In 2024 rules if you have a Nick weapon such as a scimitar you can actually swing both weapons as part of your action
To answer your final question it is possible to attack 4 times at level 5, but you would need to be dual-wielding light weapons, one of which has to have the Nick mastery property
so if i get the dual wielder feat and attack with short sword using my attack action do i get to attack with the longsword?
i do not know what that mastery is
its a weapon type?
It’ll be described in the Free Rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#MasteryProperties
Nick is a Mastery Property, an extra ability you may have when using a certain weapon, but only if you’ve gotten Mastery in said weapon.
@lost silo mentioned in 2024 rules, if my campaign is being played with 2014 rules is it the same?
It would be different then yes
No the Nick weapon mastery and Nick are 2024 rules only
i guess there is the light weapon thing in the 2014 rules instead of that?
Not exactly the same.
The main differences:
- Mastery Properties would not exist
- Dual Wielder would allow you to use any 2 melee weapons you can wield in one-hand
So before level 5, if you managed to pick up dual-wielder you could attack with your longsword & shortsword in any order you’d like for a total of 2 attacks using your Action and BA. At level 5 it would be a total of 3 attacks.
oh that made it very clear, thank you all for your helps, all of these are a bit complicated and im a little slow but i think ill figure the rest thanks to your helps
@edgy onyx@lost silo@wheat crystal
No problem
hey can somone tell me if my spells are good for my Dragonborn wizard
i have Mage Hand, Exploding Arrow, Acid Spray, Healing Word and Minor Illusion
Very strange assortment you have there. Wizard doesn't have access to Healing Word. And I've never heard of the spell "Exploding Arrow" before, which leads me to believe it's not an official one.
Not to mention, you've got too few of them. At level 1, you pick the following from the Wizard spell list:
- Three Cantrips
- Six 1st level Spells
How did you get access to Healing Word and “Exploding Arrow” as a Wizard?
By Acid Spray I assume you actually mean Acid Splash. In any case as Dosh said you’re missing 6 1st level spells, or 4 1st level spells if your DM allowed you to take Healing Word and the unofficial “Exploding Arrow” spell
i'm new and playing my first on sunday
little bit intimidated..
i lit dunno what to do
anyone have a vid to help for 2 mins?
just to begin

I'd bump that charisma if I were you. 7 is fine for a character that doesn't need it, but as a paladin it's your spellcasting stat.
Did you roll these numbers?
yes
Unless you have a campaign already lined up, it might behoove you to use a standard array for your ability scores.
Indeed. It's very unlikely to find a DM who will accept rolled stats that they didn't see rolled.
there are blank spaces in the equipment section of the sheet named CP, SP, EP, GP and PP. What do they mean and what should i put in these?
Those are your currencies. Copper, silver, Electrum, gold, and platinum pieces. Characters start with some amount of GP from a combination of their class and background.
oh nice, thanks a lot!
I chose low Charisma purposely, so I gave it Acolyte with Wisdom for Magic Initiate. Was hoping to build its Charisma slowly as I run the character but I guess it might be no good
I see.
D&D is not really a game where your ability scores progress all that much. You can get a maximum of +2 to a single stat every 4 levels, and thats if you ignore feats which are powerful character options.
It's gonna hurt you in the long run, and going to be very painful in the immediate.
I like the idea you have here, but unfortunately DnD isn't really built for that kind of stat progression. Let's say you start at 7 with your Charisma. If you use every single opportunity you have to increase just that ability score from levels 1-20, you'll end the game with a Charisma of 16 (which just so happens to be slightly above the minimum I'd recommend starting with at level 1).
I see
would it make better sense to give wisdom and charisma around the same stats, then cap out wisdom at 20 by giving it +2 with ability scores so charisma can grow more?
While Wisdom is a great ability score in general, it's not particularly helpful for a Paladin, specifically. As a Paladin your top most important ability scores are:
Charisma
Strength
Constitution
What Mr. Bones said. Paladins don't use Wisdom in any tangible way, outside of skills.
Having your strength be highest is usually a good move for a pally, since you'll be hitting things a lot. Charisma is your stat for casting, you need it so enemies don't resist your spells.
And no one wants to dump Con.
Just about every other stat is kind of inconsequential for you. You can even more or less ignore Dex, since you'll most likely be wearing heavy armor
You'll catch a lot of flack in some channels for that Dex comment, but I happen to agree with you
Lol they can be mad all they want. Paladins don't need dex
hm, so +1 on wis and +2 on char?
i'm ngl, i'm kinda worried about the 20 scores cap
why get agile paladin when you have over 70 lbs of equipment
My usual spread for paladins that I aim for is:
Str: 16
Dex: 10
Con: 14
Int: 8
Wis: 12
Cha: 14
And that's with the background Ability Score Increases
Why are you worried about the stat cap?
honestly don't know how stat progression works in sessions yet, so I'm kinda wary
Don't be worried about the stat cap. D&D is not a game where you're going to be maxing out all of your stats. A character will hit 20 in both their primary scores if you're lucky. And that's if you roll, and roll really well. Most characters won't even come close.
And, importantly, your character definitely won't since you rolled lower than a standard array.
Every 4 levels you get an Ability Score Improvement, which allows you to increase two ability scores by +1, or one score by +2. Considering that character level is hard capped at 20, that's not many score improvements.
Yeah, it's 5-7 max depending on your class
And you may want to swap some out for feats as well
Exactly.
The aforementioned stat increases only happen if you totally ignore feats, which can be character/build defining choices. You have to choose a feat or an ability score improvement. The feats that do improve your ability scores only give you a single +1.
Character progression in D&D isn't in numbers. It's in features.
Thanks folks, adjusting stuff right now, might need more assistance soon
very big help
should i just leave the allies & organizations part empty if im creating my character right now and he does not have any in his backstory?
Sure. You can work with your DM later if you'd like to add any after you get a better understanding of their setting.
Anyone have experience transferring a FE character sheet app character to roll20?
Fire... Emblem...?
I'm assuming no but also have no idea what it could actually be 🤣
Assume we only discuss D&D here 😉
Its a "free" character maker i was recommended for mobile. Fifth Edition character sheer... yes thats the name. Honestly works well but wants to transfer it to roll20
Folks in #third-party may have more ideas (or even better check Roll20's support channels)
I should of probably roamed the discord a bit before asking this XD
just trying anything to avoid the god awful DnDB prices while keeping what conveniences i can.
Well it's pretty much going to be similar prices across whatever platform you chose to run your D&D on (except physical books - those will be a bit more expensive because of the costs of production and shipping).
Unless you're borrowing a friends book and writing it down on a paper/PDF sheet
I can't think of any reason why WotC would sell their content cheaper on a platform that's not their primary platform.
They do have sales but yeah
"Sales" $79 beginners book down to $59.95
I manually type everything into roll 20
Haven't done it with their new sheets but it's not that hard with the old ones
Especially since I keep my characters as PDFs and can copy paste the features
would love to. but its finding the info i need that can be hard. like i do one thing but not notice it allows me to do all this other stuff
thank you
i am kinda lost choosing spells for my eldritch knight, level 1 spells, i can choose 2 abjuration or evocation spells and one from any school. any recommendations?
Just to confirm, do you have a group already? Most games start at level 1, and you don't gain the benefits of the Eldritch Knight subclass until level 3.
i do have a group, dm decided we start at level 3
But if you're just preparing in advance or practicing, the spells Shield and Absorb Elements are fantastic for EKs.
oh i forgot to mention sorry, i already chose one, earth tremor, for my feat great weapon mastery. i believe it benefits it?
yeah
oh nice. do you mind if i Dm you?
you can
added absorb elements to my sheet, seems great, and for cantrips would you recommend me two please?
I'm not really sure what you mean by this. The spell Earth Tremor and the great Great Weapon Mastery don't interact at all
does it not knock them down or make them go prone if it can hit?
something like that i believe
i just checked if they fail the dex roll it makes them go prone and i believe i have read that attacking prone enemies with Great Weapon Mastery's active attack has a better chance of hitting in some way
Attacking prone enemies in general gives you advantage, which makes landing attacks easier. I don't know if I'd recommend Earth Tremor though, as it has some pretty disappointing damage numbers, and is pretty easy to avoid.
*Prone only make melee attacks against the target be at advantage. Ranged attacks against a prone target are at a disadvantage.
hmmm, i just wanted to benefit from Great Weapon Mastery as much as i can. It wouldn't be worth it you are saying? i could also pick Shield.
thank you for the information, i am planning on attacking close range with melee
In both 2014 and 2024, Great Weapon Master is a great feat for melee martial characters, and specifically in 2024 also for Heavy Crossbow users
we are using 2014 and i plan on using it with a Greatsword
This particular combo is a little lackluster, is what I mean. For example, if you use this spell to knock enemies prone (even if you succeed) you can't do anything else for that turn. Then, when it gets back to their turn... they'll just stand back up. But the time it's back to your turn, you can't benefit from it any more.
huh, considering that it is pretty dumb and pointless, goddamn redditors...
It likely won't matter much if you're not playing at an intensive, hard-core table, but you can look at tabletopbuilds.com if you're really interested in optimizjng your character. Also yeah, never trust Reddit for anything DnD
Now there's obviously some benefit. Your allies might be able to benefit from the prone status on the enemy, for example. Or you can use your Action Surge feature to attack once... but that's only once per short rest.
What matters most is to just have fun with your build, as you'd need to make a very bad build to be unviable at most tables.
All in all, it's probably safer to just attack twice, rather than set up and hope you can attack again.
Oh, never saw that website before on google, i will definitely give it a check, appreciate it. Not making that mistake again with Reddit thank you 😭
Ditto. It's also a good reminder for me to actually read my character sheet rules. 😳
...I also take joy in embedding gifs/images into my sheet macros. So there's that, too.
Correct, my group can benefit or i could with Action Surge but i want something that can benefit me at nearly all times individually.
Then Earth Tremor certainly isn't your best option
Wise words. So Shield would be a better selection, i could use my third spell selection for it too but i do want my character to be more aggressive on a general basis.
Your question before was about Cantrips though. Some good options are a ranged Cantrip that relies on a save like Toll the Dead or Mind Sliver, or a utility Cantrip like Mold Earth, Minor Illusion, or Prestidigitation.
Woah, i love having lot of options usually but with this, i don't knoooow.
I'd recommend you one of the "Bladetrips", like Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade, but only the updated Eldritch Knight from the current rules can make the most out of those
Sadly they have decided to use 2014, what else i could make the most out of?
I'd recommend the ones in this list, then
I will check them one by one and decide then, thanks a ton!
turns out i have been looking at Physical and digital copy's
side note, Do most people use the 2014 or 24 player handbook now
That's difficult to say! I don't think there's one super reliable answer, unfortunately.
Over time, the 2024 rules will certainly begin to become the outstanding norm.
If you want to use this server to find a group there’s #find-a-game . If you want to maximize your chances of getting into a game it’s best to use multiple avenues. For group-finding online you can also try:
- Other TTRPG & DnD discords
- Other TTRPG & DnD social media groups (e.g. Reddit’s r/lfg)
- Other TTRPG & DnD forums (e.g. D&DBeyond forums)
I have a guide full of sites to check out linked in my bio.
Hi! I'm new to D&D. To confirm, this can be played online, right?
Hey Morgan
Hi, Mitcho!
absolutely can be. I run 5 campaigns online and one in person
Oh, wow!! I really want to get into D&D! I've always been a nerd for fantasy 🤣
If you need more info, There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready Follow the easy steps in lfg-instructions-faq and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Ooh, nice! Couple questions. Do you need to pay for this, and is a webcam needed?
Many DM's (story tellers) do charge. finding free groups is possible but harder.
most (i would say) do not require a cam, definitely a mic is usually required
Yeah, microphone is good, yeah.
So when I finish my character, I do what?
You will need to find a group to play in.
Would you guys recommend oneoffs to get returning players and new players upto speed with combat and settling into rp
Want to get into a long campaign but not too confident i remember how to play XD been a year since my last game and even then i was new
I don't understand what you are trying to suggest.
One off sessions. atleast i think thats what they are called
They are called one shots and yep they are a good way to refamiliar yourself with D&D after a hiatus.
But also just jumping into a campaign can be a fun way to learn.
I don’t personally like or do one off’s but that’s me. A person can learn in both one offs and campaigns but us hard to grow when u play one offs
my confidance and "not wanting to screw up a ongoing game" will not allow that XD
2024 rules
ah checks out
Thats definitely an opinion.
I also agree, that is definitely an opinion with merits and flaws
Things have changed so much since 2nd Ed, it's a little intimidating.
I find myself trying to "translate" things into 2nd Ed terms. Fortunately, a lot of the spells and abilities are the same, especially for the Druid class I'm playing.
Hm but yes i might look into one shots.
Any advice?

hi there! i've been trying to find a text based non-PbP dnd game for a while now, but roll20 is drawing a blank for me and reddit is blocked in my country. is there like a discord where i could find games to play? been starved for some dnd action
yeah
Text based and play by post are the same thing, so it's not clear what type of game you're looking for?
not exactly. text-based games can be either live-plays (where players gather during a specified time and play like its a regular voice sessions except with text), or Play-by-post where there is no specific gathering time
So you're looking for a synchronous pbp/text game? Maybe try looking for discord based pbp games
Hello!
I have no clue how the game works but I've seen Sheldon and his gang from TBBT have fun with playing with it. I am so so so curious how it's played so I'm hoping to find people who'd be patient and understanding in teaching me. I am available every day at 7:00 AM CST.
P.S. not a gamer too so please be nice 🙂
huh, didn't know discord had no pinging feature, sorry bout that
the issue with looking for synchronous pbp games is that they are almost always asynchronous, at least from my experience. but it's worth a shot, thanks!

Ok~
You might try putting together a level one character. That'll help point you at the bits of the rules you'll need to know.
To build a character:
- class
- species
- background
Fill in ability scores with the standard array, then apply modifiers as granted. Pick proficiencies, equipment, spells if applicable. It's all in the Basic Rules.
Ok~
Yooo im new

And a bot will likely post the links in a moment lol
Are these the links you are talking about
So how do you guys play like do you hold calls or some s
Online play often involves a few assistance tools. An app to hold VC or another form of communication is one of them
Typically you'd also have:
- A character sheet hoster (e.g. D&DBeyond)
- A dice roller
- A Virtual Tabletop (VTT) (e.g. roll20, Foundry)
Wait you guys offer a character sheet
Typically you'd fill out your own using the official sheet
So like one I have in my hand in my home?
If you have the official template on hand then yeah
However you'd probably want to transfer it digitally for online play. Apps like D&DBeyond host digital character sheets that can be integrated into VTTs (usually via 3rd party plug-ins)
I'd recommend the app, though it may be sligthly easier to set up a character if you went to the site on a computer
As for a digital dice roller, D&DBeyond has one already that can be accessed from your character sheet
Ahh gotcha and what is the rule on like doing anime charct3rs like you could do ichigo?
Yea you could there is no limit
There are limits
you joined as a dm....
Wait what
As defined by the rules of the game
You could make a character by picking class, race, subclass, spells and feats in a way to emulate the character's abilities, or even homebrew a character, but there are still the rules of the game and the DM of the game to consider
You can probably make a rough adaptation of Ichigo, but translating power systems 1:1 between media franchises usually doesn't go well
Yea
Didn't know that
Got it

What does the combat % mean when people host games
Like I see a gamr which says 50 rp and 50 combat
How much of game time will be spent with combat encounters versus exploration versus social encounters
Ohh got it
To use this server to find a group to play with use #find-a-game . Unfortunately it is against server rules to solicit games outside of the lfg channels, and also to post links without context
@brittle idol Welcome! There’s three main ways to determine your ability scores, described below. You should ask your DM which to use.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

You could ask the folks who posted. Alternatively, you could start your own group or expand your search. This server isn't the only place to find games/groups. If you're under 18 and in-person play is an option, some good alternatives include school clubs, game/hobby stores, and public libraries. Tabletop clubs and/or programming are fairly common in those spaces.
so.. looking for a group who is willing to hlp me understand the game.

Hey so like can roleplays be about anything? I forgot what it was called but basically the something-masters they get to decide what the role play is about?
Or is there set story lines
Dungeon Master is what you're thinking of, and they're basically the "referee" of the game, and the one that makes the story
Generally you'd be roleplaying as your characters going through the adventure, so most of it is up to the players and the DM together
Hello, does anyone know about groups around the age of 20-35 that play D&D that may be looking for more players??

Its out of the blue, but how did you get out of metamancing ? Me personally, i only play classes i think are cool. But, i can't resist looking for how to optimize my idea of the build on youtube or watch class guides for what spells works best with it, what weps, what feats... i love trying to make my character as strong as possible, but considering how power gaming is viewed in TTRPGs... yeah. So any advice ?
Sorry for that big paragraph.
No worries, but I think there might be a little term confusion here.
Metagaming is typically used to refer to Roleplaying or making decisions in the game based not on character knowledge, but your own. Such as being angry and suspicious of a character who you as a play know just snuck off and did something that will have consequences later, but your character should have no idea at all that they did that because they were sleeping.
As for optimisation vs powergaming, that is more dependent on your group and how they feel. Optimisation really only becomes 'powergaming', when you start to exploit loopholes, or ignore narrative, or general agreed table level (and outstrip your friends) or generally get too focused on 'winning' or being powerful to the point of potentially lowering the fun for other people. And that will be a different level to each table.
Yeah ig. So that's why ppl say RAW and RAI ?
Hello I'm trying to make a human detective character what class should I choose
one shot
For a human detective vibe, I’d go either Rogue (Inquisitive subclass) for classic investigation and reading people, or Ranger (Gloom Stalker) if you want a darker, stealthier detective who can vanish into the shadows. Depends if you want Sherlock Holmes… or Sherlock if he carried a knife in his boot
RAW means Rules As Written, the rules literally as written in the books. RAI means Rules As Intended and is used when discussing what the game's intended outcome of the rules as written is it may be.
- Focus on safety and comfort first, fun second, everything else third
- You will make mistakes. They will not matter. Keep your eye on moving forward and keeping the tempo
- Avoid feeling the need to prepare absolutely everything. Prepare either the minimum needed to play the next session, the minimum needed to feel ready, or whatever you enjoy, whichever is the least
- Pre made adventures are a great resource, either to use as written or to repurpose
- Don't try and be the best DM ever, just try and be the best DM for your players
- Clear, honest, and kind communication is the best tool and solves most problems
- Say "yes" when you can, but there's nothing wrong with saying "No"
Thank you, I went for a simple rogue
If you forget a rule mid-session or can’t find it quickly, make a quick ruling and move on. Nothing kills immersion faster.
Make failure interesting. When players mess up (and they will) don’t just consequence/punish - twist the story, make it fun - failure should move the narrative forward.
Remember to spotlight everyone. You’ll sometimes naturally get players who dominate the play more, just remember to spot this and steer the “light” towards other players too
I feel like City Watch might be the most fitting, with the Variant option of Investigator.
Alternatively, you can take the Investigator background from Van Richten's.
Both of these background's features provide you with a good way to interact with the world!
does magic stone allow you to throw the pebbles as part of the bonus action or do you have to expend an action to throw it
You only embue the stones with magic. The throwing the stones as an action comes later
Just using the free rules, any can fit. Maybe they spent time in cloistered study before taking up the spyglass. Perhaps they use their previous criminal history to now investigate crimes.
Go with the one that gives you the tools you need. You can always work the rest out to fit.
Hello, I am new here, if I have a question, like build advice, where could I ask in this server?
#character-discussion is the right place!
My thanks
how many spell slots total do i have as arti 1/ wizard 1?
also how many cantrips would i be able to prepare
Read the information in multiclassing as it explains how it works: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Multiclassing
ive read this already its confusing
are you able to answer my example so i can understand better
It's also why we don't recommend multiclassing to new D&D players
Spell Slots. You determine your available spell slots by adding together the following:
- All your levels in the Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, and Wizard classes
- Half your levels (round up) in the Paladin and Ranger classes
- One third of your Fighter or Rogue levels (round down) if you have the Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster subclass.
You determine what spells you can prepare for each class individually, as if you were a single-classed member of that class (refer to the class table that)
So you would be able to prepare all the spells for an artificer 1, and all the spells of a wizard 1.
But you'd only have the slots available as listed here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#MulticlassSpellcasterSpellSlotsperSpellLevel
So at level 1 wizard and level 1 artificer you are considered a level 2 character and have 3 slots available for 1st level spells.
okay thank you
a bit of a barebone answer but what is the first thing i should do as a new player? I've seen people play dnd through youtube and twitch bit i have no clue what to actual do
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Read/skim through the free rules to get an idea of the game mechanics.
Maybe try your hand at making a character so you can understand the process and see how some of the game features work.
Watch folks play D&D so you can see the game mechanics/rules in action (but note that many streams are entertainment first and less about teaching the rules).
Then go find a group to play with!

ah, thanks guys, i'll try to take things slow and start with making a character first
if im bringing a 2014 subclass that isnt in 2024 is the standard rule to get the subclass at level 2 or 3?
Hey guys! looking to play in a campaign. Anyone open to having a new player?
Check out #find-a-game
Essentially, yes. The 2024 classes each have a version of the following wording at level 3:
For the rest of your career, you gain each of your subclass’s features that are of your [Class] level or lower.
This makes them compatible with 2014 subclasses.
sorry this is kind of confusing to me do you mind explaining in more detail
when making a character, what dnd sheets/Sites would be best to use?
You’d get the subclass at level 3.
Any features the subclass would have offered at levels 1-2, you also get at 3 instead.
And after level 3, you get them at the same level you'd have gotten them in the 2014 version of the rules.
ok thanks
I like using D&D Beyond, which is the official site.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Ooooo thanks thanks dude
is there any like Warhammer 40k dnd communities
Warhammer 40k is not D&D, they're different TTRPGs
They'd likely have their own official discord you can find, or if not an official one, a popular one at the very least
I see i see, btw what items should I have as a halfling rouge?
any idea where to find them
Why is D&D so confusing and hard to play / find someone to play 🙏🙏🙏
Any tips to what to actually do to be ready?
Edit: “.” In wrong place
It can be a little confusing to start due to how many rules there are, but most of them are something you can check when needed, and not something you need to learn inside out
As for finding people to play with, it's due to there being so many more players than DMs, so a Dungeon Master is gonna have easy time getting players, while for players it can be difficult to find a game
So I have the newest player handbook and I don't see a school of necromancy subclass for wizard is there one
There was back in 2014. Would be surprised if it wasn’t one of the first to be updated for 2024.
More players need to be willing to DM, Ngl.
Thanks
Yeah it's definitely a fun role, though understandably a potentially intimidating one to start with
I have done it, I have my my rouge using dnd beyond, problem is I don't know if i did it right..
If you’d like feedback on your character sheet feel free to post the share link here or in #character-discussion !
Nice! Thanks dude!
Hi! Any suggestions on how to join new campaigns in NYC in person? Or if there’s a channel for this? My boyfriend and I are looking to join one, we both have beginner experience
Tbh if you're looking to join irl games for anything I'd check if your local game stores have a Facebook or discord, join those groups, and poke around in there. Ime as long as they have a Facebook or discord or similar thing for their store you can find people to play games with through there.
tysm!
No problem, happy hunting.
Thanks!
Hello!
I’ve never played dnd and have wanted to delve into it for a while, I’ve got a starter set but have recently moved and no one to play with so I hoped to join this server and learn
Welcome!
#dm-discussion would be the place to ask!
Thank you
Would anyone be happy to help me and my partner learn dnd for the first time and potentially help us find a game
It's not super likely to find someone willing to walk strangers through the game. It's a big ask considering we have new people joining every day! But you should check out the links the bot will bring up and ask questions as you proceed through those resources.

More than understandable and get why it’s a big ask, thank you for the reply either way:)
Hey guys! Should / Do I have to buy something to play the game? A couple stores around me host games but I didn’t ask for extra info and I’m wondering now
I also see on the website they recommend to buy the book player’s handbook, should I get it?
You can get started with the free Basic Rules.
If you want more character options, the full PHB is a fun addition.
If you’re playing in person, you’ll maybe want to pick up a dice set. You can get a usable set for ~$10.
But depending on the group, they may allow digital dice on your phone, which you could use for free.
Yeah, that should be plenty to get you started.
D&D’s the kind of hobby where you can spend as much or as little as you want and still have fun.
And yeah, you will need a character sheet, but that doesn’t cost anything either.
Alright, thanks a lot guys
hello people
yo
not new to dnd new to server
how viable is it joining games here? is it something that isnt too hard?
rare I mean
I only have a bi weekly dnd campaign myself, so I want more, are the games listed in the lfg forums only up as long as there are free spaces? or do they stay after they have filled up?
gonna ask in discussion, thx forhte answers
Ads stay up for a week regardless of being filled unless the DM manual removes it
Read through #find-a-game and follow those steps to find DMs

Hi, I'm new to DND. I never played or was even allowed to look into it growing up. I was always fascinated by hearing those around me talk about their missions, but it wasn't allowed in my parents' homes. I'm now on my own, and want to get into a hobby/interest I've never done before. I've spent the last week really digging into the rules, equipment, rule exceptions, DND masters vs. players, etc, Really anything I could think of, and I'm just trying to find someone(s) to teach me, as to be honest, it's all a little confusing if 1. you've never played before, and 2. if you've never seen it played. I've watched some videos of DND campaigns, and now I feel like I'm ready to start playing myself. I will say, the creating a character part. I'm at a loss. Once past help with that, I feel like I could understand and function well enough to work through it with someone who's willing to answer questions as we go along. Basically, I need a group, help with the character sheet, as everywhere says to ask the dungeon master before making one anyway, and help along the way? I don't have any equipment purchased, but I have looked at free online dice rollers and free rule guides. I'm working and doing school in the afternoons, so I'm a little set for time, but my weekends are usually free. I've looked at the DND beyond character creator, but again, I don't know the rules set by the dungeon master as I'm not playing yet. I'm not sure if this is where I post this, but the other server parts don't really make sense for it. Thank you in advance to all.
follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for. There maybe someone to help. It is extensive to teach someone so it may be a bit of a struggle if i am being honest.
Hey quys quick question where can i find people to play dnd with on here?
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
Happy to help with any questions!
Don’t take this the wrk g way you’ll have a harder time to find a group became most online group are 18+ for a multitude of reasons. Try your local libraries or see if your school has a d&d club if not make one!
.
#find-a-game is where to find games #looking-for-players is for gms advertising games your best bet, #looking-for-dm is you advertising to any DMs not as Lilly but feasible
I'm making a fighter class character and I noticed in the starting gear you get both a longbow and cross bow. Does it matter if I swap out the longbow for something else?
dang, that sucks, my main reason for playing online is that I live about 30 minutes from the nearest town and I'm homeschooled so there's not too many people that I can actually play with, I'll just have to convince my friends to play and convice one of them to dm lol
hey folks just thinking about getting the 2024 rulebooks and monster manual but trying to find out the best place to get them and whether I can get hardcovers
gotta find a pretty penny or find a good retailer though lol
Or a long bow you can’t pick bolth
I need to homebrew a salami build or possible feats
Your lfgs will have the books if a avalible
Local friendly game shop
I have the 2014 rulebook should that be enough for now?
player handbook specifically
also where's a good place to start with lore? it's a bit much, and I can only pick out a few things about realm layouts
Oh sorry I asked that weirdly. I'm picking the cross bow, so I don't want the longbow. And the fighters starting equipment comes with leather armor, longbow, and 20 arrows. I want the leather armor, but not the longbow, So can I replace the longbow and arrows for something else?
Those are part of the choices, you can choose the armor and two martial weapons I beleave
Chain Mail
or
(B) Leather Armor, Longbow, and 20 Arrows
(A) A martial weapon and a shield
or
(B) Two martial weapons
(A) A light crossbow and 20 bolts
or
(B) Two handaxes
(A) A dungeoneer's pack
or
(B) An explorer's pack
These are the starting choices
You can always ask your dm about it
But you also can choose between two martial as well, if you start with b you can always sell the bow and arrows
hi! ive never played dnd, but i recently watched vox machina and thought it would be cool to make a character. i started drawing some doodles for an ideai had, but idk what class it would even fit into or how to start playing with it. any help at all would be awesome!

Bot post go!
The bot above has a link to the free basic rules that’s the best place to start is by reading ch1-2
Then what ever class you feel for
Hello, I'm Ava. I just got on discord a few days ago since a friend told me about this server. I've never played DND before but I do enjoy writing so I thought I would like it. How might I start?
#learn-to-play is a good place to start 👌
Alright, thankyou.
I saw this on rpgbot
Light Crossbow: A light crossbow combined with True Strike will deal more damage than Fire Bolt until you reach level 11, making it the Wizard’s go-to attack option at least until level 11. can someone explain why this does more damage than firebolt my understanding is firebolt is 1d10 and light crossbow is 1d8
1d8+spellcasting modifier
The TS crossbow's damage adds your modifier, while firebolt don't add your spellcasting modifier (unless you have a feature that does). This means that a light crossbow's average damage will be higher until firebolt's scaling outpaces true strike
ah i see thanks, however i have a shield so im not free on both hands should i try to make ts crossbow work or just use firebolt?
If you're dead set on using a shield, you can't use a crossbow without Crossbow Expert (edit: and it would have to be a hand crossbow. Derp.)
So the real question is whether the +2 AC is worth the slight drop in damage. But then, you probably have other spells, right?
So my party and me are newer to playing dnd but I hyper focus on things and try to learn everything I can from it and my party currently consists of a ranger, fighter, rogue who might change to a monk then me a Druid then 3 of the same subclass sorcerers which are draconic and the only difference between them is race and choice of spell (some of which are similar) and I need to convince my dm and the other two sorcerers to change subclasses ( we don’t talk about them much) one sorcerer just wants fire magic. and the other to just use the most powerful spells he is able to use. How do I try and fix this. The third one is the first one in our party to be a sorcerer so he stays draconic.
I guess depends on situation
Do you also know if using true strike this way will still allow me to benefit from the light weapon properties?
Light crossbows do not have the light property. Hand crossbows do. Plus light crossbows are two-handed weapons (I admit I spaced on that part, so they can't be used with shields anyway)
Also, true strike is an action, meaning it is not possible to dual wield with it, even if they were.
So, double no.
I need to convince my dm and the other two sorcerers to change subclasses...
Why? If the players are having fun then what do you think the problem is?
Fix what, exactly?
I feel like the real question is why wasn't this hashed out in session zero? Having three characters with the same class and subclass just shouts lack of communication to me.
But if there was a session zero and they did communicate, you might be the only one that sees a problem.
Yeah, D&D is not a video game. There's no raid composition you need to have to succeed.
Nothing wrong with multiple people having the same subclass. You have a larger group, so long each has different elements nothing wrong.
Having a good mix of classes is good, you have three spell casters and 4/5 melee with mixed classes as well. Your fine
If everyone at the table wants to play a fighter and join together in a shield wall or cavalry charge then good for them! (They'll get some encounters where that works amazingly well and some where it is an obviously bad idea and they'll need to adapt to succeed.)
heyy, I was wondering how I could first make my own main character I could use for all my playthroughs
#learn-to-play has some good links to free rules which include character creation, and Dndbeyond has a character creator you can play around with
Though do keep in mind, you're unlikely to be able to play the same character from game to game, or at least with any of the progress, levels or items etc. Generally DMs will only sllow characters made for their specific campaign
Thats fair. I just have an OC I really want to start exploring more, and I thought this could be a nice place to start in
I will also say that some people might not vibe with you using the same character every single time a new game happens. Especially if you do it a lot.
Also I'm unsure if you're aware of this, but proper campaigns can last months at the very least.
(Psst: this just in, True Strike no longer terrible https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2619204-true-strike)
Louder for everyone in the back 🙏
Oh trust me. I know, lol
How do people play dnd online what website do they use
So all you need to play D&D online is some way to communicate; discord, slack, zoom, teams, etc
Everything else is just tools to make things easier or flashier
Like a dice roller tool
If you want to be able to share your sheets, maybe you use something like D&D Beyond
If you want to be able to share your dice rolls, you might use Avrae
If you want a map with tokens that everyone can see, you might use roll20 or Foundry
I personally use D&D Beyond for all three; it has character sheets than can be shared, a game log that shares dice rolls, and Maps VTT that integrates everything together
Okay thank you 😀
No worries
Hi. First time trying to play DnD. Any suggestions how to do that?

im trying to make a character on dnd beyond but can only make life cleric not death cleric or forge cleric
Life cleric is the only subclass in the free rules
ah so i have to buy
Yeah, or have it shared to you by someone in your campaign that owns the Player's Handbook and has a Master Subscription.
okay thankyou
Generally speaking the way channels work here is if people are interested in a topic such as character discussion, they'll already be in that channel discussing it. You don't need to go poking other channels for people to move over to another channel
Good morning!
Uh how should I start this? First of all I‘m Jini, I am an absolutely cat lover, got 3 babies of my own here :D‘
I wasn’t really familiar with DnD until I played Bg3.
And well yea, it did it’s magic on me!🙈.
I would have a few general questions since I’m totally new to all of this, is the stuff on paper similar to the game mechanics of bg3? Please don’t be annoyed, it‘ll help me to understand stuff better😅.
Can you even play as a newbie? Are people annoyed? Is it realistic for me to also join maybe parties?
I tried finding local DnD groups but I only found one that doesn’t accept new players and costs money 😵💫.
- BG3 is based on the current edition of D&D, but is far enough removed from it that I wouldn't use it as a learning tool for playing D&D
- Yes, you can totally play as a newbie, otherwise how would anyone get started?

2a. For getting started, check out #learn-to-play and also the D&D Beyond Basic Rules - Very realistic to join a group, or even take up the mantle of DM and start running your own game
3a. You can find games on this server, by going to #find-a-game and following the instructions there
Also worth checking out the server #rules and the #channel-guide
Ohhh awesome! Thank you a lot I’m really excited now 🙈.
Gotta check the channels out ^^
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
does this link not work for everybody? :0
works fine for me
Oh… I get an error message, maybe because I’m not located in America?
RuntimeError: Out of bounds memory access (evaluating '(_main=Module["_main"]=Module["asm"]["_g"]).apply(null,arguments)')
<?>.wasm-
Stuff like that oh mennn well gotta find a way somehow
You don't need to use that part of the site, it's just an interactive intro to a slice of what D&D is kinda like
(that's also a hardware issue you're having)
Oh okayyy im on my phone right now , good to know. Thanks 😅
Some magic items can only be used if you attune to them. As a general rule, a character can only be attuned to 3 magic items at once.
Here are the rules for that:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Attunement
Valid, it’s basically becoming magically connected to the item to unlock its full potential
More specifically, it's a limit on how many items (3) of a certain type (those that require attunement) you can use at any one time
And also how quickly you can switch between those items, the process of becoming attuned takes an hour by default
how does ritual adept for wizard work? since it doenst take a spellslot can i just keep casting that spell infinite times?
I mean, yes sorta?
Ritual spells take longer to cast than casting them normally so you're limited on how many rituals you could perform in a day
Emm with some friends we are playing a League of Legends theme campaing and the DM let me made a custom character (two angel sisters), is it ok to start learning this world or should i try to play a normal theme campaing?
If that’s how your group wants to play, have fun!
Over time the first sorcerer was doing well so the second one wanted to do the exact same then the third joined late and just wants fire, that’s all he wants. I feel like there is not enough diversity in our team
How do I transfer character sheets from the PC website to the mobile website in DND beyond
I have the same account but my characters won't transfer
They are doing the exact same thing on player one sorcerer turn he moves 10 feet casts fire bolt then moves back 10 feet
2nd sorcerer moves away some feet then casts fire bolt or magic missile i don’t remember
3rd moves to the enemy and casts flame blade( surprised he did not use fire-bolt) and uses to kill the enemy. So it’s just some repeating in the party it’s not the end of the world but gets a little boring.
It should be automatic, you'll need to double check it actually is the same account (I'd recommend logging out and back in again)
If that doesn't fix it, you should ask in #ddb-support
Thank you that worked! I can access everything on my phone too :)
Sorry >_>
S'all good, just a heads up on how to turn off pings
Hello
I've been playing as Dm with my school but don't play much.
How do I guide my party towards the objective more?
make some Npcs talk about ur objective more but not to the point it comes off as railroady, u want to give them agency in their choices and nudge them into the direction of the plot but u shouldnt just "whoosh ur here now"
Ok thanks 😊
Yeah, you need to talk to your table. They may not have a problem at all. Its fine for you to want more exciting combat but it really doesn't seem fair to demand other people change the characters they are playing just because you feel bored.
Make the objective something that spites an NPC they don’t like. Players love to be petty.
Hello?
Welcome!
Are there any other ways to find dms and players to play other than the #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players channel
I have tried and failed to find in both channels
And it's especially difficult to find one shots
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Greatly appreciated
I made a guide for exactly that purpose: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?usp=sharing
Thank you
Yeah that’s true but imagine 3 SORCERERS if all of us don’t get a ring of fire immunity me and the other members are screwed
One fire ball is enough to cause massive havoc but THREE THEY ARE GOING TO TPK US
Talk about that risk as a group of players before the game. It's meant to be fun for everyone.
Hi I'm new to DND

They can just not fireball the party. I know that's hard to resist at times.
And it would be fine if they are all the same class but different subclass of All THREE ARE THE SAME AND THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS ON IS A TEIFLING AND THE OTHER TWO ARE HUMAN.
My friends do something nice… really they chose sorcerer for a reason
Hyper new to DND and a 7 person party is probably part of why it's boring as well.
Is this in person or online?
Is there a reason why some people don't like to play with teens aged 15 to 16
Aka me
Cos they're the wrong side of 30 and it'd be weird
Will someone teach me how to paly
Makes sense but I still have had no luck finding games that aren't 18 +
Person
I’m thinking of making my first character a cleric
Cleric is a fun class. Very customizable to whatever playstyle you prefer
I like the look of death cleric I’ve been using it in baldur gate 3

What classes work well with the hobgoblin race
Barbarian
Most classes work fine with just about any species.
This is true lol. My brain assumed the question was getting at which class would be the best. But yes all races can work with almost any class when talking about 5e

Hello everyone. Long time player, just not used to the new rules yet, haven't played since 3.5. wondering if there's a channel just for learning how to navigate D&D Beyond, and Discord? Don't want to hold everyone up while learning the mechanics.
Hey there! Welcome to the server! There's a few articles on DnDBeyond that explain how to use it (as well as YouTube videos). You might also like to check the pinned messages here in this channel (see the 📌 icon in your Discord app).
We don't really provide Discord support but if you have questions about Discord you can ask in #non-dnd-topics as that's where folks can ask Not D&D stuff.
Here's an article explaining the various tools DnDBeyond has to help folks play D&D: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/754-how-to-play-dungeons-dragons-using-d-d-beyond?srsltid=AfmBOoqmwdUcIEwltjYSnGL3mc9pRQnQenO6PLhjc1e1ukJyVxvzkgtI

Welcome
If you know 3.5 leaning 5 e will be easy mostly it’s allot of rebalancing and some different mechanics
Discord that’s a different thing
i’ve been applying to different campaigns and some have been asking for brief character descriptions such as race/species & class. as a new player, is there any combinations i should avoid for being too overpowered or complicated?
Anything the gm asks you not to play/use other wise your fine
okay, thank you!!! (:
There isn’t really an overpowered build unless your min maxing. There is a kinda exception with Gnolls from exploring Everron they are op. I love it (note I’m the gm of a game with a gnoll player lol)
Hi im new here and im looking for somebody that can teach me how to play and become a DM
Hey y'all I'm so completely new. Could like someone help me to understand absolutely anything 😭 I mean I've seen a couple of episodes from critical role but that's it
#learn-to-play is a good place to start!
And if you've got any specific questions, people will be happy to a answer here 😎
Is any DM interested to start a dnd game with new players
Actually playing will be a great way to learn
Hello
Actually
Like I understand the concept and stuff of how dnd works. People are so knowledgeable about dnd here it confuses me
Well, the basic rules are completely free, either on DDBeyond or in pdf format. Never too late to dive in and start learning:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/SRD_CC_v5.2.pdf
Agreed
I feel like I know how the system works and all but until you play you don’t really know how it works
This server has dedicated channels for group finding. Check out #find-a-game for general info on how it works. If you're looking for a DM, #looking-for-dm would be the right one.
okay so me and my 2 friends are going to start a campaign, ive never done a SMALL group and while i myself am not new, its been AGES since ive done any dnd stuff
he says hes gonna do a rogue, and i wanna try and shore up our weaknesses while not being something super boring
i was leaning to something like a sorlock for utility and front line fighting
but idk about healing and stuff
I wanna be part of the campaign
Hello
How does the server work here?
Make sure to use #find-a-game to solicit a game
Could you specify what you mean?
How do you join a campaign and are there any rooms for rules?
D&D doesn't really have traditional "roles" like Healer, Tank, DPS which can be found in MMOs and similar systems. You generally won't need a dedicated healer for multiple reasons (above this channel topic, but to summarize most of your healing will be done w/ Short & Long Rests which are available to every character)
On the topic of Sorlock, it is generally not a frontline fighter. Aside from that we generally don't recommend multiclassing to newbies since it tends to be fairly complex and easy to mess up
Please don't solicit here. That's what the lfg channels are for, as has been pointed out to you.
what would pair well with a hexblade? warlock is by far my most familiar class
This server doesn't host games itself, but we do have a groupfinder with the intructions found in #find-a-game
As for rules, they can be found in #learn-to-play or this channel's pins. I recommend making a practice character as you go along, and of course we're always happy to help answer any specific questions :)
If you're comfortable with the multiclassing rules then usually Hexblade multiclasses well with Paladin. You can add on Sorcerer as well but that's more of a topic for #character-discussion
im willing to try a 1x multiclass, but ill leave 2 for later down the line if i do
ty ❤️
Okay thanks for your help
Warlock with sorceler is for me the best multiclass
Hi @lyric tulip , you could do with checking out #find-a-game for help posting your game!
What is the difference between something like a dirty 20 and a Nat 20, I watched a few live games where they said this
And can your rolls go over 20 or is that the limit
Nat 20 = you rolled 20 on the die, aka the maximum possible result from a d20
Dirty 20 = you rolled <20, but your bonuses added to the total to make it 20 (e.g. 16 + 4 = 20)
And yes your roll total can go over 20 due to your modifiers
Ok what happens then like isn't 20 a crit
For an attack roll, yes.
A natural 20 is a critical hit on attack rolls. The attack automatically hits regardless of AC and you’d roll twice the number of damage dice
The attack automatically hits regardless of the target’s AC, and you roll the damage dice twice.
A nat 20 on a death saving throw also gives you 1hp and gets you back in the fight.
It doesn’t do anything special for any other saving throws, or for ability checks.
And if it goes over 20
It’s just a normal roll if your total is over 20. A “nat 20” only cares if the d20 itself rolled 20.
You can't go over 20 on a natural 20 because a natural 20 is rolling a 20 on a 20-sided dice
A result higher than 20 (the dice roll + any modifiers) is just the result of the roll and what happens depends on the number you're rolling against
It just means you have a high likelihood of success.
So if you rolled 19 + 6 for a total of 25 with a longbow against a Knight with 24 AC you’d hit them as normal (1d8 + Dex)
If you instead rolled a 20 + 6 for a total of 26 (critical) you’d do 2d8+Dex
What if you landed 20 and as a result you got 26 (20 +6)
That is my latter example
If you roll a 20 (for an attack roll), the modifier is meaningless.
Assuming it's an attack roll, that'd hit regardless of what you add to it, as that's a critical hit
You’ve already hit.
Ok 👌 thanks
Hey guys, where can I promote my campaign for selling? On which channel I mean if that is possible here?
#dnd-advertisements. Be sure to follow the server #rules.
do i need a good laptop to use dnd beyond? mine is abit slow
I've had issues with the dice roller graphics slowing down the results on an older laptop, but I believe you can turn those off.
Otherwise, I don't think the demands of the website are too high.
Okay cool thank you
Can I send an invite to a friend to this server if I want
Yup! It's a public server! If you look, you can also see it has a fun lil' custom join code: /dnd.
You want to invite your friend to the dnd discord?
hey everyone, been thinking about getting into DM'ing again for 3.5 got a lot to learn would love to chat with other DMs
#dnd-elder-editions would be the best place to ask if you're looking to DM for 3.5e
This channel skews towards newcomers starting with the current edition
hi
Howdy
i'm new never played a campaign but to be fair i don't think i would want do
i just don't wanne kill dragons i love dragons too much that i don't wanne kill them
Campaigns don't have to be about killing dragons.
i once had a campagian that included saving a dragon egg that they went on to raise as a pet dosent have to be abouut slaying
i like saving and rescueing dragons are making friendship with them yours sound like me kind of campaign
maybe youll be in one of my adventures sometime, relearning Dm role as of now
i say crometic dragon doens't necesarly mean they need to be evil even tough they are alligned that way
could be more so evil that needs to be unlearned or a tendency to snap if too stressed
i like coming with stories of my own with good freindly dragons not realy based on DND lore or stuff just own thing i like to keep to myself i find gold hoarding kidnapping and stuff for dragon too much of a stereo type
sorry i(m bieng a idiot aren't i?
Hello I’m very new and I was wondering if there was a standard character sheet to use because there are a lot of different results when googling it
not at all sorry for not responding, going about my day off screen
I downloaded a character sheet from the dungeon and dragon beyond site
Ok I will look if I find that
Here's the 2024 character sheet: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Thx
Do I find the infos to fill it on the website?
Follow the instructions in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Ok thx
It says talk to your dm so when do I need to make it ? Do I need a team first?
hello, friends. what's the best place to start learning the game? i've seen some beginner rulebooks, but all of this still seems very intimidating and complex. is watching people play gonna help out with that?
If you don't have a DM, you are essentially making a character for practice, to learn how to do it. That's valuable learning, but don't expect to use the character as is!
Ok so I make a practice character and then when I have a dm I talk to him to make changes if needed?
That's a solid plan!
Should I like print it out or just save it on a pc or sum?
Doesn't matter until you know how the group you join plays.
Ok I will do that thx for the help
Is the way you do the stats like wisdom and strength different with each dm
Yep. Some will use point-buy, some will allow rolling, some will tell you to use the standard array. And some use other methods still!
Okay thanks
There is no single best way. Watching folks play can help, but a lot of those shows are entertainment rather than instructional.
- You could play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
The numbers themselves aren't as important as which are higher and lower. Start off with the standard array.
There's three official methods, described below.
Some DMs might use a variation of those methods, like letting you reroll 1's in Random Generation, or giving you extra points for Point Cost.
thanks, mate
But I think you're unlikely to find a DM who uses something wholly different from those three options.
Thank you 🙏
Hello im new to dnd this is my first caracter concept\ backstory looking for feedback
A small Autognome rotund and made of rusted brass with faintly glowing clockwork eyes and with a vents on his neck with a faint glow coming of them,
Is waken by the cold rain in an unknown place to him sparks come of his damaged body as he realizes that he has been left on a pile of trash his creator no whre to be found whith a fragmented memory he wanders the city aimless and afrraid, there he encountes a ragged goblin that whith a switff blow from a pipe shuts him down
as he wakes he realized that he is traped on cage next to ragged tiefligs gnomes and others bests on a caravan there he bonds with gema on their entrpment weeks ? years ? passes, he is sold to another caravan separated from his only companion.
One day as the endless road goes on and on a group of wild man that atacck the caravan they use plant magic and their fiercy battle axes to destroy his new "owners" now lost decides to follow the wild men that see him as a wierd being slowly he stars to bond and learns from th tribe how to be a figther and channel his rage .
Now as he learnes he earnes his tribal paing he takes the same endless road in look Gema and his creator for ansers and beat the gears out of him
#character-discussion is the better channel! This one is for the fundamentals of the game.
thx
Hey i have what is probly a really dumb question when it says, bite:melee weapon atteack:+5 to hit what the +5 means?
That's the number you add to the d20 to determine if you hit.
Thx👍
Could someone give me advice on optimizing an oath of vengeance paladin build for 5e?
Thanks my b!
Since I’m making a character based off Shang-Chi, fighter type. What three weapon mastery might be similar to the 10 rings?
cool
The only thing I can think of is a whip, and that's not even all that close.
Maybe choose whip, quarterstaff, and some kind of sword? I'm not sure. A well written magic item would do a lot of the heavy lifting
I would be tempted to roll up an elements monk. The attacks with reach and elemental damage can be flavored in a ten rings way
Alright, thanks
Another option might be to get most of those effects from battle master maneuvers which can give you a reach attack, push, block, or trip.
For the weapons themselves maybe you mechanically wield a flail and warhammer to deal bludgeoning damage like a solid ring might and ask your DM if you can flavor them as being chi sau or other martial arts ring weights.
Oh thanks, also when making the characters is it better to do it online or paper, for the species types.
I think that's totally up to you and what you prefer. Online eliminates a lot of possible errors, paper help you understand where all the numbers actually come from and what could change them.
So would it be useful if I get the rules from online as I use the paper to write down my character?
You can refer to the online basic rules as you make your character sheet: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
i have a lot of questions

what would be the easier class(es) for starters?
Does the free online version work?
Yes it's the official basic rules - DnDBeyond is an official digital toolset to help with playing D&D (it's owned by Wizards of the Coast/D&D)
Alright
Fighter, rogues, or barbarian might work well - you don't typically have to worry about spellcasting and managing spells.
first of all, what’s easier, being a DM or player?
second, what’s the purpose of the fancy dice like d20s and such.
third, what do i need to play this game irl? anything (other than dice, i’d think.) i need to purchase?
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

Start with the free basic rules above.
Being a player is typically easier than a DM (DMs have to kind of keep the whole show running and decide what rules are in effect and what dice rolles are needed).
The D20 is the primary dice and is used for attack rolls, skill checks, and saving throws (known as D20 Tests).
The other dice (D12, D100/D10, D8, D6, D4) are typically used for damage rolls.
If you like the game well enough then you can consider investing in books like the Players Handbook (PHB) which provides more character options.
The above post
Being a player is easier since all you need to worry about is your actions and rolls.
DMs needs to control npcs and monsters and have a better grip on the rules and know hot to comvay a story
Looking for DnD game. What channel do I go to?
Hello I'm new to dnd!
Please check #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
Ty
Hello I am fairly new-ish as well. I tried one or two games in the past but they didn't last long. One was basically a one shot at a comic con a few weeks ago.
Hey guys so i'm a new dm and wondering if there's a good one shot for my first ever session. and also i still haven't finish the dungeon master's guide book, should i finish it first before starting a session?
Hello! I'm new to the server, looking for people to play with ❤️
Thank you ❤️
Hello i dont know too much about the game but i would like you to start, can you pls give me some advises? i am in plans to buy a set any recommendation? should i buy one to start with you?
I’m new also the advice I give is to watch some episodes of people play dnd online that helped me learn the rules etc
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to help you get started.
Thank you i will check it out, have you played already here? it is common find Dnd campaing here?
The Player’s Handbook or a starter set like Dragons of Stormwreck Isle might be a good first purchase.
There are some great links in the pins on this channel. Then when you’re ready, follow the easy steps in #find-a-game and you’ll have full access to look for games and to post what you are looking for.
say i want to be a DM but also want to create a character. would i just be out of luck, or could i add them as an NPC?
You can but the idea of adding a DMPC (DM player character) to a party is controversial to some because it can be easy to mess that up. DMPCs aren't inherently bad though.
maybe once im a more experienced DM. for my first time im gonna try to keep things as by the book as i could without making it boring
thanks btw
Also know that finding a group of players is hard by default. It takes a lot of time and patience to find a stable DnD group that you get along with.
As a player. DMs have it easier.
i sure hope so
if you wouldnt mind, could you tell me what makes an interesting campaign in your opinion, if anything in particular?
Each person has their own preferences. I'm not sure if I can give you an objective answer.
i want to join a campaign so bad but the closest dnd thing ive ever done is bg3😭
i get you, man. closest thing ive ever done to dnd is monopoly 😂
LOLL so real
I'd maybe say this:
- Don't be afraid to be firm and step your foot down when you have to. In a way the role of DM is kind of a leadership role.
- Make sure your players want to do the same thing as you and everyone else. Some people like silliness and combat while others like roleplay and reasonable seriousness.
There might be a few other things but that's the stuff that is at the top of my head.
would it be better to start of as a DM with experienced players or new players as myself?
super helpful, thank you again
In my opinion, experienced
i figured
There's no right answer.
New players can be kind of chaotic because they just want to do anything
But experienced players might overwhelm you with stuff like "I use major image and presdigation to create an illusion, do the enemies fall for it?"
if you ever go lookin' for players, i'd be down! we can learn the ropes together lol
Like alley ham said, there's no right or wrong answer, just preference
actually that sounds great
But that's what I was talking about earlier. You have to be firm and know when to put your foot down. As a DM you get the huge benefit of picking and choosing your players. It's pretty much like a royal prince getting to choose his spouse.
first time ive ever been to a discord server to ask questions on something and i was actually given helpful advice from people that werent rude
thank you alley ham and nickmuch
Except you even get to divorce your spouse if she sucks.
LOLL
awesome!!
i've sent you a friend request
i accepted it!
No disrespect to women before anything else misinterprets my words. I'm all for healthy marriages. Unless we are talking about my Genie warlock.
The new DMG has useful advice, but you don’t need to read it cover to cover to run a game.
As for single-session beginner-friendly adventures, check out: The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff.
what's everyone's idea for their first character
I would love to talk about my first character however I fear the mods would want us to move to #dnd-discussion.
yeah good point
Mine was so bare bones that there's really nothing to talk about, lmao
Rn I have hot plate of food in front me so I'll answer later.
if i buy a book on dnd beyond does it transfer to other sites like roll 20
It does not
It’s a popular choice, since it’s the official site.
DMs can share their books with their campaigns on dndbeyond so you don't necessarily need to have every person at the table buy a copy.
Hey guys, I'm new to dnd and I'm struggeling with creating my character
Same
Use dnd beyond
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
And do you know what's making you confused
I did and created the character but I don't know why I got those results
well I'm a dragonborn barbarian
that was the things I chose but after that it asked about rolling the dice or the standard array so I chose the dice and got some pretty good numbers and modifers were good
Well I would recommend thinking of how you character would act and then pick the classes and features after
but after that was the problem.
I like tanking in most games so that's why I chose him to be a barbarian
I'm talking RP
dive in headfirst, ask questions later
what's rp
And the problem is…?
Role play
how does the background affect my choice of character or stats? and how about the equipment?
Your background will help increase your ability scores, give you a few more proficiencies, and give you an Origin Feat.
I saw a game played by natural six, one of them was using a short bow but when he shot with the bow he never ran out of ammo, so why say I have 6 arrows? or is this something the dm states?
Then your starting equipment is based on your class and your background.
When using dnd beyond I think it actually tells you that in grave detail
since you talked about those, when do i know if im profiecient in something? and what are feats
You’re proficient in something if a rule says you are.
Your class and background will both give you a few skill proficiencies, for example.
it told me about the background and it's effects yes, but about the equipment and arrow thing?
Your species might as well.
aha
That up to your dm
ok ok good
If you’re using D&D Beyond, it will show you recommended starting equipment based on your class and background.
Or you can take their gold equivalent and buy your own equipment.
i also saw someone talk about dragonborns and said they have darkvison and another one said that they don't
I saw his video but the one were he wrote down everything manually from the player handbook
The dragonborn in the 2024 Player’s Handbook do have darkvision.
The ones in the 2014 PHB did not.
and goddamn
ok got it
Normally, yes, you’d need to spend ammo to fire a weapon with the ammunition property.
which PHB should I use or is it just for prefrence and i can mix and match?
Many DMs ignore it for simplicity, or track it only when resources are scarce.
got it, thanks
You’re probably already set up using the 2024 PHB, which is what I’d recommend.
That’s effectively the default in D&D Beyond.
Alright thanks!
great
ok so now that i have my character and I understand why I chose everything about it. how do I jump into a game on the server here or is there anything i need to do first?
#find-a-game has instructions for finding a game here on the server.
#learn-to-play has a few other recommendations for finding a game.
You can also share your character in #character-discussion if you want to show it off or have someone double-check everything.
Hey there
Is guidance as good in dnd as bg3 im wondering if i should add it to my Druid
Yes & no, though perhaps this is a better question for #dnd-discussion or #character-discussion . Yes in the sense that a +1d4 to ability checks is a sizeable bonus. No in the sense that the DM's world is generally more interactive and reactive than BG3. For example Guidance has verbal components, so it may not be the best idea to cast it in social situations
If I use a spell and miss does it consume a spell slot
Yes
Any advice for making a new character for a game you don't know much about?
Stick to the basics and use standard array, don’t make your backstory to specific
...would a goblin barbarian be too chaotic?
I'd say neither of them are inherently chaotic, so no.
No sounds like a great character to play
And how should one name a goblin
I'm not sure if there is some info/history should keep in mind, maybe a goblin language?
just google a goblin name generator or something. ya name in the end doesnt matter too much so long as you like it and the DM can pronounce it
New player here, looking for a group to join and show me the ropes! Only experience is baldurs gate 3 (I know it's not 100% the same) and I haven't completed the main quest yet.
New player here I have no knowledge of dnd
welcome

Hey Yall! im super excited! im new to dnd and just found an online campign thats starting mmay 4th. im super excited but dont know what I need to get started
watching a video rn but people are always able to give better advice haha
@normal pebble
Thanks!
but basically, a character, and imagination is what you need
i was gonna say dice, but you're playing online
yeah haha
Perfect I need this channel
Hiii I'm new to dnd are there any tips on how to do combat in the game because I completely failed the 1st one
I'm a dragonborn rouge btw
well, what happened? what makes you think you failed?
did you and your table have fun?
dragonborn too bad a actual dragon isn't playable
I hit myself with a molotov and took out half my health and then died
that's kinda hilarious
Like you intentionally threw the item close enough to damage yourself?
No I was standing next to a building and got a net 2
The enemy I was going for was kinda far away
Yeah it was
But is there a way to manage risk or something
roll better
Lmao
Actually, this isn't your fault at all.
Rolling low on attacks doesn't mean that they hurt you.
It seems like your DM wasn’t following combat rules then unfortunately.
Your DM was running the rules incorrectly.
yeah, i wouldn't say incorrectly or anything. but it seems like the dm was more interested in you/the party failing
Molotovs also aren’t a game item as far as I’m aware, so it seems like a fair bit of homebrew was involved regardless
alchemist's fire
(Alchemist's Fire isn't an attack roll)
So to put it simply: if you're still playing with the same DM, recommend that they read the rules on how combat works. They're running it incorrectly currently, and it's clearly having a negative affect for the players.
And advice for you:
Read up on how attack rolls work, and perhaps on how saving throws work. Knowing how the rules normally work can help you argue your case when a DM decides to start making strange decisions out of nowhere.
ask the dm if they are intentionally running combat differently...
Hii guys, in like a month im going to play my first DnD campaign, I'm reading a guide for actually knowing smt abt the game but it's really long and difficult and I'm not expert w role games yet
So, I chose to be a wizard necromancer, cuz it sound funny and very versatile, and I like that kind of gameplay, but I've got a question, how many spells I learn and I can learn any kind of spell I want? The guide doesn't explain well that part
Wizards work a little differently from other classes, because of their spellbook.
You start with six 1st-level wizard spells in your spellbook, and you can add two more each time you level up.
You can also add more spells as you find them in-game.
But then from the spells in your book, you prepare a certain number each day, and those are the spells you can actually cast.
Wym find them in game? Like a grimoire or a teacher or smt like that?
Yeah
Above is the link to the exact section of the rules which tell you about how your spellcasting works
The specifics for preparing your spells varies a little depending on whether you're using the 2014 or 2024 version of the wizard class.
Wait so I can't actually use all the spells I have?
Not all during the same day.
And you have to spend a spell slot when you cast it as well.
So if you run out of spell slots, no more spells.
A 1st-level wizard has two 1st-level spell slots, so they can cast two of their prepared spells a day.
Yeah ik this one
(Or the same spell twice)
But there are like lv0 spells that r really weak and I can use it freely right?
I like to think of Wizard spells like cars.
- Your spellbook holds all your spells, and is like all the cars in your garage.
- Every day, you prepare a set number of spells, like picking only a limited amount of cars to bring with you to the racetrack.
- Your spell slots dictate how many spells you can cast per rest, which is like how much gas you bring with you to the racetrack.
That's correct.
There referred to as Cantrips.
Yeah, the shitty ones u choose at the start if I remember well
I read them and ngl most of them r useless asf 💔
Haha, you might be surprised. Cantrips will always be there for you, even when you're completely out of spell slots.
its not really helpful to think of cantrips as "shitty". they are your way to do resourceless damage or give you some cool ultility
not to mention, they scale with your character level
I read most of the "player's manual" but it's js so long and difficult
English isn't even my main language 💔
There's no need to read through the entire set of rules. Most important to understand is:
- What your character's abilities are
- How combat works
- How ability checks work
But wait, I can choose different ones after short/long rest or I have to do smt particular?
Well I skipped races and classes Idgaf abt
Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can change your list of prepared spells, replacing any of the spells there with spells from your spellbook.
So to put it in context of my previous example, at a long rest you can go back to your garage and swap out which cars you want to bring with you the next time you head out
You'll never be able to bring them all, so you've got to make informed decisions based on what challenges you think you'll be facing
Ok, another thing, the limit of the spells I can get are the spell slots I have from those lvls right? Or I can get more and choose which one to use in combat? I don't get the limit to choose them
Or js spam fireball, debuffs and animate dead 🙏
The limit of prepared spells and the limit of spell slots are different.
- The number of prepared spells you can have changes the number of types of spells you can bring with you
- Your number of spell slots change how many times you can cast spells
So at level 1, a Wizard prepares 4 spells that they can use during an adventure. But they only have 2 spell slots, limiting the number of times they can cast leveled spells to 2.
-# (You can bring 4 cars with you to the racetrack, but you only have enough gas to drive around the racetrack twice)
Ohh so that what's prepared spells meant, ok got it
Are you saying you skipped picking a race? Or that you read up on only the race you picked?
I think he meant the latter
Yeah that’s what I figured just wanted to make sure 😅
I needed int and i wanted smt cool too, so my first options were high elf and wood elf
But I chose high elf, cuz wood elf is better in forests, so it's a too restricted buff
Ah, are you playing with the current 2024 rules, or the outdated 2014 rules?
Uhm idk? 😭
The way you phrased that makes it sound like you're using the old rules. In the current rules, your race doesn't affect your ability scores at all
If Necromancer is in the book you're using, that's the 2014 PHB.
(Which is fine to use)
(Note that the Necromancy subclass is compatible to use with the current rules)
Necromancer is there, but isn't a class itself, it's necromancy school of the wizard
I didn't even know there are 2014 and 2024 versions
There is a lot of difference from those 2?
Yes and no
If you start by learning with the 2014 rules, switching to 2024 isn't very difficult.
The broad shape of the game is largely the same between them.
Wizards still use spellbooks in both versions, for example.
But the number of spells a wizard can prepare is different between them.
Oh that's a problem
Are they more or less now?
The 2014 rules scaled based on your INT modifier.
The 2024 rules use a fixed number.
So it could be more or less, depending on what your INT modifier was.
It's not really a big deal.
I would recommend sticking with the current 2024 rules, since that's the way the game will be shaping from here on out, but that's just my personal recommendation.
Are you able to find out what version your DM will be using?
Doesn't sound like Rick has one yet
Im gonna ask to him rn
I take it back!
Hahaha bro we are alr all the players and the master, we are pretty organised yk?
He has the 2014 one, so there is np
He says he doesn't like the 2024 one 😅
@timid locust we are 2 paladins, one sorcerer and me (wizard necromancer), so I was wondering, other than unlocking necromancer spells, should I focus more on debuffs, healing or damage?
That's up to you! Wizard has great debuff potential, but you should play whatever you think is most fun.
Oh btw one thing, when I level up I can learn 2 new spells, but I can choose ANY spell I want or there are limitations I should know abt?
The spells have to be from the wizard spell list.
Yeah, I mean other than that limitation, like spell level, classes...?
And they have to be of a spell slot level that you can cast as a wizard
So you can't pick a 9th level spell out of nowhere
Ngl I was expecting ts but it would've been funnier to tell npcs I had a lvl9 spell js to scare them off even if I couldn't use it 😔
So because Fireball is a 3rd level spell, and because Wizard can't get 3rd level spell slots until they're level 5, you can't pick Fireball until you're at least level 5 in Wizard
Yeah, oh one more thing, I learn automatically my class spells or I have to choose them?
You have to choose them, and you start with 6 as a Wizard
So 6 level 1 spells, 3 Cantrips by default
Ok then at lvl5 I'm def choosing fireball and animate dead
You absolutely could!
Hehe my 4 skeletons could solo a Tarrasque with no problems for sure 🙏
(Yeah ik he's immune to both sword and arrows)
I believe in them 😔
Well w undead thralls I buff them, so they surely will cook (it's like 10hp more and a lil dmg, but yeah they will use the power of friendship)
Hiii
I want to start playing and started reading the manual like an hour ago, i decided to be a kenkou artificer, i already understand how the character creation is bus i need someone to explain some of the abilities work
Have you looked through the Artificer page? It should explain each ability. Or do you mean something else.
Which abilities were you curious about, specifically?
do I need different dice quantities depend on the class I'm playing?
You can technically get away with one of everything. You just had to roll them multiple times sometimes. But once you but one set, you will but millions lol
how many from each one will I need? In case I don't wanna roll the same one different times
or is this also class related?
Class dependent, weapon dependent, spell dependent, level dependent, etc. until higher levels I don’t think I tend to roll more than three at a time of any one die,
Yoo how everyone doing
thanks!
on the DND 5th edition wiki it says there is 14 classes and 1 homebrew class yes?
There are 13 classes. 12 come in the Player’s Handbook, and 1 comes in Tasha’s Cauldron of everything. “Homebrew” is fan made content, so there is an infinite number of fan made classes. They are not official in any capacity.
oh wait can someone explain to me the genasi race?
I'm new and I have a character but don't know where to start

Basically they come in four different flavors, each tied to one of the classical elements.
Earth, wind, fire, and water
And then they each get some spells and other abilities that tie into their element.
Water genasi, for example, can cast spells like Shape Water, plus they get a swim speed and can breathe underwater.
