Per session? About 3-6 hours in my experience. Campaigns are usually once a week and can last anywhere from a few months to years. However, there are shorter form games like "one-shots" which are typically 1 session only
Also I replied to another user above with a lot of useful resources if you wanted some help getting started
i am nearing the holidays from where i live but i still have school to do and that
I would definitely recommend searching for one-shots then, especially if you don't think you can commit to a longer-form campaign
hey the find a game is a little confusing
is there a place i can just slide in and join a someones session before they have started
@wheat crystal
I've heard that before haha. The channel is part directory, part instruction sheet for making your own post with the commands at the bottom.
In terms of joining a game, you'd usually have to apply to a group/DM's game which may take some time (there are significantly more players than DMs out there). If you wanted you can go straight to #looking-for-players and start browsing/commenting on people's posts.
Also don't be afraid to ask if they accept newbies, most groups do even if they don't explicitly say it, so it's always good to ask
Well I am completely new to the likes of DnD in general (Haven't played baldur's gate 3 either)
But I have heard of it before and I am really interested in playing it

I'm brand new woooo
HI everyone! I'm brand new to Dnd but increasingly more and more interested. I would love to meet other newcomers and maybe get to joining a group to play my first adventure!
Folk are about, but they tend to respond to questions and directly phrased prompts. What's on your mind?
Yo guys I'm pretty new to dnd but I'm playing a plasmoid warlock hexblade and it seems very confusing and idk how to organise my character sheet or anything can anyone help pls

Welcome! The bot post above has some very helpful links that can get you started. The Free Rules linked above has a very helpful guide in chapter 2 about how to fill out a character sheet.
Tysm
Same @tardy creek
I am fairly familiar with DnD conceptually, but am struggling to find a group willing to start from the beginning with me and a DM with patience. any of those around? I envisioned one or two Game sessions per month, so not a huge commitment, but for escape and fun.
Hi I've been wanting to get into DND but I just don't know enough about that so I came here to try and learn
Check the bot post a few lines up!
Oh ok
I would recommend starting with Adventures League.
Adventurers League
- You can learn all about it here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- It provides a low barrier for entry. Players just commit to a single session at a time. Usually 2-4 hours.
- The adventures for level 1 characters are often designed to teach you basics of play.
- As you play, you'll discover what types of players and dungeon master you gravitate towards.
- You'll have a higher chance of forming a long lasting group by reaching out to people you have establish history with through these independent play sessions.
- Its drop-in play style provide players with the flexibility to fit different schedules and availability.
Ive never played dnd once but would love to learn
#learn-to-play has a great list of resources and advice for new players
If you run into any trouble understanding anything as you learn it feel free to hit up this text channel with your questions 🙂
I'm in the same boat but all the posts on find a game seem to be for seasoned players
Unless a post specifically says it is looking for experienced players, I wouldn't assume they are. Most tables in my experience are fine with taking on newbies so long as you are honest about your experience, and are open to learning
I went through a few but they all are currently filled. Fair enough, reading through them seemed pretty advanced.
I'll keep an eye out, thanks 🙂
Yeah finding a game usually takes a while. If you like, you can spread your net out and apply for tables in a few different places at once to speed up the process
Will keep that in mind, thank you!

Hey, I’ve never played DnD once but I’ve seen videos and stuff and I really really like it, but I don’t have a group or a party, what should I do?? 😔
First read through the free basic rules, then try your hand at making a character (just to learn how it's done), then find a group to play with (can take some time to find the right group so do be patient).
But if you're ready to find a group, read #find-a-game carefully
adventurers league is very helpful for new players looking for games built to teach them how to play
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Hello there
I'm new to DnD and i am starting a campaign with some of my buddies, however i'm having a hell of a time creating a story. It's all gonna be online somehow. Anybody like using foundryvtt for their campaigns? Any pointers to make it a little more, i dunno, organized in terms of creating a story?
are you DMing?
I made a character for myself based on my BG3 character and i have an idea how that is done, and how gameplay is done. my bro loves this stuff so he has been helpful with all of thatr
yeah lol it's just me and my buddies
Originally i thought about having it take place in Elder Scrolls but i dunno, i like a lot of the DnD kits online
i am willing to go down a very deep rabbit hole to the underdark for this
i would highly recommend running a pre-written adventure, preferably one with great reviews, as your first adventure you run. writing your own story on top of learning the game is too much to reasonably put on yourself without risking burnout.
are there any specific settings or themes you feel strongly inspired by?
What do you mean? I'm absolute shit at story telling, by the way LOL
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
And feel free to hit up #dm-discussion with any DM topic questions
hell yeah thanks for this
well like, where would you like the campaign to take place? and what sort of challenges or monsters do you feel inspired to run?
Cool cool. So I'm heavily inspired by the Elder Scrolls. Started with Skyrim in 2011. That's when I had an interest in DnD, but never had the chance to play due to lack of friends, lack of club, and being deaf (so audio chat sucks)
So I was originally gonna do something similar to Skyrim, where you have to save the world from the dragons from taking over
But I want to follow the 5e format and include those spells and features in the story as well
DMing allows me to be in control of narration, which i dont need to rely on hearing as much if that makes sense
if you’re drawn to the more nordic aspects of skyrim, with frozen terrain and norse inspiration, i would recommend Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden
if you like dragons, i would recommend Tyranny of Dragons.
both of these are popular official campaigns that you can purchase digitally or physically.
Sweet, I appreciate this! I actually was looking at Tyranny of Dragons earlier.
ToD is great, and a great value for how much you get for its bundle price.
Do you have a preference of software to use, like FoundryVTT? I've been looking at that lately, but i know Roll20 and DNDBeyond are options
I'm going to gently nudge any future DM-discussion chatter to #dm-discussion as this channel is for new to D&D folks to learn the core game rules and mechanics.
lol sorry, i'll move over there
When was someone going to tell me that guiding bolt is possibly the most broken spell of all time? 4d6 at level one and 8d6 at level one with a crit with a maximum possible dice count of 26d6????
Yeah it has the potential to do a lot of damage, but that is offset by the chance to completely wiff your shot
It has + 4 to hit and advantage if you have already hit that enemy once
divine soul sorc can twinned spell it too
😏
True
it’s also radiant damage, arguably the second best damage in the game
Yeah if nobody else attacks the target first, then you could make use of the advantage for a follow up. You will be using lots of spell slots though
When considering the average damage of an effect that rides on an attack roll, its best to multiply the average roll by 0.65, to account for a 65/45 chance of hitting/missing
If you can get advantage, thats more like 80/20 though
And by the spell’s description if you hit the first one you get advantage on the second one
You need to choose two different targets for a twinned-cast spell unfortunately
can’t target the same creature with twinned unfortunately
Oh I only play cleric so I didn’t know that
try sorcerer it’s so good
you don’t know true joy until you experience the dopamine excellence that is quickened mind sliver
quickened mind sliver + heightened hold monster 🤌
hai again, i didnt know where to ask this question so ill start here and maybe get some help...or be directed where to go...here's my question, "at what level and what spell can a cleric cure a disease like cancer?" my character is currently lvl 4 (1 in divine soul scorcerer and 3 peace domain cleric)
I'm actually looking to try out a multi-classed dragonborn cleric/sorcerer
sweet i went the autognome route n.n
i went divine soul to get silvery barbs and the bane spell to help my party n.n
my cleric got me bless too...so it helps to have options(im learning all this stuff first hand!)
I think that the dragonborn sorcerer is a smart character, plus you get magic wings at later levels. I also have some homebrew ideas that I'd like to try out: in short light crossbow healing bolts
oooh imagine if you had an armor artificer in your party and made you rocket boots n.n you'd be sooo fast n.n
noice!!! i play another game that allows you to deal damage to enemies and then translate that damage to healing your allies n.n if i could figure that out id do that lol
level 11, i would rule the spell Heal can cure cancer.
The crossbow bolts, I created them on DND beyond, do a small amount of damage on impact, but also release healing spells like 'Mending' cause they've been enchanted; I also decided to give them a slight nerf, e.g if you miss your ally and hit a wall you have to roll 1d6 on a 5-6 the bolt shatters, 3-4 the shaft breaks but leaves some parts behind, 1-2 the bolt drops to the ground intact.
Heal
6 evocation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Target: A creature that you can see within range
Components: V S
Duration: Instantaneous
Classes: Cleric, Druid
Choose a creature that you can see within range. A surge of positive energy washes through the creature, causing it to regain 70 hit points. This spell also ends blindness, deafness, and any diseases affecting the target. This spell has no effect on constructs or undead.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 7th level or higher, the amount of Healing increases by 10 for each slot level above 6th.
or like little green arrow(animated) a little arrow with a boxing glove that has a jar inside that has the splash on version of a healing potion(if that exists) when it hits itll break and heal n.n
oh okies coolio.
Can anyone explain how to play DnD?

I am currently trying to "figure out" the Adventurers League. I had a few people message me it's a good place to start.
I am new to DnD and don't have / know anyone who is patient enough while a newb learns the ropes. I also don't have a lot of time to commit monthly, so it's whenever I can make the time - AL was recommended.
So, as a new player I am interested in the original gameplay, character creation and growth and all else that comes with it, but I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to a weekly adventure - once a month is more palatable at this time in my schedule.
I have created a character, but have to learn the mechanics of playing
In my experience fortnightly games are more common than weekly games, I'm sure you'll find a table out there that is able to fit to a less frequent schedule
That's good to hear. I will be patient and keep searching.
Most AL games are actually just one-shots in my experience
I dont believe they were asking about AL?
well, maybe one shot, but it would help me get the mechanics down, right?
I was replying to this
appologies
And if they're talking about the special D&D 2024 adventure Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn, that adventure isn't even remotely AL legal. But was a promotional event for the new book that probably would have been good for new players
So it is worth keeping an eye out for things like that.
Got it, thank you.
Just be aware that something being a WotC event doesn't necessarily make it AL legal, which can matter if you are interested in doing organized play games more regularly
100%, AL is a great way to get started ime. Its how I began and eventually got to know a few of the players at my local AL well enough to start a proper home campaign with them
I play by AL rules regardless, but one of my groups is essentially just a home game with that framework
We've been playing together for like 5 years at this point
So AL store games can definitely be a good way to play with a bunch of different people and see who you click with, whether you stick with those rules or not. Since they do tend toward one-shots.
To be honest, it's a bit of a pet peeve that Wizards sponsored new player events often aren't AL legal
Regardless, checking local games stores to see if they do have events or a regular night can be a good way to start
That's what I did way back when. Just showed up for Wednesday AL night and said help
Thanks.
I still have the character they handed me. They're level 20 now 😁
It may not be true for every store, but if they've got a set community they may have pregens and/or people willing to help you build characters/explain the rules as well
You can try the Wizard's store locator, but it's honestly pretty out of date/incomplete. So I'd recommend just checking websites and calling around. You can also see if there's any kind of regional RPG meetup that can point you in the right direction, if you're looking for in person games
Hi! Im Baldino. I am new to D&D. I did a one off awhile ago and had tons of fun with it but the group I played with only wanted to try it and never wanted to do it again. I made a warforged barbarian and after the one off made an aarakocra cleric in hopes of doing a campaign. Since playing that one off i've had the itch to play with others and learn. I was wondering if anyone could help me and guide me on what i need to do.

hello I am new to D&D and would like to find someone willing to help me and my 2 friends get started, we have always been interested in starting a dnd world but never got anyone to help us learn the ropes. If anyone is willing to help us learn DM ME
I'm new-ish to DnD and want to build a character, but I have no clue what are standard e5 rules and what is some other edition/expansion/release (idk what they're called). I want to make a winged tiefling - are they allowed in e5?
Winged tieflings are yep. They're from Sword Coast Adventuring Guide and are a 'variant' meaning their stats replace normal 2014 Tiefling stats. You may need DM permission to play one.
Thank you!!
So if I was to play Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, winged tieflings would be acceptable? Just confirming because I don't know if the different handbooks have different rules or if the alter the rules of every game
it'd still be under DM discretion. To my knowledge, there aren't any modules that necessarily ban anything
Do characters with Dark vision with a torch, see the dim light past the 20ft radius of a torch still see it as dim light and not bright light?

And search widely. There are lots of options out there.
Should I get and read the new dm guide? JW because I’ve been recommended it and wanted to start dm’ng for siblings or some family
The 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide doesn't come out until November. The new book that just came out is the Player's Handbook. That being said, the Player's Handbook has most of the vital rules for how the game works, so its important for a DM to have one too
Hello, new newcomer here :3
Are there any there any checkboxes I should fill out before entering a group?owo
ok lets not get freaky
Well is there a to do list?owo
Not specifically. The best place to start will be to learn the rules. You don't have to memorize everything, but understanding the basics definitely helps the game run smoother.

The bot post above has many helpful resources that can get you started
In general? Glance through the rules, make a character or two for practice.
Hello all! Is there a pre-written adventure/campaign that starts at level 5? The group I DM for is finishing LMoP and they want to continue with their characters. I'm a terrible writer, so I need a book to work from.
Dungeon of the Mad Mage starts at 5, I think.
Spelljammer: Adventures in Space does, too.
Awesome, thank you!
Ok thanks
Any of the anthology books like Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel or Keys From The Golden Vault could just pick up at level 5.
Lost Mines of Phandelvor actually has a 2nd half. The full book is called "Phandelvor and Below: The Shattered Obelisk" It came out earlier this year
If you wanted to stick to the same region, there's also Dragon of Icespire Peak's digital-only followups, starting with Storm Lord's Wrath.
But that starts at level 7.
Actually, that's exactly what I would like to do.
I bought the original LMoP several years ago, pre-pandemic, and didn't know if it was worth getting the updated one.
The full adventure goes to level 12, and continues with the same world, story, and characters
There were some mild changes in the earlier chapters to help set up what now follows, but you'd be safe to jump right in regardless.
I've never played LMoP or the full version, so IDK much about it, but if your players enjoyed the adventure so far, its just more of that. If you think they're looking for a change of pace though, it also can't hurt to change things up
Oh that's fantastic!
They're looking to keep it about the same. I've asked whether they'd like to change anything, but all agree they like how things are. This sounds perfect.
Great! Glad there was such an easy solution for you
Appreciate the help!
Chandelier and below goes all the way to 12? Damn
How do I get the "New player" tag off of my name 😅
Ah ha! Thanks 🙂

You should check out the rules and/or #learn-to-play. Once you've gotten the gist of them, you can find a group (see #find-a-game). But D&D is rarely a pick-up-and-play sort of deal; it requires coordinating schedules, checking for compatibility, and the like.
Pls Help me I have never played D&D and i want to learn how to play where can i do that?
#learn-to-play and the rules linked above should help!
Thank you,3
I need to send images bruh
I don’t know how to calculate my modifiers, skills and saving throws
Have you checked out the rules yet?
How do I post a lfg

How do I post one. I can't text in the looking for players thread.

Where in the 2014 book can I see the damage/distance of my weapons?
any recommended adventures similar to Curse of Strahd?
Soo my PC has find familiar which he uses to summon a poison frog, looking at the stat block for lil guy he does 2d6 when physically attacked, does that mean he can make contact to deal 2d6 or only when he is attacked?
In the weapon tables, damage will be listed and all melee weapons have 5ft range unless they have the reach property, range weapons will show the ranges
(yes I know they cannot "attack" but they can move, yes?)
I can’t find it though it just says prices lol
Found it
Was right infront if me 😂
👍
How do I calculate my armour class then I’ve completed it
10+dex modifier+any armor/shields I believe
what kind of armor are you wearing
sounds right yeah
11 base ac from armor, then add your dex modifier
light armor is: armor + dex mod
medium : armor + dex mod (up to +2 from dex)
Heavy: just armor
right what attack bonus would a long bow have?
Dex mod plus proficiency
2+2
Yup
4, so it would be 1d8+2/p +4?
Attack d20+4 damage d8+2
Ahhhh
What class are you?
Ranger
Did you take a fighting style?
Level 1
I’m going down the archery style though
like wants to be the best shot in the realm
My dex is 15 😭
Before or after racial mods?
I’m assuming after bc I’ve finished
Or background mods if using new rules
Depending on the ruleset, you may be able to move those around, or pick a different background that works better for you
Idk my character is pretty well rounded at level 1
8 strength, 15 dex, 11 con, 12 intelligence, 15 wis and 14 charisma
Hmm, with point buy that would have to be post bonus stat mods. Can you tell what they were put on? Cause it still may be a good idea to move some points around
At minimum I'd suggest 12 Con over 12 Int
Rolled, and not to worry at this stage. If they get to level 4 they can even things up with an ASI.
um... hello.
Welcome!
yes, thank you. my apologies, i'm slightly nervous about this. i am new and just made my character two nights ago. i was really looking forward to being in this community to learn a whole new style of playing together as well as this communities mechanics. that all to say, i hope i am of no burden and i may be welcomes to possibly join a game sometime soon.

Does that answer the question you were asking?
sorta eheh im aware of the #learn-to-play and i need to read what i already havent, im looking sorta for ppl to play with while getting acquinted to the game if possible, i read some of the rules and also fiddled with chara sheets but i think i would learn better "playing" but i dont want to mess other ppls games and experiences, so im kinda looking for a "safe spot" to do so. i appreacite the anwser tho ill check the thread!
Soo my PC has find familiar which he uses to summon a poison frog, looking at the stat block for lil guy he does 2d6 when physically attacked, does that mean he can make contact to deal 2d6 or only when he is attacked?
(yes I know they cannot "attack" but they can move, yes?)
I don't think poison frog is a viable form for Find Familiar.
Frog is an option, why would a variant not be allowed?
Ah, challenge rating of 0 perhaps
Because spells and abilities do what they say they do. If poison frog isn't listed as an option, it's not an option.
Nope, poison frog has a CR-0
It seems to fit all current requirements to be summoned
Could you link to the D&D Beyond page with the statblock? I don't see it myself.
It seems the stat block I'm using (approved by DM) is homebrew, I hadn't noticed at the time. Here's the block
That is not official, and thus outside of RAW. That's something for the DM to decide.
Rules as Written.
Essentially, homebrewing the game makes it hard to discuss how a thing "works." So if there are no official/established rules, it's on the DM to rule appropriately.
Hadn't even realized it was homebrew until right now if I'm being honest, just googled "poison dart frog 5e" and clicked first result 😂 wouldn't have even asked if I noticed
Question: what's the point of #optimization? Is it just to pure DPS your PC? Or some other purpose
#learn-to-play is a great place to start (and reading through the free basic rules)
Thx!
Hey! I just got started playing D&D like 2-3weeks ago and I wanted to know how you make your character and set your stats and would like to know any tips about D&D.
Note: I sorta have an Idea for what my character is just don't know how to set the stats.
The Free Rules do a good job of walking through the steps for creating a character.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
But for stats, have you got your ability scores yet?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
If I cast Minor Illusion to create a sound, does it have to be something my character has heard before? Could I perhaps create the sound of my party member's father's voice who I've never met? I imagine not, but the description doesn't seem to be this precise
You'd probably have to ask your DM. (I don't think I'd allow it.)
Eh, maybe I would.
It literally says it can be someone else's voice, and doesn't state it has to be someone you've met.
The same with Image. I imagine this is busted if say... we wanted to see what the hidden BBEG look/sounded like

You have a few options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons) just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo linked above.
- Or read through #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the rules linked above.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos linked above (or WASD20's Rules School).
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
You would only be recreating your mental image of the villain. You might think that the villain is a thin human, but he might actually be a muscular dwarf.
Hi! I’m brand new to role playing and dnd, and I’m creating my first character. I know what race and class I want to play, and I have a basic idea for a backstory. Are there any resources that I can look at to help me flesh things out?
Sup am new to dnd i just bought an essientials kit
Besides the free basic rules or the Players Handbook? You could chat about your character ideas with folks in #character-discussion if you want to bounce ideas off folks.
As for backstories, I'd suggest keeping it short and sweet bullet points:
- Where does your character come from? (e.g. how is it connected to your DM's game setting)
- What did they do before becoming an adventurer? (e.g. tie your character background to the game setting)
- Why did your character start adventuring? (e.g. why did your character decide to take on adventuring rather than normal mundane stuff?)
Work with your DM and group to help make sure your backstory and character concept will work well for the game setting and type of D&D game the group is playing (fun vs serious, heroic fantasy vs gritty dark, etc.)
the 2024 handbook compiles everything nicely
about 350 pages long
Bruh that ain't a handbook, that's a whole encyclopedia
Hello all. New to D&D Playing 3.5 and wondering about starting a business like a shop. I playing a Rogue level 6. I would like my Team to be able to make wands, potion, scrolls, as well to sell items that we make and find. trying to figure out how it all works, and how specialist and cohort to work in the business.

Hi! I'm new to DnD and wanted to know if it's possible to play with just two people?
I don't really have friends to play with but my partner is interested in playing with me so 😅
Yes it’s do able takes a bit of work to balance
You could play as the main PC and have some sidekicks to aid in combat
Hello, I have a question. When I use the martial arts die with a 2024 monk (1d6) for a dagger (1d4). Is it the 1d6+dex modifier for damage rolls, or just 1d6
Hey everyone! I'm new to DnD and have played a bit during college, but I'm looking to join a group on Discord. If anyone has space, I'd love to jump in! Thanks so much, and I hope you all have an amazing day!
Plus dex
Sup im new to dnd and im looking for people to guide me and play with
As Enoki said, +dex.
It's taking the 1d4+mod and saying replace the d4 in that with a d6.
Well, yes, the purpose of the PHB is to be a reference book where you can look rules up. You don’t have to read cover to cover. In other news, I’m currently reading the 2024 PHB cover to cover 😅
pretty much a hand book for someone with large hands
Hello, I'm new here and new to D&D
New here as well! And to dnd too ngl- Never played before and my knowledge is limited, but I trult want to learn and play. I'd be really glad if someone could help me out in the learning part

We also have #learn-to-play but above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and species and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
For character sheets you can use the printable/ editable character sheets from WotC or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Note that on dndbeyond your access to options will be limited to the free access races and creatures unless you purchase more, or homebrew. Feel free to ask here if confused by anything.
Then it's finding a game. You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to post if the LFG channels here but there are also other places to look into, including Adventure League (official organised play) other platform's LFG (Like roll20, r/lfg on reddit) so on. Or find an in person game by kidnapping getting together some friends or looking into local game shops.
just to optimize a character
obviously that is largely to do with dpr but its also survivability, utility etc
it seemed big for me too, but parts of it are also just straight yapping
you can just read the definitions and functionalities
that'll be faster
its mostly classes
Think of it a bit like a cookbook.
No one expects you to read every single recipe and page of a cookbook before ever making a single dish. But it's helpful to read some of the general terms and rules (Like combat, what things mean) and at least the recipe you're using (In this case, the character you're making- their class abilities and so on).
Everything else you can get to when you get to it.
And usually a better skill than trying to memorise is it, is knowing how to look things up.
This is true. My 2014 phb to this day has the original tabs I put in it for the pages I found myself looking for a lot
Hello is there campaign that is friendly to new comers as I've taken a massive interest and never played before

They're set up as separate classes.
If you want to use the 2014 fighter, you'll need to select the one farther down the page.

Hello
Welcome! To start, give the free rules a read. They're in the bot post just above yours!
DnD unfortunately does involve a lot of reading and a lot of rules! Thankfully there are plenty of resources available. That same bot post has links to some helpful videos if you prefer to learn that way!
yo im new can someone explain the roles to me?
hello Dungeons and Dragon noob here, always wanted to play the tabletop but got no friends to play with, so i got desperate and came here
Ok, couple of questions to know if i wanna read it at all.
- DnD involves a lot of acting/dialogue in character right?
- Soo… All the game sessions are long as shit?
- English is not my first language, I’m really good at it, i can improv, make jokes and act. Do I need to learn a lot of board game terms? Never played anything over the board in English
- You don't need to act or speak in character to play DnD, but many people do. For example, it's perfectly fine to say "My character Bob asks the King if he's seen the evil wizard." instead of acting the conversation out in character.
- Your average DnD session will last 2-5 hours, depending on the table.
me 2 on the english part, is it crucial to be super fluent cuz i do get stuck sometimes
No I would want to act, that’s the fun part, no?)
- DnD does have quite a few terms, but how many you actually need to know to get your meaning across may differ from time to time.
That’s why I asked, cause if it’s just turn after turn without any in character conversations I probably wouldn’t find that too fun
Your skill requirement in English also depends on the group you're playing with. Most folks on this server play in English because it's an English server, but there may be groups that play entirely in your native language!
@white valve u wanna try playin a game sometime?
Dnd isn’t big in Russia tho lol)
How the group handles this can differ from group to group. Some might care more about deep character interactions, and others might not. It's all about finding the right one!
I would, but it’s hard to find 3 to5 hours lol
You might be surprised! You're definitely not the only person who's asked about Russian games here before.
ig no one asked abt hebrew games huh
You might also be interested in text-based games in which people can participate at their leisure.
That sounds like no fun tho
I disagree, but it's not for everyone. I just mention it as another option.
I would want to be a bard since im a guitar player and a singer, and that doesn’t work in text too well
i am so lost wth is a bard
A musician class
An entertainer sort.
I guess
The classes are described here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
I’ve seen some yt shorts animations by Legends of avantris, looked like fun, so I decided to try for myself
But length of the games are too much, I guess I should try and find russian dnd servers, so at least the game times would be good for me
which one of these is a sword guy
Lol
good luck dud
Several can be, but fighter would probably be most "sword guy."
whats a champion
Each class gets a subclass, which is a specialization. So you could have the same class in the party but different subclasses to differentiate what each can do.
ooh thats cool
looks very time consuming tho
You don't have to learn everything all at once, and not every chapter is relevant. Like for classes, you only need to read the one you want to play!
are there dms that do beginner plays cuz i rly wanna play and learn from the game not read alat
It's usually considered rude to expect a DM to explain the entire game to you. It is a lot of rules, and because of that it's not polite to give that effort to someone else and expect them to do the hard work for you
You could check out the explainer videos out there, but yeah, reading is part of the hobby. And ditto what Dosh said above.
any tips about playing a paladin? its my first time playing the class and i dont know what to expect from them
About combat efficiency or role-playing?
#character-discussion will probably help. And do specify whether you're playing 2014 or 2024.
How do you rule about hitting the cover that your target hides behind?
thank you
Depends on how much the cover hides them, hiding behind half cover is a +2 to ac and dex saves, 3 quarters is +5 and if it completely covers them then they can't be targeted
RAW states that if someone hides behind half-cover, the target has a bonus to AC
But if it hides behind something fragile, volatile or another creature, that might be your ally, there's a chance your attack hits the cover
That might be up to the DM when it hits unless it's specified otherwise
I'm the DM, that's why I'm asking)
You've seen #dm-discussion?
Probably not, but that'll be a question for your DM.
As written: no
If your DM says yes: yes
I don't know if there's a spefic rule that specifies when it'll happen so my guess is whenever you feel like it or if they miss by a long shot lol
Also, by RAW, if I want to shoot enemy archer and there's a mosh pit of tens of medium-sized melee combatants in-between, it's still counts as a half cover because covers don't stack?
Is it ok to rule otherwise?
You can ask in #dm-discussion for advice on how to rule things outside of the written text.
Hlo
hello
can someone help me get into dnd?
Ok, what about the first question?

Looking for a game to learn
i dont think there are beginner friendly games here 😦
also hypothetacly if a lego skeleton was a class what weapon would he have
im thinking a lego dagger but maybe ill give him a huge sword that he cant hold
Weapon? He has plastic claws that are perfect for a monk
wait i need to read what a monk is one sec
that could be cool
also should he be lego size or human sized
Your best bet is to play single session adventures known as one shots.
For that I recommend starting out with D&D’s Adventure League as some adventures are specifically designed to teach new players the game.
This server has a whole section of channels dedicated to Adventures League, including game listings.
ooh how do i find that channel idt its avalible for me
You might be better served in continuing the conversation in #homebrew. This channel is to help folks get acquainted with the game as it's written.
thank u for the help g
I think the best course of action is to start the game using the options already available to you. Despite what many people claim, DnD isn't a game where "you can do anything and be anything". It's got rules and options to follow
chat any tips to roleplay better, and is there any spell combos that are useful?
?tag new roleplaying
That is something is going to depend on first having a DM who would also love a Lego themed adventure.
While you search for a that DM, in the meantime focus on learning the content that is already made in the basic rules.
any tips to rp better, and any spell combos that are useful?
The first part of that question was answered above, via the link in the bot post.
im sorry to interject but did someone say a lego themed dnd adventure
Check that out here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1685-the-lego-group-and-d-d-partner-for-a-dungeons
thats a unique concept
I was lurking thats all
Im kinda dealing with an issue and have no idea how to solve it lol
so been cruising the chats
Is it a D&D issue? Folks might be able to help.
Beginner tips, give yourself character goals that provide the a reason to proactively be part of the campaign.
If a campaign is about traveling all over the world. Having a goal of collecting different ingredients and recipes to one day open a restaurant creates opportunities to role play in that campaign.
Kinda sorta but not exactly per se
Its more of a server issue
#moderator-support is maybe what you're after, then?
If it’s a sever issue #moderator-support could help. If it’s a dicord issue, discord support could help.
Sorry my server. Long story short im a dm of 15 years who kicked up an immersive server but i prefer doing mentorships for new players and dms. So just crusing thourgh trying to see what i can pass on
ig i could make something normal, but whats the fun wit that 😦
Im an idiot when it comes to socializing and branching out
You’ll want to open up channels and roles and select them if you didn’t do so when you first joined the server.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

i asked about spell combos
Oh i did. It gets buried but its there.
A lego Session sounds neat though
the server we have is made for crazy one shot ideas
Spells don't really combo by yourself, they tend to combo most effectively with your friend's spells. And even then, the most interesting combos are at much higher levels.
even more so now that the new ruleset is one slot per turn
You also asked about rp tips 😅. So I answered the rp one within the context of this channel.
For combos, #optimization would be the go to place for solid combos.
alr thanks
can you recommend a pdf app to read PH most comfortably
There are no official PDFs of the books.
Dndbeyond has the books in digital form however.
do i need to be good at math to play?
Can you add and subtract numbers? Sometimes divide them?
Not necessarily. You could always use a calculator if you need one. And many virtual table top systems run the math for you, if you end up using one of those.
It's simple math, so it shouldn't be too complicated.
If you can add 4+3+4 or subtract 8 from 12, you're probably good for the vast majority of math in the early game of DnD.
It's arithmetic, so if you got that down, you'll be good to go!
Not particularly. The math doesn’t go beyond adding and subtracting. Even then there’s tools out there that handle all the math for you like the character sheets on dnd beyond.
hi, i bought the starter set "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle" do you think that i order to learn how to play this is enough or i should look on youtube or buy some core books?
another think that i wanted to ask is if bein the dm the first time you ever play takes down the "magic" of the first game.
thank you, every tip it's appreciated
The free basic rules is enough. You don’t need to spend money to learn to play.
The rules included will give you enough info to play the game, and I've been told that adventure does a decent job of assisting the new DM in running it. Plenty of folks got started with DMing without ever playing. Imagine when the game first came out: someone had to step up and be the DM without experience of being a player!
I'm sure many who started with DMing are still playing the game because it's fun. I don't think there's any magic to ruin on that score because the magic is having fun making up stories with friends!
thank you very much guys
It seems my dnd failed... They either just left or forgot about me...
Finding the right group is always a tough thing with DnD. That's because you're having to coordinate schedules and maintain interest between 5+ people. This is the reason that finding a group can take days or even weeks. It's not something you should expect to be able to plan and play on the same day. Stay strong and keep persevering! The right game for you is out there somewhere, you just need patience.
Sucks that happened. To avoid this it’s best to discuss expectations with a group before joining.
While you’re searching for a long term group, I recommend playing in community campaigns such as Adventurers League or West Marches. #adventurers-league is a great place to learn about adventures league.
I've got to ask: were you actually offering a game of D&D, or a freeform experience that didn't use the rules, settings or themes common to D&D as described in the Basic (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014 ) or Free Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules )?
I have to ask because when you're on the D&D server and offering a game there are certain expectations. When you start off by going outside of those expectations, it's going to make it harder for you to be successful.
Can I somehow play dnd online? Is there any special platform for that?
So, I took a look at your post in #looking-for-players and you had people responding that they wanted to join as recently as this morning. What happened exactly? Did you invite them to a server and then they left, or are they just taking a while to respond to you? Because starting a game of D&D typically takes about a week. If someone said they wanted to join you this morning then didn't respond to you afterwards. That is 100% normal. No one would be expecting to jump into the game literally the moment they said they would join you
i was thinking the same, i am looking to find a new campaign group since i am also very new to dnd
?tag new online
My Internet sorry!! It's delayed!!!
If you're reading this it's delayed... My Internet decided to ruin my life... Sorry that it's delayed...
It doesn't matter they left... Because I took too long... The truth is my timezone is the reason I'm always too slow...
It's still opens...
Ok I'll believe you...
D&D can be played online. The bot post above is a nice guide to that process. But basically, D&D is a game that's played in the imagination. So long as you can communicate with other people and roll dice, you have everything you need to actually play the game. Discord is a popular platform for both voice chats and text chats, which are two different ways to play. Other online tools exist to make online play easier, such as digital character sheets or digital battle maps, but these are optional, and there are various options. It will be up to your group to decide which tools to want to use
I really don't think your connection quality is the issue. I think you're trying to use the phrase "D&D" as a shorthand for role-playing in general rather than trying to learn and engage with the actual game. Help and advice is available, free. But it's difficult to try and help when you don't seem inclined to listen.
Sorry for the mess... I'm such a horrible person... I think I'm too broke to play dnd... I think I must leave...
Buddy, I was responding to someone else. That message wasn't meant to discourage you
I'm literally a deviantartart artist... So I know how to engaged in a story...
Sorry...
Ok this is overwhelming!!!
There’s also lots of free community resources (adventures, tools, etc)
There are also Virtual Tabletops that have a free tier for those who want to play online.
I need to lay down... Sorry for everything...
If you're feeling overwhelmed, try using some of the free guides or rule books that we have available to help you learn
Just take your time, read the free basic rules, listen to folks chatting here, ask specific questions… but no need to try and sprint 1000 kph when a nice leisurely stroll will do

The young age might be a throwback to a lot of experts used to play with old experienced people
Welcome! Check out the bot post above for the free rules! You can let us know if you have any questions as you go through it!
Like is there an interactive tutorial or smth ?
Like a first playthrough just to get everything checked
Ik that sounds cringe 💀 ik
Nice
Does concentrations cost spell slots ?
No
Ok ty
" your browser doesn't support webgl "
Am on my phone tho ( android 13 )
You can find the rules for concentration here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#Concentration
Hmmm am gonna open it on my pc then
The spell that requires concentration requires a spell slot, but after you cast the spell, you can keep concentrating on it for either aslong as the spell lasts or until you drop concentration, either by doing it manually or by failing a concentration check by taking damage
Casting a concentration spell doesn't necessarily require a spell slot.
Guidance, for example, requires concentration, but since it's a cantrip, it never requires a spell slot.
There might be some ritual spells that require concentration or spells earned from feats or some external source
Ah yeah that's actually a great example lol
Ultimately, spell slots and concentration are two separate requirements (among several more) that a spell might possibly have.
You have to meet all of a particular spell's requirements in order to use that spell.

Up next is learning the rules and making a character!
The link to the free rules is listed above
shouldn't be done in practive better then watching videos ?
Different people learn in different ways.
If you've got a group where someone can teach you as you go, that's a great way to do it.
But if you don't have a group yet, then learning as much as you can up front will likely improve your odds of getting accepted to one.
If you want to increase your chances of finding a group though, you should put some effort into learning the rules.
To many DMs, a player who is uninterested in taking the time to learn on their own can be seen as a red flag.
It is possible to learn some things as you go, but you will have a much better experience with the game if you take some time to learn at least the basics of the rules before you start playing. At the very least, you will need a character, so learning the rules on Character Creation is important. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
isn't making a character per playthrough ? or i use the same character for ever
Characters exist per campaign, yes
Just take your time and work through it. There's no rush, and finding a game can take quite a while anyway
You might even have multiple per campaign, if your current one dies without an opportunity for resurrection
ill create batman bc why not lol
You don't have to memorize everything. There will be 4-5 other people at the table with you when you play, to help remind you of things you forget. Plus you can always just pull out the rule book while playing to check on something. You just have to know enough that you feel comfortable getting started and can have the game go somewhat smoothly
Making a character inspired by existing media is actually a great way to get started in the medium! When I had my first campaign there were a few newbies with X-Men inspired characters
i don't have an actual dnd book tho, if u mean the online one then it's good
Yep, the rules are available for free online:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
great!
Its a very common impulse for people to want to start out with a dark and brooding badass character. Just remember, even Batman works with the Justice League. D&D is a team game, so don't make a character that's a loner who refuses to work with other people or doesn't like their teammates
am gonna add ryan gosling's drive character with his car crashing into monsters lmao
lol
am gonna read the rules and ill come back later
To build on this. Tabletop games, such as D&D, are cooperative social games. So anything that contributes to the fun of group play goes a long way.
tbh i didn't understand crap from the d20 tests catagory
i understand the bonuses part ( from the interactive tutorial in the dnd beyond website ) but the others like armor class and saving throws i didn't
Ok so, a "d20 test" just means any time you roll a d20 to see if something you do succeeds or fails. There are 3 types:
- Attack Rolls
- Ability Checks
- Saving Throws
Attack rolls are done when you attack something. Ability Checks are done when you attempt to use your skills and abilities to accomplish a goal. Saving Throws are done to avoid danger or resist a harmful affect.
Does that clarify anything, or is there something you still don’t understand?
Oh that's actually good
I completed reading the first chapter I'll complete the others tommorow
Great! Keep up the good work 😉
Armor class (AC) is used to determine whether an attack hits. If the total of your attack roll equals or exceeds your target's AC, that's a hit; anything less is a miss.
Many groups are fine taking on new to D&D folks particularly if said player shows a willingness to read and learn the rules on their own initiative and if they vibe well with the rest of the group.

While I am biased, I recommend starting out with D&D’s Adventure League because it uses rules as written guidelines and level 1 adventures are specifically designed to teach new players how to play.
This server has an Adventure League section with multiple channels dedicated to it. Stop by #adventurers-league if you want to learn more.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Games listed in #looking-for-players won’t always advertise they are new player friendly. So definitely ask if they are so you don’t miss out on potential play groups.
In the meantime you can start with Adventures League while you search for campaign groups. You can read a bit about it in my earlier post here: #dnd-newcomers message
Start with #learn-to-play and check out the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules).
And don't feel like you have to memorize or read through all of this - as a new player focus on how to create a character and then how to do skill checks, attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throws.
As Undying mentioned, go about this at your own pace. There are a ton of resources available to make things easier.
For example if character creation is overwhelming, it’s perfectly fine to play with a premade character and circle back to character creation at a later time.
Hey everyone. I’m a little confused on something, how do backgrounds buff abilities? When I’m using the character creator on the official app the backgrounds give an option to buff certain abilities. Yet I can’t find any literature about backgrounds doing that. Can someone clarify what I am missing?
You may be referring to this section? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-origins#PartsofaBackground
Yeah exactly that. So then confirmed backgrounds do allow for an ability buff. Thanks
Just to clarify, that’s essentially a new rule for the game.
As of this month.
That’s not how backgrounds worked for the last ten years.
So that’s probably why you’re seeing contradictory information.
With the exception of some homebrew items and lenient DMs

Halloo
Oy! If you're going to rage do it outside the tavern or I'll bill you for any broken furniture!
Can't bill me if I'm gone before the nights over!!
Depending on the size of the bill, I might send bounty hunters to find you!
You say bounty hunters, I call them lunch 😈😈

Yeah, finding a game can often take a long time
The [Find a Game FAQ](#1143223546923986944 message) makes a good comparison between finding a D&D game and dating
ha well, id say its harder. ive got a gf but no dnd group lmao
• thank you! •
A common pitfall players fall into is a taking a passive approach and waiting for people to come to them as opposed to taking a proactive one and reaching out to others looking for players.
How someone tries to find a group is just as important as where someone looks.

Well you didn't clarify what you needed guidance on. 😅
They're also not a bot
Cyborg at the moment, full robot pending.
ngl, this isn't the first time ive seen newcomers be fustrated by getting a copy pasted response. Maybe theres a better way...
I'm sure there is. For now it may be best if I just take a break from the newcomer channel for a while 🫤
Hey those are good links 🤷🏾♂️. I thought you were being helpful. Fact of the matter is some folks want to be talked through all the aspects of d&d but nobody has that sort of time or bandwidth.
Its more helpful to everyone involved if newcomers read the pinned and/or copypasted messages and THEN ask for clarification.
Can't please everyone
yeah im not saying the links aren't useful, I just can't help but wonder that if someone joins a discord server to learn more about a hobby, that they are looking for the human element
For the most part they're good, as evidenced by the vast majority of newbies receiving the links not having any complaints
Exactly. Cant win em all. Its the thought that countd
Hello, I'm quite new to this thing. By new, I mean I have not played this at all. I only watched people do this and it looked like a lot of fun.
Yeah me too but I've only played it once

Those links should help you to get a good look at the basics. And reading the Basic Rules helps a lot as well
Follow the links above for some information. In my opinion most videos or online resources are a bit confusing so the best way to learn is to go to a game and just ask the dungeon master for help if you need it
Not sure if it's even a question: Theoretical situation: Bard with +6 to let's say deception rolls 2, gets 8. Cleric with +0 rolls 18. Something about this doesn't seem right to me to be honest. Replace deception with Arcana / History / etc for more confusion.
I'm not experienced enough in this, but IMO if someone is very proficient in the check that has to be done, one should get advantage for the roll and if someone isn't, that would only make sense if they would do the same with disadvantage. Even then it would be quite weird at times... Sorry for this. I am thinking about this for like past 3 days and can't wrap my head around this
Seems reasonable, but it comes down to your DM to decide.
If your character is a paleontologist, I'd allow them to roll at advantage to see if they know a fossil. If they do or don't still depends on the character and their history.
I'm my DM 😄
Your DM would probably also like to know that he's come up with a good idea, however, not everything needs to be at disadvantage if you're new to itm
I mean yeah... but this would be a homebrew / house rules IMO. I can't seem to understand why this isn't in official rules. Or is it?
yeah... maybe the disadvantage part is a bit too much. But as for other part... DC10 with +0 prof is 50/50. With +5 prof is only 40/60. It kiiinda looks... bad. I mean yeah, if someone has +6 in History, doesn't mean they really have read about certain event in the books. But increasing the chances for 10% only if one is proficient doesn't really make sense to me. Sorry for my rant about this. And thank you for serious approach on your side
No, no don't worry.
It really does come down mostly to player and dm expectations.
If your table likes very technical play and enjoy minmaxing, they will spec their characters to combat your rulings.
If it's something more along the lines of character interpretation, then I'd recommend sometimes not even bothering with a die roll.
If a player's character is super mechanically inclined, they should have no problem figuring out how to fix their toaster. Wouldn't need to roll. If they're trying to fix a motorcycle but they only ever worked on cars, it's worth a roll to see if they can figure it out.
If they then come across a spacecraft, I wouldn't bother rolling unless they are specifically a mechanic for spacecrafts.
Yeah, makes sense! Thank you. Now I got some relief actually
Hardest part of DND, for me, has always been the numbers balancing.
I enjoy lots and lots of little number balances, but come to find out, my party is mostly there to roleplay their characters every week and just enjoy themselves.
Your account says New DM, it will come in time that you'll realize your players enjoy waking up in the tavern.
Agreed! To add on the broader scope of determining when to roll is about the presence of meaningful consequences. In your example Tyler, mathematically the Cleric can beat the Bard but that only happens if there’s a meaningful consequence to having them both roll- and that also means accepting a chance that the Cleric does “win.” Even the best liars sometimes mess up, the best runners trip, etc.
im a new player who needs help learning
The pinned links can help you get started! If you have any additional questions feel free to ask here!
Building off the "win-lose" view.
It's generally not a good idea to pit the players against each other or make them feel like they're battling you as a dm.
There's not really a way to win dnd, but there are ways to lose it.
Don't ever feel like you're always going to have every aspect of your game accounted for, you'll always find a player who can outsmart something you spent hours preparing in minutes of play.
where is the pined links
In the channel pins, or you can also check out #learn-to-play
yeah, I am new DM and ran around 6 one-shot sessions so far. Next I am going to run a lost mines of phandelver for my friends and this is what makes me a bit anxious. As I read the adventure, quite many things came in mind: 1) How tf would new players know that they can do that (certain things)?! 2) 3) 4) - different things. I can give myself a benefit of doubt cause I am not experienced at all but many things do throw me off. Like the one I mentioned. PC with prof rolls 1, PC with -1 prof rolls 20. That is funny, but realistically weird.
thank you
Dumb luck is the best I've got.
But, honestly, if you don't think a player should roll something, don't roll it.
The worst thing you can do is let you player roll to do something impossible, have them roll perfectly, then feel forced to allow it.
And even then, a Nat 20 does NOT mean they are guaranteed a success. That's a common house rule, but it's NOT an official ruling.
yeah, nat20 only has impact on attack rolls. I learned this some time ago. Altho in BG3 all the checks with nat20 were critical success, real 5e is not bg3
I'd recommend a YouTube channel called Dungeon Dudes.
They make a lot of DM advice and could honestly be a good starting place if you're a new dm.
Another thing to remember js that rolls represent the outcome player characters best effort given their skill set. A 20 for a -1 athletics check is going to look a lot different than a 20 for a +6. Its be the difference between “you manage to throw the ball pretty far” and “you make a 3-pointer from past half court”
Oh I already watched quite a bunch of youtube vids about DMing and even about running specific adventures... Still nervous 🙂 And yes, totally agree that some players can figure out weird but very good ways to deal with something... so improvising is one of the biggest things one should learn as a DM
Something else to add to that is the determining reason for a roll in the first place.
What about this action determines the need for a roll?
i cant find a group to play with
Ok the dnd will begin... This time however... Chat only...
"Part of the fun of D&D is interpreting what die rolls mean in the story. The randomness that dice bring often introduces the unexpected: an expert fails, a novice succeeds, or any number of other twists."
It's expected to sometimes happen. But statistically, they have a higher minimum and maximum, it's more likely but not guaranteed to have a better result. That's the fun of it!
Are you looking for an online or offline?
online?
Online D&D can be done, yes. People often use direct messaging or video calls, online virtual tabletops, and online character sheets to do so.
Hold up I saw someone here earlier talking about this
online is what i want to do
My recommendation is to look using as many resources as you feel comfortable with, since this isn’t the only place you can use to find games. A fellow user, iamrazorwing, compiled a list of guide for both offline & online games https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view?usp=drivesdk
Remember if you’re trying to host a PBP game you should post the advertisement in #looking-for-players , or if you’re wanting to join a PBP game you should look for such games specifically
@uncut patrol was talking about running a PbP-style game earlier. Maybe wait for them to post their ad and see if they would take you on.
I'm so sorry I forgot to remove the @ symbol
All good
Thanks for the understanding, dude!
No problemo
what is PbP
Play by Post, typically associated with text based games
So instead of saying aloud "my character does this" you type it in game channel. This removes the need for session times and timezones since everyone chimes in whenever they are free
oh i like it
Probably not the best way to learn but its all I am available for and the demand is high enough lol
There's always a demand for a dm these days lol
can i try
For regular online it can take around 1-2 weeks usually with active searching, mostly to find a game that fits with your schedule 😅
Id be down to take you on a fun little adventure for a couple weeks with it once I figure out what I'm going to do with it
roll20 activity on discord is kinda laggy, isn't it?
There’s other considerations like preferred game style (I.e. ratio of exploration/rp/combat) but the biggest barrier is usually scheduling
@uncut pollen hmu in DM's to remind me, I am the master of brain blanks and will forget lol
Its always the scheduling, especially when playing online with timezones
I’m not terribly familiar with roll20’s discord integration but if you’re having issues you could ask in #third-party for help
scheduling is what prevents my group from playing and I would guess that's probably problem of 99% of the tables
My current party has one person in the four American timezones.
We manage, but it's not easy.
Hence my love of test based games
Oneshots could also be something to do with really messed up scheduling?
I never really run one shots, its typically longer campaigns I run and play in
Yeah I’d say there’s roughly 4 main alternatives to traditional D&D formats
- Adventurer’s League
- One-Shots
- Play-By-Posts
- Westmarches
yall i got a idea for a character
I just notice a bunch of players saying theyre super new and figure maybe someone to run through heaps of those folk and teach them might be handy, and fun too.
Please, do share
Love to hear it
Also feel free to post them in #character-discussion !
a tabaxi rogue with one level in bard that has high dexterity and charisma and uses a rapier as his primary weapon (i wonder who this could be)
i am NOT sorry for whoever gets it 😭🙏
puss in the hat (boots?!)? Or how was that character called in the tale?
ya puss in boots lol
Tabaxi is from Volo's?
Idk it was some thing i randomly picked up from a meme i found of that character (like someone asking to be exactly that) 😭🙏
I spent quite a time watching review videos of wotc campaign books... and they all seemed to agree that there are veeery few campaigns that are really good. At least for year 2024. So I really shifted my curiosity and interest into 3rd party stuff. Is 3rd party content allowed to discuss here? Just because of the topic about tabaxi and cat characters... there's a whole city of cats
i tbh dont know man its a kitty big problem (that sounded better in my head)
The more recent version is in Monsters of the Multiverse, which will probably be easier to find.
newbie question: With 2024 rulebook, are tabaxi and alike "species" now considered a homebrew?
That book has like 40 different player species. It’s the most you’ll find in any book.
No, you can still use any of the previous 5th-edition races.
With the 2024 rules, though, you’d simply ignore the ability score increase from your species (if any) and take it from your background instead.
The sidebar here will tell you how to change the 2014 versions into something 2024 compatible: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AdjustAbilityScores
oh, okay. Cool... thank you! It really was a question for me. With all the changes on the now-legacy "standard" races... will there be further books with updates for non-iconic now-species? 🙂 I know you aren't probably right person to ask if there is such a person at all... It's just silly for me: as soon as me and my friends started to play 5E, it got massive update with many things now deprecated. And I don't think that me and my friends are yet ready to switch to newest edition )
Altho might be worth doing since it seems to make 0 sense to learn 5e which is now 10 years old. Instead prolly should just switch to newest rulings.
Me, who bought 2014 PHB 2 months ago 😄
The ones in Monsters of the Multiverse were basically already built with these changes in mind.
ohhhhh that's really neat! Great to know! Thank you!
So I wouldn’t expect to see those specific ones make a reappearance any time soon.
But they regularly release books with new or updated species.
We might see some next year in the Forgotten Realms player’s guide, for example.
sorry if I am again abusing your attention, but is 3rd party content discussion allowed? DnD 3rd party content, off course
We’ve got #third-party if you want to discuss those, yeah.
thank you a lot!

How are you!
Welcome
Welcome, new folks!
Hello!
Im doing very well! Thanks for asking!
Hi there!
That is good
Yea how about you?
I am alright, a bit tired but overall I am well! Thank you for asking
Well I hope you get some rest soon and im glad you're doing well!
I cant wait to fully get involved with dnd!
The links just above are a good place to start!
Same here i've been contemplating it for ages
I've already been reading a lot about it with the dnd beyond app
Thanks!
Yea same here haha
Um if I create a character am I able to use them in any story?
Not necessarily. Some DMs put limits on character options for various reasons. And you don't get to port the same character (with all their experience and items) into a new game, typically. It's usually a new character for each game, though you could re-use the same concept.
Sweet as
A lot of us find that a fun part of the game!
True the various things you could do
Its boring having 1 character for multiple storys
Some folks like that! But I agree: more interesting to explore multiple stories and personalities.
Yes exactly!
Although the prices on some of these stories haha
Dnd beyond might not be a good place for me. So many stories to choose but kinda expensive
It can be expensive if you're trying to buy all of the options and only for yourself. That's why it can be nice to have the group fund books and content, so everyone chips in a little but everyone also benefits.
Oh okay I understand
If you’re comfortable filling out character sheets manually, you can also see if your local library has 5e books available to peruse/check out!
That's how I got started.
I will have to look thank you
Homebrew all the way in my opinion. Very adaptable and fun for everyone.
I'd suggest new to D&D folks start with the core game rules and options before exploring homebrew (homemade or community-made material not from D&D). Homebrew options can get very complex or unbalanced if folks don't know what they're doing.
Very true and I agree. However, I also think it is a good way to give them a soft introduction without having to know every single rule in the rule book and let the DM handle most of it. In my experience most people I have spoken too about D&D would love to play but are always intimidated. It depends on how you structure your homebrew I guess.
I have gotten so many more people hooked on D&D by giving them a homebrew session.
@hearty sentinel sorry, I didn't mean to take over the convo. Just throwing out there. I hope you are doing well!
I believe WackyWiggles was using the term "homebrew" to refer to a campaign that is not based off a published adventure module, rather than referring to fan made game content
Ah that would be important to clarify!
Yeah no issues with homebrew setting/adventure (although I'd still suggest new DMs try a prewritten adventure so they can focus on learning the game mechanics and running a game and not also have to develop a whole adventure on their own).
But yeah, homebrewed campaigns/games can be a great way to get into the game!
100%! Have to know the basics.
It is very typical advice in this community for newcomers to avoid home brew when learning the game. And that certainly is good advice. But it’s important to know that when we use the term homebrew, we’re typically referring to fan made content, such as classes and subclasses, monsters, and magic items. There is a big difference between creating your own story and world to play in, and creating and balancing the mechanics behind the game itself. Newcomers should avoid trying to change the rules or rebalance the game before they’ve actually played it
Thank you for the advice and I apologize for using the wrong term.
I wouldn't say wrong. Just a matter of context: a homebrew world/adventure versus a homebrew game are rather different, and just saying "Use homebrew" doesn't clarify!
It wasn’t really the wrong term. “Homebrew” can also refer to your campaign setting or story. It’s just not the most typical way to use that term
hello, could someone take a look at my first character to check if everything is correct? (lil bit of homebrew btw)
#character-discussion is the right spot for that, though adding in homebrew does complicate things, so don't be surprised if folks get hung up on that aspect.
@wooden forum new here myself. Welcome!
ah I just wanted to know if the character was a bit stronger than an average level 1 character
hello!
I would take a look for you. How would you like to share? We can move over to the the character discussion thread
If you can post it in #character-discussion as razorwing said I would, just preface the homebrew stuff and be prepared for some feedback relating to that
ah ok
Not that it’s bad per say, just needs a more critical view
@wooden forum moving threads. I will wait for you there!
sure
I'm new y'all. Is a game starting?

In the server. I just wanna vibe with other people with similar interests.
It's a discussion space. Folks have questions or need feedback. They find others to game with. Or yeah, just discussing various aspects of the hobby.
#non-dnd-topics if it's not about D&D.
Thanks
Do you have a question folks can answer?
henlo T w T
Is there a specific channel for character building?
Hey
i am new to to dnd and just wanna watch a party playing from scratch first. How can i do that
Youtube or Twitch would be the best option. There's lot of videos and live streams of people playing the D&D!
Your best bet might be watching some videos of folks playing! I know a few popular series are Dimension 20 and Critical Role.
thanks i am gonna do that first. but i also wanna really be watching a party and maybe ask a few questions along the way
You have pretty long odds of folks letting a random stranger spectate and interrupt the game to ask questions.
Besides YouTube and Twitch, you might also see if local game stores or libaries have tutorial sessions. There's also learn-to-play sessions through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab).
Yeah, even in my local game store where we don't mind people watching, we don't accept mid game interruptions
You'd probably need to find a group that's specifically open to that in order to do it
30$ seems quite high tbh
It's not usually $30 per ticket
Last I checked, the LTP stuff was usually around $8-9 at the virtual weekends. Still not free, but not ridiculous
it says 30$ on the website. I dont know if i am looking wrong because only 5 tikets are available?
https://tabletop.events/conventions/october-virtual-d-d-weekend/badgetypes
Or might the other ones be sold out?
Cause it says Red Carpet Booking and there is no other option
Yeah, the Red Carpet Bookings cost more.
Hello!
The general tickets go on sale ten days before the event.
Which for next month's is around <t:1727798400:F>
Ah okay that makes more sense
The four-hour games I think are usually $20.
They usually have some two-hour games, too, but I don't recall the price off the top of my head.
Probably $10 or so, if I had to guess.
Hmm okay. If I were to purches a ticket as a newcomer. What should I absolutely have to know before starting there
You'll probably get the best answers for that over on the Baldman Games server. They're the ones that run these events.

Okay thanks to yall. 🙏
can someone help me with character creation? i watched a some vids and would like to vc with someone to learn more.
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
What about proficiencies has you stuck?
Are you still trying to figure out what they do, or what to pick, or something else?
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
You should have a box on your sheet that says Proficiency Bonus.
If you're starting at level 1, write a +2 there.
Yeah, if you click the second link in that bot post, it shows the levels where that increases.
It's roughly every four levels, so it'll go up to +6 at most.
kk
Now, do you know what Saving Throws you're proficient with?
It should be listed at the start of your class.
Perfect
So in the Saving Throw section of your sheet, there's probably a little circle next to those two.
You can fill that circle in to track your proficiencies.
So you'd fill it in next to Wisdom and Charisma.
Then you'll want to write a number next to all six of those as well.
are u talking about the little circles under the wis and cha boxes?
By default, your bonus is equal to your ability modifier.
So if you have a +2 Dexterity modifier, you'll also have +2 to Dexterity saving throws.
yo i was bored then i got the random idea to join the discord and im new and have never played D&D so how do i play
Specifically inside the Saving Throws area on your sheet, yeah.
Might be underneath or to the side.
oh i see it now mb
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but if you've got any specific questions, fire away!
ty
Anyway, for the ones you're proficient in, you'll add both your ability modifier and your proficiency bonus.
to my dice roll?
So if you have a +3 Charisma modifier and a +2 proficiency bonus, you'd have a total of +5 for Charisma saving throws.
kk got it
So yeah, you'd write +5 next to Charisma saving throws, and then when you actually roll a Charisma saving throw, you'd add that +5 to the total.
Effectively, proficiency makes you more likely to succeed at the things you've trained for, by letting you add that proficiency bonus to the roll.
Once you've got your Saving Throws written down, the Skills work the same way.
so its an automatic +5 on the wis and cha lines because those r my classes save throws
Each one is just the associated ability modifier, plus your proficiency bonus where applicable.
Assuming you have both a +3 WIS and +3 CON, yeah.
You'll still probably be asked to make saving throws of all kinds, but proficiency gives you an edge for those two.

Hi there, I am an avid Magic the Gathering player and it's really hard to play that game without hearing about Dungeon's and Dragons. To be honest, im Dyslexic and I royally struggle to read all the books and flip back and forth. To make this story even more complex, I just moved to a new state and know no one lol So it's not like i can try and find people who play already to learn from. What advice would you give someone like me to get started..
There are videos that explain portions of the rules (such as Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School). I'm not sure precisely what reading difficulties you have, but the videos can help supplement the written rules.
And we have channels here for finding others to game with. The place to start with that is #find-a-game.
That's amazing. are Handbooker Helper, WASD20's Rules School on YouTube?
And as for finding the game, are people typically open to starting from scratch with someone online?
Yep, YouTube is the spot.
I don't think folks generally expect people to start from nothing. If you were playing with friends and learning together, that's one thing, but I think strangers have slightly higher expectations. Not to the point you need to memorize everything, but consider it courtesy to bring some understanding, rather than putting that 100% on the DM and other players.
Understood. I'll start with the youtube schools and learn what i can. Then at least i can come here with questions
Sounds like a plan!
Do you need to buy anything to start dnd, I'm new but from what I can tell you can use digital dice and you only need the free rules. Is this correct. Is there a necessity to buy a starter set?
Nope, you can play for free. Think of it like the demo version.
Then if you like it you can spend money for the full deal.
You are correct! Technically all you need is a way to look at the result of dice, the free rules, and some buddies.
how does one find someone to teach them?
You look at the basic rules watch some videos then find a game to help you learn as you play
Maybe ask some questions along the way
Unfortunately, we receive dozens of new players in this server every day. It's simply too many people to be able to sit down and go through the whole set of rules with individually.
As recommended above, start off by reading on your own, and we'll be happy to help if you have any specific questions along the way!
Hi
Hey, I had a question about the spell of Thaumaturgy (hopefully this is the right channel). My DM ruled that if I were to cast Thaumaturgy, it would be very loud and extremely obvious, so I can't use it for helping Intimidation checks. The DM I have is new, and I'm currently trying to convince him that I could use Thaumaturgy in helping with Intimidation checks, but what do you think?
Spells only do what they say they do - anything else is up to the DM to determine if it makes sense in the given game context.
That being said, being loud and having the capability to access magic might be an intimidating thing by default! Try talking through the scene with them, and seeing if that helps your case.
Yep - definitely worth a discussion with the DM.
But don't be sad if they just say "No" to it in that specific situation.
Question about hp
Whenever your constitution mod changes, you add/subtract the difference from your max health
Let's say hypothetically you have 10 CON and for 4 levels straight you roll 1s
If something happens and you lose 3 points in CON and your mod goes from 0 to -2, you'll basically end up with less health than you started on?
I understand, I just wasn't sure if most DMs follow rules as written when it came to Thaumaturgy or not because I did see sources online saying that some DMs allow either to roll with Advantage or to add a d4 to the roll, but completely understandable if he disallows that, thanks for the advice!
I'm not familiar with anything that permanently reduces your constitution score off the top of my head. If you can point to the source as written, I'd ask again in #dnd-rules with that context. If it's a homebrew mechanic, your DM would be the best person to ask about how to resolve it.
Other than the fact that you don't typically roll for HP, you take the average roll instead, in the scenario you envision, yes you would have less HP.
For better or for worse, there's no real meaning to "most DMs". What matters ultimately is what your DM does.
Ignore the ability score loss. What if they started with Con 6 (-2)?
Your hp does go up and down if your Con goes up and down though. For example unattuning to an amulet of health
And isn't there a minimum 1?
For leveling up hp
"Each time you gain a level, you gain an additional Hit Die. Roll that die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total (minimum of 1) to your Hit Point maximum."
Fair enough, the DMs decisions are final when it comes to that kinda stuff
When your Constitution modifier increases by 1, your hit point maximum increases by 1 for each level you have attained. - PH, Beyond the first level, page 15.
There's also a note that same happens if you lose hp when your mod decreases, but I can't find it off the top of my head
Wait then I've been playing for over half a year with less hp than I should have?
rip
My bard played two sessions without knowing that Vicious Mockery also does disadvantage on attacks
Will need to do some math tho on my hp as I rolled some dices and took AVG with the other
His insults weren't good enough to distract them but good enough to inflict emotional damage
What was your original Constitution and level, and what are they now?
good enough to kill several of them, like that one goblin that got critted and got 4+3 roll against him
Vicious Mockery can't crit. It does not use an attack roll. The target must make a saving throw
We started at level 2 iirc and it was a modifier of 2 now 3 and level is now 11 single class wizard
Now I have 77 hp without changing anything
It rolled 1 on it and it was funnier
If that's how you enjoy running it in your home game, then by all means, have fun with it. I just wanted to point it out because this is the Newcomer's channel, so I want to make sure people that are just learning the game understand what is or is not part of the actual rules
Do you know what level your con modifier became +3?
It still depends on the DM as every DM I played with had their own rules for some mechanics
I'd need to look what level I can gain attributes
But it was level 6 or 8 iirc
It was 8th level iirc
No wait
At 8th I took some into wisdom so that couldn't be at level 8
I'm lost now
But it'd probably be like a 4-6 hp difference
Well, yes some DM's will change the rules in their games, but for the sake of discussion in this server, we should assume that everyone is playing by the actual rules of the game. If we had to add a caveat of "unless your DM changed it" to everything we said, it would be impossible to have any conversations about the game or the rules, and we would not have any basis of shared understanding for which to have a discussion around. Discussions about changing the rules should be done in #homebrew
What are the basic differences between different class spell lists?
Like, Wizards have the most variety and utility for their spells, what about the others?
A lot of it is theme
So clerics have more healing and divine spells
While druids have more nature and healing spells
👋
Wizards and sorcerers have more overlap but treat spells differently
and iirc, sorcerers' spells are more straightforward and combat-focused
and warlocks have eldritch blast
Wizards do have more utility compared to sorcerer
I need help making a character cuz I have -0% of an idea on how to do it
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
This chapter in the Free Rules does a good job of walking through the steps, if you haven’t seen it yet:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/creating-a-character
If you are starting from scratch, I reccomend having a look at the wide variety of free resources online and seeing how far you can get with those. D&D Beyond even has a built in guide I believe. The array of materials on the internet is truly amazing, and should get you through most everything.
We even have #learn-to-play here (and the free basic rules which has everything you need to get started)
Thanks, just joined and saved me some time!
One that was ai written wasn’t it
Two I already tried the internet
It wasn’t useful
make sure you have an understanding of the rules and #character-discussion can help you out
I don’t I want to learn to play but everyone keeps redirecting me to the internet
It’s kind of annoying
😔
some people like the bite-sized video guides like Handbooker Helper. If you have more specific questions we can help you out.
but many of the resources are online, like character builders. D&D Beyond lets you build for free with the Basic rule options.
