Gotta give it a sec. Folk jump about different channels, and Fridays and Weekends tend to be a little chiller as folk likely have their games 🙂
Hey all, played DnD for about 10 minutes with some friends yesterday and I'm already down the rabbithole now

Hey guys, I'm new and I have absolute no knowledge about D&D and I just wanna have fun, can somebody teach me?
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. While it can be nice to find a DM that is willing to teach newbies, it’s most helpful if you can meet them halfway or further to ease their burden.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games.
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Aight, ty buddy
Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself. I’m pretty new to dnd, my knowledge of it consists of from Bauldur’s Gate 3, Vox Machina, and a couple of videos I’ve watched from Critical Role. I’d love to actually learn more and play a game, however I don’t know anyone in my area who plays. 🥴

Is druid an ok class for a first game
It may be a little complex for newcomers, but as long as you’re interested in playing a druid it’ll be great
I kinda like how the new rulebook actually lists class complexity. Druid’s high but not impossible
It's weird, I'm kinda a newcomer kinda not. I've been wanting to play since about 2005 but have a grand total of about 7 game sessions across that time.
Welcome!
hey can someone tell me if this is a good character for a new comer https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/104706187/xCVPnZ
wtf?
what
Seems mostly ok to me! For some reason I’m not seeing a background though, so you just need to add that if you haven’t already
Background isn’t the same as backstory, your background is a mechanical choice that gives you a few benefits (i.e. Soldier, Hermit, Sage, etc)
On the character builder it should be the 2nd to last or last page
i am a sage
You can change it if you want, or make a custom background using the built-in tool. The site doesn’t say explicitly iirc, but when it prompts you to enter text it’s asking you to copy over a feature from another official background
oh okay but i am fine with my sage background for what my build is trying to be
Overall everything looks good. The only change I would recommend is sticking to using standard array or point buy for setting your stats if you are not part of a campaign at the moment. Main reason, Dungeon Masters typically don't accept pre-rolled stats that they were not present for.
gotta love DnD amirite
In order for me to use the new character creation sheet (5.5e) in Beyond, do I need to buy the new PH, from 2024?
The 2024 free basic rules provides 4 classes (more coming I believe).
For more options and those currently found in the 2024 PHB, yes you would need to purchase the book or be part of a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing that has access to it.
No, the free 2024 Basic Rules is already up and running. All classes, except for the articificer, are available on dnd beyond. Each class has been given one free subclass for players to use.
I asked because I already had a Monk created in Beyond and his file has an old model. So I made a new Monk just to see the model on the card and it's already showing the new one
Thank you very much for the help
Happy to help.

Are you new with dnd as a whole?
can warhammer usin dexterity?
it does not have the finesse property, so not without a certain class/subclass
ah okay
What is 'PBP'?
The only class that can use dexterity instead strength is the monk class. Plus you'll also need proficiency in warhammers to use them well.
Play By Post.
Oh so like one person posts and then the other responses and so on?
Or is it like a post by DM that the players comment to
Sorry, I'm new and just going through the things here trying to learn what's what
Only asking if google doesn't help
To quote Undying
These tend to be slower paced (as in you need to write out what your character is doing rather than vocally explain it) and thus a little less stress on the "how do I look/sound in front of others" that other D&D games may be.

Hey I'm braaaand new to dnd and stuff, been consuming so much media and am suuuper interested by the game but my anxiety tends to keep me from reaching out to people and stuff...so if anyone's willing to help me along and teach me to properly play/deal with my baby bs I'd be so so appreciative.
Hi I'm new here and want to join a DND campain. I want to play DND sooooo bad

i would like to play as a goblin artificer battle smith but when looking online i am met with character creation tools (d&d beyond) in which i have to pay 30 euro for a book to unlock this race and class? Is D&D paywalled?
if you use dndbeyond yes you need to pay for the digital editions to have access to different features from different books.
but what if i just want to play offline
you can always use pen and paper or digital character sheets and manually enter the stuff you want if you’re playing offline.
i use roll20 because it’s easy to edit in spells, features, etc into the character sheet for this reason. especially if i’m just printing out a physical character sheet.
So how does this work exactly, i choose a character but it has a set of limitations and mechanics that are written in these sourcesbooks that i MUST adhere to?
it’s best to assume your DM and fellow players will be playing from the book. if you’re interested in homebrew that’s a discussion you’d need to have with them.
our DM is as wet behind the ears as I am 😄
the three of us (my gf, my brother in law and me) just started together, we got a essentials kit
i don’t recommend homebrew for new players. in fact i don’t recommend using too many expansions if you’re new either. it’s best if you stick to the PHB and one or two other popular source books like xanathars or tashas.
thanks for answering by the way!
no prob /gen
PHB?
so theres base versions and expansions?
hmm so you are essentially paying for the creation of the lore and new character archetypes, spells, items and stuff? That's not so bad actually
There are the 'core' books which are the DMG (Dungeon Master's Guide), PHB (Playerhandbook) and MM (Monster Manual).
If you had no access to the internet, then these would be the core books you'd need to run a game. However many of the free to use monsters from the SRD (System Reference Document, the legal document containing all free to use content), are available online, and Magic Items from the Dungeon Master's guide are likewise available.
But the PHB contains not only the basic rules that are free online (which include only one option per species and one option per class), but many more options for characters. So you can play happily with just the PHB if on a budget.
The 2024 PHB has been deliberately redesigned so that all the expanded content added since 2014 that is now considered 'core' is now available in that book.
But there are other books that expand either settings (the worlds you play in), or certain themes (Dragons, giants), or so on.
cant you just make all that stuff up yourself without needing all these books?
ah i see what you're saying: classes that were originally part of expansions are now part of the core 2024 D&D PHB?
You could definitely homebrew a lot of content yourself. You'll still want the basic rules because otherwise you'd be essentially setting yourself the task of making a balanced TTRPG from scratch.
When you pay for the official content, you're paying for the art, the playtesting and balancing and the fact it's official. Which can be important in of itself. Official is the common ground we all share, so if joining new groups or wanting to play in Adventure League (official organised play) then official is (more likely) going to be allowed while homebrew might be scrutinised more.
yeah i see why that balance would be required for not having tavern fights at every new game
thats useful info thanks a lot
so does that mean that people who bought all the books for having access to all the lore, essentially lost those books when that 2024 sweep into core was made?
Some of- not all the extras, but the ones they felt were now the 'core' experience, along with rejigging some classes.
Previously it would have been recommended to new players to get the PHB 2014 + Xanathar's Guide to Everything (Expanded rules, spells, character options) + Tasha's Guide to Everything (Even more expanded rules, spells, character options) + Monster of the Multiverse (Expanded monster and playable species options) to get all the base rules and content most games use. The PHB 2024 aims to include most of the 'now base' rules into one book (Expanded rules, spells, character options, playable species)
so thats probably not included with the essentials kit then any of these books
Not currently no. The Basic Rules and 'Essentials rules' included with the Starting kit and Essential kit would be more based on the 2014 rule set AFAIK.
But still completely playable using just those rules, and 2024 basic rules are available online if you want to compare.
As a new player it all that will seem overly complicated, so just know if you have the essentials kit with the essentials rules, and just want to homebrew extra content- that works just fine.
Im looking for an online group (no one around me plays) but I cant type anything in the searching for a dm chat, is this the right channel to ask for help with that?
Ah, so you'll need to follow the instructions in #find-a-game to use the bot command (/looking-for-dm) to bring up the form to fill in so the bot can post to the channel for you.
thanks @solemn light
Thank you, I thought I was suppose to do that in the other channel, which is why I was confused
I think text games can be very fun but also very different
the main difference is that everyone gets to think about what they're writing before they hit send
and you can go back and edit messages and stuff
you get a different style of play just as a consequence of the medium of communication
How common is it to obtain a magical piece of gear like armor or a weapon?
Heavily depends on the DM, but it's pretty common to find at least some relatively early
Every table is different but it's pretty common, particularly after level 5 to start accessing magical weapons and armor.
Is there a “most popular” campaign?
No? So many campaigns are homebrew (made up by the DM and players and not tied to any official D&D adventure/setting).
Lost Mine of Phandelver is a popular starter one
Curse of Strahd is probably the most popular one, at least it's easily the campaign I personally most often hear about, or people being most interested in playing in
im thinking about focusing as a DM for newbies and thinking about what is the biggest stumbling block. I'm thinking it is some combo of huge rulebooks and character creation. For characters it seems simple to have premades, but then you need to convince people who have a character in mind that may or may not be possible, or may not be as smooth to play starting out as something similar. anyone have advice from perspective of new player or helper of new players?
I think the new PHB actually does a great job of actually teaching people how to fill out a character sheet.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
I think that trying to guide them into a simpler idea would work best,
For example, my brother when he
first started wanted to play General Grievous. So he instead of playing a 4 armed robot, we got him to play a duel wielding elf who went after wizards
Yeah, there’s always gonna be some ideas that just won’t translate into D&D.
And it helps to reinforce the idea that these are heroes at the beginning of their stories.
I partly agree, but this step right here is a problem for me, personally: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#HoldThatThought
Exactly
But back to the original question, could you not simply offer each player a choice between premade and handmade?
If two players choose differently, is that an issue?
so to elaborate, I want to strongly encourage premades to do one/two shots just to get things rolling. I suspect a lot of players will want to make their character, not knowing the time and energy investment involved. I could use tips on adapting premades on the fly to help work with player desires and not require a two hour session zero for a oneshot
So first things first, I argue that you should always have a session 0 before any campaign or One shot
i'm considering something of a statblock template and fill in skill and background. a half-premade.
Personally, I think a session 0 is good for them so that way they can talk about their character ideas and have you help make them
the focal point there is two-hour
the concept of s0 alone is important enough to stop and talk about
As in you only have two hours to sit down, play, and wrap up?
That’s true, I’m a large personal believer in session 0 so that’s my opinion
So do you have a schedule planned out or do you only have this one on the books?
im losing you guys. this is conceptual. I want tips on speeding up character building and adapting premades for new players.
Ohhhh
Alright I think I understand
Make premades for simple character ideas (think LOTOR when it comes to characters) and then restrict species to a smaller pool
Most classes are pretty simple to choose between, species I think is probably the most extensive and hardest choice for new people
Also restrict Artificers
i personally think limitations beget creativity. I guess i worry that is a tough sell.
I absolutely agree, however, artificers are a massive ball of complications that new people shouldn’t deal with
And throwing every single race at the players is a good way to overwhelm them
Why’s that?
here i am worrying about druids...
Druids are really bad, grab a couple of simple animal stat blocks
ok no artificers.
Unless you know every single Magic item in the game like the back of your hand you shouldn’t play them
i make up most magic items
Maybe we should move this discussion to #dm-discussion as we've moved beyond the purpose of this channel which is to help new to D&D folks learn the core game rules and mechanics and get started.
Combat - I died my first 2 sessions due to inexperience and what seemed to be unscaled enemies was honestly really demoralizing. I spent like 3 days creating my loxodon bard got killed an revived session 1 died session 2 and was told it’ll cost a large amount of money to res him so i made a new character and now im afraid of any combat scenarios
(I get that we started with "how do we make things easier for new folks?")
My go-to for new players is to just say “x book only” and stick with that for the first couple of sessions. Tends to work well with only one source to pull from.
I asked here on purpose, knowing I may be pushing boundries, because this is the exact audience I need. we can move if you like, though.
Just go straight PHB and your good
I’ve actually got a Phandelver game spinning up in a few weeks and I’m taking the chance to learn the 2024 rules so I can better understand them for running future games.
There’s already a conversation happening in #dm-discussion so I was worried about interrupting their convo
this is an awesome anecdote for me, thank you!
Let's wrap it up here and any further discussion, let's take it to #dm-discussion as this is becoming more and moe DM-specific discussion.
I'll wrap up by asking, any new players that have stories of what was difficult or discouraging on your first go into DND, i'm open to DMs
Is there actually a penalty for long resting in armor
And also if there is, does Arcane Armor bypass it
In 2014 version, Xanathar's gives a rule about gaining less used hit dice back, and not recovering from exhaustion, but nothing outside of that
Nothing about Arcane Armor mentions any change to this
Also I guess this is more of a #dnd-rules question than a newcomer one 😛
Thinking about adding a casino to my LMoP campaign but that obviously raises a super important question. Do I make the drinks free?
No harm in it, doesnt directly affect the characters, unless you wanna do something like offering them the free drinks, and if they drink them (or drink too many) there's an effect on their gambling where they find it harder to stop / gotta roll a save or something not to take a huge risk with bets 😏
Hello guys! I am new here and need help with something. I mean, the character build page wont load, is there a bug with the page or is it the fault of my internet
Though more of a #dm-discussion question really

hello, interested in playing dnd through play-by-post. is is possible
Hi! I’m new to the server and the game. I’m overwhelmed with trying to learn how to play on my own and was hoping that someone could help me out some time!
Welcome! There’s some handy links above to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
I don’t have anything super specific, my brain is just super foggy from trying to read so much to understand the game and mechanics of playing
There’s no substitute for actually playing. Do you have any friends who play?
Reading the rules is important for sure but getting to play, you kinda experience the context and it all sorta blends together and people are there to help you
Yeah, I’m trying to be a DM but trying to find people to play has been tough. But I also made a character to play. I bought the Essentials Kit to get started.
I don’t, none of my friends are very interested or they just don’t have the time to sit down and even play through a one shot session
Hey there
Do you have a copy of the Player's Handbook?
Hey there how is everyone
hello, new hopeful player looking to get into the game - suggestions on where to start in here as far as looking for groups/handbook links so i can start trying to learn how classes and characters are to be made?
disregard, i just looked at the pinned comments
I don’t. When I say I’m new, I mean NEW! Like very beginning, bare bones, can’t afford to shell out $30 for the handbook at the moment
Well, $50 for 5e, especially when I don’t even know what edition I’ll find a campaign for since I know that each edition has different rule sets
Well, I’m just looking for help because I’m trying to do my own DND server thing and I don’t have barely have any players or dungeon Master and I was told to go here I’m not trying to be a bother or anything
I think you may have replied to the wrong comment? Or are you asking me to join? I may be misreading/misinterpreting
So you can get the basic rules of 5e for free
That’s the latest rules so the majority of games you’ll find will run off that
For @alpine island and @tulip mulch :Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games.
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Kinda yeah, I’m just desperate man. I don’t know what else to do here. All I got is people telling me to go to the official dnd server and I don’t know what else to do not trying to be a bother or anything
If you want to find a group to play with I would check out the resources in the second paragraph above. If you use #find-a-game there’s instructions on how to make a post in #looking-for-players (if you’re just looking for players for a game) or #looking-for-community (if you have another D&D server/community to advertise)
Can someone explain to me the different "types" of books? I think some have new rules and races for players but others are stories and them some are just monsters? For example is Tasha's Couldron of Everything just new rules and options? And is Mordekainenes Tome of Foes just new enemies? Just a bit confused on what books i should get now that i have the new 2024 phb
You seem to have got the books right there!
What is best to multi class into as a human fighter class for a dungeon crawl first time.
In 3.5 rules
Try #dnd-elder-editions for discussing 3.5 stuff
hello can someone help me cuz im pretty new
I've watched quite a few tutorials but I don't know how to play for real, don't have anyone to play with and can't seem to figure out how the dnd beyond character creation works
So you’d like help building a character?
Are you set on using DnD beyond? I’m not personally familiar with that platform for character creation but from what I do know you have to have purchased material to have access to some races/backgrounds. Etc.

i dont know
my nephew told me to use it,as he likes to use it
so im not sure what's better
dnd beyond or paper character sheet
I see probably nothing wrong with it, it seems to make it super easy from what I understand. A website called Roll20 also have a character created helper called the charactermancer I believe. You could check that out as well
Roll20 seems to me beginner friendly, at least from what I’ve seen while trying to figure out the game
ok i will thanks
@raw dock do you play video games? there’s a few video games inspired by DnD 5e like Baldurs Gate 3 and Solasta. i recommend them for new players who are still familiarizing themselves in the system because it allows you to experiment with mechanics in a controlled environment.
they usually aren’t 1:1 tabletop (often they have slight tweaks to rules to facilitate a better video gaming experience) but they have enough overlap that familiarizing yourself with mechanics of the game like action, bonus action, roleplaying, dice roles, etc is made much easier through playing the “video game versions” of it.
i know but i cant afford them
solasta frequently goes on sale on steam. i bought it for 6.99.
What’s solalsta?
it’s a video game inspired by dungeons and dragons 5e. it uses most of the same mechanics and is basically the closest thing we have to a 1:1 video game version of tabletop dnd 5e.
that sounds cool
Is bg3 actually like dnd?
it’s quite good! it doesn’t have the visual polish or writing of BG3 but it’s much closer to the actual mechanics of 5e than dnd. it has actual flying mechanics, readied actions, and observes restrictions to 5e that bg3 omitted like somatic components for spells requiring a free hand and not being able to cast multiple leveled spells in one turn.
it also lacks the extra conditions and environmental mechanics that bg3 implemented like the wet condition and grease being flammable etc.
I’m not disagreeing that playing a video game inspired by DnD would help you understand it more. The most education I’d say I ever got from playing say BG3 is how combat turns and simple combat mechanics work. But it’s doesn’t dive too deep into why this is happening. How a crit roll works and intricate mechanics it’s nice to have in depth knowledge of. And it can never truly prepare you for ttrpg role play. (My favorite part about DnD)
I’ve been writing rps for as long as I can think, (I like playing characters) is that like ttrpg roleplay?
maybe i guess im not familiar with soul RPs as oppsed to in the DnD setting, but if you were RPing with other people than id say probably yes.
Yeah it’s been other people
The only part I don’t get is the character creation stuff I suppose
Classes and the such
Are there specific ways a class should act?
no not a class per se
Not really, character personality is mostly class-independent
With bg3, there’s one thing I didn’t really get which was warlocks and their patrons (I think that’s what they’re called)
you make the characters overall personality. Their flaws and traits and RP those to the best of your ability, but a paladin can be menacing and barbarian can be sweet and gentle its up to you entirely
What are they?
Sorry about all the questions aswell
questions are good!
Except for Paladins, who do have to reasonably stick to the tenets of their oath if they want to keep their powers. I.e. no wanton destruction for an Oath of Devotion, for example
Also we have a dedicated channel for BG3 discussion here: #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
What happens if a paladin breaks said oath and would that then make them an evil character?
that true paladin usally have a guideline for the actions they would take in a scenario, but the personality and demeanor are your to make what you wish
I just meant I didn’t get the entire idea of warlock and the other people they follow?
Not sure if this is the right channel, but is anyone running a 5e campaign that is beginner friendly? I haven't played dnd before and want to learn how to play and hopefully run my own campaign in the future.😁
yea if so can i join too
To put it as simple as possible a warlock is someone who gets their magic by making some kind of pact or deal with someone with lots of power aka their patron.
So in simple terms “a deal with a devil?”
No not necessarily. An oath can be bent and broken in a variety of ways, not just in an evil way. For example, if an Oath of Redemption Paladin decided to not grant an enemy an opportunity to redeem themselves. Likewise, if a Oath of Conquest Paladin decided to give mercy to a strong enemy.
There’s a lot of leeway however, and an oath-break is essentially forced to happen it likely won’t happen (i.e. if the party as a whole decided to spare an enemy, or if sparing the enemy is the only viable option).
with the warlocks and patrons its like for example following a religion. you have a person quote unquote that you follow or worship and they have ideals that you try and follow as to stay on their good side per se. its probably more complicated than that in its entirety but thats my basic understanding anyways. @north orchid
Yeah exactly. A lot of times its quite literally a deal with a devil
Paladins also aren’t inherently good or evil. However, breaking an oath to willingly pursue an evil ambition will cause you to change subclasses to the Oathbreaker subclass
Correct, though in D&D it's way harder to break the oath somehow
as in you have more control
Most punishments for other kinds of oathbreaks, if there even has to be one, involve simpler things like repentance or temporary loss of powers
What are the oaths of a paladin?
If you’d like to find a game you should use #find-a-game . Soliciting games outside of the appropriate channels is unfortunately against server rules
Depends on the subclass
And what are they?
I like to think of paladins as a gods soldiers. It doesnt mean the god they are fighting for is good or evil though so breaking their oaths doesnt automatically make you evil. Ex is if your god is an evil god but you decide to break their oaths id argue your turning "good" and not evil
Oh wait you mean oaths not tenets
Does every class have those?
Every class has subclasses yes
What are tenets?
oaths? no
Oaths are the Paladin subclasses, each Oath has their own tenets which are essentially principles you have to follow
Ah okay
For example, one of the Tenets of the Oath of Devotion is “Honesty. Don’t lie or cheat. Let your word be your promise.”
if your playing like fighter ot barbarian which are more beginner friendly classes you wont have oather or tennets to follow
What is an Oath of Vengeance?
Another Paladin subclass
it's batman as a paladin
Ah so they are the night?
they live in the shadows Xd
Thank you! Sorry about that, do I need to delete the message from this channel?
no they care less about taking lives if it brings them to their initial goal faster
I think you’re ok, if the mods feel the need to they’ll delete it
OH and alignment. What is that?
whereas other paladins will have trouble or difficulty taking a life of a random person because they dont deserve it
that would basically be how your character feels about what they do
Cool, thank you😊
Like how does that table work?
Because I know there’s good neutral and evil
But there’s another 3
Alignment is a broad, vague tool used to quickly describe your character’s general attitude. It’s a descriptive thing that is determined by your actions rather than a prescriptive thing that determines them instead.
Okay
theres good neutral evil
lawful neutral chaotic
Essentially it goes off of 2 axes: Good - Evil and Lawful - Chaos
the first ones would describe the characters intentions
and the second 3 describe how they would try to achieve the intentions
or more like how they go about achieving them
if that makes sense
Good <—> Evil is pretty self explanatory, but Lawful <—> Chaos is heavily debated within the community
I get chaotic evil and lawful good, but how would a lawful evil work?
or a chaotic good
basically, someone who does evil things
but in a lawful way, like maybe they only kill certain people, or they have boundries on what they do etc
idk if thats a good example tho ;p
Chaotic good ex is batman he doesnt follow rules but he does it for good. Lawful evil would be following rules but they are evil rules. Like pirates for example
I personally prescribe to the idea that lawful measures your belief in the concept of laws & governance (aka “order”). This may come about in a variety of ways from having a personal code, predictable behavior, working within an existing system, etc.
Honestly Batman is a famously tricky example because various incarnations can fit into every single one of the 9 squares
correct
Would I be less of a player, if I were to get help to create a character?
no
ofcourse not, take all the help you can get
A lawful evil example may be like a dictator. A chaotic good example would be like Robin Hood
absolutely not
as long as you yourself enjoy what you are doing, everyone is happy
If you waited to create a character without help for the first time youd never play imo
Because the first time I tried to play, I asked for help to create a character, they said to create one on my own. I said okay, but I was never able to understand any of it 😂
I assumed it was a bad thing
I mean, you still need to learn how your character works
But you can do that even if someone else helps you build it
I don’t think your original questions got answered but the channel pins & #learn-to-play can help you get started since they have links to the free basic rules. As for D&DBeyond, if you’re new I would skip the 1st tab of the character creator for now as it’s a bunch of toggles that you would modify according to the game you’re in.
thx
I will say its fine to get help bringing your character to life but its up to you to decide what kind of character you want to play. Thats where i dont really like to help. Like if you want to play a magical pirate i can help you decide what class and spells to take but i dont like to help players decide if they want to play a magical pirate or a bird thief or something else for example.
@static tiger could you help me make a character
So you help with the technical details but not the idea?
Yeah exactly
That makes sense, let’s the player get keep the creative work
Also makes it where the player is way more emotionally invested in their character.
If you’re able to, would you mind helping me create mine when I get an idea?
That way you cry more when they die to a mind flayer 2 years from now
😂 (Fartbuckle) 🥲

What are bards supposed to be
Unfortunately asking for games outside of the appropriate channels is against server rules. For help finding a group to play with in this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games. In my experience most campaigns are beginner friendly even if not explicitly advertised as such, so it’s always good to ask beforehand.
oh sorry
Bards are performing spellcasters
Magical performing artists essentially. They’re pretty flexible in what they can do and are loaded with supportive abilities.
How would I make a warlock?
Narratively or mechanically?
its fine go to the bottom of the chats pageo n the left and see looking for players/looking for DM there you can see people running games and they have deesriptions so you can see if any sound interesting to you
yeah usually, any kind of deal with a pact patron is part if your backstory. work with your DM if you have one!
Yeah I'd say warlocks are pretty important to work with your dm with. You don't want to make a pact with someone who's not in your dms world for example
Is the best idea to make a character after finding a game?
I’d say there’s 3 main questions you should answer for a Warlock:
- Who your patron is
- How your pact came about
- What you’re using your pact to do
As Eric said the first point probably should be left vague until you join a game. Something simple like “a devil” or “an eldritch being” should be fine for now.
its not a bad idea to make characters as practise, but be read to make a new one or change them a lot once you join a game, to adapt to the game and DM
When I heard of dnd and I got a little bit into races lore, I wanted to make a specific character but I never ended up making them
I make characters that I never use in games as a form of therapy
Oh?
How do you mean?
🤣
Lmaoo I'm joking It's not actually therapy just once you create 1 character you'll have so many ideas for others you end up making like 4 or 5 lmao
It's kind of addicting
Would you be able to help me make a character right now actually?
this is the truth
and if you got a good DM they can help you implement and play them all lol
Could someone please help me learn how to play dnd, I’m fairly new and I don’t know how to properly play
???

As a semi new player trying to become a dm any tips?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

Is anyone open to teaching me the basic rules. I'm new and ready to start a campaign with friends. I look through the DnD beyond books and and still kinda lost
Communication is the most important skill to have as a DM.
Communicate expectations, preferences, and compatibility. This alone can help avoid common missteps that play groups encounter.
@true musk what kind of missteps?
Is there anything specific that needs clarification?
I’m away from my computer and can’t go in depth at the moment. But check out this video by pointy hat: https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4?si=yoNfaolozFMEivDd
It covers quite a bit on this topic.
As Zero said proper communication solves a lot of issues born out of differing table expectations. This can range from:
- Expectations of tone (i.e. one player wanted a grimdark campaign, while another wanted a light fantasy)
- Expectations of choice (i.e. one player wanted to use a race from Xanathar’s, while the DM only allows PHB content)
- Expectations of boundaries (i.e. DM puts in child abuse as a plot point while such a topic is triggering for another player)
There’s many more examples, and many more angles to look at the one’s I’ve given, but hopefully this paints a clearer picture.
How The class abilities play in and how some of the checks play in
For the former part, do you mean how to use certain class abilities or when you can use them?
And then for the latter, do you mean when you can use / call for a check?
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and check out Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). Those should help get you started. There are a bunch of other resources as you encounter new challenges as well.
My list of tips: #dnd-newcomers message
You can also search the server using dm advice and/or dm tips as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!
For the abilities when and both for the checks I'm just brand new to DnD and have a hard time
I would give the 2024 Free Rules a read through if you haven’t already since they’ll largely cover your questions. I’ll still answer and link you to the relevant sections as well.
Each class ability will tell you when and how they are used. Typically they’ll take either an Action, Bonus Action, or Reaction.
For example, at level 1 the Fighter class gets the Second Wind ability, which states you may use your Bonus Action to activate it. As a counter-example, at level 3 the Barbarian class gets Primal Knowledge, of which the first part states that you get proficiency in 1 skill from the Barbarian skill list. This part is permanent/always on.
As for calling checks, Players will not normally roll for a check without the DM telling them to do so (exceptions exist for specific player-controlled abilities that have them roll a check, such as the Inquisitive Rogue’s Insightful Fighting feature). A DM will typically call for a check whenever a Player is trying to attempt something that falls outside their abilities and has a meaningful chance of success/failure or a roll would determine the severity of success/failure
Hi! im a new player and im playing a twilight cleric. i struggle to understand how my spells work in combat and understand their limitations, is there somewhere i could go that allows you to do like one-off combat sessions with a character just so i can do fights and test out certain spells?
If you’re a DM, a roll with a meaningful chance of success/failure is usually made under some sort of pressure. Examples include but aren’t limited to:
- Time Pressure. The task is done quickly (i.e. picking a lock to hide in a closet to avoid a guard)
- Finesse Pressure. The task is done with a high degree of precision (i.e. leaping off a cliff onto the back of a griffon mount)
- Distraction Pressure. The task is done in an unfavorable environment (i.e. navigating through a storm with howling wind)
A severity of success/failure roll will usually be made when an impossible task is attempted BUT a roll would still help determine the outcome of an attempt. For example, trying to convince the King to abdicate his throne and give you his crown. A successful Persuasion check may have him take it as a joke, and perhaps let a player wear it for a second as part of that joke. A failure may have him see it as an insult and have the player be punished for the transgression.
I've never heard of such an offering, but I could just be unaware!
The spells are usually fairly self explanatory, is there a specific example you could give that’s confusing you?
There are games called one shots, just a single session game. That would be the best bet
Not exactly what you're after, but I agree that's likely as close as you'll get.
its more that i struggle to utilize the spell correctly in combat situations, or even use the wrong spell. in our last encounter i tried to just run away from the enemy, and didnt use any of my spells to hide myself. so i want to practice combat to get a better sense and feel for what to do and how to best utilize my spells
I think that’s an issue with strategy over spells. Your Channel Divinity is an incredible defensive buff
As for spell selection, you should generally have at least 1 offensive cantrip and 1 offensive spell per spell level. Guiding Bolt is an amazing level 1 option for Clerics
that sound more like growing pains of being new, happens
example on myself is using all my Alter Self for Bard jokes and now we are headed to a fight and I have one 3rd level spell, not the most popular bard at the moment
part of the fun of learning!
Hello!! I'm a brand new player and so are 2 of my other friends, we have actually never played dnd before but I've been dying to learn and be able to play with my friends does anyone have any advice for a group of new players, we also don't have a dm or know how but eventually i'd be interested in that as well.. i apologize if this is kinda complicated i've just been really interested in playing dnd for quite some time now and would love some advice or tips in diving into it with my friends for the first time
Welcome
thank you !! im so excited to start
I would run for you if I didn't already have a campaign going with a lot of people and I'm trying to get my paid game going. But I hope you find a game for yourself.
Im in the same boat my group of 3 are struggling as we play since our dm in new to this too. its definitely a struggle but some how we make it work
how did yall get started? i think thats so cool im trying to figure things out myself or learn how to dm myself if needed
we'd definiely want more players so next time we play we can have more people online or irl
we just went went the flow sorta my dm is a good buddy of mine and he did lots of reading and learning on how to dm and he just goes by ear kinda. and me and my other buddy play as our characters as best as we can
yea same here not many of my friends are into playing but i also have my group of 3 as well luckily
can someone let me join a campaign
that sounds like a good time !!
im new
yeah its better than 2 players we play for 6 hours each time mostly because we forget what time it is, and we sit there and talk in the middle of it trying to figure out things and questions we have
I'd totally adopt you all as players if I could.
that would be awesome lol we need players in ours
i would join but i do wanna try playing for the first time w my friends since im a bit nervous about messing things up
The only available slot I have is my paid game, funds are tight right now.
thats the whole point is messing up and learning from it i mess up a lot
Also mistakes only build us up you know?
yes brand new! we haven't played before
i looked at it and i dont understand
very true
yes i have the handbook!! we also have watched videos like critical role and such to kinda learn visually as well if that makes sense
bet thx
yes!!
i want to play on roll 20 but its confusing
i just made a looking for dm page hope someone applys
How does one get access to a looking for dm page?
no not yet, we dont know anyone
u can make one an dit gives u a list to fill out
i would be open to learning how to do it tho
Ah
so bottom channel type in /looking for dm and itll give u a form
me and my 2 other friends
breh slowmode
ah okay thank you ill definitely keep that in mind
honestly not that much unfortunately
oohh okay
if you think about it theres probably a reason dragons have spikes on their backs im pretty sure they arent apex predators
are you able to create whatever world you desire or does it have to be specific
animals in the wild evolve spikes to make themselves harder to eat
hellooo
i do have a question low key: how do you learn spells? do you unlock them through holding specific items, or something else?
by level ups
thank you so muchhh omg!!!
how do you keep track of your xp?
It depends on the dm, they might do milestone or xp. I'm more experienced with milestone myself.
theres either a milestone thing the dm makes or you earn it by slaying monsters and keep track of it on your sheet
basically
would milestone mean you just defeat certain things to level up?
Yes
like finish a quest
Yes
ohhhh tysm
also didnt there USED to be multiple tarasques
???
ok lets just hope the spikes are the reason they are apex predators and there isnt a monster we dont know about
How a character learns spells is going to be dependent on the chosen class. Wizards, Sorcerers, Warlocks, Bards, Rangers and Artificiers have their own unique way of learning spells.
just searched it up theyre made to protect against other terasques
thank the d&d lords
micro edge
i just asked google and it showed me a bunch of reddit posts
or edge
idk ngl
I didn't know there was a find a dm thing.
i just came up with a strategy to get my party out of a fight like 70% of the time

The resources in the bot post above provides eveyrhing you need to start learning D&D
tell the enemy if it can understand me that it will die in the blink of an eye if it attacks or doesnt do what i say and it will prolly listen if intimidation +3 on my character for being a ghost actually goes well if not then i cast minor illusion to make it appear like theyre in a black void long enough to get me and the party away
effectivly manipulating the enemy into thinking im god
then thats what the barbarian is for isnt it
lol
Just as a heads up, you'll want to move the discussion to #dnd-discussion.
This channel is more for learning the basics of dnd.

Hi
Doing a one shot right now to sign up dm me starting now
whats a oneshot
is it a good idea/possible to play as both DM and character with the essentials kit?
if its our first game ever
Basically dnd for one session only
At least that is the intention
hi new here
Such a thing is called a 'DMPC' when a DM tries to also be a player and it very, very rarely works out.
The DM knows the twists, the story, the stat blocks, where all the loot is. They already control the world, so trying to play a heroic PC in that world at the same time often leads to them being the 'main character'. They have too much meta knowledge and ability to make the game go the way they want.
This is different to a sidekick NPC which is a NPC in the party the DM might RP occaisonally or control in combat, in that the sidekick is that- a sidekick. They're not a hero and have no real say in the party's decisions. They can be a useful tool for the DM to occasionally feed information to the players, but ideally the sidekick remains very much a secondary character who has little affect on the party's decisions.
The good news is the DM can still have plenty fun- they're getting to constantly be active and engaged, can RP so many different NPCs, and control so many more creatures in combat, as well as decide how the players affect the story.
ok thanks i will pass it on to my group
so if you play with sidekicks is it a player that uses a sidekick or can the DM also use sidekick to be involved in the game?
The DM is always involved in the game. Players can also control and RP sidekicks if sidekicks are used. It's also best not to include too many sidekicks. The game is designed for 4 PCs. If you have less, sidekick NPCs can help balance the odds, but if you have more sidekick NPCs will slow down combat especially as more enemies will be needed to balance combat.
Hey there! Complete newcomer that is just dazzled by the idea of dnd here, can someone teach the basics?

How does the game work?
There’s a cool interactive tutorial here that does a good job of covering the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Im confused. So does the light property giving u a bonus attack in the 2024 or 2014 rules? Also nick is introduced in the 2024 rules correct?
This is cool!
In the 2014 rules “Two Weapon Fighting” was its own rule, that was based off using weapons with the light property. In 2024, the rule for making an extra attack with a second weapon is part of the light property itself.
Pardon me but im still rather confused
This was the rule in 2014:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
What is two weapon fighting exactly? Cuz from what i can remember it just adds your ability modifier to the second attack
There’s the rule about two-weapon fighting and then the two-weapon fighting fighting style
The 2024 version is basically the same rule, just now in a new place.
Here, under Light:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Properties
Wait also if u action surge do you get another bonus action?
No
No
Yeah
Yeah, and only for characters that have weapon mastery with a weapon that has that mastery property.
Neat, thanks
If you have weapon mastery with daggers, for example, then you can use the dagger’s mastery property, Nick.
Does nick refresh with action surge or also no
No
The Light property attack can be made only once per turn, regardless of whether Nick is involved.
I see, thanks
hi
i am stoopid
and im searching somewhere where i can generated modern style maps for roleplay/DnD

alr @echo kelp we wont do it here
Kk
Just curious
I believe if you're looking for free it is #looking-for-dm right? It gives you options
idk but ty
The paid games are only listed in #paid-looking-for-game
oh
We have #looking-for-players - this is DMs looking for folks to join their games
#looking-for-community - D&D community servers that may offer a variety of types of D&D games
#paid-looking-for-game - pay a DM to get a game
And then you can use the bot commands (see #find-a-game ) to post in #looking-for-dm to let folks you're looking for a game
that makes scence
also there are other places than here to look for games... facebook groups, reddit and for local in person games may want to try a comic/game shop because they usually have one shot events there
Thank you!
welcome
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.

Overall I am biased and tend to recommend Adventurers League the most to new players.
most of my luck has been on facebook groups
Any Facebook groups you can recommend me? I'm iffy with Facebook because of past experiences.
for in person games I did local DnD groups my state dnd, my city dnd... for all around and online D&D group finder
those were the facebook groups
there are quite a few group finder groups
I've found 2 in person game groups on them so far, both working out pretty good
with online games... well some can be flakey is my experience
Yea
As with anything else on the internet.
- Don’t share personal information.
- Don’t click random links.
- Stick to open publicly safe spaces.
If you’re looking for in person games, tabletop shops and libraries are my recommendations.
yeah, same a lot of game shops here host a lot of one shots
my in person games are people I met from there and on facebook
I’m really new and have no clue where to start😅

hey guys i’m new to the world of DnD. just trying to understand it at least
i don’t have a set. should i get the stormwreck isle set? or should i just get some dice and make everything else myself from paper and such?
I’m starting a D&D club at my school in the Netherlands (K12). I could use some advice from fellow teachers who are already running a club at their school.
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/educators might be some useful stuff here
Hii
Welcome!
The starter kits have everything you need if you want an easy jumping point.
They’re an especially good choice if no one in your group has played before.
Since they’re designed specifically for people new to D&D.
Gotta make your own there, I’m afraid.
Hey I’m new to D&D and I’m starting a campaign (as a player), I’ve already made a character but I was just wondering should I get some dice. We are doing it over discord and I can use D&D beyond.
heya, new to dbd, any tips for someone planning to multiclass into artificer / cleric?
roleplay and combat
hey new to dming but not dnd any advice to when palyers start figthing
We do have #dm-discussion for discussing DM topics but the purpose of games like D&D is to have fun. I don't think players fighting amongst themselves is fun.
Time to stop the game and discuss why they are fighting and enforce expectations and boundaries.
This may mean kicking one or more players from the game for failing to meet expectations.
ah crap
also idk how to use dice
might need some explanation like im 5 there
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
?tag new d20
The d20
In cases where the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game relies on rolls of a 20-sided die, a d20, to determine success or failure. Ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws are the three main kinds of d20 rolls, forming the core of the rules of the game. All three follow these simple steps.
If you make a d20 roll with advantage, roll two d20s and use the better result. Disadvantage is the opposite: roll two d20s and take the worse result instead.
The d20 is what you’ll roll the most.
The other dice are mostly used for damage.
And whatever you’re using to deal damage will say what to roll.
oh bless you
Hi i’m new and wanna learn
I would suggest reading the D&D rule book from D&D beyond
It’s free and gives you lots of info
New player, I was looking warlock invocation and was a bit confused by fiendish vigor. Does it basically make false life a cantrip since it doesn't use spell slots at all
Who me
Seems like the bot is down at the moment.
Free rules or basic rules
Both but it up to you

I need help creating a character
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
Purely basics, name, class, race, and alignment. The different spells and weapons/stats are confusing me. I've never actually played
Hi, I have loved D&D for a long time but couldn't get into it in India. I started listening to audiobooks and wanted to learn to play the game.
can anyone give me an intro
Have you added your ability scores yet?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
No
Welcome! #find-a-game has some good starter info, but did you have any specific questions?
I haven't done that because I don't really know how it's works? Maybe that's weird
There’s three official methods to do it, as explained in the link.
Which one you should use is a question for your DM.
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d recommend Stand Array or Point Cost.
But having those first will help when you start doing weapons and spells.
Well hello there 😌
I got one. The group is meeting tmrw but I think i was supposed to have a character. Idk how so I'm kinda rushing
I want to have SOMETHING but I have no clue what I'm doing
The standard array is the simplest option if you’re in a rush.
Oh I can’t help I’m clueless about this game lol, just joined :))
The table here has a suggested assignment for each class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#StandardArraybyClass
Okay thx
Then you’ll want to write down your ability modifier for each one as well:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#DetermineAbilityModifiers
Oh already lost me lol
And this is based on what?
How do I know which ones
Say you’ve got a 13 in STR.
Just find 13 on the left, then write down whatever’s on the right (which would be a +1).
Okay
Keep the two numbers separate.
Is there a finished sheet I can see as a reference, so I know what it's supposed to look like?
Alright, a friend of mine told me I should play this game and since I’m so greedy I should be a rogue that places some kind of curse that makes people lose items.. can’t remember what he called it >.> but now I’m here 😌 no idea how to play this game
You can find some here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets
Welcome! There’s some good info in #learn-to-play that can get you started.
Great thanks
Hello
So my party members consist of Cleric, Rogue, Barbarian and none of them want to change their class. I read in the 2024 handbook that you should have a spellcaster of some sort in the party and since I've never played the game before and all of the spellcaster roles had high complexity, which is the best for a beginner?
So I know a little about the game like making my character and that jazz, I don’t see in any posts in the looking for people stuff, are there no available campaigns at this moment
Honestly that party sounds pretty capable
I’ve have seen my mistake
As I some missed a pet
So should I just go with whatever class I would like to as long as my gm is fine with it?
If you're wanting to go with a spellcaster I'd probably go with wizard
Otherwise I'd ask your gm if they want you to go with a spellcaster or whatever else you'd like
Im more than happy to teach 5e over Discord if any newcomers are interested. Juat shoot me a PM 🙂
proceeds to die of 1d4 micro-organism damage
Hi I’m new. Working on a multiclass eladrin Druid with a criminal background. Would love to learn how to play. Ordered a set of dice too. Super excited bc I’ve been wanting to learn for years but no one seems interested in playing. Is there a group I can join?
Hello
Whats a good 1st level spell?
Other than Arcane armour, iceknife, false life, Healing elixir (which is ua) Sheild, find familliar, sleep
Also any that suck and I should remove
Bless
My bad should have clarified
Ok
Any I should have removed?
Im playing bladesinger btw
Absorb elements is gold for bladesingers. I'd probs ditch false life tbh
Why ditch false life?
Just personal preference.
How would I create a gambling background for a warlock?
Rewarded for won Ruined for lost
I know what I want to create but i don’t know how to write it
If you get what I mean
Name here's loved one died so they searched for unorthodox methods to gain power to gain revenge ect. ect,.
Paper is good but dnd beyond is good to start out
I’m partial to D&DBeyond, roll20 is another decent option if you want online tools
Using the physical sheet or making your own will always be the most customizable, however
Yup
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/122038766
Use this as inspiration and create your own from the same website. Whatever you do, don't create more than one, at very least strongly recommend to develop your main character for atleast a year (not joking) really sit down with yourself and think "What would I be in fantasy world" Be as brutal honest as you can about it.
count point to this,
you can make as many character concepts as you want
You do not need to spend a year developing a ‘Main’ character as you make a different one for every campaign you play in
Keep it simple to start with
Hello everyone, wanted to join this server to learn more about the game and character creation. Looks like a vibrant community , is there a specfic place I should start?
Depend what you’re looking for? Are you new to the game or just new to this community?
we have #looking-for-players where DMs post about their games and requirements. So you can play online with folks. If you want to make a post for yourself to looking for dm, you can find out out in #find-a-game
k
i just dunno what to do so im guessing i go to looking for players
wait what do i do to ask to join
If you are looking to find a game to play online, that is a great place to start. You can read through what people have posted and reply in the threads for ones you are interested in. You can say something like "I'd like to join", sure
Finding a game can take a long time, so you have to give yourself that patience.
Character sheet? By following the directions on making a character and selecting Ranger as the class.

late bloomer is crazy
Hey so can you use a bonus action with light property and nick all in one turn
The Light property attack can be made only once per turn.
All Nick does is change the timing of that attack, so that it's part of your action instead of a Bonus Action.
So that you can then use your Bonus Action for something else, like the Bonus Action from Dual Wielder.
what should i download on dnd beyond to get started?
hey gois. Does it allowed to have one sentient starting epuipment/wepon in a starting campaign
to be more specific free stuff. can’t afford anything atm
The free rules are already included in dndbeyond and are also linked in this channel’s pins!
Unless the DM says otherwise, by the rules your character only starts out with the equipment granted by your background and class
thank you
it is finaly official to me, have your OCs brother turned into a sentient item
Not exactly sure what you mean, but sentient items would fall under magic items generally, which would make them subject to DM approval. Homebrew items may receive more scrutiny as you’ll have to have both a rule change (starting equipment) and unofficial equipment approved.
oh this is just for my homebrew dnd Oc story... i just got this idea" " hey why not use your wizard OCs brother whos a wild magic sorcerer who got turned into a Sentient book."
Could make for a good scribes wizard.
Just going to put that in my character ideas book
New to the game.
I made a character sheet but that’s about it.

Hello, I'm new to the game, but I've heard of things about it, I wanted to get things started in DnD so I can start games with my GF as a DM, but since I'm still new I wanted to know if there's any recommendations as for where I should start.
There's some handy links above to get you going.
But did you have any specific questions?
Additionally, I'm mostly here to learn about dwarf culture though because I'd like to write a cookbook for my GF as a gift, mostly composed of dwarven cuisine, so if anyone here is a Dwarf enthusiast, I'd much appreciate it if you could lend me some knowledge 😄
Well, mostly I wanted to focus on the system of the game and how it works, moves, attacks, turns, damage, damage types, etc.
The D&D Free Rules is a good place to start, then.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Much appreciated, thanks y'all. 🙂
Dwarfs have poison resistance, so be careful 😉
Thank you

Ty
greatings, should have joined this group sooner. Been looking to get back into playing DnD again.
If I needed to look up beasts do you know which book that would be in?
Looking for stat blocks of CR 0 creatures for options with my find familiar spell. Not sure where to look tho
Creature stat blocks appear in a wild variety of books. There are some in the Player’s Handbook, plus there is the Monster Manual, Monsters of the Multiverse, Treasury of Dragons, Glory of the Giants, and some published adventures too. You can use D&D Beyond to filter for specific monsters to find what you are looking for, and even if you don’t have access to that stat block on their site it will at least tell you what book it’s from
Oh perfect thanks! I'll start with the hand book cuz I have that one!
Has the Ninja Character been removed from most game play? I remember using it long time ago when the guide was available but hard to find, then i was told that the build would become unaccepted in most campaigns.
“Ninja” is not a class or subclass in 5e. It never has been. There are many subclasses that could fit that theme, such as shadow monk or assassin rogue, but nothing that specifically used the name “ninja.” It could perhaps be possible that you were playing a homebrew class or an older edition of the game
It was probably an older edition at the time, which would be why i can't find it any longer, thank you.
so much to relearn.
closest would probably be Way of the Kensei monk, I think
Hello! Sorry if this is stupid but am I allowed to recieve suggestions from more experienced players here?
That's the general idea here.
Great! I'm a 7th level arcane trickster rouge right now- My main dps comes from using a sneak attack/nick/two weapon fighting/enhanced dual wielding. I was looking for suggestions as a new level is coming our way this next session. I was thinking about taking an 8th level in rouge and grabbing the shadow touched feat for some free spell slots or maybe something like inspiring leader. However I really wanted to close up some weaknesses my character has but am having issues really identifying weak points I could plug. If I screenshot my character sheet would you be willing to take a look at it and give some general advice?
That kinda of question is best suited for #character-discussion and you can make your sheet public so you just post the sharing link.
Perfect!
Hello there! Not sure how this usually work, so I'm just gonna jump in. Thanks for having me. 🙂
Does everyone know everyone? Or is it like an online convention?
More like an online convention

Do you have to create a new character for every campaign?
Most campaigns are different from each other - it's kind of expected to have a new set of actors (characters) for each new campaign.
And most DMs won't let you take your awesome and leveled up character into a brand new campaign starting at level 1
Is it usually based on the story that the DM has prepared?
A campaign is like a novel series - there is a major plot arc. Each game session can be a specific novel or parts of a novel.
There are official D&D adventure books and there are many 3rd party published adventure books that can be used for a campaign.
And then yes there are DMs who homebrew their own campaign (homebrew = self-created, not an official thing).
Because I see some players get a bit attached to their characters. I'm guessing it depends on how long the campaign is? Plus I hear that character making usually takes a long time.
I've always been under the impression that all campaigns are, to use your term, homebrew. 😮
There's plenty of published adventures but as soon as it hits the table and your characters start taking action, it's your own game. Plenty of people come up with their own ideas though.

Okay bet
I'm looking for a dnd game for Tuesday slot
party walks into the room
poison trap
everyone dies (for plot )
the dwarf gets bonged in the head by a big 700 ton rock or something
Speaking of poison, is alchohol considered a poison in DnD? Or is it just normal?
depends on the dm ig
Same story of the Elf that can't be put to sleep, so he gets hit in the head with a chair
The chair is actually a nuke in disguise
lmaooo yes please
My favorite kind of chairs
the ones that go boom, indeed
Are dwarves good scouts for rooms? Since they're pretty tough, wouldn't sending them in a room with buffs and a few pre-existing resistances make them good for clearing traps?
i wonder if ikea still has tha
they have poor eyesight
so it'll be like bruteforcing them into the room
i think that its poor eyesight, not sure
I mean, that's kind of the idea, for them to set off any and all traps
I read that they can see in the dark funnily enough, probably because of the whole living in underground systems
imagine the party is like
rogue: unconcious
the party: throws the dwarf into the obviously trapped room
gets bombarded by a million arrows whilst trying to turn the trap off so that the party could pass
EXACTLY, Just suit up the dwarf in some good armor and give him anything to reduce magic and physical damage
Making a paladin, worships the deity helm, god of protection, so I was thinking up backstory ideas, and I had a thought that he was in the temple to worship helm and it caught fire or smth like that and helm stepped in and protected him from it, then leading him to swear allegiance, is that okay for a backstory?
I don't actually know, do the deities actually exist in dnd or are they all made up by the people
Deities exist and are tangible in D&D, though the exact ones vary from setting to setting
So is that backstory alright then?
I will say that direct divine intervention is generally impossible (for various reasons, including upsetting the overgod Ao since Helm is a Forgotten Realms diety) but perhaps a mote of Helm’s power sent some rains your way, or some agents of Helm intervened on his behalf (I.e. angels).
Other than that the backstory is fine, I would just add some details on your character’s personality & reason for adventuring
Hey longshot but I'm a semi newbie to gming... And can already see how lacking the XP system or cr system is. Is there an alternative more effective 5e encounter building? Preferably one with scaling a creature in mind?
Good question for #dm-discussion but honestly every D&D table/game is different so encounter builder tools will generally feel fairly generic and imprecise.
CR is actually not that bad - just imprecise and something you start to figure out as you figure out your D&D game, your player's playstyle, the magical items they have, and figuring out your typical adventuring day for your game.
Cr doesn't account for severw difficulty however. I'm planning on my next campaign to have a homebrew that requires the party to rally an army so it'll need to be difficult.
Plus I also want that option I guess
I understand this is a feel it as you go scenario but a bit cautious after throwing a tsunami and killing a barbarian one time and the other killing my own godamn boss with my own godamn ally pc
I'll post the question in dm discussion though and continue it there
I need a basic rundown on how to play this game
Give this a try:

I already got some basic knowledge of how to play but where can I make a character sheet online?
DnDBeyond has an online character sheet tool

hello,
for people that play online how do you guys listen to the same music at the same time. we streamed youtube as a screenshare and while it worked it wasnt really ideal and just wondering if theres any other solutions for online play.
The virtual tabletop I use, Roll20 allows you to upload background music that plays for everyone in the game. It can be a little bit buggy occasionally, with some players not hearing the music if they join the game after the music has started.
I have also had success using Spotify's Jam feature, but I'm not sure how that works if not everyone is premium
thanks! i havent heard of this spotify jam feature, does it let at least 1 person control what everyone is listening to (like if i click skip/next does it skip for everyone?)
Yeah thats it
oh sweet ill look into this thanks
DUDE thank you, this spotify jam thing is exactly what i was looking for!
Hey I'm new to DnD and I'm just wondering as a warlock how do I picks spells for level 2
as in how do you add them or are you asking for advice on what to pick?
so I have the warlock spell list but I don't know how many I can take
or how many I can have active
the prepared spells column on the warlock table is how many you can have active, so at level 2 you can have 3 total
how many can I pick from the list upon leveling up
you can get 1 additional spell from level 1 to 2
2014 or 2024 rules?
Idk if its changed but id rather be reading the right place
yeah those will always be prepared and do not count against your total
yes
same answer with both, in 2014 rules the column is spells known, 2024 is spells prepared
so yeah should have made sure on which rules, sorry
For sure, but just wanted to double check for any further questions
My patron is the great old one- it says this "2nd detect thoughts, phantasmal force" I get these when I get level 2 spells at level 3?
those are additional options you can pick from when adding a spell as far as I know
to help keep things in order, you can always use dndbeyond for a character sheet and it will help with things like amounts of spells available
yes, you can trade one spell upon leveling up
So Dissonent Whispers and Tasha's Laughter are free
but detect thoughts and phantasmal force are just added to the potential list
If you're using the 2014 rules, your expanded spell list acts as additional spells you can choose to learn when you level up
If you're using the 2024 rules, your expanded spell list spells are permanently added to your list of known spells
Alright I'll talk to my DM
Whats the blood hunters class explained to me as a newbie ??🤔
They are a monster hunter that uses hemalurgic magic to empower themselves and curse their prey.
From a meta perspective, the class was designed by Critical Role's DM Matt Mercer and is widely considered underpowered when compared to official 5e options.
Alright thanks 🙏🏾
It is also considered homebrew by most standards, so talking with your DM about whether it is allowed or not before commiting is highly recommended
What about tiefling ?? I heard from a post they’re an interesting species ??
You can read about them in the free Basic Rules if you like
Gotchu
is dnd phb 2024 the "dnd 5.5e"?
Not officially but people call it that anyway.
hi guys can anyone briefly explain the game to me?
ok and also is Avrae adapted/support the new phb 2024?
Avrae is just a dice roller ain't it
Yep!
Does a bit more than just that.
The beauty of D&D are that any two games are completely different from one another. The best explanation I can give is that D&D is a cooperative storytelling game where a dungeon master (narrator/referee) along with usually 3-5 Players roleplay the experience of their characters. Most of my personal games start from small bounties or scavenger hunt and ramp up into battles for and/or against the gods
It’s really hard to explain D&D since it’s so roleplay centric and virtually every character yet is different and is played differently by their player
Do you have any suggestions of the servers you know that do voice (potentially webcam) or frequent of either or for good quality DND play/sessions? From your personal list, like mature audience sort of thing but fairly serious? (I know it's a loaded ask)
Check #looking-for-community for other D&D servers that may offer such games.
It's a simulation/adventure game containing rules and a referee that is able to bend those rules to allow unique situations to occure in the game world.
The value of this is that a referee can mold the rules of the game to accommodate whatever play experience the players and he wish to have.
While it does that, it also does an oodle of other things, including managing a character sheet, running initiative, and otherwise "quoting" whatever spells or monsters or features you want (and have access to).
It's a great tool, but fundamentally a dice roller is the most common usage of it. It'd take a bit of time getting to grips with it if you want it to do anything more.
a DM and (often multiple) Players come together to tell/experience a story that's not necessarily pre-scripted like books, movies, and comics, are done - In this, characters react in the moment, make decisions, and that alters how events transpire.
Whenever something comes into question such as attacking, or resisting a spell's effects, the Rules exist to say what happens, so we don't necessarily get bias or "I hit that" "did not" looping. The rules say how tough, fast, lethal, magical, skilled, strong, or any other adjective, things are.
It comes down to DM describing what's going on, Players describe what they do, DM describes consequences, Players describe what they do next, and it repeats. And in the game's world, each creature has statistics which determine what they can do, how well they can do it, and generally how powerful they are - Including characters.
Many servers will utilize voice if not voice/camera.
I am not in any other servers that fit your requirements, sorry. Most of the servers I am in are friend groups and not d&d focused.
I found some of those friends by sitting at open tables or public server games though, so I do recommend that process
Do you think being a pet spider should be optional or not?
I mean the main thing would be talking to your DM and the rest of your table about it, they may allow it
Still not a question for this channel
Fair, just thought if they were new, it's best to learn any questions about playable species and such are a good discussion with your DM and table.

Alright then! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules.
