@frigid radish You should still, so far as I know be able to claim the Intro to Stormwreck adventure on D&D Beyond. It's a part of the adventure in the current Starter Set (which, as a print product, is ~$20-25 USD suggested retail price). As part of the Starter Set, it's designed for people new to everything.
Yh argos sells for £20 in uk
If did see this! I ran a very very mini campaign meant for kids and the family is dying for more 😂 now we have my kids 12-14-16 my husband and his friends all wanting me to organize a bigger campaign… so deep dive into proper Dming here I come
OK, so then... the full Stormwreck Isle adventure from the Starter Set would probably take 3-4 sessions to run from character levels 1-4. the Essentials Kit should still be available for about the same price, and would take probably ~6-7 sessions to take the characters to level 5. When last I knew, it came with codes to claim 3 follow-on adventures through D&D Beyond that, collectively, would get the PCs to about level 13.
There are also a number of "hardcover" advenutres that begin at level 1 and generally cap out around level 10-12.
Blurbs on the adventures, along with some notes about player types that might be good for them when I have been able to solicit that information: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VOgGmMcFGrYqzYiJXPjIRagqefGK4DiPDNCK2-qZ9cQ/edit?usp=drive_link
where can i get a decent engaging campaign for free
we made our own characters and stuff a party of 4 people
ill send the character sheets to #character-discussion
DMsGuild would be my suggestion.

THANK YOU SO MUCH
Honestly grabbing a few is also not a bad idea I know money can be tight but if you have the money, lost mines or phandelver and below isn’t a half bad choice, nor is curse of Strahd if you don’t mind putting in some work
My link above deliberately omits the anthology hardcovers.
Ye
I would not recommend curse of strahd as a first time dm. It can work, yes, but imo the campaign is make or break by how well the dm can play strahd.
True
I think Phandelver has the most guard rails because it’s an expansion of the old starter set adventure.
Witchlight also appears to have decent GM guidance with the tracking sheets.
How do spells work?
these are the general rules about spells. everything else should be in the text of individual spells
Hi is there anyone that can help me build a D&D character? I’m new at this and was curious
I haven't played through it myself, so I can't swear to anything. It is, however, expansive.
Have you looked at the basic rules
Nope! I’m trying to find as well too please

How would I play the game with people online
Hey, glad you’re interested in this game! To start, I would definitely start watching YouTube videos about the game. Some channels I would personally recommend are YMBA, Dnd shorts, Dungeon Dudes, and Treant Monk!
Learn a bit about the game, make a character, then look for a GM I'd say.
some GMs, myself included, love showing newcomers the ropes.

The best place to start is by reading the free rules linked above!
yeah i was going to send that
There's also a set of intro videos linked there as well which people find useful.
Btw how do I make a character...
Thankfully, the link provided above also lists how to create a character!
so i have started playing with a friend and both of our sons...
characters have reached lvl 3 and should be able to pick a subclass.
however most options are blocked.
what is the best option for us to get acces to more subclasses?
Purchasing the books which contain the subclasses
And you're looking for additional subclass options? Which book do you have?
PHB
yeah we do
Then the best other books for additional subclasses are Xanathar's Guide and Tasha's Cauldron.
we created character in beyond and then printed and play from paper
I suggest you keep your characters in DnD Beyond
There are also Subclasses spread throughout other books though. Bigby's Guide, Fizban's, and Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide to name a few
Then you can change them whenever, I think
I… don’t know
Ah, sorry, I misunderstood your question
Which class do you use?
So you have a physical book and you're trying to figure out how to upload that information into DnD Beyond?
i am playing a rogue and was thinking about arcane trickster for example
yes
Then you have two options.
- Purchase the book a second time on DnD Beyond.
- Manually input the information using DnD Beyond's homebrew system.
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
i will try homebrew first... is that difficult?
i never did homebrew myself if i’m correct
@timid locust quick question... if i buy the digital book from dnd beyond. can i somehow give my friends subclass acces? or do each of us have to buy the book? (seems a bit harsh)
The homebrew method is a little tedious, but you can't argue with the price!
As for this method, the answer is yes... But only if you have a certain subscription tier. I'm not entirely familiar with the specifics myself, unfortunately.
?tag ddb contentsharing
Content Sharing
A player or DM with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing in up to five campaigns. Once Content Sharing is enabled, any content unlocked by anyone in the campaign gets shared with everyone else, and they can use those shared character options for characters in that campaign. Learn more
thanks for all the info! i will start looking into the homebrew for now
We'll be happy to help with anything else.
So myself, my partner, our friend and her sister made the silly mistake of buying the new PHB and tried using the DnD beyond app to update our characters...... suffice to say we have had to start them basically over 😂
If you've got a PHB, a paper-and-pencil character sheet is really all you need. But yes, rebuilding existing characters one step at a time is a really good way to learn what has changed for those classes at each level.
I like the paper solution myself 🙂
I have literally never played dnd or tried, I wanna get into it but I don't know anything and it seems so confusing
Is there like anywhere in this server to find an oline session?
Check out the info in #find-a-game
Newcomers I escaped the the hell that is finding a campaign
Congrats
So I'm trying to redo my lvl 4 character as we have purchased the newer version of the PHB.....I have the Guide background, Human Variant. My stats are Str 8 - Dex 14 - Con 14 - Int 10 - Wis 14 - Cha 16.
Should I pick a 4th level feat or ability points? I'm thinking the later would help more
Sounds more like a question for #character-discussion
But generally speaking, many folks find ability score improvements more useful than feats
Sorry, still learning....I'm gutted they have changed the starting equipment....no longer can have a boomerang 😂
Thank you kind sir

hi, i'm new to dnd wanting to make a character, not all subclasses or classes are showing up for me on roll20 is that normal?
Unless you've purchased the additional content, only the free rules content will appear
hi
Yes if you haven’t gottten the book you’ll not have access to them only the basic free rules subclasses
same with dnd beyond correct?
Yes you’ll only have access to the content for the free basic rules
how can i take a pre existing subclass (ex. assasin rogue and use it)
Everything about combat confuses me any tips?
Hey guys, can someone explain spell tiers and spell slots?
I think I have got a somewhat grasp but still I don't understand it
Actually I only understood that you can use certain tier spells with it's level or higher slots
I recommend watching Handbooker Helper's tutorial video on spells:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9ZnlZ7VudM
Each spell has a level roughly describing how powerful it is. More powerful spells need an equivalently powerful spell slot to cast. Think of spell slots as a kind of currency. To pay for (cast) a level 3 spell, you need a $3 coin (a level 3 spell slot).
You can "overpay" for spells, eg, using a $5 coin (spell slot) to pay for (cast) a level 3 spell like fireball. Sometimes, you don't get any bonus for doing so, but sometimes you will get a little bonus for the extra payment. For example, fireball does a little extra damage if you overpay, but detect magic gets no benefit for overpaying. You never get any change back from overpaying.
This analogy breaks down a bit when you think of the opposite, aka using multiple smaller denominations to pay for a bigger thing. What I mean is, you cannot use three $1 coins (spell slots) to pay for (cast) a level 3 spell, even though 1+1+1 =3. Magic in 5e simply does not work like that.*
*With the exception of sorcerers, who can trade spell slots for sorcery points, and then these sorcery points for spell slots, effectively allowing them to turn three level 1 slots into a level 3 slot. This does incur an exchange fee of sorts though, and is inefficient. As a result, it actually takes five level 1 slots to equal a single level 3 slot for sorcerers.
hopefully that helps
When you use a tier 2 spell and use a tier 2 slot does the slot dissapear or can I keep using it
Or is the spell like bound to the slot
in older versions, the spell is bound to the slot. In newer versions, that's not the case. However, the slot is spent for the rest of the day after using it. It comes back on a long rest, but until then, you cannot use it again. If you have multiple slots, then you track each slot seperately (or often as a fraction like 1 remaining/2 total)
So let's say I use a tier 1 slot and tier 2 slot. After using them I now have no spells
So now I have to take a long rest to be able to use the spells again
Right?
The slot does not dissapear, rather it just gets "tired"
Level 2, not tier 2.
I am already level x, why would I want a level x spell and not tier x spell
Sounds thrice cooler
Sure but it makes it a bit easier to communicate since the game uses “level # spellslot” for terminology and not “tier # spellslot”
To answer this question, it depends. If you have no level 1 or level 2 spellslots left, then you will no longer be able to cast any level 1 or level 2 spell.
Let's say I have to spells
To illustrate this example, let’s say you are a level 3 Wizard. Therefore, you have 4 level 1 spellslots and 2 level 2 spellslots. If you cast Magic Missile at 1st level, then you have 3 level 1 spellslots and 2 level 2 spellslots left.
Both level 2. If I use one spell with level 2 slot can I use the other spell too?
If you have an available level 2 spellslot after expending the other one then yes
Well to be specific, if you have another spellslot of at least level 2 then you can still cast the other spell. Or you can cast the same spell again.
If you haven’t checked #find-a-game I would, otherwise it’s best to cast your net wide. Try other avenues like other D&D servers, local game stores, libraries, social media TTRPG groups (e.g. Reddit’s r/lfg)!
No no I know I’ve been at this for a little over a month now

@final meteor hi friend!
Hi 👋
you're just looking to learn some of the rules and stuff?
to "play a little and learn the game"?
Yes exactly, i always wanted to learn and play the game but even when i read about the game rules and other stuff i still feel like I'm not fully understand and not really for a serious game
I used a website to create one but I'm not sure i made him in the right way or not tho
Did you use D&D beyond?
Yes
it's easy if you follow the steps!
Maybe a VC with someone more experienced for you to share your screen and ask away will help? (Not me, unfortunately I'm a newbie)
If you set the character to public, you can post a link to their sheet in #character-discussion and ask for feedback
I think finding an experienced person who can help you learn the game from scratch is also difficult
Oh ok I'll try that
Hey, there are some beginner friendly campaigns sometimes. My DM helped me a lot to learn.
Where can i find some??
I've found here, on #looking-for-players .
Take a look and see if you can find anything interesting.
Thanks
Idk if that's the chat for it but I'm a new player currently starting my first dnd game (5e) I need to choose between 2 cantrips i feel like I'd like (mage hand and message) which one would be better? (For a sorcerer)
Both are great, but I'll say Mage hand.
Both are useful in their own ways. Assuming you already have a cantrip that can deal damage, I think either one of these can be helpful.
My personal favorite between the two is Message, though!
😄
Message does ONE important thing. Mage hand does DOZENS of important things, if you're creative.
Thank you!!
Im havibg troubles choose a second cantrip tho,
I wanna choose message but I need another one
Any suggestions?
think of it that way.
Silly q, we have been learning to play while doing our own campaign of sorts (my partner has attempted to DM n has done great) we went from using the paper official character sheets to using DND beyond....but we wondered if there was any other digital means to follow progress, track etc that's more like the paper?
I miiight
Hmsnsgsnokaybyeah
Okay
Mind sliver.
I'll choose mage hand but I need one more cantrip and I've been googling all of them and ifk what to choose
What does it do?
Mind Sliver because it does Damage based on enemy int which is always low. let me find a good definition....
Mind Sliver (TCoE): Psychic damage on an Intelligence save is spectacular on its own. Intelligence saves are consistently among the lowest, and psychic damage resistance/immunity is rare (though it does exist, especially on mindless enemies like zombies). That alone makes Mind Sliver arguably the most reliable cantrip damage in 5e, but it gets better from there. With only Verbal components, Mind Sliver works while you’re tied up or have your hands full, making it a great option for War Caster. It also imposes a -1d4 penalty on the target’s next saving throw making them an easier target for save-or-suck spells, or you can just repeatedly hit them with Mind Sliver and watch enemies try to beat your spell save DC with a +0 save bonus and the -1d4 penalty from your previous hit.
(tasha's cauldron of everything is TCoE)
Okay!
here's my main argument against message even though it's cool.
I am gonna ask a few questions for my character if u don't mind because I'm very clueless
If your GM is a stickler, he knows message has verbal components anyway. So it's not PERFECTLY quiet, like you'd think.
I'd love to help you!
My character is a sorcerer and half elf if that matters btw
Any information you think is important, matters.
I picked Mending as one of my cantrips 😂 seems our Ork paladin and dwarf druid break, rip so much
Ohh okay:3
My dm says I can't choose mind silver tho for his story ver do u have any other recommendations?
It's always great to be able to repair something damaged in a ruin, or by a party memeber! 😄
YES. I. DO.
Prestiganation
You create a magical effect within range. Choose the effect from the options below. If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have up to three of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time.
Sensory Effect. You create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, faint musical notes, or an odd odor.
Fire Play. You instantaneously light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire.
Clean or Soil. You instantaneously clean or soil an object no larger than 1 cubic foot.
Minor Sensation. You chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material for 1 hour.
Magic Mark. You make a color, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface for 1 hour.
Minor Creation. You create a nonmagical trinket or an illusory image that can fit in your hand. It lasts until the end of your next turn. A trinket can deal no damage and has no monetary worth
will he allow... shape water? Prestidigitation or minor illusion?
Yes
I need to choose only 1 more tho
That Presti is fun, n useful....or it has been to us (we are only lvl 4 😂)
prestidigitation and shape water do amazing things if you're creative, minor illusion too. I'll give you a good argument from the web for each one.
and you tell me what you like best.
I thought abt choosing prestidigitation but I wasn't sure what it does
Google wasn't much of a helper
Thank yiu!!
Prestidigitation (PHB): Whenever you want to do something small and magical that’s not covered by another spell, it’s usually covered by prestidigitation. This spell is exceptionally versatile. For suggestions on how to use Prestidigitation to its fullest, here's a link...
this will EMBARASS YOU with how many options presti has.
Does it change based on my characters race and class? (The damage it does or it's effects or in generally whar it does)
Minor Illusion: (PHB): Room for plenty of creative, deceptive uses. The 5-foot cube is easily enough to create something to hide behind, provided that your enemies don’t see you create the illusion. -- just think of it. FAKE DOORS when somebody is chasing you. Make an illusionary mushroom to cover you from shooters or fliers! Fake walls!
block line of sight or hallways entirey!
Almost no effect in the entire game changes or differs based on your race
Oh okay!
I think I'll choose prestidigitation
In DnD, spells, items, and features all do exactly what they say on the tin. No need to worry about situational interactions.
Shape water is hilarious because you can make 5x5 blocks of ice and drop them on people.
Ok.
I need to choose 4 1st level stuffies
Any suggestions?
glad I could help. Presti does so much with a nice GM that rewards creativity.
Do you want me to pick 4 spells for you? I'd rather tell you what I think is best and let you pick.
-# This doesn't work RAW, and I wouldn't suggest recommending ideas like this to newcomers. Best to keep things simple and not reliant on DM approval.
Wait does the skill proficiency i chose matters?
Tell me what you think is best,
If you could guve me more than 4 it'd be good so I could choose out of the best
Spells
and I agree to disagree DOSH, a barrel of water and the shape water spell are chocolate and peanut butter. 😛
ok... spells.
I just wanna know if the skill proficiency I chose changes it
Absorb elements, Featherfall, Magic Missile, Shield, Silent image, Silvery Barbs, Sleep.
those are the best 1st level spells for a newcomer.
I'd keep it simple and take shield and magic missile for 2 of those.
Shield lets you use a reaction to raise your AC by 5... so if somebody is going to hit you, you can say... "No thank you!"
it never. gets. old.
especially in the beginning when you're low level. that hit is going to maim or drop you. And you can say "Nope."
Magic missile range is long and the damage type is the best.
it just works.
silvery barbs is complicated so i take that back even though it's great.
that leaves two more spells.
I do have a question, does what i chose in "sorcerer skill proficiency" matters? If it does I chose arcana and intimidation
Does anyone have a good short campaign (maybe 30 minutes to an hour) for online or real life?? DM me please
Silent Image is awesome if you're creative. create a false copy of you and go the other way. Walls are silent so why not illusionary walls? Mushrooms are silent... instant cover for a giant mushroom. if you just want an object or a visual effect, Silent Image does the job just as well. Throw up a fake wall, door, or portcullis to slow pursuers. Create a piece of furniture, then hide inside it and stab people when they try to open it. Illusions are limited more by your creativity (and your DM’s willingness to play along) than by the spell’s text.
then pick featherfall. People fall all the time. You take 1d6 damage for every 10 feet you fall. You can SAVE LIVES with featherfall... and that isn't even getting into how you can basically drop silently into people's midst and other commando stuff with it.
Sorcerers don't get to heal, but featherfall is an instance where preventing damage is just as good.
and nothing says "Pffffft" better than leaping off a wall while being pursued, landing softly, and running into the woods.
So look at your options, but shield is a must, magic missile and silent image are great (Silent image is best if your GM is cool and rewards creativity)
the safe picks are shield, magic missile, feather fall and silent image.
though absorb elements can be useful too for traps and exotic damage sources.
Nah my Gm is the best he's creative af
❤️
I looked through the list of options he sent me
I think some aren't there

Hey guys anyone know a good trusted artist?
Please use #dnd-advertisements to solicit for commissioning art.
This is not the server for discussing artists generally
There's an interaction I'm unsure about. Does the second attack from nick also give you a second weapon equip or unequip
It does, because it's now part of the attack action. More complex questions like that are better suited to #dnd-rules , for future reference though.

I feel I've converted my paper character to our DND beyond app campaign wrong.....Im a Variant Human Bard Lvl 4
14 AC (it was 12AC on paper),
+3 Initiative (was +2 on paper)
29HP, (that's the same)
8STR - 16 DEX - 16 CON - 10 INT - 12 WIS - 16 CHA. (I seem to have gained +2 in Con)
I can't select Boomerang or disguise kit in my starting equipment....I've now got 2 daggers, a bow.
Did you make your paper sheet with 2014 or 2024 rules?
I'm new and know a few basic things (1 or 2) Should I try to figure out more rules and then look for a group to join so they could teach me a lot more ? Or should I study the rules for like a month ? Are there any alternate paths ?
Is the players handbook 5th edition good ? Or is there a better version ? How do the versions really work ?
Read the Free Rules first. It's free so you don't have to bother buying any books at the start (don't spend money if you find out you don't like the game!).
Each edition is a different set of rules, so it's up to the group which version they play. The current edition (and the most popular) is fifth edition. The Player's Handbook is the core book for the game, but you can try the game with the free rules first to ensure you like it enough to spend money on the hobby.
And my take is you stand a better chance of joining a group if you know some of the rules. A month is maybe overkill, though.
There is no set guideline on how long it takes for you to learn the rules. There are tutorial videos linked earlier that can help you understand the rules more easily.
Thats what I was wondering about, there are so many paths I can choose, but I don't know witch way to go...
What do you mean by paths?
how to learn the game
D&D is a game of rules. You can't avoid reading the rules. The tutorial videos will help but you will eventually need to read the rules.
Take your time reading them. Come here if you have trouble understanding parts of the rules.
Hmmm, okay, I'll try the tutorials first and then try to read some rules then try the game, because the game sounds awesome and fun. I'll ask here again if I need help with something like rules.
I don't recommend you trying to join a game and expect the DM to teach you. The DM is a busy person and it's a tad inconsiderate to have them constantly pause the game to teach you how to play. Help the DM by making their life easier by getting the fundamentals of the game.
There are plenty of actual play videos on Youtube and Twitch. You can watch how people play the game, however, keep in mind that those are how those people play and don't expect it to be like that at your own table. Some of those games have professional actors as DMs and players...
Hmm that makes sence.... Okay I'll try to learn as much as I can.
heya! never played d&d in my life. i'm still reading up on the rules, but i have a question when it comes to stats. How do you determine the stats of your character(HP, AC, abilities, skills)?

What should i know about for playing cleric
You've got lots of potential options. Do you have anything in mind as a character other than "cleric"? (In other words, could you describe them like you were writing for a short story?)
Which sub-class do you plan on playing?
Hi I am fairly new to D&D and have learned a lot from Balders Gate as I do not have others near me that play table top. I'd just like to connect with people that play and hopefully get into a group to play together.
G'day to y'all. Anyone looking for a fourth party member?
I'm not well versed in the inner workings of the game yet, more so interested in the role playing and creativity the game allows players to have.
I can't promise to be a good player, but I do have a knack for keeping things entertaining at least

Great place to start is with reading the free basic rules. And feel free to ask questions you might have here. Once you've had a read over, you can check out posted games in #looking-for-players or make a post for yourself in #looking-for-dm. You can also check out 3rd party virtual table top sites like Roll20 where DMs advertise and run games. Just as a heads up, this channel isn't for recruiting or looking for games.
Much appreciated
Happy to help
The only big question I have is whether I can make an object a character
Like a cursed armor that possessed a humanoid host and now pretends to be a regular human
That's something you have to ask and work with your DM.
I recommend you learn the game with the base player species for now.
Fair enouvh
I did DM a pseudo dnd thing last year or so tho I did make up most of the rules, classes, lore, etc...
Never got around to reading the actual manual but we had character sheets and everything XD
You could play a Warforged flavoured as a possessed suit of armour but, yes, this would need approval from your DM
Ye, I figured it was a particularly quirky type of character that would function a bit too differently from a humanoid
Asking your GM is a good start, and if it's just flavoring but it's something regular mechaically I wouldn't take issue.
I mean, it raises questions and could even be exploited. Like what if mending cantrips healed you? Infinite healing resources!
One of my players plays a "living suit of armour" (aka warforged) but that was after he talked to me and I approved of it (warforged aren't normally in my campaign setting).
One thing I thought was swapping hosts
Kinda like doctor Bright from the SCP foundation, but with mind control instead of straight up killing the host
I ran a campaign once that was all about swapping hosts for Pathfinder 1e, but never for 5e.
This is something more for #character-discussion
sorry. 😦
Hm hm, I'm still reading the manual myself
The whole host thing could be more of a character secret to be revealed later on while the character sheet is built based on the host's background, species and whatnot
I'm not sure its a great idea to keep something like that a secret from your fellow players. And you DEFINITELY can't keep it a secret from your DM. You should generally assume most people will want to play the game with just the base rules and no homebrew. Allowing homebrew species or special powers like this is the exception, not the norm. You should make sure everyone is comfortable with you doing something like that before you just assume that it will be ok
If you're new to the game I'd play with some normal characters before coloring outside the lines as well.
Though if I were your GM, I'd just assign you a monster profile for animated armor and let you play for a while to see if you liked it. 😄

hi all, so im pretty new to dnd, i want to find a game thats good for beginners and preferably a one shot, rather then a full blown days long campaign, at least until i get a feel for things. How would one go about finding a game/gm for that?

Hello fellow newbs
how come i cant use the subclasses from the digital book i own on dndbeyond?
From what I learned, most classes get a subclass at lvl 3
That’s also why most campaigns start at lvl 3
What class and what game version (2014 or 2024)?
when making a sub class it asks for spell type wanting one of the 6 main stats which is darkness?
Do you mean spellcasting stat? Darkness is a level 2 evocation spell
nah it asks for one of the 6 stats like con dex str
Yes that part is under Spell Casting Ability
That will be based on your main class unless you choose to make it different
Rogue does not have an innate spellcasting stat since it doesn’t normally get spells. It is up to you what spellcasting stat your subclass uses
That being said darkness doesn’t force a save anyway
I think they are trying to go for arcane trickster rouge
If they are basing it off of Arcane Trickster then yeah the casting stat will be intelligence
How do you even play DnD... Sorry i dont know anything 😭

Hello! (?) I've played a lot of homebrew dnds and attempted to make my own from experience however, I still have a hard time understanding ALOT of things about dnd so I do hope I can learn more and get a better idea of how the game works!
basic dnd or homebrew?
Both, practically do's and don'ts hopefully
hello hello :3 im new and wanna learn dnd also would like to join a campaign
can you give a quick example
Here on the server we have an lfg system. Check out #find-a-game for how it works.
kk ty
For me, it would be how to understand skills and abilities as players
The quickest practical tip I know in that respect is that it's better to avoid big chunks of homebrew until you know how the rules work. And then, it's best to check out the magic item creation guidelines in the DMG and to compare to existing magic items/features.
The basic rules are explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game
its gonna sound obv but reading the spell lists would prob be the best way to go with that
Is there an audio book of sorts to help me?, I have a hard time reading for a long time or something that feels long
No, mainly because the rules are just that, rulebooks. Not a good fit for audiobook
There are youtube videos that walk you through some of the walls, but to play D&D you will need to read the rules
Critical role made a series that goes over the basic concepts in sequence. They're a little bit dated, but still broadly relevant:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
Thank you!
It's not the same as reading the rulebook though, I have to agree with Davyd.

If you've got your character ready to build, or have questions about their personality or backstory, you can ask in #character-discussion .
So, we re at the end of my first campaign and my character died, so my DM asked me to build a strong character so I can follow up, my main options are sniper owlin, bladesinger, thief, or hex monk, any tips?

@random socket hi!
Hello
I wouldn't recommend using AI to simulate DnD. It will never be able to replicate the experience of playing with actual people, and it's likely to get many of the rules wrong.

Hey, quick question: In a few days, I´m gonna have my first ever game. But it´s been radiosilence from the GM for a while, he even left the thread we used to discuss details. Should I be worried?
I dunno, is this normal? Or did he just abandon the group? Does this happen?
he may have abandoned the group or he may have just have things he needs to attend to
i dunno how to answer your question, i dont know anything about your dm
I guess I´ll wait and see, thanks.
Ghosting is a real thing. I'd reach out. But it may well be that they no longer wish to run that game.
We see stories like that from time to time. Organizing something permanent online is difficult.
It´s only been for 3-4 days. Am I reading too much into it?
Possibly, but it's also good to have realistic expectations.
The rest of the party has been silent too.
Ping the DM. Tell them you're looking forward to the game, ask if there's anything particular you should be preparing, if they need your token art or anything.
I can´t. We´re not friends on Discord and no longer in any groups together, so I can´t ping him.

You (and a couple of friends) are characters in a movie. One friend is the dungeon master, setting up the story for your group. Your decisions, alongside your dice roll, decide the outcome of the story.
Put into the simplest terms, DnD is a collaborative storytelling experience. The Dungeon Master (DM) describes a scene, the players describe what their characters do in that scene, and the DM tells them what happens when they do it. Rinse repeat!
Sometimes, either in combat or doing challenging things, your DM might tell you to roll dice in order to see if your character is successful.
For example, if you want to sneak by the enemy guards, you'll roll a 20-sided die (called a d20) and add some extra numbers based on your character's stats. If the total is high enough, you succeed! In that case, the guard doesn't notice as your character creeps by.

@calm drift I don't think roll20 supports hombrew or i could be wrong.
hello! i’m new to dnd and i don’t know anything at all yet on how to play or the dnd role play rules and such loll, but is there any way to find a group or community that’s based in person for dnd games in this discord? i looked through the #find-a-game channel fully but i don’t see anything involving that, i may of missed something maybe?
and do i have to know the basics before i join a group or anything? i know a bit, like some role names and how u have to role play in it and use dice, but that’s about it sadly lol
The best way to find in-person games is either looking at venues like school clubs, game/hobby stores, and local libraries OR use online tools such as Facebook, MeetUp, and Reddit to search for local groups.
ooooh ok thank you sm, makes sense!
My take is it's better to know more going in. Some may be willing to teach, but don't count on it.
ahh okk
how much should i know? i tried googling and watching videos on it a bit, it still happens to be confusing tho lmao. i know about rolling dice for damage and i think role playing? and some role names

Do you have a gaming store nearby? If so, call and ask if they have Adventurers League games. That's a pretty easy way to get into D&D. Everyone is invited to play and adventures are usually 2-4 hours.

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Hi
ye
It can just be the party, sadly not many party members are active, it's awesome when the party is active! I would not take it personal though, it could just be a very busy week for everyone.
Hey guys, im pretty new to this and im broke, is it possible to play d&d with just my phone and some apps?
If it is possible, please tell me which apps I should use
Thank you
It’ll be a lot easier if you have consistent access to a PC, but the game is able to be played on mobile, and entirely free. The Free Rules can be found in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play , along with a bunch of other useful newbie resources. I recommend making a practice character as you read through.
As for online play, a group will typically need:
- A virtual tabletop to facilitate the game (e.g. battle maps)
- A character sheet hoster
- A die roller
Common VTTs include Owlbear Rodeo and roll20, but ideally you’d wait to see what VTT your group wants to use. Be warned they can be used on phones but tend to not be mobile-friendly. Character sheet hosters can be anything from having your sheet pdf on hand to using an integrated sheet in your group’s VTT. D&DBeyond is the most popular one for this purpose, and it happens to be D&D’s official site. Likewise a bunch of sites have dice rollers, even Google. Most VTTs and D&DBeyond have dice rollers integrated as well.
Mmm
Sweet
Ive yearned to play this for decades, now im finally gonna try for reals
Thanks!
The only dnd groups I've tried to play with didn't allow Gnoll characters so I lost interest
and one starting an campegin im so boardddddd
Gnolls aren't an official player option. Its good to keep an open mind with character ideas especially when you're just starting out. Not every player character pitch works for every campaign world.
None of the friends I know that play dnd play official, they just have super specific settings
Nuuuu I liked the sergal
Yeah sadly gnolls arnt a official race not sure if there is a book that contains em tho
The sergal?
Your avatar was a sergal or somthing close to it anyways that’s off topic
Yeah that's my account pfp lol, inside dnd topics It's a gnoll
Gnolls are evil so you will get push back off a lot of DMs to have one as a PC, maybe work with the DM to have some other form of fur based race that fits their campaign
Well yeah, gnolls being inherently evil and not available for a pc in the majority of campaigns is the main reason I've struggled to get into dnd
The best "workaround" on being able to play a Gnoll is to use the Custom Lineage Species as it is designed to fit whatever you want for a character not part of any existing species to make your own. But it is important to talk to your DM if they are okay with that
There are other races like tabaxi and kobolds
Or say the gnoll was transplanted into Toril from everon
I’m already getting flashed with words I don’t know, hello people of Dungeons and Dragons
Welcome lol
I don't know what half these words mean but kobolds are neat
Take any race and glue some fur on them (with DM permission)
Getting to set on a certain PC can restrict your campaign options so you’ve got to be flexible sometimes
I have to learn whether or not I want to play DnD or I don’t. I want to make a fantasy novel or comic
But that doesn't solve the problem in the slightest
Your problem is you only want to play one race which is homebrew, so you’ve got to find a compromise with your DM
Well yeah, but I don't even have a dm currently lol
hallo. new here.
i’m glad this convo came up because i made my first character a gnoll 😭 can they be a tabaxi instead? do most dm’s accept that race?
Tabaxi is offical so more chance that they will allow it
Yeah they are litterly cat people so yes
great thank you!! i literally have no idea what i’m doing, i’m just starting out :p
Ew cat people (/j)
Hey I’m new-ish to dnd and I would like learn how to make a campaign and I would also like to meet new people and make new friends so hello
I’s start with a basic dungeon crawl. Make a few rooms. A few traps. A bunch of creatures in each room, and a boss or two at the end!
But imho battle and dungeon crawl is only a part of d&d.
The big part of it is roleplay, and an existing campaign gives a lot of very easy background to play into that.
So i downloaded dnd beyond and created a simple character and now what do i do.
If you feel like you have a rough idea of the game rules (specifically how to make a character sheet, understand what's what on said sheet, and understand a D20 test (attack roll/saving throw/skill check)) - then I'd say lookg for a group to play with.

Have a look at #learn-to-play
Thank you good sir
A friend of mine that sent me the link to this server also told me to download dnd beyond
Wut is that
it's the official 'companion app' for dnd, you could say. It allows you to have quick access to characters you build on D&D Beyond, the website.
You can also just use the website without the app though, or play D&D on paper without any digital tools.
Good to know

The Free Rules link in the bot post above this one has the core of the rules. Chapter 1 covers probably 75% of the basic mechanics, with Chapter 2 being about how you build your character. think of Chapter 3 as the "instruction manual" for each of the core classes - you wouldn't be responsible for knowing all of the chapter, just the parts about how your particular character works.
But yeah sadly your shooting yoyrself in the foot by wanting to play a spesific race. There are others like Dragonborn, kenku and one other that are birds, lizard men, kobolds, tabaxi, rabbit people. Ext

Check the links above.
Beast barbarian subclass with just normal human could give the same effect.
I think beast barbarian could be good compromise, then just use normal human what do you think?
Don't worry about the character yet, just learn the game.
For him, just giving best choice from what I would do.
Which may be moot if the DM doesn't allow shifters.
Learn the rules of the game first.
That is why I suggest normal human with beast barbarian as second option.
Those are the only ways being a werewolf is not an option typically, if you get bitten you won’t have control of your character so..again don’t shoot your self in the foot. By fixating on a single idea. Sometimes it takes multiple drafts to find one you like better.
I would go more basic myself tho, becoming were wolf might not be best idea for your time.
You could also just be a druid and literally turn into a wolf with wildshape 😁
That as well
Actuly can you actuly become a owlbear as a wild shape? Or was just just a bg3 deal?
That was a movie/BG3 exception
Owlbears are still Monstrousities.
Ahhh I was curious if that was the case…

What?
if youre new, try playing with other new people, its easiest to learn through playing
plus, unless its really experienced ppl playing, a dm should defo help their players
If you go to a new table without knowing a thing it will slow things down because the DM will have to pause the game to explain the fundamentals to you. Help the DM by learning the basics.
Be nice to the DMs.
If your a new player most DM's will be forgiving, but try to learn as much as possible.
of course, learn the fundamentals. that being said, dms will obv help u if ur stumped on smth
It will take a while to find a table to play at so you might as well learn how the game works.
exactly
Dont be scared of not knowing every rule.
So I'm trying to figure this out in the PHB under wizard equipment do you choose 1 item or 1 item from every section
(a. Quarterstaff or dagger
(a. Component pouch or arcane focus
(a. Scholar or explorer pack
A spellbook
Can I choose like a quarter staff only or do I get 1 from each line
You choose from one from each.

alright thx
Kind of an odd question but, maybe not. I used to play back in 3.5 regularly and have played a couple 5e one shojts, but my job makes a regular campaign impossible. Do any of you know of groups that run one shots that one could jump into when they have time?
You'd want to check out #looking-for-players for open games. People do post one shots there so some may be open.
Last time I played standard DnD was red box back in 98 lol I am very out of touch.
I played TT brand (X) for 17 years, just got tired of everything. Wanted to migrate to either Beyond or 5e..idk. I really don't know the differences
So I regestered as New to D&D...wich is true.
So DnDBeyond is a digital toolkit and currently only supports 5th edition which is the current D&D edition
Not to RP, just to the system.
I'd recommend checking out the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ah so Beyond is basicly the digital version of 5e then
Yeah - like it's a bunch of tools (like digital character sheets) and a way to digitally access the books, have a shared dice rolling log (character sheets can roll digital dice), and there's some tools for DMs like Encounter Builder and Maps.
They also have Avrae, a D&D Discord bot that can connect your DnDBeyond sheets to Discord
So the dice rolls can get poped into a Discord channel
2 from background + 2 from class is standard
Some classes (rogue) will have extra proficiencies and humans get an extra proficiency
I only know a little about it just through watching PAX when Acquisitions Incorporated was doing D&D Next. I have followed along with D&D streams for years. I just recently decided to make the change over.
But Never got to be a player...what I have done is be forced to be GM for (X) since 2014 to now. Recently quit and decided to switch fully to get away from it. Hence, why I am here.
Will prob never want to DM though.
Kinda PTSD at this point
Always good to take breaks.
If you're looking for a group to join you can look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I will prob hang out for a few days before I register to play. As I need to recover from the trauma of going through 3 other discord servers first and am really run down atm.
Its why I came to the official server.
Whats the difference between "Traditional" and "Community" games??
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
So I don't see anything in the PHB is there a certain way to determine how much your character can carry
thank you. i'm so new, i don't even know how to ask lul.
Traditional would be DM plus players, Community is a larger group playing games with lots of players and DMs
Many folks are fine with new players but it helps to have a rough idea of the game rules and how to use your character sheet.
Also feel free to look through the info in #find-a-game
The largest I have ever done was when I was a GM for a group of 12, that was brutal....never again lol
are you a gm? @lyric fjord
They are taking a break
Nope. retired.
Retiring...rather. 4 more to go. I'm a paid GM for a community anti-gang program for troubled teens. Its...rough.
I like DM'ing but also I only run one group right now and they are a pretty chill group (and personal friends).
why is it ptsd for you to dm/gm?
I ran a group of 10 teenagers for an entire adventure (Wild Beyond the Witchlight).
It was chaotic and exhausting.
Some parts were amazing and fun but also I completely understand why it would burn someone out.
i'm looking at the #looking-for-community and #looking-for-players and a little overwhelmed as to the different styles
Try #looking-for-players for now
how many styles are there in DND? and how can i ensure i get into the right one which i'll have fun lul
There are as many styles of D&D as there are groups playing D&D
Oh lol, I was a player for 2 years, played 3 characters. Then was a GM off and on from 2014 to today, so I haven't played a character since 2014. The group I GM for because of the way its set up I am not allowed to kick anyone out if they misbehave and they are troubled teens so you can imagine. But I have drifted through like 4 servers and have been berated out of them because of being "paid" or the fact my campaign is a "home brew" and I basically rat-conned everything and have my own story. Its a fork of (X). But I have been brutally berated over all of it, any of it.
Have you read the free basic rules? That will give you an idea of what to expect in a game.
do you guys have any dnd style reccs for newcomers?
is it this one #dnd-rules ?
Well I'd first focus on learning the core game rules and mechanics vs styles of play

thanks y'all. as someone with adhd, this is absolutely the worst way for me to learn since i'm more hands on. but gotta do some chore work of reading and learning ig.
but thank you for the sources.
You can also check out the videos if that helps: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
oh dang. biggest burn outs has a lot to do with the people themselves IMO. and i mean this generally. sorry to hear that you went through that. hopefully you can just relax.
ty
I was asked to run this program because I used to be part of an anti-gang education program. But the nerd hate from the TT community has been horrific and isolating over silliness.
:c sorry to hear that
Its ok, its just expected at this point. I wanted to give it one last try so I came here.
Came to as close to the source as I could
did you find anything yet?
I got here 5 min before you did haha
oh LOL
The contract for me has been 11 sessions, they are 2 hours. its once a week. I already told them that I wont be continuing. But yea, its burn out.
And it breaks my heart becouse my homebrew has been going since 2014 and I felt like I wasted a great campaign for nothing.
It really hurts
Well put it away for a season and go hang out and play as a player for bit
It will be there when you're ready to DM again
The way my home brew is is it could very easily be re-tooled into any system, any other TT. Its not really tied into anything. .
Would literally need to change the name of like...1 deity. that's it.
We should probably take this to another channel as we need to keep this one clear for folks new to D&D to get started with learning the core rules and game mechanics
(1 diety in my homebrew that is)
I need to go focus on other moderation duties but take a look at #channel-guide to see the many channels we have for specific topics
Yea I want to approach D&D as knowing nothing, and be treated as such. "All I know is I know nothing"
Only time I ever played standard D&D was literally Red Box. Quite litterally D&D 1.0 lol
And even that was back in 1998
Thank you UN
Are there any classes for specifically rolling character sheets? Because that is where I want to begin in my learning process.

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Just briefly poking back in here - hope the above helps!
Nope, but I will take it.

Hey I am really new to DnD entirely, tried to play a while back but the group never stuck. Any advice before starting another DnD sesh? I understand the basics
Unfortunately that happened sometimes, don’t blame yourself or the gm(unless it’s a paid on and they arnt saying anything.) sadly some people don’t mesh well so
Besides remembering you’re not a main character and to work with others, besides that have fun
Appreciate it! Im trying to build my character rn but have zero Idea on what I want XDD
hello I am new where can I play some D&D??
If you want to use this server to find a game check out #find-a-game
anywhere to just learn more about dnd a bit? There's like 5 different editions and a lot of manuels/books not sure what would be good to start on
5e is the most current
ah alrighty
Keep in mind there are the 2014 rules and the 2024 rules most people may be changing over but most are sticking to 2014
i've seen some say there's issue with 2024
Hi y'all! I am looking to invest in a few books for DnD Beyond. Does anyone know if there are typically Valentine's Day sales? I don't see one announced on their IG for last year. Just trying to determine if I want to wait another week or just pick em up now. I have a campaign on Wednesday.
Y'all, I want to play some DND, preferably online cuz I live in a small town. Halp me
How can i get the new free Hold back the dead?
You need to go through the store page on ddb: https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/category/DB0000157
Hello, I'm still fairly new to DnD. I was wondering, are the recommended books under #learn-to-play strictly necessary? Could I get by perfectly fine without them until I have gotten deeper into the game, or are they highly recommended for most DnD campaigns?
In terms of learning the game, the Free Rules have you covered. Everything past that just adds options.
Alright, thank you!
Do you want a hand with the rules or finding a group to play with?
how to online? is there a game?
do I have to find it or do I make a discord server and have vc there
If you want to learn about the game...

no like how to play itself?
then, maybe finding a grp
Alley Ham's message just above will get you started with the Free Rules and some helpful videos.
I don't think Valentine's Day gets a sale, but I think there's often one in the spring. Not sure if you want to hold off for that (assuming it even happens).
Yeah just keep watching the #dnd-announcements and #dnd-social-feeds and the DnDBeyond website (top banner) for any potential sales.
Ah yes, I can't wait for the release of Astarion's Tips for Romance.
Ok soo what books do i need to buy?
Nothing! You can get started with just the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If you like the game, then you can consider buying books.
And usually a good one to start with would be the Players Handbook.

Inam level 20 can I still use the skills from my mange character sheet that are no longer there
Are you using D&D Beyond for your character sheet?
Yes
There are no longer skil under the character sheet mange character can I still use them even though I don’t see them
Which skills are you referring to?
Under the mange character there were skill at level 1 can I still use them
I can take a photo and show you if it let me
You get as you level up
You mean the skills you get from your class, background, and/or species when you initially make a character?
Yes
You still get to use them. They will appear on your sheet under the skills section unless you manually remove them for some reason
Or have yet to choose them
As I level up some went missing
Like which ones?
I thought I had skill that let me add extra dice and more one
I must be crazy and seeing things
Got it, thanks! And definitely don't want to hold off too long. I'm transitioning over to DnD Beyond and will just accumulate reference materials over time. I just picked up 2014 and 2024 PHB for now and I'll maybe wait till the spring sale to pick up Tasha's and stuff. I can do those by hand for now.
That was not a skill then, that was a feature
In which case you would go to your features tab
Ok I will try
so this may sound like a dumb question ive never played but attempting too make a character what is your ability score
im doing wizard and it says at level 4 i can increase 1 ability score by 2
your ability score is one of your six abilities (Strength, Dexterity, etc) and their score number. At level 4 you get the option to add 1 to two or add 2 to one ability score, increasing your ability score to help you add points to your ability checks

hey, quick question: the looking-for-players thread seems to be mostly longer campaigns; where should I look for one-shots?
You can find games in plenty of places such as Roll20, LFG on Reddit, or the D&D Beyond forums.
thanks
Really stupid question I apologize in advance. I just bought the monster manual for the 2024 edition of 5e and I read online that everything is cross compatible. Does that mean I can use creatures from the new MM in a campaign that is primarily using 2014 rules. Or will my party face difficulties/struggles?
You can use both the 2014 materials and 2024 materials together.
For the most part I doubt your party would even notice a significant difference if you switched from using 2014 monsters to 2024.
Yeah. You may need to adjust things but that has more to do with knowing your players and their characters then anything specifically different between 2014 and 2024 materials.
Okay awesome thank you both :3 that’s what I was hoping
Everyone in our party has different opinions on the rules and I’ve been so confused some are using 2014 some are using 2024 lol
I would try to standardize them if you can. On the player facing side there’s generally a bigger power disparity between a 2014 and 2024 character than a PC facing a 2014 vs 2024 monster
The only person who should know the monster statblocks is you the DM. As DM, you're not obligated to use the published statblock of monsters but you can homebrew. I do this to keep my players (who have only played 5E) on their toes by having monsters be more influeced by older edtions' versions.
The 2024 MM essentially cleans up and streamlines the monsters' statblocks for ease of use for the DM.
I would like to use more homebrewed monsters I’m just concerned I won’t have enough experience to tune them in a reasonable way
I feel like I’ll make them either very powerful or two weak
Don't worry homebrewing for now. You can reflavour/reskin monsters.
If you want DMing advice then head on over to #dm-discussion
Okay thanksss
ngl, I’m tryna look for an active server that’s doing a One Piece DND campaign but I found dead servers everywhere
its tragic

Which channel do I use
Read #find-a-game carefully
OK
Whenever I go to the looking for players channel it says I dont have permission to send messages
You have not read #find-a-game carefully enough then!
You don't actually post in the LFG channels except through the bot commands.
You can direct message posters or use the thread attached to their post to communicate interest in their game
But yea, you don't actually post normally in the LFG channels.
Helpful hint - to get started with the bot, type /looking-for in any channel you can type in.
I clicked the shortcut for looking for players will it automatticly go to the looking for players channel?
when I hit submit?
Yes - when you run the /looking-for players command the bot will give you a form to fill out to submit a post in #looking-for-players . That channel is for DM's to look for players for their game.
You would want to use the /looking-for dm comamnd
To create a post in #looking-for-dm to tell folks you're looking for a group/DM
ok
Does that make sense?
yes I think so
If you're a player you can simply look through posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and #paid-looking-for-game to find a game that looks interesting and then either direct message the poster or use the thread under the post to indicate you're interested.
im new and i just created my first character and i want someone to check if i did this right can someone check it?
You can post a link to your character sheet here or in #character-discussion for folks to review what you got.
oh ok thx

is there any session where i could gain experience available?
or any specific site?
bc i have tried the dndbeyond.com site and it has utterly overwhelmed me
You can find a group/game in our LFG channels - please read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use them
It would help through to become a little bit familiar with the game rules though and how to read/use a character sheet: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
There is also a small interactive game that tries to show you how a game might be played: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
i have made myself a character tho
and i have played the game
i guess that its just the amount of information
i will read the lfg instructions and hopefully find a game
thank you
there are just so many rules and so much to read through
Take your time reading them. You don't need to memorize them all. You just need to familiarize how the game runs.
There is! But you don't have to read all of it. The most important things are in the first chapter of the rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game
And you should also read up on the abilities your character has.
The rules are there to be referenced. I've been playing D&D for 40+ and I don't remember all the rules. I look them up when I need to.
how long does a game last?
Game or session?
session
Do you mean how long does a single play session last? It depends, but you can safely assume about 2-5 hours.
Mine are three hours long.
and do i generally pay per game or per sessions?
It's up the DM and the players to agree on the length of time for a session.
That depends on the DM. Most DMs don't charge but there are paid DMs who charge by the session.
I have a group which only meets like once per month on average but we do 6-7 h sessions
good to know!
thank you :)

Can anyone help im still confused on what im to do
I love druids
A good first step is to read the free basic rules which you can find in the bot post above you.
Hey. I’ve been a player for some time now. Bout a year or so. My brothers are looking to learn how to play so I’m taking it upon myself to be a DM. Any advice on what campaigns I should have them run?
It’s only 2 players and I’m giving them each a sidekick from TCoE. But first time players with a first time DM. What module should I run?
The Starter Set is a good place to start.
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Youtube is a great resource as well. Just search "How to Play D&D" or "D&D for beginners".
@spare plinth Just sherch on google dnd short campains or one shots depending on your style.
Not a newcomer to dnd but rather this server…I was wondering if there was a place (even elsewhere) for text-based dnd games, ideally over a week+ (not a couple hours straight)?
We don’t allow soliciting for games in the discussion channels here. Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a group/game. read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use those LFG channels.
I apologize, I had not realized. I did check there originally but it appears that you can’t message in the channels, and chose this to post my question as it seemed closest to a “general” channel.
You can direct message the game poster or use the thread attached underneath the game posting to message that you're interested. I have already seen a couple of Play By Post games posted so they are definitely there. Good luck finding a great group to play with!
so im curious with mage armour it says you can give magic armour to a willing creature does that count as you or people on your team or is it jsut like a minion or something aside of you
It can be yourself. As long as you can touch the creature and they want the mage armor
so since i cant wear armour thats almost like a way to give you armour and be able to still use your magic
this is my first character ever so im trying to find best wizards spells
Yea. It works perfectly fine. Though I will say this. As a wizard you want to be far ranged. If you’re in a fight. If you can move farther and farther away from fight you want to do that lol. As long as you are in range to still use your damage spells, back up
In other words… if you are relying on your mage armor… you’re in a pickle lol. But it’s a good spell nonetheless
yea i chose the school of evocation so been trying to mostly still to evocation spells
the spells ive had the hardest wiht i finished my cantrips and i have chromatic orb and magic missile as my first to lvl 1
Ok then that’s good so far. You’re level 1 right?
yup havent played ever and the campaign im joining isnt for a couple weeks
so trying to set all my spells
i did a high elf wizards school of evocation and designed my spellbook
Ok then. Make sure to talk to your DM about the spells you have in your spell book. First time I played wizard I added too many spells for my spell book and it became a problem lol
i have the PHB and he is going off the chart in that
Oh, perfect then. But when it comes to your prepared spells. It’s good to have a mixture of combat and just regular adventuring spells. Balance is key
How many spells do you get to prepare?
yea i have like my cantrip i have mending and mage hand and light
then fire blast acid splash and ray of frost
so 3 damage 3 helping items
Yea that’s good. Do you know if you’re using 2014 or 2024?
this book i have is older i know that
trying to save up to buy 2024 book
being my first run ive had lots to buy plus he wants to do things on table like our characters and monsters
Ok then. Lemme check the 2014 versions of some spells. Cause Toll the Dead and Mind Sliver are also really good cantrips. But lemme check if you get them and if they are still good
neither of those are in wizard spot in my book
They aren’t!? Damn those are good
But ok then. Point I wanted to make was that it’s good to have some spells that you roll to attack. And others that have them roll. In case their AC is high but they have low saves
i know a couple spells they have to make saving throws it says
i roll for damage but they have to roll for safety
Yea. Those type of spells are good to have. Gives you more diversity and flexibility which is most important for a wizard. Do you need help selecting anymore spells are do you feel confident with them?
im trying to read as many as i can i know i still need to find 2 1st lvls then 2nd through 5th level i have to find 3 6th and 7th lvl is 2 and 8th and 9th is 1 each
and i did my ability rolls and my start is Str 11 Dex 12 Con 15 Int and WIS 18 and charisma 14
Yea but you don’t have to read every spell. Only read the ones you are able to get. No point in reading 4th level spells if you can’t get them yet
Oh wow. That’s really good INT!
yea i got lucky on my dice rolls
so trying to see if any spells get more damage based on those high levels
Oh well as you go higher on spell level the damage gets absolutely crazy lol. But don’t worry about it too much. Just focus on the spells you can get now. As you level up you’ll get a chance to read on them see which ones you like
I will say though… my favorite spell in the game is Thunderwave … a simple first level spell that does good damage… good AoE control and has so much room for flavoring
i was just about to check that spell lol
Oh. Shield and Sleep are also REALLY good to have. Shield is well… a shield. Keeps you alive if you’re going against a hard hitting creature. And Sleep is amazing against though low hp mobs
honestly was half debating this tenser;s floating discs
like a way to get up higher and figured maybe i could lift myself to be able to fight without melee creatures able to hit me
It’s not that bad. But honestly I’ve never seen it in play. But it’s a good strategy if you get bombarded
Like I said though. Try to play back line. Like BACK back line lol.
i think my closest skill is 30 ft a lot are 90 or 120
Yea that’s about right lol
Do you know the make up of your team?
Like what class they are?
no not at all i know one other person is a druid
Tenser doesn't lift you out of melee range unfortunately. Only 3 ft. above the ground
With 18 Wis why not be a Cleric?
Ahhh can’t have a change of 10ft elevation. Damn that sucks
i did my rolls after i had set up most my character and being my first i didtn want to restart
Well. It puts him out of reach for small guys. That’s about it
i dont know how high a player can jump because jump seems it could be good maybe for what i thought tensers could do
jump 3 times my normal and jumnp on something if its near
but i have 2 damage so was trying to find 2 helpful lvl 1 spells
Well if you were on Tensers they wouldn’t need to jump to hit you. The spell says you can’t be above the ground more than 10ft. A medium size creature (player character size) is atleast 5ft tall with 5ft reach. So you’d be it. If the creature is less then 5ft then you would be out of their range
And if you’re going for non combat spells. Identify, and detect magic are good
what about the feather fall
Lemme look at the spell list to see if there are any other good ones I can’t think of right now
It’s good but it’s very situational. If you are in an environment with a lot of elevation it’s amazing. But I’ve been in campaigns where it would never be used
So ask your DM about that. I’m sure they’ll be honest with you for that one
the most i know so far is its a nature fey world
So there’s a lot of good spells you can use. Charm Person and Disguise self are really good for social encounters. Detect magic and find familiar are good exploration spells. And identify and comprehend languages are good lore spells
And yea. Feather fall would be exploration aswell. And like i said. Talk to them about it and see if they think it would be a useful spell to grab
This is where more of character story or personality kinda kicks in. What do you think your character would be more into and how would they use these spells? That’s how I personally decide spells
Does your DM have you roll stats in order?
my backstory is folk hero but i was man of the land that loved the land but in order to help my town i went in search of a fey creature for power but in getting the power either the fire fey creatured died or it was trapped in the orb of my quartertaff and now we are one
and i just rolled 6 numbers and chose what i wanted to put them in
more with my story becuase of the fey creature dying or being trapped it destroyed my home land
Ah I see. If your DM is using rolling for stats then I assume it'd be ok to swap the int and wis, but it's not the end of the world if you don't
Ooo that’s cool. Well by the sound of it your character enjoys exploration being that he is a man of the land. So choosing those might be more so linked to personality. If you want to play more so into your power coming from the fey then social interactions might be fun cause fey are all about that lol
yea thats why im trying to stick with fire because my fey was a fire fey so my main element is fire
so i have tried to make lots to keep all my stuff flowing together
No yea. I like making characters in that same idea. Well I would say this then. Remember that you’re a wizard and meant to be the most flexible and diverse character. You can choose one social encounter spell and one exploration encounter spell and get to show both your character’s personality and a taste of his fey origin
Or. You can stick with one all the way and favor one of the 2. Obviously you can just bail from both of them and go to lore spells. But character wise I feel like that’s the least attractive option lol
i think i will go with sleep for sure as my 3rd 1st level
i do my lvl 9 has to be meteor swarm
lol one step at a time. While meteor swarm is a beautiful spell that’s a longs way away. Focus on the low level spells until you get close to that
yea i just wrote down all the evocation spells for each lvl to have an idea for my school of evocation
and thats the only lv l 9 one
so i read it and its a fire storm basically
Yea. It’s a beautiful spell lol. Also. Before I forget. Since you’re choosing sleep another spell to consider is Tasha’s hideous laughter. It’s a lot like sleep but it targets only one person. But it functionally does the same thing
Just something to think about if not for now then for later levels
Looking for community game
Never been in one😅
i dont get how this sleep works does it do damage
or do the 5d8 the creatures hit points it need to be that or less to sleep it
So no. No damage. But if you have a rouge they will LOVE you for this lol.
You roll the dice. Let’s say you get 35 (just a random number) now let’s say your fighting 8 goblins that each have 5 health. 7 of those goblins would fall asleep because 7x5 is the the number you rolled
Is that making sense?
ok so its like a health total so if i roll 60 and 1 monster is 60 hp it wiould sleep 1
but if i rolled 60 and 6 10hp mobs all would sleep
Check #find-a-game
Yes! Now the only thing is this. You cannot choose who gets targeted first. By rules the hp pool must start from the lowest hp creature
yea i seen that part
And if you can’t fully match a creatures hp. Even if you are only down one. Then it can’t sleep
The reason it is so good though is because they stay asleep for a whole minute. Which doesn’t sound like much until you realize that no combat encounter ever lasts that long. And if I remember correctly… any hit against a sleeping creature counts as a critical hit
in my head it feel like a boss fight thing with mobs this would be good
like sleep the mobgs fight the boss
Yes. It’s a really good way to control the intensity of the fight. But it’s just as useful at low level. If the combat is starting to get a bit scary and your front line fighters aren’t looking to good. Throw this bad boy down and it’s a walk in the park as you take out the group one by one while never worrying about getting attacked back
Yea. Like I keep saying, wizard is all about flexibility and diversity. You want to have something for everything, but that’s impossible at low level cause there is only so many spells you can have. So start with what you think is most important or most aligned with your character and build from there
@fast citrus I was just going through some cantrips and Mind Sliver and Toll the Dead are wizard cantrips but they aren’t in the base players handbook. (2014 version that is) one is in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (TCoE) and the other is in Xanthars Guide to Everything (XGtE) ask your DM and they might just let you take those cantrips into your spell book if you really want them
ill see if i can do that
Well it was nice talking to you. But I’m off to bed. Have a good night and have fun with the character!
Anyone on?
So im going to play test my campain should I write the ideas of the test players down or interprit it in my own way?
