i would be considered a younger player so i was wondering if there are any age group based parties?
You can look through #looking-for-players and see if folks have games withing your age range (make sure not to solicit or share personally identifying information such as exact age).
yeah ofc thank you i appracate it
Guys, is monk a good class?
I figured it would seem cool, but idk Abt battle prowess and balance between battle and gameplay
Sure - anything that sounds fun and interesting can be fun.
Don't always believe the memes and chatter of others. Try things for yourself and find what works for you and your games.
We started playing stormwreck isle and Im the DM. My players have fought the zombies and explored the dragons rest, but how can they progress to other places?
I’d suggest asking in https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1029841458661957682
Can someone please tell me how to make my character?
Chapter two in the Free Rules does a good job of walking through all the steps.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
Did you have an idea in mind already?
Hey, so I’m new to this but I’m working on a character based on tai lee from avatar. What I have so far is a bug bear monk, who will eventually put two levels into fighter for action surge and will monk subclass into way of shadow. I’m trying to think of the best way to go about my playstyle, and so far I think this is my best combo. Any recommendations? My goal is to hit a ton and cripple any attackers, and I think that the monks access to stunning strike and the way of shadows “silence” ability is the best I’ve found
(The campaign hasn’t started, I’m still level one and this is all just plans)
No im trying to get a typable character sheet
In stormwreck isle, how can the characters get to the seagrow caves.
You can use this one in the Free Rules:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/downloads/2024-character-sheet.pdf
#character-discussion can probably give you some pointers!
Yo! I’m new to this but would be grate if a group would take a Dragonborn paladin class, any groups who are tryna play would be grate!

what do barbarians do?
i want to be one but see no fun in it currently other then they are invincible
please use reply
they are melee fighters, often the primary damage dealer of the party.
How would someone play the monk class, asking for a friend
They’re a good choice if you want to get up close and hit hard.
But you should pick whatever class excites you most.

Fighter is one of the classes in game, which gets proficiency in quite a few things as detailed on their class page. You can check it more in-depth here:

Quick question is there any class that's able to use guns. I'm not talking ARs or anything like that. Something more along the lines of a flintlock or revolver etc?
If your DM's world has guns, any player with proficiency in martial weapons can use firearms.
ranger
The reason I ask is because I've never played before but I have an exorbitant amount of homebrew ideas if I could run anything like that by anyone?
ranger really likes guns
@cold hollow lmao
there are guns in the base rules
If you're looking for advice on your homebrew ideas, you can always check in with #homebrew .
@timid locust @cold hollow thank you.
there are also grenades
Take note that the usual recommendation is to avoid homebrew if you're a new player. No sense in custom modding your car if you're still learning how to drive, after all.
and there is a spell called magic missile, its basicly homing missiles
@timid locust makes sense
@cold hollow see I knew about that but I am looking for a more physical type of weapon
i recommend using a ranger and using pistol and shotgun proficiencies and if you want it really good, i recommend using the aarakocra race
It really depends on the archetype of “gunslinger” you’re looking for, and only Artificers get firearm proficiency out the gate. Everyone else needs to pick up the gunner feat
That's incorrect. Firearm usage is granted by martial weapon proficiency if the setting has firearms as a common item.
Fighter has subclass for this especially
Not officially, no.
The only book I currently have access to is the PHB
So how do I find a game?

That
If you've already read through the basic rules and feel like you have an understanding of the game, you can start your search on this server with the link above!
If you want I'd say ask for help from a dm to learn the rules before you join a random campaign
Okay could anyone point me in the right direction? I don't know many people irl.
You know any people who like writing books or stories?
Other than myself no
Dang bout to say they might already play this
I can help you out
I'm a dm and been playing for about a year.
Bet man I really appreciate it. I'm kind of anti social and I'm trying to break out of my comfort zone a bit.
Whoops my bad, thanks for the correction!
Best place to start
Yea
The closest city is too dangerous to go to. It makes me sad
Same here in Arkansas
Sometimes local libraries host tabletop programming. If not and you don't have a game store, then online is a good way to go.
@harsh fjord Thank you
there are many small dnd discords you can play and get to know people
Yeah, I'm in one RN and it's pretty cool
Why would I use say a whip or club that only does 1d4 slashing damage or 1d4 bludgeoning I know whip have reach and club is light but
Because it's what you have available and/or it's for character reasons. Not everyone plays to have the biggest number in every situation.
Your class might not have proficiency with better weapons, you might not be able to afford/find better weapons
You might really need the reach or a light weapon in that specific instance
You get to pick your starter weapon I assumed for the most part
You pick from a list of equipment associated with your class.
You could roll for gold as well, but even then, you do have limitations on what you can afford.
If you're using the new rules, you simply take the equivalent gold cost of the equipment specified.
Which you can then spend on equipment of your choice instead.
Us and the DM IRL uses 2014 rules
Then you'd only get a choice if the starting equipment in your class/background specifies you do.
A fighter, for example, gives you a limited choice:
(a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial weapons
You can choose any martial weapon, but you wouldn't be able to choose a simple weapon.
Ah I’m playing a Folk Hero Halfling Fighter so yeah I have a Rapier, a longbow and presumably studded leather and a shield I wasn’t there when the character was made though
do we know, when we get translations from phb2024?
I don’t believe specific dates have been announced yet
Can someone please explain how to play? All my friend told me is that what you can do is determined by dice.

Hi I’m trying to build my first character but I want him to specialize in poison. From what I’m seeing it says ranger doesn’t have a built in ability. Is it up to the DM to see if my character can just have poison arrows? I’m just overall confused on how poison works in dnd
The only real "poison" specialization in 5e is the poisoner feat
Otherwise you have to talk to your DM about buying/creating the other poison options
All the core rulebooks will be available next year in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The PHB will be released in March, the DMG in June, and the MM in September.
Probably more accurate to say that what you can do is determined by your character sheet, and the dice determine how successful those things are.
The demo here should hopefully give you a clearer idea of how things work:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
that sucks. i want to use it now, but buying it 2x is crazy
Poisoner feat . Can I just give that to my character build? I was testing out a build in dnd beyond
Typically you'd choose a feat when your class allows you to.
The earliest of which is at level 4.
If you play a variant human, you can get a feat at level 1
I haven't read the 2024 ruleset yet, good to know!
Essentially that particular feat now has a level 4+ requirement, which would prevent anyone from taking it through their species (even if the DM does allow the old variant human to be used).
Hi guys am new
Welcome!
D&D is a collaborative storytelling TTRPG, where you typically play as your own character in a game with a few other players + a DM who runs the game
I’d check the channel pins and #learn-to-play for more info
I know that but that's all?

But yeah, at the end of the day, it’s just you and your friends telling a story together.
Your choices, plus the game rules and the random role of the dice, help shape that story.

Wow
I don't have to concentration spam for the links 😭
honestly what if I was to go into it completely blind (probably wouldn't work out, I need atless the basics 😭)
It wouldn't work out unless you had a really good DM (basically the narrator and generally the person with the most control over the game) willing to guide you through it. Tbf you'll probably need that anyways, but learning the basics in advance will make their job much easier
where would I find a good DM?
well I'll be the DM and be completely clueless and everything will go wrong and fail
If you ever figure out an answer to that, let me know! Jk, there are plenty of places to look and UmeeZoomee posted a decent place to start
Do I just go in #find-a-game and say I'm a begineer looking for a DM?
idk 🫠 let me read on the channel rq
I dont think I even have any places to play D&D with so 🫠
what should I know before I like, do that

I really dont have the concentration spam to read any of that 😭 omg I hate myself
🫠 literally cant stay in What is D&D for more then five seconds before cllicking off
I probably wont want to do calls, is it fine to do just text?
Ok so I'm looking for a DM who will do everything for me, instant text responses and will cook my dinner tonight
-# a joke
PBP?
lol
what do I do need to know before I move onto anything else bc I legit cant concentrate on the links sent 🫠
Where could I find a DM that would do that?
should I first make a character or do that with the DM?
"5 Red Flags that your DM is toxic"
-# I like being silly so excuse some of my stupid stuff
You mean #looking-for-players , right? That's where DMs advertise to gather a party for play.
You can submit your own post in #looking-for-dm (following the instructions in #find-a-game), or you can respond to DMs' posts in #looking-for-players.
so I either do looking for dm to one to find me, or looking-for players to find a dm myself?
You'll probably have more success with the latter.
so find one myself?
Yeah. DMs are in high demand, so you'll have better luck by contacting them directly instead of waiting for one to contact you.
honestly I'll probably be better having one find me bc I dont understand any of the stuff 😭
any keywords I could search for?
"PBP" or "play by post" if you want a text-only game.
🫠
Yeah this isnt working out I'm just too overwhelmed, unknowledged and clueless to understand what to do 😭
by how much stuff I'm not processing 😭
Is thought there whas an item if you die your next char could keep the same level but you don´t take death save. Any one know the name of that item?
I don't know but I'm just having MASSIVE concetrating issues with it - I want to do this but I am basically rn unable to latch onto anything
I got the starter pack for dnd
A i saw some one have done that everytime he went down he whas insta death but could make a new char on the lvl he whas.
Ow 🙂 thanks
In many games, a secondary character will come in at the same level as the first character by default
lore or descript or whatever isnt really interesting me 🫠 oh god thats going to be a another issue, finding smth to interest me
Oh god 😭 Why am I like this
i honestly dont even damn know what I want
Why don't you start here, see what interests you?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
sorceror is interesting me rn bc mention of dragons :3
I uhh do like dragons (no I did not decide to look at this game bc it has dragons in the name)
Interesting
I'm honestly thinking of what I even want as a character - I'm tempted to take an OC I have and turn it into a D&D character but honestly I should really look through the classes and make something new off that
ok
Hey everyone, me and my friends are all new to DnD and since we’re all long distance friends I have to ask, what’s the best and most efficient way to play dnd online?
I like playing with a combination of Discord (with Avrae), D&D Beyond, and Owlbear Rodeo.
^^
Okay! I appreciate the recommendations. We tried just having our friend who never dmed before just be our dm and tell us stuff over voice chat but that got to be a bit hectic.
Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and Foundry are the other common Virtual TableTops (VTTs)
Any DMs in chat cuz I need some tips and some questions answered if possible
Is it possible to import characters I’ve made on beyond to roll20 or do I just have to make them up again?
If anyone’s a DM we are looking for one
I mean copy and paste is the only way really
I'm really in need of a party, I am a player but I haven't played in awhile
Hello everyone! i am super new what do i have to do to play i dont know anything
I mean you can join ours but it’s uh
Fully of new players and we don’t have a DM
hello everybody i'm new player of D&D, i am really happy to be able to play with a new party as a player
?tag new
No tag new found.
Alright, if u want u can dm me the link or what not
what does that mean?
I got the bot command wrong.
oh ok
The basic idea: join a Dungeon Master (DM) for a game of heroic fantasy adventure. As a player, you take the role of a character who may be a human, dwarf, elf or otherwise, with a class that determines your primary abilities and special features like a wizard's spellcasting or a bard's inspiration.
The DM narrates the scene, giving you a picture of the situation, and you choose how your character acts.
When there's some uncertainty about the success of a particular action you'll be asked to roll a d20 (a twenty sided die) and typically add one or more numbers to the result depending on your character's capabilities (like skill proficiency and your relevant ability score bonus).

Are you saying dnd is too hard?
Hello I’m new to this I’ve been writing some fiction of fantasy stuff and my friends recommended D&D so what are some tips?
Hello I'm new here and I'm just hoping to meet and talk to different ppl here dnd maybe find my own little party
A player hopefully! I haven't gotten to honestly play because of complications where I live
@stoic kestrel thank you so much!
Hello to all, I'm just wondering what website/game you guys use for DnD? (DnD Beyond, Roll20, etc)?
I'm (kinda) new to this
Should I bother buying a digital copy of tashas if i already have a hardback but want to be able to paly an artificer on my phone app. or will there be artificer notes in the upcoming books scheduled for november and feburary (which I've already pre purchased)
I do not have any books but I can look online if that's allowed
Tbh I'm pretty new to the game, the only DND matches I've ever played was with the tabletop club
Ah don't worry I've used DND beyond before (The tabletop club recommended it)
d20 doens't have artificer either! -.-;
The only question is: What class should I pick?
not artificer :[
Why???
bc its not there lol
I'm hoping i just need to wait, but I just now bought tasha on dndbeyond hoping it would unlock artificer and it hasn't yet :l
Well any class that you recommend?
depends on what you want to do with your character. I think the rule of thumb is play martial classes for your first time. I of course will promptly ignore that and play the most complex class there is
I'm a generalist by nature (I play too much random in Smash Bros) so anything works for me besides I'm currently working on some custom Dnd Classes (I'm already done with their gimmicks, wanna hear)
@regal bane hey uh you there?
do barbarian. thats the smashiest bro there is.
???
What do you mean by that?
@regal bane sorry if I DM you so much, your the first person that I know that will talk to me sometimes
What does that mean exactly?
that im not sure how to respond
Alright... What content do I deactivate
Grim hollow, Minecraft, etc
;-; @regal bane I'm starting to wonder what's taking you so long to respond
please don't use our channels to prompt people for DM conversations. They will respond when they have time or inclincation
bc im doing other things in other programs and I'm not sure what you mean by 'content to deactivate' I'm sorry but I don't think I'm the correct person to try to continue this conversation with. apologies. and good luck
Guess I'm popping in at a bad time lol
not a bad time at all.. the channel is open for multiple conversations, not tied to any one person 🙂
They’ve hinted at future plans for artificer, but it won’t be in the DMG or the MM.
I’d bet it’ll be at least a year before we see anything.
I bought tashas digitally and have started creating my artificer for my first adventure league game this sunday :]
thank you for after-the-fact validating my purchase lol
So, this is a place for newcomers. Well, I've finished reading the Players manual a few days ago and I created a character already. DND looks very complex but I like that, I hope I can have a lot of fun in the near future (I'm going to try to DM for a group of friends, we'll see how that goes xD)
Did you read the 2024 or 2014 edition of the Player Handbook?
I’m new to dnd I’ve only recently had my first session and I wanted to know if my backup character would be difficult to work with, I plan on making a ranger warlock but I’m not sure if I can evenly stat spread
is this valid talk for newcomers or more for character discussion?
as a newcomer who is 1000% of the mindset to minmax my character a la baldurs gate 3, I'm slowly coming to the realization that in DnD pure class high level seems to be MUCH stronger than multiclassing evenly between two or more classes.
my gloomstalker, battle master, assassin weeps.
with that being said, warlock ranger sounds like such a cool rp opportunity
would making her a gloomstalker, hexblade make up a bit for the weakened abilities by multiclassing
sounds like it? I'm not sure what anything's ability outside of bg3 is :] and even of that my knowledge is limited. If you stack dex you at least get both of those classes main martial stat lined up
and whatever hexblade has can't hurt what i know gloomstalker brings
I’m not really sure what it does either but I know you can turn invisible as a hexblade so that would probably be helpful
I could maybe pair it with rogue to get sneak attack
mechanically as I understand it, you'll get more dice worth of damage from a higher level cantrip/ability if you just keep leveling up one or the other instead of trying to get different instances of damage dice
also i think gloomstalker also has a way to use darkness to hide effectivly? idk
yeah they’re invisible to creatures with dark vision in darkness, so I might’ve misread the thing about hexblades
Does anybody have a group I can play in?

At base, a set of dice (physical or digital), a character sheet, and a group to play with
Online dice rollers exist, DDB has one yeah.
As a courtesy to your group I also recommend familiarizing yourself with the 2024 Free Rules as much as possible. Doing some of the legwork of learning the rules yourself helps massively ease the burden of teaching newbies
As for your DDB question I recommend it, it’s a very convenient tool that also can host a character sheet and do the math for you
Where do I get the free rules from
Check the channel pins or #learn-to-play , both have links to the Free Rules
Thx
I wanted to start a campaign with me friends but Ive never played DND before and we don't have a DM so I have to learn, and only one person knows how to play out of all 5 of us. So does anyone have any useful tips or any info I could use?
Does anyone know where to find good premade campaigns?
Hello, I am an intermediate player, but new DM. I picked up a copy of ‘Tyranny of Dragons’ for my players. I was wondering if anybody has any tips for how I can run this.
do you have to do anything special to cast something as a ritual if its an option or do you just wait for the extended time frame?
it just extends the casting time, and a spell with a casting time of 1 minute or longer requires concentration to cast.
And casting times go from the "within the turn" times, being 1 reaction, action, or bonus action, to 1 minute. There's not any spells with a casting time in between those times.
so basically if i cast identify as a ritual, and as long as i can concentrate for 11 minutes i dont use a spell slot?
yep. However, it does mean each time you want to cast identify either way, as 1 or 11 minutes, it occupies concentration, meaning you can't maintain concentration on another longer-term spell over it all
thanks!
Is there any free players? We got uh... 3 people rn. That includes me
We getting ready for one in near future
New players pref
As of right now I’m free when do y’all plan on playing
Somewhere on friday of 25th
I'll have time after 18:00 GMT+5
What's ur time zone?
can i join?
Eastern standard time
You might wanna take these to PM's or the lfg channels, as this is a channel for helping newcomers, not looking for games
Sure. Time is above
thank you
Oops. Yea, should've checked the channels beforehand
Though, it will be bilingual
thats okay, what languages if i may ask?
Eng/Rus
thats good thank you
I'll be translating between players/gm
alright cool thanks
Though, I do recommend having a Google translate open on the side, just to be sure
yeah thats what i was planning on doing
Hi new player here. Is dnd a storytelling game?
Like dm tells players what's happening then players decide what to do and then dm tells what happens next
Still a bit confused after reading the rules 😅
Pretty much, it’s a collaborative story telling game
DM will have a story they want to tell and the players choices mold it
If I subscribe to DND beyond does my partner need to subscribe or can she have a basic account
A better question for #ddb-support but here's the breakdown of what a DnDBeyond subscription provides:
- Hero Tier: One-week early access to books you preorder on DnDBeyond, unlimited characters, add publicly shared homebrew to your own collection, and monthly subscriber perks
- Master Tier: Two week early access to books you preorder on DnDBeyond, unlimited characters, unlimited encounters with the encounter builder, add publicly shared homebrew to your personal collection, monthly subscriber perks, use DnDBeyond's Maps tool, enable content sharing in a DnDBeyond campaign (up to 5 campaigns) - this is where folks purchased DnDBeyond material can be shared with everyone else in that campaign.

If i wanted to be a DM do you think i just play at least once or twice as a player first, ive never played D&D but ive never had anyone to play with
How did you deal with all of the work before the sessions
That's a fascinating question, with no clear answers. Having some player knowledge is useful as you can then anticipate some things your players will encounter difficulties with. However, if your group has no-one to DM because no-one has played before, someone has to step into the DM role.
it's hard the expires but if you have some ideas for a campaign go for it
What happens if your players derail your campaign?
yeah it seems more fun to play as a DM, im guessing youtube is gonna be the best place for me to learn
So if players try to do something you don't want you just distract then with an encounter?
i watch a ton and asked friend about DMing dnd and when i felt like i was ready i just did it
Ahh okay, but otherwise you would just let them continue, if you had something cool in mind for it?
So you want to keep them on the main story but also give them a little freedom to surprise you and loot something
Ill keep that in mind when I have the courage to DM
No, I've been trying to join a campaign but the registration process is complicated
I've been replying to people in the looking for players channel, but a lot of them start sessions at 5am in my TZ.
I joined a party that plays at a good time for me but I have to wait a week till I can even play with them
I've done some solo experimentation but I haven't done it with them
DM is already a bit way through the campaign with some LVL 5 players, and I asked what kind of character I should create plus what the campaign was based off of
So I'm competely new to DnD and it sounds RLLY fun but its so overwhelming where to start
yo new to dnd got my character created on dnd beyond but truthfully i do not understand what any of it means

Hey, guys
That's fair
I like the term "humanoids" very little people who can get offended by it
So if one rolls lower than another’s armor class it’s a miss?
And if it’s higher or equal it’s a hit but breaks the armor right?
I’m reading it over and over can’t grasp it in English ngl brain dead
It doesn't "break" the armor. The damage is rolled when you meet or exceed the Armor Class.
If it's less than the AC, you may still have descriptively hit the target, yet the armor absorbed the hit or they blocked it with a shield or ducked under the swing. No damage gets rolled in any case.
So it wouldn’t deduct from the ac even if it was a lower number
Ah, so it’s possible to still make contact but not do anything
Narratively, yes. You don't have to describe missing the AC by 1 as your weapon whiffing through the air. That's you hitting your target's armor in the most reinforced area, where your blow is fully absorbed. It's a "miss" but you still can describe it as a hit. A natural 1 is usually described as comically missing though.
basically a "hit" costs the affected creature something, a "miss" is something they arent bothered by
Wait
im mostly askign for fun but does anyone know how to make a backstory for your character? i never really made a character befor eand im blank on ideas, anything helps!!!
3 bullet point backstory:
- Where did your character come from in your game setting?
- What did your character do before you became an adventurer?
- Why did your character leave safety and become an adventurer?
It may help to discuss these ideas with your DM and group you're playing with.
Picking a background will help with this! If you're playing 2024 you can pick one of the backgrounds that matches your character class's main stats, then build from there
For example, if you're a fighter you could pick Farmer since it boosts strength. Then you can think about how your character went from being a humble farmer to learning fighting skills. Maybe you were drafted into the militia because of monster raids on your farming community!
Hey, I used one of the comments to search for a community but I can't find it anymore. Is there a way to search for it?
You can look for your username - but do note that LFG posts and their threads are deleted after 7 days.
Once an AC has been broken or rolled over for a creature do I need to subtract the AC or dose it affect the hit points only?
Man it really is limitless and up to the dm, right?
Let's keep things to official rules - this channel is for new to D&D folks to help them get started with core game rules and mechanics
Im new just asking questions about the rules I was confused about
I’ve read it like 10 times and still don’t get combat too well
Yeah no worries - just avoiding the "but maybe the armor breaks" discussion which is generally not a thing in D&D
There are some oozes and monsters that have effects on armor but generally armor does not break or get reduced
AC is used simply to determine whether or not the attack hits.
If it hits, you roll for damage, and that damage gets subtracted from their HP.
Hello , I want to do some dnd with a few friends but we are brand new to it and they want me to be dm and one of the player already don't want to conform lol I'd need advice on what I could let him do for his idea for a warlock , the rest of the group is basically halfling barbarian , elf ranger and orc druid
His idea is that he want his patron to be a magical teapot and spill tea on allies and enemies alike, I was thinking of maybe transforming his teapot idea into a teapot possessed by either a genie or a elemental of sort would that be a decent compromise and not literally make me struggle later on
Patrons typically don't interact directly in the game world on behalf of the warlock
It's more like the warlock has made a deal with the patron - they do the patron's bidding in exchange for magic power.
There's also the "unknowing/uncaring" patron who isn't even really aware they are gifting power to the warlock.
Yes I know but I am concerned about the magic power he would get from such a patron and how to integrate it in my story
I'd look at existing warlock patrons, find one that mechanically provides the features you and your player are looking for, then reflavor it to taste (reflavoring is describing things in a way that meets your needs but keeps the mechanics the same.)
Yeah that's what I was thinking to do by using rules I found for a genie or an elemental
Making it tea themed
Using a water wizard as his mini and making the water spell effect tea colored
Ooo alright!
i cant really find a farmer class have you gotten any ideas?
The Farmer background is available in the 2024 Players Handbook. If you don't have access to that you can use one of the four free backgrounds available in the 2024 basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
oh
yeah buildin a story off of that will be sort of hard, thanks though
/looking-for players
hello hows it going just joined 🙂
Good
if you are a player wanting a DM, you'd want /looking-for dm
the command you posted would mean you are a DM wanting players. If that is what you wanted, apologies.
if you just start typing the /look the commands should pop up and you can choose the one you want
dose this discord have any voice channels?
No it does not - we actually don't host games on this server.
do you know of a server that dose both?
so i've literally never played but my friends are trying to play together and I need to know anything you can give me tiktok isn't too helpful
Can check #looking-for-community for servers that offer D&D games with VC

Feel free to ask specific questions here as you run into them.
Hello! I really want to play DnD online through roll20 and I have an account with them, but I don't know what to do to get set up. I use an external monitor for my PC and I don't know if I need an external camera or not. Also, I really don't want to buy all of the online books if I don't need to. I need some help if someone is available. Thank you.
Roll20 has the free basic rules - that's really all you need to start playing.
You can check with #third-party and see if folks there have any suggestions on using Roll20
Thank you I appreciate it.
if im going to try and play D&D (online) what should I get?
I need to read the rules and stuff which I'll do tmr
so im creating my first character on dndbeyond. is there any "partnered content" i should be unchecking or simply keep the defaults for simplicity? i only ask because it says content is at dm's discretion
Has anyone got a moment to smooth out a bit of confusion I am having regarding class proficiency with saving rolls?
sure, just ask here
talk to your DM, I wouldnt assume partnered content being allowed by default.
ok i just dont have one yet. im the noobiest dnd noob ever rn 😅 making first character ever
then try to stick to the official first party stuff for now
making characters without a DM is good practice, just dont expect to be able to use them (exactly as they are anyway) at an actual table
ok, example scenario:
Level 8 ranger, gets a +3 proficiency bonus.
also rolls Str and Dex saves with proficiency.
Lets say I want to do a Str save, and lets say that Ive got STR 15 with a +2 modifier.
would rolling as Str save with proficiency be adding the +3 prof. bonus and the +2 modifier, giving a +5 bonus on the saving roll?
yes
ok thank you
Awww so my super ultra op character won't be usable? 😔
and if i didnt have proficiency on a specific stats save roll, like... say I also had a 15 in charisma, I would roll the save with the flat +2 modifier, correct?
I wouldnt count on it 😉
yes
final question
Lol
In the instance of a multi class character, 3 levels in Ranger and 5 in Bard. Together that would be proficiency saves on 3 Stats, str, dex and stam, but thats not how it works right? You only keep the proficiency rolls on..... the first class??? is that it?
you only get the saving throw proficiencies of the class you chose at level 1
many thanks
same goes for skill checks, yes?
similar scenario, Lvl 8 ranger, 16 dex with a +3 modifier
has taken the Stealth skill, so you would take the +3 prof bonus for a lvl 8 character and add the +3 modifier for a +6 to the skill check, yes??
yep
if you are proficient in something, you add your Proficiency bonus to your stat modifier
thank you for your simple wording and complete sentences.
Hello everybody, I'm new to this server, how is everybody doing? :D
doin alright hru?
Pretty good!
Good! i think ive finished making my first character ever. is it normal for someone to ask for critiques? not sure of dnd etiquette...if any 😅 i just want to do this correctly so i can play eventually
me to I'm still learning the game but its hard finding people to play with as most other i know dont play
Oh no it's okay, I don't know how to make a character myself im new 💀💀
don't try to anatagonize the dm and you should be fine
dnd is a collabrative game and the dm shouldn't be your enemy
ive wanted to for years but the couple irl's i knew didnt wanna teach someone from scratch. i ask a lot of questionshaha
I'm aware of the main etiquette and stuff, just the more advanced rules and character making is what i struggle with
im lucky and my brother in law wanted to lern and so did i so his brother ran a few games for us
nice
is there anything in particular you're stuck on?
Just making characters and specific rules you use for a race and class
if you use dnd beyond that dose alot for you
which i probably learn from playing a game and told from the DM of a game
you should probably start by thinking about what you want that character to be and then building it mechanically
like a wizard gunslinger or a necromancer doctor
a idea to start with
YOU CAN MAKE A WIZARD GUNSLINGER?!?!
HELL YEAH IMMA PRE-BUILD A CHARACTER RIGHT NOW!
you can flavor your spells as different parts of an arsenal
I think I'm gonna ascend to another dimension
if you want to play a spell caster gunslinger, i would pick sorcerer or light cleric
alright, thanks
they have high damage outputs and are blaster casters
I've been wanting to make like a skeleton who's a gunslinger-sorcerer type adventurer
you could play the disembody
reborn is also an option
how do you add the gunslinger thing to the Sorcerer thing??
Hi, I just joined this server, how's it going?
you can make your spell casting focus a gun
see ya
have fun
Then again, your dm might not allow guns, since not all would. Personally though, any dm that would is awesome.
Hi!
I'm looking for a community to play with. Anyone with a free spot?
Dose that mean the initiative roll would go against the ac or is that just determining the order of combat
Any games between Tuesday and Thursdays each week?
Also on a creature’s appendix what would it mean if it said
Hit Points: 22 (2d9)
Im new to DND how can I find game's
#find-a-game explains a lot too
How do you find local/in person games?
Thank you
Tell me if I’m wrong but from what I understand 1. Everyone rolls for initiative, 2. The character who is taking the turn rolls a d20, and if the d20 exceeds the AC you then 3. Roll damage dice associated with weapons
Hello, quite new in this server. I looking for DND groups. Where can I find free spots?
That's a very rough generalization. The d20 in step 2 has modifiers that can be added rather than just a straight d20.
What you are missing is the interaction between DM and players for each step. You roll for initiative when the DM determines that combat is about to begin. The player describes their action in step 2 and the DM tells them to roll their attack; with advantage, normally or at disadvantage as the DM determines by the rules. The player tells the DM the result and is informed whether to roll for damage or if the attack missed.
Hello, I created a character for adventure league. I've been having trouble looking for DND groups. Where can I find free spots?
#1050206572535623690 tends to be more specifically AL games
ty
AC is used only to determine whether an attack hits.
Rolling a Dexterity check for initiative only determines turn order.
Neither of those have any effect on the other.
I apologize about the questions lads, I really appreciate the help and do try and reread and watch videos before asking
I’m starting my first dnd game with no experience nor anything with some other people and my hope is to join a game happening nearby when I understand. Thanks again lads.
fairly new to dnd, but i assume that you say the action you are going to make then roll with 20 being great success and 1 being ultimate fail. am i correct in anyway?
I’m hoping to do the same thing! I know basically nothing about DnD but it sounds like something I’d be into! Good luck!
Necromancer doctor sounds fantastic though….
Budget Ressurrections
People can't pay for 300 gp diamonds you know
cleric services can be expensive too
Is it normal to sit in on a DnD party to see what it’s about irl?
seems normal to me
I just googled and said I should stop by GameStop to ask around if there’s a good irl. That seems weird? Would that be weird?
Snort
Smort*
There’s tons of games streaming on Twitch and YouTube that you can check out.
That’s roughly the idea, yeah. This demo does a good job of introducing the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
so idk anyone irl that wants to play dnd and with online like roll20 it seems you just kinda jump in, but is there ways to just chat with the ppl and see their vibes to see if you wanna play with them yk
Woah
woah
Hello
hello
I don't know anything about d&d
spreading false info is not a great thing
but yk the basics its a tabletop rpg and you can make ur own characters and adventures
Woah
use your imagination and creativity to make the best of it

but like im new i never done a campaign before
Hallo
hello
Hi
Hi guys
I think I’ve finally figured out some way of combat and it only took a few days
Ez pz
I am sorry but I am new where should I get started first
Yeah I’m new as well
find a campaign and make a character idea for it
you can go to the bottom to the find-a-game section
Thank you
What's a campaign?
basically it's an ongoing dnd game that runs for multiple sessions
Where can I find one my man?
all the way at the bottom of the channels list is the find a game section
you can also go to other dnd servers or tabletop websites
Looking for player or looking for dm?
looking for player section is the one i'd recommend
I have a question about lineage and content on Beyond, not sure if this is the right chat
go ahead
Wait
Ravenloft has the reborn and I have that purchased, does that become a race on beyond?
Isn't looking for players making me look for other plays ?
I wanna be player myself don't i?
no, it's GMs looking for players to play their campaigns
So i should look for dm ?
no go into the looking for players
the posts are from dungeon masters looking for players
sounds like you want #find-a-game
Ohh got it
Does proficiency get added to damage rolls or just your ability modifier?
just the ability modifier
So I'm new to this and I'm hoping to join couple friends for my first d and d session and hoping for someone here can help me to understand the game and other stuff about it
I dont really understand how to use to this discord but im looking for a group to join
Same
Cool me lol
go all the way down to the bottom of the channel list
you can find games open down there
I see find a game but it tells me to check channels i dont see
i only see find a game
or cant post to
I have to stop lurking long enough to say: It's hillarious watching this discussion, and thinking back to when I started... when we spent most of our time trying to convince people we weren't worshiping devils and murdering cats...
you can just click on the channel names in the find-a-game section
Yep! Look for it under “Lineages”.
Or just use the search option at the top when you’re choosing your species.
Hello
Howdy
D&D is a collaberative storytelling game that groups of 2 or more play. The main purpose behind the game is to have fun.
As should any game
One person gets designated to be the Dungeon Master (DM) who basically serves as a referee between what the other players want to do, and the rules of the game.
The other players then make Player Character (PCs), who occupy the world and are the point of view of the story.
Generally, the gameplay goes as follows:
The DM described a location or event or setting
The Players tell the DM what they would like to do in light of the DM's description.
The DM then determines whether or not the PCs succeed, sometimes you might need to roll a 20-sided die to determine how likely they are to succeed.
As for the actual rules of the game, there's a lot, but you won't need all of them all the time. There is a free document called the Basic Rules that gives you literally everything you need to play or run D&D. There is another thing you can find called the D&D Free Rules which recently came out and has some better information for how you actually play.
Yup!
Personally I use Discord to talk to my players and a website called Roll20 that functions the same as a tabletop but simulated virtually.
Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) are pretty common now, hell, DnDBeyond has two of them.
Sounds cool
One thing I was wondering is how long a game can take
To my understanding it could quite literally go on for years if you really wanted it to
The shortest game I have ever been in lasted 1 afternoon, only about 4 hours, the longest running game I'm still in has been happening for ~8 years
Sounds lowk cool
we meet very infrequently, as life has taken hold of us, but still we find time.
Glad that you five ways to
Another question. Is there a way like a valid website to check what all these classes do?
Yeah, so there's a website called DnDBeyond which should have both the Basic Rules and the Free Rules under the Sources tab.
Oo question u can do dnd in text right (i only experienced it in vc so)
Most Virtual Tabletops feature the official books, you have to buy them though.
Yes! I recently did a D&D game between just me and my boyfriend via Discord, we would drop in and out whenever we had time to send a message. Went by a little slowly, but also it felt a lot more like writing a book with my partner.
Alright I’ll check that out. I know some like Wizard, but it’s confusing to me what defines like a warlock, sorcerer and a wizard apart from each-other
I seeeee that sounds fun!
Im planning to get into dnd more and try to learn on it as a dungeon master
In dnd with the genre im wonderin if u can do dnd in a setting of the cyberpunk or modern life right now
There's cyberpunk system I think but idk if it's related to dnd
I gotchu then.
In D&D, those three classes are heavily defined by how they acquired their magic.
In D&D, Sorcerers are born with their magic or they develop it naturally, like X-Men or Harry Potter.
Warlocks acquired their magic via some type of bargain or deal, where a very powerful being (but not quite a god!) granted magic to the Warlock. Think of Faustian bargains.
A Wizard acquires their magic through rigorous study and experimentation. Think of Doctor Strange or Einstein or something.
You definitely can but it definitely is not where D&D shines.
I see i see
Dang you know your stuff
Frl
Teach me ur ways frl
Become my tchr KAHAHHA
I would hope so, I've been playing this stinkin game for like 9 years
Oh wowww
On this note: There are other games like D&D (Tabletop Roleplaying Games (TTRPGs)) in these genres that play much smoother. I am quite fond of Cyberpunk: Red if you want a Cyberpunk game, or d20 Modern if you want a game set now.
Dang so that one game you’ve been playing is almost your entire D&D career
Ohhhh i see
Become my tchr 🙏 frl
It would be so awesome if u make stories out of it tho just sayin
@marble sluice
So I am wondering is there a way to find a good group. I do see there is a channel for it (find a game) but idk I’d rather just have one or a select few groups I’d play with, rather than bounce around a lot. I like familiarity
Hi im new to dnd and looking for a group to join
I feel the same way buddy
Yeah my brother and I got into D&D and he elected to be our DM and started running a game. It didn't start out good or anything, we were all young and very inexperienced and playing D&D like a bunch of kids would. We all enjoyed it though and kept playing and eventually we matured over time and foind out that plot and story are cool too.
HELL YEAHHH CONSIDER MAKIN STORY OUT OF IT
WHOO KNOWS IT MAY BLOW UP FRL
Sounds like one hell of a brother
I would love to but I have a comically terrible memory. I basically have the sparknotes down.
Like I don't remember out first two levels of play at all and we played through 7 levels using XP to level up instead of it being at story-based moments.
I see
Aye @marble sluice if u host a game ill gladly join it 🙏
I would look for games either here, using the #find-a-game channel or I would look online elsewhere. I just recently got a bunch of players via the subreddit r/lfg (looking for game) which is specifically for TTRPGs.
Thank you
Chances are I'll probably be unable to hold you to this. I just started a campaign and have all the players I need. I'll keep you posted tho.
Alright I’ll make sure to keep this in mind, I’ll likely take note of it since I have a memory similar to yours
Alright then
Good luck mann
For y'all new peeps, if someone is advertising a game titled "Tomb of Horrors" you're gonna want to say no to that game.
Why’s that
Now im intrigued
That's like all the advice I have for picking an adventure to try to join. Look to see if it has an interesting name/description and ask to join it.
Some communities take it seriously to another level
So bad
Its a really old adventure that was explicitely designed to kill player characters of any level regardless of magic items or spells or whatever. Lots of instant death traps, lots of item removal traps, a distinct lack of fun.
Oh my
And for whatever reason its like D&D's favorite adventure ever so it has been ported to every edition of the game since its inception.
Probably because they never knew who would die or smth
@frigid fjord yo jerry if u find some group take me w u. I know we just meet but either way thats the fun part KAHAHAH
I don’t see any reason to object to that
Hell yeahh
If I can fit the time in tomorrow I’m gonna put a decent amount of effort into looking for a group and researching the stuff Gwyn mentioned
Ohhh wait question do u hop on vc
Yeah I don’t mind
If you want to research stuff I said, Youtube is a beautiful space for it.
Not atm tho
I actually found that out for myself earlier today when I checked YouTube out for some beginner tips
Ohhh i actually have my own group of dnd perhaps you’ll take interest of joinin
There's a wonderful series by the youtuber Critical Role, the series is called Handbooker Helper, they go over a bunch of D&D concepts in real short, easy-to-digest videos.
Beautiful series name
Maybe, I’ll probably get back to you on that tomorrow
Combining "Player's Handbook" and "Hamburger Helper"
Got it feel free to dm me im free whenever
And they are famous for nothing else besides Handbooker Helper (they also run the most famous Twitch livestreamed D&D show)
Can’t say the same here 😅
Hamburger helper i never heard of that
I also recommend the channel XP to Level 3, which recently posted a longform video of their group playing the Tomb of Horrors. Imo it gets you the full experience w/o any of the pain
Order some and make it
Is food that is edible and yummy
Thats alright lmaoo
I hope to find a group and play been wanting to get into dnd for a bit
OooOooh yeah that i thought its some book or somethin LMAOO
No 😂
OooOoh well i have my own dnd we do it on vc tho
What’s the twitch channel?
Thats fine with me
I can vc
Critical Role
For this server check #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with!
OHH HELL YEAH ADD ME RN
If you remember that Twitch income leak a while back, they were the name at the top of the list.
ACTUALLY ILL ADD YA @devout basin
How many players do you have
I thought I recognized that name from somewhere
Yeah I remember that
4 to be exact but if it includes me its 5
Hey Gwyn mind if I add you in case I have any more questions?
Yeah no prob
Fun
I can't promise I'll be able to reply 24/7 but I will try to answer your questions satisfyingly.
Well you have proven to be able to do that thus far
And don’t worry about replying fast I understand trust me lmao
I will also try my hardest to be succinct. I like D&D and like talking about it and will ramble.
I sent you a dm so not to flood this channel about the campign
You’ll likely catch me rambling as well, don’t worry about it the most likely outcome of your rambling will just be me getting more curious
I just Wana play a big burly lion barbarian :p
There is a D&D race designed with you in mind then. The Leonin race from the D&D book Mythic Odysseys of Theros is exactly that.
In case your game isn’t set in Theros and/or your DM wants to limit setting-specific races you could see about asking them to play a reflavored Tabaxi or Goliath
Shifter can work too
How exactly do we find campaigns?
I don't have a dm
hello ive been instrested in d&d for a couple months but idk anything about it
all i know is that funny crap happens and theres a dice with 20 sides
check out #learn-to-play if you want to know more
Cursory understanding of dnd here, not really looking to play yet, but wanted to watch some to see more dnd in action.
Was curious about critical role and vox machina. Is there a campaign that is generally accepted as the best one to watch first, or do I just pick one and dive in?
Basically YTs recommendations have my interest piqued but Idk where to start.
kk ty
Dont currently have time in my schedule to play, but I love a good story and that’s what I’m seeing in dnd.
Ngl, I wanna play as a necromancer that uses Speak with dead like it's facetime.
"Hold on guys, I need to call my mom"
Pulls out his mom's skull and uses speak with dead
"Yes Mom, I'm doing finnneee. Yes, I'm eating well. I mean- I was like 2 weeks late but at least I still called, yes yes. I didn't forget to wash my underwear. How's uncle jessi? Haven't seen his body ever since he got mulled by that lion-bear-elephant, oh! That's great."
Then just puts the skull away
Dungeon dudes has a good campaign that isn’t over produced and feels more like a home game
I’ll check it out, thanks!
why is a number added to the number u roll and how do u find that number?
Hello, I have been wanting to get into dnd for a while and I finally bought my own players handbook now I’m at the research stage
Where do I start if I want to play DND? I have nothing as of right now, not a group to play with, a character to play or knowledge of any rules. What's a good place for me to start?
for the thing in the dnd help adventure i survied with 9/9 hp
You might roll a d20 for various things such as attacking, saving against an effect, or performing a skill. Bonuses may apply based on your character’s statistics, if you’re proficient in the roll you’re trying to make, or if you have a feature/item that gives an additional bonus. See this section of the Free Rules for more info:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#D20Tests
Ideally you should read the whole thing, but for a focused answer to your question I also recommend checking out the Proficiency & Combat sections for more supplementary info
is that good for my frist time
ohhhh
i get it
The Demo is moreso meant to give an idea of what D&D can be like, not necessarily a challenge to overcome 😅 . That being said good job on coming out unscathed
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. While it can be nice to find a DM that is willing to teach newbies, it’s most helpful if you can meet them halfway or further to ease their burden.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games.
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Thank you!
Hey, anyone here host any campaigns ? I've never played, but have always been interested
hello silly fellows
Hello guys!! 👋 , I am COMPLETELY new to D&D, I wanted to get into it as I saw many reels of people making their own maps, I am currently in the midst of making a character and I would like to know if D&D can be played completely online.
hello
To use this server to find a group to play with, check #find-a-game
D&D can absolutely be played online! There’s a variety of tools to help, but I’d consider the following to be the recommended requirements needed to set up an online game:
- A digital character sheet hoster like D&DBeyond or roll20
- A virtual Tabletop (VTT) like roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo
- A digital dice roller (commonly integrated into the two items above)
- A communications platform like Discord
Thanks for the provided information! I am confident now that I can play online, what device do you recommend for playing tho?
PC is definitely the easiest. Mobile is possible but not ideal,
since a lot of VTTs have poor mobile functionality in my experience
I'll keep that in mind
hi im 100% new to dnd, what is it, like ive seen dnd campeigns online and found it interesting
it's my favorite hobby, have you read the players handbook or watched any youtube content on how to play?
the what is it, it's a role playing game simply put.
no
i no liek reading
well, won't lie this is a game that typically requires reading to understand the rules
Reading at least a few chapters of a 300 page book
but when it comes to read the entrety of harry potter
no
but by reading i mean excessive reading
You can get buy just reading your character stuff and the general rules
But d&d involves reading by default
is there a way to learn in action like start a campaign to learn
I’d recommend giving this demo a try to start:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
yeah, you don't have to read the whole book though it is suggested, the basic rules and reading about races and classes is needed
You can learn some by playing. But you can't expect the other players to tell you what the rules are all the time (unless they signed on for that in advance)
That’s certainly possible if you’ve got people willing to teach you that way.
But unless you’ve already got a group lined up, learning what you can on your own will increase your odds of getting accepted into a group.
fallout "abilities"??
Given the choice of a player who's put the work in but may still need a bit of help and a player who expects me to walk them through everything, I'll freely admit I'd choose the former
dexterity strength constitution intelegence wisdom and charism
fallout is where i knwo that set from
¯_(ツ)_/¯
D&D was first, but yes
I have some players that came to DnD through playing BG3, though they did take the time to read the basic rules also... playing BG3 or Solasta can help though they do have "homebrew" rules other than the tabletop
homebrew=nintendo console modding software) in my mind lol, im assuming homebrew means house rules
correct
Homebrew means anything not official, from rules to classes to everything in between
might want to make a D&D Beyond free account, you can read the free basic rules there

What advice/ suggestions would you give someone who has never played before and is going to join a group of experienced players on a new campaign?
if I've never played D&D before and want to play, what should I get/do before I play?
wheres the best place to look for noob freindly campaigns?
wdym by a test game?
like a one time dnd session?
First of all just remember that having fun is the goal, if you don't have fun at first then try again, if it still doesn't work maybe dnd isn't your thing.
Second of all I know how to play dnd because I read the rulebooks, they are the books that explain the rules so that makes sense.
Finally, if you want to be the Dungeon Master down the line, make sure you let yourself the rules or what's "canon" in the setting you use if it helps you tell the story you want to tell.
That would be my advice to you.
Wish you luck! 😄
yes one short game
hmmm, i mean i could try but I'm not great at dming
i wouldn't provide a good first taste of dnd
maybe another time lol
lol ok cool
could i dm u tho, for if i change my mind
yes sure

does anyone have a resource for finding in-person games?
I tried tabletop wizard but there isn’t much on there for my area.
You could try looking at local Meetups or store websites
There are more stores that have games than actually show up in the WotC locator
Wotc?
Oooh my b
No worries
Hello , i really want to play dnd but i have no idea where to start ,what should i know , where to find people from , any suggestions?

so i have characters made and know the important stuff, but where can i find some people to play it with?
#find-a-game is a good place to start
thanks, ive tried looking through it already and i don't know if i should make a looking for player or looking for dm, cause i need both.
Why not join one of the games in the looking for players?
Usually they are searching for multiple players for a group
There are plenty other places too. Like reddit/lfg, Facebook groups, roll20 forums, etc
i might try. thanks for helping.
I’ll mention Warhorn because you can usually find tables for ”today” and ”tomorrow” too!
So I haven't played the game yet so I just sometimes make random characters in beyond. I went on to make a half orc but saw the new reworks. Can it be fine to make a half orc while using the new classes
Yep!
Heya guys, I'm brand new to dnd, could anyone drop some quick tips on the game to give a slight boost?
Here:
#dnd-newcomers message
Hi all me and my wife are looking for a group to play D&D with we are both new however we have been playing BG3 so have some understanding (I have also been watching some YouTube games)
Anyone want to take us in and help us learn and play 😎
Check out #find-a-game
Rules can be a bit confusing but just reread them and click around. You can make a post in there looking for a game or trying to plan one.
I’d recommend keeping tabs and talking about lore and such in DND Discussions, sometimes it’s easier to start talking about lore and I find the conversations interesting
Personally I recommend checking this out. The Handbooker Helper mini series on YouTube also offers a lot of easy to digest information.
hello, im kinda new to dnd and I want to try being a dm, is there any campaign you would recommend ? Im also playing with newcomers
yo, anyone willing to help me learn basicly everything about d&d, ive pretty much havnt played it and know little to nothing about it, ive been wanting to get into playing but find it to difficult as most sites just force everything at me at once and i get lost and confused
Sure I will
I was 120 seconds late
Lost Mines of Phandelver is the usual “go to” for newcomers, both GMs and Players. Doing some research on that can help you a lot, too.
Have you checked out #learn-to-play yet?
Anything other than this one ?
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is also a very starter friendly one
i have no idea what your talking about
A one-shot is a very short adventure that is started and finished on the same day. They usually take around two to four hours.
maybe later, im tired as heck rn and needa nap, but feel free to dm or friend me if you want
Remember to use #find-a-game to solicit games, using other channels is unfortunately against the rules!
Ok,I understand, and I'll refrain from doing so going forward. Im sorry
Hi, im new here and mostly fresh to DND, ive create Hexblade warlock, and wondering if my stats on lvl 4 will be good:
S: 8, D: 15. Con: 15: Int:8: Wis:8, Char: 20
Seems fine, how did you generate your stats?
I would personally recommend dropping dex and/or con to 14 so you can get wisdom to 10+. Wisdom saves often avoid some of the most punishing effects in the game
It's a bit on the extreme minmax side. Also, you can't add all the extra stat bonuses to the same stat so something doesn't seem quite right
I also assume you took an ASI to get CHA to 20 at level 4?
anyone down to play a quick game?
yep
1 off?
Check #find-a-game
I did
Even if you'd done 8/8/8/15/15/15 I'd usually expect to see at least 1 16.
Unless you went custom lineage?
i;ve got Asi from lvl4 and as Shadar Kai
You’ll have to keep looking then, unfortunately soliciting games outside of the appropriate channels is against the server rules
What did you add the shadar kai bonuses to?
didn't know lol mb
It had to be different stats, so you shouldn't be able to have a 20 at level 4
I;ve use DNDbeyond and on page with Abilities i can chose 2 abiliti to add +2 and +1
so it's kind of bug?
Ah I see the issue. That’s a common D&DBeyond oversight. You’re not supposed to be able to add the bonuses to the same stat even though the app lets you
OK! so where do you recomend to put those stats?
Probably want to toss the +1 on one of the 15s
I would suggest a 8/14/15/8/10/15 from Point Buy, with the extra bonuses of +1 going to Constitution and the +2 going to Charisma
thx a lot 😄
and one more question about Invocation: What are good for melee hex blade?
i've chose Improved Pact Weapon and Agonizong blast
hey I am a newbie to the dnd game and community I wanted to make a campaign with some of my friends but its the first time for all of us so I decided to be the dm, so I am here looking for a beginner friendly one shot/short campaign to try things out as a player and to get an idea of how things work aside from videos an the handbook etc before starting a campaign with my friends.
thatnks in advance!
Peril in Pinebrook might fit your needs:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
I was looking for a oneshot campaign to play with other people online before I actually play with my friends so I could get the hang of it as a player before starting as a DM
I realized I was in the wrong channel, so I moved it to #dm-discussion
But I’ve heard a bit about that one! I’ve talked to some of my players about my concerns with handling how many participants I’ll have - thankfully they’re all incredibly patient and willing to help out. I have a feeling two of my players will not be regular participants, but we’ll see when we get to that point,
how play dnd?

is that good?
No idea what you mean by “janky”. Leveling up works effectively the same as it has for the last ten years.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
Let's be honest, we'll see 5.5e or 7e in a few years. When they redo the system like this, there's always kinks. Like I get not being racist, but dwarves for instance are supposed to be hardy and not charismatic. If you want a "sickly" dwarf wizard - make Cha, dex, str, and con your dump stats. It's always been easy to make the character you want, and I feel like the changes are more players not knowing the rulebook/not being imaginative with what they can do to make their character work. I also assume, that part of it is either not wanting to hammer out an agreement with your DM, or the DM being stubborn about it - which makes it not WotC's problem to start with
Tasha's and Xanathar's have optional rolls you can make to help flesh out your backstory and give you ideas. I also created a full d1000 race generator table (distributed instead of clumped together) that's based entirely on the demographics of the Sword Coast where I can now just roll to get a random race. Now that may be more work than you want, but the reincarnate table will work just as well, and if you want different races you can sub out the ones listed on the spell
I always just use the randomized name suggestions there. 😅

Is it possible to create a from scratch campaign even though I havent ever played the game... I wanna make a campaign for some friends who also havent played. But I want the campaign to be designed from scratch by me.
It's possible. Harder, but possible.
thank you jeff, can I run the idea by you to see if it is a possible theme for a campaign?
No need. If you & your players would like it, it works.
I hope I just dont want to spend weeks world building, learning the game, planning, etc to find out my idea isnt achievable
why wouldn't it be achievable? What are you worried about?
as a tip, build the world out as your players play. It's tough writing tons of material for stuff that will never be seen
unless you have grander plans than just a D&D campaign
I would advise you to start smaller
maybe a one shot and you build only a single local town and its surroundings
World building does not need to start with anything more than one town, one "dungeon" (adventure hook/place for stuff to happen), and a few named NPCs.
and then if your game continues, you can gradually expand the world
Yup. Be hard to find the essay part now, but the Dungeon Master's Guide for the 4th edition of the game, from about 20 years ago, had a great set of advice on building out a world.
Take notes and draw maps as you go. They will come in handy later, I promise. Especially if your players move out of the starter town or if you expand the town to keep them interested - they'll want to go back to places they've been and meet some of the NPCs again
It'll also help you out, so you don't have to constantly recreate the town or NPCs and you can reuse the same NPCs to give them quest info and clues and stuff
I have an idea of an amnesia based mystery with twists. I have very little knowledge of the game, I guess I dont want to find out It was for not due to my ignorance. I suppose I shall just create a centralized plot leaving it open to change and only really prepare the world building for the first 2 sessions?
Im worried about my missing something when creating the story. As far as I know I am making a game. So if thats the case missing pivotal parts. Is there maybe a few things I must know or must have?
if you have a very specific plot in mind, I guarantee that your players will be off the rails quickly.
I have considered that the players wont follow my story. the setting is set with a mystery but I have it open enough for them to make any choices they want
They start not remembering who or where they are. The kingdom is corrupt, there is quests in the kingdom which reveals hints as to this corruption. Although the kingdom quests further the corrupt goals of the king. They can choose however they want to address this fact. they could solve it or unknowingly fufilling the goals of the king. But the characters backstroies could change the story.
I dont want it to be too limiting
is this too limiting?
if you have questions that aren't specific to the rules and procedures of D&D, you might want to try #dm-world-building as well, but otherwise that doesn't sound like a bad start
Thank you MattyWhens. Could I ask the favor of being able to Dm you with questions in the future?
I'm not really great with DMs. For now I think if you have more questions, #dm-world-building and #dm-discussion might be better so other people can help you if I'm not available. I don't think it's going to bother anyone, that's what they're there for
No worries, thank you. You have been very helpful
I need ideas I love spell casters and have played a bard im thinking warlock but what are some good patrien suggestions
What kind of patrons are you interested in? Good, bad, weird?
Good or weird
Well, great old ones are probably the quintessential weird patron
I was looking at The Fathomless
That would work too
hello how is everyone doing
Hey i was wondering do any of you guys know how to actually conceptialize a character? Beacuse just got a first campaign had few sessions and i don't even have my character's backstory completed yet...I always throught im gonna be the type that has 20+ pages for character lore but my mind is absolutely blank. I have some ideas and concepts but not an actual proper background lore yet. I also realized i have tendency to create "doesn't trust anybody beacuse x a betrayed/had a rough childhood archtype" (i played bg3 before getting into actual dnd) and how can i fix that.
Eh! Im looking to get back into DnD now that ive retired and have time. I really havent played much since 1E, few online like BG3, couple live groups that never got traction, but now i want i solid group. I assume this isnt the forum for me, and i dont want to interfere with the uninitiated, but i dont really know where is best. Reddit seems like a bag of cats, StartPlaying is very money oriented, and DnDBeyond felt kinda elietist. May be just me. Regardless, if someone can point in the right direction, or punt me over there, if thats still a thing. Peace!
I usually try to hit the main points: where did I come from, why am I adventuring, what do I want? It can just be bullet points rather than written out
Yup. Like tosk, I advocate the Babylon 5 version: Who are you? What do you want? Where are you going? Why NOW?
It's also good to remember that d&d is a cooperative game, so it's important to figure out why you'd work with other people
i used this website called dnd beyond it helps you make a backstory and its really easy
D&D Beyond helps with backstories?
I already have my character sheet at dnd beyond i just haven't thought of if the spesifics
Hey I'm looking to host a one shot tonight
5e system
Start level 3
First time hosting as a DM
yea when i made my character but mind u im completely new to dnd never played or know a lot about it
I didn't think it did anything for backstory beyond having you pick a background (though that can help)
Looking to start in hour and a half but I'm very flexible with the timings
ohhh ok sorry cant help u 🙏
But I also don't use DDB for anything but looking up information
#looking-for-players i think u go here
it asks like what do u like what do u hate what do u want to achieve why do u want to go on an adventure stuff like that
If you want to play older editions, you could see if people in #dnd-elder-editions have any suggestions. Otherwise, #looking-for-players is indeed the place on this server
My humble thanks, My Queen!
Or local game stores if you don't want to play online
Yo I'm new to dnd and I don't know where to start
Does any one have any tips on how to play alone
D&D isn't really designed for solo play. Maybe one of the d&d video games?
Thank you guys i'll start with something
the issue i have with online seems to be the same with everyone, too many A-Holes. Id happily do online with randos, if i could fettet out the bad one from the good before game time. But again, thanks, ill hope over to lfg
Or a choose your own adventure type
yw glad i could kinda help
ferret*
Get a rolling chair. It'll make it easier to slide around the table pretending to be other people. Unless you have a lot of confidence in your quads- a few hours of sitting up and down will get to you eventually /s
You might have that problem in person too tbh. There's a reason finding a group often takes awhile
I recommend starting with something low commitment, like one shots until you find people you mesh with well
Yh it won't let me advertise on the #new players forum
Just keeps redirectimg me here
You have to use the commands to post in the looking channels
#find-a-game has instructions
You could try a game at the DnD Virtual Weekend in november, each game costs but it is a good team of DMs.
Or see if any other events are advertised here

Welcome! Were you looking for any specific kind of advice?
(You can change your roles in id:customize if you like.)
I'm brand new to D&D, but I just wanted to know if I buy the player's handbook in D&D Beyond can I use that same handbook in Roll20, or do I have to buy the players handbook in Roll20?
I mean you can use the information inside the book anywhere but the DnDBeyond book is specifically usable only inside DnDBeyond's tools
Do most players purchase anything from Roll20 to start playing online?
Depends on what platform/tools the groups decides to use
It depends on which platform your DM uses! For example, your DM might use Foundry or Owlbear Rodeo. If they do, having purchases on Roll 20 might not help you as much.
Which site should I make purchases from as a new player?
Whatever platform floats your boat - just note buying on Roll20 does not unlock it on DnDBeyond or other platforms (and vice versa) and note that you do not get a physical book/PDF download.
How do i get permission to post in #looking-for-dm ?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
And if you are brand new, take a look of the Free Rules on Dnd Beyond (it is a good part of the rules collected)
Check the link above to get started for your group search on the server
Is D&D beyond a popular site for D&D players?
its telling me that i don't have permission to post a message in any of them
In my experience, reasonably. Having the information in DDB or in dead tree format means that, with a little work, you can port the stuff into Roll20. I don't have any experience with Fantasy Grounds or Foundry, and minimal with Owlbear Rodeo, so I can't swear to what the experience is like on any of them.
It's pretty popular, I think. That being said, this is the discord run by the same people that run DnD Beyond, so you'll probably get a little bias in answers here.
lol, that makes sense I'm just trying to figure out where I should be investing into so I can start playing.
If you're thinking of it as investing, then invest in dead tree.
Sorry to respond at this time but 2014
Paper certainly is the safest bet, but you could always find a group first, and then purchase based on what they're using.
And as mentioned above, the free rules do give you all you need to know in order to play, if you still aren't sure about things.
You need to follow the instructions in #find-a-game. You type the /looking-for command in any channel where you can post a message.
but i don't have permissions to send a message in any of them...
You don't post messages in the LFG channels - only the bot posts messages. Thus why we ask folks to read and follow the information in #find-a-game
You can use the threads attached to posts to let folks know you're interested (or direct message the poster).
But as iamrazorwing noted, in any normal discussion channel you can start with /looking-for and then select from one of the options Discor provides to select what kind of LFG post you want the bot to create. Then after selecting your choice the bot will give you a form to fill out. Once you submit that form, the bot will create the post in the specified channel and attach a thread to it. Use the thread to provide any corrections/clarifications.
hii :p im sjoining my first campaign ever this friday so i thought i should join this server :p
Have fun.
