through multi-classing than if you'd just stuck with a single class.
hi new player here, i have little experience playing the game, i have played a few one shots but nothing more than a couple of hours, would it be best for me to keep doing one shots to gain experience or is it okay for me to try and join a long term game?

That's up to you. Personally, I would think of it less as "I need to get the right amount of experience before I join a long-term game" and more "I need to find a group I'd like to play with for the next few weeks/months/years."
In short, I think compatibility among the folks at the table is a bigger factor to decide whether a long-term game is a good move.
thank you so much, i have been looking for anyone to play with and i hope i can find some people soon!
There are tons of avenues. #find-a-game has info for using this server's channels to find folks to play with, and the link in my bio has a lengthy rundown of other places to look.
Yeah, people you will enjoy being around is important.
No D&D is usually better than bad D&D.
thank you both!
Good luck and happy adventuring.
i’ll be sure to take a look thank you
Hi so I am new and I never played dnd before but I have seen several dnd campaigns, my favorite class has always been the bard but I wonder if it is too complicated for someone who never played before?
Hello
There is a steeper learning curve to the spellcasting classes, but you're probably better served by playing something "more complex" that you're excited by rather than something simpler but doesn't look like fun to you.
So if bard is your jam, go for it.
thanks!
I have never actually played a campaign or a one-shot before, but I've been watching videos, I created my first character (to the best of my ability) and I've even been trying to learn how to set up my own scenarios, but I need to get into a game. Idk where or how to start

Okay I shall try that but idk how to dm so I shall need to learn 😭
Some of that should get you started with some basics for DMing.
Anyone know a cool dnd play through with miniatures I’m new to dnd and really admire the miniature and also want to watch a campaign

hi!
I'd like to ask, is there any way to make first dm'ing easier? like i want to try dnd with my friends, but all of us are totaly green, and i jsut cant get into making it, how to make some sort of map? I tried to use roll20, but only i got lost
any tips?
Check out these posts for some help there: #dnd-newcomers message
Also there are plenty of pre written modules that give you everything you need to dm and play
i think i just got lost in that site, and couldnt find any good tutorials
i think maybe, since it's a test i just improv most of things? learn how fighting works, and make some "maps" just for fights so they can visualise battlefield better?
For game flow and for some guidance, I can recommend Peril in Pinebrook. It's made especially for brand new DMs to run new players through a short adventure and explains the very basics:
https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf?icid_medium=ddb&icid_source=article-1625&icid_campaign=free-intro&icid_content=peril-in-pinebrook
It strips out some of the more advanced rules to make it easier to grok.
Note that it doesn't include any maps. If you want to draw up some of them, like the dragon dungeon, you can do so. Often you can also find some that other people made with a websearch.
There's also the DM advice in the Free Rules which starts here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
The help action can't be used on someone doing the dodge action, right
You can, but the Help action does not benefit the dodge action
The Help action simply gives the helped creature advantage on their next ability check (with a chosen skill/tool) or their next attack roll
So help can be used outside combat
The Dodge action only has effects that interact with what a targeting creature rolls, not the targeted creature
To search a room for example
And yes pretty much every action can be used inside and outside of combat unless the action says otherwise
Remember as per the text using the Help action to assist an ally with a skill check (e.g. an Intelligence (Investigation) check to search a room) will require:
- DM approval for you to be capable of assistance
- You to have proficiency in the relevant skill/tool
so to help a person search a room u need to be proficient in perception, i guess
At least by the book
If your DM calls for a Wisdom (Perception) check, yes
To use the help action, yes, but you could just do your own search. In effect, both result in one extra d20 but your personal search would just have a different modifier.
The advantage of advantage (heh) is that you have the party member with the best modifier leading the search and a trained helper giving them the extra d20 to roll for best results.
I was thinking "man getting advantage is rare" I guess it makes more sense now
Hi guys I'm new to this so hope I can learn from you
So after seeing that wild shape for druids have fraction cr what is 1/4 cr?
It's just a lower cr. Below 1, it goes up in these steps:
0, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, then 1. From 1 on, it goes up normally.
Me looking in lf players in abject horror (i live in gmt time zone) :
Yeah when i do the conversion and realize i have to come at times likes 11pm or even 2-3am it hurts
Yeah, while international representation is growing, a lot of postings are by DMs in US & Canada. (The times you are describing are evening ish for east/west coast NA folks.)
As more DMs post here, it will get better but it can be rough in the meantime.
Also GMT, and yet I've played with Americans, Australians and everything in between. Cast your net wide.
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
I am brand new to D&D and I guess I am already in over my head. Help!
I am on D&D Beyond, I know how to create a character. I have several of them. But the whole game platform is so new to me.

Does anyone know what a west march type campaign means?
Many DMs, parties form up for sessions out of whoever is available, it's a way to play if you don't have a regular schedule you can keep but at the cost of missing a continuous campaign.

You're in the official Discord server for D&D. What would you like to know?
Well you see I'm also new to DND too and I don't know where to start
Common practice is to try bolting a character together. You'll need a class, background and species, all found in the Free Rules linked above.
How can I join a game?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Hiya im totally new to this but ive played a bunch of DnD style video games(Baldurs Gate, Solasta, ect) and enjoy making characters and lore. I have an idea for a fun character i think would be enjoyable to play but dont know what version of dnd i should learn to try and get into a game. Any advice would be dope Thanks
Fifth edition is the current edition of D&D. They did a rules update last year and you'll likely find more and more people playing that version, so that's probably your best bet. It also does a decent job of onboarding newer players. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Thanks a ton
I've done create my character sheet : https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/cassthenecromancer_148886121.pdf
What is next should I do ?
I go so basic in order to not get overwhelmed ( which I actually did get overwhelmed )
Think you need another look at your ability scores there. Try starting with these numbers: 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15. As that kind of fighter you'll want Strength and Constitution to be the highest.
Also for your first go I'd advise against picking custom for your background. Soldier is a solid choice for a fighter, but the others all have their uses.
I have played dnd 1 time but we only did two sessions before we stopped because the dm was new and gave up and I’m just seeing if anybody would like to do a new campaign I can join in
#looking-for-players is the place to go
Sadly it happens more often, the issue of online games is people don’t feel the need to speak out if there are issues and ghost people, or lie
Okay I haven’t played since like the end of last year and I’m trying to get back into it

I’ll join but sadly I can’t do in person
Its online???

Welcome, new bloods
Is there any free dms here cuz me and my group of friend's are in need of one
I'd offer to play with/DM for anyone in need, but I made a promise not to spread myself too thin this year, and im sort of already playing 3-4 times a week mostly DMing. 😅
But I at the least, dont mind helping anyone out. Obviously, there are many in the community the same way.

Looks like the same link and the same sheet.
The custom background was what I suggested you replace with soldier (or another preset option).

Theoretically could a bard use their music as a healing factor for the group?
The bard's Song of Healing sort of does this anyway, and you can flavor any spell to include the use of music.
bards can learn spells that provide healing as well.. so there is that too
you mind me dming you? I might be able to help you with that!
