hello new guy here
Welcome! The bot post right above yours has useful links and information to help get you started - inlcuding a link to the free D&D rules.
i rolled a level 1 fighter but no clue how to get him in a adventure
Ah! So you're looking for a group or game to join?
i have played dd probly before any of ya was born retired old fart here
never did it on computer so this is all new an confusing
So we have several looking for game channels here on the server. Read the information and instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to use them.
you lose a ton of folks trien to fight thru discord it took me 2 days to get this far
As for how to play D&D online, DnDBeyond has an article that helps explain how folks do that
?tag new online
Discord is a weird beast of a platform that supports text-based discussions and voice chat (we do not host Voice Chat here on this server).
so no one is running a game a new guy can jump into or some one to show me how to get my charecter into a encounter or map thing i make to see how this works
We don't actually host games on this server but you can find games in #looking-for-players (DMs looking for players), #looking-for-community (community servers that host D&D games), and #paid-looking-for-game (paid D&D games).
if i could figure this out i could dm at some points i am retired now an nothing but time
tried that its all greek to me but thank you
You might also take a look at streamed D&D games on YouTube/Twitch to see how other folks are running the game.
ya if i could figure it out discord kicked my butt i am sure u tube would be years
ok guess i try somthing else thank you all
Eh - it's just watching TV on the internet.
For instance here's the Dungeons of Drakkenheim Episode 1 video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNcpxqT_WsM
The Dunegon Dudes, the folks behind this, eventually made a 3rd party book based off this campaign.
Hello guys. I'm fairly new to d&d. Is there anyone on the same boat so we can learn together and explore this wonderful game?
Well first start off with the free rules and try your hand at making a character sheet to kind of get a feel for how that works, watch some YouTube/Twitch streams of folks playing D&D to see how it works (recognizing that many streams focus on entertainment first over teaching the rules). The when you feel ready to give it a shot playing, check out #find-a-game to learn how to find a gorup to join and play D&D.
And feel free to ask any specific questions here (or in ana appropriate channel) as you run into them.
same here i am also fairly new to it, been wanting to get into it forever

If anyone is free can i call someone to explain something to me?
Try just asking your question.
Okay
Well im new to dnd and ill be a dm for my friends first session (also mine) first
I understand most of the things beside how fighting works
Someone wants to attack someone else. Everyone involved rolls initiative to determine what order they act in.
On each character or creature's turn, they can move and take an action. There's a list of actions in the Combat chapter.
Some abilities can also be used with a bonus action. Each character can use one per turn.

Does this help?
yes me
Meee
Thank you i understand it now
Can someone help me
I want to make asura from asura's wrath in dnd
Dnd beyond
To be specific
Head over to #character-discussion and I'm sure someone could lend a hand.
Ok

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one haha
Hello! Would be happy to play with ya 😄
Please keep game organizing to private message or the Looking For Game channels - it's off-topic in the discussion channels.
Apologies, to be honest I was actually about to say "probably isn't the channel for it but" and suggest to switch 😅
I’m down!

Welcome new players start by reading the free basic rules, and when you feel you have a grip feel free to join a game that welcome new players I #find-a-game and or other sites such as roll20 or startplaying(keep in mind these are paid games)
Hi guys,
I m a experienced player looking for a DM, I have DM exp and I have done a lot of playtesting with my homebrew content, So I will be a major help in DMing, building the world or creating creatures or PCs.
DM me if anyone interested.
Welcome. This server has its own channels for group finding. Check #find-a-game
Someone told me that it can sometimes be difficult keeping a PBP server together. 👀 When I'm running something like that, what's the best way to keep everyone engaged?
that's a little beyond the scope of newcomers, maybe try asking in #dm-discussion
I would, but it looks like there's a conversation going on there rn.
that's not how discord works; it's not one discussion at a time
Just jump in and ask your question
It's cool, man. nw!
I mean, it's important to keep in mind that the server has rules about posting in the correct channel. Hence why I was giving you a heads up
It's OK, if the mods believe I'm in the wrong I'm sure they'll give me a hollar
Davyd's right in that #dm-discussion does seem like the best channel for your question, as that is a very DM orientated question and might be a bit beyond the simple basics. Newcomers is more for 'How do I get started' questions and avoiding overwhelming new players with too much information.
Well, alright. 😆 I'll accept that lol.
And yep, you can always jump in, even if a conversation is happening, but we understand that sometimes folk are going to focus on a particular convo, so might have to wait for an opportune time- or use the reply function to help highlight replies to each other (Mind folk with 'no pings' in their name and remember to turn pings @ON to @OFF for them!)
Oh no, it's more—I haven't run D&D at any capacity, so even if there wasn't anyone talking there, I'd personally feel uncomfortable chiming into a channel like that.
but its alright! i could find somewhere else to ask for D&D advice
It's probably less about your level of experience and more about the nature of the question being beyond the scope of this channel
DMs are just people too. I'm a newcomer on this server myself but they seem friendly enough. Unfortunately I have no experience with PBP so I cannot help you, but Davyd's right that it would certainly be the place to ask.
Hi guys
Im new
To the discord and dnd
I want to home brew a campaign for me and my friends but idk how to play dnd that well, let alone make a campaign. I’ve already started watching a podcast about it for fun but idk really what to do
Where can i start?

#learn-to-play is a good jumping-on point. Lots of folks recommend running some prewritten material before trying to whip up your own. That way you're juggling fewer plates.
Learning and playing D&D is definitely a time investment!
It’ll take at lest an hour or so to read the free basic rules
D&d is a time sink regardless of your want to run a game you kinda need to know the rules
Why do you want to homebrew a campaign? Like, do you have a specific story to tell or setting that you want to host?
Yeah, there’s this reoccurring thought in my head, “i wonder if there’s a game like — or —”
But then i get disappointed that there isn’t
And just 2 weeks ago, for my birthday, i got a dnd starter set
Oh? What are some of those blanks? I'm trying to get a sense of how to help you here
So im like “oh hey i wonder if i could do this on dnd”
Mostly roguelikes similar to Zelda and other RPGs
But like open world with not 1 specific quest i _ have _ to follow
I think I gotchyu. I need to go take care of some IRL stuff for the next hour or so. May I ping you in #homebrew later?
Sure i dont mind :):)
Oh wait i pinged you
My bad!
Also btw im using World Anvil for my campaign
So how can I join dnd partys ?
I have watched some tutorials and I think I am ready for adventure

D&D is kinda like a tool box, it has a system you can use and a so forth but these are kinda guide lines. There are plenty of sandbox modules you can pick from or you can make you own. Your box comes with the rules and an adventure to help you along. I suggest if you going to dm is to read the rules and then run the adventure that comes with the set.
Will do :)
Question what adventure came with your box set?

Hey there welcome to you both! A good place to start are the free basic rules which you can find in the bot post above. Feel free to ask any questions you may have here while you review them.
I did read the rules but I don't know what I should be talking about right now.
why can't I put messages in the #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players channels?
Check out #find-a-game for information on how to make a post
I did, but I haven't got permission to send messages in those channels
Depending on the type of post you're making, you can use the bot commands to create the post. I believe it can be typed in any channel to open the bot.
so I can put my seraching for players request in #dnd-discussion ?
Did you read the instructions in #find-a-game ?
It will explain why you can't post in those channels directly and how you do actually post
Spoiler, you have to use the bot command
I didn't understand it 😅
Could talk about anything really 🙂 The nice part about D&D is the flexibility to do just about anything. There's a bunch of channels on the server for a variety of topics so feel free to jump in or ask questions if they come up.
Thank you, I understand that much. Issue is I'm nervous because everyone around me talking about the game (just a bunch of people) are so cool and out of my league to chat so, yeah.
Also the game is older than my parents and trying to know more about it just recently is embarrasing to me
Ah no worries at all. It can be a little intimidating or embarassing at the beginning but it's totally worth it
And 5th edition originally came out in 2014 so it's not that old 😉 haha
Very few people know about all of the editions. The most recent one (5e) came out in 2014 and had a big update in 2024, so you're at the cutting edge.
:'D 👍
Any of it or just parts of it?
It's alright, I figured it out, thanks anyway
I'm curious. How do spell slots work? My druid has Magic Missile and Speak With Animals but i dont understand the slots
When you cast a spell, you expend a slot of that spell’s level or higher, effectively “filling” a slot with the spell. Imagine a spell slot is a groove of a certain size—small for a level 1 slot and larger for a higher-level spell. A level 1 spell fits into a slot of any size, but a level 2 spell fits only into a slot that’s at least level 2.
At level 1, your druid is going to have two level 1 spell slots. So you could cast magic missile twice.
Does anyone need help with their characters? I’d be glad to help!
I'm planning on creating a character, but heard it's probably best to talk with the DM on that.
Yes cause there are some character options that DMs don't allow or things you need to know.
I'd recommend creating practice ones for now. Then you'll know what you're doing once you find a group
Hey i’m new to DND, i’ve played a couple sessions with my palls but sadly out DM canceled it. I’ve been wondering if anyone knows where i could find a decent DM that would host for a group of new players (me and my friends)?

hey. check #looking-for-players
Ty! i just started checking it out now!
Can someone help me set up a character sheet? I have an idea of what it is, I just need help setting it up and kind of getting the feel for it. I'm very new to DND, and Id like to have this set up before a session I have planned. Please help!
Thanks! Will try
Guys what class would u recommend for a beginner
Fighter is the classical answer
Ultimately anything you find fun.
But some of the martial classes like fighter and barbarain may be a little easier to understand the mechanics.
But, I would just say that you should probably just stick to any martial or half-caster
Fighters, Rouges, Monks, Barbarians, and Paladins have fairly simple abilities and flavor
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Monks are not high complexity
Most of them don't use any equipment!
I think it comes from understanding the focus points and abilities powered off that
You hit stuff
And spend points to throw on cool effects
HAven't played with a 5.5 monk yet tho
I should note that this complexity list comes from the D&D game designers and is not necessarily what I would catergorize the class complexity levels.
No way in heck a Wizard is easier to play than a Monk
2024 Monks have a lot of things they can do and that you have to remember
So I kinda get that one
I agree that wizards are, IMO, more complex than monks. Or druids (my youngest kid plays a druid and they don't have much issue with it).
Honestly I think it's more important to pick something that excites you as that will lead to you diving in and learning how to use the class.
I admit, I do wonder what criteria they used to decide this
Number of choices maybe? That's the only reason I can see bards being high complexity
Yeah, at it's core, 5e is designed to be newbie friendly
I really don't know - maybe from playtesting and yeah, the amount of choices?
But no matter how many choices a monk has, it's goal is intensely obvious:
To hit stuff
I'm not the one who made the list
It's like saying battlemaster fighter is high-complexity
Oh, I'm not blaming you
Just complaining
It’d be funny if every class in the game had “good at hitting stuff” as its primary descriptor
hihi 😼
I prefer playing a fighter or a barbarian because I don't have to worry about choosing spells
Fighter FTW.
Twenty years ive been at this, and twenty years Fighter has been peak.
I don't even know where to start
Came late sorry
Trying to ping @compact sail but not familiar with the rules so messages keep getting deleted sorry :'
You can reply to them but single character posts (including posting emojis/stickers/reacts as single posts) is considered spamming.
Hey all, never played dungeons and dragons before, couple friends told me to learn it so that we can all play. What would be the best thing to look at for a complete noobie. My friends don't really know what they are doing either and fear taking the reins as a dungeon master so I said I would try it out to start. For a first time game with friends, how important is it to stick to the core rules of the game? I am just worried that we might get overwhelmed with all the specific rules and information that what might start as a game turns into a library session.
Really have no idea what I am doing so any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Hey how is everyone doing today
Kinda disappointed
Joined first session, only for it to be cancelled. Didn't get to play it.
🥱
That sucks I haven't really been able to find a group yet
Hello, new here looking for a weekend party!
Same my weekend is pretty empty and hello
Never heard of someone telling newcomers to learn the rules before playing. Typically you get a DM to run a session to show/teach. The thought of "sitting down and learning" D&D sounds overwhelming for a newcomer lol
To answer your question, it is not important AT ALL to stick to the rules. The published literature even tells you that you as the DM overrule the rules. If something is overwhelming, don't use it. Just do what's fun!
tldr get a DM to run a session with you and your friends. Let me know if you can't find one, I have some experience being a DM.
Allot of people do ask even new players to try and familiarize chapter 1 and 2 of the basic rules since that goes over everything
Makes sense, I guess it's up to the DM. I've never asked someone to. But I also don't know everyone 🤣
Most DMs ask because it’s curtesy, some design it intentionally to teach people (like my game)
Really the most important things to know is how to make a character, and how combat is ran.
If you have a starter set that’s the best place to start. Or any other beginner module.
As a dm your job is a little more complicated as your job requires you to know how to run a game, use monsters and work With the players and not agaisnt them.
?tag new dm
No tag dm found in category new.
?tag dm
No tag dm found.
Ok never mind lol
Do you know a group that plays on the weekends because I've been looking for awhile and haven't found a group
Nope just joined and still haven’t played my first session
New here too. Do some hombrew on the side but otherwise still kinda new as a whole. Willing to learn. Got the 3 basic essential books at least (to dm a session with). Willing to learn more as I go
I'm willing to learn as I go too I've just been interested and finally started looking my schedule is pretty flexible I don't really know about dnd much just want to play I'm open most weekends and probably mostly next month I will be too
How open are you all to a one shot session? I'm not open for a long term thing, but if an intro session is what you need for learning I'd be willing to have a ~3 hour session one of these evenings.
I'm open to really anything but I would definitely be up for a one shot session
Cool, feel free to DM me and we can talk more. I would host the session over Discord anyway.
yo
good wbu?
I'm Doing pretty good
thats good
Yeah just listening to a podcast chilling
Hello all.
Helloo
How’re you guys?
I'm doing good just listening to a podcast laying in bed what about you
I’m at work. I’d much rather be at home in bed chilling.
Hey is this a place where we can get into groups to play or what?
Yeah I'm talking to someone about a one shot he just wants more people first
If you're looking for groups check #find-a-game
Oh thank you so much.
Hey how are you doing
I'm good hru
You’re not alone there man.
I'm doing good just chilling
And same here I haven't done a session before
We need to find a dm 😔
One of you could become the DM. It's not as hard as it may seem like.
But, there is a channel for that: #looking-for-dm

So what s the best subclass for a rogue ?
Best at what?
I mean I want more stealthy play style
Well, any rogue can gain expertise in stealth, regardless of what subclass they later pick.
If you're looking for the assassins creed-like fantasy of also climbing along buildings, perhaps consider Thief, for their Second-Story Work feature.
What s is that sorry I am new to. Dnd
It's the name of the subclass feature that allows a Thief to climb and jump effectively:

Aaaa ok thx for the help
Why's making a character so complex
Someone helped me through it before but I kinda forgot
“Why” is a tough question to answer, but I suppose it’s because D&D is a game with many different aspects and systems, and your character needs to be able to interact with all of those systems, so there are a lot of steps to ensure everything is covered
You don't need to remember, the free rules guide you through it step by step

Ok
For the real bare-bones explanation, you need to pick: species, class and background. Then assign your ability scores (I suggest using the standard array method) and make the choices for each section.
I left to text someone back and I got rid of my progress 😭😭😭
Are you using D&D Beyond or another source?
Beyond
I seem to recall it's usually quite good with saving your progress. Maybe reloading the page would help.
It shouldn't, your progress should be 'saved'. Just go to My Characters
Do I start at lv1
That's the safe bet. Most games do.
Ok I finally finished
So I'm assuming now I just play a game
Except I'd need to find a dm who would teach me how to play
You might be hard pressed to find someone who would teach you how to play from scratch. It's a bit much to put the responsibility of learning on someone else instead of taking the time to review the basics yourself.
Thankfully, there's plenty of resources to get started! Check out the Free Rules or watch some videos on the basics.

Thank you
Most DMs will prefer players know how to make a character and understand how combat works. There are games that intentionally teach people the game tho.
i have this in my mind help me for unfinish parts
17 strength
8 dex
16 con
14 int
10 wis
8 charisma
Defense style +1 AC
have alert (so in later help me in Initiative) and Savage Attacker feet for better damage (it help me almost kill a ogre in level 2)
so i going to full fighter no multiclassing
4th, 6th, 8th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 19th is feet chose i can make
eldritch knight build
my weapons chose is a long reach weapon ,Halberd or Glaive or pike or spear and shield (i do not like greatsword sorry it not in my liking for my build) for backup i pick Javelin and/or Trident
mine battle tactic is simple mine is one can hold by himself also deal good amount of damage with have second wind and action surge my tactic is well i jump to big boy and face the it's damage while give pain
so with all thing above war caster feet is off for long-reach do not work with most blade cantrip also polarm master and sentinal combo no longer work
the spell chose is
blade ward
Green Flame Blade and/or mage hand (you can have 3th cantrip at level 10)
disquise self later replace to misty step
find familiar
shield
2th level spell
misty step
mirror image
enlarge/reduce
3th level spell
hast (must)
fly
4th level spell
conjure minor elenemtals
for pike move to polarm master (so have use for Bonus Action soon so it don't go wasted), piercer and great weapons master also this build also work with spear and shield as second backup side of stuff (we get +3 from just above feet so we must be at 20 strength by 8th)
if you use spear and shield as main style (now you can use blade's cantrip you also can also change spear to a push and booming blade cantrip) go to war caster , polarm master, piercer (have in mind in this we are 19 strength and 15 int on level 8)
for note fighter get Tactical Master at level 9 and evey long rest you can change the weapon Weapon Mastery so pich a puch weapon then when you reach level 9 pick spear and do booming blade + push combo pick
help me go after level 8
Might I suggest #optimization ?
Hello, Im new and just submitted a /looking-for dm along my friend, because we want to play our first real campaign. Are the chances good we get into the "same" party? Thank you!
There's no "chance" involved here. D&D is a social game, where you play with the people you want to play with. The looking-for-dm channel is a way for you to advertise yourself so DMs that think you are a good fit can reach out to you and see if you want to join their campaign. But you just talk to them, and join whichever one seems like a good fit for you. So if you want to play with your friend, you can just ask any DM that reaches out to you if they can join, and you look for a game until you find one that has 2 slots and you both can join it
The important thing to remember is that D&D is not a video game, so you're not just joining a random queue and getting automatically assigned to a game. You're just talking to normal people, and coming to an agreement about if you want to play together or not
Did you both mention you could bring the other player should a DM have two spaces open?
Hi, I'd like to begin learning about the DnD game, but I don't know where to start to be honest, it is a vast game haha
Hey I’m new to this server and sort of new to dnd I’ve only played 2 campaigns both of which fell through and one one shot, but it was always a blast!
Can somebody invite me to their campaign as a complete beginner

Hello I’m new to DnD and have a few questions on a character I’m trying to build and if it works well or not
I was thinking my character could be a zombie that can still be killed (for NERF purposes)
Your DM will lay out any rules regarding restrictions for character creation. Powergaming might be allowed, but likely won't be.
The exact options available are up to the DM. So anything you make before finding a game should generally be considered practice
For the real bare-bones explanation, you need to pick: species, class and background. Then assign your ability scores (I suggest using the standard array method) and make the choices for each section.
Kk
Ok
If you start with the Free Rules as a base you can see how the process works.
Generally, you can use whatever is in the player's handbook and the free rules without asking, but always ask before using material from other sources
Would a Khenra fighter be good? And is splitting my high rolls between Str and Dex a viable thing to do or?
Thanks y'all Ill go read the silly handbook!
No problem, have fun!
Wait where is it?
Tbh, not sure what Khenra is
I'm quite slow
The free rules are on dndbeyond.com. the player's handbook is available for purchase there too
And you can have good strength and Dex but it's generally better to focus on one to be better at
Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
The free rules contain everything you need. After that is the player's handbook granting a few optional rules and more options for character creation
Well I'm not buying so I'll start with free rules
Great
Yeah - I recommend starting with the free rules and if you like it and want more options, then consider getting additional books.
You can get a lot out of DnD without paying a cent
But the free rules is everything you need to get started
Why is it better to focus on one or the other?
what stats you focus on are really dependent on the character you want to play
Because you can only add so much to your stats
If you try to do both, you'll often end up great at neither. Especially since you'll usually want decent Con and not to totally dump your mental stats as well.
I see, could I be a bard who uses his oute as a weapon, but is really weak until he learns how to fight further on?
Sure, but a simple club does the same damage and doesn't come with the risk of breaking your instrument that you need to cast spells.
hi chat, i am new. terrifying right??
wanted to come here to ask if someone can help in #ddb-support with making a character based on Jonathan Joestar? or Joseph, either works. :)
(it'll be my first time playing so i wanna make sure i'm not messing up his build)
#character-discussion might be better for that.
Okay okay and can I ask what should I be hoping to get for mental stats
Depends on your build. What type of fighter were you planning to make?
Will you be using the secret family technique?
I still don't know what Khenra is
damn right i will
Jackalfolk. They're in Plane Shift. Dexterous and strong, with immunity to fear if they don't have a twin.
Uhhh I want to just throw hands essentially… I’m trying to play a pretty simple character for the first campaign just so I can get an idea for how the game work
Aah. Then it'll still depend on what subclass you're looking at
If you're not doing one of the ones that uses Intelligence for their abilities, I'd usually say highest strength or Dex depending on your weapon focus, medium whichever one you don't focus on and Con. Decent Wisdom and feel free to dump the other stats unless you have points to spare.
Or really want them for character reasons
Okay I do want to use a broadsword type of weapon so how would that effect it
Closest is probably greatsword so go Strength over Dex
Since you'd need strength for that
Mechanically they're two different stats and just do different things. But you can think of it as the difference between street smarts and book smarts
As my DM put:
Strength is throwing a tomato
Dexterity is dodging a tomato
Constitution is eating a rotten tomato
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit
Wisdom is not putting tomato in a fruit salad
Charisma is selling a tomato based fruit salad
That's a common example yeah
I just recommend Wisdom over Intelligence generally because failing Wisdom saves tends to be more annoying and show up more often
Unless you're fighting specific monsters
What's the difference between book smarts and street smarts?
Intelligence (Book smarts) vs Wisdom (Street smarts)
hi all new to dnd pathfinder and table tops eager to learn anything i can i just loved the lore and my introduction to dnd is bg3 and fell inlove with it
For your information, Pathfinder is a different TTRPG than D&D.
This server is the official D&D server so we discuss D&D generally here.
Welcome to the server - if you're new to D&D as a TTRPG, check out #learn-to-play and then pinned messages here in this channel.

👋 hello everyone
hi everyone! new here & excited to meet u all🫶🏽
Welcome as always the bot gives you a bunch of info to digest
so like how do we join a group/ find a group.
Hello everyone, nice to meet you 😁
follow the instructions in #find-a-game
and then can find a game to join
this made me giggle 😁
Hi I was looking at the Beastmaster's Primal Companion, what sort of opportunity attack can it do?? would it be beast strike? or some sort of unarmed strike? cuz idk if the attack counts as some sort of ability or skill
It can make an attack, so it'd be any action listed as an attack, plus unarmed strikes
So yes, they could use their Beast's Strike or an Unarmed Strike
ahh that's good, opportunity attacks still use the same modifiers and all right? so it would still have added modifier for damage right?
Yup, you've got it.
How do dice rolls work for character creation?
Assuming you mean rolling for stats
- roll four d6s (six sided dice)
- get rid of the lowest
- add up the rest
- note that down
- repeat 5 more times
These are your ability scores, you put them wherever works best for your character
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Quick note: if you don't have a DM yet, you might want to avoid the rolling method for determining ability scores! DMs typically want to see you roll the dice, to make sure you don't cheat.
Use the Standard Array method listed above until you find a DM.
Hey, I'm looking for someone to play and explain me all, could somebody help me, im new and I want to start this great hobby, please dm me or call me

Alrighty i'll make a server for us
Ok!
For future reference, this is not the proper channel for advertising or organizing a campaign. Please read through the instructions in #find-a-game to see where to post your campagins in the future
where do we search it then, im new to it and the guide told me to ask here
The guide did not tell you to ask her to ind a game, it explains which channels to go to in order to find games people have advertised and also how to use the bot to post
If you're a DM in need of more players you go to #looking-for-dm and reply to threads there
If you're a player looking for a DM, #looking-for-players
If you're looking to join a community, #looking-for-community
Finally, if you're looking to pay a DM, #paid-looking-for-game
If you want to post, you use the bot commands:
If you're a DM looking for players, use /looking-for players
If you're a player looking for a DM, use /looking-for DM
Post your community; /looking-for community
Finally, advertise your paid game /looking-for paid
For each command, you'll want to start typing /looking-for and it should auto complete
Why i can`t write #looking-for-dm cannel
#find-a-game explains how to set up a post in those channels
Hey everyone! I'm new to Dungeons & Dragons and looking for a beginner-friendly group to join. I haven't made a character yet and would love some guidance on that too. I'm open to playing online and can be flexible with scheduling. If anyone is running a game that welcomes new players, I'd love to join!

thats what I used lol
A tomato based fruit salad is also known as salsa
So I cannot wield two weapons AND also have a shield at the same time right? Or can I have a Bow + Shield??
Wielding a shield "takes up" that hand, so you can't hold anything in it. No bows, no second weapon, no Greatsword, no off-hand wand or staff.
Can I theoretically let’s say attacked with two weapons already, and then stow away one to a shield? Cuz swapping(?) doesn’t require an action??
Same goes for if I shot a bow attack, then swap to a sword sword+shield or something
the shield is what's problematic, you need to take an action to don or doff a shield
Drawing/stowing a weapon from your inventory can be done "for free" once every time you make an attack.
Grabbing an item from your inventory can be done "for free" once every turn. This is usually referred to as your Object Interaction.
However, equipping a shield to gain its AC benefit takes an action, since it's considered armor. This is referred to as donning armor.
So you could attack with a sword and stow it in your inventory as part of your attack, pull your shield out and hold onto it as part of your object interaction, but it wouldn't be giving you any bonuses until you use an action to actually equip it.
Happy to help. Let us know if you have any further questions!
What do you mean by "form sessions"? As in where people play games or how they find people to play with?

Thank you so much
hey i'm new to D&D i want to be a gamemaster but the rulebook is way too long and complicated
/looking-for d&d dm and players
?
I need people
can't help you with that i'm afraid
i have ideas for side quests, for entire world even for a villain and politics
it's just very hard to understand how to be a gm and how to do it well
i want long term game
like i even have ideas for possible racism between races in my world
It's /looking-for then select either players if a DM and you need players or dm if you're a player needing a group to join or use community to advertise your D&D community server. The bot will give you a form to fill out. Submit that, and the bot creates the post in the right LFG channels and attaches a thread to it. Use the thread to provide updates or communciate with interested folks.
One question. What would i do if im looking to have a group but also having a dm? Like would i do both the looking for dm and players or no?
would you describe yourself as an idea guy
If you are trying to build a community (with DMs and players) use the #looking-for-community bot commands to post there.
You could start off with Peril in Pinebrook. Learn the game a bit that way.
Hi everyone I'm new to this channel and really want to learn how to play. I don't have any equipment or books at the money but willing to read up on some. Anyone looking for a new player or can point me in the right direction of someone willing to teach me and work with someone new?

In addition, the Free Rules are available in this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play . I recommend flipping through the first few parts and making a practice character, since it's great rules practice
Of course, feel free to ask any learning questions here, we're always happy to help :)
@wheat crystal well I appreciate everyone being open and nice about. I have had a few people tell me I can join their campaign and turn around and tell me no.
So I appreciate the help a lot
Np! On getting rejected from games, I'm sorry you've had a bad LFG experience so far. Finding the right game for you, or a game in general, can be a labor in-and-of itself 😅
Honestly the key to finding a good DnD group is not to give up. Because even when you finally find a group you run the risk of not liking the people or seeing the game get cancelled.
Ok so what are some proper equates rules
Im new to D&D and im joining a local game soon. Has anyone made a Cavalier fighter that might be able to give me some character building advice?
Try #character-discussion (general character builds and suggestions) or #optimization (make the character do biggest numbers)

Do you mean table etiquette?
Yes
Pretty much the same for the average social game:
- Try not to speak over people
- Be engaged / focused
- Communicate clearly and effectively
As for D&D specific tips: - Handle out of game issues out of game
- Be mindful of your own & your table's "lines & veils" (i.e. themes and topics you are uncomfortable with)
- No D&D is better than bad D&D
- Don't "pre-roll" (typically for skill checks, rolling before a DM says to), and don't obfuscate your roll results.
As for character creation etiquette: - Your character's goals should ideally be compatible with or follow the campaign premise.
- Likewise, your character should be someone who wants to adventure with a party, and a party would want to adventure with.
All of that, plus one extra: don't screw over the party on purpose 😉
You might also find that you personally have certain rules that you want in place to enjoy the game more. For example, I don't allow intentional friendly fire at my tables without consent and I don't hold with inter player secrets.
As you learn what works for you, you'll get a better idea of what kind of game you're looking for.
Another semi related one I’d add would be being mindful that every party member is a main character; as a player, giving people room for spotlight and not stealing others’ character moments is very important
Oh OK well thank you all. I will be doing more research and looking for a group
That lines with what I want
HI! I want to learn the basics of dungeons and dragons and how to play it
Hi I’m new here and I want to get an opinion on something my party consists of
3 sorcerers
1 rouge
1 ranger
1 fighter
And me, idk what I should be, the party says they need a healer so I built a paladin and a Druid, what do you think I should be? My party thinks paladin but idk. I’m ok with playing either one but I like being a team player and want to choose the more helpful one
With a party that much at range and spread out a Druid is probably your best bet for pure power, Paladins’ best feature is their buff aura to Saving Throws but if everyone is out of range from you, it won’t matter
And the fact that I chose oath of vengeance
Because I didn’t know how to play paladin and the name seemed cool at the time
Oath of vengeance is a paladin seeking revenge for a major injustice done to them, or someone else
How ever palis arnt good healers, clerics, bard,Druid are you go tos
Don't need to heal if the enemy is dead. Big brain tactics.
But if you kill a demon they just go back to the Abyss and now are mad as hell at you.
That sounds like a future problem, which like all problems, can be easily solved by smite and hoping you never come across an enemy that can keep you out of melee range.
That’s me I’m a newcomer right here…Hi!
How do I go about finding a group for someone that does not know very much but eager to learn
Head on to #find-a-game, there you'll find instructions on how the game finding channels work, including how to post (you need to use the bot command)
There are lots of newcomer friendly games out there, you just need to look for them
Thankkks ❤️
Hui
Why aren’t they good they got the spells right
Hey all! I’m a fairly new dungeon master and I was looking for a good place to discuss ideas and maybe get some help on some creatures I might not know about. Is this the correct place for it in this discord?
Howdy :> Absolute noob here, been wanting to try this game since I was a wee lad and never got the chance. Figure I might as well join the discord and see what's what.
Welcome! For advice and general discussion about being a DM, we have the #dm-discussion channel
yea but realizing them is INCREDIBLY hard for me
i would rather not buy campaings
That's a free adventure using simplified D&D rules
Is there a place I (as a new player) can go to learn to play? I prefer to just jump right in, im not interested in just reading about it.
Learn-to-play sessions are offered through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab) or occasionally at places like libraries and game shops.
thank you
They do have healing spells but they lack spell slots paladins are another front line class and can dish out damage with smite spells
hey im new to dnd and i will be having my first session ever on the weekend is there any thing that youd recomend me doing before hand
Have you read any of the rules?
ya the players handbook
really? where can i get it?
oh sorry for ping i forgot to turn it off
Awesome! Be prepared otherwise: pencil and paper, dice if you have them, your character sheet if you've already made your character.
That aside, act as a player that folks will want to continue playing with.
ok thx so much im a bit nervous
Understandable. But remember everyone's there to have fun, not judge each other!
Sounds good I will use my wood elf Druid
Anyone got any campaigns that are homebrew and beginner friendly that my boyfriend and I could join?

Are the game times in the lfg channels for a specific time zone or do I need to ask the post creator?
THey will post the time zone nomraly if they dont ask
Hello how are you? I wanna try playing something I haven't played before and I wanna try putting a bit of this Yugioh in the character that I make and it is my favorite card. The Dark Magician - The ultimate wizard in terms of attack and defense.
This is the newcomers channel - maybe ask folks in #character-discussion for thoughts on how to build something like that in D&D
is there any instance in which my party or i could have a pet in D&D
Subclass pets/companions, familiars, buy a pet dog
Sure! Enoki has some classic examples above. But definitely something to run by your DM to set their expectations about what you want!
oh ok i will definitely run that by him thx a lot
Hey guys! I just played my first game of DnD last night and had a blast! I feel like I still know nothing
It is fine to feel this way, after 2 years, I still find myself looking through the player's handbook for rulings. Congratulations on your first game.
Hi! I'll be playing DnD on Saturday with some friends but I have no clue about DnD really I tried to create a character from what little knowledge I had already on the DnD Beyond app I was wondering if anyone could help me understand it better?
Well we can help answer any specific questions you have.
How far have you gotten with it?
Glad you liked it! It takes a lot of games before you start getting comfortable with it, I find. Like honestly, one character with 1 subclass (when there’s 48 base game now), you’ve barely scratched the surface haha
It will be out first game
What are the rules? If that makes snese
Like how is it played

You can find the game rules linked above. Which ones your DM uses (or how they change them) isn't something we can know here on the outside.
For the real bare-bones explanation, to make a character you need to pick: species, class and background. Then assign your ability scores (I suggest using the standard array method) and make the choices for each section.
Okay thank you!
Hey guys, im fairly new to DnD, created my first character, had a group of buddies I used to play with, but drama broke out between them now I don’t have a group to play with anymore. So I didn’t get to learn too much about it unfortunately. I got a cool character tho 😁

What was ur character?
I'm interested
I created him on DnD beyond. He’s a warlock that I created, inspired by the song Emperor’s New Clothes-Panic at the Disco
Ooo
I am new
his name is stewboo
He is disliked by humanity
I have no character
Aaw
How do I play this hahaha I am interested
I suggest downloading DnD Beyond, it’ll be very helpful when it comes to creating your characters
slaughter
Yup, that’s how I did it
Slaughter ever lower creature that is yet to be under your boot
Like a bug
Who can guide me with character creation? I think I would mess up with this hahahaha
Dang, can you not send pictures on here? I was wanting to show you my character and traits on DnD beyond so you’ll see
Yeah, I made a really cool myconid, I wanted to post
Where are the game masters I would like to fight bwahahaha
hello guys, I'm kinda new to the whole thing. Not really NEW I've played since November 2023, yet I still don't really understand the rules and how to play it properly and I've only played using homemade dnd sets. I have made my own character & sheet, and have used him several times. I just really want to know how you actually play because everytime me and my friends played, it always felt unserious.
So true but I have only played once
And I have no idea if pixies are ok for vanilla dnd
What's ur character
fire genasi
They say it is just a smaller version of teifling?
Ooh
I understand that, as a new player I think it comes naturally to play seriously as it is a strategy game, but when watching experienced players I seen that they don’t take it too seriously lol, there was this one guy in my friend group who’s character just kept constantly growing plants on anything and everything using magic and we died laughing every time
Unfortunately this server doesn't have the resources to teach fully 1-on-1 since so many new people join every day. If you wanted, I suggest checking out #learn-to-play as well as this channel's pins, both of which have a bunch of newbie resources including the Free Rules. Of course, we're also happy to help with any specific learning questions
nah but like, I can see that even though unserious, they still follow the rules. My sessions dont even make sense, it just feels like little kids playing with their action figures
My old character a Variant Aamisar
I actually have a good character here I am just waiting for a game master hihihi
Pixies are not an official player species, but Fairies are. It's a fairly common thing to "reflavor" (reskin) the Fairy species as a Pixie, however
Peep my advice to reign! The Free Rules are available both in this channel's pins and #learn-to-play !
im tryna get a group together with my friends to do a cyberpunk variant of a DnD campaign, ive never played DnD before anyone available to tutor a soon to be DM
Hey I have ideas for campaigns but I don’t actually play the game is there somewhere I can put ideas?
aight thanks
Try #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building depending on the nature of the idea
I also recommend #dm-discussion for DM-ing advice!
Anyone would like to guide me in finding a GM?
To create a character majority of it is just your imagination, just think of a character you’d like to use in a game, then do some research on what class and race best suits him, then with that choose which ability points you’d like to give him. It was difficult for me too, so I understand. Just gotta research what abilities you would need so that your character will have a greater chance of being able to do what you are expecting him to do
wtf what is that sticker didnt mean
If that makes sense
To use this server to find a group read through the instructions on #find-a-game .
I can private you my old character and maybe judge if it is still good?
You can also post it in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of the advice you want
Like I said, I’m not too experienced with DnD, I played like 4 games MAX, I put a lot of time into making my character just for those few games lol. But the ability points and saving throws all depends on your play style and expectations of your character
I'm curious about this discord server. While I managed to join a long-term game through #looking-for-players . I wonder how, if possible, do we find a one-shot game that we can join in this server? (please ping, Im tabbing out)
This server doesn't host games itself. However, one-shots will/should be advertised in the same #looking-for-players that you used to find a long-form campaign
They'll just be explicitly labeled as a one-shot
Like.. if I had a character that I expected to be super strong and whoop everyone’s butt, I’d put majority of my points into strength. If I wanted a character who would jump up high walls and be super acrobatic I’d put lots of points into dexterity
In the "Additional Information" section, I'm guessing? If not somewhere visible?
Yup!
Thanks for the info. I wanted to double check on that
So I’m new to dnd any tips on how to find people to play with?
Idk what I’m doing
me too lol
I just write alphabets
and collect them as well
I just wanna do a play with me having a bird and a blind fold(fire trust)
But idk how so :
idk, try asking to Ti-Moth
No idea who that is
look in #dnd-discussion

To use this server to find a group read through #find-a-game carefully!
A blindfold will be mainly aesthetic which shouldn't be an issue, if you wanted a mechanical interaction with it then it'd be up to your DM.
As for having a bird, the most convenient way would be to pick up the Find Familiar spell, which can be done in a lot of ways. Easiest would be to pick a class that has it on its spell list (e.g. Wizard), but species, subclasses, feats, backgrounds, or items may also give you the spell.
Oh alright Ty
When you start playing, do you start at level one or level three?
Depends on the DM and group and where they’d like to start off.
Some groups running one-shots may start off at even higher levels.
If you’re just making a practice character I suggest starting with a level 1 character.
Oohhhhh, okay. Got it! Thank you, this was helpful!☺️👍🏼
Tysm!
seems fine.. did you roll for those stats? 19 STR is considerable for lvl1. As long as the DM is cool with that, it should be fine
It is warrior+2 str +1 con.
Hey guys^^
Just joined, but I’ve been playing/DM’ing for around 5+ years
I am very new so I will be a player
Just a gentle reminder that this isn’t the channel to organize games. I suggest taking it to DMs or making a post via #find-a-game !
Already moved to DM’s but thanks for the friendly notice
Hey how is everyone doing today
Was tryna get some prep done but started doom scrolling instead.
I just got home from my friends earlier I didn't really do shit today
Same 😭
I didn't have internet today so I've been just on discord today
Do people have any tips for writing a story for a dnd campaign?
Take it easy. You don't need to overcomplicate things.
Centre it on the party. Make it relevant to them. Give them reasons to engage with it.
Start small. Three scenarios with a narrative thread running through them is a campaign.
This might seem confusing, but write a narrative & premise, not a story. Writing a “story” lends itself to predetermined plot points and a lack of player agency. Think “the players will do X so Y will happen” or “X happens and the players will do Y”. Essentially you set out events with certain expectations on how they play out.
Think of a narrative as a “story outline.” You write scenarios and problems that follow the premise of the campaign, but ultimately it’s the chosen actions or inactions of the party that drive what happens next. It’s good to write a few solutions, but the important thing is that there’s freedom for players to think of the specifics or a new idea entirely. Think “The players need to do X, they can do Y but might come up with something different”
how often can someone switch a 6th level spell? once a long rest, per day, etc.?
It depends on the feature that’s giving you that 6th level spell
ok ty ill double check that

Very likely, though be aware that this is an english language only server
can i stack proficiencies?
Not normally
so i cant double stack insight from guild artisan and fighter class?
“Proficiency” is a yes/no question. You are either proficient in a skill or you are not. Gaining proficiency in the same skill from different sources will not increase the bonus that you add to those skill checks
It is possible to ask your dm if you can gain expertise tho
Technically you could try and ask your DM for anything, but I don't know if that's good advice /expectations to set for new players
The rules don’t really say it or I’m missing somthing some where but typically you can’t stack proficiency’s
I’d wager DMs are generally more likely to let you trade one of those for a different proficiency than to give you expertise.

Welcome! The free rules listed above are the best place to start. There are also some videos linked above to help as well, if you're more of an audio/visual learner.
The free rules are up to date with the 2024 content, thankfully. They don't have all the character options that the Player's Handbook offers, but all of the core rules are there
If you've got any questions as you're working your way them, we'll be happy to help
hi yall. i was just wondering if anyone had any advice on finding an online dnd group??
- Cast a wide net: there are plenty of platforms to search for games besides this server.
- Be proactive: reach out to folks who post game ads. Don't wait for people to come to you.
- Be patient. Finding a good group takes time.
Is there where you post if you don't know squat and want to ask questions?
This is a good place, it's the newcomer chat for exactly that!
Cool- thank you! I have played other games that are similiar to dnd (Cairn) but not actual dungeons and dragons. I have been invited to an in person game next week and can't wait. I'll ask the DM, but i'm curious- is it a bad idea to want to be a magic user class when I've never played? I have the 5e players manuel and spell cards, but I'm just wondering. I like the idea of some of the magic classes. Part of my draw to the game
its fine. some classes are a bit more simple, but no class is so complicated that a beginner cant play it all
Not at all! You should play what interests you, then you have the motivation to learn!
if you want to avoid complexity, Wizard and especially Druid are probably the most complex in terms of gameplay decisions
but if you are interested in one of those, you can still learn them
That's very helpful. Thank you both very much! I'm drawn to Wizard, Sorcerer, or Cleric, but I can't decide. I still don't know what other people are going to be either, so that may influence my choice too
it's not a bad idea by any means. none of the classes are so complex that you won't be able to pick them up/understand them if you are interested
That's encouraging. I think I just read so many things encouraging people to go for the fighter/barbarian classes and it made me uncertian
yeah i'd ignore those people tbh
play what you want, you'll learn the game faster if you're having fun
how many Hit Point Dice we have ?
Hit dice is based on your class and class level. You can find it in the class table for your class
Thanks again- any resources on learning the magic system or just focus on the handbook?
i talk about Durable 2024 feet
The rules are probably the best way to get started. Once you've gone through them, you can look around for resources on anything you still need help with
i think you should be fine with the handbook to get started
how many a fighter level 4 have
4 ? d10
A level 4 fighter has 4 hit dice. All 4 hit dice are d10's.
Will do! Really appreciate all the help everyone
np
ok tnx

Hey there welcome! A good place to start are the free basic rules which you can find in the bot post above. Feel free to ask any questions you may have here while you review them.
You can also check out groups looking for members in #looking-for-players. Another option might be some of the groups in #looking-for-community which are larger servers with a lot of players and DMs.
How do I find my spellcasting modifier? I'm playing an Artificer with +3 INT and +2 proficiency bonus.
You have two numbers:
- Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
- Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
This is explained in the Spellcasting section of the Artificer class description.
My character sheet has three boxes: Spellcasting Modifier, Spell Save DC, and Spell Attack Bonus. I'm using the 5.5e character sheet
My save DC is 13, and my attack bonus is +5
Ah, the spellcasting modifier is just for reference and is equal to your Intelligence modifier
Oh, thanks for the answer!
It should really be called "Spellcasting ability modifier", because that's what spells that use it will call it
Basicly when you attack with a spell it’s d20+5

Thx
Does the "Looking for DM" form in #find-a-game not accept unix timestamps? It's failing to accept my 1-5 answers. The only things I can think of that could be causing it are bold text and unix timestamps.
Or is there a character limit?
I just put my responses through a character counter and they're only 875 characters in total
It's not the timestamps.
Welcome!
Sup
Getting bullied by the looking for game form right now, lol
I have some experience playing and was wondering how easy it is to join a game, so based on that I’m guessing it can be challenging? Lol
IT'S NOT THE BOLD TEXT EITHER
:0
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Wut
It should be easy from what I can tell, but I might have to beat it over the head with a glass bottle to get it to comply
If dungeon masters are in high demand I have some experience doing that as well
I assume they are
I see, so do you play often? I guess it’s pretty common to join a game but having everyone ready to attend at the same time might be challenging I’m guessing
Also thanks for the welcome 🙏
No, I don't. I've played with IRL friends in the past though, and only about three of us out of twelve regularly showed up lol. That's probably not normal though since we all were neurodivergent.
I just joined this server last night
Ah I see so you’re a newcomer like me, cool
Yup!
Why am I getting Fairy Tail vibes lol
Lol
My DM ditched the campaign he was planning but I already finished my character sheet, so I joined here to find a campaign
I gave it a shot, but I'm picky with what anime I like and didn't stick with it too long
I probably stopped around episode 10, but I don't remember well
Yeh honestly I dunno why I binged it, I think mainly because I was doing student work at the time and needed background stuff playing
But it passively endeared me lol
My favourite anime is Oshinoko, but Dragon Ball has basically steered the direction of my life
Yeah I really wanted to find where to watch that dragon ball one when Goku’s son goes to high school
That one looks so good and I was wanting to watch the full thing
Yeah he’s like hiding his powers and abilities the whole time but it’s super entertaining to watch and well animated
It's brief but cool
I think it was sports day or something in the single episode I watched a while ago
Oh cool, sure
Also do you think you’ll be wanting to join a game here?
Friend me so I can DM you
Trying to do that right now!
Could be the issue not sure never had many issues lol
Hey fine folks! Let’s please keep on topic. We do have #non-dnd-topics if you wish to discuss Not D&D topics. Also please keep game organizing/soliciting to the Looking for Game Channels (see #find-a-game)
Oh, sorry, we've moved to DM's now

Reading chapter one and two of the free basic rules is a good start
How common is it for a new player to actually get invited to a campaign through the #looking-for-dm channel?
The broader net you cast the faster you'll find something
I feel like my main problem is going to be living in Australia
you'd be surprised how many campaigns that cater to your timezone lol
i want to play dnd solo for practice on roll20. but when I click the create game button do i need to add modules, character sheets?
how to get maps?
You can make them at Dungeon Scrawl https://www.dungeonscrawl.com/
Last time I tried importing a Dungeon Scrawl map into Roll20 was a bit difficult though, but I may just be incompetent
Yes, create game on roll20 doesn't create a campaign unless you've paid for the adventure
You'll need to upload your own maps and tokens, fill out your own character sheets, etc
D&D isn't really something you can play solo, even for practice
You would probably have better luck watching people play on Youtube
can i be a dm if its my first time ever playing???
yeah i did, its a lot of fun as long as you dont take it too seriously and are just trying to learn the game with some friends
Yes you can. I do recommend watching some guides first to get a grip on DMing. I can recommend this one from Matt Colville:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
i just found out i have friends who can play with me but they are as new as me
what are the things we have to buy??
It's good to have some of the dice dnd uses.
Other than that, the basic rules are free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Though if you're willing to spend money, getting a copy of the Player's Handook is the first recommendation.
yeah my first time playing I dm'd, we were all new, all we had was a set of dice, map of middle earth i filled with improvised homebrew locations, and a pdf of the players handbook i skimmed through once
that campaign lasted like 3 years
Hello. Can anyone help me create my first character? I don't what I can choose or not and I don't want it to be weak or OP :')
I'll take notes
I’m currently creating my 2nd character, and I’ve got the process down!
Can you help me too?
oh my god
Yup :)
do you want me to DM you?
a map??
Sure
oh i see thats cool
and cheap
good we can start to play properly
i wouldnt say we were playing properly lol, but it was alot of fun

not sure then, im sure you can find some premade characters if you do a google search though

Hello I'm a new comer. I have only ever gotten maybe 4 sessions into a campaign before life got in the way with my dm. I am looking to get into a good campaign filled with fun, fantasy, friendly environment, and plenty of interactions. I am available to play on Saturdays (session must end before 7pm EST) and Sundays at anytime. Please dm me or tell me how I should go about looking for a group
The lfg instructions have been unhelpful thus far
hello everyone nice to meet you. I'm new here and i want learn to play
Hello I’m a newcomer, the closest thing I’ve come to playing dnd was baldurs gate 3 and I’ve listened to podcasts but I don’t know how to fully play I am wanting to learn and play
I would also love to know if there are any available campaigns that are on sundays around 8pm EST
Hi, I'm a new comer to all this. If anyone's willing to teach me the basics and start up a round, I willing to give it a go
You can also try Roll20, LFG on Reddit or the D&D Beyond forums. Other options also exist!
Ok thank you
Is there a difference between cheap (but beautiful) aliexpress dice and some high end expensive dice?
I've got one from china and they seem to be a rlly good quality despite the price
As long as you can roll them and read the numbers a dice is a dice
Why are some so expensive then
You pay for the brand or smth
Because they're handmade or they're of a higher quality and less chance of breaking if dropped
Basically
What dice do you use?
Just to be sure.
When someone attacks from stealth you roll against the armor class of the enemy with an advantage right?
Ive read somewhere that instead roll a stealth check against a passive perception check of the enemy
unless there is another source of disadvantage to cancel out the advantage, yes
Short answer: yes
Long answer: If you successfully take the Hide action, you gain the Invisible condition. That condition gives you advantage on the first attack.
Ok so the stealth vs perception check isnt true then?
to successfully take the Hide action you roll a stealth against their perception
Depends on the version of the rules you are using.
Im already hidden
The enemy isnt aware of my position and of me and im attacking
5e
In 2014 it's mostly what we call a contested check, Stealth vs Perception (passive or otherwise). In 2024 it is a fixed DC and then an enemy can Search against your roll.
I mean 2014 rules or 2024 rules of 5e. The game was revised recently.
2014 i guess
oh yeah true my whole brain is still working off 2014 rules
But also, Unseen Attackers gain Advantage on their attack rolls, regardless if they took the Hide action or not (in both rulesets, btw)
Yea the advantage is clear for us.
We just arent sure since we found 2 situations when attacking from a hidden position.
One was either the roll against the AC or the stealth vs perception.
Thus the discussion was born which of the 2 ways it is
i mean its both
to determine if the attacker is unseen its stealth vs perception
if the attacker is successfully unseen its advantage to the roll against AC
(in 2014 rules)
If you're at the point of making an attack while hidden, it's already too late for perception to come into play. A creature would have needed to notice the hidden creature beforehand.
yeah they would have already rolled the stealth ideally when they entered into being hidden
that roll would be compared with the creatures passive perception if they arent actively looking
to determine if they are noticed
But also, the Unseen Attacker rule doesn't always require detection to have taken place. It's mostly a provision for the fiction. Like, if you have a bow, and are in darkness with darkvision making an attack against someone outside, you're unseen regardless of any perception checks.
oh yeah i suppose if they are pretty far away thats true
i was picturing like 30 feet
All it takes for the attack to be made at advantage if for the attacker not to be seen, it has nothing to do with being noticed.
icic
Alright got it thx a lot for the thorough explanation 🙂
Hey guys idk how to play dnd and very little background in anything dnd and fantasy related. The world that I’m typically a part of isn’t one that talks about dnd but I think it’s cool and wanna learn how to play. Any advice?
For example if I want to play a game online how would I start
I’m literally in the exact same situation, I don’t really have much background in any fantasy things and don’t know too much about dnd other than like a passing knowledge. But it all sounds pretty interesting so thought I could learn more by joining this discord
3 months ago or so got into fantasy stuff and have just gone on a bender of nerdy fantasy things like magic cards and now I want to learn ab dnd lmao. I’m going down the rabbit hole. Maybe someone can teach us how to do it
I meant to reply to you Artemis
#learn-to-play Has some resourses start with the free basic rules, befor buying the Players hand book
If I wanted to watch a dnd game series which one would you recommend. Like a YouTube campaign
DUngeon and Daddies, Critical Roll (the most popular), There are others as well I dont know much about podcats campangs I prefer to actully play the game lol
If I know everything to do with artificers and only artificers to the extent that I don't know basic rules should I even attempt playing dnd
Dimension 20 and Not Another D&D Podcast are also great
If you don't know the basic rules, then you don't have the knowledge necessary to understand Artificer
You should read the rules before playing, like with any game
Yeah I feel that haha and yeah maybe, I was hoping to learn more about how people actually play online too as I’m not really in a place where many people would be up for it in person

Hello, i am a DND player and I like to play DND do any of you Know a Dm that I can play with that is a good Dm.
Please use the Looking For Game Channels to find a game/group to join.
See #find-a-game for more info
Most groups are fine taking on new to D&D players as long as you take the effort to try and learn how your character sheet works and the core game rules
You don’t have to memorize it or know everything but the effort put in will be appreciated by your future D&D group
Hello
hi guys! i'm new to DND and i hope to learn and get to know the game better and how to play on this server 😄
Well we don’t actually host games here but welcome to the server!
hello
You might want to check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel
Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in an appropriate channel
Could I get some help building my character? Noting I do have dyslexia so I will spell some things incorrectly
How does the party travels from point A to point B?? I mean how should I describe it to them??
I think this is a topic for #dm-discussion.
Oh ok,I really didn't know where to putt it
But you have two options. Either you put some fun encounters between point A and B or you just skip the time it takes to travel.
Hi all. New player here. What's the best way to find last minute drop-in games? E.g., to see if there are any games starting in a couple hours without committing to a weekly campaign?
Keep in mind that last minute games can be very unreliable.
And don't be surprised if that group doesn't last.
Ok, thanks. I just didn't know if there was a place that posted drop-ins or one-shots. Not ready to join a group, but would like to find some different one-offs to play and learn.
You might also look at #looking-for-community for other D&D servers that may offer one-shots, westmarches/community games (no set DM or group), and other traditional and non-traditional D&D games.
hello
hi everyone ! super new to dnd and really want to learn ! im mostly gonna stalk around but if anyone is interested in infodumping to a noob im so down
I'm also new to dnd I know some of the basics about dnd but I haven't played before and I'm interested in learning how to play
Anyone new to dming? I'm a new player and feeling like it would be fun to start a group with all beginners
bet
so basically d&d is a collaborative story telling roleplaying game where a group of people come together, with one person acting as the narrator, they are usually refered to as the Dungeon Master. They usually come up with an imaginary world and is your guide to navigating it. The basics of d&d is that there are different dice types that have different sides on them like a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and the most important d20. these dice are essential for determining some outcomes like whether or not you hit an opponent or successfully persuaded the shopkeeper for a discount.
most of the time the DM tells you what to roll, but if you want to get started I suggest going through

Is dndbeyond the best place for new players to start a campaign?
DnDBeyond is a digital toolset for helping play D&D
Best is very much a decision for the DM and group to decide on
mostly for new players to start making character sheets
Well, as a new player, I'm not a complete noob. I know basic mechanics and stuff and I've listened to enough dnd podcasts. I've just never played myself
Sort of in the same boat? I know some mechanics and understand a good amount of classes and such, but I've never had time to play, or played in general

I just haven't had anybody to play with. I really want to find a dedicated group to play with in the long run though
There are DMs looking for players in #looking-for-players and there are D&D servers looking for players in #looking-for-community
Real. I've searched the best I could, but I couldn't find any irl groups that were within an hour long bus ride
In real life games can be a bit more of a challenge but suggest checking your local book stores, game stores, libraries, and maybe even using Facebook to find local D&D groups.
Honestly, I think the best way to go about that is to do it online. Whether it be through discord or zoom. Which I don't mind because im on the road all the time
Yeah, I think me doing it through online is gonna be my best bet, I just need to find a group

I haven't touched DND in ages then i went to s convention and played a short one shot and now want to play again
I do have places around me but I'm also interested in joining an online campaign
Hi! I'm completely new to DnD, all I've done so far is watch videos on youtube and now I want to try an online campaign with my friends (we can't really meet up often irl)
so I just wanted to know what sites and stuff will be able to get me started
I would start by checking the pinned info.
alr thanks
Wait no misread that badly
Anyway, the most sites would be (shockingly) D&DBeyond, Roll20, Discord

See above! If you have more questions, don't hestitate.
There's a lot of places to start
Do you have any tips for creating a NPC or villain for your dnd campaign?

Hello guys (again) !!! Little question:
What is "Viscous moquery" ??
Vicious Mockery
A spell that does damage and imposes Disadvantage on a target in the form of insults.
Cool !
Now I need to understand something
Are we playing DnD on this discord ? Or this Discord is a intermediate for another platform to play DnD ?
Little lost sorry...
hey all, I am considering getting into DnD online - got hooked on Dimension 20 and thought it looks like a great time. How long do sessions go for? I have fatigue issues and I'm unsure if I could do a 2-3 hr session but may be able to manage 1hr-ish. Any thoughts appreciated
Games are not hosted here on this server, but there is a channel for looking for groups. See #find-a-game for instructions 👌
So DnD has/is a online game ?
It can be played online or in-person, depends on the table
It's not a videogame though, if that's what you're asking (Or I mean it has some video game adaptations, but D&D itself is a tabletop game)
Understood that part😅
I'm not just in a country that have game stores for DnD
So when I heard there was a Discord to play it (?) I decided to take my chances
Don't know how it works though... know the basic rules but don't know how to play here
go to #looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm
if you want to set up a post go to #find-a-game
Well like I said, you can check out #find-a-game for instructions on how to use this server's channels meant for finding groups to play with
Generally those groups would then be hosted on other private discord servers, or whichever method the DM is choosing to use
though I recommend you use a website like https://timeanddate.com to convert different timezones to your own to see if it fits in your schedule
Typically 4-5 hours with a break or two, though there are also games which last 2-3 hrs
This varies between groups
oh wow - bugger - any recs for equivalent style games with shorter rounds / sessions?
You could look for Play By Post D&D games (check #looking-for-community as some community D&D games/wetsmarch games are text-based D&D only). This would mean you don't need to spend 2-3 hours in a game session but post at a cadence set by the group/game.
For non-D&D games you wanna ask in #non-dnd-topics
do players supposed to get material and gold from a random monster in the jungle???
Depends on the monster. If you look in the new 2024 Monster Manual they'll talk about what kind of loot, if any, to expect from different monsters.
An example would be...
Individual.
The monster doesn’t have a treasure hoard, but it might keep monetary treasure.
Treasure Theme (Arcana, Armaments, Implements, or Relics).
The monster’s treasure hoard features magic items with the noted theme.
Ankheg
Habitat: Forest, Grassland Treasure: None
or
Assassin
Habitat: Any Treasure: Implements, Individual
i see thanks for the example i really need it
hello everyone. i am another noob

any good videos of people playing dnd so i can see how it is on the table???
critical role but don't expect your DM and other party members to be that good at roleplaying
we are all new i expect that much 😂
i just want to know how things are supposed to go
Well it's not just that they're experienced players... They're also working actors.
oh i see
Some various podcasts and streams that may be worth a look:
- Dungeon Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim (pretty clean, homebrew campaign but stays pretty clsoe to core rules)
- High Rollers (very homebrew but generally good mechanics, not family friendly at least in the language department but also some minor sexual innuendo)
- Tales from the Stinky Dragon (homebrew campaign but fun and family friendly)
- The Re-Slayers Take (more entertainment rather than by the rules but it's family friendly)
- Oxventure (past campaigns were Not By The Rules per se but very, very funny in that fun chaotic "we're new to D&D" way. Newest campaign is very homebrew but well done.)
thanks for the help i really appreciate it
Wow this server has everything..
ello fellow newcomer here!
Just don’t listen to it if you ever plan of playing drakenhime
Hey! I'm a fellow beginner as well! ❤️

Hello yall
Guys I fear I'm dragging a one shot out longer than it should be
Nah it was one session and everyone seemed fine but I do NOT want it to happen again
An entire city was on fire and cultists were slaughtering "non believers" and I am a druid so I decided to look for an exit. I found that I knew a way out but that would only lead to more fire, I then asked if there was a man hole and there was so I decided to open up the man hole and gather civilians as cultists were fighting some guards nearby, I used some rope to get people down. This fat merchant then goes first and I fail my strength check and he takes the rope down with him, then I used my clothers for makeshift rope and it was good rope then a child went next and I rolled a nat 1 so the child died then I convinced the mother she was fine then rolled a nat 1 on the mother which killer her also. By this point the civilians ran away and the cultists came over to me some I jumped in the manhole and used the merchant as bait as I was hiding in the water as an octopus, then I jumped out. The dm said "This was suppose to be the end but we had a sewer delver" we all laughed and we had a funny time which he said right after is the type of campaign he wanted
Sorry for the paragraph but context was needed and I dont know if this is natural or not in dnd
Things happen I was going to say it’s not uncommon for a oneshot to last 8 hours or so
Its lasted a couple sessions mainly to test how well we get along with each other but also to give our dm some things we liked about the session and stuff.
Hey everyone, I am brand new and would love to learn how to play D&D. Played it once at Zenkaikon and really enjoyed it. Would love to continue to grow and learn more. Where should i start to get acquainted with groups?
i wish even knew but im so new im sorry
well I'm new too but from what I gather the Spell save dc is the number that you need to roll equal to or higher than to reduce/resist a spell's effect. A saving throw is a throw that is higher than or equal to the spell save dc so it is a throw where you resist the spell's effect
I think that's it
It is the minimum number someone needs to roll, after all bonuses & penalties are applied, to succeed on a saving throw inflicted by a spell
Ex: A Wizard casts Fire Ball (DC16), which forces a Dex Save. I have a +4 bonus to my Dex Saving Thows and roll an 11 for a total of 15. That doesn’t meet or beat 16 so I take the full 8d6 fire damage
Ex 2: Lets say the same scenario happens but my party’s Cleric cast Bless on me the round prior. Now I get to add +1d4 to my saving throws. After I roll that 11 I roll a 3 on my 1d4; given my +4 on Dex saves I get a total of 18, which beats 16. Instead of taking the full 8d6 fire damage I now only take half
Hello guys
I am interested in d&d
I read and watched few vids about it and i think i get the main points but at the same time i feel like scartched the tip of the iceberg
I was hoping if someone can show me the ropes or answer some questions i have
I can try, but I don't have too much experience.
i have some experience; I could try to show you the ropes…
Cool.
First thing, d&d isn't known at all where i am from so i was wondering if there is online groups or some sort of matchmaking site to find people to play with
You can search for a campaign/dm or if you are a dm search for players
It can be either one, sometimes a virtual tabletop is used too, which is like a digital map of the world with players, monsters, and such marked on the map
It varies. May be text, roll20, dndbeyond, vtt, or voice chats depending on the dm
I see
I read it doesn't cost money to play but you can buy things like book or something to enhance ur game
I don't get it, is it something like a battlepass ?
