Roll for potato
If you're looking for a game, you can read through the posts in #looking-for-players and respond to any that look interesting, or you can make a post in #looking-for-dm so that DMs will reach out to you if they think you are a good fit for their group. Read through the information in the #find-a-game channel for more information on how to use those channels and how to use the server bot to make posts there
ok
thoughts on running storm kings thunder as a first campaign?
it might be a bit much, especially once the real globetrotting adventure starts at level 5
though it is certainly possible
Yeah same thoughts here. It's a pretty extensive sandbox campaign in a stacked setting (Forgotten Realms), not something I would particularly recommend a first time DM.
But if you put your mind to it and want to challenge yourself, why not
Wouldn't be as bad as Tyranny of Dragons for a first go
The first part of Tyranny is fairly linear at least. SKT becomes a sandbox fairly early.
But yeah, they're certainly both in the category of "let's visit the whole sword coast"
should i get a set of dice if im playing online ? im afraid ill probably never be able to find some people around where i live to play with
its not required, so you would get them because you want to have them
yah they look pretty
is there a set of rule i need to follow when making my character or i can get as wild as i can? i know there are some classes and species tho
Hi :]
Depends on your DM and group you're playing with.
Usually it's safe to work with what's in the core game rules or Players Handbook
Every dm has their own rules and allow races, and classes
Dang spelle correc
ohhh i underestand... so cant just make a character and take it with me every where cus im lazy to make more than one?😂 (or i just love him so much)
Do u need an actual die to play and a board or is there a way to play on phone?
The folks in #character-discussion (which often includes me) are usually pretty willing to help somebody take a concept / description as if you were writing a short story and turn it into a functional character sheet.
See this article on ways you can play D&D online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Oh thx!
You can make as many characters as you want but to actually play them at a table with a DM and group you'll want to build a character that works well for that group and the type of D&D game they are playing.
So be prepared to adjust a character concept to fit the game and group.
In person you need dice, pen, paper, sheet though they might allow you to use ddb
Some will have maps and minis ext or use theater of the mind.
Online: not really but it helps same idea sheet somewhere online and a platform or bot
How do I make a character sheet?
im pretty open on changing the race and class... but his apearance or some part of the backstory? no
Few options. One choice is through D&D Beyond, which will give you access to the free rules. You can use a paper sheet or a Google Sheet if you've got access to other material. #character-discussion usually has folks willing to help you refine choices.
Appearance is usually often left to the player.
There's a saying in D&D that flavor (description) is free - basically as long as it doesn't impact game mechanics, you can describe it as whatever you need and want.
Maybe come share some of that in #character-discussion to sound out how that feels?
oh right
ill be there then
You can find them online easly, or use ddb to make it
Somestimes if it’s in person the dm will provide a blank
Hey everyone, so I'm new to DND, l've started a campaign with some people I met on Facebook but it fizzled out pretty quickly as someone moved away. I'd like to find a group I can play with either online or in person because I really love the community. I'm currently living in queenstown New Zealand so if anyone would like to start or is a DM then please feel free to let me know 🙂
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a group/game (see #find-a-game for information on how to use those channels).
Although if you're looking for local, Facebook and your local game/book stores are likely your best options.
Good afternoon! I've been interested in DND but I've been trying to figure out how to make a character and trying to find a group that'll help me learn along the way. Anything I've done DND related is just talk about it and moments my friends had in their games, that's it. Anywhere I can start?

are Dm just dipped on us and deleted the server before we started
Lots of DnD players are fickle. It's not uncommon for people to suddenly disappear shortly after a game starts or even before it starts. Just gotta keep looking for your Cinderellas.
If anyone is looking to let a bloodhunter human variant into their group please let me know through DM
Being a dm isn’t for everyone could be overwhelmed, unless you paid for it. Then prob a scammer
Hi 👋🏻
I'm new to DnD, I use to have a crazy imagination when I was younger and, now that I'm adult, I discovered my inner child again haha!
Welcome. As they say, D&D is the most fun you can have with your brain.
Cheers to that!
I have enjoyed learning about the rules, classes etc. And have created a character
hiii!! i’m also relatively new to 5e, i learned dnd on 2e
do you have a fav class? (important) (jk)
I've always been tugged towards the Ranger class. Hunting, bow and arrow, hand axe, light magic, stealth etc
What about you?
rangers are so underrated, such a good pick. i love them
i’ve been very into artificers lately, but i also love a good bard
I'm not familiar with Artificers 🤔 (Insight check) 🤣
they’re like magical mechanics, they cast spells by building items and putting the spell in the item
the best media example is leo valdez from the percy jackson books. i’ve seen people argue batman but that’s a chaotic good rouge if Ive ever seen one
they’re a super cool support class because they can give people items with spells on them and stuff
very roleplay heavy class as well, very game breaking too if you play them the wrong (or very right) way 😭
Oooooooh, that sounds awesome!
Is that sort of like what Percy does in Vox Machina?
I haven't actually played a DnD game with others. The adventures I've done so far are solo
yeah! what percy dose!!
i’ve only played in 1 campaign, but i played the older versions when i was a kid with my dad so i have a very vague understanding of basic (and i mean bare bones) rules
I think Percy had his own subclass that Mercer designed for the campaign. Artificers work quite differently. They essentially create temporary magic items.
yeah that’s a much better explanation
I see, I just started watching Vox Machina
Season 1:7
I suppose the world of DnD is huuuuuge and you really don't have to know it all. As long as you play along and have a good time 🤷🏻♂️
Mhm. And setting is a big topic too. Critical role have their own setting.
i’ve learned it’s a lovely safety net, when there’s so much info, no one really notices if you mess up a minor mechanic
Much of the official material has specific settings too, like Forgotten Realms, Krynn (Dragonlance) and Greyhawk (the OG setting), and many more.
Wow, it seems you're well versed on this stuff
Is there anywhere where someone can find a group and play online?
It's probably not the same as in-person 🤷🏻♂️ but hey
Welcome to the rabbit hole, there is so much here.
If you're looking for groups, this server has its own process for organizing, described in #find-a-game
But people organize all over the internet and in person.
Awesome, I'm gonna check it out!
Would be interesting to play with others

Hi I'm new to the server and was wondering how it works here, is this a play by post server or does it work differently or have links to some perhaps?
There are no games actually ran here, but the server has a lfg system where people can offer and request games: #find-a-game
How does the "lay on hands" paladin level 1 ability work? Can I heal as much as I want, up to 5x my level? Like... If I am level 5, my healing pool is 25. And when I cast "Lay on hands", I can heal any amount up to 25? Or do I heal all the 25?
2024 version
As a Bonus Action, you can touch a creature (which could be yourself) and draw power from the pool of healing to restore a number of Hit Points to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in the pool.
2014 version
As an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore a number of hit points to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in your pool.
2024 btw
Davyd covered it - you have a pool of healing points. As a bonus action you can touch 1 creature and use any amount from that healing pool to heal the creature, including using 5 points to remove the poisoned condition.
Ok, thank you
Hey guys, it’s my first time with DND. Can someone please send me any side where I can create a character and that helps me with my character since I don’t know what to make to be honest yet and I don’t have a book at home with the stuff.

Hey quick question is it ok if I send you my character sheet and you take a Quick Look at it
If it's on DnDbeyonnd you can set your character to public and copy and paste the URL to it here
I'd also suggest checking with folks in #character-discussion for getting reviews and feedback.
I made my character, what now?

hai umm, what level in 2024 can a cleric heal diseases?
Lesser restoration can do it.

Level two spell, so third level cleric.

Ah, shucks. Sorry, it was the 2014 version that could. Looks like '24 only cures conditions.
oh ok, can greater restoration?

What does the -1 1d6-1 for damage/type im interperting that its whatever 1d6 roll is -1
yes, it subtracts one from the total number rolled
thank you I am creating a DND journal and I am trying to learn and undertand my char sheet
nice, have fun
what are all the types of mimics in dnd? i know theres Common, Killer, and Metallic?
Not sure if Metallic Mimics are official. As far back as 2e there's only been common & killer mimics iirc, unless you want to count unique statblocks
no thats fine ty
Hi everyone! I’m a newish DM with 2-3 years of playing experience. I’ve run a few one shots ranging from level 1-3 with friends and am now looking to hone my DM skills further with a mini campaign maybe. I feel like I know my group of friends and DM-img for them is fun but I would like to expose myself to new players and new challenges, playing styles they bring. Any suggestions on where I could post looking for players for a level 3-5 mini campaign? I’m open to online or in person (based out of Sacramento, CA). Also any tips for newer DMs so very welcome!
Awesome! Thank you, I now have access to those channels!
Hey just come for some help, I see people in this channel refer beginners to the looking-for-dm but Im not sure how it works, I seemed to have missed how to use the Monodrone. If someone can point out the obvious to me that would be great.
#find-a-game might be what you're looking for.
Thank You, yes that is what im looking for
Are there any campaign session set near or in asia
Are you wanting an Asian themed campaign or you looking for a game in Asia?
Your preference really
A lot of people are still using 2014
Yoo anyone know what the name of like, a building where adventurers get quests from is called? Thought it was a guild hall but that doesn't seem right, cheers
Could be, if the adventurers have a guild. Hiring hall would be my other initial suggestion.
Yea I was thinking the same but neither seems right
Guild hall makes perfect sense to me
Based on Goblin Slayer
I'll probably just go with that, seems like the best choice even if it doesn't really make total sense
What do you feel the function of the place is?
The function of the place I want is the standard building where you go to form parties, get quests and such, so guild hall doesn't really make sense but it could work
Bounty Hall
Or just any tavern
Also geah
Both seems plausible
I think the best would be Guild Hall, ya make a party then look at a quest board, ez pz

how does CR work? if someone with a CR of 20 gets to 2 hit points, is its CR still 20?
Yes cr just means challenge rating basically the difficulty of the monster or creature
Bigger number
Harder to beat @lyric fjord
i meant more like, if you get a creature closer to death does its CR go down? im gonna play a dealmaker warlock and my level needs to be higher then their CR/level. can i tame a dragon at level 3 if it has 1 hit point left?
Nope it stays the same the whole way through
dang thats gonna make it a whole lot harder, thanks tho
I mean taming a dragon at level 3 is pretty op xD but fair
wasnt planning on taming a dragon tbf, but my campaign has a max level of 4, so im not gonna get very far with the dealmaker

i’m new to dnd do you have any tips or advice
Generally, I recommend checking out the links above (the ones in the "Welcome to Adventure" block). You'll see the rules linked, as well as introductory explanations about D&D.
If you are unsure about something, feel free to ask here.
okay thank you
Dex
So my chara idea would have high dex and wis (cleric monk)
Yep, dex is your attack stat, and wisdom is your ability’s as well (monk)
Yep double ability plus unarmored defence
I made a guide full of places to search for and post games: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms
I'm a good DM but i have one flaw I don't know when to level up my players can anyone help me
Are you using XP?
Nope
I usually aim for a big milestone, such as defeating a strong antagonist or achieving a big campaign goal.
think of levels like one of the biggest rewards you can give. And you can only do it a limited amount of time. You'll have to figure out yourself what's best for the themes and expectations of your campaign.
Thanks
I would imagine you’re looking for something with versatility, so a Cleric or Druid might make sense.
That said, I’m not familiar with this campaign but are there opportunities to get “hirelings” to help? If so, you can rely on these NPCs to give you a hand and/or round you out!
From more in-depth chats about your build, we can take this to #character-discussion !
How should I start playing dnd I don’t know anyone
But I am an artist
Do I have any doubts here?
Can you use the cleric's protective flame ability only when the cleric is attacked or when your team is attacked too?
Depends if you are looking to run the game (DM) or play it yourself, do you have a preference?
Playing in a team for example: A Goblin attacks my Rogue friend. Can I use the protective flame to make the goblin attack with disadvantage?
Probably play
In that case you'll either want to find a beginner friendly campaign (or community game) online and join up or find a local group, maybe at a game store or library in your area if applicable
Ok thx

oh thanks!
hey so in the feats part of the 2024 PHB, what does it mean when it says ability scores: strength, intelligence, wisdom?
is that a bonus?
Does it say something like this: Ability Score Increase. Increase your Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma by 1, to a maximum of 20.
no it just literally says: Ability Scores: Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom
Are you looking at the backgrounds maybe?
oh sugar, yeah sorry
guard specifically
Depending on which background you choose you have the option to boost those specific scores. You have two options: boost an ability score by two and another by one or boost each ability score by one point each.
As a guard you could, for example, give yourself +2 in Intelligence and +1 in Wisdom. And as I've said before you could also just give yourself +1 in both of these three ability scores. It's up to you to decide what's more important for you and your character.
is a crit fail (1) 100% a crit fail before or after bonuses?
where should i go to find a game to play in? im new to using discord for pretty much anything?
check out #find-a-game for info on how to find a game!
Attack roll of 1 (before modifiers are added) always misses, while a roll of 20 always hits (critical hit)
Though important to note is that this is only the case for attack rolls, and not for things like skill checks or saving throws
Is persuasion, deception and intimidation all charisma? Im playing a warlock dealmaker and im thinking custom lineage with prowess feat so my char is instantly 19
Yes they all typically use Charisma
on standard character sheets typically they say which skills correspond to which stat. intimidation, deception, performance, and persuasion are all charisma

The best single piece of advice is to keep the lines of communication open. It’s a game that should be fun, but sometimes people want different things out of playing. Only by talking to each other will those preferences be clear and explicit. Compromise is similarly important.
Thank you, I will definitely keep that in mind.
hi @inland laurel ! who in your family are you playing with?
Oh, im going to be playing with my parents and sisters (two)
cool! wish my family played D&D with me! whos going to GM?
did anyone make characters yet?
@inland laurel guess you're busy. Let me know when you have time to answer some questions and maybe I can help!
Hi! Im new and wanna play DnD but have no idea where to start. Can anyone help?
Oh sorry! I'm free, im going to GM and right now we're using the pre-made character sheets for right now, it's the first game I've ever done with anyone.
Somebody will be along shortly linking to how to play @red meadow ... but have you made a character yet?
I have the videos and rules pulled up and i know the very basics. I also do have my character made but it doesnt want to show up on DnD beyond. but i did save it to my computer when i made it
what kind of help do YOU think you need, @inland laurel ? Sounds like you're on the right track.
That's why i was asking, i don't know if I need anything else or not. But if it seems I am on the right track, I'll take your word for it. And I've always liked story's so I most likely can tell it pretty well to them.
if you have a character on D&D beyond I can maybe help show you some stuff!
that would be awesome! @shut slate

Try #optimization and explain you’re trying to build a super low AC character
Normally though folks want a character with reasonable Armor Class
Ah different thing lol
After I sent that I'm like oops different meaning
So you’ll likely want to play a rogue class character
I'm very new to DnD and don't know where to start

Anyone have any tips for folks with social anxiety when playing
You're playing a game of make believe and everyone is likely just as anxious as you (not sure if that helps but it is the reality).
Focus on having fun and helping others have fun.
If it starts to feel a little overwhelming, ask the DM and group if it's okay to take a 5-10 minute break in the middle of the game (game sessions can run 3-4 hours, some may be shorter, others may be longer).
You also don't have to "voice" your character - just describe what your charcter wants to do in the scene that the DM describes/sets up.
But again, the whole point is to have fun playing a game together
I’m really new to DnD, but idk where to start. I know about creating a character etc, but do I wait till I know I’m gonna join a group or? Idk. I literally feel like I need a tutor along the way 😂

They have digital character sheet tool, homebrew creation tools (kind of hard to use to be honest), a combat encounter builder tool, a Maps tool, and you can buy digital access to official D&D books to use
Instead of having 5 or 6 books flipping thru pages and pen and paper it makes it where it's all in one place
D&D books you buy can be used in the character sheet application
Okay, will have to get my laptop out and try it out
I learned the newest was 5E - I'm assuming thay means 5th edition
Yup
Beyond won't have all the 5e stuff you would have to buy the digit players book for 5e and it is a huge difference in creating a character between the free rules ( basic beyond ) and having that players book and the book is awesome cause it allows you to look for anything on the fly
Sorry for stepping on toes I've been nose deep learning thru beyond trying to learn
Yeah if you buy the DnDBeyond D&D books you can use it with DnDBeyond's tools.
Okay, I will look into it more off to the newbie section
ok, is anyone willing to explain the combat system to me like I'm 5? I'm not really new, I've played in a decent amount of campaigns and gotten literally everything else nailed down. I'm just really shit at combat to the point I've somehow always managed to deal practically 0 damage every campaign I've been in. My friends have tried to explain it to me but all of them are murder hobos that try to break the game at every opportunity so their way of doing combat just confuses me.
This is a weird question but would it be possible to play a weapon devil hybrid from chainsaw man
i just created a character in dnd beyond, I don't know anything else, how do i start?
you’ll need to find a dm
easiest way to do that is at your local game store or online such as #find-a-game
is the character i made on this page any useful?
I dont know. HJow do I join a game or look for a game?
The closest thing we have to a devil are tieflings which are humanoids that have a spark of devil, yugoloth or demon magic in their blood. Basically people who have descended from fiends. Making up your own race is always a possibility but that's totally up to your DM. Not all DMs like the idea of making up their own races.
Maybe you should take a look at this and try to understand the basics of combat once again. I will tell you this though. Wanting to mindlessly kill everything and to break the game isn't necessarily the norm for DnD players. Remember that you have the option to find a group that better fits your needs.
@bold basin
okay im brand new what i do?
Gonna need a lot more context here friend XD
Start by checking this out.
#learn-to-play is where you can start, free basic rules is a good jumping board
can i bounce a campaign idea off peoples? may need to go to DM if thats okay so i can copy and paste my lore & story paragrapghs from my google doc
You'd be better off posting that on #dm-discussion.
Go ahead
It really depends, doing damage depends on a bunch of factors, everything from luck, weapons, type of spells and monsters. If you play a support focused class ofc ur gonna get outdamaged by the minmax damage dealers. I guess utilising the battlefield might help if you can get advantage, cover and so on, but i doubt that it is the problem here.
Tysm, i didnt look at the sheet yet
So, im just someone who's played DnD like once with a friend, but we didn't exactly do well cuz we couldn't keep the game going
I don't care if it's one shot or not, i just want to find a game me as a beginner can play in and someone who can help me build a character!
I recommend checking this out. It has a fun minigame and everything.
Whenever you're feeling more confident and wish to start a new game check out #looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm.
thanks i'll do that
hello dnders :>
with the 2024 PHB, are you allowed to use content from the expanded rules like XGTE and TCE?
Depends on the dm tbh
oh? nothing set in stone in that regard?
The guidance is as follows:
If you are combining 2024 and 2014 options, if two version of the same option exists use the 2024 version
Otherwise you are free to use the 2014 option
This is just guidance however
So yes, a 2024 wizard could take spells from XGTE or TCOE but if any of those spells have been reprinted in the 2024 PHB, it's recommended that for best results you use the reprinted version
Do I have any doubts here?
Can you use the cleric's protective flame ability only when the cleric is attacked or when your team is attacked too?
Playing in a team for example: A Goblin attacks my Rogue friend. Can I use the protective flame to make the goblin attack with disadvantage?
Yes
Protective Flame At 1st level, when a creature you can see within 30 feet of you makes an attack roll, you can use your Reaction to impose Disadvantage on the attack roll, causing a light to glow brightly before the attack hits or misses.
Can this ability only be used when the cleric is attacked? or if my friend is attacked can I use it too?
It's on any creatures attack roll within 30 feet you can see.
You could use it on any enemy, you could even use it on your allies.
Hello gang
hi @native plaza !
ive always wanted to play dnd but never did what do i do
Depends on the reason why have you never play before?
i never found people to play with

Hi,
Maybe a silly question but are there any nice one-shot campaigns (2h max) suitable for kids? My stepson (elementary school) has been showing interest in DnD lately. I've got him some lore books and comics for Xmas. But I feel like he can sit down long enough to actually do a small campaign. Or at least I want to try 😂
My wife will DM and I will be the other player.
First please don't share exact ages! (see server rules).
I'd suggest trying a pre-written adventure one-shot like A Wild Sheep Chase and maybe using pregenerated characters (can find pregen characters on DnDBeyond).
And playing D&D with your kids is lots of fun! My own kid ran a homemade 1-shot for me just yesterday!
The free Intro to Stormwreck Isle adventure in D&D Beyond, with pregenerated characters, might fit into about 2 hours or so. There are also systems that are written specifically for kids those ages.
Changed it! Sorry!
Yeah we defo will do a pre-written one. Pregenerated character is a good shout too. Because I don't think he will be able yet to make his own character. As in his enthausiasm he doesn't really read the rules and I don't want to be boring and correct him every 5 seconds.
Your kid ran it? That's so sweet!
We initially wanted to enroll him in Kids D&D at a local Geek bar, but their lease expired and they moved to the most inconvient corner of our city 💀 Pretty much also ruined us going to normal adult DnD after work. 😭 So now the wife wants to practice DMing so we can do our own group
Peril in Pinebrook.
@astral field all my one shots are 3-4 hours but they could be pared down. let me know if you want resources!
you could always run them 2 sessions per.
I fell asleep 😭 would you still be willing?🙏
how is everyone
Good how are you?

@lost field hi!
hi! how are you
I know beyond has everything but what would you buy physical
Player book for sure
Monster book maybe If it be worth it
hello 🙂
The three core books are all good to have as a DM. But if I had to get only one, it'd be the PHB, monster second.
so i just bought the 3 books, PGB, MM, DMG, also i got the starterset 🙂
Nice, you're all set for a good time.
The "Welcome to Adventure!" box above has some info to get you started on learning. And since you have the books, the first two chapters of the PHB explain a large part of how it works too.
As for finding a group, it can be a challenge. But people organize everywhere, so you just have to keep looking and be patient. Here on the server we have #find-a-game, but there are many other places on the web an in real life.
would you say a grid mat would be helpful, for combat ?
Absolutely. I use my grid map all the time.
i think thats my next order 🙂
If you need a recommendation, I really like the pathfinder flip-mats. They're the right size, they are easily wipeable and they also store well.
🤭 got one
Is there any cool sites that have an ai DM?
Possible but per server rules we don't allow the posting of AI content or links to AI tools
ah ok
Even without the server rules preventing it, I would still heavily recommend you avoid playing with AI. It won’t really be that useful in helping you learn or prepare to play with other people, nor will it mimic the experience in a satisfying way. At worst, it can give you wrong information and create incorrect expectations or habits
The technology is still extremely lacking, compared to what actual play with other people is like
My opinion ai is not the best cause it doesn't feel like you playing it at all
heyy, im newer to dnd, ive done a session as a dm once but my friends (players) dont seem to invested. any tipps?
Do your friends seem interested in D&D but didn't enjoy your adventure, or do they seem uninterested in D&D in general?
not sure. one seems to enjoy it while the other stays quiet and means that ‘shes not creative enough’ im not sure how involve her more

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful resources, to get you started. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We are more than happy to help
Thank you
Well, step 1 would probably be to talk to the players, either as a group or individually, and find out what they enjoy or don't enjoy about D&D, to see if you can steer the adventure in a direction that would be more interesting to them. Everyone has their own preferences and comfort zones. That being said, if it seems like they aren't enjoying the game, and they seem very dodgy or unsure how to answer your questions, maybe they just aren't enjoying D&D, or its not quite what they expected it to be. If they are brand new to the game, but immediately seem unengaged or uninterested in what's going on, there's a chance that they may just not like the game
Does she want to be more involved, though? Some players are content being what some folks call "audience members." They're glad to be present and participate when necessary but they rarely take the reins.
This is also a good point. If you ask the player(s) how they are feeling, and they tell you that things are good and they are enjoying the game, then there may be nothing that you need to fix.
okay^^ ill talk to her just to be sure that she doesn’t feel forced to play with us tough. thanks for the help!
Communication for the win!
I scored 2 phb me and wife 6 sets of dice ranger cards spell cards
Just had to go to 3 different places
Can anyone help me understand how to make a charecter sheet I have my first session in a few days and I’ve got the backstory I just can’t grasp the points system I’m a Goliath monk (don’t ask) who uses a martial art which enhances strength and speed at moments for the cost of Hp thank you for reading and please respond if you know thanks!
In my experience people who like grounded things without massive creative liberty almost never enjoy D&D.
Not everyone will share your hobby and you gotta be honest about it and a bit brutal with it to save yourself from disappointment, I think. Usually the dedicated players click with D&D pretty quickly
Are you playing 2014 or 2024? Asking so I can give you relevant page numbers
I don’t know yet acctually but I assume 5e I’m brand new so I don’t know
Presuming you own a PHB what does the cover look like?
Ohh I see
Most of the stat stuff is in the PHB I think
Ok thanks I’ll have a look but it’s like a dragon
By the points system, do you mean the various systems you can use to generate you character's stats?
Yes that is what I mean it’s quite confusing to me do you think you can help
Not really, since I don't know what ruleset you're using
You can be using the 2014 free rules, 2014 PHB rules, 2024 free rules, or 2024 PHB rules
Oh that’s unfortunate I’m really sorry I don’t own a player handbook but I’ve read the free pdf file of basic rules on dnd beyond
I don’t know sorry
All of those have the same options for getting the base stats, so that doesn't really matter imo
They just change where you get the extra bonuses from
Oh yes it’s 2024 sorry I’ve just checked with my freind
What does that mean?
Firstly, discuss with your DM which system you'll be using. You can use point-buy, roll 4d6 and subtract lowest, or standard array
I don’t have a clue what that is
Let's see if I can remember this command today
Ask your DM "hey, what method will be using to generate our stats?"
?tag ability scores
No tag ability found.
Oh ok thanks
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
That command just made my paragraph useless haha
Very important note, scores are not the same as modifiers
Those scores go in the score section, to determine modifiers (which is done afterwards) you have to use a chart
does anyone know about scrying eyes? i wanted to have a scrying eye like bg3 deliever a message to my players. but i dont seem to understand scrying very well
Have you read the description for the Scrying spell?
Actual scores are very minimal to gameplay and most of the time it’s the modifier you’ll be caring about
yes but im a bit confused - if they fail a wisdom save they get the interaction?
the scrying eye i want to use it to deliver to meet with the objective giver
so i mean. i could just dm it as scrying eyes are a form of communication in my world
im probably just overthinking it
RAW, the closest you can get to guaranteeing scrying works is by knowing the creature extensively and having something like a strand of hair, which will be a -15 to their Wis save
Ask your DM if you can skip the wis save for creatures which gave you consent to scry on them
I don't suppose this is where the new player begs to be adopted into a campaign is it?
im the DM hehe sorry i just realized im in the wrong discussion for this
Given that arranging/asking for games outside of the Looking channels is against server rules, it is not 😅
If you want to use this server to find a group check #find-a-game
I'm thinking of hosting Curse of Strahd as my first time DM'ing soon. How easy is it to adapt CoS to 2024 rules?
I'm aware that there are instructions for converting from 2014 to 2024, but I wanna know how hard it is to convert a whole adventure
I think not that hard. Basically anything that references the Monster Manual you’d use the 2024 version instead, any unique creatures you should probably use the max hit point version available, otherwise you’d be fine
I’d personally homebrew Strahd a little to make him a bit more powerful, maybe with a new move or something, but that’s just me
With the dnd beyond - how do I download the character sheet I just created
You can export it as a pdf. Click on the character portrait and look for the "Export to PDF" button.
I exported but it doesn't have any of the stuff on it
I'll just fill it out I guedd
Guess even
That's weird, it should have everything, possibly awkwardly placed, but still. Perhaps #ddb-support knows more about why this might happen.
Could be an issue with the PDF renderer
Might check to see how it renders in Adobe Acrobat
Yea, it's downloaded but nothing is filled in.
How are you viewing the PDF? Built in browser PDF renderer?
Won't do me any good if I can't find a local group but it's a decent character for not knowing anything
Or an actual PDF viewer app?
It'd abobe
Hmmm weird.
Can you give me the URL to your character on DnDBeyond? I can take a look (not promising I can fix it or anything lol)
Hey Guys 🤝 I am an L5R Player who wants to make a DnD PC and run it in a game.
I am 100% green as in looking for all the PDF's I can find

^ Useful info and links to help get you started!
I love the lore, so my choices are based off the lore rather stats themselves
Thanks fam, I appreciate it
I will get you the link
The free rules are limited but are everything you need to start playing
So I know for sure I want to build;
A Tiefling anti paladin working for the devils
I read the Lore surrounding the Tieflings and thats what I want the first D&D build to be
Then I found a class called the "IllRigger"
Not sure if its homebrew or not
3rd party as in unofficial ?
As in D&D did not create it
But still accepted in play or is this like a GM to GM decision ?
Up to the GM to whether they allow it or not
Copy
I'd suggest using what's in the free rules first just to get a feel for the game and it's mechanics. If you like it enough you can invest in things like the Players Handbook to unlock more player options.
Can you make the character public?
Go to the Manage Character and set it to "public" (you can revert back to private once I'm done investigating it).
Hmmm. I can't seem to load it still. Is the character complete?
hey!!! im a newbie to dnd, does anyone have tips?
I think so I went through all the steps

okay I will ask .... dont know whats going on
I'm a longtime DM since 1998, ran 3.5 up to 5th and now 5.5e. I'm looking for people who would want to do a play by post game, anyone want to join up?
Fixed it - now to just find some people to play with

Ugh I was so excited found an adult place that hosts dnd games but it's like $180 for 4 hours but its private
Hi everyone, I'm Cas and I'm new to the server, but not the hobby. I've apparently actually been in the server for a while now and just had no idea lol. Anyway, I kinda just joined because I was wanting to make some friends. I've been in the hobby since 2016, where I started with Pathfinder 1e, but I'm knowledgeable about a lot of systems. I apologize if this isn't the place for a message like this
what should a paladin AC look like at lvl 1
I've usually seen 16-19 (16 from chainmail, +2 from having a shield, +1 from Protection)

Hello, I don't really know how to use discord and I somewhat know about DnD. Could anyone explain in dump people terms how to find a group online?
can anyone out there help me create a character pls
on dnd beyond
it will be my first time
Have you looked at the Free Rules yet?
There's multiple avenues.
- Using this server there's #find-a-game which contains all the instructions for making a post on this server's group finder and replying to others' posts.
- You can look for other D&D discord servers that have campaign-finding functions
- You can use other social media to find a group, such as Facebook Groups or Reddit's r/lfg subreddit
- You can look in D&D or general TTRPG forums such as those found on D&DBeyond or roll20.
if i see a game posting im interested in in the paid game channel but need more information on it, can i ask those questions in the thread or is there another way i should ask?
i mostly just need to ask what the ending time of sessions is and how they want payment for the two im interested in
is there a standard VTT used for all of them? I dont see where the game is hosted being listed on any of these either
Hey 👋 I just joined and am really interested in getting more into DnD. I did a practice run with a group and found I really enjoyed it. But unfortunately, I moved and lost this group. I know nothing and keep trying to look things up, but I become overwhelmed and ultimately shut down. I'm looking for help with everything. I want to find a group I can stay with (hopefully) so I can get comfortable and grow. Anyone willing to help me?
Hello
I’ve never played a game before I’m in the same boat
I have watched a little bit but it seems fun and interesting
Do y'all have characters made in D&D beyond?
This question could be applied to any TTRPG really, but when you use an action/spell outside of combat that has an effect that lasts a certain duration, how do you measure that? For example, if a condition lasts a certain number of turns or rounds in combat, how would a DM measure that outside of combat?
I want to create one but want to VC with someone to help me understand things better
The included thread is a good place to ask, and no there aren't any stabdard vtts by default, so that's something the DM will either include in the post, or you have to ask
Idk anything about characters in D&D but I can draw 😭
It would be subject to their assessment of time passing. a round is 6 seocnds. 60 seconds is a turn.
I'll help you Spencer. Or I can try.
Round is 6 seconds, and includes each creature's turn. Turn is not 60 seconds, not sure what you mean here
I mostly just know there is a dungeon master that sends you on quests and you roll dice to choose the outcome of actions
Ok yes pls
@little crane .... do you have a character? Making one on d&d beyond is simple step by step and once you make one I can maybe show you the ropes, same for spencer. 😛
Yeah I am on the same thing and I don’t wanna create without knowing what anything does like intelligence charisma there’s so much to read I’m too lazy for all of it
I also need help but I’ve made my character already
@shut slate I had my last group DM help me make a character... Sorry, I'm also new to the lingo and apps... so please bear with me.
Spencer, I can't help you if the problem is you're lazy. 😦
Im not sure if it's any good due to my lack of knowledge and my last dm didn't really teach just kinda told me what to do...
So Melon and Blas, you both have D&D beyond chars?
You couldn’t help if you wanted to bye
@little crane Here's what I can do!
Go to D&D beyond website and go to tools. make a character step by step, and if you have any questions ask me and I'll help. If you can get a character made, I'll spend some time teaching you how to play!
same goes for Melon
@shut slate thank you so much! I will go do that!
Send me a friend request.
Alright
that way when you're done we can talk! 😄
I’ve been looking for a dm too but no luck
I'll run you through a one shot, but the best way to find a DM is right through this discord in #looking-for-dm

here dms post their campaign where players apply
#looking-for-dm is where he should post, no?
depends, if u just wanna get into a game u can find games other dms are running and apply
Ahaha, this is a new account, so I have none yet~
if u want to play a specific type, make your own post and put your preferences.
I'm the type to fashion my characters based on the universe they're in
So I have no pre-made chars
Yeah that is the usual way, you kinda need the setting and rules from the dm before rolling up with a character
If u make an artificer in a setting without artificers then that is kinda difficult
Smart, how do I post in 'looking for a dm'?
Good to know!! I was worried I didn't have any preset characters, hehe
u can definitely roll up characters either for fun or if you have a concept you want to remember(if there are a bunch of neat stuff u might forget)
#find-a-game there is a command that u type in here
that will allow u do enter the stuff u need into the monodrone bot
If @tacit imp had a character made a GM like me could show them some stuff.
Ahh, I assume I just enter it? No other text beside the command, right?
... I sound like a noobie HHAHAHHAHAHAHA
Go into the lfg instruction, type this without the quotationmarks "/looking-for dm"
the bot will then prompt you with textfields where u need to fill out
that goes with the assumption that the campaign doesnt have any restrictions.
I'd just want to show them the ropes and how the game worked. so in my case that assumption would be true.
they can always made editions later to conform to another GM.
Im back
Oh, thank you so much!! Much appreciated hehe
np 👍
@shut slate I think it's good, lol. I left some stuff blank because I felt a little overwhelmed, so instead of dealing with anxiety over it, I figured I could do it later (backstory, etc.) when I have a bit more knowledge. 😅
that is wise. Backstory becomes important when you join a campaign.
for a oneshot or a demo that's not important right now.
can you send me URL for your character?
That's what I thought but I wasn't sure so I just moved forward. I'm a bit worried over my point selection/placement but I tried lol
Om not sure how to do that 😅
Im*
one sec!
Does anyone think they could help me with a character sheet for a sea imp?
As that’s not an official D&D player character species, getting help is going to be challenging.
Oh someone told me about like a imp like creature called a familiar does that help
A familiar is a non-player character statblock that’s a bit like a “pet” for the player character.
It’s not actually the character though
The backstory was his master died on a adventure and he wanted to go and avenge him in his own adventure do you think I’m able to use it then
You would need to run it by your Dungeon Master and group. Most homebrew creations and rule tweaks like this will need buy-in and approval from the rest of the group as much homebrew can be unbalanced if not properly accounted for.
If you’re new to D&D I’d recommend first starting off with official materials and learning how the core game works before getting into homebrew
Oh ok thanks
Find a good homebrew dm and hold on. The modules cost too much imo, which might factor into difficulty ij finding a game featuring one.
The DM is usually the one who buys the module, so if you're determined to play, that should not be an issue.
hey ! I’m a more intermediate player having played curse of strand, frost of the ice madden and then home brew and I’m looking to find a module to try. I like most settings but not sci-fi , any recommendations?
Frost of the ice madden is certainly a spelling of Rime of the Frostmaiden
Depends on what you're looking for. Want to run something small? Check out Lost Mines of Phandelver. Something big? Check out Storm King's Thunder.
Shadowed Keep on the borderlands is pretty good.
If you are looking for something farther from the core genre I'd take a look at some of Kobold Press or Arcane Library's selections.
Good morning everyone
Morning fellow adventurer
Springy day! 🐇
Never too cold for carrot stew!

What should i need to start playing dnd and how much time do i need for that bc i would like to play that with my family
Really you just need an understanding of the rules, a character sheet and some dice
It can take a while to learn everything but only the DM needs thorough knowledge of what the game entails
Isnt like a book of campain and some things for GM
All you need is the D&D Free Rules (which are linked above), character sheets (either paper or digital, again free), some dice (physical or free digital dice apps) and you're good to go
Those can help but they’re not a requirement to play
So how could you then play if you dont have a story
There are free adventures you can pick up, or you can run your own adventure. Just google something like "Free level 1 D&D beginner adventure"
Make one of your own, that's what a lot of DMs do and it's actually why a lot of people enjoy DM'ing
You can find them free online
But that takes time bc you need to write line a hole book
No, you don't
You can start simple; the characters are travelling on the road and they're attacked by bandits. Or someone approaches them and asks for their help. Or they're hired to investigate a haunted tower.
You don't need to write out the whole adventure, you can write out just what you need for your next session
Or improvise it all completely
But you need how that happenes and everything else and so much else
My kid ran a D&D game for me last Sunday and it was simply "go explore this area" and then the story spun off from there.
Generally an understanding of the rules is beneficial, yes
But you don't need to have the rules memorised from cover to cover
Are there a lot of rules and are they hard to learn bc isnt there like 60 pages sheet pdf
The rules are intended to be referenced, not memorised
Having played this game for years now, I still forget stuff and mess things up. But I can always go back and look things up and improve.
If you're using the D&D Free Rules you only really need an understanding of Chapter 1: Playing the Game
And even then, you can just reference the rules glossary if you forget something
This is a lot of rules i think
Again, you do not need to memorise them
All you really need to know is where to look a rule up
Which thankfully with the free rules is one of two places generally speaking; Chapter 1 or the Rules Glossary
Bjt yeah most likely i will never play it bc my parents hate role playing games maybe i will play with my sister and her girl friends. Bc one of them know how to play dnd
¯_(ツ)_/¯
???
That's a shrug meaning "we're not sure how to help you there"
It's a shrug gesture, acknowledging what you've said but not really able to offer any advice
Oh ok
"It is what it is" or "you do you" etc etc
You might see if some of your friends would like to try playing D&D with you
Maybe i will be able to talk and get one game with my parents but it will be hard
Do not pin playing on specific people playing with you
Maybe but most likely no maybe i will start playing with two friends LoL and maybe with those two and maybe one more
You'll have better luck looking for people who want to specifically play D&D, rather than trying to get specific people to play D&D
What kind of dices you need
What's called a "polyhedral set"
It contains one of the following:
- twenty sided
- twelve sided
- ten sided numbered 0-9
- ten sided numbered 00-90
- eight sided
- six sided
- four sided
They're often called "roleplaying dice sets" or "D&D dice sets"
You can also use online dice apps, there are hundreds of them
Greetings. I’m looking for someone to discuss character creation with for a while. I’m a newcomer to DND and I’m unsure about what to do when it comes to this. I have my desires and ideas on what kind of characters I want to play as, but I’m not sure if it can be deemed acceptable by most DMs and players. Outside of that selection of character ideas, I’m also unsure of what I’d enjoy playing or if I’d even enjoy playing at all. Could anyone be willing to help?
If you start with a class and species and background from the free rules or players handbook you’ll probably be fine at most D&D game tables
Kinda hard to help with such an open ended statement. Do you have some specific questions?
I am already aware of that. What I have in mind does not fit into said conditions. Which is why I'm here to get answers and opinions.
No one other than your DM can provide answers unfortunately, at least as far as what's acceptable
And honestly most opinions will likely circle back to or be caveated with "ask your DM"
But beyond asking what your DM may permit (which no one but them will know), what other questions do you have?
is there a good starter build for characters, something that both helps you learn DnD but is also easy to operate
Yes, I do.
One thing that all of the characters I want to play as have in common is that they are based off of the world of the series known as Madness Combat by Krinkles. This means that they are always transferred from that world to the DND world in one way or another, most often through reality warping. And I can see a lot of problems with that…
The world includes:
- Advanced technology such as modern guns, cloning, and heavy genetic augmentation.
- Cultures and societal foundations that are either non-existent or that can only be described as madness (no pun intended).
- People are never born from traditional biological birth.
- Its own complex lore and history.
I am aware that most of the high fantasy campaigns out there have no place for any sort of modern technology. And especially those that can be replicated So the question is: how are remnants of technology seen? Examples from my roster include permanently affixed gas masks, retired scientists, the genetically augmented, etc.
I'd personally recommend Fighter if you want to learn the martial aspect of the game, or Wizard if you want to learn spellcasting
i like magic so id go for wizard
I may have accidentally pinged you in this message. I assure you that it won't happen again.
You didn't, but thank you for being aware of that
So you're setting yourself up for disappointment by wanting to play a very specific concept
This means that they are always transferred from that world to the DND world in one way or another
This is narrowing down what games you'd be able to play in to next to zero
Because with that criteria, you're not just looking for DMs who will let you bring in another character, but another character not just based on another IP but directly connected to that IP and willing to establish a direct, in-world connection to that IP
This honestly sounds like you don't want to play D&D, but a tabletop roleplaying game set in whatever IP this is you care about and you've just chosen D&D as the nearest proxy for that
Before I say anything, what does 'IP' mean?
Intellectual property
Basically a way of encompassing everything to do with a "thing", be it book, cartoon, film series etc
Hello!! Are there any good websites to buy the 5e rulebooks? I'm not sure where to begin...
Budget's a bit tight, so what is the 'best' one?
Many, but it depends on if you want digital versions, physical versions, both, as well as where you live
Alright then. I think I understand. And honestly, I never considered this. But now that it is mentioned, I agree with it. Thank you for your time.
As for "best" one, the Player's Handbook is generally a good start but not required as you can use the D&D Free Rules
Physical!! In your opinion, what is the 'best' one? If I buy a rulebook, I want it to cover everything I need~
Although now I wonder what I can do about this currently. Perhaps I should figure that out myself.
No rulebook covers everything you need, that's why they're are so many
But the Player's Handbook is a good starting point if you're a player
That's probably a question for #non-dnd-topics
Alright.
Thank you!! Any good places to buy it near SEA? Amazon likes emptying my wallet, I fear
Please stop pinging me by disabling pings as demonstrated in the gif
(or just don't use the reply feature at all, thanks)
Ah, so that's a ping? Apologies, I thought ping was @ or smth...
Replies include @ ing someone unless you turn it off (as shown in the gif, which is why I posted it when you pinged me the first time)
And no, I can't recommend shops in your part of the world because it's not my part of the world
Sorry
Ah, so it's a literal 'ping'... apologies for that
Thank you for that!! Here's so that I can find a cheaper Player's Handbook...
Remember you don't need the PHB to play, the D&D Free Rules have all the information you need to start playing
Awesome! Thank you so much for this detailed guide!
hey how do i get weapon mastery with nets?
Nets are no longer a weapon in 2024, so they don't have a mastery.
Hey guys, I’m absolutely new to dnd, but me and my friends really wanted to try it out, can someone help me with some basics? I’d like to chat, so dm me 🙏!

Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
should help explain it
Hi I'm a new dm and trying to figure out the game to make it fun for my players. I have a Wizard a Druid and a Warlock but I couldn't figure out spells. Can someone explain in to me or recommend a source please
Can you elaborate what you mean? What was it about spells that confused you?
Like i don't know about them yet but it feels like there are so many and how and where to use them or their damage or healing or whatever they do i don't really know. I tried to look it up but it only confused me more because there were so many and I didn't even get anything. I know I'm not being specific I'm sorry but I'm really confused
And like how do they learn spells and can they use it over and over
Let's look at the characters and their class tables one at a time. Are you trying to pick the spells for your players, or just understand what they can do?
hey yall i made a character sheet can anyone tell me if anything counteracts in my character sheet
\
You should post a link to the character sheet in #character-discussion we can review it there
thanks!
Can I have more than one concentration spell up at the same time?
Nope. The point of concentration as a mechanic is to prevent that very thing from happening.
That's why concentration spells tend to be pretty good!
Is there any way to go around that rule?
Nope! It's one of the most hard -coded rules in the game, actually.
There are a few exceptions and none of them are something you can just decide to use. For example. if a wild magic sorcerer "accidentals" a spell into existence with their wild magic table, it doesn't require concentration even if it normally would.
Another one is Glyph of Warding.
Certainly nothing you can customize, at the very least.
yep
So sadly I can't Hex and Firewall without losing Hex
hey ! I’m a more intermediate player having played curse of strand, ice wind and then home brew and I’m looking to find a module to try. I like most settings but not sci-fi , any recommendations?
What are you looking for from a module? There's the mega-dungeon of Mad Mage, the non-violent approaches of Wild Beyond the Witchlight, the sandbox of Storm King's Thunder...
If you're more specific, folks can help better.
It's also a matter of whether you're running it (in which case, #dm-discussion) or playing.
Every class has only so many spells they can learn/use
cantrips are at will.
Anything else will use a slot, if a character only has 2lv 1 slots that how many times a spell can be used.
Read the spellcasting chapter
I just want to understand so I can rule the game
Okay thanks
OK. Especially when everybody is learning the game together, it's fair to set an expectation that the players should understand what their characters are capable of to help minimize the amount that the new GM has to learn. But we can walk through the big ideas a little bit at a time.
Kyle gave you a decent birds-eye view, though.
None taken. Editing for clarity.
Every spellcasting class has a "most important" ability score that all of their magical stuff will key off of - those are Intelligence for Wizards, Wisdom for Druids, and Charisma for Warlocks. Those characters will want their respective key ability score as high as possible so that their spells have the greatest possible effect.
Each of the three classes you asked about has access to a small number of at-will minor magical effects called cantrips. They're the "I can do this all day" effects. At any given level, a character has access to the number of cantrips that's shown in their class table. At first level, it's usually 3, plus or minus 1. That leaves out anything from an origin feat or species trait. A cantrip could be cast all the time, every day, with no drain on the caster.
They also have a limited number of more powerful effects that they can use called spell slots. At first level, wizards and druids have 2 first-level spell slots available to them. That means they can cast 2 of their non-cantrip effects between long rests - either the same effect twice, or two different effects once each. How does the player know what effects they have available? They'll need to read the spellcasting description for their class.
A warlock's Pact Magic feature works a tiny bit differently. At first level, they have 1 spell slot. From second level up for a long way, they have 2 spell slots. BUT, they get those spell slots back after a short rest instead of a long one.
Is that enough to help get you going?
Yes it really helped thank you really much
I understand it better now and I'll go look up the spellcasting chapter
We wanted to start the game tomorrow so i was stressing and thinking i need to learn every spell or something but this helped
I've literally been playing on and off for more than 30 years, and I don't know every spell by heart. But, when I'm a player, I make a point of understanding how the spells I can use work (if applicable), and I clearly communicate to the players at my tables that I expect them to do the same.
If ever a player wants to use a spell and you don't understand it, it's always fair to ask them, "What does the spell description say?" or "Would you read me the spell description?"
Yeah i will tell my players to make their own research too. Thanks again
Hey, I'm a brand new dm and have never played DND before, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice for adding in all the fluffy bits between the start and the end of a session, I've decided we're doing a one shot where the group is tasked by a rebel group to assassinate the king, by the end the group will have to make the decision to either keep him alive or go through with the job, but I'm stuck on what to put in between that, does anyone have any advice?
What do you mean by fluffy bits?
hey, i managed to find a group in my area 🙂
Congrats
Hi all silly q we have the phb2024 and looking for the expansion books.....is Xander or Tasha compatible and usable?
Xanathar's and Tasha's are both compatible, yes
Basically, unless a rule or character option is directly updated in any of the new books, you can still use the older version.
The kind of bits in the middle with NPCs, and locations and stuff
An adventure has a goal, and the players should encounter obstacles in pursuing that goal. Those obstacles can fall broadly into three categories: combat, exploration, and social encounters (and these can overlap to some degree, of course).
Combat means opponents are willing to fight—and possibly die—to stop the party. Exploration can include natural obstacles (a gorge with no bridge, a mountain, etc.) and/or artificial ones (traps, puzzles, hazards). And social encounters means people require placating in some way for the party to get what they want.
If you know what your players like/what motivates their characters, add in challenges they'll want to overcome.
Does that help any?
Yes, definitely! Thank you, 😊
I just realized how much Dm's hate homebrew 😭 I've asked if it'd be possible to play as a mimic to a few Dms and have gotten Rejected from joining campaigns for even mentioning the idea
There's a lot of unbalanced homebrew, for one. Also, it's bringing in an element that the DM didn't design for in the world, which can ruffle some feathers.
Have you actually provided a full homebrew stats for a PC mimic for the DM to check, or are you just asking to play a mimic outright
I do understand that, thats also why i try my best to keep t reasonable and balanced
provided i can send it in a second
That approach isn't common enough, so I think a lot of DMs take a pre-emptive "no homebrew" stance, rather than trying to evaluate whether each homebrew design is reasonable.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/species/629449-mimic alot of DMs i feel like don't even read it and just say no i've even offered to lower some of the stats like making bite 2d4
You're asking the DM to do more work rather than using the baseline options, so I can understand why they might balk.
The DM has to ensure the game is fun for everyone (including the DM) and throwing the work of having to balance things around a homebrew creation that might not even fit the general vibe of the game they and the group want to play is a big ask.
I do understand that but is that why Dnd Beyond is there? to help make it easier?
Even if it's published on DnDBeyond does not make it balanced to the core game rules
Often, it's also the DM that is introducing homebrew rather than the other way around.
Someone in another channel said it wisely: make a character for the campaign. Don't try to find a campaign for a particular character.
i see :/ i didn't mean to put more work on anyone i just thought it'd be fun to play as, its the main reason i got into dnd sense mimics are mainly known to originate from dnd
Homebrew channel would be a good place for more in depth review, but I do wanna mention as a DM I'd be unlikely to accept this race myself in my games either 😅
could i get your input on why? is there something specific about it?
Sure it probably will be fun to play! But I'd focus first on learning the core game rules and mechanics and playing "vanilla" D&D so when you start asking to use homebrew, you yourself will have a better understanding of what homebrew may be better balanced/appropriate than others.
that conversation should take place in the #homebrew channel
Sorry thats my fault
Feel free to share that homebrew link in #homebrew and get folks opinions on it. Make sure when sharing links to explain what the link is and what kind of feedback you're looking for.
i understand that i've played normal races and had fun doing so, and was super excited to try out plasmoids but the only unique thing to them was mainly Amorphous which is cool i guess expect a bit more though
Hello. I recommend checking this out.
Oks thanks you
Some people like to alter the official lore for their creative needs. For example, plasmoids reproduce asexually but I have met someone with a plasmoid character who had the same needs as a human or elf.
Okok thank you
Sadly allot of gms don’t allow homebrew options due to them being unbalanced or not fitting. This is why it’s best to stick to officially published creatures and or what’s offered as pc options from wizards.
Fixating on one idea is shooting yourself in the foot hard.
Mimics arnt ment to be player options that same goes for any werecreatures
Ello
it's not that we hate homebrew, i work a lot of homebrew into my campaigns, but usually i like to confer with my other dm friends and talk about how to better balance things out a bit. if i can't figure it out by myself i chat with one of my friends and we play around with it and figure it out. i will say that working yourself into a campaign as a mimic seems tricky and i personally don't know off the top of my head how i would get that to work
i've played a few one shots and one campaign with it, it was pretty fun
i wasn't killing things in 1 or 2 hits, my last one shot i played as a mimic taking the shape of a Stuffed animal like ted and played it as a rougue
So basicly Threadbear with less zombies

Even “reflavouring” can result in more work as a DM, and a lot of DM’s might be trying to filter out players that create elaborate backstories that hook into the campaign at multiple points.
Because thats a lot of work. I allow it at my table but it needs to be respected.
i'm typically pretty open to it but it just can't let homebrew take precedent over themes. i designed a spirit medium feat for one of my players for example, but having a mimic pc is so wacky that it could detract from the particular feel of a campaign
so yeah, make your character for a particular campaign, not the other way around
Hey folks - let's keep the channel clear for new to D&D folks to help get their questions answered. Please take this homebrew/DM chatter to more appropriate channels. Thanks!
New to D&D. I would like to get into a community if possible. If not a one shot would be great.
ive never played a full dnd session and would like to get started, how do i get started and get involved
I recommend checking this out.
Hey, id recommend looking in #find-a-game and make a post
New to the game. Looking for players
See the message above
I don't know how to make campaigns
I'm new and I love d and d
I love everything about d and d
Then I recommend checking the message I have replied to.
I don't even know how the game works. Need someone to teach me
The message I have replied to in the beginning should help you both.
Yup read this and you have a good startingpoint
this one ?
Yes.
Does anyone want to play
Press and I have already directed you to the places you should check out first.
#find-a-game follow the instructions here, that way you will get better responses and it will be done in the appropriate channels
Okay
Hi everyone
I know I already daid hi here before but I just wanna say hi again since I'm relearning how to play dnd
Welcome back.
Welcome. I recommend reading this if you're not doing that already.
Hello everyone!!!! I've been playing with my friends for about a year, and I'm just starting to try playing with people online. Is there anything I should know as a major difference?
Only that some of the requirements as far as gear can be different
You may use what's called a "virtual tabletop" (VTT), digital dice, digital character sheets etc
yeah i've been using dnd beyond
A good microphone can be really useful, and sometimes the ettiquette as far as cross talk can be a little different
mhm yeah thanks
hey everyone, just joined, how are y'all doin?
Heya, fáilte, welcome to the server.
Doing fine. Hope you are too. Welcome aboard.
Doin good, just looking for a group to join, where can i find one?
I'd recommend reading #find-a-game really carefully.
aight on it
Hello
I'd like to know the basics about DND rules
And if I need to draw and creat my own character to play DND with you guys
To this, yes, you'd normally make your own character. Art is honestly optional.

- [How does it work?](#learn-to-play message)

You don't need art. As for learning the basics... Honestly, your best option is just reading the basic rules
As to this, check the post just above for many helpful links and videos.
this, along with maybe a one-shot or a friendly DM works great for new players
So, how do I get a character then? Does the DND master give us ones? Are there templates?
yes, normally you create your own, some apps can help like DND beyond
but the DM can give you one in certain cases
Take a look at this for a quick overview of the classes: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
See what sounds fun.
Okay, I'll be looking into that, thanks
lol seems quite hard to find i group for the right time lvl to help me get into dnd.
The struggle is real
yup lol
It can take some time to find a group. #find-a-game can help. There's also the D&D Beyond forums, LFG on Reddit, find a game on Roll20 - many options out there.
Where and how can I find a beginner-friendly group?? Or is it just random
You can check the group description. They will sometimes say how beginner-friendly they are.
If they don't say, it's likely that some amount of knowledge will be assumed, but it's not for certain.
Hey! me and my friends are looking into starting a session for the first time. they asked that i be the dungeon master and set up the game, im looking for advice on where to start?
DMing is a lot of fun. I've got my start with this playlist here, it's very helpful (Matt Colvilles Running the Game series): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
where can i make a character paper thing
You can do it by hand with the basic rules and this sheet:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Or you can use a character builder, such as the one on DDBeyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
ooo can i join that game pray chance new to dnd and ready to play.
up to you really
I'm not a DM, but my advice is think like a chess grandmaster. In other words, the players might try to alter the intended story path, so think of alternate endings or alternate ways the story can go.
i tend to just go with the flow since i belve changeing how the dm wrote the story is rude i will only intervene if the story get to uncomfortable
Sadly finding a group is the hard part ironically
Have you read the 2024 DMG? Not sarcastic, the advice in it is honestly pretty brilliant for new DM’s.
I’d go as far as to say it’s built with your exact situation in mind
This is why you have session zero
do base stats change with race even when all the other things are the same?
Ditto the Matt Colville playlist, the Free Rules section on being the DM (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/the-basics), and I'd also recommend this guide (https://howtogm.guide/).
That should be plenty to get you started. You don't need to be an expert DM in order to be running your first game.
2014 yes, 2024: no

Dang that app is fast!
Indeed, and I'm glad the links are working and it's free !
You also gave the free basic rules
I am a very very new player who has barely any knowledge in rules, character making and overall trying to have my first ever game. The only website that I am available is a freaking roll20 acc. So if I need anything to prep, pls tell me!
I am free for any advices!
Honestly the best prep you can do first is talking with your dm to make sure you’re on the same page about what’s good and what they expect from you at the table. Don’t worry too much about learning the very specific rules, just make sure you know how basic mechanics work and others will help along the way!
Hi! I am a new player who is still learning and researching rules, lore, character-making, and all that fun stuff. Hello! I am new to DnD and curious to know what resources I can look into. I normally would start as a player but I actually want to be a DM with some home brew. Any advice?
My honest advice even though you might not like it is to start as a player. To be a good DM you need to have an understanding of the game mechanics and how good DM’ing works, and that can only really be achieved by having played it properly first
To be more specific, to have good game balance you need to understand how the player side works
Or counter point DM if you want to DM you don’t need a vast knowledge of the rules to run a game
Its definitely possible to start as a DM. Maybe people have done it. It takes quite a bit of extra work, compared to starting as a player, but its not impossible by any stretch of the imagination
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure have a look at this it’s a great little adventure to teach both players and DMs
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The bot post above has some great information for starting out as a DM
I’d avoid homebrew though until you learn the game a bit first
Gotcha! Thank you everyone!
even if you don’t run this it has loads of hints and tips for DMs on how to run things
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there are some cheat sheets available here to to help out
Well, this advice depends on what you mean by homebrew, because a lot of newcomers use that term much differently than veterans do. If you just mean that you want to create your own setting and characters instead of using a prewritten adventure, that's perfectly fine. If you mean that you want to introduce new monsters or magic items or player options, then I would recommend that you stick to the books only for those things until you become more expirienced as a DM
Good point well put 🫡
It’s possible, I just personally wouldn’t recommend it. It’s not possible to know what qualifies as challenging or vice versa when you have no knowledge of how the player side works as a standard of comparison.
Right now I guess if it’s homebrew is just my own world. I eventually want to homebrew a race into it but I want to understand the player side and the mechanics before doing that it’s just gonna stress me out if I do.
Hi
The DMG has guidelines that new DMs can follow to make sure their combats are the correct challenge level, and you can either directly use or compare your own encounters to the encounters found in published adventures, to help get an understanding of combat and challenge levels, even without being a player first
welcome!
I just started playing so I don’t know much 😊

Thats a great start. If you want to have other people review those character sheets, you can post a link to them in the #character-discussion channel
text. This server does not have any voice channels
Ok
True, the onboarding experience for DM’s has improved drastically with the new rulebooks. I think knowing how the classes and their movesets work is important for good encounter design though.
It’s basically a game design role, so.. having good knowledge of the game doesn’t hurt
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely agree with you that it makes the whole process easier if you start as a player than transition into a DM. But if someone comes to this game solely with the desire to be a DM and being a player does not interest them, its not a mandatory step.
I’m looking for a dnd to join where do go to look
Read #find-a-game carefully (also user iamrazorwing has some great suggestions linked to in their bio)
Update: my lgs finally found more players we are starting the campaign late March
I started with a starter box no PHB or DMG and had many fun sessions running as a DM having never played, many other people have done this too
Can someone help me with the numbers in abilities? I did alot in dnd beyond character creator and most of my abilities are uh, low and modifiers are -1
I do not know how to do numbers in abilities😅
No biased numbers exist or...
I'd suggest using standard array as most tables will accept that
Kk
idk why but im tempted to play an eldrich knight in the campaign but idk yet ive got til late march
Plus I won't know until I roll stats
Wait uh, how do roll for modifiers...
Ohhhh
12 is a +1 and 14 would be a +2
Thats cool
tldr: increment on even numbers, unless below 10 than increment on odd
Im now in the equipment section... is there a limit to what I should bring?
Your class specifies your starting equipment options.
Depends on how characters are rolled, Starter equipment is the way to go
starting gold is not
Does weight matter?
Yep.
Here's the info on carrying capacity: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#CarryingCapacity
I wonder if I am allowed to add items especially a weapon for my level 1 weapon mastery
Yes you should be able to get weapons that match your masteries from the starting equipment
But for other trinkets,
If you're going outside the rules—and even if you aren't—it's worth asking your DM. If you don't have a DM, the character you're making is for practice and so your choices don't ultimately matter a ton beyond teaching you what choices to make and how.
Good Afternoon Everyone, new to the server. I’ve recently been interested to get into Dungeon and Dragons. I want to know how to start get into to it and how could I find people to play with?
Okay one last question and I am dont with my character!
I just need to know how much gp I need (yeah its simple haha...)
The gold you get is listed in the same spots your starting equipment is listed: in your background and in your class description

The best place to start is with the free basic rules! They can be found in the post above.
If you have any specific questions as you're reading through, you're welcome to ask them here.
After you've got an understanding of the rules, you can check #find-a-game to see how to get your search for a group started on this server.
Should I buy the players hand book 2024 ?
Create a character?
I'd recommend starting with the free rules (see [bot message here](#dnd-newcomers message) - has a link to the free rules)
Then if you like the game well enough, the players handbook is a good book to get.
The free rules will help you don’t need to buy anything
looking for someone that can review my proposed character sheet and background, thanks in advance!
Post it in #character-discussion!
Welcome!
Thanks everyone
