Hello
im doing dnd beyond and im confused
Hey Nicki
Also, invincible. And what’s confusing
Hey, what’s confusing?
ah the modifiers
what does that do, im level 1 and should i mess with it
i wouldnt reccomend, it changes the numbers to what you want it to be
ok
I just made a cleric and I didn’t because she is level 1, but my Ranger has kept her straight from the beginning I never mess with them.
unless its a homebrew point system for some campaign
Never mess with them
You roll and pick where you want them to go.
or point buy
Leave em and you get your levels through campaigns.
what is ability scores
and why does putting bonus on it lower my hitpoint son constitution
If your ability score is lower thaqn 10, you will have a negative modifer
That modifier is applied to things like ability checks and saves
no
because i added to it on points
went from 8 to 4
ok
so my character quotes the bible in every situation
thats gonna be fun
Prox have you read the free basic rules? Many of the many questions you asked tonight were in the rules. It’s important to read the basics and follow along with them.
can someone explain the "To Hit" part of my character sheet?
im a little confused about it
Your ""to-hit" is the same as your attack bonus for any given attack you might have
so if my to hit was 13, it would be 1d10+13?
Attack bonus, not damage bonus
oh so i dont miss?
So if your attack bonus was +13, when you would go to make an attack roll you would roll 1d20 then add 13
You might still potentially miss
ah isee
If you roll a 1 on an attack roll, that's a critical failure and is an automatic miss regardless of AC
If your roll total is less than the target's AC you also miss.
Yup
so if the AC was like 15 and i rolled 1d20+13 and got like a 18 it'd be good
Yup, to hit an AC of 15 with a +13 attack bonus you would need to roll at least a 2 on the d20
Though, attack bonuses that high are normally only found at later levels of play, ~Level 14 or higher
and then AFTER i'd roll my damage correct
Yup!
can you tell math was never my expertise
It's alright, the attack vs damage roll system can certainly be confusing
well good thing my first campaign has us start at level 14
thrown straight into the deep end LOL
Hi all! I don't mean to interrupt, I'm new in this server was curious if anyone knew of a good know-it-all/step-by-step website to learn about dice rolling, calculations, and character sheets? Ty : )

Normally I would not recommend a newbie to start any higher than level 3, but if you want to start at level 14 my best recommendation is to not make a level 14 character right out the gate. Make a level 1 first, then slowly level them up as you read through the features. This is mainly to make sure you aren't hit immediately with dozens of features
Welcome! I recommend checking out the Basic Rules, linked in the Dyno post above as well as the newbie resources in #learn-to-play
Thankfully, the Basic Rules (which are free) covers exactly what you are looking for
Oh, thank you! : )
There’s two websites I’ve used for making characters. That I’m aware of. Roll 20 and D&D beyond
Perfect :> thank you guys for the pointers
Hey 👋, I have a fun character idea, I've used roll 20 a bit, and I'm looking for a weekday night campaign. Any recommendations? Discords?
Check out #find-a-game
Definitely check out #looking-for-players
Lots of characters are bards.
The folks in #character-discussion could give you a few recommendations.
I hate to break it to you, But games generaly are 18+ for a multitude of reasons mainly to protect minors form content not ment for them or creeps. D&D Is kinda morwe please with adults since thats the main demographic.
There are some games that allow regardless of age how ever those are extreamly rare
Does anyone know of a group for new people? I’m trying to find someone else to play with but everyone wants $$ and I don’t got any lmao
#looking-for-players has posts listed with only free games
what is a saving throw btw
A roll to avoid something, often damage. You would roll a d20 and add the modifier of whatever save it is, so dexterity saving throw would be rolling a d20 and adding your dexterity modifier, and proficiency bonus if you're proficient
In D&D, most things are not certain, and are either behind an attack roll (attacking creature makes the roll) or saving throw (creature forces their target to make a throw, with whatever effect they are trying to force are either weakend or negated on a successful save
For example, a Fireball -spell forces all creatures in its radius to make a Dexterity saving throw, dealing full damage to any creature that fails its saving throw, or half damage to any creature that succeeds
so if its a constitution save and i have a bonus of +1 on the stat it goes to the save
Yep

Hello new folks., if you haven’t already, check out the links the bot posted. Great way to start to learn D&D
I just made my first proper character what now
He's a dragonborn sorcerer
Criminal
Read Chapter 1 once to get the gist of it (don't even try to remember it all at this stage).
Then, probably look for a game.

Is there any single player campaigns (free) for dnd beyond?
Cus I'd like to start with one
D&D is usually not played as a video game in that it usually has at least 2 participants, a Dungeon Master and at least 1 player.
To your question though, to my knowledge, D&D Beyond does not have any content geared specifically to single player games.
Traditionally, D&D is player with 1 Dungeon Master and 4 players. Almost all the content in the game is balanced for this setup.
Cool
Dragonborns are really cool they where what I picked 1st time as well
Some random question about loading property, relocated to
#dnd-rules message.
#dnd-rules is the place for rules clarifications.
Not an expert but the way I see it is that if u use a loading wepon u can only make an attack with it once per tern
that is incorrect
Oh my bad man, didn't even think of that channel, I'll relocate
can you have higher ability score than 20?
Not by default, no.
But there are exceptions!
There are certain items and features which allow you to increase beyond 20, both temporarily and permanently
kind of a late reply but you can join ours! Theres like 1-2 days left give or take before the campaign
can a trait that lets say gives me a +2 strength, bypass that?
Only if it specifically says it can
oh i just read the last part... "You gain a +2 in your Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores. These same scores increase by +1 at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th levels. In addition, your ability score limit is increased to 40."
For example, the Barbarian’s capstone ability.
I’m going to take a guess and assume you’re looking at a homebrew source
ye
Since ability scores have a hard cap of 30
I don't recognize at that ability at all. It sounds like homebrew (which means some person on the internet just made it up)
I would highly recommend not using homebrew at all, as a new player.
why? too complicated?
Think of homebrew as adding extra rules onto an already pre-existing game. If someone you know came up to you and said "Wanna play Monopoly, but I've added a bunch of new rules to it", you might say yes if you know that person well, and if you know they're good at making stuff up.
But if they're a stranger, or if they've never even played monopoly before, you might probably say no
Similarly, if you haven't played DnD before, don't worry about trying to homebrew stuff. Get some experience under your belt first.
(But the second reason is that homebrew tends to be poorly balanced, and this particular ability sounds VERY poorly balanced.)
Using homebrew before you learn how to play the base game is like modifying a car's engine before you learn to drive, or designing a balance patch for a video game before you play it
about that "homebrew tends to be poorly balanced", while scrolling earlier in this homebrew rulebook i found a class called warrior while i was reading through some of its abillity i found out that at level 20 it can attack 5 times in one turn
...I'm kinda confused on what are community games or whatever it's called
It's hard to judge exactly what makes a class balanced or not without the full context. This makes it especially hard for new players to tell if something is broken. In general, stick to the free rules while you're just starting out.
A community could be a server with multiple DMs and players, or just a server with a large pool of players rather than a single consistent group. It's not a term with a strict definition.
can someone who knows how to play illusion type mages in dnd guide me on how it works if I want to play as a mirror mage who conjures mirror clones and such with a haunted origin?
Well, let's talk this through here. The idea of creating fake versions of yourself is pretty limited in DnD. Illusions in general have some pretty unreliable utility in combat.
I think the two things that spring to mind first are the Illusionist Wizard and the Trickster Cleric.
The former gets the most utility out of out-of-combat illusions, and the latter gets the most use of a single in-combat illusion.
Since this is the newcomer channel, I’m not going to assume anything, so let’s start with the absolute basics. In D&D, character creation involves picking your class, subclass, spells, feats, etc from pre-determined lists. You don’t get get make up powers. So if you have a very specific theme in mind for your character, you’ll need to find something in the official rules that best matches that theme. I think the two suggestions that DOSH made are both very good for this. There’s a few spells you could pick that match what you’re looking for, but not many. If you feel comfortable with it, you could try reflavoring some of the existing spells and such. If you’re reflavoring something, you can’t change any of the game mechanics of how it works, like damage type or damage dice, but you can change the explanation of what a spell looks like. For example, if you cast the Fireball spell, rather than having it be a big ball of fire, you could describe it as reality shattering like glass around a point and the intense heat of infinity burning the targets before the world repairs itself. The targets still make a dex save and still take 8d6 fire damage, but now it feels more like a spell a mirror mage would use

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Choose Standard Array. Then each score will have a set of drop-down numbers. Arrange them as you like.
The bot post above has a bit more information about how ability scores are calculated
Out of curiosity though, did you read through the basic rules before trying to make your character? Its obviously going to make it a lot harder to make a character if you don't know the rules or the process
The process is described here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character

Awesome, i’ll dm you with a few questions
does tavernbrawler feat for a monk use dexterity? and other "use your strength modifier" feats?
Tavern Brawler:
Enhanced Unarmed Strike. When you hit with your Unarmed Strike and deal damage, you can deal Bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 plus your Strength modifier instead of the normal damage of an Unarmed Strike.
Monks:
Dexterous Attacks. You can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier for the attack and damage rolls of your Unarmed Strikes and Monk weapons
The "enhanced unarmed strike" from Tavern Brawler is still considered to be an unarmed strike, so yes, a monk can use their dexterity modifier instead of their strength modifier for the attack made that way. Though it would be odd of a monk to choose to use "enhanced unarmed strikes" since 1d4+dex is lower than the normal unarmed strikes they make with their martial arts die at level 1 of 1d6+dex

Hey everyone! I am currently building a Ranger for my campaign and I was wondering how Crossbow expert works. It says that you can fire an additional attack, as long as you attacked with a one hand weapon. So I need to always use hand crossbows to make that worth it, right?
Also, I read that rangers are supposed to get multiattack on lvl 11. Im lvl 12 but on D&D Beyond I dont get that option. Is that an old rule?
Thanks for the help in advance!
does tavern brawler have a size requirement for the push? (comparing it to crusher crusher specifically says can only push 1 size larger but tavern has 0 mention of size)
at least in the level up feat descriptions
Hey, I need help with my first build tonight. It's with a bunch of my firefighter co-workers and they like to play and joke around a lot. They also do not have a healer 😑. That being said, I want a real janky healer build. Something where I can cause some chaos, even better if I can just make it happen to one specific player. Wild magic sorcerer and alchemy artificer came up but I don't know how well they would be at healing or making one particular player feel pain. Thanks in advance.
Wild Magic Sorcerer doesn't have access to healing spells but Alchmist does get Healing Word. If you're looking at Sorcerer, you may want to check our Divine Soul Sorcerer. Probably a conversation for #character-discussion
Push. When you hit a creature with an Unarmed Strike as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can deal damage to the target and also push it 5 feet away from you. You can use this benefit only once per turn.
The feat does not say that it has a size requirement, so it does not. You can push any creature you with with an unarmed strike (as part of the attack action)
dissonant whispers a good one
one more question tavern brawler says reroll 1 dmg unarmed strikes flurry of blows count?
i think im gonna use it
Damage Rerolls. Whenever you roll a damage die for your Unarmed Strike, you can reroll the die if it rolls a 1, and you must use the new roll.
Flurry of Blows. You can expend 1 Focus Point to make two Unarmed Strikes as a Bonus Action.
Yes. The attacks made via Flurry of Blows are unarmed strikes, so the Damage Roll benefits of Tavern Brawler would apply to that as well
ok cool so tavern is basically the same push effect but has to be only with the primary action but then the reroll is with all dmg done by any unarmed strike no matter if its bonus or regular action
correct

If I push an enemy away from an ally who is within 5ft does my ally get an opportunity attack?
The official answer based off of the rules is no, because forced movement does not count
No, that's forced movement which doesn't provoke opportunity attacks
You can move your friend out of the way
Spells that make the enemy willingly move, like suggestion, command, dissonant whispers will provoke an opportunity attack though
But this could also depend on the dm, because not all dms play exactly to the rules
yo can we run some
like a begginer party
so we could all learn at the same time
ill be happy to host it
i have some dm experience
You'll need to take any group making to private messages or #find-a-game channels

hi ho
Morning
so if i'm lvl 8
does that mean whenever i short rest
i can use up to 8 hit dice for healing?
You could, but then you wouldn't have any hit dice left if you tried to short rest again.
Yes
After you've spent hit dice, you don't get them back until you take a long rest.
ok what if i heal and it's over my max hp? do i get temporary hp?
and do i have to add Cons for EACH dice?
Temporary hp is always specified, normal healing that is over the Max is always wasted.
Yes
Should a priest have to take the religion skill to know about their own religion?
Yes you can struggle to remember things sometimes
Nah bro, just have an atheistic priest
Is atheism a religion? I once played a atheist character who told priest they were just deluded mages
From a purely technical standpoint, your DM decides when you should / shouldn't roll for an ability check. If the DM decides that your priest knows everything about their own religion, then no check needed. Just like how someone saying "I'm going to pick up this chair" probably doesn't involve an athletics check.
Remember that an ability check represents a challenge, or something with a meaningful chance of failure.
Tell that to DMs who use constantly ask for perception checks instead of investigation ones 😄
y
99.9% of the time, this is true, and how most people play the game, but more for your awareness rather than any newcomers, the 2024 rules actually facilitate ways that PCs can call for their own ability checks if they want to accomplish something
Whereas I see the reverse problem. I see a lot of people calling for Investigation where the RAW literally calls for Perception.
well, atheism in D&D settings is typically just... ignorance, or outright delusion.
However, Mythic Odysseys of Theros introduced me to the concept of an Iconoclast, a person who doesn't believe the gods are worthy or deserving of worship. That ideology is better suited than outright disbelieving a widely known and thoroughly proven and evident truth.
I mean it’s not a large logical jump to define the gods as just mortals so powerful they can’t be touched.
Yeah the book defines them as gods, but a PC can still believe it.
if i use trip attack from battlemaster
and i also got the nat 20
does that mean i double the roll of the trip attack too?
or only the base attack
The superiority die is also doubled.

Alright ur thank you
thinking of runnig my own custom campaign for tyhe first time. how does one go about organizing the events and characters and such. shoul di just make a google doc or what
Can I join?
Just a heads up that this channel isn't for recruiting for games. It's for new players to get help while they learn the rules.
hi guys, relatively new player here going to my first public one-shot next week (only played a short campaign with friends before), and i'm a bit unsure how to approach building a character. I'm trying to come up with an archetype that i'd like to play as a basis, but every concept I come up with is not related to combat or the mechanical side of the game, and I'm not sure how to proceed from there
What kind of archetype did you have in mind? Like do you want to be a tank, high damage, healer, support, etc?
so that's kind of the thing, nothing that springs to mind starts from there
it's more theatrical/roleplay archetypes like boy detective, dedicated butler, sleazy merchant type thing
so i'm not sure how to approach that or transition that to an actual character in dnd terms
There's nothing that really translates into those archetypes as far as classes go, because that's all roleplay flavoring
But I'd maybe recommend bard because that kinda flavor I can imagine on a bard. They're highly Charismatic characters that are all about utility
It may not be a beginner friendly class but that would fit the roleplay in my opinion
A beginner friendly class I'd recommend is rogue. They're a bit more handy than fighter and will let you get more of a taste of D&D
noted
i guess I just find it difficult to think of something I want to play mechanically, but I'll try starting from there
Once you play a game, you'll probably figure out from there what kinda gameplay mechanical archetype you wanna play
fair
One approach I’ve seen helpful for newbies is to make their first character inspired by (though not a replica of) one of their favorite fictional characters
That's very true. When I first played d&d and knew basically nothing about it. I said that I wanted to play a sneaky thief assassin like ezio from assassin's creed (that was my hyper fixation at the time) and then the DM said "just play rogue then"
You go with whatever works since there's no single approach that applies to everyone. Some good advice in the community is start small (so don't design a whole world, make a town and the immediate area around it) and create problems for your players to solve, letting them figure out the solutions instead of preparing for every possibility.
#dm-discussion and #dm-world-building would be where to get into the nitty gritty, depending on your question.
Yea my general idea rn is a time loop so working In a small area should be pretty easy
It's a cool idea—I'm playing in a game like that now—but it's genuinely tricky to translate into D&D.
There is a part in a adventure I’m in that includes a time loop mechanic. There is a limit befor the loop resets and we tpk and start again and again. It was quite amusing
How to clam the weapon aura?
Huh?
gotta thank you for the suggestion - i had the stereotypical newbie view on bards, but there's more to the class than i thought
immediately got inspired once i actually read it
Ok just bought the books. Players guides etc. haven’t played in years. But ready to kick start
Heck ya Bill!!!!
I am guessing you won't have much luck as it is RARE to get that to happen BUT more importantly, feel free to check out #find-a-game and follow the easy instructions to find games or post what you are looking for
Hey I'm looking for a beginner friendly campaign cus I stopped playing for years and I'm trying to get back into it any recommendations?
To run as a DM or be a player in?

With the exception of maybe a couple campaigns here and there, there isn't many I'd consider to be beginner unfriendly

Thx
as Nick said MOST are new player friendly. Harder groups to find are ones liek when u are under 18, want the group to be in person, etc
anyone want to play a match with me
thats not how it works my friend as it is RARE to get that to happen BUT more importantly, feel free to check out lfg-instructions-faq and follow the easy instructions to find games or post what you are looking for
wait meet me in #character-discussion real quick
Hey Wolf. There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Thank you.
any time!
i actually have a character in mind.
I've never actually played
but
i have watched
the basic (free rules) and using D&D Beyond make it rather easy to make a character 🙂
Yeah, whatcha got?
certainly
Sir Alexander Ravenheart the last Master Knight of the Knights of Obsidian
also a cool bot may post those links soon. I donvt know the bot commands or I would've made it do it lol.
?new
he wears a full suit of black plate armor and a red cape.

ohhh cool hehehe
spam. I would love the bot trigger list so i can be more helpful on here if I am allowed. u could DM them if thats cool.
sounds intense wolf
Thanks for thay
it is
the Knights of Obsidian was meant to be an order of Black Knight
not all of them wore a red cape
the capes represents their rank
Black is for the beginner
blue is for the novice
green is for the sergeant
maybe give more info in one send so u dont clog the chat my friend
Would i be considered new if i have played “dnd” with a small group of friends but we really didnt care for the rules and kinda make up our own thing? I still need to learn official dnd rules + gameplay so im assuming yes
howd yall get into dnd
I think it'd be kinda fair to say yes, because if you guys are making your own rules and game, then it's not really d&d depending on how much it's alyered
Birthday gift with the old red starter box
Right thats what i assumed, thanks for input tho just making sure
cool
a buddy in said lets try this cool game my parents taught me. that was over 35 years ago
I asked my friends if they wanted to play dnd, they didnt wanna learn all the rules so i didnt either
Can ya edit that to remove info that could pinpoint your exact age please? (Soliciting or sharing personal info is against our User Safety rules because unfortunately we’ve had incidents of creeps targeting underage users)
bro is the opposite of underage🙏
wdym
i totally get it, applying the rules to all prevents from creating issues. I didnt even think about it lol
i appreciate u letting me fix and not just deleting lol
After the red box I didn’t really get to play much (no one was interested) until high school and then I ended up playing/running Shadowrun (a different ttrpg) with my friends.
Do you guys know how i could find a group that would be willing to play by the rules?
Check the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for groups/games.
Awesome thx :)
No guarantee they’ll run exactly by the book but I bet many of them will be close enough.
i have friends that will play but dont know the rules
but something tells me they have no interest in playing
Might watch a D&D livestream with them and see how they like it.
R u supposed to DM the person or msg in the thread?
Either or both. Some folks ask to be direct messaged while others may prefer to have the interested party layers post in the thread.
Okeydoke thank you
I think it was due to pathfinder and world of darkness lol
Hey can someone help me make my character sheet for my Homebrew race I'm basing her off a
nymph but I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to do that and also I just generally struggle with character sheets if not its fin tho #dnd-newcomers #frequently-asked-questions
nvm ill figured it out later ask later
Where can I ask to join a game or do I just wait for someone to advertise it?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.

Theres lfg stuff on this server for an online game and if u want 2 play irl there's probably a game shop somewhere that u can do that with
This isnt where you ask to join a game specifically, but where you ask to join a different community/server that has a game prepared
And you don’t solicit or organize games in these discussion channels but use the Looking For Game channels (read #find-a-game carefully)
how long do one shots tend to be, im trying to hold my first game
That varies. It really depends on what you need it to be. there are FAR to many factors to give you a straight answer. I believe most pregenerated give a best guess length it should take.
is 3 to 4 hrs fine?
That is most DMs goals i'd think. Unless you are say running at a con where it may want to be longer. or hanging with yer buds wanting to play ALL day on a weekend or something
3-4 hours is pretty common, but it can vary wildly based on Players
since some will rush through the story while others might get sidetracked for example
I have never played dnd before, the extent of my knowledge is how AC, dice rolls, and a tiny bit of how races/species. Other than that I pretty much know nothing besides a basic understanding of what the game is.
Thats a great start Cyclone. There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Got it. Ty.
check out #learn-to-play for sure.
hi
Hello
Hi
There's a lot to get into. check out the channels to see what ya like and what catches yer interests
if you are looking to find a group, follow the easy to follow rules in #find-a-game to look whats availanle and / or post what you are looking for
alright thx
of course!!
so where would i look for unpaid dnd games?
yeah its says look for the looking for channels i dont see them?
nvm i did smt and found it
Awesome
honey, yer not supposed tp advertise for games on this channel. that is reserved the ones u find in the #find-a-game rules
oh my apologies, its just that i was able to do it earlier without any problems
Please do not solicit or organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels - it's off-topic outside of those channels and will be moderated.
coz an Admin or us folks who frequent must have missed it lol
Alright, thanks for telling me about it
no prob 🙂
can i discuss a boss idea here?
If you're a DM it's best to use the #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building channels
This channel is more for folks new to D&D to get help with the core game rules and mechanics.
gotcha
hii, i'm very new to DnD.. but i wanna learn and maybe join a round someday to figure out how things are done? i have a few ocs if that could help!

what would be some good snacks to bring?
You can bring anything really, all depends on what you feel like having!
People usually bring cookies, donuts, pizza, stuff that's easy to share
Some people can't have dairy though or may have allergies so just be mindful of any dietary restrictions that the party may have
Hey everyone! I just finished working on my first Character sheet on d&d beyond and I'm so excited to play!
You’ll have a blast
I've never ever played D&D, I can't seem to find a(n online) game...
Sometimes the best way to play DnD is find others in real life. Of course if that’s hard don’t feel pressured to do so.
I've looked around and haven't found anything.. also I think I'd rather play from the comfort of my PC
Ah shame. Well I hope you find a group. We have a chat for players and dms so hopefully one will pop up soon
I'm looking to join someones campaign
Or I'd like someone to teach me how to be a dm

is there a good dnd starter for someone who wants to be a DM or like a website i could buy everything from
How do you play online
The Starter Set (with Dragons of Stormwreck Isle) or the Essentials Kit (with Draagon of Icespire Peak) has all you need to get started playing the game. And there are tons of free resources online for learning how to be a DM.

Hey i am planning on playing some d&d
are there any recurring campaign's i can be a part of
ive dmed before but havent played much
Hiya
You can see what people are offering in #looking-for-players . Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Is there a video guide how to get started with d&d?
Yep, here (official intro videos): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfS8QgUdeGYr-v1QfBH4x_diAZ7SGNFj4
And here (critical role handbook helper videos): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN

Hello!
Hey Galax

Howdy
Hellooo
Howdy Lion
anyone here new players who havent tried the Tyranny of Dragons saga wanna join my campaign starting in 1:30 hours?
u have to advertise games by following the instructions in #find-a-game
i have to wait for another 3 days
That doesn't mean you get to advertise here while u wait. If we don't follow the rules, this channel would be full of advertisements
You can PM anyone in #looking-for-dm.
Don’t PM people who haven’t asked for a game to join.
Hello guys, im very new to this kind of thing. Can anyone kindly teach me how to do it? 😄
Hey Starke, There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
u have to advertise games by following the instructions in #find-a-game ny friend, not here
I did but two people left and it won't let me post another one until four days later
That doesn't mean you get to advertise here while u wait. If we don't follow the rules, this channel would be full of advertisements
Its basically a board game with rolpaying and a bunch of spreadsheets and stuff in it
I would recommend working out what types of words are for different things
In the future could be wise not to remove the post, do you can post any updates there in case you lose players (which is pretty common from my experience)
Yes, i've seen some people in movies playing DND, and im kinda interested to learn about this
Its both extremely fun and soul crushing at the same time
It’s my first time playing DnD and it’d like to try, any tips? I’ve read the rules and roles on the game already
There is a how to play thing on this somewhere and alot of stuff for free on dnd beyond
There are payed books as well but I would recommend getting them if u think u want to play the game long term

Oh thank you
I will try to read it first 🫡
Also, how would I know if a character would be too overpowered
Characters don't usually because overpowered until super late levels and/or if they have an abundance of magic items
if you follow the rules and don't delve into homebrew, its very difficult to become OP
Yup, just follow the rules in the Players Handbook and the free rules and you should be good.
I would probably recommend going for one of the more basic characters until u are more confident with the rules
Like fighter rouge ect, basically stuff u don't need to make that many decisions with
Good idea, tysm! I have been roleplaying for a long time but I have never played DnD, so I think building a basic character could help me get a fresh start
Playing a simpler character will help you learn about the mechanics of the game and then from there, you can decide what you wanna play
through calls
So just open the app and call?
it is used for the voice and video (sometimes). u either get on a server, a voice call, or make yer own server
then use apps like D&D Beyond, Roll20, Owl, etc etc etc for characters and maps
Alright tysm
Hello, coming back to the server after some time. Since the last time I joined, I have now become a DM and have been running my first campaign since January of this year
Heck Yeah Joey!!! Congrats!!!
Thank you ❤️
Is Abjurer a good class? I am gonna choose Diviner
I always say that there is no class better than others. the only best class is the one that you as the player will enjoy the most. they all have their pros and cons, so only u can answer that
It’s best to do the research and see if that’s a class that works for you as a player. I know plenty of players who like the spellcasting elements but are looking for certain details: damage vs deflection, control vs effect
What edition of rules are you consulting? Just curious, because Abjurer is a school of magic, (especially relevant to wizards who sometimes have special affinity for one school over another), but I think, in 2014 rules and 2024, you don't have Abjurer as a class, or subclass, but at some point in the past you had one subclass, more or less, per school. That said, I've only dipped into Wizard for a level, on an Eldritch Knight, I haven't played a dedicated Wizard before. So I'm learning as much as I'm sharing knowledge.
It's a decent subclass of the best class in the game, but I really wouldn't worry about optimization if you're a newcomer
Abjurer is a Wizard subclass
I just reread 2024 page about Wizards, a little .... I'm wrong about the chronology
It seems one subclass per school is more where they're going, not where they used to be.
Abjurer and Diviner both are in the 2014 and 2024 PHB's
Wizard has a subclass for all 8 schools of magic, and then some
Where do things like Bladesinger and other more flavorful subclasses come in, then?
In books other than the PHB
yep makes sense now
This is wrong. There's a Wizard subclass for every school of magic since the 2014 PHB.
Couldren of everything,
Bladesinger originated in Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and later reprinted in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. Tasha doesn't have every non-school of magic Wizard subclass.
Gooie, I own a starter kit from 1977, my brain is trying to wrap around almost 50 years of rules evolution, pardon the differing perspective. 2014 is still being played in two campaings I'm currently in.
I noticed you were confused. That's why I'm explaining this to you.
I love Tasha’s
I've got a big hole in the middle 3.5 decades or so, however. I missed out on a lot of the history from a player or DM perspective, though I had cultural touchstones and vicarious enjoyment that kept it alive in small doses.
Hello, how's everyone doing today?
i am good and u
Eeeeyyyyy
I'm also good, thanks, just trying to get into DnD because I found out that my close friend is a dungeon master
oh thats awesome to already know a DM
Yeah, he said that one of the players is getting dropped out because he keeps ruining the fun by robbing every character they come across, or showing up hours late, so a spot will be open
nice!
So ye, i finally have a reason to drop the curiosity and actually put effort into starting on DnD
Hours late? Damn
Hours late is crazy
Yeah, i can only imagine how annoying that'd be
I am kinda new so I dunno which subclass for Wizard to choose
Well, given j have a minor who didn’t even let there parents know about the game yeah. Peolle are crud at time
Ooooh
I already have art of a character that i had in mind, but i have absolutely no clue on how to make the class without making it too op or too useless
It's hard to be op unless you really try and or misinterpret some rules
Well, i already know that the character will be durable but too slow to do actual damage, so yeah- mostly support based
You can't really be too slow in dnd.
Though appearance wise the character would be a good attacker
Your lowest base speed is 25ft. Which is only 5ft less than average
It can be lower but that's by doing stuff like wearing armour when you aren't proficient
Mine's a bunch of flesh grown inside a metal shell, a necro-golem
Oh don't worry about that, he's... Not a bright bulb
Id say discuss this with the DM at the end of the day they have to balance the encounters
I mean, fair enough, sounds like a good idea tbh
You aren't really able to have armour on you all the time
I have a player who has a golem type pc but at lower levels restricting movement can be really bad unless you have very high AC
The metal is not really going to be thick, it's a really thin sheet of metal just enough to cover all the flesh under it
A simple rock thrown at it is enough to make a good dent
Maybe go with artificer they get the armourer sublass at lvl 3
I suggest working with D&D Beyond and make a character or 2 so you truly understand what is possible. 90% of yer idea sounds SO COOL! but sounds like it comes from a artistic rule free style of Roleplay. D&D has a pretty stout and effective system to keep everyone on the same playing field.
I've never played dnd before and I have no idea how to get into it, I can't play it in person because it's not in my city so how do I begin?

Thank you
Oo, exactly what i needed, thanks Undying :D
I’m pretty new to dnd but I’m having some frustrations with my group and wondering if it’s normal - we meet in person and it just feels like we get nothing done. Half the time I’m just waiting for something relevant to my character to happen. For example, rn the party is split and I’ve been sitting here for 2 hours waiting for my turn. I’m not allowed to talk about anything dnd related since my in game character can’t see what’s currently happening, and I’m not allowed to talk about something not dnd related cause then I’m being off topic. I’ve just been sitting on my phone which I’m not even supposed to be doing but like what am I even supposed to do? Idk am I just being impatient? Is dnd just not for me? Should I bring this up with the dm? Nobody else seems to have any issue with it. Even when the party isn’t split it still feels like I’m just sitting around waiting
Oh and when I say I’m not supposed to/allowed to do something I mean the dm gets mad at me when I do it
Sounds like poor game pacing and party management. You could discuss your frustrations with the game with the DM after the session. Just frame it constructively or the DM may take it personally.
Alr
It just feels weird since nobody else has issues with it
And they’re all much more experienced than me so I feel like I’m the problem and I’m just being impatient
They may be experiencing the same issues but not know how to bring it up to discuss
Oh yeah true
At the end of the day, no D&D is better than bad D&D.
D&D is supposed to be a fun game. If it's not fun, time to pause the game and figure out why it isn't fun.
Sometimes it can be addressed. Other times, it may be time to part ways and find a new D&D group.
Alrighty thanks
Definitely bring this up to them i dont want my players to feel left out or ignored im sure they dont want that for you either
Gods so much overload here. Want to talk to someone, build friendships and generally discuss D&D but in this chaotic hive, I have no idea where to find people
Ideally the DM will manage the game time between the players so that nobody will be feel left out.
Bot is being slow today. Take a look at #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find players/put together a group to play D&D.
Yeah if youre just sitting there for hours thats bad
@echo kelp not really looking for a game group, just looking to interact without being lost in the highway of text
Ah
It seems like this is how they’ve always done it, doing everyone’s little personal side quest for a few hours then switching when they’re done. I’d feel bad bringing it up since I’m the new person to the group and if it’s how they’ve always done it then maybe it’s easier for everyone for me to just leave yk?
This may not be the best server for that as it's a text discussion oriented server. Maybe see if some of the communities posting in #looking-for-community may have voice chat and other social channels better oriented towards what you're looking for.
Yeah I too would just leave and find another group. If they're having fun and it's already an established gaming culture for them, then it's going to be hard to make changes.
I'm sorry I'm not clear enough in my intentions. I'm looking to build friendships, I can do so over text, vc ect, I just want to talk to people.
Dm rule #1 never ever ever split the party
The DM is completely happy with this decision, it’s the players it’s a problem for.
I ran a oneshot. Dm for main campaign asked if we could split up. I responded if you wanted to die yea you can
You can join us in #dnd-discussion and #dm-discussion
Thank you
We have silly discussions and hijinks over there.

i love dnd

I’m great thanks
That's great to hear 😀
I’m new to all of this, I made a character that I don’t even know if I did it correctly
And I am looking for someone willing to teach me

Thank you
Welcome! You can share a link to your character in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check everything.
can anyone help with a trickster character, like best race/class?
how do you want them to be trickster like?
i bet you'd get great feedback in #character-discussion channel
theyre new to the game, i directed them her
what do you envision this pc doing in a combat?
distractin enemies or sneaking into places
definitely a rogue for class.
i feel like Trickery Domain Cleric would be a good fit for them
if youre wanting them to be magical in nature
they are pretty good if u want magic but if u want to try it without magic, the rogue.
what subclass for rouge?
i say smaller race for getting in and out of areas such as halfling or gnome.
ok my dm said to pick a race from phb
Halflings are able to hide from people more easily. does that sound like something youd want to do?
Halflings can squeeze into more areas than most, and they can hide by being hidden from sight by a person, which is unique to them
ok what subclass should i pick for rouge?
thief for cat burglar style
you could use the arcane trickster too
did the dm specify if it needed to be a player handbook subclass?
for magic-thieving
no he said any class is fine
thief sounds like a good fit then
also woah i didnt realise how they changed rogue. very interesting
yeah i like 2014 version a bit better
ok what about arcane trickster that sounds like a trickster, but idk
that dips into magic in a rogue. I personally never had a player play one. seems off to me so I wouldnt try it personally, but thats FULLY my opinion only
ok thanks
for this character what stats would be prioitized?
or what are best stats?
for arcane trickster or theif?#
could you do both?
they have different stat needs
They are both subclasses. You have to choose one.
arcane trickster needs inteligence, thief doesnt
oh ok what would be the best stats for arcane trickster?
dex and int with some con and wis
so charisma doesnt matteR?
uh idk it just seems cool to be able to lie to people and have them belive you?
oops didnt mean to have ?
Hello
huh?
yeah
You can edit your messages by the way. Very helpful!
didnt how about that sorry
It's possible to go in that direction with a rogue, but that'd mostly mean that you put your expertise in the skill Deception in my estimation.
i do dex and cha for the thief with con and wis next. i like being able to use cha to lie my way out if caught
ok got it
theres also swashbuckler
is swashbuckler good?
he is a great distractor with flare and panache.
Yeah. It's a fun subclass. It tries to capture the flavor of a pirate dueling with enemies and stabbing them where it hurts most.
Hi people. I organised a sort of character sheet... (competely noob here)
It should be noted though, Swashbuckler was released in a book called Xanathars Guide to Everything. So you'd need to have access to that book to create one.
Hello! Do you need help with that sheet? If you want other people to look at it (and you haven't made it on DDBeyond), then the general suggestion is to upload it on a share website like imgur (if it's a picture) or google drive (if it's a pdf) and then link it to #character-discussion
Thanks a bunch.
ok thanks so much bye
anyone played pbp dnd-rp here on discord like west marches? personally only experience is bg3 and now that i've caught the dnd bug, im struggling to make sense of how the discord experience compares to the traditional tabletop
Guys I’m I need help and lots of it
I’m making a character that is a 1880s style cartoon character
I’m not good with character creation so I’ll like to talk about this because I truly need help
Ngl don’t ban me I just want a server for 13-17 or smt anyone know one?
We do have #character-discussion for character discussion.
Ok thank you
No but please look through the posts in #looking-for-community as some there may cater to younger players.
Oh thanks Undyingnoob
Hello
Hello
Howdy new folks
Check #find-a-game for help finding a group!
i tried, no one seems to want 3 people
You’ll either have to be patient, make a post yourself, or use alternative methods of finding a group in person or online. Unfortunately soliciting for games outside of the proper channels is against server rules
This here is a resource made by fellow user iamrazorwing that has pretty extensive coverage of all the ways to find a group
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
its so much to read 😭
we just wanted to find a dm to play and have fun. ig i will wait 5 more days to repost
It’s a comprehensive guide to it follows that it’d be pretty extensive to cover as many options as realistically possible 😅
But of course you can just skip the parts you know you won’t use. For example the sections on in-person games are largely irrelevant if you plan to play online
You’ll probably have more luck replying directly to DMs in #looking-for-players rather than waiting for them to find you.
already tried most of them
its hard
Yeah, it can be.
There’s a lot more DMs than players, so DMs generally get their choice of players.
And I know most don’t wanna hear it, but being willing to pay makes a huge difference. I get that many can’t, just know what is more common
It certainly cuts out a lot of the competition, yeah.
Hello everyone, would anyone be down to run through a oneshot dnd I just made. Newcomer DM here
If you want to share a game invite here on the server, check out #find-a-game.
Thank You!
Hello!
Hi brim
lookig to join a campaign
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
Ikr. I still dunno a lot about the game
See #find-a-game for information on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
I still have not built my character
Kind of hard to play a game without knowing at least some degree of how the game works via the game rules 😉
Focus on the first two chapters of the free rules and learning how to put together a character.
If you have specific questions about something, go ahead and ask here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide) and folks are generally good at answering them. Unfortunately though we just don't have time and bandwidthe to teach people D&D one on one.

dumb question but is it metagaming if I add draconic as a language to my character if Dragons is in the campaign title lol
Technically yes. Gane is full of metagaming, but not oall of it necessarily bad, like making your characters adventurers so they'll actually play, or not completely going with the "its what my character would do" mentality to ruin stuff for everyone
Knowing a language is a pretty neutral thing, as generally knowing a language isn't gonna make or break a game unless the DM specifically says something 😛
You could argue that your character living in a world full of dragons would pick up draconic as a language
Talk to Your DM. Some DMs like characters specifically made for the content.
Yeah some asked about languages and I told them these languages are beneficial
Including dragonic
Does anyone have a customizable character sheet? I want to make one before i start my first campaign because I'm an indecisive idiot. Also are there any rules for making characters other than the obvious "no offensive stuff" and no "op powers"?
I use dnd beyond because it’s easier to keep track of your character sheet
What is this "DND beyond"?
it's an app/website that's used to make digital character sheets for d&d 5e
Yeah
it automatically calculates all the hard stuff for you like health, spell slots, etc etc
Thanks, I'll look into it. You've helped me greatly
genuinely a life saver for new players and I still use it to this day even though I've been playing for like 2 or 3 years
No problem! 🤙
You can also buy books on it too for different species and classes like gunslinger

Hello folks
Looking for a group been watching my sister play alot and listened to pod cast but just made a character and looking to see I can join a game
#looking-for-players is the place to go to apply for games you’ll have better chances then looking for dm
Can someone make a D&D game so like all the beginners can play so we can try it out
all of them?
quite a challenge
But beginner friendly games do occasionally pop up in #looking-for-players
Yes, there must be at least hundreds of newbies like yourself. And a good DnD game usually has around 7 people at most.
Nope, can't run for hunderds or thousents of people
Just employ a dozen gms duh
Totally will work out

Welcome to the official D&D Discord server run by Wizards of the Coast, owners of D&D.
The embeded message above has some useful links and resources to help get you started with D&D, including a link to the free version of the 5e D&D rules.
Feel free to ask specific questions as you run accross them.
is chill touch 1d8 or 1d10?
1d8 and stops healing until your next turn (I believe)
Also I’m pretty sure this kind of question goes in D&D rules
1d8 in 2014 rules, 1d10 in 2024 rules.
Oh interesting! Does it still stop healing?
It does still stop healing.
It also loses the undead specific effect.
I’m looking at dnd beyond and it still says 1d8. Any idea why? https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2026-chill-touch?srsltid=AfmBOorhnEegMgVTEkX1m7HFdI4eqc-a2Q4bgiN3vtdNtOx1ZAW0gQcP
At the bottom it says you're using the 2014 version, so that's why
Note the legacy at the top. That means it is the 2014 version.
Yea I just found the other version my bad https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618965-chill-touch?srsltid=AfmBOoohAMLVS5XVYoCRodIllQa7cefo65MhF0deBAQh7wB0NdS8mgPM
A bit confused about unarmed strike (phb 2024)
Under the damage option it says to add the strength modifier and the proficiency bonus to the roll
Where does that proficiency come from?
(I'm assuming it's something everyone has, since it's not a particular weapon proficiency)
Everyone is proficient with their unarmed strikes
Thanks
I'm extremely new to everything about dnd I've mostly heard of it and like everything around it and I'm already a big fan of roleplaying and games in this genrea the things theirs so many things and like rules and stuff that I have no clue how do I even get in too the game because I really wanna get in too it
The basic rules are good to start with, especially Chapter 1 and trying to make a 1st level character in Chapter 2. This should give you a good footing and set expectations for play which you will want to have when you seek out a game to join.
See below for resources including the free basic rules.

How significant is the difference between the 2014 PHB and the 2024 PHB?
90% of the core rules are the same between both versions. Attack rolls, ability checks, AC, travel, weapons, etc. etc. Its still basically the same game. The biggest changes are the player options and character creation. The classes have quite a few tweaks, and there are a lot of redesigned or completely new subclasses. Spells, feats, backgrounds, etc. have also been changed.
hello ! you can see 2024 as the 5.5 version of dnd,
For the PHB it's basically the 2014 book with extra text ( tell me if I'm wrong)
I don't think its fair to call the 2024 PHB "5.5e." There are SIGNIFICANTLY less changes than the changes that 3.5e made to its version.
the 2024 rules are still considered to be 5e, and its still compatible with all 5e sources
so lets call it 5e revamped
I suppose you can call it whatever you like. I just want to make sure we avoid using language that can confuse newcomers
Thank you both!
Hello I have no knowledge of dnd but always wanted to play it but sadly I don't have any friends to play with as I'm from India, I just need some help starting out in a group

Any character that has a high Dexterity can use a bow, but the best classes for bow usage tend to be Fighter, Rogue, and Ranger.
Ranged weapons used dexterity for their attack and damage rolls, so you'll want a class that gets proficiency in martial weapons and uses dex as their main skill. Rangers, Rogues, and Fighters are typically the best options for this, but some subclasses of other classes can open up additional options, like Battlesmith Artificer or Kensai Monk
thx
to you to
I would probably recommend u go for fighter or rouge because they can rely fully on there bows for damage while ranger has to rely more on spells
Rouges are better outside of combat with there large amount of proficiencys while fighters are mostly combat based
Which is in your estimation more commonly used the 2014 rules or the 2024 rules?
I'd guess 2014, simply because 2024 is so new.
Lots of campaigns will still be going on.
2024 is really cool but but alot of ppl think it's bad for some reason so it's probably 2014
If you're new, its probably better to learn the 2024 rules, since those will be the standard going forward. The 2014 rules had 10 years to gain popularity and a dedicated player base, so some people are slow to switch, but those are most likely going to be veterans with a dedicated play-group
I was thinking about buying a PHB second hand as buying it first hand is expensive, however it’s too early to find any 2024 versions second hand soo… I’m not sure what I will do
I don’t wanna spend another 30 dollars wizards of the coast
Well, the basic rules are available for free if you just want the bare minimum to get started. You could also check to see if your local library has any copies of the 2024 PHB
If you're short on change, technically you can play DnD just using the free rules. It contains 100% of the information necessary to create a character and play. The PHB just adds additional options.
I do want to own one tho. I’d like to have access to more than the bare minimum information and also just for the vibes really
You could see if your local library has 5e books available
My nearest library does have 5E books, but they're usually taken out. So you need to get on a wait list for them, unfortunately.
5.002
Okay I did just check the library website and the do in fact have one 2014 copy and it is indeed taken out
Well thank you all for the help
I never thought about the library to have DnD books but I do believe that there will be a long waiting list for them
if i say i know Thieves’ Cant and one other language of my choice. i kind of have to take commen right?
No
You always know common. You choose two additional languages.
Common is a given
okay okay so what should i put?
What's the dominant culture in the area your character grew up in?
i don't know yet i would have based the story around the character i create
Are they human?
There you go.
okay well yeah i'll take that why not
I have played like 2 sessions, and in both of them. My party was wiped out by an overpowered enemy that burnt all of us at the start and we got revived right after that
That's also where the session ended
Same DM?
what is acolyte?
I suppose you mean the background?
yeah
Usually means you spent some time among a community of the faithful as part of your character's background.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Acolyte
You worship Gods and know about them and temples
Different
Well I'm sorry that happened to you. That seems like a bad time.
Perhaps both of those DMs were new? This isn't something that should happen.
Maybe you had bad luck with the trope spinner. Let's just say there's more than two DMs out there that think "hopeless battle to start, then you get revived for the real quest!" is a novel idea.
Did you carry on with either game for the next session?
Yeah
The first one was cancelled cause the DM can't handle 8 players
And the other?
Current
It's only the first session
Next session is this weekend
Well, fingers crossed for you. I guess the important thing to take from it is any useful information you might have learned about your enemy.
Ain't no way
The first session had a lot of hints about the lore
Everyone of us didn't get it until the DM showed the hints
How's your party, everyone getting along so far?
everyone was from the first session that got cancelled
Alr we are all genuine morons
@everyone || Do I need to explain the connection with 𝐻𝑒𝓇, 𝑀𝒶𝓇𝓎 𝒮𝓊𝑒 and why words like 𝓅𝑒𝓇𝒻𝑒𝒸𝓉 and 𝒷𝑒𝒶𝓊𝓉𝒾𝒻𝓊𝓁 are fancy text?|| - DM
DM please, we are all morons
We will get it someday
I’d advise not to ping everyone on this server
Sorry
Nw, just want to make sure you don’t get a rules violation
The everyone ping doesn't even work regardless, but still
I am completely new and I have no idea how to start

I usually find I learn better by just playing and asking questions
But I dunno if that is possible ?
It's good to know the basics and as you play, then you can start to ask questions yk?
Yeah that’s fair
If you’ve got a group ready to teach you, that’s honestly a great way to learn.
But if you don’t have a group lined up already, then learning as much as you can while you search for one can increase your odds of getting in.
I don’t have a group rn
I am just trying AI dungeon right now for fun just discovered it
I've submitted a looking for DM post... will a DM likely message me directly or do I need to somehow search a DM?
Folks interested in having you join their group/game will either direct message you or use the thread attached to your post to communicate with you. Heya y'all, i'm new to DnD but I have been interested in a while, I'm hoping to join a campaign, no matter how long or short it is, I'm open for any dms!
Hey I'm new to DnD and I would love to join someone to teach me about this cuz it seems fun

Or press the symbol that looks like a game controlled and choose the bot post you want to run
Thanks very much
Right, hello. New player here, I'm interested in this D&D game, had it pop up on my YouTube feed a few times for a couple of months now. Figured I should check it out, give it a try, see what's this all about. I know nothing about the whole lore of the game, just a few clips. Not that literate with discord stuff, I'd appreciate a helping hand on how to start with the campaigns and stuff

U probably need to find some people to play with
There are plenty of online games in this server and if there's a game shop nearby you then u can look for an irl game
As for playing it the post above me has alot to get you started
Gotchu, I'm currently applying for a campaign rn actually, I'll see how it goes ig. Thank you
Hey, I'm still pretty new to D&D, I recently started playing my first game with some people I met, and I was really enjoying it. Unfortunately, the DM disappeared out of nowhere, blocked all the players, and the game just stopped.
I’ve been really missing the fun and excitement of playing, so I’m looking to join a new group. I’m open to one shots or campaigns I just miss playing 🙂

welcome! Unfortunately this isn't the proper channel to look for a game. The bot post above has some details, but if you go to the #find-a-game channel, it will have detailed instructions on how to use this server's LFG channels
i see sorry
no harm, no foul. Best of luck in your search
thank you
That has got to suck.
I’ve heard of DMs who do that and it’s just weird.
Hi chat
How do newcomers join a campaign? I have been looking in the looking for players channel for about a week now but no one has responded back to me. I am great at roleplay and can bring a lot to a storyline, but I am very new to d&d
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
As a general reality of D&D, there are more players than Dungeon Masters so getting in to games as a player is often harder than finding players if you choose to be a Dungeon Master. Unfortunately, the demand-supply relationship here is probably not changing in a hurry, so best to be patient.
Side note though.. To increase the likelihood of finding a game, you may want to ensure you are searching in both Looking for players and Looking for DM. In the former case, you can look at the posts for a DM while in the latter, you may get selected by a DM if your post matches what they're looking for.
If in person is OK, you could also consider visiting a local gaming store or seeking out an Adventurers League (AL) game if you can deal with the additional restrictions. While AL also suffers from the DM-to-Player ratio issues, AL games are often posted publicly and if played in person, you're no longer competing with the somewhat more worldwide playerbase of online play.
Where do i go to play online with some people

D&D isn't a video game, so there's no queue you can join or button you can click to play the game. You just have to find a group of people that want to play together, and organize something on your own. This server has channels where you can look for people to join your group. The #find-a-game channel has instructions for how to use those channels. But communication, organization, and scheduling is up to you and your group
hi
can someone explain lifestyle to me and what i should take?
dose someone know what spells you start with as a wizard on a new charterer sheet
At what level?
i said start with on a new charterer sheet
Sure, but a new character doesn't have to be level 1.
Assuming you are level 1, you start with three Cantrips and six 1st level spells in your spellbook.
but what ones?
You can filter spells by class on D&D Beyond to know what you would have access to as a wizard. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells
Any spells of your choice on the wizard spell list that meet that criteria.
There's a lot of options.
This is what lifestyle means: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#LifestyleExpenses
Your game might not use it—I've never been in one that does—so I wouldn't worry about that choice until you have a table.
Agreed with above. I've never played in a game where lifestyle was used.
How does reactions work?
Certain things in the game say that they use a Reaction to activate, such as the Shield spell.
You can use a Reaction once per round. You regain your Reaction at the beginning of your turn.
Reactions always have a set trigger before they can be used, described in the ability description.
Okay thank you all
if your a wizard what are slots for?
To use leveled spells.
Your spell slots are the total number of spells you can cast per day. The numbers will change as you level up. You can check the table in the Wizard class section that tells you how many slots per level you have. Cantrips do not use spell slots and can be used an unlimited number of times.
You can even use higher level slots for lower leveled spells usually for more effects.
If it does have more effects the spell will tell you.
Generally it's increased die rolls, or more targets can be hit, but always important to check what it does exactly.
idrk know how spells work like how you get them how meny you start with at level one and what ones
an just them in general lol
In your class section, in the spellcasting feature, which is your first feature at level 1, it'll tell you.
Wizards for example, know 3 cantrips and 6 1st level spells at level 1.
Your 1st level spells will also be in your class section.
And it'll also tell you how many spells you get per level-up which for Wizards is 2.
ik
As for spells themselves there's a lot
thats what im confused with SPELLS!!!
Two spells I'd recommend would be Magic Missile and Detect Magic.
Spells do what they say they do.
That being said some spells are straightforward, others aren't so straightforward.
idek how they work mostly
You cast the spell and it happens
but you have to do a lot of other stuff
Not really.
idek how yo use a spell
Like I said, you cast a spell and something happens.
Whether it has an effect or not, you check off a spell slot.
Spells have requirements which are labeled as V,S, and M, these are Verbal, Somatic, and Material components to a spell.
For example if you can't speak, you usually can't use a spell that has the V letter on it.
If your hands are bound you usually can't use a spell that has the S component on it.
Material sounds more complicated cause it's importance is dm reliant.
ik all that
Then you know how to use a spell
