Idk how else to explain that😭
Well as you probably know, it's the official server about D&D and chatting about D&D. A good place to get news and help with the game, and even find groups to play with 😛
I have a really good campaign idea, where do I express yhat?
#dm-discussion or #dm-world-building depending on context (also check out #channel-guide to find the best channel for a specific topic)
Thank you, vause I already scripted the intro and stuff
Hey I'm new here and to dnd in general, I've been wanting to play for years. I'm not new to role-playing and I am able to be taught, can somebody help me with everything?😭🙏

Which warlock patron is good for a beginner, I thought great old one was good since from what i've read its versitile but apparently not
How do I make a character?
D&D Beyond has an easy creator for it to start with, as do some VTTs (Virtual table top), or you can use a physical sheet
You'd follow the instructions on the free rules (should be found in #learn-to-play) or Player's Handbook, picking a Class, Race (Or species in 2024), and background
Is D&D Beyond available on mobile?
Also thanks, love how nice everyone is in this server.
Great Old One is fine. Warlock’s versatility is in your invocations, not your subclass anyway. For a newcomer take the subclass that interests you over worrying about what’s “good” or not.
I believe there is an app for that, yes
Ello! Question: I’m making a dragonborn ranger and a little confused on spells in the players handbook (2024 apparently) it says that Hunter’s Mark is always prepared, but there’s only two spell slots and I’ve chosen different spells. Would Hunter’s mark count as another lv 1 spell or is it something on its own? Also, what are prepared spells…?
From ranger's spellcasting feature: "If another Ranger feature gives you spells that you always have prepared, those spells don’t count against the number of spells you can prepare with this feature", so Hunter's Mark will not count towards those two spells!
Prepared spells are the spell you are able to cast, and as a 2024 Ranger you can change those spells after you finish a Long Rest
Sorry for a late reply, tysm!
where do people find the details for other classes and species? i've been looking through the player's handbook and the dnd beyond stuff, can't find anything related to artificer, tabaxi, etc.
which books/source do they come from?
Artificer: Eberron or Tasha’s Cauldron of everything
Tabaxi etc: monsters of the multiverse
The third big expansion book would be Xanathar‘s guide to everything, though it’s quite old at this point
oh damn
cool, thanks!
If you want to expand your character creation options past the Free Basic Rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 and you perhaps have played some games and think D&D is for you, sure!
Ay
Aight thx
Prepared spells are the spells u can use
Hunters mark is added to them without u having to choose it
If u want 2 then u can
I would recommend getting the 2014 player hand book because most ppl use rules from it
There are also other things like tashas coldron of everything that u could get which add new stuff but it isn't required
Aight. Thx for the insight partner
One should point out that the 2024 PHB is both more modern and also backwards compatible. I don't see any reason for a new player to buy an 'old' product.
I heard that most people don't use 2024 rules for some reason
All D&D products going forward are going to be assuming the 2024 phb.
I'd take that with a grain of salt. But also, they came out last year. Most people won't switch immediately and some people will want to keep using what they know.
There are D&D groups that still run 3.5e
But as it stands, 2024 is is really just an updated version of 2014. And in my opinion, an update that made most things better.
For example, one of my groups switched pretty much instantly to 2024, another waited until all 2024 core books were released and another has started switching just now.

It will depend on your class.
Each class that has spellcasting will list the calculation. For Saves it's usually 8 + Proficiency bonus + spellcasting ability
Ik its my wis I think (as I am a druid
Wep, so wisdom. Then you can see the caculation here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells#SavingThrows
So 12
Assuming you're level 1-4 and your wisdom score is 14 or 15, yes.
14
11 hp
13 ac
17 con (warforged + 15 con)
Nice
If you like, here's also a table for recommended ability score placements depending on class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#StandardArraybyClass
I kinda wanted semi low stats due to backstory
As they were a fighter who was killed and became a druid due to plant growth on their body
That's of course up to you. Though I think you can still have that backstory even without it influencing your stats all that much.
And weather damages
It would make sense my backstory damages my stats as my character has spent ages deteriorating
One thing to keep in mind is that your stats won't really change that much during the story (depending on how many levels you go through). It's not like in a lot of other games where you regularly add something to them.
So personally I'd just have the stats fairly standard and simply roleplay your background.
And there are other less permanent ways to represent any flaws that you could talk to the DM about
Like for example, I had a player who really wanted their character have terrible eyesight, so we figured we'd just have them make any perception check based on sight at disadvantage, instead of doing something that's harder to remove or fix later, or heavily affecting other things, like having them be blind, or really low wisdom score
how different would 5.5e be compared to 5e in terms of the player's handbook? i'm thinking of buying it, but i heard from my local shop that 5.5e's coming out soon to their stores
and i heard there's a new class on its way, right? the psion class or smtg?
The psion class is being playtested (Unearthed Arcana is the name for official D&D playtest material). You can discuss it in #1376935556046524589.
Although I think right now they are collecting feedback (e.g. the playtest is closing now).
As far as 2024 vs 2014 rules - the core mechanics really haven't changed. 2024 allows for 2014 material to be played with/alongside it with some minor tweaks.
The two handbooks are the same general idea with the same sort of stuff in them. The 2024 is basically just full of QOL updates. Everything's a bit shinier, runs a bit smoother, etc.
then what's different with 5.5e? is that the 2024 version? or is the 2024 version an updated 5e?
i'm confused as to the difference between 5e and 5.5e, cause the store guy just said that there's a 5.5e on the way and told me to wait for that, but rn, idk what is 5e and 5.5e in 2024 phb
Game mechanics and rules-wise, not a lot - that's why it's still D&D 5th Edition
As pieisacake noted, it's mostly Quality of Life updates that help smooth out perceived balance issues between classes, clarify some mechanics/rules, and generally polish and smooth things up.
That's what some people call it yes.
5.5e is something the community came up with. Officially it's just the 2024 version of the 5e rules.
But it's still D&D 5th Edition, 2014 or 2024 materials.
so there is no official 5.5e coming out, it just refers to the 2024 edition rather than the 2014 edition?
cause if so, man, i got jebaited into thinking there's another edition coming out, lol
We can only speculate as to what your store person meant, but I do suspect they were referring to the 2024 version.
ah, in that case i'll just get the 2024 version then, lol
Good plan
guys, ive got the 2014 monster manual, dm's guide, and player's handbook, how do i upload these/get them on my dndbeyond account? or will i have to buy digital copies?
The latter, unfortunately.
The digital product is sentirely separate from the physical.
:/ i spent $300 just to have to pay more?
Only if you want the added digital convenience.
You don't need the DDBeyond version.
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
yippee, 90 more bucks down the drain
Are druids predominantly support casters?
I think that depends on how you define support.
Like buffing debuffing and healing
That’s definitely in their wheelhouse spell-wise, but I don’t think it’s largely that, and sub-class matters quite a bit with druid as well.
Circle of land druid/fighter
As my warforged was a fighter
Land is focused on spellcasting (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/515-druid-101-circle-of-the-land), so it really comes down to what spells you pick (and what are available to you with additional spells). Support is possible, but that’s not all the druid can do.
Can be could be lots of ac and stat buffing like ik I have faerie fire and shelligh as spells which along with my fighter multiclass could work
There aren't a lot of AC increasing spells in the game, and 0 'stat' increasing ones.
Unfortunately, Druid isn't really the class that gets AC increasing opinions. That would be Wizard, Sorcerer, or Cleric.
Barkskin?
Since Barkskin just sets your AC to a flat amount (an amount that's already pretty easy to reach just wearing normal Fighter armor) I don't think it's going to help much in this case
Which with the other player being a monk will be fine for a bit
17 is pretty nice, but there's nothing you can do to buff that further due to how the spell works
But yeah, I wouldn't be complaining about 17 AC, that's good.
Ok so cant do much with my monk so it'd be primarrily a self use spell
The monk's ac is 16
And mine is 13
Which will be good as my fighter cant use heavy armour
(Due to being druid as main class)
Heyyy so uhmm I'm kinda new to dnd and i really wanna create a cool character for myself it'd be nice if someone can help lol
What you find cool and what others find cool can be quite different. However, probably the most likely way to find something you might find cool to play and look for something that seems interesting to play to you because if you like it and/or are excited by it, the result is always going to be better than if someone just gives you something cookie cutter to play. While there are rules that define what can be done, a lot of D&D is how you interact with it and less a box you are relegated in to in making choices.

welcome! The bot post above has some great resources that can help you get started. The D&D Free Rules do a good job of walking new players through how to make a character. If you'd like help brainstorming your character and deciding what options to pick, then you can go to the #character-discussion channel for that discussion
Okayyy thanks sm I'm gonna check it out
What type of things would u consider cool
Like what type of vibe do you want from it
I could probably help
Idkk I looked into it a little and rouge class seems really coolll
Something like that maybe?
I'm still looking through everything lol
The 2 classes that have that kind of theme are the rouge and the warlock
whats a warlock?
It's a spellcaster that uses the magic given to them from an powerful entity
Rouges don't have any magic?
It is a more complicated character to play than a rouge but u can do more with it
Maybe I'll stick to a rouge for now?
There are some ways rouges can use magic but if ur using the free rules u cant
They focus more on useing there enermys distraction to deal more damage
Woahh cool
U can go for either but I would recommend rouge
What rules are u useing (2024 or 2014)
I think it's 2024
Yeeaa I wanna go for a rouge tooo
2024 rouge is really cool because u can deal less damage to give enermys different effects
Anyway gtg
Ohhh wow lol
There's a rogue subclass at level 3 called arcane trickster that can use magic. Not as well as a wizard, but magic is magic.
Ohh damn what can they do?
Arcane Trickster can cast some useful low level spells, move things around with an invisible, floating hand, and (at later levels) can make it harder to resist their magic when they catch enemies by surprise.
They get the wizard spell list, which contains a billion things. But because they are not a full caster, you don't ever get access to stuff like meteor swarm. So you're better off with utility spells, shape shifting, going invisible, smoke clouds etc.
welcome! If you have any questions about how to play, feel free to ask them here
Is anyone here good at roll20? I'm pretty new as a GM, and I wanted to ask for some advice
So how can I play the game?
You’ll likely get better support on Roll20’s support channels but you can also check with folks in #third-party, our channel for 3rd party tools, services, and materials for D&D
Thank you!
hi guys
i started to watch about dnd a few days ago, im making my character but is a little stuck, can anyone help me
What are you stuck on?
what should i do in the character sheet sections
im already done for name, class, race, AC, speed, hit dice, traits (only 1), language, intimidation on skills and +2 on strength and +1 on constitution. Im a half orc fighter btw
Depends on the section. Best way to do character creation is to follow the character creation chapter in the basic rules or player's handbook. Basic rules are free and are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 . The Player's Handbook is a pay product.
Looks like you're missing an origin, also called background.
thanks, but is it free pdf bc im broke
to the point i have to make my own d20 with paper 😭 🙏
If it helps, there are dice rolling tools online. Even Google has one built in. You can literally type "roll d20" in to the Google search bar and it will roll a 20-sider for you. D&D is so much more accessible to new players these days.
If you're looking at half-orc, that's the 2014 rules. Here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Class, race, background. Each come with some choices to make.
thanks
Use the standard array method for ability scores as a default.
Would someone teach me how to be a DM
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
the two bot posts above have some very helpful information that can get you started. If you want to discuss it further, you can go to the #dm-discussion channel and get advice from fellow DMs
Thank you so much
Ok so can someone rq explain what a background is
Cuz my DM says I need one but I have no idea what I’m doing lol
Backgrounds are just one of the parts of character creation. Like picking a class or species. They will affect your stats and proficiencies, as well as give you some suggestions for ways to role play your character because of their background. But that part is just suggestions. Mostly, it’s just a bundle of game mechanics
So does it take long to make?
You choose a background from among a list of options, generally. So it doesn't take much time.
You don’t make backgrounds. You pick one from a list
You might be confusing “background” with “backstory”
Oh
Hopefully this section of the rules will clarify: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#CharacterBackgrounds
For backstory or a background?
Hello all. Not sure where to say hey so I picked here ...
I was the "forever DM" from 1977 to 1997 (I grew up around Lake Geneva and yes...I still have some of the original dice) . I've been out for over 20 years and things are very different. I'm looking to get back involved and figure starting as a new(-ish) player is the best way. Thanks for keeping it alive.
Howdy. Would you like some Free Rules?
Backstory, one sentence each: what was your character's early life or upbringing like, what got them them into their chosen class, what's a long term goal for them. That'll do you for starters.
Backstory
Hey guys I've never played a proper game of D&D and hoping to find a group to join. Im pretty noob so I some to learn but so badly wanna play. What would be the best way to go about this?
Usually tries to fit the class they chose right?
So you wouldn’t talk about a paladin just killing innocents for example
Look for games you might like in #looking-for-players (among other avenues) and read the rules in the meantime
You might, depending on the paladin
Redemption is an existing subclass
But you'll generally want something that fits the tone/setting of the DMs game
Thank you! This server is so informative.
Depends on the paladin. Some of them can be downright mean.
I admit, I always laugh a bit at the idea that paladins have to be super good since my first two were evil and chaotic respectively. And even in the old system, Lawful stupid wasn't always nice
Ok true but you get what I mean
Hello everyone
Howdy
Greetings and salutations
Where should I put my homebrew stuff to share it with people?
Ye but there it just got ignored like it wasn't even there
That's still the place for it. If you want feedback you might need to say that specifically
Im new to Dnd anything i should know? also whats the difference between a sorcerer and a wizard
Hey guys, played BG3 and I really wanna get into dnd I just have absolutely no idea how to start
Hey u Two!
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Sorcerer has innate ability to cast spells (aka natural talent) where as a wizard has learned by reading and studying spells and techniques to cast their spells (aka in depth studying)
One of my questions is that does my job help in anyway to make people's games interesting?
I'm a voice actor and I have been for a while
Mechanical wizards can technically learn every wizard/sorcerer spell there is with enough time and gold, but each morning they have to decide which few spells they can cast that day. A sorcerers list is much more limited, but if he knows it, he can cast it with out preparing ahead of time
Many games love having voice actors. I have a new campaign with two of them and it’s AMAZING. Lol
Thanks 👍
Yeah, it could. Doing realistic voices for NPCs would make the game more entertaining.
(entertaining= happy players)
I played BG3 doing voices with my character rping with friends
Ive been trying to get into dnd for i while now, are there any basic things i should know like how to play or how to do anything else

hey, just wondering, would anyone be able to help me build a character sheet? i have a video game inspiration and have never built a character nor played DnD before?
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get started with D&D with me and my wife? There's so many options in LFG that it's kind of daunting in terms of campaigns and ruleset. I've played Baldur's Gate and have experience playing video games. Appreciate it!
I can if you're still looking
already found some help, thank you for the offer though!
Hello I’m new to dnd and would appreciate any guidance and advice as I’ve only done 1on1 rps or rpg video games
what kind of advice are you looking for? like dungeon master or player for example
Both honestly as I have no idea where or how to start
in terms of a player, start by finding a dm and making a character sheet at the dms discretion. In terms of being a dungeon master choose whether you want to run a module or a make a world and then find players
Hello
dungeon masters guide and players handbooks are nice to familiarize yourself with, you can probably figure out anything you need on the internet
Hi
I am new dnd but I do have a like start kit but I don’t know how to play
as a player the first step is to find a dungeon master and create a character sheet. Character sheet creation is spelled out in the players handbook but you can probably find what you need online. or I could explain it in as much detail as you want probably.
It the starter set Dragons of stormwerck isle
Thank you
Hey everyone! Kinda new to DnD and thinking of buying some books for myself. Is it still worth buying the 2014 PHB or has everyone switched over to the 2024 version? Hope this is the correct channel!
Really down to your preference. Past material can still be used with 2024 rules and any new stuff is going to be for the more recent set.
If you want a look, here's the 2014 Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
And the 2024 Free Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
If you're just after an opinion, might as well go for 2024.
Hai! I just got dices from my sister and im thinking of making a campaign, but from my past experiences i couldnt figure out when to ask for rolls and such, i'm still very new to dm'ing but i want to know how to dm properly!!! do you guys have any advice or tips?
Generally you'd ask for rolls when a player wabts to try and do something where the outcome is uncertain
Like Athletics for kicking down a door successfully, Persuasion to try and haggle down price or have an NPC assist them in some way, Perception to see if they find something they're looking for, etc.
Anyways check out #learn-to-play which has some useful resources, or if you have specific questions this channel is a good place to ask!
hello
i see!! thank you!
also why do my dices keep rolling away :((( im not gonna eat them
Question where is the best place to buy source books?
And also is it better to have digital copies or physical
Get or make a dice tray.
100% this I had the same problem
The first is just shopping: wherever is convenient or cheapest for you.
The second is more nuanced. Physical is yours. Scribble on it, carry it around, lend it out, do as you will.
Digital is a license if it's not a download. Digital may lack an offline mode. However it does tend to integrate better with tools for online play, and it's a lot easier to get a group for online than in person.
Ohhh thank you so much this is really helpful!
Guys I'm new to dnd learnt the main rules and character creation
and I'm not really sure # looking for players is helping me out to find a one shot suitable .can I find help.
If a post in #looking-for-players isn’t explicitly newbie friendly it’s always helpful to ask to make sure
Otherwise, when trying to find a group it’s best to cast your net wide. This server isn’t the only place to find games. Here’s some other ideas:
- Other TTRPG & DnD discord servers
- TTRPG & DnD social media groups (e.g. Reddit’s r/lfg)
- TTRPG & DnD forums (e.g. roll20, D&DBeyond forums)
- Local game stores & libraries
- School clubs (if you’re in school/uni)
Have u posted what ur looking for or just looked through what the DMs are offering
Imma use this because everything in #looking-for-players is either foundry vtt (wich i can't pay for BTW), not possible for me to join due to time differences (during work hours/at like 3 in the morning CET) . . .
If a DM is using Foundry, you as the player don't have to pay for the program.
Only the DM has to pay for it. Everyone else can connect for free.
Huh . . . Then what about the character sheets? I haven't seen an option inside of foundry to make one
That's part of the dnd5e game system Foundry has
Your DM can help walk you through using the software, if needed.
Good morning
Hi!
Welcome to the server!
hi
So, I havent actually played dnd yet but my first session is gonna be next week. Im a dragon born paladin named Alian. I have a scimitar that melts flesh and I have ethereal wings that come and go
Noice!
i wish u good luck
If you're new to D&D we have #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel to help get you started.
Feel free to ask specific questions
ok
how does weapon mastery work? For example, the PC has greataxe mastery which is cleave. He can use cleave every single turn as long as the attack roll lands?
Once per turn, but yes, every turn.
Any chance I can post an image of my character? I created it in an image creator and added different elements that I would consider to OC but I don’t want to get in trouble with the server
#dnd-arts-and-crafts is where you'll find plenty of character art, so that'd be the place to share yours!
Thank you!
whats everyones fav character they've made?
Thank you!
#dnd-discussion would be the channel for that. This channel is helping folks learn the game's fundamentals.
If you'd like to use this server to find a group head to #find-a-game !
So 2024 rules at lv 5 hahah
Imma be on the forums, like its hard to get into a campaign and one shots where i can just pick up some experience, if i don't find something in the forums soon i might loose interest . . .
Maybe try some text-based games (westmarch/forums) in the servers advertising in#looking-for-community- westmarch is a style of play that doesn't have a set DM and group, often is text-based (meaning asyncronous play, no set meeting time, typically just need to post within a timeframe).
But also recognize that putting together a D&D game and coordinating folks schedules to devote 3-4 hours to a game session is hard work - it's not simply jumping into a video game lobby and finding a game right off.
It's true. Once you've found a group that's right for you, it can still take days or even weeks to prepare for and schedule your first session
I think we're doing the dragon lance camaign but we incorperated dragon born into it
It can take a while to find a group expessaly one that all fit together it takes a while
Can someone teach me about combat and leveling up?
You can read about combat here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Combat
And about leveling up here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
If you have a specific question about either of tose, feel free to ask.
Cant find any campaigns to join, does anyone need a new player?
To use this server to find a group check #find-a-game !
Yo sorry I’ve been in and out littlefoot is keeping me busy
I tried it
Then you just need to be patient and keep looking.
Soliciting or organizing games outside of our Looking For Game channels is off-topic and will be moderated.
You may want to look through #looking-for-players (this is DMs looking for players for their game) and #looking-for-community (D&D servers looking for players and DMs)
What are some more basic apps i should have other than dnd beyond
roll20 is a good one in my opinion, I'm new as well, and the charactermancer makes it very simple to make a character
(assuming you're also new)
So if I want to join a game , do I have to own a own character or does the gm give me specifics how to create my character?
You make your own character, sometimes if your DM wants to do a themed campaign, they'll tell you the theme, and then you base your character off of that
You could use a client like DnD beyond, or roll20, I recommend roll20 for new players like us because the charactermancer makes it very simple to set up a character, I used it not to long ago to set up a character
What does 5E mean?
Fifth edition, it's the current one I'm pretty sure
Ty
No problem
I’m new to the discord but am bored and wanna play dnd how does this work
No offense, but it says you're a dm, if your new, how are you dm?
I can be a dm and a player but I prefer player so idk
Okay
I am stuck at roll20, I made a acc but there isn't a +character button 😭
Give me a second, let me go look at it, I'll be back in just a minute and tell you how to use it
Tyyyyy
My phone's about to die, so give me like maybe 30 minutes to let it charge a bit, and I'll get to looking at that
Ok
How do I create a character in roll 20
Are you on the website or app
You don't
The other person is right but I'm just giving some more information
5e is a version of the game that came out in 2014 there is also the 2024 version that is better
U should ask your dm which one you should use
The 2014 ones are shown as the "legacy" options
Hello guys
Hewo
Hello all
Welcome fresh meat new players.
Hello!
O/
Yo
Hi guys
I'm quite new what should I learn to start a short game?
My friend asked me to be dm
My recommendation would be to get one of the Starter Sets. They contain simple rules for the game and a short campaign.
Good to know thank
It's when someone adds custom things to a game
Is that like I still remain using the game's origin mechanic but adding new things?
Learning what to ask people to roll for in different circumstances is a good idea
Also the basic DCs (the number the player needs to roll more than to succeed
I would atleast recommend getting 1 of the books before dming (the digital version is like $30)
Probably the dms gide would be good
Yeah
Man y'know
It is absolutely impossible for me to buy even one of the book
I'm broke
Basic rules are free
30$ is like my 3 months expenses
There is a very short and free pdf that is intended for new DMs and players. You could have a look at that:
https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf?icid_medium=ddb&icid_source=article-1625&icid_campaign=free-intro&icid_content=peril-in-pinebrook
It simplifies the rules quite a bit and explains the steps along the way.
Thank you guys a lot
I will take a look
You could probably do it on the free rules which u don't have to pay for and useing homebrew
Good beginner adventures (credit iamrazorwing) include The Delian Tomb (https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-L_0WX-KKXsZA22VHr5j), Peril in Pinebrook (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure), The Silvyr Tower (https://www.shacknews.com/cortex/article/437/the-silvyr-tower-a-dampd-5e-one-shot-written-specifically-for-new-dms), The Green Blight (https://howtogm.guide/resources/the-green-blight-v1.0.pdf), or any of Winghorn Press's stuff (https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?author=Winghorn Press).
So uh . . . Im currently using DnD beyond to make a character sheet for a Dragonborn Druid (2014 rules) with a hermit background for a campaign and uh . . . Im currently in the tool proficincies section and uh, Vehicles? SPACE Vehicles??? Ain't that artificer stuff??? Like i was confused at first but now im kinda lost im not gonna lie
Carts, boats, rafts, etc
Space, like the water and land are obvious but space?
Spelljamming is a thing. Though it's not going to be relevant for most campaigns.
I suspect that particular proficiency has only been added to DDBeyond with the release of "Spelljammer: Adventures in Space", because one of the backgrounds in there has it.
I will also point out that vehicle proficiency has been left by the wayside in 2024, presumably because it almost never came up in 2014. After all, it's not required to drive these vehicles.
You know what, im not gonna question As to why the druid class (2014 rules still) gets the proficiency in Spacecrafts . . . I just won't question it
Oh that's easy. It's a DDBeyond quirk.
Also the Spelljammer book was still in the 2014 ruleset.
Hm, im almost tempted to just click on that knowing full well it will never come up during the campaigne . . . Like imagine your druid randomly saying this: "oh yeah, by the way i can make a vehicle that can explore the deep void of the cosmos"
Well, 'making' a vehicle is quite different from being able to handle it in difficult circumstances.
But also yeah, in many settings there is actually space for people to have arrived from off-world.
So it may be that your druid is new, maybe crashed here in a spelljammer.
Though of course, that should be discussed with the DM that will be running that game.
Morning:)
hello
i am thinking because i am not an artist and i want to draw my dnd character does enyone know on what i could draw them?
I hear some folk have had success with Picrew. Apart from that, you might try dollmakers, or a video game character creator. Results may vary but if someone made their tiefling art out of one of the Dragon Age games I imagine it would pass muster.
There's also #dnd-arts-and-crafts , they can probably help more.
Aight thanks
Hello everyone, newbie here, is there any tutorial that actually simplifies how to make a character? i've seen like 7 videos of youtube and still don't get it, need help u_u
Did you see that the rules include a step by step guide on how it works?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
It may seem like a lot of words, but it's at least split up in individual chunks.
There are 3 basic things u need for it
Class, race and background
For classes u could just follow the "quick maker" on dnd beyond
For races just pick what looks cool
And with backgrounds theres a ton but only like 3 of them are avaliable
Really short version: species, class, origin, standard array for ability scores. Read each bit, note your choices.
Thanks all! ill take a look at the page and try to make something ❤️
im new and know nothing about dnd can i play dnd on discord?
Many people who play online use discord voice to coordinate, yes.
And though less common, there are even some groups that play text only games using discord as well.
do i play the actual game on discord or is there an app for it
The game is played entirely in the imagination. There are certain programs or websites used to help visualize what's happening that are frequently used, though.
whats the most popular one
Many will combine discord for voice and / or video with sites such as D&D Beyond, Roll20, Owl, etc etc
The first two I mentioned
?tag new online
^ Article on various tools to play D&D online
whats the difference between player and dungeon master
Players play player characters in the game.
Dungeon Master helps run the game by describing the situation, asking the players what their characters do, decides what dice rolls (if any) are needed, decides what rules are in effect in the given game context, runs combat, runs the monsters, helps guide the story along, and helps decide the outcomes of the character (player and non-player) actions and their impact on the situation.
but they arent a character?
The DM? They don't play a character per se - they're more like a narrator and game adjudicator
so like a moderator of the game
Yep
ok
Referee, story teller, narrator, judge jury and executioner
what dice is used
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
I think you it would be better if you look up a video on the basics or watch an actual play to get a feel for how the game works.
so when i have my character do i roll the dice when its my turn and then something happens
That’s the gist.
Only roll dice if and when the DM asks you too
Usually this is for attack rolls, skill checks, or saving throws (also known as D20 tests)
DM narrates situation>Player tries to do something>They roll something if asked>DM narrates outcome>repeat.
Hey all! I've always wanted to play D&D but every time I got a party they'd kinda cancel or get busy. Are there any open campaigns? I'm new but know some of the rules amd aspects.
If you’d like to use this server to find a group check #find-a-game !
do i have to make my character specific for the DMs world
Usually yes, you make a character for the world unless the DM says otherwise
so i cant make a character and then join any DM?
You can, but there’s a few caveats. Your character may be subject to changes to fit the world and any requirements the DM might have. This is typically if your character uses an option a DM doesn’t allow in their world (e.g. Dragonborn may not exist in their setting). Usually you’re safe if you use stuff from the Free Rules & PHB.
The second big thing you might need to change is your stats. There’s 3 official methods to do so, and some DMs like to customize that further. You’re likely safe if you use Standard Array or Point Buy
The last big thing you want to be careful of is backstory, the narrative component of your character (≠ background, which is a mechanical part of your character). Try to avoid grandiose backstories (e.g. Bobert the Goblin is a fallen god), and backstories with too many specifics (e.g. Eliott was a captain in the Red Tree army of the Desainn Kingdom). This helps make your character very easy to integrate and adapt to the DM’s world.
ok thanks
Hello I am new and I need help and maybe a team, I made a character today my first one and she probably needs adjustments too

;-; I’m trying so hard to find a group to join, as I’m still new to dnd. I’ve only played one session before. But it’s also hard to find a group that understands ppl have a life- and not threaten to kick you if you don’t make it to one session
if u need a mate im here
Thanks, so far every place I’ve looked for a group either isn’t active anymore, or everyone’s group is full
how many person does a group have ?
Plus I have dice that is still new and never used-
Most I’ve seen is six, not including the dm but idk
I’m still extremely new to dnd. I don’t even have a character sheet filled out yet-
oh
same i got interested in it like yesterday
and wrote my character today
it was pretty thrilling i made it with an app
Nice. I just took a pre existing character and made them have a dnd version
i just noticed that youre a druid too, having two identical classes would be a problem in a group no?
I have no clue
I'm still quite new to DnD - I played two campaigns - but that's about it. I know a small amount of info on an Aasimar (having been that be my second campaign thing) and I know what animal companion means, but thats just about it for my information.
Not inherently. It may be a problem if the two players pick similar druid options. But two druids can look quite different depending on their subclasses and spell choices.

subclasses ?
so like i can be druid and idk let's say rogue?
what do animal companions mean ?
At level 3, every class gets to pick a subclass. You can imagine it like a specialization. For example, a druid may pick the circle of the moon, making their wildshape stronger. Or they may pick circle of the polar land, focusing on spells relating to polar regions.
That is also possible, but that is called multiclassing.
I don't generally recommend multiclassing. But subclasses is something everyone gets if they reach level 3.
What class would an Aasimar fall under?
That is a species (race), not a class.
Oh, I didn't know that. I had way more help when I made my character and I sadly didn't grab my character sheets.
anyone know how i change the dnd font colour, its in black for some reason for the species info
That's alright, this is the newcomer channel after all. Let us know if you have any particular questions. A character generally consists of the following main building pieces:
- Species
- Class
- Background
All of these building pieces provide something. The class is (by far) the most important one.
background is it the job or something
It represents what your character did before they became an aventurer. For example, they may have been a farmer.
Here are some examples:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
The character sheets on the free rules are overwhelming
One step at a time. This section of the rules goes through how you can fill it out:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
What if my character was a rouge aasimar?
Does anybody have a group that I could join
that's as valid as any species class combo
This discord has separate channels for group finding. Check out #find-a-game to learn how it works.
This is very overwhelming. I'm gonna head back to bed and I'll chat later if I need some help
Assuming your DM allows the book you are taking the species and class from, any combination of the available species & classes is a valid combination.
can someone enlighten me
my character has several animals with her
since shes tied to nature
Beastmaster Ranger gets an animal companion that can fight alongside it.
And there’s also Find Familiar which gives you a much smaller animal you can command and use as a kind of scout.
I personally would let you but wouldn’t give you mechanical benefit from them in the way Beastmaster and Find Familiar does. It’s something to ask your DM about.
I think 2024 Druid gets Find Familiar by default.
okay and i get to pick the animal?
Yes, from a list of options.
Any Beast that has challenge rating 0.
For example a Bat, Cat, Frog, Hawk, Lizard, Octopus, Owl, Rat, Raven, Spider, or Weasel
Owl fs
in her bio i wrote a couple of animals thinking she was a kind of spiritual mother to animals
i think i wrote like5 animals
I usually have mine as owl because it’s good for scouting.
I think There's a feat u can use to give yourself a level 1 spell from one thing
U can use that to get find familiar
so every animal u mentioned have a specific trait ?
thanks im not very good with triats ill look into it
You can find the full list here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creature-stat-blocks
anyone help my dnd beyond font colour is black so i cant read it
Not sure what you mean but you may get better help in #ddb-support
ok thanks
I mean my character is literally a bunny the size of a 5 yr old child XD
thanks
i wonder
after i fill in my sheet properly
how do i join a beginner's campain bcs all of them require a lvel already acquired and im a noob so..
Become a GM. Problem solved. /Hj
But srsly, your character can have a higher level then one when you're a newbie
Just don't like, make them OP or whatever ig
so like
rn i can just make my character level 5??
i feel like it's cheating if i don't maker start from lvl 1 bcs i never played so i have no notion of levels
Huh…
yea that was weird
I guess? I'm a newbie too so maybe I'm not the best source of info, but if you just say you've never played before you should be fine.
im desperate

thank you bro
No prob bob
Whats your character
dm me i dont wanna get scolded 😓
Fr
They aren’t actually 5, it just means they’re around 3ft tall
I’m not good with height, so I just go off ages since they’re usually in a specific height by a certain time
Why not just say 3 feet tall
Non issue to stop comparing your character to children
Hey guys, I'm brand new to D&D and want to learn the game. The shop near me sells the Adventure Begins board set. Would this be a good way for me to learn the basics of the game or should i try something else ?

oh sorry i changed the settings bcs i got spammed
if yer using an onlie character sheet, u can usuall click on the spell and read what it does each time. I have very experienced players who still do that every time lol
Hi
thank you for the intel
would that not be just fine ? since it's role play
people know it's not you so
Cause I had to look it up afterwards
Couldn’t you like idk define the specific height of a character using a pre made articulate numeric system
If only something like that existed which could define your character to the nth of a measurement instead of trying to figure out the size of a 5 year old child which you couldn’t even recall at first
I don’t mean to be rude but it sincerely is a NON issue
Dude, all I was saying they were the same height as a 5 yr old. It’s no different than an actual human adult being the same height as a 5 yr old. So in a sense I’m not gonna call the adult person that’s 3ft a little person or the M word. But with the way you were sounding you were sounding kinda rude to me.
Who brought that up
I said use a number system.. like feet or centimeters.. what are you even talking about

I would say maybe try a basic race since you're a beginner, but that'd make me a hypocrite lol
We generally don’t recommend starting with homebrew as a new player (or even new DM) because without experience of the core game rules and mechanics you won’t have a good gauge for whether the homebrew is balanced or not. That said, check with your Dungeon Master as well as they may not allow homebrew not vetted by them in their game

Hey.
Uhm awkward question and stuff, but can I ask for smart opinions on a matter?
My wife is creating a campaign with a lot of world building and stuff.
And now the main character (The forever DM who is finally given a shot to be a player) has guesses the entire story.. Secrets, twists and plots even before the first session.
Any ideas on how she can fix that without starting anew?
Add some subtle twists to it and remind the player (outside of game) to play their character as if they didn't know things the player has actually figured out already.

Hiya
Welcome! Let us know if you have any questions.
Hi there!
I am a total newbie to dnd. A penpal of mine encouraged me enough to finally conquer my fear and join a dnd server in hopes of maybe someday taking part in a campaign.
For now I think I’ll just lurk and learn more about all of the rules and stuff.
Hope you’re all having a nice day!
Dnd is basically a board game with video game style skill trees and stuff
The best way I found to learn the game was to look at random stuff on dnd beyond and despite being very new to the game I know alot about it
I'd compare it more to a collaborative storytelling exercise that happens to include a bunch of dice and books.
I have watched a couple of campaigns and read through some of the dnd wiki. The most confusing part for me is the whole dice thing, I think.
The most important die is the d20 (twenty-sided die). You'll use it most of the time when you try to see if you succeed at doing something.
Here's an overview on dice: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#WhatAreDiceFor
the dnd wiki is not a good source for accurate info btw
oh no, shoot : (
Have a look for a geek retreat there are a few in London iirc
I'm not familiar with that area, but I know plenty of people in that age group that are interested in dnd. I'd check up on any local ttrpg game stores. Best of luck.
Hiii I’m new here 😂, I have my first campaign on Wednesday and I don’t want to be the worst lol. Any tips?
you wont be the worst if you have fun and use your imagination. 🙂
just lean into the character you built and have fun with it. be flexible to what the DM puts forth and work with your party to achieve what y'all are trying to do
I know nothing and sat as a dm for 30 mins
Just made the story without knowing much of the rules
Oh okay, I’ll try my best. I don’t have a great imagination at the best of times but I’ll go along with it and see where I end up 😂
If u know how to play the class ur going for u should be fine
Speaking of which one do you want to be?
I have created an Warlock Elf I believe

You'll get in a bit of trouble if you don't follow their protocol for looking for groups or dungeon master, so just look at the messages I sent you a bit ago
Ok?
@small bluff
Do you know how to check your dms
Im a newcomer to dnd and only have played baldurs gate but no normal dnd. Wizard is the strongest class, right?
5e
Context matters - wizards can be very versatile because of their spell list but doesn't mean they are "strongest".
A good party has a good mix of classes, skills, and features that help cover the parties needs.
I can join maybe a short campain or a test session
A reminder that we don't allow game soliciting/organizing outside of the Looking For Game channels - please keep it to direct messages or in the LFG channels. Thanks!
Wizard is a very versatile class. "Strongest" is very subjective
thank you!

Not a dumb question, this just isn't the channel for that. Group formation is meant to occur in our looking-for channels. In your case you'd want to reply to postings in #looking-for-players

If anyone is having a DND campaign on beyond please let me know I have no nerdy friends who play
same
fellas
Same here. New to the game completely.
Check out #find-a-game for instructions about the server's LFG channels 👍
Hi, I have the german version of the three Basic books 2014 and create a story for my wife an daugther right now. Is there an german ordered list of all monsters in the manual by their challenge rating? (I only find some in english)
Appendix B doesnt exist in the german version?
I solved it with dnddeutsch.de
hey there. I've never played dnd but saw people play it online and it looked interesting but i have no idea how to play and don't have anyone to play with. anyone wanna learn together?
#learn-to-play has some good resources to get started, and if you wanna look for other people / group see #find-a-game
Hey! As I am under 18, would I probably not get invited to any group? I've always wanted to join a DND game, but never tried! I do want to now.
There are groups for minors as well, check the lfg posts for that.
#find-a-game has an overview
Appreciate it, thank you.
I DMed you
Apart from Amazon what’s the best place to get DND kit and accessories
Hey everyone. Idk if this is the right place to go, but I have never played a game of dnd, but it looks really fun. My only experience with the game is through the YouTube channels critcrab and oxventure (only a little bit). Would anyone be willing to play with me and show me the ropes cause I'll probably be pretty slow to begin with.
If you’re in London there a place I go which is fantastic for DNd players of all levels
I'm Australian unfortunately but I appreciate it.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Hello everyone I am new to dnd and I need help of where to start and how can I create my first character
Morning val,
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Hey everyone, I'm new to DND and I could really use some direct help. I've looked at a lot of things but I'm still very confused, so if someone would be willing to answer a few questions and help me create my first character, I would really appreciate it (for example, by sharing information and helping directly in a call).
Unfortunately, we have so many new people join this server every day, we just don't have the resources to do one-on-one lessons with everyone. But if you have any questions, feel free to post them in this channel. Anyone that's here would be more than happy to help you
Hi, im new to DND in general and already i have one character im most comfortable with using for roleplay so what i should know before I can reuse it for DND? Thanks again.
I can speed run you through character creation at 6pm UK (3.5 hours)
great thank you so much
D&D character creation requires a lot of picking specific options from a list. Powers, abilities, species, etc. Its not just free form role play. You have the freedom to write your character's backstory however your like, but the point of a backstory is to explain the choices you made during character creation, not the other way around. You can't get any new items or abilities just by writing them into your backstory. So, if you have an existing character that you'd like to use as a D&D character, it is usually a better idea to try and reimagine that character for what they would be like if they lived in the D&D world, rather than trying to 1-to-1 exactly match what you already have in your head
This is the exact same advice I give to anyone that wants to play an existing fictional character as their D&D character
hi, can i ask what the difference is between a west march game and just a normal campaign? not quite sure i understand it
So, in a normal game, you have 1 DM and however many players, but you play with the same group every single time. And you're just following the story of this one set of adventurers, as they go around and do stuff. In a West March game, you have a group of DMs, and a large group of players, and you oragnize games based on whoever is available. So each time you play, the DM and the other players at the table might be different. Typically, all of the adventurers are part of one single organization, so then the story revolves around that organization, and they send out groups of adventurers to complete tasks as needed
ah okay!! thank you!
Hello, its my first time playing a wizard and I wanted to clear some stuff about spells. As far as i understand
I know all the cantrips
I know 6+2(Wizard level-1) spells in total and as on level 1 I have 6 lvl 1 spells, if I create a char of lvl 5, I need to have a minimum of 6 lvl 1 spells at lvl 3, while i do get 2nd level spells, i can technically just choose to learn 2 lvl 1 spells and so by lvl 5 I can have 14 lvl 1 spells of any school from the wizard spell list.
I can prepare number of cantrips according to the wizard table and int + wizard level number of spells
Once chosen I cannot change the spells after char creation, only add more spells when i find them in session through other's spell books and scrolls
Now my question is, is the above true? if not, what am I getting wrong?
2014 or 2024 rules?
2014 rules
What type of thing are you thinking of going for
Like which class
Hello
Yeah this all checks out.
Assuming you'd levelled up from one and not just blinked into existence. You'd be limited to 2 level 3 spells.
And either 4 or 6 level 2 spells (depending on if you chose level 3s)
Umm, I am new, I need some help to learn.
What do you need help with?
character Of course, I need good fighter, but I don't know where to start, Last time I had created character, that's.. bad for me '-'
With fighter u basically need to choose if your going to be dexterity or strength based
If you chose dexterity u should go for ranged and finesse wepons and if your strength based you should go for more close range wepons
What subclass are you think if going for?
What do you want to do with your fighter?
There really isn't just one way to build a fighter.
In general, your highest ability score should be in the thing(s) that you will use the most, but this is true really for all characters. So, for example, if you want to be good at attacking with a bow, your highest score should be in Dexterity.
Your second or third highest should probably always be Constitution.
Every other stat choice is really what appeals to you.
Hello ! I’m new to D&D but I already learn some of the basic stuff and already have a character set to play. I been struggling at finding a group or joining in one. I’m afraid of making mistake when joining in a campaign that probably already started or joining anew one with more experience players so I’m not sure what to do
Hello if im buying a dnd called castle ravenloft do i buy a master guide book to it too because i cant find it
Once you find a game, talk to the DMs and Players. They can tip you off as to the style of game they play. It also allows you to determine if you are a bad fit. Maybe they play on a day that is bad for you, or maybe they act everything out and you are uncomfortable with that, or maybe their game is dark and you are not interested in that. Or maybe they only want someone who joins to play a Cleric.
A good discussion with players and DM is something everyone should do when starting / joining a game.
I think strength is best choice for fighter
It depends on what kind of weapons you want to go for, ranged/finesse (dex) fighters are just as capable as strength-based ones
Tbh even on Str fighter i like 12-14 dex
Cool go for that then
What rules are u on (2014 or 2024)
I don't know these rules, 2024 is safest for new player?
Both are good to use but 2024 would probably be a safe bet for new players since it addressed some of the gaps from 2014
I do think the 2024 rules definitely do a better job of teaching how to play and how to fill out a character sheet.
And of the new games being started, I'd suspect more of those will use the 2024 rules than the 2014 ones.
But honestly, it's fine to get started with either version. The game still plays out generally the same way regardless.
How would someone start rp within a server?
DM sets the scene and asks the players, “How does your character act? What does your character feel in this moment?” etc. then let the players describe what their character feels or how they act in that moment.
I was thinking some type of dwarf
Ohh OKEINOKEI
Hello
Dwarf is a species, not a class. Think of a class as a mechanical bag of features and skills that roughly define what your character is good at
Species sort of do the same, but their mechanics are much less impactful on your day to day gameplay
In any case if you wanted a quick rundown on the official classes in the game I suggest checking out the free Basic Rules linked in #learn-to-play and this channel’s pins
OHHH like healer and stuff?
Class is their job. Species is what creature they are
kinda. "Healer" is not one of the classes, but its that type of concept
Honestly it’s probably best to read the summaries of each class page to see what thing you vibe with.
Traditional MMO or video game roles like “tank-healer-dps” don’t really exist in the game
wsg yall im completely clueless about this dnd thing
any tips on how to get started would fr help thx
As an example, Cleric gets the most healing abilities but isn’t a “healer.” Likewise, Paladin and Barbarian get a lot of defensive abilities but aren’t “tanks”
A lot of people recommend watching people play on things like YouTube. I found joining a beginner friendly game was a lot easier as I’m a more physical learner
oh ight
reccomend any channels or specific videos?
Welcome! I suggest checking out #learn-to-play and this channel’s pins for a bunch of newbie resources, including the free rules! I also suggest making a practice character as you flip through them for practice. The more work you do learning on your end the easier it will be to find a group, though you might get lucky and get a DM/group that’s willing to teach one-on-one.
Of course, we’re always happy to help answer any questions you might have
Oh word
appreciate it fr
OHHH I get let me go look at classes rq
If you wanted to check out some fun D&D YouTubers, I recommend:
- Ginny Di
- JoCat
- The Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role (sort of outdated since it was made for 2014 5e, before the 2024 update came out, but there’s a lot of crossover)
Thx mr light
imma check them out fr
As a fair warning, I do recommend D&D YT as a learning supplement, not as a way to learn by itself.
Nah im fr just tryna get into the whole lore/character/world building aspect
basically what im lookin for with this dnd thing yk
Also as a warning, I recommend staying away from D&D YouTubers who mainly do YT shorts content. Quite a few do sensational posts about “OP combos” and “cool rules interactions!” That end up actually not following or significantly bending the rules
Arent the rules entirely distinct with each world and fr entirely customizable tho?
No, not really. D&D is a game with structured rules, but flexible story and lore
The base rules are consistent regardless of setting. A DM can adjust as they like, but the assumption is we're all using the same shared framework of rules to understand each other, both when playing and discussing.
As an analogy, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing Uno at your place, a coffee shop, or on the other side of the country; the rules of Uno stay the same
word
"Homebrew" is the term used for fan-made content, which could be changes to the rules or adding in things that don't exist, but those are more akin to mods for a video game. You wouldn't say "minecraft has guns" just because some fan made a mod where they exist
But we HIGHLY recommend that new players avoid homebrew content while they are learning how to play
HELLO everybody!
can someone tell me how i could play or possibly even join a online session of dnd? i have 3 games played of dnd so i kinda know the basics. ty :))
Welcome
If you're looking for a group to play with, the #find-a-game channel has instructions for how to find one
thank you very much kind sir
That's a race not a subclass but it's good for a strenth based fighter
Hey guys I’m joining my first ever campaign (they’re already into it, so I know the DM will be helping me out as a total newbie). It’ll be my session 0, but I was wondering if anyone could help give me some tips beforehand!
I’m wanting to play as an archer who hunts magical beasts - or a great sword warrior that hunts them with a shortbow for engaging before charging in.
I’m not sure if those are even realistic for dnd so I can adjust if need be!!
Very much reasonable for D&D a Ranger or a Fighter
These are my player tips: #dnd-newcomers message
Ultimately, be someone folks want to play with. Easier said than done, of course, but if you're mindful of everyone's fun (including yours), you should be fine!
Is one inherently better than the other for it? When I hear ranger I think Aragorn as strider, and fighter makes me think of Aragorn in RotK lol
A player's ability to use a Greatsword and their ability to use a Shortbow are a little at odds with one another, but not terribly so. Usually you'll want to focus on one or the other, if those are your preferred options.
Ahhh okay, would a shortbow and handaxe go together better? A little more of an exploring the wild/adventurer take?
The difference of fighter vs ranger is what other things you wish to do besides killing. Rangers also add some spells and or animal friends so not pure focus on killing. A fighter is a machine for the kill and can focus hard on doing so, but that limits their versatility a bit. These mostly apply as I go higher in levels
Not without some highly specific builds, unfortunately. Simply put, weapons are classified between two general categories: whether they use your Strength or Dexterity scores.
Weapons that use Dexterity are ranged options like Shortbow and Longbow, as well as melee weapons that have a specific tag called the Finesse property.
Weapons that use Strength are all other melee weapons.
So a character that makes use of a bow could also make very good use of a Shortsword, Scimitar, or Dagger, for example. But things like Axes or bigger weapons would use an entirely different stat.
sup yall
No, I would recommend looking into finesse wepons like shortswords rappers and daggers
Welcome!
ayo so i have no idea how to play, how to make a character or how mechanics and things work
Well to play you'll need a party. Either online or in person
Are there any dice stores near you? They're good for hosting campaign searches

Welcome! The best place to start is with the Free Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Ayo , some stuff i know is classes, multi class based by level, the player and host diferences, the storytelling and sessions, races and thats all i think
Im just not sure if to make a character all i need is ,name, race, class, info and background, and gear . Do i also have to make its skill points or something?
The character-creation process is detailed in the rules!
oh my bad
That's a good place to start!
And yeah, chapter 2 of the Basic Rules does a good job of walking through the steps for character creation.

For ability scores specifically...
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

Hey guys can anyone help me with how an character sheet works?
Have you seen the visual guide on this site? https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
Sure thing. First things first though, have you read the basic rules of the game yet? It'd be hard to fill in the boxes if you don't know what they mean

Hi
Welcome
hi
as a professional newcomer i just dm as i seem fit 😎
my players love it so who cares 😭
Hi everyone! As new as it gets here :)
if you and your players are having fun, then that's great, and you should keep it up. But if you aren't playing by the normal rules of the game, then its hard for us to have a discussion about it in this server, since we don't have a basis of shared understanding about the game we're playing. If you warp the rules too much, you may reach a point where you're really just doing freeform role playing instead of Dungeons and Dragons
hi friends, i just started playing dnd in the last month or so and im loving it. i look forward to meeting friends within the community! happy pride 🙂
Welcome!
i dont warp the rules significantly much, it is in general regular dnd rules, i just make my players role for stupid shit lmao
stuff like role for acrobatics when throwing their goblin child into water
i can be a DM for ur next session if u want (im also beginner)
i mean i started dnd like over a year now but still
im new to dming
im currently in two new campaigns, but as soon as one of these wrap up id love to!!
Just fyi this is not the correct channel for advertising or organizing a game.
yippeee
alr we can yap in dms then

im confused on the shapechanger for the changeling race
is it like you have to see them in person or like an image of said person?
My rule is seen them live in person, or through scrying, basically to get the full 3d effect, you have to have seen them in 3d.
hey fellas, i've been interested in getting into D&D for a while now but I havent really had people to want to learn the game with me so i've never bothered, anyone know where i'd go to find a game to join or some way to learn the basics?
what exactly do PCs buy in town? I'm not entirely sure the use of general store items
ok thanks
does anyone now any websites that make pngs for your character pieces like roll 20. I seemed to have used one before just I forgot what is was called
not including the popular hero forge
in roll 20 my bad
Free image viewers can often do this type of conversion. I don't know if I can list one here without rules violating, but they do the trick.
😁 Its's called token stamp
Anything in general adventure equipment probably. Rope, rations, tools, etc
Excuuuuuse me!
Is the Wordy One in the right place to get started with this whole d&d thing?? 😏
An online friend is getting me into a campaign to get started but I'm getting a bit impatient to get started.
Thought that perhaps I could begin a new character with another active group?

So my first campaign will be strixhaven. I’m totally lost on a beginner friendly character and would love any sort of advice for which class/subclass to use! Sorry if this is the wrong channel!!
Welcome! If you're looking for simplicity, the best classes would be those without magic, such as Fighter, Barbarian, Monk, or Rogue.
Are all games/campaigns/sessions all done at specific dates and times?
Are there no free campaigns that continuously run for people to join?
Like, if I wanted to create a character and jump into a campaign now?
#find-a-game will help you find or post what yer looking for
super easy instructions to follow
You can certainly try and get into a game immediately but most games take time to organize and coordinate schedules.
So do set your expectations appropriately as you search for a game/group to join.
Never mind, don't think I'll get into all that here, will just wait for my friend to start the campaign and I'll learn/play and get my party rich there.
Will be easier than trying to get into things around here, I think.
But tyvm for the info.
So I could be a scout rogue in lorehold who has a focus on studying archaeological ruins, and gathering relics - but with the intent of selling them on the black market (if the dm allows it) or to share freely with students able to use the relics/tomes I’ve come across?
I’ve never played so I’m not really sure if this is realistic or viable
OH DANGGGGG thats a cool backstory for a rogue!!!!
there are bits that a DM would have to be ok with such as, do folks study archaeological ruins per say. but that can be tweeked.
Ohhh okay okay, that makes sense. I’ll find out tomorrow the specifics - it’ll be my session 0! The campaign is already started and everyone is level 4, so I’ll definitely be tailoring my character to the ongoing story!
The only thing that could be an issue is the Lorehold background, since that background is intended to be setting specific, and is balanced as such
But as long as your DM has given you the go ahead then that’s fine!
“So the players are trying to uncover the reasons behind things going wrong at the school a a mysterious destructive ooze.”
I just got this before sending my idea - so I think I need to make some changes lol
maybe not. i can see how your idea can help. work with your DM before changin too much
Maybe like a scout rogue who’s used to searching the library for ancient/forgotten texts, the reason for joining the campaign late is that I only just came back from a long excursion into the library and with it I’ve brought a few texts thought long lost?
I don’t want to overcomplicate my character or over-insert myself though
again a great idea. run these thoughts by yer dm and they should help ya finalize it
If your referring to a character reference if you have bg3 ironicly it’s quite good lol
I was talking about a png creator website for pieces and stuff. There’s a website called token stamp I spent 30 minutes looking for. You can make character pieces to download onto the websites you play the games on. I used it for a game quite recently I just forgot the name of the website I was hoping someone else would now what I was talking about and save me some time.
Oh you mean tokens! E er used that one I use fateful force
Never
been thinking about trying dnd out, is there a book i have to read first or would i just ask a dm to teach me
also how do i make a character thats not just me
like you know how jack black plays himself in like every movie, i kinda wanna avoid that
#learn-to-play and check out the pinned messages here in the channel
I'd recommend giving the free rules a check
thanks
Free basic rules chapters 1 and 2
Idk if this is the right channel but for the "find familiar" spell, is it like you are summoning a creature or a kinda ghost version of that creature?
Your litterly summoning a creature
It’s actually more like summoning a ghost. The rules for Find Familiar state that the familiar is “a spirit that takes an animal form”
If you mean appearance-wise, it’s largely up to you. It’s common to make the familiar appear as just the animal you choose itself or a spectral version of it. As long as you aren’t trying to gain a mechanical advantage by changing its appearance most flavorings should be fine
So cain i summon doro
Who?
There is no official “doro” creature so as long as it meets the qualifications for the Find Familiar spell and your DM approves it it should be ok to be used as a familiar
You can only summion what the spells says you can summion which is normally a creature like a bird or a cat depends mostly
Just made a character using a character sheet, what are the next steps?
ty, i was thinking that the character im making has a kinda friendship with the familiar and uses the find familiar spell to help give it a form. but idk if that would be a bad idea
Any kind of friendship is better discussed with your DM
It’s not really a case covered by the rules

Hi, which rulebook should I read, the 2014 or the 2024? (Same with the free versions on dndbeyond)
I'm relatively new and I'm not sure where to start/which one's more widely used
2024 is where the 5th edition game is going, 2014 is where 5th edition started. You can use 2014 materials with 2024. I think 2024 is better for helping new folks get started.
So I guess I’d lean with start with the 2024 materials.
i will say i think the later into 2014 something released the better it feels for 2024

So how do we play ? Where can i go to find a party ?
Always wanted to play dnd !
Watched a lot of videos on youtube of ppl playing . Like the cast of baldurs gate and many others . So i have a basic understanding of the game .
There's a section for looking for gaming as a DM or player under Find a Game. I myself am an old DM.. haven't played in decades but getting back into it.

Hello, an interesting question.
How many Dice is recamonded?
Depends on who you ask. I myself think one set is generally enough.
I see, since just their some scenarios where you need say two d12s
You just roll twice, or however many times. But some folks like to collect dice! So there's no single recommendation.
Ohhhhh I see, thanks
Collecting dice is dangerous, it becomes an addiction. Heh. I myself have like 10 sets.
Some skills or rolls can involve up to 6 of a dice type.
Are you a so called dice goblin?
Asking because it isn’t on the dnd beyond site without buying the PHB again - if I make a thief rogue (character is starting at level 4), can I pick two feats? I want to use a short bow and dual daggers.
The character I made on the site has alert and savage attacker - but does that mean I can’t duel wield?
I wanted to do dual wield and skulker or lucky and skulker. Sorry if this is the wrong channel. Just trying to figure things out a little!
Are you using 2024 or 2014 rules?
2024
Though in collecting stuff I'm more like a dragon. I hoard media.
Well, you'd have your feat care of your background then one at level 4.
So I could pick an origin feat (say alert) and then any other feat (say skulker)?
I’m just confused because on the site it only displays the free options since I’m using a physical PHB, so skulker doesn’t appear.
Or could I choose both lucky (or dual wielder) and skulker?
You pick a background, which has a feat tied to it. Alert and Lucky are both origin feats tied to backgrounds. You could pick Dual Wielder or Skulker as your level 4 feat.
Oh sorry - I picked criminal for the background so I’d have alert, and then I could pick skulker for level 4.
Is alert “useful” or should I change my background to something “better”?
That's a better question for #character-discussion!
Ok thank you!
As a human would I get another feat? I could have skilled (human), alert (background), skulker (level 4)?
That way I don’t dive into magic I think? Maybe keeps the game a little easier?
I'm not sure if that makes the game easier one way or another, but yes, you would have an additional origin feat (like Skilled).
Read through #find-a-game for details about using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels!

hello
Welcome!

Is anyone able to share content on d&d beyond while in a campaign? I’d like to create a character but certain choices I can’t do due to needing to buy things
yes anyone in the campaign that has sharing active share all content with everyone in it
Do I lose access to the character if I leave the campaign?
I believe it retains anything it already had but can't add new level information without having access to the same book, but don't 100% quote me on that
Bear in mind soliciting and joining a campaign purely to share content is against both this server’s rules and D&DBeyond’s TOS
Gosh I didn’t even think about someone doing that. I just assumed a character was stated o in a campaign that died but the player didn’t want to lose the character
I mainly wanted to do a campaign where I can be a dark elf
But I can’t do a dark elf just normal elves
Drow Elf is a free species with the basic free rules. No need to purchase anything or have anything shared with you.
Oh really
Well thank you
Good afternoon, I’m interested in playing DND but I don’t know where to start. Can someone provide me with some tips?
same
Players Handbook is always a good place to start for any edition you're wanting to play. There are also all sorts of free resources online where the rules are, or watch channels on Youtube. Critical Role is the most popular one.
I've found all sorts of places for free resources, most of it's for 5th edition.
Is there a way I can play via discord or other online platforms?
Yeah. Discord is fine with bots, and there's Roll20.net that's free.
Tabletop Simulator is also a good option if you have Steam and 15$.
I like TTS since it has physics and actual game pieces, books, etc. included in most recreated games on it.
I would definitely check out this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play , both of which have a bunch of newbie resources including the free Basic Rules
As for online play, typically you’d use a variety of tools such as:
- A communications platform (e.g. Discord)
- A Virtual Tabletop (VTT) to facilitate the game visually and sometimes mechanically (e.g. roll20, Foundry, Sigil, Owlbear Rodeo)
- A character sheet hoster (e.g. D&DBeyond) that may have automatic VTT integration (e.g. roll20)
- A dice roller that is usually integrated into the other tools (e.g. Avrae bot for Discord, most VTTs have a dice roller, DDB has its dice roller integrated into its character sheets
Hello! I'm very new to actually being able to play dnd, though I know the basics, does anyone know a good place to play a campaign?
Im fairly new iv played in a one-shot last year and made characters but not a alot of actual play time
so ive seen alot of different rules, like 2024, 2014? i only have the player's handbook to go off, is there major differences i should know about?
It's a lot of small changes mostly. But here are some main points you'll notice:
- Character ability score increases are now provided by Backgrounds in 2024, species/races in 2014
- In 2024 classes get their subclasses at level 3 instead of it being variable in 2014
- In 2024 Inspiration can be used on all rolls and is now retroactive instead of prospective in 2014 (it's now also named 'Heroic Inspiration' instead)
- Lots of wording changes (the three main rolling types, saves, checks and attacks are now collectively named 'D20' tests in 2024)
You can find a conversion guide here that highlights the changes: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/guide/converting-to-srd-5.2.1.pdf
Overall, the differences aren't huge. It's still 5e and you may not even notice which version you're playing. But it matters for smaller rule interactions.
This is my first time running a campaign and I need to make monsters and idk what to do for monsters so do they have like all stats or only certain stats
Monsters use special monster statblocks that make running them easier. Here's an overview:

And here's a large list of free to use monsters:

I’m from Calgary and want to get into dnd how do I do this my friends are struggling to fit any more players now into their game so I can’t join them and I’ve never played dnd
I'd recommend trying to look for a game in #looking-for-players (make sure to let them know that you're a new player and you should be able to find some people that can teach you the ropes)
Do you recommend online or in person gameplay
Also thanks
oo, I think in person would probably be a better handson experience however I've done 99.99% of my dnd experience online for the past 3 years and loved the majority of it
either option is a good choice, just find what works for you
How would I do it in person? Can that looking for players section still help?
uhhh possibly but for the most part you'd be better off searching up local groups or gamestores in your area that run dnd groups, try reddit as well if you'd like or any facebook groups etc
just make sure to do everything smartly and safely
Yeah thanks
Can someone teach me how to play DnD? Im new and got interested but dont know almost anything
