Leather would be lighter and weaker while chainmail would be better and heavier/noisy
Ye
Things that contribute to your AC include the armor you wear, the shield you carry, and your Dexterity modifier. Not all characters wear armor or carry shields, however.
Without armor or a shield, your character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier. If your character wears armor, carries a shield, or both, calculate your AC using the rules in the Equipment section.
That's correct.
Your Armor Class (AC) represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle.
Idk where or how to quiz myself
You don't need to quiz yourself.
As a beginner there are generally two questions you just need to ask yourself.
- Do you know how your character works? (Narratively and mechanically)
- Do you know how combat works?
yay i can finally talk :D
spent an hour trying to get my phone number cuz i forgot my password for my phone

well it said i cant post on there until july 8th
That means you've already posted once in the last 7 days before July 8th. That's per server rules.
Wait until the cooldown completes and your old post is removed before posting again.
You can also look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community to find games - just message the poster or use the thread attached to their LFG post to communicate your interest.
hey uh
how do i keep the knowledge from tutorials? i just did 5 tutorial series and i barely remember a thing. (im autistic with adhd too if that helps i guess)
Wow, that's kinda impressive. How exactly do you study usually? What do you do, for example, at school or college that helps you commit information to memory? This is more of a problem of studying than of D&D itself.
imma be honest idk
Let's see... What character(s) did you play?
i usually do wizard, or try to use a custom class like the pale knight
OK, so, first, no custom class for you.
Learn to use the base rules of the game first.
:cri:
Only after you're experienced you get to homebrew stuff.
OK, so, do you know how rolls work?
ish? What's your doubt?
i forgot whether combo dice is 99 and 9 or 9 and 9
huh?
i thought there was combo dice
yk like the ones you use to get like 72 or like 136
❓
OK, so, most of the rolls on the game are made with a d20. Which is the twenty sided die. To which you add any relevant bonuses you might have. And it has to meet or beat a number, called DC. Do you remember learning that?
yeah
Do you remember what are the usual three types of d20 rolls?
ngl no...
There are
• skill checks
• attack rolls
• saving throws
Skill checks are for doing most stuff that isn't related to combat. Whenever you want to do something that is difficult and/or dramatic you'll roll a skill check. You'll find the skill that fits what you're trying to do the better, you'll look into your sheet for what's the bonus you have on that skill, then you'll roll the d20 and add that bonus to your roll.
Following?
yeah
OK, so, remind me. What do you have to compare the result of your skill check to?
you look on the sheet?
You look on your sheet for the bonus, yes. But after rolling, how do you know if you succeed or fail?
So, for a roll to succeed, it must...
be over difficulty class
Or equal.
yup
Meets it, beats it.
OK, so that's the most most basic part of D&D.
Then there's the attack rolls. You do then when you're attacking someone or something. They work like skill checks, but you add a specific bonus to it. And instead of a DC, it must meet the enemy's AC.
Which stands for Armor Class.
Why not just recommend them the basic rules?
You know what, that's better. I'm getting tired anyways.
@old crater https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
oh sorry
No need.
Can someone make a game as dm in dnd beyond?
Can you clarify what you mean by that?
I think yes

What are some tricks to remember aspects of the games?
Aspects?
The million and 1 things
Example, aspects of making a character
You don't need to memorize everything, we all make mistakes
As for everything else, practice
Ooo
You'll get the hang of it eventually
I didn't, I just played (and talked in here) and over time I've learned things
I can't say the names of all subclasses, regularly forget basic rules like concentration, almost never remember to give out inspiration, and I get along just fine
That makes me feel better
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize [...] all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
This advice (which is aimed for DMs but applies to everyone, pretty much) is a great thing for everybody to keep in mind, especially when learning the game.
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there are a few cheat sheets here that give you some of the more common terms and quick guide to what you can do on your turn
No I print them out for my players
Question: should I create a character before or after I join a game. Like, I heard that creating a full character before talking with your DM is a frowned upon action, but I can't help but shake the feeling there has to be at least part of a character already
By all means create a PC but be prepared to change some things like how you generate stats, backstory if it doesn’t fit with the world
Try to come up with concepts for character that can be tailored to a DMs world
Thanks mate, just needed closure on how much PC building is necessary before talking with a DM
And of course, learning as many rules and etiquette as I can
Yo cool crown.
One full set of dice would do. If you need, say, a handful of extra d6 for sneak attack, get them separately. You're not likely to ever need 4d20 for D&D.
Hello! I'm like brand new to dnd and I just have a lot of questions. I'm trying to dm for my friends because we've been wanting to play but none of us know anything. I have the most bare bones basic knowledge of dnd and a very select few mechanics, but otherwise I'm in the dark. I tried learning on my own, tried youtube, and now im sucking it up and asking for help.
What are you using to play dnd?
I'm gonna be using dnd beyond since they're quite far from me. Unless there's a better option 😭 I'm completely up for suggestions and recommendations
Hello
I have never ever played dnd, don’t know what to do
I understand some things
tysm ❤️
I’d just make sure you know how initiative, spell slots, and AC work and the rest is a button your players can click on their sheet
Make sure they equip their stuff from their inventory
Alright! Thank you :DD

Hi everyoneee hru
Welcome. Do you need help learning the basics of D&D?
Well, rn im watching the videos explaining the basics but its also nice to hear from someone else with experiance about it too
Alright check out the bot post above and my own messages below that.
Okay ty
How much of combat and stuff is supposed to be imagination
vs having a lil battlemap
That varies according to the group. I run some combats in the imagination and some with a map. Others may strictly use one or the other.
Battlemap is supposed to be a visual aid, not a hard rule to use or not-use.
General advice is to use a map if you want players to be able to get tactical, and run simpler off-the-cuff combat without a map.
that makes sense
Yeah it depends on the group, I do not like running combat without a battlemap but mileage may vary for other people.
Personally I run a lot of combat with either a very basic sketched-out map, or none at all. My autism brain can't with the visual bedazzlement of elaborate dungeon-tile sets or VTT effects.
Mine is the exact opposite.
Hello everyone, me and two of my friends are trying to figure out how we can setup dnd game for the past hour we make 0 progress plz help
Hey i have never played dnd before and would like some help
and how possible would it be for me to be able to play like online dnd within like 2 hrs
Well, first question that I have is have any of y'all played before?
I do play some dnd games like bg3 pathfinder wotr but never actually played any tabletops before, as for my friends no not at all
Also is there a DND where only be played in text based? (If that's possible tho)
Finding a group within the next couple of hours might be tough, if you've never played before especially. a good first step is finding either a local game store or going into a discord and making a post in a LFG (looking for game) channel 😁
If you desperately want to get a bit of a taste for D&D you can always try playing something like Baldur's gate 3 to get a feel for the rules! *note that some of the rules of BG3 are different then those of 5e as it is a video game
There are various different servers that you can find that exclusively do text based. There are some discord bots that assist with that as well
Oh great I want to play and experience it first on text based before the actual DND to get the grasp of it
So, what I would reccomend. If you all want to play, easiest way to get your foot in the door (after figuring out who is going to be the dungeon master) if you all want to play using 5th edition rules is using DnD beyond. It makes making character sheets very simple for beginners.
If you dont want to come up with an entire campaign, at most stores that sell games or your local game store you can find a pre-made module called Dragon of Ice Spire Peak which is targeted as for beginner DMs and players! Y'all can either run it as a in person, over discord, or over text
would you possibly mind me dming about questions?
Feel free!
tysm for the advice I apreciate it
No problem!
so first question, how do I start? And what's the paper thing for?
what paper thing
Like the paper that indicate some character name or some stats like that
What's that for? I mean Is that required
the character sheet?
Yah that one (sorry hard to explain)
all good im new to all this but reading and trying to understand it ive come along way
yes the character sheet is needed
paper or digital
Oh okay Thank you!
first things first tho gotta figured out your race & class of your character
the hardest part for me is always coming up with a name
xanathars guide to everything have lots of options
I often solve that by having set patterns these days. I have an entire set of characters whose names are just anagrams of their class
Though name generators or the Xanathar's lists can be good for ideas too
the core books help alot
it helps, but there are basic rules that are free
not required
If your playing online then just use basic rules
Okay okay I might buy since I'm new
If your in person gaming the phb becomes worth alot more
might want to hold off until September before you buy the physical PHB though
Do not share pirated content in these chats
The free stuff is definitely enough to get you started
Hello everyone! I'm a new player hoping to find a group. I joined a one-shot before, but I'd like to take my own D&D characters out for playing 🙂
Nice to meet you!
Try #find-a-game
Thanks!
And remember, most dms will have custom worlds that will require you make a character designed for their campaign
no problem!
Ah, I see! That's alright.
A completely new player looking for a group for my first dnd campaign
Best character creator besides dndbeyond?
I’m also new help
Pencil and paper doesn’t count
Welcome to the hobby
What fo you need?
I’m not super new but under 5 years of experience. I’ve played a campaign for a few weeks each year for the past 3 years so it’s not a lot of experience
I’m also still a teen so some things kinda confuse me
Do you have any rulebooks?
No 😦
K
I would start with the Basic Rules
It goes through the simple game mechanics in a way that I find helps beginners
It's available on D&D Beyond (for FREE)
So, im relatively new to D&D, and im trying to play a druid, and i think i read something about needing to prepare stat blocks for wildshapes i will be using, i havent really played with anyone so idk what to exactly do, I know i worded this quite vaguely but any help would be greatly appreciated
It really depends on the dm so I'd find one first before worrying overly much about it. Some like to limit you to specific wildshapes.
That said, preparing the most likely ones would help speed up gameplay.
Thank you so very much!

Oh ok
You don't 'submit' your characters here, you would give your character to your DM. That being said, if you'd like to share your character you're welcome to send a link (with context) in #character-discussion
Ah ok my bad
Yeah I believe this is about finding games but I would love to show off my character, I’m very proud of their commissioned art and would love to see how they could become proper dnd character since ironically a lot of them aren’t typically a dnd playable race
Theirs not a place here from what I know that fits that, exept maybe #character-discussion
If you have a text or linkable item you can probably send it over to #character-discussion or #dnd-arts-and-crafts
If I’m allowed to send images in #character-discussion I can prob go there
You cannot in that channel, a workaround is uploading the image to a trusted content hosting site like imgur or google drive, though an accompanying text description of the character so we can give advice would be helpful
hello everyone, i am not new to DnD but i new to GMing...I and in the process of doing my very first campaign for 4 of my friends and would like some help
What’s your question friend?
where do i even start lol...i am going to be doing the campaign through my discord server and you could say that i am flying blind
Any Concept for the Story? Session 0? Backgrondinfo what you players want to play?
they are first time DND players
I would recommend starting with a pre written module since it’s your first time , maybe a One Shot to dip your toes in! I would personally recommend running Frozen Sick, which is free to read and run on D&D Beyond! It’s a great campaign to sort of dip your toes into DM’ing and a great campaign for new players!
It was my first playing experience and I loved it!
im leaning towards Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
That’s a good one as well!
I run that often for new players
Do you have any specific questions on running a game?
to be honest, i wouldnt even know what to ask right now...im on dnd beyond right now reading
Well im not a fan of preewritten modules, but to be fair, even so i am kinda new to dnd, i have a LOT of experiance as DM in DSA. So maybe for learning reading a module is good advice.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
@echo kelp thank you
My advice would be, start small. Learn about the Players and the System with a small adventure. I for example did a little town having a Problem with bandits as my first Campaign. So for the Party finding them, having their Organisation planned out by me and letting my Party investigate was my first Adventure. Add a spooky but not to dangerous Ruins, some Rumors and maybe a few random encounters, and you are good to go. Party took like 8 Sessions to finish the content and they had fun.
that sounds like a lot of fun
Worked well for me at least. Its also fine to have some things entangled with a later bigger story, but i just advice here to not plan out the whole campaign all the way to lvl20 when you just start. Plan for like three sessions in advance but not more and you should be fine.
in my character sheet what am i supposed to write in bonus to hit in weapon attacks
In #looking-for-players , do i dm the person who’s tagged in the ad?
It depends what the ad is asking an applicant to do.
I’ve been responding in the threads so idk
What does the ad say?
Idk I’m only now realizing that dming was an option
Some posts will say to send a direct message, others ask to fill out a form.
It’s gonna depend on what the poster is asking for.
Again, I wasn’t aware, I thought that it was all discussed in the threads
So do I dm the person who’s tagged in the ad? Even if it doesn’t say so?
Yea, you can. It helps to also answer the thread and mention you sent a direct message.

Hey! I have a question, If I were to be a fairy in DnD how would I do that?
Have access to the official fairy race and choose it!
Gotchu! Thanks!
Sorry to ask again, But do you know how i would do that on DnD beyond?
You'd need either Wild Beyond the Witchlight or Monsters of the Multiverse.
Or someone to share content access to either book.
Ohh! Okay Thanks!
Can a rogue wield a staff?
they can, but it won't work with sneak attack, so it neuters them mechanically
What about daredevil sticks?
what are those?
Look up daredevil’s weapons
Like, half sticks, Billy clubs, night sticks without the thing poking out
a club is probably the closest to that in dnd, which is in the same boat as quarterstaffs
Ah
generally a rogue can use a dagger, rapier, whip, scimitar, shortsword, and any ranged weapon
Yep. weapon proficiencies: Weapons: Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords
- Chapter 3: Classes, Rogue: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClassFeatures9
i specifically listed the ones that will proc sneak attack
There is Swashbuckler subclass. Along with the Sailor and Shipwright backgrounds.
Ah that clarifies the specificity.
Hey guys, I'm having some difficulties understanding the rules. I was checking out the "basic rules" and there were just so many different things to click that it overwhelmed me. So are there specific rules I need to know now? Or rules I can learn on the fly?
the core things are understanding how combat works, and how to read your character sheet
Chapters 7, 9, and 1 mainly
2-6 and 10-11 can mainly be used as references when needed
12-15 is irrelevant as a player
and 8, while nice to read, isn't as important
This reference sheet should help: https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/dnd_turn_ref_2022.pdf
what are some of the most common dnd websites for DMs? I just wanted to make sure i have the best odds to be in a group
If you plan to be the DM you'll have a fairly easy time to find a group.
As for websites. I recommend patreon, specifically for map making creators like Cze Peku.
There is also 2-minute tabletop.
I'm sure the folks over at #dm-discussion can provide more recommendations.
Theirs a fairy race

I feel like guts would be a fighter with a small multiclass dip into barbarian!
Wielding a greatsword of course!
Hey so I'm pretty new and toying around in combat but how do I make tracking the distance like feet and how people run every action more convenient or easier? I'm also wondering if rogue is op bc of cunning action and dashing and running 60 feet every turn so monsters can never reach him
Are you measuring the distance of movement via tiles on a map?
Well I don't really have much except I printed a graph paper and currently using that
I tried to not spend too much and learn what I can from it
So usually a good way to measure distance is make each square five feet in game! So if someone has 30 feet of movement, they can move 6 squares that turn for instance!
I chose human fighter with great weapon master and greatsword and states; strength: 16, dextarity: 15, constitution: 15, intelegence: 8, wisdom: 10, charisma:8
I see, I got that far and in the essential kit we got to level 3 but our rogue is always dashing and running 60 ft away then using a crossbow for ranged so he can't be touched
Is that like unbeatable?
That is simply a perk of rogues! I'd say a way to combat this strategically is by placing various ranged enemies in different locations, in order to corner the rogue. However, if they are playing their class well, no need to punish them 🙂
it depends on how your DM designs encounters
Looks like a good block to me 🙂 Matches the character well!
I don't understand anything you just said. i have never even played a single match in DnD
your DM can:
- limit the space of the encounter (e.g fighting indoors)
- add difficult terrain
- add ranged enemies (this will completely shut down that strategy)
- add fast enemies
that will all make that strategy less than optimal
ideally the rogue is going into melee to get sneak attacks for extra damage
I see I see
but don't understand what to put in the other things like proficiences and stuff
Also I'm a bit confused on close quarter attacking
If ur 5 ft away why roll for ac shouldn't u just be able to hit them? Or do u get advantage?
i found a tutoriel on youtube but there are still many empty places
you roll for attack as normal
Because they still are wearing armor. Therefore the close quarter attack still must roll to hit. There are plenty of ways to defend close quarter attacks. Therefore you still roll to hit as usual!
AC factors in your sword glancing off their armor, the enemy dodging the attack, etc
Well put!
Oh so that's like part of the game I gotta say like the sword bounces off (name) armor and such?
Yes!
I don't understand anything
I'm very new and don't really know where dialogs should be input in situations
Thats a great time to help players imagine what is going on in combat!
you can, or you can simply say "I don't hit them"
making cinematic descriptions of your roll outcomes is fun, but discuss it with your table beforehand if they're ok with it, to avoid confusion
Have you read the Basic Rules friend?
I've read a lot of the 60 page book that came with the essential kit
Not any of the huge books though
some of them, but I have never played
neither have i seen anyone play it. just the jaiden video
I also have a hard time trying to give them fair fights they will challenge them and ones that they'll most likely survive
I once gave them 3 charging cows and it mauled them with its dashing gore attack
I would reccomend to both of you to google pdf versions of the players handbook. and Artillary for you to find a pdf of the dungeon masters guide! These can both aid greatly. It can also help to watch a stream of others playing to get a feel for the rules and how game flow works! I recommend Critical Role and Dimension 20. It can also be beneficial to play with others who are experienced!
I had to change it to 2 so they wouldn't die
Do you know how CR works?
imo the basic rulebook is plenty enough to learn how to play
Im here now
welcome
Howdy
True, I mean for a more in depth understanding.
Hey hey!
yeah, they definitely help

If you’re having trouble filling out a character sheet, feel free to to start with a premade character. They can provide a good frame of reference that you can use to play as you work your way up to building your own character. You can view and claim some on dnd beyond in the following link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
No what's cr?
I am off for the night friend, PM me if you have any further questions. Good luck on your campaign!
Oh alr cya and thx for the help
there's many ways that you can balance encounters on the fly
as in like, after they already start
How so?
I asked my friends if they wanted to play with me but they weren't intrested
That sucks if u really wanted to play I'm pretty sure u can find online games
essentially it boils down to:
- less enemies: if you were going to make enemies waves spawn in the middle, don't.
- making enemies flee: most enemies don't have a death wish, realistically. you can make them flee the battle at 25% health or something
- making enemies stupider: make enemies spread their damage out instead of attacking just one player, make them not use strong spells or special abilties
- lowering health: the players don't know how much health an enemy has. they won't know if you make it die earlier
you can apply these tips in reverse to make encounters harder too
it's the reason I never played
See I tried making them flee and my players scolded me for it
try going to #find-a-game and going from there
They said monsters were too dumb to flee
Challenge Rating. A system used to help determine how difficult a combat encounter is for a player characters. #dm-discussion can help you with DMing topics
Also I thought u gave players the monsters stats or is that a no?
typically no
Oh I see I'll have to research abt that
Character sheets and npc sheets are designed differently
if they want to know more about the monster, you might tell them to roll an insight/survival/religion/(whatever other skill) check
then you can say "your PC knows this monster is immune to poison damage"
Ohh I see
but monster AC, HP is not something the party is told
if they take notes, they might figure it out on their own
what would guts' alignment be?
I'll keep that in mind for next game
I did have a story happening until they got to a sleeping manyicore on a quest to save this person, then I made said person as they were sneaking up come out and yell at them to kill the beast
Then they got mad I was trying to kill them and it just ended there
But isn't that just part of the dnd experience?
#dm-discussion can help answer that question.
yeah these are good questions for that channel
Meant to say they thought I was trying to kill them ( I wasn't) but it could've been seen as that ig
it does seem like it yeah
Gtk I'll rotate over and thx for yalls help 👋
#character-discussion can help with that.
okay
Hello!^^
welcome
Thank you
Hello
I had my very first day of my first campaign today and I like the game
Have you played yet
Nope, but I'm excited to actually joina campaign
Do you have friends or family that play
I've actually plan on getting my family into it, but I need to learn on the mechanics
Ahh well I am in a campaign with my uncle and his friends right now but maybe we could play soon
online?
Do you have a character set up
Yea
I do, but I'm not sure if i did it right
You could dm me pics
If you want
I'll dm you in a sec
did you read all the rules?
I filled out what I needed to fill out online
How do I switch the icon next to my name I wasn’t looking and clicked the new to the game thing
go to the very top of thr channel list
should see like server guide and channel list, it's in one of em
Thanks
Sent my character
Ok I’ll look at it
Did you write down your dice rolls
So I can see what you rolled when you were making it
brand new player here looking to get into my first campaign
So I think I understand the rules a little better, but the thing I can't quite understand right now is hit dice
Aside from cheating, what’s a big taboo I should avoid?
Meta gaming, main character syndrome, not engaging with the DMs story
hit dice are a resource you spend to regain hp during short rests
Ah, thanks for clearing it up
guys i wanna play my first game but im scared to play with strangers who can potentially be toxic
Put yourself out there. From what I’ve seen, most,if not all, people who play DnD are nice
And if they’re not then call them out. Do whatever you want and block them, what are they gonna do?
👍
ight, I joined a community
Nice, also because i got confused, it’s good to dm the person who’s tagged in the ad in #looking-for-players to see if you’re a match on both ends
Hey, I have zero clue how to play (besides the very basics such as needing dice rolls and having the freedom to do almost anything ) does anyone know where I can learn. I'd hate to have to learn from a group and potentially slow them down/ruin there fun in some way.
Also, I know it's late for most people so if someone wants to respond the next day no matter how long its been, it'd be appreciated.
Its not late for everyone, It is mid morning for me for instance. There are some pinned posts, with links to help newer players.
I recommend a Youtube series called handbooker helper that goes through the rules in an easily digestable way.
Thank you so much!
Hey there. I have some 15 years roleplaying and character creation experience, i know the rules, how rolls work and am deep into fr lore but... I never actually played a game.
That's mostly because i live in europe but want to play in english.
Reddit told me this was the place to go
take a look in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community , and also look at #find-a-game to make a post in #looking-for-dm
uh how do I make a post in #looking-for-dm ?

Guyss can anyone help me start dnd i already went into every channel but i still dont get it i watched several vids but still need help
Let’s start small, then. What’s one specific question you still have about the game?
So
i already chose my Race and class but whats a background skill and all that stuff and is there like something i write it all down or do i just get a paper?
Your background is essentially who you were before you became an adventurer.
Each one offers two skill proficiencies, two language or tool proficiencies, and a background feature that gives you some extra roleplaying opportunities.
There’s a few backgrounds listed here in the Basic Rules you can choose from:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
https://www.dndbeyond.com/how-to-play-dnd This might be helpful to you. You can go thru their character builder too.
can i also make my own background or do i have to choose one
That’s a discussion you should have with your DM.

The more specific your questions, the easier they are to answer.
The term 5e is a shorthand for D&D fifth edition.
is there a wiki explaijing each versions
Which refers to the current ruleset for playing D&D.
m
i just wanted to ask if there is an online way to play it without having to stay in a call, i work till'late night but i can answer to messages so that would be a way of playing for me, this game looks so fun
Probably, but I don’t know of one off the top of my head. 😅
Think of it like video game sequels.
theres multiple versions?!
They’ve all got the same general story, but the rules might change a little between editions.
my friends told me so
dang
i'm totally new to the game
me too and my buddy
so idk ahaha
my buddy @vast wadi
You can definitely play by text.
we tryna learn fosho
Ultimately D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
oh thanks!
lore go hard
As long as you’ve got a way to communicate, it doesn’t really matter what way that is.
we could try to play but my skills are LOW
me too
but this game sounds so fun thats why i got interested
ye everything runs off dices
yea I understood that
ion think anyones willing to be a dm to new players
if ur lucky u win if ur unlucky u lose some 'quests'
it's understandable, with experienced players its more fun to them i think
our storyline will be pretty basic and full of mistakes so i get why they dont want to have us
u gotta have 20 years of experience at the age of 14 to play with the dm
yeah
unless one angel is willing to help us then they r very cool
@inland stirrup do you have a race and class and stuff
how do u make thay
i made a charater on dndbeyond's site
HOW?!
es
@midnight turret Can u
help me make a character mayyybe?
can anyone message me and just help me with making a charcter pleasee??
hi just joined myself complete newb here but i like stories
Go to dndbeyond and sign up for a free account and make a character. It'll walk you through all the steps
Ty
Hi! I'm new here. I know nothing abt dnd but my bf loves it. I was hoping to surprise him by making a campaign w one of our mutual friends.
Since I'm kinda artsy I wanted to contribute by making a map and some characters sheets for them
That's very cool and kind
Is your other friend going to play the role of DM? This role is to generally make the framework of the story and plan out most of the major story beats.
Since I'm not a player and there's three of us my friend suggested I be the DM but I think you mentioned in the other chat hiring one?
Would that be online or we hire someone irl
I wouldn't mind doing it, I'm a great writer too
Oh nice! Yeah you could totally take on the role of DM!
You could totally build out the adventure or campaign from scratch. You could also find an adventure online and read that and run it.
And yeah another option is to hire a DM. One place you can do that online is startplaying dot games.
Does a nat 20 on a death saving throw equal two successes or restore you to 1 HP?
Hi just joined here as well I am really looking to learn
You’re conscious with 1 HP.
Conscious? So the character can fully go back to fighting?
Yep.
No, they’re stable: no longer making death saves, still at 0 HP.
completely new to this, only saw a few skits on internet and wanted to try it out.. so anyone care to help me with most basics?
Try going through the Basic Rules, which are available for free on D&D Beyond
If you have any questions, feel free to dm me
thanks! is DnD beyond a site cause i cant see channel with same name

ok, but i got a question
ok never mind
found the answer, sorry
all good
imma check these all out, and learn
there is something like Use Magic Device of thief?
one thing, the campaigns done here(traditional not paid) are they one shot or like last longer?
do i need to be in vc or text works?
It varies from group to group
All characters can use a magic item.
Are you referring to different ability?
mostly a combo of both for length can be longer then a oneshot but shorter then a campaign
mostly people use vc but thier are text based games
ok!
Use Magic Device
By 13th level, you have learned enough about the workings of magic that you can improvise the use of items even when they are not intended for you. You ignore all class, race, and level requirements on the use of magic items
Hey guys! Was just wondering if there's a good channel to ask for advice on character builds specifically? I'm joining a 14th level game and have two similar but different builds that I'd like to get other people's opinion on
That refers to magic items that can only be attuned by certain classes or through certain conditions. That rogue ability bypasses that requirement.
#character-discussion would fit better
Thank you!

is there a specific channel where I can find specifically a DM doing only like a few hour DND campaign? all that I find seems very compromising and I only want to try it ou
You could still post your own ad in #looking-for-dm with your parameters, with the caveat that players usually flock to DMs, not vice versa. If you do decide to post, you need to follow #find-a-game’s instructions.
You can also join an Adventure League game. You only need to commit to a single game session that lasts from 2-4 hours.
how do I do that
Take a look at https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081 the most recent posts lists several games planned for the entire month of July

thanks
This also helped me thanks
Happy to help
The Virtual Weekends announced in the server’s Events tab also occasionally include learn-to-play sessions.
Where do I put traits on my char list?
Do you mean your ability scores , personality traits , or something else?
hi I am now to this and I need help to start the game and make a charter
I mean the things that you can get if you decide not to upgrade your stats when you level up
feats?
Yes. I just don't know English names for it
i usually put them in features & traits, its the bottom right square on the first page
Under the ideals, weaknesses, etc.?
yeah
Ah okay, that clears up my confusion.
If you’re writing on paper or a pdf you put your chosen FEATS in the features and traits section of the character sheet.
If you’re using dnd beyond’s character creator, the you just select Feats instead of Ability Score Increase and it will add your chosen feat automatically.
I'm pretty it'll be paper/pdf. Not like I can get the access to some stuff on DND beyond.
Thx to both of you
Happy to help
Hey I cant find a d&d website that lets me play as an artifser
That's because artificer is not part of the free Basic Rules. You would need access to the content, either by buying the book containing it or being in a campaign with someone who does have the content and shares it with the group.
Thank you
I will play as a different class
Hey everyone so i need help i made my character on DnDbeyond but what do i do now?
Use it in a dnd game if your dm allows it to, some campaigns got specific races or starting levels yk yk
#ddb-support should be able to help you. For best results, be specific about what your having trouble with.
Ah I read as you were having trouble with dnd beyond itself 😅
Feel free to share a link to the character sheet at #character-discussion if you want feedback.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game

I mean, i got something, but like, there Is a way to create a character without using the blank sheet from the pdf?
You can use DnDBeyond's character sheet creator tool - do note that without buying the books on DnDBeyond or being in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled, you'll only be able to use what's available in the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
- where can i see the limits that i can put on a character skills/stats/abilities
Read through the first few chapters of the free basic rules - but in general you can only have up to a 20 in any given attribute.
So like, i can put 20 on all stats and everything Is fine? (Btw i need to do a lot of questions to understand something that for me is interesting)
?tag new skills
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
No you can't just write in a 20 in any ability score. It needs to be generated.
Please read the first couple of chpaters in the free basic rules as they explain how to create a character
To see that It should be faster (and i'm tired, cuz i'll make the character and go to sleep) can you tell me what/how modifiers work?
I'll do It, not right now cuz i'm really tired, some Little things and i'll try to make One
A modifier is determined by what your ability score is. So every 2 points above 10 adds a +1 modifier to that ability. So an strength score of 16 means you'd have a +3 modifer to strength-based skill rolls.
Thanks, now i understood
There are also pre-built character sheets you can use. You can select some here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Where can I find the list of wild shape creature stats??
They are here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#MonsterStatBlocks) and in the Monster Manual.
Hiii! I'm new too, and also a bit confused

New to the hobby or to online dnd?
I've played DND before with some friends of mine, but it was less than 10 sessions, and not very long. I'm still not very familiar with a lot of the things, since our 'dungeon master' just kind of wrote her own plot and characters and everything. I think that's how it works though I don't know. But I want to get more into DND so that I can hopefully find friends willing to play DND.
Do you need info on how to navigate the server or what is dnd?
navigation
Well if you wan't I can explain you the basics and then send you on your way to #find-a-game to find a campaign to play in
i kinda alrerady know wut the servers about and where to go
So,you have all of the "dnd generals" to talk about dnd related generalities, then, you have #find-a-game which you can use to find a group to play with
if you need more info, follow this pop-up
Thanks so much! I'll probably explore more on my own. :D
Newcomer here. Just finished my character with help from an experienced player. I'm ready to start a campaign with anyone
Go right ahead bud
Hi so me and my friends are getting into dnd and I’m the dm because no one else wants to any tips and is there a website or app to help me get started
im new too just waiting for a good lfg post

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

Check out the posts above!
hey has anyone or does anyone do paid lfg's? like is there a benifit to doing them over free ones?
With paid games, you’re paying for higher quality, more experience, more consistency, and possibly a more immersive game.
If you pay for a game, the dm has a highter chance of being experienced, and it forces other players to ghost games less often
Though it should be noted that these are all just higher chances. Paid games aren't inherently more fun/polished/stable than unpaid ones. You'll still need to get a DM and group that you mesh with well
I'm new to DND and I'm going to carry through the game and hopefully join a party after a 2 year wait DND always interested me and I got to pick up a lot throughout my time but I do have a specific question it is that to create a campaign or adventure do I have to be DM and is this something I do whenever or when I'm a more experienced player and have learned the mechanics of the game and how it works when you play
Generally speaking, the DM is the one who creates the overall adventure/world. Though in some groups players will help with worldbuilding, it's not assumed.
Typically DMing requires experience, but don't let that stop you
Is it worth it to get copies of Tome of Foes and Volos (if I could find them) or just stick with Monsters of the Multiverse?
Hi, I'm completely new to D&D like 0 knowledge on it, where's best to figure out the basics to get started and how do people go about finding parties to play with ? Any tips are welcome 🙏
Hi I’m a dm that has been playing dnd for a while with my friends and now I want to try to branch out and dm or be a player of different groups

Monsters of the Multiverse would be more up to date and reflect the direction that D&D is going. Ultimately up to you to decide if a book is worth it for you and your games.
Hey, I'm Lex
I'm new to dnd and well I'm excited to learn
Apparently, those books have some lore that wasn't reprinted in Monsters of the Multiverse. As Noob said, the design philosophy reflects earlier 5e. Hopefully that helps you decide about the worth to you.

Hello
Hihi
hi everyone, im new to dnd and i was wondering wich is the best and simplest way to start playing with friends online without the need for a physical tabletop, the one i like the most so far is steam tabletop simulator with workshop mods
Heyaaa
there are way simpler ways
those ways are called VTT's (virtual table tops)
Such as roll 20,foundry,owlbear rodeo,etc
i also saw roll 20 but looked to me a bit less intuitive to use per say but might be completly wrong (more probable xD)
you can also use dnd beyond
Roll 20 is way more efficient than streaming table top simulator
by like a landslide
any good way for a terrible new player to join roll20 dnd parties? like one shots or something that are shorter and easier to get used to?

Hey folks I am new to the table top concept I have been working on warhammer models for a few months now but still not finished. I wanted to ask about D&D I am trying to see if there is a version of the game where I can play with my son either as the game master and he does like a solo campaign or is there a way for the 2 of us to play together with like a preset story that we just follow? Any ideas or directions yall could offer would be really appreciated.
D&D is designed for a group, but folks have built workarounds. In particular, Beth and Jonathan Ball have made a name for themselves in the community by fleshing out how to play duet style (one player and the DM). The pinned messages in this channel and #learn-to-play have useful general material on D&D for you to look over, but you'll also want to poke around https://dndduet.com/.
Another strategy: you (or he) could pilot a sidekick or two (described in the Essentials Kit and also Tasha's Cauldron of Everything) while his character remains the star of the show.
For families looking to play dnd with their kids, I recommend trying out the LEGO D&D collaboration.
You can find the free adventure here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/marketing/lego/red-dragons-tale.pdf

If you’re having trouble filling out a character sheet, feel free to to start with a premade character. They can provide a good frame of reference that you can use to play as you work your way up to building your own character. You can view and claim some on dnd beyond in the following link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
So I can just create a character from nothing?
I don't have to be like an existing character?
yep thats the point
If I wanted could I just be a turtle with a sword?
yep
Hello!!!
Could I make new abilities and stuff like that as long as its not OP?
There exist rules that will help guide your character creation, they'll become more apparent when you start reading through
While there are a limited number of published races, for most concepts that fit into the fantasy genre, there is a solution. For your turtle for example, you want to keep an eye out for the Tortle race
I was just giving out a hypothetical, I don't actually want to be a turtle but that sounds cool anyway, I would personally just stick to a human
well yes and no but mostly no, you dont make your own abilities you follow a class that defines your playstyle and you choose a subclass to define it even more
That kind of freeform homebrewing isn't really something that 5e supports massively. While it is possible to make entirely new mechanics, it isn't recommended for first-timers because even slight changes to the mechanics can have large unintended consequences
The more common method is to take an effect/ability that already exists in the game and 'reflavor' it to appear how you want it to
(Another hypothetical) Could I be like a dragon soccer player? and like shoot balls at people for damage? I'm just trying to see how much freedom I have while making a character.
not that much, you have weapons like swords and bows, this sounds like a magic item (weapons, armour and other stuff that has effect like magic) you could use but i dont think its a real thing
Yeah you could play a Dragonborn and then reflavor some kind of spellcasting to appear in the shape of soccer balls. Perhaps using the Warlock's Eldritch Blast cantrip
That sounds sick
I know NOTHING of DND, but ive watched smosh play their game and its literally sent me into an obsessive spiral that i am DYING to play this game... so
I made a character on DNDbeyond.. the only thing i am struggling with is a background. lol like i know it could actually be what ever i want but im not sure what to have. would i hurt if i didnt have one? or is it genuinely imperative?
Also how do i find a gameT_T i swear it sounds easier said than done
So like could I be an archer, but my arrows are just soccer balls, I just like soccer so I want to see how I can put that in D&D
Id rather wait before you get into a game, each DM has a different world, sets of rules and demands
some of them may not allow certain races because they don't fit in their world, some of em may ban some subclasses, some of em would rather want a more/less serious backstory
A background is a mechanical choice, and picking one gives you benefits. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
A backstory is a narrative about how your character got to where/what they are; whether that’s necessary depends on the table you play at.
ohhhhhh so you should find a game BEFORE making a character?
As for finding a game, read through #find-a-game.
Yeah, practice dosent hurt thought, making a character on dnd beyond is a great first step
you can make a character before a game but th dm's rules might make you change it
You should know how to make a character prior to joining a game, but any character you make will likely need to be tweaked to fit the table.
Woo! okay, noted
gotcha
Remember, getting int oa game takes a lottt of time, theirs about 20 players per 1 dm,and a dm on average only accepts 4,so its gonna take a while.
Remember:
be respectfull
Read the dms requirements and lore
Be polite and detailed in your applications
Replacing arrows with soccer balls might be a bit much. The mechanics of using a bow with two hands, and expending ammunition are both important mechanics that can have implications if altered too much
my next dumb/embarrasing question is how open are people to other people who have never played? Im certain watching some of a playthrough online doesnt translate to much of knowing to play
It depends, for exemple,im a dm that runs noobies only games so idm, some dms thought might require more experienced players
That varies a ton. If you can’t find anyone explicitly advertising they’re newbie-friendly, you can always ask.
Ok so now I see I have less freedom making a character as I thought I would
Wow also didnt know this! thank you ! ive always wonder how easy or hard it could be to start playing
Dnd isnt just "make up things and believe",theirs a set ammount of rules, and dms may refuse ideas that are too whacky
The vast majority of tables you will find openings for online will be open to teaching newbies, in my experience. We were all where you are at one point in time
Yeah I didn't know this
T_T EVERYONE IS SO NICE🥹
Now I require my payment of 70 dabloons
naurrrrrrr the cat stole all my dabloons 😔
can i pay in 1 noob at your table, instead?||JKJK IS THAT RUDE?!?!?!||
The first time i seen d&d was when I was scrolling through youtube a few weeks back and some guys animated their campaigns (I think thats what they're called) and some dude was a clown named chuckles and I thought the concept was hilarious
Thats why I was just wondering about my freedom in character making
I would consider that more than appropriate, you where friendly and funny about it and didnt just "hop on" without asking,so ill allow that, send me a dm
D&D uses rules so that the game can happen. If everyone just made stuff up at each moment, it’d be chaos—which could be fun, but that’s a different can of worms.
Oh yeah thats wild beyond the witchlight
if you look, their campaign barely contains combat
so its more of an rp only group
ah, I see
It’s also a social game; the group’s fun is important, not just your own. It’s important to be cognizant of others when playing.
You can get pretty wild with characters and people do. But it's usually flavored on top of the actual rules, so it helps to know them. And it's going to depend on what people are comfortable with
Some groups prefer way more serious games than others
That kind of thing is totally possible. If you break down their character into its pure mechanics, they're just playing a human warlock I think. They've flavored all their magic to appear to be classic clown humor like airhorns, hanky-chains and water pistols
I also seen a JaidenAnimations video about her dnd story and she literally had a mace, not a morningstar type mace, but like the spray
So I thought I had more freedom making characters
Like Rata mentioned, it’s usually described differently but it works in line with the rules. And different DMs allow more bend; some are more strict.
It can differ wildly depending on how strictly the rules are followed at a particular table. That kind of creative freedom can certainly be played with but is usually reserved for a group of players that have learnt to trust eachother
At the end of the day, thats why the rules exist. To make sure everyone is playing on the same level. If everyone trusts eachothers creativity, and knows they all want to just have a good time, the rules can be bent
Is their a voice chat where we can talk with other people? I am only seeing chat pages?
No voice chats here
So for now should I make like a basic knight or something like that?
In my experience, Epic Fantasy is the most common genre played out in D&D. So making a character that fits into that kind of story is a safe bet
The rules tell you the steps for character creation: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
(aka:Make Gimly.
No matter where or how you go about it,Gimly ALWAYS works.)
Playing a dnd hight fantasy game?Perfect, dwarf fighter with an axe
Playing call of cthulu?Perfect,a brute investigator suffering of dwarfism
Playing curse of strahd?Perfect,Gimly with a wide brim hat
I should probably read this then
As you learn more about the hobby you'll learn about how people "flavor" their character's abilities.
This is where the mechanics stay the same but the presentation can be unique to the individual.
For example there is a spell in the game called Mage Armor.
- If I were playing a wizard I would make this spell look like the wizard pulling the ink from their spellbook and throwing it on himself to create black inky armor.
- Whereas if I was a druid using this spell, I would make the spell look like vines wrapping around my character to form the armor.
Visually both look unique, but mechanically they both do the same thing as the spell specifies.
That's helpful to know
hey im very new to dnd and the only thing i do for it is make dice, might need some help understanding on how to play
Yeah, besides, Baldur's Gate 3 which I played until like 2 months ago doesn't exactly do a good job at explaining this

It’s almost every day that question gets asked. Look at the bot post above!
noted and thank you
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about asking questions.
Some questions are so common that I have automated answers to certain questions
I do wonder. Do you just have that all saved in a draft thread somewhere 😉
I just search old messages on the server when I copy-paste replies.
I just pull up my previous answers and repost them as well.
I am slowly refining those answers though.
Very slowly
I read the ability part of the rules, so I can just start with 15,14,13,12,10, and 8 for my starting scores?
I do miss a couple of the bot commands off the old server too 😁
A few of the handy ones didn't get copied over
Yep!
Is that not OP
Nah, that's literally the Standard array isn't it? 😉
Wow
And that's a fairly safe method for building practice characters. DM are much more likely to accept that than pre-rolled stats
Thats cool
I can apply them anywhere?
So like
If i really wanted 15 Dex, I could just slap it on there at the beginning?
Yep
remember, you dont gain stats EVERY level you gain
you only get 2 stat points at level 4,8,16,20
Fairly decent way to balance it out
Also, dont forget to apply your racial bonuses to the standard array
once you got your standard array
you can add 1 to a stat, and 2 to another
I either don't know what a Standard array is, or completely disregarded it in the dnd rules
Its the array of points you talked about 5 minutes ago
What you posted is the standard array. That's just the official name for that set of stat numbers
Oh that
I just didn't know the name, mb
Someone told me about a turtle race earlier, I dont see it in the basic rules of dnd "Races" section. What would be the traits of the turtle races or its racial bonuses?
It's not one of the free options, so we can't give you the exact mechanics
We got to pay for stuff like that?
Yes, you're on the official WotC server and WotC is the one who sells D&D books
There are enough options in the basic rules to play for free. But the additional content does cost money, or having a friend who can share it with you
D&D does also require a fair amount of reading
That sucks
If you don't want to read, there are explanatory videos and the like. But you can't get away from it entirely
And people are more likely to invite you back for games if you've put in some effort to learn the rules and the like
I'm reading a thing on something called Wargamer and it simplifys the race a lot better
The tortle looks cool based off what I read rn
Being able to hide in their shell for +4 AC and Advantage on STR and CON saving throws at the cost of movement seems interesting
Whatever you may or may not find on the internet, it's probably best not to mention any unofficial websites here. What with the whole, 'this is the official server for the people who sell that content' thing again
That said, I don't think I've ever actually used that ability with my tortle. It's not as useful as it might sound in my experience
What about Natures Intuition which (thank god for copy/paste) gives profiency in Animal Handling, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Stealth, or Survival?
It sounds cool
More skills are always handy
What are MotM traits, it says they can get +1 ability score increase in 3 traits, and their features like hold breath, claws, natural armour, Natures intuition, and shell defence
motm stands for monsters of the multiverse, its a book that basically expands on playable monster races
but every race starts with either a +1 in 3 stats or a +2 to 1 stat and +1 to 1 stat
can all books be used in one campaign? or how does it work?
It's generally up to the DM
yeah most books can be used in one campaign cus most books are pretty much just expansions or rewrite older books
but ratatoskr is right
So if I start a campaign with a group and ask can I be a tortle, can I?
up to the dm but yes
Cool, but just incase they say no I would need a backup plan
yea
Last question, isn't there a sheet where I can make my character, would I give it to the dm, and how do I get said sheet?
yes there is a sheet, you would get it from dndbeyond and yes you would give it to the dm when it is finished
ok thanks
but if you are still generally new to dnd its best if the dm walks you through making your sheet
ok, I can find a dm in find a game right? if so, ill try this tomorrow
every game must have a dm, if you're looking for a game try #looking-for-players
Hi, does dnd have a stablished official map or can you build it up?
every official campaign will have maps provided in the book it comes from, but if youre playing/hosting a homebrew campaign then you can build up your own map
I would guess I would send a message in one of the threads to join, or no?
no, you should see text boxes containing basic info for the campaign like time, desc, slots open, and style of play and below the textbox would be a thread you can openly chat in
I meant after looking at the basic info like time, style, how they play, and available slots
Which books?
well yeah theres an official map for the dnd setting called the sword coast but some campaigns like descent into avernus dont take place on the sword coast so have their own maps
Ohhh
Are they the rulebooks or smth or like an all-topic book?
nah theyre called modules which are basically pre-written campaigns published by wotc that fit into the already existing lore
D&D has multiple settings, the Sword Coast is just one part of one continent on one setting
yes, thats why i said "some campaigns"
The 'main' setting of D&D in 5e was the Forgotten Realms, which took place primarily on the continent of Faerûn (of which the Sword Coast is the most populous region) on the planet of Toril.
You said "the dnd setting", which is inaccurate
D&D has multiple settings such as the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, and Eberron
Also, Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus actually does take place in the Forgotten Realms, and part of the adventure is on the Sword Coast
D&D books can be broken down into two types: Adventure Books and Source Books.
Adventure books will contain full campaign adventures that come with areas to explore, NPCs to meet, and enemies to fight.
Source books will contain new playable races, subclasses, feats, and spells for players’ characters.
Does anyone know of a way to play dnd solo? Specifically just to get into the feel of actually playing and/or possible practice
You could try this interactive adventure by D&DBeyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Np! If you feel ready, you can also see if you can find a one-shot for newcomers. A bit rare (and fill up fast), but they're a great way to get into the game!
Oo, thats also a fun idea, How would I do that?
Check out #find-a-game, and see if anybody is advertising one
Hello, I’m a player who’s played 1 game so far and is about to go into a new one. I was wondering if most DMs include realistic side effects like hunger/thirst or carry limits (like you can’t carry a million small things) because the last DM didn’t do those things. They are new DMs
Like is it something that usually only professional/experienced dms use/do?
No, tracking food and encumberance isn't something most DMs do. Some may track encumberance, but almost none track food
hello i am a complete newbie and i was wondering what backgrounds and alignments are
background is ideally what your character did before the start of the campaign, most backgrounds give an extra skill or tool proficiency and equipment
but don't let that decide your background, they're not gonna ruin a good character of yours
okay thank you
as for alignment I always thought of it as how the character acts, and I believe there's 9? alignments being chaotic evil, neutral good, lawful good etc and a lawful good character would obey laws even enforce them, be constantly on the lookout for evil and try to stop it that kind of stuff
These are both explained in the Basic Rules!
Backgrounds are listed in there as well, and alignment is a simple way to describe your character.
oop
Alignment should be the last thing you make in terms of personality. For your character, it's simply a descriptor of how your character feels and acts. The spectrum of Good to Evil is (and this is a simplification) how selfless vs selfish you are. The spectrum of Lawful to Chaotic is (this is less of a simplification) how much you respect authority, Lawful being you want authority to exist and Chaotic being you actively want it to not exist. Neutral exists on both of these spectrums and, obviously, indicates that you don't have a preference in either direction.
So, for example, a tyrant king might be Lawful Evil, while a Robin Hood-esque character might be Chaotic Good
Would a dnd-monster character be considered homebrew?
Can you elaborate on that?
Make a character based on a dnd character
Like a mimic or something. Something like Chester from don’t starve
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything has the Custom Lineage race option, which allows you to gain some basic features and flavor yourself however you want.
So, you could make yourself small and take the darkvision option to imitate being a mimic
But not an actual mimic
There's no PC mimic species
Dang
You could even take Magic Initiate as your free feat and take disguise self as your free spell
The closest is the plasmoid from Spelljammer: Adventure's in Space
So I'm not to experienced in DND and been playing online with DND beyond. We paused our camping for a while and returning today. Will the new changes have already dropped and replaced what was already there? Or will they be it's own separate rulebook?
Why do I feel like I could have phrased that much better
No new changes have dropped yet, the 2024 Player's Handbook isn't out until September
Nothing has been announced as to how it'll be handled on D&D Beyond
So we don't know if it will be a new book or updated okay thanks
Oh, it's a new book
The 2024 Player's Handbook is a completely new book from the 2014 version
Same deal for the Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual
So it would not change existing DnDB character sheets then?
No information has been released on how D&DBeyond will update for the new rulebooks
Gotcha

Yo does anyone have any tips on starting a one piece themed dnd?
I’m not the DM but I just wanna know
That's not a newcomer question; D&D isn't designed for One Piece
You'd probably be best off asking in a server were the focus is on One Piece rather than D&D
Alright thanks
this has all the info btw!
oh yeah.. thanks again, u a real one
kinda afraid of creating a charachter with no experience so should i use premade for now?
a human barbian , found some premade on byond site
A premade is a fine way to get going.
why afraid? it doesnt matter how good/bad the build is and dndb is a good site for making characters, easy to follow and simple
Is it better to begin with the given char creator or purchase a digital bundle to expand for more?
Everything you need to play is in the Basic Rules which are available for free!
Give the Basic Rules a try. See if you like the game to start with before you put money down.
Idk how people even start playing. I've messaged/applied to like 20 games on here or on reddit over the past couple days and got either ghosted or no reply
The journey to find a group is long and arduous, but it is a worthy one.
Razorwing has a good guide on finding games
Who is that?
Yelo
ah, thanks
ya'll im new to d&d and i wanna make a caracter its a mix between wood elf + druid so when i got on to d&d beyond i saw like all tems weird thing idk whatr to do (druid class wood elf race)
"Wood Elf" is a race, and "Druid" is a class. So you can easily make a character that has that race with that class. What part is confusing you?
you can be woold elf and a druid
is there a shark race class in 5e?
There are several aquatic races, but none are anthropromorphic sharks
hello
ye but im a driid with the race being wood elf
The D&D Wiki is one of the least reliable sources of content out there. I would not recommend using it. It has an extensive amount of content on it that is unoffical and fan made.
like all the magic and things like keen sences and dark something
oh ok
Did you start by reading the basic rules, or did you just jump straight into the character builder? If you’re confused by some of the keywords and game mechanics, then reviewing the basic rules could help

ok thx
what is the things required to start a physical game? we dont have any dnd books or starter sets or any dnd stuff infact in my country so i was wondering if i could make my own
If you have cellphones, you can access the basic rules for free through the D&D Beyond app
Sooo, can anyone help me with character sheet troubles?
You can also use the app for dice rolling
Really just sheets, dice and the rules. You can get the basic rules for free offline, and sheets can be pritned off or you can make you own. Dice you can use apps for.
Anything else like maps, props so on- that's up to you how much you want to prep. Can do 'theatre of the mind' where it's all spoken and imagined, no props used.
So what part of modifiers are giving you issues?
Skills, saving throw, and I'm struggling to figure out what my AC should be on a wood elf with just hide armor
Have you worked out what your modifiers are yet from your ability scores?
Ya I have them
Strengh: 15
Dexterity: 10
Constitution: 12
Intelligence: 11
Wisdom: 15
Charisma:15
And I have bonus in athletic, stealth, survival and for saving throws I choice strengh and Charisma for bonus
Right, so those look like your scores.
Modifiers are based on those. Every 2 points above a 10 is +1. 9 is -1, and every two points below 9 is another -1. So for you:
Str: +2
Dex +0
Con:+1
Int: +0
Wis: +2
Cha: +2
Do you know what a Proficiency Bonus is?
+2 for level 1?
So all your rolls that use an ability, including skills and saves, use those modifiers.
For example Religion uses Intelligence so is +0 to the roll for you.
Survival uses Wisdom so is +2.
Now you're proficient in Atheletics, so you get +2 from strength and you add your Proficiency bonus on top. This scales with your level and should be +2 at the start. So at level 1, with 15 Str and prof in Atheletics, you add +4 to any atheletics roll.
So it's the modification from the main 6? The book said -10 ÷ 2 though so, this confuses me more
That's another way of saying eveyr two points above 10 is +2, so on.
Each Skill and Saving Throw corresponds to one ability score. Your bonus to that skill or saving throw is the bonus you have for that ability score, plus your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in that skill or saving throw
For example scores to modifiers would be:
Score: Modifier
7: -2
8: -1
9: -1
10: +0
11: +0
12: +1
13: +1
14: +2
15: +2
and so on
It gets higher though, around 18 is + 3 correct?
+4
Okay so I was right on my cleric

Every two points above 10 is another +1.
That's why they offer the -10 then /2 rule. (which works best for scores above 10)
18 - 10= 8.
8/2= 4.
(You round down)
