No I'm not, it's just that the DM bend the rules and told us we could have a free feat level 1
Regardless of the race
oh ok, well again, what class
Ranger
Nah, too late
Also I decided to not go for sharpshooter or crossbow expert because I plan to pick one of them at level 4
I wanted something more.. flavor
it depends a lot on the dm and how often they use passive scores
i would've gone for sharpshooter tho, that max range without disadvantage is good
Yea indeed, that's the optimal choice
I hope I can read on lips often lol
i mean what is your character
Guess it's a feat that highly depends on the DM and the setup
yea
I sent you the let's roll sheet
My stats sucks tho
I recently discovered it, it's nice
yeah
so, i am currently creating an adventurer and i am just wondering, what things should i print on my character sheet? (that would be permanent, i am having a dnd campaign at my school and i am just wondering for my character what i should have on the printed paper) and how do i use features and traits
I use the ranger rules of 2024 btw
dont print stuff, just write it down incase it changes
everything you have can change over time
I'm new
Wait, should I go for Sharpshooter level 4 or do you recommend me to fix my stats and go for ASi
Because 2 stats at 13 triggers me
How do I play
no idea what ASi means
Ability Score Increase
oh
yeah those stats arent the greatest
So, either I go for sharpshooter at level 4 or fix stats
Thoughts on what's the best?
sharpshooter
Right, more dmg
character's name, proficiencies, and racial features
what about personality traits, bonds, ideals and so on?
or are they bound to change
I mean:
Before you make an attack with a ranged weapon that you are proficient with, you can choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If that attack hits, you add +10 to the attack's damage.
But yea also:
Attacking at long range doesn't impose disadvantage on your ranged weapon attack rolls.
Your ranged weapon attacks ignore half and three-quarters cover.
thats somethiny gou choose
Fair
Fair
everything there just blends together
Hey there can someone explain how the barbariam works?? Because from all i understand is that the more damage you take, you get like a damage boost is this correct??
that is not correct
no, when you attack or get attacked during rage it keeps going
if you dont, it stops
Oh alright
barbarians can Rage, which gives them resistance to slashing/bludgeoning/piercing damage. it also boosts their damage with melee weapons. it ends early if you go a full round without taking or dealing damage i believe
idk if you had to say that whole first part but ye it stops if they go a round without damage
Ohh thanks a lot for explaining it, me and my friend would like to start a campaing but never do, so i tought i could just learn abput stuff
theres the free basic rules

Alright i'll check it thanks foe the help
That's correct. The server doesn't allow gifs.
really? i thought it just didnt work
I have a question
What in the name of god's Green earth is iniciative and Why do we roll It?
its to see who starts first
initiative is the order you go in
Ok
I assume you mean Initiative. It determines who goes in what order during combat.
you roll a 13 and a goblin rolls 14, goblin gets the first turn
I've only ever seen how Critical Role does it, what about same roll?
I think you roll again?
same roll i think just those 2 reroll and see which is higher
keep doing that until one is higher
word, CR does higher Dex so wasn't sure
If a tie occurs, the DM decides the order among tied DM-controlled creatures, and the players decide the order among their tied characters. The DM can decide the order if the tie is between a monster and a player character. Optionally, the DM can have the tied characters and monsters each roll a d20 to determine the order, highest roll going first.
funny, the 2024 rules removed that last sentence
Oh, good call. That's from the 2014 Basic Rules, not 2024.
In my personal experience, the most common tie breaking method is to simply allow the creature with the highest dex score to go first. But the official rules just says to decide it however you/the DM wishes, as razorwing just posted
can anyone explain to me how subclasses work?
When you get to the right level in your class (often 3) you pick a subclass. Think of it as a specialisation. A thief and an assassin share many of the core rogue traits, but one becomes more skilled at theft and the other at murder.
Every player picks a subclass after a few levels. It's a specialization, which helps set your character apart from other people playing the same class.
For example, all Rogues are good at the usual Rogue business, but an Assassin subclass Rogue is especially good at the murder part.
Jinx.
Smurf you owe @wild onyx a soda
thank you 🙏
Hey everyone
Can anyone explain the whole of dnd I know the basic like what it is
Hey
Fantasy Rp
With rules and classes
No I know it’s fantasy rp I just meant how do you actually find people to play with I’m like completely new to it
Um you can look on discord in find game, or I you got some buds into it play in person
I know people who play it I can ask them but I don’t know if they’re doing it right now I can check rq?
Not new to DnD as a whole but I'm new to the server hi everyone

I’m new to DND and I’ve had a discord account for a while but I’m rarely on it so I wanted to learn I just joined today hello
Well then welcome and hope we all have a fun time
Ugh I'm trying to find a game but can't seem to find one in my timezone
Welcome to the official D&D server! If you're new to D&D as a whole, we'd recommend checking out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel.
Look for shared availability rather than shared time zones. You can also look beyond this server.
I'd stop worrying about specific timezones and instead see if a game maps to a time that you're available to play.
There are many online games with players from all over the world
They just happen to have overlapping availability to play a game together regardless of timezones
Hey guys new to DND
just watched Never stop blowing up from Dimension 20
It's more action movie themed, made me interested in DND
Is all of DND just as fun or is it the genre
Most games I see being advertised are being played at like midnight or super early in the morning for me, and I work full time so can't stay up that late
I'd say lots of us here believe it's fun, but how fun it is depends on how much you enjoy the gameplay and who you play with!
how dependent is it to the genre
never been into rpg
You could also look at Play By Post games (e.g. playing by sending text-based messages) - these may be a bit harder to come by and find a game. You might also try looking at other D&D servers in #looking-for-community as they may have other ways to play D&D that may better fit your schedule.
Do you like heroic fantasy? Then you'll probably have fun. Do you not like that genre? Then this may not be the game for you, but there are tons of other TTRPGs out there.
not sure
well the best way is to try it out I suppose
Expand your search to other places outside the server. I have a list of such options here.
If I have any questions I can come here right?
Yep.
Thank you!!!
Folks may direct you elsewhere if need be, but this is a good place if you don't see the appropriate channel.

Is anyone able to get in a call with me to help me make my first official character as I only have been using a trial character I made for my first time playing DND ever?
We don't have Voice Chats here due to previous misuse but if you have a specific question feel free to ask it - that way everyone can learn together.
So I can't go into an voice call with someone in DMS?
You can but we don't officially support that here is all I'm saying.
Got it I'll go to different servers to get help then but I'll stay joined
I'd recommend looking over the first chapter of the free basic rules as it explains, step by step, how to create a character
Ok
Character creation can be broken down into 4 general categories.
- Choosing a Class
- A class broadly describes a character’s special talents.
- Choosing a Race/Species
- A race/species is a character's lineage such as if someone is a Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Human, etc.
3.** Choosing a Background** - A background represents skills and languages that a character would have on top of the ones gained from their class and Race/Species
- Determining Ability Scores
- This represents as character's base stats.
stupid question, but anyways: In real DnD, potions don't work like in Baldur's Gate 3, do they? I mean you can't throw the potion on the ground shattering it and healing AoE?
Not according to the rules, no.
thank you
I need help with the scores and stats everything else I can do myself I just want to be in a VC doing it so it's easier
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
If you're making a character without a DM, you can just use Standard Array described above.
While Baldur's Gate 3's mechanics is based on D&D 5 edition. Some changes were made to provide a better video game experience.
Ok that's great and all but I have NO clue what 4d6 means or is
Learn common terms here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1026-common-terms-new-dungeons-dragons-players-should
There's no rolling involved with Standard Array: you have six numbers and six stats to assign them to as you like.
Good find, Zero!
OH ok thanks
Simplest approach is to use Standard Array like razorwing suggested.
Now I can make my own character
Are you using dnd beyond to create your character?

Hey, I'm new here. I joined because I'm looking to hire an artist to make a world map. What would be the best channel to send a request for that in?
#dnd-advertisements is the place to solicit/ask for hiring folks
you can drop some rice in a paper then try to retrace them its fun
Might want to check out #dnd-maps and see if an artist there interests you - you could potentially direct message them.
Is it breaking any rules to DM someone from the server?
No - but pinging people on the server without reason would be something we'd moderate. For further questions about server rules check out the Server Rules and if you need clarification, you can go to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator.
Thank you!
hiii! i am very much new to DnD i only ever watched people play it on youtube so i'm not 100% familiar with the rules, i heard this server is the best for finding a group online as i come from a country where anyone has barely heard of it. so any help would be much appreciated and thank you

Is there anywhere to see the new basic rules for free?
Wow, this should be pinned
2024 ones
!new
Is that the command?
?new
I think there is a free copy on Beyond
Thanks
but that might not be until the 17th
I'm always updating it and post it often enough that people can point to it fairly easily.
D'oh, oh well
The preview of the new D&D Free Rules went up yesterday.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ty
It will be expanded on the 17th with the remaining classes, plus more spells and feats.
D&D Free Rules (2024): https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Keep in mind that it's currently just a preview:
Get a Sneak Peek at the 2024 D&D Free Rules
We’re so excited to share the 2024 D&D Free Rules with you that we’ve released an early version containing four base classes for each of these classes! These player options are freely available under the Game Rules tab on D&D Beyond, as well as in the compendium:Base Classes: Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard
Subclasses: Life Domain, Champion, Thief, and Evoker
Species: Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, and Human
Backgrounds: Acolyte, Criminal, Sage, and Soldier
This early version of the free rules also includes 12 feats, 48 monsters, and 320 spells. When the 2024 Player’s Handbook sees its wide release on September 17, we’ll do a full release of the 2024 D&D Free Rules. This will include the remaining base classes—Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Sorcerer, and Warlock—as well as one subclass for each class. The full release will also contain more spells and feats.
Beat me to it.
So for sneak attack if I’m hidden and use another bonus action to attack do I apply sneak attack to the second attack?
Sneak Attack can only be applied once per turn
(Keep in mind this is distinct from once per round)
So if the first attack misses I can use it on the bonus action attack with like two daggers?
Yeah!
I’ve sometimes asked chat gpt like specific questions for dnd and I’ve caught it just lying to me a couple times
Can anyone teach me the works in the realm of dnd
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Oo thank u
Yeah ChatGPT isn't very useful for learning the rules. It'll get a lot of things wrong, especially subtle things that non-experienced players wouldn't notice
Think of language models as smart idiots, just like any other computer that does exactly what you prompt it to do - they say the most likely thing, they sound right at a glance. Not very useful for DND, problematic in other contexts.
I'd recommend you get to know D&D yourself. Offloading the understanding is more likely to cause issues than make things smoother.
hello!
how does the divine soul sorcerer class work? and could you have a divine soul tiefling?
I am
too new at this
I know some bits about how people play the game but I'm not familiar on how all this works
There’s nothing barring it in the rules. You can pick any combination of race and class that your dm allows.
my dm’s asleep rn but i’ll ask tomorrow
how would one go about writing a back story for that character
in need of someone helping me with learning the basics of wizard and to look over my character sheet !!

Have you looked over the Wizard class page yet?
No i haven’t, I haven’t done much research because my DM does literally everything for me 🥲 but will do now! i just started watching some yt videos aswell
However you’d wish. At some point you and/or your heritage as been touched by both the upper and lower planes. You can include those circumstances in your backstory but you don’t necessarily have to. For example, for many tieflings their infernal heritage was so long ago so as to not be relevant in their day-to-day life. In my opinion, a good backstory should include at least 3 things:
- Who your character is
- What their personality is like
- Why they are adventuring
If you feel answering the questions of their heritage are relevant to those elements feel free to include them in
Check my reply to Vionelle for some additional help, the basic rules will tell you all you need to know about the Wizard class
thank you!! i’ll keep that in mind
How does flight work? Like variant tiefling. Are there any rules according to balancing?
I’ll summarize the PHB (p.191) & Basic Rules (Ch. 9) for flying rules
- If you have a fly speed, you have omnidirectional movement
- If you have multiple movement speeds, using 1 depletes the movement you have remaining for other fly speeds. For example, say you have a walk speed of 30 ft and a fly speed of 35 ft. If you walk 30 ft, you will have 5 ft remaining to fly. Likewise, if you fly 35 ft, you can’t walk any further.
- If you are knocked prone, are reduced to 0 speed, or otherwise cannot move, you fall instantly. You don’t fall if you have the ability to hover (i.e. Demilich statblock) or are held in the air w/ magic (i.e. fly spell)
Can anyone tell me more of what Lawfull Evil, or Lawfull Good mean?
Have you looked at the section on alignment
I don't belive so, thank you
I mostly do a neutral so I haven't gotten into much detail yet
https://youtu.be/uBsG90wfC4M?si=Ejcjt79v4g8MB4w7 he’s a video on personality, bonds, flaws, ideals that IMO make for a more rounded character
so glad they got rid of it in 2024. so exhausting trying to fit a perfectly fine OC i to a box
well, alignment is still existing and referenced, just still isn't a fundamental hard-coded rule as to many spells and items.
It's a descriptor, and indicator, and IMO is fine as such
Hi I need help making my first character
What you stuck on
I would try the channel #character-discussion
Thank you
welcome!
is the alternate variant cover for the new 2024 phb limited edition? or will they be available forever?
Yes it's limited edition, no it won't be permanently available

how do i find a group
See that post just above? Start there.
Does Anyone know if they have online like thru discord PnP DnD? Like on camrea with a DM and new campaign?
As a beginner can i make like the most stupidest character?
What do you mean by that exactly?
Im a paladin who's god is mayonaise in an escalator
Why would you want to? Just out of curiosity
Idk im always thinking about stupid memes
You certainly could, but the sillier your character, the less likely a DM will be willing to add you to their group or approve it.
I feel that, I wanted to make a rogue who is bad at sneaking. Like will make it thru a window but step on the cat
that’s actually not too bad lol
I just thought of a idea
A sorcerer squirrel who's weapon is a mystical Wendy's Baconater
And he can sometimes fling giant gummy bears with knifes
While having joke characters can definitely be fun, it is important to consider the long term circumstances as well.
Will the character still be fun to play several months into a long term campaign?
Very much so
Im a squirrel>:)
Apologies for "shooting down" another of your ideas, but if you're looking to reliably find a game, it's highly recommended to stick with the content that already exists.
For example, there's no "squirrel" race, so you'd be practically making that up. Many DMs will consider this a big red flag.
Can the same be said about your group or DM?
Welp im cooked☠️
If not, consider giving the character more depth, even a if it means just having wider a variety of jokes.
Indeed, it may be fun for a one-off, or if you find a golden campaign that's perfectly catered to that style of play. However, D&D tends to appeal to a specific kind(s) of fantasy that is fairly self-contained. Asking to add extranarrative items like "gummy bears" and "baconators" and "escalators" are not likely to mesh with the immersion of the game
I'd recommend taking a look at the species, classes, and abilities that already exist, then building a character that you find fun out of them. This way, you're already using the base rules that exist in the game, and don't have to force your play group to adapt to your homebrew ideas.
Ok thanks!!
Is it possible to make a Elf Barbarian that yearns for the sweet release of death bc of the thousands if years it has lived and thus he keeps putting himself in dangerous situations?
Maybe tone it down to 100s, elves in most D&D settings have a life expectancy of ~750
Ok so everything but make it hundreds of years instead of thousands?
Im gonna put it as 450 years
Sure! That's a lot more reliable when it comes to a character idea. An important thing to keep in mind with concepts like that, though, is not to make a character that makes the game harder for your teammates.
For example:
-
Elf that is willing to fight dangerous foes without fear because if they die, they die in glory = good!
-
Elf that actively picks fights with everyone they meet in order to "seek death" at every step = bad
Isn't viking and barbarian basically the same thing?
A Barbarian in terms of DnD is a class, which means that it's something that grants your character abilities.
A viking is more of an aesthetic or vibe, based on a historical people.
A viking could make a great Barbarian! But they're not necessarily related.
Hey is anyone free tomorrow evening GMT to give me a hand creating (to a good quality) my first DnD character?
You're more than welcome to ask questions in this chat as you go through the character building steps
We'll be happy to help here
@timid locust thanks friend. Il be sure to swing by!
😭 After an entire year I finally found a group only for them to get rid of me less than 24h later because I was matching pfp's with someone
Ig I'm back to looking
They said that to you? And there was nothing else awry?
Oh nah☠️
Basically I joined their server and a member complimented my pfp yk
So I said "Oh I wouldn't usually choose something like that, I'm just matching with my ex"
So this one person was uncomfortable bc I brought up my ex but I didn't even talk about him? And it wasn't unprompted either- they did talk about my profile
Here's a question WHY WOULD YOU MATCH WITH YOUR EX😭
And due to them being uncomfortable (although they didn't even know me) I got kicked out as it's important for the group to click and they didn't "click" with me
I don't wanna talk about it 😭
Hey wanna join my group my group only consists my friend and me😭
I mean sure
I was up until 4am working on my character sheet today and I'm like rly frustrated/sad because it was all kinda for nothing
The DM literally told me I didn't do anything wrong/my character's were good and I was a nice person so I am just like ???? If I didn't do anything wrong then why am I being punished for another person's problem
FR
Anyway uh do you have a server or something? Also bc of timezones it might be hard finding actual like- dates/times yk
Oof
I'm from Germany (UTC+2) and due to having school and not being able to VC past 10pm (Or midnight on saturdays Ig) I am like fairly limited in terms of which groups I can join
I currently dont have a server
Seeing as most people are from america which is like 7 hours before my current time
Im from The Philippines
So you're 6 hours in "the future"
Basically
Hey everyone newbie here, was wondering how I could put a character together, had an idea for Duck-person who's a sword/Spell user, but not to sure Stat wise on how to build that, any advice?
Have you looked over the class options?
I have but I'm torn between a wizard or a paladin.
Wizards are pretty rubbish with weapons generally. Paladins are a decent blend of might and magic, though.
As for a duck, there's no official race like that, but you could pick an existing race with the traits you want and just describe it as duck-like.
Variant human.
So like a Kenku?
A Kenku or an Aaracokra if you're looking for already bird inspired species.
But fair warning: trying to flavor your character as a duck person will be severely limiting your pool of potential games. Many DMs try to stick to official species.
Owlin maybe, as well.
But yeah, Dosh makes a good point!
Are subspecies not a thing? Genuinely asking?
Not for all species.
Kenku are already crow-like (or raven-like) as is, so that'd probably be an easy lift.
Cool that'll workout well then
So a Kenku/Paladin. I like that, still fits around my player idea.
How do I do that?

What are all musical instruments?
Thank you
Unfortunately this server doesn't have any voice chat, and we get dozens of new players every day. It's simply not feasible for us to get on voice for a few hours to go through the game for anyone who needs assistance.
Instead, we recommend reading through the rules and coming back to chat about things you have difficulty understanding. We'd be glad to answer any specific questions you have.
Baldur's Gate is a great way to get started, and to learn if you will have interest in this hobby, but you can't assume you'll know how to play the tabletop game just from playing the video game
The video game is built on the rules, but they changed enough that you can't jump into a tabletop game and expect it to work identically. It's worth reviewing the rules in some way, shape, or form before trying to join a group.
Baldur's gate changed a great deal about the rules to make it work smoother as a video game, and they also automated many processes for you, which you will have to do manually when playing the tabletop game. As such, it will be very valuable for you to still read through the basic rules before jumping into a game
Okay I will look into it more

It is a tabletop role playing game. It is played with pen and paper, or the digital equivalent there of, and your imagination
Are bearkin a homebrew or an official race?
Homebrew.
You can find the official ones (as well as some third-party entries) here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
Ooooh nice! Thank you, that's a lot of help
are sorcerers magical abilities based off their charisma stat?
Bearfolk, that's the one I was looking for
personality wise I would say he's quite charismatic with some people but sometimes he's a little self absorbed and i'm not sure thats a very charismatic trait
God why are the books so expensive
A person can be self-absorbed and still have a magnetic personality, a winning smile, a compelling voice and a strong will.
okay thank you!
Or put it another way, charming isn't the same as good.
well he's good, the best way to put it is he's a big chatter box and forgets to let other people talk
lol my wolf-folk is the opposite. She barely talks so would let someone talk forever at her
so.. how do i start getting into this game??

Yeah, the best way if you have a few minutes to read through them is to read the rules. It does a good job of explaining how the game works

Hello
Hey there I am new to DND
But I had an idea for a game
Anyone wants to play a fast and furious themed game. Similar to the peak like fast five or maybe tokyo drift?
Is this correct for DND, not sure
The Descent into Avernus hardcover adventure has the party mount up on Avernian War Machines which are essentially militarised race cars/trucks and fight other gangs with similar machines, so that kind of vehicle combat can definitely be done
Hello, I'm new here, my name is Frost (character) and I wanted to start developing my skills, is there a master available?
I have a question. Can someone explain me the D&D alignments?
Have you put a character together already?
now yes
Broadly, how a character's actions are seen by the world on the scales of lawful to chaotic, and good to evil. More here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1489-alignment-101-different-approaches-and-ways-to
Why not pop to #character-discussion and share what you've come up with?
Thank you
hi l am new to this my friend from england suggested this game and l tried to look up to it l tried to understand best l can but there still too much l dont know and sincce l am not a native please correct me if l say something wrong

Hey guys how do i write down proficiency bonus' for skills from backrounds and race on a character sheet? im very new lol
I am on page 12 and I still have no idea how to do any of this I don’t even know how dices work and I’ve read the full section on them
It's simple once broken down.
They're referred to as dX. So a d4 is a 4 sided die, a d6 is a 6 sided die, and so on.
Whenever something says something like "1d8 damage", you roll a d8, an eight sided die, and the result is that much damage. So instead of fixed values, they're a random value within that range, rolled every time they're called for.
So if I roll a 8 I take 8 damage?
More like, if a goblin attacks you, and hits you, with their scimitar, they do damage to you, and since goblins do 1d6+2 damage when they hit with a scimitar, we would roll a 6 sided die, add 2 to the rolled number, and that result is how much damage you take.
Or if you attack something, and hit, with - let's say a Mace - you would roll a six sided die, add your Strength modifier to the roll, and deal that much damage to whatever you hit.
Other weapons, some spells, can have different sizes of die, different amounts of dice, and have some unique properties
Essentially, you roll dice when the rules/your abilities tell you to roll dice
And add anything it tells you
You'll mostly roll the d20 for things other than damage
Whenever something says "XdY", roll X amount of Y sided dice. So when a Fireball is cast, it doesn't have a set damage - you roll eight six-sided dice, and that's the damage that fireball deals this casting.
This is all very complicated but I’m starting to learn
D&D (at least 2014/2024 D&D) is still somewhat simple compared to some other systems, especially older ones 😅
I need help I’m trying to figure out which one I should do the 2024 edition for species and classes or the 2014 edition
I would really appreciate the help
I mean I am brand new like a new born to this

Yeah dont let the fact that there are more complicated systems out there let you feel any less acomplished for learning 5e, there IS a lot to read
How complicated is dnd?
An important clarification is going to be
Things do what they say they do.
So, for example, you can't instantly kill someone without a thing that explicitly says it does that, or otherwise dealing damage to kill them with.
An infamous example is a Create Water spell filling someone's lungs. The spell doesn't say it can do that, it cannot do that.
Definitely not an easy question to answer and Im sure we'll be seeing many people having the same issue.
For the sake of having as many options as possible, I'd learn 2014 since the free rules for that one have more available at the moment
If you want to instantly kill something, you would need something like a Power Word Kill spell, and for the target to have few enough hit points for the spell to work.
But you need to be at minimum 17th level or higher to even attain that spell in the first place, and only for a few classes.
🤔
D&D is complicated-ish. There are a lot of rules, but the average player doesn't need to know all of them
Basically. And specific overrules general.
For example, a general rule is "melee attacks use Strength, ranged attacks use Dexterity."
A melee weapon such as a Dagger has the Finesse property, which says you can use Strength or Dexterity. This overrides the general rule, letting you stab with a dagger and use your Dexterity for it.
If you just have an idea of who you want to roleplay as, and can fill out all the boxes on your character sheet, thats all you need to begin. learning the rules can happen at the table
What character sheet 😐
Your Character Sheet is an a4 page that holds all the info regarding your character
You can make one either through DDB, or edit a PDF directly from here:
https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/DnD_5E_CharacterSheet_FormFillable.pdf
A character sheet is a format of lots of boxes to put information in, so that you know your character's Game Statistics. So you know how hard they are to hit, how well they dodge, take hits, how smart wise or charismatic they are, and so on.
Do I have to fill out all the pages?
can someone please teach me how to play and like what to do to begin playing
cuz i really wanna play it seems like lots of fun
i just have no clue how to or where to start

I have another question now granted I’m still pretty unsure of it however, if I only choose a race from the 2014 edition because I know there’s some good options out there Because I’m really unsure of it because I have the basic rules from 2014 edition/players handbook 2014 with the races with it then I have Elemental Evil Player's Companion
Sorry, what’s the question there? 😅
If you only choose one of those races, then what?
Not sure really
It’s frustrating for me
I probably should have done some research on DND before even joining this server I'm beyond confused
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages for useful links and resources to help you learn D&D.
Then ask specific questions here as you're learning and we can help answer them.
That is.. VERY handy
Ty!
Sigh 😔
Hey guys im trying to think of a funny quirk for a character im making for a campaign, first time playing and i want some ideas please
Pick any one you like. Whatever helps you tell the story you want to tell. It’s all good.
I'd suggest not worrying about "best" options and instead look at what sounds fun to you.
Then make a character based on that and try it out.
What’s the campaign about? What kind of character did you have in mind?
D&D is about playing a collaborative storytelling RPG game with friends.
So pick some character concept that sounds fun to you and go have fun with your friends (or internet strangers who may become D&D friends).
But the point is to have fun
I often like to take inspiration from characters from books/shows ive enjoyed
I don’t even know what I wanna do because I have the 2014 edition of the basic rules and the 2024 edition
But I do have some books for inspiration
just go 2014. more people overall are using those rules than the 2024 rules at the moment, so its the safer bet imo
It’s just I was really excited about playing it. It’s a fantasy role-playing game
for sure, nothing better
And honestly, I really like dnd I like the the fact there’s variety and so many things you can do
What's a character from some media that you watched/read that really was interesting to you?
Think of what class they might be in D&D
Well, I don’t know if this would help, but I don’t know if you know this I kinda of have the wings of fire books
Okay so dragon-like characters? Maybe try a dragonborn paladin.
Or try a beastmaster ranger with a psudodragon beast companion (with DM approval)
There's ways to get some dragony-flavor into your D&D games as a player character
Well, I have also another book about with wolves And a book about the marvels of animal behavior growing up protected animals
Maybe be a druid with their amazing wildshape abilities
Charlie Bone and the castle of mirrors another book I have is the grave robber apprentice by Allan Stratton
I'm a totally green player looking to learn the game.

I have stuffed animals of a black and white cat tiger, a purple beetle, and a blue macaw a crocodile
For TV shows well
Think about what those character personalities are like and what D&D class might fit them.
Then try making a character based off that.
Perhaps just pick one source of inspiration that you feel would mesh best into a ttrpg/fantasy setting
?

Yeah
Those TV shows that watch which a lot of them are kind of fantasy themed or like action adventure
I don’t know if I can use those for inspiration for D&D
Thoughts
A lot of those are tough, but a few would be easy. Puss in Boots would probably be a tabaxi swashbuckler. Aang would probably be a four elements monk. Finn is just a human fighter, maybe champion?
You might share that list in #character-discussion and get more feedback.
I’m not sure, but those are the books I have and the TV show that I watch Tell me some inspiration for D&D
Yeah
Did I hear about find local DND here somehow or something?
greeting
Hey everyone how ya doing
There is no single best class, because each class is the best at something different. If you can be specific about what you want to do mechanically or thematically, then there might be a best class at helping you achieve that goal, but just in general, the classes cover too wide of a range of playstyles and game mechanics to fairly compare them against each other
In terms of favorites, I enjoy rangers and Druids, but simply because it fits my interests. Otherwise there’s kinda a class that’s “best” for lots of stuff.
Simple, there is actually none. Is either how they used, it can be a glasscannon or anything. Just terms of build.
Like they already said, there's classes that are the best at particular things but no definite best overall class. My personal favorites are paladin, rogue and sorcerer though
Paladins can do basically everything (in terms of combat) since they can tank with their wicked high AC, do crazy damage with their smites and they're no slouch with heals
Sorcerer is a swiss army knife with spells, in and out of combat
And rogues are just handy to have if there's ever a time where you need to lockpick, pickpocket, scout etc, and they're very capable in combat too
Heyy can someone explain to me the dices like initiative and all
rouge, like the color?
Have you read up on the basic rules about initiative yet?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#Initiative
The dice are more broad, but D&D uses a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and d100 for various things throughout the game. A dX just means a die with X number of sides. The most commonly used is the d20, which is used for skill checks, attack rolls, saves, etc.
as starofthelight said, d20s are the workhorse dice used for deciding the outcomes of many events
the rest of the dice are usually used for things like calculating damage
Need help on what??
Check out #learn-to-play and the resources linked to in the pinned messages here in this channel.
Then feel free to ask us specific questions.
Yeah I did that but everything is so overwhelming
Then take it a bit at a time. Start with character creation (Chapter 1 in the free basic rules).
Ive been playing this game for years and I don't have everything memorized - you're not expected to.
I still mess stuff up - it's okay.
Thanks
What kind of character do you think you'd like to play?
I dunno, because I know nothing about what kind of characters you can make
But atleast once I find out I can draw him
Let's start with here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
And here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
Why are the emojis I send getting deleted
Start with the race/species and class

Because it's spamming and they aren't always read correctly by screenreaders some folks use to participate here (also that's an off-topic question - if you wish the get clarification on server rules or a moderation action, please go to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator).
Oh okay thank you
hello im trying to make a character sheet but idk what to put on the other stuff help me pls 😭

Hello you know where I can play free and online D&D?
I ask why I have never played it and I would like to, and if you can explain me also what it consists?

Welcome! In the briefest terms, D&D is a collaborative storytelling tabletop roleplaying game. You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules as well as a more detailed rundown of what D&D is. They also contain a Dyno post with a little “demo” of D&D. I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice.
As for finding an online game, in this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). However, the wider you search the better chances you have of finding the right game for you. Outside of this server I recommend checking out Reddit’s r/lfg subreddit or D&D Facebook groups in/around your timezone.
While you’re in this server you can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Hi
Hello, I'm completely new to DnD and have never played a game before. I have an idea of how the game works and after almost 30 years of being a gamer and fantasy nerd, I'm finally trying it. Any tips to get started would be appreciated.

@dire igloo ok, so catching up
I’m looking at my dexterity table and I have a modifier of +2
Check your stats on the sheet and look after any bonuses on them that seem unusual
And a misc bonus of 1
Ok, when you check your Dexterity stat for info, it should open a panel
Modifiers are based on the stat.
10 is base
12 is +1
14 is +2
16 is +3
Ohhh that YouTube video is rlly helpful thank god I watched it
BUT MY DEXTERITY IS AN ODD NUMBER WHY DOES IT HAVE A PLUS????
Ok, you got a Misc Bonus of +1, this is either from your background or from another source
Chill, take it easy
10 AND 11 are +0
12 AND 13 are +1
etc
Stats will always have a plus modifier if they're at least 12 or higher
If your DEX is 15, the modifier is +2
Your stats get an increase on modifiers each 2 points
10 - 11 is +0
12 -13 +1 and so on
It's a lot to take in. Don't expect yourself to understand a game literally decades in the making over the course of a morning
Omfg I found the reason 💀
oh snap
Well then?
I put increase the three scores on the ability scores
Thats from your background
I feel like that is a diva snap moment
Or from your race
Ok, go to your Character Builder, its the gear icon
Uh huh
Its a gear wheel, you know
Yeah
A circle with squarey things around it
Then what
I just realized now is in a way a REALLY rough time to try to learn dndbeyond since a) everything JUST changed b) there are multiple versions of the game available and c) there are still bugs being worked out with the new content xD
Srsly??? NO WONDER IM STRUGGLIGN OUT HERE
this
Check your background and race, see from which you have the Ability Score feature
Its ok, just take it easy
We are here to help
But Rikky, Caps lock is cruise control for cool /s
An incantation in an ancient tongue...
It says the criminal background allows me to choose the up the scores on dex, con, and cha by two or one
My patience usually runs like cold iron through the snow
"An older code, but it checks out."
Edgy /j
Best not to test how i bend tho
Double meaning
A woman asked a barkeep for a double entendre so he gave it to her.
Ah gotcha
I work as a drug counselor... lol I have learned to have patience lol
Ok good. Then you are set.
What you gotta do is have your Charisma usually set the highest
What level are you starting at?
1
Ooo old man /j
Is this for a specific game or are you just practicing?
lol, yep
Ok, ideal is to have 16 Charisma for start
What is your current base Charisma when you check Ability Stats on character builder?
To be honest, I was srsly all happy and shi cuz I was so excited to make my first dnd character 💀
Thats good everyone is
It’s at uhh
I always love making new characters too
15
it does get easier the more you practice
I have a modifier of plus 2
Ok good, then you want to put 1 more from your race/background on it
Not a problem. I was just curious if it was a character that was specifically going to be used with a certain DM
Wait why is my plus two modifier not adding up to the charisma????
That's not how it works
WAIT
- 2 is the modifier to other abilities
It will add after refreshing the page
Oh Goddamit I thought I solved the problem
If I have a 14 in DEX whenever I roll a skill that uses DEX (acrobatics/ stealth etc) that roll will be MODIFIED with a +2
I feel like a child being teached on math by my father 💀
Each stat has a number. Depending on that number, they have a modifier. Your background/race bonus goes on the stat number
Your modifier is a bonus that is based depending on how high the stat itself is
The modifiers are used for different features or abilities to scale them in power
The Bard uses Charisma as their modifier for casting spells, making the DC saving throws harder for enemies when the Charisma stat is higher as well
Ohhh
If your Charisma is at 15, your modifier is +2
Leveling Charisma to 16 means your modifier changes to +3
What if my hit point type is fixed
Each 2 points on a stat increases the modifier
10-11 +0
12-13 +1
14-15 +2
Your hit points are based on the die of your class + the modifier of your Constitution stat
The more you level, the more hp you get
Ohhhh
Your origin increases affect the Ability Score. Then, the Modifier is derived from how high (or low) the Score is.
If your Hit Points are set to Fixed, it'll automatically calculate your HP for you.
Thank u so much for being patient with me 🙂↕️🙂↕️🙂↕️
What class?
Bard
Bard
No worries, what else can i help you with? Im still at your service
I’m still trying to decode on my other stuff if there’s something wrong 💀
What if my skills are medicine, arcana and persuasion
For starters, pump that Charisma to get a total of 16 and make sure your Dex and Con are also around 14 or so, if possible
Yep, so you do want big Charisma to make your spells difficult to avoid the effect of
And your hit die is a d8. At 1st level, your HP is 8 + your Constitution modifier.
using Fixed HP, every level thereafter will increase your HP by 5 + your Constitution modifier.
If your Constitution modifier ever changes, it retroactively affects your HP. For example, if your Con Mod increases by 1, your max HP increases by 1 for every level you have.
Does that affect anything or
These are good skills
Yes, they do
So it’s good to keep them?
well, they govern the fact that your character is proficient in those skills. Whenever your DM has you make an ability check that uses any of those skills, you get to add your Proficiency Bonus to the check.
So do I keep them or tweak them a bit?
Medicine is made to check the condition of a target and maybe stabilize them if they are dying
Arcana is made to check the presence of magic or quality of magical items
Persuassion is used to interact in social discussions or persuade targets to influence them in a certain way (most commonnly with NPCs)
Depends where your character revolves
Why do they need these skills?
Or how did they get them?
This usually is player preference in some cases
Since they’re a criminal i thought the skills would be useful
Medicine for self healing arcana for like pawn shops type stuff and persuasion is for yk
They can be good skills, but maybe they are not fit for a Criminal
😨
Those seem fine to me
It's whatever works for your character
There's no one right answer
This is where character creation is fun
"How did a Criminal learn medicine? Are they a retired war medic or priest?"
Yah, as Ratat said
This is about preference
But there’s no like section on where I have to put it
So I kinda half assed it basically 💀
You select Skill Proficiencies with your Background
You can edit it
Makes sense. After all, not so easy to walk into a lawful doctor's office right after a heist or mugging gone bad... It's nice to know of any magic weirdness acting as obstacles... And persuasion is always nice, and can work better than lies or threats.
thank the gods
Like those ability scores or r u talking ab something else??
No, not Ability Scores
Background
well, background and class give you skill proficiencies
O nvm I found it
Good job!
Stealth and sleight of hand
@dire igloo
If you haven't already, I would highly recommend reading chapter 1 of the new free basic rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game
The 2024 rules have been rewritten from their original version which was made in 2014, and they are now far simple and far more in depth for beginners
That’s what I got
O Alr let me check it out rq
Ok, that is fit for a Criminal, you need quick hands and to remain unseen
That would be most wise
I’m gonna have a stroke while reading this 💀
If you need help with anything else, Kar?
It's up to them. Remember they're a Bard, so their first choices still fit.
Especially if they go with the "I wasn't the sneak thief of the criminal racket we had" route.
Of course, im merely trying to point out how to give the character more sense
In the end, they know best what they want
I’m reading the book to try and fix my cha
Idk how to get it up to 16 🙂↕️
Ok, i wish you luck. Take care and read carefully
Go to Character Builder
You have the rules open?
The website or the app
possibly odd question.. but in what order would one suggest buying all the sourcebooks in order of priority? is there a list somewhere?
Either is fine
Players Handbook, always
As a player or as a DM?
Then?
as a player
Look
Basically, pick whatever skill proficiencies you want.
Pump your Primary Ability to the sky. As a Bard, it's Charisma, which affects your spells, so it's important.
Using either Standard Array or Point Buy lets you get a 15 in charisma off the bat.
Then you use your Origin to give +2 charisma and +1 whatever else. Now you have 17 charisma, giving a +3 charisma modifier.
I believe there is a guide in #learn-to-play
Player's Handbook (2024) is the core, then Tasha's and Xanathar's are both great supplementary options
Check your Abilities category in the builder
If your base Cha is 15, you will need a bonus to make it 16, so check your Ability Score feature which helps you pick one option to increase stats
Its either on Race or Background
thank you 🙂
If you are by 2024 rules, its on Background most likely
Alrrr
gotcha 🙂 I already have the 2014.. is the 2024 worth the upgrade?
If you want to switch over, quality of life has severely improved, its much better
I'd say so. It overwrites a lot of the base rules from the 14 set
I did it
It's also a loooot of buffs and fixes tbh
Its going to come down to what group you are playing with. I personally thing the 2024 rules are much better, but you won't be allowed to use the 2024 rules if everyone else in your group is using the 2014 ones.
Keep in mind, some classes, subclasses and features are changed, as well as races
thanks you guys 🙂
Good job!
If you're starting a new game and you know the DM is using the 24 rules, it's a no brainer
Are you sure you picked the right one?
Let me send u a screenshot Holdon
Send me a screenshot of the class page
Did it
went the full video playlist (twice) and i think i know the basics now. there is sometihng im abit confused about tho
while checking classes i couldnt help but notice the fact that there are classes where i can check their stats for free and ones that are only if you have the book. are those classes like locked in a sense? can you not use them unless you have the book?
Some content is only available for purchase, yes.
There are some free rules for everyone to learn about the game, which includes some subclasses
But the rest are locked behind actually buying the book
ah got it
kinda feel like i have to see a game actually being played to figure this out 😭
You can find recorded games on YouTube and Twitch, and possibly some live ones. D&D has its own category on Twitch, even! https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons
Yes that’s me 100% I’ve been watching live games on YouTube. Only thing I’m confused about is the character sheet idk why
exactly honestly tempted to take a pre-made one but idk if that's allowed nor do i really want to just use an already made consept
Yeah I’d rather try to learn it but taking information in for me isn’t easy. If I were to try and take a pre made one out I feel like I wouldn’t learn anything cause I’d still be looking at something with a bunch of random stuff on it.
My ex showed me the character sheet and I tried my best to learn it but I couldn’t even get it then when someone was actually showing me
Like I wanna learn this so badly but it seems so complicated I feel like I might just be overthinking it
So, the game of D&D is currently in the process of updating some of its rules, and releasing a new version of the player's handbook with lots of changes from the original one. This new players handbook was available early for certain people as of September 3rd, but will be available to the general public on September 17th. On D&D Beyond right now, they revealed 4 of these updated classes for free on september 3rd, as a bit of a preview for the final book, but on september 17th, you'll be able to access all of the classes in that new player's handbook for free. You will only be able to use 1 subclass for each class still, unless you purchase the full book, but none of the actual classes will be locked off anymore. You can also still view the 2014 versions of all of the classes for free, if you want a point of reference to use before the 17th
OH!
amazing thx for letting me know
You can check it out here!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
You could watch JRWI, it's hella funny and crispy's tavern is also nice
I’ve got the basics, unfortunately, I’m unable to find a game In my time zone. Any tips?
Focus on shared availability rather than shared time zone. You could also be on the lookout for text-based games, which are often asynchronous, or westmarches games (advertised in #looking-for-community), which are arranged more as drop-in sessions.
You can also look elsewhere outside of this server.
Did you try checking out local game/comic books shops? a lot of them will hold one shot events and such where you can meet other players? Also I found online and in person games in DnD or Table Top facebook groups.
I'm currently trying to create my first character but I'm struggling a bit. If anyone has some time to help me it'd be much appreciated
Where in the process are you getting stuck?
rn im stuck with chosing spells
and proficiencies
I dont know which ones would fit my character
Whatever you think is fun and fits the idea of your character best! What class are you?
warlock, djinni
Then thankfully the list is a bit smaller
I'm just a bit confused as to which ones I can even take
are you using D&D beyond to create your character? do you have access to the players guide 2024? or a legacy version of warlock?
yes I wanted to use it but I can t select the right patron on it :/
Unfortunately you'll need to purchase the associated book in order to get the information on DnD Beyond
ah, damn
lezzggeeetttitttttt
or be invited to someone's campaign who is sharing their books that includes that book, if they have master tier
slowmode is on in this room I guess, to prevent spamming
oh no I got timedout because apparently the character creator website I mentioned is using pirated content
This is the official Wizards of the Coast, Dungeons and Dragons discord server, after all.
so is just every other website than dnd beyond blacklisted?
well, this is their server, so wouldn't be surprised
I was not aware :x
Websites with pirated content are blacklisted. There are a few other than DnD Beyond which have officially sanctioned content as well, such as Roll20.
odds are their version of warlock is legacy, which is different than the version in the phb 2024 that just came out. If your DM is cool with it that's on them, but alot of online games would need to approve something legacy (from older edition)
we're playing 5e
All the spells that are in the base Warlock list, and all the 1st and 2nd spells in the Expanded Spell List for Genie Warlocks.
nod... 5e just changed a bit, particularly on character creation, this week.. heh
oki thank youuuuuuuuuuuuu
wasnt sure whether every warlock could learn every base warlock spell or not
all ya really need for warlock is 'eldrich blast' cantrip anyway.. 😉
At third level you'll only know 4 spells total, but you'll have the entire spell list to choose from.
hello every1 :D
greetings and salutations

what are the height ranges for small and medium?
They're not super set in stone, but it's usually assumed to be somewhere around:
3-5ft - small
4-9ft - medium
thanks
Hey! I have 2 questions. Does the DM say what enemies have loot? And also where loot is found? Second question is how does leveling up work? That's the one thing I've never been able to grasp
And do you even have to level up? Or does the dm choose
All of this is handled by the DM. As for you as a player, it's as simple as saying "I search the monster for loot." The DM will tell you if you find anything, or if you need to roll for it, and determines what stuff you find if any.
Hey yall! Never played D&D but lately i been sucked into loads of D&D content, anyone got an idea of good ways to get familiar with the game?
Oh wow I didn't realise it was that easy 🤣 thank you!
I'm new too and what helped me was youtube videos, specifically ones that show people playing it. And also reading the stater set handbook, easy to read and not as long as the dnd handbook
And also, at least for me, the reason I found dnd so complicated and intimidating was the fact that it is really open and free to anything. We are use to alot of rules and stuff in other games but in dnd there's alot of freedom, apart from the established game rules
THAT xD
hi
Im alr a lil overwhelmed w making a character since ive recently discovered subclasses n theres so manyyyyyyyyyyyy
Hiya!
so im new to dnd and know nothing. but are there like many rules?
I just went on dnd beyond 🤣 and boom character sheet ready
The ones I have the hardest tike remembering is about what dice is for what
But the books explain everything well, and you can find spell cards for spells that tell you what dice to use aswell
is there a link to this character sheet? i remember i created an half-elf half-human paladin but that was like ages ago
Beyond? Alr! Ya got anny tips for first time classes n stuff?
Any*
Like I said I'm new to this so if you wanna get more independent advice then you need to ask someone else. butttt from what I know is that the sorcerer/wizard classes are the hardest for new comers and the fighter classes are the easiest
I can make a group to just send it one time
Sure, good to know, thx! Perhaps we can learn together? Maybe even play sumtime if its also an online thingy (im sure thats possibleeeeee)
Sure I'd love to!
I haven't actually done a session yet because no one I know players it 😂
I JUST discoverd my best friend is a DM
I told him I found smth new to "obsess" over n he was like "I mean.... ive actually been making a campaign yk......."

OMGGG
We are cooking something up...
Lucky!
What ability score increases would a nomadic air genasi have?
The Legacy version of air genasi had a +2 to CON, +1 to DEX. The newer version lets you put that +2 and +1 wherever you like.
I just joined this server. I’ve had a bunch of 5e books for about 2 years now but I’ve never gotten around playing it yet

The bots posts above have good info, depending on whether you need to get acquainted with the game or to find a group!
Understood. Thank you! I look forward to getting to know this community better!
Do feel free to ask questions if you have them!
Is there any way to easily find a group to hep inexperienced players?
You can search through #looking-for-players using keywords like beginner or related terms, but it's not especially common for folks to advertise as such. You can (and should, in my opinion) feel empowered to ask, though!
Personally, I would also suggest watching livestreams on YouTube or something. I am one of those people who learn better by watching others do it, so it really helped me out! I would totally suggest you watch IOverse on YouTube
There's also the learn-to-play sessions offered through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab). You can also sometimes find tutorial sessions at libraries and local game stores/hobby shops.
Sounds great, I'll have to look into it for sure!
And I imagine its nest to first play in a party before you dm?
It helps but it's not strictly necessary. Being the DM almost guarantees you a game, and if you have a good group, rotating will be a reasonable ask.
I just gotta say I love how chill this entire server is
My character that I’m making finally is a dragon born
It's a fun hobby, so I think lots of folks want others to feel welcomed.
I really wanna make a swachbuckler kobold
Even though I like elves and tiefling’s
Who’s entire tribe lives on the back of a Dragon Turtle
You can always make multiple characters!
My stable of PCs is almost 30 strong, which is peanuts compared to what some folks have.
True, but I had such a problem, figuring out what character I wanted to make
Art takes time
Just an idea, that's all.
I find if you make characters without putting so much stock in them, they become easier to generate instead of like "This is my one and only."
If I play a warlock do I learn the cantrips and spells from my patron in addition to my regular spell/ cantrips or do they share slots in my spell list?
But you do you!
I'm pretty sure subclass spells get added to the base spells you choose for your class automatically.
Right, in fact, I believe bg3 does this
Wait, how does double classes work? I acc wanna re-use an oc of mime from my rp days, could totally fit into a warlock-fighter class but im far from familiar w all the ins and outs from classes let alome combining them
BG3's design isn't a perfect replica of fifth edition rules so don't take that as gospel.
so I can learn the 2 basic cantrips + any one cantrip my patron gives me?
Swashbuckler is a subclass for the rogue. A kobold is a race of tiny dragon people
I'd recommend #character-discussion for the finer points of a class.
aight thank you
Yea but like I know it exists, but is it a common thing or not?
Yes, multi-classing, as it is called, is a very common thing to do in DND
For my character character concept that is an outcast and people viewing him as a monster, but he is sad and lonely inside because the people hate him and want to kick him out of the village
Sure, he’s chaotic good but he has a good heart
Because I have the basic rules of 2014 and 2024
I was thinking of Dragonborn or even possibly half elf or tiefling maybe just elf
The race/species could be any of the above, though being seen as monstrous probably works a little better with a dragonborn or a tiefling (assuming a generally humanoid population).
Yeah, so that’s why I thought maybe Dragonborn since I have the wings of fire books or even tiefling because I kinda like more of the monstrous
Races
Quick question, do I absolutely need dnd beyond or can I just use physical character sheets for the games?
Up to the table, but lots of folks play without using DDB.
Good to know! Thank you!
Yeah now you mention it. Yeah, that would work. Dragonborn or tiefling
By the way, watch the short if anybody to anybody who likes dragons this video link
was wondering if anybody would be willing to vc with me and help me figure out some of the optimal things i just had a session and i feel like i realy did not do well with my barb caricter i havent played them before
Any idea how to comfortably manage my whole character? Things are overwhelming and I keep missing stuff
@slate yacht I am also struggling with that!!
Any games going on I’m really trying to learn but I think it might help if I was actually learning as I played I asked my friend but he just sent me a giant book on Google
Same
Have either of you tried using dndbeyond?
Hello! Im trying to get into DnD because it seems really cool and ive heard so many interesting stories of campaigns people have had but i cant seem to even get started because the whole shtick of creating a character is already so complicated. Please help D:
I’ll help! You should start by picking your character’s race/species
Ive chosen a Hill Dwarf, because they sound cool
I have a tiny bit of the whole sheet done but it really aint much
I am using dnd beyond
Great! Now, are you planning on using point buy or rolling for stats?
And im kinda stuck on the Class thingy
Not sure how either works
I don’t exactly remember how point but works exactly, but I can teach you how to roll for stats! First, get four six-sided dice and then roll them. Subtract the lowest roll and add up the three you keep
Alright i got 15
Great! That will be your stat for strength! Now do this process five more times for the remaining five stats, which go in this order: dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma
Hello new to the server here
Hello! I just joined today as well!
W
Alright, these are what i got
15 Strength, 14 Dexterity, 7 Constitution, 11 Intelligence, 17 Wisdom, 8 Charisma
I don't like the business Modell. I bought the books and won't buy them again just to use the homepage
Perfect! Now we can pick out your class! Since strength, dexterity and wisdom are your highest scores, I would recommend you pick either barbarian, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, or ranger
Ive picked fighter
The numbers you roll don’t have to be assigned in order — and usually aren’t.
Hallo
You can apply the six numbers in any order you like.
Great! Now all that’s left is your background. Choose any you like
What does that mean excactly
Your background is a part of character creation that gives a little insight into who your character is/was and where they came from. It gives the mechanical benefit of granting you two extra proficiencies, some starting items, and some starting gold
My bad! Thank you for the info! I’ve only ever seen it done in a set order 😅
How do you start (find people to play with) this is my first time
i think mercenary seems like a cool background, ill go with that
I would suggest going to #538461441540489216
Where is that?
Oh js found it ty
Quick question, do you have the rules pulled up, whether from online or from the Player’s Handbook?
I believe the soldier background is closest to what you’re looking for
I got the 2014 free basic ruleset pulled up from the dndbeyond website
Perfect! Look at the backgrounds on there
Also, I forgot to mention, as a Hill Dwarf, you get +2 to constitution and +1 to wisdom
Though if you’re going by the new rules, you can put that +2 and +1 into any stat of your choice
Right, ill pick soldier
Perfect! Welp, other than picking your starting gear from your class, you seem pretty much ready to go! Good luck!
You can manage a few characters for free. Up to you.
actually no, your stats are from your background now
In the new phb, yes. However, the person I was helping was going off of the 2014 rules
ah, ok
you said "the new rules" so i assumed
Do you make characters when your going to start a game or before hand
The newer-but-not-newest rules
Either way
No worries! When I said new rules, I meant newer rules in the sense of later 2014 5e books allowing all species to choose their extra stat point distribution
Ok
I like building characters that easily fit into the theme of the campaign, which is hard to do without knowing what the campaign is. 😅
What I’d generally recommend, though, is to cone up with a few loose ideas for characters you might enjoy.
It would be best to discuss with your DM what they intend to do
Then when you find a campaign, you can work with the DM to find the best fit and add any finishing details.
Havent found one yet was just asking if i do find one
Ah, gotcha! Well, good luck in your search!
@sick pecan this is a good place to start i'd say
and if you have any specific questions, shoot me a dm
No problem dude, you're more than welcome
I tried but doesn't work without buying the books
Do you guys use your real name when using roll20 when signing up or your display name?
does it ask for a display name later or will it use my real name when i join later?
nevermind! figured it out.
Hello, new to dnd, how is everyone?
Good!
good evening all!
so, im a very early dnd bloomer
my friend at school had me go on a mini campaign where i had to fight a bear in the forest and it just...
opened my mind and inspired me to begin learning about dnd
i just don't know where to start
i play some CRPG games like Disco Elysium and Fallout but i wanna learn about dnd and its lore
#dnd-lore Can answer lore questions. Just keep in mind that individual campaigns are likely to have their own unique lore.

Anyone have the starter edition with stormwreck isle campaign?
Should you buy a players guide for in-person games?
Yes, it is very convenient
what level do you have to be to be multiclass again
Anywhere above 1st
As long as you meet the stat requirement for the class you are multiclassing into, you can.
The rules for Multiclassing can be found in the Basic Rules:
thanks
Hiya
So im new to dnd and i need help on what to do, i already have a character, i just need help and advice on what to do at this point
@final tree
I just got that one
@sage dock
I just got that starter set. Can’t wait to play it. Been reading it
There’s no right or wrong answer to that, but here’s a few possibilities:
- Show off your character in #character-discussion or ask for feedback
- Ask in #dnd-rules if you’ve got any rules questions
- Check #find-a-game for info on finding folks to play with
Ok
For character discussion do i have to draw him or do i just have to discribe em
If you wanted to draw him, we’ve got #dnd-arts-and-crafts.
If you want feedback, you’ll probably want to share your actual character sheet.
Nope dont wanna im trash at drawing
I'd fumble
If you just want to discuss the ideas, you can write whatever you like.
what’s political intrigue?
thing is i made it on dnd beyond-
Share the link
K
And if you want to show how your character looks without drawing, Hero Forge and #dnd-heroforge-etc might be of interest.
How do i do that on mobile-
In the app or your browser?
App
I wish the app made that easier. 😅
There’s an option to edit your character in the website.
And from there, you can click your character name and there’ll be a share option.
Ok
Nations vying for power. Backstabbing nobility. Challenges to the throne.
As a few examples
thank you!
They’re usually more socially-focused stories.
Pretty much everything that happens at King’s Landing in Game of Thrones is political intrigue.

Hi
hello, I want to learn!
Hello there! I've been playing DnD for some time now, but I am still new to DMing.
Hello, I am actually very new to DnD and have never played before. I always want to try out DnD but none of my friends play it. So I hope any veterans here could teach me about the game.
Have you looked at the pins in this channel or #learn-to-play
@turbid cove both of yall should check out the #learn-to-play channel. It has many helpful links to help you begin your D&D journey. If you have any questions after exploring those resources, please ask
so i know (most of) how to play dnd, but I've never actually gotten through a full campaign before. I played once, and the dm kinda gave up halfway through the first session. Any ideas where I could find campaigns open to new players? Preferably ones that could help me out with building a character?
#looking-for-dm should help you out, and I can help with character creation if you don't find anyone
Thank you
what would happen if like i was in the middle of a session and I have to leave to something important that suddenly came up
what do i do???????
I'd say tell the DM that you have to leave. It should be fine as long as you don't do it alot since it'd probably ruin the mood in the campaign
righy gotcha gotcha thankssss
Cheers
"hey sorry something important came up i gtg"
just don't make it a habit l
