A passive check is a special kind of ability check that doesn't involve any die rolls. Such a check can represent the average result for a task done repeatedly, such as searching for secret doors over and over again, or can be used when the DM wants to secretly determine whether the characters succeed at something without rolling dice, such as noticing a hidden monster.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#PassiveChecks
Passive Wisdom (Perception)
This is something that the DM uses to check if the characters may sense something without asking the players and thus alerting them. For example, there are some goblins hidden behind some rocks and trees waiting to ambush the PCs. The DM would use the character's Passive Perception to see if they meet or beat the goblins' Stealth check.
I often see it used as "the things you notice in a space when you're not actively searching."
When players knows something that their characters shouldn't/couldn't/wouldn't, this is called meta-knowledge.
When my players are making their passive wisdom thing how will they know what it is do they roll a d20?
They do not roll a Passive Perception check. It's a fixed number the DM uses, not the players.
If the player wants their character to search for something then the DM will ask them to roll a Perception check.
Yes but while making the character sheet how must they know what they’re passive thing is while making the character sheet?
The formula is in the link I posted above.
Passive Perception is 10 + Proficiency Bonus (only if proficient with Perception) + Wisdom modifier
Thx
But the proficiency bonus is only if they have it for their perception skill right?
Yes.
Ok now I understand.
What is the difference between perception and investigation?
Perception: You are using your senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch) to search for something. For example, finding a secret door in a library.
Investigation: You use deductive reasoning to find out how/why something works. For example, discover that one of the books needs to be pulled down to open the secret door you had found with your Perception check.
And insight?
Insight relates to people.
What's their mood?
Are they being truthful?
Your Wisdom (Insight) check decides whether you can determine the true intentions of a creature, such as when searching out a lie or predicting someone’s next move. Doing so involves gleaning clues from body language, speech habits, and changes in mannerisms.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#Insight
Insight isn't a "lie detector" but more of your gut feeling.
Similarly, Persuasion isn't mind control.
So if the character they’re trying to insight into is a master manipulator no matter what they will fail?
The difficulty of any check is determined by the DM, including if something is impossible or not.
Ok thx
If the DC is so high that there's no way the character can meet it, you as the DM might not ask for a roll at all. But yes, you can set the target number at whatever you like. This chart shows the typical range: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#TypicalDifficultyClasses
Some things are impossible regardless of how skilled the PC is and how high the roll the player has. A PC can't persuade a king to give over his crown. NPCs are very unlikely do something that's against their nature just because a PC says otherwise.

Tysm!
So uh, quick question, I’m a bit uhh socially awkward with vc and I was wondering do all dnd campaigns require vc? 😿
That various from table to table. Online games tend to use VC because it's convenient but there are text-based ones called Play-by-Post (it's much slower though)
No, some are strictly text-based (AKA play-by-post). You may find ones that allow some players to use voice and others to use text, but these would not be common.
Thank you both ( ´ ▽ ` )
As a DM I rely on VC because I'm too busy doing other things than constantly looking at the Discord chat.
Can a Paladin have multiple auras active? Like Aura of Hate, Aura of Protection?
Yup! And when it comes to spells with Aura in the name, so long as you adhere to concentration rules, you're good!
Hey guys I'm COMPLETELY new to DnD
I know almost nothing about it, would someone like to play/teach me? It really seems like a fun RP'ing game
Yeah, I know almost nothing about DnD, but I heard good things about the community and game itself

Huh, the bot must be bugged. That's supposed to summon it. Check the pinned messages in this channel and #learn-to-play for a bunch of resources and info on the game.
Unfortunately, too many people join daily to make one-on-one teaching viable, but we can answer specific questions!
Ah, there it is.
So I’m relatively new to dnd. I don’t know any rules, I just am in love with the game and want to know more and eventually own a board of my own. And on Friday I’m gonna DM for a group of people IRL but my players are just as confused as me. Can someone simplify what each stat does? And I can also forward the message to my own server
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
See above!
The links will bring you to the basic rules for each section.
Thank you!
You may or may not have heard this before:
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
It's called a salsa 🍅
What kind of salsa has strawberries in it
"Roll for olive oil"

First thing is welcome to the official D&D server!
Things to know about the server:
- make sure you actually read and understand the rules because, yes, we moderators do enforce them.
- also keep things appropriate (think Saturday morning cartoon) and on-topic.
- Also we don't host D&D games on this server.
A handy tip is to use #channel-guide to see all our many channels and to find the most appropriate channel for specific D&D topics.
alright! thank you!

I was just reading through the dnd5e wiki
Welcome, the bot post above can help you get started.
thanks I'll check that out
That is not an official source for 5e content, just a warning. You should check the free basic rules which can be found in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
Happy to help
As a side note I don’t recommend the wiki.
everybody hating on the wiki lol
idk I used the wiki to create my cleric character and I've used the same character in like 3 different campaigns and it worked well so far lmfao
The dnd5e Wiki is like an art gallery, except anyone can walk in and hang their stuff up on the wall
ohh okay fair enough
I’d stick to the free basic rules (or any official content you own) instead, to ensure you’re using official content only. If it’s the same wiki site I think you’re talking about then I’m pretty sure they’ve hosted errorneous &/or pirated content before.
I made a Dragonborn Paladin that was raised by Dwarves. The egg was stolen in the attempt to make a god tier omellete but also the dwarf was struck with fatherhood instead of breakfast.
I need some help. I’m trying to help my players with their character sheet, but I’m not sure how to determine their skills like their acrobatics and such

Their Acrobatics skill bonus is by default their dexterity modifier + their proficiency bonus (if proficient)
To determine what skills they are proficient in you should refer to the first class feature that outlines their proficiencies, and their background, that will give them an additional two (some races can also grant skill proficiencies)
As to what number to input in each position, you should add the Ability Score related to the skill, plus their Proficiency Bonus if they're proficient.
Some class features may grant 'Expertise' which means their Proficiency Bonus is doubled for that skill
Can someone explain short and long rest to me? What do you regain when you do one?
Long rest, you regain everything. Short rests, you gain hp equal to the hit dice plus one time use of your con modifier. There are other things that regain from short rest as well so id refer to the phb and any other books to figure that out.
Those rules are here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/adventuring#Resting
When making a character sheet how do I figure out my AC
Things that contribute to your AC include the armor you wear, the shield you carry, and your Dexterity modifier.
Not all characters wear armor or carry shields, however.
Without armor or a shield, your character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier
- Basic rules, chapter 1, armor class https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass

I have an idea for a wizard goblin should I do it?
Yes!
#looking-for-players but you may struggle to find a game that quick dnd isn’t a mmo

Hi There! I've decided to finally try out DND after a lot of considerations. I'm currently creating a character and I have a question in regards to the classes.
Yry another new player nice
Ask your questions we will help in any way we can
I'm currently reading all of this class online but It's a bit hard for me to choose based on what I want. So far, my character is a halfing and I sort of want her skills to be based on cooking. Is there a way to add cooking onto the class I pick or is there a specific class that includes it?
sorry for the long wait, It takes me a while to write stuff. XD
The classes and other game options generally pertain to adventuring
It's kind of assumed every adventurer can cook at least well enough to survive, but generally professional cooks don't become adventurers (or don't remain professional cooks while they adventure)
There is a "chef" background, but it's not a free option, you'd have to pay for the book it comes in
Backgrounds represent what you were before you became an adventurer
However, D&D is a game about roleplaying and if you want your character to be good at cooking, that's something you can roleplay. Maybe during long rests you describe how you lovingly make tasty meals for your fellow adventurers, or you're always on the hunt for interesting new herbs and spices, or you talk to locals in new locales about the cuisine of that region
you could be a cleric or paladin and choose the "Create food and Water" spell when you reach the appropriate level
D&D is great because not everything about your character needs to be represented through mechanics, features, and rules
"flavour is free" is a very common expression here
Okay, this is good to know. I'll definitely place cooking into my background then. Thanks a lot! 🙂
Out of curiousity, what class do you recommend beginners?
Fighter is a good one, but honestly any class
whichever one you think sounds the most fun
Because if you find a class fun to play, you'll find it easier to learn what it does
Okay then. I better look through the basic before I decide then. Thanks for the help! 🙂
Broadly speaking classes fall into "martial" classes and "spellcaster" classes (with some overlap)
Very broadly speaking
The martial classes are
- fighter
- monk
- barbarian
- rogue
The spellcaster classes are
- artificer (not free)
- bard
- druid
- sorcerer
- warlock
- wizard
And the "bit of both" classes are
- cleric
- paladin
- ranger
Also several of the above classes have subclasses that let them fit into the other group a little bit
Well this is good to know!
do you typically create your character before finding a group or the other way around? i still have a lot to learn about the actual practicalities of the game admittedly but i wanna know where i can start
Typically you find a group first and then make a character that fits the setting/campaign the DM is running
But you can always make practice characters
ah i see! i understand there's a looking-for-players channel in this server but would most dms help a new player like me get started? how much info should i have under my belt going into it?
Lots of games are newcomer friendly
you should have in mind at least if you want to be melee, ranged, tank, or spellcaster. that will give you an idea of a couple of classes you can choose from for each role and if you choose spellcaster, study the spells list for sure
personally, I like the cleric because they are tanky and use some spells too
Is there any dnd new player friendly games I can join
I played 1 time with a friend of mine and I’ve been tryna get into dnd since then 😂
I know most of the basics
#looking-for-players and browse for newbie friendly games 🙂

never really thought about writing as a strong suit but wonder if itd be a fun

Dunno if ill ever find a place to sit down proper and do it, but maybe!
#dm-discussion is where talk on the finer points of DMing happens. This channel is more about the very basics of the game as a whole.
Hello everyone! New to DnD. Have always wanted to learn more about it and play! I done some reading on playing but have no experience.
Welcome!
Hi. I'm very new to this and has basically have no idea on how to actually play. It looks fun tho I've seen some streamers play
hi, i'm newish too. i've only played in real life about 4 times, but i've loved it so far
Welcome welcome!
#learn-to-play has a bunch of info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
Ok when casting a spell at a mob like a goblin......if it's a spell like thunderclap I have to roll a CON 13 to cast it, does the Goblin use it's Spell DC ????
I'm helping my partner as we are all doing a noobie campaign and I think we have confused ourselves lol
When a spell asks for a saving throw, it's the target that rolls, not the caster.
So in this case, the goblin would roll a CON save compared to your spell save DC.
If their total is less than your DC, they fail and take damage.
- When you force a save, the target rolls a dice against a static number (your spell save DC)
- When you make an attack, you roll a dice against a static number (the enemy's AC)
What if the target doesn't have a DC spell save?
In this case, the target doesn't need one. It's using your spell save DC.
Many spells specify that a target can make a saving throw to avoid some or all of a spell's effects. The spell specifies the ability that the target uses for the save and what happens on a success or failure.
The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus + any special modifiers.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/spellcasting#SavingThrows
What would it be my Spell DC and the Goblins CON save??
The DC to resist one of your spells equals 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus + any special modifiers.
What class and level are you?
That's correct
I'm a lvl 2 bard. We think we have been doing spells wrong as I took out some guards last week very easily with thunder wave n thunderclap
When you cast Thunderclap:
- The target makes a Constitution saving throw (1d20 + 0 for a goblin)
- The target's saving throw is compared to your spell save DC.
- If the saving throw is less than your DC, the target fails and takes damage.
- If the saving throw equals or exceeds your DC, the target succeeds and does not take damage.
When a spell asks for an attack, it's up to you to properly aim that attack -- you're the one who rolls.
When a spell asks for a save, it's up to them to avoid or resist it -- they're the one who rolls.
In the case of Thunderclap, you're radiating a burst of sound that happens no matter what. No aiming required.
So the goblin has to try and just tough it out.
If they can't, the spell's gonna hurt 'em.
Ok I think I'm getting it, what if a monster doesn't have a DC ? But spells
Any monster that can cast saving throw spells will have a spell save DC listed in their statblock.
Ok thank you
An acolyte, for example:
Spellcasting. The acolyte is a 1st-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 12, +4 to hit with spell attacks). The acolyte has following cleric spells prepared:
What if the DC / Savings throw is lower than the Spell requirement of say CON 13?
Where exactly are you seeing CON 13?
On D&D Beyond?
If so, the 13 is your spell save DC.
So when you see CON 13, that means the target needs to roll 13 or higher on a Constitution saving throw.
Oh so if the spell has WIS 10 or STR 8 that's the saving throw number?
Yeah, but I'd be surprised if you're seeing different numbers like that.
Oh I meant in general etc. 😂
Ah, then yeah.
All your bard spells, at least, should show the same number there.
Regardless of which ability the target uses for their saving throw.
So it'll always be 13 on any spells that end up with a stat requirement?
Any that ask for a saving throw will always use your spell save DC.
So if that DC is 13, you should see that same number for all those spells.
The stat there indicates what type of saving throw the target needs to make. They're using their own stats for that, not yours.
If it says CON, they make a CON save. If it says DEX, they make a DEX save.
Thank you
And then no matter what type of save they make, they have to roll equal to the number shown or greater.
So where do I add my Spell Attack and Modifier?
So in this case, a 13 or higher succeeds; a 12 or lower fails.
I'm getting the DC, Saving throw bit now n if it's higher/same / lower n if it's a fail or cast
Your spell attack modifier is used for spells that ask you to make an attack.
Fire bolt, for example:
Make a ranged spell attack against the target.
In this case, you're the one that rolls.
So you roll a d20, add your spell attack modifier, and compare it to the target's armor class (AC).
I'm assuming your spell attack modifier is +5.
The spell modifier for a bard is their CHA modifier.
So I'm assuming you've got +3 CHA.
The spell attack modifier is your spell modifier (+3) plus your proficiency bonus (+2 for a 2nd-level character).
So if you wanted to cast a spell like Fire Bolt against our goblin...
You'd roll a d20 and add your spell attack modifier (+5).
That total gets compared to the goblin's AC (15).
So if you get a 15 or higher, it hits.
Anything less (a 14 or lower) is a miss.
Effectively, you'd need at least a 10 on the die -- about a 50/50 chance of hitting.
(Technically 55/45)
Ok so spell attack gets added to the d20 roll total to see if the spell is successful (Vs the mobs AC)
So now that's 2 out of 3 what about the Modifier?
should also mention im really new to dnd
You still need to select your spells, and it looks like you've got some extra/duplicated equipment.
as in never played a campaign or oneshot
I'd recommend putting your highest score (15 WIS) in CHA instead.
i think i know the basics of TTRPG's since i've played games like fallout (1 and 2)
But it's fine. There's nothing broken there, anyway.
Again, that's just your CHA mod.
It probably won't be used in any spells directly, except to calculate your spell attack modifier and spell save DC.
Oh ok so it's a bit of a stat that I can ignore really? It's mostly DC number and Spell Attack number
You might see the term pop up in a feat or magic item.
Does spell attack number +5 get added to every attack or just direct spells that have no stat save requirement
Any class features (like Bardic Inspiration) that use it will just reference CHA directly.
So the term pops up when something applies to spellcasters using different possible spellcasting abilities.
Any spell attack (not weapon attacks)
There are some spells that include both attack rolls and saving throws, like Ice Knife.
And some that don't use either, like Magic Missile.
Is there a free way to get the other rule books for DnD beyond or would I need to shell out $40x(the number of rule books/guides)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/117550656/gztigw @smoky adder how does my sheet look now
If someone else in your campaign owns the book and Content Sharing is enabled for the campaign, you'd be able to use those books.
Low Constitution may be problematic, high int may not be as useful since your class doesn't have abilities tied to that Ability.
Yeah, I'd flip CON and INT.
To better keep you alive.
And help you maintain concentration on spells.
You can still add more spells, too.
I don't see any change. Still CON +0.
You want CON higher.
I'd make CHA, CON, and DEX your highest, in that order.
(And the rest however you like.)
i have a +2 in all of them
is that good
Much better
For spells, it looks like you've got Acid Splash twice.
Once from your race and once from your class.
You can also pick one more cantrip from your class.
You should have five of those in total.
Spells look good
Still seems like you've got more equipment than usual.
Especially that 145 gp.
Typically you'd have just the starting equipment from your race and background.
removed some stuff but kept the staff and explorer's pack
Well now it seems like you don't have enough equipment. 😅
And still too much gold.
A sorcerer starts with this equipment:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/6-sorcerer#Equipment-9961449
And a haunted one starts with the equipment here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/34-haunted-one
should be all good now i think
Can someone help me choose classes for all my NPC’s?
Over in #dm-discussion we can help you design NPCs!
NPCs don't have classes the way player characters do.
They are categorized as monster type such as Humanoid, Aberration, and more.
While there are many reasons why NPCS and PCs are designed different, a major one is that NPC statblocks are built for single DM can juggle multiple npcs at a given time.
One that sounds fun/interesting to you!
Quick question, Spell Focuses, how do they genrally work, are most Dms happy with characters having them, or does it just depend on the DM and how they want spells to be cast and such
Spell focuses replace the material components of a spell that do not have an associated cost. I've never seen a DM treat them as optional or anything like that, but not all players use them.
Well, it replaces material components that don't have a cost and aren't consumed.
And they do nothing at all for spells without a material component.
They're very common in the game, though.
When I am creating my character how do I know what my max hit points are?
Most spellcasting classes provide both the option to use a focus and the focus itself.
It's gonna depend on your class and constitution modifier.
That depends on your class, CON modifier, and whether the DM lets you roll or uses the average for HP.
At the top of your class, you should see a section for Hit Points, including "Hit Points at 1st Level".
They'll all be the max size for their hit die, plus CON.
(That max size will vary depending on the class.)
A fighter, for example:
Hit Dice: 1d10 per fighter level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + your Constitution modifier
Compared to a wizard:
Hit Dice: 1d6 per wizard level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 6 + your Constitution modifier
But the DM can just give you the average of 12 or just make you roll a d20 right?
For level 1, each class gets their max HP. For levels beyond that, you roll your hit die for that class. So a level 2 fighter would roll a d10 and add their CON bonus, on top of their 10+CON from level 1. A d20 isn't involved.
Waht is CON and where do I get it?
Constitution is one of your ability scores.
If you don't have a DM and you're making a character for practice, the easiest thing to do is use standard array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. Place them wherever you like in your six abilities (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, Charisma).
Ohh constitution
Once you know your score, you know your modifier: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Yeah, you'll see those abbreviations around:
STRength
DEXterity
CONstitution
WISdom
INTelligence
CHArisma
Yeah don’t worry I know what that is now what do I do with my constitution to get my max hit points
What class are you?
Like I’m the DM so I just wanna help my players out with making character sheets but I don’t know Like does it matter?
As mentioned above, their starting HP is going to depend on their class, yes.
So where can I find out what each class does to the HP
Right at the top of their class features, under Hit Points.
Wizard, for example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/8-wizard#ClassFeatures
Where do I find their class features?
Hello? Anybody there, I know I’m bad at the game pls help.
They're all in the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes
Thx but now can their background be anything like can it be teacher or like other stuff
There's a list of backgrounds, also in the Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
But that does include rules for customizing a background as well, so a teacher is theoretically possible.
There are existing backgrounds, but there are also rules for custom backgrounds: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#CustomizingaBackground
I really love how we covered all bases without coordinating!
But so they can say teacher if they like?
You're the DM. You can allow it, or you can say no.
I'd allow it.
I would too. I'm just saying the DM doesn't only need to say yes.
Sounds like just a renamed Sage background.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/11-sage
So everything is up to the DM (me)
If it's not in the rules, yes. But the rules are a shared framework that allows the game to happen. Breaking them should be done rarely and mindfully.
Ultimately, yes, though it's generally expected that a DM is at least attempting to follow the rules.
(Otherwise, why even have rules?)
Yeah
hi all... just bought the starter pack today. and very exited to start
is there any one who is willing to take me by the hand and gide me in the basics

Quick question, what's a good total amount of starting stat points?
Point Buy has 27
But remember, increasing any stat above 13 takes 2 points instead of 1
Ok thank you both!!
Have a great day!
does anyone know where I could find beginner friendly campaigns? I'm relatively new and don't know where to search besides a few discord servers haha
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
You can use our LFG channels to try and find a game - read #find-a-game for more information (and read it carefully)
Also you can look at Roll20, Demiplane, and other onlin TTRPG forums/game finder services to try and find a group/game to join.
Cool, I'll check those out. Thank you!
What do ideals and bonds indicate and affect the game and are they necessary?
Would it be possible for someone to show me what I should be doing before I do a Dnd?
hi im new, where should i go to find out how to build a character?
ohh i see, thank you for the info!
how do people do online campaigns? like lets say I wanna do a campaign but not only do I have limited knowledge on the game, but no one in my town really... plays it (at least not enough people to make a group of 2 or more)
First, read over the rules so you have a general idea of how to play. Then you should find someone looking for players for an online campaign and ask to join up, being transparent about being new to D&D
#learn-to-play is a good place to find resources to learn the rules
#find-a-game is this server's place where games are advertised
Hey all
hey I someone needed a answer to this question, what it takes to be a dm? they think that they dont have what it takes to be a dm and stuff so yeah

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Read the above
kinda worded something wrong 😭
thanks!!
do you have a game ready or are you getting one started?
???
uh no, I was talking to someone about d&d and I suggested that maybe they would like to be a dm since they are good at story telling and stuff
had to ask because I myself wanted to know
I caved in after so long, i will learn dnd
dont worry
still not as big as warhammer
👍
(the lore 💀 )
Welcome new player
@coarse bone any idea that you have. I after a lot of proving have started to dm I love hearing the ideas.
hi! im really new to the game and its been really hard to understand. i’ve created a character, but im not sure if its balanced/what to do next. im really sorry if this is vauge, but ill take any help i can get. dnd seems so interesting, and id love to know more. a friend i met over tumblr has tried to help me, but they’re overworked and i dont want to put stress on them. im so so sorry if this vague, but im not sure how else to put it in words.
@artemis I am look for plays and would welcome some people to help.
ill take any help i can get :-))
Welcome! If you want feedback on your character you can send a link to their sheet in #character-discussion
Is there anything in particular you’re having trouble with?
okay, thank you
Ooo that sound fun
im having trouble with everything, really. the lore and the rules in particular. ive tried reading through dnd beyond but theres so much text that its overwhelming for me and im not sure what to focus on
Reading through the basic rules step by step is a good start. In this channel’s pins there is a link to the Handbooker Helper video supplement for character creation

As for lore, the blurbs D&DBeyond gives are good summaries for the races (as they pertain to the forgotten realms setting). You don’t have to read too too much into it if you find it overwhelming
also im really sorry if i frustrate anybody
No you're fine! Helping answer new to D&D folks questions is why this channel exists.

im watching through the handbook helper videos right now. watching vids like these help me a lot
no we welcome all that wish to have fun.
yo, new player here and I'm confused about how some of the leveling for warlock works related to pact of the blade. At lvl 5 it says you unlock thirsting blade and a 3rd invocation slot, but does that mean I have to use the new slot to get thirsting blade?
I'm confused because in bg3 you get new perk at lvl 5 called deepened pact or something, which basically gives you extra attack for free like you do for barbs, fighters and other melee classes without having to use up the invocation slot for it
ig my question would be if this "deepened pact" is a thing in 5e or just something bg3 made up
Baldurs Gate 3 is a video game and though based on D&D 5e, it took liberties to best fit video game sensibilities and gameplay
so I have to expend the invocation slot to get thirsting blade then?
Let me double check
tyty
Deepened pact was a BG3 thing (I presume, since it's not in the books). You don't get Thirsting Blade without taking the invocation as one of your options
There might be a subclass thing I'm forgetting about, but that wouldn't be at level 5
Yeah I'm not finding it - so I suspect this is just a BG3 thing
You do have to be level 5 to take Thirsting Blade, but you don't get it for free
hmm alright, ty for checking
yee, thought I might've been missing something since most other melee classes seem to get an extra attack for free is all
but it's a fair trade
Ah thirsting blade is an invocation you can take that does allow you to attack twice with your pact weapon
Warlocks aren't exactly half casters
So they don't follow the same rules
If there's a subclass thing, it'd be Hexblade similar to Sword Bards
I'm doing hexblade and it doesn't seem to be
just wanted confirmation on weather or not I was missing something lol

I've played DnD a little but I've decided to start my own campaign. Can anyone give me a small crash course on DMing and writing campaigns?
im brand new and would like some guidance
Hi! I'm new. I am a physics enthusiast, so I would really love to play a Goblin Artificer!
sure
Hi there - just a few posts above yours are some links to help people get started
the chat here can help you if you have any questions as you go along. It always helps to take a look at the Basic Rules (also linked in that post)
thx last thing i want is to not get it before id try and start ;}
No worries and no rush. Learning takes time and there can be a lot. No one will expect you to know every single rule because most people don't have it all memorized.
That's why we reference our books or online copies 🙂
there a dm i can vc to qk
i wouldnt wanna ruin it for others any experts?@, hate to shrug but shrug
shrug
It's 7.30 in the UK, 8.30 in Western Europe, and between 23.30 and 2.30 over in America. Most people are likely to be asleep or preparing for work.
You can try posting your questions in chat and someone may be able to answer them there
my bad ur right

true, its 1:30 rn
anyone want to hop in a call to answer some queastions i have?
ahh understandable, i just have a lot of questions haha

hi
Is there a way for someone without a phone to verify?
i am really excited
so, im a player who's really keen to getting into dnd
and i've actually done a ton of planning
i've done some practice games where i improv as a dm with 2 of the players
i have a dm
and a co-writer who'll write the story with the dm
how's this for a first campaign?
any tips anyone would like to give
Check with the fine folks in #dm-discussion - thats where you can talk shop with fellow DMs
i'm not a dm, im a player
Sorry - I misread!
it's ok
does anyone have a guide to gold / currency for the dm
That would be a good question for #dm-discussion
btw i got a co-writer cuz i cannot trust my buddy to do some writing
only for live gameplay
I wouldn't worry too much about writing per se - D&D is a game, not a "write a fantasy book" 😉
i mean, just like the storyline of the game
stuff we'll interact with, their description
etc
For players I'd focus on:
- learning how a character sheet works
- learning how your character features work
- the core game mechanics for attack rolls, skill checks, saving throws, and damage
Players don't really need to worry too much about the storyline - that's more DM territory
tbh i kind of want to be like a half-dm making sure everything is right
things are on point, and have a smooth gameplay
while NOT spoiling the game for myself (cuz that's likely to happen if i do too much)
Again players are more like actors on a stage that collaborate with the DM (the stage manager) to work together to tell a fun story together
mhm
Players typically don't write much of the story - that's more the DMs job
but do you think this amount of preperation is good for a first session
i mean
first ever campaign
Potentially? You have a DM, you have a group. That's good.
Make sure to discuss expectations and boundaries (what players are allowed to say and do and what topics are allowed/not allowed at the table)
well, all of us know each other. this is just a mishmash 2 different grades from a middle school/highschool playing together
(highschool like, grade 7 to 12)
so i think the boundaries are quite wide
we're just a bunch of kids having fun playing a game with dungeons and dragons
can I yap to someone about question for dnd
Sure - but better not cause any harm by having someone do/say things that others find inappropriate or offensive right.
D&D is supposed to be fun - and ideally should be fun for everyone playing together
Go right ahead
all of us in the group are logical, common sensical, human beings
the only thing i'm worrying about, is the game itself, which seems to fine
They might be dumb questions but I saw a rule sheet and I got overstimulated reading most of it, with that out the way so I need a sheet that fits certain dnd games or is it just a sheet for all dnd games?
As a player you will need 1 character for a specific D&D game (many groups won't allow you to take a character from one D&D game and use it in theirs, at least not without prior review/approval by the DM and group to make sure it will fit with their D&D game).
This means you'll need a character sheet to help you remember all the things your character can do and to track things.
So 1 character sheet for 1 D&D game is typical
uh, one more question
my co-writer (who'll basically do most of the writing while the dm just dms)
barely knows anything about the game...
Have them at least give the free basic rules a read through
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

what things should i tell them to learn about
i dont wanna make her read a phb or dmg
like idk, races, classes
If they are also a player have them read up on how to create a character sheet, then the rules for combat and skill checks
she won't play sadly, she'll just write. but she is up for it
They will need to read about their species and class features as well but they only have to focus on what they'll be using
So they aren't playing?
pretty muchhhh
Then in that case they will be a very busy writer if all they're doing is writing down notes or helping the DM craft the campaign story
i also let her listen to the first episode of the dnd podcast i listened to
i'll just let her write the story per session, so she doesn't get overwhelmed when we maybe skipped something or did smth she didnt expect
If she's not playing, and doesn't play, she is not going to be able to write for your game
Writing a campaign requires at minimum an understanding of the game
yes, which is what i'm gonna give her
No, I mean as in having played the game, run it
my actual dm is in charge of the encounters, checks, all that
This sounds like a very convoluted and ineffectual way of doing a campaign
And very much beyond the scope of this channel
damnit, i'm this far i can't go back now
that's never true
Sunk cost fallacy and all that
You wanna run some D&D? Run a pre-made adventure
wait, i let her listen to a dnd podcast
my understanding of the game came quite a bit from the podcast
and i was completely new
That would be barely enough to play
Let alone write an adventure you're not participating in
Again, beyond the scope of this channel
damnit
#dnd-newcomers is for helping newcomers get to grips with the basics of D&D
And the very basics of D&D involve one DM running an adventure from a pre-written source
Writing your own adventure? #dm-discussion is what you want
Someone else with no participation in the game or understanding or experience of it? Uh, I don't think we offer a channel for that
it's an experiment, we'll see how it turns out
best of luck I guess?
thank you, that's what i needed i guess
it's a first campaign, my group and i will learn A LOT going forward
first session starts next friday (no session 0 cuz the time between will be the prep)
😬 Skipping session 0 is rarely ever a wise move IMO
how do session 0s work
(i dont think this is a dm question, just a general one)
Broadly speaking it's about getting everyone on the same page so everyone is going into the campaign with the same expectations
Typically you'll cover things like
- Boundaries and off limit topics
- Conduct expectations
- Safety tools
- Scheduling
- DM'ing style/approach
- Optional/variant rules being used
- Homebrew and house rules being used
- Allowed sources
- Setting information
- Q&A about the campaign
mk mk
You can also throw on some character creation and backstory workshopping too
hmmm
random question, but i have one character of mine who is already friends with one other character, is that ok
I do not understand the question
so i have my character, and then i have my friends character
we did some practice roleplay, and the his and my character are basically friends now
but that's before the campaign started
i've only seen campaigns start where the characters dont know each other yet (podcast)
that would be an "ask your DM" question
ah, ok that'd be a session 0 question
Session 0 is a good place to ask questions, but not the only time/place
of course
do you know any forms or smth that has pre-made questions so session 0 won't be a mess
because i feel like session 0 would be a little convoluted
without some sort of guide
Hey guys What's the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer?
Are you asking mechanically or thematically?
One baught the spells, the other went to school,I think that's the difference
You might be thinking of warlock, rather than sorcerer and warlocks don't "buy" their spells
They get them from a powerful patron, either through cunning, bargaining, or subterfuge
...damn,I am still new to the whole dnd thing, and I thought that a sorcerer was mostly a spoiled rich kid like
They don't literally (or really even figuratively) buy them
Fair enough
they buy someone to do the spells for them
mechanically
lol
Mechanically I would just read the basic rules to see the difference. In general Wizards get access to more spells and can prepare more spells at one time. Sorcerers get much more limited spells but can modify them through metamagic
Wizards:
- use intelligence to cast spells
- can get new spells either by levelling up or finding them (scrolls, spellbooks etc)
- they "learn" their spells by writing them in their spellbook
- each day they prepare a number of spells from their spellbook
Sorcerers
- use charisma to cast spells
- get new spells when they level up
- they learn a fixed list of spells
- can modify their spells as they cast them using "metamagic"
Thanks!
Huh...didn't know that
Alr,so...
what's the best place to have a call for dnd
like platform
i heard google meet is good
That, zoom, or maybe use a discord group call lol
can't use discord tbh, so either zoom or google meet
(i only use discord for stuff like this, info when i need it)
This is dnd,correct?
Anything can happen, as long as you roll good, and if the GM allows it,correct?
Not really, you’re still bound by the rules of the game
You can attempt things sure, but rolling well doesn’t automatically mean success
Well,as long as it also sticks to the rules of the game
I mean,if its bound to fail, then it would make sense,I can agree
But like, here is what I always wanted to do
Yeah, a common example is trying to convince a King to abdicate his throne to you. No matter how high you get on a persuasion roll, it’s not gonna happen. A high roll might, say, have him let you wear his crown for a bit as a light joke.
Kobold rogue, last of her tribe, seeking revenge
She uses a dagger with a 10ft rope,and throws the dagger,and then,using it,jumps on the opponent
Anybody want to start a new campaign, I just joined this server to get back into D&D
Check #find-a-game
I mena, that make total sense,I mean in like classic combat or exploration type shit
This feels like a flavor choice since there’s no direct mechanical representation of that in 5e.
You could throw your dagger then move up to an opponent and flavor that action as sticking them with the equivalent of a rope dart. If you wanted to “jump” on your opponent that could be represented as a grapple check.
I mean,yeah?
Since they have a dagger with a rope on them,so it makes sense that it's a grapple
Then again,I could pull them,but as a kobold,that seems a bit...hard to pull off
Pulling them would be a homebrew bit, since you want to add a mechanic where your creation can stick into an opponent and link the two of you via the rope part
Hm...then fair enough, else it could be like dagger that can attack from afar, like 10/15 ft?
Like a whip,if you can see it in a way?
As a kobold PC your stats (and sometimes size category) are going to determine how good you are at whatever check contest your DM may make up for that, instead of any narrative biology of your species. Assuming your Kobold has high strength (and athletics proficiency) you should be able to succeed on a good amount of grapple checks
And yeah a whip is a great way to flavor a dagger on a rope!
hey, it could be messy again, but i have an idea. what if she co-dms and joins us in the sessions, intervening whenever needed? sort of like a background dm (possibly also being a va??)
she'd be understanding how the game works as we go on
i know you still think the idea is bad, but this could make it easier
Whips only have a 10ft range though (unless you’re a bugbear in which case it’d be 15)
Hm...
I mean,it's still pretty good,it's like 2 tiles dagger
Else,I kinda want to play stupid builds with the wrong character types
Like orc rogues
Any race can fit any class relatively well, really
Especially since the introduction of Tasha’s rules for customizing ability scores
While making a character sheet can I transfer ability scores like if I got a 20 for strength and a 10 for wisdom can I transfer 5 to the wisdom?
No
Not unless you're using the point buy option, but even then it doesn't work like that
But for example a fighter is good at strength and if it’s low how can it be more cause then classes mean nothing
Generally you don't roll for a specific stat, but you roll all 6 totals and assign them as you want
If a DM is making you roll for specific stats, that's their way of doing things and might result in weird stats for a class
Don't give your fighter low strength
But it’s random you roll dice?
And then assign them where you want
So you assign your best roll to the ability you want to have the highest score
Ok
I’m lost :/

Helloo
Welcome!
Guys, what are characters that can shapeshift into a dragon, and sometimes also partially turn itself into half-dragon, like gaining some draconic traits like scales, claws and horns
Shapeshifting into a dragon is only something that very, very high level spellcasters can do. It's only ever unlocked at level 17 (and the highest level your character can reach is 20!)
That being said, for some more draconic features, there's the Dragonborn race. They're draconic humanoids, and they can even breathe fire!
The Draconic bloodline Sorcerer subclass also has draconic traits
Hello everyone
Hi
Hey,question?
Can we use races of enemies to make our PC?
Like,Kobold,goblin,skeleton?
Some more "monstrous" creatures such as goblins and kobolds do exist as player races, but other creatures like skeletons don't have a comparable race.
However, you can make your own options (homebrew) or describe official options in a different way to make them match your idea
For example, if you want to play a skeleton, you could use warforged, autognome, or reborn
Take note: player races are very different from the monster stat blocks that are used for enemies
Well,I dont mind playing with weaker character?
And it would be somewhat new and fun in a way
I like this one (https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/601awb/session0_topic_checklist_and_guide/) and this one (https://www.patreon.com/posts/39281630). You can find plenty of others via Google, but hopefully those serve as a good baseline!
The DM decides if any unofficial options are allowed and even what official options are!
I have more questions, I’ve been watching some dnd videos does each dnd session have its own sheet for a character?
Each player in a specific D&D game/campaign will have one or more characters. Those characters will typically only play in the specific D&D campaign they were built/designed for.
So in one campaign a player will usually play a single character across the entire campaign (of multiple sessions)
So almost like a loadout for a specific type of “genre” of a session? Sorry if my question is weird
So in one campaign I'm playing in I'm playing my orc fighter - we have played many game sessions in that camapign and I've used that specific character for those games.
So yeah it could be cosndiered a "loadout" I guess
It's more like a character in a play - that character needs to be part of the story throughout
Think of every character as a new save liadout, since you could use the same character for new campaign, or...make new ones for each campaign that you do
OHHH makes so much sense this way
Ty both fr!
So then is it better to make multiple characters or make one before you join a dnd session?
If you need more info tho about it,get a dm (dungeon master) and ask if the character fits
Makes sense
Example, if they play by a certain set of rules, then they can accept your character, or refuse it
Did isn’t like an MMO you make 1 character to fit the DMs story/world if that PC dies you make another,
Ok cause I just started Diablo and I wanna make my character into dnd as corny as that sounds
This is why some dm accept homebrew and some refuses
Also, homebrew is when you make something that doesn't exist in the main rules
Like a kobold playable race
Kobold is a playable race
Oh,alr
So would I be using the dnd beyon app character build thing alot?
That’s one option!
Is there a free way to unlock all the character options for DnD? I don't wanna buy a bazillion books at this time since I'm just starting out
If you don't want to pay for the non-free options, you might be able to get them if someone shares their DDB campaign with you. But that's most likely going to happen if you join a game with a group that has everything
When I was getting started, I borrowed a copy of the PHB from the library.
Also an option :)
I admit, I misread DnD as DDB so assumed they were talking only about the latter 😅
Asking to join campaigns solely for the content sharing is against server rules
But if you find yourself friends/a group with the paid subscription for content sharing, it may happen
Each of the D&D Beyond campaigns can have up to 12 participants (13 counting the DM).
Honestly, when I run AL games, I expect people to sort out their characters themselves
I'll loan someone a book if they happen to be at my table
But I've never bought anything on DDB and even if I did, I'd have to know you well to share it
Aw darn so I guess the town-building idea won't work unless you track out of app then 🤔
But maybe I'm describing AL?ive never played that but is that similar to what I was describing
Adventurer's League is organized play, so it's more one-shots. You might be thinking of more WestMarches style
But either way, there are no massive campaign sharing things you can join
Dang I thought it would be a fun idea to have a bunch of people concurrent campaigns in the same realm and like you can have a bounty placed on a particularly evil party and try to PvP them for money but you'd need to have the DMs agree or something like fighters contest just for fun haha
That's more of a WestMarches style game, where multiple DMs are running in the same world
But that type of game be run regardless of whether or not you have access to character options
Oh I thought you needed extra content to play these things. Is it just limiting your own personal options? Like... If you're a sheltered small town adventurer (you have no knowledge) vs a well travelled person who would know everything of far off places (has books)
I guess it's more important for the DM to have it?
The world is usually built by the DM. If they're running an official adventure, they would need to have that book
But there's no reason the players would need anything like that
Oh ok thanks!
Tell me again how do I figure out my max hit points when making a character?
Hello?
At level 1 you have max hit points. So a level 1 fighter has 10 hp + Con modifier.
After level 1 you either roll for your hp or use the average (of your Hit Dice).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#ClassFeaturesandHitDice
Please be patient when posting questions here in the chat. It's been less than 3 minutes since you asked your original question. Folks here respond because they want to help new players out, not because they're at anyone's beck and call every minute of the day.
😢 sorry.
I’m back from a place thing, I have more questions!, how should
I do my level thing for the sheet? Put it at 10 or max it out
Typically you should set your level at whatever the campaign begins at / DM tells you to. Normally for new campaigns that is level 1.
I apologize, I don't quite understand what you mean. Are you referring to your character level? Most characters start at level 1.
Your DM decides what level the PCs start off in an adventure. An adventure for brand new players would typically be at level 1.
no, but they didn't come w those features. they obtain it after doing a sort of transformation or sum.
I apologize, I don't know exactly what you're referring to. Are you saying your character undergoes a certain transformation into a more draconic form? I don't have any context for the subject of your message.
you could say that. its more of a form that is used mostly during combat, and is not present outside of it
This is more of a #dnd-discussion than a new player question.
ah, my bad
There isn't an official "weredragon" playable character race if that's what you're asking.
im new so im not sure if there is a way i can make this kind of character in DnD
This channel is to help new players learn the rules of D&D.
No, we don't recommend new players to homebrew, especially since it's the DM who decides what is acceptable at their table.
Learn what official playable races there for now and create a character with the stuff from the free Basic Rules.
Don't go crazy on making an OC, just learn how to play the game first.
alr thanks
though if there isn't an official desc for my type of character, ill just go w human and try to get it to be able to shapeshift into the thing I wanted it to look like
Ok I wasn’t sure if it’s like..I was thinking of fallout 😭
What class gets me a great sword
Never mind figured it quick
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
If you're looking for "character who transforms", I would recommend looking at the following player options:
- Barbarian for their rage
- Beast subclass Barbarian in particular for their Form of the Beast transformation
- Undead subclass Warlock
- Rune Knight subclass Fighter
- Shifter race
Unfortunately everything other than the first option listed above is only available for purchase.
So levels up happen during a session?
Depends on the DM, they’ll tell you when to lvl up
Level ups in the sessions I've been i has happened on long rests after we gained enough XP.
Hi people
Welcome!
Level Ups happen by either the Milestone or XP System. You DM will decide which system their game will be using.
- XP Leveling is pretty much the same as it is in most video games. You get XP by killing monsters, completing quests, or any other method deemed appropriate by the DM. Once you get enough XP you progress to the next level.
- Milestone Leveling has level ups happen whenever the DM feels a level up is appropriate, such as after fighting an important boss.
Typically the entire party will level up at the same time
In my long running campaign (it's been going on for the past 2.5 years and will last at least another 2 years) I've divided up the campaign into chapters (plus individual personal side quest adventures), where the PCs will level up at end of each. The pacing is up to my players.
Hello friend say would you be able to tell me how join a campaign
I can certainly help! Have you read the basic rules yet?
I’ve played dnd before

So if the person doesnt have the missing limb for regenerate, do they not get their leg back?
Not really a newcomer question (see #channel-guide to find the most appropriate channel for a topic). If you are speaking about the regenerate spell you do not need the missing limb. But if you have it, it will instantaneously reattach. See the spell details.
noob question a Great-sword does 2d6 right? so couldn't i just roll 1d12 ? nor is ther a beneft od rolling 2 d6's over 1d12 ?
Since the weapon says 2d6, you’d roll 2d6.
The mathematical probabilities are different between the two.
(Generally speaking, the more dice you use, the more likely you are to get a result close to the average.)
so I see FoundryVTT mentioned often. Do you need to buy it to join someones game or is it just the host that needs it?
There's just an one-time license fee of US$50 (typically this would be the DM who licenses and hosts it). The client-side is free via web browser.

Ask them why they are bored is step one - Communication is Key also #dm-discussion
so i dont need to buy it
As a player, no.
wonderful. thanks 😄

Ohh okkk but should I need to buy a physical dnd? Currently I don't have any yet...
No need, the Basic Rules have everything you need to get going.
The Basic Rules are free.
Ohh okkk thanks for the answer 😃 👍
Can I play DND on my phone? I don't have a laptop recently 😔
Do you have access to all spells when homebrewing an Oath spell list?
You can. It might take some fiddling, but as long as you can communicate, you can play.
Ohh okee
That depends on what the DM requires if they're playing online. Certain virtual tabletop (VTT) apps won't work on a phone.
When you’re homebrewing, it works however the homebrew says it works.
Homebrewing isn't something we recommend to new players. Use the spell list that paladins have unless your DM says otherwise.
Which is probably something you should work out with your DM.
What's a VTT use for?
Displaying maps, primarily.
Sorry, but I'm already planning to
Have you discussed it with your DM already?
Again, talk to your DM. This is out of what we can say on this channel (which is to help new players learn the rules of the game).
There is no answer to your question from us. Just your DM.
I'm asking if it's possible to have access to them even if they're paywalled
Ohh
This has nothing to do with what the DM wants
Anything is possible in homebrew, since you’re literally writing the rules yourself.
I should read more about DND cause here In my country its so hard to find someone that play DND 😕
A DM is unlikely to accept any rules you’ve written yourself, especially if you haven’t discussed it with them ahead of time.
You didn't make it clear.
D&D Beyond has only offers for free what's in the free Basic Rules. Everything else is behind a "paywall", so you need access to the books by either buying them or be in a campaign that shares them.
Ah, so in that case: no.
Thank you, that's what I wanted
What class should I use for beginner? Or just pick what I wanted ...
It depends what type of role would you like to play? A warrior? A spellcaster? A hybrid warrior/spellcaster?
Fighters, barbarians, and rogues are pretty straight forward, so they're easier to play for new players.
Depends on what you want to play, most classes are easy to understand
Ohh okee
Spellcasters are a bit tougher to learn because you have to read over and understand what their spells do.
Ohh that's okay ig
The only class I would recommend against is the artificer
Oke👍
All the classes are fun and can be understood by beginners fairly easily
Artificers just have magic item shenanigans that makes them complicated on top of being a spell caster
i've never played dnd before and don't know anyone irl who has. my kids and i were all thinking of giving it a go for our next game night. not really sure where to start.

I recommend dragon of ice spire peak
Should I just play and learn while playing? Cause I need to know how does it really work
The Wild Beyond the Witchlight and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle can be good starter games from official D&D adventure modules.
Or you can do something really simple like "kill the giant rats infesting the tavern" quest and see if folks like it enough to continue.
It's a conversation where you pretend to be someone else, a hero on a fantastic adventure. Sometimes you roll dice. Have a look at the classes in the Basic Rules, see what you think sounds like fun.

How long does find steed last for? Does it reset ever or can I have my horse around indefinitely so long as we're within the 1 mile telepathy range?
What does the spell say?
Casting time and hp seem to be the only factors
Lasts forever until it’s killed or a new steed is summoned I’m pretty sure
But no time limit is described in my DnD beyond description
Ty! And the hp is in a certain manual? The typical free one I think?
Like for war horse or mastiff
Yeah
Ok ty I'll check them out for the specs
Yeah I just checked. It's nutty. Now I just need a campaign that I can get to level 20 so I can test out my character
Most campaigns don't go up to level 20 and even if they do it'll take at least a year.
Don't create a character thinking they'll go up to level 20.
do I have to go out of my way to get ingredients to prepare spells
or how would I get those ingredients
I assume ya, and usually for scavenging and general stores and apothecary
would anyone be able to vc to answer questions
The component pouch handwaves it by assuming it has all the mundane spell material components you need. However, spell material components that have gold value you will need to manually obtain.
Kind of risky to take on VC with strangers on the internet... you could certainly private message someone and see if they'd be up to it but I suspect responses will generally be negative.
Ask your questions here. This is what this channel is for. It's better to have more people to answer your question than one person who may misinform you.
i have no idea how to ask them as its more of I show and someone explain
What is the nature of your question? Does it involve character creation? Ability skill checks? Start on the high level by category.
i want to start my very first campaign as a dm. following a campaign called tournament of tokens
This is more of DMing advice, which you can ask in #dm-discussion.
they would explain the entire thing lol?
No but this channel is to help new players learn the rules of the game.
You're not asking as a DM?
the #dm-discussion channel is the best channel for DM topics - specific beats general
If you're a player asking about specifics of a campaign you're joining then I don't recommend that... (that's possible meta-knowledge).
no im the onw hosting
Basically what their saying is that they don’t know what you are needing help with, if you are just looking for advice when it comes to DMing then I recommend looking in #dm-discussion
If you need help figuring out what you need or how to DM then this is the place to ask

Idk if im able to send links so I won't but when I roll my characters stats like strength how do I add race traits? For example I rolled an 11 for strength and dragonborns have an increase 2 strength so would the number then be 13?
Yes.
hello, I'm going to a renn faire next weekend! I'm excited to dress up! Does anyone here dress up for D&D night?
#dnd-discussion would be a better place to ask. This channel is to help new players learn the rules of the game.
Links are generally allowed as long as they follow the other server rules. Just make sure people can tell what you’re linking to (without having to click it to find out).
where can i find that?
and do they all start at level 0?
The lowest possible starting level is 1.
The digital version is available here (and on sale):
https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/category/SRC-00041
The physical version should be available at any book or game store.
Online retailers like Amazon would surely have it, too.
I am using the character builder on dndbeyond to make my character since its easier than filling out a sheet on my own and im a lil confused on the equipment session
It says choose gold or equipment so im assuming I cant have money and equipment at the same in the beginning
can anyone help with rules to the stormwreck isle starter set
can't have pride and new to dnd???
womp womp (we know discord literally will only show one even if you have both just being silly)
Hi margo
Best way to get into D&D will be found here. I have no vlue what resources are available since I got into D&D via joining a group and learning to play goof out of spite bc my friends (unintentionally) always made my things feel obsolete very fast, and now, 3 years later, I'm one of the people thatdoes big funny number things in slightly practical ways
That's a Discord limitation - it only allows one server flair to be displayed at a time
read her next message 😭
lol
anyways this is one of my roommates and she asked me how people get into D&D and where to start, so I sent her here
Starting equipment includes some starting gold that is dependent on your chosen background.
Backgrounds sometimes include gold.
Ah that’s right.
And sometimes it’s a whole 2gp. 🤪
Good reason to play a monk
I don’t know if this is the right place and I’m sorry if it isn’t, but I’m curious where can I find a DM that supports homebrew? I’ve been playing for roughly a year but took a year or two break so I’m pretty cmon new
#looking-for-players and see if a DM says they entertain players using homebrew
Okay thank you
Hi everybody, I'm comping back to DnD after a real long time without playing it, but I'm getting back to it and I have a session tomorrow in a already existing party. I've always used DnD beyond for my character sheets but I personally didn't buy the extension books and I'll need it. Anyway, I'm looking for a kind soul who could help me creating my character on paper. I have a good idea of where I'm going with my character, but I know nothing about the new stuff. Thanks in advance!
For such short notice, I'd recommend getting a premade character. You can get one from dndbeyond here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Thx for the answer, will I have access to Xenatar or other extensions stuff tho
The premades are built using the free basic rules only. This is to provide the most access for people since in order to access that content you need to own it on dndbeyond.
Though if you're set on filling out a sheet manually, you can use this guide on how to do so: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214106/HandyHow-to-Fill-Out-a-Character-Sheet

Happy to help. Are you already familiar with D&D 5e and only focused on finding a group right now?
yes
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
I'm familiar with it, just struggling to find a group lol
Yo! Completely new to D&D and my only experience was a few mock adventures with friends, does anyone know any good youtube videos to help me get started on genuine "legal" character creation? (Legal being like, actual viable builds)

Hello I'm semi new and am wanting to start in a campaign wherever I can find one
I have a few options listed here: #dnd-newcomers message
And razorwing also created a document for finding a group, which you can find the link to it in my welcome message here: #dnd-newcomers message
Hello all!
Hii! I'm a new player who's done super basic homebrew stuff (Like- 3 spells per character that the DM custom made, spell slots and hp are as bare bones as it gets, etc.) but never actually delved into proper DnD before
I've played games like BG3 and watched a few DnD groups before and I'd LOVE to properly learn the rules so I can bring my characters to life.
Are buying the books required to play the game? Or will I be able to learn without them?
I feel like I understand the basics of character creation, though I dont entirely understand how to fill out the character sheets without DnD beyond. And I gen dont know if I'm just being stupid but Drow as a whole seems to be missing? Am I missunderstanding something when it comes to the race? Would I just use a normal elf on the app? (Im sorry if this sounds stupid quq)
Dndbeyond by default just has the players handbook races on there for free. The players handbook walks you through on filling out a character sheet manually (as does the free basic rules pdf)
fun fact, the first one i already checked out!
thanks anyways
For hombrew related matters #homebrew can help you out.
Just remember hombrew approval is very DM dependent.

Though there are already official ways to use other stats for weapon attacks.
hey how do you use roll20?
That's a question better for #third-party

So basically i make character, roleplay as that character and for example, i need to fight a monster
If i got 1, i run
But if i got 2, i fight
Is that basically it ?
you dont solve a fight in dnd with a single roll
at first every combatant rolls initiative. then everyone takes their turns in order, usually casting spells or attacking until one side is dead/gives up/achieved their goal/runs away
can our characters communicate with the DM?
typically, breaking the 4th wall isnt part of DnD, but your table your rules
Hello happy people. I have never played dnd before but I've taken an interest after playing bg3. Could I use my character in game for a dnd campaign؟
That’s a question you’d have to ask your DM!
But it’s possible in theory.
I think the most common solution would essentially be a “reboot” of the character.
It’s unlikely a DM would let you keep your level, gear, etc.
But effectively a new character with the same name and personality shouldn’t be a problem.

how do most dm's feel about stands (the physical manifestation of the fighting spirit, stands are also from this show called JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, its an anime, i would def reccomend watching it some time)
That depends on the DM. 5e isn’t compatible with a 100% accurate translation of Stand powers into the game. However, the essence of a Stand could be replicated in many ways. I’d recommend the Monk class’s Way of the Astral Self
the main thing i'm thinking of would be something similar to giornos ability
I would start by reading the basic rules, at least through chapter 4. You don’t have to memorize everything, just be familiar with the rules of character creation, combat, and skill checks
That’s an example of a system incompatibility. Giorno’s stand power wouldn’t translate well into 5e, and certainly not in a balanced way. You might find ways to replicate the essence of it, such as casting spells or using abilities that force rerolls (Silvery Barbs, Wish, Portent, Lucky, Halfling Luck) etc
What do you mean by d&d scripts?
is anyone doing oneshots to help new people get into dnd?

How do I share my character?
On your character page on D&DBeyond there should be a button towards the top labeled “Share”
Make sure your character’s viewing settings are set to public, which you can do by going back into the character builder and scrolling to the bottom of the 1st tab/section
Hey everyone. I'm completely new and trying to create a level 1 half elf wizard. Wondering what kinda spells I should be prioritizing to learn?
You’ll start with three cantrips and six 1st-level spells.
I’d recommend a mix of offensive (like Magic Missle), defensive (like Shield), and utility (like Silent Image) spells.
is D&D Beyond a good way to build your first character? I want to make a character prior to joining a campain ( I am planning to look for one after)
and if so, any tips?
D&DBeyond is a great way to build your first character. Just follow the basic rules as you go through each section to ensure you’re setting everything up correctly (as the site has some minor compromises to accommodate character creation into an easy digital format)
Ah ok, thank you, its just there are quite a few drop down menus and it does look a little daunting
And for stat generation I would recommend choosing Standard Array or Point Buy. You can roll if you really want to, but your DM may not use rolling, or want rolls done in front of them as an anti-cheating measure
Have you gone through the basic rules yet?
Uhhhhhhh, i went throught the server rules, i know very little about the rules of dnd, my friend has played a ton and works a ton so I cant really ask them.
Not the server rules, the free basic rules for 5e. They’re linked in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
I would also recommend the linked video series Handbooker Helper, also in the pins. They’re not a replacement for the basic rules but they are a really nifty supplement
ah, then my answer would be not yet, im guessing its a lot of info
It is, but thankfully you can take as long as you like to learn, there’s no pressure to learn quickly
As a player I’d recommend reading through Chapter 4. Don’t worry about memorizing every rule but do familiarize yourself with them, particularly on character creation, combat, and skill checks
oh i know how to skill check system roughly works, its you roll a dice (norm a d20 and add whatever bonus or debuff your charater has in that still ( like you roll a 7 and add +1 from your stength or -1 from dexterity) its the character creation stuff im weakest with

Thanks that does work out as I was thinking of using a more stealth focused character so a rouge is perfect, ty
Anyone can be stealth but those videos will get you used to the dndbeyond interface
ah ok thank you
Hello everyone. Newbie (will run my first 1 shot soon) here. If speaking to NPC player has 2 options: History check and let's say some other check that shall reveal same information, if history check fails, the player can still roll another check or kind of 1 check per player allowed? Or it's DM who decides that?
