druid was my first class and it wasnt too hard to be honest
the only part that was hard at first was keeping track of my wildshapes but i feel its more just a lot to keep track of rather than difficult
i like just started playing dnd so like what are like the rules and such cause i was just doing a 1 on 1 dnd thing with my friend over video call
The basic rules are available in the free players handbook on dnd beyond, as for more niche rulings just leave it up to DM decision
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Never played this game before but I was to start the short one to just get experience
You could look for what’s called a one-shot.
The entire game is player in a single session, usually 2-4 hours.
You won’t level up your character like you would in a longer campaign, but it’s a fun, low-stakes way to experiment with the game.
Where can I play that?
Hi
Hello Tacocat
Hello

😮 friend?
🙂
Hey, sorry if Im a bit lost, is this the chat for new D&D players?
It's not a place for discussion among new players, but it is a spot to get acquainted with the game. As the channel description says, "Ask about the basics of D&D and learn to play!"
Oh, okay then! Thanks
Question: How do TTRPG groups Play By Post?
I'm familiar with Roleplaying on a forum boards; is PBP TTRPG the same concept?
A-ha, I found the FAQ and blog post for PBP on the website 😅
Wait so what is a good way to find a group to play dnd with?
Lexington, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
is anyone starting a new campaign ive never played dnd before but it looks like a lot of fun and i just made a character
You can check out #looking-for-players to see what games are available.
#find-a-game and #learn-to-play have additional suggestions.
I never played DND before, and can't play with someone IRL or in call, can someone help me get started or help me
They’re played entirely in writing, like we’re doing here.
They can be a little harder to find, and tend to be slower than a typical game.
But with the right group, they can be a lot of fun.
oh okay, thanks!
how do i get started like, before i join a game
is there something i should know or do
#learn-to-play has some good info to get you going.
ty!
But if you’ve got any specific questions along the way, folks here are happy to answer.
Another Mr, I see...
how do i send a message in looking for dm
#find-a-game explains that
Is anybody starting a campaign that i can join
Heya. Never played before but I do have a character on dnd beyond
I’d recommend checking out the available games in #looking-for-players.

You can nab Tales from the yawning portal and run the sunless citidel as its a great Dungeon delve/dm learning too;

Question as a newcomer trying to create a DND character. When making the characters backstory, what would be the most important questions to answer?
Also do you need to have a full history of the character fleshed out right away or is it better to expand on the backstory as the campaign progresses?
I’d recommend asking your DM what they’re looking for, because it can vary.
But I like myself a good Swiss cheese backstory.
Enough there that I’ve got the basic shape and can start playing.
But full of holes. Anything I don’t need an immediate answer to, I don’t answer.
Then the DM can take those holes and help fill them in. They might ask specific questions to help tie your character into the story, or they might use it to surprise you down the road.
At a bare minimum, though, I’d say you need (1) enough to justify the decisions you made during character creation.
If your character is a cleric, how did they become a cleric? What god do they serve, and why?
Hi
Similarly, how did their species and background lead them to or prepare them for this adventure?
I’m new to dnd, I played one short session with my friends a while ago. But they don’t really want to play more. And I was wondering how I can find people to play newb friendly and a group that is committed like not joining and leaving
And then (2): they need a reason to say yes to the adventure.
Welcome! You can check #looking-for-players to see what games are available here.
#find-a-game and #learn-to-play have some further suggestions, too.
To play with people what would you recommend doing first
As a new player
They are looking for players but I’m unsure of which ones to apply for
Make sure you’ve good grasp of the basics. You don’t need to know everything, but you should know what your character can do, what to do on your turn during combat, and these common terms.
You can study while you look for a game, but knowing those things can improve your odds of getting accepted into a game.
Make sure you communicate your expectations with the group up front.
If everyone’s on the same page before the game begins, the game is more likely to last, and you can avoid some unpleasant surprises down the road.
Like what? I’m new to all this
The last time I played with my friends I had to make all their characters for them because they didn’t want to and my dm did such a good job but everyone argued and it didn’t last past the first encounter 😭
This was like a year ago tho
Also my first time playing
If, for example, you don’t want to play in a game, where there’s violence against animals, make sure people know that before you play.
Any good group will respect that, and you’ll be less likely to run into that kind of situation during play.
Gotcha, I don’t mind anything as long as people aren’t disrespectful to others
Then, yeah, that’s something you wanna tell the group upfront.
Probably with a few examples of the kind of disrespect you want to avoid.
Uh if they are like if I don’t get my way I’m leaving type of people
Idk it’s fine for the most part
I don’t mind people or the stuff in the campaign I’m unsure of what to expect
Aside from that:
I’d suggest coming up with a few loose ideas for characters.
Then once you find a group, you can work together to pick the best fit and add any finishing details.
Gotcha
In open to doing anything with characters ngl
Not fussy at all I can be a gnome an orc or an aasamir it’s all chill
While you’re playing, actively look for opportunities to get the other players involved.
What do I expect with that because it can be interpreted to me at least differently
YES
I like it when my character and another character know eachother I did that in the only session I played me and him met at a church and he was my parental guardian turtle or something
A game that says “rp focused” probably has more social situations, and more of an expectation that people find ways to bring their character to life.
When there’s a short rest, for example, that group might see it as an opportunity to just talk to each other in-character for a bit.
Like in my head a game of dnd is a mix between your characters story and other characters story with the world and some combat like you finally meet the boss you had hints about
I’m unsure of how it actually works but that’s how I imagine it
A game that’s combat focused might prefer to just gloss over that short rest and jump ahead to the action.
Oh but there needs to be story right? Or some?
Or do some people not care about the world building
I’m learning more and more then lol
I guess I like world building and combat is cool but I’d rather it be rare and a important event rather than a every second occurrence
If that’s the case what would be the tags for the game 😭
Depends on the moduels or whats being ran
Some Moduels dont have much of a story Icespire Peak for example doesnt have much of a over arching story
probably something like "Roleplay focus"
5e itself classifies the broad categories into Combat, Roleplay (Social Interaction) and Exploration
Home sweet home
hello all
Welcome
So how do level ups work I'm confused if they add anything to my bonuses or not
When you level up, you gain hit dice which increase your HP, you may get new features from your (sub)class, you may access to new spells, and you may gain an increase to your proficiency bonus
This is detailed in the chapter "how to play" in the Basic Rules and the Player's Handbook
So it's a d4 with hit dice right
Depends on your class
It can be anywhere from a d6 to a d12
No, there's no class with a d4 Hit Point Dice
No class in 5e has a d4 Hit Dice
That’s one of the first things listed in your class traits.
Fighters have a d10, for example.
And then you have a number of them equal to your level.
So a level 3 Fighter has 3d10.
How exactly do they work
Do u roll them with the other dice it tells you to when you hit someone?
(like hit dice)
No. Hit dice are for determining and recovering hit points.
For attacking, you roll a 20 sided die and add the relevant bonuses, mostly your proficiency bonus and relevant ability score.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#D20Tests
Ah, common confusion I've seen
Hit Dice is short for Hit Point Dice. Basically, it's how Hit Points are determined for things.
Not to be confused with making an attack roll with a bonus to hit
no worries
You'll get used to it, eventually it just clicks together
OK ty
You get a new hit die when you level up; you roll it and add your Constitution modifier, then increase your max HP by that amount.
You can also spend your hit dice during a short rest to regain HP.
And you get the spent ones back when you take a long rest.
Hey
Im new to dnd, I’ve played a one shot and currently am in a long campaign for months
Ive been wondering if i can get more into it yk?
To play in another campaign? Sure you could, it's your time.
Or did you meqn to find a way to get more into your current game?
I have never played DnD before but love listening to podcast of them and whatnot. I have created my first ever character in D&D Beyond and wondering how do I get into a campaign as a brand new person to D&D

So how do my players decide their spell slots and cam they switch out their spell slots
Have you read through your class description?
Or the rules on spellcasting in the Basic Rules?
To preface, this isn't how it works. Spell slots aren't decided, they're determined by what level a character is, in respective classes.
And you don't "switch out" spell slots. Rather, spell slots are the resource used to pay for casting spells. So if you want to cast the Fireball spell, you'd have to pay a spell slot of 3rd level or higher to cast it, each time.
Ok but they can cast any spell given at that level right?
Any spell they have prepared, that they have a spell slot left to cast it with.
Ok I think I understand so they can cast any spell for their level if they have it prepared
If the player has a level 3 spell slot available, they can use it to cast any prepared spell from levels 1 to 3.
And if they have something saying they can cast it, most commonly being "I expend a spell slot in order to cast it", of the appropriate spell slot level of course.
Spell slot levels are separate to character/class levels, however.
Any level 1 or 2 spells may even get a boost from using a higher level spell slot, detailed in the spell itself.
They cannot use that level 3 spell slot to cast a spell of level 4+.
An example is that 3rd level spell slots only start being attained at 5th level, such as by 5th level sorcerers and wizards. A 4th level or lower character will just outright never have a level 3 spell slot.
And yes, they're not exactly matched, since you attain a "new spell slot level" every other level, in certain classes... ones the community shorthands as "full casters" since they can attain the highest levels of spells. But anyway I digress-
basic point is, You've only got so many spell slots per adventuring day. Some are bigger:
A bigger spell slot will let you cast a bigger spell with it. For example, Fireball requires a level 3 spell slot at minimum.
A bigger spell slot can alternatively be used to cast a smaller spell but more powerfully. For example, Burning Hands only requires a level 1 spell slot at minimum to cast, but if you use a level 3 slot, you'd use any "Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot" benefits it gets, such as increased damage in this case.
So how do they determine spell slot levels
checking their class information. For example, for Wizard (https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190886-wizard)
A level 1 Wizard only has two spell slots, and both are level 1 spell slots.
(and their feature granting them spells in the first place says they can only prepare spells of a level they have slots for- so you never end up being able to prepare a spell of a level you can't even cast, via the feature that says "i get spells and the slots to cast them with")
It's detailed in your class description in the rules. There'll be section typically called "Spellcasting"
And yes, they will eventually attain an array of spell slots of multiple different slot levels. This lets them cast low level spells, cast high level spells, and cast low level spells using high level slots for the potentially bigger power from that slot.
our group is doing Peril in Pinebrook to get a feel for how DnD works, and if they all enjoy it we're doing lost mines of phandelver. Should I award any xp upon completing pinebrook? I slightly altered the story to make it transition into the intro to phandelver
That's very much up to you. Some folks like to have an external sign of accomplishment in the form of XP. Others are fine to see the story demonstrate progress (like if you gain an ally or a favor to call in later).
from what I've read, phandelver story says exactly when you'll level up. I was thinking about giving them some, to kind of make the game easier off the bat. Two of the three aren't gamers in this sense, so I want to kind of hold their hand for a bit.
Then that should be fine!
I think Phandelvers beginning does benefit from letting them start at level 2. So I'd say go for it.
Hello all, I have a query, my friend wants to play a pantomime horse, that is manned by two people, but these peopple also according to him technically do not exist, and it is a "glorious wizard horse" ... I have tried to come up with this but limitations that it can only function as part of it being two people but he describes it as "venom" and that they are one.. again I argue that you can't have venom without the other part .. can anyone explain to me how to homebrew a pantomime horse "ignoring" the people underneath please?
or can I just essentially make it a pantomime horse "creature"?
I'm going to go ahead and suggest this is probably out of scope for the heroic fantasy adventures that D&D supports. There's a list of species available in the Free Rules, maybe start there.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions
While there may possibly be a way to get to what they have in mind, I feel it's not really a #dnd-newcomers kind of question to address, I'm afraid. Maybe try using the tools the game gives you first.
I have proposed that it can function as it is only moveable and playable with the "two men" inside, but if one dies then the "head" as the wizard can animate the rear to remain playable but only for a short amount of time until it can find a replacement. In addition, it can also have stats of a horse but as it is technically "men" underneath that it would be limited to the stamina of the man - also the magic spells can be performed as one entity but only on the limitation of two performance checks that need to be matched or above a threshold in order for the spell to be played
but he INSISTS that it is a playable pantomime horse
It’s important to remember that D&D is not just freeform roleplaying. It is a game with defined rules and expectations for how it’s played. It sounds like your group may be looking for a game experience that D&D isn’t built to provide
which is what I am quickly beginning to believe with this player, as he now wishes to just play a human with no powers that wants to deliver a letter..
Other games do exist.
I feel pathfinder may be better prepared for this type of character and even then I feel it will dominate the field - it is for one person but still, it limits my abilities as a DM
so was not sure if you guys had any ideas, but thank you for your input 🙂
I don't. You'll just be swapping one set of screwdrivers for another when your goal is to cut down a tree. Maybe Roll For Shoes, or Freeform Universal, or something in the Fate RPG line could help.
ahh I see, the character discussion section sorry
@marble shoal @sacred schooner gotcha!
Hey guys I'm new to dnd, literally never played it before but I've heard about it recently and it's sounds really cool, where can I get the basic starter knowledge I should have?
Damn
There is some basic free rules available! The bot should hopefully link it after I send the message but if it doesn't, I'll just show you the message
Nvm here it is lol

hello
Afternoon
Hi folks. I'm very new to D&D and have no idea what to do 😢 On this server, how do I join groups as a beginner beginner? As in I someone who has never played and has a dragonborn sorceror kind of by accident through auto D&D beyond?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Yes that
Also check #learn-to-play if you need to get down more of the basics. Feel free to ask new player questions here, or you can ask more specific questions in #dnd-rules
And welcome
Brilliant, thank you Hingle
hey So I had a game scheduled for wednesday and had almost finished up prepping. but suddenly out of nowhere 2 of my player quit before our campaign starts. whats up with that? Did I do something wrong? Did I like forget to let them know something? I am very new to this DMing business
It's not unusual for people to ghost for no communicated reason. They may have gotten cold feet. They may have had other plans come up. They may have given up on the hobby.
Odds are good it's not you (though it could be!).
huh. okay so can I list of the things we talked about, And can you tell me if I missed or mishandled anything?
Fire away.
Okay so,
- I explained the concept to them,
- I sent the a list of the gods and deities for their character sheet,
- One of them asked if they can play twilight domain. and I explained as. "there is but it's a bit tough to get. unless certain qualifications are obtained that is." "okay lets just say you need an item to gain that subclass, but you will be a cleric for a lil while." "its gonna be picking from a list of subclasses, but depending on the subclass' strength the chances are lower, but your actions in the game as well as the item type depending on the god can also increase your chances since the gods are technically the ones that will pick for you. they will see what you do and if they favor it. on top of your in game affinity for the sub-class that is"
||Copy pasted it from our convo||
4.I asked them on how they feel if we work on the character stats when we meet up? I felt like it would be more fun if roll not knowing what to find. (I think this threw them off. I'm not sure) anther player said he liked the Idea so IDK. - and then I was designing our session map when I saw the notification of both of them leaving.
Did I miss anything?
Maybe they wanted to play the class without any friction. Impossible to say.
fair. but i had to do something to balance it out.
To be honest, #3 might have been a deal breaker for me
Though I would probably have at least told you rather than ghosting 😅
But online games in particular, it's easy to just disappear to avoid conflict. So I wouldn't take it too personally
yeah fair but tbh twilight domain is kind of OP in since it's suvivability with no real cost, in that it lasts a long time and recharges quickly. There's no real reason not to use it as often as possible. And it really unbalances the game. you know? and like the whole point of me DMing is for everyone to have fun and avoid player V.S DM situation you know?
but I get that I guess
And yes I did copy paste the survivability bit from reddit since I couldn't find a better way to explain it😭😭😭
Twilight Cleric is a decent subclass, but I don't think it's so OP to be avoided like that
It's a Channel Divinity, so you can't do it unlimited times unless you're letting them short rest constantly
Regardless, if a DM doesn't like a subclass, I'd prefer they just say no so I can plan on something else instead
Yes, but maybe no is too much uncertainty for me
is there a good rule of thumb for how far in advance I need to read of the campaign?
Ideally, read the whole thing if it's short enough.
If you're the player, nothing (unless the DM says to). If you're the DM, probably at least the next session/scenario if not more
Your DM will tell you what you need to read, if anything
I'm a bad one to ask, because I wing everything as the default
If the DM is running a campaign set in an official world, then they might want you to read a setting book about that world
For example, if your DM is running an Eberron campaign, then they might ask you to read parts or all of Eberron: Rising From the Last War
sorry, should have said I'm the DM. We're going to be running the lost mines of phandelver.
Read the whole thing so you know the shape of the adventure and so you can decide what, if anything, you want to change.
read it all before the first session?
If possible. If not, read at least the first chapter.
Hi all! Never played the tabletop, but I've been playing BG3. I'm curious if theres something on PC for the tabletop since I dont have friends that play, and I'm not super comfortable going to shops to play
You should read the entire adventure book before starting to run it if you can
There are virtual tabletops (VTT's) that allow you to play online DnD!
Foundry and Roll20 are some well known ones
If you're looking for a game, then you can find online games by reading through #find-a-game
Noted! Someone was also trying to teach me last year, but sadly they werent around much lol
Hi
I’m sorry I’m trying to fill out my first character sheet I’m wondering if someone can help the game starts in 2 hours
have you asked your DM for help?
Are you using dnd beyond?
I’m not really sure I’m just going into a game I’m not sure what they are using
So you’re filling out a physical character sheet?
Yes
Like Omegon said I definitely recommend reaching out to your dm or the other people you’ll be playing with, I’m sure they would love to help you out, I personally have not used physical so I wouldn’t be able to help :/
Did you have a character concept in mind already?
Kinda yes
What have you got on your character sheet so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
I like the idea of a half genasi half celestial wizard
I’m not sure how to fill in the stats
Have you done your ability scores yet?
Down the left-hand side (probably), you should see six big boxes for Strength, Dexterity, etc.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
I did see you roll to see what the outcome is is that right?
11 for strength
4 dexterity
10 constitution
4 intelligence
19 wisdom
20 charisma
Is what I got
You're gonna have a hard time with those numbers.
lol
You rolled using the instructions above? 4d6, keep the highest three?
I rolled randomly
Did your DM ask you to roll? Rolling is only one of the possible ways to get your ability scores.
Right, but what dice you actually roll?
D20
Yeah, don't use a d20.
Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
A d6 is your "normal" game die.
This guy: 🎲
Oh
Roll four of those (or roll one of them four times).
And keep the highest three numbers.
If you roll 6, 2, 4, 3, for example, you'd drop the 2 and add 6 + 4 + 3 = 13.
Do that until you've got six numbers.
And then assign them to your character in whatever order you see fit.
For a wizard, I'd put Intelligence as your highest number, then Constitution, then Dexterity.
?tag new wizard
Wizard
Study arcane magic and master spells for every purpose
Wizards are defined by their exhaustive study of magic’s inner workings. They cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, and spectacular transformations. Their magic conjures monsters from other planes of existence, glimpses the future, or forms protective barriers. Their mightiest spells change one substance into another, call meteors from the sky, or open portals to other worlds.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 8
Dex. 12
Con. 13
Int. 15
Wis. 14
Cha. 10
Likes: Spellbooks
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 6 + Con. modifier
That "Suggested Standard Array assignment" above is one suggestion for assigning your wizard's scores.
Oh man ok
Yea because i tried again with the D 6 and got 1 strength
1 dexterity
3 constitution
1 intelligence
5 wisdom
2 charisma
For each stat, you roll a d6 four times and take away the lowest roll.
Again, you need to roll four d6 for each number, and then drop the lowest of those four, as in the example I gave above. #dnd-newcomers message
Which should give you something between 3 and 18 for each one.
Alternatively, you can use the standard array instead of rolling.
In which case, you'd have a 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8.
Oh ok so I rolled 4 times for each
Roll 4 times and keep the 3 highest rolls for each
Once you keep the 3 highest
Once youve done that 6 times youll have 6 numbers, these are your stats. Distribute them between your 6 stats as you wish
Then add your racial modifiers in the end
(Or the ones from your background instead, if your group is playing with the 2024 core rulebooks.)
Ok I ended up with 12 strength
13 dexterity
13 constitution
11 intelligence
17 wisdom
17 charisma
As a wizard, you really want a high INT.
That's your spellcasting ability, so higher INT = stronger spells.
I'd also recommend a high CON, since that will increase your maximum hit points (which wizards tend to lack) and help you make your stronger spells last longer.
And then I'd keep DEX at 13, since that will improve your Armor Class (AC) and make you harder to hit.
You do not have to put these stats in the same order you rolled them
Hello how do I do all of this stuff this is my first time
Welcome!
There's some helpful info in #learn-to-play to get you started.
But if you've got any specific questions, ask away!
Ok thanks
okay yeah that's true. Welp random encounters per short rests here we come 😁😁😁
Hi there people, I was wondering if anyone could point me in direction of a GM or a server where people advertise games (specifically ones on at like 2pm GMT to 6 pm GMT on Tuesdays to thursdays - I live in NZ and that is the middle of the night for me, as that is the only time I will be free)
Is there any server where people would advertise games? (hosted over discord vc)

hey all! new to dnd, been watching podcasts and stuff for years but never played, whats my go-to for hopping into a newbie game? i assume a paid game, and was looking through the paid game lobby, seems geared towards groups of new players, anyone know of someone that does a game at time, all random players and all new players? thanks!
Hi all! Just wanted to ask me and my girlfriend is looking for a D n D group we might be able to join in. We are new to the game and wanted to try it out do you guys have any suggestions or groups we might be able to join for a new adventure?
You can look in the #find-a-game channel for instructions and answers to frequently asked questions - a good starter point in looking for a group. Otherwise you can check things like local clubs, game stores, or check online TTRPG forums.
also, Harpsy, there is no dedicated Necromancer class, but Clerics and Wizards eventually get access to the Animate Dead spell in order to have undead minions.
Thank you very much bro, Do I just ask the same things there? Sorry I'm new to this
from the 2014 phb (and thus technically for the 2014 version)
the 2024 Wizard has only started with Abjurer, Diviner, Evoker, and Illusionist
2014 subclasses are backwards compatible with 2024
Necromancy wizard is functional in 2024
Technically, but DNDBeyond is struggling right now with implementing 2014 subclasses in 2024 versions of the main classes.
DDB doesn't dictate RAW
It's more of a "Don't be shocked if you can't easily do that on DNDBeyond", due to said struggling with how things should be going
Hi! I'm looking to get in to DND, any advice?
Here's some useful resources

yeah, always welcoming new people. best way to learn is to either watch other people play (youtube, twitch and so on) or play it yourself. I would recommend you get together with a group that you trust, if you can't find a group irl, try online play
Well, my partner wants to host a game, but he's been saying that for over a year and hasn't started. How would I look for people online? I had similar issues when learning blood on the clocktower
does you partner have people to start a game with in the first place? if not then you can find people to play with online in either this or other discord servers.
There's a few friends interested, but no one really seems to actually do much about it.
I kinda just wanna give it a try to get the hang of things
people in the dnd community is often shy introverts (myself included) so it can be hard to take initiative and start something up. but if your partner is talking about hosting a game, you should absolutely support them and help get things started. if you don't have much experience I can recommend trying out a one-shot before committing to a whole campaign
I see! Thank you. I often try and help him figure things out. He's very creative, but isn't the most motivated.

no problem. just remember to support each other, and you'll get something started for sure
Tysm
But if you're looking to help your partner come up with something, some resources that might help them could include Peril in Pinebrook, Sly Flourish's Lazy DM advice and the Five Room Dungeon method.
Thank you!! I'll have a look in to those
Hi peoples! I wasn't sure where I should ask this. I'm new to this version of D&D. Haven't played in a few years and never heard of adventure league until recently.
My question is, am I able to make a character ahead of time or do I make it there on my first session?
For Adventurer's League specifically? You totally can make a character ahead of time, that's what AL is designed for
You need to check out the specific rules for AL character creation, it has a few extra limitations in order to allow AL to work. For that, I recommend checking out the AL channels; #adventurers-league
Oh snap! I must have glossed over and not saw that section! Thank you! I'll wander over!
Hello, so read the free starter rules, ordered the 2024 PHB and GMG and the monster manual. Any other must have source books ? (2024)
You might consider a pre-written adventure book to run.
https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/adventures
Or books with more player options, like Tasha’s Cauldron if Everything, or Monsters of the Multiverse.
This is the one included in the newest Player’s Handbook:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
But there’s no one format you have to use.
Oh ok mine looks nothing like that one I got mine from the essentials kit and it looks different
Oh but why is it different and got a extra thing of character sheets they also look like that
they just wanted a new design for the new book.
Because they change and update the layout to improve how easy it is to find things, and give people options on which layout they find easiests
They both track the same information, though.
Ya ik I was just curious as to why they are different hah
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter where or how your information is recorded, as long as you’ve got something that works for you.
(Though your DM might have a preference to keep the group consistent.)
Oh ok i don't have a dm haven't played the game yet I have it just no one wants to play it rn hah
Well no need to worry about character sheets then at this point
Pick one that you like and worst case you'll just need to copy the info over
Well me and my friends made the characters I made mine in dnd beyond but my friend doesn't wanna be dm he asked me too but I don't how to do it he's had experience in being a dm I don't it'll my first time playing it
Every DM was new once, if you’d like DMing advice there’s #dm-discussion
Thanks... What adventure is good for starters (other than dragons of stormwreck isle) ?
Lost Mine of Phandelver and Dragon of Icespire Peak are popular choices for new folks.
Thanks !
Bith are 2024 compatible ? Are all the adventures on their website 2024 compatible ? 2024 is the latest editio. Right ? based on the DND ONE
According to the company, all official 2014 adventures are compatible with 2024 rules. I don't have firsthand experience to know how smooth that is.
There are no changes to how the core rules work that would break either adventure
You can use the 2014 monsters in the 2014 adventures against 2024 characters and they'll find it slightly easier than they would have previously.
If you use 2014 adventures with 2024 monsters against 2024 characters you do need to do a quick sense check. Especially if it's a puzzle fight (fight is intentionally too hard and requires doing something other than running in)
Ok thank you
Just wondering is it common for paid games to transition to free once people realize everyone is committed? Or is it more commonly paying every session?
I’ve been using trifling do you know if there’s any better character
"Better" in what sense?
No idea - likely no but every group is different.
Yeah, that's something you'd have to discuss with the DM before the game starts.
I would recommend you never assume this is going to happen and, unless explicitly stated otherwise, paid games will remain paid indefinitely
Cool ty guys, wasn't sure if there was a common expectation
Well I’m like using melee weapons and sorcery’s
"Better" is relative anyway.
Not sure what you mean. Are you asking what classes fit the Tiefling species?
I was thinking about using wizards
Ok thx
Just to clarify:
You're set on Tiefling, but still trying to choose a class?
Or you're looking for an alternative to Tiefling?
No I’ve been using trefiling but I might try to switch it up
What do you want from your species that you're not getting from Tiefling?
Cuz most of the dungeon masters make the villagers scared because there almost always an elf but I only play with two dungeon masters
So it's purely for aesthetic or lore reasons that you're looking to switch?
Yeah
In that case, I'd recommend discussing it with your DMs first.
Let them know what you're looking for, and find out what they recommend.
Ok thx
Hey guys!! I’m new and don’t know much about dnd but have been interested in it for a while!!

hey everyboddie houw are you guys doing
Welcome!
Hi
so how do you play D&D i hav 0 exiriens
#learn-to-play has some good info to get you started.
But did you have any specific questions?
Hello, I'm new to this server. Is there any provision for talking about older editions of D&D here?
Yup, the #dnd-elder-editions channel was created for that purpose.
Ah, brilliant, thank you!
How I play on dnd beyond
This article goes over the basics:

Nah like how I join a campaign

After your DM creates a campaign on D&D Beyond, they'll find an invite URL at the top of the campaign page.
If they send you that link, you can use it to join the campaign with a new or existing character.
Check out #learn-to-play and the rules linked in the pinned messages of this channel!
I finished making my first character on D&D beyond today 😄
Nice! What kind?
Yeee what'd you make?
Nice
Cool
Apparently alot of ppl go for that combo
What wepon things did u choose (I think they are called proficiencys or something)
Weapon masteries is the "if you attack someone with a warhammer they get pushed back by ten feet"
Proficiency is something else that basically works out as a +2 (or more depending on character level) to hit with any weapon that falls in certain criteria.
You can pick any weapon, just suggested you pick a weapon you are proficient in
Yeah I know
I was asking what wepons there character was proficient in
Proficiency is typically fixed based on class. Masteries is the one you choose.
Hey, I've been interested in DnD for about a year now and have been in this server for just as long. However, I still don't know exactly what to do or how to get started. Do you guys know any places where I can join an online campaign?
ME TOO, I used to be in an online campaign with some of my friends but we all got busy and dropped it, I’m feigning for a new one
hellloooo
Can someone please explain how newcommers can get into games in here? I would appreciate it.
or is there a channel I can read to get started?
Hey there. Here on the server we have separate channels for group finding: #find-a-game
That isn't to say that this server is the only place to look, but it's a good start.
even for those who have experienced DnD only in BG3? 😄 I kind of got interested and wanted to try it out. I have never played before.
Sure. BG3 may not totally match what D&D is but it's a lot closer than no experience at all.
To prepare, I would recommend giving the rules a look though: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
I sure will! Thanks a million. ♥

Also there's a separate thing for finding games
Hello
Afternoon Nikita
how are you?
Helloo
how are you?
I am great and u
pretty good thank you!
How are u?
i’m doing well, thankyou.
i’m doing well, thankyou.
happy to hear
In which time zone are you located?
CST
Hey fine folks! Let’s keep things on topic - timezones isn’t really the topic for this channel! 😉
It's just a lot of information. I don't know how or where to start. I did go through the basic rules, but that's all.
same it is a bit overwhelming
Ikr? It's honestly a lot.
Maybe we can figure it out together. Have you played any campaigns yet!!?
The best way to learn the game is by playing it. Experience is the best teacher imo!
Still, the main things you need to know are the ones that you need to note in your character sheet and what actions can be taken in combat.
You will figure the rest with time :D
Nope never always tried to find a local group but no luck so now Im trying to find a beginner friendly online group
Yeah, true!
Problem is, I don’t really have anyone to play with.
My friends aren’t really interested, and none of us have experience. I’m not sure if starting as a DM without knowing much myself is a good idea either. i was planing on finding some online campaigns, Any suggestions?
I remember deciding to be a DM only after playing 4 to 5 sessions in another game.
It can be overwhelming at first, but it's doable. Depends if you like the idea of becoming a DM.
if you need some online groups, this server has chats for that iirc
Yeah, local groups are impossible to find where I’m at too. I’ve been looking online but it’s kinda overwhelming when you’re just starting out. Feels like everyone already knows what they’re doing.
I do like the idea of becoming a DM
But local groups are difficult to find or create
where can i find those chats for online groups here?
probably #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community but didnt really find any for new begginers
If they don't specify, you can always ask if they're open to new players!
As Rogue I got Weapon Mastery at level 1, and use it for shortsword and dagger.
Can I use dagger nick weapon mastery to attack with both shortsword and dagger as part of one action, and then use bonus action and light property of weapon to make another attack?
No. The Light weapon property is once per turn, even if you move it with Nick
If you want to go for the sequence Shortsword -> Dagger -> Shortsword (Bonus Action), you need to use the Dual Wielder feat.
I'm confused. Doesn't that just increase your AC by +1 and lets you stow 2 weapons at once instead of 1?
Aha, nevermind, two editions.
What's AC? Agility Check?
Oh ok mines only 12 for a human druid
That's not very high, but with a bit of luck, your character can stay back while someone with a higher ac gets more attention from adversaries.
If you have a shield, you can also equip that for a +2 bonus to AC.
I mean he's only level 1
Yup yup, but a fighter will probably have at last 16 AC. Never hurts to be cautious!
Wildshape will give good sirvival for low levels
What survival good for?
Not dying
2014 atleast, idk how 2024 wildshape works
Note that Luuk isn't talking about the Survival skill but rather the ability to persevere in combat in general
The skill? See here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Skills
Follow tracks, forage, find a trail, or avoid natural hazards.
ah, I missed the context
I can understand the confusion
Once you get lvl 2 just get moon druid and get like 40 hp from your bear 🙂
Oh ok ya im new so I know nothing of the game yet
Well, enjoy
Youll learn by playing
Well, depends on the druid version. 2024 would be a different subclass level and different thp.
Yeh fair enough, neither me nor my group have touched 2024 so i have no clue what im working with there.
No worries, just giving a heads up. When new people look at the game, it's likely that they're going to look at the new rules. Then it's contra productive to tell them old info.
Ya i haven't played yet

Hello, I have a party for 'traditional' D&D, i just need to know what to expect because I only have the 5e players handbook
Talk to your DM and group - every table is different about the tone and style of play
Ik there's more classes, races, and origions then the 5e one says, but im not sure if they blend together with other editions
Ok, I will talk to them during our session zero
Many D&D groups are fine with playing with core character options
So I could play a revenant, in theory, in 5e playing. because that race isnt in my notebook
my handbook*
You'd need to check with your group (revenant is not a player character option - it's a monster statblock).
So allowing something like that would be "homebrew"
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Thank you so much
But what about the artificer class? I thought it wasnt in 5e
nvm, i dont want to trouble you anymore.
Artificer is available in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything book
That's still 5e - just a different book which has that information.
Oh, so its like a dlc but irl
Yep - it's not a "core" class
There are also subclasses that are not "core" which can be found in other books.
You can play D&D with just the free rules.
The books just provide more options.
An example of a subclass option not available in the free rules or core books would be Barbarian: Path of the Giant which can be found in Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants book.
How does everybody here do it? Do you follow canon campaigns to get to level 20, do you homebrew the entire campaign, or a little of both? I'm just looking into how DMs add their players backstories into the main campaign with it being an actual DnD campaign.
I have a question, cause I’m making my first Homebrew campaign but I have no idea how to incorporate music, what’s a good app or like website
If by canon, you mean official modules, most of those don't go up to level 20. In fact that level tends to be pretty rare, and only something a really long campaign is gonna reach, generally
Most modules do have some leeway to incorporate player backstories, and even offer some plot hook, but lot of the time the DM will need to do a bit of work to fit things together
The folks in #third-party or #dnd-media might have some suggestions.
Hi guys, new here to D&D and have always wanted to try the game. Have zero experience and went on to the looking for players thread and found it pretty overwhelming and there seems to be a lot of games that are ongoing or have a lot of things going on that I have no idea what they're putting on the info tabs. Seems to be a lot of "competition" in terms of getting slots based on the Responses-to-AvailableSlots ratio as well. Is this normal?
Yes, this is fairly normal. There is a well observed overabundance of players, not just because DMs also want to play.
To increase your chances of getting into a game, I recommend reading the onboarding posts carefully, as DMs will often do some filtering there already.
Now it's about finding a group. You can try here: #find-a-game explains how.
You can also try to look for groups in other places.
Check out iamrazorwings unofficial guide for that:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
I see, thanks for the info and feedback.
Unexpectedly feels like finding a job, but I get it. I'll see where this goes, thanks again ^_^

Heya I’m new to dnd and I’ve made my character but I’m struggling to make my character sheet anyone mind helping? ^^
Have you picked a class, species and background?
Yes!
How about ability scores? I always recommend using the standard array method.
I believe so but I have no clue if it’s balanced
The numbers out of the standard array are presets, so no worry there.
What's good for your character will depend on which class they are.
I see, I’m quite confused about the saving throws and skills as well
I’ve tried to fill them but again i have no idea if it’s correct :’
Class determines which types of saves your character has proficiency in.
Proficiency gives you a little boost to the dice (+2 at first level, more as you level up).
Your class and background let you pick a number of skills to have proficiency in.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Which one are you?
Paladins use their Charisma for spells and some other features, so that needs to be high. They often fight in close combat, so good Strength and Constitution are useful but because they can use heavy armour Dexterity is less of a priority.
Do you mind if I send you a picture of my character sheet through dms?
Go ahead.
Thank you!!
can someone rate this character pls https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/126209368
Ability scores look a little high, so I'm presuming rolled. Problem there is DMs don't tend to accept rolls they didn't see.
If it is some form of point-buy you should chip a point off Charisma and put it in Dex. Otherwise, all good.
maybe ask in #character-discussion?
Shouldn't there be 2 channels, one for D&D 2014 and one for 2024?
Nope, as they're both D&D 5th edition
Do we preface each question with the version of the edition?
The only different is the core rule books; 2014 PHB, DMG, and MM vs 2024 PHB, DMG and MM
Everything else is the same
Gotcha.
If the year version is relevant to the question, sure
Folks here will probably assume you mean 2024 unless you specify otherwise.
Hey I recently got into the game with a friend group in college and now that friend groups now disbanded leaving just me.
I’m looking to better understand the games rules so one day I may be able to DM
Welcome! #dnd-rules can always help if you have questions about a specific rule.
(Helping to answer questions in there can be good practice for answering questions at your table, too!)
Heya, fair ill head there now
I'm confused about cunning action hide for rogue. You'd only use that in-combat, but it isn't invisibility - you can't hide if someone sees you, so what's the point?
Because hiding is normally an action, so being able to hide as a bonus action leaves you free to use your action
And the idea is you hide behind something
While the rogue is hidden the character can't be targeted. Also hiding offers you the opportunity to use your Sneak Attack ability which is the rogue's main source of damage.
Making an attack while hidden gives you advantage on the attack. (And then leaves you un-hidden.)
But yes, hiding in an open field might not work. But if you're in an open library or in a cave with big rocks or crevices you're golden.
Right. Also that.
Yes, I understand, but I don't understand how it works.
I'm melee slashy-slashy. I use cunning action hide with movement behind something. How do I use my attack action to sneak attack because I'd have to walk back from where I come from... and in combat, all creatures are aware everywhere.
So it only works with range?
Yeah, probably not viable in that case.
(You'll want to pay attention to level 3's Steady Aim instead.)
So, I use cunning action + movement to hide, and from hiddne position I use range attack for stealth damage?
No, there's no "stealth damage"
You get advantage on the attack because you're an unseen attacker
Sneak Attack*
That advantage could allow you to use sneak attack which would give you additional damage
And you can use Sneak Attack because you have advantage.
Steady Aim similarly gives you advantage (and therefore a chance to use Sneak Attack) by standing your ground.
So when you're in melee range and not moving anyway, it's an easy way to boost that attack.
Also hiding isn't just useful for getting sneak attack, it's also good for shaking off enemy attention so you can reposition for example
What about the "creature in combat is alert of all danger around it" and you can't use hiding against it?
That's the part that confuses me.
Hey! I'm new around here and DnD. A friend told me to play with him and I agreed, but I really have no idea right now of what to do :').
I'd like to play something related to archery, mixed with stealth if possible, but I don't know what class or classes I should play (my friend told me there were multi classes or smth), as well as subclasses.
Do you have any recommendations? I guess I should have rogue as first or second class, but I don't know if I should mix it or not
that doesn't mean what you think it means
It means the game doesn't using facing
There's no "behind" or "blind spot", it means a creature has 360 situational awareness, not just in the direction they're looking
So, does that mean I can use cunning action hiding in-combat?
If you can find a place to hide, yeah.
it means it's possible to hide during combat full stop
So, I have to use an object or creatire that blocks the enemy's line of sight to use hide action, correct?
Yes
Unless invisible, you can't hide if someone is looking directly at you and can see you
Welcome! I generally wouldn't recommend multiclassing if you're new.
But if you want stealth and archery, rogue is indeed a good choice.
Enemy X is middle of the room. Room has 4 pillars. I go behind one pillar and use cunning action hide. It is normal hall, not darkness, no shadows. Given the enemy has 360 awareness, it seen me go behind the pillar. It lost line-of-sight. Am I able to hide, and am I hidden, or am I not hidden?
SO, being heavily obscured is optional then.
No, it's not.
But being behind the pillar obscures you.
Well...
To do so, you must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity (Stealth) check while you’re Heavily Obscured or behind Three-Quarters Cover or Total Cover, and you must be out of any enemy’s line of sight; if you can see a creature, you can discern whether it can see you.
Aha, my apologies; I thought heavily obscured is only when you're in darkness, fog, etc.
Technically the pillar here counts as full cover.
So rule-wise, you're right. It's not actually "Heavily Obscured".
Damn, is it just me or it's a very complicated system. 😄
generally dms will just tell you if it is or isnt possible to hide, then give a dc for it
Okay, that's what I thought :'). Multiclass seemed more like an advanced mechanic ^^
I'll focus on understanding the rogue then :P.
The Gloomstalker subclass for ranger is also an option. But rogues will always be better at stealth.
OK, so I walk behind pillar, roll over 15, I was able to get hidden.
"if you can see a creature, you can discern whether it can see you."
Does that mean if I stick out and try to take a sneak-attack with my bow, is my hide condition cancelled? Since I can see the creature, then it means it can see me as well?
Yes. But only after the attack.
OK, so I got one attack with advantage from all this work, that is a range attack.
Gotcha.
You stop being hidden immediately after any of the following occurs: you make a sound louder than a whisper, an enemy finds you, you make an attack roll, or you cast a spell with a Verbal component.
if you hide behind a pillar and then sneak attack. the creature will know youre there after you make the attack
So you don't lose anything. You just gotta hide again if you want to stay hidden.
Which you can do with your bonus action
When a creature can’t see you, you have Advantage on attack rolls against it.
If you are hidden when you make an attack roll, you give away your location when the attack hits or misses.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#UnseenAttackersandTargets
I am actually a little surprised that people are saying that you can't achieve this in melee. I thought you could.
OK, so: I move behind pillar, cunning bonus action hide, pass my stealth check, I'm hidden. I get one attack with advantage and my location is revealed once more whether hit or miss. All clear.
Youd have to have cover somewhere within half your movement speed
If you want to hide again.
YOu'd also engage attack of opportunity each time, since you're using cunning action to hide rather than disengange, so it's bad idea.
There's probably a bit of DM fiat to that one.
It only works with range.
And you deal extra damage with Sneak Attack.
OK, one final question on sneak attack. If I get multiple classes i.e. figther and get 2 attacks per turn, would both attacks trigger a sneak attack? It says once per -TURN-.
Are 2 attacks, 2 turns in one round?
You can only use Sneak Attack once per turn -- so on one of your two attacks that turn.
The advantage to having two attacks is that if the first misses, you still have a chance to get Sneak Attack with the second.
(If the first hits, you definitely want to use Sneak Attack on that one, since the second could miss.)
Is there a way to turn reaction into an attack, and thus trigger 2 sneak attacks?
Anyway the cool thing about rogues is that (despite the memes about them being lone wolves) they flourish when they have friends alongside them. The Sneak Attack feature also activates when an ally is next to the enemy.
A turn is you going.
A round is everyone going.
So you can sneak attack twice in a round if something happens that allows you to use your reaction to attack on someone else's turn. Like dissonant whispers.
Do tell please.
The most common situation is when an enemy (in melee range) moves away from you on their turn. You can then make an opportunity attack using your reaction in hopes of getting Sneak Attack, too.
You can also use the Ready action to define your own reaction for that round.
Thief rogue, bribing your DM for bracer of flying daggers to attack as a bonus action, then readying your main action to attack.
If an enemy isn't close enough to attack, but you suspect they'll rush up to you, you might take the Ready action to attack when an enemy moves into range.
I was pretty that the dissonant whispers spell forced creatures to run away.
Battlemaster, fighter. Huh. This seems great - riposte is exactly what would suit my character. I think I'll go assasin/battle master.
They use their reaction and their own movement to do so. As such, it is movement that can trigger opportunity attacks.
You'd be correct for something like thunder wave, which just moves whatever it hits.
5 battlemaster, 15 rogue or something like that.
Worth noting that Rogues can already attack twice per turn by using Light weapons.
If you use the Nick weapon mastery, you can make it even more effective.
is there any free DnD games Im completley new and I would like to learn.
#looking-for-players would be where to look!

Hey there! I’m on here looking for a bit of guidance. I have absolutely no clue on where to start and how to get into playing dnd. The idea and how people have described in makes it seem very fun but everytime I went to make a character I got discouraged. With the help of a co-worker, I was finally able to make my first character and was reaching out on here of hopes of finding a group that would be willing to help me out on trying a campaign. Anything helps!

Hello, i am new at DnD, i just bought my first dice set and i would like to play, i am a complete beginner but i know some Basic rules of the game, i am looking someone to play with, beginner or advanced player, i want to learn and just have fun, thanks for any feedback 🙏😋
You might wanna search through #looking-for-players!
Oh, thank you very much 🙏
Does the looking for players go by city and state?
You're more likely to find online games through the posts. Not to say there are no in-person ads, but I suspect they are few and far between.
If you want a local game, you're better off searching locally.
Check your local library or game store, for example.
Or an online forum dedicated to events in your area.
Hi! I'm new to D&D. I did some research so i think i know the basic rules. But i don't have any equipment as of yet. Can i still play without physical dice?
Yep! You can roll dice online for free through websites or some virtual tabletops!
thank you so much! i'm looking to play an online game but the requests on the looking-for-players seem to be daunting. Is there any way to find a group of players who are willing to take a total newbie or maybe a group of new players ?
There's no specific section for beginner-friendly games, unfortunately. You'll need to search to see if anyone mentions being open to new folks, but many don't think to do that. So the likeliest route is to just ask!
alright. Thank you for helping!
If you have a group but need a DM, post your particulars in #looking-for-dm .
Check #find-a-game for how to do that.
i don't but thank you! i'll check it out.
How do you reply to looking for players messages? just message the person asking?
In the thread under their posting. Or send them a direct message if they specify that as their preference.
ok cool
Thank you
If my rogue is disarmed, is his hand-to-hand treated as a fines weapon for sneak attack?
Not RAW because it isn't a finesse or ranged weapon as far as I know.
No. Unarmed strikes lack the finesse and/or ranged properties required for sneak attack.
Hmmm.

If you haven’t checked already there’s a bunch of newbie resources in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play , including a link to the Free Rules. I recommend reading through and making a practice character as you go along. I say to do this before joining a group because it helps set expectations for the game and makes it easier to join a group if you come in knowing stuff already.
If you feel ready, you can use #find-a-game to use this server to find a group. But this isn’t the only place to do so. Here’s some other ideas:
- Other TTRPG & DnD discord servers
- TTRPG & DnD social media groups (e.g. Reddit’s r/lfg)
- TTRPG & DnD forums (e.g. roll20, D&DBeyond forums)
- Local game stores & libraries
- School clubs (if you’re in school/uni)
Role? Do you mean deciding between being a DM or player?
no I mean like Cleric, paladin like healer/tank uknow? what class
(class not role :D))
I’d say pick which one has the mechanics you vibe with better. D&D doesn’t really have traditional MMO roles like “DPS, Healer, and Tank”
Cleric is often considered, or rather misconceptualized as a “healbot” for example, but only 1 subclass really focuses on healing abilities. It’s actually a very customizable class
ohh I see thankyou
I am glad that i am not the only one that Is trying to learn the game, i would love to make some sessions online with some of you
Hello I’m kinda new to this I mostly play bg3
Hello guys
Feel free to put together a group (use private messages though - we don't allow soliciting/game organization in the discussion channels) and someone can post in #looking-for-dm for the group using the bot commands. See #find-a-game for information on how to do that.
Or you can look for games posted in #looking-for-players (message the poster or use the thread attached to the post to communicate interest) and #looking-for-community
I tried but it says i dont have a permission to write there
Did you read the really important information and instructions in #find-a-game ?
No worries! Again you can private message the person posting the game or use the thread attached to the game posting to indicate interest.
But to post in the Looking For Game channels you have to use the bot.
I want to ask somthing
Sure go ahead
What’s the differences between the versions
You mean different editions of D&D?
The current edition is 5th edition
Different editions may have significant differences in game mechanics and character options/roles.
If you mean the difference between 2024 and 2014 rules in 5th edition - there's really not a lot of differences.
The 2024 updates are more of polishing up and refinement of the 2014 materials.
Ok, i will try that, thank you 🙏
What’s a good online version
Currently 5th edition is the most widely available edition (as it's the current edition).
You can find the free rules online here at DnDBeyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I have one question. can i ask
Sure - you don't have to ask to ask
I just don’t want to bother you
ok okay. Should i look for a specific tag(the offers in the looking for community ) for newbies? or its just usually open to everyone?
I'd recommend looking for any posts that specify beginners or new players, but lots of folks don't say they're open, even if they actually are. If you find there aren't many that do specify, find games you are interested in and ask the posters if they're open to new players!
What’s some things do I need to know from bg3 that’s different from dnd
The rules linked earlier tell you what you need to know. Going over the differences would probably take just as much time.
Hello hello
You can't revive people using an action when they go down you have to heal them using something that restores hp. The best you can do otherwise is stabilise them which stops them from bleeding out.
You can't attack with an offhand weapon as a bonus weapon unless you specifically attack with a different light weapon first.
Those are the two main ones I have to tell people a lot at the game shop.
I recently decided to start dnd. Tho I'm not sure what I'm doing

hello
Hi free
So question…
This is an idea for a Discord bot I have, (I’ll copy and paste what I have about the “what this bot is for”), and I’m wondering if there’s already a fully functional free version of D&D that’s exclusively digital? So no need to meet people irl (ew socializing)
Purpose of this bot:
this bot will enable players to utilize the entire D&D franchise from a single bot, from character creation, keeping track of inventories, Battles, Storyline, map creation etc.
You will be able to make multiple characters, Each character will have a “save file” that will track its levels, stats, Equipment, weight, inventory, good/evil, And so much more.
You will be able to search for specific rules or monsters (or search for types or other stuff) or create your own monsters (as a DM) or you will be able to select/search from a list of preset magical items or create your own (exclusively for DM’s).
And so much more!!
This bot will help bring a digital version of Dungeons & Dragons To life, enabling almost anyone who wants to play, but lacks the social ability to go out and meet new people, to do so!
All you need is discord, and the ability to listen to a DM through VC)
Copy & pasted as promised
Not sure if your question relates to learning the game. You might find better help in general #dnd-discussion
That being said, the free version of 5e is the content found within the Free Rules (as seen in this channel’s pins and #learn-to-play ). Online campaigns are extremely popular as well so you’d only need to meet people IRL if you wanted an in-person game.
Your bot would need to compete with D&DBeyond, D&D’s official tool, as well as pretty much every other VTT.
What is VTT?
Virtual Tabletop
Oooo, ty
That was very well written, tyvm
Such as roll20, Foundry, Owlbear Rodeo, and Sigil
hey question
whats the ruling on abilities? im assuming i cant jusr reroll infinitely until i get some good rolls. But if i get a god roll on my first roll is it valid?
if i select to roll for abilities, do i need the DM present for the roll. in that case, if i were to use the character in another campaign, would i have to then roll again in front of that DM
I'm using D&D beyond to create a character. At the section where you get like 100 GP and have the option to buy equipment, You convert that GP instead into money? Because I noticed it has like a money option at the very bottom. My character's technically an aristocrat so if possible I'd like to convert it to money just for lore reasons
Would it be really bad to just keep my money and not opt for the starting gear?
Usually yes. Most classes need at least some of their starting equipment to function. What class are you?
The uhh rogue?
A rogue will have a hard time without weapons, for one.
You probably want some armor, too.
As for this, since your question slipped through:
You can do whatever stat method you want if you’re just making a practice character, theorycrafting, etc. Using rolled stats in a game is almost exclusively done at a DM’s request and done under their supervision to prevent cheating (aka re-rolling constantly until you get a good array, or just manually setting scores and claiming they were rolled). Because of this it’s recommended to use Standard Array or Point Buy to make characters you want to play but haven’t found a campaign for yet.
As for character transfer, it’s rare but not unheard of to play the same character in another DM’s game. There’s a lot of nuance to the situation, but generally the stat method for a character is still up to the second DM; they may require you to reroll or use another method for stat generation. You will likely also have to reset any items, levels, narrative etc gained from the first DM’s campaign.
Hey guys, I’ve been playing D&D for about a year now as a player. I’m starting a The Hoard of The Dragon Queen with a couple of party’s as a first time DM. Any advice?
Have you read the Dungeon Master section of the basic rules? It has some useful advice.
I might have, If I did I don’t remember it. I also have the Dungeon Masters Handbook but I’ve only skimmed it.
My biggest advice is to remember that this is collaborative storytelling. You work with the players to tell an awesome story. Be fair but be challenging and consistent.
Hoard of the Dragon Queen was released before 5e was, so lot of things in it are unbalanced and kind of notoriously "railroady", so it can be a bit difficult for first time. One suggestion is to check some sdvice on how others have handled specific parts of the adventure, like in #1029833015423143957
We've also got #dm-discussion for DMing help and advice 😎
Thanks 🙂
I missed the #dm-discussion I’ll look into it.
Hi dont know anything dnd related but watched a playthrough dmed by koibu with OTV members, was wondering where to get started, making my first character/finding a group to play with ect.

Hey guys im looking for a DM, could anyone explain me how to create a ticket?
See #find-a-game , you'll find a command listed to make a ticket
The command will give you options to fill in, so just follow those, and the server rules #rules
Thx so much :))
Hi, I was wondering where I go to find a gaming group to play D&D with ?
#find-a-game is where all the info is on game finding within this server (and also more in general)
I would recommend taking the starting gear for rouge and then getting the money from your bacround
Here's the explanation:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Dice
You'll have to go through some of that text. It explains most of how the game works.
Most often I've seen them use spells to attack, so no weapons at all. But they could use simple weapons like a quarterstaff.
wait if they dont use weapons what dice do they roll to attack
The spells themselves will say how many dice to roll.
When you look at your class, there'll be a section called "Weapon Proficiencies". For sorcerers, it says "simple weapons". In the section with weapons, you'll see a simple weapon are things like daggers and quarterstaffs.
In your class, you'll also see "starting equipment" and there's almost certainly a simple weapon in that list you can start with. ✌️
Fireball is a level 5+ thing. If you start at level 1, you'll likely be attacking with spells like Fire Bolt.
Can you spot how much damage it deals?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618890-fire-bolt
wait so i roll 1 D10
That's the damage if you hit, yes.
wait d10 is 0-9
First you'll be making a ranged spell attack (it also says that) and if you hit, you deal 1d10 damage.
Some d10s use those numbers yeah. If you just roll one, treat the 0 as a 10.
If you were in a fight, your character would have dealt 6 fire damage to their target.
how much does vecna have hp im not fighting vecna but im curious
272, but Vecna is a very tough opponent - not something you're likely to face
yea
btw i have question about dungeon floor i made
so i đade it like s floor where there is pressure plates and if u step on wrong one u get teleported to beggining of the floor
made*
is that good enough
Sounds like a solid trap
Mostly an obstacle which players could presumably remember the location of to avoid it, or make use of it
for seccond floor i made small open area with living statues there and they guard the door to 3rd floor "tavern or safe zone"
at what floor should i make my players face an a boss
Hey is it possible to be a dragonborn rouge? Just wondering since I was wanting this for my character
totally possible
Any species can be used with any class
Im gonna be honest I though rouge was a race when I started dnd💔
Anyone knows if there are sessions to teach new players? To explain. Everything? (Aside making a character, though id really need explanation about how to get them stats rolling)
Don't roll for stats, use the standard array method.
Aside from that, you can find games here with #find-a-game or elsewhere with LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums for starters. Most games are perfectly happy to take new players but do read the descriptions and ask their DMs if you have any questions.
Thats fantastic, thank you for the quick answer!

dnd is too hard 😦
Have you tried reading the relevant rules? You don't have to read them all
Literally chapter 1, Playing the Game, is all you need to get started
can anyone just tell me i need it asap 😦
No, that's not how it works
We don't know what enemies you're fighting (it'd be quicker for you to look them up), we don't know what classes you and your brother are playign (again, quicker for you to look it up) or what hit points you have (you guessed it, easier for you to look it up)
Like, presumably if you're playing D&D you've done the character creation process and should have character sheets that list your maximum and current hit points
What do v and s mean in components for spells
I want to play a ranger who lurks in the dark, stalks enemies and darkness like a sort of darkness based damage (like the opposite of radiant damage) does that exist?
Sounds exactly like the Gloomstalker subclass for Ranger!
Is that in normal 5e? Or do I have to home brew it
That’s an official subclass.
Thanks!!
Most recently found in the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
(If your group is using the 2014 PHB, you’ll want the version in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything instead.)

hey where could I find different custom classes?
Hi, are there like teams willing to take newcomers? I'm wondering if being new affects somehow the roleplay because maybe I'm pausing too much to ask doubts. Is it better to initiate will a fill squad of newcomers ?
Custom classes could theoretically be infinite and no source would help. If yer in D&D beyond, u can search home brew classes and you’ll find probably 10’s of 1000’s
I also would highly, highly recommend not attempting to use a custom class as a new player.
I like having a mix of veterans and new folks.
Most games are usually open to accepting newcomers, even if it's not in their LFG description. It's best to be open about it when you're reaching out to the DM in any case. And the more you know the better, so while you're waiting it's always helpful to keep reading into the rules!
D&D Beyond does not support custom classes FYI
Hello, I am Luke, From the UK, brand new to D&D (played twice) but absolutely love it! Still learning so much and am so intrigued on learning more. Currently doing a half 1 shot half campaigny thing with my brother and his friends but with work schedules and whatnot, its very hard for us all to find time to play. If anyone wants to start a group with this newbie and show me the ropes, I would certainly appreciate it. Would love to try out "proper" D&D with some hard enthusiasts. This game has genuinely taken over my life, its all I think about and I would love to play when I can't "play" if you catch me. FANKS!!

You are correct there are no home brew classes, but there are home brew subclasses that are basically a work around for not having a home brew class
Please don't ping me
You said "u can search home brew classes and you’ll find probably 10’s of 1000’s" which is neither what you just said, nor accurate or helpful to newcomers
Sorry I replied to your message and didn’t realize it would ping you
I find that there over 20,000 home brew sub-classes on D&D Beyond which can be used to over all homebrew your characters over all class and how it plays in the game. That’s just what is on their site alone. If one were to search the entire World Wide Web , I would fathom a guess that you could find FAR more than that. So my apologies for a slight misuse of the terminology, but I believe my thought answered the question appropriately and was to drive home the point that there is an endless amount of ways to play the game.
Hello all! I am looking to get into dnd. I just want to use what the dnd website has. What would be recommended to get? Also how do you find groups?
Hey domakind,

Howdy
Does anyone have a promo code for the dnd beyond website? I'm looking to buy the physical starter kit for the dragons of stormwreck Isle for my first campaign thank you
How urgently do you need it? Wizards is launching a new 'starter kit' with the updated rules later this year that looks (if you can trust the hype) pretty amazing. If you could, maybe wait for the new fancy one, or the discounts that are sure to come on the older one 😋
Trying to get my hands on the product in the next month so I can begin the campaign in July. Thanks for the heads up!
you could probably also get started with the free rules offered on dnd beyond. It doesn't have quite everything, but to get started it's more than enough.
the new starter set isn't coming out till septemer 😒
Nice I'll look into that. I appreciate your response

ok thanks!
For two weapon fighting since it doesn't let you dual wield, what is the benefit of it? I don't understand what it allows you to do
Normally using two weapons (in a single turn) is done using weapons with the Light property.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Light
If you attack with one Light weapon, you can take a Bonus Action to attack with another.
But you don’t add your ability modifier to the damage of that Bonus Action.
The Two-Weapon Fighting fighting style lets you overcome that last limitation.
It allows you to once again add your ability modifier to that attack, thereby causing more damage than you would otherwise.
Isn't that the same as dual wield?
“Dual wield” isn’t a term used in the rules.
Well…
There is a feat called Dual Wielder.
True
But any character can use the Light BA.
Yo guys can anyone teach me how to play DND because I'm new to it
Welcome! There’s some good info in #learn-to-play that can help you get started, but if you’ve got any specific questions, fire away!
what's a good resource for a newbie dm to get stat blocks for monsters for free? am interested in dm-ing, but i don't want to pay for a book to learn to dm and get basic monster stat blocks just to realize i dont want to do it or that no one is having fun
oh wow, it shows me stuff on the desktop version
i was looking through it this morning on my phone and they all kept redirecting me to the monster's manual and the dm's guide to dnd, which sucked
thanks!
Reddit "Better Monsters"
It's just called 2 wepon in the rules and it's realy useful for alot of classes (and kinda silly for rouges bc it doubles the amount of sneak attack damage while also letting you disingage in some cases )
Two-Weapon Fighting does not double sneak attack damage, nor does it allow free disengages
What you may be thinking of is that TWF allows for more attacks in one turn, thereby giving more chances to proc Sneak Attack if you missed preceding attacks.
Not sure where you’re getting the free disengage though. Disengage is an Action, which level 2+ Rogues can do as a Bonus Action regardless of what weapon they’re holding.
also, when the rule describe a 15 foot cube or a 5 foot cube, does it mean 15 foot originating from the player in all directions in the shape of a cube or a 15 foot length cube total? i.e. is it 15 foot to the left and to the right or 5 foot where the player stands, 5 foot to the left and 5 foot to the right?
In 2014, the PHB lists it out here. In 2024, it's still in the PHB but in the rules glossary (here).
So to answer your question, the point of origin of the cube is anywhere on its surface (so check your range to know where that cube-origin can be in relation to you, the caster).
For the size of the cube, the game expresses the size using the length of one side of the cube. So a 15 ft cube is 15 ft on one side (15 ft by 15 ft). Edit: So your 5 feet to the left and 5 feet to the right is right. That's because that's a total of 15 feet for the length of the side of the cube.
Hope that helps!
cool!
Hello ☺️ . I recently became interested in DnD cause of Baldurs Gate 3. And I wanted to learn how to play the game! I just don't know what to do or where to start? 😆

Can't u trigger sneak attack on any attack that u have advantage on
So if u have a rapper and a dagger u can hit normality with the rapier (which is a sneak attack if an teammate is close enough) and then use the advantage fact that the rapier gives you advantage on your next roll against the person in the same turn to also get a sneak attack with the dagger, after that u can still use your special moove to disingage
Sneak attack can only be triggered once per turn, it's one of its core limitations.
So no matter how many times you attack, it can only be used on one of those attacks.
Oh I didn't know that
Ig it's good it doesn't work like that because it seemed kinda op
indeed
To review Sneak Attack. It shows the core limitation at the beginning of the second sentence.
Notably, the limitation of once per turn does not mean once per round. So a Rogue can Sneak Attack “twice” if they are able to use it on their turn and if they have the ability to attack with their reaction (e.g. opportunity attack)
And as before, using Cunning Action to Disengage as a Bonus Action is independent of dual-wielding weapons. A Rogue can use it regardless of them wielding one shortsword, two daggers, a bow, etc.
Is ascendant dragon monk a good subclass now
Good is subjective
I wouldn’t worry about what’s “good” starting out. What will be good is highly dependent on your preferred playstyle, party composition, build, table, etc. As such, focus on if Ascendant Dragon is fun for you specifically
I see thx
But monk was buffed to have a ton of movement and stuf so I would probably go monk and chose the subclass that goes best with the campaign at lvl 3
