Like I'm considering a tattoo on my pcs eye and he can use his eyes to snipe at ppl
So if he closes one eye and aims he can shoot or something
They could just cast out of their eyes if they wanted to fwiw, flavor is free
Do you mean literally snipe?
That would be homebrew. If you're new to the game I'd generally suggest not adding homebrew to your game until you've played it with just the core rules. Without knowing how the core game rules and mechanics work, it's easy to create wildly unbalanced homebrew.
Hello Everyone. I am a bit of a newbie to this scene. It's been some 40 years since I last played D&D. I've always held a place in my heart for the game. I still have an original DnD set from the early 80s that i've held onto.. Where can I find folks my age to hang with?
TYY can you recommend* whoops a spell that's not home brew?
The whole server but we don't age discriminate (except in Looking For Game posts where it's okay). For older editions of D&D we have #dnd-elder-editions.
Are you playing a wizard? If so you can flavor the spell as being shot out of your eye - just don't mess with the mechanics of the spell or how spellcasting works.
OHHH thx
I have a question
actually I should be asking a dm
LOL since I haven't participated in a game before I'll wait until I'm done drawing my pc
Woahhh wait I have a better idea
NOOOO 😿
You did read our server rules right? 😉
Oh yeah I thought pictures weren't allowed not gifs too
Sorry!!
I'll keep that noted while chatting here lol
Well that gif was showing basically
Like a barrage of bullets
Or like magic(I'm my case)
It was like a pokemon I think
Cue the spell magic missile or once you get to really high levels meteor swarm
This channel exists to help new to D&D folks get started - don't worry about it!
Ty😭✌
Chat... I'm back.. 😕
So like any idea if there's like-- basically a halfling but bigger?
Like.. A human sized halfling 😕💔?
Cuz I didn't know they were short 😭💔
I think that’s just a human
Hey there 👋
Question, im a new D&D player and im gonna DM for our friend group of 6 players + me as DM.
Where do i start ? cus i dont know what rules i NEED to know before session 0 and what is the best thing to read / watch to prep? 🙂 and any tips? 😄 (i played DND like 5 years ago for about a year) but its vague for me rn 🙂 very excited and hope to get some help here 🙂
Honestly yea😪 but the halfling gets a silly ability

awesome cool! also one question i had, as a DM i was thining should i buy DM rulebook ? and if so, we play roll20 online dnd , is buying an online version ok ?
and we wanted to go for 5e 2024, is that fine for a new dm ? or is 2014 recommended
Aside from that, Five Room Dungeon, Sly Flourish's advice, use the 2024 rules and don't put money down until you're happy it's worth it. The Free Rules have plenty.
Hi 🙂
Also bear in mind most digital products are licenses, not property you own, and if you buy on a specific platform that's not transferable to another.
Howdy.
hello
Getting started with D&D? Check here for links to useful info: #dnd-newcomers message
Oooh perfect, thanks :à
i have a lot of question but i will searching by myself first
but isnt it more handy to have digital versions if u DM larger campaigns online ? so u can CNTRL F4 search stuff xd or is the book nicer to use in your opinion? Just asking since im clueless obviously
if a creature gets restrained by webs and then breaks free but remains in the web, at the start of their next turn do they get restrained again?
Playing on pencil and paper, but we’re leveling on roll20. I bought the 2024 PHB not realizing that tempest cleric isn’t on this version. I’m assuming I need to buy the 2014 edition? And if so, can I refund the 2024 version?
My DM asked me to do a proficiency check in perception. I have proficiency in perception skills. What is my proficiency bonus addition to my +2 wisdom modifier can someone assist?
What level are you?
1
Your proficiency bonus is +2. So the bonus would be total +4
How do I find those?
Not sure, it depends on the type of character sheet you are using. It should be under "proficiency bonus"
I'm glad I helped
Hello there... new guy here

I’m a little confused on how leveling up works exactly. How do I know what stats to increase, what spells I learn, and what my ac is? Playing on tabletop
You read the basic rules yet?
What’s up peeps
Shortly, you gain whatever your class and subclass tell you. On the class page, you have a table that shows what you get on each level
And when you learn new spells, you generally get to choose them from your class' spell list
Your AC without any armor or other features that i crease it is 10 + your dexterity modifier, but if you wear armor your AC calculation becomes the one shown by your armor
are necromancers not good/fitting to play as? i seen them mostly used as villians so idk if there is some rp/gameplay stuff that makes it meh
Depends entorely on the campaign, but outside of whether the FM has some special mentions about them being inherently villainous, they are a way to play as any other
Though a thing to keep in mind is that if your vision of a necromancer is commanding a horde of undead, that's not really what you get. You usually command at most a couple of zombies
Hello there
I was wondering if this was the appropriate place to ask for a bit of help with coming up with characters. Yes, I am absolutely new to the culture of Dnd so please forgive my ignorance to everything and anything.
sorry if i am inturrupting somthing
ah ok, just wondering since if monk stuff doesnt work out for me im thinking of doing some summoning stuff to fight for me type of deal, idk if there is a class that fits that
Most spellcasting classes get at least some summoning spells
#character-discussion would be for talking character specifics, though depending on the kind of help you need this channel might also help
Thank you for the reply. The kind of help I am looking for is probably one with opinions. I did a bit of looking into and know there are basic things I must come up with such as name, class, etc.
I want someone to give me basic feedback such as "you still have to come up with ___ category" or "you can add _"
I will give character-discussion a visit
thank you
I am right now actually
for a level 1 tempest cleric, do they get the option of learning fog cloud and thunderwave, or do they automatically have them and then they can choose more spells to learn?
So generally in dnd most classes dont really need multiple summoning spells, as generally summon spells require you to keep concentration on the spell.Aka, ya cant cast multiple summoning spells.
So pick any magic caster and it should do the job just fine.
Some subclasses like "circle of the sheperd" for druid and "necromancer" for wizard give some good buffs for your lil critters
tysm then, i wanted to do a very mini verison of something similar to the solo leveling anime
Those spells are permanently in your bag of tricks. Clerics are one of the few classes that get to pick and choose any spell (that they can use) that they have at their disposal. The only thing they need to do in order to alter their selection of spells is to have a long rest. Basically they have to sleep.
...Unless you're something like an elf or autognome.
she's going to be playing a half-elf
But these two spells that you mentioned will always be with you.
A half-elf's blood is a bit more diluted so you have to sleep like everyone else. 🤭
They can't be put to sleep by evil wizards so at least you have that going for you.
Also getting charmed is harder for you which is also good. People usually don't like to be brainwashed.
you can find players for your campaign or a group/campaign that fits you or just a discord server/community of people
Hello. i am brand new to all of this. i'v known about Dnd For some time now but never had the time to try it till recently. and i am interested in giving it a try for some casual fun.
May i have some advice on finding a group or anyone who can Take in a rookie like me?
Are They only use VC?
@remote yew yes most servers do take in brand new players but be careful because most of them aren’t that good
Whether a game uses VC or not depends entirely on the group. It would geberally be mentioned, but if uncertain you could always ask them
I see o,o. are there any good one's you would recommend?
And I'd disagree on "most of them aren't that good" claim
Group accepting new players doesn't automatically somehow make them bad, and I've had plenty of good games where new players were included, both as a player a dm
There are things to keep an eye out on games, but them accepting new players I don't feel is one of those 🤔
@remote yew I’m trying to PM you
ooooh. this is gona be harder then i thought- 🤔
Do you mean DM? if so it says its blocked because you are set to friends only?
Let me friend request you
Hey, does anyone have any reccomendations of servers for new-comers?
Check out #looking-for-community which is people sharing their servers
Do i have to make a specific character sheet like those comonly printed in paper or can i just use a site to help? like the Roll20 character creator
Yes but it's probably best to check with your DM and group because they may not run their games on Roll20
(What I mean is you can make your character sheet using what tools you like and make sense for who you're playing D&D with)
I understand, it's just that i really don't know how to build that common character sheet yet, i'm gonna try and find a group that can accept a rookie. Thanks
Then read through the free rules while you make your character - the first chapter discusses playing the game and the 2nd cover character creation: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Feel free to ask any specific questions as you run across them.

ye cause i currebtly have no character sheets
Some dms prefer to help with making it in line with their campaign, and others want prepared
i see
Basically, u should prob make a bare-bones sheet
And then see what the campaign ur trying to join wants/needs
i will try to find a dm that helps me make character as i have absolutely no idea how to make one
ok
lol, yah keep an eye out for campaigns that say “new player friendly” in particular
hey a friend gave me a barebones sheet take a look at it and tell me if its good\
umm can we not upload images
U can dm me if I want
Short Rest
A short rest is a period of downtime, at least 1 hour long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds.
A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total. The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below.
So I have a question for example I'm level 3 fighter that means I've 3d10 for short rest and my con mod is +3 and I rolled full on that dice that means I regain missing amount , right or are we adding anything extra on those dices?
Yes but you don’t have to use all of your hit dice unless you are about out of hit points
It would be a d10+3 for each roll
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
You’re welcome
Hey so with spellcasting you have a spell slot and a known spell, my character knows the first level spell ice knife due to magic initiate (feat) in his bg, now when I try to cast it in avrae in did not work, saying that I don't have a 1st level spell slot. I tried a lr and it still didn't work. But the magic initiate feat gives you 2 cantrips and a first level spell
So why can't I use it
I'm very confused
Whats your class?
It is rogue but my origin is sage with the magic initiate feat so is should be able to spellcaast
Isnt it a requirement for the magic initiate feat to know spells
I don't think so, it just gives you the ability to use spells
2 cantrips and a first level spell
If it was I think it would have said so in dnd beyond
Yeh okay, should be able to cast the 1st level spell once for free per long rest (2024)
Yeah so why can't I use it in avrae after a long rest
Try #ddb-avrae-help instead, probably more appropiate place to ask
Thanks and sorry
Yeh nw
Hello people, i just started dnd, and im really confused
there are editions, classes, sub classes
can someone help me?
you have the option to cast a greater variety of spells
you do not get more spell slots
Hello there!
The current edition of the game is the 5th edition. People refer to it as 5e.
5e has two 'versions', commonly referred to as 2014 and 2024, for the dates they came out. They are compatible, but it's recommended to start with 2024 if you have the option.
The basic rules are free, you can have a look here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024

And here you can see additional helpful links 👆
Thank you Deva!
editions are the versions of the rules, like new versions of Madden or Cod or whatever. Same basic bones, new language
Classes are character roles, their job etc. it defines what they do. Fighters are good with weapons, clerics are divine magic users, wizards throw fireballs etc
Subclasses are specialisations within a class. A Fighter might specialise in magic and become an Eldritch Knight, or psychic powers and be a Psi Knight. Or tactics and become a Battle Master
The current edition is 5e which has recently had a big update/refresh/"game of the year" release at the end of last year. They redid all the "core rulebooks" (the player's handbook, the DMs Guild, and the monster manual) with stuff like changing how rules work to make them work better or easier to read, adding new rules, taking out rules that did work so well, yada yada
It's compatible with the OG core rulebooks and everything released, just the new hotness with like a decade of knowing how the game is played behind it
Ohh i get it!
one person in our group is going to be tempest cleric, one potentially wants to be a spore druid. what resources do I need to be able to accurately level them up and give them the specific spells?
You'd need the 2014 Player's Handbook (for the Tempest Domain), and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (for Circle of Spores).
Those two books would also give you a pretty broad selection of spells, too.
everything else in those books besides the stuff pertaining to the two classes, won't be overly relevent will they?
If you're planning to play with the 2024 core rules, yeah, you won't get much else from the 2014 PHB.
buy the 2024 phb then just find the leveling information for tempest and spore online?
TCOE would be the more useful of the two, but even that has had parts of it replaced by the 2024 PHB.
I mean, you could buy the books online for cheaper, but you'd still have to buy the full book.
D&D Beyond used to let you buy subclasses individually, but that's no longer an option.
we're playing on tabletop so just trying to figure out the best way of handling it. It's everybody's first time playing so I want to be as prepared as possible
mine included
You could also simply tell your players if they want to play with options from books you don't already have, they're welcome to do so, but that they'll need to get those books and bring them to the game.
Though, if you're all new, then The Simpler, The Better™, in my opinion.
Then it's up to them to decide whether their want justifies the expense.
If they're looking for a free-but-temporary option, they could see if their local library has those books available.
I never thought of the library. They have TCOE in stock which is perfect. Guess I'm getting a library card
Hey so me and a few other people are trying to get into dnd, we’re all separated by distance so we’re just trying to find any good resources that won’t drain our wallets, also wondering how we’d find a experienced dm
There are free core rules on D&D Beyond, iirc. Not everything, but enough to run a game.

Welcome! The best place to start is with the Free Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
thanks!!! It doesn’t show up for me tho bc of weird parental controls ;-;
That one I unfortunately can't help with.
💀 well thanks anyways but is there like a specific thing I have to do to make a character like what’s the criteria?
Unfortunately there's quite a few rules surrounding character creation. To begin, you'll need to pick a species, a background, and a class. The list of options for all of those are in the document you're having difficulty accessing. You'll need to assign ability scores for your character as well, afterwards.
My recommendation would be to solve the issue with your ability to access the website before continuing.
Silvia, can you check the pins in this channel? The links from the bot are there too
Can’t because my parents controls on my phone so discord glitches out and doesn’t let me access stuff so I can’t see pins and some profiles unless they’re my friend n stuff
I believe their Internet service providers are blocking the entire WotC website, so the bot commands won't be able to help much, beyond giving overviews.
What about here? https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Rules:Free Basic Rules (2024)
I could probably do it on my computer but I’m not home right now
OH IT WORKS THANK YOU
Good call, iamrazorwing !
Thanks so much!!!
Got ya
any tips on running Curse of Stradh? First dnd session running as dm
#1029833015423143957 would be the best place to ask!
Also, semi-serious, don't run Curse of Strahd as a first-time DM!
Enjoy larping as Strahd
Iirc, being a player is free and the DM licence is like $50 ish, normally.
Should I tell the players that Im running the curse of stradh or keep as a surpise?
Tell them. It'll probably be better for everyone if they know what they're getting into so they can make appropriate characters and calibrate their expectations.
Hi
Always tell your players. It doesn't exactly set a good precedent if your campaign starts out with a lie.
Groups run best when there's a shared expectation.
Can someone please dm me and my friend on dnd beyond if u can please dm me
being a player is free?
didnt knew that, thanks mate!
Yeah, pretty sure. The license is to host a server, where players join for free. That's how I remember it working.
Check the website, check their discord. GL!
Thanks mate, thats gonna save me a few fatty euros.
Np. Either way if you do have to drop some cash, it's a one-time purchase, so it's not so bad.
Whodis what are you needing?
Id tell them its CoS
Hey guys, brand new to D&D and the server, I'm basically looking for someone who is willing to spend 20 mins with me on a call to explain things to me, I've agreed to be DM for my 7 friends that wanna play this and I need to know what to do. Dm me if you have any time, it'd be so greatly appreciated
To temper your expectations, I don't believe many can give you a sufficient, ad-libbed primer on how to DM in just 20 minutes.
In the simplest broad strokes, the basic gameplay loop looks something like this:
- The DM describes a scenario. Place, people, etc. Usually open ended, i.e. "what do you all do?"
- The players respond by declaring what they do. Dice may be rolled if the DM believes there should be a chance of failure, or if the outcome is otherwise uncertain.
- The DM describes the result.
- Rinse and repeat.
what does sorrcers do
Can I improv the whole thing?
yes a dm is like everything
I was thinking of basing it off of the mortal engines world, so I technically have a premade world there
Cast magic with Charisma.
I've also been listening to podcasts on it and people playing
anit that wizrds gang
You can try. Don’t recommend it for a new DM though.
It can, but I wouldn't recommend trying to improv the whole thing off the cuff your first time out the gate. It helps to get your sea legs a little.
ngl i only chose sorrcers cuz i thought of jjk 😭 🙏
Ive got 7 people to teach TS 😭😭
My recommendation would be to try and run one of the starter set adventures (Stormwreck Isle, Lost Mines, Icespire Peak) and then jump off into a homebrew game.
100% this.
can you play dnd online?
?tag new online
tuff
Wizards have to learn spells, Sorcerers can just do magic from the get go. Wizard uses Intelligence, Sorcerer uses charisma.
Whats a hollow?
hollow purple by gojo from jjk who he is a sorcerer
This is not JJK.
I have no idea what any of that is?
cuz its from a anime
This is better than anime.
AND IT IS JJK thats why i chose sorcerer
Oh ok, good luck
so i could black flash people with 10% crit luck
Not everything from other properties translates well into the D&D game.
Flavor is usually fine (how you describe things), game mechanics not so much.
From what I know of JJK, black flash is not really a thing in D&D. Or at least I don't know of a mechanic that emulates it all that well
ehh will i will say uh it increased strength by what every the dice role is
is that a vaild move or nah
Nope, I would reccomend learning D&D before trying to HB in mechanics from other media.
Actually, now that I think about it you might be able to flavor True Strike as a black flash-like deal.
ngl if people liek yk wana play dnd
id lock in but since no one in like my area does not know what dnd even means
i just gave up 💔
You can play online,
and who finna play with me?
People online
To put it very simply sorcerers in DnD are just people who were born with magic. Their specialty is to make spells do things they don't normally, such as make them stronger or alter their elements. This is something other spellcasters such as wizards or clerics can't normally do.
In a way they're the superheroes of DnD. The medieval fantasy version of superheroes. They are born with powers rather than have to work for them. Some might even acquire powers due to an accident or some other event.
In any case I highly recommend that you read the basic rules just like the others have suggested.
im new to dnd and i really want to become an dm of an group who can teach me how this game works
Tygo,
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
To say that I'm a noob at dnd would be an understatement. I would like to play a game with an understanding DM and group that would help me learn.
U can look for folks to play it a group to join to play in
Bukkai, see my message from a few moments ago lol
I’m new to dnd and want to learn how to play fast because I want to join a club who plays
guys, whats that one spell that creates bullets or sum
No name,

😭 🙏 or like.. sum similar to creating bullets?
Magic missle?
tyyyy
Is that for a lvl 1?
yes
what class are u
should be there hold on
I will!
did you learn it when u built yer character?
when u created your character did u chose it as a spell you know
Can you give me ideals for creating a character
Chano
I want to make a knight character
Who is possessed by dark armor that causes pain and suffering
His group betrays him though
There is a LOT that goes in to making a character my friend. Follow the free rules and use D&D Beyond to walk through making a character. The items such as dark magical armor would be something you and your Dungeon Master (DM) would need to work towrds in the story
Im buat to do a dnd session for the first time as the DM i have 3 sessions as player before hand, any tips
relax, have fun, and dont be to fussy about the rules. do what feels right to u at that time. If you arent sure, make a quick decision. note what it was about and look it up later afterwards. then learn from the things u did correctly and adjust to do the things better next time.
Have imposter syndrome
Sounds fun
Thankyou dad
Don’t let the players split the Peruvian the main thing
I want to be a dm two but idk the first thing of dnd my friends told me that there just gonna put me as dm and see what happens
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

wtf did I type?
I am guessing you meant Party? lol
Party
Maybe it's a reference to drama llamas players?
Ah okay - yeah party makes much more sense
No I meant Peruvian
“What’s for dinner?”
“Peruvian.”
“Oh, this looks good! Do you want to split—”
“NO”
Peruvian is a another word for a person from Peru you cannibalist

See the bot post above! If you can't see the LFG channels, you should visit id:browse!
But how do I start a search looking for an entire group as a person who has never played. I don't have a full party so it wouldn't make sense for me to post in looking for dm and I'm not a dm so it wouldn't make sense for me to post in looking for players
I don't want to mislead anyone
Guys how do i look for dms or players ?
or how do i put my soul for sale for the masses
So you can post in #looking-for-dm on the off-chance that a GM will pick players from that pool. You don't need a full party to do that.
Or you can reach out to the GMs who post in #looking-for-players and express interest. Maybe they'll interview you, or maybe not.
Hi! 👋 I am completely new to DnD. Have absolutely no clue about rules or how to find a group. I have no one IRL to play with but have been interested in playing for some time. I have a character name and backstory chosen but thats it haha. Any tips? Videos I should watch etc.? Thanks very much for your help!

Should people give the party a heads up before splitting it. Happened in a session recently and we were split for a couple of sessions and I feel as though if he could have at least gave us a heads up beforehand would have been nice?
Prob thinking about it too much but yk
?
The dm needenth the warnings to split to party dramatically
I don't think that's a newcomer question per se, but a heads-up would be considerate.
I put it in here cause im new icl
This is what the channel is for:
Ask about the basics of D&D and learn to play!
It's not the catch-all for new folks regardless of the question or issue. Your question is really better in #dnd-discussion!
Mb
No worries!
nah as a DM if the party makes decisions that will split them up without them intentionally trying to then ill split the party. if say they get walled off in a dungeon by a trap wall... thats not something a DM should be giving anyone a heads up about.
Nah it was a player who did it
then its up to the party to role play talking them out of a silly idea, does happen more often then you would think though so i still reckon its fine. hopefully if the party lets them go off alone like that and the dm can see not everyone agrees he will give the people who split of a reason to think twice about it next time
i mean in one of my earlier campaigns i split off from my party at like level 2 and the dm had 2 half ogres cross my path 1 after the other. i managed to kill 1 (with lucky death save rolls) and hid from the second, after that i was hesitant to split off from the group knowing i had to drag my butt back to base with 1hp and a new trophy
Then the dm gets to shoot the call
either "no yall are staying together" or "sure you may split"
Just if anyone knows of best places for games located in AUS, just new to it and can play for 2/3 hrs most nights any help would be appreciated
Checkong with local game stores or libraries might be a good place to start. Could also try googling any nearby games
Hi umm im kinda new and wanted to find a group to play with, wht do i do

Oh alright thankss
Hey hey! I've never really played dnd before but I finally have the books. Is there a group that's willing to take a nooby?
Keep an eye out on #looking-for-players mentioning new player friendly
Thank you!
And ofcourse if theres a campaign that looks interesting to you but doesnt explicitly mention anything about new players just ask
Welcome guy
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
question about multiclassing, if you multiclass do you just get the semi basic stuff of what the class gets or can you choose a subclass of one of the two
When multiclassing into another class, you get all of the features listed on the class table, with a few exceptions. So you do get to pick a subclass for a class you multiclassed into once you reach the prerequisite level.
The things you don't get are most of the core class traits except for those that are listed in the multiclassing section of a given class.
ohhhh so classes have a special thing for multiclassing
i honestly thought it was a more homebrew thing of multiclassing i didnt know WoTC already made something for it
Yup. Check here for the fighter example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#BecomingaFighter
It's the difference between "As a level 1 fighter" and "as a multiclass fighter"
The 2014 rules have a slightly different setup.
tysm then
if i get the book that comes with the way of astral self thing i might do a thing of a barbian and monk multiclass if thats able to work
I suppose they would somewhat work together, though one major benefit of Astral Self is that you get to use your Wisdom to attack, instead of Strength and Dexterity. Barbarian really wants to use Strength.
I usually recommend trying to create your idea with a single class. Multiclassing can get a bit funky with how the different rules interact. Flavor can do a lot to get you to an idea without you needing to apply mechanics to support it.
Hey guys!
I'm new to this and wanted to try it out for some time.

Or the bot links are the same as the pins lol
Thanks man
I recommend checking out the links that Dyno posted, as they can help you get an overview of how the game works.
i was thinking of trying out the monk class and if it works out and i really like it, im thinking of buying the book online that contains the astral self subclass, and if i like that i might try to see if the rage feature and monk stuff would work out
although its very against on what you usually think of a calm/collected monk imo.
Trying it out first sounds like a good start.
ik this is reaching very #character-discussion type of discussion but i was just thinking of maybe making a character that is inspired by a character i like in an anime with similar abilities so a ghost-like figure being very mad would be awesome
although i think i can do the rage/mad part in the more roleplay aspect of the game now i think about it
this might be a dumb question but is away of astral self usable/good in 2024 5e?
aye wsg how do I start my first game of dnd
Hey where

bet, cheers mitcho
Yup, it's a fun subclass still.
i am very tempted to buy the book online if i like the monk class
jojo is probably my favorite show of all time so getting to pretty get an ablility very similar to it sounds so fun
helloo, I've never played D&D before and I have no idea really about it Ive just seen it around and I follow Avantris and it looks rlly fun, I dont know how to start :,D I hope this is the right channel for new ppl?
You're in the right place.
Usual advice is have a look around, check out the Free Rules, maybe put together a level one character to see how it works. Links and videos to follow:

I really want to start cuz it seems really fun, but im a little overwhelmed by everything
ohh okay, thank you :,D
Take it slow, and learn one piece at a time. Don’t worry about trying to memorize everything. You can always pull out a rule book while playing, and there will be 4-5 other people playing with you that can help remind you of anything you might forget
thank you :,D But is it okay to not be interested in roleplay? Cuz Im a bit too uh..mute/shy to be able to, but I do rlly enjoy it as a game itself
There’s no wrong way to play D&D as long as you and the people you are playing with are all having fun. But how much or how little you role play will come down to your group’s playstyle. You’ll want to find other people who enjoy playing the game the same way you do.
Popular perception of D&D has definitely shifted in recent years to be more of a role play focused, story telling game. The mechanics and strategy of combat and dungeon crawling are less important to most people then they used to be. But there definitely still are people that enjoy that “old school” style of play, where the game is focused on strategy first and story second
If the issue isn’t one of playstyle, but just that your too nervous to talk in front of other people, you could also consider playing text based games instead of voice ones. This is called “play-by-post” or PBP
Heyy! I've been wanting to play dnd for like forever now! I am very new to this stuff, and barely have an idea to how the game actually works. Does anyone have a recommendation for a site or youtube channel that explains the game rules (with the dice and stuff) in dummy language?
If you are entirely mute and you truly cannot speak, you may be accepted into a regular group and play text based. Or just join a text based campaign. Baldurs Gate 3 is also an option for the "game" feel of D&D without the roleplay
But for most people, the fun of D&D is the roleplay combined with other aspects
Atleast I think so
Most people are shy and awkward when it comes to roleplay for the first time lol
very normal thing
Check out Ginny Di on YouTube
Just playing with close friends helps
Thanks!
that wont judge you or be weird about anything
There's also some links just up-thread.
I'm more of selective mute, no matter how hard I try I have trouble speaking on vc, so most of my friends we just vc and I text while listening :,D and I have considered Baldurs Gate 3 but I mostly want to play with people, it seems more fun
BG3 has a multiplayer mode
hm well i'm not sure how to help you on that part but what the guy said above as long as you are having fun with whatever you are doing
not to demotivate you but it may be hard to find people that would accept one text based player character while the rest are non text based, it's usually one or the other
Text based games are very fun. I enjoy them about just as much as I enjoy voice games. Great for fans of writing.
For example, I am far more comfortable with the role of DM in a play by post game. Never tried to DM a voice game actually.
Change the # to a / Nobby
thsnks
Yes? The relationship between you and a DM is very similar to the relationship between a boyfriend and a girlfriend. If you feel like you two aren't a good fit you don't have to stay together.
Same for fellow players.
i havent talked to them yet
"Hey, I'm having a hard time making this game work due to the time difference. I've had a lot of fun, but I think I need to find another game that better fits my schedule."
...How do you even know the DM then?
Uh their are play by post campaigns
But I wouldnt count on a regular dm accomodating your mutism for vc campaigns
?tag new pbp
The dm to player ratio is way off, so generally, if a dm runs a voice chat campaign, theyll just go with whats practical
i dont i went to looking for dm and there he was
I'm going to need more information than that because I am not understanding what you are saying.
You asked if you could change your DM. If you don't have a DM, what DM are you trying to change?
im a new player i dont understand everything yet
If there's a game you don't want to join because of the timezone, just don't apply.
How can you cancel a date if you haven't even talked to the person or even mentioned to them the thought of going on a date with said person? Am I making sense?
but i want to join
But if that game isn't during a time that works for you, then how are you gonna join?
weekend
Is that game happening on the weekend?
The Looking for DM channel doesn't match you up with anyone like a multiplayer game matches you into a group. It's just a list of people, and you've gotta pick one that works for you
If the weekend is the only time you can play, and that game doesn't happen on the weekend, then you probably won't be able to play in that game.
yes as far as i know
Then what's the problem?
By the way I am going to tell you this right now. Finding a DnD group that is stable and that you get along with requires a lot of patience. It will take time. Possibly months.
I think they're fundamentally misunderstanding how the LFDM channel works
im dreunk
Maybe worry about it later, then.
Can D&D be used in a contemporary, non-fantasy setting? Or should I be looking else wear for that type of table play?
Like corporations, shady business, thriller, type setting
You can, sure.
But the farther you get away from the kind of stories D&D is built to tell, the harder it's going to be to tell that story using D&D.
It's not really built for that by default, so games in that kind of setting are harder to find and harder to set up and run. But it is possible.
If your game is still barbarians and wizards, but there's also computers, you could make it work.
Gotcha
Otherwise, there might be a different game better designed for telling the kind of story you're trying to tell.
The folks in #non-dnd-topics might have some suggestions if that's the case.
As before, to use the command to make a post on the looking for DM channel, replace the # in your message with a /
Ah I see you’ve already made a post. I would be patient then in waiting for a DM to reach out
In the meantime, I suggest a proactive approach in looking over #looking-for-players to see if there’s any open games that could be a good fit for you
Let me also add that not many DMs will just start a game in the moment. Most DMs prefer to carefully schedule and plan their games.
You might find yourself growing frustrated if you're keen on playing DnD right now.
Like I said it's like going on a date. Very few people will agree to meet up with you the moment you decide you want to go on a date with said person.

idk i just like the podcast tales from the stinky dragon
Using an online character sheet like the one of D&D Beyond can help do a lot of the heavy lifting, too.

Did you have a character idea in mind already?
Selecting a class, species, and background is a good place to start.
You can browse through #looking-for-players to see what’s available. A lot of games are beginner-friendly even if they’re not explicitly advertised as such, so if you see one you’re interested in, can’t hurt to ask.

- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
bro i still need help making a charecter and the D&D beyond dont help
Where are you getting stuck?
No. Have you actually tried reading through the character creation rules?
Dosh is right. If you haven't looked at the links that you were advised to check out, you should try clicking on them.
Also idk what these "special spells" you are talking about are? What does it say specifically?
hey im looking a campaign for newcomer and language is german
Welcome! Check out some of the games posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Direct message the poster or use the thread attached to the game post to indicate your interest.
See also #find-a-game which has useful info and instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
what is the difference between looking for players and looking for community?
Where does it say “special spells”?
Looking for Community are for D&D community servers where there are many Dungeon Masters, many players, many D&D games - unlike #looking-for-players where it's one DM looking for a group of players for their game/campaign.
ah ok thanks for the help. undyingnoob
@echo kelp how can i find a german party?, because i cant see the language of the campaign in looking for player channel?
You can ask if they run games in German
I think you might have better luck looking through German game/hobby/TTRPG servers and see if folks there are running D&D games in German.
Well you can see what the other servers in #looking-for-community offer. Discord also has a Server Discovery tool (the icon in the server sidebar that has the compas icon) and you might be able to find servers that way.
im sorry for all these dumb question. i only played dnd in local with some friends i have no idea how dnd online works.
Not dumb questions at all!
thank you undyingnoob, i will try with my luck
Hi there im very new to DnD and all I've seen so far are just videos, so like is there a way i can find a group via discord by chance that would cool to help me get into DnD
Welcome! If you’ve got questions about the game, folks in this channel are always happy to help.
If you want a group to play with, I’d recommend starting with #looking-for-players.
That's really helpful. I played once and it was very scuffed. DM didn't DM for a long time so I barely remember how to make a carictor and we were playing an older verson. 😭
If you want to build one with the current rules, chapter 2 of the Basic Rules does a good job of walking through the steps.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
You can start by picking a class, species, and background.
Online character sheet like the one of D&D Beyond make it pretty easy, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
i heard about the spells on a podcast
Are you talking about earlier?
We can’t tell you what the special spells are since that seems to be a thing specific to that podcast’s game. Perhaps they might be referring to something in the rules, or an item they got, or something custom, but we couldn’t tell you.
Certain character options can grant access to additional spells, such as the High Elf species or Magic Initiate feat. As people have recommended you before it’d be helpful to peruse the Free Rules to see some of the options you may have.
Helo guys! Welcome, my name is Risiel and I'm new to DnD.
Welcome Risiel!
Is it possible to play DnD without IRL friends? T_T
Most of my friends is not interested in playing DnD
Absolutely! There are options for both in-person and online games if you’re comfortable playing with strangers

In addition to the resources above, this server’s group-finding resource hub is #find-a-game . Finding a group is easiest when you cast your net wide, so I also recommend the following avenues:

- Other TTRPG & D&D forums (e.g. roll20, D&DBeyond forums)
- Local businesses (e.g. game stores, libraries)
- School clubs (if you’re in school/uni)

And my heart has a -2 constitution modifier
It can certainly be daunting to look at for the first time 😅
The Free Rules, or PHB in your case, do a really good job of explaining what to put where step by step thankfully
Hell is real
And it's name is dyslexia
We have nine of those here!
Also relateable I don't even have dyslexia and I can still barely process the character sheet half the time

Hi
Welcome!
Hello
Hello Mace!
Howdy
hello! i am very VERY new to dnd and i am wondering where to start i suppose. i know very little so please inform me on pretty much anything and i will listen, i appreciate any feedback - thank you!!
Hi I'm kind new to DND and I'm looking for a party who would be willing to help me learn the game better I appreciate it
Here are some options. Pick one!
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
thank you i will look into some of these!! i’ve already seen podcasts and videos of people playing dnd which is how i became interested in dnd, but i appreciate it bunches and will look into these options!!
Theirs a great series of youtube tutorials on how dnd goes
My favourite is "crap guide to dnd", its very informative and has some humor to make it not so rought to learn
helloooo im new here and im having trouble creating a character and sticking with it lol

Hello to all, i never played DnD but i was wondering, i think my personallity in r eal live slack the imagination of being a roleplayer but i really like the idea of the adventure and strategy behind this, is this still something for me then? I used to play warhammer, and really liked the battles, just my imagination didnt see the creatures moving like some players did.. i never bothered with their fantasy in the game, but i wonder do they bother with me by not seeing things how they see or speak. Maybe i just need to grow more in to it, i dont know, its kinda holding me back to find a group etc.
Sounds like you might enjoy adventures advertised as combat-heavy or dungeon crawls, then. Give it a try, find your comfort zone.
Hello, I have a question! First time dm'ing here and I wondered if anyone happened to have a tool / site or something for DM's to upload battlemaps to and move tokens through that tool (for combat purposes, so that I can just stream the battlemap to my players and they can follow it on their devices) 🙏🏻
That would be called a VTT (Virtual Tabletop) of which there are many! There’s free ones like roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo, but paid options (Sigil, Foundry) have some nice features as well.
DDB has Maps (master tier sub though to DM), Roll20 is free in the base version. Owlbear rodeo is also free
Foundry VTT has a bit of a learning curve but it the most powerful because of community modules. its a one time payment
there are more but those are the most popular I think
there is also Above VTT which modifies D&D Beyond and is also free, but it might cause issues with the site, so if you have any trouble with DDB, check if its the extention first
Thank you two! I will definitely look into it! I am currently clicking through roll20!

Morning Dylan
Hi everyone, I’m kinda new to dnd, completely new to being a dungeon master. I was wondering if anyone could teach me how to dm? I have a world I desperately want to play in or bring to life, it’s from a book series I love, but it’s such a small book series that I doubt I would ever be able to find someone to dm it, so I would like to. Problem is I know nothing about how to dm a game
hi everyone i'm new to dnd, and want to be a dungeon master. I was wondering if someone could help me with the basic of the game like making characters and other stuff like being a DM
Welcome all! As a starting point for learning how to DM, I recommend reading the DM introduction chapter of the free basic rules. You can check that here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics#TheBasics
Apart from reading, I can also recommend the "Running the Game" series by Matt Colville on youtube. He goes through a lot of topics and explains it well: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
You can get started running D&D with an adventure called Peril in Pinebrook. It uses a slimmed down version of the rules to get you and your players acquainted with the basics and best of all, it's free.
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
I am interested in playing as a character in an adventure but I haven’t played in 20+ years. What is the best way to find games?

Hate to bring this back up, but you were given an incorrect answer.
For the prone condition, any attack at 5' away (adjacent, basically) has advantage (melee or ranged), while any attack has disadvantage if it is further away, again, melee or ranged.
Note though that shooting at 5' through another rule usually causes disadvantage so for ranged attacks at 5', it is usually straight roll. This is because when a roll has any number of Advantage combined with any number of Disadvantage, the roll is always as if it has neither.
The result is basically this:
Melee Attack at 5' :: Advantage
Ranged Attack at 5' :: Straight Roll
Any Attack at more than 5' :: Disadvantage
If Silvery Barbs (or anything else) imposed Disadvantage, it could only change the Melee at 5' which would now be a Straight Roll. EDIT: See below. Silvery Barbs doesn't actually cause Disadvantage. This note would be more for something that does.
Idk what to put but I’m new and looking forward to playing

Ty man, I know how 'prone' condition works but was unsure how silvery barbs interact with it, cuz it says reroll in the description which confused me.
Also, at the end you said 'it could only change melee at 5' which would now be a straight roll', wouldn't it affect ranged attack at 5' (without close quarters shooter or crossbow expert) and apply disadvantage on it?
Also, i'd like to know how you managed to find my question after a month 😅
Hey guys does this Discord ever do voice channels?
a long time ago we had them, but they were misused so it is no longer a feature we support
For shame! VC would have been great for us newbies.
It would be, I agree, but I totally get why they don't. Damn near impossible to regulate them for problematic folks.
Hello?

Afternoon sorry I’m little confused lol
It would affect Crossbow Expert, yes. I was just trying to keep it simple due to the channel we're in 🙂 and was loosely referring to how Disadvantage would interact with what's already here.
I did screw up myself though... I was indicating disadvantage caused by Silvery Barbs, but I didn't properly read Silvery Barbs as it does not cause Disadvantage. So, Silvery Barbs interaction would be as per the spell (extra d20 rolled and used instead). My bad!
LOL it is afternoon, my day is FLYING by lol
Only played like DND once but very short
got ya! Do you have any questions?
Is it bad to say a lot
not at all. lol
Well I should ask first where and how to I create my character?
Check out the pins on this channel, or a Bot is likely to post the links in a sec lol
the free rules are pretty easy to follow. If you build one on D&D Beyon (the official site) it is pretty easy to do
The Free Rules on D&D Beyond will step you through this process.
Linked for convenience: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
lol its not bad
Just go step by step. Sentence by sentence if necessary. Eventually you get there. 🙂 The links there will help you find out more about a particular step when you see a term that might not make sense, e.g., like what a feat is.
Thank u I appreciate it, might take a while cause I’m quite slow wity these things so I do apologise but I’ll probably wait until my friend is free so she can help with it😊
well said Cal
Briefly read though it I think I get the understanding now so just for now pick class, background and story of my character yeah? Also extra stuff like beginning weapons etc and I need to write it down corrrct?
you can do it on paper with pencil for sure. There are printable character sheets. Other option is sign up free account on D&D Beyond and make your character there
Oh right right just to help it to keep track of my levels and such?
it is an easy way to track it
Should mention I do have autism so a lot of information at once can be tricky
no problem friend

D&D Beyond's interface usually gives you a list of things you can choose and in the character creator, a "box" is often drawn around something that you still need to make a selection for. It can be really helpful if you're feeling a little overwhelmed looking at the options and trying to figure out what can be chosen.
Exactly. It really walks you through step by step and you can click on anything for a further explanation
Hey guys, I'm new to this channel and I was just wondering how I could get in touch with a group to play with? Maybe one just looking for one or two more party members to get things started? I'd thank you kindly for pointing me in the right direction!
Hi everyone! 👋🏾
I’m completely new to D&D and looking to join a beginner-friendly online group that’s open to helping someone learn as they go. I’ve been reading up on the game and I’m really excited to start playing, roleplaying, and learning the rules in action.
If anyone’s running a campaign or one-shot that’s welcoming to new players, I’d love to join! Thanks so much, and I’m looking forward to adventuring with y’all. 😊
Please check out our #looking-for-players channel. If you want to post to find a dm for yourself please check out #find-a-game
Will do. thank you!
wassup people hows everyone doing today?
Great and u
glad to hear. I am prepping for my game tonight. The party may be finding the dragon this evening
ooooh sounds fun
hopefully lol
got no idea which dragon and such but here I am creating my Ranger

if ye got questions, ask. This dragon they will be fighting is an adult white dragon. gonna be a COLD night for them lol
ooooh ok
wait u the DM or a player?
blue means DM
ok got it lmao
but ye, where do I need to ask about my character?
if it is a few simple questions, here is ok. if you want more in depth questions / answers then hit up #character-discussion
Im new! How do i make a good adventure
I struggle with players having freedom. I always craft a dependent narrative.
Find players who like playing a narrative instead of a sandbox.
any Games going on that I'm able to listen in? I know nothing about how to play the game , Just heard so much about it and I am very interested
Check YouTube and Twitch for liveplay D&D streams (also some folks advertise their D&D streams in #dnd-advertisements).
If you're looking for specific shows you might like Dungeons of Drakkenheim run by the Dungeon Dudes. Although the current season they are pretty high-level so I might suggest starting with an earlier season of theirs.
Hi me and my friend are new in this group and i dont really know anything about dnd but from what ive heard it seems cool so i joined and i was hoping someone with more knowledge could help us

I’ve been looking into D&D for the past few months and have had trouble finding games as a player and thinking of just being a DM.
I’m really new, what are some of the best resources to check out?
I do have the DM Guide 2014 and 2024 as well as beginning to read Dragon of Ice Spire Peak, which I’ve heard is a good starter adventure.
Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it!

Where can I check what ability does what specifically or do I get to “pick” what it does if that makes sense

Can somebody explain how spell save DCs work? For example a level 1 Druid casting ice knife. Where do I find proficiency and spell casting attribute bonus
yes!
So You can always calculate your spell dc by using the following formula 8+Proficincy bonus+Spellcasting ability modifier.
Druids use wisdom as their spell casting ability so we will use that. assume its 14 or 16 for a +2 or +3 a spell casting save should be something akin to (8+2(Profiency at level 1)+2 or 3 (Spellcasting ability modifer
This can be augmented as you level up which increases your proficincy bonus and when you gain ASI (Ability score increase) at 4th 8th ect levels you can further increase your wisdom score which increases your spell save DC
You can also get certian items which also increase your spell DC 🙂
So in combat ice knife is wierd. First you roll to hit the target (d20+prof+wisdom) if it hits roll iceknife damage. Then each creature within 5 feet must make a save against your dc as the knife explodes
so for that spell specifically you use both your spellcasting and Save DC 🙂
Does that make sense?
I guess I’m still confused on the proficiency bonus. Where do I see that, and where does it come from?
To start, saving throws represent a creature's attempt to resist an effect. This is an example of a d20 Test. The target number to meet or beat is the effect giver's Save DC. For effects caused by players this is typically equal to:
8 + Proficiency Bonus + Attribute Modifier + Bonuses.
For spellcasters this attribute modifier is your spellcasting ability modifier. You can determine your spellcasting ability modifier by looking at the Spellcasting Feature for your class. Here is the one for Druid
Your proficiency bonus is an additional modifier based on your total character level as opposed to class level. The linked table shows your PB depending on what level you are. A similar table can be found integrated into your class page.
Bonuses include any additional source that could increase your Spell Save DC, such as the Amulet of the Devout for Paladins and Clerics.
Okay that makes sense then. I have 600 hours in bg3 and I NEVER knew how proficiency was calculated lol
For example, a level 1 Druid with 17 Wisdom and no magic items will have their Save DC at:
- 8 + 2 (PB) + 3 (Wis Mod) = 13
As another example, a level 8 Druid with 20 Wisdom and attuned to a +1 Moon Sickle will have their Save DC at:
- 8 + 3 (PB) + 5 (Wis Mod) + 1 (Moon Sickle) = 17
I’m assuming each class has a different proficiency bonus
Nope
Oh it’s all the same?
Proficiency bonus, as mentioned, is based on total character level instead of individual class level
Okay I gotcha
So a level 8 Druid and a 4 Paladin/4 Warlock multiclass will both have a PB of +3
Since both have a total character level of 8
Thank you all so much. That was a question bothering me for so long, finally found a good instance to ask!
Np!
Hey everyone. Brand new to all of this haha. But hoping to learn a lot about DnD and make some friends along the way
Welcome! I'd check out the newbie resources in this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play . Additionally we're always happy to help here answering any specific newbie questions :)
Can I join a dnd group I think i have a grasp of the game now enought to play as a player
To use this server to find a group use #find-a-game !
hello, I'm new to this server, but already used to play D&D5E with friends, I like to play as a paladin, who almost never breaks his oath, I'm looking to play, but I'm only available at Wednesdays and a Sunday 1-0-1, I am from brazil, but I can pretty much talk fluently in English, if anyone is up for a session, DM me.
As I directed Medic-Herbalist, the channel for groupfinding is #find-a-game . If you'd like somewhat of a shortcut and would like to view posted games check out #looking-for-players

downloaded the dnd beyond app to try and make a character. very confusing but slowly getting the grasp
Have you been looking at the free rules as you go along?
same fr
i got so caught up in the backstory tho lol
i just need a campaign to actually use it in 💔
Sameee found out the character I want to play needs a book to be purchased to use the class I want to 😭🥀
Let me guess, Artificer?
Damn is it that common lmfao
the only class that requires a purchase - at least out of the... two available on DNDBeyond that require purchasing, one being obscure third party material.
Ohhh 😭
Exactly. The other one we're talking about is Blood Hunter, yeah
No, blood hunter doesn't require a purchase
Oh that's right
the other is Illrigger, which is obscure third party material that requires a purchase to use on DDB.
I was just gonna say illrigger I forgot about that one for a minute
Blood Hunter would arguably be less obscure due to Critical Role, but doesn't require a purchase.
But yes it is common to see the hitch of Artificer requiring a purchase whereas none of the IIRC 12 other classes require it.
Howdy folks! New player looking to try out some games!

Hey guys. New to dnd. Ive been learning through dm'ing my own game. We are comming up on session 4. Players cannot play very often though. So I joined to find more people to play with.
found a lot of people saying it might be a bit more boring but way easier to start with a rogue or fighter which is what i did and i’m excited to start
Hello, I'm new too DnD can someone give me tips too how crate my character like what's a good race and class
There's a lot of variables in making a character. If you want to get certain advantages depending on the setting, you can surely find a good combo for it (among the allowed resources). If so, you gotta be more specific on your needs. Anyway, you can perhaps make any combo work lol
You can also just vibe check it or make any character you want regardless of the premise of the game?
The person above you mentioned that Rogue and Fighter classes are easier for a newbie, you can look them up and see if you wanna try em.
Ok tanks
BUT did you have fun?
No one does!
Hey I have a question. In the player handbook the classes mention something about certain classes need higher stats in blank and areas as a suggestion for saving throws. Does that mean you could just put your higher dice rolls there. I guess it just depends on how the dm wants you to generate your stats.
It does depend on stat generation, yes. There is also a table for suggested stat numbers that match the standard array, by class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#StandardArraybyClass
That helps a lot.
Hey new friends I’m new to dnd looking to find some new people and learn more about dnd
Hey 32
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
I need to learn the game a lot more gonna read all the rules and stuff id hate to join a game and hold people back because i dont understand
Perfect timing my friend
Well there’s a lot of rules. I’ve played a lot of dnd I’m not familiar with all of it. I’d start small like getting familiar with the character classes you might be interested in playing like narrow it down a bit.
I’m in a dnd campaign with my friends I’m a lvl 3 rogue atm
they kinda walk me thru everything as I try to figure it out
Oh
But the campaign doesn’t get played much so I’m here trying to play more with other people
Sup yall
This is what I do I take pictures of the book so if I have to look at something I could just look at my phone instead of pulling out my book and skimming through it. I do this with attacks mostly.
Fudge I should’ve replied to that other one
How would I find games for new comers
Well look for the games in your time period. If you find something. Just ask the dm if he’s okay with you being new. In hindsight we’ve all started somewhere.
Okay thank u very much
What channel do I find games in
Hello! I'm confused about a couple things already haha
Firstly how long should one expect a session to go for and do I make a character before or after I have found a game? 🧐
Looking for players is DMs looking for players
nvm I see that games have scheduled times and expected run times
still for the character do I make one per game I join or I have one pre made to be able to join
Yoo yooo
Some sessions might mention a time the session is supposed to be done. 2 to 3 hours is a good guess I’ve played 4 though. You could do both like make your character before and after. Helps kinda so you could just easily pull it out and change the level and what not. That’s what I do anyway.
Wish i could change my name to red😔
#looking-for-players is where dms go to tell players about their tables. #looking-for-dm is where players looking for dms go.

Hi all, i have never played DnD nor have I done any RP before, what do i need and how do i get started?
Hey dj
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Read the guide books on Dnd beyond and look for games in #looking-for-players
Hope I’m posting this in correct spot sorry if not. So I’m not a newcomer to DnD started back in 2.5/3.0 but having issues being able to build a character with shared content from my friends.
Specifically under character builder reguardless of content selected on Home Screen I can not access the artificer nor warforged to create my character. Any help?
Yes I have all options selected for character creation
Couple of common issues:
- Does someone in your campaign have a DDBeyond Master Subscription? If no, no sharing
- If yes, did that person enable Content Sharing for the campaign?
- Does someone in your campaign own one of the books that contained Artificer? If no, no sharing.
Hmm, strange. It's probably best to ask over in #ddb-support then.
Appreciate it, yea my buds n I have been trying for weeks now. Walk through and check same boxes but anything beyond basic classes and races refuses to show on mine
Sometimes it may help to create a new character. It can be wonky.
Where can I join a campaign? I’m completely new to D&D
Yes. We were fighting corrupted trees inside this giant greenhouse. The ranger threw a lamp at it and it was set on fire, next thing you know, everyone was throwing their torches. Our rogue went down because of the spreading fire, the cleric could not keep up cuz everyone was taking aoe damage because the wizard thought it was a great idea to throw a fire bolt literally in front of an already raging inferno. Everyone except me, a fighter with a shield, are in front in a straight line and we all forgot not to damage the other plants that were not corrupted. It was glorious.

Is there a link to show what classes scale with what Modifier, still not sure the difference between Int and Wisdom?
Best way I describe in and wis to my players is int think street smarts, wis think book smart
so a druid would be more wisdom based?
Intelligence is book or learned smarts. Wisdom is street / survival smarts. Yes a druid is Wisdom based
just finished the damn character sheet
Thanks dyslexia got me
hows everyone doing today?
fantastic and u? Do u have a group to use your character in or was it for fun
I made one just so I could get used to the sheet stuff and lemme tell you I did in fact NOT get used to it at all. been at it for... a week or so?
got ya.
ye and took this character that I already created and to put him in the DnD world was def harder than I thought buuuuuuut no I still didn't find any group to use him in
Have ya looked in the looking for channels here?
Anyone open to a game last time I played was like 27 years ago on the 3.5 rule book
Looking for a dm to run it
Hey Dustin, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Thanks appreciate
Playing a game from 2003 in 1998 is wild.
I'm about to start my first ever D&D campaign in 20 minutes! Does anyone have any broad and simple tips for a brand new beginner?
Have FUN! don't fret about the rules, but follow the guidance of your DM. Lean in to how you envision your character being, but remember it is a team game, so don't try to be a lone wolf in your group
Thank you so much, I will keep these words in mind.
Would love to hear how it goes afterwards
hello
howdy
How can I find people to play dnd with
hey spooky, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Hello all
Howdy Wiggles
Ehat is the best app or website to make a character for dnd
Hi
This is probably a very obvious question, but, if I'm playing a character who's generally very pious and has a healer role, what kind of class(?) would make sense? He's human, if that effects anything. I'm not super familiar on like, all the basics yet...
Cleric.
Oh okay thank you, that makes sense to me
D&D beyond is a great website to make characters.
Technically a pious healer could be any class. Alternatively you could always go for Divine Soul sorcerer or Celestial warlock. They're not clerics but they're very cleric coded.
I actually haven't checked it out yet, thank you! I'll tinker around and try to get familiar with some stuff, then
And as I have said before you could always try to break the stereotypes and go for a pious bard or rogue.
But like, a cleric is usually like, the god-worshipping one, right?
Druids could also be pious. Since there are gods of nature.
Oh right, druids do... what exactly? I'm sorry 😭🙏
Cleric and paladins are the stereotypical pious
Depends on what you're comfortable with. The idea of playing as a godless cleric is a popular concept among some people.
Druids are nature’s clerics if u will lol.
Ohhh okay that's helpful
I'm very evidently new, so I'm probably not gonna break convention just yet. I wanna have character depth, but mechanically and in terms of role and stuff, I'm not ready to complicate it 😅
Druids are nature mages. Many of them revere one or multiple gods of nature but their magic isn't divine.
Oh okay, got it. I do like naturey magic, so I'll probably keep that in mind for a future character, but maybe not this one
Druids are said to be the most complicated class. Spellcasters are more complex. But if you really want to make one don't let that stop you. Didn't stop me from making a wizard as my first character.
man there are so many ads for dnd games but none of them are in europe lmao
or at least mostly US
Can someone teach me to play i have created a character but thats all i know how to do
Thank you very much
Hi, Piercer feat + Rogue Assassin with 2 piercing weapons deals a sucesfull assasinate(criticals) So how will be piercer bonus calculated?
If i use full combination of atacks with assassinate I asume that I get 3 critical attacks(main atk; sneak atk; bonus atk.)
So I assume i get to rol piercer bonus for each atk?
For a newcomer, college of lore or college of eloquence
Personally like Eloquence more but depends on your bard
Sneak Attack isn't a separate Attack
But otherwise yes
hmm interesting I always thought that my char is "sneaking in" a separate extra attack when i use sneak attack skill
so basically any attack by skill then is not considered as an attack?
it's just extra damage on top of a successful attack
when certain conditions are met
so with a shortsword, sneak attack, and piercer it would be 2(1d6+xd6)+1d6
x varying depending on your level/amount of sneak attack dice
yeah all good, i just reread sneak attack description, its just extra damage, thanks :]
without sneak attack a shortsword (1d6) becomes 3d6 on a crit (shortsword probably isn't a piercing weapon, but the example stands)
@full matrix #find-a-game
what is the 2 at front?
rolling those dice twice because it's a crit
ahh, yes, ok
i just simplified it all on my sheets to 6d6+3 and 8d6+3 xD
Thanks again :]
what's the weapon?
6d6/8d6 can't be right, Piercer should leave it as an odd number
you don't get that one twice
oh, no its without piercer, just my regular build, I'm currently deciding what to take: feat or +2 dex 😄
a right okay cool
having in mind that we will have only one such lvl-up in this campaign (max lvl7)
can i get an "welcome!" message?

Do you or someone in your campaign share the book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Buy Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, get into a campaign with someone who has access and can share content, or privately input the info from your physical copy via the homebrew tools.
that is the book it is in and would be needed for you to have access to it
60 dollars...
Careful you don't have the combo clicked, it defaults to buying both the hard copy and digital copy
What is the difference between spell attack bonus and spell casting modifier?
The spell attack bonus is used when making an attack roll with a spell, and it is calculated by adding your spellcasting ability modifier and your proficiency bonus. On the other hand, the spellcasting modifier is simply the ability score modifier of your spellcasting ability.
In what instance would you use spellcasting modifier?
Certain spells may ask you to make a Spellcasting Ability Check, or otherwise refer to your spellcasting (ability) modifier
It'll just be fairly more niche than the more common attacks and saves
An example includes Cure Wounds. It means it works for whoever is casting it, and isn't arbitrarily locked to Wisdom, even if someone with Intelligence or Charisma based casting manages to get their hands on Cure Wounds.
Also, Dispel Magic requires you to make an ability check using your spellcasting ability, if trying to dispel a spell stronger than the level you cast Dispel Magic at. So a Wizard doing so would use Intelligence, a Cleric would use Wisdom, and a Warlock would use Charisma.
So if a cleric has +3 in wisdom their spell casting modifier is also +3?
Yes, as a Cleric's spellcasting ability is Wisdom
so when a cleric casts a cleric spell, their spell attack bonus is derived from Wisdom, their save DC is derived from wisdom, and any bonuses or designations, like cure wounds or dispel magic as given examples, will derive from Wisdom.
Got it, thank you all very much
Of course, the attack bonus is the modifier + proficiency bonus, and the save DC is 8+prof+modifier, as per usual
whereas things just asking for the modifier, like the aforementioned cure wounds and dispel magic, will just be the modifier added to whatever they ask to add to
Is the DC the same for every type of save? With the cleric again, if the enemy has to do a charisma save for instance, is it still the same modifier? Or is this one based off your charisma?
yooo i got my first campaign coming up. found a really cool group thats gonna teach and help me. made a half elf thief 🙂
Hey Morgan. There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
post in LFG or looking for DM someone should reach out
also going to Roll20 you can find gaqmes there
Okay thank you..
The DC number is always based on your casting stat
Which for a cleric is Wisdom
The type of save the enemy makes depends on the spell
Which channel is for actual play?
spell casting confuses me so my first build is a rouge mainly using stealth and up front attacking
there are no channels for actual play here, only channels to find DM's or groups that offer actual play
you can find them if u follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
trust me once you post in #looking-for-dm youll get a couple people to hit you up
I’m not new to d&d but new to online forums for playing d&d. How do you post in looking for dm? I don’t see an option on my screen to do so.
see the info in #find-a-game super easy to follow to find what u need
Thank you!
Greetings, im new to this world, and I hope I can learn and play with you.
welcome Hector
Can someone give me a good spell list for a college of lore bard? We are starting at level 3
I'm brand new to D&D and I'm not really sure where to start, I've watch some game play and it looks like a lot of fun and I'm just wondering a good place to start.
Hey Gibby
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Spell lists can be very player / playstyle dependent, i.e., how you play and how you see your character. For example, if you want to charm your way through things and try and negotiate everything, you could have quite a different spell list from someone who does not.
However, as a 3rd level College of Lore Bard, you would have 6 Prepared spells and 2 Cantrips.
Assuming you have no clue what the rest of your party will be like and don't have a playstyle in mind, the following are decent enough choices:
For Cantrips, take Vicious Mockery or Starry Wisp for a ranged Cantrip and then any Cantrip of choice.
For 1st & 2nd level spells, Bard has a lot of decent choices. Personally, I wouldn't leave home without Cure Wounds (or Healing Word, to taste), Faerie Fire, Feather Fall & Lesser Restoration (from 2nd). The remaining 2 are really to taste, but I do like to always have at least one ritual as one of the 6.
It's not that the other spells aren't useful, but the ones I listed are kind of clutch things that you really miss when you don't have them. But as I said from the start, spell choice is very much a playstyle thing that should align with how the player plays. A vastly different spell list could be vastly superior if a player plays differently.
does thaumaturge only work on the person casting it?
Tysm!
Thaumaturge only benefits the Cleric:
In addition, your mystical connection to the divine gives you a bonus to your Intelligence (Arcana or Religion) checks.
Did you instead mean Thaumaturgy, the spell? If so, all references in that spell start with You or Your. You or Your with a spell always indicates just the caster.
tysm
Yes, I did mean thaumaturgy. Thanks
yo, what site is best to make a homebrew character?
I highly advise against jumping into homebrew as a newbie, especially if you are creating it. It's very easy to mess it up and break the game's balance.
whats the best way to find a pbp group online?
Hello, Chat!
Heya
We have #looking-for-players and #looking-for-dm , but there’s some external websites like StartPlaying.

is there a channel to work with the lego d&d campain? .3.
I never knew there was Lego D&D campaigns
The lego set has a campain inside .3.
how many spell slots would an artificer 1 wizard 3 have can i just read directly from the multiclassing spell slot table or no

Hey I’m new to D&D I used to play but it’s been like 10 years I would love a game

idk if this is more for the dnd rules but flurry of blows (if i attacked in my main action) lets me bring my total attacks to 3?
and does seeing if the attack hits count for both flurry of blows attacks?
so the number of attacks on your main attack action can vary a bit depending on level and if you use 2024 rules for dual wielding, but assuming unarmed strikes only for a moment:
Level 1-4
1 attack from action, +2 attacks from flurry or blows = total 3
level 5-9:
2 attacks from action, and 2 attacks from flurry = total 4 attacks
level 10+ in 2024 rules:
2 attacks from action and 3 attacks from flurry = total 5 attacks
you roll to hit separately for every attack you make
Hi, new to DnD looking for a group. I have no idea how to play but I’d like to join an offline game and learn the ropes from there. Any groups in Brooklyn playing Mon, Tus, or Wed would be great. Thank you.
I think you will have a difficult time finding local groups for offline play on here. I suggest checking local facebook groups or similar, or even better local game stores
tysm, the d&d beyond thing confused me abit
would it be wrong of me to roll the die to see if the attack hits and the damage it would do if it does hit? (d20 and d6 in my case)
I mean that is how attacks work. you roll to hit, and if you hit, you roll for damage
mb, i meant at the same time
some people do this to speed up their turn, sure.
though you wanna be careful with this in some cases. For example if you had an ability that allowed you to add more dice on a hit, you usually have to chose to use this before you know the base damage of the attack
so i could do both die at the same time but i probably shouldnt if the ability adds more dice onto a hit if it lands?
yeah, maybe ask your DM first but there shouldnt be an issue usually
hello. just gonna throw it out there. is there a decently knowledgeable DM available to hop into a VC with me and help me out with some questions. big ask im sure thank you in advance

Unfortunately this server gets so many new players that it's a bit unrealistic for us to have one on one rules learning sessions. Thankfully, all the basic rules are completely free and linked above!
There's also plenty of resources available, like the Handbooker Helper video series also linked above, which goes through specific rules. And if you've got any questions, you're more than welcome to ask them here!
hello, newish to dnd , just ran our first one shot last night super fun! but now i want to dive deep. just have a question, for newer players is it better to try using the new handbook with sheets, or for us to use dnd beyond on tablets for our character sheet?
i understand it can be preference, or nostalgic to use paper sheets etc i don't mind i just want an idea which is easier to learn with?
Hi! very very new to DnD and I'm currently creating my character spreadsheet on dndyond and it's asking me to choose a gaming set for tool proficiencies and I'm really confused cause I dont undersyand the explanations online... pls help?
It really comes down to preference, especially when you're in person. DnD Beyond does some of the calculations for you, but of course means that all your info is locked into having access to the Internet.
I wouldn't worry about this too much. It's asking which kind of games your character might be good at, such as Chess, or Cards, or Dice. It's a pretty minor thing that might not ever come up. In my experience, Playing Cards are the most commonly used gaming set, so if you don't have a particular preference, that might be your best option.
Thanks!<3
yea just seems easier to edit, tooltips, and look up stuff needed vs paper but yea just trying to learn and try to fast track it, been watching vids and i do have the handbook already as well
i still would use a notebook for note taking

I want to know if I made a mistake somewhere while creating it cause I don't have any knowledge of the rules yet. or is sharing character spreadsheet also not allowed??? I'm so lost ncjfdxekls,
I can review it. send me a DM
You can share links to your character sheet in #character-discussion , if you'd like.
Okay Thank you!

We don’t have a vc here and it’s hard for anyone to do one on ones, if you have questions ask them here
Me and 3 friends are looking for a chill dm whose willing to teach new players (through discord/R20) we all have characters made
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
If you’re joining a campaign, it’s a good idea to not have a character sheet fully filled out. I always have one or two sentence ideas for characters, but the best characters are the ones you create within the world. This is why character creation typically starts during session 0, when you’re told the main setting, lore, story, etc. This makes it easier for you to tie your character into the world and make them actually feel like a part of it. From both a player and DM perspective this works a lot more than trying to shove a pre-made character into a pre-made world
Do saving throws get an increase from your ability modifier AND proficiency bonus? For instance with a cleric, is charisma saving throw +2 (from proficiency) and then wisdom is +5 (from proficiency and ability modifier)
Also #looking-for-dm
You only add your proficiency bonus if you’re proficient in that saving throw. Otherwise, the only modifier you add is your ability modifier
each class is proficient in 2 of the 6 saving throws
Which is listed under all the other proficiencies
And if your ability modifier is -1 so is the saving throw?
yes it would be unless you are proficient in that saving throw
HI all
Hellooo

Hello, I made a character set up with the help of AI, looking for a group just to try it out.
This will help nomo :3
I would be hesitant to entirely trust the advice that AI gives. It often gives you misleading information.

Heya
Hi!
Hello there my fellow adventure 😊 I have questions how does one make a character?
You go to DND Beyond, and you can select the character creation option, I dont think you need an account for that!
Oh thank you very much 😊
Yeah no problem!
You do need an account actually.
Anyway if you have not done it already I recommend checking this out first.
