You can check out #looking-for-players for DMs advertising their games and can make a post for yourself using the commands in #find-a-game. Another option would be to look at larger communities or westmarches servers in #looking-for-community
Okay, thanks. I appreciate it.
you aren't. The commands bring up a template that you fill out and submit. You can type those commands in any channel except the looking-for channels.
Once you submit the form it will appear in the channel with the same name as the command you used so "/looking-for dm" would post to #looking-for-dm
Wondering if there’s someone willing to help me with making my first campaign to DM. So I had did a one shot (where I DMed) from the candle keep series. Wellllllll it being the first time I DMed and my friend was like ya it’s easy jump in and wing it…. I ended it on a weird cliff. It’s been left for me to make a part two and I’m not sure if I’m adding to much and left with weird writers blocks
Could i help me i was gonna dm to ask but i dont see the template? Do i need to be at my computer?
You*
First type /looking-for
Next pick what channel you're trying to post in - e.g dm to post in #looking-for-dm
The bot will then give you a form to fill out.
Once you submit that form, the bot will post your submission to the channel and create a thread.
Use the thread to make any corrections/updates and to chat with interested folks.

so im making a warlock and trying to figure out how the "create pact weapon" would work, i would make a shortsword most of the time but how would i roll for it with my stats? using dnd beyond
Using Pact of the Blade? That ability isn’t tied to any stats. What you would do is add the weapon you wanted to your inventory, then (optionally) mark it as a pact weapon using the item’s note feature
some tables might but i'd probably say that up front, some people might not feel comfortable dming for a minor, and acting as adult supervision if doing in person sessions
Not exactly new to dnd as a whole but I am new to 3.5 and was wondering if anyone could direct me to the right channel
Adding onto Harvest’s comment, a lot of crude and lack for a better term, adult topics, might show up at certain tables and DMs/PCs might not want a younger party member present because of said topics
#dnd-elder-editions is the channel you want for going over any edition before 5e.
@ocean peak I would start off looking for a party in your school or whatever after school programs you partake in, rather it’s a sports team or club or otherwise
Well that sucks
Over the last month I got ghosted by a dm during a private-chat only invitation process. This is weird because I was initially incentivized to ask questions so once I decided to comment on how the campaign was going I was disappointed to realize I wasn't going to be reached back
If there are any groups looking for new members im open 👋
Looking to play in my first game if anyone is looking for a player message me
Can I interrogate a person using Intelligence? I mean like asking a question and instead of waiting for an answer, just deduce it from the body language
Up to the DM to decide if that makes sense and is appropriate in the game context. But yes, it could be possible.
Usually though it would be an insight check
Could it be possible to do it using investigation?
Read what I said: #dnd-newcomers message
Yes it could be possible if the DM decides it makes sense and is appropriate in that game context.
Ty, then I'll talk to my DM
hi
Hello

Welcome! I would check out the Dyno post above to get started, since it has a link to the free basic rules. I wouldn’t worry about memorizing everything, just be familiar with how to do character creation, skill checks, and combat. I also highly recommend making a character as you go along for practice. If you want feedback on any characters you might come up with, check out #character-discussion . After that, feel free to look for a game! Within this server there’s #find-a-game . And of course, feel free to ask any questions you might have here :)

Welcome!
Hi, kinda new to D&D and all that. Just kinda confused on D&D Beyond and the normal D&D. It's pretty much the same but one of them is on a website and the other is IRL, right? No need to pay too, right?
DDB is the same as D&D, it’s just the digital site with some additional functionalities to facilitate the game (i.e. digital books, character sheet hosting, etc)
Ah, kk
In fact, DDB is owned by the owners of D&D
Cool
But yes it is free, at least the basic rules are. You can check them out in the Dyno post above, in this channel’s pins, or in #learn-to-play
Mk, thanks for the info
How to I find a campaign to join in the find-a-game channel?
Follow the instructions
Yeah read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use our LFG channels to find a group/game.
hello, how do i find people to play game with?
Alright
Thank uuuu
Heeeyyy, is the faith and notes optional on the Description part? Not really a big fan of backstories and stuff like that
Faith is optional, less (though not entirely) so if you’re playing a Cleric
What about the notes?
Notes are also optional, but most DMs like at least a little backstory. The desired length is dependent on DM but you can get by with the “3-sentence backstory” which has 3 simple elements:
- Who your character is
- What is their personality like
- Their reason for adventuring
Oooo, that's nice. Thank you once again for the help
Hey I heard about DND but I don't know how to start can someone help me?
Go to find a game and find some people to play with #find-a-game
No I mean I don't know anything about it
Aren't you a DM?
Oh ok
Forgot about that channel
Having a look at the free basic rules tends to be the best place to start (look in the pins)

thing is its a magic weapon, so it should scale off charisma right? i dont want to add it then have crappy stats
nevermind i found it
Magic weapons aren’t inherently tied to charisma unless the item or one of your creatures say so.
Pact of the Blade simply makes you able to summon a magical weapon
button to mark it as a pact weapon when i equipped it
If you chose the Hexblade subclass then your pact weapons are eligible to use charisma instead of str/dex due to its Hex Warrior feature
Has anyone done a themed campaign (like based off of movies, shows, etc) and actually enjoyed it? Ive seen a few on r/lfg and figured they might be easier to ease into the rp of dnd for a first campaign
When taking the hide action, does the Stealth Check need to be higher than the Passive Perception of all enemies or can you be hidden from just some enemies?
I've always run it as higher than Passive Perception, but I'd check with #dnd-rules for certainty.
Hello, I didn't chat here in a long time, couldn't find the time until now, I finally got the time to get into the game for the first time ever since almost everyone I know is playing it and I was wondering if I could find a session
I know its obvious but I'm a complete beginner so bear with me please

Not sure I understand how the Looking For Community thread works, or what a community is?
A community server has many Dungeon Masters and many players and many games. That’s pretty much the general definition of them. You can respond in a LFG posts thread to indicate interest but for many community servers you can click their server link and join their server directly that way.
Hi!
Sup
Just trying to get into the dnd world after playing bg3
my head hurts with all the rules XP
You don't need to learn it all at once! And it's not uncommon to create a cheat sheet for yourself for the first few weeks/months.
Just focus to start on learning where the rules are.
Then you can always just look them up as needed.
Im just reading the AL players guide to create a character
Nice! ICYMI, we do have #adventurers-league if you run into any AL-specific questions.
Thank you! Ill go there then 🙂

Welcome to the server! The resources above should be useful as you get yourself acquainted with the game. If you have questions, do feel free to ask.
So i've been in this server for awhile, and I've occasioanlly glanced at the "Looking for players" tab, but i've never joined a game before. I'm just not quite sure how to actually.. 'begin' a DND game. I've made myself a character sheet before, and i've seen basic beginner tutorials on general information, such as combat and character sheet setups. Mostly just character sheet setups
Do I really just hop into a game from one of the DM's over in #looking-for-players ? one I learn a bit more, of course
Another worry of mine is more of a 'issue on my end' thing. My day to day changes quite often, and I often will end up busy on a day I thought i'd be relaxing. And I think this is whats largely stopping me from actually joining a campaign. Since I don't want to say "oh yeah i'll be able to do a bi-weekley on saturday campaign!" only to say on saturday morning "hey sorry something came up, I can't do today." and then fall behind when they'll be playing without me.
Any advice? What informational videos I should watch to better learn 5e, how to be a good supporting party member (Good rules of roleplay, etc.) and all that jazz.
I've seen some horror stories of the DND table where people just don't know what they're doing, or completely ruin the experience because they're not trying to roleplay with anybody outside of "My character shanks this guy, ruining all story potential because 'my character is suspicious all the time' so its justified"
I would avoid watching videos on how to get 'better' for now. Just read the rules, feel comfortable with them, and play a game. Considering your last paragraph, you seem pretty aware of the social contract in the game, so you are probably doing just fine with that stuff.
Your best bet might be to try to join oneshot games. Those are lower commitment as they are only one session.
In terms of 'beginning' a game, you typically respond to an advertisement that interests you, and hope the DM gets back to you. If they provide information about their game or setting, it's considered good practise to make a character that will fit well into that game. You typically work with the DM to achieve this. Then, after agreeing on a start time, you all just get together for the game.
Right, I made my first character as a sort of test. Never intended to truly play a game with him, which shows on how lacking backstory is since I was mostly focusing on how to allot stat points, skills, and items.
In terms of scheduling for a campaign, you just have to block off time for D&D. You can't really treat it as 'oh, I'll play D&D unless something better comes along.' A lot of the time, you just have to tell people you can't hang out after 6pm on Wednesdays (for example) because you'll be playing D&D.
So, first off, you can join a game as soon as you feel ready. There is no marker to cross of goal you have to reach beforehand. You can just jump into it. Have at least some understanding of the rules will make things run smoother for you, but you don't need to memorize everything. You play D&D just by talking to other people, so there is no platform you have to sign up for or anything like that.
If you're concerned about not doing the right things while playing, just remember that you and your party are meant to work together. A lot of what goes wrong for beginners is when they do things they think "its what my character would do" but they built a character that would be disruptive to the group. D&D is about a group of people that go on an adventure, so make sure your character wants to be in a group, and wants to go on an adventure.
Nice! That's great practise, it should have given you a decent understanding of home some of the rules work, too! THat's a lot more effort than a bunch of my previous players
Playing D&D is a commitment, and if you miss a session, it can be a big inconvenience to everyone else in your group.
I want to have the commitment to a DND campaign and session, but I live in a household currently where that commitment sadly isn't seen by the rest of the members. So I often get dragged around last minute to go help put up a fence for cattle, or go work on a house
Missing a session happens sometimes, of course. But D&D is not quite as casual as playing video games with your friends or something like that
I would say join a table and learn as you play from now on as you have done "the dnd homework".
Playing in a disaster campaign is not the end of the world but can be frustrating. The dnd horror stories might not even apply to your game but if you see the signs of one then there is no ill in leaving.
That just sounds like unfortunate timing. I guess that the only recourse there is to tell your family that you really want to play the game, are willing to help with work during the day, but absolutely CANNOT step out during that given timeframe.
There are some alternatives for you if regularly scheduled sessions don't work
I've seen so many people having these great stories and adventures in DND, so i've always been interested in having one of my own; so being in a DND session WILL be a comitment to me. Its why scheduling is my main concern before beginning. I refuse to be the guy who cancels last minute because of something
Communication is key due to your situation. Maybe you could ask for shorter but more sessions through out a week so you don't have to commit a whole block of time in one go.
That's a great idea. I personally dislike long games, and am looking to run short (2 hour) sessions.
firstly, there is "play by post" or other forms of asynchronous play. This is where you play via text messages in a discord, rather than doing a voice call at a specific time. When playing this way, the game is usually played "24/7" and people just type a chat message whenever they are available to do so.
Second, there are One-Shots. A One-Shot is when you play a full adventure in a single session, rather than over the course of several. Its a one-and-done experience, and can often be played with a completely different group of people each time, which means you don't have to block off a specific period of time on a regular schedule
A member of family has spoken, and should I find a campaign, they will be understanding when I need to block of time frames from them to play.
Truly, a moment worth cheering for.
I usually run my online sessions for like 2-3 hours while my face to face session are longer due to us hanging out + eating food so they get to be around 4-8 hours sometimes.
Better get gaming
Sounds great!
How do one-shots work really? Is leveling and that stuff faster to complement the one session? Or do you start out as a higher level?
You typically do not level up during a one shot. The DM running it will tell you what level it starts at, and it will almost always finish at that level as well
I see
You usually start at a higher level yes. I usually run oneshots between 7th to 12th level which is pretty standard tho higher level oneshots are common as well.
A one shot could be at any level. I've played in ones at level 1, and at level 20, and anything in between
Since you are new to D&D, I would highly recommend you try to find something as low level as possible. You might get overwhelmed by information if you join a high level one shot or campaign and have to learn every feature your character has all at once
I think theres a bit more research to be done before I begin. I've largely forgotten most of the information I actually learned whilst getting truly into the idea of PLAYING the game.
So i'll need to relearn character sheets at the bare minimum.. I think I remember general combat rules.
I want to be at least be a bit more prepared before I step into a session, so what videos should I watch for combat and character sheets? Some other stuff outside of that as well
Or like, a channel that does good at explaining this information if you know of it
I can send some links in dms if you wish?
The Handbooker Helper series by the cast of Critical Role are some of the best new player guides I've seen
Yes please, I have to go actually so drop them off and i'll respond when I can :)

@oblique willow One shot questers have made a good rp guide and etiquette
Is there an easy way to keep track of player resources like GP, SP, or other things like items you pick up? Also, if I want to make a new character sheet for my campaign but I want to type in my information, what are the best options?
Hi!
Are you asking as a DM or as a player? Is the character sheet not sufficient?
As a player my apologies
I can hopefully DM myself after I have a few campaigns under my belt.👍🏻
Is the character sheet not enough to track resources?
I mean I think it’s good enough so I just have to remember to write things down when I get new items/resources
But what about the digital character sheet typing thing? Dnd beyond would be good but I didn’t buy any of the big expansion books on the website/app.
You would have access to the Basic Rules content in D&D Beyond if you didn't buy any content or anyone is using content sharing. Otherwise, you can just use the PDF sheet available here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets
I can type in that sheet? On my computer I mean?
Yep.
Oh ok thank you I appreciate it

👋
hello does anyone know how to find out your perception checks?
What do you mean exactly?
A perception check is a wisdom based skill check, so your bonus to it would be equal to your wisdom modifier plus your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in that skill. So when you perform a perception check, you roll a d20 and add your wisdom modifier and your proficiency bonus if your are proficient in it, or roll a d20 and add just your wisdom modifier if you are not
So the rogue has a bonus action that lets them hide, how does this work out mid combat? Slightly confused how it would work out
You'd need to find somewhere to hide, to start.
Then you make a Stealth check to hide.
And the result of that check is contested against anyone who tries to find you, whether that's through an active Perception check or through their Passive Perception.
hey so i have a question, i'm still new to dnd but trying to understand as much as i can, i think i'm almost figuring out and close to making a character sheet.
so i saw that if you want to play ad a custom (?) race it's called dnd homebrew? Is it allowed to play a custom or made up race, or an existing race from like a video game or tv series?
That's up to the DM at the table.
It's up to your dm. There's Custom Lineage but that's not the same as homebrewing your own race
One thing you might consider is if an existing race give you the abilities you want. If so, choose that and just describe it so that it fits with your mental image.
It's usually recommended to stick to the official races, especially as a newcomer. It'll also greatly increase your chances of finding a game if you do.
ok, so i have to ask the dm if its possible to play a custom race? also os there anywhere i can learn more about homebrew dnd?
Learn the game before you go messing with homebrew. There's a lot out there, and it's not all good.
And yep, it's the DM's call whether homebrew is allowed or not.
This Video by Zee Bashew shows how stealth works in D&D 5e: https://youtu.be/XgUEm6_yXCs
It provides a great visual to show how those mechanics work.
alright thanks
To build on this, homebrew is like building a custom feature for a game engine.
In order to do so, you need to understand how the engine itself works.
Otherwise you won't know if what you built works as intended or if it will break something else down the line.
How do I play dnd online
?tag new online
In simple words hombrew is like adding a mod to the game.
A lot of people do
And am kinda broke right now
The linked article has the basic overview. You don't need to spend any money to play online.
There are many free 3rd party virtual tables
Ty
Usually the dm will share their stuff with you
ok another question, voice chat isn't required to play dnd right?
Not required. It's common but not the only method. Play-by-post (PBP) is text-based play.
This article gives a good rundown of the basics: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp
It depends on the group. There are lots of different styles of play, and not all of them use voice chat. But you shouldn't join a group that does use voice chat if you don't intend to do so with them
👍
@restive knoll
does magic missile always impact? bc it doesnt have attack roll nor saving throw
Yep!
Yes it always hits

ok so i'm making a character w the character builder on dndbeyond and i'm kind of stuck on Faith, is it something required?
Nope, especially not before you've joined a game.
It's tough to pick a god/religion before you know the setting!
No, only paladins and cleric characters care somewhat for that
No character needs a religion per the rules. Whether a table believes otherwise is a different story.
thanks, as for notes part i can customize/make up my char's backstory? i'm guessing i have to also check the wiki for my char's weoght and age and stuff?
You can, but I recommend keeping it loose/flexible so it can be tweaked to fit the game you join. And make it appropriate for your level. A level 1 adventurer hasn't done much in the way of heroic deeds. A lot of new players make this long, detailed list of accomplishments, which takes away from the story of growing during the adventure.
hello there, I'm also making my first char ever 😄 I want to make it focused on lightning damage/lightning spells and such. are there limitations, or like "bad combos" regarding spells, items, casts? so would a sorcerer with lightning spells and 2 daggers be any useful/playable/livable? or am I just living in a dream world? 😄
#character-discussion is the better place!
Variety is useful but not strictly necessary! In my experience it’s very hard to make a truly “bad combo”
oh true
One thing you can do for more spell variety is what’s called “reflavoring.” Basically it’s changing the narrative descriptions of abilities without changing the mechanics. For example, you could reflavor the Burning Hands spell (fire damage) as you burning your enemy with electrical energy
okay that sounds good actually
Idk if I'm asking this in the right place (I'm new to dnd and was tasked with being dm) what do dnd servers look like? Like what template do you guys use?? Do I not use a server and just make a gc?? Or
Or a chicken
You can change any spell to chickens
as a noob, I have an idea to make a spell that scales the more you use it again every round 😄 idk if it counts as broken or if I can do that at all, wanna know what you guys think. basically 2+1d6 dmg, and every round you continue to re-cast it without "not" casting it, u also add n*d4 dmg (where n <=3, so the minimum u do is 2+1d6, and the maximum is 2+1d6+3d4. if you don't cast it once, then the d4s reset, and so on)
just experimenting 😄
this discord really has a chatroom for everything lol, thank you 😄
Yes
Don’t homebrew until you learn the basics
funnily enough, I didn't see the #homebrew until you tagged it, now it shows up as "suggested". it's like hidden or something
okay
Hello 8m new and I'm looking for a dnd campaign to play
elloo
i'm finally done making my character sheet- so uhh does this mean i can start looking? also its on dnd beyond so sharing the link should make the sheet visible to others right?
Generally it's good to make a character at the beginning to learn the basics but you can look for games at any time. A DM may not approve the character you've made though so just in case, be prepared to change it.
Hi new to dnd. I'm dad
Lol
hehe :D
Character sheets are only visible to others when they are set to public.

it says come here if I need help making a character
how crazy can ur character get
You can get premade character sheets here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
You can ask basic dnd questions here in #dnd-newcomers
- For help building a character, visit #character-discussion or #optimization , depending on what you need help with.
- For help learning to DM, check out #dm-discussion
- For more complex rules questions, ask in #dnd-rules
It depends on how well you understand the rules and mechanics of D&D.
A common pitfall that newcomers fall into is building a character concept first, then trying to force that concept to fit into D&D's rules and mechanics.
The better approach is to understand how D&D's character builder works, the campaign you'll be playing, and what books you can use as the basis for building a cool and interesting character.
so it really just depends on the campaign limits
And how well you understand the rules and mechanics.
I'm kinda experienced but I'm fairly new when it comes to actual dnd cuz I played and watched similar games before so I know how rolling works, how damage works, exploration and stuff, etc
which channel would be best to ask for advice on a main storyline plot for a homebrew campaign (i.e. not book campaign)?
define crazy
For example, in the game there is a spell called healing word and I know that a certain wizard ability that you can pick up can allow you to move people that target with a spell. So I know I can build a character that can heal and move allies in a single move. Thus giving them the option to get back into the fight or get to a safe distance without triggering an attack of opportunity.
goofy ahh kinda crazy
there's some very exotic races out there and the sky's the limit when writing your character and their backstory
multiclassing can allow for some really cool unorthodox builds and stuff
however, you have to make sure that your character concept respects both the DM's campaign and your party members
additionally, multiclassed characters can often be ineffective if not done well
alr alr
So again, it depends.
yep yep
multiclassing is also the path to creating very powerful characters (combining mechanics)
the example Zero gave is great and there are many other interactions like it
so, what if you have a character that's outside of the DM's realm? like.. if the setting is in an apocalyptic world, but your character doesn't exactly fit into it?
you don't use that character, or change it to fit their world
Let's hold off on multi-classing as that's not recommended for newcomers.
true
it's recommended (especially when new) to create a character after you're in a campaign and the DM gives you all the details and expectations in session zero
if your pre-written character fits, then that's great, but it won't always be the case
haiaii I need help making a dnd character ;-; or designing one for me and my friends as a complete newcomer..
have you read the basic rules?
check em out here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
No hahaha we don’t have a book or something so I don’t know where to start
For character building there are generally 3 criteria to consider.
- The character should fun for you to play
- Your group should enjoy playing with the character
- Your Dungeon Master should enjoy running a game with that character
is there any games playing now, or coming up soon? im not too sure how to check for that
what are the different throws and how do they help me
like saving throws and the like
saving throws are typically your character trying to resist some sort of unwanted effect
ability checks are your character consciously trying to do something
ooo that’s a good idea I wanna watch some people play to get an idea of it ;-;
If you need to make a handful of characters, your best best is to have your groups select pre-built level 1 characters, so you can jump in and play: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
If you'd prefer to build all the characters from the group up, you can read the process in the free basic rules or use dnd beyond's character builder

My post here goes over a few options: #dnd-newcomers message
deciding to jump over a large gap might be a dexterity(acrobatics) check
but diving out of the way of a Fireball spell's blast is a dexterity saving throw
yep
woah.. how long did it take you guys to build and make ur own character this is like still super overwhelming for me😭😭 so many choices
related to my... what stat?
In both instances, the DM tells when and what to roll.
the investigation skill's modifier, which is your wisdom intelligence modifier, plus your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in the skill
ohh okok
When it's your first time it can take you a while, really depends on the individual.
Once you get the hang of it, you can pull it off in under a minute.
Like any other skill, it takes time and practice to get really good at it.
I forgot investigation was intelligence instead of wisdom oops
I was wondering what the difference between the two is
so intelligence is for investigation related things and wisdom is for like dialogue and convincing or smthn?
intelligence is a stat that generally measures smartness, knowledge, and such
you would use it for a history check pulling up something from a book you've read long ago, for example (as well as other skills)
ohh
it took my first character like 6 hours because I wanted to look at all my spell options and stuff
I'd recommend playing a martial or half caster for your 1st char if you want something simple, spellcasters are typically more complex
but if you take the time to learn what the spells do I'd absolutely say go for it
My recommendation, start with a pre-build.
It's better to start with something that you know works.
Then taking your time understand how that particular character sheet was built.
If anything pick a pre-build and try to build it yourself. That way you can compare it what you made to see if you missed anything.
I personally recommend building a generic character for practice
not something you'd play
but something you do to understand the rules and how to build a character
john doe the elf fighter (never will be touched again), but the process of building him is still good
If you're working with just the free basic rules, you'll have a handful of choices so you can avoid getting overwhelmed.
u see I want to play so badly but I don’t have someone to play with or someone to work with so it’s gonna be boring being both the dm and idk what u call the players at the same time 😭
first learn the rules, get a bit more familiar with them
after you can try to find a game
dnd online is good for practice right

Adventurers League.
- You can learn all about it here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- It provides a low barrier for entry. Players just commit to a single session at a time. Usually 2-4 hours.
- The adventures for level 1 characters are often designed to teach you basics.
- As you play, you'll discover what types of players and dungeon master you gravitate towards.
- You'll have a higher chance of forming a long lasting group by reaching out to people you have establish history with through these independent play sessions.
same here tbh. I'll play with anyone who could teach me the tutorial lol
thanks
RIGHT like a Personal Tutor 😭😭
true
There is a dnd tutorial.
yep
actually I did read the tutorials but I find that actually playing or watching someone play and learning along the way seems more effective
The D&D tutorial game: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
also true but I prefer doing both for more help
ho, they had something like this?
rare dndbeyond W
sheesh dndbeyond
It's been available for a while.
I don't know how long though.
@potent tinsel u wanna vc? Kinda bored and I wanna learn with someone. It's boring if ur alone

in the meantime, I'll go to char discussions for more help on my character
Just keep in mind that soliciting/advertising games outside the LFG channels is not permitted by the Moderators.
So you'll want to either switch to direct messages or make a Looking For Game thread by reading the instructions in #find-a-game
alr mb mb
can i also be friends with you guys?
website
I'm only familiar with dndonline
Ah icic. So is dndonline not related to wotc? Or is dndonline also part of the dnd projects from wotc?
dndbeyond is this character builder where you can just select options as you please, owned and endorsed by wotc yes
you need to own separate dndbeyond copies of sourcebooks to unlock their contents to use in the character maker, but there's no denying it's easy to use
Oh I see
Lmao
Is the app free?
Yes
oh yeah
ya, but the sourcebooks have to be owned by your account in order to use their contents
dnd online is the video game if I remember correctly.
unless ya know a DM that can share their dndbeyond products with you if their account owns them
yep
oh so I gotta buy them too
You can.
Though stick with the free basic rules first to see if this hobby is something you want to invest time and money into.
oh it's a mobile app
alright
I sent you a DM which might help with creating a character
how nice of you to send a dungeon master ☺️
I sent a small gnome named Gerald to his address
they open the door and this 3 foot tall guy holding a DM screen, a notebook, and some dice barge into the house and go to the table
hello, I want to get started on playing dnd
Hello, I wanna start playing dnd always been interested 🙏🏽
You can start by reading the free basic rules to get yourself familiar with the system!
Cleric is a really good entry class but don't let anyone pigeonhole you into being a healer! I've always had a lot of fun with tempest domain
Any classes with gauntlet/fist weapons
Armorer artificer, but theres a term frequently used which is "flavor is free" so when picking a class i'd look for the mechanics you want first and then work to reflavor it to what you want
Every game I play my character are punchers 💪
Would recommend monk then
Armorer artificer gets a mech suit that punches stuff with lightning
This sounds sick
WHAT?
I've heard about gauntlets but never a mech suit
not a full mech but like an iron man suit
That still sound dope i just finished watching marvel in timeline order 😭
Dang
newcomer here, where do i go to learn to play or find a game
I 2nd this
But I"m new to Dnd period. I played one game in college and quit early because of reasons.
I'm feeling like I would like being a DM at some point.
I'd start with going over the basic rules on dndbeyond and while you do that think of some character concepts

i feel like my dude would start with more coinage than that, had wealthy family
THat is a lot to read...
You can start with the basic rule book.
Will do! But I probably would learn faster just by playing.
after i read this stuff where can i find a game for free
While there are some places and people that host games specifically to teach people how to play the game.
It is important to note that D&D is a social game that takes time and effort to coordinate.
So anything you can do to learn beforehand goes a long way to having a smoother and more fun experience.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Show that you took the time to read the posting by mentioning aspects of the campaign you find interesting.
- Tip: Show that DM fun isn't an afterthought by asking what makes the game fun for them.
- Check out #looking-for-community to find community-style games like West Marches, one-shots, and more
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.

perfect
Cool beans. I definitely will do my part
if you want a quick rundown of the rules chap gpt is pretty solid. they even helped me build my first guy
I would not recommend that. It can sometimes just be wrong about certain things.
For quick references, here is the official reference guide: https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/dnd_turn_ref_2022.pdf
You can also get free pre-built character sheets here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
on your quick reference guide it says helping and hiding do the same thing?
Huh, that is a editing mistake that I never noticed before.
The definition for the Hide actions was incorrectly placed twice.
Here is the correct information regarding the Help Action.
Help
You can lend your aid to another creature in the completion of a task. When you take the Help action, the creature you aid gains advantage on the next ability check it makes to perform the task you are helping with, provided that it makes the check before the start of your next turn.Alternatively, you can aid a friendly creature in attacking a creature within 5 feet of you. You feint, distract the target, or in some other way team up to make your ally's attack more effective. If your ally attacks the target before your next turn, the first attack roll is made with advantage.
I have no idea how to approach finding a game even after reading the find-a-game and looking-for-dm channel, since I'm unsure if I need to have a character before submitting, unsure how to make a character, unsure how to add information like others do when trying to post in looking-for-dm, and similarily am unsure on what I would put down for Game Style since I haven't experienced playing yet and wouldn't know; although roleplaying would be sorta interesting if not uncomfortable starting out.
Hello guys
So I just heard about dnd
And I would like to get the jist of it
Does any one know where I could play a game of dnd
Nobody's here right now, when someone with more information comes around they'll probably help us.
Oh ok
#looking-for-players join a game here and talk to the dms
I didn't notice that channel.
Well I looked in that channel and everything is around 8 PM, and that is not a good time for me so I dunno what to do.
Also I feel like I'd be bothering people whose intent isn't to teach a new player from the ground up.
Well there are lfg servers on discord but that channel updates a lot with new games which fill up quickly
I don't know what LFG is.
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

LFG means Looking For Game. It's a shorthand term for channels, or for if someone is LFG.
In short, it means there's a bunch of other discord servers one could join, which are big hubs of lots of other people actively looking for games throughout it. In this server though, it's mostly just general discussions.
I'll mention this question in passing but don't feel required to delete your message and reply to it but are there any servers catoring to new players?
im pretty new to dnd and i was just wondering how long on average it would take for someone to make a pretty lore heavy game. my friend got into dming, and assembled some of our other friends as players, but none of us have played. he's had multiple concepts over ~9 months and scrapped most of them, he's been working on the current on the current one for abt 3 months. my main question is if it typically takes this super long to make something like this
(i'll note that he's said it has a lot of homebrew stuff, but hasnt provided many details on its depth)
If he is intent on making a deeply planned world full of lore, then 3 months isn’t surprising. However it shouldn’t stop your party from starting their story. The art of DMing is also about being able to improvise. They won’t be able to prep for every possible thing 3-5 different people could spontaneously do
I’m unsure if I need to have a character before submitting
You don’t need to have a character nor character sheet ready to make a post in any #looking-for channel. If you mean having one ready in order to join a game, that will be DM dependent and a great question to ask them in their post. Some like to have you bring in a character, others like to have players create them after joining the game.
Unsure how to make a character
Check #learn-to-play as well as the pinned posts for a link to the free basic rules, which contain the rules for character creation. Don’t worry about memorizing everything, just be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. As for putting everything on a sheet there’s online sheet hosters such as D&DBeyond or roll20. There’s also pdfs you can download, although you’ll have to manually enter in information. I recommend making a character as you read through the rules for practice.
Unsure how to add information like others do
As the instructions in #find-a-game say, you use the appropriate command for the channel you want to post in, then you’ll be messaged a form where you can add in all the relevant information. You can also reply to others’ post in #looking-for-players .
Unsure on what I would put down for Game Style
“I don’t know, it’s my first time playing” is a perfectly valid answer to put!
Also I feel like I’d be bothering people whose intent isn’t to teach
In my experience many games are beginner friendly even if not explicitly advertised as such. It’s always good to ask just in case!
Are there any servers catoring to new players?
There most likely are! You can check #looking-for-community within this server.
gotcha, thank you! i'll try and convince him to let us try a premade game out lol
It can certainly take a while! It seems your friend fell into a fairly common “worldbuilding trap.” You can remind your friend that the entire world doesn’t need to be fleshed out before the game starts. It’s actually most efficient to hone in on the local area the players are in, and save the creative process for further off areas only if/when the players are actually going to go there
hi!!
i'm pretty new to DnD and want to create a character and don't know how
can anyone help me??
Welcome have you had a look at the basic rules?
like
server rules or game rules?
server or in-game?
Game rules, they can be found in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
Hello all just joined and just downloaded the D&D beyond app and created 2 characters 1 was a quick one with presets and a fuel in-depth one I’m not fully finished with any tips would be helpful or just a look over to make sure nothing is weird about my characters. Haven’t even played a single game yet just been itching to play something new
Thank you sorry
No problem
Hey so uh I'd like to start playing but I don't have a character, any help would be appreciated
You don't need a character to start playing
You usually join a campaign first and then make your character with the help of your DM
The Basic Rules have all you need to get started (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014).
Take a look at the sections on ability scores, loop back to races and classes, see what kind of thing appeals to you. You can try putting a character together for practice and get feedback in #character-discussion .
I just joined the DnD discord and wanted to say hi! I’m a newcomer to this and wanted to ask if you guys also play online using discord ?
Many do! Voice chat is the most popular, though many games are run by text with various tools to help do the rolling of dice and suchlike.
Thanks!
I got the beyond app thingie can I make a character through that?
You can indeed. It has options to help guide you through the process.
Ah that’s awesome !
My only experience with D&D so far has been D20 (I'm sorry if that's an annoying thing to say)
Is there a group I can join to learn ?
The #find-a-game section and #looking-for-players channel are where you can find groups getting organised for play. Many are beginner-friendly, but do read the posts for more details.
Copy that, thank you @wild onyx !
I just experienced insane whiplash. Turns out, I already made a character like three years ago
Huh
Turns out I forgot lmao

Hello everyone 🙂 is there a place I can post my intro idea for a campaign (first time dm-ing) to get some feedback? Any help appreciated 💜
Thanks!
First time playing last night. Had great fun. Definitely need to throw myself more into the ‘role play’ element of it all though.
That usually comes with time and comfort. It can be really awkward at first settling in to playing make-believe, especially with strangers.
yeah it usually takes me a few sessions before I get comfortable with a group to start doing accents and such lol
what book do i have to get to get path of the giant in dnd beyond?
Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants
thought so just wanted to make sure
Brand freaking new to the server and DnD, just saying hello!
Welcome! The pinned messages in this channel have some resources you might find useful as you poke around.
hey it's me again, i would like to look or join a oneshot or something like that now that i've made a character. I seriously have no idea how to start- I saw that you can also play dnd on forums n stuff?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
We have channels for connecting with others. If you'd like to post your own ad in #looking-for-dm, you'd read through #find-a-game and follow the instructions. Otherwise, you can peruse #looking-for-players and contact anyone whose posted ad looks interesting to you, either by sending a message in the ad's attached thread or sending the poster a private message.
is there a command to write an ad?
Yes. All the info is in #find-a-game.
thanks
So i'm currently in the process of creating a character; but im a bit puzzeled on one section.
Racial Traits/Skills. Im creating a Half Orc Barbarian, and i've been told differently by friends on how to select my Racial Traits. Do I select 2-3? Or am I given access to all of them from the Half Orc Race? As well as Barbarian class features.
Unsure if this is the channel for this, so i'll also drop this message into #character-discussion
So, if you're looking at the Half-Orc race in your book or whatever source you are using, everything listed under "half-orc traits" are the benefits you get for playing that race. You get all of them
Sweet, thank you!
Hi! I'm new to DnD, have been reading and watching a lot of info about the game so I can be ready to join a campaign. I'm ready to make my character and wondering what would be the best place/way to make it? Roll20, BeyondDnd? Where would you guys suggest I make my character sheet? Also, how do I then use it in-game? Do I need to print it out and have it at hand?
Hey and welcome!
I personally like D&D Beyond. That said, unless you've paid for additional content or have it shared via another user, you'll just have the "Basic Rules" available (which honestly is still a lot).
Roll20 is good to use if you know your group is expecting to use Roll20. But you can't "import" your Roll20 character to other campaigns unless you're a higher tier subscriber.
Another great option is to do it all manually in a PDF or even just on paper. You have to do all the "work" but sometimes it's nice to check to make sure you understand what the rules are trying to tell you!
Lastly, (phew) you use your sheet in-game depending on the grou's expectations. Some groups, in person, want everyone with a physical sheet. But many others are chill with you seeing your sheet on your phone (e.g. on D&D Beyond). In an online game, you might be asked specifically to have your online character sheet in D&D Beyond or Roll20. Again, depends a bit - but you only have to worry about this after you find your group!
Hope that helps!
Thank you!
Very much depends on the class or build
For the most part, once someone is actively attacking you, there's only a few things that can effect that
If you're a Wizard and you have shield, you can use it as a reaction to make the enemy roll with disadvantage (i believe.) If you have Portent Dice, you can transfer one of the die onto an attack roll to make them miss
If you have lucky, you can make the enemy reroll iirc
It all depends on your resources
Shield adds to your AC
Shield adds +5 to their ac
Ok so
According to this chart on dndbeyond.com
Each class has different saving throw proficiencies
That is true.
Warlocks can impose disadvantage
Sometimes
So I assume that means for different types of damage, their saving throws are tied to different stats
And (looks at chart)
Some spells or effects will ask you to make a saving throw of a certain type
Like fireball requires a dexterity saving throw
Not really different types of damage, but different mechanics of spells. Like, fireball is a dex saving throw because you're diving out of the way. But toll the dead is wisdom because you're hearing these loud bells in your head
It's somewhat related to the effect but it's not exact 1-1 match
What types of mechanics would force players to use charisma
Saving throws are for different scenarios not damage.
Damage you can gain resistances and immunities too.
Good to know
Social encounters or charms/spells
For spells, banishment is the big one, but intimidation and persuasion are also very common
Typically possession or banishment
Saving throws are different than skill checks
Charisma is one of the fuzzier ones, but in general stuff related to force of will
Hey I'm new here
Hey. Also new here
Welcome
Hi
So im fairly new to D&D, done no more than reading PHB for 5E and making some characters that have never seen use. Want to try and start playing and dont really know where to start. Any direction i could be given for where to go to try and find like oneshots and also advice to learn more about how to play and get fun ideas?
There's the free basic rules
thanks, ill go read the learn to play section now.
hello
So, my character is complete. I'm holding off on backstory for now so I can better wind it into the DM's created story. Im finally ready to hop into a campaign! Already sent in a request for a campaign i'm interested in, so i'll hopefully hear back from them with the good news!
Oh my god I forgot spells
..What spells can barbarians use even, if any?
None. Easy
You might get a couple from your subclass or your race, but they're not a casting class in general
There's a barbarian subclass that can cast spells, but typically you just don't even have to worry about spells at all
I figured, when I gave it a tad bit more thought
Good luck with the campaign! Don't feel disheartened if you don't hear back. There are a LOT of people looking for games, you just have to keep trying!
I think the main issue finding one is majority require 18+ and I fall a single year under that

Yeah, that seems like it would be rough. I've seen a few advertised that were made by teenagers, so hopefully more of those will come along soon.
If it's a big struggle, you could also try running your own games for a bit. Will definitely increase the rate at which you understand the game!
How much damage can a mid-late level Barbarian do? Should it change much or it’s good now?
The hightened responsibility is terrifying, but that might honestly work. I've come up with a few campaign ideas over the years that i'd love to see be used.
The responsibility is not as big as people on the internet make it out to be. If you cultivate players who share the responsibility with you, then it's not much more work than being a player. For example, I tell my players that they are responsible for describing their own character's actions in combat, that's one less thing for me to have to do. One of my players is in charge of scheduling. Stuff like that.
I'm pretty sure it's decent damage, and I know that they can take a LOT of damage
Ah ok. Can they take damage from spells effectively too? Like say at level 10 or so?
I’m sure there are some armor or legendary things that can give them resistances too but
Yes. Absolutely. Barbarians are the tankiest class in the game, you do not need to worry about their survivability
Check out the Bear Totem Warrior subclass if you're worried about damage. When you rage, you have resistance to all damage except for psychic
What about debuffs like frightened or poisoned? I really want a tanky side character who is on the front lines. If debuffs can screw them up it’s not good
Paralyzed is what I’m really worried about because someone told me that it is one of the worst things to happen to a player
hi there everyone hope i can learn and enjoy dnd with everyone :)
If you want a tanky character, the defaults are typically Barbarian, Fighter and Paladin. The last two with heavy armour and shields.
There isn't a class that specialises against this type of stuff afaik, you just gotta roll with it
Oh ok so it’s a toss up basically
Paladins add to their own saves, which helps with a lot of that
don't worry about your resistances and stuff. pick one of those tanky classes that stands out to you, make sure you aren't being silly in combat, and let the dice do what they do
I can live with that
For Fighters and Barbarians, resilient wisdom isn't a bad feat if you can get it
Hello, welcome. Check out the free basic rules online to get started 🙂
Hello! Nice to meet everyone! 🙂
Hello!
What’s some of your favorite creature to encounter in the game? Either as a friendly creature or as an enemy?
hi
Hello! Welcome
Haven't gotten to properly play as a player, but I'm a fan of running hags as a DM
New-ish to the game, I have made and played a few classes.
Oh wow you started as a DM?
What's running a hag?
I thought DM ing for the first time was difficult
It can be a bit harder to start as a DM, but it's definitely possible
Or is difficult in general
Oh ok that’s insightful
It seems so intimidating
I don't think it's as hard as people think. And if more folks gave it a shot, there wouldn't be such a discrepancy between the number of players and DMs
There’s a discrepancy?
How big?
Yep. Nobody I knew was willing to DM, so after a year of wanting to play the game, I started running my own.
I know it's hard to find a steady DM where I'm at
Oh ok I’ve been playing for a few months now
DMing is genuinely not that bad at all. The Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter adventure is what I began with, and I really recommend it. It's laid out very well and easy to learn to DM with.
Running a game with a hag monster
Should I try to be a DM sooner? I really want to DM my own campaigns at some point. What’s a good resource to learn how to DM?
oohhh
Well, consider that if there were enough DMs for each table, there would still be 4-6 times as many players as DMs. But the discrepancy is even more massive than that, hence why it's so difficult to find a game as a player
Oh my goodness! That’s so wild
Honestly just picking up a starter set! Many recommend The Lost Mine of Phandelver or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
I'd recommend picking up the adventure, reading through it, and playing the game! Don't get caught up with looking up too much advice online. It is VERY overwhelming, can be contradictory, and just not necessary for a new DM!
So you started off as a DM? I think that's the right term
Yep!
Oh ok thank you! I will keep that in mind
I honestly want to do that as well. I've played one game irl and enjoyed it but I dropped out of the campaign early. Due to reasons
I started DMing maybe 6 months or so after I first played. Just grabbed a one-shot adventure and ran it
Everyone will have a different style that works best for them, but I'm definitely a winging it kind of DM 😁
I really recommend it! Lets you get more immersed in the hobby imo, and also helps you build valuable skils as a player.
Hallo, I'm completely new to D&D and I wanna learn how to play. It'd be nice if someone could teach me 🙂
I watched a bunch of YouTube videos to learn stuff
I'm new too. Maybe we can start a group of new players. If we mess up we wing it
That sounds nice, I'm down
Quick question why do you want someone to kill you like the animal you are? Lol
Oh, uhh, that was a while back and I wasn't in the best state. I had some bad stuff going on
Frorgor to change it, oopsie daisy
oh, also I thought it was funny in a kinda morbid way cuz I was bullied about the furry thing
but that's not really the topic
My b didn't mean to get personal thought it was just a funny backstory thing for your pfp
yeah, sorry 😅
Hello. I am hoping to know this game & how it works. I was Listening to a D&D podcast and became interested. I hope to be part of a D&D campain soon. I just need to make a character first.

I'm new to dnd too. Only played once years ago. Want to group and play? We'll just figure stuff out as we go.
Sure, On a friday. I have work tomorrow.
You homebrew anything? I'm getting used to the terminology lol
I'm like...VERY new to this.
I am as well. I remember a few things...such as rolling the dice lol. But what dice at what time idk. Also I know nothing about classes and dnd lore. My last character I played a doppler that could speak to animals
I might need to look at the characters again. Cause, I do have an Idea of a Double Ganger with multi personality disorder
I also hope my new antenna would make sure I don't have any lag spikes.
Lag does not really matter in dnd unless the voice call stops working
Hello 😄 So, I am not a newbie persay. But I have never played a lvl 20. I would love some help building a lvl 20 melee dps character. Anyone want to help me?
Bunch of newbies in here but we can try
Lol, that's true haha. I didn't really think about it that way.
#character-discussion or #optimization might be a better option for specific advice
This channel tends to be more at the 'what are ability scores' level
Oh yeah huh, let me try there.
Friday might be good for me too. @burnt saddle you want to group up too?
Please take this to direct messages - we ask that users not use channels other than the Looking-for sections to look for/set up groups. thank you and I hope the table is fun!
yes please
I'm sorry about that. Didn't mean to break rules.
Was just trying to find other newbies like me. Will use. The correct channels from here on
In combat you have 4 actions right? Action, Bonus action, Move and free action?
How do you guys remember all these rules? I need like some flash cards
you pick them up over time.. the repetition. There are still things I have to look up just because they don't come up a lot. No one really excpects folks to know everything 🙂
Waiting for #looking-for-players to update with something is a painstaking process, are there other servers I can join that have DND sessions in them? If thats even sharable information i'm unsure
Other options
connective memorization via repetition. You'll naturally begin going "Oh I know this off the top of my head! It's X Y Z!" with more and more things the more you play and read. That said, flash cards, rule reminder sheets, and so on, are useful tools. Especially for the more esoteric rules, the uncommon ones.
When it says just type the message to recieve a form in #find-a-game, I'm unsure of what that means..
Oh. nevermind i'm a goober

Welcome! The bot post above has some helpful links to get you started
Read over this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and browse the videos of Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). His thesis is that running the game is easy (or at least easier than it's often made out to be) and fun, and his videos help folks see that for themselves.
If I wanted to play DND Digitally or online , where would I go?
finding a game you can go to the #looking-for-players channel, or the #looking-for-community channel for servers that also have "LFG" channels
awesome
hello noob to discord. Love D&D beyond. nice to meet you all.
how do i find my link so I can give my players to find me here?
You can create an invite link to this server via the drop down menu with the big green tick on it
thank you
Hello im new here, looking to find games and roleplay
Welcome! Check the instructions in #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with!
Ummm, hello everyone. I’m not really new to the server but I’ve never posted b4, but I am new to dnd. I actually just preordered the new core books today and was wondering if any of the digital extras (dice, backgrounds, etc) would be available on the 3rd of September when I get my early access or if I had to wait until the official release date for that stuff. Again, new here & this is only the 2nd thing I’ve ever gotten & 1st I’ve ever preordered before so I don’t know how it works ♾️🧠
Check #find-a-game
Guys, what is infusion for artificier, i am playing as it and all the party and dm are newcomers so we are stumped on what is it
It’s like a magical enhancement to a normal item, or a replica of a magic item. Have you read the Artificer class table? The Infusions feature should tell you what it does
no, what is a artificier art table?
Class table, every character class has a table showing their features
The class features for artificer explain how to infuse items, and directs you to the Infusions options
If you are playing as an artificer, what are you using to look up the rules?
Artificer as a class was made available in Eberron Rising from the Last War, and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
both have the full class table, details on all features, explanation on how to infuse items as well as the full list of Artificer Infusions
i'll try researching again, maybe i just need to use more of my brein cells
right well whatever you're using for your rules, find the Artificer class table and read through it, particularly the Infusing an Item section and the Artificer's Infusion list
If you don't own a copy of the rulebook and are just pulling whatever off the internet, I can't really help you there
Hello, im new to dnd and got no idea where to start. can someone help me out? i just wanna know how to get started
#learn-to-play has good info, and check out the pinned messages in this channel
Make sure to have a read of the Basic Rules
I’ve played dnd before maybe 2 or 3 times with a close knit group of friends. I’m looking to join a campaign however I’m a bit nervous to throw myself into a game with strangers :{ I have a bit of social anxiety and find myself to be more comfortable with others my age / with similar interests. What’s the best way to approach joining campaigns besides scrolling through #looking-for-players ??
Yeah look through #looking-for-players and even #looking-for-community to see if there’s a game or D&D server that looks interesting and works for you.
Many groups are fine with new to D&D players particularly if that player has made an effort to learn the basic game rules and mechanics and just vibes well with the rest of the group.
D&D gameplay does mean you do need to be willing to put yourself out there to tell the DM and group what your character is doing in game - you can think of it as a collaborative group make-believe game.
Say if I were to play DND with some of y'all do we chat or VC?
Depends on the group. Some people play over VC, some people play over text chat, some people play in person. Basically, any way you can use to communicate with other people, you can play D&D through it
How does the Homunculus servant work?
Its like a familiar in a nutshell with some other minor effects
The infusion explains how to use it in its description. I'd be happy to explain if you can be specific about which part confuses you, but I can't just summarize the whole thing
How do I make a post in #looking-for-players ? I'm brand new and I don't see an option to post there x(
Might need to give it half an hour. Then it's /looking-for-players in any channel and fill in the blanks on the form.
I see! And then if I'm just looking for some people to play with in general, is #looking-for-players the best place to post? I tried reading about it in #find-a-game but I was still a bit confused
It's just a little confusing because I'm learning a lot of new terms all at once
Are you trying to join as a player or as a DM?
Looking for DM is advertising yourself as ready to join a group. That's you saying hi, I'm sabbath, I like long walks on the Sword Coast and smiting evil, I'm available 6-11pm Eastern weekdays and can do voice or text.
Looking for players is where DMs say Adventurers Wanted! Come delve into this tomb/ adventure of sky-piracy/ the machinations of the Fae Courts, Friday at 7pm Mountain Time, microphone required, Owlbear Rodeo.
As a player
Then your best option is to simply reply to posts in #looking-for-players.
Ok that makes much more sense! Thank u Mr Smith
But if you want to submit your own post in #looking-for-dm, you can do that by using the </looking-for dm:1074431147045568613> command.
Thanks !!
Best off like spamandtuna suggests, in my opinion. Browse looking-for-players, see if you see a game at a time you can make in a format you can do, and make polite inquiries in their thread.
Yeah, you'll have a lot more luck replying to DMs than waiting for them to reply to you.
Hi i am new to dnd. I have a essentials kit ( the one with the White dragon) but i dont have people to play it with and i understand the rules. I have been watching a lot of videos but i still dont understand all of it. Is there a party that could help me and were i can play with? I am Dutch so English is my second language so its a little harder to understand and play.
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups, but was there a specific part of the game we can help you understand?
Hi, i dont understand the levelling system, how to use spells and i find it hard to make characters.
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at 1st level and advances in level by adventuring. Gaining a level improves your attributes, can unlock new class features or new spells, and generally increases your might as an adventurer.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. In these campaigns, experience points (XP) fuel level advancement and are most often the reward for completing combat encounters. When your total XP reaches certain thresholds, you gain a level.
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
A character can grow to a maximum of 20th level. Your DM might have you begin at a higher level, or might end the campaign at a lower one. Some games continue past 20th level with the use Epic Boons.
Basically there's two main ways to level up, described above. Which one the group uses is generally up to the DM.
Thanks!!
The essentials kit assumes you're using Milestone.
There's some info at the end of the first chapter that describes when to have players level up.
So you just do stuff and get xp and when you hit a point you level up and get more spells and attack moves?
If you're playing with XP, yeah!
XP is most commonly earned by defeating monsters, but a DM can give it out as rewards for other things, too.
Like solving a puzzle or whatever.
Thank you!! I am going to look for a server to join and try to learn more stuff, but really thank you!!!
Thanks!
can anyone give advise on backstories? I biffed hard as I was looking at the wrong coast and picked Waterdeep as my hometown, too bad we are in the Pirate Isles. I guess my question lies in when and how much info do you give when you first introduse a character and how detailed to you go in describing a character? Do most players want the details or would they rather hear the short and look at my sheet if interested
oooff I did not spell check
Three Sentence Backstory!
I have a picture for an artificer art table to send ya. just email me or show me how i can send you a pic i made for your answer. Hope it helps.
As in, upbringing, how you got your class, why you adventure.
As to the other, unless it's important to your game that you're from the locale, why worry? Perhaps you moved.
Thats a very good point, what ties me to the world is more important than hometown. I got flustered AF when they were like "how'd you get here!?" meanwhile the session literally started with a guy coming out of a portal lol (not me)
I like a good Swiss cheese backstory, as both a player and a DM.
Enough to give a taste of the character, but full of holes.
All you really need is a few sentences that explain why this person is important to the start of the story and what motivates them to pursue the adventure ahead.
If it doesn't directly matter to the start of the adventure, leave it out or leave it vague.
Your DM might work with you to fill in some of those holes and better tie your character into the specific story, or they might use them to surprise you down the road.
Hello
But it's also worth talking to your DM about what kind of information they're looking for in a backstory.
Haii
Welcome welcome!
Is there a way to share pics i make of buildings, places or people for players to use freely? I would love to bring your thoughts to life. Ok i Just Learned I can't show my A.I. created stuff. how do i fix this and take that stuff down before i get in trouble. I admit my mistake.
yeah we had a plan to meet before but she had to push it, plus I was jumping is session 6 so the other characters have been playing together for weeks
Ah. In that case, an early word with the party of players might have been a help. Perhaps one of them could have said you're an old friend they haven't seen for ages, or someone they used to work with, or to have heard a few rumours about (some true, others not).
hey there, I would need some help to post a campaign I am working on with some friends rn.
I know the #find-a-game channel is meant for that, but I am not sure if I just need to say its a Magi campaign or if I need to like basically send in a ready post like in #looking-for-dm etc?
Would appreciate the help, thank you!
When you use the </looking-for players:1074431147045568613> command, you'll be given a private form to fill out.
Once you provide the details and hit submit, it will post to the #looking-for-players channel and open a thread.
oh thank you very much!
what if I look for players and dms tho? should I just send my submissions in all 3?
In that case, you probably want to use #looking-for-community.
If your game does not meet either of the criteria above, yours is a community game. Other common indicators for community games include:
- You're running a West March or something similar to one.
- Your game is designed for more than 10 total players.
- You're looking for both players and DMs.
- You regularly offer one-shots or other game-finding services.

umm hii I’m like totally completely new to dnd…. I’ve basically just read the basic rule book and the player handbook and I don’t really understand how should I proceed.
Welcome! There's no right or wrong answer on what to do next, though.
Have you tried making a character? Have you found a group to play with? Did you have any questions about the rules?
Maybe try making a character? Just as practice, to see how the parts come together.
I did make a character thru dnd beyond. it’s just it seems like there’s a lot less options than baldur’s gate and i’m not sure why
It might be because you don't own anything on D&D Beyond, so you just have access to the basic rules
ahh ok
where'd i go to find a dm, I see the #looking-for-dm chat but I can't talk in it
Hey everyone
#find-a-game has more detailed instructions on the process, but basically, you need to use the server bot to fill out a form which will automatically generate a post in those channels
hey, i’m completely new to dnd! i’m not really sure where to start; any suggestions? i have a group to play with and i’m currently working on building a character, though i’m not sure if there’s anything else i should be doing
Just make yourself a character and try to be creative in what they can do,and have fun!
thank you!!
Same here, tho I already have a character I made
ohh that’s cool! i’m still working on mine lol
Yeah I'm just looking for a group to play, but I'm too shy
(Been looking for like 4 years because I have social anxiety lol)

Heya! I'm still pretty new to D&D, I was able to create one character and I have another one in mind I just don't have her stats and things like that written down yet. I'd like to start playing again as soon as I can. I may need a little walkthrough at first but I promise I can latch on pretty fast.

Is custom background considered homebrew?
Customizing your background using the rule set in the PHB (p.126) isn’t homebrew, but you might want DM approval just in case
Hey everyone, I hope you are all doing well, I just was trying to play DND with chat gpt and it was a really good experience and was wondering if any of you would appreciate to play a game with me, I I would really love to learn everything about this game 🙂
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Do attacks use the same modifier for attack roll and damage roll
You use the same stat modifier, but they might be different total numbers
Due to other things being added to either number as well
So the stat modifier is always the same?
Basically. I won't rule out edge cases, but usually yes. Swing sword with Strength, apply Strength modifier to the attack and the damage rolls.
👍
Modifiers to the Roll
When a character makes an attack roll, the two most common modifiers to the roll are an ability modifier and the character's proficiency bonus.
Ability Modifier
The ability modifier used for a melee weapon attack is Strength, and the ability modifier used for a ranged weapon attack is Dexterity. Weapons that have the finesse or thrown property break this rule. Some spells also require an attack roll. The ability modifier used for a spell attack depends on the spellcasting ability of the spellcaster.
hello! So if everybody completed their character sheet and got the world ready, do we just start playing the game...? Uhh sorry if this is the wrong channel I'm new here :)
i mean generally yeah, the dm usually makes sure all of the stuff on the sheets is what it should be, and then you just start
wohoo that's good news! Thank youu :)
are changelings a "legal" race to play as?
Whether they can be used in a specific campaign is generally going to be up to the DM
what happens when the DM isn't okay w that but it's the only character i have?
You build a new character or you decide you'd prefer to play a different game
The only D&D games with 'official' rules on what's legal is organized play. Otherwise, it's purely up to the DM
What’s the best bard subclass not for combat but just to have insane convincing/rizz tactics to get npcs to do everything I want
College of Eloquence has some great bonuses to Persuasion/Deception checks. But it’s important to note neither skill is mind control
see to #character-discussion
I think eloquence would work well
nothing is mind control though (unless you use something that is mind control or similar, like suggestion or dominate person)
suggestion is nice because it's explicitly given as an example of a spell that common NPCs might not even realize was casted on them (in sage advice)
unlike other charm spells where the target knows after the spell ends
Hello am I wanted to ask if there's a way to join a d&d party I haven't got my character yet but am happy if someone lend me a hand
Hi! id be happy to help you with character creation! I do not have room for a new player right now tho! @stable horizon
That would be great but what can I do to get started
Well you can start by getting D&D Beyond I suppose. It has the necessary materials to get together to build a character. If your buying books for pen and paper I can explain that too.
I was curious if dnd was something I’d be able to do completely with just a phone and if so how, are there apps to download?
Possible but not easy imo
Yeah You can use it pretty much with just your phone and/or a laptop! when I first started as a player I used D&D Beyond on my phone only. Ive been playing for about two years now and I use my desktop and laptop to access it.
Personally I think phone only is easier if you're playing in person and just using it for the character sheet/dice
Trying to run most of the virtual tabletops on your phone tends not to go well
this is true, if your playing virtual tabletops, the phone will be a pain. If you had say an ipad open to a virtual tabletop and your phone open to your character sheets it would probably be ok
What’s the best race for lore bard
Whatever is fun for you and fits your game/group
What class can wield a two-handed weapon.
If a class is profiencient in a type of class of weapons, they can use a two-handed weapon of that weapon class.
For instance, someone proficient in martial weapons could use a longsword with two-hands.
Two handed weapons aren't specific to any class, but a weapon itself, and all classes (as far as I recall) can use simple weapons, which include a greatclub as a two-handed weapon, and quarterstaff and a spear as versatile weapons which can optionally be wielded with two hands for higher damage die
Theoretically anyone. By using feats, race, and classes you can give a big ole axe to anyone you want
Okay then.
There’s going to be certain classes that utilize two handed weapons better, such as fighter, barbarian, and paladin
What are the pros and cons of being a fighter class?
Ok ok at the moment I have a few ideas of some of the monsters and lore(kind of) it's just race a class
Pros: reliable damage, main combat loop utilizes very few resources, can build for a variety of combat styles, subclasses have very distinct and fun flavor
Middle: mechanical simplicity
Cons: limited mechanically coded out-of-combat utility
And that’s just a brief overview of the Fighter, the pros/cons are going to be slightly different for every table as a class’s effectiveness can be greatly affected by the game their in
How about barbarian and paladin?
Ill keep both more brief to not make walls of text but:
- Barbarians trade a lot of defense for boosted single target offense. They’re often relegated to “tank” status, though MMO-style tanking requires DM buy-in as aggro isn’t a 5e mechanic. Their weaknesses are often in their stat spread, as their core features are reliant on multiple ability scores (MAD).
- Paladin gets some spellcasting, massive NOVA potential, and really good defensive abilities. They’re slightly less MAD than the barbarian. A big disadvantage of paladins is that they have little to no ranged options.
Overall I would look through the basic rules and see what class speaks to you. A lot of these weaknesses sprout from a systemic analysis and comparison, whereas in practice a good DM can make each and every class shine
What’s more important is if a class feels good for you to play, regardless of its pros/cons
Hello!
If you like the idea of playing a character that can shift their appearance at-will, but cannot play a Changeling in your table's setting, you could play a Warlock, and take the Mask of Many Faces invocation at level 2. This invocation allows you to cast Disguise Self at-will, which almost does what the Changeling can do, just as well.
Sorry if a lot of these things dont make sense at the moment, I hope it at least gives you a direction you can start reading into
hey im new and dont know what im doing
you are not alone my friend, I have played one session
GASP! Same here, LMAO!! Hello everyone!! I'm hoping to learn some DnD things and eventually find a pretty solid group. This would be my first time playing so HERE'S HOPING!
I watched a bunch of videos to start, seasoned players seems to diss on Critcal Role but I found it a great into. StartPlaying is a great site to get started with online games
*intro
I did a LITTLE bit of a game with some friends, so I know like about as basic as basic can get, LMFAO!! Other than that, Critical Role is my only knowledge, haha!!
the first session was scary and I made mistakes but I am beyond excited to play again next week. My suggestion is play around with the character build on Beyond. I just figured out that by jumping levels I can kinda check what I want later and back track from there
its good TV and I say if it brings more players all the better, as long as you remember they are voice actors and have been friends for years but I have found nothing from support from DMs, they are the true heros!
*nothing BUT support
Yeah remember that critical role is a bunch of performers and they've been playing for years
Expecting your game to be like CR is like if you start an amateur sports league to be Olympic level
and same! We tried to do the Rick and Morty one and it was a horror show, first lesson was you can describe cut scene and don't have to go square by square through halls and stuff lmao
totally agree, there are some drama kids out there for sure and player/DMs that get way into it but watch some of CRs early stuff, same story
i havent palyed a single one yet
Its a fun learning tool for sure though
I have trouble watching it these days because I twitch when they get the rules wrong 😅
I haven't watched it how often do they do that
I thought about it for months and months, don't stress. My first game was Monday and I thought about bailing up until logging in
Hard to say objectively. But I can only shout "faerie fire doesn't work that way" at my computer so often 🤣
not knowing much I would say they stretch the rule of cool pretty thin
It goes to show that you don't actually need to know/follow the rules exactly to play d&d
But is also a good reminder that things they do may not work in other games
so far I have found that its really up to the DM
I am currently playing a skeletal bard, troubled past to say the least but lets just say he wants to end it, too bad the gods have other plans. I have advantage on death saving throws just because the DM liked the idea
I am a skeleton so I can cast stink cloud on myself and mage hand is my actual hand that comes off
so yeah loving it so far lmao
Ooooh, that sounds VERY very cool though!! OOO:
I love the mage hand twist, that's really funny and could DEFINITELY make for some top tier moments!!
she also liked that my first couple questions were "can I use magic mouth as a back up singer and are there any other musicians on the ship (we are pirates) so I can roll with the band"
I think if you can sell well enough
anything is possible
LMFAOOOO!! I love that so much though!!
I've been kinda toying with the idea of having a character with like...I dunno, a spectral arm?? I guess?? That kinda has a mind of its own and he's cursed with it. Stemming from a tragic event that led to the death of his children, who's spirits are like-- trapped in the arm and can now be used in like a "raise the dead" kinda way (which he hates). All necromancer style? But I'm not really sure if that's plausible in DnD or if that's too much... 😂
so on Critical Role they had something that would fit this, you could get the boost from the arm most of the time but have to roll a "stress" dice, fail and some of that curse turns, like a summon but no control of the ghosts
so yes totally
I beleive the necromancer build is either Paladin or Cleric but there is a way to do it for sure, then the arm just needs its homebrew flavor
totally! there check these videos, he will make you feel great about any of your choices
search crap guild to dnd on the Tube
I have a the Basic Rules (2014) / Player’s Handbook (2014) races
I but I don’t know what dnd races to play
Which one seems most appealing to you?
Either aesthetically or mechanically or lorewise, or any other metric, really
def check the crap guild to dnd on the youtube. Just watched fighter and might check that out next lmao
Could always leave it to a die roll, or try something you haven’t before!
Okiedokies, thank you!! :DDDD
Elf is a fantastic option with a lot of subraces, I’m a big fan of Wood Elves myself
Which ones better high elf or wood elf
great choice, elves don't have to rest as long as other characters and don't really sleep so the make great watchmen for the group, they usually have high perception too so they catch things others don't. Depends on what you like, are you on DnDByond?
Both are near equal, I’d take a look at both and determine which one appeals to you more
No need for much in-depth analysis, especially if you’re new. Go with your gut
I have Dragonborn
Basic Rules (2014) / Player’s Handbook (2014 Dwarf elf Half-Elf Half-Orc Halfling Human Variant Human Rock Gnome Tiefling all of them are in Basic Rules (2014) / Player’s Handbook (2014)
What races do you guys recommend
Especially in Basic Rules (2014) / Player’s Handbook (2014)
Out of the PHB races I really like Humans, Elves, and Dragonborn
I honestly like all of them and they all have pros and cons. That's part of why people recommend doing what seems cool to you
Whereas I probably lean toward halflings, tieflings and dwarves
But I also have a thing about duplicates and have almost never been the same race (if you count the variations as different) more than twice
What are you rolling?
They are good! I will say the updated Dragonborn from Fizbans generally have better combat utility, but that’s not to discount PHB Dragonborn
There breath weapon
I like that they are dragons
It’s just I wish they had more
It’s not fantastic but it’s still a good emergency option. In combat it might not have that much utility but thankfully D&D isn’t a pure combat game.
Think past combat effectiveness and explore the possibilities within the other 2 pillars of D&D (exploration & social encounters). Therein lies a lot of cool stuff you and your DM could do with “bad” features
My last Dragonborn I played was actually a PHB dragonborn, and they were perfectly fine. I didn’t use their breath weapon that much, but the narrative I could construct with them was way more important. Likewise, consider combat utility as only one part of the character you want to play. The aesthetics, in-world lore, narrative possibilities, and more are all ideas to consider when choosing any aspect of your character.
i just attempted to make my first chara with dnd beyond 👀
Nice congrats!
thanks!!
Good job
thank!
i need to do more work on background, thats the hardest part!
Did you join a game with that characters in mind or are you just creating in the meantime
creating in the meantime!
but i do know some ppl who play the same chara over years im many different campaigns
I personally think that is waste but I understand if they didn't feel they fulfill what they wanted to do
i think i more want to try and get a hang of playing to then learn how to construct a chara for a specific campaign, if that makes sense?
There is no harm in that
i agree!
Also i know some dm like to know if the player have characters in mind to see if they are good fit so it's never a bad idea
yeah! the people i know tend to play with each other as a group so they all work together and take it in turns to be DMs
it's a nice group, from what i hear! sounds like such a wonderful and safe space to learn grow skills and just have fun
Are you gonna join them sounds fun?
i wish i could, but they aren't taking anyone new atm (they've had some negative expriances in the past, which is totally understandable)
but i am hoping to find a game that is pbp to start, given i feel more comfortable in a written setting
I see i could never pbp but i understand the pros and cons
i would love to work up to voice, but it scares me a lot haha
Try to find a one shot if you are scared there is not much commitment at least
that's the goal!
Welcome! You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to find a group within this server!
Is there a place to read into a spoiler free version for campaign books ? or do i just discuss the vibe of a campaign with my dm ? Stormkings thunder or strahd for example
What about talking with the other player in the campaign?
Well they have no clue so far, we are just starting in a few weeks 🙂
Just ask your dm it's your best bet then
Hi
Welcome!
thank you, how are you?
Pretty good, you?
I feel good too.
I'm playing D&D for the first time, does anyone know if a party can be assembled here?
You can read through the instructions in #find-a-game to find a group to play with using this server specifically
Voicing your character?
I really don't want to, but basically all games require it
No like vc
A lot of that comes from overcoming the hurdles of anxiety. I think it can be very hard to speak to a new group, especially if you're expected to participate in a long-form group activity like D&D
I'd really rather just do it via text in a more RP type format
I think the biggest way to overcome that hurdle is by speaking with your DM a little and finding a way to comfortably integrate your character into the party. Give yourself enough time to think about everything you want to say, and then enough time to say it.
Hello! I've never play DND before and I want to learn how to play, can anyone help ?
I think if you're up front there's workarounds, like talking very little and working towards speaking more. In my experience this comes naturally as your group becomes closer, potentially even to friendship levels.
Of course if you truly don't want to entertain the idea of VC, there are styles of games to accomodate that. The most popular of which are called Play-By-Post (PBP) games that are entirely text based. These games are also typically asynchronous in case you have an inconsistent schedule. They are rarer than traditional format games, but not so much that you'd wait a long amount of time to find one.
My problem specifically is that i'm trans and i'm taking vocals lessons but I'm not sure how much longer it'll take
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Are you worried you might be made fun of for your voice?
Okay! Ty
Not made fun of, I know people are kind, but I just don't really feel confident in it yet
That's fair. I'd go with the ideas I mentioned before. PBP is a great no-vc solution after all, but it's not always a perfect fit (i.e. if you wanted a regularly scheduled game, or be able to hear other people)
I think i'll look for those, then. How do I actually go about doing that?
You can use #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully) within this server. Pretty much anywhere else online where you can advertise D&D games can have PBPs advertised. As with general LFG advice, the wider you search the better chance you'll have at finding a game.
Outside of this server I recommend checking Reddit's r/lfg

Hello everyone
Hi
Hello
Had my first in person one-shot and it was an amazing experience. Been lurking too long and I regret all that waiting
Nice! What kind of character did you play?
We've also got #tales-from-the-table if you want to share your favorite moments.
I cant seem to get anyone to take me on as a player. 😦
Oh, cool, I'll check it out
Yeah, finding a game can be tricky no matter how long you've been playing.
What have you tried so far?
That might change if you get interested in the VTT Project Sigil...sure is going to open a lot of doors for remote players
And I was a rogue, can't help but be a stealthy character. Too much Metal Gear, Splinter Cell games growing up
I keep applying and giving (what I think at least) are good impressions on interviews, only for them to message me after saying that Im not the right fit
like the interviews go well and im given the impression ill be invited to play
only to get a complete 180 after the fact.
I think not being a fit in every game is a blessing not a curse...
Honestly, I wouldn't take it personally.
And they were honest with you you gotta appreciate that
i think what is sapping my enthusiasm is the constant recurrance of getting my hopes up and things are looking good, only to be told the exact opposite after the fact
like I get good feedback, and then im dropped
There's so many more players than DMs that they kind of get an open pick.
True
So even if you don't do anything wrong, they might just click with another person more.
Like I said NOX hang in there..Project Sigil will open a lot of doors
Group dynamics are weird. 😅
I just want some friends, really. My house burnt down in 2021, and i had to pick up and move out of state and start over again and I lost all my irl friends and its just been a damn struggle
I know the feeling I basically got burned out of Oregon and had to do the same thing about the same time you did
Do you have any local game stores nearby?
not really
can you import HeroForge models into Project Sigil?
Not as far as they've said.
Well I THINK we will be able to...Spam may know more
But they haven't said much.

Quick question, Im reading silver tongued adds 1 to your charisma. Is this while you use it or is it forever?
it's forever. It's a half feat. Theres a lot of them in the game
