As I am talking to my co DM and he said

"I made a mistake with casting one spell per round rules. You can cast a spell as a bonus action and another as an action, or reaction, as long as only 1 spell slot is used.

you cannot do this. Let's try and clear up the confusion.

The spell slot rule is correct, in that, the general rule is you can only use one spell with a spell slot a turn, and that would be the only restriction.

However, in this case, you used Quickened. Quickened has a special rule that only applies to it that if you cast a Bonus Action spell (any spell including cantrips), your action can ONLY be Cantrips. So this Combo doesn't work not because of the Spell slot rule, but specifically because the Bonus action spell is Quickened.
The specific Quickened text involveed here is:

When you cast a spell that has a casting time of an action, you can spend 2 Sorcery Points to change the casting time to a Bonus Action for this casting.** You can’t modify a spell in this way if you’ve already cast a level 1+ spell on the current turn, nor can you cast a level 1+ spell on this turn after modifying a spell in this way.**

But dnd solo isn't really a thing.. cause it's the dms job.. to either convincingly lie to the player to make the game difficult enough to enjoy or to plan ahead well enough to have prebalanced and modify the enemies to be fun.

You're doing yourself a big disservice if you don't at least try to explore those options.

It's more common for people to suggest not homebrewing rules. All you really need to start homebrew world is to start small.... A building, a dungeon, whatever, and just expand outwards. Trying to tackle an entire world before you even get going is what tends to bury you in development hell.

For world recommendations, Forgotten Realms / Toril is the most supported and used by existing content so it's not a bad one to get familiar with if you will at some point buy most things produced by Wizards of the Coast.

To the confusion, just ask the questions and keep reading / playing / DMing. You'll pretty much never know everything. It's really more about group storytelling and the extent to which you need stuff depends a lot on your group, how it play, what their expectations are, etc. Familiarity with the rules and a common world just gives everyone a basis upon which these things are better understood so the "playing of the game" can be enjoyed more.

Knowing 2014 isn't a prerequisite for 2024. If you're looking to play with 2024 going forward, I'd just learn that ruleset.

But then again, D&D is so flexible that you could also just continue with the books that you own. Up to you really.

It sort of depends on what your group uses. There are still people out there playing with 1E and 2E editions that are 30+ years old, so it really depends. However, when it comes to everything new that will come out and what it will be based on, as well as the likely thing that will grow moving forward, that would definitely be 2024.

As an example, I play Adventurers League and they switched to 2024 pretty quickly. Thus, I switch to 2024 pretty quickly. Your group might be different though.

Saying all of that though, even if you don't buy anything else, I believe buying at least the PH is a good middle ground as it gives you the base upon which almost everything for players in 2024 works off of, so you should be mostly ready should your games shift to 2024.

Probably would be looking at dumping CHA. Dex Con & Wis are three primary saving throws and are rough to dump, plus Dex gives you Armour Class, while Constitution will give you some life, which you'll probably need with a -5 on CHA because fights should probably be expected.

I've actually not played DnD before since it's not particularly easy finding a group in my country. But my Uni has a board game club and the guy who will DM made a discord announcement saying he has 1-2 positions available.

Personally, if you're new, it's best to use Standard Array or the Free Rules / Player's Handbook Point Buy type system. Much more forgiving when the creature shows up that happens to hit at the weak stats in your build. For example, with a 1 or 2 STR, if a Shadow hits you even once, the character is basically permanent dead.

Personally I tend to like my characters more min-maxed which is why I went my way, but truth be told I did not consider that scenario (although I don't know how common of an enemy shadows are?)

So, two things there I guess....

  1. You can min-max some with Point Buy as well as you can allocate as 3x 15s and 3x 8 if you want, which by the time you finish adding +1/+1/+1 for background could be 3x16 and 3x 8. You don't have to min-max that extreme, but you can.
  2. Shadows are more common at early levels as they aren't that strong. Most characters can just take a couple of hits from them, while someone with that low a STR has no room for error. It also depends on your DM and campaign though. A DM that just likes them or has a campaign revolving around Undead, will be much more likely to be dropping Shadows on the party.

The best thing to do when creating a character is to just roll a 4d6 and take away the lowest number and add the 3 remaining numbers for each stat

The easiest way to roll that would be’!randchar’ without the parentheses and do it 3 times and keep the best total score and then put those numbers anywhere you want to for the stats

A bit confused about proficiency
What if I have multiple things that give me proficiency on the same skill? (If that's even a thing)
And also, it doesn't apply to abilites themselves, right? Just the other stuff like skills, armor, saving throws, etc.

So there's the proficiency bonus, which is tied to your character level. This increases your to-hit bonus, your spell save DC, your saving throws, and your bonus to certain skills. You can also be proficient with certain armor, tools, and weapons. You cannot be proficient in any of the six ability scores.

You can't benefit from multiple sources of a proficiency bonus. (So say you're proficient in Stealth from your species and another feature. You would only add the bonus once.)

Different editions have the same DNA and evoke the same themes but have a different mechanical chassis and aren't cross compatible.

Hi chaps! I'll be playing my first ever DnD campaign in a couple of weekends. I have no experience with DnD though I have started to read the PHB. Myself and two to three friends will start to play via the starters kit (I think it's the kit - my friend got it for her boyfriend and since he never used it, we will be using it). Because I'm the only one who has the time to read through all the material, I automatically also have to be DM. I'll most likely be creating the characters for my friends, as they do not have time to read and thus understand everything. I know it's rather unusual - or so I've understood - for a new player to immediately be DM, but I'm up for the challenge. Do you guys have any tips? Just as a heads up: I don't have access to the starter's kit yet, I'll only have that by Tuesday night, so I don't know what's included and what's provided.

Alignment is usually subjective, but Lawful and Chaotic are just there to show that not all good or evil people get along.

Lawful people usually have an order or code that they must follow. For example, a Police Officer has a duty to keep people safe. Or a Judge has a duty to uphold or maintain order.

Chaotic people have a natural aversion to following rules or cooperating with Lawful individuals. An example of a Chaotic Good character would be Spiderman. Both him and the police are good people, but the police aren't too fond of cooperating with him because of his vigilantism.

True characters are in the middle. Having no strong opinion between Lawful and Chaotic characters alike. And willing to side with either of them.

Superman? Cooperates with the law to save lives. Lawful Good.
Robin Hood? Steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Is technically doing something illegal but for the sake of good. Chaotic Good.

There are many varying definitions for each alignment, and what each exactly means will differ from person to person. The book presents one possible definition for each alignment, but it’s not the end-all and be-all. It is, unfortunately, not a very defined or well rounded mechanic 😅.

I personally use the definition of:

  • Law vs Chaos: Do you believe in and act in accordance with the concept of law? Not strictly that you follow the laws of the land, but that you fundamentally believe mankind (or elvenkind, dwarvenkind, etc) needs laws to prosper.
  • Good vs Evil: This is more straightforward, it’s a question of selfishness vs selflessness. Perhaps more importantly, are you more willing to disservice others for personal gain, or harm yourself for others’ benefit?

In any case alignment is descriptive, not prescriptive. When choosing an alignment you should consider how what your character has already done or is doing and how that might push them along each axis

The short answer is not according to the rules. The longer answer is you can depending on what aspects of those creatures you want reflected in your character and, most importantly, if your DM says you can.

To elaborate: there isn't a shark or mermaid species in the rules, but there are semi-aquatic ones. You could describe them being different from the base, as long as you don't change any of their abilities. If you're looking to go beyond that, though, that's homebrew (fan-made content), and whether that's allowed or not is the DM's call.

Gaining a Level

Typically, a character starts at level 1 and advances in level by adventuring. With each new level, characters acquire new capabilities that equip them to handle greater challenges.

the mods have told me that #ddb-avrae-commands is an acceptable place to test out bot commands. "Complexity" is a written form of the table from the PHB that shows the complexity level of each class. So if someone asks "what's the best class for a beginner?" you can use that command

Session 0 typically occurs before any actual gameplay. The group usually gets together to discuss the game ahead, and any specific things they do (and importantly: the things they don't) want from the game ahead.

It can help prevent a lot of unpleasant surprises during play by ensuring everyone's on the same page from the start.

yeah. Its just a time to sit down and talk about the game, before actually playing. You're not in character, and not rolling any dice. One of the main reasons D&D is such a popular game is because there are so many different ways to play it, but that also means what one person wants from a campaign may be very different from what someone else wants.

And sometimes, those differences may be too much, and those people would be better off in seperate groups. There's nothing wrong with that. Everyone deserves to play the game however they want to play it. They just need to find other people that want to play it the same way

I'd advise against using AI to play D&D. Due to the nature of how machine learning algorithms work, it will frequently get rules wrong, often in ways that aren't obvious.

new player here! my initial character concept going into my first ever campaign was a sort of "blessed archer" build that's really accurate due to some divine spiritual blessing... i was originally going to run paladin but ive recently found out smite can't be used on ranged attacks. are there any other possible alternatives for what i'm going for, or should i just stick with paladin even though i lose out on one of the core moves from it?

Rogue could work. You could flavor the sneak attack as smiting

Ranger could also be something close to the concept (And I'm totally not biased having played the exact kind of character before lol). They have bonus damage to their attacks, and lot of their stuff can really work with a "hunter of unholy / evil" -vibes close to a righteous paladin

If you're looking for primarily ranged combat I would not use Paladin. In fact, Paladins aren't inherently "blessed" despite the name of Divine Smite 😅 . They get their power from their Oath instead of a diety / deific power.

Luckily there's quite a few ways to approach this. A "divine ranged attack" is a very broad descriptor, so many options exist or can be reflavored to the concept. Just off the top of my head:

  • Light Cleric (reflavor spells like Guiding Bolt, Fireball as arrows/arrow storms)
  • Sun Soul Monk (reflavor your sun bolt as an arrow)
  • Battlemaster Fighter (reflavor techniques as divine blessings)
  • Celestial Warlock (reflavor Eldritch Blast as arrows)
  • Evoker Wizard (reflavor spells like Firebolt, Fireball as arrows/arrow storm)
  • Ranger, in general (reflavor Hunter's Mark as a divine blessing)

We were all really new to it originally. Chapter 1 and the Glossary of the Free Rules (linked above) can really help.

After that, diving in to making a character using Chapter 2 (which in turn refers to parts of other chapters) is a great followup as you will be creating a character when you do join someone's game so knowing how is a good thing to be familiar with, even if your eventual DM might guide you through the process and/or the specifics of their style of game.

Even if you do not understand everything at first, the rules are often referred to even by "veteran / experts", so it is more useful to get a feel for the rules, create a character, and then just find a game.

Since this server is english only, I wager that predominantly english speaking countries see a larger representation in groups that offer open slots. Of those english speaking countries, the united states is the largest and the place where D&D is most entrenched. So those time zones will be the most common.

It's good to read Chapter 1 and the Glossary and create a 1st level character. Beyond that, you could probably start. Memorizing everything is not necessary. You just want to establish expectations of how the game plays.

As this is all on their own time, it is only fair for them to say they do not have time for it. Only speaking for myself for a moment, what little time I can spare for this Discord does not leave me with enough to review characters, and thus i find myself seeing that others may have similar difficulties.

If you mean kept from players, I personally do not hide rules from players. I find out in the open rulings leads to less upset players.

If you mean what rules would the DM keep to refer to, it largely depends on how you run your game. For example, a number of screens have Audible Distance but a lot of DMs don't use it. Personally, a quick reference for Conditions is a useful thing to have back there.

  • Remember that your character usually starts at level 1, where they are fairly weak

Not conforming per se, I've seen a campaign where the dm balanced this feature by having 2 main stipulations: the characters age has to be at least middle aged in whatever race it is (to fit thematically with being more experienced), and they were required to have an impairment (like cateracts, giving a permanent disadvantage on perception checks), but like I said, this was one campaign so that may have been an outlier?
(Also alternatatively they could also just be level 1 with no drawback)

By “good bard” do you mean like an interesting build or a strong build, because if you mean strong then it’s not really possible as you are only level 1, good thing is that campaigns scale with your level so you won’t be dying instantly at the beginnings of your campaigns and the combatants will get harder only as you level up and get stronger

Abilities
