Artificers don't really have many mechanics that involve actually making items, contrary to popular belief. It's encouraged that they flavor their spells to look like inventions or things like that, such as the spell Fog Cloud being a stand in for smoke bombs. But they don't really have anything that gives them the ability to create a net launcher, for example.
what you are supposed to do with the class mechanics is that your infusions and spells are the items you craft
Thank you @harsh fjord I will message it
Oh this is just exploring how to use the class and trying to flavour how I'd like to approach playing it. I've never tried an artificer before so I wasn't sure if they're blessed with magic and adept at crafting or if they're just pure crafters
I would recommend reading the class before trying to create mechanics around what you think it does.
I always thought that artificers were the complete other way! Not super magical but their craft replicated magic through mundane and or scientific means!
artificers make (temporary) magic items out of ordinary stuff
Yeah in the book it says to cast a spell they may make a potent elixir, or a sigil of power, or craft a temporary charm... But then battle smiths also can craft an semi sentient automaton that can function on its own - this is where I thought of filling a clay pot/metal flask with tar/gunpowder and a fuse for an explosive wouldn't be too far out of the ordinary?
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the mechanics at the moment
Maybe that's too far out of the class tho. Homebrew area for sure I guess
well the battle smith steel defender is also meant to be magical in nature, more similar to a golem than to a scifi robot
@mellow plinth ? Look up.
you can craft stuff in dnd, and at level 10, artificers get a buff to crafting things faster/cheaper but its not as substantial as the magical gadget thing thats is built into the class rules
I need help
Please state the nature of the medical emergency.
actually I need help in term of I want to learn how to become a gm
i want to learn everything about dnd
You’re in the right channel, then. People will help you when they’re able.
Please don’t tag the entire moderator team for non-emergencies.
oh sorry
For getting started with being a GM:
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and check out Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). Those should help get you started. There are a bunch of other resources as you encounter new challenges as well.
My list of tips: #dnd-newcomers message
You can also search the server using dm advice and/or dm tips as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!
i don't do great with just reading and watching YouTube video I need real people chat with me to teach me
cause I have a lot of question that need to be answered
Then you might need to look for learning sessions online or at local game stores/libraries. It's not super likely someone is going to walk you through everything in a fifty-year-old hobby.
I don't have local game store in my country or I don't even know is there are even anyone in this country play dnd
You might be interested in the learn-to-play sessions offered through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab), then.
thanks
So, @limber timber , I'm taking it you've never played D&D? How about any other role-playing game?
the most is genshin impact but I only play for a couple of week
I'm talking about tabletop roleplay, where one person (the DM or GM) describes a scene and the players all play their own characters describing what they do. Any of that?
never once
Okay, so that's the basic idea.
I only heard about dnd just a few week back
What makes it sound fun to you? What kind of things are you looking forward to?
I have a great imagination and I don't know what make it sound fun to me but I wanna try it
I already try to be a gm and play with my friend but it just didn't work
even though it didn't work it still fun to us
The best way to get started would be to have a look at the Free Rules and try putting a character together. It's all step by step, and if you use D&D Beyond it'll help you through the process.
the thing I want to know the most is the data
like the character sheet how to use it
How about you start here and see what class appeals to you?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
what is the small number under the modifier
You can always use Google (other search engines exist) for basic queries, like "dnd character sheet explained".
I hate Google i learn best from talking to other people or chatting
if you can't help it's fine don't waste your time on me
I'm not sure where you're looking, but I'm going to guess that's your actual ability score.
yes that thing
cause from what I watch on YouTube , they say to roll the dice then add modifier
the most important thing right now I want to know how to gm
That would be a typical ability test, yes. Roll a twenty sided die, add the modifier.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
You're going to have to take it a step at a time. You can't show up to the racecourse and say you want to race without a drivers licence.
thank you so much this is this the most clear explanation I've received
The issue we're (at least I am) running into here is that I would likely just be typing the same info that the free basic rules already have. You'd be reading the same things, just in different orders
I know, that's why I want to learn from a real person cause I can ask every question a I have, like a class you to in school
Which different orders can help, but it's tough to keep up
if any of you can't help then I'll just go find another server. sorry for wasting you guys time
There's plenty of folk here willing to lend aid. Why not keep an eye on #looking-for-players for beginners games?
but how do I ask
I mean they are looking for player to play right?
If you find a game willing to let you join and teach you then that's the best way to learn
Find a thread that advertises what you're after, tap on messages, see if they're still taking people.
Playing the game with people who know how it works can often be a great "in"
and I want to learn about dnd cause I want to teach it to my friend so we all understand how to play
You are going to have the hardest time trying to run a game if you don't know how it works.
So play, find out, then put what you've learnt to work.
you know what, it's fine, I just find other thing to play with my friend
That's totally fine too. There are many, many role-playing games out there if that's what you're interested in, and a bunch of the ones you can get free have less rules, too. Honey Heist is one.
D&D just has the biggest player base, the most support and resources.
i'm sorry to hear you're discouraged from playing! yeah, dnd can feel very daunting and the barrier to entry can turn off a lot of players. but may of us look back and see that effort we put in as well worth it.
that said, there's definitely a lot of systems out there that have simpler rulesets than dnd that might strike your fancy
can someone teach me how to use saving throws and what to do with my armour class
please
There are two numbers related to this topic, known as a character's AC and a character's DC.
- Your AC (Armor Class) is the number a different creature has to beat when they make an attack on you.
- Your DC (Difficult Class) is the number a different creature has beat when you force them to make a saving throw.
Whether something you do requires someone to make an attack or a saving throw, it will say so.
tysm
So, firstly, we have to understand what a "d20 test" is. A d20 test is any time you roll a d20 (a 20 sided die) to see if you succeed to fail at something. There are 3 types of d20 tests:
- Attack Rolls
- Ability Checks
- Saving Throws
Attacks rolls are something you do to attack another creature. Ability Checks are something you do to complete a task or use a skill or tool. Saving Throws are something you do to avoid danger or resist a harmful effect.
Whenever you roll a d20 test, there is a number you need to beat in order to succeed. You roll the 20 sided die, then add your modifiers to that roll, and if the total is equal to or higher then the target number, you succeed. For ability checks and saving throws, this is called the "Difficulty Class" of the roll. For attack rolls, you have to beat the target's Armor Class. So your AC is the number other creatures need to beat to hit you with an attack
i do understand the part where to succeed we have to beat a certain dc but ehat i dont understand is ac and st
does the ac of the person attacking need to be more than yours to hit you? If it is can they somehow still hit you? Why and in which situations do we need to roll a saving throw
it was still very help full
ty
So, if you are attacking another creature, you don't have to worry about your own AC at all. You make an attack roll, and add your ability score modifier and proficiency bonus to that roll. Then, if the total is equal to or greater than the target's AC, you will hit. If its lower, you miss.
When someone attacks you, their total needs to be equal to or greater than your AC. If its lower, they miss.
You never compare the AC of 1 target to the AC of another
As for what situations you need to roll a saving throw, that basically just comes down to "whenever something says so." Some spells will say something like "the target makes a wisdom saving throw" or one of the abilities in a monster's stat block might say "Each creature within the area makes a dexterity saving throw." Your DM will announce it to you, whenever you need to make a saving throw
Is there a good resource to learn the basics of DM'ing
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The two bot posts above are an excellent starting point, and have some good advice and resources. If you're more of a visual learner, I highly recommend the Youtube series "Running the Game" by Matt Colville
Thank you very much!
Ditto the Matt Colville recommendation. I also think this is a pretty solid intro: https://howtogm.guide/
ohh thats so helpfull!

Does anyone know about a dice rolling website that publicly shows dice rolls?
D&D Beyond and Roll 20 are some of the more popular ones
It shares the result of the roll, not the act of rolling.
Likely because their dice are based on physics, and even the size of your screen can effect the outcome (as it bounces off the sides).
So if you were sharing it with people on different sizes screens, it wouldn't work very well.
Okay I see
So would I need to like send them some kinda invite so we can share them? Or something else.
You can also just use a site like https://www.rolldicewithfriends.com/, https://dddice.com/, or https://rolz.org/. (I just Googled online dice room.)
Ive joined 5 discord DnD servers and cannot get into my first game or find one to save my life
Hello, im currently in my first dnd campaign, but i was looking for others
The place to put an ad is #looking-for-players by following the instructions in #find-a-game.
Finding a group that aligns with your schedule/preferences/etc. isn't easy! Have you used this server's Looking for Game/Group channels? And you can also search outside of Discord as well!
Have you tried your FLGS? Most likely, there will be someone running a D&D game.
What’s best class for persuasion
Finding a suitable DnD group might take several months. Finding a reliable group of DnD players that are compatible with you is a big challenge every DnD player has to face.
is there a place to put a character i made which is my first and have people judge it?
#character-discussion is usually good for that
can i put my character sheet there?
I don't believe you can directly upload a file like that anywhere, but you should be able to link to something like Google drive
Google drive is your best bet and attach a link but idk if it’s allowed
i have it on google drive

Is anyone a dm who can join a call with my friend and help him with building his character that isn’t a rouge…. He wants to build a character for persuasion and I can’t help him much since I’m a rookie myself
Best thing to do is have them join the server and go to #character-discussion and have them explain what they're trying to build and why. Folks there can help walk through various build concepts and help out.
@mint smelt
Hi
do any newcomers wanna start our own session? we can try sum out and see how it goes
tbh, i was thinking i can wing it lol
The PHB/DMG isn’t necessary to start out, the Free Rules is all you need
Also, please use the LFG channels to advertise/organize a game!
I mean to at least have acess to both
For rulings and stuff that will pop up
Because things WILL happen that you need to consult on or both books for
Also not strictly necessary, the Free Rules covers most of the same core ruleset as the PHB and DMG
I'm saying this as a dm with 7 years experience, hain acess to both just helps you more
Sure, and I’ve been with the game as a DM and a player almost a decade, I’m not disagreeing that the PHB and DMG aren’t helpful, I’m just saying they’re not strictly necessary and especially not for newbies
@elder pewter you should teach me the ways man, i want to learn from someone who has some proper experience in the art of being a DM
You should check out #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building ! There’s plenty of friendly people over there with tons of experience :)
How do I put skill prof. on my character sheet?
I’m such a rookie lol 😂
What’s point buy and standard array?
I was scrolling through youtube shorts and saw a comment mentioning something about shadow monks being able to do this "darkness devils sight combo starting level 3"
What do they mean by that
The section you’re talking about is just listing the maximum possible stat range for all applicable creatures/entities in D&D. As noted by the section I’ll link, the soft cap for Player stats in 5e is 20, after which only special features and items may increase their stats above 20 (i.e. very rare magic items, Barbarian’s 20th level feature)
Okay
I’ll explain in a second I’m just going to link Diablo to the relevant section on generating ability scores
oh okok ty
I’m not sure what these mean either
This section summarises how to generate stats using PB or SA
As well as the official rolling method
The Darkness-Devil's Sight combo is an old Warlock combo that involves learning the Darkness spell and taking the Devil's Sight invocation. It was typically done for Hexblade Warlocks since it meant they could consistently attack an enemy with advantage while they had disadvantage against them. This was because the Darkness spell creates an area of magical darkness that even creatures with darkvision couldn't see in, while Devil's Sight allows the Warlock to see in both magical and non-magical darkness.
The new 2024 Shadow Monk is similar in that it gets to cast a special version of the Darkness spell that only they can see into. It's a fun combo in theory, but in practice it's not very good unless your teammates also have a way to see into that darkness.
Thanks we used standard array but moved some of the numbers differently, does that matter?
Did you change the numbers or did you just move them around to different abilities?
Diff abilities
Yeah that’s fine and how it’s supposed to be
Ok okay
See the link I sent earlier which has the subheader “Assign Ability Scores”
It also has a table of recommendations for each class
Ohhh okay so that’s the recommendation for it okay… that’s what I was basing it around just moving stats to benefit the setup better lol
What does passive perception and initiative mean on the character sheet?
Passive perception is basically "The DC of a stealth check to hide from this character if it is not actively looking." That is, if you have a passive perception of 12, then something trying to hide from you is going to have to roll a 12 or higher to remain hidden. Same applies for monsters, if you're trying to sneak past a monster, you have to roll stealth higher than the passive perception of that monster.
Initiative on your character sheet is whatever bonus you'll get to your initiative rolls. When combat starts, you'll roll a d20 for initiative, which is the turn order. You, your teammates, and the monsters will all roll, higher numbers go first. If you have a +3 to initiative, then you're rolling 1d20+3. Higher DEX means higher initiative bonus, you can also boost that number through feats like "Alert."
Well, part of that is a misconception actually. Since Hiding is more codified now in the recently released 2024 free rules / PHB, Passive Perception is basically just "The DM uses this score when determining whether a creature notices something without consciously making a (check)"
How to play dnd beyond mobile game
I answered you in #dnd-discussion channel where you originally posted
there is a app to read the books and make character sheet but not a mobile game
So… if I want to use a gauntlet with a crystal etched into it as my arcane focus for my wizard, what should I grab in the equipment section of character creation? (Referring to dndbeyond)
Aside the crystal-
I'd just create a custom item to reflect that - on the front end of the DDB character sheet go to Inventory and click the Manage Inventory button. The sidebar will open where there's a section called Add Custom Item. Click that. In the fields, fill in the name and whatever other info you need ("Crystal Gauntlet Focus" for name maybe), then click the Add Item button to add it to your inventory.
Thank you
Oh, is there a way to make that appear on my Weapons section on the bottom left?
Why would it be a weapon though? It's just a arcane focus right?
I m new to this game and have I m really interested to start to play is some suggestion how I start also is my partner and we want to play but in 2 is impossible
If you're looking for a group/game to join, check out #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community (and see #find-a-game to learn more about how our Looking For Game channels work).
Silly little question, i've been browsing the looking for players tab and most seem to be centered on American timezones. Is this an "American only" server, or is there a fairly active community of European that would arrange sessions at a time more suited for my weary little European mind? :)
This server is global but English only postings for moderation reasons. I'd focus less on timezones per se and look at "am I available to play at that time in my timezone?"
There may be European D&D servers and games as well.
Potentially check out #looking-for-community for other D&D servers that may have more European players or games that run in more European-friendly timezones,
Ok, thanks alot! I was indeed looking at when i'm available rather than writing off all the different timezones from the get go, but what is a reasonable time to play in EST tends to be less so in CET haha. I will deff look at the communites tab :)
Hello, dumb question but I'm new to DnD, only starting my 2nd campaign and finally bought some physical dice to roll with myself since I had only played digitally before. I bought some mystery dice packs online and was wondering if people had a definitive way to tell if a particular dice was gemstone/stone or resin? Cause I have some that definately feels heavier akin to metal dice but I'm not 100% sure if these are just really nice resin or gemstone and I don't want to keep the ones that are gemstone just in a plastic case
Hi I'm new not shore what to say im trying to learn how to play , I sound a bit stupid I know but basicly my teen son have got them self dungeon and dragons and I have no idear so I thought maybe I learn a bit 1st lol 😅 I normal pick things up fast so should be intersting

Maybe folks in #merch-and-dice have some pointers?
What kind of help were you looking for specifically?
I dont really know where to start
If youre a new DM try and roll an essentials kit or a level 1 dungeon like the Sunless Citadel if youre able to get it because trying to run a world you dont fully understand is hell, and when you’re doing a module you feel part of the adventure instead of a machine computing consequence which often results in creative burnout if you do homebrew
Its my First time being a dm
We alredy tried One of those
What happened?
I Just want to create a good story for me and my Friends to play
Yeah we did One of those
We did that One i think
I personally liked It but my Friends didnt like the story
They also didnt like how the characters were alredy made
Tbh the modules are not super-story focused, theyre mostly justifications for people to go places and kill stuff etc
Yes Im about a 14month old DM
Oh i see
I did homebrew before modules but I enjoyed modules more because Homebrew gets exhausting
Its hard work
Its hard to measure progression but I would say yes
They are really happy to play but at the same time when they played they felt like machines
Tell me more about “they felt like machines”
Thats why i wanted to create a more open story so that they can make theyr decisiona
Like the only thing they didnwas attacking or moving they never tried to engage with the NPC's atpund them or stuff like that
Ok are they beginners?
I think ita because they didnt like their characters
Yes we're all beginners except for me i played with some other Friends but i wasnt the DM
Were they the playing pre-written characters?
Yes they were alredy there in the box
I think you should start by talking with your group. Have a discussion about the kind of story you all want to tell together.
Hm i see i could do that
Let people be who they want to be
Yeah i also tought that thats why we bought the players handbook
We all put some Money in it
Should i let them create theyr own stroyes
Like what happened before the story im about to create?
If youre teh DM you wont be able to entertain entire backstories
Tell them to write their characters sure, but ask them for a couple of NPCs that you can use as threads to pull on
For example players often respond if an NPC they created needs help or is in trouble
I would write the story first and then include the PC backstories
I think the pre-wtitten story we bought was pretty life-less
But what if the story and the backstory dont match
Because if you dont write the story first you’re creative liberties are reduced and thats not fun for you
Unfortunately thats where your players will sort of have to compromise more for you
Mh yeah thats right
We alredy have the characters tho and they have a background
I think i should respect at least taht
Written backgrounds?
In the handbook it said to choose a background
Oh thats fine
We're 7 plus me
Its easy to come up with reasons for PCs to be somewhere
That's a large group for a new DM.
Yeah i also tought of that
That is a massive group yeah
I dont host more than 5 and Ive been going for over a year my dude
I know at First we had to be 5 then someone else added themself in
Uncool.
And then someone else Little Brother too and hes a pest
You can say "No" as the DM. It's actually a key tool.
I was gonna say that razor
Like wait hes not a pest hes really sweet, but he gets bored Quickly
Like short attention span?
Thats why i gave him the Bard and the soldier background
Yes
That’s probably because there’s 7 people all trying to get the DMs attention
To do something
Turns take longer because everyone’s probably hmmming and ummming instead of f planning their turn ahead of time
Yeah probably
If youre a beginner DM honestly bro
Also if they die in a Battle are they out Forever
I wouldn’t host more than 4 people
Because the amount of digestion you have to be capable of is so much, 7 is way too many
I started with 3 and now that Im pretty fast I’m going to 5
Yeah i know the problem Is that 1 of them almost Always cant
Cant come to play with us,
All the other are Always there
Is it hard to create adventures for just 2 players?
I havent tried but I imagine its quite easy
I Hope ill be able to make It then
Often the more players you have, even with 3 players, they all have different ideas for how to approach a problem or direction to choose
2 players will be: “hey bro left or right” “ hmmm left”
Cause i cant Just expell someone now
Like form the grouo
Who was the previous DM
Me
There was no DM before you?
The One were i was playing as a character was another friend group
Oh I get it
We were like 6 usually
So how long have you you been playing, and then how long have you DM’d?
As a character we had like 30 meetings
As dungeon master like 8 with the pre-made story
Yeah ok I would just be honest with my players and say how you feel
“Guys, I sense theres some boredom and disinterest. 7 players is a lot for me and Im struggling. I’m ok to host 4 players and we’ll run a homebrew, you guys can make your characters instead of using premades.”
Ive never personally expelled someone from a group, Im lucky that way
The simplest way is to dissolve the table and then ask 4 players if they want to try again
The only other option for them is for someone else to step up as DM
Oh yeah
They have never played before except for the pre-made story 😔
Aw man that actually sucks
The alternative is you could lay what I said on the table with like
Yeah i know its a bad situation
“Listen guys 7 is a lot and its hard but Ill do my best”
Yeah i think ill do that, they're really understanding
“Let’s do session 0 together, I’m gonna make a homebrew for us and I’ll have an ending to the campaign in my head that once you’s succeed, the campaign will end, and then we can talk about doing another campaign”
Yeah i think ill do that
🙂
Thank you so much 🙏🏻

Hi! I'm Albedo and I'm new to DnD
Hello! Welcome 😃
Yoo what do yall think is the best way to learn the game? Playing or cramming like college ? Trying to find a game but it would be my first
There’s just so much material to read
The best way is the one that works for you.
Some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons) just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo (https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en).
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules).
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
Thank you

They want me to make one
On your own?
Hello everyone, i am not that new to dnd but i do need some help with some of the more important stuff because i do come from a group of a very not so friendly campaign and i didnt learn much on it... yay.... (i like to play kobold if possible)
What specific questions do you have?
(also see this [message](#dnd-newcomers message) with links to useful resources including the free basic rules)
Well mostly on how do spell slots and patreon powers work. Because my usual class is warlock and i still dont fully know how to use like... the basics of basics
So a Warlock patron is just a thematic way the warlock gets their magic - it otherwise doesn't have a mechanical effect in the game rules as written.
Spell slots represent the amount of times you can cast spells at the specified level. It's a way to mechanically represent that a caster only has so much magical juice to cast bigger/more powerful spells.
A warlock regains their expended spell slots on a short rest.
So its basically how much mana you have is what im getting at?
Yeah kind of like that!
Spell slots are the resource that you expend to cast spells. If you want to cast a 1st level spell, you expend a 1st level spell slot. If you want to cast a 2nd level spell, you expend a 2nd level spell slot. You can expend spell slots of a higher level to cast spells of a lower level, and some spells get bonus effects when you do this. Warlocks specifically, as they level up, all of their spell slots convert into higher level ones. Every other spell caster in the game keeps their lower level spell slots, and then get new ones in addition, but warlocks upgrade them instead. So a warlock's spells are always going to be upcasted
Yeah a warlock casts their leveled spells (the ones that take spell slots) at the highest available spell slot they have.
I didnt know that at all
Its good to know now tho, and also about the patron, i got it mostly, the thing im wondering rn is if the patron i chose who is Tiamat is homebrew or not?
Just FYI, you mean "patron." Patreon is the name of a website
Yeah mb-
Yah
So, warlock patrons are their subclasses. Your subclass is based on the type of entity your patron is, like a fiend or an archfey for example. Tiamat is a devil, so if you choose the Fiend Patron subclass, that could be who your patron is
And for the start I have to start with one different patron until i get the fiend subclass?
That's not cool of your DM. You should probably read the Playing the Game and Creating a Character sections in full, plus the section on whatever class you pick in the free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules).
That would be a story and role play element, which means its up to you. In the 2024 rules, warlocks unlock their subclass at level 3, but warlock powers always come from a patron. It's up to you how that might work, whether you made a deal with more than one entity, or if you were with this same entity from the start, or if you didn't know who your deal was with and find out at level 3. Part of the fun of D&D is that you get to tell your own story
They said they wanted me to do it cuz they want me to do the stuff and I'm one of the people that say yes to everything so
Well at first i started it as a backstory related for my kobold warlock, whose whole tribe was enslaved by humans and he wanted to find ways to turn humans and other races into kobolds, so he started a cult for tiamat in hopes of her managing to help his ambition
Then it sounds like you were probably trying to make a pact with her from the start. No need to bother with other entities or big reveals then
Yeah i could guess that much
Sadly our dm really never let us fulfill those ambitions and usually ended our characters pretty early in like the first 4 sessions
Or the other players are just not that serious and do everything as a joke from the start and so i really could not learn much
That's unfortunate
Unfortunately yeah
And honestly they are the only group i have played with
I just wish to be able to play it with other people and not complete idiots that make off brand characters
Rn im just kinda hoping i find a group to play with and appreciate the game
Well, you can always try fining a game online

Oh i guess I could do that
Wow there are alot of them and interesting too
What is better to join anyway? A community or a group?
That depends on what you want. A group is likely the same set of people playing a consistent story; this is also more difficult to schedule. A community is probably full of DMs and players so that folks sign up when they're available, but you may be playing with an entirely different set of players and DMs. That does make scheduling less of a headache, typically.
A community sounds way better as of now since i dont have that much free time
There you go, then!
Honestly the one im looking at is myuelta
Seems like the one that i could potentially enjoy the most but i dont know if its good to just straight up join...
You could contact the person who posted the ad, see if it'd deliver what you're seeking!
The thread, unless they specify private messages.
Well i sent it to DMs... i hope i didnt mess it up
buhhh its so hard to find someone with a campaign at reasonable times that i can join sob
is it likely easier to see if i can do d&d with friends rather than trying to find people here?
hi i am new to dnd and only palyed other ttrpg a bit .I would love to play dnd online and i wanted to ask if annyone has some tips ?

So I was looking I want to be a rogue but what should I use for my stats
Dex
That should be your main stat
Rogues usually have high Dexterity. Charisma can help if you want to work the social angle, Intelligence and Wisdom if you want to make the most of your skills.
And usually depending on the role I'll go with charisma or wisdom
hey everyone! im new around here, so what should i be doing?

Worth a shot!
Hey i am new! So im thinking of multiclassing a Wizard with the Order of scribes but also a artificer. I would love to know how that could work but im confused about the order of scribes.
Confused in what way?
Like does it write down spells like rune type stuff or is it completly different?
That sounds like a question of flavor, which you can usually describe as you like. Unless you're referring to something different within the class.
Like can the writing hold spells is what im trying to say
They still need to use a spellbook, same as any other wizard.
Can the writing be on anything or is it specifically limited to paper?
If I recall correctly, the rules don't specify the nature of the spellbook, so you'd have to ask your DM.
If you want confirmation of what the rules say, we do have #dnd-rules. They're very knowledgeable.
Alr thx
Hello
Hello! I’m new to the server and I really want to get into actual D&D. I have been playing for a little bit but mostly really heavy homebrew stuff.- but I wanna really really get into it! ^w^
hi i’m new to dnd and would like to learn how to play an easy and fun campaign

Hey! Always glad to hear of people looking to get into D&D. The above checklist of links is a great way to get started. Feel free to ask any questions you have about anything that doesnt make sense here and there will more than likely be people around to help out
(New to DnD, in a dnd club at my school and already made a character)
thank you very much i hope to play many campaigns

So what would be the definetion of "Off-Session" in DND context
If I wanted to use a character 'off session' from said dnd club in a different game, would that be 'off session'?
My DM tho said it was verboten tho but im curious
There's no exact definition. But playing them in a totally different game would most likely count yes
Because you're using them out of your normal game sessions with the DM
If anyone who is also new, finds a campaign let me know! would love to join
Ik my character is British Freddy Fazbear (Sir Freddison) who is Chaotic Neutral rogue halfling, oh and he is somehow very pompus, too polite, a communist (don't ask me why) and is more deranged than actual freddy
there is a channel to find a party #looking-for-players #looking-for-dm , good luck.
I just found it, thank you
I just made a character, how do i look for group? I see looking for player and looking for dm, but im looking for someone to introduce me to this. Do i go looking for DM?

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to d&d, is there anyone who might be able to teach me a bit. I would love to join the d&d community
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
Well technically I know about nothing of dnd so I have no idea how to start or where to start or what to do
Check out #learn-to-play, then!
Honesty I’d join you. Cause I don’t know a thing too hahah besides my bg3 knowledge
Hello there
I don't even have bg knowledge lol
The basic idea: join a Dungeon Master (DM) for a game of heroic fantasy adventure. As a player, you take the role of a character who may be a human, dwarf, elf or otherwise, with a class that determines your primary abilities and special features like a wizard's spellcasting or a bard's inspiration.
The DM narrates the scene, giving you a picture of the situation, and you choose how your character acts.
When there's some uncertainty about the success of a particular action you'll be asked to roll a d20 (a twenty sided die) and typically add one or more numbers to the result depending on your character's capabilities (like skill proficiency and your relevant ability score bonus).
Is Dragons of Storm Wreck isle a good campaign to do if you haven’t been a DM before?
It depends on the rules of the club/community and your DM. If they’ve made a game and expect the characters to be just a part of their story, then taking your character in/out of that story for other adventures wouldn’t make sense. You’d be getting levels and items your DM isn’t planning for.
If the community you are in is set up for characters to play at different tables or adventures, then you’d be able to take them to different tables.
The vast majority of games or groups generally abide by the idea that your character is for the one table they’re being played at.
Sure, it's designed to be a starter adventure
Cheers

How do I use DND beyond to play with people?
This article covers the basics for using D&D Beyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/754-how-to-play-dungeons-dragons-using-d-d-beyond
#find-a-game , local game TTRPG/game stores, FB groups, public libraries, etc
Can I play with u guys?
I’d look into FB groups of you live close to a large city. Most have a D&D/Pathfinder or general Roleplay group
Unfortunately no. My party has a pretty strong in-person preference
Also look at #looking-for-dm . DMs are always looking for new players to explore and appreciate their worlds
But do I need to buy a set before I can play
Set of what? All you really need to play is a good attitude, a pencil, and paper (or pdf character sheet if you use online resources)
If you're running a game as a DM and want an easy starting point, the starter sets do a good job.
If you're just trying to join a game as a player, the Free Rules and some digital dice will do the trick.
Ok I thx
How does flying work? Are you able to go higher using more of your speed or is it limited to just like above ground units?
The battle map is a 3D space, and you can expend movement to go up or down if you have a flying speed
Don't expect to find a game and start playing in a single day. You have to remember, D&D campaigns are typically played over the course of weeks or months or sometimes years. If you're looking for a group to join, your trying to find 4-5 people who are interested in the same style of game as you, who have an opening in their schedule at the same as you, and can commit to that time slot for the foreseeable future. It takes a lot of work to find a group and schedule a game
this is whats been putting me off, finding people to play with at an exact time constantly
You could look out for one-shot adventures. You'd miss out on the continuity aspect, but you'd get to play.
sounds good
Do you need anyone
I'm open at anytime during weekends
not yet, im just learning character creation
Remember soliciting games must be done in the appropriate channels, which you can do under #find-a-game
hey, anyone here knows how to use roll 20 to make a character i need help
#third-party might be best for that, but how far have you gotten?
the thing is we already made him but he seems unfinished so i wanted to remake him better
Should be able to edit the Roll20 sheet manually, from what I recall. If you're looking for tips to adjust the build for greater effect, there's #character-discussion or #optimization .
i am scared as hell but thank you

This is the official D&D server and we don’t list other TTRPG games in our looking for game channels. But if you are looking for a D&D game, read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels.
Question tho, if I buy a kit which one do I buy the essential kit or a starter kit?
Both are fine options. Though personally I think the starter set is a bit easier for new DMs

That would be a good question for #third-party (although DnDBeyond does have the Maps tool - requires a Master tier subsciption to use)
Hello, I'm barely just now getting into DnD, and I want to learn more about it, I know the base part of the game, but I still need recommendations and help for games, I'm a player and I might try to be a DM, but I definitely need to get more stuff before I do, i am a Minor but I'm not comfortable discussing my age, if enyone can just give me a few tips that is ok

Hey! Always glad to hear new people getting into D&D. Was there anything in particular that you were looking for advice regarding?
For getting into DMing I would always recommend picking up a 4-hour, Tier 1 (levels 1-4) module from the DMs Guild. They're both cheap and dont come attached with the commitment of running a full campaign to get the full experience.
Hello! I was mainly wondering about the different calls I think their called? Like perception and other things, I was also wondering about spells aswell because my character is a green dragonborn wizard, and I've been trying to figure out how to cast spells for my schools DnD club faster, my club uses DnD beyond and it's just a bit confusing for me ^^"
The best way to learn about Ability Checks is probably just by me linking you the parts of the Basic Rules. Are you using the 2014 or revised 2024 rules?
As for casting your spells faster, the best way would be to study up on the spells at your disposal and understand how they work. Knowing what saving throws you need the DM to roll, and when they need to be rolled are good things to know off the top of your head.
I actually need to figure out what rulebook I should use, I haven't really been able to check it out because my club keeps talking before we can actually do enything, and I've tried to look at it other days but it's mostly confusing how to work it, I have the Dnd rulebook for 2024 right now on my phone that I'm going to check out.
Sure thing, this is the list of skill proficiencies that each explain when they should be used
Hi, um I'm really new to DnD and I have no idea what I'm doing. I would like some help to get started, as well as to learn.

Hello! The above links are a great place to get started with. Feel free to ask any questions you have in this channel if you get stuck
I would highly recommend picking up a one shot module designed for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) from the DMs Guild. The adventures there are very affordable and can be finished in a single session so you dont feel like you need to make a campign out of it
This guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_) are good places to start!
is there anywhere that I can ask for a dm as a new player instead of looking through #looking-for-players ? I can't find any in there that I'm sure are available or are semi-new player friendly
please reply with mentioning on if you are to answer this
Check #looking-for-community for other D&D servers that may have other D&D games you could join
alright thanks
welp, all the good ones are 18+ only groups..
:(
Thankyou!!:3
Thankyou!!:D
Sorry I'm trying my best to understand, but d&d beyond only has limited amount of species or races for character creation. And people are still using E5 I heard and it's gotten all complicated. The new character sheets looks cool, but you can't write in it in pdf form like E5 character sheets. Unless that's just the website version. Anyways I've gotten all confused on how to create a character, and I'm not entirely thrilled to be limited to D&DB free species just to build a character
is there a possibility of finding table top sim games on here ?
im trying to learn dnd but im having no real luck
Possible, but I don't think it's an especially common platform here.
You need a way to communicate and roll dice (or otherwise generate random numbers). Everything else falls under the "nice to have but not actually essential" header.
ok so kinda a trust system built up between all players and their individual character sheets infront of them ?
That's true for the Basic Rules (2014) or the Free Rules (2022): you have access to limited free options unless you purchase content or are in a game with some sharing access.
You can always use a 2014 character sheet as the information isn't different; it's just organized differently. Both sets of rules give you the character creation process (though I've been told 2022's is friendlier to newbies).
what would be achieved at a table play just over a zoom or discord setting
I mean, the DM would likely ask for your character sheet, but yeah, trust is key. Folks shouldn't be adding equipment they don't have or failing to track HP. You don't need a platorm like Roll20 or D&D Beyond for that.
I'd like to use a character that isn't available unless you pay, can't decide between owling or changling warlock
Are you asking about the difference between online and physical play? I'm not sure I get your question.
Both cool options!
no sorry i was just stating that DDO would essentailly be the same as if i was playing in person just over a discord setting
you mentioned DND online does that have the possibility to link to other players ?
sorry
beyond
This article will help explain what D&D Beyond does better than I could summarize: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/754-how-to-play-dungeons-dragons-using-d-d-beyond
appreciated
@eternal panther DNDbeyond has lots of great sources for free, including character builder. There’s #character-discussion if youre lost or need help.
Alright, thank you
Who do I send my character to?
To your Dungeon Master and perhaps the other players you're playing D&D with.
Or are you asking for folks to review your character? You can share your character build with folks in #character-discussion
I am totally new and a noob so i don't have a dungeon master or anyone to play with

Hi all! Just kinda did a one shot for like an hour a few months ago and want to give this another shot. What do yall think about a combo character of mordecai and rigby?
Give em monk way of the fist and like the death block n stuff
what would be a good class recommened for beginners?
Whatever interests you most!
The table here should give you some idea of which classes are more or less complex:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
But none of it is unknowable; some just take a little more study than others.
At the end of the day, you’ll have more fun with a character that excites you.
all the camp posting are in EST, is there a better place to look for games in europe?
i’ve been interested in playing dnd for a while but specifically i’ve been interested in dming
do i need to play first as a player or can i immediately start to dm? i’m researching either way
People can (and do!) start as a DM first all the time.
Getting one of the starter sets or another premade adventure is a good way to ease in.
i think the class that interests you the most will be the easiest to learn
if you’re asking objectively, i would probably nominate barbarian, rogue, and warlock as the simplest classes to learn. honorable mention to warlock because i feel like it’s best for beginners who want to get into spellcasting.
what’s a good pre-made adventure? or is this the wrong channel to ask
i’d suggest one of the setting books. they have short plot hooks thatre good for learning the system
i also recommend tales of yawning portal
awesome thank you!! i’ll check them out
Sunless Citadel from Yawning Portal is S tier I loved it
My players almost cried at the end and it was like 4-5 sessions long
can you be an arthro cat in dnd
Yes its called a Tabaxi or Leonin if your DM allows that content
Hey I'm fairly new to the game, does anyone know if there is any way for me to play the artificer class on DnD beyond without paying for the pack?
If you join a campaign where someone else is sharing it with you, you can use it in that campaign.
To use it anywhere else, you'd need to own it yourself.
ok thanks
You can learn more about content sharing here:

yeah im checking that out rn

hi! I have always been wanting to play Dnd , but sadly all my friends, including me are always busy. Been doing some Dnd art Commissions and i am having a lot of fun doing it, but I realized that I barely know anything about it, i feel like I'll be able to deliver better quality of art if I know how dnd works my self.
Welcome both of you! If you scroll up just a few messages, the bot post above has some excellent resources to help you get started.
that does but all that really is confusing
i mean yeah that could work. but what if i kinda struggle to get started myself
id pretty much rather have someone explain it to me or learn through experience

same bro same
yup me too!

nope, I'll check out the videos now

exactly yeah

what's #find-a-game for then?

Hi
Hi I am yet to figure out how D&D works I just joined bc I'm a Whovian looking for another nerd hobby.
The resources above should help!
Which "old version"?
Can you be more specific?
The video game? This: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons:_Dragonshard ?
Yup
This channel's for helping people get started with the TTRPG, but we've got #dnd-media if you want to chat about D&D video games.
Ok ok bruh
Question
Can I post my character sheet in #character-discussion ?
I just made it and I don't know if I need to post it there so people can see it
;-;
If your character sheet is hosted online, you can post a link to it. If you just have an image of it, you can upload that image to a hosting website like Imgur and post a link to the Imgur page
If I wanted a picture of my character just to make it feel more alive would I have to draw it myself? I’m terrible at drawing
Give Hero Forge a try.
Thank you 🙏
Or a character creator in a video game, or a dollmaker. You can even apply a filter or other graphical effects afterwards.
Some spells need a material component. If the component has no listed gold cost or value, you can hold your focus instead.
Were can I find that ruling
Say you want to cast the alarm spell but don't have a small bell and piece of fine silver wire. You wave your wand or magic ring or focusing crystal instead.
Then why dm say no
Do wizard have a feature that allow to substitute with arcane focus
Do wizards have a feature for that?
Wizard: "You can use an arcane focus or your spellbook as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells."
If a spell has no material components, a spellcasting focus won't help.
What spell were you trying to cast?
Haste does indeed have a material component: a shaving of licorice root.
Don't have the new description memorized. Does the required component specify a value?
But it doesn't comsume
If a spell doesn’t consume its materials and doesn’t specify a cost for them, a spellcaster can use a Component Pouch (see chapter 6) instead of providing the materials specified in the spell, or the spellcaster can substitute a Spellcasting Focus if the caster has a feature that allows that substitution.
I try to explain that
Per the rules, a spellcasting focus is a valid substitution for the licorice root specified by Haste.
He say I still have to hold the component
If we're going by the rules, your DM is wrong.
If your DM has decided to change the rules, that's not something we can help with.
I don't get what why he think that how it works
Was there a reason you didn't have a free hand to work with the arcane focus?
(assume incompetence > stupidity > malice, in that order....)
To use a Component Pouch, you must have a hand free to reach into it, and to use a Spellcasting Focus, you must hold it unless its description says otherwise (see chapter 6 for descriptions).
Speaking of wizards... 👀

Wizard
Study arcane magic and master spells for every purpose
Wizards are defined by their exhaustive study of magic’s inner workings. They cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, and spectacular transformations. Their magic conjures monsters from other planes of existence, glimpses the future, or forms protective barriers. Their mightiest spells change one substance into another, call meteors from the sky, or open portals to other worlds.

Indeed
One per class?
Except artificer, which I just realized I skipped. 🙊
But all the PHB classes, anyway.
Artificer isn't in PHB2024, anyway.
Hence why it got overlooked. All this info is just copied from there.
I like. I'd contest that Wizards are average complexity, though it does look like maybe they're lower than they were.
That's what the book says they are, and I'm not gonna argue it.
(My bandwidth has been full for.... a while now. I'm only just occasionally looking 2024 edition stuff over.)
Those rankings came from this table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
And I figured you were taking the info from PHB2024, but I'm expressing an opinion.
As did the "Likes" and the highlighted ability.
It was a misunderstanding
Does warcaster cover cost for components?
I don't think it does
Warcaster doesn't help with material components at all.
An arcane focus help only for spells with a material component that doesn't have a cost and isn't consumed.
I know that
Unless a) the specific material component is consumed (which the description will say) or b) the component has a specified value.
So I can cast somatic and vocal component
If the spell also has somatic components, you can use the same hand that's holding your arcane focus.
If it has somatic but not material, you need a free hand.
And vocal components require you to speak, regardless of what other components are involved.
Warcaster lets you satisfy the somatic requirement even when your hands are full.
<puts on teacher hat> What does the current wording of Warcaster say?
It doesn't help with vocal (or material) components.
That not what I meant
Then we need a lot more information so no goalposts are moving.
If you have Warcaster and your hands are full, you could cast a spell with VS.
That what I mean
I can use somatic with hands full
And vocal because I use my voice
Not because of warcaster
Yep!
If someone multiclasses a lvl 6 blade singer and a lvl 3 swords bard and used booming blade for a atk could they also do a sword flourish with the same atk
If you’re casting it with Bladesinger’s Extra Attack, by taking the Attack action, then yes.
But not in the same atk
Why not?
If you’ve taken the Attack action and hit with a weapon, then you qualify for Blade Flourish.
If you took the Magic action to cast the spell, then you would not.
Is it possible to fit an arcane focus crystal onto an glove
Arcane focus on a glove? Ask your DM but it could be possible.
No - it's just a focus on a glove. There's no game rule mechanical impact as far as I can tell.
And flavor (how you describe things) is free.
Then that may be problematic - things that change the expected game mechanics would be problematic.
You could potentially balance this by requiring your character to put the other hand on top of the one with the focus to make it work
But this is getting into #homebrew territory so I'll direct you there if you want to get feedback on how to make something like this balanced.
There's no specific rule against it - just rules on how to use arcane focuses.
I proably try to find a ruby of war magic in game
Why is it so hard to find people to play with 😭 everyone in the looking for players channel is in est times and that would be too late for me 😔
Have you tried other D&D servers advertising in #looking-for-community ?
They may even have play by post (text-based) D&D games which may fit any schedule.
I’ll have a look
to use a Spellcasting Focus, you must hold it unless its description says otherwise
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells#MaterialM
Wearing it on a glove is not holding it.
Can you grapple as an opportunity attack?
Hello all I'm Ra'o me to the chat looking to get into DND please help me, I haven't had the funds to get a starter kit or even the basic DND rule book yet

Read the game rules (at least enough to learn how to make/understand a character sheet and general game mechanics), make a character or two for practice, then find a group to play D&D with (read #find-a-game for helpful info and instructions on how to use our LFG channels).
Im coming from playing baldurs gate 3 and ive been searching for like discord rps that i could joing is that cool? Ive had the dnd app for a while to and have a character created thats currently level 1 idk if that affects anything or not-
Use the Looking For Game channels (see #find-a-game and #channel-guide) to find a group/game to join.
We don't actually host D&D games on this server.
#learn-to-play and check the pinned messages here in this channel
Feel free to ask any sepcific questions here as you start reading through the game rules, etc.
Hello
Hey there!
So I'm confused on how to ask to join a game? Can someone explain that?
You find a group/game that looks interesting and message the poster or in their game posts thread say you're interested.
Or in the case of a community server (e.g. those advertised in #looking-for-community - they useually have a server link) you can usually just join the server and see what games they have available there.
I'm assuming it doesn't happen often since the chat is empty? Or is it invite based?
In #looking-for-players? Sometimes the poster will say "Direct/Private message me" indicating they expect you to direct message them
Basically the LFG channels are not normal discussion channels. Folks use the bot command to post into them (see #find-a-game for information and instructions on that). The bot will give the poster a form to fill out, when the poster submits it, the bot creates a post in the specified channel and attaches a thread to the post.
Ah okay so all I gotta do is just do that and wait for someone
Or look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and message the poster or use the thread attached to the post to indicate that you're interested - e.g. "I'm interested in this game."

Hi and welcome! Dnd is fun and great for making friends 😃 you might want to check #find-a-game and #looking-for-players
Good day, I'm a newbie here too. Are there any procedures or things that I should know as a newbie?
hiii, i am kinda new to D&D i have played it before but only once and i would like to fully learn about it
I wanna be apart of a playthrough my DM quit on us and ive recently fallen in love with dNd
ive always been interestd in dnd but its very complicated and intricate and i have no idea where to start
umm, how or where do i ask if there is a specific theme or genre or how ever to see if there is a specific server or game going on for a theme?
@agile moon @gloomy rose @woven copper :
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. While it can be nice to find a DM that is willing to teach newbies, it’s most helpful if you can meet them halfway or further to ease their burden.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games.
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Is it ok if my character is like, a gag character
Or something like that?
Just asking, because I'm thinking of making another character like that
Usually if a DM posting doesn’t specify the kind of game they’re running you can ask. In fact, it’s good practice to have a group be on the same page for game theming, as no one wants to play a grimdark when they wanted high fantasy and vice versa
helloo, hi i’m also new !! i’ve never played dnd and i just wanna learn and make friends
It can be controversial! Gag characters are usually better for one-shots since they tend to only have one schtick and jokes can only run on for so long (i.e. not over a long-form campaign). For normal games it’s better to run a non-gag character with more depth.
You can make whatever character you like at any time for any reason.
However, a DM hosting a game for you can apply restrictions and requirements to the characters they're happy to accept.
question ! how do you get started? sorry really very new
is there anyone that can guide?
Peep my response to the other newbies above!
the character sheet seems very overwhelming
It is a very thorough sheet for sure
Thankfully the Free Rules takes you through it at your own pace, step by step
what characters are easy to make? like class? id prefer bard but it says here that it’s complex?
Fighter and Barbarian generally have less decisions to make, but complexity shouldn’t discourage you from trying out Bard. The more interested you are in playing a class the better you’ll learn it, regardless of how “hard” it is considered.
Hello im new to dnd i want to play a game online, i use roll 20 i dont understand a single thing 😃
Ive made a character a mage
Hello I'm new here and want to play but i don't know where to start
My character is a barbarian
I want help with designing my character, his backstory an i also want to understand the leveling system and the species
Is there anything I have to buy before I start playing?
how do unarmed strikes work?
2014 or 2024?
the core rules you need to play are free.
Oh okay that’s fine then thank you 🙏
you need a character sheet and dice, but the later can be borrowed and both can be digital for free too
2014
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#MeleeAttacks
Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes.
some features will modify unarmed strikes, like monk's martial arts or some species' claws etc
A. Thank you so much, a lot of sources make unarmed strikes seem confusing.
B. For a shortbow, would we add any damage to that 1d6 piercing?
you add your dexterity modifier to damage from ranged weapons
so if you have 16 or 17 dex, you add +3 to your d6
hello i want to become a good supporter what spells and race should i be?
race/species doesnt really matter.
you can make support oriented character from most classes, though clerics, wizards and bards have the biggest arsenal.
bless is a good and basic support spell
i just finished my sheet idk if its good
Im pretty new to DMing, the party I play with is a group of 5 players at lvl 4. Next week they are facing a sort of end-of-arc boss, and Im not sure how to play it out. Ive been reading up and watching vids on how to make combat more engaging, but I was wondering if anyone has any specific advice for this encounter, such as what sort of NPC i should prepare for combat, how to make a long/drawn out fight engaging: any suggestions really. Thank you.
A nice big monster with some special moves (legendary actions), an engaging environment that offers challenges and opportunities, and minions. Two or three lesser creatures to help tie up some of the party and stop them from exclusively focusing on the boss. You can always add more during the fight if they die quickly.
matt colville's action oriented monsters could be what you want
You can share it over in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check it for you.
Omegon... why is your avatar a cuthulu? Squid....
Good to know... anyway... why is my way to prodcast dnd suddenly goes no access? Ok it might be a bug... but I'm not planning on touching that anyway so...
Have Fun~ :3
are there any eu dm’s with a new campaign?

Ok I was curious about a Stargate or Star Trek related dnd server or campaign...
can you actually play in the dnd beyond site? not just create characters there?
What do you mean by “actually play”? What specifically are you looking for?
i think he means running the actual campaign through dnd beyond? or maybe atleast fights?
You’ll probably find it difficult to find a D&D game set in a Star Trek or Stargate universe. D&D appeals to certain fantasies (I.e. high fantasy) and normally doesn’t do (or try to do) Sci Fi. You might have better luck trying a different TTRPG that deals with Sci Fi themes like Starfinder, but any further recommendations would need to be discussed in #non-dnd-topics
hello everybody! im super excited to start playing dnd tho i have no expreience and dont know the rules. is it possible that anyone here can teach me and maybe play with me? disclaimer: im not 18+

Ok no worries still learning the ins and outs of this server n.n
Can someone explain to me how cantrips, their slots, spells and spell slots work for warlocks?
Cantrips are basically spells that are simple enough and do not cost a spell slot. You can just cast them basically whenever
In 2014 version, Warlocks have Pact slots, which differ from other classes' spell slots in that warlocks only have slots of specific level, for example, a 3rd level warlock has two 2nd level spell slots, and all of their spells (except cantrips) are cast at that level
Thank you xd

Hellooo, I’m still fairly new and even if I’ve been able to do my own charachter sheets for a while now. (I’ve only done like.. 2 before) I still struggle, any tips?
is there a way to make a homebrew character in free version of beyond
try dnd beyond
Where exactly do you get stuck?
It's pretty user friendly i think but anyone here would be happy to help with dnd beyond
You can create your own homebrew without a subscription.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew
Mostly in the items and such. For some reason it gets me stuck though I gotta look at the sheet I’m working on right now.
Maybe the stats? The stats confuse me due to all the different ways that you can see the dices-
But you’d need a subscription to use any publicly-shared homebrew.
Your starting items are based on your class and background, sometimes with limited A-B choices.
Good thing is master sub is less than 5 dollars
But you pretty much just write down what it says.
Yes I see
There’s three main ways to determine ability scores, one of which does involve dice.
Which you should use is a question to ask your DM.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Oh yeah, the saving throws and Skill points I forgot how to get those.
Each of those is associated with an ability.
Strength saving throws and Athletics checks both use Strength, for example.
So for every one of those, you’r write down the relevant ability modifier.
If you have +3 Strength, you’d write +3 for Strength saves and Athletics checks.
Then for any that you’re proficient in, you add your proficiency bonus as well.
Huh-
A level 1 character has a proficiency bonus of +2.
So if you were proficient with Strength saves, you’d add that +2 PB to your +3 Strength for a total of +5 on Strength saves.
there's also a bunch of helpful stuff on youtube about filling out a character sheet
I might look into that, this is twisting and turning my brain rahh
The new Free Rules does a really good job of walking you through the steps, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
I’ll look at that right now thank you
Hi
My friend REALLY wants me to play end with her, I have NO IDEA how to play, but she helped me make a character. So what do I do?
Is your friend planning to show you how to play? That's what I would do if I invited someone.
There's a tonne of short (and long) guides on youtube about how the game actually works (dw it's simpler than it seems), that would be a good place to start
also, the best way to get used to how everything works is to play, and not worry too much about not being used to the game while you're new. I've just introduced my gf to D&D and she feels the same way, but your DM wont mind
Hello people, I’m new to trying to get into the DnD world I don’t know where to start so any advice would be appreciated thanks

She said she was too lazy 😑
Sounds fun! Thanks to everyone who explained! :)
Oof, that's rough. #learn-to-play and the bot post a few lines up will be helpful for getting you familiar with some of the game. The linked videos also help! If you don't understand it, you can ask here or have questions ready for when you actually get to the table!
hello, how do I interpret attack moves from monster stat blocks for example: Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d6 + 10) slashing damage.
where it says Hit: 17 (2d6 + 10) slashing damage. does this mean the attack is 17+2d6+10 or does this mean the attack is a 17 to hit even though it already said that before hand? i am taking this from DDB Ancient red dragon just for an example
the 17 in "hit 17" is just the average of that dice roll (I think)
The 17 is the average if you don't want to roll dice for damage. Otherwise, you roll 2d6 and add 10.
The +17 to hit is when you roll the dice to determine if the attack even connects.
GOTCHA thank you guys i was just curious. probably a bad stat block to read being that they are the same number and it was confusing
That would be confusing, for sure!
+17 to hit is massive
Thats uh
...
....
Thats endgame bonuses right there.
Im staying down here at level 3 tyvm 😄
3? Im terrified thatll give the dm a chance to even roll for it. Im staying at level 1.
So like, how do I play
Check #learn-to-play for a bunch of useful resources
hello
What’s a good class for beginners
Any class you're excited to play. But fighter, rogue, monk, and barbarian have the least mechanical complexity.
That was fast! What kinds?
Tabaxi Druid, Goblin Rogue and a Human Ranger (idk if you was asking me)

hi
Hello, I’m very much new, I’ve been playing boulders gate three, and I really like the game. I also seen some stuff on D n D on YouTube, I really want to learn how to play as a first time player.
Welcome to the hobby! We have a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages of this channel as well as #learn-to-play that help you getting started
Thank you!
Is there a character creator for the server? I’ve looked around, maybe I’m just missing it
We don’t actually host games on the server but you can check out DnDBeyond’s online character sheet tools. The free tier will let you use the free basic rules for creating up to 6 characters.
Awesome, thank you!
hello, someone spanish?
Per server rules, we only allow English to be used on this server. You could check #looking-for-community for servers that may have Spanish-speaking channels.
Anyone need a player for Thier games? I'm new tho.
please visit #looking-for-players to see if DMs have openings at their tables.. if you want to learn how to make a post yourself (looking for dm) check out #find-a-game
Can anyone help. I'm just starting and I don't understand how to play I have the starter kit and essentials set
How far have you got with the book?
About half
are there things you have read so far that you find confusing? we can be a better help if we know where to start 🙂

Thank you this helped me
Also how do I keep track of health or current inventory
As a Player? That info will be on your character sheet. If it’s physical you’ll typically just scribble it down

I feel like it’s very difficult to find POC D&D games
At least so far, cause I feel like all the games I’ve been a part of have been very much of the same
D&D is for everyone so I’m not sure why you need specifically a POC only game. Unless you’re dealing with POC topics that are best handled in such a group/setting.
Well in the games I’ve been in, topics do come up that reference POC struggles and it feels kinda… weird? Especially being the only person with that background
And never said POC only, just a mix of people and not me or one other person being the outlier
Ah yeah that could be a weird situation to be in. You can raise it as an issue with the group you’re playing in but I also understand that most folks don’t want to have to do all that emotional labor to help explain things.
hello i am new and i already have made a chrecter and a class im a beginner and have some knowledge of the game
so if someone would like to help it would be appreciated
If you’re looking for a game/group to join, you can check out LFG channels. Read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use those channels
ok thank you
I've come to realise that dnd is a western hobby, cause how are there no games happening at realistic time periods in IST .
Me and my friend have been looking for a game for months.
Just a standard dnd game, 50 rp 50 combat but honestly the splits dont even have to matter
I just dont want to wake up at 5 in the morning to play, I just want to play like everyone else .
its funny, to me the whole situation is like playing basketball and then being forced to realise its a tall persons game
sure you could get good, but talent is talent
I could want to play dnd , but I can never play it like everyone else does
because I am in India, and timezones are terrible
alright, thats the rant, bye
Hii, I'm super new. This year I discovered I love fantasy books, and now I'm starting to think d&d might be my thing too. I have just joined this, so I don't have any questions yet. But I just want to say, hello everyone, I hope you are all good.
Welcome! Fantasy novels definitely got me into dnd as well, well I could thank my cousin for introducing me and running games for us. I hope you enjoy it as well! It's a really fun hobby 😃
Hii, thank you so much! What books are your favourites? I've read the tiktok ones hahaha Fourth wing, acotar, also started throne of glass. Kind of wanting to read 11/22/63
Originally Dragonlance was my favorite series when i first got into books but lately I love brandon sandersons books like the stormlight archives and mistborn. I have a huge list of books on the list to read, too many to name lol
I definitely want to read Magician: apprentice and the rest of those books by Raymond e. Feist and also the dragonbone chair by tad williams
Dragon bone chair is a fantastic read
Tad Williams can paint a scene on the readers mind like few other authors his descriptions of hayholt castle still linger in my mind and inspire the way i describe scenes to my players
I heard it was slow to start but I'm really looking forward to reading it. It's a lot though the last book was two large books into one lol
Yeah! I'm sure he will become one of my favorite Authors
I think I'll bump it to the top of the list to be read
As someone that loves half page descriptions of rooms even i can vouch that it is quite slow
But once you leave the castle it picks up, and that is to say none of it is bad it still lives within my mind in good clarity it just will deter the impatient reader
Well thanks you got me excited to read it, I'll let you know how it goes lol
Hope you enjoy it as much as i did!
