A couple could change it one of the dwarf sub races gives a bonus
So basically after the oneshot I asked if i could try to make a character and we would take it more seriously. I have no experience with D&D btw. The race I think looks the coolest is Tiefling
Based on the description it seems like the race is sort of wizard like so does that make me weaker because wizards are supposed to have low hitpoints
Any race can be any class
Yes wizards have a low hit dice but have some of the most powerful spells
Thank you for the clarification
Can you mix any race together and if you do. Do you only get half of the bonuses for each race. Also how much does your history or the background of your character play into your skills and stuff
i just want to play dnd im a total noob no idea how to start so im just looking for a server that wants to start a campine with a noob like me
You can’t mix races like that you would pick the stats/traits of one race
So if you started multi class would all bounus for the classes apply or do you need to be a higher level in the second class
You can’t multi class at lvl 1
As long as you meet the requirement you can take a lvl in a different class starting at lvl 2
Thank you
Do people run campaigns on here or something I’m new to dnd but have really wanted to play for years I would love help learning the only experience I have if you can call it that is baldurs gate 3 lol
Can I join a campaign?

Hi! In character creation. Is there a list of what kind of traits i can add and how many? Like lucky trait, resilience etc.
features and traits are usually for the race/class abilities, some thing like dark vision would go there
so there isnt a list really, its all dependent on what race/class
no traits are a different thing
just look up dnd 5e traits you cn add them instead of an ability score increase
ohhh i just got what you meant
its all to do with race you cant change them
@next quail it is given int the Race, subrace, Class, And background.
Also Subclasses
Question: Is there any rule aplying to boat race or how to manage boat control in a combat scenario like using tripulants streng/dex modifier to roll something and determine speed or i can invent rules?
Rules for sailing and ship combat were introduced in one of the adventure models, Ghosts of Saltmarsh. It’s found in Appendix A of that book
Tanks! 👍
No, they’re boats

So the Aracokra of our party almost died. He lost his wings. How long will it take to regrow his wings?
Is there any spell that can hasten the process?
The rules don't mention how long a natural regrowth would take (or whether it's even possible).
The Regenerate spell can restore lost limbs:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2227-regenerate
There is the Regenerate spell which can regrow limbs, but it's a level 7 one. Best bet is to ask the DM, and maybe they can make some kind of sidequest 😛
But it's a 7th level spell, yeah.

Looking at groups wish me luck
Is critical hit a thing
Yes - a natural 20 roll on an attack is called a critical hit.
It hits regardless of AC
What is AC
Armor Class
Oh ok
Have to meet or beat it to hit
When you make an attack roll, you roll a d20, add any modifiers, and compare it to the target's Armor Class (AC) to determine if the attack hits.
If the number you roll on that d20 is a 20, that's a critical hit.
So again, it hits regardless of the target's AC.
And you also roll the damage dice for the attack twice to determine the total damage.
Hey im looking for a good place to find people for my first game. I understand that there is a looking for players, however of the 3 groups I've tried playing with there have been zero sessions and 2 of them have now disbanded. Is there any better way to look for a group?
I made a guide to help folks navigate the LFG waters: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
Thank you very much
Hey Razor, I typically play at a physical table, and I'm looking to now get into the online scene. Is there anything I should prepare on Roll20 or other online sites that people use, like a character sheet? Like, what's the expectation for what somebody should normally have prepared?
The DM for the game will likely decide what platforms are used, if any. You might poke around some of the popular digital tools like D&D Beyond, Owlbear Rodeo, and Roll20 just to see how they function, but I don't think that's strictly necessary. I don't think there's anything online players need to prep ahead of time. Have character ideas, know the rules broadly, and be a good member of the table.
In that regard, it's really no different from physical play.
Thanks! I was a little worried because I see a lot of campaigns listed with DnDBeyond and I don't have much of anything in there.
You may be expected to build a character with whatever online tool the group is using, but if DDB is a requirement, I would generally expect the DM to share a campaign
Otherwise, for roll20 at least, it's pretty easy to manually enter the stuff you actually need even if you haven't purchased it
Hey! Completely new to this. I’ve wanted to get into dnd for a while but haven’t known where to begin. Does anyone have any tips and stuff on getting started, character building etc?

Thank you! I did have a skim through it earlier but I’m going to go through and try and create a character now
Sorry if this is the wrong channel but what channel do you put the #looking-for-dm command in?
Do /looking-for-dm in any channel.
alright thanks, just worried if It would make smth pop up or smth!
I really want to play dnd but im so confused by everyone
I already have a character and back story tho im just a bit confused by the game
Confused by what specifically?
Like how to even play in the first place and the rules and that stuff
There's a good interactive tutorial here that goes over the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
But if you've got any specific questions, fire away!
So I already have a character and hes and elf but i dont know how to do his stats and spells and that stuff
Im very inexperienced
So you're still trying to fill out your character sheet? Or you've got it filled out and don't know what certain parts of it mean?
Ive filled it out
Then what you mean by "i dont know how to do his stats"?
You don't know how to do what with them?
Like i dont know how much is too much and too little
Let's focus in a little. Which specific stat do you want to know more about?
HP? AC? Strength? Something else?
Wait now im even more confused
You can pick hp?
Your HP maximum is determined primarily by your class and your Constitution modifier.
😅😅😅 right
Wizard
I think he wouldn’t be leven 1
But i dont know whats okay and whats not okay
Class health is determined by rolling a number of particular dice equal to your character level and adding your constitution modifier to that. Wizard health is determined by with a d6 standard gaming die
😰
Level 1 is the lowest level (and the typical starting point), but characters can start at higher levels with the DM's permission.
So if you start at level 1, your health will be 6+constitution
Until/unless your DM tells you to start at a higher level, though, the safest option is to assume you start at level 1.
Because hes been through stuff
Oh okay 👍
So yeah, each class has what's known as a Hit Die. You get one for each level, so a level 1 wizard has 1 Hit Die.
The two most common places are level 1, for obvious reasons, and level three as most character classes get their subclass then. But like he said stick with level 1
The size of that Hit Die will vary depending on the class, but wizards use a d6.
It’s easier to level up a character than it is to level down
At level 1, every character starts with the maximum possible number on that hit die.
So since a wizard uses a d6, you start with 6.
Then you also add your Constitution modifier.
😥
If you've got a high Constitution modifier (which you probably want as a wizard), then your max HP will increase.
A level one wizard with +2 Constitution would add 6 + 2 for a total of 8 HP.
Ik it seems like a lot, but once you get your character done, it won’t seem that overwhelming. Once you build one, you can build the rest
Wowie
What's your Constitution modifier?
No idea
Not a problem!
Do you know where the ability scores are listed on your character sheet?
Should be six big boxes, probably down the left-hand side or along the top.
Labelled as Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Yeah
If you've already filled it out, each of those boxes should have one number from 1-20 (your ability score) and second number from -5 to +5 (your ability modifier).
Yeah
So your Constitution modifier is that second number under Constitution.
I would recommend playing D&D’s Adventurers League and using that avenue to form a group.
That’s what I have done and we’ve been playing in as a group on weekly basis for over 2 years.
Were you able to find it, then? Whatcha got?
-2
Bingo
So this is where having a high Constitution score is very helpful, especially for squishy wizards. 🙊
what is D&D Adventurers Group
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:

Because for your max HP, since you start with 6 and add your Constitution modifier (-2), that means you have a total of 6 - 2 = 4 HP.
Oops

Uh oh
Thank you very much
Spellcasters also want a high Constitution score because it helps you maintain concentration on your more powerful spells.
So if you can shuffle your ability scores around to bump Constitution up higher, you'd really benefit.
For a wizard, I'd want INT, CON, then DEX as my highest scores, in that order.
Sorry I have been following along with the advice. Looked at my character sheet and my constitution has an 8 and a -1. Would my HP then be reduced by 1?
Yep!
Generally speaking, I never make my characters without CON in my top three ability scores -- for this very reason.
Same. It's rarely a good idea to have a negative bonus in that stat.
Every class needs HP.
What class is your character?
Barbarian
Th guide said it’s a good starter class for newbies
Thank you! 🙂
Yeah, barb doesn't have a lot of "levers," so to speak, so it's not too complicated to learn.
Strength will improve your melee weapon attacks (both accuracy and damage). Dexterity will improve your Armor Class, making you harder to hit. And Constitution will improve your max HP, so that you can survive more hits.
So I made my character on dndbeyond is there a way to fix it or do I have to make a new character?
This helped
You should be able to make adjustments to the character. What method did you choose for stats?
Yep! Just click your character name, and then select "Manage Character & Levels" to get back into the character editor.
question about spells - i understand some classes get their spells recet after a short/long rest. but as a cleric the book says i am to meditate an hr a day. Is this something i have to announce or is it assumed once per day i have meditated and i can get my spells back?
Alternatively, you can go back to the character list and click "Edit" for that character.
The basic one can’t remember what it was called
Standard Array?
As you play more in AL one shots you’ll bump into some of the same people.
As I continued to bump into the same people, I reached out to the people I really enjoyed playing with to form a group.
This eliminated a couple of hurdles because we had established history and aligned availability.
Standard array? You should be able to move those scores using the editor spam referred to.
Yes that’s the one!
Effectively, any time a Cleric finishes a long rest, they can change which spells they have prepared.
So if your group has taken a long rest, you can just swap those around as you see fit.
The only time you wouldn't be able to is if you're ambushed upon awakening.
You need to tell the DM. If you don't, it's sort of cheating to say, "Well, I did X, I just didn't tell you." They are the referee as well as the world and other characters, so everything has to be clearly conveyed to them.
Because you didn't get your however-many-random-minutes to meditate.
While the rules mentioned is outdated, this video by puffing forest goes over what AL is like: https://youtu.be/0O_77DTXVgI?si=zNruGABh3yZ5giTm
yeah the way its worded in the book makes it sound like (for example) "everyday at dawn most clerics will meditate and therefore reset their spells"
but i understand what you guys are saying. that was just my example
You don't have to change your spells. You just have the option.
Thank you for the help, my constitution is now +2 🙂
Confusion -2
Now I just need to learn how to play the game and find a group 😂
#learn-to-play should help!
Thanks!
Finding online games in EU timezones is pretty rough. Most i see are EST or CEST. Im not a fan of one shots at 2am BST lol
I found the players handbook really really helpful when learning (Not the 2024 one the 2014 one). I prefer the physical copy but you can buy the digital one from dnd beyond
Just for context ive only played 3 times (one shots) but reading the handbook really helped
Thank you for this I will go and have a look now 🙂
I’m also BST and 2am won’t be working for me 😂 I’ll hunt around for a decent BST game time lol
The conventional wisdom is not to worry about timezones but just schedule compatibility. If your evenings are someone else's mornings (or vice versa), go for it!
If youre anything like me you will be hooked. Enjoy it
Yes! As long as it’s at a time I can work around I will be happy regardless of what timezone others are in
Ive PM'd you
#dnd-rules would be the best place to ask.
Sorry
No worries. Just pointing you in the right direction!
When you use a long range attack do you need to check for perception
Not according to the rules.
Sick
To make an attack at any range, you’d make an attack roll.
Your total is then compared to the target’s Armor Class (AC) to determine whether you hit or miss.
If your total equals or exceeds their AC, you hit. Anything less, and you miss.
If conditions are such that you’d have a hard time seeing a target, you may have disadvantage on the roll.
Yours, or your target’s?
The target’s
A target with a higher Constitution will have more hit points, so they can take more hits.
No? They have more health
So they can sustain more damage without falling unconscious
They have more hit points, so they have to take more damage to reduce them to 0 hit points.
Just say they get more hp this “hit points” thing is making it confusing
Ok
guys i need help, where can i find some people to play with? like is there some sort of website or do i just stumble upon some or how does it work???
can i even ask here?
same im extremely new
same lol
i watch a lot of vids on it and it looks cool
You can also check your local game stores for potential one shot sessions for beginners.
i played 2 sessions with my friends and t was so much fun, but it was like so amateur-based, i would like to know alot more
i think we didnt even play by the official rules of dnd
is there over call sessions becuse i cant get out much
You can check out the tags above for potential games, they have online, voice call, in person, and hybrid games.
Depends on the campaign, but there’s lots of options. You can browse the postings and find the details there.
Who has ran the strixhaven module?
Can someone find a dm or a group I could join?
They provide a ton of resources and instructions
Check #find-a-game if you want to look for a group within this server!
Will do!
Hi guys so im new to dnd and i already created my character but can someone explain to me whats initiative? on my sheet it shows that i have a 0+ initiative sdo im wondering if that ever goes up or it stays at zero? if anyone can explain that it would be greately appreciated :))
Your initiative modifier is your dex (unless your class says so)
When you start combat you roll for initiative which determines the order in which you take your turn
The person with the highest roll (plus their initiative modifier) goes first
And so on and so on
If two creatures roll the same initiative the one with the higher dex goes first
Your modifier goes up when you increase your dexterity
Or if your a swashbuckler rogue it goes up with your charisma
How do i increase my dexterity?
My Character is a mountain dwarf wizard
Your initiative bonus at base is the same as your dexterity modifier (in fact, it’s actually a dexterity skill check)
Certain races, subclasses, classes, feats, items, and other features may add other ability modifiers to the check (i.e. War Wizard, Swashbuckler Rogue, Alert Feat, Harengon race)
Outside of character creation and setting your stats there, you may increase your Dexterity score whenever you get an ASI as shown in your class table. Certain (powerful) magic items may also increase your Dexterity score
Some feats may also grant a bonus to your dex score, which you can take in place of an ASI
That’s not an official rule.
Though it is a common practice.
Oh
reading the basic rules rn and i'm very confused by this passage "Your character’s hit points define how tough your character is in combat and other dangerous situations. Your hit points are determined by your Hit Dice (short for Hit Point Dice).
At 1st level, your character has 1 Hit Die, and the die type is determined by your class. You start with hit points equal to the highest roll of that die, as indicated in your class description. (You also add your Constitution modifier, which you’ll determine in step 3.) This is also your hit point maximum.
Record your character’s hit points on your character sheet. Also record the type of Hit Die your character uses and the number of Hit Dice you have. After you rest, you can spend Hit Dice to regain hit points (see “Resting” in the Adventuring section)."
Whats the difference between hit die and hit dice ?
The second is the plural of the first
The type of hit die is the # of sides, ie d6, d8, d10 and the number is just how many you have
To expand on what Ratatoskr said, you have a "pool" of hit dice equal to your level. So a 1st level character has 1 hit die in the pool, a 2nd level has 2 and so on.
Whenever you take a short rest you can expend some hit dice from the pool to heal up (long rests work differently and can replenish your pool, read the resting section for more info). For example, If I'm a second level fighter (d10 hit die) and have 10/23 HP when I short rest, I might expend one of my hit die to regain 1d10+Con HP.
As the rule says, hit dice are also used to determine your max HP. A 1st level character has a max HP equal to the max roll of their hit die + their Con mod. So my level 1 fighter with a +3 Con would have 10+3 = 13 max HP. When you level up, you can either roll to increase your max HP or take the average. If you take the average, the average result to add will be shown in your class table. If you roll, you roll the die type your hit dice are and add your Con mod.
For example my fighter upon reaching level 2 can either take the average to gain 7 (average) + 3 (Con mod) = 10 max HP, or roll 1d10+Con. Unfortunately for my fighter, I rolled a 1 so he only gets 1+3 = 4 max HP for a total of 17 HP at level 2.
getting dices then im gonna check out a supposed dnd store! :)
I am kind of new with only one session in my time but I wanted to see if someone knows a dnd group for teens/allow them.

i have no experience 😭😭 but yeah im running into the same issue with the group thing
oh sorry for accidentally pinging 😭
I have a group I can invite yall to.
But right now there is only like 3 campaigns going on right now
They do some one shots here and there but I wanted something more active tbh.
if yall are cool with newcomers i'd be down to play sometime!! my timezone is EST but im available pretty frequently, in case timezones don't line up
Almost everyone has the same time
Hi
ayyy! east coast gang 💪
I'm a newbie here, I have just the concept of this, nothing more, how can i find a server?
In the find community page, I only came here since I cant see dyno's messages.
Ty!
Hello. Could anyone help me with making a character sheet? I'm doing this for the first time.
Dnd beyond is pretty good if you want to use that, it sorts everything and just tells you what is what.
What is it? A website would be ideal.
It is just called dndbeyond.com
You go to tools then character creator, might need to make a account.
Alright, got it. Thanks.
mhm
How far off from east coast? 11:50 pm
||isnt it the opposite side of the world..?||
Yeah, the people in my group like to start their games late. It would not do to well.

Hi I'm new to DnD! i mean ive always been into high fantasy so it wasnt exactly a huge step to get into it!
truly its the math that gets me messed up
why
There’s plenty of tools to simplify the math, especially with virtual character sheets. I highly recommend D&DBeyond since in my experience it hugely simplifies character creation and packages their digital sheets into a nice UI
as a beginner myself: it ain't that bad
number dyslexia.
The math is fairly elementary and is mostly adding/subtracting and very rarely multiplication. I highly recommend creating a character sheet, by yourself or with this discord’s guidance and the math won’t seem nearly as overwhelming
i retract my statement 😭
I highly dont recommend dnd beyond unless you want to spend 500 dollars on digital sourcebooks
I havent ever done a campaign but i did create a whole character on dnd beyond already 😂
hiya!!!!1!!
it sucks there are way more options than ddb
As someone who's also new to dnd and is ever living terrible at math, if u roll on google u can pick how many dice u roll and it totals it up for u. Calc apps are also nice to have ready and up
i got my first dice set finally
Slaaaaay
there are tons of websites that can help you with the maths
idk if ill ever have the oportunity to play but i just think its neat! and you can use em for other stuff to
Felt, I've been trying to find 15+ groups and can't find any campaigns open for the life of me 😭
does anyone know any like other ways to look for games other than the channel cause literally noones in my timezone 😭
real + my timezone
Liiterallyyy
Ive seen a reddit page dedicated to ppl looking for memebers
Wait achually?
lemme find it
I think I just found my sign to re-download Reddit omg
please be aest please be aest
Damn I'm mst
can i link stuff here?
my dms are open just incase u wanna send it there
Same
I mean this is just a byproduct of D&D being a company that needs to sell content. It’s great if you’re just starting out, but if you wanted extra content w/o paying finding a group that has content sharing is probably a good option. For in-person, local libraries might have D&D books on hand.
We also have #find-a-game right in this discord so you don’t shave to worry about going elsewhere
Reddit’s main TTRPG group finder is r/lfg
Aye i sent em
thats what im kinda saying noones in my timezone sadly and havent gotten a reponse to my post in looking ofr dm 😞
ty!!!
aye!
currently experiencing the uphill battle of trying to plan a campaign's beginning after watching too many professional actual-plays
I just got my boy a backstory i had no idea what i was doing
best way to do it tbh, better than mulling over everything
what do i do

Welcome!
Do I have to write something in Faith in the character builder?
Only if you'd like. Appendix B (I think) in the Basic Rules has a few lists of gods. Some DMs may do their own. But if you'd like to put down what your character believes in, go for it.
Thanks I just did not have anything in my ming
Many do. It's a popular option for voice and text-based games.
Most people use discord for text/voice, and roll20 for the game itself.
A website.
I got welcome to roll 20 let's get you set up and ready to play
Ok?
Do you have to do attack rolls for spiritual weapon?
Alright I just pressed create a character and I'm going the option of step by step
I think so???
Yes.
😭
I got some free starter adventures....and when did fallout join DnD?!?!
Yes. I played dnd online w my friends
Oh okay
On roll 20
It didn’t. It’s just a website that has a build plannerf for flt4.
Wizards of the coast......frozen sick and dungeon of the mad made...
I'm on DnD beyond in the character creator do I do milestone or xo gor advancement type?
I think milestone it's more story driven progression
Don't worry about the switches and sliders. Your first character is just for practice anyway.
Skip all of that.
Yes, it's a melee spell attack. https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2263-spiritual-weapon
Use the Standard Array.
what's meant to go next to the word total in the hit dice box on a character sheet?
the pdf file I'm using has a text box next to it separate from the main hit dice text box
How many hit dice you have. Same as your level.
so just the number 1 if I'm starting out?
Yes.
thx
Most settings don't have that. Appendix B (I think) in the Basic Rules has a few lists of gods. Some DMs may do their own. But if you'd like to put down what your character believes in, go for it.
Ah ok
Now I export to pdf?
So I was looking into making a character that focuses on making her own guns. I should be using artificer then right?
If you like. #character-discussion would be a place to share what you've made.
Artificer would be typical for anything involving technology, but also strongly dependent on the setting of the game you're playing.
Dm has said his fine with the idea of me having a character that makes their own scrap guns. Home made barely holding together stuff. But when I tried setting up a artificer artillerist for it in DnDB. It seemed to come out more like a spell caster? Or maybe I'm just being dumb and I should just flavour those spells in a more tech way.
Yes, artificer is pretty much a wizard with a screwdriver for a spell focus.
So my best option would be to just flavour the spells in a way I want them then?
hiya! should i make an appearence description for my character?
Absolutely. How do they stand, how do they walk, what's the condition of their armour and weapons, what first impression do they try to give (and what do they actually portray)?
trying to make up some tragic backstory right now how do people do this
Do warlocks get create undead I have an idea of character I've made while looking for groups

hey im new me and my friends where wondering if there's a module where one player gets to be a villain and the rest have to stop him or something someone in our party wants to be a villain and we wanna try a module so just want suggestions
I mean, technically all modules are like that, it's just that the player that gets to be the villain is the DM
yea fair i mean like something like way of the wicked where u aint following some thing to like "save a village" and instead destroy it
No, D&D focuses on being heroic
oof
hello im an artist. is it against the rules to ask random ppl for character sheets so i can draw them? I wanna start a portfolio but im bad as balls without referencing alrdy made characters
not that balls are bad
w
In D&D you either have everyone be heroes or have everyone be the villains in an evil campaign.
Being practical about this and choosing to have one player be a villain you'll likely get one of two outcomes.
Either the villain player character gets defeated, at which point they can't continue playing and just sits there watching the rest of the table continue to play.
Or the opposite happens and you have a group of people just watching the one player continue to play.
#moderator-support would be where to get clarity on server #rules.
aight so i talked to my friends and they would ok to all be evil and do an evil campaign
oki thank u
Since it looks like you'lll be DMing this feel free to stop by #dm-discussion if you want feedback on running such a campaign.

Hey, I'm an old GM, but Knew to Dnd 5e. I'd like to start running some games in it, already got into a game, but wanted to know if there are any great starter adventures for beginner GM's?
The Starter Set or Essentials Kit adventures (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, Lost Mine of Phandelver, and Dragon of Icespire Peak) are pretty newb friendly. If you want some free, lower-commitment options, check out The Delian Tomb, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff.

hi there! i'm new to dnd and theres a lot to look at
Welcome! And yeah, there’s quite a bit. 😅
Did you have any specific questions we can help with?
I'd just like a good place to get started I guess!
Should I just go ahead and make a character or find a game first?
I’d recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for different characters.
Then once you find a game, you can work with the DM to see which one fits best, and work together to add any final details.
But you’re welcome to start looking for a game whenever you think you’re ready.
#learn-to-play has a bunch of info to get you started, though.
There’s some advice here for creating a character: #learn-to-play message
where do i go to share dnd beyond character sheets for feedback?
#character-discussion usually
Hi there! technically not new to dnd, been playing just shy of two years now. If i wanted to post something that i'm making, like playing cards, that would go in #dnd-arts-and-crafts right?
Yep
If I wanted to maximize my access to different things on DnDbeyond as a beginner for character customization, what books would be the best to purchase? I live pretty isolated so I feel like going online is the best way for me to go.
Player's Handbook, definitely. After that, Tasha's and Xanathar's.
I saw a new player's handbook was being released but isn't out yet. Still better to grab the 2014 one in the meantime?
Everyone's got an opinion. I'm like, 90% sure the current PHB will be fine for you.

Hello, a newbie has joined the chat!
My name is Pav, and I've only tried a D&D once before years ago. Recently, I wanted to get more into it. Don't know almost any D&D terms used in-game, so if there's a vocabulary somewhere on the internet or here, I'd be pleased.
Same goes for me!
Welcome! There’s a good article here that covers some of the more common game terms.

Go to #find-a-game and read that it’ll show you the way
k thank you
Is it common that someone plays 2 campaigns at the same time? Or most people stick to one at a time
People can play in as many campaigns as they have the time for. The limit is your own schedule, energy or finances.
Hey guys I’m new to dnd and this chat can anyone give me tips
Like what
Ok, does anyone have some good yt videos for writing a campaign?
there's this line in the monk class; You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons. Does this mean i can choose beetween strengh and dexterity for my attack and damage rolls or it's now only dexterity ?
You can choose
But note if you choose to roll with strength for the attack, you have to roll with strength for the damage too and vice versa
understood ! Thank you for your help.

Yes
So does that mean you don’t need to roll anything
I mean to say is this effect permanent
When you gain +1 in your constitution modifier, you gain 1hp per level.
If you lose it, your hp goes down that much.
How do you lose a level
If something detracts from your constitution score
You don't lose levels, but certain effects may temporarily lower your constitution score.
I see
I have no more questions
About constitution
But I do for the weapons system
A player can choose to attack with a weapon correct
A player can choose to attack with a weapon they are holding
Can they switch weapons
You can draw or sheath a weapon as a free object interaction once per turn. You may also drop a weapon at any time without using an action.
As a result you could drop one weapon draw another one and still attack.
So you use one turn to switch weapons
And I assume you need one to pick a weapon up
If you don't want to drop the weapon then yes, you must use an action to draw or sheath one weapon, and the free interaction to draw or sheath the other
So unsheathing doesn’t need a turn
Hi
Hi
Drawing a weapon does not need a turn as long as you have not already used your object interaction.
Object interactions include things like drawing a weapon, opening a door, pulling a lever, or the like
I'm new and I have only ever touched the character creation on and beyond so I have no clue what im doing.
My friend from school said this game would be fun and cool he taught me how to brawl and I beat him.
So sheathing a weapon and unsheathing another doesn’t count as object interaction
Wait no
Is it just weapons or doee that include anything else
Like interaction with objects but it takes a whole turn
Same here brother, same here
Object interactions can be with any object in the environment or in your inventory
Can you say “I pick up a rock and toss it”
You can say that and the DM may require a check to see how well you are able to accomplish that (or no roll needed if they decide that makes sense and isn't difficult for your character to do in the given game context).
That needs two rolls though, one for picking it up and one for tossing
Or is picking up a rock insignifigant enough to be ignored
Yes
Ok
Picking up and tossing a rock would be an object interaction
When does it start to matter though
Trying to hit something with a rock would require an attack roll
It matters as part of action economy.
No no I mean you say it doesn’t matter because the action of picking up the rock is insignificant
What type of object is signifigant enough for it to matter
Picking up a rock may be insignificant (DM decides based on game context)
Like the lowest tier
If you're in combat and trying to scoop up a rock off the ground and toss it - then the DM may require rolls
A boulder?
I have but 1 question for who knows is a dnd game playable on discord channels and such?
Yes.
The DM decides if something is challenging enough to require dice rolls
?tag new online
So what matters isn’t the quality of the object but the situation the player’s in
Usually. The size of the object may also require dice rolls as the DM may decide it is more challenging to interact with
So it’s still up the DM after all
What if I picked up a dragon
Yes - the players tell the DM what their characters want to do. The DM decides if any dice rolls are needed, what rules are in effect, and what the results mean and in-game effects.
@somber roost That's a crazy question to ask
DM may allow your character to attempt to pick up a dragon or they may decide in the current game context it doesn't make sense and not allow it.
So they DO get a say in it
They could also decide I get eaten alive and ask for a whatever check correct?
@subtle phoenix aren't you new too???
They could, yes. Usually though a DM would probably say something like, "Are you sure you want to do that?" to help convey to players that the choices they are trying to make may not be good game choices.
Everything’s up to the DM then
Then wat did you mean by that deleted or canceled or whatever I'm new to discord message
It wasn’t I who deleted it
This server has crazy good bots
That's a good game choice if you ask me, if I pick up dragon I can throw dragon
No. The DM can't tell players how to play their characters.
Again D&D is a collaborative game and the players and DM should be working together to have fun together.
The dm is like a referee
So ? How would one find an online campaign
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

^ Read #find-a-game carefully.
So it’s a balance like when a DM makes a game too hard the players lose interest and leave but when it’s too easy they find it not challenging enough
There isn’t really a rule that says DMs can’t make newbies battle demon lords (according to the people on this server)
I mean a DM could try and do that but again do the players want to participate in such a story?
There's no rule, but it's be terribly unfun.
Just how much of the game can DMs control
All of it
The combat system is sturdy from what I can tell
Can a DM say “for today’s game everyone gets two actions per turn”
Think of the DM as the stage manager. They set the stage (world), tell the actors (players) the current stage context. Then let the actors (players) start interacting with the stage (world) and help direct the story along but they don't control the actors per se. They just decide how the players interactions interact with the world.
I can't really be answering lol idk what I'm talking about
Here
That would greatly distort the game rules and game expectations
The game rules provide the mechanics so folks understand what's generally possible within the game and know the game mechanic expectations.
Hello?
Hello
Let's keep on topic folks
I heard constitution also includes resistance to poison
Usually if you're afflicted by a poison you attempt to resist it with a constitution saving throw
I see
Maybe it's worth taking a look over the Basic Rules, or seeing what the Handbooker Helper videos can tell you: #dnd-newcomers message
Alr I looked through both lfp and lfc I'm still confused is there any better way to find people to join?
What's confusing you?
Well how would I join through an app or a discord chat or like...
You message the poster or respond in the thread attached to the post
And there was only one person on there posting
They would then invite you to their Discord server or Virtual Tabletop (VTT) platform.
Oh ok
I'm just trying to find a group

Please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains our LFG channels and how to use them
D&D is a game with many words
Indeed - it's a collaborative storytelling game so words are a must (written or spoken)
But yeah, just go to #looking-for-players and if you see a game you like, message the poster or use the thread attached to the post to chat with them and tell them you're interested.
Also see #looking-for-community for other D&D servers with possible games.
how long does a dnd game last
Depends on the group and the story you want to tell.
An average game session is usually between 2-4 hours.
Some games (called one-shots) only go for a single session.
A single session may last a few hours, but the entire campaign could go on for months
Others can go through repeated sessions for years.
what would be the most common type? because i dont know if i want to commit to a super long one on my first try
I need advice
If you don't want to commit, I'd recommend looking for oneshots
One shots are a good way to try different play styles and group dynamics, too.
what is artificer
Artificer is a class that utilizes spellcasting and infusing magic into items.
Only one of the best classes imo
is pride also a class or is that to do with gay pride
You get to create yiur own magical weapons using what's called infusions
Pride is just a lgbt pride thing
You can also, depending on your artificer specialty, create a suit of armor, eldritch cannon or steel defender
For a good moment this looked like straight up gibberish, I had to not only look twice but thrice
@wooden pike How so? It's a straight forward sentence if a little run on
I'm just not very well introduced to DND, it took me a moment to connect the dots haha
No worries. I am quite tired so my words may not be wording
Real
But in earnest, the creation of magical items and/or weapons is the bread and butter of the artificer
You also have access to certain spell lists as well.
Think of it as the McGyver of the D&D world
Or the Tony Stark
Yes essentially @burnt seal
are there set classes you have to choose from or can you just make one up
Especially if yiu choose the armorer specialty
Is there a set anything or can I make up just anything
There are set classes. The DM may allow you to make one up, but it's not usually recommended for new players
Since it helps to know the rules in order to make something that works
Yiu can create your own class, however there are set classes that you can choose from as well
Creating original content is difficult though
For newer players, stick with the core classes
@burnt seal It is definitely a challenge. I have only attempted once and had very mild success
Same. That's why I stick with creating monsters and items.
There are a bunch of non-core classes called "homebrew" that you can choose from but make sure to check with yiur DM first
Those strength, dexterity, wisdom things, what's that about? Does it operate on a points system?
Those are called ability scores. They affect the likelihood of your rolls succeeding or failing
Those are your ability scores. They are calculated in several ways, the most common being the standard array. Others include point buy and rolled.
You determine the ability scores either by rolling, using a point system, or picking from a standard array of numbers. Once you do that those numbers determine the modifier you apply to rolls
@wooden pike Zem is correct. Once you have yiur ability scores, yiur modifiers are added to the rolls yiu make with the corresponding skills. Also they are used to make saving throws.
i have a question about animals. can any character have a familiar? regardless of class, i mean
Technically yes. Certain creatures can choose to become a character's familiar. Other than that you need to spell find familiar.
Anyone have tips on playing a Kenku Rogue 😅
Only certain classes are allowed familiars. Druid, Wizard and Pact of the Chain Warlock.
What is a familiar
A familiar is the magical animal or spirit that helps out its master
Like a witch's cat
Familiar is an animal that has a bond with the character. The familiar has its own actions as well as stat block.
Technically any spellcaster can get a familiar. See the pseudodragon stat block for example.
@burnt seal that's true, my apologies I forgot about that
No prob.
Also DMs may allow other classes to also have beast/monster companions but very much dependent on the DM and the game they are running.
Also if they are allowing that, probably a good idea to have a discussion about targeting/killing those beast/monster companions.
Never tried it before because I basically viewed it as something that was basically replaced by video games but I decided about a month ago to download a dungeons and dragons game off steam and couldn’t get it to work and then yesterday I saw a video of a woman being interviewed about dnd and she basically makes the guy play it right then and there and I thought it looked kinda fun and then my fyp got flooded with dnd so I decided to try
Hi, im new to dnd and i am interested in getting into it
Yes, it is important to safeguard your familiars just as you would your spellcasters

@fading vigil Yiure in the right place, feel free to ask any questions you may have
im also interested inn getting into an adventure, ive never played it b4 so i need some assistance
What would you like to know
Personally I have just always been into roleplay, like I did theatre as a kid, and before that I would force my parents to watch the plays I performed to them. So it's just my cup of tea
6 months ago it was to confusing, I've been digesting all of the new information very slowly. And 6 years ago I didn't speak English.
I have heard of it from the moment I understood English, but never had the community to start to be really interested.
And I am starting now because I overheard my friends talk about a DnD campaign they were doing.
Or, more importantly, how can the community help you
All races synchronize well with each other. There are historically some conflicts between races but that is more in the lore than in actually campaign settings
So recent updates to the rules via Tasha's Cauldron of Everything means any race/species is good for any class.
As far as some good race/class combos, I recommend Kenku Rogue, Aasimar Paladin, Dwarf Fighter and Warforged Artificer
is a draggon born fighter good?
You can choose any race and someone can help yiu adapt it to your chosen class
Yes I actually play a dragonborn fighter regularly
so im interested in getting into a adventure tonght do you know where i would go to be apart of one
Look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
That said I'll say that D&D games biggest monster is scheduling - generally don't expect to get into a game right away as it takes time to organize and coordinate getting folks togeether to play D&D for 3-4 hours.
I'm not sure of any that are going on currently, yiu would have to find a group that has a set day they play
The #looking-for-players channel is a good place to start
@fading vigil If yiu have any more questions, feel free to ask
ok i will im building a character rn
@tawdry wren how good is a fighter/rougue build?
@fading vigil Depends on what you wanna do. Are you a fighter who is dabbling in secrecy or are yiu a rogue who wants to have a little more weapons training
a rougue with more weapon training
Is dodge a thing in dnd
Ok so start with the base class of rogue and then, depending on your starting level, you can take a few class levels onto fighter
Can you try to dodge an attack
Yes characters have the Dodge action
@subtle phoenix Yes, there is a dodge action
Otherwise a “dodge” can be a way to flavor an enemy missing you due to failing to roll at or above your AC
@fading vigil What level are you starting at?
If I understand this correctly, an attacker first rolls to check if they actually hit their target, then they roll for damage, which won’t be dealt if their target’s armor class is higher
hi
im starting at lvl 2
@subtle phoenix correct
Is there a value the first roll must pass in order for the hit to land
Your AC
So AC affects both accuracy and damage dealt
@fading vigil OK so I recommend, at least for now, take both levels in rogue then once you hit level 3 take a few levels in fighter afterwards
ok, so far i have a dragonborn rougue
Yiur armor class is what your attacker must either meet or beat to actually hit yiu
And if I’m not mistaken, all creatures have a base AC of 10
No it’s 10 + Dexterity modifier
Plus your Dexterity mod
@subtle phoenix Once you determin your ability score for Dexterity, your modifier is added to yiur AC
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

@dreamy dagger I recommend checking the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community pages
Thankies
@dreamy dagger im looking for a group
Fr me too
Please use the LFG channels to find a group - see #find-a-game and read it carefully to learn how to use our LFG channels. But definitely look through games posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and reply to the posters in the threads or message them directly.
And a hit with a value of over 20 is considered a critical hit, which means the first roll that checks for accuracy doesn’t matter, because that hit’s going to land
Is that correct
No, it’s if you roll a 20 on the d20
Right
@subtle phoenix Only a natural 20 on the dice is considered crit
No - a natural roll of 20 on an attack roll without any modifiers/bonuses is a critical hit
I see
For example if you roll a 16 and have +5 to hit, it’s a total of 21 but won’t be a crit
Except for that part are the rest correct
That’s untrue, in the context of an attack roll a natural 20 will always hit by the rules
By the rules a natural 20 on an attack roll automatically hits and is considered a critical hit
@wheat crystal Yiu are correct, disregard my last
A natural 1 on an attack roll is an automatic miss as well.
That’s the opposite of what the last guy said
I think what Hugh was referring to was natural 1s & 20s on non-attack rolls (i.e. skill checks). Which RAW cannot critically succeed or fail
@wheat crystal Yes I was confusing attacks with skill checks
Ah
You can read it yourself: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#Rolling1or20
You have explained it well
@subtle phoenix My apologies I have been awake for over 20 hours
Lol if I didn't have to work I definitely would
Worm
Work lol
Sure, go ahead
The poison damage in dnd is affected by constitution
Normally it is a DC Constitution save
If they damage you over time, you will need to roll for resistance to said poison each time it damages you
No, poison damage is only affected by poison vulnerability, resistance, or immunity
But is this statement true
Constitution may help you succeed on a Constitution save, which effects that inflict the poisoned condition often are
Have you read the relevant section in the basic rules yet?
Nope :3
A saving throw—also called a save—represents an attempt to resist a spell, a trap, a poison, a disease, or a similar threat to the pc
snaps finger yeeees
I would recommend checking out the Basic Rules as @wheat crystal suggested
im done character building
@fading vigil Send the link and I can check it out if yiu want
Is character something everyone’s allowed to see
Those are the some real good starting stats.
Only if you want to share them
Don’t forget to add your starting equipment, though!
i got lucky on the rolls
Lookin good, as spamandtuna said don't forget yiur equip
@smoky adder what would yo usuggest for my starting items
@fading vigil You have an option to choose starting equipment or roll for gold
Your class and your background both have details on starting equipment.
I recommend a rapier as it has the finesse property which allows you to choose Strength or Dexterity for yiur attack and damage rolls
But if you click “Manage Inventory”, then click “Starting Equipment” at the bottom, it’ll walk you through it.
@fading vigil Since you are gonna do fighter and rogue, a finesse weapon will serve you well once you gain levels in fighter
a finesse weapon?
Is starting with 0 stats and 0 gear allowed
A weapon with the "finesse" property. These include scimitar, shorts word, rapier and others
No - D&D expects a level 1 character with stats, etc.
oh
@fading vigil I believe dagger and darts may be finesse weapons as well
Players recieve extra points for certain stats depending on their species
Certain races do get bonuses to certain stats yes
Yiu choose yiur class prior to determining yiur ability scores
Or the opposite, there’s no wrong order.
This way yiu can determine what ability scores yiu want to place where
You don’t roll your ability scores in order
@wheat crystal Very true
No no that’s not what you said here
I’d advise to read the relevant section of the basic rules
You said class before stats
I want to make things slightly more miserable for myself
It doesn’t matter, you can do it any any order since you don’t roll ability scores in order
@subtle phoenix Realistically you can do either way. Whatever suits you best
Then of course class last
Imagine getting no int and you chose caster
(is that what they use)
Only wizards and artificers use INT
There yiu go. If that's how you wanna create your character yiu have that freedom.
I wanted to say that
Oops sorry for ping
Your spellcasting stat is determined by your class, as covered in Chapter 3
@subtle phoenix What class speaks to yiu?
Do you like the ability to fight with any weapon yiu find? Or would you like to cast spells that make yiur enemies tremble in fear? Maybe you wanna harness the powers of the moon or the earth. Or perhaps you would like to let the rage inside you take hold and destroy all in your path.
whats an attunment
I think you spelled it wrong (I don’t know the correct word)
Attunement is the act of bonding with a magical item
Being a DM requires a lot of work. Yiu need to know the rules like the back of your hand and having the ability to create worlds and life with abandon
@fading vigil Certain items such as an Artificers infusions require attunement
I mean being a DM is the most participatory role in the game
And yes it requires a good understanding of the rules
This is very true
I’m actually trying to take inspiration (permanently borrowing features) from dnd so I can try to create my own table top game
Soooo for someone who is new to DnD, what's the best way to get into it? Cause I've never played before and I'm wanting to try it out with people and see if it's fun for me. From all the videos and stories I've heard, it seems like people enjoy playing it once they get into it.
Read the game rules

Is wisdom just the counter to charisma
Wisdom is also used for spellcasting
Wait this thing says wisdom is perception
Anyone know a good online character sheet builder?
Most important for Clerics, Druids, Monks, and Rangers
@clever flame D&D beyond is a good one
Please correct me if I’m wrong
perception uses the wisdom modifier to determine a perception check (technically not always - but that's the default)
Each skill is tied to one of the six abilities. Perception is tied to Wisdom.
Ah I should’ve known falls backwards on a chair
So when you’re asked to make a Wisdom (Perception) check, you roll a d20 and add your Wisdom modifier.
If you’re proficient in Perception, you also add your proficiency bonus.

You sound very smart
Thanks
Are items assigned weights?
@subtle phoenix Yes, every item in D&D has a weight. This includes coins.
Damn
Hey does anyone know where I can go to join a party
Hello everyone. 43 year old newbie here. For full transparency, I've joined after seeing Deborah Ann Woll on Jon Bernthal's podcast. I've always known about DnD. Grew up playing and still love to play rpg video games. Just never gotten into or actually tried DnD. Just here to learn and explore before maybe trying to find a game online to try. Not sure of the options in the small town I live in.
@smoky trout Welcome to the family! If yiu have any questions, feel free to ask. There are several of us here that are willing to help
Um, is now a good time for me to start a new form? I believe it's been 7 days since I made mine
Anyone willing to play a zero session with me
Ooh me, maybe. Do I have to pay or anything?
I'd like to join if that's okay. I actually just got done with my other session and I'd really like to see how others do theirs
1AM EST antics
Central
you guys should take this to DMs, LFG in other channels is generally disallowed
sorry 12AM, either way I’d go to DM or an LFG post for this stuff so you don’t break any rules
.
im not too fond of Roll20 i have difficulty using the character creator < i use DnD beyond mostly
If you're referring to making a new looking for DM post you can.
My recommendations would be to also reply to dungeon masters posting in the #looking-for-players post.
hello,,, im new here & i wanna figure out how to play DnD
help!!
Welcome! Check out the pinned posts as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules!
I recommend making a character as you read through, but don’t worry about memorizing everything. Just be at least familiar with the rules (take your time!), especially regarding character creation, combat, and skill checks
If you have any specific questions about learning the rules this is the channel to ask. If you want feedback on any character you make there’s both #character-discussion and #optimization depending on the nature of what you want
yay thanks super awesome dude
Hi, dose anyone start one shot game? I'd like to join
hey, can anyone teach me the basics on how to play dnd?
@lucid rampart wonna do a one shot? I'm new too
Can someone explain to me what the modifiers do ? like what are the modifiers exactly ? The modifiers in ability scores and Hp, and also what are the Overrides ? ability scores and hp too
Eep, about to launch into my first ever campaign as a Druid. Any bits of advice?
I am creating my first character and Idk what to put in the modifiers and overrides
Your ability score modifiers are worked out from the ability scores themselves.
You don't need to do anything with the overrides, leave them blank.
Okay but wait, so what do I put in my ability scores modifiers if all my ability scores are all 1, and how does the hp modifier work ? Like, does it work in the same way as the ability scores modifiers or is it different ?
hey! Im super super new to dnd rules and terms, what’s a one shot?
A game of only one day
I don’t have a character or anything, so there’s going to be a lot of hassle and me asking questions :’)
Same kinda
Same ;-;
If your ability scores are all 1, that's a -5 modifier for each. When you make a check with one of those and roll the d20, you'd take 5 off the result.
Hit Points are a flat count, a total. They don't get used for checks and don't generate a modifier.
guys
Wonna join?
i have no friends that wanna play dnd
any advice on how to make a character? I don’t know if they’re any specific requirements or restrictions to follow
I have a great video for u
Start off with a race and class, and use the standard array for your ability scores. Learn the process first.

Oh so all my modifiers for ability scores are -5 and when I roll a d20, I put -5 at the result I obtain from the d20, and this rule doesn't apply to the hit points ?
I want to be sure of what I understand
Idk, I am still learning the basics and I am still building my first character
Same with both of us
That's right. Hit Points are separate from ability scores. Are you writing your character by hand, using D&D Beyond or something else?
Using dnd beyond, It's hard to understand for newbie like me x)
I am okay if it's online, but I'll ask many question too x)
D&D Beyond host the free basic rules; if you're using DDB, you've got access to the information
guys my time zone soo tricky
The tools are not intended to replace an understanding of the rules
Okay, I am just searching for some advices here
Number 1 piece of advice; if you have a question about the rules, check the Basic Rules
9 times out of 10 you'll find the answer there
?help
What are you looking for?
Okay so I want to be quick with this... how do I deal with the standard array of selection for the ability scores ? ;-;
Like this option of selection is somewhat purely optional, I mean, I can basically select scores from 8 to 15 pts per score
Standard Array gives you 6 values to distribute how you wish across the 6 stats, not a range you can set each score at
Oooh I see now
Oh uhm I am on dnd beyond and I just noticed that the modifier I was talking about earlier is called "other modifier", what are the purpose of these modifiers while my ability scores already have modifiers ?
Just to be quick
That’s there in case you get a feature that increases your scores outside of an ASI or character creation, typically through certain (very rare) magic items
If you get such an item the app will handle that change for you if you equip it (i.e. Manual of Quickness of Action), but you can manually give a bonus if your DM gives you a homebrew item or feature with a similar effect
Oh I see
Hi everyone! I'm trying to learn how to play the game in hopes that I can become a DM one day (since none of my friends know nothing about the game too).
Are there any beginner-friendly campaign that I can join/spectate here on discord?
Thank you and nice to meet you all!
Damn I just noticed how Op the randomly rolled/manual AS pts were compared to the standard array
I kinda find this weird too
If someone mind to explain details about this pls
Rolling for stats??
Yeah with the dices
4d6 drop the lowest
No? I mean I literally got more pts than standard
Es that can happen but you could also roll lower than standard array/point buy
In strength I got like 18
You rolled 3 6s?
Pro tip don’t roll for stats unless your DM has said you are doing stats like that and most will want to see the rolls happen live
So I can't use the rolled results for my character creation ?
I would like to do this as well, as I am really intrigued by dnd and wanna learn how to play.
Thanks
You would be very lucky to find a DM that accepts rolls they have not seen, stick to point buy
Best to use the standard array. This is just practice. Get to know how it works first.
Or point-buy, sure, that's fine too.
well, you can roll stats for character creation, but usually the DM allows or disallows it, it depends on the table you join. And as Enoki said, if a DM hasn't seen the stat rolls, they are very unlikely to allow the array
To add on part of the reasoning behind this, rolling in front of a DM is an anti-cheating measure. Otherwise, what’s to prevent you from rerolling stats until you get all 18s?
Yeah I see the thing
I mean, after a certain points the stats may get so unbelievable your DM can tell you to reroll, if someone came to me with prerolled stats and they were all around 10s I'd have no issue letting that in
It's the most op option
