They're not free and don't imply that they're free (against server rules...).
got it
Only the Free Rules and Basic Rules are free.
ok so yeah, the basic and free rules are enough if you are a beginner, if you want more buy phb and dmg
sorry for my mistake im new to dnd too
ummmm hello???
hi
ive never played beforew

well there are many different vtts, not just roll20
Don't worry about playing online. Learn the rules of the game first.
you can also play through theater of mind, but yeah learn the rules first and play the game second
The DM decides how the games are played online.
whats theatre of mind
Your imagination.
imagination
Yes?
can someone call me so i can get help im soooooooooo confuzzled
You should start with reading the free basic rules which are linked in the bot post
Did you read the Free Rules yet?
There are dozens of new players joining every day. It's not feasible to give private one-on-one tutorials. Read the Free Rules at your own pace.

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
is that easier than going through that link?
You can ask questions here about stuff you don't understand.
You will need to read the rules eventually. D&D is a game of rules.
ik how to create a character but idk anything else
Read the Free Rules.

ah there you are dyno
same bro... same
The server doesn't have the capacity to teach people 1 on 1. We can help with questions about the rules as you read them. And we can offer advice or suggestions if needed.
yeah
if you have questions about its rules come here
we cant do one on one teaching lessons
Some people may have the capacity, but it can take a lot to teach dozens of people each day and most people don't have the bandwidth to do that.
i dont do very well doing things on my own
Then watch the tutorial videos I linked earlier.
im autistic so its hard for me to communicate what i need and dont need
that doesnt mean that its just me who needs help
You mentioned a local D&D club. If you're looking for help learning the rules, I think that would be a great place to start and to meet other people interested in the game.
and i dont want people to say "theres other people like u aswell u know" cos i know
oh moderators
huh?
there was a guy who posted a scam
oh
Hey guys, i am reading a bit of the chat, but i am very new to this. Started playing Baldurs gate 3 and loved it. In your opinion, is it possible for me to start as a DM with a group of friend that are also new to this? Or should i play some games before hand?
Probably better to learn the game as a player IMO. Learn how to play and mistakes on the DM's dime.
you can start as a dm, but i recommend playing a few games before
i did that and now im dming my own campaign
i would love to start my own campain. Curently faling in the DM rabithole on Youtube. It does sound like a lot of work
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
DMing is a lot of work (compared to being just a player).
yeah
its like playing the game vs coming up with the game
i do like the narration part better than the combats and making al the choices
yeah
You play every NPC and monster that's not the PCs.
This should be more suited for #dm-discussion
yeah agreed
thanks anyway guys
So long you you have the rules and understand some basics your fine.
I recommend starting with a pre written adventure.
Tales from the yawning portal has the sunless citidel. Which gives you a script if you want.
Lost mines or any adventure starter set is also a good starting point for the gm bug
Those require the lest rework to run
ive had a look in the #looking-for-players channel but i could not find one that i could join as i live in the uk
hey! i am looking for some kind of tutorial to get a subclass from the book into my dnd beyond (homebrew)
There are a lot more players than DMs so finding a game can take some time. Best advice I can offer is to be patient and check open games regularly. You can also look like the D&D Beyond forums or Roll20 for open online games.
Ye the hardest job as a gm: getting players lol
being excited for a session and then everyone cancels
i joined dnd because someone was talking about it in an rp server, I watched a 20 minute video about dnd

"If you've only just discovered D&D, you might be the only person you know who wants to play"
cool..
you can always make a request for people to play with you in the lfg channels
But don’t despair. D&D is more popular now than it’s ever been before, and there are plenty of ways to find a gaming group.
i got really lucky with my friend group
with one of my friend being an avid dnd player, and people who are willing to try it out
anyway you may convince your friends to play but youd still have to have an experienced player be the dm
or just the bravest friend
Hi. Can I anyone let me know the best way to play online or on here or someway I can join a game. Do I need to create a character first. I am a complete noob
Hello, is there any campain that would let in a completle new player like i mean litearly only saw dnd on YouTube and doesnt even know how too create a character (i have a character idea but dont know how too do the stats)

Ok
Oh dear god that's a lot, but thankfully my bingewatching of dnd campains makes it preaty understandebal
It can be a lot and luckily, you don't need to know all the rules perfectly to play. If you are planning to DM, then you should try and learn them as best you can but as a player you can have a little wiggle room.
Always good to have the books on hand to reference a rule though
Oh yeah that's the good part about dnd and its enciclopidia of a rule book, its common "ok and...uhhhhhhhhh checks book this"
But the good part is that i already have a character in mind, and no its not a human fighter named steve
Yeah i think i could pull of joining a campain...now too find one
I did dm you
may i ask where to play dnd?
Oh ok
If you want to play in person then check your local game shops, school game clubs, and/or local Facebook D&D groups.
If you want to play online then check #find-a-game
can anyone help me create my first dnd charachter
thanks
The free rules will have what you need stat gen will be different between gms

The booklet is actually very short compared to the full rules. The stuff in the Starter Set is just a "demo" and not the full game.

Hello! I'm new to D&D.I have one of the rule books from the essentials kit and I've watched a bunch of videos on how to play, but I've never played a session. I was wondering if anyone could teach me how to play? I haven't made a character sheet yet, but I have an idea of what I'd like to do, but I'm not entirely sure if I'd be making it correctly.
Please scroll up and check out the resources in the embeds just above you
Alright thank you :)
Feel free to ask specific questions but do note many of us don't have time and bandwidth to teach folks D&D one on one.
The more effort you put in to read, watch, and learn on your own - and feel free to ask specific questions as you're learning - the easier it is for us to help you out and the eaiser it is for you to be able to find a game since the group won't have to teach you everything on the fly.
I'll make sure I learn as much as I can on my own :)
Hello! I am newish to DMing, and I'm finally doing my first boss that my players are fighting, sadly, I have been completely distracted and have not done any research on how to actually make a boss, and I'm not sure where to look to make it.
the folks in #dm-discussion could probably helo you out.. but you likely don't have to make a boss yourself, just choose something from the monster manual
i kinda do since im recreating a boss from a video game
You go girl✨👏

I looked at that area but didn't know where to use any of the commands
any channel you can type in (like this one)
Ah gotcha... Thanks!
gonna stop looking for a sunday table for a week or two
simply because im waiting for my friend to decide if hes gonna have sundays free and join me in the search
New to D&D would love to game!!
hi Hollow!
Okay let’s try this again. Hello d&d players, I am new here.
Fight seem too basic but it's good tho
welcome!
Heya. I played before rhe storm and while it was easy to understand, I don’t get the dice
dice in dnd are pretty simple for the most part
Maybe I’m just dumb
the vast majority of the time you just roll a d20 and add the relevant bonuses
so for an attack you would add whichever stat you’re attacking with and your proficiency bonus
for a saving throw you would add whichever stat you’re being forced to make the save with and your proficiency bonus if it applies
damage rolls are different though cus they use all sorts of dice, that depends on the weapon or spell you use to deal damage
nah dnd is a complicated game, you shouldnt expect to understand all of it instantly
Does anyone have a suggestion on what type of character would be good for a beginner? Or is that something I make after joining a game?
It is generally best to make your character while keeping the team and the campaign in mind.
anything is fine for a beginner tbh but martials would be easiest
Otherwise, the "simple" classes are the non-spellcasting ones. Fighter, barbarian...
yeah a lot of people make their characters before joining a campaign but thats knowing what a dm would normally expect and understanding that they might have to make changes to fit the campaign
Ah alright. I think I'll make one when I join a game and one before too
I really wanna get the new players guidebook. I like the art
yeah no harm making one for practice in the meantime, thats how i started out
Thank you both :)
Make some character concepts that you would like to play, find the one that fits to the party you will be with
In the before the storm mini game, is the person who’s giving us the options supposed to represent the dm?
Yes
Ok. I'll do that. Thanks
yo hi people am as new as they come if any one lets me join there story or how it goes (I think it's mostly adventures that you take in a tavern) idk how this game works I now it is about mostly imagining scenarios and that is why I want to join. if any one is wiling to walk me throe this thanks for the struggle

ok
I played the game super fun on to how does it work
A DM and a group of players figure out a schedule, the DM designs or uses a prebuilt adventure, and the players create characters and produce character sheets. Group meets and the DM sets the stage and guides the adventure, asking for dice rolls and making rulings as needed and appropriate, runs combat encounters, runs the NPCs/monsters. Players roleplay their characters and tell the DM what their character does in the presented situation, rolls dice when asked by the DM (often to see if the character succeeds in a possibly risky move/action), and together the group collaboratively tells/experiences a story through an RPG game.
thanks for taking you time to help me bless you and you hart 👍 ❤️
there are no players in my area
🥲
wait it was a local store link I clicked+
Go to #looking-for-players , maybe there's some game who can catch your interest and they can let you join!
For someone new and do not have any of the books. Is it better to buy the 2024 player's handbook or is somehow the 2014 handbook is better by some reason?
its personal preference
I would say if you're new, don't by either and instead use the D&D Free Rules
If you reach the point you really want to buy a book, I'd personally recommend the 2024 Player's Handbook
Layout is better, information is clearer, and the options are pretty much all improvements over their 2014 counterparts
Also the game going forward is going to be designed with the 2024 rules more in mind than the 2014 rules
tbh i’d say read the differences between the rulesets and decide which one you’d prefer before you spend any money
dnd books are expensive and you dont wanna get one you’ll end up not using
Thanks
Does anyone know what the difference is between traditional games and community games?
Hey everyone! I’m a new player looking to get into D&D. I’ve got an idea for a bard character I’m really excited to play, and I’ve done a lot of research into the rules. Is anyone here looking for someone to join their group, or could you point me in the right direction for finding a group? I move around a lot for work, so I don’t have any friends who play, but I’ve always wanted to get into it. I’ve been living off lore videos for way too long and would love to actually play. Thanks!
A "traditional" game consists of a DM and several players (usualy between 4 and 6) who play D&D on a regular basis (often weekly). It's the same people playing each session
A community game consists of multiple DMs and a pool of players who play in more ad-hoc groups. When people play and who they play with can change from session to session. It's called a community game because it's a community of people playing together
Check out #find-a-game
Now I understand, thank you
How do I be a good dm I have played like five 1 hour sessions as a player but my dm has been too busy to continue the game so I started my own game as dm any tips?
There's no one way to be a good DM, but a good route to it is good communication and listening
all the people that want to buy a book there are no shops for DND near my location
Does anyone know what book the rules for mounts and mounted combat would be I'm and can you read the books your dm has or do you also have to buy them.
PS
Also which book would have the stat blocks for riding horses and other horses
These rules are in the Free Rules, here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#MountedCombat
OK thank you I appreciate your help
OK so I read online on another site that if your mounted and your mount is at least one size bigger than your target of attack you get advantage on that attack is this true? If so where would I find the rules for it so far I can't find it in the free rules
I figured it wasn't I just wanted to make sure it's not in some other book
There is the feat https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats/36-mounted-combatant that gives advantage though
OK their it is thank you so much this makes my character like 3 times better since I'm always mounted 🤣 🤣
How are you always mounted?
So myself, my partner, her sister and our best friend have been playing D&D doing a mini campaign while learning the rules etc.....we have just realised we have been doing the whole DC/ AC, attack rolls, saves all wrong hahah
Hey, I’m also new, what mistakes did you make, I wanna know if I make some?
As long as you had fun, all good. I don't think any game of D&D ever did all the rules perfectly
When in doubt, make it up and look up the rules later.
I'm also curious about the mistake though.
I made a knight so I'm always on my horse beating people with a lance
Unless we're going through a dungeon or something
The name of the game should be a hint that's possibly going to be regular occurance
Hey guys I made my first character, his name is Arthur Silone, a human fighter, who was made an orphan after an Ork attack on his town, and is an ex-soldier for the empire.
What do you think
D&D generally speaking takes place within enclosed spaces; dungeons, caves, castles, city streets, ancient ruins, manor houses
But yeah my roles have been terrible lately and I wanted to take the mounted combat feat but it never showed up so I thought they removed it or it was level locked
So having advantage on basically everything we're fighting would be huge
What do you guys think about my character
i know that bg3 is considered a pretty good way to get an intro to a lot of dnd mechanics, but is divinity original sin 2 also good for the same? (cuz i only own the latter)
Not at all, no. Divinity has completely different assumptions.
#character-discussion might be the best place to ask
oh alright
Its fine.. not an uncommon concept for an adventurer to have. You've given us their background but not really the character building.
Davyd is correct though, beyond a general ask, #character-discussion is best suited to help.
D&d has orcs rather than orks but people do that all the time
We were doing it if DM has a creature with AC14 and we use a range or melee attack....we need 14 or higher to "hit" [ adding tthe "Hit/DC" bonuses if any] and then roll for damage with said weapon....if its less than 14, that creatures armour "saved it"
Spell attacking is a whole different thing we were doing it,
DM has a creature casts a spell on us, that requires a WIS/CON of 13, we roll a D20 and add whatever our "Saving Throws" are....if higher than 13 we stop that spell "hitting/ hurting / effecting us"
We didnt understand the Spell "Modifier and Save DC" with reghard to Spells lol
Haha, that first one would be brutal. Some weapons would never deal damage.
We started off with the books and then got the DnD beyond app as we realised it was far easier to use lol
The last one is correct though.
If a creature casts a spell on you (if the spell requires a save anyway), you use your saving throws. If you cast a spell on another creature, the DC that creature has to beat depends on your spell save DC.
I had a couple questions about creating my character. Should I ask here or under the character discussion channel?
That depends a bit. Let's start here with your questions and then move over there if needed.
Oh ok.....sso........Colourspray requires CON13 saving throw, if i cast that at a DM creature they need to roll a D20 for its CON and add its saving throw for CON [whatever it is?]
For a spell like Silence that has no CON/WIS etc saving throw" i use my SPELL SAVE DC vs the DM creature, if mine is greater, that Creature becomes silenced???
Where does the Spell Attack and Modifier come in?
If a spell has no saving throw or attack roll mentioned, it simply takes effect.
Alright thanks. So I'm under the abilities section and I'm making an orc fighter. The orc modifier is already added to the stats but I'm pretty sure the fighter modifies isn't. Would it go under other modifiers?
The spell attack modifier comes in when you cast a spell that involves an attack roll, such as Fire Bolt.
When it says Make a ranged spell attack against the target. it means roll a d20 and add your spell attack modifier.
Should I wait until your done helping the other person? I don't want to interrupt
If you are starting at levels 1-3, class doesn't give you any ability bonuses.
No worries, we can just do reply chains.
Ohh I see. Thanks so much
ok wait so i was tryna create a character in the dnd beyond thing, but there's a lot of options that (from what i read from the resources before) seem like i need to know about the campaign before i make the character (for example, milestone or xp for levelling). so should i join one and then make a character? is that how it usually goes
hope that makes sense
Yes, there are going to be options that will be based on your campaign, and if you aren't part of a campaign, you won't know which option to pick
Joining a campaign first and then making a character to fit that campaign is generally gonna have less friction
alright, thanks
hello my fellow noobs
Hello Mike
hiya mike
Welcome to purgatory
dont listen to this guy welcome to hell i mean the exciting world of dnd
They all the same thing
Yay we get to suffer in this magical world of dice and trapped chests together! JK hopefully we'll all have fun here
Guys
oh hello fellow noob dm
I was going to ask if you’d like a player/DM as well
Dm is fun but hard sometimes
I’m not so experienced with 2024 but I have been playing D&D for a long time, I’m happy to help
I do to
*we
Are you referring to the PHB?
I bend rules when I play to make it more easy and fun
We bought the starter set with our money
are you making the campaign or oneshot, are you using a premade one, or are you a player?
I hate to break this to you but.. you’re using an outdated version
nah its okay a lot of people still play on 5e 2014
Does it realy matter
If you want to play D&D long term I would say yes
No, it doesn't really matter
I play dnd long term and I don't realy care what year book I'm using

You can segue from the 2014 rules to the 2024 rules easily enough
Getting used to rules in the midst of getting obsoleted seems a bit fruitless icl
yeah
The 2014 rules are not obsolete, they're just not the latest
You can still play D&D purely using the 2014 rules and the starter sets make a great on-ramp for newcomers
and people still play older editions sometimes
Realistically they’re headed in the obsoleted direction
Some people make there own rules
Yo are we ever gonna learn how to play
That's a bit beyond the scope of this channel
When all the new material is for a completely different system it’s obsolete imo
thats called #homebrew
You will
It's not a completely different system and saying it is isn't going to help newcomers
But are you a player or dm
it isnt named 6th edition for a reason
I don’t know what that means
Learning to play is something you have to motivate yourself to do. Have you checked out #learn-to-play?
Are you going to be a player or the dungeon master
You’re not gonna easily find 2014 player groups at local groups 2 years from now, that’s all I’m saying

Idk
Is it possible to play with 2 ppl
Yeah very
The game has two roles; the Dungeon Master (or DM) runs the world, coordinates adventures, runs monsters etc
The players explore the world
yes, but one needs to be the dungeon master
I think so yes
my first session was just me and my dm
Yes but the game isn't designed for that
2 person play, often called "duet", requires some modifications to the game to make things work
The game is designed for a DM and 3-5 players
Honestly 2 player sessions can be great cuz then the person playing isn’t tethered to what anyone else wants to do
We don’t have a 3rd person
yeah the game is designed id say to groups of 3-7
You can try looking for more players using the game-finding channels
Check out #find-a-game
Well my opinion it best with a dm and 2 or 3 players
Don’t u have to play the game irl
Nope, you can play online too
Don't have to
you dont! people can play online
How
Discord
Discord is a very popular way of playing the game
through imagination
or virtual tabletops
It a game of imagination
So D&D is a game where people describe what their characters do and the DM describes how the world responds to those actions
Ultimately it boils down to just being able to talk to each other
ever played one of those interactive text based adventure games?
So as long as you can talk to each other, be it by voice or in person, you can play D&D
I got the “Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle”
Now, you can add extras to that, such as a virtual representation of a table for digital maps and minis, and sharing dice rolls, but that's not needed
Oh reactions aren’t allowed here damn
yeah gifs too
I got the “Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle”
That's a good starting point
Nah, it's fine if you want to learn the game
2024 isnt that different from 2014 as ive heard
Once you're comfortable with the basic concepts of D&D and how to play, then you can look into the latest version of the rules
I learnt from just being thrown into a game as a player
idk i havent actually got the rules for 2024 yet
The 2014 rules (which that set uses) and the 2024 rules are inter-compatible, so you can transition over pretty easily
A new Starter Set is coming out in a few months which will be the new “official introduction” even though it’s not out yet
Still a way away unfortunately
The 2014 one is the most currently up to date version
i mean its fine to start with 2014, as davyd said theyre intercompatible
Who is the dm if you don't mind me asking
Good luck
good luck!
It’s Skylar
ah, okay
Have fun then
its easier to play as the player rather than the dm in my opinion
By far, the DM’s the one doing the heavy lifting
I love making campaigns but sometimes it just hard
Oh so should I be Dm?
no no no
play as a player if you want
i consider playing as a player first and as a dm second
Just make sure the dm knows what they are doing
There are DM’s who know what they’re doing? (kidding)
no one knows what theyre doing in this world
I would say as a new DM, don't sweat the little things too much
Focus on just getting a feel for it, make mistakes, learn from them, rinse and repeat
But even without joking, it's fine to figure things out during play. You'll often not know how a particular rule works. In that case, make something up that sounds reasonable (when in doubt, rule in favor of the player characters), and look it up after the session.
Number one rule of all dnd is don't piss of the dm or they are sending you character to a death sentence
That's a bit if a meme and not a very good one.
No, that's not the "number one rule" and it's not really helpful to say to newcomers
dont piss off the dm either way its not nice to them
Darm no one here has humour
People who are new here will not know that you are joking.
You can have a sense of humour and still point out when a joke isn't appropriate
Well I thought it was funny
In fact, I'd say the key part of having a sense of humour is knowing when it's appropriate to tell a joke
And that is all that matters
number one rule of dnd is dont stress too much
Mine is have fun (but not at other people expense)
yeah that also fits
I'd say if there is a "number one rule" of D&D it's that D&D is a game of communication and respect. As long as you communicate with each other to the best of your ability about what you want from the game and what you want to do in the game, and respect each other and each others time, you'll probably have good D&D
Is it? You could be actively harmful to someone elses introduction to the hobby. It does not hurt to be a bit more mindful with how you communicate.
Skylar just summoned God to kill me
why
What do I do
Concentrate on your game
My mind works differently to people I'm not some person who cares if someone finds it hurtful
im guessing you didnt make a level 20 pc and have a level 1-5 pc
That's not a very good attitude to have in a community.
Thank you
Where, you know, it matters how you come across.
which means
you have no chance of killing the god probably
unless the god is very weak
So dnd anyone need help with the basics?
This discussion is getting a bit off topic. Let's return to helping newcomers.
On a server with rules for use and community engagement we have to be more mindful with how we communicate with others.
Any further inquiries about our policies and rules should be taken to #moderator-support
maybe skylar is a new dm themself and maybe they think the goal is to kill the players
which it isnt
No one can give a satisfactory answer except for your DM. It can stem from an adversarial DM mindset, but it could also potentially be them trying to set up a plot point.
If it’s making you uncomfortable or you’re unsure of the reasoning behind it, it’s always good to communicate.
Goal of game is to have fun
So i have a new roommate and him and his buddies all play D&D and I am trying to figure it out. The problem im having is character creation seems so hard anybody that can message me and give me any guidance would be well appreciated
@sand prism
Here ya go, Lil Buddy!
This folks is my friend, he's coming from Baulders Gate, but he's very interested in playing actual D&D
hello baldurs gater!
-Bg3 is fun
-make new save file
-do intro
-play game(to act 3 at most)
-have idea
-make new save file
-Repeat
what is the command for the bg3 to dnd guide?
Idk lol
anyways bg3 has a pretty similar ruleset to dnd
I've been in this server for a while and don't know the commands myself 😭
I know it ain’t nowhere close tot he same cause lots of actions get swapped to bonus actions lol
Also a lot of things only using one die such and such
No idea, but here's a link to the last time it was mentioned:
#dnd-newcomers message
I’ve just been wanting to get in dnd cause man 😭
i actually played bg3 after i played my first sessions of dnd
and i gotta say, it plays similarly (though im still a noob in both games)
Same lol
The best build I’ve made in bg3 I stole off line
It was the one that mimics “let me solo her” from dark souls
anyways, the major differences that ive seen from dnd and bg3
bg3 lets you drink health potions as a bonus action, while in dnd it takes up a whole action instead, although that is a popular house rule
bg3 lets non casters use magic scrolls
also dnd has a lot more races than bg3, so more variety
Doesn’t opening doors require an action too in some editions?
Yea that and subclasses
- more spells
i dont know any encounter where you would be opening doors at least in my limited dnd experience
So I've figured out how to make a character. And I have a basic understanding of how to play and how the rules work. Any suggestions on what I should do before I find a campaign to play?
first of all, i think it is better to start with a oneshot
a short and sweet adventure that takes up only one session
It would be funny to open a door, cast spell, close door lol
That's a good idea. Thanks!
What I’ll mostly probably look for is more goofy campaigns or ones that are more lenient cause I can guarantee I won’t be min maxing lol
I’m too stupid to do that even if I wanted too
goofy campaigns are definitely a good choice
however even in serious campaigns i wouldnt min max because in my opinion, that detracts from the fun
Yeah I hear the fun of dnd primarily is making mistakes lol
I’m ofc it varies since some like narrative others want to be silly but personally idc which one I get lol
the fun of dnd is in many aspects, the improv, the narrative, the combat
I really do like the idea of a short story to be a part of. It means I get to see a lot more of other people's fun ideas
hii
hello
Hiii*
Hello!
I found a group here to play with, and I'm so excited! Can't wait!
Hi, new here. been dipping my toe in DND for a while on tiktok, but have not played at all yet. DND and beyond sent me here!

Opening a door is a free action, keep in mind if you can do it so can a bugbear
do y'all ever get this completely unscratchable little itch that never goes away after taking some combat-specific feats like spell sniper & elemental adept? ie, only casting attack-roll based spells, never taking anything that doesn't benefit from ea's bonus damage and so on?
or either keep trying to tank hits when it's completely unnecessary whenever you get yourself Tough?
i'm curious if it's the same for everyone else here as well
it's a problem xD
no i never got the itch to do that
when i get tough i get it so my pc wont be squished easily, not to try and tank hits
scared dog emote
Once the pcs started closing doors with their object interaction, to get cover, so did the enemies.
Dungeon fights became quite amusing. Everyone was opening and slamming doors.
minecraft villager behavior
What is a melee enemy to do against repelling elderich blast (they’re effected by ray of frost and difficult terrain)
There can be quite a few options! Jumping is a big one, others might simply target someone else or use their action to Dash back to melee. Certain enemies might just be able to push past whatever movement penalties if their speed is high enough or if they have abilities that let them ignore forced movement
Throw something? Just because they prefer melee doesn't mean they can't do ranged. It just may not be as good. You can also use an action to dash which could put you back up with a caster depending how far apart you were to begin with.
But it's partly why I try to have a bow or javelins or hand axes. Something a primarily melee character can do when something isn't in range.
Not every enemy will be on the ground and accessible so either you give those characters some range weapon options/skills or you sit and stew a lot whenever something flies or is far away
Better than 0.
We made a mistake in bg3 and had to 1-4 damage down grymforge who had 450 hp. But you whittle away at it until someone else can get in there.
i mean yeah 1 damage is better than nothing, the rock couldve missed
My wife and I are going to do our first one-shot with a friend of ours next month. Let me know if there are any tips we should keep in mind for our first time. My wife will be very green and I’m still pretty new as well.
Tips as a player or as a DM?
Anyone currently playing? I would like to spectate
Most people would be uncomfortable with strangers watching/listening in to their games. I recommend you check out actual plays on Youtube or Twitch.
after creating the character background story*, you can dissect it and fill out the.. Features and traits, Proficient skills, Other proficiency and language and maybe one equipment, right
pls ping reply, i might forgot about this ina few minutes
On the 5e character your sheet all those things except for backstory will be determined by your species, class, and background
so, all of that is fixed by the rulebook, am I interpreting it correctly?
Yes
whats 5e btw-
The current edition of D&D
Background is the game mechanic that gives you skills, feats, tools/equipment, and possibly languages.
Backstory is what you describe what your character did before starting their adventuring career.
5e = 5th edition
i see
D&D has been around for 50 years so there has been many editions.
does backstory actually affect anything in the character sheet?
No, your backstory is just flavour.
Past what you type in the backstory section, no.
It's there to serve the narrative function of explaining:
- Who your character is
- Where they came from
- Why they're adventuring
Nope: it’s mostly for flavor.
Depending on the level you may need to add what they did.
A good back story contains:
how where they raise, where are they from?
Why they left home?
Call to adventure:(incorporating a hook)
If you wanna add things for personal story beats let the gm know
Essentially what they were doing before the adventure starts
Player!
Have fun
Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Don’t get mad at the dice
what about "Other Proficiencies"? is that also in the rulebook? i swear to god my eyes are way too easy to miss on crucial info, even if its already obvious
Learn the fundamentals of the game. You don't need to memorize all of the rules because you can look them up in the rulesbook later but it helps the DM who won't need to pause the game to teach you.
Have fun but not at other players' expense — remember you are not the main character but sharing the spotlight with all of the other players.
Also given by your class, species, and background. That section is usually for non-skill proficiencies such as:
- Weapons & Armor
- Languages
- Tools
- Vehicles
- Game Sets
- Instruments
Yup
cant believe all of that is in the rulebook...
or that it's going to be added in mid game
I think you said you were using the 2014 ruleset right? Since you're running the 2019 Starter Kit?
Using Fighter as an example, if you scroll down a bit you'll see it lays out all of your level 1 proficiencies that Fighter specifically gives you:

Did you read through the free Basic Rules chapter by chapter?

havent finish yet, and the past few days has been unnecessarily busy for me
thats rough, hope you finish soon
I was looking through the looking for community posts and a few of them were asking for 18+. Is that because of the content or is it only the age requirement?
Some adults may not feel comfortable playing with minors.
Oh that makes sense. Thanks for explaining it
You don't want to say something out of turn OR have something be a big too adult themed and suddenly mortify somebody's parent. It's never happened to me... but it's what everyone is dreading.
Yeah I understand why
I only play with adults so there are things we say that may not be appropriate for minors, especially ones we don't know/related to.
I didn't mean to be captain obvious, I just dread that.
It's completely understandable. You never know what someone's parents are okay with

Just a quick question. Can characters progress in level from one shot to one shot?
I’m actually about to play my very first game and I am the dm
Usually DMs don't allow characters played from other DM's campaigns.
DMs can string together one-shots into an ongoing campaign though.
i originally had an interconnected oneshot plan
i turned it into a campaign
That's the model a lot of Adventurer's League groups take.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

and now im dming a campaign
even though i dont have a grasp on many of the rules, i still try
I think that’s what I’m going to try to do as my players are dead set on only using the character that I helped them create a while back.
I think I’m going to do it (or at least attempt to) so that the first one shot takes place in a village, the second will be the travel from the first area to the next, the third will be the adventure that unfolds at the next location. Basically make it a long running homebrew of one shots.
If you've got the budget, you could make it an actual home AL group. That would give your players the option to take the characters to other events for unique experiences.
I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of stuff WotC gave away during the early lockdown days of the pandemic that's still free or PWYW, and I think there are other adventures that are at least sometimes PWYW and still AL-legal.

Hey, new to this whole DnD thing and wondering if there is any good campaign i could watch to learn some stuff? Also, is BG3 good for learning dnd? kinda wanna get the game
There are plenty of actual plays on Youtube and Twitch. Critical Role and Dimenstion 20 are two of the most popular ones.
Baldur's Gate 3 is loosely based on the 5th Edition ruleset. It's a stepping stone but they changed a bunch of rules so it would be playable as a video game.
I think it's a nice and fun experience! I loved to create my character and play the campaign. And it gets you accustomed to the action, bonus action and movement thing.
yeah
its 5e but molded to fit a video game
I’ll look into that. For now I think it’s just gonna be a monthly hobby for us. My wife and I decided to get into it about a year ago but we didn’t get anywhere because neither of us are creative enough to be DM. We have one friend in our group that is amazing at coming up with stuff on the fly but he refuses to do the reading required for DMing. I recently realized that AI like Copilot or ChatGPT are amazing creative aides. As I stated earlier, this will be my first game ever, completely. Never DMed or played. Only done some research and watched a handful of games on YouTube. If this one shot is a success and we continue, I may look into AL.
Thanks for the help y’all
The starter set and the essentials kit are both inexpensive purchases, if you like. MSRP under $25 each. Each of the boxes has:
- A set of pregenerated characters, with built-in instructions for what to do with the first few levels up. (They're slightly outdated because of the polish the rules got in September, but this community could help you work though them.)
- A slimmed-down "how to play" version of the 2014 rules set.
- A poster map that shows the outdoor area around the town of Phandalin; nominally in the Forgotten Realms.
- A full set of dice
- An adventure, including instructions for the DM on how to run things.
the current starter set contain Dragons of Stormwreck Isle; the Essentials Kit contains Dragon of Icespire Peak. I think the GM advice in Stormwreck is better structures; it will take a party from level 1 to level 4 over the course of 3-4 sessions. the Essentials Kit will take them to level 5 over 6-7 sessions. The Essentials Kit at least used to include codes at D&D Beyond for 3 additional adventures you could add to your account that would ultimately go to level 13. I know the adventures are still there, but I don't know if the freebie codes are still included.
We actually own the Stormwreck Starter Kit but I feel like purchasable adventures will be difficult for us as it’s going to have to held over discord. 3 of us are in KY and the other one is in PA. They all wanna be on video chat while I don’t wanna have to fiddle with a camera set up.
Theater of the Mind is a totally viable route. But I'm also pretty sure that either of those adventures are purchasable on Roll20. (say, 70% sure?)
How do i find a group to start playing, i didn't understood much of what they said to me at the start?

Guys me and my friend Skylar are still a lil confused
About what?
Alright guys. I'm back. I'm gonna need to dm this Saturday. How does health work? When you level up you gain another hit die and that roll from whatever dice is added to your max hp? How does healing from rests work? How much do you heal? Is it a roll? What about a long rest?
It's all covered in the Free Rules.
Leveling up: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
Adjust Hit Points and Hit Point Dice. Each time you gain a level, you gain an additional Hit Die. Roll that die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total (minimum of 1) to your Hit Point maximum. Instead of rolling, you can use the fixed value shown in the Fixed Hit Points by Class table.
Long rest: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#LongRest
Regain All HP. You regain all lost Hit Points and all spent Hit Point Dice. If your Hit Point maximum was reduced, it returns to normal.
Short rest: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#ShortRest
Spend Hit Point Dice. You can spend one or more of your Hit Point Dice to regain Hit Points. For each Hit Point Die you spend in this way, roll the die and add your Constitution modifier to it. You regain Hit Points equal to the total (minimum of 1 Hit Point). You can decide to spend an additional Hit Point Die after each roll.
Hullo, I'm new here. I'm kinda familiar with dnd, I did a one shot kind of with a friend, but that was extremely home brew and not too strict since we were new
Is there anyone starting a campaign that is willing to dm for new players?
If you're looking for a game check #find-a-game

Anyone have any recommendations on how to find an online playgroup? Ive never played and im looking to learn always been interested

Im a bit of a boomer this isnt helping much
Hit point dice really confuse me. Just for example I'm pretty confident they don't get rerolled? If there's something else that can dumb that down for me that would be great.
I also find the short rest confusing, I see you can spend one or more of your hitpoint dice to regain hitpoints. I just don't understand that either.
Hit Dice determines your hit points.
At level 1, you have maximum hit points. So a level 1 fighter has 10 hp + Con modifier, while a level 1 rogue has 8 hp + Con modifier.
Whenever your character gains a new level you either roll hp based on your Hit Dice (d6 for sorcerer/wizard, d8 for bard/cleric/druid/monk/rogue/warlock, d10 for fighter/paladin/ranger, and d12 for barbarian) + your Con modifier.
A short rest is an hour, which you can spend 1 or more Hit Dice (the number of HD depends on your level) to regain hp back. A level 1 fighter has 1 HD, so during a short rest they can roll a d10 + Con modifier of hp back.
Spent HD is regain after a long rest.
So you get both hp AND hit dice?
No...
Well.. isn't that something..
You expend a HD to regain hp on a short rest.
A level 10 PC has 10 HD to use, while a level 1 PC has only 1 HD to use.
You regain all of your total HD after a long rest.
Alright. I looked at something. I think I understand it better than before. I still have a question, what determines your maximum hl when you level up?
You roll your HD... I posted it above.
So when a level 1 PC becomes level 2 they roll 1 HD.
A new level 2 fighter would roll a d10 + Con modifier.
Do you add your HD to your maximum?
I'm aware that different classes roll different hitdie..
Please reread what I wrote.
At level 1 a fighter has (1d10 HD), with at least 10 hp + their Con modifier.
When that fighter becomes level 2, they now have 2HD and rolls a d10 + their Con modifier. (Instead of rolling you can take the averge of a d10, which is 6 hp).
Please watch this Handbook Helper video on leveling up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8N0nyfZE3E
I think, or at least hope I understand now. I appreciate you helping me despite how lost I've been in this. Thank you.
hello!
does anyone know any server that hosts games ?
i really want to get into tbe game and also learn to be dungeon master to play with my friends irl
Check #find-a-game
The other option is called taking average: (your full hit die amount +con)
heyyo, my first campaigns a big one, but its working well, just wondering if there are any sources that have any info on what happens after level 20? I dont want to make it completely homebrew because i kinda suck. :/
In what way? Level progression, narrative, challenges?
Maybe it's worth pointing out that DnD doesn't assume that a character ends a campaign at level 20. In fact, that is rather unsual.
Uhhh send them to chult to fight a terrask!
features/traits
Ah. Beyond level 20, the party can earn bonus feats.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Tier4Levels1720
With this approach, each character gains one feat of their choice for every 30,000 XP the character earns above 355,000 XP. Epic Boon feats are especially appropriate for these bonus feats, but a player can choose any feat for which their level 20 character qualifies.
thanks!

Hello everyone 🐍 🍃
I’ve always been interested in DnD but was pretty shy to fall into, since it’s not something really known where I’m from. But I really wanna try, learn and have fun playing with people ^^
So thanks already and I’m hoping to discover many things thanks to all of you 🍃
Hey, welcome!

https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/140688093/3Jt4fd hello im new so i dont know if the character i made is good
It looks like you haven’t added your ability scores from your background, and you’ll also want to equip your items. It also looks like you may have added those items twice so you’ll need to remove the duplicates.
It's almost perfect! A few things I noticed:
- You haven't chosen your background ASIs
- You seem to have added the starting equipment at least twice
- You haven't equipped any of your gear
- As a personal preference, I would rearrange your stats. Mainly just swap your Strength and Wisdom or Intelligence and Wisdom scores.
thank you i didnt realise that
Wait I can ask for help with fixing my character?
#character-discussion might be the best place to ask
Alr
yeah the lfg channels should do
(unrelated: splatoon pfp)
Hello there, I've always wanted to learn how to play DnD but never had the time nor attention span to sit down and actually learn but I've decided "YOLO" and went in regardless
i only know the basics of it but no one really bothered making me fully understand to play it. Like i know a lot i struggle with battles
I was looking at the channel to find players/games, is there like a way to begin a new adventure ? Because I’m still a newbie so I would love to see the behind the scenes and create stuffs together, or I don’t know how it works, but I would be really happy to experience game. I pick things pretty fast and I’m quick learner ^^
But no worries I’m chill so if not now I’ll just read and learn stuffs ^^
Games take time to organize, so after a group has assembled, it's a matter of deciding on a day/time that works for everyone and gives the DM time to prepare.
So I should be looking for a group or a community, about to or willing to, begin a game ?
Right I’ll keep my eyes out ^^
Thanks
The ads may be for games already in progress, but I'd expect that most of them are for games that haven't begun yet. So reply to ads that catch your interest and/or post an ad yourself!
Ok got it ^^ thanks again 🍃
i have a hard time finding one in my time zon 😦
I get it. I found one, but it's pretty late for me so... Guess who's gonna trade sleep for DnD? XD
im in Cet or Cest time
Don't give up! Continue seeing the games available, and maybe there'll be one that you'll be able to play.
One recommendation is to focus not on shared time zone but on shared availability. If someone is playing in their AM but your PM, then that should work!
I'm struggling to find a campaign in GMT+2 😭😭
Don’t try to worry so much about time zones. If you’re playing with people online, the only thing that matters is availability. If it’s 8pm for you, and another person is in another time zone and it’s 3pm for them, that doesn’t really matter, so long as you’re both free and want to play D&D together
It's a struggle
If I may ask, how do I make/set an Adventurers League ID?
Maybe check with the folks in #adventurers-league?
Ok, thank you!
welcome newcomers!
someone at my table was spamming guidance on every roll, is that allowed?
It takes an action to cast, so out of combat pretty much
But it’s not subtle, so your NPCs will be able to watch them cast it every time
Out of combat and if they're in range to deliver a touch spell, yes
guys how do i make a good paladin using dnd beyond? im playing with some of my friends but they seem to be much stronger than me at lvl 4
#character-discussion or #optimization would be where to talk about characters!
There's channels to better discuss it but the short is focus strength, then charisma then constitution. Don't be afraid to smite on your attacks and be front lining
It means the player is leveraging their abilities to help other players.
ok thanks😎
I try to limit using Guidance to something the character can see happening. "Oh, you're gonna investigate this weird liquid? Guidance. Trying to check if we're being followed? Guidance." Otherwise it feels spammy and like I'm inserting my character into every interaction, which is generally no good.
bruh all these people dont want people that dont have any experience
how the heck am i supposed to learn
aughhhhhh
You could pay for a session, sign up for learn-to-play sessions (see the server's Events tab), head to a local library/game store/school club, and/or con friends and family members into playing.
im broke
nothing within 30 minutes of me
Have you looked for online games?
where would i look?
i have applield through many from this discord

Keep looking because spots get filled up quickly. Also, check other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels (most D&D Youtubers have their own Discord servers). Check your local Facebook D&D groups.

dnd beyond
I just went throught and clicked make a charecter I probaly should’ve read more that’s mb
yeah he just keeps saying i cast guidance right before anyone on the team makes a roll, even if he’s like way out of range, he tells them to wait to roll so his pc can walk over lol
What? This channel is to help new players out not tales from your table.
There’s an article here that goes over the basics.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1059-how-to-create-your-first-dungeons-dragons
This probably gonna sound stupid but how do you lvl up irl and do I need to get a new character sheet
You update your sheet (use a pencil, don't use a pen).
Your DM will likely tell you when you've reached the threshold for a level up.
I’m supposed but I don’t remember how don’t you roll for hp
That depends if your DM allows rolling or not.
DMs will either ask you to roll or use the average for the HD.
Ok
The rules for updating your max HP on level up can be found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
Let's work on a little bit more for specifics: Which rule set (2014 or 2024), what level/class are you now, what level are you going to?
24 fighter to lvl 4
OK. So, as a Fighter, you'll gain 1 Hit Die that is a d10. Assuming you take the average value for it, that'll be (1 + 10) / 2 = 5.5, rounded up to 6 more HP added to your max.
You also get your choice of a Feat that you otherwise qualify for.
Is it normal for a level 10 character 8 in rouge and 2 in warlock to have +13 to stealth and sleight of hand?
Damn that's like, a pretty big buff
Odds are good they started with a 16 Dex at level 1. They're probably at 18 Dex after 2 Feats/ASIs, but could be as high as 20. Proficiency Bonus at level 10 is +4. Expertise gives you double your proficiency Bonus for the chosen skills. +4 from DEX, +4 from PB, +4 from Expertise is +12.

If an opponent has the blinded and frightened status, would the blinded cancel out the frightened status?
Im new chill
pardon me.
but just saying tha should doubly worse. like i'd check to see if the subject in question surrenders
Being within line of sight doesn't necessarily requiring seeing.
So no, they wouldn't cancel out.
Reason im asking is cause it states for frightened that they have to be in "line of sight" so if they couldnt see thats why i asked
Would make a great scenario for a Chthulhu-esque campaign. Would also work great in Ravenloft. Having both effects active that is.
In a naruto 5e campaign atm, had this pop up and the guy who had those statuses just said he wasnt frightened because he couldnt see him
I believe so, yes. "Within line of sight" has no specified meaning in the rules, so we can take the english meaning, which would be "a thing you can see". If you can't see it, you're not affected by the first bullet of frigthened, but still suffer from the second one.
The second one is just they can still approach the thing theyre frightened by bc they cant see it technically right?
To me, being blinded would intensify the being frightened.
No, only the first one is actually affected by seeing:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#FrightenedCondition
The "can't approach willingly" clause is universal as long as the condition lasts.
Ok so they still couldnt approach it then
this wouldn't be the players decision but a Gm ruling ... and the rules seem to suggest blind does not negate fear
The rules definitely suggest the opposite, but you're right in that the DM has the final say.
So in the scenario if they are frightened and blinded, since they cannot see but if they try to attempt to go to the source of what feared him they wouldnt be able to. Does that sound right?
Like last known location before they were blinded
Not last location. The condition is quite clear that they cannot approach the source of fear.
i would say they can still hear said threat and can't go near it
So if theyre blinded and frightened they just willingly go towards it no matter what?
No, quite the opposite. They cannot approach.
you really want this blind negates fear thing to work. but no.
No im not trying to get anything to work, i just want clarification
So like what does happen to him then in that scenario
Alright, so here's an overview:
While you have the Frightened condition, you experience the following effects.
**Ability Checks and Attacks Affected. **You have Disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls while the source of fear is within line of sight.
Can’t Approach. You can’t willingly move closer to the source of fear.
The first part is the one affected by line of sight and the one I argue gets negated by the blinded condition. The second one is not affected by line of sight and is thus always in effect.
Ok cool
i think that's the right answer, but ultimately i'd leave it up to the GM IF anything else is going to happen than the above stated
guys i am new. i never played dnd and i want to try it how do i do that
So then in you're ppinion between the status effects of blinded, frightened, and poisoned, which 2 would be the best combo together

Welcome! Check out the above links to get started.
@hearty escarp which would be the best 2 to put together between the 3 i mentioned above those links
Poisoned is broadly bad (for the one that gets afflicted), so it alone is quite effective. If frightened or blinded is on top of that, slightly better.
But this is an #optimization topic.
So if theyre blinded and poisoned, they have to roll 3 times to attack and have to pick the worst out of all of tjem?
No, advantage/disadvantage doesn't stack. So it'll still be roll 2d20 and pick the lower one.
i made a character https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/140710286
This a good first character sheet? https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/140700689

hey im looking at getting "back" into dnd i played a few times a long while ago but i have been really wanting ti get back into it after watching some funny dnd tik toks
welcome back @brittle crater !
hey , can i get some advice on where to start
#looking-for-dm is definitely not to be overlooked. That's where you're going to find a game.
i mean i dont have loads of free time thats the thing i saw something about a server where you can play on your own and then do quests online to?
You're probably thinking of a westmarches server.
that's a player community with more than one GM and a collective of players, and all the GMs say when they run sessions or even do pick up games.
annoyingly i wanna go and nfind the server i was in before cause that was really fun but idk the name only the logo haha
what was the logo?
yeah. I was going to use an app to identify it, but that's too generic.
i found them on roll 20
what are they called so I can know them?
thats the issue.....
if i saw the icon and name iv would know but as of now idk ]
oh... I thought you FOUND them on roll 20. You're saying that's where you found them before.
sorry.
yeah thats where i found them before

Are you referring to the narrative description of dwarves provides in the rules or the mechanical features they get?
Making my first character, on d&d beyond. First off, am I using the right site? And secondly, what rules and such should I set during creation?
D&D beyond is fine to use as it's pretty self contained and you can purchase digital books to unlock more content later if you want to expand to other options.
As a new player I would turn off in the character preferences "Homebrew" "Legacy" "partnered content" and then set the sheet to "public" so that you can share a viewable link to it if you want to
Thank you very much
Sadly it will depend, some will say use 2014/legacy some will say 2024
on the character creation page when i choose what two languages i want to learn do i need to roll a d12 twice?
No - you can pick them. Or work with your DM and group to pick the ones that would make the most sense for your game/campaign.
The dice rolling for them is only if you want the selection to be random for whatever reason
thank you

hi im new
New to dnd here
I have no clue what I'm doing
#learn-to-play is wher eyou can start
D&d kidna needs a Dm to play as solo plat is not a thing the game is designed for
I found a local Magic the Gathering card shop that hosts dnd on Thursdays. Maybe you have the same near you?
I have found that libraries, college campuses and game shops often have something gaming if you look around or ask. Once you meet one person they will often lead you to more. Game shops especially tend to have many different types of games including "Adventures League". There is a group of channels for that here. This type is created to be a simple way to show up and play one or two games without alot of work finding a group or as one gets started. Also I found as a newish person that this Discord has things called looking for a game and looking for community. The last had some links to Discords created by groups who then were hosting their own games, some online. Just me, but I would always keep game play to public places to begin.
For any newcomers check out the community section. It can get difficult trying to find a game and the communities are probably the easiest way to find a group

Also maybe check out the Introductory videos
Take your time, don't feel like you have to read or know everything.
Focus on learning how a character sheet works and core mechanics like D20 tests (roll a d20, add any modifiers and bonuses, meet or beat the Difficulty Challenge or Armor Class to succeed).
Feel free to ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide)
Yeah…suppose I’ll have to keep on finding one then, thanks for responding
Alright thanks, I’ll try finding one here then
Would anyone be able to tell me if I need to download anything prior to joining a group? I see mention of a dice throwing app or software, but I am not 100% sure if I need to download anything.
It'll depend on the group. If you're playing online, it's likely that whatever vtt (virtual tabletop) you use has a dice roller built in. if you are playing in person, someone can lend you dice if you don't have any.
(also, for dice rolls specifically you'd never need to download anything, a simple website can do that, like https://slyflourish.com/dice/
Okay, thank you very much.
Would you recommend any vtt's I should use or is it like 1 type that everyone uses?
There are many!
Owlbear Rodeo is in my opinion the easiest to get into and overall best to get started.
Roll20 and FoundryVTT are also popular ones, but they have quite a bit of complexity.
You’d use whatever your DM / table uses. I would perhaps hold off on dedicating yourself to any particular VTT unless you want to primarily look for games using a specific platform
Gotcha, thank you.
I will have a look into these a little just to get a bit of knowledge out of them, thank you for the help.
hiiiiilooo
Thank youu, I'll be reading now.., i know some of the basics alr but I'll see what else i missed here
I've made a character now basically so.. what do i do now?

Chat I'm starting at lvl 3 wizard how many 1st level and 2nd level spells do I know?
it's easiest to walk through this one level at a time. As a first-level character, you get 6 level 1 spells. when you get to second level, you add 2 more that have to be level 1 spells (8 total). When you reach third level, you get to add 2 more spells - these can be level 1 spells, level 2, spells, or one of each.
From here, you start to get some differences in how the subclasses work between 5.14 and 5.24.

Hi beautiful people! I'm looking for a group for casual play to try out online Dnd. I've had experience with one offline session but sadly friends moved away so we can't gather our party anymore. Anyone interested?

I've learned about the basics but still need guidance. And please forgive me as I'm a bit socially anxious... Sorry in advance for that lol.
Read through #find-a-game for instructions on using the server's channels to find others to game with!
You don't need to be an expert or anything 🙂 people are happy to help you with questions about the game
That's great, real nervous about starting
Don't be. Enough people love helping people learn the game that you should be able to find support.
sorry im trying to make a character but everything is just so overwhelming...
do i have to fill in all the blank spaces in the pdf?
Which blank spaces? You will need to fill out all the parts for your character like stats, modifiers, armour, etc...
whats a sub class?
You have a base class, like Cleric or Fighter. Withing that are specializations called subclasses.
For example, a Cleric could be a Nature Cleric or a Light Cleric
so like a domain?
It adds additional features and abilities to your character
A domain would be specific to Clerics and is part of their subclass
Thanks for the encouraging words 💯
OK! thank you!
Filling out a character sheet by hand is really daunting, but I applaud you for undertaking it. People have made guides for it, so perhaps this is helpful:
https://www.thegamer.com/dungeons-dragons-dnd-2024-players-handbook-character-sheet-guide/
And here are the actual rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
thank you for the word of encouragement and the links!
so i want to ask something, if my background is a cleric seeking to unite the world under one divine purpose but will gladly do it through subtle manipulation then what is the alignment?
neutral good?
As long as the 'divine' is good, probably neutral or chaotic good yeah
alignment is pretty flexible though, you could adjust it during play if it feels like how your character acts no longer describes the alignment you have written down
ahh noted! thank you so much for the clarification
so sorry to bother again, but i need assistance with adding the skills and proficiencies...
Your various skills are found under their corresponding ability score and modifiers on the character sheet. Any skill proficiencies you received as part of your class, species, and background care package will be calculated and the circle next to it gets bubbled in.
If you have a +2 to Charisma and you are proficient in Performance, you will add your proficiency bonus and your Charisma modifier to all of your Performance checks.
For all the other skills that you are not proficient in, you will simply fill it in with what ability score modifier you have. So if you have a +2 to Charisma but you are not proficient in Deception, you will still add +2 to that skill check.
i dont understand this
So when you look at the sheet, you see how each ability (so wisdom, strength, constitution, etc.) has a further list of skills under them?
For dexterity that's acrobatics, sleight of hand and stealth
yes
So at level 1 with a 14 dexterity score and being proficient in stealth, you end up getting.... what bonus on stealth?
Are there any websites/wikis for new players? Everything I need to know for playing
I'll add to Deva's commentary on character sheets by hand - I think it's an excellent way to learn the rules.

I will never not be amused by Jeffs eternal fight with Dyno.
+2 on the 14 and level 1 get a +2 proficiency bonus, so a +4?
I mean, at this point I'm willing to lean into the running gag.
You got it
oh ok! thank you for kindly explaining it!
Why is there so much info in the glossary😭 Sounds fun tho so Ima read through it
Games have rules, and often use words in very structured ways. That's why the Glossary. The "critical to know" stuff would be Chapter 1 in the Free Rules and anything that affects your specific character.
?tag new demo
The bot post above gives an example of how it works in practice.
Reposting from another channel.
Hey. Brand new to the server and to TTRPGS in general. (BG3 got me interested and I decided to take the plunge.) I'm going to a local DnD meetup for a pickup game and I have one major question. I have heard horror stories of the dreaded "That Guy" at a DnD table. The last thing I want to be as a newbie is That Guy. What are the hallmarks of That Guy and how do I avoid being him at all costs?
i have another question with regards to "languages", do they stack?
for example im trying to make a half-elf cleric. a half elf can speak, read, and write Common, Elvish, and one extra language of your choice. But I'm also an acolyte which gave me two languages of my choice. so does this mean i get 5 languages?
Yep!
Read and try to understand the rules of D&D to the best you can. Don't rely on the DM to pause the game to teach you the fundamentals. The DM is busy as it is.
You are not the Main Character. Remember you are playing with other players, so share the spotlight.
D&D is a social game. Don't be a jerk.
Thank the DM after each session. They have a lot of responsibilities both before, during, and after each session.
woah thats a lot of languages!
Player characters are multilingual for sure 😄
Roleplaying and bouncing my character off of other people's characters is the main draw of the game to me. I'm not shooting to be the main character, more of a foil to everyone else.
Like I'll have my own shit going on but the main draw is having fun character stuff with other people.
i love that!
Is the :dndCheers emote a positive reaction to that mentality?
One addition to what OMYAC said: be open to feedback. Listening to what others have to say and learning about the game is half the battle.
Sometimes it's good to have a sit together and talk about everyones expectations for the game and where they think it could be improved.
And similarly, be willing to discuss your preferences, intents, and expectations. The game literally runs on communication, so don't expect your goals to be clear to everyone else without being explicit.
One other "That Guy" avoidance tip: do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, use "that's what my character" would do as an excuse/cover for antisocial-type behavior. (I'm not going to get myself language-bounced on the description I'd prefer to use, even if it's PG-13 language)
I'm here writing down the tips xD
so i made my character sheet, where can i get this checked?
If you used D&D Beyond, then you can set it to public and post a link in #character-discussion . Otherwise, a Dropbox/Google Drive/etc link in #character-discussion works.
I heard a story from a friend where they intentionally made the worst possible characters they could for a murderhobo campaign and role-played as psychopaths. Apparently the campaign lasted half a session before everyone just wanted to be done.
There is a good that’s what my chat would do and a bad.
Good: holding the enemy back and self sacrificing himself for the party to live.
Bad: burning an ale tire village for the lols
ok thank you!
sounds about right
The first is not antisocial-type behavior.
I'm just glad they added this bit to the new PHB:
D&D assumes that player characters aren’t of an evil alignment. Check with your DM before making an evil character.
I could never play an evil character. I'm the kind of person who gets attached to the npcs in games.
Right? Take my characters life if it saves the imaginary puppy.
"Video games make you violent!"
Me: reloads a save because I accidentally said something mean to a minor NPC
Like, in BG3 I tried to play Dark Urge but... Nooo! It killed a poor innocent! I couldn't anymore xD
(Playing dark urge as good is like legitimately the best possible story component in that game tho...)
Redeemed Durge is legit super interesting. If a little gruesome. If I'm forced to kill an innocent like ||that one teifling bard|| then I'm fine with it and why the hell am I talking about this in this channel nevermind.
Please keep in mind that we have #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers for BG3 talk.
Does hunter horde ability work with daggers or darts thrown?
Unfortunately not, as the additional attack has to be with the same weapon. That's hard to do if you've just thrown that weapon away.
I dont think thereis a actually background like that But Vanricten guid has haunted one
Noted.
Thought so thanks

But also welcome! If you're new to D&D we have #learn-to-play and a newcomer message like this (#dnd-newcomers message) with useful resources to help you learn about D&D and how to play.
I know how it works,my main struggle is getting me stats, always the set up is what gets me,but once im set,im good to go
And break things
I love breaking things....
Barbarian is a great choice for breaking things
Or a wizard with FIREBALL
Dragon sorcerer twin spell fire ball
Erm actually twinned spell meta magic option doesn’t work like that and only works for spells targeting other individuals like charm person 🤓
I didn't ask how big the room is,i said I CAST THUNDER WAVE!!
You have options but it depends on gm
I know
I'm lucky the two i am in helped me
