The twist is the dungeon was already raided, and the story starts because they now owe a lot of debt to the ‘ministry of adventures’ (faction I made up)
Is that cool :0
So, it's a cool idea, but I'm going to push back against it, because I've seen this sort of thing go sideways.
As a Dungeon Master, you're sort of a game designer. And there are some basic principles that apply in ttrpgs.
- Don't take things away from players - Grad A bad time
1.5 Especially don't take away things they have earned - Don't make allies betray the pcs
- Don't try to force a plot
If you promise them a reward and they get absolutely nothing, even less than nothing, you're potentially killing the joy of the game right then and there.
A much better approach that you usually get suggested is: start them out in a bad situation, don't force them into it.
So, say, in a session 0 you tell them that their characters will start in debt and that they will have to get out of it first before they can truly explore the world. This would serve as a great motivation to work towards the goals that they get from the npcs that hold the debt.
All of these come with some caveats and I can expand on the points if some of them don't make sense, but I don't want to spam the chat so I'll leave it there for now.
They won’t be paying the debt, the wider story is going to expand into trying to get the money back, discovering a conspiracy to do with the biggest underground thieves guild and them having the choice to do as they will. The thieves want to bring all out war because their leader seeks to make financial gain from it. The ‘debt to the ministry of adventures’ stands as a motivation for the real story to start and give me the opportunity to send a bunch a zany ‘debt collectors’ to try kill them and capture them along the way
@hearty escarp
Alright, but then my suggestion would still be to set this situation up before you start playing, basically as background info for the campaign.
Yeah we are having a session zero dw
I get to show them the lore I wrote for all the factions :)))))
But not for the villains
Yet
That’s a surprise 😈😈😈
But they will know the vibe of the faction going in
I’ll tell them a bit
But enough so that it feels like they themselves are discovering the dark underbelly of their own world
Thanks for the feedback!!!
I have so much lore!!!! I’m so excited abt it
I need to make a bit of a world map though ngl
And the battle maps for the first session
I found an amazing puzzle for the dungeon though
I’ve been cooking
Do you have anything interesting planned for during the journey?
I'm trying to figure out what rules she's using
@tacit whale , now that we're in the more appropriate channel:
Your Max HP should be 10, not 17. As per the Basic Rules, your HP at 1st level equals 1 Max Roll of your Hit Die + your Con modifier. The hit die of a Sorcerer is a d6, so therefore it should be 6+4 = 10
so my hit die should be a 1d6
Yes
I rolled a 15 tho
That is impossible since you don't roll for HP at level 1, and the maximum HP a Sorcerer can have at level 1 is 11 (excluding extra HP due to feats/race/subclass)
As before you should have 1 d6 hit die with 10 max HP.
If you are indeed playing with 2014 rules and have chosen the Draconic Bloodline subclass, then your HP will be 11 instead.
but I am supposed to roll for cha, dex, etc
Your Hit Die are not a statistic like STR/DEX/CON/WIS/INT/CHA
Yes that is not how you calculate HP by the rules
ohhh
See the links I provided above. Your DM seems to be homebrewing an HP system.
I’m new to DND and was reading the server rules and this is a question relating to what’s allowed or what’s not allowed. Let’s say I’ve play dnd long enough and decide one day to be a dm; am I “not” allowed to say make a One Piece campaign?
As for this question, you only roll if your DM has said characters will use rolling for stat generation. Otherwise use the method they say to use such as Standard Array or Point Buy. All 3 methods are covered in the Basic Rules section here.
Thank you!
This server doesn't host campaigns. Provided you were using D&D 5.14 or 5.24 rules, you'd be welcome to advertise for a campaign based on One Piece, as I understand it. What you couldn't do, I don't believe, is to advertise for a One Piece campaign using a different system.
@carmine shuttle thanks. I just was reading it wrong.
You're allowed to make a campaign any way you want, including ones set in specific media. Usually what the rules are referring to is what Jeff is talking about. Campaigns that use non-D&D TTRPGs or employ significant overhauls/additions to the 5e ruleset.
- An example of the former would be posting about a One Piece game using Pathfinder 2e.
- An example of the latter would be the Pokemon 5e or Fallout 5e conversions
Thanks
Afternoon all out of curiosity as a newbie to dnd what should I buy the starter pack or essentials?
I have a group of 4 newbie and exp dm wanted to get something to kick start the group so we can all make are own characters and start this journey
Your most economical purchase is either the current Starter Set, including Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, or the Essentials Kit, which includes Dragon of Icespire Peak. The latter used to (I don't know if it still does) include D&D Beyond codes for three free follow-up adventures, and for the Player's Handbook either free or massively discounted.
Both boxes include a slimmed-down version of the rules, a single set of polyhedral dice, an adventure, and 4 or 5 pregenerated characters with specific instructions for what to do when levels are gained. Both adventures are written with new DMs in mind; in my opinion Stormwreck Isle does a little bit better job of it.
Combine that with the Free Basic Rules to create your own characters and you're golden.
@carmine shuttle appreciate the help should I just get the essentials pack coupled with the full version of the players hand book?
The group is very dead set on making there own character and would prefer a physical copy and indepth version to help dive deep in the game/ character
Given that, I'd approach things like so:
- Buy a 2024 printing Player's Handbook. If you can check descriptions in-person, confirm that the Essentials Kit is still including the codes for DDB. (One of the mods might know the answer to that, too.) As I said, I think Stormwreck Isle is the better-structured adventure, but the extra value from Icespire Peak (if the download codes are still included) could conceivably get your crew from level 1-12, and a moderately experienced GM can work with the more sandboxy nature of Icespire.
- Start all together with a session 0. This will have all of the usual session 0 stuff (hard & soft limits, safety tools, brief intro to the region where the adventure starts)
- End session 0 by doing a mix of showing the pregenerated characters and giving people the option to build their own, working together so that everybody understands stuff together.
Do note that the Starter Set & the Essentials Kit were both written with 5.14 rules in mind, but all future stuff will be written with 5.24 (thus my suggestion to get 5.24 PHB).
im starting a campaign for my family im trying to dm any tips?
@carmine shuttle thank you very much appreciated
Are necromancers fun? I wanna make a wizard necromancer
The classic idea of a necromancer, a mage with a legion of undead minions, isn't exactly very easy to do in DnD. You don't get your first undead creating spell until at least level 5 anyway.
DnD tries really hard to limit the number of minions that your character controls.
If your potential players have previous exposure to the old cartoon, the principal characters of that show are available for download from D&D Beyond in 2024-legal level 1 versions.
@carmine shuttle love the great info appreciated I will look to see if chapters has the 5.24 pack.. it is the Dragon of Icespire Peak introductory not sure if that 5.24
Both were written for 5.14. I believe I understand there's a new starter set coming next year updated for 5.24, but 5.14 material can (if not otherwise reprinted) be used with 5.24 rules.
You're just starting off in a weird transitory time for D&D players since not all of the new printings are out yet.
@carmine shuttle ok 10/4
Oh OK I'd more like it for story than a bunch of minions just a few haha
You can adopt a bunch of Goblins and make them dress up as Skeletons
Yeses!
Skeleton* I wrote Goblins that dress up as Goblins
is it better to keep it simple when making my first character?
It's better to pick something you're interested in.
like a particular gimmick or idea for your character?
Start with the fiction. If you need help figuring out mechanics to match, folks here and in #character-discussion are really good at that.
But if you're actively interested in a character, you'll be more likely to engage with it on all the levels, and to eventually have the mechanics of that character stick in your head.
ill have a think then
I mean, one place a lot of people start with a first character is to pick a favorite character from books/film/tv and try to adapt them.
yeah that does sound good actually
And there are often multiple routes to a viable build, depending on what you like about them.
do i need any art to go with my character? or does it not really matter
like as a visual for other players
You do NOT need any art. If you end up playing at a virtual table, it can be useful, but not a requirement.
To take the character I've been playing most often recently: Taliesin is a human of very slightly below average height, with a reddish cast to the brown of his hair and beard, with just a hint of a point to his ears that suggests there's elven ancestry somewhere in the past. He's got the lean of a gymnast as opposed to the muscles of somebody who works out a lot, and a baritone voice that almost always sounds like he's asking a question. A dark shirt peeks out from underneath the studded leather armor he's wearing, and there are harp motifs worked into both the wirework on the guard of his rapier and the riveting on his shield.
Not a requirement. You make the art for yourself not others.
No art for him, but there's a lot of information that can help fellow players figure out what's going on.
ah okay i see
and then if i want to join someone's group i just bring them along and show the dm?
(I'll bet MightyNerd could identify species/class/subclass from the description above)
are they a bard because of the harp motifs?
So far, so good.
the only thing i can see for species is the elven ancestry
And I did say human, since that much was obvious. But the hint to the elven ancestry reflects that I rebuilt him from being half-elf in 5.14 to human in 5.24. 🙂
will the dm ever ask for specific things to do with the character
im just curious as to how my character would mesh with any story i guess
The answer there is sort of "it depends". A long-term campaign with a steady group, absolutely. But in the Adventurers' League organized play program, it's constructed around being able to move between tables.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

i'm probably looking to try and find a long term group so i hopefully wont have to make too many arrangements
is dnd beyond the character website i should be building on btw?
I happen to really like AL play. It opens up a specific kind of an experience called an epic, where you get a bunch of tables (at least 4, no upper limit) playing the same adventure at the same time, on a clock. And things that happen at one table can affect what happens at other tables.
For a first character, I advocate working with either a form-fillable PDF or a paper character sheet and doing it by hand. The former teacher in me says you learn more of what's happening in more depth.
sounds good haha
thats interesting, how constraining are the fifth edition rules for character building though?
There's a thread with the relevant documentation in the bot post above, but a reasonable heuristic to start with is "Official WotC material only, setting-specific material doesn't cross over unless printed in a generic book"
Is there any app I can use on an iPad to edit pdf text boxes & tick marks
I'd be surprised if there weren't an iPad version of Acrobat reader.
i'll probably have to do some of my own research to understand more i imagine
There in fact IS an iOS version of this, thank you
would you recommend doing anything else after making a character before jumping into my first campaign
Have you found a group already, or are you looking for one?
i'll have to find one probably, i dont think my friends would be too up for it sadly
You can always ask. And if you have a whole mess of you looking at starting simultaneously, either the Starter Set or the Essentials Kit are the most economical routes to getting started. (See discussion in this channel earlier today)
yeah maybe actually
but if not, would it still be fine to find my first group online?
Absolutely.
Yo
I have a list of fun stuff planned lol
A long list
That's the key part. If there's nothing interesting that happens during the journey, then you gloss the whole thing.
Like a hitch hiker or Broken carriage or a group of dead adventurers to show they’re getting closer to the goblin camp
If not, maybe the travel is just, "you ride on the regular carriage to your destination, watching the landscape roll past and staying at coaching inns. Several days later you arrive..."
That was going to be the kind of thing I was working on getting toward earlier, with the caveat that even the hitchhiker or dead adventurers can be scenery if the group doesn't interact with them.
I also wanna establish the NPC aswell so should I have him interact with them while they travel
If you have friends you should try and get them into it or you know use the internet
I have no friends :(
that’s sad I feel bad wait two seconds
Are you free on Saturdays?
Now it’s not finite but if my friend agrees I could get you in a campaign

How
I’ll see what I can do
Hello 👋 people. I'm new here. How do I find a DM looking for players?
#find-a-game channel has info for how to find games 🙂
I'm thinking of doing a game. I got a character I'm thinking of, just need to bring it to the table
Hi! Im getting into DnD with a group of friends and only one of them has ever played. I’m going to be the DM so I’m just looking for what I should get and tips/tricks. I have the stormwreck isle pack to get us all a feel for it :)
I definitely want to do my own campaign after this too
You doing in person or online?
In person :)
Great! Im excited for you! My biggest tip i wish i had before i dmed was to have all the monster stat blocks ready before you start. If you want to have them all up on a google doc or something where you can easily being them up, it will save you a lot of flipping through the book back and forth. But the biggest bit of advice is to just relax and have a great time. And dont be afraid to let your players talk and just sit back and listen.
Thank you so much! I was thinking of having a “cheat sheet” of that type of stuff lol
Then you're already thinking like a dm lol
I would also add: dont be afraid to go off book. Published adventures are great but if something isnt working, scrap it and go with what feels right
Noted thx u!
What’s the difference between a barbarian and a fighter? Isn’t both of there whole shtick just “me hit stuff real good”?
This cheat sheet might be helpful: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet
You can also find plenty of discussions on this server by searching for “dm advice” or “dm tips.”
One thing I think a lot of folks get wrong when trying to DM is thinking they need to know everything before starting—about the rules, about running/creating an adventure, about table management—and that just isn’t how anything works. You dive in with only a little learning and you pick up more as you do it. But keep an open mind, learn from mistakes, and communicate to ensure that everyone has fun, including you!
They are both good at fighting, but they have different abilities, which does change how they play to some degree.
Not trying to be insulting since I’m a fighter myself. Just genuinely curious
Barbarians tend to not wear armor, and they enter a rage state to help them deal and absorb more damage. Fighters have the most attacks among D&D classes, and they’re sort of jacks-of-all-trades regarding weapons and armor.
Fighters also have the option of going for a Dexterity-based build, as well as having their own selection of subclasses and subclass-to-class interactions.
And in 2024 onwards, they get substantially more things, as well as some different things. Such as Tactical Shift, Mind, and Master, giving them more versatility in and off the battlefield.
hey ive been interested in getting into dnd for a while now so if anyone could plssss help me get started id be really greatful

Hi im trying to learn how to play dnd and have done some research but the more i research i get even more confused i honestly never been exposed to the game but i just got really interested in it and decided that I will learn to play and eventually play with my kids when they get a little older! Can anyone give me a little guidance and where i should start? Is a good idea to try and play with ai? Really don’t have many friends and non that play this kind of games! 🤣😅 pls help!🥹😅🤣
I'd say the 3 best way to learn is:
- Read the player's handbook (there are free basic rules available on dndbeyond)
- Watch some youtube videos. Searching "How to play d&d" can save you some reading time if you find a good video
- Listening to actualplays online. Tbh this can be WAY more time consuming than just reading but it can be done passively while you're doing the dishes or out for a walk so its an ok option.
The pinned links in this channel are a bit more directed than just reading through the whole PHB (but thats probably the best way to learn even if it takes a few sittings)
like Shinslap said, 10/10 read the free basic rules or the handbook. If you're not a sit still and read kind of person (welcome to the club) there's a ton of great content creators over on Youtube/Twitch/Most Podcast services who either stream their games (Critical Role, High Rollers, and Dungeon Daddies are some great examples) or creators who talk about the game, the rules and how to play (some popular ones include Ginny D, the official DND youtube channel, JOCat, and on a more humor oriented but still pretty informative (sometimes) side One Shot Questers). Another great way is to read all the conversations going on across the server. Lots of cool tricks and things you can find out that way.
I’ve done some research! But definitely need to read the phb! 😅 I didn’t know that there was a link to it was deciding on the starter kit or the essential!😅 so i guess ill keep doing research! Haha thanks this helps!
Also where can i find this play by post stuff? Can i watch a session to see how it is played?
Another question solo adventure? Is it worth it?
?tag new pbp
there's some adverts for play by post stuff in #find-a-game I think - you can DM some of the GMS running those to ask if you can watch probably. As for a solo quest - they're fun~
This article has some suggestions for finding PBP games.
If you want to watch people play, there’s plenty of options on YouTube or Twitch.
Hello everyone!
I’m trying to get into the hobby how do I start can someone point me in the right direction please?
same here
Check the pinned messages on this channel for all the good basic starting info. You can also check out Youtube for tons of "How to Play" type videos. There is one by Ginny Di that was just posted yesterday that is all about if you have never played before. Its a good watch.
Where should I go from here?
I’ve done research on the hobby. Should I buy the players handbook or what’s the next step?
The player's handbook is a great next step. The basic rules are available for free on dndbeyond as well.
then you can look for an open game on #find-a-game if you feel you've gotten a good grasp on the system.
Yeah if you want to just try it out, you can grab the free rules and some friends and play. Then, when you're hooked, pick up that Player's Handbook
That’s basically what I’ve been doing already and I’m kinda already like a drug addict. I’m just waiting to have enough pocket money to buy the players handbook
Anyways, I think that’s all I need. Thanks for the help!
Im new to dnd and just finished a 3rd session with my DM. My character is a dragonborn warlock. i feel overwhelmed with all the spells and attacks i can pick....how do i know whats best for my character? (also. i should probably look at the players handbook...ive just been watching youtube)
I would suggest looking at the handbook for sure. As far as what spells and things are best for your character, there's really two ways to look at it and they're both valid: You can look at it from an optimization standpoint (highest numbers, most damage, etc.) or from a character perspective (what would your character prioritize).
It will take some time to look over what's available to you and decide which strategy you wanna go with and what options speak to you. So yeah, PHB is your friend
First off definitely read the PHB if you gave access to it!
Id say just skim over the spell descriptions and grab things that look fun. The good thing about warlocks is theyre simpler in the sense that they don't learn too many spells on a levelup compared to other spellcasters.
My character has the Fathomless as a patron and i seem to have even more options from that. Good thing my DM helps me but i also want to create my character vs him saying "hey this is cool"
That's definitely where reading the PHB and knowing the details of your options comes in handy to really take ownership over your character
also....the phb..its 5th edition...can we still use previous ones? it seems theres alot of controversy over the changes
PHB on my wish list but i also know there's free ones to download, i just do better with an actual book than electronic🤣
Yeah so there's technically two 5th edition PHBs: 2014 and 2024. They're not really that different but there are changes. Your DM will tell you if they're using 2024 rules. You're a fathomless warlock which is pre2024, but it should still work in a 2024 game
Everything that will come out going forward will use the 2024 rules so I would go ahead and buy the 2024 one.
i think hes using pre 2024. as we started talking about before the new edition came out and he didnt want to revamp some things he planned
But not everyone agrees
how often do the handbooks change? 10 years ish??? thats manageable
Yeah there's not a set time. And this one is kinda odd in that it's not technically a new "edition" which is usually what they do
weird
It's still 5th edition and all the old stuff is still playable. So yeah if you buy a 2024 handbook you shouldn't have to do that again for a good long while
haha. heres hoping
i already am thinking of another character since i am understanding this game better...is that normal!?!?! haha (kindof a rhetorical question) people probably create a ton of characters
i am addicted to creating characters.
do i dare ask how many?
currently i have 10 lol
oh thats not bad!!! lol
How many spells should a cleric have prepared at 8th level typically
Including their domain spells + cantrips
In 2014, it's a number of spells equal to your Cleric level + Your Wisdom modifier
So let's say your modifier is +4, you could prepare 12 spells
You get 3 cantrips to start with, and the class table shows when you get more. At 8th level you'll have 4
And any spells you get from your Domain are in addition to this, and all domains seem to give the same number of them, so you would have additional 8 spells specified by the domain prepared you would have at that level
So at 8th level, you should have about
- 12 leveled spells from your class (depends on your modifier)
- 4 cantrips from your class
- 8 specific leveled spells from your domain
Not counting any spells you might get from your race or feats, or specific subclasses
Ok good I’m not tripping my balls off
I had to do a double take at how many spells I had when I was redoing my character sheet (it was GARBAGE)
Hey can some one explained the concept of the underdark, lowerdark and stuff?
hi guys
is anyone more so active here rn?
i have never played dnd before and im fairly new to the game in general
but i want to get some nice things to encourage myself to play
what are some things ill need for tabletop?
Dice and an erasable grid map. The basics
hello can someone help me and teach me the basic to start playing d&d?? Thankss
ill be going to a place that hosts games so there wikk be an experienced dm
do i need a map and stuff?
i have a set of dice and a dice tray
and ive started by using my ipad to make my character sheet on
Id say just make sure to read through atleast the basic rules before the session and you should be fine
Dice, dice tray, character sheet are the main physical things players need
is there anything else i can get just to make it easier or my things more organized? im using dnd beyond is that any good to keep using?
Depends on preference. For inperson games i personally prefer paper character sheets. A notepad is good if youre the type of person who takes game notes
i cant really do texture of writing on paper too well.. haha this is really helpful though im just feeling SO overwhelmed with starting even though i know a decent amount going in
I don't know anything about D&D can someone teach me and edcuate me?
Honestly same

Here a bunch of resources to get you started. But for specific questions, you can of course always write here too.
The introductory videos are probably the best starting point if you're completely new.
I'm not sure how a DM would react to my character. My main concern is the backstory as I don't have anything to go off of
You wanna look for a game together?
I would but not right now it’s 2am for me
What's the backstory? Feel free to DM me.
Done
Often what will happen is that your group will have a "Session 0", where you look at what you're going to be playing. There, you can look at backstory together with the other players and the DM to see if it makes sense
Ahhh
I still have no clue how dnd works, but I feel like I will be obsessed if I were to get involved in this hobby
So... can you play on discord dnd? Like is there dice mechanic in here?
Hi, new player/dm here,
I'm trying to create an encounter and I'm wondering if it would be ok to have my goblin enemy to start his first attack by throwing something at a players' face as a distraction right before making the first attack (so they would gain advantage for this attack). Since I'm not trying to harm I think "improvised weapon" rules don't apply here and since I'm also not helping a fellow monster it doesn't seem to fall under "Help".
Is there a rule for this? (I haven't found it yet )
As a DM would you allow a monster to use a tactic like this?
And would you even allow a player to do this? (it seems like a really simple way to gain advantage)
Are you not allowing the players to roll iniative?
Yes I am, I'm just wondering if it would be a good first attack from that enemy
I'm not trying to make the players start as "surprised" with this, just trying to add advantage to that single enemy's first attack
There isnt anything in the rules for this apart from attacking from hidden, I would be hesistant to set a mechanic that allows for NPC's or PC's to cheese ADV.
What lvl is the party?
Level 1 are really squishy, Is it just the one goblin they are fighting?
There are 3 goblins in this room, they'll be likely at full health
Why do you want to give the 1 goblin advantage?
You could just give this particular goblin a special bonus action ability so they can throw the thing.
Just want to try out tactics that the enemies can have
I wouldn't mess with initiative order exceptions because that does then imply that the pcs could also do something like that.
Building it into the bonus action makes it clear that it's something the goblin can just do.
@hearty escarp wait, I can just adapt existing monsters like that ?
And since the goblin intends to gain an advantage in combat from it, it also sets a bad precedent if you don't handle it in initiative.
welcome to DMing 😄
Adjusting existing monsters for what you need is a big part
I wouldnt start doing that straight off the bat, but you can change anything you want as the DM.
There are some things that shouldn't be touched lightly, like number of capital A Actions a monster has, but giving it an advantage producing bonus action is a small tweak.
@hearty escarp I'm not sure what you mean with "handling it in initiative", initiative rolling has already been done here.
Yes, I was thinking of making 1 of these goblins their "leader", so giving it a little bit of a tweak sounds fun
Ah right, I was misreading part of your initial question. Sounds good!
Thanks for the insights everyone, a whole new world just opened XD
what do you guys think is the best way to introduce someone to dnd
Hi, I'm new to the game and server. How should I go about learning/playing dnd could someone dirext me in the right place if possible 👍
#learn-to-play and check the pinned messages here in the channel.
I'd recommend skimming through the free basic rules (check pinned messages for a link to them), try your hand at making a character so you can learn how that works, watch videos/streams of folks playing D&D (noting that they are focused more on entertainment then teaching how to play).
Feel free to ask specific questions here as you run into them.
Unfortunately we don't have time/bandwidth to teach folks one on one how to play D&D - but we can assist you by answering specific questions.
Ok will do, thanks for the help.
whats all the BG3 and 5E stuff
Can't remember the command - but Baldurs Gate 3 was based on D&D 5th Edition

Question, do i have to preselect spells for my slots before we start the journey or I can just select it in middle of a battle what we want to assign
The class description will tell you how your class prepares spells. Usually it's at the start of every day.
Oh interesting
You can't prepare spells in the middle of battle
So its basically after “a long rest”?
Yeah. Again check your class description as it will explain how your class prepares spells.
Alright thanks
Well it says warlocks do not prepare spells
So is it like i dilly dally start the game and select spells or something?
So in that case you only know what you know and don't get to prepare spells from a list.
So every time you level up you can update your spell list.
But otherwise you don't get to change up your spell list.
But warlocks do regain all spell slots after a short rest
So i just have to select what spells to assign in slots before each journey?
Hello 👋 super excited to be here looking forward to finding a group to learn from and grow with. New to DnD overall done some homework hoping to find a campaign to join 🍻
No - on every level you gain, you would pick spells from the warlock spell list that you could learn and use (and/or replace spells currently in your list). But you wouldn't be able to swap spells or learn new spells until the next level up.
What if my spell pool is bigger than my number of spell slots
Welcome! If you're new to D&D check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel.
Feel free to ask any specific questions as you run across them.
You may know more spells then you have slots to cast them all. This is normal.
Then it's a matter of - in the moment - deciding which spell to cast, knowing you may not be able to cast those other spells because you will no longer have available spell slots to cast them.
Thanks 😊 I'll head over and read up on it much appreciated. Hope I came to the right place to find a group to roll with haha 🤣 no pun intended 😜
If you're looking for a group, read #find-a-game (carefully) as it explains how to use our LFG channels
Ohhhh, so basically i have the choice to cast whatever i have learnt but theres a number of times i can cast it depending on the slots? Right?
Correct. The only exception is cantrips which are like "level 0" spells and don't use spell slots. You can cast them without using a spell slot.
Okay so that is very interesting, that solves my problem thinking that i might “take wrong spells” for certain scenario
Thanks again 😊 hoping to get my toes wet here.
I thought it would be like most games where you have to preselect spells before a journey from the list, but okay i love it
I mean you might end up in a situation where you don't have the most optimized spells. But that's part of the fun of D&D - working with the rest of the party to overcome problems and puzzles using the limited resources you got.
Oooo interesting
Now when i level up, do i get the option to select some of the spells or i get to learn all of the same low level spells
The table is interestingly written in the handbook so am a bit confused there
No - you can only have a certain amount of cantrips (but at each level up you can swap them out) and as noted, you can only "know" so many leveled spells and then you have limited spell slots to cast them with.
Okay okay, so when it says 2 spell at character lvl 1 and at level 2 theres 3 spell, does that mean extra 3 or total 3
So at level 1 you know 2 cantrips and 2 level 1 spells (but only have 1 spell slot to cast them with).
Okay okay, so how about lvl 2? Is the numbers added or its the total amount you have
So at level 2 you have:
- 2 cantrips
- 3 known leveled spells with 2 spell slots to cast them with
Also note that warlocks cast their spells at the spell slot level noted in their class table (exception is cantrips as they are not leveled spells)
Noted noted
HI
I think i have a somewhat decent grasp of dnd now? All i need is a beginners table to practice at

Oh forgot to ask, how does “learning something new” works like training in something to be proficient
hello everyone I'm completely new to D&D but I'm very interested so is there anything to help me start out?

Check out the pinned posts on this channel that explain all the basics. You can also check out this video on youtube: https://youtu.be/hNNBjVmNbQI?si=uX0VpLzmdbOvo7_K
Training
A character might be offered special training. This kind of training isn’t widely available and thus is highly desirable.
The character must spend 30 days with the trainer to receive a special benefit. Possible training benefits include the following:
The character gains proficiency in a skill.
The character gains proficiency with a tool.
The character learns a language.
highly noted
I should also note that training is very much a "ask your DM" kind of thing and generally not something to expect in a D&D game.
But never hurts to ask your DM about it.
So our little newbie DND group (myself, my partner, her sister, our best friend) were slowly partakimg in our first campaign. Learning rules (we realised we were doing saving throws wrong, among other things).....we purchased the new PHB and are deciding if we should redo our characters or keep them as prior......any help?
Ultimately its up to you. Personally, I like to be on the newest operating system lol. And if you plan to buy future stuff that comes out for the game, it will all be using the new 2024 rules.
Yeah we were planning on buying the Dungeon Mastera guide next week and the Monsters Manuel when it comes out, we just don't want to overly confuse ourselves
The 2024 updates make it a lot easier to understand the rules and mechanics IMO
For sure and there's no reason you can't keep going with 2014 for this campaign and then do another one with 2024 later on
Hi there, I'm very new to D&D, I want to run a TTRPG session for my family, myself, as GM my wife and my 7 year old. I have just purchased a copy of "Goblings: a Whimsical adventure", has anyone played this before, what else do I need other then the book and the maps and stuff?
Dice (physical or digital), rules (free rules should be fine but you can also buy the PHB if you want)
Where would I find the free rules? Just had a bit of a google
Thanks
Those are the ones for 2024 which don't have monster stat blocks yet (should after the Monster Manual comes out). Here are the 2014 ones that have some stat blocks: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Thankyou!
See I think we might be best to finish this campaign as you've mentioned and start with the 2024 stuff as looking at the newer PHB my bard is changed a little
If anyone knows of any homebrew campaigns that are set in a magic academy please let me know!
Does a Class feature count as a spell needed to take up a spell slot?
A Paladin has Lay on Hands feature and I am not sure if I need to treat that as a spell?
Only the spellcasting feature uses spell slots by default. If a different feature uses spell slots, it will say
Lay on Hands doesn't interact with spell slots at all
Thank-you
So much to learn in this game for me.
I know some people say it is easy but it takes me awhile.
Spellcasting is definitely a steeper learnign curve as something like a fighter, but you'll get the hang of it.
It confused me too when I started out.
Thank-you. Even more of a learning curve for me is to use a VTT.
I played 15 years with a friend who moved and then didn't have anyone so I started playing solo until someone told me about hte LFG feature here.
But using a VTT is taking me even longer to learn.
Would be nice eventually if they make a VTT much easier to learn.
There are easy to use VTTs like Owlbear Rodeo, but it's essentially a question of how many bells and whistles you want.
More complex VTTs can generally do more fancy stuff.
Yeah, I wanted a lot of features so used Roll20 but the features are less than I expected in some cases.
It does have some good features.
Thank-you
Off to get my computer looked at.
Yeah thats totally valid
Hey I have actually never played dnd and my sister and her friends wanted to play and asked me if I would like to join and i have seen a few plays but never understood how to set up or play the game could someone if they have time give me a view tips or tricks for understanding the mechaniks would be much apreciated
For the situation you’re describing, picking up the Starter Set is the perfect intro.
Take a look at the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
You may wanna check out #ddb-support
halo
Do I need anything else than the Dungeons & Dragons - Essentials Kit so start my first dnd campaign with my gf?
That's enough to start with
Might also take a look at the free basic rules
But really all you need is the game rules, dice (digital or physical), character sheets, an adventure to play, and a way to communicate
Okey, Would it be a good idea to buy the essentials kit alongside the Vecna: Eve of Ruin? It's a christmas gift to my gf, she loves Stranger things and baldurs gate 3 to death so was thinking why not combine them both in one gift?
I'd suggest getting the Players Handbook over the Essentials Kit myself.
The Essentials Kit is fine but it's like a slimmed down version of the game.
Getting the Players Handbook provides the full core rules and then a good start of base character options.
So player handbook+one campaign to go alongside it?
Yeah that would be my suggestion.
That said, feel free to check the book reviews, etc. and see what makes the best sense for your needs.
It's just the price that puts me off from it. Here atleast, it's more expensive than a newly released triple AAA game.
Would be fine if it contained some adventure/campaign.
Fair enough - you can start with just the free basic rules (less character options) but it has the core rules and is all you really need to start playing: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules

Would I be able to play any campaign with this? I tried once setting up a digital campaign for her on owlnbear rodeo by going by those rules - but we both quickly realised we prefer to play physically - the technical issues didn't help with matter 😄
Yeah you can play physically with this. You can print off the character sheets and fill them out as pencil & paper.
Print off what part of the rules you need to look at if you want. Or refer to the online version as you need to.
I see. Sadly the Vecna adventure seems to be out of stock everywhere in my country. Atm looking at Tales From Eriador, but seems like it doesn't contain any maps to play on? Are you meant to print them out? Sorry if it's a stupid question but kinda confused atm.
Maps are optional for play but yes you can print maps off as needed/desired
I bought the essential kit, lets start of small and easy. Don't wanna end up like when I bought dnd inspired table game for about 60 dollarsd for me and my friend, and after 4 hours of trying to set it up, we just gave up because it was so complicted 😄
So is anyone looking for a new player
but how do you play without maps to play on?
Theater of the mind - the Dungeon Master describes the environment and situation and the players tell the DM what their characters are doing and how they are positioned, etc.

I will just say, my memory is so bad I sometimes forget where my wallet is... this happens so often that my gf has started to slap me everytime I don't leave it in on the desk in the hall so I know where it is...
Yeah theater of the mind play isn’t for everyone
From my perspective, that stuff is for peopel who works at NASA or something.
Not necessarily. All the GM will need to do is be able to answer if something is in melee, move and melee, or “shoot it from a long way away” range.
This edition is not nearly so sensitive to positioning as either of the previous two.

hi
Hello
How many goblins would be appropriate for a level one party of 6 people
37
Could someone help me understand class building and how to find a team for a campaign
Goblins are 50 hp. The table on page 115 tells you how much xp budget per character.
50 HP goblins, damn those guys are sturdy lol 😉
This would be a good question for #dm-discussion
||7||
I think Hyper meant to type XP, going from the rest of their message, and would be correct in that case.
Hey. I appreicate the message wasn't for myself but I took a look in there. A number of the things listed are not available. I'm based in the UK. Would that be a possible reason?
Morning all. Question for you:
I've recently purchased a number of the newer core books and have played my first few 'one-offs' and am loving the schene (just gutted that it took me 35 years to make the jump!!)
I wanted to run a game for my kids and purchased Waterdeep - Dragon Heist. However, I had to purchase it from another source as it's out of stock everywhere and the interface between the US website and the UK one doesnt work very well and I don't even see it as an option over here (UK). Amazon is out of stock too.
However, I did find somewhere. Now it appears that it's actually 2nd hand... albeit in good condition..... bar one thing..... one important thing.........
The double sided map of Waterdeep is missing. Is there a way I can get my hands on this somewhere/somehow?
I can provide proof of purchase if needed.
I am addressing this with the company I purchased it from...... but who knows how long that will take........
Image search and a printer at the ready. If you don't have your own A3 printer you could set it to print across two sheets of A4.
Thanks. I'm looking through various sources now trying to work out what level of detail I need.
I kinda hope there might be an exact version that's been removed from the book.
hey so how do i find people to play my first campaign with? i just made my first character and i’m exited to start playing
I'm just hoping I can figure out dnd fast
The closest thing I got is baldur's gate 3 on console for dnd
Anything else I'm basically in the dark about
There's #looking-for-players , #looking-for-community , LFG on Reddit, LFG on the D&D Beyond forums, Roll20 for free games, startplaying.com for paid games and more.
Hello i never played dnd before but this year i started listening to dnd podcast's.mostly "the adventure zone" and liked it.i do wanna play it but i have no idea how ._.
I literally have no idea about the game but i like nature so decided to be that class
Not sure how i well make my carracter but i had the idea of being a specias from my own imagination is like a tiny mushroom like creature i know it sounds stupid but i like the idea of it ._ . A tiny mushroom like creature that live in the forest whit animals and love all of nature
dndbeyond is a good place to start making a character, you can also check the players manual
DnDBeyond (here often just called DDB) is the official website for dnd. It includes a character builder and the free rules:

Can't stop recommending this YouTube video for newbies https://youtu.be/hNNBjVmNbQI?si=B07P6dQPXsYrmPWL
Btw i did something and i wanna ask if its ok ._ .
So in my carracter sheet i couldn't find an owl because well my carracter is an owl so i chose a wood elf the closest thing to the owl is that ok?
Ty ill watch it today
Owlin race but it’s not in the free stuff
Thats*
Ilk stick whit the wood elf owl for now if that's ok?
If your DM s ok with that
hello
heyyyy im lowkey new to this server is there any place to look for player for a game bc one of mine player just isnt present so we need a back is there a place that you can like do a post for player to just come and play
So, we have the channels #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players. You can make a post in the Looking-For-Players channel, and browse through the ones in Looking-For-Dm to see if any of the posts there are a good fit. If you want to make a post in one of those channels though, you'll need to use the server bot and fill out a form via a command. The instructions for how to do so are in the #find-a-game channel. Just scroll to the top and read through the information there
ohhh alr thats pretty helpful but thats not very helpfull bc i was more looking for some person that just wanted to play a campaign and i could just say yo wanna play with my crew btw looking for players rn ') but yea thanks too
to hit an enemy do you need to roll a number equal to or higher than their AC?
Equal to or higher than their AC will hit
hii question! if im in a group and we have a dm but we r looking for one more person, which lfg should we post in?
#looking-for-players since you're looking for a player 🙂
Or you could alternatively check out posts already in #looking-for-dm for players 😎
Very handy place to find one additional player
Can i play?
Well i am looking for a party can i join?
thank uu
Hey I just posted a looking for player's dm me for more information if interested
Hello everybody, im a fairly new player and there are no people nearby that wanna play dnd so if there is any party i could join,
Check out the posts on #looking-for-players
Ok so you use your proficiency bonus on Ranged Spell Attack Rolls and any Weapon Attack Rolls you’re Proficient with, but NOT on damage rolls
Outside of monks, how would other classes deal with punching things / unarmed attacks
Since a lot of their attacks or actions usually involve an implement, spell, etc.
Since the Unarmed Fighting is now a feat, by picking that up. So that enables this for fighters, paladins and rangers.
As a new dnd player what's the easiest way to find people to play with because none of my friends are into dnd
If you want to find people to play with online, you can try #looking-for-dm / #looking-for-players , you can try the roll20 forums, reddit has dnd communities and particularly lfa subreddits as well
If you want to look in your area, you can try going to your local ttrpg shop or equivalent and asking if any events are happening, or perhaps facebook groups and meetup.com
Thank you @hearty escarp
This is kinda a stupid question but if I rage, make a strength weapon attack while raging do I get advantage to hit?
Then plus 2 to the damage I've rolled?
While raging, you gain the following benefits if you aren't wearing heavy armor:
- You have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
- When you make a melee weapon attack using Strength, you gain a bonus to the damage roll that increases as you gain levels as a barbarian, as shown in the Rage Damage column of the Barbarian table.
- You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/9-barbarian
So it just gives you advantage on strength checks and saving throws, not on attacks (that's what the reckless feature does)
What do I do trying to find a campaign as a young person because most dms don't want people of my age playing because they think I'm going to be immature or something and alot of people I know don't like dnd
Just like any social activity, take your time, read the room to ensure what you say/do is appropriate for the social context, and yes, being a minor does make it harder to find a D&D group due to social and legal issues around playing a game with minors that are not your own.
That said, many groups are fine with new to D&D folks as long as they've put in effort to learn and know the game rules and vibe well with the rest of the group.
Ok thank you
What kit/adventure do I need to buy if I actually want adventure maps to be included? I ordered the essential kit, assuming it contained maps for the adventures, but seems like it only contained the world/village map.
Most adventures don't include separate maps that you can actually play on. The assumption is that you'll do theater of the mind or draw them out yourself, based on what's given in the adventure
the essentials kit should come with a code for D&D beyond, so you can get the map image files from there
I don't have access to a printer.
That's one of my favorite part of DMing... making the maps.
I just have a dry erase map board that I scribble things on as needed 😁
Have you considered using a TV screen to display the maps on during the session, maybe utilizing a virtual tabletop? thats what I óften do
I print 1" graph paper on 11x17 paper at work and tape it together as needed.
oh yeah printing in a shop should be possible too if not at work
Not my cup of tea. WOC really milks their fanbase if they need to skimp out on a few sheets of paper 🤣
Just use a dry erase board or Theater of the mind then.
Most campaigns only come with a region map to slap on the table, there isnt one that comes with a selection of battlemaps.
Most D&D products are just books. You can find them new or used in bookstores, libraries, etc. You probably wouldn’t want to play on a map printed in a book, and if the books were supposed to come with external maps, that would significantly limit how they can be sold, shared, lent, etc
Can 3 people that are 15 and under help me play dungeons and drangons

hi saw you messaged this earlier as well. Like mentioned, you really shouldn't be exclusionary with ages and also that is personal information you shouldn't be asking server members for.
oh im srry
There's nothing wrong with wanting to play with people of certain ages, but it can make it harder to find a group. I'm assuming based on your question that you're a minor, so if you wanted a better chance at finding a game with people who would be your peers, I suggest:
- Seeing if your school has a D&D club
- Asking your friends &/or family
- Checking the local library for games
- Checking local game stores for under 18 or under 18 accepted games.
hi there
Welcome!
howdy
Its my first time dming any tips cuz i got no idea what im doint lol n seshion zero took no joke 11 hoirs to almost finish character sheets we arent using much homebrew mainly just jjba stuff cuz my friends lowk obbsesive of it
Hello, I’m new here and wondering what books I should get before finding a group
I’m thinking of the 5e 2014 players handbook and the 5e 2014 monster manual
It really depends on your role.
Are you going for Player or DM?
On player I don’t plan on dming
For players, I recommend
2014 PHB
Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Tasha's Couldron of Everything
should I also get the monster manual
It isnt really needed for players.
For DMs however, I would recommend it, the PHB and of course the DMG 2014
Alright, but I don’t really have to much to use so I gotta chose between Tasha’s and Zanathar’s, which do you recommend
Having all 5 will be pretty much all you reall need
Most likely Tasha's. It has a higher focus on character customizations
K thanks
i really should try to find a group to play with lol, my friends keep saying they want to play, but I have to do all the work for them, so Im just not gonna do it with them
Check the Looking-for-players channel. Great way to meet people!
thanks, will do
Question, is it normal to get frustrated with your players? Mine keep getting heavily off storyline and do random stuff like go and build sand castles or something (yes this actually happened mid campaign when i was trying to explain lore) and they kept laughing and talking over me
Are you lore dumping on them
That sounds frustrating, omg
No, I was telling a player what was carved into the walls and the others were just playing in the sand
Talking over others is quite bad table manners. Occasionally reminding people to stop it may be necessary.
'is it normal to have a group and GM who each have different ideas and expectations about what the campaign will be about and how it should be played'- yes.
best resolved by a pre-campaign conversation to learn about what your players want and how they want to play, and build the campaign around that.
so uh, i tried brute forcing a character since im entirely new
i feel like i did something wrong😭
is 18 strength a bit much for a lvl 1?
Depends what the rest of your stats are and how you got them
Well honestly i just rolled, since dnd beyond let me do that
Stick to point buy or standard array
dex - 12 con - 16 int - 11 wis - 13 chr - 12
thats the rest of em
a bit much for a lvl 1 no?
ahh, so 27 points is what you start out with?
no wait
ahh, so you start out with 8 points on all and get 27 free points
It costs more point the higher the stat
gotcha
Hey, I am new to this Discord-server waves
I am not really new to D&D as such. I played 4th ed. I played a little of 5e when it was released. Since then I have mostly played Holmes Basic D&D, B/X and various OSR retroclones and OSR-type games. I have just ordered the 2024 phb and 2024 dmg... preordered the 2024 mm. What can I expect? 🙂 Any pitfalls to look out for?
but if i understand right, you would be able to use the character i made thats lvl 1, as long as its cleared with the dm, right?
I’d say, just go in with an open mind, and don’t assume you know how something works just because it’s familiar. The 2024 PHB is still technically considered to be a 5e rulebook, so it is very similar to the 2014 one. Most of the changes are character customization options. But some of the gameplay aspects have changed, in minor ways. So it will be good to read through things thoroughly
well, if you aren't very careful, you may fall into the common newbie trap of playing D&D.
im sorry, there traps for newbies?
Oh you mean that treasure chest over there.....
why thats a mindfully inconspicious chest, sure dont hope its a mimic!
🙂
I usually DM for my kids, I'd very much like to participate as a player - so I'll be on the lookout for games in #find-a-game
i have a character that has a mimic that is a backpack/napsack
dont think anyones gonna sneak up on you thats for sure
perhaps 'D&D doesn't scale like 3.5/4e; monster HP goes up faster, AC attack and damage much, much slower.'
#find-a-game is just a list of advice and instructions. The actual game advertisements are posted in #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players
well if you wouldnt mind dm'ing and practically teaching a new player im up for it
I am aware of the bounded accuracy and I actually prefer that - but thanks for the heads up.
That depends on what your expectations for the game are. I DM my current games in a shall we say old school way: your character has little background from the start, the background is what you play and what happens, no main plotline, my characters can follow my hooks or go about with whatever they want. I improvise a lot so the story is more improv between me and the players. So if you are ok with that, sure I can give it a go. If you prefer a good story that you follow along, I am not the DM for that 🙂
Hi folks! Let’s try and keep this channel open for new to D&D folks get help getting started. See #channel-guide to see if there’s a channel that best fits the topic you want to discuss
dont mind it that way, gives it a proper fantasy feeling if you ask me
plus as long as you can help me learn the game im more than up for no story at all
Sure, I just need to get the books and read up on it myself. As I mentioned I haven't played 5e in a long long time.
you got plenty time for the books, i only really got time for a proper session during the weekends
since ive heard they can last up to 8 hours
They last as long as you want them to last. There doesn't have to be a set ending point for a session.
Sessions can be any length you like yeah. My group usually does 3 hour ones to make them fit on weekdays.
8 hour sessions are abnormally long, unless you meet monthly or something
even then its super long
my sessions are usually 4ish hours
As a rule, if a GM is going to allow rolled stats, they will want to witness the rolls themselves.
but why! of course i rolled 6 20's out of blind luck!
18 is the max you can roll
Remember if you're going to play Adventurers League, it's Standard Array or Points Buy only.
Alr i made a new character and i think this one wasnt as bad as the ol' one
Is there such thing as too much character depth lol
If you're thinking of character history prior to the first session at the table, there can be because the more details you put onto your character, the more constraints you arguably put onto everybody else. I'm a big fan fo summarizing your character history in 4 sentences:
- Who are you?
- What do you want?
- Where are you going?
- Why NOW?
I'm Big boss as you are too
I wish there was a metal gear solid ttrpg
Hey, I'm trying to make dnd characters and I was wondering if Dnd Beyond is that good for characters? Since alot if content is blocked off from not having the books
There are other options but you’ll have the same problem as you’ll have to pay for extra content
Anything else is pirated content and not a topic for the official server
Is good to understand the basic of the classes core
Any form of automated character creator is going to have the same restrictions, because those are a legal requirement. The alternative would be to use a character sheet (physical or digital) where you can freely enter whatever you want, rather than having it automatically fill in details for you. Pen and Paper obviously, but also things like just simple text boxes, fillable PDFs, Google Sheets, etc. If you have the information for your character from another source, such as a physical book, then you can write in your characters features and abilities manually
Hello guys, just a quick question, does anyone know if the "essential kit" will be updated to the 2024 new release of PHB, DMG etc..?
There will be a new Starter Set in 2025...
Is there a fighter subclass that let's you control a shadow puppet of yourself or something? I remember someone telling me about it but I'm not sure if it's rea
Sounds a bit like echo knight?
echo knight
Yeah yeah that's the one thanks
which is better for online? roll20 or beyond
Roll20 has a more extensive VTT support. The VTT provided by DDBeyond is still quite basic in comparison. But on the other hand, character management is way more refined in DDB.
So depends on what your priorities are.
You might also want to mix. There is a browser extension called Beyond20 that lets you roll in roll20/foundry directly from DDBeyond.
Is there a way to make sure your characters stats (charisma, wisdom, etc.) aren't over powered? Is there a certain balance?
Use the Standard Array or Point Buy system
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
as long as you follow one of the stat generation methods listed above, you will create something within the expected bounds for the game
Okay thank you!
I'm looking for 2 Players interested in a World of Warcraft DND
This is not the proper channel for advertising or organizing a game. Please read through the instructions in #find-a-game and then make a post in #looking-for-players or browse through the posts in #looking-for-dm
Would you recommend buying both Physical and digital books from Dnd Beyond? Or is the digital enough?
Its just a personal preference. Which do you think you would be the most comfortable using?
Do you like having something tangible?
Plus always remember, you're not BUYING a digital copy of the book. You're buying access to a digital copy of the book, which can be changed whenever WotC deems it necessary.

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of resources that can help you out. I would recommend starting with the Free Rules (under the Quick Links section). You should take some time to learn the basics before hopping into a game, but once you feel ready, you can read through the information in #find-a-game to learn how to look for a group
And of course, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We're more than happy to help
I have been doing some research and i have created several characters so i can get the hang of it and to have some knowledge of the characters details also been playing with ai but from what i gather is not really great but I’ve been trying for it to stay with in the rules of dnd 2024 rules!
Yeah, I would heavily recommend avoiding playing with AI. It won’t really be that useful in helping you learn or prepare to play with other people, nor will it mimic the experience in a satisfying way. At worst, it can give you wrong information and create incorrect expectations or habits
I fully concur with Colossus.
Problem with AI, as far as ive seen, is it will let you do whatever want. And combat doesnt really work.
Yeah haha i need help and probably a beginner friendly campaign!😅
Well I know Baldman Games has a virtual D&D weekend once a month and has beginner games. I'd check them out.
Another great option if you want a beginner game experience would actually be checking out your local game stores. Depending on the area, I’ve been to a number that host weekly or monthly DnD nights that are very beginner friendly. One of mine even hosts games online. Otherwise take a chance to reach out to some of the DMs over in #looking-for-players
Those game nights are often, but not always, on Wednesdays thanks to some stuff from the end of the previous edition.
Really? Ive only seen them on Saturdays or Sundays. Probably just depends on the store.
Beginner-specific stuff might be weekends. AL play is what has the Wednesday inertia.

Should i read the newest edition of the Players Hand book? Is the changes enough to be seen as helpful?
If you've got experince with 5.14, then I'd read the parts that apply to your (current) character(s).
Does every class when except monk, when spellcasting. Spend a long rest to restore spell slots, ignoring features in classes like natural recovery from Druid?
The broad structures are the same, but the details are sometimes different. Theme and variations, in a musicla sense.
I believe the Spellcasting class feature always specifies that you regain all your spent spell slots when you complete a long rest.
I would heavily recommend going through the 2024 rules, whether thats the full PHB or just the Free Rules. There's a lot of little changes in places you might not expect, so you can't just assume you know how everything works because you know the old version. Chapter 1 of the 2024 rules is a great introduction for new players, and does a great job outlining how to play.
How should I create a new character for myself before i start playing in a game/ campaign
if you don't have the PHB, you can download the free rules. It should walk you through creating a character.
Generally speaking, it’s best practice to make your character after you join a campaign. That way, your character can be designed to fit in to the game-world you’ll be playing in, and you can adjust to any special rules your DM might have. That being said, it’s not a bad thing to make a character ahead of time. It can be a good way to familiarize yourself with the rules. Plus, it’s fun! Just try to think of it as a trial run of sorts, or be prepared to make adjustments if needed when you actually join a campaign.
All that being said, if you’re looking for advice on how to make a character, there’s lot of programs online for that. Sites like D&D Beyond can walk you though an automated process, but you’ll only have access to the basic free content, or anything you purchase through their site. Other options would be manual, open ended processes like a PDF with fillable text boxes, or a Google Sheet. This would let you use content you have access to through other methods, like if you own any physical books, but obviously comes with the downside of having to do everything manually
flip side: Teh former teacher in me says that for your first half-dozen or so characters, having to do it manually gives you a better understanding of the character and how they work.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Its a preference thing, honestly
I've been playing for 6 years now, and I've literally never filled out a manual character sheet before
I don't think that hindered my learning at all
Though to be fair, you're also the kind of person who seems to really like understanding rules. So yes, it goes into the preference thing again.
I've definitely had players who didn't understand how something worked because the digital automatic sheet didn't make it as obvious as it would have been in the book.
And it's way less straightforward trying to explain a non-standart interaction like skill checks with alternative ability scores.
Whenever I ask for an alt stat ability check, I can hear my DDB users brains grind to a halt
I use ddb but I also know my sheet
It's partially just that it's not easy to roll an alt stat check in DDB
So they usually have to use some other skill or do math
But yeah, it's possible to use DDB and also understand the underlying rules for how things work. But it also makes it easy to skip that step 😅
Dnd player vs basic addition
Is a familiar worth it as a Necromancer?
Is it worth a 1st level learned spell? Yeah id say so
I may learn it later seems fun I need the armor I'm squishy haha
Didn’t I tend to I py everybody who exclusively uses DDB doesn’t understand what’s going on. More that getting multiple parts of your brain involved increases understanding over just using one part.
Was looking for some tips on campaign writing... I've never done it before and have this great idea. I tried pitching it in the looking for players thing and it seems to have some interest so imma try to write it but don't know how exactly to go about this. What should I do?
Try #dm-discussion 😉

How do you calculate throwing distance?
Well if you're throwing ranged weapons, the weapon will have a range specified (usually something like 20/60). Other than weapons, i'm not sure it's specified a throwing range
Hmm I was thinking artificers could be a really good stealth role yk. Throw a magically tinkered object like 40 feet away from you
Probably something to talk to your DM about
throwing a tiny object 40 feet would probably be fine
Yeah fair I'd say it's allowed though and it'd give you advantage on stealth roles
Hey! I recently heard from a friend that he had a lot of fun with his D&D group, so I decided to check out since I enjoy RPGs and Role play.

Do any of you have a want to do a campaign for me and my two friends we're all beginners we want something easy to help learn how to start playing dnd? If not then could show us anywhere to find a dm for us?
I could help
Do you have any dm's to help us out?
I can dm, I've been itching to do it for a while
could i join i really want to do my first campaign i just need my character set up
thank you!
Do you still need help with the character?
yes definetly
Hey newbies remember to take this to DMs or #find-a-game ! Unfortunately organizing groups outside of the looking-for channels is against the server rules 😅

uhh so i was just wondering what stat does cleric mainly use for spells
Wisdom
alr, thanks
I am a new player I am making a Forest Gnome wizard can anyone suggest some spells that I can have for each level
What level are you
what site do people play/make characters on?
Mythweavers works, for a non-automated sheet.
Mythweavers is an option, many people might grab formatted sheets from Etsy, a popular favorite lately is DnD beyond. Roll 20 also supports character creation in a campaign.... uhhh anyone else remember the rest of the options... there's a lot

Hello any experienced Dungeon Masters around? Looking for a fast Q to be answered if you have a moment!
Whats up? (ive got a few minutes but im certain another DM might also be lurking and ready to strike so ask away)
Check your DM's! But if you have to go no worries if anyone else is around too that would be great
Best ask your question here where everyone can see and respond to it
Also helps everyone learn together
hey, so what is a background for someone that is trying to become even stronger, higher, and just reincarnated themself just to become something even greater(still has memories) know any background that is perfect for this?
None inherently feel like something that fits perfectly. Maybe Folk Hero?
But backgrounds dont really provide major stuff, so just picking a background that fits something you were in the first life would work perfectly. The reincarnation is more of a backstory thing rather than a background 😎
You could also check out the "Dark Gifts" section in Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft for inspiration of how you could perhaps make some unique together with your DM. These aren't backrounds but they're an optional rule intended to be used in character creation.
hi guys
I’m pretty new to dnd
I’m a level 2 tiefling sorcerer subclassed into Druid
I’m looking for a campaign that can add a new memeber?
Check out #find-a-game
Also, druid is not a subclass of sorcerer, but its own class, so I assume you mean multiclassed
yes
Yes people, new guy here, just finished my first One-shot last weekend. Loved it.
Thats awesome!
I'm an advocate for doing your first character in any system by hand, using pencil/pen and paper or form-fillable PDF. gets you engaging with the system more, which helps in the learning process.
One of us! One of us!
hey ive been sitting in the chat for a few days deciding if I wanna get into DnD, ive never played nor looked at content for it, to my knowledge the only things that are really neccesities are the handbook and the rest I can find some website like r20 or DnDbeyond.
is there anything else i should buy before starting?
If you want to get started with the bare minimum, you can do so 100% for free. The Free Rules are available online, and you can use digital dice to roll for things. The Player's Handbook is kinda like an expanded version of the Free Rules, which mostly just introduces more character customization options.

?tag new demo
Welcome! The bot post above has some resources that can help you out. The Free Rules which I just mentioned are linked here, under the Quick Links section
That demo may also give folks a sense of how one gets started.
i know the rules of the game i mean the basics i guess i played bg3 and watch a huge campain played by streamers. But still i know nothing about how to create characters and stuff
Character creation is also part of the rules, so its still a good idea to read through them. Also, about 2 months ago, D&D when through some major rules changes, so the things you see in BG3 and older recorded games may no longer be accurate
One approach a lot of people take to their first character is trying to duplicate a favorite character from books/movies/TV
i get that but i think i wanna create my own charac idk i feel like it could be funny
BG3 was never completely accurate to the old rules of D&D anyways. It was based off the tabletop game, but they made some major changes to make it better fit as a video game
yeah i understood that a lot was made to get the game go a bit easier
Wasn't clear whether you just meant you didn't understand the mechanics for creating a character, or whether you meant you didn't have any ideas at all.
The point being, it would probably still be a good idea to at least glance through the Free Rules and familiarize yourself with them a bit
yeah sorry i got a pretty bad english 😂
I've seen worse from native speakers. Granted that they were usually teenagers, but....
what is dndbeyond
A website/service is the short answer. Its the official digital home for all things DnD and Wizards of the Coast. You can access purchased digital content, make characters for free etc.
ok, thank you
Np~
0
Do you mean level 1?
A staple general starter loadout imo would be:
- 1 offensive/damage cantrip
- 1 utility cantrip
- Magic Missile
- Shield
- Mage Armor
Then the rest of your starting cantrips and level 1 spells are largely up to you
@lyric fjord Just to second Star, a useful heuristic for spells at any legel is "half combat; half utility."
Unless you're my wife who only plays evocation wizards who "blow $#!+ up".
heuristics can be ignored. But, if you're looking at things for a first character, it's a useful guideline.
Having more damage cantrips can work fine. But I'd always recommend having at least one. If you go all utility, combat can be rough
Yeah. Part of my my AL Feylock spy has Eldritch Blast... because I know an AL adventure will have at least one fight, and Sleep in its 2014 printing was risky if a potential target hasn't been worn down a bit irst.
Thank you
thank you

Read the instructions carefully. It contains instructions on both making a post as well as where to go to respond to other people’s posts
*reads instructions on how to do smth and doesnt understand
"just read"
*wants to blow head off
Which part are you confused on?
Which part are you having trouble understanding?
Unfortunately, d&d requires some reading so this is just practice lol
good thing with dnd theres other resources to help me understand what the reading doesnt let me grasp
got it
Which class would you recommend for a beginner player?
Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, and Monk are all great for beginners!
What about the Druid class
Druid is arguably one of the most complicated classes, I believe.
It's certainly possible for a new player to pick up, but it's far from simple.
Oh, ok
I have another question. My first ever session is tomorrow, do u think it’s too late to change my character?
Only your DM can answer that one!
Ok thanks
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Any class can be played by a beginner. None are so complex that you can't learn them. But the Free Rules does come with some guidance on the basic complexity level of each class, as shown in the bot post above
If I were your DM, and you asked to change, I would ask if you already had another character prepared or if it would be prepared in time.
If the answer was no/maybe...I'd say no.
However if you had the other ready to go, I would be more likely willing
I'm not sure if it's here that I would ask,

i have a question, im not really that new to dnd but i was wondering if being a dullahan is an accepted race
That is not a playable race unfortunately.
It's not an official species, as a straight answer. But usually you can work with your DM to adapt one of the existing species.
Dullahan isnt an official race. But you can always use the Custom Lineage approach.
When in doubt, ask your DM 🙂
awesome ill definitely talk to my dms about it
ive heard dnd campaigns can last several months and even years, is there short campaigns that only last a few sessions / 1-2 months?
There are some D&D games that are just one-shots (1 game or perhaps 2-3 game sessions tops).
So I'm really new to D&D and I'm having a hard time understanding the rules and how to make a character, would you guys recommend taking more time to learn or maybe joining a community or something and learning with others?
I'm already reading everything I can on how to play lol I'm just having a hard time understanding it all
The most common format a series of one-shots would be the Adventurers League Organized Play program

Ok so question
If i am a chronurgy wizard
When i level up, i can learn ANY spells of my choice
Including necromancy or whatever
Is that right? Or is there a rule
And if i am a chronurgy wizard, when i level up or does not level up, do i automatically have denomancy spells in my spellbook? Or do i have to choose them from leveling up etc. Etc.
Hello, just a question since I'm trying to start dnd, should I prepare a carácter for a specific edition and look for them or should I get the rules of a campaign in a group first then make the carácter around them?
It’s and 2 spells of your choice, of a level you can cast.
For your second question, no. The dunamancy spells are just added to the list of spells you can learn (as long as they go along with the previous requirement)
So am i able to learn ANY spell including necromancy even if i am a chronurgy wizard?
Yes
So the only difference in these subclasses are not the spells but the additional features they give right?
So a wizard could basically have necromacy abjuration and all over the place
Right?
Yup!
Well i'll be damned
But is it still better to focus on a single school though?
Either choice is ok. I’d recommend picking the ruleset you’d want to play in first so you don’t end up learning 2 editions at the same time. Making a character before joining a game can be great rules practice even if your eventual DM rejects your initial character idea.
Nah not really, there’s no benefit. I’d recommend looking at the actual spell effects to determine if you’d want them or not instead.
So create the carácter first with the official rules and then modify it based on the dm's response or if completely declined then just make another one with the dm established rules
Well damn ok, but i am still worried though
Since this seems to implies that each school can access to specific spells
Hold on i cant send picture
If you can upload it to a trusted file sharing site like Imgur or Google Docs you can do that
Ok but the website says dunamancy is mostly exclusive to 2 subclass
What does that mean
Does that mean the other subclass cant pick them when they level up?
Ah I see you’re correct. That exception exists only for Dunamancy spells since it’s a rule baked into the rulebook they come from
So only Chronurgist and Graviturgist Wizards can learn Dunamamcy spells
Ah, ok what other spells is exclusive to some subclasses, since i just wanna check what i cant learn when i level up
No other spells are subclass specific
Spell exclusivity is normally reserved for class spell lists (I.e. Druid vs. Wizard)
Ok so only the dunamancy are exclusive to subclass
Correct?
Yeah
Nice
So i still have to pick 2 spells when i want to have dunamancy spells when i level up
Ight, thanks

ok thank you
Hey this is a pretty dumb question but, what exactly are warlocks meant to be used for? Like play/fighting style?
I mean wizards and sorcerers have access to at least like 5x the amount of spells as warlocks, and while I realize warlocks get their spells back on a short rest, and can get innovations to cast ~very~ basic spells for free, or boost their eldrich blast. What exactly are the archetypes that warlocks fit? Are they more like the melee variation of spell casters? Tanks? Utility class? I don’t mean their mechanics, I mean what exactly is the difference between a sorcerer or wizard, who have access to a ton of spells at a time, and a warlock, who has access to 2 but can cast them at top level? Ignore this if it’s a crazy dumb question
Think of warlocks not as full spellcasters, but as fghters who get extra cool stuff.
Same way a fighter gets extra attacks and can keep swinging their sword, Warlocks get extra eldritch blasts and and keep pew pew pewing away.
But additionally, they can cast some spells and have some really fun invocations that make for great flavour and RP.
Gotcha okay, so yeah like melee spell casters sortve? I assume extra health and more weapon based spell options?
handwaves
The thing is they don't have to be. They get features to customize their role quite a bit more flexibly than other classes. This is done through invocations.
So a warlock can go into melee if they select the invocations that make them good at it. But they could also blast people with spells at range.
Lol it just took me over an hour to read chapter one of this guide, it’s so long
Fighting doesn't have to equal melee. In the same way a Fighter can use a Bow.
The hobby does take some reading but honestly a good way to learn it is to watch it played or better yet play it.
It's honestly better to learn from actually playing it, or just watching guides on youtube.
That's good

Well dnd is the place for you to make that character imagination is your limit though don't try to make a Mary sue. I would recommend getting dnd beyond if you need to ask someone who knows how to use it help you make a character.
ye I need a person to help me make a character where can I ask someone
Character discussion probably would be the best place
Have you read through the information and links in #learn-to-play?
You may also want to take a look at the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Okay it's time to study.
Feel free to ask specific questions here (or in an appropriate channel - see #channel-guide) as you run into them.
Yo how do i get in a campaign

Is there a limit to the times i can use a invocation for the warlock ? If i can cast fals life as often as i want, dont i have infinite hp ?
No. The temp hp false life gives isnt HP. It doesnt stack at all.
But once i take damage cant i recast it ? There doesnt seem to be a limit or out of combat casting rule
Sure you can recast it assuming you're conscious
The best you can get is the maximum from the dice, but yes.
It also takes your action, which is a sacrifice
thx i will consider it 🙂
The important thing here is that False Life grants your a resource called Temporary Hit Points. These are not Hit Points, and they have their own rules.
Specifically, you can only have Temporary Hit Points from one source at a time. If you cast False Life a second time, you don't add those new THP to the previous one. You either keep the old amount or replace it.
Only lasts an hour at a time, too.
Notably, the 2024 version does not expire and grants more temp hp.
Ah, there was an ad banner hiding where it said Legacy.
Sorta like how you keep the THP gained from becoming polymorphed if the concentration is dropped
If I make and design a character can I do so without owning books
yes. The Free Rules provide the bare minimum you will need to make a character.
As long as you have (legal) access to the information, why not? Free rules, library, shared content from a GM?
Ok thank
Only sorta. Polymorph requires concentration and the rules for concentration are such that it can be argued that you lose those thp.
That’s fair, I never even considered that argument
Hey, I am currently wanting to get started with D&D, my only experience is through BG3. I’ve never played before but kind of made a character already. The lore originates from the Dragon Age realm but I’m sure could be easily adjusted to fit into whatever realm. I’m not sure how to play or where to start. I just wanna join a campaign and get started. I have friends that wanna play but they’re all on different schedules so I’m trying to join others who want to play so I can at least start to figure it out
Somewhat familiar with the game rules? (check #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel)
Then if you're ready to find a group, read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
Also, just in case....

These tags are your bane, Jeff
Yes. Yes, they are.
But I'm OK with that; I have specialities elsewhere.
Thank you so much! I’ll watch the video! It feels like a lot trying to get started, there’s so much information to take in
There is a lot of information - but also remember you don't have to memorize it or know it all.
The big things to focus on are how to create and use a character sheet and then the core mechanics for D20 tests (attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks).
You'll pick up more as you play but having familiarity with those parts will really help.
Yup. The core mechanic (aka, how to do a d20 test), plus the stuff for your character are all you need at first. And I'm a fuddy-duddy who suggests you build your first 2-3 characters by hand rather than using an automated tool, because the former teacher in me says it helps in really learning the stuff.
So you recommend having multiple characters as well? I’m guess in case one dies?
More that most players end up with more ideas for characters than they can ever actually play.
For example, over the next month, I'm setting myself a goal to get one character sheet per day from Dec. 1 - Dec. 25, generally built up to character level 9, sometimes single-class, sometimes multiclass, and share them a bit at a time. Sort of an advent calendar of sorts, if you will.
Occasionally, I might build them farther or say it's not needed to go quite as far as level 9 to establish the core mechanical identity. And at least two of them are going to come about from things I did in #character-discussion helping people out with how something might look.
Hey. Question.
Is the BOOK for Lord of the Rings available? AND is it available in the UK?
The cross over between DnD beyond and Wizards for UK books is so messy.
On DnD beyond it says it's 240 pages full of xyz, yet when you try to purchase it, it's the digital version. Is that correct?
It is currently available on DnDBeyond's marketplace as a digital product. I do not know if any physical books for it are being sold or available but if they are, it is not through DnDBeyond.
Also for future DnDBeyond questions, please use #ddb-support.
This channel is for D&D newcomers to get started with learning the core game rules and mechanics.
Thank you. Apologies on the ddb bit. I thought it was all together.
Thanks.
Hey! I'm new to DnD, and I have never played it before. I want to, but no one near me that I know of plays it. Is it possible to do it online?
Yep! Playing online is a fairly common thing to do. Perhaps more common then playing in person, post-covid
Is there any common place to do that?
usually its done over discord servers, or other means of voice chat, and often the players use a virtual tabletop, like roll20, owlbear rodeo, foundry etc
Check out #looking-for-players for ppl who have posted looking for players for their game
No problem!
D&D is played in the imagination, so you don't really have to go to a specific website or program to play it. All you need is a group of people, and a way to communicate. There are various different places you can go to find a group, such as the looking-for channels on this server, or other discord servers, reddit, facebook, etc. Once you have a group, you discuss how you'll want to play together. Voice chats over discord or skype are common. Some people like to play by text-posts instead of voice chats.
There are other tools that can help make running the game online easier, such as digital battle maps, digital character sheets, and more. These tools are optional, but fairly common. Your group will also discuss which of these tools you may use
Also - you can totally start an in-person group of all newcomers! I've had a lot of success asking friends/acquaintances to play, even if they weren't the "D&D type" already
I think people are afraid to ask their friends and family thinking its too nerdy, but i agree, if you're interested, its likely someone else you know is too
That’s the entire purpose of the Starter Sets/Essentials Kit.
im dum
I got Into the game from some of my friends and was looking to find a campaign
I want to get into dnd because my friend DMed a lot and it always looked like fun but even after we talked about dnd a lot im still confused😭

Hey how loud are somatic components of spells? Like ofc doing it infront of someone, they'll hear you. But if I'm in a crowd of bustling people and go to cast detect thoughts. Is everyone gonna turn to the guy waving his hands and shouting like a maniac?
Or if I cast detect thoughts (just an example) while sitting in a tavern, to listen in on what the next table is thinking. Will they hear me?
Or verbal i meant
It is identifiable that someone is casting a spell -e.g. like someone saying "Abra Cadabra" before casting a lightning bolt
Ah so I'll need Subtle spell if I ever wanna cast without detection in public?
Like I'm always shouting my spells otherwise?
Not so much shouting as that you're doing all the things identifiable as casting a spell.
Mumbling weird incantations, grabbing a weirdly shaped wand, and waving fingers in a rhythmic motion... and yeah, most folks would recognize you as casting a spell even if they don't know what that spell actually is or does.
Ahh okay, that's def a set back. I was hoping to play a conman bard with a lot of enchantment or illusion spells to use in roleplay.
Was thinking about taking metamagic adept but damn, only 2 sorcerer points and it never goes up? That suuuucks
Got to give sorcerers their niche... 😉
That said, your DM may be okay with making it harder for folks to identify you as the caster of a spell based on the context of your game (e.g. peeking around a corner to cast at the target).
True true, I'll have to talk a bit with him. I mean I also have the college of Eloquence subclass, and because of that "silver tongue" trait and my expertise- I literally can't roll lower than a 20 on perception or Deception at level 5. Crazy subclass, pretty new player so idk if that's a well known thing.
So yeah, might not necessarily need those manipulation spells too much, but my dm seems really into my character so hopefully he just runs with it. It's literally part of my backstory that I used my spells to pull off small scale cons and schemes, so it would fit.
Anyway thanks for the help tho! Really clears that up

I am a new player that wants to try playing through some of the original campaigns, such as forgotten realms, dragonlance, etc, since they seem interesting and I want to learn more about them. But it seems everyone in the looking for DM or looking for players sections are looking for people to play original homebrew campaigns. I do think playing those would be fun eventually, but I want to try the regular ones first.
How do I find a group interested in trying these older campaigns when every post on the channel is about homebrew or original campaigns?
You can search any given channel by keywords, but it's a dice roll whether you'll get any relevant results.
Or you could always post an ad looking for folks who want to do that. The maxim is if you want to play in a specific type of game, run it, and since DMs tend to get more candidates than a game needs, you should be able to have your pick.
What do you mean by run it exactly? If you mean DM the game, I do have some interest in learning to be one, but I would like to play through them as a player first before trying it as a DM so I am not spoiled about what will happen, which leads me back to my previous issue of finding groups interested in these specifically.
Also, if by posting an ad you meant making a post in looking for DM, I did try that, but didn't get many responses, and those that did seemed more interested in recruiting me for their original game than helping me play one of the original campaigns like I wanted.
Sup
Keep trying. Those posts come and go so fast and people check this sporadically. You just have to keep at it and eventually you'll find a DM that is up for what you want.
Hi! I am completely new to this, and I’m looking to make some friends or just meet people who can teach me & maybe join some games? I’m a complete amateur but I love all things fantasy, I’m a huge nerd & a big fan of baulders gate 3 and I’m a little bit of an artist so I think I’d like to have some fun designing characters & stuff like that. My dms are open for anyone who wants to say hi

Is there a good place to find people running one shots I haven’t played a DnD campaign before and not sure I can keep up with months-year long time commitments is there a place where I can find week-month or two long campaigns / one shots everyone here seems to be looking for campaigns
StartPlaying lets you filter games by schedule, including one-shots. Otherwise, I just suggest you look at other avenues besides this server. I list a bunch of options in this Looking for Group/Game guide.
Also if you look for local or online adventurers league games, those are usually one shots
Hello folks,
**is it possible to DM for your very first game?
If yes, then what are some essential things I will have to keep in mind while DMing? ** (Things that come up the most often)
I am thinking of doing a small campaign inspired from Lost Mines of Phandelver with mostly threatre of mind and some combat with any VTT.
Sure. It's a bit more work but it's definitely doable
Any advice for a new DM, Queen of Squirrels...
- You don't have to memorize the rules, you're supposed to look things up
- Don't be afraid to tell your players no
- Don't plan too hard because your players won't follow it anyway, but if you're the type to prep it can help
- it's often easier to start with a pre written adventure until you get the feel for things
- work with your players, not against them (you can be on their side while still playing the villains as challenging), and vice versa. It's a collaborative game
Thank you 🙂
I shall personally addendum:
- You don't have to memorize the rules, you're supposed to look things up
However reading through things to at least once internalize this rule exists, that rule exists, and thus where it is, is important. You're still not memorizing the rules, you're just putting the existence of those rules in your memory.
- Don't be afraid to tell your players no
But particularly, you can say "No, but". Otherwise, "No, and the reason why is..." is very good.
- Don't plan too hard because your players won't follow it anyway, but if you're the type to prep it can help
"Quantum Modules" are a good tool. As a quick example, If you need them to go to a temple, the temple could be a jungle, desert, or mountain temple, so wherever they go, they find the temple.
- it's often easier to start with a pre written adventure until you get the feel for things
✅
- work with your players, not against them (you can be on their side while still playing the villains as challenging), and vice versa. It's a collaborative game
I will concur and reiterate. You aren't out to win. Your win is the traps being scary, the puzzles being engrossing, the fights being engaging and tense. That doesn't happen if rocks fall and everyone dies.
For DM-ing advice there's #dm-discussion . However, since you're mentioning non-D&D TTRPGs you should probably post your question in #non-dnd-topics
Oh mb, thanks for letting me know.
wsg, im new here, I just recently went into Dnd when me and my friend started rolling a d6 dice to play a scuffed dnd type game cus we were bored in class and I started reading the player handbook, I just started chapter 1
Welcome!
Hello, we are switching from PF 2 to DnD 2024. There is a sale going on on Curse Of Sthrad and CandleKeep Mysteries. The CKM got mentioned its compatible with 2024 rules, that means that curse of sthrad is not?
Because the 2024 rules are so similar to 2014, they're all pretty much compatible.
Candlekeep Mysteries is a younger release, but it was still developed for 2014, same as CoS
Hello, i am a new dnd player (dm) and i am trying to make a good story for my players does anyone have some tips on how i make a good story?
My first advice would be to take a prewritten adventure (https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf?icid_medium=ddb&icid_source=article-1625&icid_campaign=free-intro&icid_content=peril-in-pinebrook) to start, so you can try it out without too much pressure to come up with everything yourself.
But that's by the by. To answer your actual question:
- Start with a strong hook. Players will be much more interested and engaged if they know what their objective is.
- Give plenty of hints. If they lose the plot thread, be ready to reinforce where they should go next.
- Be ready to adapt to their actions. Nothing ever goes to plan in DnD. Be flexible in what order they can do things in, but don't worry too much about repurposing adventure pieces.
My addvice is to run a pre written mudual. ecpecialy if it's your first time dm'ing
Thank you!
Hello! I'm sort of new into dnd. I alr have the beginners handbook and such (and cool dice :D!!). I'm still a bit inexperienced, but it's nice to meet y'all
Nice to meet you to
Hello!
I am reading peril in pinebrook and it says: Athletics +6.
How do you determine a characters athletics?
I tried google but i think i am using the wrong words cause its not giving me the answer i am looking for.
I gues i will find a guide, but i expect then some combat changes on my part since story or skill chcecks can remain the same right?
Athletics is a strength-based skill. You can see the list of skills and associated ability scores here.
If you have proficiency in a skill, you gain a bonus, called a proficiency bonus, which goes up in level. You'll also find that in here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Skills
Str mod plus proficiency if they are prof
Thanks!
Yeah, common wisdom right now is that you'll probably need to adjust some enemies to be slightly stronger, but as someone who has been running 2024 characters with 2014 monsters, it's still quite similar.
You might want to eventually get the 2024 monster manual when it comes out next year and replace the monsters in the book with those, but I don't think it's strictly necessary.
You'll notice, especially since you're coming from PF2, that 5e encounter balancing is a lot more handwavey than what you might be used to.
It runs at least 30% on vibes.
I think Candlekeep, Vecna, and maybe Infinite Staircase are the only adventures published after the new printings had a 2024 date announced. So they’ll advertise the compatibility for marketing purposes (and may have been developed against some of the playtest iterations). I have played exactly 0 games of any edition of PF, but my impression is that 5.14 and 5.24 are more similar than PF1 and PF2, just as a point of comparison.
so purely speculative, but couldnt i take pretty much any humanoid race and act like a human if i made them look like it?
also if i made a character that starts out as lvl 5 be fair as long as i made him have weakness's that made him practically worth a lvl 1?
like the character has some sort of curse that might affect his combat
Characters could be flavored as being human, sure (Though it would still be up to the DM to approve). Though if you mean a character pretending to be a human while they're not, that might be subject to some rolls to determine the success of it 😛
As for level, the party generally should be the same level, and no good DM is gonna let you play a level 5 character regardless of any curses when the rest of the party is level 1. That's just gonna cause all kinds of problems. There are lot of campaigns that start at higher level though, so you might be able to find one that starts at 5 if thats the level you feel like starting at!
I mean more as in looks like a human just with the benefits of another, like an elf or dwarf
That's something to discuss with your DM!
Reflavoring is usually okay, but you'll still want to talk to your DM yeah
What you're referring to is "reflavoring". Taking the mechanics of one thing, and making it look like another.
now? just a goliath that just has some human looking things like tanned skin rather than grey
did talk to my DM tho, just gotta wait for a response
Hello, I'm new
Just joining while waiting to dive deeper once chirstmas starts. I'm still a student so I'll come back to this very soon
Though, quick question. Can I ask about Dungeon Mayhem here aswell?
I have no idea what that is
Looks like I'll have to wait for someone who knows about it😔.
It appears to be a D&D board game / card game by Wizards if the Coast, so yeah seems like you could ask/talk about it here
Unsure about the right channel for it though, as while it is D&D themed and by the WOTC, it's not the ttrpg 🤔
Well, I'll ask once for now and wait
Should I get the original or the expansion pack monster madness?
I heard you can still play it as normal just without the original first 4
What am I missing? Level 2 Sorcerer character and I cant see Misty Step as a spell option when setting up my character in DnDBeyond. Using the new 2024 5e rules. Everything I read says it should be there. Anyone have any ideas?
Unfortunately, you may be a level 2 sorcerer, but that is a 2nd level spell. You won't gain access to it until you're a level 3 sorcerer.
You can consult this table to see when you gain access to higher level spells as you level up.
Ah. That makes sense. I read it and assumed that it was a spell for a 2nd level character.
Thanks for clarifying.
It's a classic mix-up!
But, for example, the highest level spells are 9th level, which you don't get until your character's at least level 17. A bit unintuitive at first, but that's what the table is for!
Thanks so much for explaining. I took the "level 2" part quite literal and didnt understand that distinction. Its my first time playing a sorcerer, and first real game with 5e. I was googling what good sorcerer builds could be and kept seeing that spell listed as a must have. But looks like I'll have to wait for another level to get it. But getting there is 90% of the fun.
#dnd-media would be the place to ask

Question. When's the best time to get some of the books?
I'd like to get them digitally from DnD Beyond, but $30 per book is a bit too much for me
Well, the Black Friday and Digital Monday deals are probably going to be the lowest they’ll be all year. I assume.
And they're going to be soon, I assume?
To be honest, I don’t know. #ddb-support may have more information about sales
Can someone help me with making an character sheet for e5
This is my first time playing DnD
i want to play a tabaxi rogue with 1 level in bard that has high charisma and dexterity and uses a rapier as his primary weapon
Do you want to start as a Bard or a Rogue?
That'll determine some of your starting skills and proficiencies
Do you know if you'll be playing with the newer 2024 rules or the more classic 2014 rules?
Sorry my spelling is bad
2024 I believe
Nah it's good, English is a rough language even for native speakers
I know
