Hello all. Im here to try and lean to play D&D. This will be my 2nd attempt to lean to play. When I tried to play last I went into my local shop on the night they had D&D picked up the 2014 PHB. tried to make a character. Told the DM that I would like to take part. No one at the table seem to want to teach a new player how to play D&D. I did not fell welcome. I did not go back. I have moved to a new town. The local shop here is going to start AL one shots. 2 nights a week. I am going to go take part. I alos would like to find a long turm campain to take part in. I do have a 2024 PHB. I hope it works out this time. I have played 40k and other TTS games.
That does suck, but thankfully there are a bunch of ways to get into the hobby. Hopefully this second attempt goes better! #learn-to-play is maybe worth perusing for a start.
Thank you I will start there
Theoretically speaking, as a wizard wielding a quarter staff, am I only limited to using the spells I have prepared or can I just fire magic blast
Firebolt is a cantrip you can cast an unlimited number of times. Any prepared level spell can be used as long as you have a spell slot of that level available.
Ohhhh ok thank u
whats up

Hello! You can call me Idriss! I've done a lot of informal/text-based roleplay online and have been meaning to get into DnD properly :3
Hello everyone
I have character I’ve had for awhile (backstories at least lol) but I’ve never been able to join a game, hope I can find some games in here QAQ

Take a look over the rules, learn a bit about ability scores and skills. Look at the options in the Free Rules for classes and species, start putting something together. There are videos linked above too. #character-discussion can help you get set up.
Then check out #find-a-game to start looking for a game.
Question
Does lucky feat
Make you able to roll a 40? Or does it just reroll basically
Reroll
in 2014 you can reroll after seeing the first roll. In 2024 you have to declare it beforehand to give yourself advantage
Thanks mate
Anyone from India 🙂
I'm looking for a dm any know where I can find such a person
I have a party of 4 ready to play just need a dm
You can check #looking-for-dm
Thx appreciated
Is there anyone who would be able to assist me in making a character?
There aren't a lot of people who can provide 1 on 1 instructions but would probably be happy to answer any questions you have here
Have you read the basic rules on character creation?
On the server or in the book?
Book
Not in full. I’m just having trouble translating information from the book to the character sheet
What’s the general character you want to make? And do you have a DM yet
I don’t have a dm, just making a character for fun. And he’s a Teifling sorcerer
https://youtu.be/CeIJKkpDvBY?si=asZZRP0g8pqr7vzf here’s how to make a basic one on dnd beyond
https://youtu.be/iQE4h505yL0?si=YWshE87GuLxsxUOB this one isn’t to bad
If you get stuck just ask here
Do I put my hit dice on the spent or max line?
You'd put your total hitpoints there
But you can definitely note what your hit dice is on your sheet if you want
There’s a slot for hit points and hit dice.
Oh yes, you'd put it there yea
Put it where
Total would be the number of hit dice you have which is equal to your level. So in Total, you'd put the max number you have and then in hit dice, you'd put the dice you use for your hit points. For example a level 3 wizard would have 3 hit dice total and would have a d6 in that slot.
Ah okay, I was refering to the 2014 sheet. Spent would be how many you have used and max would be the total number you have.
Where in the book does it tell me my hit points?
Nevermind, found it
And for things like intelligence i just roll a d 20?
For my stats score
Can I join
Point buy?
I am a changling Druid
Dude wrong channel
To use this server to find a group to play with, check #find-a-game
Okay
Found it in book. Thank you.
Also in armer training, in the book it says none but on the sheet the lowest is light. Do I fill that in or just not fill in anything?
Sorcerer
Still deciding a subclass but I know my character is ice based.
Good to know.
They just use a lot of ice spells
I’ll find things that are close enough.
Hey would you be free to voice chat to help me with this easier?
Np diddnt expect to, thanks though
Hey guys. I'm new to DnD and I tried watching youtube videos to make my first character sheet...and it's very overwhelming lol.
Could someone take a look at it and tell me if the character looks fine?
Hello everyone. I've played dnd for about 6 years now and one of my groups is going on a break for a while. I'd like to see if there's a way I could post about looking for another but I'm a bit confused on how too. Can anyone help?
Thanks 🙂
Thank you so much
I can't say i'm new precisely but it's been months since i've played
@sage moth Try not to take one type of spell as youll be shooting yourself in the foot, Go for variety isntead of one spesific element. There are creatures who are immune/resistant to cold damage
I just needed to check ac is armor class right
yes AC stands for armor class
Can someone help me under stand the sorcerer features table in the 2024 book? Specifically the spell slots part?
what exactly do you need to have clarified?
the table shows the number of spell slots you have at every class level and what level the slots are
At the top it goes 1-9 and for each level it’s got multiple numbers. Lv 1 is 2 in column 1 and lv 3 is 4 in column 1 and 2 in column 2. I don’t get it.
okay so if your character is level 3, you got 4 level 1 slots and 2 level 2 slots
for example
at level 5, your sorcerer would have 4 L1 slots, 3 L2 slots and 2 L3 slots
So on my prepared spells box I would write down 2 empty level 1 spells until I choose which spells I have ?
you dont prepare a spell for a specific slot.
if you have 3 level 1 spells for example, you can cast the same spell multiple times, or cast different spells etc
think of it like the slots are currency, and the spells prepared are a menu
Wait I just saw the spell slots box, my pencil was covering it. Do I mark two level one stars?
you have a level 1 character I assume?
Yes
so you got 2 L1 slots, and have 2 spells you know.
Also quick question. Would you be willing to move to vc to help this go quicker?
sorry, I am only confortable to help here
That’s fine. So would I write down 2 on the line or fill in two stars next to it?
Nvm, I figured it out
Before you go, what’s passive perception?
Its how likely you spot someone without actively looking for them
10 + perception bonus
For all classes and species?
basically its used if you arent actively searching for something, so see if you notice it
yes, your bonus might change based on class or species features, but the calculation is always the same
And perception bonus is just wisdom modifier?
other things can add to that, but its based on wisdom.
it can be more if you are proficient in perception for example
I am, so that’s plus 2?
At levels 1-4, yep
That’s good. My wisdom modifier was 0!
then your passive perception should be 12
Also, I have a magic staff. Does that count as a weapon or tool. And if tool can I count it as a club if I run out of spells?
Sorcerer
you mean your spell focus?
It’s an inherited item.
It isn't really a 'tool'. Tools are stuff like cooking utensils and thieve's tools.
Your staff is what is called an arcane focus.
And yeah, you can use it as a weapon too, to hit someone with. The stats would be equal to a quarterstaff.
Do I wait to write my subclass until I’m level 3 or do I choose now?
You only get it at level 3. But you can note down what you want to take at that level and already roleplay in that direction.
Any suggestions? I can’t decide. Whatever has some ice possibilities would be best.
I'd pick the one you like the look and sound of most. And any subclass has some spells that involve ice, like Ray of Frost, for example.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618930-ray-of-frost
And some spells, like Chromatic Orb, let you pick cold damage when you cast them.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618966-chromatic-orb
draconic sorcerer can go ice specialist, sort of
Which class has ray of frost? I diddnt see it in the charts?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618930-ray-of-frost sorc, wizard, artificer, sea druid
Oh uh, subclass for sorcerer
well all sorcerers can get ray of frost
Alright then that auto get with draconic sorcery’s chromatic orb is what I’ll go for. Thank you!
chromatic orb is also for all sorcerers
Whatever, dragons are cool
though draconic sorc gets it as their subclass spell, so you dont have to pick it up otherwise
At level 18 I’ll get a dragon companion. I’ll like that.
draconic sorc is a great choice, especially for beginners. you get better AC without using a spell on mage armorer, more HP and at level 6 you add extra damage to your choses elemental damage type
dragon wings at 14 and the dragon buddy at 18 are also great, yeah
I’m going to draw such a cute dragon!
Also am I allowed to post digital dnd art in the art channel?
as long as its not AI generated
Hi people
What page can I find the description for thaumaturgy cantrip?
Hello followers of the D20 dice
Thank you!
Do cantrips given from species take up class cantrip slots? I gain 2 from being a teifling and a sorcerer is given 4 slots. Would the 2 be apart of the 4?
No, they're separate
Thanks again!
On the sheet it has concentration, ritual, and required material for spell casting but in the book it’s verbal, somatic, and material. Which of the first two line up with each other?
Hey guys I’m really new to this my little sister asked me to play but I have a question
Can my race be a primordial otter
Like an otter made of water who’s been around since the beginning of time
You could be a Druid in the wild shape of an otter, but I’m not sure about the primordial part.
So I can’t be an intelligent otter
Like an actually playable character in otter form
You’ed be intelligent. You would just be in the shape of an otter.
There may be a species that could help you out in one of the spin off books.
So you can’t really play dnd with added races
You could homebrew something, but that's not generally recommended for new players
Thank you so much
As you saw spells can have components (verbal, somatic, material). Some spells have special material requirements. For example, for the spell Revivify, it's not enough to have a spellcasting focus as material component, you also need to have its specific material (a diamond worth 300+ GP, which the spell consumes).
This is the part that the sheet means when it says Required Material.
What about the others. Material was the same in book and sheet but the others are different
Some spells have effects that your character needs to concentrate on for them to continue. It will say in the spell if that's the case, like with Beast Sense. You'll see this noted in the Duration.
Beast Sense also happens to be a Ritual spell. You see it noted in the Casting Time. This means this spell can be cast without consuming a spell slot, but if it is cast this way, it takes 10 minutes longer than usual to cast.
So for a spell that has a verbal component, would I mark down C or R on the sheet?
These properties are separate from the components.
The sheet doesn't actually have a place for the normal components.
This is probably because you usually don't care about the normal components. They rarely come up.
There might be situations like: a spell has a verbal component, so anyone can then notice that your character is chanting some magical words. There it might play a role.
Thanks for clarifying
Sure. Spellcasting is a handful.

Hello.
I'm a newcomer to DnD 5. I also play with newbies.
I'm familiar with the universe though.
Since I wanted to start somewhere, I took the PHB from 2014. Then, I've discovered that 2024 got something new.
I'm now learning the PHB from 2024 and will start on a simple scenario found online.
Is the 2024 phb good for newbies ?
Also, stupid question : are the free rules adapted to 2024 edition ?
Yep. I think the 2024 version got more approachable.
There are free rules for 2024 too
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
We don't have a pdf for it yet (SRD) like we do for 2014.
Awesome!
Should I check "core rules" from 2014 to play with 2024 or not at all ?
The 2024 core rules replace the 2014 core rules, I'd broadly ignore the latter.
Some expansion books for 2014, like Xanathar's Guide and Tashas Cauldron can still provide additional value, though they are not necessary.
Can I ask stupids questions here ?
Like :
Two Cantrips. You learn two cantrips of your choice from the Wizard spell list. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this feat’s spells (choose when you select this feat).
What is a cantrip ?
That's what the channel is here for! Cantrips are level 0 spells. These are generally weaker than any level 1-9 spells, but they don't cost a spell slot to cast.
Niice
Also, I don't see more than human / elf / dwarf / halfing on the species panel when creating a character
Are there the only choices for species for now in 2024 ?
Those are the only free choices. If you want to access further content on D&D Beyond, you'll have to pay.
All the races in the 2024 phb are the following:
Aasimar, Dragonborn, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Goliath, Halfling, Human, Orc, Tiefling
And it's 2$ to create unlimited characters with all the species ?
Sounds good
No, the subscription doesn't grant access to more content, that's important to understand.
Oh ...
You'll have to buy the actual products on the marketplace to unlock options. The subscription gives you more character slots.
Then, how much it is to have a creation panel with the recents options and not only the free ones ?
A hero tier subscription give you:
- Unlimited character slots (vs the 6 you get with a free account)
- Ability to add other's published homebrew to your own collection
- Monthly subscriber perks
- Early access on preordered books
- Early access to new tools DnDBeyond creates
To access materials/character options from books, you have to buy the book on DnDBeyond or be part of a DnDbeyond campaign that has content sharing enabled.
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Oh I see. So if I want to use the auto-create character with Dnd calculating everything for me, I need to buy the book.
If you want to have more options available, yes. Although I think DDB still has the 2014/ Basic Rules available still, that has a greater range of free species than 2024.
So
I guess that the best was to begin a newbie campaign of 1 - 2 sessions with my friends
If DnD is fun, we'll gather up our purses to buy an online version and access all we need on the website
Though we are 1 DM and 3 players ; is this ok ?
(We don't have much friends lmao)
Yeah - 1 DM and 3 players is a good size
And the use of maps is limitated by DM subscription ?
DnDBeyond Maps requires an active Master Tier subscription and has a known limitation with content sharing - the DM has to own the content themselves to be able to use it on the map/encounter (e.g. they have to own the book with that monster to be able to put the monster token on the map and to use that monster in the encounter tool).
But you could use a tool like Owlbear.rodeo for maps and tokens instead.
If I want to create my campaign and use map / monsters, I need to :
- buy PHB 2024
- buy monster manual 2024
- buy DM sub ?
Or I can just buy PHB 2024 to creates our characters and calculate automatically all the needings
And then use owlbear ?
If you want the integrated DnDBeyond tools you would need:
- 1 Master Tier subscription for the DM to access DnDBeyond Maps
- PHB 2024
- Monster Manual 2024 (bought by DM so they can use the tokens in Maps)
For an alternative you could get:
- 1 Master Tier subscription to enable content sharing
- PHB 2024 for character options
- Use Owlbear.rodeo for maps and displaying tokens (does not include integrated combat encounter tool like DnDBeyond Maps)
I honestly suggest starting with the free rules first and seeing if you like the game before investing in books.
How does maps work
Battlemaps are overhead grid representations of the local area you’re in. Each square represents a 5’ x 5’ area. Usually there will be a clear indicator if you can’t move somewhere, like a wall, but sometimes the DM/players will need to use common sense (e.g. if you’re playing in a field and there’s a raised cliffside right next to you)
A DM might also use other kinds of maps like world maps, which work like regular maps, mostly for narrative information than for mechanical interaction
I meant like dnd beyond maps feature. Is it good enough to replace roll20 as vtt?
From what I have heard DDB Maps is a fine alternative especially for convenience.
I would look around in the chat search function for more reviews, otherwise it’d be a good question for #dnd-discussion
Is any dungeon masters located on the Wirral that we could ask a few questions to please
If I don't have a lot of money and that I don't want to use map on owl
are there some solutions ?
There are many folks on the webs who offer free and cheap maps that you can get and use on Owlbear.rodeo or other Virtual Tabletop tools
Why does a DMs location matter?
You can just ask your questions and people who can answer, will

When you make a sheet on behind you are using 5e it’s under clllections
Thank you

Hey guys, I've been playing for 3 years but I struggle making good backstories and really playing into my character RP wise, I'm pretty social just shy when it comes to DnD, any suggestions?
often the simplest backstory can lead for great rp protental
Can someone explain how feats are used in a very simple way?
I relate to this so much! I've just recently really committed to playing more DnD because over the years it's been really hard to spend enough time with a character to let their backstory develop. My new tactic has been to accept that the first couple of games will be more about really honing in on how what the character excels at and doing some poking around the species, background, a geography histories I've chosen. What I'm finding is little quirks (for example, my cleric exclaming "Praise Tymora!") are really starting to blossom into character traits. I guess my suggestion would be "let it start real small."
Alright cool, thank you, I'll start with the little things first
Feats are like little building pieces that you can add to your character. Typically, you can pick a feat to add to your character at level 4, and further levels depending on your class. You also get an origin feat as part of your background.
Feats do many different things, so it's probably best to have a look at some of them:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/feats#FeatDescriptions
And by ‘feats can only be taken once’ that means you can only add it to your character once?
Yep
It all makes sense now! Thank you!

Skills are things like perception?
Yep
I play with 3 friends.
If I buy the manual on my account. Can they build a character with the possibilities owned by my manual ? (like more species)
A skill is a category of action that decides if you get a bonus to checks made when performing that action
Only if one of you has a Master Tier subscription--this enables content sharing within a campaign, allowing you to share books
Ok ok
When skilled says I have proficiency in any combination of 3 skills or tools of my choice, can I choose both skills and tools, or just one group?
I believe it's skills and tools, not either 3 skills OR 3 tools.
I does say ‘or’ though
That just means you can pick either to my knowledge
#dnd-rules would probably give you a more definitive answer, assuming there is one.
it's both. let's not be silly
My current long-term characters are a changeling moon druid, a thri-kreen lore bard, and a warforged masks bard (from a third-party book).
I haven't joined a group yet but I think I'm going to be a dragon born paladin
Nice, but truthfully, it's hard to make a bad choice!
I'd say so. Any species/class combo works just fine, and while not all subclasses are equal, there are more viable choices than you'll likely ever have the chance to play.
So if I buy the book
AND the DM subscription
My friends can create characters with all the possibilities of having a book ?
Nice quick question I'm new to this do you have a dnd group I chould join to play with
I don't, but we have channels on the server to find groups.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.

You need the digital book.
You can also homebrew the things and quite literally write your own character sheet on DND beyond but that's hugely impractical
hey guys, i am trying to figure out what would be the best way to add my rage bonus to my roll in D&D Beyond, i don't think they have the function to automatically add it to my roll via a button tick or something.
But if one person in a campaign has a book and a master subscription, everyone in the campaign can use all their stuff
Not sure if #ddb-support could help. I know folks have made workarounds.
maybe, i am still confused what even the rage does mathematically
Are you playing 2014 or 2024?
don't tell me they have changed it....
You go on features and traits.
Click on rage.
You'll get a drop down that says "activate"
oh really ? let me check that, thanks
As for what Rage does mathematically, here's the bit from 2024:
Rage Damage. When you make an attack using Strength—with either a weapon or an Unarmed Strike—and deal damage to the target, you gain a bonus to the damage that increases as you gain levels as a Barbarian, as shown in the Rage Damage column of the Barbarian Features table.
So if you hit with a 1d8 weapon, for example, you add +2 to the total, even after including your STR modifier. Let's say you roll a 5 on the die and your mod is +3, the total would be 10.
hmmm in features and traits i see the rage option but if i tick it it simply keeps track of how many times i have used it but doesn't add any modifiers to my rolls. i don't see anything that would be "activate"
That's why I was like "If I buy the book"
I mean, if I buy the 2024 ed. digital PHB, and a sub, will my friend be able to create a race available with the book ?
Also, I'm pretty confuse with the reading of a stat block for like a zombie
Have you seen the stat block overview? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/how-to-use-a-monster#StatBlockOverview
niiice
It's more that I wasn't sure if you thought like the physical book would come with a "also get me online" type code. Cos they don't. 😦
Yep digital book and a sub, add your friend to your campaign, they can use everything.
Oh yeah, that's because I play face to face with my friends
But the website is so much useful because everything is on the character sheet and all the calculations are almost auto
We'll start with the first campaign and see if it's fun enough to buy the second
It's awkward without being able to post an image. But if you click on the body of text.
Rage "you can take a bonus action to yada yada yada" and the tickboxes.
Just click rage, it pops out an extra box on the right of the screen with more details of what rage actually does. And then you might have to scroll down, because it's at the bottom of that pop out box
i just realized it is because i have a 2014 barbarian
i think the feature you are describing isn't available for 2014 i was told
if i was playing on paper i would just count it but since everything is automatically done when playing online, i am certain i will forget to add this kind of bonus. thanks though, i'll look around to see what would be the best work around
You still get extra damage, the option is probably hidden somewhere unintuitive.
I know my friend just customises his great axe with a +2 damage every time he rages.
Does anyone have any recommendations for races and classes in a first time serious dnd run. The most common races are Dragonborns, halflings, humans, half orcs, dwarves, and half elves.
You can't really make a bad choice as any species can be any class. Spellcasting adds a lot more complexity, but if you're more excited to play a magic type, go for it!
I was thinking a Dragonborn paladin cause it sounds cool lol
Popular choice.
depending on your play style, i recommend fighter, barbarian or paladin. They are simpler to manage when starting cause less game mechanic to think at once. i personally love playing dwarf barbarian because they deal a lot of punch and have good health.
Very cool choice
Duplicate weapons in your inventory so you have them
Greataxe
Greataxe (raging) or something
I couldn't see it anywhere obvious for a 2014 barbarian either
the support says it is not a feature for 2014 so yeah, i'll do the duplicating thing
honestly this method that was sent to me is very good https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/76575-how-to-homebrew-your-own-buff-system#c4
is there an age requirement in this discord?
Is anyone here familiar enough with Blade Breaker Fighter to help me out in #third-party…
Hey i have never played d&d. I have seen few games and want to try it out. I don't know how to proceed with it. Should I just play or look into its rules?

At the very least, you should read the free basic rules before looking for a game so you have an understanding of how it works. There's a link in the bot post above along with some videos. Feel free to ask any questions you might have here 🙂
Okay thanks
any season dm willing to hear me out on a issue i have
Hey do any of the handbooks have bolas in them?
D&D does not have a bola weapon type but you could take an exisitng weapon and work with your DM to flavor it as a bola
I feel like they would be more of a trap item, since there used to throw and wrap around peoples legs.
what about ability checks like suvival or strenge base ones
Proficiency Bonus phb 2024 can only use once per day for them? or not i can use my Proficiency Bonus to them as long as i needed per day
ok i thing i was confuse but no part of Proficiency Bonus i read is mention once per day thank
i get it
hey how is everyone
what chat would i go too if i am looking for a group too play with
dTo claim Hold Back the Dead do I need to buy it for 0.00 ?
Or can I just claim it somewhere ?
Ty
How much classes / species / other things does buying the PHB 2024 will unlock for me on DnDbeyond ?
(So I can figure out if it's worth the 💰 )

it seems a little odd, i have never seen a DM playing a character as well.
DM's run everything else - trying to run a player character at the same time is challenging and can cause other game-breaking problems (DM's character stealing the show, solving all the problems, pushing the party into doing things their way)
Such characters are often referred to as DMPCs and as noted... can be problematic.
But that's more of a #dm-discussion topic.
Which edition do you recommend for new players?
The current edition, 5th edition, would be the one I would suggest for new-to D&D folks - and within that I'd say start learning the 2024 updates as they are much more approachable IMO.
The 2014 rules are fine and still useable (and often used) but if you had to pick one to focus on... I'd suggest the 2024 updates.
2024 is more approachable but 2014 has more sources and a lot of people prefer 2014 rules. They are both compatible with each other for the most part, like using 2014 subclasses with 2024 classes
Paladins are half-casters, they progress their magic half as fast as Wizards, Clerics, Bards, Sorcerers and Warlocks. Other half-casters (other than Paladin) are Artificers, Rangers, Eldritch Knight Fighters and Arcane Trickster Rogues. I might be missing some subclasses but those last two are the most prevalent.
You don't really need to worry about your spells too much as a Paladin. A lot of your spells are supportive and boost your party rather than typically relying on stats like full casters do to deal heavy damage or control.
There are plenty of spells which are great to take depending on the setting or RP, so definitely consider what you want to bring for that type of stuff.
Some good combat-based 1st-Level spells to look out for are:
Bless - Lets you choose some allies including yourself to buff with higher attack chance and higher saving throws by rolling a 1d4 for each thing respectively.
Command - Lets you command an enemy that fails their saving throw to do their bidding like dropping their weapon, falling prone, running away, approaching you, stopping them from moving or if your DM lets you, you can come up with your own one-word command.
Cure Wounds - A simple close-range healing spell, may not be worth taking since Paladins do have Lay on Hands to give healing to allies.
Wrathful Smite - An attack that deals extra damage and forces enemies to run away if they fail the Wisdom saving throw.
Shield of Faith - A bonus action spell that gives you or an ally an extra +2 AC which you can use with a dodge action to become even harder to hit.
Protection from Evil and Good - This spell is very powerful against certain enemy types, definitely worth picking up if you think or know you are going to fight one of the creature types in the near future.
When you can take 2nd-Level spells, I highly recommend Aid. Very strong and popular spells that boosts 3 creatures maximum HP for 8 hours.
A handy tip for some of your spells is that when you get an enemy to fail a save against a spell that causes Frightened it can proc Attacks of Opportunity, which lets anyone within melee range of the fleeing target use their reaction to take a chance at hitting them.
You can use your spells that cause Frightened when an enemy is surrounded by multiple people to basically get free attacks for multiple allies within reach, if not at least yourself.

what's up everyone 🤙🏼
Hi, I'm new to D&D. I have roleplayed in the past and I called it A&D because the roleplay was based on the war between Angels and Demons. However, I decided to make a character on the D&Dbeyond app.
Let's see where this goes.
so since chronurgy is unavailable, the next closest choice would be divination yes?
id like to know if the d&d games are in voice chat only or normal chat like typing?
I think it depends on the preference of the players and the DM.
ok but do you know how to know?
The posts I've read sometimes say voice chat and others have said over text.
thanks
Whoa I
Thanks!
So for some reason I keep getting time outs. Help? I'm not doing anything ;-;
Most likely you keep breaking a rule #rules
I'd recommend asking in #moderator-support if you're unsure which
I'm not sure
With
Bless - Lets you choose some allies including yourself to buff with higher attack chance and higher saving throws by rolling a 1d4 for each thing respectively.
What is the order to roll the dices ? (Like A does 1d20, then add 1d4)
And the buff is one turn and can't be used until rest ?
Add 1d4 to every attack and saving throw you make
Yes, I've read it ; but I don't know the order of throwing
The order doesn't matter for Bless
The target benefiting from Bless needs to decide to add the d4 before they know if the roll succeeds or fails
Also there's no reason not to add the d4 to every roll; there's no penalty for rolling too well
Whenever you're adding two or more dice rolls together, there's no concept of what order you roll the dice in. You just roll them all and add the results up
Thanks sir
Any questions? Ive been playing for about 5 years
Nothing much just wanted to find any DND sessions lying around because my irl friends are too busy playing dnd 😭

Hello guys! Pretty damn new around here. Honestly, barely know anything about D&D, but I have grown excited to learn, ngl! Nice to meet everyone.
@last grove BM is battle master, which is a subclass for fighter
which, i think fits your thing best
hmm,a dex based battle master?
i mean, your idea is mainly a flavour problem, not anything else, just flavour it as it
so in your case, a waist mounted dagger
that plus wristblade
aight back to homebrew
thank you so much!!
Good timezones, people.
What basics are there to learn about D&D and should I get a D&D starter book?
say you wanna do a thing to the dm, dm asks to roll to check if you can do it, you roll dice and add your stats to the number, depending on how high the number is how well you succeed/fail
you dont have to get the players handbook theres tons of online resources but it is a fun read and the best source of knowledge for players
Alright, I see. Cheers.

what are "how your group play", words like "Foundry", "D&D beyond,Possibly Owlbear." "dndbeyond for sheets"
Those are all different platforms people can use for playing and character sheets online
Oouuhh, ¿seriously?
Foundry and Owlbear Rodeo are both virtual tabletops while D&D Beyond can be used to make characters
how foundry and O.Rodeo works?
So it's telling you how they play and how they expect you to make characters
Any virtual tabletop is a website where the DM can show you maps and tokens and players can move their characters around. How fancy they are otherwise varies/roll dice
Owlbear is one of the simplest while Foundry has a lot more features
When i search a session to play, ¿what i should have on count?, my experience were based on a one-shot i had a year ago, where they handed me a sheet, etc. how do i know when a #looking-for-players is accepting begginers¿
If they don't say, you can ask
Alright, Thank you. I don't think i got anymore questions for today.
You don't need to italicise all your text, it makes it difficult to read
Got me the dungeon master guide 2024!!! I got the old one but this one explain more and for some reason it make things a lot of sense. I over think on the other book.
That was the point of it. They redesigned it to make it more useful.
Sorry, i am used to it.

Thanks, went through some of the books like the PHB and the new one and the Free rule book on DnD beyond. currently going through the new Monster book since a store near me was selling in early this weekend
Now I really just need to grab the courage to join an actual game online/IRL
That's awesome. Good luck finding a game 🙂
Is there a way for wild magic sorcerers to always use wild magic surge?
Kind of. You can do the following rotation:
- Cast an attack cantrip or make an attack roll using something else > use Tides of Chaos to gain advantage on the attack roll.
- Cast a sorcerer spell with a spell slot > since you used Tides of Chaos, it will automatically trigger a surge and recharge Tides of Chaos
- Repeat until you're out of spell slots
Oh thanks

DnD is pretty simple but at the same time, I have no one to play with, and I am still kind of slow when it comes to learning things, so I think I will have to pick it up some other time in life
@harsh fjord has a fantastic resource in their bio on finding a group. If you're playing online, time frame doesn't matter. And lots of groups will mention they're newbie-friendly.
Hello everyone, I hope you can help with with some questions.
I created a Lunar Socerer (no, I won't change to draconic, roleplaying reasons).
At level 1, I have Dex at 16, Con at 16 and Cha at 19
I was thinking of taking Fey touched at level 4.
Now, after checking my options I was wondering if, 18 Dex and 18 Cha at level 1, with ASI on Cha at level 4 would be better.
Thoughts?
Sounds like a question better suited for #character-discussion
hi i was wondering if i could create a wood woad character?
For anything not official (and even with official options) it’s best to check with your DM
not directly with official rules.
you might be able to reflavor some other species option, with DM input
or your DM will allow you some homebrew
player characters and monsters are built very differently. If you opt for a potential homebrew option, then that statblock might be a starting point I guess
I’d recommend if you’re new to D&D to start with official options first and play the game with the standard rules
well im very new to the game and have not made any homebrew but do you think i could find one on the internet?
There is no end of homebrew on the internet. But whether a DM or table/group will allow you to use it at their games is a whole different question
I second the recommendation that you get use to the official stuff first before diving into homebrew
Then work with your DM to identify something that will work well and is balanced for the kind of D&D game you’re playing
thanks for the help!
Newcomer here, made a post saying searching for DM, no P2P, only invites I get are P2P 🤔 😅

Can someone explain me what all of the D&D classes do? I'm new and I want to know what suits me!
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
Various descriptions of classes: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Fifth Edition (5e) Classes. A comprehensive list of all official character classes for Fifth Edition.
Thanks!
Hello,
I am new to dnd, have had 2 sessions with a group of friends where we are all basically new to dnd. I want to try to create a subclass for my fighter that is basically like a fighter that has fire strengths. I am trying to figure out the homebrew subclass or trying to find a subclass taht fits waht I am trying to do. Can anyone direct me to figure out how to do this the best way? (sorry in advance if this is the wrong channel for this)
do attack focus classes always do more damage than a full spellcastar? in all the campaings I am playing the fighter like classes can hit multiple times dealing a huge amount of damage and the spellcaster can cast only one spell per turn, spending a spell slot and doing a fraction of what the other inflicted. I know DnD is not all damage and combat but I´m doubting the strength of wizards, warlocks, druids and sorcerers. What am I doing wrong?
Most people tend to think the opposite, at least at higher levels
There are ways to cast more than 1 spell a turn with cantrips/bonus action spells and generally speaking, a single spell can be quite effective depending on what it is.
Do you have examples of the kind of spells that are being cast? Or if they're built for other things like support?
wish there were a campaign that did sessions every night or every other day im bored 🫠
As a DM that sounds terrifying
😭 im so sorry
just impatience also when i try to join campaigns they say i lack experience so 😭 im trying my best to look for experience
wait is that why people pay for sessions?
It can be the quickest way to find a game
I am having trouble understanding this sheet
how do you fill it out? does the stats change depending on the class you choose?
Your starting stats are dependent on the method you use to generate them. For a newbie I recommend Standard Array or Point Buy
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
You will have more opportunities to increase your stats when you choose your background (class-independent) and when you reach certain class levels (class-dependent). Though if you're just making a level 1 character I wouldn't worry too much about the latter for now.
Oh ok! Thank you
so I don't fill up stats is what your saying?
that doesnt make much sense
No, you use one of the 3 methods in the Free Rules to generate your beginning stats (Standard Array, Point Buy, Rolling). Your background will give you additional stat increases.
When you reach certain class levels you will have more opportunities to increase your ability scores, but that part specifically is a little far ahead for a newbie (soonest opportunity happens at level 4 in any given class)
wait no i figured it out thank you
Chat, What does murder hobo mean? My dm banned me for being a "Murder hobo"
Haphazardly killing anyone/anything you come across
Usually seen as a chaotic game-killer
Oh, okay.
Hey everyone, I am kind of new to DnD, and I was having trouble understanding some rules. I searched up everywhere, and can't find my awnser. Can anyone help me out pls?
What rule?
For example, how do I know if a cantrip, like Eldritch Blast, hits an enemy? I know about AC and spell difficulty, but I have noticed that some enemies can have AC above 20... how would my Eldritch Blast hit them? Should I be scaling it with something? Sorry if the text seems weird; just let me know. English is not my first language, and I play in Portuguese, so we use different terms.
Do you have the players handbook?
Yes
Yup
Your roll total can be above 20
When you make an attack, you roll a d20, and add your modifiers to it (proficiency and your spellcasting modifier, Charisma for warlock)
If the result with the modifier is the same as the AC or higher, you hit, and due to this you can hit even 20+ AC
And a roll of 20 before applying modifiers is a critical hit, which always hits
Page 12 in player's handbook
For example, if you are a level 1 Warlock with 16 Charisma (+3) then your spell attack modifier is +5. If an enemy has an AC of 22, you hit them if you roll a 17 or higher (17+5=22)
Read the attack rolls section
Proficiency? So I add the +2 ( I am level 4 ) to the roll? And +4 for Charisma?
So like: 1d20+2+4?
Assuming your charisma is 18 or 19, yes.
Oh..... so I could have been hitting way higher...
At level 4 or there around your DM will probably start to grant you magic items that can also improve your attack, for example a homebrew item could be a necklace of patron power that grant you +1 to spell attack rolls and +1 to spell save DC.
Do I do the same for other types of cantrips or spells?
If a spell/cantrip uses a spell attack, then yes
That would mena you add another 1 to your attack roll so 1d20+prof+CHAmod+1
Since you would add your spell attack modifier
Some spells have attack rolls while other have a spell save DC.
Love it... thx you all
Spell save DC is page 238 in PHB 2024
I'm a little confused. Isn't that the rod of the pact keeper but a necklace?
8 + Proficiency + Charisma right? For Spell Save?
I just made something up as an example. A DM is free to make up things that they feel is apropriate for the actual campaign
yep
O now I get it. Thx for explaining
Another question... When I made my charecter, his skill Proficiencies were Nature and Arcana. Does that change anything?
Not for attacks
That means you would add your PB to any skill check using those skills
But lets say you find a magic trap. Your DM can ask you to make an INT(arcana) check to see if you can figure out what kind of magic is in the trap.
What's PB?
Proficiency Bonus
Oh
It goes up with levels, like so: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/playing-the-game#ProficiencyBonusTable
You are probably not proficient in athletics so if your DM asks for a STR(athletics) check you only roll the 1d20 and add your STR mod but not your proficiency bonus.
All this is pp 11-12 in PHB 2024
So it's a +2 for Nature and Arcana?
You would also add your INT bonus to both skills, typically
Yeah, +2 in addition to those.
You guys are been really helpful, thx so much. I couldn't find a real awnser anywhere
I checked the books, but I was still confused
I got no int lol
There may be niche cases where your DM decides to use a different ability score for a given skill. A common example is using Strength for an Intimidation check.
But I see why
In summary: p 11-12 for checks, p 238 for save DC, p 12 for attack rolls.
When you level up s a warlock you will get warlock invocations. Solid choices are agonizing blast which increases the damage of your eldritch blasts and repelling blast to push enemies around.
I got Repelling Blast, agonizing Blast, lesson of the first one's ( Lucky ), Pact of The Chain and Investments of the chain Master
Oh oh oh... what's a pact magic? I noticed I have that, but I don't see those kind of magic on chapter 7
Is it like, Pact of The chain?
That is one of your level 1 Warlock features, basically your version of other spellcaster's Spellcasting Feature:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Level1PactMagic
Pact magic is the warlocks unique way of getting spell slots. They get less than other classes, but they recharge faster than other classes: on a short instead of a long rest.
Who wants to play rn
Use #find-a-game for how to find a game here.
It's the thing that gives you cantrips and sets any rules on how you can learn, cast, and prepare spells
Chapter 7 is for spellcasting in general so for example how to calculate your spell save DC on page 238.
So, it's extra spell slots?
That's not exactly right. It's not extra spell slots; rather, it sets how your spell slots work
See the "Spell Slots" subsection of the feature
Different clases' spellcasting work in different ways. They way warlock spellcasting works is described under "Pact Magic". It's just that.
Mhm. For every other class, that section is called "Spellcasting". For warlocks, it's "Pact Magic".
I see
hey idk if anyone's up to talk but I'm new to dnd and I've had friends talk about it and all types of stuff and so I made a character and I just wanted some insight ig or someone to talk to about it
#character-discussion will be happy to hear what you have.
I posted a dndb link
Hi. I am a complete newbie, participating in my first DnD. We are level 4 (me HillDwarf, Fighter) and exploring the Sword Coast. We encountered a pack of Werrats. I don't want to get spoiled, but I find it difficult to find a way, being able to participate. I don't have a silverweapon and seem to be quite useless. Am I missing something obvious? (moved to correct chat [I hope])
You could do other stuff than damage, like pushing them prone or away, grappling them, or using help action to give allies advantage
What is a "help action", dont think, we used that yet
At least in 2014, its an action to help an ally, goving them advantage on a task, not immediately sure on the exact details, but should be possible if you're next to an enemy
Found it: "you can aid a friendly creature in attacking a creature within 5 feet of you. You feint, distract the target, or in some other way team up to make your ally's attack more effective. If your ally attacks the target before your next turn, the first attack roll is made with advantage"
Just ChatGPTed it for me too 🙂 Never heard of it. So basicly, I can be the courts jester, so our bard with his silver dagger gets an advantace throw.
You can find a list of what you could do in combat here:
(assuming 2014 core rules)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#ActionsinCombat
Potentially? But also I wouldn't trust ChatGPT for accuracy
The DM decides what rules are in effect at the game table and if a character's action needs a dice roll or not or if it's even possible.
Thank you, will have a look into this

Is there a limit to how much a wizard can cast spells. Is there some sort of mp or spells per day? Because i don’t want people to just spam spells
Yes, there's a limit. Most spells cost Spell Slots, which are a limited resource that only regenerate after an 8 hour rest.
For example, a level 1 Wizard only has 2 spell slots to begin with.
To learn more, check out the Free Rules in the bot post right above yours, or feel free to ask specific questions here
Thx this helps a lot
If a wizard fails an attack roll does this use a spell slot?
Assuming the Wizard casts a spell that involves an attack roll (not every spell does) and normally costs a spell slot, such as Chromatic Orb, if the attack misses then the slot is unfortunately used.
Take note that some weaker spells are called Cantrips, which don't cost any spell slots at all.
Happy to help
Some of those "weaker" Cantrips can actually be more powerful as the character levels up. A level 1 Chromatic Orb does 3d8 damage... A Firebolt cantrip at level 11 does 3d10 damage.
Choose your spells wisely.
True, but maybe not a comparison that's easily understood by a new player

Tysm!
im new too so thx
Hello
Just joined. I've been into dnd for years, but I got stuck as a DM for almost all the time. My current play by post campaign is sluggish so I'm hoping to find a game to actually be a player in.
I also hope to eventually share my custom setting and tweaked rules, maybe get some feedback on improving it or run test games in it.
Whatever happens, I'm here to have fun.
Welcome! If you're looking to join a game, you can get started on this server by checking in #find-a-game .

And finally, homebrew rules are best talked about in #homebrew .
Sorry, I just realized this is a newcomer channel. I wasn't sure where to introduce myself.
You're all good!
Thank you. I've accessed the channels. Though I get reluctant to intrude on active convos.
Just pop on in. Believe me, the chat never stops
hey! i don’t know if this is the appropriate channel to introduce myself but my name is millie and i’ve been wanting to get into dnd for the past two years or so. the only issue is my friends don’t know how to play, and neither do i, i have no knowledge or experience but i love the idea of dnd and it sounds like so much fun. i decided to join this server to find people who have a good understanding of dnd to help me learn :)

What is the primary ability score of a fighter in 2024
Because I thought you could use dex or strength
That's correct
So if I want to multiclass with low str am i cooked or can i do this
Both are good options for Fighters
Yeah i think it'd be good for my purpose but idk if im allowed lol
str is a dump stat for me
If you're trying to multiclass into or out of Fighter, you need a 13 in either Dexterity or Strength.
awesome
thank you
I am leaning towards multi classing my moon druid at some point for 3 levels of fighters and get those sweet superiority dice which should also help me protect my party better
If you're looking for more advice on timing and builds, I'd recommend #character-discussion .
Oh cool will definitely will keep that in mind
Hey everyone, first time on Discord and brand new to DnD!
My name is Isaac and have always wanted to get into DnD but haven’t known where to start, I don’t know anyone in person who either has experience or wants to play so I am looking to connect in a community of people who aren’t too intense and are fun to be with! I’m not sure if this is the right place to put this but I’m putting it out there!

For how long can I be called a newcomer?
Its not really a time based thing. Its about your comfort level with the game and the rules. If you have any questions about the basics of how the game is played, or how to get started with the game, then you will always be welcome to ask them here. If you start to feel more comfortable with the rules, and want to ask some more complex questions, or discuss more specific aspects of the game, then you can use the other channels in this server
Oh okay
Hello I am very new to dnd and only played a one shot and I am gonna play in a campaign in my city. I wanted to know how do I get in a dnd group without being a annoying new comer and tips or tricks on what and what not to do. Thank you for reading
i skipped past the server rules, how do i see them again
thanks
Okay im extremely new to dnd, all I've really done is bg3 (and im not sure how accurate that is) and watch/listen to some dnd stuff
ive had a slight interested for ages now but never really looked into it until now
so where do i start?

Good place to start are the free basic rules which you can find in the bot post above. Feel free to ask any questions you may have here while you read. 🙂
making a character as practice is not a bad idea. just dont expect them to go unchanged into any actual game
ill try that after i finish reading the rules
antimatter rifles is a shock but okay
classes/backgrounds have predefined starting equipment. dont build your character with random gear that exists
no its just i got surprised as i didn't expect it to appear
ah okay
yeah DnD does have some limited support for some scifi stuff, or at least "science fantasy" in the form of spelljammer for example
wouldn't people just use a different table top game or is dnd just more convenient
some people play different games, some do scifi in dnd. both have advantages and disadvantages.
but while the most popular settings of dnd dont do hard scifi they can do stuff like "alien beings mess with the fantasy world" stuff quite well
and thats where things like anti-matter rifles could appear without much friction
yeah cosmic and alien stuff was always part of DnD
Mindflayers are amongst the most iconic enemies after all
i kind of knew something like that was present but was caught off guard as its the first thing i saw when i looked at weapons in dnd beyond
Hey guys, so I'm kind of new to dnd, I know stuff from Baldur's gate 3 and a bit more. I've had 2 short homebrew campaigns in the past. I know how to play but have a lot to learn still. I'm also new to the whole dnd community thing and I was wondering if there was anyone interested in showing me around and maybe explaining how all of this works over the internet, since my only experience is irl.
I don't want to spam this channel or anything, but the help would be genuinely appreciated.
Hello, New, looking to start a playing group with friends and trying to start with frozen sick that is free. its there maps for that campain? when i git open maps from campaign page on dnd beyond there is only generic maps, could anyone help?

looks good, thanks man
Hi everyone im new to DnD but have invested a lot of time reading up and watching a variety of DnD campaigns to further my knowledge on how different groups work well together etc. i would love to try playing for the first time. Nice to meet you all 🙂
Nice to meet you! I hope your onboarding experience goes smoothly!! ^^
Hi everyone I am new to dnd and just made my first character I am really excited to join an amazing community and Learn the game !!
Hi, I hope it goes well!! Are you playing 2014 or 2024, out of curiosity?
I personally wouldn’t, only because you have no way of knowing what character options are relative to the story. Ideally characters should be made with the guidance of the DM so your character fits in.
oh okay
also idk why but im finding it confusing to find a game
should i be looking for a community
The two 5E versions floating around is certainly making it harder, I’ll give you that
why is there 2?
5E launched in 2014, we’ve just gotten a revised 5E over the past 6 months to fix/tweak some stuff. Some players have switched and some haven’t given how new it is, so right now the community is split between the two versions.
how do i find a one shot though
hey guys
i dont want to go straight into a campaign with no experience
hello
i am selling some custom comissions to dnd characters, is this possible here?
I just join communities at random till I find something that interests me to be honest
ill do that tomorrow as its like 2 am rn
I don’t know for certain as I can’t see a formal rule on it and am not a moderator though I personally wouldn’t recommend it
It’s 2am for me too, guess we have the same timezone
Hi I'm new to dnd and I really want to learn so I can make my first char and play but I'm kinda lost on where to start :((
Option 1, read the players handbook cover to cover

Yeah read it digitally, digital cover to digital cover
How does one get started with DnD, i've never played before and me and my friend have been searching for ages to do something but like we've never really managed to find anything so we wanna do DnD
Read the free players handbook for free
Ohh thanks okay I would read it
Read the free basic rules you generally need to know character creation and combat rules everything else can be done on the fly if need be
If you've made a character your journey is halfway started I'd say!
i ran a clinic for newcomers... about 20 people for 2/3 months, 1-2 one shots a week. half of the people were really appreciative. half of the people didn't even say thank you. 🙂
Hey party people I’m a new to the server and I was just wondering if there’s a channel or something that I can see to see if there’s any campaigns available for a player to hop into
Yep, you can browse through #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players depending on which fits you best. The #find-a-game channel explains how to use those other channels and what the bot commands are if you want to make your own post there
Ok thank you much buddy I’ve been dying to get into a new campaign
Best of luck to you

Welcome. The bot post above has lots of helpful resources to get you started. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We are more than happy to help
hi iam new i need someone that will go with me step for step in learning about the game
Unfortunately, this server has dozens and sometimes hundreds of new people join every day, so we just do not have the resources to do one-on-one guidance for everyone. That's why we have pre-prepared resources like the bot post above to help newcomers learn on their own time. But like I said, we are more than happy to answer any and every question you might have, if you ask it here. But the more specific your questions can be, the more helpful our answers can be
ok tx i just started to learn of the game to day so ye and the videos doesn't help to say
If you need a hand, there's a lot of podcasts I watched to learn how to play. YouTube has a lot of tutorials on the rules, too, so if you can narrow down what you don't understand from those vids or the DnDBeyond site's Free Rules, people can help more :3
ok tx
I wanna make a character but at the same time i’m not sure, because I wanna make sure my character applies to the rules of the campaign, like what if my character has a certain thingy that can’t be, maybe i’m overcautious but still
how do i search for co-dms in the server or outside? im a lil dumb and dont understand the format
i have and i dont understand it
The entire thing, I have a hard time reading
But that's for players only no?
Hello peeps, I am fairly new to DnD. I have never played a session or been a DM but I am doing all the research and prep work to DM for my kids. I do want to play as a player too. Just had knee surgery so stuck at home for a month or so lol
Aww, I hope it goes well man!
My dad got me into D&D as well and playing D&D in the car with him are probably my favourite memories with my dad. I hope you can give your kids the same thing
Thanks. I have 4 kids. Wanting them all to enjoy using their imaginations and engaging in teamwork.
Please don't share exact ages (see server rules) but I play D&D with my kids. It's a lot of fun and I'm sure you'll have a blast.
Also hope your recovery goes well!
Doesn't the exact age rule only apply to users of the server?
Hm, I guess saying how old your kids are is personal information too
Sorry I missed that rule, won’t happen again
Specifically yes it only applies to the specific poster but it's just a good idea to avoid sharing information that could potentially identify you or those around you in real life.
That's fair!
You can go back to your post and edit the specific age out.
May I ask what version you're intending to play with them, out of curiosity? I'm guessing 2024?
Yeah we just got the rule books (waiting on MM to be delivered). We have had the 2014 ones for sometime as well as the expansion books but never got a session going yet.
Ohh I see! Cool!!
My daughter requested velociraptors play a part in our session and that she have an opportunity to tame one so I am trying to fit that in just to see how it goes lol
Look at the Free Rules first. See what you can do with what's on offer.
I still get confused about how jumping works
What is the best way to find/join a campaign
Cause I’ve never done anything dnd online before
#find-a-game this is good for finding games online
how do grapples work?
i know you have to be larger than your opponent but what does it do?
and what check would you roll for it
So you can grapple a creature one size larger than you in 5.5 on a STR save that is 8+Prof+Mod.
Unarmed attack.
i have it on my DM screen but its in my bag.
do you play mostly online or irl?
I play online more often than not. I don’t have many places around here I can do in person.
Hit die for creatures rarely come up but are used to average their health pool.
I have a tabletop tavern near me its pretty interesting and there is a place for d&d but it has spots for figures and stuff and i dont have any and idk how to get any for a good price and i need to learn to paint lol
In rare circumstances there are effects they can benefit from like Whither and Bloom to heal from expending a HD.
I don’t believe I used that specific block. It was I believe session 1 or 2 of a 3rd level game.
I’ll double check the stats when I’m not on a bumpy road XD
its CR is only a 1/8
Is the the medium or small sized one?
medium
i see, what does that do
Oh. It occupies a 2x2 space and small creatures can’t grapple it. It also can be a mount for a creature one size smaller than it or smaller.
Most of the time it just gives players more squares to punch but it also gives the crab more snipping range.
also, when i read the manuals attack stats, it says a number at the beginning for example "melee attack role: +3, reach 5 feet Hit: (1d6+1)
what is the +3? the atk dc bonus?
That is the Crab's attack bonus for that attack
Yep. For that creature it has +3 attack bonus on a D20.
so like if i roll a 15 to see if it hits, it will be a 18?
Yep!
ok thank you. i understand the damage and all, does making the crab large increase stats
Not one bit.
It does not change it's stats, no
Size affects a few limited things - for every size category your Push, Drag lift increases by double.
Also if my words are jumbled - it’s because I’m on a really bumpy road.
What increasing the size category does is
- Increase then amount of squares a creature occupies on the battlemap
- Increase the Push/Drag/Lift capacities
Depending on the source of the size increase it may also: - Increase the creature's weight
- Increase the creature's attack damage
An example of the latter is the Enlarge/Reduce spell
and one final question, how does actions work in a fight, like what is a bonus action? and how do i know if my player or i have one
Have you gone through the Free Rules yet?
i havent really gone through them but i have referenced it
are they in the players handbook?
Yes
Bonus action is a special action specified by different abilities that are not actions, reactions or movement.
My personal opinion is Bonus actions are cursed.
Because if you don’t have one - and everyone else does, you feel like you’re doing less and that’s not fun. But also reaching through other tool kits just to get one is… kind of gross?
But you don’t NEED a BA to have fun and be effective.
Some kits just don’t get them.
oh so it just will specify under the class feature or spell if it is a bonus action
Yes
Yes!
lol another question, as a DM how do i know when to ask my players to roll for a saving throw. because i have done it wrong before
An ability will usually ask for it but certain other factors will let you ask for them.
If it’s part of a monster attack or effect, spell, etc it will say
oh ok
Like “the floor is slippery, give me a DC 12 Dex save.”
Would it be bad if I made my character from the 2024 players handbook when the others in my party are going from the 2014 book?
Sometimes you can just make up reasons based on circumstances.
i think they are compatible
See here for more information:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#SavingThrows
It depends but my personal opinion is… eh?
What are you considering from 5.5 and why?
I would switch to 2014. 2024 classes are almost a strict upgrade to their 2014 counterparts. You'll end up getting more and possibly better features.
While they are compatible a party should be standardized in terms of character creation
Ok! Thanks for the advise!
Because if you’re doing it simply for a power spike - than perhaps it’s in ill taste. If the new flavor suits your playstyle more and isn’t disruptive to the game, then go for it!
ah ok, and this one is probably my last question becasue i ran out. oppurtunity actions are like when someone moves away from you right?
or you move from them?
Think of it like rolling for your stats when the rest of the party uses point buy
Yes, but no. There are other ways to trigger AOO.
But most of the time it’s walking away from a creature without disengaging.
Opportunity Attacks, not actions. That is a single attack when an enemy leaves your melee range that costs your reaction. See here for the rules on it:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#OpportunityAttacks
Almost home to my PC.
Honestly, I’m glad I joined this discord today. I had a real itch to meet other players and DMs.
So. Ive never played before and don't know much about the game, but im trying to create pages for a character bio building notebook that my husband has designed and 3d printed. Where can I find the newest editions of example pages? what information is needed and what formats work best? Anything specific that people do or don't like?
If you want to see what a character journal might look like check #dnd-arts-and-crafts
Otherwise #learn-to-play has a link to the 2024 5e character sheet and Free Rules
oh so a oppurtunity attack is just when a enemy leaves your range, does it require an attack roll? or does it always hit? and you just roll the default attack for the weapon your using?
Yes it requires an attack roll. Refer to the link I replied with to see what an opportunity attack involves
Awesome! Thank you!
i joined like yesterday lol!
Good evening everybody. I’ve been getting into d&d recently and just joined the server. Any advice for character creation?
Well. My personal opinion on that is Get your DM's Character Gen rules - Roll the Dice or prepare your point buy spread and then systematically work down the checklist of...
Race/Class/Backround/Items.
If you compartmentalize each aspect of it into a way that is simple and comfortable for you.
Then it is much easier!
I just got outta a session and I am kinda embarrassed I locked up as I am not good at actual persuasion or intimidation
What happpen in the session
(I was supposed to persuade something and I have no idea how to my sub-dm fellow player got to do one of the in-Universe Oneshot said this is how he goes and he doesn't want to just rely on dice roles and I bricked up as I am no good at improve or on the spot stuff he was showing how he dm for a future campaign
We were in the SCP universe Infront of the SCP-001 (Gate Guardian) and I had to convince them why he should let me thru the gate his main job is to not let any human into the garden of Eden
Well the other side of us approaching was Another concept for SCP-001 (When Day Break)
I get attached to this character and didn't want her to die at all but this was go thru the portal or die situation is how I took it)
Thank you! I’ll be sure to ask my DM what their rules are
Not a problem and feel free to reach out and strike a conversation up if you ever need anything - oooooor have a spot open for a late night player XD
I'm a textbook of useless DND facts.
This is an example of why I think making people give their persuasive arguments instead of rolling can be a problem. I may give someone a bonus for good RP, but I'm not going to force them to improv a speech just because their character is good at talking
They say they want People to act out their rolls and it will either auto pass or roll if it fails or not
I want to join his future campaign but this one shot gave me true anxiety attack
He said he pushing me as I use ai too much
I'll admit... I do not like Voice games, and speaking my PC out does give me a spike of anxiety. That being said, I don't mind talking as long as I am not forced to verbally talk out my entire persuasive arguement.
For me, it’s use the book. Not dnd beyond
At least for your first character it helps you learn their moves and such, it also helps you understand some mechanics
Ai? Like how?
Also, I feel like when I use dnd beyond some weird stuff happens and messes up stats
dnd beyond confuses the heck outta me
maybe its me not using it correctly but i cant figure out how to see the other 8 species just the basic 4 dwarf elf halfling human
I think this definitely could use some context! On one hand, making players RP for results unfairly leaves in-game outcomes on out-of-game player traits (persuasiveness, improv, etc). On the other hand, AI use can be red-flag. Not only is it notoriously unreliable for understanding the rules of 5e, it can come off as inauthentic to use it in place of playing a character oneself.
The 4 Races you see are all that is included in the 2024 Free Rules. In order to access the others, you will need to purchase the PHB and/or related content books (e.g. Monsters of the Multiverse)
I just figured that out google helped me once i searched Dnd beyond how to
If you think DDB is glitching out try bringing up the issue in #ddb-support . I would specify the issue though. How exactly are the stats ending up mistmatched, for example?
I need to schedule time to site down no distractions and build my char sheet
What are people’s opinion on Forge/Foundry/Roll20 here before I talk about rolling characters and preference?
Brain lagged.
Ran campaigns on both roll20 and foundry, and I like the latter a lot better. Both are complex pieces of software and foundry is annoying to set up (port forwarding), but it gives you a lot more freedom in what you can do.
Roll20 is laggy and glitchy but so is foundry. Roll20 has a smoother learning curve and better imo youtuber support than foundry so yor mileage may vary.
I have high hopes for dndbeyond and the one mcdm is working on.

How do i know what my profincie bonus is? Im a level 1 warlock
Check your class table as it lists what your proficiency bonus is for each level.
At level 1, you should have a +2 proficiency bonus.
To calculate this on your own, take your total character level and divide it by four. Round up, and add one.
I had a wizard that I had it roll for HP at level one and it was way over what is possible for a wizard, like it was 17 or something for level 1
You take the maximum roll for level 1 anyway. And for a wizard that's 6. You don't get to 17 from there.
Even if they had Tough and max con somehow, that wouldn't get to 17
Good day lads ladesses... 😉
This may come across as quite an odd and peculiar request but I have recently stumbled upon baldurs gate 3 never playing dnd in my life but have found myself captivated by this game and the concept of dnd... I have no idea what im doing as a beginner or how to get started but would love to learn

The bot post right above this has a bunch of relevant links. Within the free rules, the most important things are Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and the parts of subsequent chapters that would specifically apply to the character you create.
There are some differences between BG3 and the current print rules, because some things don't translate directly from paper to bits (or vice-versa).
No tag bg3 found.

Oops, sorry for the double post
All good
I knew what it meant. It's practically a running gag that outside 2 or 3 very specific bot commands, I'm kind of locked in an eternal war with Dyno when I try to help folks out.
Understandable. Either way I have been watching some of critical rolls campaigns and have enjoyed viewing this far and wouldn't mind immersing into things a bit deeper.

I use ai alot to help me decide and plan out character and adventure like I'll come up with idea and run it thru chatgpt to flesh it out
I'll prompt ai with this
I want to make a DND illusion wizard she a wood Elf and loves playing tricks can you help me build her We are using 2024 rules and she is a charlatan she does proformances
I already have her rolled up I just want a backstory and look of her
And then I would let it generate and then I refine it to what I want to a T
I also have it pick me spells when idk which to choose
Might as well use the random charts and spend some time browsing character art, or playing with Heroforge.
Or when I make a world I'll give AI idea and then work with it to build my DM world I am not creative at all
I would not recommend telling new players to rely on AI to design or plan their characters in any fashion.
I don't even understand the pleasure of it tbh
Like the fun is in going into a book, learning what spells to use?
Or making up a world and its names.
It's also not really suitable for new players to recommend them using Machine Learning Algorithm powered programs as they have very poor understanding of what they are actually doing.
At that point, the AI is playing DND
-# (Badly)
The hero forge membership gives you a discount?
AI often sticks its nose where it shouldn't.
If you want to discuss AI some more please do so in #non-dnd-topics . This channel is for helping newcomers with questions about D&D
Quite so.
One day I’ll be an absolute menace in a campaign and get featured in a crit crab video o just know it one day…anything is possible
Uh. Are you a new player wishing to cause that level of chaos or just being silly and dropping in that random thought XD
I’m just a silly little guy I mean it’s what my character would do
I wouldn't recommend going into a game with that kind of attitude.
Yeah. I get chaos being fun but uh. Don’t go causing trouble just for the fun of it. Whether new or experienced. You’re all spending your 1-6 hours a day gaming and no one wants that time wasted.
Hey, guys, are there any apps that can help you track record of your character and help you follow the game?
The DnD Beyond one is what's probably most used on this server
Is it just to track your character stats or is it fully integrated into a campaign where you can a see a map and stuff?
There's no current integration into being able to see a battle map as far as I'm aware, though the DnD Beyond team is working on a Virtual Table Top (VTT) system. Maybe it'll be accessible via their app in the future?
On the whole, VTTs are not very mobile friendly at all.

are there any other ways i can make a character online that isn't dnd beyond
A traditional character sheet is always an option
where do i do that
there are other sites and tool with the same functionality. If you want legal access to the paid stuff, the number of options is small, but there are still some, like foundry, roll20, fantasygrounds.
and of course, pdf sheets are also a thing
I'm wanna start doing a session but would it be better to do a one shot?
there's a Google Sheet version, too.
Google sheet version of one shot?
They were talking to the person inquiring about character sheets
Ohhhhh my bad lol
Yeah, just overlapped.
i am very confused
By what?
the character sheet is overwhelming
It’s about breaking it down into bits and pieces. Don’t look at it as a whole but as a process. I’d recommend starting with Rolling your stats, or point buy.
Go according to your DMs character gen.
how do i calculate hit point maximum
Once you roll or Point Buy according to your DMs CharGen, I recommend selecting your-
i used point buy
What resource are you using for your class data?
Because your Starting health is their max on their Hit Die (the dice used to determine your health and other effects) plus Constitution Modifier.
So for an Artificer at level 1 - it is 8+ConMod.
Modifiers are determined by every 2 above or below 10 gives you a + or - 1.
im making a level 5 barbarian, im guessing the level matters
Hm. It feels like you’re jumping a bit further ahead than you should as a new player. If I had more time I’d be able to explain step by step the process but I’m at work. If someone doesn’t help you by 11EST - shoot me a DM and I’ll give you a full walk through!
thanks for the offer but that would be 4 am for me
Shoot. Well I do have tomorrow off from work but I’m sure you’ll have help by then. Sorry >.<.
can anyone add me and call me to explain the whole thing to me because its a lot easier for me to listen to someone explain it and answer any of my questions then type them
Have you watched any YouTube videos
yes but i get lost or distracted too easily
Take your time
ill try that
12 for the first level and 7 for each level after. That gets you to 40. Then add your Constitution modifier times five (for five levels). If your CON is 14 your modifier is +2, so that adds 10 HP for a total of 50.
im starting to lose motivation to get into dnd so i think i might take a few days away from searching for a one-shot to play and everything and comeback later
thanks for all the help but im just getting stressed out over it
Do you have to start at lvl 1 I'm building a druid and the fun stuff doesn't happen to lvl 2
in think there's a tabletop club at my school but its half term in the uk rn so i cant check, ill look there when it starts back up again
Look for a local geek retreat in the uk they run youth and beginner games sometimes

Thanks, Dino Dude!
You can if you have a DM who'd be happy to run you as a new player learning as you go, but generally, you want some idea of what you're doing so you don't bog down a game as you struggle with concepts 🙂
Thanks! I found the new player tutorial-trial thing on d&d beyond website... But thank you!
Every game is its own thing, not all start at level one. Probably best if you plan a character out as if they will, though. Get the basics down first.
Do Changelings exist and can I be one in-game?

There are Changelings but you may need to speak with your DM to see if they are approved for their game.
Great!! Thanks!
. . . and a DM is...?
jk lol, thank you
Where do I find people who are looking for players, again?
#looking-for-players Never played before but I'm interested in starting
Do I need to create a character first? Or are there games that do that?
Usuallu you'd create a character for a campaign, as some have specific rules for what's allowed and what's not, but making characters outside of that is also a good way to practice!
I'm a newbie and I feel like playing. I have only played a one shot before

You can check out #looking-for-players for games that are to your liking or make a post in #looking-for-dm following the guidlines in #find-a-game to show people you are open to play :)
Hello there, I'm new to the server. Been dming D&D for about a year now and I'm curious to see if I can find games to join for once
Check the information in #find-a-game to see how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a game.
Alright then, thanks
How does movement actually work, primarily without a map? With a map I've seen it before, one square represents a certain amount of feet and that's that. When not in combat I assume it just doesnt really matter? But what if you're doing combat without a map. Does everyone just imagine things and the number of feet isn't super exact or what?
This is often called theater of the mind, and yes, everything happens in folks' imagination. It's less precise than a battlemap, but I wouldn't go so far as to say "it doesn't really matter."
Here's a good article on it: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/355-how-to-run-combat-in-the-theater-of-the-mind
Pretty much. The DM might hold a "scratch map" for referencing folk's relative positions and ranges, but it's all done through description.
Makes sense, thanks
