I suggest you read the Basic Rules, or at least Chapter 1, the relevant parts of Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 7, and Chapter 9.
But I think it's making everything unnecessarily difficult ...
I’m not sure I understand what you mean
I can help you walk through the basics.
Please.
Because I think this is too good for dropping it rn
Have you watched the Handbooker Helper tutorial video series yet?
What
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Okay then take a break/sleep.
No, i'm fine the thing is i don't understand anything
Would you like to start now or some other time?
I prefer to keep myself on regular rp's, for now
I don't understand what you mean.
Would you like me to walk you through character creation right now?
You don't know what are regular rp's?
What has Regular Retail Price got to do with D&D?
whoever came up with that needs to pick another acronym lmao
I also have no idea what you're talking about tho
This is why I suggested the video tutorials, they're easier to digest than reading the rules.
I do, but you're not answering my question. Do you want me to walk you throught character creation, yes or no?
What's "regular roleplaying"?
Sure ig
Just the roleplay you do on discord servers like i do
Okay...
Sorry I'm used to another type of Roleplay
D&D is roleplay, but it's also a game
Yup.
Alright, I'll go over it in the order you would go throught on dnd beyond's character creator.
First, choose a race.
Ok?
so it's not just bouncing off what other people say, it's also dealing with what happens and trying things
I'll just pick human for now
Uh... there's human and variant human, now what
You can choose either one for now.
regular human requires fewer decisions, might be best to start
Great, now choose a class.
Options are Barbarian | Bard | Cleric | Druid | Fighter | Monk | Paladin | Ranger | Rogue | Sorcerer | Warlock | Wizard
I'm stuck on choose a language
you can either save that choice for later, or pick something like Elvish
just to have sometehing
Yes.
Each class is different and offers different play styles.
Ok sorry If i making this annoying or dificult
It's fine, we're going through this one step at a time.
you can go back and change things later, this is just to see the process
Alright, there's any class that is a melee mage or something?
there's a subclass of fighter, eldritch knight
warlocks can also pretty easily spec into being a blade user
We can save subclasses for later.
Alright...I already have My character planned just learning how to do it
Now there's a whole bible
Keep in mind that there won't always be a one for one translation from a character idea to dnd.
There are options but for now let's keep things simple, so it doesnt get too overwhelming.
Ok
So if you want to be in melee and use magic you have a few base class options.
Now what it says i'm a lvl 1 barbarian
Okay so you've chosen barbarian.
That's fine.
Fighters skilled with a variety of weapons and armor.
Generally fighters don't have access to magic but it's okay for now.
Welp, At least I have another character that is full melee so is ok
Now there's a slightly shorter bible
Can I dm you the images?
The thing to understand is that generally each class leans to a particular thing they are good at.
Balance ig
Now fighters are bit flexible in their style of play.
Now here says I have to pick 2 fighter skills
You can pick perception and insight for now.
Now we have abilities
Correct
It reminds to the SPECIAL stats from fallout
Where it says generation method select standard array or point buy.
Okay great
What is constitution and wisdom?
constitution is how healthy you are, wisdom is how good you are at noticing things. basically
Huh
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.

So perception and endurance
street smarts compared to the book smarts that Intelligence has
Dang beat me to it
8,12,13,14,15 so...what now?
you want a decent amount of constitution, since it decides your maximum hit points
but you want good numbers in the things you use the most for your class
for a melee fighter it generally works best to focus on strength and wear heavy armor
16
Of constitution
Strenght of 15, Dex on 14, Int on 9, Wisdom 13, and Charisma on 11
That is ok? Or did a messed it?
As a quick thing to remember with each class, there is a main ability score that needs be set with the highest score.
Now fighter are flexible, so you can choose dexterity or strength to be their highest score.
That's fine.
Now description
Yes
To keep things simple feel free to choose a background that is available in the drop down menu.
Backgrounds provide you with proficiency in more skills, tools, and or languages.
So just the part where I describe My character?
it's mechanical benefits from what you did before you went into adventuring
Not exactly.
What
Bacground is different from backstory.
Background is basically what "profession" you did before you became an adventure.
Backstory is what your life was before you became an adventurer.
oh
For now, under background click choose an option. Then pick something from the list.
What is a folk hero?
Click to find out
Great help.
a commoner who's done something amazing basically
like i have a couple characters who were farmers originally, then saved kids from a bear
that's also a good one for fighter
Alr now choose a gaming set...what?
there's a lot of waiting around, so you had something to passs the time.
dice, cards, stuff like that
It's a little trinket that the background says you are good at using.
it's a way you can potentially interact with other people too
You can save that for later if you've like.
Alignment is an old system that's suppose to explain how your character handles certain situations.
chaotic good: you do your own thing and don't worry about the rules, but you also try to help people
For sure i'm adding that
Now lifestyle
modest is best for that
Keep in mind that when it comes to the Lawful/Neutal/Chaotic axis of alignments, "lawful" doesn't have to just mean actual laws. It could mean a personal code, a vow you've taken(like a Paladin's oath, which is why so many of them are Lawful Good), etc.
Thanks.
you don't need to worry about Faith, religions would depend on whatever the DM has decided for their world
Alignment doesn't have the same weight that it did in previous editions, there are very few game mechanics tied to it anymore. It's much more "descriptive" than "proscriptive" these days.
for physical characteristics you can use the details from your OC 🙂
I did it
Then it looks like you're done with the description section.
5'3" 165 lb and Heterochromia
All that's left is to add on your starting equipment.
for Personal Characteristics you would choose two personality traits, and one each ideal bond and flaw
the tables are common examples of those for a soldier
I choosed 3
just pick something that seems closest to what you have in mind
And what means ideals, bonds, and flaws
ideal is what's most important to you
If you read the choices you'll get a pretty good idea, the choices presented depend on which Background you chose.
like your guiding philosophy
bonds are people who are important to you
and a flaw is because nobody is perfect
just look at the things in the table and pick something that seems fitting
these are to help establish them as a character with their own motivations
Done
And for flaws i put
I’d rather eat my armor than admit when I’m wrong.
My hatred of my enemies is blind and unreasoning
you only need one but both are fun 😄
Now notes
those can definitely wait
Rlly?
you fill them in as you think of their backstory
Are more up to me then?
yes
or as things happen while adventuring
yep, you just need to decide what kind of armor and what weapons
I can't have any type of firearms right?
Your starting gear are determined by your class and background.
Alright i'll see what I can do
you got your pick of any other weapon besides. big ol' Greataxe, Shield and Longsword, whatever you picture them fighting with
Not sure how long ago it was, but I saw you were discussing alignment and I would like to give my Sam Explanation™️ on it
heavy armor is best since you got the strength for it, and taking more hits in melee
No thanks
so chainmail
Chainmail makes your harder to hit, while also making sneaking more difficult.
Letther provide less protection but doesn't making sneaking more difficult.
That's fine.
Alright so chainmail and spiked armor
There's no spiked armor.
Yes there's, i literally found one
which dropdown was it in?
are you adding items manually?
When you go to equipment, it gives you the option to choose equipment or gold. You select equipment and you select from a list of checkboxes.
And i did
You can’t weild a warhammer and a great axe at the same time and you can only wear one form of armour at a time
chainmail would cover you entirely yes
did you also go down to add items and started manually adding stuff there?
Wasn't speaking to you in particular, if you don't want to listen to my advice you don't have to.
That being said, alignment should be the last thing you make in terms of personality. For your character, it's simply a descriptor of how your character feels and acts. The spectrum of Good to Evil is (and this is a simplification) how selfless vs selfish you are. The spectrum of Lawful to Chaotic is (this is less of a simplification) how much you respect authority, Lawful being you want authority to exist and Chaotic being you actively want it to not exist. Neutral exists on both of these spectrums and, obviously, indicates that you don't have a preference in either direction.
if they're not taking a shield they get two martial weapons
I didn't took any shield
right, so you picked two martial weapons. that's fine.
And I thought i could a have a primary and a secondary weapon
you can't wield both at the same time, but you can have - yep like you said
Just to cover blunt and sharp damage
You only get your starting equipment at level one, not anything more
I was pointing out that you can’t use both at the same time
I'm didn't picked adamantite stuff just regular stuff
so if you've been choosing from the checkboxes and the dropdowns, i wonder how spiked armor slipped in there
sometimes a site can have things set up a bit weird
As for spiked armor, it's not something that most people get (it's a special thing for a specific subclass)
The page Game the option
What are you using to create your character?
DDB
Okay, after you select your starting equipment—that's it
There's some extra sections like potions, rings, etc.
When select equipment, you get a list of checkboxes that features the equipment then click a red button that says "Add starting equipment"
I did
And then that's it, you don't get anything else (to start with)
ok and you chose between crossbow & handaxes, then the two different packs?
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1089904541140521003/1252859354588254318/IMG_4095.png?ex=6673bfb3&is=66726e33&hm=d6627a80999632b99ef89d139df576b6b0db9bd28bba3645c4799ed9e442f00d& this is what your screen should look like for fighter
What?
the image shows choices you get
you can remove the excess equipment but for now you're pretty much done.
Your background determines your starting gold.
You choose the soldier background, so you get 10 starting gold.
Alr
Your already added it
So that's about it?
That doesn't really come into play, but that's how much you spend when you're not doing quests and such, just living in a city (that's called downtime)
Doubleback to the home tab and set character privacy to public.
That way you can share your character sheet for other to view.
if you make it public you can share the url link, doesn't have to be an image
Yeah, it should look something like this link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/126706155/GO5ofb
nobody else can edit it besides you, they can only look at it
Ik, I just want to add an image to my character and then i'll make it public
ah yes 🙂
Are you mad?
no, not at all
i just misunderstood what you meant by image at first
character pic is important
If you'd like a comparison to a human fighter, here is is a premade level 1 fighter on dnd beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/126706212/9DvrLG
Alright, It's way late on my end so I'm going to turn in.
i can stick around for a bit longer

if you look at the final tab, just past "What's Next", that'll show your character sheet
Wohoo
try clicking on numbers and seeing the dice roll 😄
I finished my main town map
congrats!
Congrats share it on #dm-world-building
People gets very angry when ai mentioned
@urban silo can I message you
it's fine for now
Sure?
Ok
Alright with that, you should have basic idea of what to expect in the character builder.
Feel free to experiment and try building other characters.
i can give a couple quick examples of rolls you would make
you're in a dark hallway, and without darkvision you can only see as far as your torchlight covers, 40 feet ahead
And I'm allowed to put a cap to the character?
if you're wanting to see if there's something ahead, the DM would ask you to roll Perception
what do you mean by cap?
you can pretty much dress them however you like. generally people follow more the medieval fantasy look but you can vary from that
click on the upper right thing that looks like a table and a hammer
then go to the Home tab
Uhhh
scroll to the bottom and under Character Privacy click on Public
so um
i reallyyy wanna play dnd but i dont know anyone who plays it
so uhh what do i do
You can always join an online game, or see if there is a local game and make friends.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops

- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
I prefer to get messaged here because it gives me a chance to help more people that way.
What were you wanting to send?
The character that I just did
You can share links to character sheets in #character-discussion and folk there can give you feedback.
Alr done do i send it here?

Whats the difference between a cleric and a warlock
a cleric uses divine magic, gets their power from their faith in a particular deity. a warlock uses arcane magic, gets their power from making a pact with some otherworldly entity - a devil, an archfey, a cosmic horror from the far realms.
a Celestial Warlock is sorta halfway between the two. they get their power from a pact with a (usually) good Celestial creature, like a Unicorn
it's basically the difference between gods, and powerful not-quite gods
i just learnt the term murder hobo and i was wondering exactly what a murder hobo is? do they just kill anything in sight and nothing else or is it an actual play style? trying to figure out if my big dumb forest man would count as a murder hobo

Im a first time dm. If someone could message me and teach me the basics I would really appreciate it! Thanks
Do you have a handbook? I’m new too but I have a handbook we could try and figure it out together

I don’t have any textbooks sorry
definitely get one
Yeah that’s what I mean I have one I could give you some tips based off the book
Sure! Ive been needing textbooks but idk which ones to get or where to start
You don't need any of the Core Rulebooks to play the game, but they can help
You only need the Basic Rules to get started
Read the post above for more info
I think any of them that say handbook or beginner
Ok thanks
Hello, how do I start dnd as a beginner?

You mentioned you got into D&D through BG3, so the above guide might be able to help cover some of that transition. BG3 is very similar to 5e, so a lot of things will be recognisable, but there are some differences to watch out for here and there.
Biggest step will be finding a group to play with. Are you interested in joining an in person group or an online one?
I did have some difficulty finding people to play with.
I do play with my wife with the Starter set which is useful because the characters are setup.

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
God I haven’t played DND but I want to so bad, but im struggling to find a group to join especially being so freshly new
If you're looking to play online, you should read through #find-a-game for instructions on using the server's Looking for Group/Game channels. If you're looking for in-person play, local game stores, libraries, school clubs, and community centers sometimes have tabletop clubs. You can also use digital platforms like Facebook, MeetUp, and Reddit to find in-person games.
Online is fine!
I’m not sure what things like ‘how do you perfer to play’ means though!
The form tells you!
in a call, play by post, things like that
Ohh gotcha! Tysm!!
I hope I can find a group. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for ages
if you apply and actively look, maybe you find one soon
There are lots of players, not as many DMs, so spread your net wide and be patient. I suspect there's a group out there for you!
Ahh thank you! ❤️
hello 🙂
my friend said that you have to buy a guid book and allot more stuff to lay D&D is that true?
Well hi
hi
You don't have to. The Basic Rules are free and have everything you need to play. But you do have to pay for access to other game content—adventures, races, spells, magic items, etc.
with reall money??
Yes, it's game material that was designed. That isn't free.
Seems like I’ll have to be above 18 to be able to play whit some of the people..
You don't have to buy the Basic Rules; those are free. Other rules cost actual money.
some tables allow minors
oh ok
The basic rules are available for free, which contains the bare minimum of rules and character choices for you to be able to play, but further character choices and more detailed optional rules must be purchased
that's because people prefer more mature players most of the time, you can probably find games that allow minors though, best to ask the dm
oh ok
thanks
glad you got something out of it too
Kk
For those who are under the age of 18, I recommend looking into youth D&D programs.
Some schools, tabletop game shop, and libraries will have that.
im super new to dnd and i just started learning today, just wanted to know if a half elf warlock is good for beginners?? bc i wanna create a cool character but also not too complicated 😭
Warlock is a great spellcasting class for someone new to DnD!

Hello.
Can someone help me find a game, i want to do a blind first "playthrough" and figure stuff out on the way
See #find-a-game!
You will be more likely to find a group if you've tried to learn the rules instead of offloading that to other players and the DM.
While it is possible to learn some things as you go, you will be expected to put in at least a little effort to learn things before joining a game. At the very least, you will need a character, so learning the rules on Character Creation is important. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly

hello
welcome
Hi
Hold on
Holding
proficiancy bonus. you add your stats like normal to all your skills and saves. than add your PB (proficiency bonus) to all skills and saves youre proficient in
?tag new proficiency
Proficiencies
Your proficiencies define many of the things your character can do particularly well, from using certain weapons to telling a convincing lie.
The table that appears in your class description shows your proficiency bonus, which is +2 for a 1st-level character. Proficiency with weapons, skills, tools, and saving throws let you add your proficiency bonus to applicable rolls, making you more likely to succeed. Spellcasters add their proficiency bonus to their spell attack modifier and spell save DC as well.
Your character also needs to be proficient with armor and shields to wear and use them effectively. There are drawbacks to wearing armor or carrying a shield if you lack the required proficiency.
Dam he found it b4 me
Yes
like stelth would be +2. +4 if prof
I have -1 in athletics oh no
You take your modifier for the ability score that is associated with that saving throw or skill, and add your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in it.
Athletics is a strength based skill, so it uses your strength modifier
if you have 8 or 9 strength, and no proficiency in athletics, then your bonus to athletics checks would be -1
I'm variant human using standard array
-1 athletics is fine. some peole have -3
well yeah its normal to be good at some stuff and bad at other stuff. cant be good at everything in DnD
even bards are only good at most things
And then 8 strength, 10 int, and 12 con
Those seem like perfectly fine ability scores. You may want to consider switching your wisdom and constitution with each other, but its an extremely minor difference
I'm planning on going a more debuffer route so I figured a lower con would be ok
Con determines how many hit points you have, so its always important to have high con, no matter what you are playing
Oh doesnt it help death saves too or something
Nope
Death saves are just a flat d20 roll
Death saves are a flat roll, no modified
10 and up = success
There are no bonuses to death saves
Is it acceptable to post advert for SPG here?
ok so would a crooked shopkeep warforged artificer have a delinquent background or a guild merchant background?
I dont know why its so hard to find people to play with because i get left on read or the campaigns are full
Tell me about it. I'm trying to find a new rabbit hole to jump into but all them are full
No it is not permitted to advertise a game here. Please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our LFG channels to advertise your D&D game, group, or server.
you can blend the two. like take the starting equipment of a guild merchant, and the Criminal Contact feature of a criminal (they'd be your "fence", say). look at both backgrounds' tables to choose proficiencies and personality traits / ideals / bonds / flaws that make sense for the character
How would i find a game with people to play with
Can fey characters take people names
There aren’t any mechanics for this in the rules, so it’s up to your DM if they can
@ashen mason A lot of times it’s how a player tries to find a group.
For example, a common pitfall is prioritizing matching time zones over matching availability.
While responding to a #looking-for-players posts with details of your play style and saying what you like with about a campaign will make you stand out better to a DM.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Happy to help, these two bot posts can also help you out.
Is it true that if a dm asks you to roll something besides damage its always a d20?
Generally yes. d20s are what you use to roll skill checks, attack rolls, saving throws, death saves, and so on.
You only roll different dice when something in the text says so.
Sorry I’m new here.. Is this server not for joining dnd games? I don’t know how to play so I figured jumping into one to learn was the best bet
Giving the rules a good once-over reading is a polite place to start, so that when you join a game you aren't completely unawares
If you do want to just fully send it and join a game there is the #find-a-game channel
Oh no worries I read the rules I was just wondering if this server had channels to play in. That was my bad but thank you

I am looking for a group to be a player, so I can learn how to play
Ah okay
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to find a group to play with and important information on how to use our LFG channels.
Well, welcome to the hobby
. This bot post here and my responses right below it can help you get started: #dnd-newcomers message
Overall I recommend taking the time of learning the basics because it can improve your chances of finding a group.
Cool
How do I fill out a character sheet 😭it’s so confusing
have you read the first chapter of the basic rules? it explains character creation step-by-step
I have the character made I just don’t know how to put its info on a page
Just fill out each box one by one
Yep.

Brand new to the community. Recently played my first 5e one off with some discord friends and am completely hooked! I was disabled in a work incident late last year and have way too much free time on my hands. D&D seems like an awesome and fun outlet that I can still participate in, regardless of my physical condition! Super eager to learn and explore!

@true musk Thanks, I will definitely check everything out!
I'm completely new to DnD but always wanted to play, I'm about 17 didn't know what class I'd like the most so I didn't choose yet
Have a look at the basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
what separates a warlock and cleric?
They're different classes
They have different mechanics and different flavour behind those mechanics
Anything beyond that is beyond the scope of this channel
#dnd-discussion would be a good place to ask
Can I buy individual subclasses on dnd beyond?
not anymore
do most campaigns require you to make extensive character sheets before joining or can i just have a character sheet with their necessary info + a very basic lore (which i hope to just improvise during the campaign)?
Ok
There is no "most campaigns", every campaign is unique
You're best off just asking the DM what is expected
okay!!! thank you
Hello, I am new to DnD and was just wondering a good class to start of with? I have a character in mind but second guessing the class choice
There's not really a best or worst class, just what suits your preferred style of play. Why don't you come over to #character-discussion and tell us what kind of character you had in mind?
hey, so ive never heard of dnd untill stranger things season 1 and ever since ive been wanting to play but i dont know how to or what do do or even like what the rules or anything are, my aunt did buy me a guidebook for christmas and ive tried to read it and i didnt understand anything, what do i do?
Hey there! A good start is to check out #learn-to-play , there's a lot of helpful links to get you started there
ok thank you!
how do i a prepare a spell in avrae
#ddb-avrae-help would be the place to ask rather than here
opp thanks i got it tho
Hii
how do i post to "looking for dm" channel?
Type /looking-for and then select dm.
This info can be found in #find-a-game.
Did you ever get your character made?
Did you figure out what class you wanted to play? I might be able to help figure out what you will like
I would personally recommend dnd beyond I feel like it’s more beginner friendly since it has a nice interface but the problem is to get new subclasses and races you have to buy books. Or be a part of a campaign where the dm already owns the books
But it has a good interface for you to get started and adjust your character on an actual sheet afterwards if you don’t have the money to spend on the books

Can somebody explain how you switch spells?
That depends on your class! What class are you?
Druid
Then when you complete a long rest you can swap out any/all your spells for any other ones that you can cast.
Ok
Druid is nice and flexible like that!
Anyone have any suggestions for a D&D Beyond like app or website that I don’t have to buy all the books for?
Same here
Fartwad needs his workarounds
Nope cause if it’s not on dndbeyond or the other sites where you have to pay for it, it piracy and against this servers rules
This is the offical dnd server so you know
Basic rules are free
You will find them all in one peice
(You wouldn't go into a bookstore and ask them where you could find the books they're selling for free, after all)
Which is better is preference
I prefer hard copies because those I at least 100% own
But if you mostly play online, digital is convenient
I imagine in a stressful fight someone just says “erm let me look at this” and all you here is frantic page turning
The important stuff is usually on your character sheet
Yah I concur
Digital vs physical is mostly a personal preference thing. I really like the search tools and convenience that comes from having digital books, but some people just really like having something physical. A lot of people buy their books physically first, and then find out they don't transfer to digital, so they stick with physical because that is what they own
I also have my books completely tabbed out for quick use 😁
Is there a technician based subclass
Is there a way to buy physical with a digital code to link it to your D&D beyond account at least?
Depends on what you mean. Modern electronics and technology does not exist in D&D, but the artificer is a entire class based on creating magic items and tinkering with clockwork and the like. But Artificer is not included in the basic rules. You'll need to purchase either Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or Eberron, Rising from the Last War to play as that class
Unfortunately no, if you have a physical book, the only way to link that content to your DnD Beyond account is to manually type all the content in individually.
Artificer is also, what I would probably consider to be the least beginner friendly class in D&D, largely becuase it was designed to be an optional add on instead of part of the base game
You can buy bundles from WotC that are physical and digital, iirc. But they are more than just either option alone
Correct. A digital+physical bundle is basically just buying the book twice, usually with a small discount
(you can tell how little I buy digital content) 🤣
I believe for the 2024 Players Handbook, they didn't even give it any discount. The bundle is literally just the price of the book twice
No no, no electricity duh. That’s the stuff I meant
What are the monstrous races I hear about
And are some playable
I’m putting yall to work rn
Quite a few
So… con-artist kobold
The Mordenkainen presents: Monsters of the Multiverse supplement has a number of player race options that are more classically monstrous, now available as player options
Monstrous Lineages
Bugbear Centaur Goblin
Grung Hobgoblin Kobold
Lizardfolk Minotaur Orc
Shifter Yuan-Ti
Hell yah
Some may be classed as fey now though
Alright alright
Forgetting about plasmoids (ooze folk!) and thri-kreen (bug folk!).
There are roughly 60 playable races covering a few different books. Dnd beyond lists them here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
love these monsters
So how about a con artist kobold. Who sells junk for outrageous prices
If it fails
Sure play a bard or some other class with good deception
He steals 🤷♂️
I might personify him to be shady but a toned down brash manner
Stupid ideas, is his main problem
Stupid as in: as soon as the party is in a money problem. He will try to persuade the party to resort to stealing
I'm new to D&D and I recently bought the Starter Set. I have problems understanding how does Proficiency Bonus and Skill bonus works. Can anyone give me easy example about it?
So say you're a level 1 fighter with proficiency in Athletics, giving you a +2. Your Strength score is 16, so you'd add +3 to Strength saving throws, checks, and associated abilities like Athletics. When you roll a d20 for an ability connected to Strength, you add +3 to the total. If you also have proficiency, you'd add +2 as well.
- Your Ability Score is a number that determines your Ability Score Modifier.
- Your Ability Score Modifier is added to relevant checks, saves, and attacks.
- Your Proficiency Bonus is added on top of that number if you're listed as proficient in those checks, saves, or attacks.

Can read the monk abilities/features here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Monk
Each monk subclass has specific features that they add to the monk class at certain levels.
If you buy both the digital and physical version on D&D Beyond it's twenty bucks cheaper. They knock the price of the digital version down to $10 if you bundle it with the physical version.
What is better a warlock or a sorcerer?
Both are good, it depends on how you want to play
"better" is entirely subjective. They both have pros and cons, and very different playstyles. You can pick whichever one you think you will enjoy most
hey guys do you know any free app or website where i can create maps and stuff?
oh alr ty
For new players?definitely warlock
for experienced players?Definitely sorcerer
For verry good players? both.
All classes are entirely viable
just depends on the level of play
But warlock can still be hard, make sure you understand your character and what the rulebook says for leveling up!
Yep,Warlock is extremely easy to play when you get the hang of it,but the spellcasting rules can be a little confusing if you played other spellcasters before
There's also a lot of story potential with Warlocks depending on how much you & your DM want to delve into the nature of your relationship with your Patron.
So do sorcerer but thatd be something in #character-discussion
not in #dnd-newcomers
I’ve been wanting to get into dnd for so long but no one around plays so are there like any tips I should be aware of?
uhhh, be patient and the biggest monster is scheduling
Scheduling is my worst enemy
its everyones worst enemy
I am kinda getting into but Im a slow learner so it may take a while but I’ll at least have people who can help me online
Hi, thanks, I will try and keep it short as there is a bit of a back story of the character
Hey everyone! I’m new to this, I have tried to play dnd in the past but it didn’t really work out. I am good at creating characters and lore and that’s about it. Looking forward to learning with this awesome community!
Can someone explain detect toughts to me like if i cast this spell on a NPC does it have to make a wisdom saving throw or i just read that NPC's surface toughts?
hello does anyone have a dnd call or something that i can join eventually
It does precisely what it says in the text. You can read their surface thoughts automatically, digging deeper is what requires the save.
When you say superficially reading your mind, can you explain what it means? Is it something like "I'm happy" or is it longer like "I'm happy and I'm thinking like this and that"?
"You initially learn the surface thoughts of the creature—what is most on its mind in that moment." Anything more specific than that you'll need to discuss with your DM. But overall mood will likely be a possibility.
Guts....
Not yet, it kinda depends on what character I'd like to be at the time y'know?

Is there any new player campaigns ?
Check for games in our LFG channels - see #find-a-game for more information and instructions
(and read it carefully)
Perfect, thank you so much! I appreciate the help.
I'm having a hard time finding a group to play with I've tried stalking #looking-for-players but I just can't find anyone thats looking for beginners and using dnd beyond what should I do?
Same
Be patient, keep looking, keep advertising yourself, spread your search wide (check Roll20, Demiplane, and other gaming sites/servers). Also check some of the D&D servers advertised in #looking-for-community. But organizing a group of people to play a game for 3-4 hours and coordinate schedules... takes time and effort.
How do I advertise myself
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our LFG channels (including the bot commands to use to create a post and it's attached thread in those channels)
Other places will have other processes/tools for advertising yourself on their platform.
Not all members specify they're open to beginners, but you can always ask!
Enlarge your scope, the lower your standards for a game, the easier youll find one.
Remember, those things take time, it can take months to find one
I don't really know how or even where else I can play besides on dnd beyond ._.
Roll20 and discord are good, as are local game shops
You should check with your friends.
Either that, or I just got really lucky.
Assuming, of course, you haven't exhausted that option.
Whats a good role to start with
Whatever class you think you'd like the most
I have no friends that are interested in dnd 😔😔
Find people who want to play D&D and make them your friends
I could be your friend? 👍
I'm in the same boat
Hey everyone! The name's Midori, and I am a Complete beginner to D&D, haven't even started D&D beyond yet. Typically, I am timid so I don't really meet new people however, I am trying to grow out of that. I am in search of a party that I can start a campaign with, whether I am joining or creating one. I am also open to making new friends, so you can msg me whenever.
Glad to hear it, welcome to the hobby! Feel free to ask any questions you have about any rules you read in this channel. The general advice given to anyone starting out is to give the rules a once over. The #learn-to-play channel is a great place to start as it is filled with a bunch of different resources to help get a general idea of how to play
Thank you!
Alright imma be honest, is there any communities that arent 18+
I CANNOT find any in my age range
Subclasses are things you can choose at each classes prerequisite level (cleric level one, druid level two)
What class are you referring to and have you read the Basic Rules?
There are a lot more DMs than players, but be patient and keep searching
Rogue. And, I have not to be honest.
they're different flavors of Rogue
Rogue is third level and you can choose between the options of rogue subclasses
specialize your playstyle a bit, or image
Hm... I was considering Assassin.
There is no other prerequisite, other than class and a level
no, they're part of how you build your class
each "archetype" (or subclass as they're more generally known) provides a different set of additional features
Sub classes, have different abilities from each other
you get the general Rogue features and the Assassin features, and not the Thief or Arcane Trickster features
Well, I will state. I'm quite fond of stealth. And I was hoping for an archetype that would be suited for the Chaotic Good alignment, without being Robin Hoodish
You said it better
thief is probably the most stealth focused rogue subclass
but it's a minor difference
any rogue can be stealthy
Even compared to Assassin?
Also, aren't thiefs more focused on looting than killing?
flavour wise sure, but the mechanics don't really focus on that
thief has mechanics suited to infiltration, stealth, and climbing
Understood... Do any of the archetypes do anything related to minor alchemy such as creating poisons?
assassin has disguise and assassination mechanics
iirc assassin has something like that but it's limited and at high levels
Interesting...
I was kind of hoping to be stealth based on focus on poisons/tactical approach
Don’t know much about alchemy, but the arcane trickster has spells
That kind of deal.
you gain Poisoner's Kit proficiency as an assassin, at level 3
any character can use poisons
but you can also get Poisoner's Kit proficiency from your background, by customizing
tactics generally comes down to your play, not the class, although spells will generally provide more tactical options
Yeah. But I was more hoping to specialize.
there aren't a ton of options to specialise in poisons
I don’t know why it’s you to do it unless you have more experience but there’s this magical thing called homebrew
You can also multiclass into artificer
Thank you btw. I feel as if I'll approach the Assassin class. Thief's nice and all, but I wanna finish the job.
I really wouldn't recommend homebrew to a new player
What's artificer?
one thing i'll note: the Assassinate level 3 feature looks very deadly. but it depends very heavily on getting high in the initiative
nor multiclassing
yeah it's kinda minor all things considered
I’m using voice type and I didn’t type what I wanted,
Isn't homebrew the types of DnD that are more... customized?
For now, I wanna at least try to stick to the fundamentals.
homebrew is custom material for DnD
Just telling him the options
it can come with major balance issues and other things that mean I only would recommend it to someone with more experience
I heard that the Assassin is a terrible class apparently. Though, that was a while back
Better than ranger
Jk
lol. How bad could ranger be?
Hello! How do i get started?
Bow and arrows are generally pretty nifty
DND beyond gives it some free books for you to read
ranger can be good

I have a feeling it can be. Well either way, I think I'll try Assassin. Thief seems like a close second, but I feel they're not suited for combat per se. And more so used for utility
Though for all I know, I could be wrong
if that looks the most fun to you, then it's worth trying out
If you choose a wood elf and have a Druid use druidic magic you can disappear and stealth attack repeatedly
and you'll have a couple levels to get the hang of Rogue in general before choosing, so you can try being assassin-y or thief-y to see which playstyle you enjoy most
Hm. Not sure if there's a druid. I imagine a friend of mine would pick Paladin. Not sure of the others.
Just telling you
No no. I understand. Thank you.
Any tips on how to dm as a newcomer in dnd? It’s probably hard but I’m only dming one player witch is my sibling
I know it’s best to be a player to know the game first before dming but it’s been pretty hard to find a campaign that I could join and play with my timezone and schedule
im a little bit new to dnd, and I just reached sorcerer level 3 with a new spell slot to use, can anyone help me decide which 2nd lvl spell to obtain? i think im choosing between suggestion, mirror image, or levitate
Depends on what sort of things you want to do with your Sorcerer. Do you want defensive spells? Offensive? Support?
im not too sure, they all sound useful if I can use it right, which would would apply to each strategy?
Suggestion can be used defensively or as support. Keep in mind, you're casting a spell so the target would know. Mirror Image is good defensively since it creates the chance to miss. Levitate can be used offensively but requires a con save, plus the item can only be up to 500lbs. Good for carrying something for 10 minutes though.
So I'm completely new to DND and my brother got me into it he taught me nothing so I wanted to learn and play

Oh ok
Bro got redirected to get redirected
and we can answer other questions here, these are just links for more info
Ok thanks
Hi
which one do you think would be the most useful in general?
I wanna cut to the chase
How to play the game
Levitate is good for adventuring, suggestion is good for roleplay and mirror image is good for combat. So it would come down to what kind of campaign you're playing in.
I’m thinking levitate but they all sound funnn
Levitate can be super fun
Since it's the one that first comes to mind, I'd say it's your choice 😄
so can suggestion be used in combat as well? say if I tell the enemy to miss an attack or something? but I know I can’t tell it to hurt itself
Sort of, more that is could be used to try and deter comabt
that is true, it’s the one that won’t leave my mind
Than I'd say go with levitate!
ok thank you!!!
Yo I need some help with a custom dnd I’m doing
You can hit up #homebrew for help modifying the system if you like.
But (if you dont mind me asking), if you're new to D&D and not just this discord, have you first considered attempting to reflavor some existing mechanics? Its much easier and can often be just as effective
I’m not new to dnd been playing for 5 years just I’m still getting used to discord
Ah, alrighty then
hello everyone! glad i found my crowd. been dying to play and learn. (‘: if only someone would be willing to teach!
hi, I have no idea how to play and would like to get to learn some time!
It’s not really feasible for every single new player to get a one on one lesson
@main chasm and @dense reef , I recommend both of you read the basic rules
Hello. New here. New to DND as a whole really. 🙂
Just wanted to drop by and say hi. So....Hi!! 😁
Hiii! Im new to dnd, and i really wanna know how to play, ill be in your care!
#learn-to-play has tons of info for you
hiii I’m back, I just wanna see if I can get some advice in being able to roleplay your character’s personality, im finding myself struggling to cement a personality on my character as a newbie, im used to roleplaying post by post so from there I can think for a while on what to do, but now that im doing real time dnd, im finding myself stumbling on my words and shrinking in awkwardness 😂😂 I mean I implemented my awkwardness into my character but I still feel like it’s just coming from me and not the character. I heard about sticking to a few adjectives and going from there but when it’s my turn, it completely wipes from my brain and I just feel like im playing as myself
https://youtu.be/uBsG90wfC4M?si=Ta2CHeTJ_pXuZ6I6 good video by the dungeon dudes on roleplaying your ideals, bonds etc could be some help
I'm a proponent that nobody knows their character until they have played them for ~4 sessions. Don't feel pressured to have a solid personality for them until you get the feel for them.
My dude PREACH
Role play is very nuanced and is the hardest thing for new players to do
Greetings
oh thanks! I’ll check that out! hahah watched a few seconds and I already got a character idea for the next character I want to play if something… unfortunate happens to my current character
Dungeon dudes have some great videos to expand on your character
ohhh ok that makes sense, I guess I felt pressured cause almost all my party members seem to got ahold of it even tho they’re also new and we’re only on session three, but I don’t want to jump the gun so ya you’re right
avoid terrible roleplaying and backstory advice are 2 really good videos from them
I’m a bit new to dungeons and dragons. Can anyone tell me how much dice should have?
One set is more than enough for IRL
But you may want a few extra d6 for damage rolls
I have 11 sets of dice
Nice become the dice goblin
ok
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
Hello new to dnd can't wait to play with people 🥺
Welcome! If you already have a rough idea of how to play (and if not, check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel), take a look through our Looking For Game channels to find a group to join and play with - see #find-a-game for more info about those channels and how to use them.
How can you improve your story telling because I was normally a player but now I will be the dm because he wants to play again
- Provide sensory details in your descriptions (e.g. "as you move through the forest, the smell of pine trees and foliage surround you. A light breeze makes the treetops dance and cools your skin as dappled sunlight plays across the forest floor. Birdsong fills the air.")
- Don't get too much into the weeds - folks play D&D to have fun so always focus on good, safe, fun first.
- Watch videos, listen to podcasts of other DMs and see how they do things.
- Reflect on folks you know who are good at telling engaging stories - what do they do.
What EXACTLY is an artificer and what do they do? They seem to be quite popular and i dont get em
Masters of invention, artificers use ingenuity and magic to unlock extraordinary capabilities in objects. They see magic as a complex system waiting to be decoded and then harnessed in their spells and inventions. You can find everything you need to play one of these inventors in the next few sections.
Artificers use a variety of tools to channel their arcane power. To cast a spell, an artificer might use alchemist’s supplies to create a potent elixir, calligrapher’s supplies to inscribe a sigil of power, or tinker’s tools to craft a temporary charm. The magic of artificers is tied to their tools and their talents, and few other characters can produce the right tool for a job as well as an artificer.
They modify and manufacture objects as a conduit for the magic of that thing
So they use magic on objects specifically
They use the magic of objects
They unlock the inate magic of artifice
Like how bards unlock the magic of creation and performance
Hi, I’m pretty new to DND compared to most, but there’s a specific problem that’s been plaguing me
Do tell
There’s a wizard in my campaign who pretty much does whatever, and anytime my character stands up to them they get put on death saving throws by magic missile
How do I beat it if it 1) always hits and 2) goes around cover
Prob because u dont yet know strategies to counter specific spells
Either that or they’re powerplaying (or u got low hp)
Ask to pause the game and have a group conversation about PC vs PC conflict because it sounds like expectations and boundaries have not been clarified and that can lead to Not Fun
In game actions cannot solve out of game problems
PVP is also p iffy, usually leads to bad arguments.
It's not iffy, it's completely unsupported by the games mechanics
Is it another player? If those arguments are frequent and not completely in character, it sounds like an issue you should solve by talking to them outside of the game.
It kinda feels like the second option, esp since we’re only level 2 and I can’t really get the drop on them either
I would question why your D&D game even wants or needs PC vs PC fighting
We’re friends irl, and its in character for the most part for us to argue since my character’s at odds with theirs. I just wish I didnt lose outright every time
PvP can be fun on some specific groups. But if the both of you are not having fun, this isn't a problem of builds.
I guess I’m just wondering if theres some obvious counter i dont know yet, or if there’s really nothing I can do but wait for higher level feats (they might be too powerful at that point)
Here's the thing; PVP does not just affect you and the other player, it affects the whole table
PVP can blow up an entire campaign just because two people decide to butt heads in-character
Or worse, are butting heads out of character through their characters
I see how that can happen
Anyways, if you truly want to defeat a Wizard as a Rogue, the best option is not to face them directly. Can you pickpocket their focus or component pouch? Can you hide from them?
Discussing PVP
strategies
is not a topic for this channel I should clarify
O, my bad
Because PVP is not something that is part of the core fabric of the game and thus goes far beyond what is considered the basics
Step 1: Become a friend and ally of a major power or faction in your D&D game
Step 2: Have your new allied power get upset at your desired target
Step 3: Work with power/faction to deal with the target
Step 4: profit?
... I'm just joking here but there are other ways to deal with conflict beyond head on PvP
But the best solution is actual player conversations to set the boundaries and expectations so it can be handled in a way that ensures everyone has fun.
that makes sense
Also, if you think that the conflict between your characters is an interesting plot beat, why not talk with the DM about it? The three of you could work together on some way for the characters to start trusting each other. Or set up a more fair final confrontation between them.
o i didnt even think of that
All this stuff is still new to me, and all ive really thought about are the spells and feats, not so much the interactions between characters
Yeah, D&D is as much of a storytelling game as it is about combat or exploration. You should always communicate with your DM about what your character is planning to do and what types of character arcs you think they should go through.
And also with the other players to make sure that PvP is indeed being a fun experience to everyone. Communication, communication, communication.
You're welcome! Good luck!
Has anyone used those 2d plastic figures from wizkids? Are they any good???
This channel is more for new to D&D folks get started with learning core game rules and mechanics - I'd suggest asking in #dnd-minis
Oki doki thank you
Thanks
Hi I'm new here I would like to learn dnd
Watched it on shorts thought it was interesting
Welcome! Give#learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel a read and let us know if you have any specific questions!
Oh okay I know I have to roll for stats and initiative and stuff for playing I don't understand class and race do they offer certain stats and bonuses?
All of that is described in the Basic Rules.
You can multiclass????
Yeah do give the free basic rules a read. Your class determines your hit dice, class features, proficiency in certain skills and saving throws, and starting equipment
That sounds sick
You can multiclass but it's not recommended for new players
This cheat sheet is a pretty good set of tips, and the guide as a whole is worth reading. There are plenty more resources out there for the new DM, especially for one-on-one play, but no sense hitting you with everything all at once.
Yeah I probably shouldn't multiclass id be a wizard rogue. And have to build dex and intelligence. I only know the basic rules by watching YouTube.
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

You can play D&D with just the free basic rules but you will be limited to the things it provides
Additional books can be purchased which provide more rules and options
I have the dice I bought them at a geekout store but I don't own books.
Free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Okay how much are said books
I want to learn everything been interested for about a year or two now watch livestreams just because it looks fun.
Some are as low as $29.99 US through DnDBeyond (this is digital only and no, you don't get a PDF or physical book)
DnDBeyond sometimes runs sales too and the prices could be even lower.
You can also check your local gaming store or book stores and see if they sell physical books.
Or use Amazon
I'll just buy them all I guess. I'll be stuck reading for a few weeks I see like 4 books with hundreds of pages that recommended.
It's recommended you try the game with the free rules before investing in it.
I'd start with the Players Handbook but maybe wait until the new 2024 version is released
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I see the paid options and looking for players do I send them a message?
Yes you can direct message the poster or use the thread attached to their game to say you're interested.
Read #find-a-game to learn more about our Looking For Game channels.
Which would be the best game to join because most of them say veteran players. But I am probably the scrubiest of scrubs.
Like fresh blood type of new.
If they don't specifically ask for veteran players, then contact the poster. Not everyone specifies they're open to new players, but you can always ask!
Many groups are fine taking on a new to D&D player as long as said player has put in some effort to learn the core rules/mechanics and vibe well with the rest of the group.
I'd probably be the comedic relief.
I shall play bard for my first game. Watched streams they are usually the funniest
I'll read the rules and mechanics before asking if I can join I'd feel bad if I ruin it for everyone.
Also be prepared to adjust your character to best fit the group and kind of D&D game/setting you'll play in.
Seriousness I want to try a wizard/druid. I gained those types of playstyled in games. Healing is fun. And I play Black mage in ff14
So those two are probably the classes I'd start with. Unrelated i know but it's probably my comfort zone
Those are definitely more complex classes, but anything can be learned with patience!
Both are p basic and well-known
For healing i suggest bein a cleric, for black mage either take a necromancer path with wizard or jus be a warlock/sorcerer
I'm reading that paladins can also heal? Is that serious. Because paladins in games I play usually just tank and don't heal.
You'll see some overlap between D&D and video games or fantasy media, but they aren't exact matches.
This is complex
Races give bonuses but also negatives. And set alignments. Only one with all positives is humans.
With +1 to everything
You'll find that most classes only need good scores in one or two attributes to work. Many races are actually better than human, depending on what you want to do.
But it's also rare to see one with negatives. I wonder which one you're talking about.
By negatives I mean they don't add to anything
Just a positive here and there
And I'm confused
Oh, also alignments are not set. They're just suggestions and can vary a lot based on character, setting and culture.
That's true of pretty much all races: +2 to one stat, +1 to a different one.
What's a halfing and half orcs.
Some of the new rule options in D&D remove the racial/species bonuses as in you can allocate a +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 to any attribute you'd like.
Halflings are basically hobbits from LotR. While half-orcs are the result of an orc loving a human.
Tiefling seems like a good race for me if I Want to be a mage
Any race can be any class effectively!
If you're set on being a Wizard, you should look for races that give bonus to Intelligence. But the variant rule introduced recently allows you to move your stats around with DM permission. So your half-orc could transfer that +2 to Int instead of Strength.
That's awesome
As a new player, I think you would have an easier time trying to think of a character that is cool and fun to play. Worry about stats second.
Okay last question about the races is halfling and lightfoot halfling different? Because I see some races have a noun before the race.
Those are subraces, variations on the main race. Like there are multiple types of elf.
Are there any races are seen as "too op" like for example the Variant Aasimar? Or is it all well balanced?
Not really a newcomer question.
How so? lol
I don't want too op I just want to learn I don't even know what an aasimar is
It really depends on what type of character you play. Usually races that get free flight (Aarackokra and Winged Tiefling) are seen as problematic.
I see, thank you!
It is all relatively well balanced. This is the first time I've ever heard Variant Aasimar be referred to as anything close to "op"
Variant Human are the closest to “OP" because of the free feat.
But guess that's gonna change in a few months.
Certainly, there are some races that optimizers favor over others, but since this is a co-op "PVE" game, you being powerful doesn't really hinder the enjoyment for other players, to an extent
Of course, of course.
Getting into game balance and stuff being "overpowered" isn't a beginner topic because it hinges on discussions of balance, mechanics, etc
It's more an #optimization topic
It annoys me that DND beyond have some sort of monopoly on the digital side of things, as someone who's new having to pay for physical books then digital versions separately is laughable, forcing me to decide which way I should play due to financials
hello
Basic rules are free
DnDBeyond does not have a monopoly on digital access to D&D content - you can buy digital D&D materials on Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and now FoundryVTT (not all books are available yet on Foundry).
Also if you buy the digital + physical bundle options from the D&D Beyond marketplace, the digital versions are discounted from $29.99 to $10
Hi everyone! I am new around here as a new player! I want to learn and play DND.
Check out this channel's pinned messages and the material in #learn-to-play! If you have more specific questions, don't be afraid to ask!
Okay!
How do I create a character for the DND?
And how do I make it so that it is integrated well on the lore of the game?
The rules linked in the pinned messages describe the process here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
As for the lore, you work that out with the DM. It's unrealistic to do that before you're part of a game/group.
i finally found a group to play with and was so excited to try my first game, was working on my character and studying up on the handbook, and the dm literally kicked me out with little to no explanation, and won’t tell me why. i’m so upset
I'm sorry that happened. The silver lining is if they would do that, they might not be a good fit to play with anyway. There are lots of groups out there, so don't give up hope!
I am sorry to hear that. I hope that you manage to find a group to play stranger.
i think it’s cause i wasn’t on my phone 24/7 maybe, i’d take time to respond to her texts. but i wanna make sure it’s not actually something i did wrong but she won’t even tell me. i do hope to find another group, maybe
Yeah I'm sure you'll find the perfect group for you
Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for people to just be removed from a game without explanation or even any fault of the removed person. Try not to dwell on it.
really? it happens often?
I didn't say that. I said it's not uncommon.
this was the first group i joined so i don’t have much to base it off of
People can act differently online thanks to the anonymity.
yea it makes sense. she removed me from the gc and roll20 and blocked me before i could even react or question
CRAZY but hopefully i’ll find a dm who doesn’t do that lol
I believe you will!
How do I contact a DM to join on a game?
Or something like that
I am really not that experience on DND related stuff.
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our LFG channels. But you can direct message a poster in #looking-for-players or use the thread attached to their LFG post to respond and express interest.
Uh hi, I'm new to DnD, I don't really know what to say here
Um, what's the best way to get started?
I know the very basics of character creation so I guess I'm looking for a game?
I really don't know what I'm doing

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
As a reminder, do not solicit or organize a game/group outside of the LFG channels - see #find-a-game for info and details on how to use those channels
Q: Has anyone run Dragons of Stormwreck Isle?
I just got it, I'm a very rusty DM and the people I'm playing with are new to the game.
The experience part is throwing me. I'm still reading through the book, but it seems like I might just level them up randomly? Like after a certain section or something.
I'm used to experience points and such, so I'm not entirely sure how different this is going to be.
For any adventure spoilery details, please use #1029833015423143957
Usually adventures will give information at the start of each section on what level the characters "should" be at before experiencing that section of the adventure.
I believe the nature of their question is how Milestone leveling works.
So I've just purchased some dungeon and dragons adventure magazines and oh my they are so cool........I got some 2d models, a map annnnd 2 sets of dice
There was an optional rule that slowly became more and more popular called Milestone Levelling. Basically, instead of accruing and calculating XP the PCs level up when they finish certain objectives or get to a dramatic point in the campaign.
So the DM doesn't has to worry about XP math and can simply decide to give them a level up whenever it's most organic. I myself never use XP nowadays.
I have a question, is DND beyond just a site for building character sheets and getting info or is it also used for things like voice chat or actual plays (maps and stuff)
It does have maps as well as adventure content and character-building, but there's no functionality for voice chat.
ah thank you, i was looking at "find players" chat and wanted to know how their method of playing was on on dnd beyond character sheets
It's not uncommon for folks playing online to use multiple platforms all at once: D&D Beyond (or similar) for character sheets and dice, Discord (or similar) for audio/video, and a virtual tabletop like Owlbear Rodeo or Roll20 for maps/tokens.
i sort of familar with roll20 since I was part of a pokemon tabletop and we used that
havent played actual dnd though
Greetings folks, I'm new to Dungeons and Dragons. I would love to play the game someday cause I got interest in the Fantasy genre. :-)
Welcome to the hobby and the server! Check out the resources in #learn-to-play and this channel's pinned messages. Don't be afraid to ask questions you have!
Dang, so it's really helpful

If you’re unsure of how to create a character sheet, i recommend going to dnd beyond’s character builder and choosing a premade character. It can be great way to study something already made to look at as you’re learning.
Hello everyone. Just joined the server. I've been playing D&D on and off for several years but have the memory of a goldfish and always forget how things work
if death saving throws are automatically failed if you are hit, if u fall unconcious mid battle whats stopping the enemies from ganging up on you?
- The DM still wanting to be friends with everyone at the table
- Otherwise, your allies protecting you
The noob urge to play as a barbarian to not annoy others with magic or whatnot
Plus easier to understand
There's nothing wrong with playing more straightforward classes!
You can still have a ton of fun being an angry Viking swinging around an axe
Hell yea i love my viking character
"Merciless House Rules" require table approval. But it normally gets changed to "0 HP = Instant death." If you haven't played one yet, I recommend it. It's definitely not your usual D&D experience and you will learn how to solve problems differently.
I don't know if I'd recommend hardcore, homebrew rule sets to folks in the DnD newcomers channel.
Let’s stick to the basic rules
Indeed - please keep to core rules and game mechanics here
Trying to take out the enemies that are still trying to kill you is more important than double tapping the ones who are already unconscious.
kind of depends on how aware enemies are of the fact someone downed is one BA and a first level spellslot from being up and someone dead-dead is a whole action and a 3rd level spell slot at best
Me and my wife are looking for a session to join every weekend. We tried making our own session but no one ever takes it seriously and gets into it like us. We're just looking for a group to have fun with and that are actually gonna be there for almost every session
my character knows Common, Sylvan, and Gnomish
