What about races that aren't available in the material plane like the ones in the feywild?
You can honestly DM for 2 people.
Hunger like that is moreso a personality trait than a racial thing
I'm scared to run a first game and it sucks because of me and people don't want to play anymore đ if i can just play with my 2 besties it could be great
You can absolutely play with just your besties
Start small.
A lot of people believe that a DM needs to run multi-year campaign.
In reality just start with a single adventure that's meant to be completed in a single session.
When I started DMing, I ran a single adventure module multiple times for different play groups.
As time when on, like with any other skill, I got better at it.
I learned a lot but starting with one small adventure.
So just start small.
@stark leaf To help you get started I highly recommend watching the Youtube series "Running the Game" by Mathew Colville.: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_&si=dyPFCp8aVNgoqg12
If you talk to them beforehand and everyone knows youâre all learning together, itâll be fine.
It doesnât have to be perfect, and probably wonât be â no matter how long youâve been playing.
Yeah
As long as everyone had fun, youâve done it the right way.
The goal is to just have fun, not to run a perfect game especially if it's your first time
Also tofay is my bdaaay

Some good classes for a beginner include fighter, barbarian, and rogue.
Non Arcane users
The ones who can't use magic since there the easiest ones to play
rogue looks interesting from I am looking at
Take a look at these free premade character sheets from dnd beyond to get a good idea at what each class can do: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
thank you!
Hey so I want to make a animated Armor from warforge I have a character sheet that was made by someone else and I wanted help fixing it and finishing it
In my experience the best class for someone new to play is one that sounds the most interesting for them to learn. The martial classes (monk/barb/rogue/fighter) can be simpler, but if youâre interested in playing something else then do that. Being invested in learning something is extremely conducive to actually learning it, regardless of complexity.
You can send it over in #character-discussion !
thank you! that helps. I was reading up on rogue and it kinda cauhgt my eyee
You know I send them from #character-discussion to here right before this convo lmao
The problem was on rolling the stats and other stuff like weight
Lol thatâs fair.

Sure thing, whatâre you getting stuck up on?
May I dm to show you
Sure
Are you part of a campaign yet?
If you're still searching for a group, best to stick to standard array or point buy.
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you donât have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Not in a campaign at all
Then for sure stick with point buy or standard array as DMs tend to prefer being present when stats are rolled.

@slow trench
the is my first time playing DnD. Whats the fastest way to die as rouge
Steal the wrong thing from the wrong person
bit im a chaotic good folk hero swashbuckler
Hmmmm. Same thing, but pretend to be jack sparrow or Robin Hood.
Thatâs when you steal the right thing from the wrong person
Piracy seems fitting
i love commiting piracy (in DnD)
But like, for the greater good. Stopping illegal or unethical trade, freeing people, stuff like that.
my character is def gonna do that
he's gonna be the most cocky person ever
Or even like, you run into a zoo or a circus. Free all the animals.
"i just wanted a closer look at them.... outside the tents...."
but fr though now. whats the best way to play a rouge and not die immediately? i wanna atleast have some fun before dying
Ohhh, I thought you wanted to die quickly. My bad. You can work around your dex modifier to be sneaky or your charisma modifier to be more charming. It would be interesting to see a rogue who simply talked themselves out of things. But it comes with choosing options in game for your character that are CALCULATED risks, rather than just straight up risks. Weigh your options, think of a backup or an escape route. Think, âcould this action lead to a bounty? Immediate death? No serious harm done?â Then decide
Depends on how or why theyâre rogue
Some characters are ârogueâ because they didnât fit into their village. Others are your classic skulk in the shadows and pick pockets for small cash
Rogues just donât fit into everyday society, whether itâs by choice, force, or some other force
At a more abstract level the Rogue as well as any other class are just bags of mechanics that you can flavor to your heartâs content (and DMâs approval)
As for not dying, if youâre a ranged Rogue it shouldnât be too much of an issue. If youâre mainly melee, as Swashes tend to be, both your class and subclass features have great defensive options such as Uncanny Dodge and Evasion.
A good piece of advice for combat is to know when to retreat or at least get out of the way of an enemy. Part of knowing comes from experience, but the most basic assessment can be just comparing how much health you have left to the amount of potential damage you might take before your next turn
how to overthrow the dm (hypothetical)
Are you requesting hypothetical ideas?
I mean easiest way is to learn how to DM yourself and run a game, but I wouldnât advocate for poaching players in most circumstances
Hypothetically, you just choose to do things that arenât really there, commandeer the story and lead the players off on your own thing. In realistic terms, you attempt to make amends with the dm or just find a different session.
And if it was purely in terms of a good jest, just loophole and cheese your way through encounters đ¤ˇđźââď¸
Ask every npc their name and take extensive notes on their personal and/or shopkeep. Then 3 years down the line, pull out that notebook of obscure random scribbles and ask to meet bringen the half-orc tailor and purchase the 3 gold lockets they had for 10 gold a piece

I am new to dnd and I have a question. But itâs a bit long
Sure shoot your question!
I have a character? question. At least I think this applies to character creation. I know now that the homebrew stuff is basically just made up stuff that people make for others to use. But does that apply to everything? Like if I create a character how much can I do with it? Like action wise?
This might not be part of character creation. But what I mean is, like.. in bg3 you have actions you can take based on your character. And some characters have reactions that you can use. Are these based on your characterâs design? And could you create your own reactions and actions to certain situations? And how far can we go with it?
Like if I build a character thatâs like been through some shit, been around the block, jumpy and prone to tears of rage/or fear can actions/reactions be built around that?
Because I was like it would be funny if a character was built like that, and they got into a âfear inducing situationâ and you could like do a roll for reaction or something. Like some people go into fight mode blindly and inadvertently harm others (ie. Pushing someone to get out of harms way, but inadvertently causing the other person to be in harms way) I feel like if that happened if the creature/person thatâs attacking the group had higher intelligence would become confused which in theory would benefit the next person to attack. Conversely, if the initial roll to decide the action/reaction fails then the character would be frozen in fear?
I am so sorry itâs sooo long
So, to boil it down, you are asking what action, bonus actions, and reactions you have as a player?
I have a character question if anyone has an answer, it's a lil weird but like I'm tryna grasp the rules of the game and stuff lol after @paper blade's question is answered
@paper blade is that about right?
I guess Iâm trying to ask if we can make ones? Like Iâm comparing it to like barbarian rage
Sure, but homebrewed items, spells, and features/traits should be brought by your dm to ensure that they are okay with it being used at their table
The rules of the game dictate what character options you have and what you can do with those options. In general there are a handful of common actions any class/character can use, and some that are exclusive. Some features modify such existing options.
Reactions are generally the same. The most customizable reaction is done by taking the Ready action on your turn, which allows you to use your action to designate a trigger and response. You canât necessarily make your own custom reactions (i.e. enter Rage as a reaction), there are certain limits which are detailed in the relevant section in the Free Basic Rules / Playerâs Handbook. What you can customize is choosing to build your character that can mechanically support your narrative concept. Most of the time this can be done fully RAW. Sometimes it may take a little reflavoring (changing narrative descriptions w/o changing mechanics, such as describing a Barbarianâs Rage as a battle trance instead).
You basically actions are attack, dodge, hide, dash, disengage, and consume/utilize
Oh I donât have a dm or anything. I just started to read all the books books. And I saw someone post about a horror campaign and it got me thinking
Your idea of a âfearâ option would likely take some homebrew, but I think you can achieve it in a more cooperative way via roleplay instead of through mechanics. Remember D&D is a team game, and a teammate that âfor the lolâ might inadvertently attack their buddies or take themselves out of combat might not be conducive or fun for the table.
Until you have a dm for a character, stick to official book material, or add additional homebrew stuff with the understanding that the dm has the right to deny it if they deem that it doesnât work at their table
Indeed, the free basic rules are available in this channelâs pins as well as #learn-to-play . I would try to think of a concept you would like, and a few aspects of that concept you would want mechanically representation for, then use the official game rules to build a character that accomodates that concept
If you need help, the fine folks within #character-discussion can help with conceptual stuff
Dw too much about it, post a question if/when you want to. The channel doesnât run on a ticket system haha
Fair enough!
Whatâs your question?
We havenât forgot you! Shoot your shot
Alrighty haha I didn't want to message it in the middle of a discussion lol but like I have an OC, and I was wondering if I could get help with translating her into the general world of DND? If that makes sense so like I have multiple questions in one message, I'm sorry, so when it comes to class I was thinking Rogue or Bard, or even both if that's possible, but the problem is her race/species I'm having trouble translating. If that makes sense?
Sorry I'm not too great with words so I'll clarify if needed
Nw, if itâs a character concept question we should move this convo to #character-discussion
Okay, should I just copy paste into that??

Morning peeps
Yo yo yo
This isn't a general chat, please use #non-dnd-topics for non-D&D small talk
hello people! :)
I just recently started getting into playing dnd online and without my irl friends, and am a bit shocked to be frank.
Seems like vast majority of the games being run are paid, and cost quite a lot (most are 20$ a session)
Is this normal for DnD? I thought I would see more people just playing for the sake of playing.
What would you recommend to start playing f2p (if I don't want to DM myself)? :)
Thank you and sorry if it's a dumb question!
The vast majority of games are not paid
Rest assured
where do you find them? I looked at startplaying and roll20
If you compare #looking-for-players and #paid-looking-for-game you'll see the former is much more active than the latter
Well startplaying is a playform designed for paid games, so that'd be your first error if you're not looking for a paid game
A member of the community has put together this amazing guide to finding a game in the form of a google document
thanks a lot for responding and being super helpful!
No worries
My life cleric reached 5th level. His Wisdom modifier is 6. How many 3rd level spells can he have prepared?
He can have 11 spells prepared total, and you can have any mix of spell levels within that
Btw, how is his wisdom modifier +6? Without magic items you can only get to +5
11 spells of sny level
im also curious, how is it 6?
I rolled my own stats
You still shouldnât be able to get that high
the maximum possible is 18 when rolled, +2
thst means a +5 mod
And either way you canât increase normally past 20 or +5 modifier
Nvm its +4
Even if you rolled an 18, got +2 from race, you couldnât put the +2 from level 4 into wisdom
That sounds more normal
I am dumb
yeah that makes sense, 18 is 4
9 spells of any level then
Do cantrips include in this number?
No
You have a seperate number of known cantrips shown on your class table
3 at level 5 for a cleric iirc? Double check tho
And it also excludes the amount of spells I alr have prepared from my domain?
Yup, those are bonus automatically prepared spells
yes, not counting cantrips and domain spells
So youâll have a number of cantrips (4) + 9 spells + the automatic spells from your domain (6 I think at this level?)
4
4 cantrips at level 5
Ah okay
I have a question about a move I made with my level 8 Paladin last weekend. It felt a bit overpowered, and my party wasn't sure if I played it correctly. I made a two-handed swing with my war hammer and used a 2nd level Branding Smite and a 2nd level Divine Smite. Then, I made another two-handed swing with my war hammer, using Divine Smite at 2nd level again. My dice rolls were: 1d10+3, 2d6, 3d8 + 1d10+3, and 3d8. The total damage was around 56. Did I do this correctly?
where i can learn dnd ? i tried baldurs gate 3 to learn dnd but i felt overwhelmed with information
#learn-to-play and check out the pinned messages here in this channel. Also welcome!
As you read and watch videos, feel free to ask specific questions.
its very overwhelming, find a beginner friendly group, id suggest running some one shots and then trying a full length campaign. DND takes a lot of effort and commitment but its honestly hugely rewarding
appreciate it guys , much love
alrighty so, branding smite is only once per turn, se it is a leveled spell so thats one simple error
and did you divine smite on the second swing?
taking away the 3d8 from the second branding smite that looks correct
ok awesome, be sure to let my party know that that boss isnt quite dead
or shouldnt be atleast
No. Branding smite takes your bonus action and so can only be done once per turn
Also, keep in mind that thatâs most of your resources gone right there. It may be high damage in the moment, but across a whole adventuring day itâs not really consistent
I knew that branding smite was a bonus action so i only used it once, i used Divine smite twice
I also leveled up from the encounter so i unlocked my 3rd level slots which provides me with a little more resources
According to what you wrote you used it twice
Divine smite on the 1st attack and branding smite on both
mistyped, they both end with smite and i got a little confused
I used branding once and divine 2x sorry
Alright, then thatâs fine
so that was a completely legal interaction?
Far as I can see
Oh excellent, thankyou sm
But Iâll note a few things regarding the balance of it:
- The damage you rolled was slightly above average, so you were lucky in that regard
- Both attacks landing was somewhat lucky
- Thatâs most of your daily resources
Getting off topic a little bit
i was about to explain but youre correct davyd sorry
Can one play D&D 5e with char lists for D&D one/2024?
The 2024 core rulebooks are D&D 5th edition books
There is guidance in the upcoming 2024 Players Handbook on how to support 2014 character options
what aspect of it are you looking for help with? :)
theres a ton of beginner friendly campaigns, Id personally say try a few one shots with friends to see if you enjoy being the DM. It can be a lot of work and demands a lot of research. for first time DM campaigns id suggest 'Dragon of Icespire Peak' its a pretty modular campaign with a ton of flexibility. but the books help a lot.

Hey yâall, Iâm super new to DND. All of my experience is one campaign that lasted like 3 sessions and never got finished years ago and an embarrassing amount of time playing BG3. Iâve always actually wanted to play DND (well I plan on DMing) but I have no idea where to start. Where can I find a beginner friendly online group to run a campaign with?

If you have the Essentials Kit, you should be okay. I think the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle set does a better job of helping the new DM, whereas Icespire Peak in the Essentials Kit is a little easier for players to just choose quests. But a lot of folks have had success using the Essentials Kit as their first DM experience!
Two resources I'd put on your radar: this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and the first few videos of Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). His thesis is that running the game is easy (or at least easier than it's often made out to be) and fun, and his videos help folks see that for themselves.
Hi guys, i'm a complete DnD newbie and really keen to get into it. i'm a big fan of BG3 but I have no idea where to begin when it comes to playing dnd with others. I've not got any interest in being a DM just a player but there's a lot of things around character building and playing the game itself which i have no clue on. I've built a character using dndbeyond character creator and I know some of the basics from BG3. I guess i almost need a mentor just to hold my hand and get me started. I've used #find-a-game but don't feel anywhere near prepared enough to jump into a game yet
Welcome! Thereâs some good info in #learn-to-play to help you get started, but what specific questions did you have?
thank you for your reply đ it's a few things really, i've created a character but it's level one and i'm not sure if I need to build my levels up from scratch or if i can go into a game as a beginner but at a higher level? Also very confused about all the modifiers etc. Just feel like i'm going to find it hard to learn how to play unless i just start playing but i've found it difficult to find beginner only games
Some games do start at higher levels, but thatâs up to the DM.
Until/unless your DM has told you otherwise, assume you start at level 1.
Each ability score (like your Strength score) has an ability score modifier (i.e. your Strength modifier).
The value of your modifier depends entirely on your score.
This table shows the modifier for each possible score:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Modifiers are most commonly used as bonuses (or penalties) when you roll the dice.
Your Strength modifier gets added to attack rolls and damage rolls when you use a melee weapon, for example.
Or when you make a Strength (Athletics) check to perform some feat of strength.
Or when you make a Strength saving throw to muscle your way out of trouble.
If your Strength score is 16 or 17, for example, then your Strength modifier is +3, and in all those cases youâd add +3 to the roll.
As for finding beginner games, finding a game can be hard no matter your experience level, Iâm afraid.
But in my experience, a lot of games are still welcoming for beginners even if theyâre not explicitly advertised that way.
Hello I am new here
So if you see one youâre interested in, it never hurts to ask!
that's all really helpful thank you. I noticed on the dndbeyond character creator I was able to customise modifiers etc but would you say it's best to just stick with standard modifiers for now, much like starting at level 1?
My other questions is consitution saving throws, i don't really understand those!
Hi me too đ
I'm on this website called roll 20 haha
Those customization options are intended for things that change your ability scores during play.
A monster might drain your strength, for example, so youâd then adjust your character sheet accordingly.
Iâd leave those all blank for now.
To your other question: Constitution is a measure of your inner health, vitality, and fortitude. A saving throw is rolled to avoid some dangerous fate.
Thus a Constitution saving throw is used to avoid something harmful to your inner health, like poison.
so for example, if I was attacked, do I get the opportunity to roll a saving throw or have I got that completely wrong?
No. unless they use an ability that says you make one, you don't
Ok I think that's where i'm confused about how consitution saving throws are done and used. I don't really understand exactly how they are used in the game eg. who rolls the saving throw
Im new to dnd and i cant figure out how to do the spellcasting sheet for a level 3 sorcerer, ive watched a bunch of yt videos but i dont understand how to fill it in can someone vc or explain it to me
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
Hello everyone
"Attack" in D&D means you were targeted with an attack roll. That means the attacker rolls (not you) and compares it to your AC to determine whether they hit.
Ive finished the top part like the spellsaving dc and the spell attack bonus and the spellcasting ability but nothing else
I dont understand the table for how many spells i have or what spellslots are that stuff
I just wanna know what number goes in what box
But if an assassin hits you with a poisoned shortsword, you may then need to roll a Constitution saving throw to withstand the poison.
Broadly speaking, though, either the rules or your DM will tell you when to roll a saving throw.
It's not something a player ever chooses to do.
The Sorcerer Table shows both how many spells you have, and how many spell slots.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/6-sorcerer#TheSorcererTable
If you're a level 3 sorcerer, you'd just look at the third line there.
Which shows you'd know 4 cantrips and 4 spells of 1st-level or higher (as long as you have spell slots for that level).
Yh i know anout the table but the dm tried to explain it to me but i just dont understand
Okay so
Do i get the spell slots from level 1 and 2
You'd also have four 1st-level spell slots, and two 2nd-level ones.
Do they stack
No. Each row shows your cumulative total.
Ooh okay
So compared to level 2, you'd have gained one additional spell, one additional 1st-level spell slot, and two brand-new 2nd-level slots.
thank you, you've been really helpful
So on the sheet the for the spell level 1 i put down 4 in the slots total box?
Ive seen example spell sheets and they had written down like a 6 spells even though its only 4 for level 1 spells
Without seeing those sheets, I couldn't tell you how they got to six. They might have a subclass or some other rule that's giving them additional spells.
But yeah, you'll want to write down four 1st-level slots.
Okay so under the level one section i write down 4 spells
And then 2 spells in the level 2 section
Okay cool
Of those four, at least two have to be 1st-level spells.
The number of spell slots won't always match the number of spells, though.
So do i have to decide the distribution of spells now or can i take away one level 2 and add another level 1?
Like mid game
Sorcerers can trade one of their known spells any time they level up.
A level 2 sorcerer knows three 1st-level spells.
So when you level up to 3, you learn one new spell that can be level 1 or 2.
And you can trade one of your existing spells for another, which could be a 2nd-level spell if you choose.
Why trade wouldnt i learn another spell or does my know spells stay the same no matter how much i level up
Oooh
I get it
(this complication is why it's much easier to start at level 1, traditionally)
So a level three sorcerer can have either:
- Four 1st-level spells
- Three 1st-level and one 2nd-level spell
- Two 1st-level and two 2nd-level spells
Okay cool
To cast any of those spells, you need a spell slot of the same level or higher.
Why is there also a spellcasting section in the attacks section?
Some spells provide attacks.
Oh theres only 3 boxes in that section can i addmore if needed
Your character sheet is mostly just a reference for you. Add whatever you need to make remembering your character's abilities easier.
Lastly what are sorcery points?
Sorcerers get a certain number of points they can use to enhance their spells through Metamagic or to convert into extra spell slots.
You can find the full details in their Font of Magic and Metamagic features.
How many warlock subclasses are there?
About 10ish I think give or take
- The Archfey
- The Celestial
- The Fathomless
- The Fiend
- The Genie
- The Great Old One
- The Hexblade
- The Undead
- The Undying
What would be the best for a shadowy summoner type who can teleport fairly
That's a good question for #character-discussion
I wanna play with that Alastor guys power
Will do
How many dice sets are needed for dnd
Just 1
Oh okay yh

How do u know whether u roll with advantage or not
Either a feature that you have will tell you to do so, or the DM will.
Like in a wall of text it will say âroll for advanrageâ
No, but something like the faerie fire spell states:
!spell faerie fire
Any attack roll against an affected creature or object has advantage if the attacker can see it, and the affected creature or object can't benefit from being invisible.
it says attacks against affected creatures has advantage
so you roll advantage
Ooh i see thank you

is there a way to be a light domain cleric on dndbeyond without buying it
if your dm has content sharing enabled you should be able to make one
But unfortunately that's the only way. Otherwise, it's a purchased product.
Ok cool
also is there an eladrin race thats not elf (eladrin)?
so i can like choose a season
Eladrin are a type of elf, and you choose the season
Oh
there is eladrin the subrace, and eladrin the separate race
Its not in the details page for it though
the reason theyre separate is cause the not subrace one is updated and newer
So if im Eladrin (Variant) i can choose a season?
Creature Type. You are a Humanoid. You are also considered an elf for any prerequisite or effect that requires you to be an elf.
No
thats only for the separate eladrin
What is dnd
yes

Hi everyone! Relatively new player here looking to get stuck in to support my sonâs interest. Heâll be getting the new PHB and Iâll probably pick up the dungeon masters guide when it releases.
I wondered if we know if any other official Greyhawk material is coming? Like a setup book or adventures?

?tag new abilities
I have some DM advice here: #dnd-newcomers message
You can also search the server using dm advice and/or dm tips as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!
Hi! Me and my friends are trying to play dnd for the first time. We're doing it online through roll20 and are wondering how we can join a game. It looks like u gotta book a time and we're not trynna do all that
There's no booking to use Roll20, so I'm not clear on your problem!
Oh i mightve missed something, then how do we just start a game?
You have to sign up, then someone creates a game. You "enter" that game space, and there you'll have access to various tools. #third-party is the better place for discussing the finer points of various platforms and such, but I wanted to not leave you hanging.
Thanks!

Hi, nice to meet all of you
Hi, Iâve played only a couple games so Iâm not super experienced, but my friends would like me to DM for them and I decided to give it a go. Anyone have any tips? Iâll be running for a party of 3 (1 complete newb, 1 intermediate, and 1 who says theyâre quite experienced, but I donât really believe them lol) I was thinking of doing the Lost Mines of Phandelver
if you're doing lost mines of phandelver watch out for the goblin ambush at the start because level 1 characters are very squish
See a few messages up: #dnd-newcomers message
Lost Mine is a darn good adventure, but you might consider doing something shorter as a way of getting your feet wet first. Just a suggestion!
Like maybe Dragons of Stormwreck Isle? The AI I asked said it was a bit shorter and introduced mechanics slowly
That's an option. There are also a bunch of well-regarded free one-shots that don't have to be completed in one session.
Hi everyone, I am brand new to DND and have been wanting to play forever, after much hassle with friends I just went ahead and looked up basic stuff online to get started and some expereicne on my own. Idrk what to do next, can anyone help?

You have a few options: you could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this.) Play the demo linked above. You could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel. Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one chapter. Watch one video.
Got it. Do you think itâs worth paying for DDB Master to get the map or should I use both it and Roll20?
Personally, I wouldn't sink money in until I tried it and was sure I liked it. That's just me, though.
I meant in terms of playing games, like how to meet people and set up i guess. I have watched a ton on youtube as well.

- Foreshadowing
- Short rest, long rest = 1 hour, 8 hours
- Keep the story moving
- Karma
- The rules are more like guidelines. Bend or break if needed for story smoothness.
This cheat sheet is a good baseline, I think: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet
Eventually you'll come up with your own list!
Awesome :) Thanks for the help
I recommend Dragon of Icespire Peak because the campaign is broken down into individual quests on a quests board.
You start with 3 available quests and when you complete 2, then more quests appear. This helps prepping a game much easier.
helloooo this is my first time playing dnd-
If you don't have one already, get yourself a DM screen. You can get a digital Dungeon master screen that you can print here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/112422-digital-dungeon-master-screen

I used to DM many years ago back during when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth. I'm interested in dipping in again but with zero investment. How realistic would it be to just use the free tools from DND Beyond and Discord it?
Perfectly fine
Pretty realistic, I think.
Thatâs what I do for a current campaign that Iâm a player in and I really enjoy it.
Itâs super doable.
You'd probably also want the basic rules document. Your options for subclasses and stuff would be fairly limited but it'd be 100% doable
The Basic Rules (2014) free as listed on the DND Beyond webpage wouldn't be enough for most players?
That is what they meant I think
Yeah
I think so. Some folks are so eager to play that they don't need access to every option. Plus, there are libraries. Used copies of the PHB aren't terribly expensive. And there's plenty of interesting free homebrew if you want to explore other possibilities.
Just like a sheet with stats and definitions?
Having access to only the free Basic Rules and nothing else would almost but guarantee the game being homebrew. I couldn't advertise it being anything else.
As well as tools for improv.
I did, I just couldnât tell if it was game-specific or general
Is it a good idea to let the players know exactly what campaign theyâre playing or should I try to keep it a secret?
You don't have to tell them everything but you should probably fill them in a bit
It has a bit of both.
It explains actions in combat and what conditions there are in the game.
Niche things such as long and hump rules.
As well as improv resources such as Difficulty challenges, dammage by level & Severity, and the cost of common items.
Does DND Beyond have a free dice roller?
yah it does; if youâre in a campaign and one is looking at their character page itâs in the bottom right. Idk about the DM, but probably
The players and the DM can see the dice rolls for varification?
There are many ways to play D&D and sometimes preferences and interests don't align.
So it is good to set expectations so your players can determine if the campaign you're planning and wanting to run is the same type of campaign they want to participate in.
It can be chosen if theyâre viewable by everyone or just the player and DM
Excellent
Understood đ. I just want to satiate the players as much as possible bcs this is likely the one and only group Iâll have the chance to DM for quite a awhile
If you're playing in person, you can just show your screen.
If you're playing online, rolls can be displayed on a virtual table top so everyone can follow along with what is happening.
Yes but sadly I'm just looking at using the free content, no initial investment.
Roll20 can be free
I recommend checking out this video by Pointy Hat going over things that get overlooked but can contribute to forming successful campaign: https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4
It covers things such as discussing how regularly combat, social, and dungeon encounters should occur every few sessions.
For example, I'm fine if a session doesn't include a combat encounter but prefer that there is at least one combat encounter every two sessions.
Discussing these details can go a long way to making sure everyone has fun at the table.
Wsp
There is a lot of content available with the free SRD,
There are also several VTTs that either have free tier or are just free to use.
What kind of playstyle are people looking for now days? I went to a tabletop game at my local gaming store it was all about strategy, battle maps and zero roleplay.
How could one integrate the idea of a scrappy, more hands on character with some knowledge of the arcane into gameplay? (Would it be better to focus on being a rogue or wizard more?)
Can you clarify what you mean by hands on?
hands on as in literally melee? or what
In the sense of preferring or being better in melee, yeah
eldritch knight fighter or armorer/battleships artificer
Casual, hardcore, roleplay, hack'n'slash are the basic categories I'm guessing.
The campaigns Iâve been a part of like the role play aspect as well as the party interactions. Combat is fun but not the central focus.
You're partway there.
D&D is often described as having three pillars: Combat, Roleplay, and Exploration.

Iâm really new to DND and Iâm looking to start but where do I start
well, as Zero just posted, there's quite a few ways to do so, depends on your own base game knoledge (aka, what you already know or if it's just what dnd stands for, in which case it's fine anyway), checking then the rules, seeing if you are ready to play looking for a game to join or have a game to run
DND Beyond seems to have a fairly extensive LFG mechanism in which to find new players. It gives you a template, i.e., time zone, schedule, roles, game style, it basically covers all the basics.
Oh, thatâs in Greyhawk?
hellooo, been a long time enjoyer of watching D&D but am now trying to dip my toes into playing it and potentially DMing one day
I'd suggest giving a read of the dms handbook and trying a premade module, that way you don't overwhelm yourself with too much to handle, even just a one shot could slowly ease you into the flow of things
Stop by #dm-discussion
Poof
Is itâs allowed to have two classes?
Yes, multiclassing is a very popular method in 5th edition. Just realize that some classes have ability score requirements (like barbarian and 13 strength) and that your total character level maxes out at 20 so you have to be smart about how you split up your levels
If your multiclass involves two of the same ability, then you take the stronger of the two. So if you were a lvl 15 fighter, you would get their improved extra attack, not it along with another classâ extra track
Thx for helping me find out that itâs allowed,I asked because I wanna be a bard and artificer cat guy
The basic rules should have a section on multiclassing. One of the most important things to know before dipping your toes into it is that multiclassing into a certain class requires you to have specific stat minimums. For example if you were to start as a Bard you wouldnât be able to multiclass into Artificer unless you also had an Intelligence stat of 13 or higher
has anyone tried the supernatural D&D?
There arenât any official D&D collabs with Supernatural afaik. Are you referring to 3rd Party / Homebrew content?
yeah, saw something on TikTok where they were making class descriptions for all the different character types and stuff like that. I think I can find a link. they put it all up for free on the internet
Is it okay to post links here? I found one
If you wanted to discuss 3rd party content you should share it in #third-party

Hello :))
thank you
Hi guys im new but ik how things work but I feel I still need more to know about the game how can I learn and how can start playing with others?
My brother and I have been wanting to play DND for a few years (lmao) now, but as the player, I always get stuck in the character creation part. I wish I could just video chat someone so they could tell me how to fill my character sheet. Would love some help! Thanks, you guys!
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the gameâs lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Hereâs a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
what is a good vtt, im thinking of buying foundry as i want to avoid subscription services?
is this a good charachter?
You can start by reading the free basic rules found within this channelâs pins as well as #learn-to-play . I recommend trying to make a practice character while you learn. Once you feel at least familiar with the rules (esp regarding character creation, combat, and skill checks), thereâs many avenues to find a game. Within this server thereâs #find-a-game
If you need help past the basic rules you can check out the Handbooker Helper video series (linked in the pins) which is a great video supplement to the basic rules. Otherwise if you have more specific questions this is mainly the place to ask
Foundry is a great option for a one-time cost. Roll20 also works fairly well as a free option. Generally if youâre going to play as a player your DM should tell you which VTT to use.
As for your character, thereâs a few issues I noticed with it:
- Generally new characters start at level 1, not 3, without DM approval.
- You seem to have given yourself Investigation expertise but I donât see a feature that would have given you that
- How did you generate your stats? Itâs advised to use Standard Array or Point Buy before joining a game, as those are generally more balanced than rolling, and DMs that do use Rolling usually have you roll in front of them as an anti-cheating measure.
- For an Artificer your Int is very low. I would swap your Int and Str scores as Artificerâs primary stat is Int. This isnât as necessary, but I also advise to make your second & third highest scores Con and Wis, respectively.
- Speaking of which, you didnât put in your score modifiers.
- As with #4, your low Int means your spells prepared are incorrect. Unless you change around your stats, you should only have 1 spell prepared outside of your âfreeâ subclass spells.
- You havenât added in nor equipped your class and background equipment.
- Finally, you seem to have included a significant amount of homebrew (unofficial) content, including your subclass, background, and deity. I would stick to official options only as you are new for balance and experienceâs sake, and for the fact that homebrew is super subject to DM approval.
This video is a recent and comprehensive dive into several of the top VTTs
https://youtu.be/ptzr70aVc4M?si=D2owC1AlCUg5RPzS
For further discussion of VTTs, use #third-party (channel for discussing third-party books, services, and tools)
Hello everybody, I'm pretty new to dnd and I've started a campaign as a lvl 8 arcane trickster rogue with two 2nd level spells, shadow blade and invisibility and i can have one more 2nd level wizard spell.
What do you guys recommend i get?
#character-discussion Can provide some some recommendations.
Overall as an arcane tricker, your PC's int score is going to impact your spell choices.
With a low intelligence score you'll want to focus on spells that don't rely on your intelligence modifier to be effective.
Hello, I'm new to D&D, I want to make monster stat blocks are there any rules for that I have to follow?
The only general rule is that it should be balanced to the party and a reasonable encounter.
You don't really want to make something that's immune to all elements for example unless the party has a way to counter it
But even then, it's not really a rule. You can build however you want.
I have 16 INT and a +3 modifier, is that good enough?
There's guidance in the Dungeon Master's Guide on how to do this.
If you're new to D&D, I recommend starting with already made stat blocks as you'll want to build an understand of D&D rules, mechanics, and combat balance, particularly CR.
To make your life easier, you can also reflavor monster statblocks. This is where you keep the mechanics but change the aesthetics.
For example, the lamia statblock has claw attack that deals slashing damage. You can reflavor the lamia as just a samurai, where the claw attacks are sword attacks.
For guidance on making things from scratch, head over to #homebrew
Oh, I see I didn't know is in the Dungeon master's Guide, I look online for the book, thank you for telling me
Reflavoring really is the easiest option, though, especially if you're new to D&D.
Oh! I see I do the reflavouring of the statblocks as mentioned, thank you for the tip đ
Should be okay.
Since you're new to dnd, make your character at level 1 and proceed to level them one level at time until you reach level 8.
This way you can build your understanding of the character in a more digestable way as opposed to diving into level 8 all at once.
Happy to help.
I tend to recommend using stuff that's already been made to make things easier.
Thanks for the suggestion:)!

is it possible to be a noble halfling rogue
How similar is the basic gameplay of actual DND to BG3?
Completely possible. Depends on how you write their backstory but thereâs nothing stopping you from making that character
There is nothing stopping you from making any character (besides ur dm)
the reason i ask is because i know that halflings dont really have a sense of nobility but mainly rely on the guidance of someone older in their community, how would i give my halfling a noble status is they dont believe in nobility
They would probably be the elder in their village
mhmmm youre right ok ok ok, i would have to figure out how to make a young elder
Yes, noble is a background, halfing is a race, and rogue is a class.

If youâre going strictly rules as written based off Faerun (the main DnD 5e adventure book setting), then sure it can be difficult. But if you find a dm with their own world, holdings could very well run entire kingdom

What seems the most fun for you? Have you settled on a class?
I have this new character who is a warlock that I'm excited to try
I like combat but I feel like I miss out on having abilities to succeed in role play scenarios.
Role playability isn't dependent on abilities.
Instead it's dependent on the choices you have the character make and how you approach social encounters.
Is there a particular concern that you have?
no its more of how I want to play. I know it's mostly how you approach social encounters but some abilities let you put a twist or uniqueness to them.
Hello everyone, i'm new and i've never played before, where can i find a team ?
go to find game and you can hop from there to looking for players
thank you very much, also, how long does a game last ?
A single session? Anywhere from 2 hours to 8 hours depending on the group and circumstances. A whole campaign, thatâs up to the party. There are game thatâre multiple decades long
Damnn
4-6 hours is average for a session and most campaigns last 4-8 months on average though
Thank you very much for answering!
Games are usually separated into sessions. In my experience the average session is 3-4 hours.
Campaign length is more variable. Some only take a few months, and a rare few do go on for years. Usually itâs 1 session per week at a scheduled time.
If you have various time restrictions, thereâs special types of games available. For example, One-Shots are typically short adventures that last only a single session.
Ohhh i see, i think i'll go for one shots first to try out the game since i'm new here, before embarking on campaigns. Thank you !

Hi there. Check out the D&D 5e SRD to learn the basic rules and classes. Then check out #find-a-game to...find a game
Ok
There's some good info in #learn-to-play that can help you get started!
But did you have any specific questions?
Not rn but thanks!
Hi, I started playing bg3 last year, that snowballed into me listening to CR and drawing fantasy characters every night. So I know a little about the game, but Iâve never played it. Any tips on getting started?
Start by learning the rules from the SRD or PHB, then start looking for a group.
The best way to learn is to play
I'd recommend the free Basic Rules on D&D Beyond instead:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That's got everything you need to know to get started.
(The SRD isn't really meant for reading as-is.)
Super, thank!
My bad. I mix up the SRD with the basic rules all the time đ
What kind of character did you play in BG3? Did you want to play that again, or try something new?
Iâve played ranger, warlock and monk. Thinking about doing bard next time. I find monk to be the most fun, but I just love drawing art for rangers. So Iâll probably go with that (:
Yes would appreciate
Ello :))
If you've got any question, fire away! That's what the channel's here for!
Welcome!
Iâve played dnd before but Iâve only played the rules my teacher set out for us ( was in dnd club)
Hello thank you!!
Nice! What was your favorite part of the club?
I really liked designing and having everyone describe a silly scene for their action (a Barbie power wheels jeep toy was involved)
And as well as the diversity in their characters
What kind of character did you play?
I played a wood elf Druid named Emily
I just used the first name that came up in my head
Not a bad name. How'd you like playing druid?
I thought it was pretty cool I really liked it
Which circle did you play?
Circle? Hm thatâs a new term unless I forgot it
The subclass
hello i'm totally new to d&d
what type of game styles are there?
Well there's one-shots, short adventures that are meant to only take one session.
Campaigns, which are meant to take multiple sessions to tell the whole story.
Westmarches games, where players in a shared world with multiple GMs choose the adventure they want, and get a DM to run it for them.
for a beginner who has never played before should i do one-shots?
It's a good way to learn!
i just hope i dont annoy the DM if i get chosen to play
One shots are perfect but if you can get into a campaign you definitely should. It's a whole other experience. Maybe ask the dm for an introductory adventure night.
alright! also sorry another question im like a a silly guy so is it okay to like request to play? might be a silly question just i dont know just wanna make sure im not breaking rules or anything
You can usually find local groups who would love to have new people join or just ask a freind who plays
The only rule you might be breaking is this server's rule against talking about your own age.
oh my god i didnr know sorry!
No worries, just edit your post to remove that part.
i didnt see it in the rules so sorry!
Different groups will have different requirements, but there's no general statement. Just be open with your DM when you reach out to them, and be aware of any restrictions that they state in their posts.
ofc ofc!
none of my friends play nor even know about dnd the ones who do know jokingly call me a nerd for liking it
also sorry for so many questions but it says preferred way to play, like i know its self explanitory but would beginner friendly be one or something? i dont know
Not ever group that's beginner friendly well advertise it, but some will openly say that they're beginner friendly.
Just be open with your DM that you're a newbie, and if they're not comfortable with it, then they can let you know!
sometimes dnd veterans dont like noobs but most of us love introducing people to the game
im just worried about annoying others
alright!
so should i look for games? or make a looking for dm post
you could always make a group with friends who might interested in learning how to play but looking for games is a good idea
Both!
hi! are there any dnd mobile game? bc I'm too shy to look for an irl party to play with, but I've always wanted to play dnd
When you say "mobile game" do you just mean playing it online, or are you asking about a video game or something?
Do you mean like Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, or like, "play D&D ttrpg on the phone"
Remember, Dungeons and Dragons is a roleplaying game made for 1 dungeon master and about 4 players. It's not something that you can play by yourself.
both
yesyes ik that
but my problem is playing with ppl irl, I don't mind playing with ppl online
the only dm in my timezone looking for player post expired
Oh no
Not true. Solo dnd is a thing!
I wouldn't restrict yourself to just your timezone, games in other timezones may have times convenient for you
yeah but i also gotta worry about school too
The search can be hard and take time. I'd look at a local store too.
local store?
Do you have a local game store?
i do yeah

Hiya!
Welcome!
Thanks!
Feel free to start with the bot post above.
I know how to do Dnd for the most part, mainly need help with character sheets mabey, but I don't know, what to do mainly đ
Crafting character sheets are key first steps.
Best way to get help is to start with simple yet specific questions.
Ok, how do I go about doing it, I've seen things like: strength, intelligence, and all that, but I'm not 100 percent sure how it works
?tag new abilities
Do you mean how to determine your ability scores?
Have you picked a race, class, and background?
*Start with this video by One Shot Questers. It provides a 3-minute overview of D&D, including character creation: https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
đ¨ so much just happened, I'm light headed lol
How to do the sheet lol
What have you got on your sheet so far? Have you picked a race, class, and background?
You'll need at least a race and class before you do your ability scores.
Wither skeleton
It says in that link
Have you talked to your DM about playing a wither skeleton?
No I'm still new here
A magical family heirloom dagger inherited by the character, with the soul of the dragon companion of her noble family's progenitor.
That got it's magical abilities taken away when it protected the character's uncle from a deadly magic when the uncle was still and adventurer.
So now it's just a dagger that talks, and needs multiple powerful magical items to be reenchanted.
Is this a terrible idea or a neat one?
And I was hoping to find dms
There's no official rules for playing as a with skeleton. (I'm not even sure what that is. đ )
Iâm a dm
So a DM is unlikely to allow it if you haven't discussed it with them first.
Nice
Wanna do a campaign?
Well it would be my first time doing dnd so I don't have a dm
I'd allow it. Sounds neat!
Sure
Ok sweet Iâll add you
That's fine! I just didn't want you to get your heart set on a wither skeleton if it's not guaranteed.
No your fine
What I'd recommend is coming with a few loose character ideas. This skeleton can be one of them.
Then when you do find a DM, you can discuss your options and find the best fit.
Hold lemme get my headphones
Did you have a class picked for this skeleton?
Yea, a barbarian with a fire like longsword
Nice
So if you don't have a DM yet, I'd recommend using either the Standard Array or Point Buy for your ability scores.
?
Standard Array is the easier of the two.
You can assign each of the following numbers to your abilities in whatever order you like: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
As a barbarian, you probably want Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution as your highest scores.
Oooh i understand what you mean, I didn't at first
What the total I can use, like the max amount of number
Iâm back
Ability scores can eventually go as high as 20.
So I have to use 20 points
No. Let's back up. đ
Ok
An ability score measures how powerful you are in each of the six abilities.
@quiet robin
It's listed as a number, from 1 to 20.
The higher the number, the better you are at that ability.
I sent a friend request so I can add to a dnd group I just made
So I can have strength at 20, wisdom at 10 and stuff like that?
If you're using the Standard Array to determine your ability scores, the numbers you can use are: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
Ok, I understand
You can assign each of those numbers to the ability of your choice.
are you able to choose the number or do you have to roll a d20?
There's three official ways to determine your ability scores. Which one you should use is a question you should ask your DM.
Those are described here, if you're interested: #dnd-newcomers message
For a barbarian, though, you might assign those values from the Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) as:
- Str: 15
- Dex: 13
- Con: 14
- Int: 10
- Wis: 12
- Cha: 8
Or you can swap those around for a different combination.
A high Strength increases your accuracy and damage with melee weapons, as well as how much you can lift and carry.
A high Dexterity improves their Armor Class (AC), which makes them harder to hit with attacks. It also helps with ranged weapons.
And a high Constitution increases their hit point maximum, so they can take more hits.
would somone mind helping me come up with some dialogue for a character . ( dm me if yes, im strugling)

so like, i'm creating a character rn, and idk if i can choose the outlander background and still have my skills set to athletics and nature. i read that the skills needed for the outlander are athletics and survival, but i would personally prefer nature over survival. any help?
also it says the outlander can choose ONE language of their choosing, but on the human description it said that you can choose like two. i need help on that one too. i'm a human fighter btw (so original)
There's rules here that you can use to customize your background:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#CustomizingaBackground
Those will let you swap for Athletics and Nature if you prefer.
And it sounds like you'll have a total of three languages: two from being human, plus one from being an outlander.
oh ty sorry I didn't see your msg earlier.
coollll ty

ok, thanks for the info
So how do I start the game?
Pick a module, or a world, or create a world, come up with a campaign idea, get players, and play.
Check out #find-a-game
my human fighter outlander has four skills. is that fine?
I was about to ask the same lol
Lol
That looks correct. 2 skills from fighter, 2 from outlander
sick ok. tysm!
In the #find-a-game channel, how do you join a campaign from there? Itâs so confusing/gen
Iâve got the other channel I need but from there I donât know what Iâm doing
Just scroll through #looking-for-players and find a game that you think might interest you, and see if they have a slot available.
Okay thank you
Is there a way to be your own enchanter/rune smith/imbuer?
To make improved or legendary items
There are rules for crafting magic items.
You might enjoy playing an artificer.
đ I took a peak at it but I need to probably talk it over with the dm a bit more and research the rule book/items I want to make. Thanks
can anyone explain in dm vc in detail how to play dungeons and dragons I have the map and characters ready can;t fully understand how to play
This video by One Shot Questers provides a 3-minute overview of D&D, including character creation: https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
watched it didn't fully got that how's one gonna win
and how it actually works while playing
D&D isn't a competitive game where someone wins.
You can check out the Join the Party Podcast. It is an edited live play that newcomers the basics of dnd :https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
D&D is not a board game, there is no "winning". You sit down with some friends and play the role of characters going on quests and adventures. You roll dice to determine the outcomes of various situations posed to you by the Dungeon Master
alright its some what like a rpg video game
but like how does it ends, maybe one of the player has to defeat the final boss or something
Every story and quest will be different.
It depends on the module you are playing (if any)
It's better to think of D&D as the game engine and the adventure books as the games that run on that engine.
The same goes for campaigns where the DM crafts their own adventure.
Some adventures have a clear start and end. Others go on for many years.
no I didn;;t bought anything yet, just created some characters and a map
that sounds fun ngl
With the right group, it very much is
right now its just me and my brother trying to understand and play a short game so that we can play with large group of friends some other day
what would u suggest would be a cool and understandble approach to figure this out
There are many ways to play D&D, so each campaign can provide a new experience.
Overall I tend to break down campaigns into 3 types:
- Linear Campaigns are great for a more traditional, focused narrative with clear goals.
- Non-Linear Campaigns strike a balance between freedom and structure, providing multiple paths while still guiding the story.
- Sandbox Campaigns are ideal for players who enjoy exploring and creating their own path within a rich, detailed world.
alright so how the game goes for example Iam going with linear campaign for today
and I have a map ready
Start with an adventure designed to be completed in a single session.
Here are dozens of free D&D Adventurers League modules on dnd beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/d-d-adventurers-league/1664-d-d-adventurers-league
One of you needs to be the Dungeon Master
No that I know
but then basically I will make the rules and he will have to overcome it to win
It is possible.
This video by ginniy di goes over duo style of playing where you have one DM and one Player: https://youtu.be/5WH0yEY5uo8
thanks buddy it was really helpful
got to learn more of the basics
btw can I say legend of zelda games are like dungeons and dragons \
You don't need to make your own rules and mechanics, thats what the free basic rules are for: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
It's also what the adventure modules are for.
played loads of them and it feels ikinda same
own rules with imagination sounds more fun though
Its similar in that you go on quests, fight monsters, and (possibly) explore dungeons
At that point, it isn't D&D. It's it's own TTRPG.
wtf is ttrpg
in dnd handbook which I just picked up and started with a few pages they said this so I thought making own rules is also dnd lol
cool so basically dnd is a subset of ttrpg
D&D is its own specific way to play a table top role playing game.
In the same way that Dragon Age , Dark Souls, and Breath of the Wild are all fantasy video games.
They all play very differently.
That's why people play D&D specifically, because it's rules, mechanics, and gameplay are fun to interact with.
cool now I understood the whole thing, thanks for the inputs and taking out your time gonna enter the world of more ttrpgs and specifically dnd đ
Hey never played d&d before, is there anywhere I can play online to dip my toes in the ttrpg waters?
Welcome to the hobby
The most common way people play dnd online is through a virtual table top.

I'm new to DND so can anyone suggest me a good DND game!
I don't know much about DND one my friend is a DND artist so I just asked her about where she gets the idea to draw these amazing characters so she said they are DND characters and after that she suggested me to join this DND server
Can you explain what you mean? D&D is the game, and there are too many members in the server to recommend playing in any specific GM's campaign.
Ohh

Quite a few people do not accept DMs from people they do not know.
So keep note that your mileage will vary. I recommend just talking to people on the server itself to better know the community as a whole.
As you do, you'll bump into the same people quite often.
So every D&D player basically have totally different charcater right!
Not exactly, quite a few people have several characters.
I believe I have 7 so far.
Can I see your charcaters please?
Think of an adventure as a TV series. You the player are the actor, and you can have multiple characters across different adventures/series, just probably not in the same series.
Ohhh
I can do you one better.

For non-dnd discussion best to head to #non-dnd-topics
I've had the same character for 7 years. My DM is a saint.
Actually It's a bit personal I just want to share it with few peeps like 1 or 2 if it's okay for them, actually I just got an Idea to help one of my friend.
If you're interested in the game, the best thing to do is check out your local games store. Most of them will have DMs that organize sessions for new players.
For personal matters I would advise you do not share personal information with random people on the internet due to user safety: #rules message
I don't have games store anywhere nearby, is there basic rule book to read? I know a few stuff from basic pop culture tv shows I watched in my life
Also - just so it's said. For character art comissions - #dnd-advertisements

I do not accept private messages from people I do not know.

I'm 100% using that method next time someone at work asks me about it
Does anyone know of any UK communities? I've joined a couple of communities using #looking-for-community looking for games etc to join as a complete beginner but none are in my timezone đŚ
I wouldn't worry about timezones and instead see if the play time works in your schedule. Also maybe check local game stores in your area - they may have in-person games that could work well for you.
As someone who had DMed for players from around the world, in different time zones, it's more important that people are avaible over being in similar time zones.
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately that's the problem, I work full time so a lot of games in seeing are either during work hours or late night / early hours of the morning đ didn't know if there was anything UK specific. Not that I wouldn't love to play with anyone all over, 100% would if the times worked âşď¸
Well it sounds like you've found the biggest and generally worst monster in D&D - scheduling!
The UK has quite a few D&D and Tabletop conventions.
A quick google search showed me you have the upcoming Tabletop Scotland, York Board Games convention, Geek Out 2.0, and Merrycon 8 that going to start soon.
The biggest BBEG out there
Thank you for taking a look đ
I sent you a private message Samwell Strong
Your best bet is going to be participating in D&D Adventurers League as it offers a drop in style play that gives flexibility to a person's schedule.
There's a Dungeons & Dragons UK Discord server and a Facebook group. There's also r/LFG_Europe and r/DnDUK. Hopefully one of those will pan out.
Thanks appreciate it

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. one more thing, you said that four seems good cause of the fighter class and the outlander background. but what about the race human? it says i can choose one skill of i believe my choosing. wouldnt that make it five? idk if im just confused haha
Some races allow for additional skill proficiency. You're right
i see. thanks, cosmic!
And it says for my starting equipment I need (among other stuff) 10 GP, but on another page it said fighters should start with 5 d4 x 10 GP (which I don't quite know what it means) so should I combine the 10 of the equipment for the outlander and the 10 of the fighter? Sorry if it's a confusing question.
Nah thats all good
You would use EITHER the Wealth method - rolling for starting gold, and buying equpiment with that amount.
OR take the equipment pack listed in your background
You dont get to take both. Whatever method you use will most often be decided upon by your DM
Oh I see, ideally I'd choose the equipment pack tbh
Thanks again cosmic
In my experience that is the more common option, so yeah thats what I'd do
Yeah, I think it would be more convenient for a beginner such as myself.
Yeah for sure, wealth opens up a lot more options but its no good if you're not familiar with the available adventuring equipment
Hello fellow adventurers. i hope everyone is well!
Very dumb question: how do you decide how strong an enemy is like how do you know how much damage itâs going to deal and how much health it has
pretty sure its up to the dm. they ill have that info predefined with the campaign they are running. there are also monster manuals etc
it will vary with number of players
Every monster is custom made? đ
No - there are official D&D monsters with statblocks in books like the Monster Manual
oh no maybe i explained this incorrectly
The statblocks provide the DM with the information to run the monster mechanically in the game
Oh ok
But there can be slightly stronger or weaker ones depending on the DMâs mood?
The DM can adjust things at their table
yes and no. slight variances in hp or damage
So whatâs stopping a DM from making an enemy omnipotent
a 3 player campaign will fight a weaker goblin than a 5 player etc
this would just not be fun. you will never fight a demon lord at level one
Is there a DM police that bans DMs from playing dnd ever again if they do that
It wouldn't be fun. D&D is not a game of DM vs players (usually). It's a collaborative game where DM and players work together to tell a fun story. The DM presents challenges and the players, playing their characters, try and solve them and together they work together to have fun.
Hi guys. I'm brand spanking new to this. I don't even know where to start. What's best place to play online for a n00b
Hi new guy
There is no official DM police. What happens though is players decide they're not having fun and leave. And that leaves the DM with no game to run.
Hey guys! Iâm a dm/ player and just looking for a group to maybe play with

Alright is that an app or website
What is constitution?
Welcome! The free basic rules are available in this channelâs pins as well as in #learn-to-play ! I would recommend at least familiarizing yourself with the rules (you donât have to memorize everything), especially regarding character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also highly recommend creating a character as you go through the rules. After that, try finding a game! In this server thereâs #find-a-game
And dexterity
Both actually! You can simply google DnD beyond and get directed there.
Alright Iâll watch some videos then create a character.
In terms of tomatoesâŚ
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
^this is the simplest, silliest way Iâve seen it explained.
Thanks
but more specifically, constitution would be your characters ability to withstand stuff like poison or alcohol. Dexterity helps them with how nimble or sneaky they can be. So dex would be your base for sleight of hand or stealth.
How do any of those affect the potency of spells
They don't specifically
Dexterity saving throws may help someone avoid the full damage effects of a spell and constitution may help a magic caster keep maintaining concentration on a spell while being attacked.
So do you mean a spell has the same amount of power no matter who casts it
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoreSummary for a breakdown of abilities and what they mean
A spell has as much power as the spell slot that it was cast at
The spell whaaaat
I would go through the basic rules to understand how spells, spell levels, and spell slots work
Is there mp in dnd
No, the closest match would be the variant spell points rule but most DMâs will run the traditional spell slot system
what is a Warforged?
Robots that are made of steel and wood that can feel emotion and pain
so a non biological being?
In a way yes
I have returned with more questions
A mix of both
In terms of stats effect on spells, characters that can cast spells usually have one of their stats as their âspellcasting statâ which usually determines:
- Your saving throw DC (the number enemies need to meet or beat to save against your spells that force a saving throw)
- Your spell attack modifier (the number you add to your spell attack roll if you cast a spell that requires it)
- The number of spells you can prepare at one time
Most casters have either Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as their spellcasting ability.
Constitution also has a special relationship to spells, since it affects your Concentration check. Some spells require concentration (and you can only have one concentration spell up at one time). When youâre concentrating on a spell (usually conc spells have a multiple turn duration), any time you take damage or are subject to certain effects youâll need to make a concentration check to keep concentration on the spell. If you fail the spell immediately ends
so in theory a warforged paladin would work in some way
Any race can be any class.
Anything can work in some way
I noticed that although there is a stat for evading attacks there is no stat for speed
Slight correction, Warforged are living beings and not robots. Theyâre closer to golems but not exactly. They are also biological, the metal is traditionally an outer coating
Its up to you of how its portrayed
Does that mean speed doesnât matter in dnd
thank you for correction
Dexterity would cover âspeedâ though itâs not a 100% analogue
Then what is speed good for
I mean from what I can tell itâs not possible to flee from a battle
I am guessing youâre coming from a video game perspective
Ya
You have a speed for movement, which definitely does matter
You can flee, though itâs dependent on the situation and what the DM/party is prepared for
It's just unrelated to your stats
Ok
For how fast you react to things, Dexterity is the closest analog
Indeed, your movement speed generally comes from your race, but can be modified by certain items, class features, subclass features, feats, etc
So what is movement speed used for
Anyway, as was said, it is possible to run from combat
But it's not a specific stat or ability
Oooo
To move around in combat
Ok
And sometimes chases
If youâre talking about speed as it relates to âmoving firstâ or âgetting more turnsâ thereâs some analogs.
- Moving before enemies would be determined by you rolling higher than them in initiative. Certain features can modify your initiative check, such as your Dexterity modifier.
- Getting more turns isnât exactly how D&D works, but certain features can give you more things to do. Martial classes can make more attacks per attack action when they get Extra Attack. Reactions are special options that you can do outside of your own turn. Fighters get Action Surge, which gives you an additional action on your turn. And many more
this is fantastic haha
dnd characters each have their own stats, then they roll a dice when they engage in combat
I understand that the dices decide how successful the actions the players take are
(at least I think thatâs how it works please correct me if itâs not)
What roles do the stats of the playersâ characters play in this
The stats are going to various things depending on build and context. Most attack rolls use Str or Dex. But I think youâd gain a better understanding by reading the combat section of the basic rules due to the relative complexity
I am trying to start a campaign and Iâm having trouble to put together a story and world, All I know is that I want it to be âparentâ themed, aka each player is a parent or parents, of 1-3 kids, but I donât know where to go from there
You might find better help asking in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building
Thx
So does dex matter when someone tries to conseal themself
Guys Iâm sure this isnât right, but I canât figure out how to post a game in looking for players. I just type and it posts in whatever channel I am in.
I am aware how dumb a question this is, but Iâm getting pretty old
youâre good man try #find-a-game with the /looking-for-players command, if that doesnât work try #moderator-support
Where do I start playing
and what the rules for each class like am I allowed to be a living visible ghost that can phase through walls and control items from far away
okay now I feel like im being cringy and am now gonna leave out of embarrassment
Can anyon e help me quickly make a level 8 hexblade warlock for a one shot my friends are running in a bit? Very new to dnd so I just wanna quickly set up my char sheet rn to a decent build.

The bot post above provides access to the free basic rules and other resources.
It's better to learn the mechanics and rules to build your character over creating something only to then have to force it to work with mechanics.
As for where to start playing, you have a couple options. Are you looking to play online, in person, or a bit both?
Anyone want to explain D&D to me like I have a singular brain cell please
Find a group, Make a character, roleplay them and roll a dice when the DM tells you too
I have a character Idea and have rolled the stats just not sure about how to do max hp
and stuff like that if it was that easy I wouldn't need help
What lvl character and what class and did your DM see the rolls
Lv 1 and yes
assassin
to be perfectly frank it was me and my father Who was dming and doesn't know what he's doing either were winging a oneshot
So a lvl one rogue will have 8 plus con mod at lvl 1
