Hello ! It's my first time touching dnd, and I thought to do the default campaign with two more people that also don't know anything about the game that comes with the starter kit (Even though I still have to buy it ) I decided to take the role of dungeon mster. So, anything I should prepare beforehand ?
#learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel have some useful info and links to resources to help get you started. And welcome to the server!
Ok, thanks!
I’d love to play that campaign with you if you need someone to do it with
I have to be honest I’ve never played any form of dnd and I’m not really sure what I’m doing but I wanna get into it
Did I post that thing correct?
Please don't solicit for games/groups inside the discussion channels - it is off-topic and will be moderated. Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels.
Gotcha thanks

Okay I’ll get to researching thanks
Hey I'm new to dnd I've done things similar but barley any thing and DnD truly interest me and want to know how to play better
I’m doing mine on the app and it’s a lot easier and helpful when it comes to the ability scores. I didn’t really understand it either at first but the app kinda does it for you

I'm curious, could I make my character sexually attracted to any species?
That's between you and your DM to discuss.
Well I'm making my character and I'm not in a group yet
I was just curious if I could make my character sexually attracted to any species
"any" is quite vague...
u can make ur character anything u want as long as the group ur in is ok with it
dexterity as rogues are quick and nimble and use finesse or ranged weapons which also use dexterity
Ok, because I'm thinking about making a dark elf because I've heard that they're a good choice when it comes to being a rouge class
To build on this, it’s important to discuss with the group to make sure it doesn’t cross any lines and veils.
All races are generally good for all classes. Thanks to new character creation rules released by Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, race has much less impact on class than it used to
yeah, it’s fine to decide your character’s orientation is “pan”, or any other possibility. the degree to which you can express it in games and/or with other characters will depend on the ground rules established before the campaign begins
The dark elf does have access to invisibility which can help, but literally pick any race you vibe with and itll work out fun or good
Hey I’m new to dnd looking to try dnd preferably in a one piece world type of adventure where either each player is a different captain or all one crew
Ok so thats in #find-a-game
But remember, the more picky you are,the longer itll take you to find a dm
Lucky you,I often see one piece themed one shots pass here and there
Thank you
It’s also important to understand that the abilities from an anime will not have a one to one translation to dnd mechanics.
Best approach is to look at DnD’s built in rules and mechanics to see how close to the spirit the source material you can get.
Hi, im new to D&D and went to my first campain the other night and really enjoyed and would like to learn more and get better.
Hey!I advise you start by reading the player handbook!
It contains all of the rules and basics to learn the game
You don't need to buy the Player's Handbook, the Basic Rules is free.

Yo, so uh idk how to play lol.
Check out the resources in the message above yours
What I mean is, I have the idea on how to play and the story behind it. What I do not understand is sentient skills and characters.
Also I do not understand when a character died do they just introduce another one?
What do you mean by sentient skills and characters?
With character death, it's up to your DM how new characters are introduced. Some let you just drop right in, some will want it to be more of a narrative event.
Generally yes, if your character dies you’ll make another and it will be introduced somehow
What I mean is characters like mages or clerks or bards and elves and stuff like that
Oh, okay I thought there was more stuff than that, I know that stuff at least.
What do you mean by sentient skill
Nah, I just thought there was more stuff than that.
If you're looking for more content on how the game works, read the player handbook
Oh and is the dungeon and dragon stuff done over text or voice?
There are additional options that can be found in other D&D books. But that's the Not Free content.
Hey I got a question
D&D is either played in person or over online communications, either text or voice/video chat.
You also new to dnd ?

Yep
Depends on the DM and players you're with
How do I do a post on lookinh for a dm
You already in a campaign or wanna join mine ?
I mean I'll join yours but I need to learn how to make this character first
I’m hosting a homebrew demon slayer campaign
Demon slayer? What's that
What’s homebrew
I can also help you with that it’s actually ez once you get the hang on it
Sorry I’m new
As long as it's like a role playing I'm fine
It’s anime
Apparently my mother was a huge geek on this
The anime basically demons ravaging the world killing and eating people there’s an organization called the demon slayers that’s trying to stop the
Them*
Oh that anime with the cool animation?
I just spent time on making one
I don't think you can self promo your own campaigns here. You can post your campaign in the associated https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 channels
Oh-
@meager shard where's your thing at I'll join up
Okay folks, do not solicit or search for a group/game to join in the discussion channels. Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels
But how do you make this character?
My bad
Read the first chapter of the free basic rules as it explains, step by step, how to make a character.
Sorry I was just questioning how it all worked
First chapter?
I read that and instantly forgot won’t let it happen again
You can create a character without being a campaign, but make sure you talk to your DM about your character during what's called "Session 0." This is kind of a pre-campaign session where you discuss the content of the campaign, rules, character creation, etc
Fair enough. You can also use the DnDBeyond character tool and use it's guided approach to help you build a character.
So with that in my brain now does that mean that there is like a certain document I need to fill out?
Or is there a website I can go to?
That’s what I used
DND Beyond has a character creator tool.
Anything that doesn't require email?
But it’s like a regular character I’m a wood elf and stuff
I hate giving out my email
Just look up "D&D 5e character sheet PDF" and you can fill it out old school
Alr
How do I leave a post on looking for a dm server
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 explains how to make a post.
ermmmm hey guys blushes cutely (in head: i hope nobody thinks im weird >~<)
Wsp lukassss
Type /looking-for dm and submit. See #find-a-game for the info/details.
Oh dope I did it
So when it comes down to points what is the average amount?

So info on how to use point can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores
So 20 points?
I'd recommend just using Standard Array though.
What kind of points? Ability scores?
I just planned on being a wizard
Yes.
A level 2 wizard that's what I just planned on
With uh a interesting skill
There's no "average" amount per se. There are different methods for getting your ability scores. If you've played BG3, that's called "point buy" and is very common.
So I'm just going to put the lowest number is on my skill?
I’m not sure what you mean
Just fyi, skills ≠ abilities.
If you want to find a group to play with check out #find-a-game
Unfortunately there are many rules to D&D so it's a big ask to have someone walk you through 1 on 1. You can find a link to the free basic rules in this channel's pins or #learn-to-play . This channel's pins also contains a link to the Handbooker Helper video supplement. Don't worry about reading throroughly through all the rules, just focus on the ones about combat, character creation, and skill checks.
are there really small sessions in order to experience the basics?
Yes! There are one shot adventures that can be completed in one session of 1-4 hrs.
should I search for one in find a game? also should I create a character for a game before joining or during joining?
conceptually and point allocation wise I mean
or is it depending on campaigns?
Yes, https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 will be the best place to search
Creating a character can depend on campaign. For campaigns, they often have a session 0 where you discuss everything regarding what to expect, character creation, etc. For one shots you can usually create one in advance, but check with your DM about it before the session starts, if possible.
Sometimes, campaigns and one shots do have prewritten characters as well.

My Post above can provide you with some avenues to explore.
I am planning to buy the essentials kit and I have a question
I will be dungeon master and so can any of my players do anything and I mean absolutely ANYTHING?
For example stealing or sleeping with a npc or something like that?
No, D&D is a game of rules, mechanics, and limits.
Even with magic, spell can only do what the the texts say they can do, nothing more, nothing less.
For matters such as that you'll want to have a session zero. Which is a session where you cover expectations and establish ground rules.
While these questions don't cover everything, going over this with your group can help set the campaign up for success.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can be done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
💀 💀 💀
as a dungeon master it depends on what you allow to happen, which is almost everything in most cases and is only used to make sure the players can have fun without breaking the game. tbh its about having fun
usually a good idea is to let players do whatever, but bad choices have consequences
the rules dont have to be rigid and have every detailed chiselled into stone. as a new player your focus should be on learning the game, and then going over more advanced topics like roleplay and exploration expectation
at the end of the day you are playing a game, no one will arrest you or burn your house down if your story is too non linear or your characters are too easy to resurrect
The intent behind the session zero is to increase the likelihood of fun by discussing everyone's likes and wants for a D&D game while providing safe environment by setting boundaries.
if its their first game it should be more about learning how to play
dont forget about providing a safe environment
u right but first time players dont always know
wait really
dnd should have a story??
its all making sense
players should decide on their characters??
this is cray cray
i mean, people want different things out of a story. it's gonna be hard for a new player to actually like the game if they show up with the lost prince of elven civilization as their pc and all their friends made slapstick characters
or do you think "new players can decide the tone they enjoy before starting" means the same thing as "omg dnd should have A STORY!! and CHARACTERS!!"?
even harder to play when you dont know how to make attack or damage rolls, or understand concepts like damage resistance and bonus action utility
my point is dnds a hard game some ppl make it way harder than it needs to be
basics and gameplay first, story and character development after
not rlly u but making ppl decide on stuff that doesnt rlly matters takes away from the game when ur new
especially when you need to establish lines and veils before ever experiencing the game
what ur bringing up is valid although if its all new players they usually all gonna have a generic character
yeah definitely, i'm not saying that new players shouldn't learn the rules or get a hang of how the game works before making big decisions about how they like to play it
just adding that session zero discussions don't have to be about grilling new players on what they enjoy mechanically, the "setting expectations" can be as simple as figuring out what character they want to play and how to build them
honestly, i understand the appeal of your first sheet being your own creation, but my first one was awful cuz of lack of experience. id recommend finding a sheet online that has roughly what you want, while having the functional of being a useful character
there is no shortage of premade sheets online that work well enough to be played
also making a character functional is one of the hardest and most time consuming parts of getting into the game, so understanding how it works before building your first character isnt a bad option
just to make sure we are on the same page here i'm in no way saying that session zero should come before learning the rules of the game or that a new player should be put into a session zero and be expected to have a sheet all figured out
i understand that
hello i dont need help with understanding AC
my only suggestion is that the very first session ever should just be to try to experience. bring a premade sheet and write in your own backstory if you want one, and quickly touch up on the very basics to make sure everyone is on the same page
i spent like a half an hour learning
oh i think. maybe i've misunderstood. when i refer to session zero i mean basically a discussion, like purely figuring out expectations and if there's new players involved, gauging how much they know about the game and helping them with any questions/character creation/etc, not the first session of gameplay
no when i say you dont need a session zero i mean as long as everyone has glanced at the basic rules, and has a functioning sheet (either they did their research or got one online) they only need like 10 minutes to make sure they got everything and to start playing
expectations for a campaign should be discussed after that little bit of testing you get from a few functioning sessions, and the players can choose to do a full campaign after they know what its about. this should also help give players a confidence boost, which goes a long way when youre learning
i see, i do agree with that, i don't think session zero has to be incredibly complicated. still, i think there's value in sitting down with a group and checking that they have, as you said, glanced at the basic rules/made a functional sheet, so that if anyone's confused or missing something, it can be addressed right away before actual play starts - and i'd consider that a session zero, but i guess at that point it's semantics about what does and doesn't count as one
are half-elves always elf and human when playing a character?
By default they are.
I’m trying to create a character sheet for a half elf sorcerer. I’ve played before but I’ve never made a character sheet before since when I played someone had made one for me. Can someone help? I’m confused lol
what part are you having problems with? and are you using ddb for your sheet?
I have basically the top of the character sheet set up class, level, race, background etc and I just finished rolling stuff. It’s mostly the bonuses I’m having an issue with
Are you using D&D Beyond or no
No
I'd recommend making your character sheet there. It'll calculate a lot of things automatically. You can still print a PDF of the sheet as well
Ahhh good to know! Thanks a lot :DDD
If you're still interested in how bonuses etc are calculated, the PHB has a section on it. But yeah, D&D Beyond character creator is the go to
Ok perfect! Thank you so much I really appreciate it
Np!
for disguise self does my voice stay the same?
no, the only thing that changes is your appearance
Hello hello, new-ish to the game and looking for a group to do digital games
#find-a-game can help you out
o7
Are Drows and Dark elves the same creature?
Drow and Dark Elf are different names for the same group of elves, yeah
Alright
the amount of spells u can copy into your spellbook and the spell slots u have are unrelated right ?
the number of spells in your spell slot are seperate from spell slots, but there isn't a limit on spells you can copy in
you simply only get a set amount of spells automatically
alr thanks man
Keep in mind that your prepared spells are different from your known spells for wizards
Known spells are anything in a spell book, prepared spells are selected at the end of a long rest/at the start of a day (I don’t remember which, sorry) and you have a set amount of spells that can be prepared at a time based on your level, and spell slots are how many can be cast without regaining them
Yeah. You “know” (have in your spellbook) 6 + 2 for every level after 1st, and each day you prepare level + int mod from your known spells
It’s at the end of a long rest that you prepare
Thanks, I’ve only played wizards in oneshots before
You can know more than the base though, if you spend time and gold copying from another spell book or from a spell scroll
Yeah
Hi
Hello
I’m new do you know how I can join a DnD game?
You can use our #find-a-game channels as one option
Have you read the DnD basic rules?
Yes
yeah i read up on that. thanks
Hello! A newcomer to the world of DnD.
I have not been interested in DnD before for a lot of reasons; however, I met a coworker who introduced me to its concept and I WAS INTRIGUED.
I have done my research and there’s so many things to learn. From official lore to “homebrew.” Rules in characters, equipments, spells, monsters, classes, and more. (EXCITING)
I was hoping to get a few friends already whom I can talk to and ask questions regarding more resources and their personal experiences with DnD (and possibly starting my first adventure with).
So yes, HIT ME UP PLS!
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

does anyone have an easy way to explain the difference between wisdom and intelligence, and perception and investigation? was DMing for the first time the other day, got quite confused on which to use 😅
Perception is seeing things generally, investigation is up close and deducing meaning
So noticing a knife vs figuring out it was used to kill someone
Wisdom is street smarts, intelligence is book smarts
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit
Wisdom is knowing a tomatos would be a poor addition to a fruit salad
oooh, makes sense - thanks so much guys!
All good!
np!
Okay so uh... help please 😰 I'm REALLY new and so confused
We have #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel. Give those some attention and read through things. Then if you have specific questions about game rules/mechanics you can ask here or use #channel-guide to find the most appropriate channel for a D&D topic.
But do give those resources a look
oh, thank you!
Check out Critical Roll's Handbook Helper videos as they break some of the core rules and mechanics (and character stuff) down into fun digestible videos.
And don't feel like you got to memorize it all.
But getting a feel for the core mechanics and rules can help you as you play D&D versus having the rest of your group have to pause gameplay to explain things to you. While the community generally loves having new players, they especially enjoy those who have spent time and effort reading and learning some of the core rules.
I understand, thanks for the heads up :D
Is darkvision a skill? (I've played before but it was a few years ago and I've forgotten a lot haha)
Darkvision is a racial/species attributes (or magical effect) that allows a creature to see shades of gray in dark/dim areas.
I see! I'm assuming I list it on a character sheet, but where, exactly?
Should be under the "senses" section
features and traits, maybe? I can post a picture of the sheet if that helps :D
Oh, that might be visual
you can't post pictures here, but if you have a shareable link that'd work
oh I could put it in character discussion? Or would that be off topic?
No most channels do not have image embed permissions - you could use a image/file sharing service and link to it that way. Make sure to follow server rules and etiquite when posting links (make sure to provide text context for what the link is)
But if you're using DnDBeyond you can link to the sheet and if it's publicly viewable, folks can see the embed and get to the sheet.
I wasn't using the dnd beyond sheet because the race I chose wasn't available (my friend had a campaign idea and gave us some options for races and I chose one that I thought looked fun to play)
I'll see if I can put it in a doc
If you're filling out the official 5e PDF given by WotC (as opposed to the other, also official PDF generated by D&DBeyond), you'd put your senses under "features & traits" or "additional features & traits"
Hey I’m not a newcomer but can someone explain combat to me like I’m a newbie? I can’t remember how it works (and I’m supposed to be teaching newbies how to do combat wish me luck lmao)
at the start of combat everyone rolls a dexterity check called initiative to determine who goes first. highest number goes first and then descending. every round each creature has an action a bonus action a reaction and movement. theyre free to determine how they want to spend that.
Thank you! Do you mind also explaining the dice? Like what to roll (idk how to describe it lol), that part kinda confuses me because I’ve been told different stuff and I want to get it right for my players
honestly id suggest reading the rules

Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
Does an explorers pack have to be a backpack or do you reckon it could fit in a different type of bag?
Flavor (e.g. how to describe things) is free.
Mechanics are not.
You could describe your explorer's pack as any assortment of pouches and bags to your hearts desire - but mechanically it's a pack of some sort for holding things.
aa, i need help with managing notes for my dnd campaign tomorrow as a first time dm
i have many ideas but i dont know what to write
Are you running a pre-written module or something you've come up with yourself?
something ive coem up with
I'd probably look at laying it out as scenes or locations, depending on what kind of flow your adventure has. Notes as to which NPCs start where, details about the locations and the events that could occur to help or hinder the party.
Also please take DM questions to #dm-discussion - let's leave this channel open for new to D&D folks to get help with learning the core game rules and mechanics.
when it says characters have to make a saving throw against this spell under a spell description , how do u determine the dc of said check
The creatures spell save DC should be noted in it's statblock. You would use that to determine the DC.
got it ,thanks
Hello i am new here. I created a character and i have no idea what to do next.
Have you read the Basic Rules to understand the fundamentals of the game?
Yes
Then see the bot post for going about finding a group to play with!

Is there a place with basic rules which I can read? I’ve created a character and I’ll be honest I probably won’t try it out but I have a little interest so the rules would be interesting

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
God im miserable, no matter how much i read about ability scores i dont understand how to give them to my character
Like whats 17 (+3) what does that mean
17 is the score itself. The highest a score can go is 20 without extra items or class features, so 17 is fairly high.
The +3 is the modifier, which is based on the score. A 10 gives you a modifier of +0, a 12 gives you a modifier of +1, etc, increasing every time you increase your score by 2.
The modifier is the number that's added to your relevant rolls
I recommend you watch Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos on Youtube. This episode is on Ability Scores:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoV5iM7peOg
i dont understand ability checks and skills, my group is completely new to dnd and im the only one who can be the dm, i kinda get the combat basics now but we dont really understand how the exploring and how you do "checks" , we're quite confused
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
thanks, i'll go check it out now
Ability check rolls like Perception or Stealth is what the DM asks for. The player doesn't decide what to roll for.
PC: "I want to try to sneak around those two town guards and into that alley."
DM: "Okay, roll a Dexterity Stealth check please."
[DM will see if the Stealth roll meets or beats the guards' Passive Perception of 11, if it does the PC successfully sneaks past the guards]
As for exploration, in a dungeon (it's a term for basically any indoor structure, such as a castle, sewers, dragon's lair, or a literal dungeon) the players tell the DM where their characters will go and the DM will reveal on the map what the PCs see.
it's my first time DMing with a slight knowledge and one of my party is a slime race 😭
As DM you have final approval of the PCs.
Yeyseysyes, their pc is inspired by rimuru, the slime. I know that'll be powerful and I'm beginning to see OP actions like him going for absorbing a metal and adding it up to his AC 😭😭😭
I need some help to nerf him
There's already a slime race called plasmoid
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/sais/aag/character-options#Plasmoid
Thank you!
Hmmm...maybe it could start rusting inside his body and cause some kind of debuff?
You're not obligated to use ANY homebrew from players. (I don't recommend you do if you're a new DM because you lack the experience to know what's balanced)
Don't homebrew something to try to balance an imbalanced homebrew when you're a new DM. You're just going to make things worse. Stick to the official stuff for now.
Valid point, totally forgot plasmoids existed before you linked them lol
is there a whole page I could read and learn way more for DMS and PCs?
Head to #dm-discussion for more DMing advice. This channel is more for helping new players learn the game and its rules.
The basic rules has all the info you need for the core mechanics, too
Part 4 of the free Basic Rules is for the DM.
btw, someone asked me if there's a Cat-Human like race in d&d, is there any?
There are (technically) two! Tabaxi and Leonin, the latter being from Mythic Odysseys of Theros
Ask your DM if they allow those in their campaign setting.
I'll go read and make a character sheet for them now, thank you for your guidances!!!
Where can i find begginer friendly campaigns that are suitable for somone lets say 13 years old becuse every campaign i look at is either for adults only or not beginer friendly.
i think there’s “peril in pinebrook” that is meant to be a very simple introductory adventure, and dragon of icespire peak/lost mines of phandelver are also pretty popular as beginner campaigns
yes thank you but i dont have a dm and i have tried playing dnd by myself but it just isnt fun.
i see, in that case you could try searching #looking-for-players to see if anyone has a game that is new player friendly
ok thanks a lot.
Hello, I was wondering if I could get some feedback on my first character https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/cronovore576_126367119.pdf
If you're looking for people to review your character sheet, check out #character-discussion !
Ok, thanks
D&D is a group collaborative game so it's not designed nor geared for solo play.
I’m like completely new to dnd, where do I start?

yeah i found that out
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Great, thank you
ok
I recommend you check out your local hobby store, library, or school club for in-person games. You're more likely to find games for minors.
I would recommend looking around for a local youth D&D programs.
Best places to search are your libraries, game shops, and clubs.
problem is where im from dnd isnt popular so there arent any places nowere near me where i could play dnd
If online is your only option then you have to keep looking and cast your net further out than just this server's LFG channels.
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online.
thanks
hi guys! im new here and never played dnd before. anyone wanna chat and talk?
That's what we're here for! Have you read through the basic rules before?
i did but i would not be as confortable to jump in the game right away
im also looking for a group that would be willing to play with me

thanks!
What to do when u are playing using the starter set with less than 4 players ?...2 players
Is that including DM?
No 2 + dm
Ah, I mean you should be good imo, if the DM wants they could give a sidekick or two just to add some to the numbers
Just scale down the threats to help your party
You can still run a game with one DM and two players.
You'll have to adjust combat encounter and see how much faster the pacing becomes but it's perfectly doable.
Giving them a couple of guards maybe just so they aren't outnumbered could work
Yup, dragon of icespire peak has sidekicks to adventure along with players.
If you don't want to do that, then you could always go to your local gamestore and see if anyone else wants to join
You can also check if that local tabletop game store also hosts dnd nights where a DM is provided.
I prefer to simply adjust stuff and play with the 2 players (siblings)
Ah, I would recommend adding a side kick or two for balance
- we are all completely new....so i prefer to not add extra stuff we barley know the normal rules
So if there is anyway to make the challenges easier..i would prefer that
Great, you can do that.
What should i change though ?
reduce the number of enemies mostly, especially if there are swarms of more than 5+
That's where you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either you have not enough players and everything has to be retuned by you, or you have sidekicks and your players have more work
What is a sidekick 🙂
As hira suggested, lower the number of enemies your players have to face.
In D&D, you have what's called the actions economy:
Typically the side with the most turns wins.
If enemies and players have the same number of turns, then a combat encounter should be fairly balance.
There are other things to consider of course but you can start with that.
also, i don't remember the specific skill based challenges in the starter kit but if there's any point that is like "in order to progress this dungeon you MUST succeed this DC 15 perception check to identify this secret door" you may also want to change that and either come up with an alternative solution or nudge your players to build characters with certain challenges in mind
At this point, we should move things to #dm-discussion
Cool i will keep that in mind 🤔
I dont think so..because i am completely new as player and a dm
Btw..if i am checking something and i failed the check..can i or another player try again 🤔
While true, the questions and answers have been focused on the DM side of things.
So what better place to get DM advice than from a channel populated by DMs?
another player could try, but usually each character only gets to attempt once
Oh so what is keeping any party from trying something 4 times
Like reading an ancient language on a wall
You, the DM, are! As the DM, you have the jurisdiction to say "nope, you couldn't understand it the first time, so you won't understand it now."
Remember: your players don't say when they roll for an ability check, you do.
what about one on one ? dm and pc
I wouldn't really recommend it, it is really easy to die because of the lack of other members
The ideal number of players is 3 to 5 (most adventures are optimized/designed for four PCs). One DM and one player is doable but it requires more balancing on the DM's side, which may having sidekicks to fill in the missing roles in a party.
i see
I've had one-shots for two PCs when they were meant for four PCs. I had to scale combat encounters down as a result.
Interestingly enough, Ginny Di released a video on the subject not too long ago.
You can learn about her experience of attempting to do a duet style play here: https://youtu.be/5WH0yEY5uo8
yeah ive been trying to DM for my little brother . we did a test run, it was fun but i definitely struggled with encounter balance
thanks i'll check it out
would having the player play more than one character work well. too complicated perhaps ?
Depends on the player and whether they're piloting two (or more) full PCs or one PC and a bunch of sidekicks.
I personally don't know, if I had to guess it would depend on a player's ability to juggle multiple things at once.
Hey me and my friends want to start playing dnd but none of us know how to play, we’re trying to do it online.

^ That article gives a good overview of the logistics for playing online. The bot post below has the rules on how to play. We also have #learn-to-play!
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.

Hi i just joined any suggestion to where to start?
#learn-to-play and check the pinned messages here in this channel. Then if you have any specific questions feel free to ask here (or use #channel-guide to find the most approrpiate channel for a particular topic)
And welcome to the server!
I just made my first character using dnd beyond and i chose a tiefling as my race and it didn't count my tiefling ability scores is that a glitch or am i missing something
I can send my character if you want
Yo same here
Question for anyone who can help me out, I'm a new player, looking to play my very first campaign/one-shot, I posted in the looking for DM channel, but can anyone recommend other places to look for groups to join? (I need to get these character ideas out of my head somehow)
I've got a guide full of options to investigate. Good luck and happy adventuring!
I just want a duergar artificer and is it imposible?
That's certainly possible! Any race can be played with any class.
Ok
Very nice thank you, I wasn't expecting a formal report and guide but it's very good!
I don't know where to start or what to do i really need help
Have you looked at the rules and/or #learn-to-play?
Its says to make character whats the easy way or normal way to do it
Hey everyone!! My name is Paige I’m looking to start playing dnd but don’t know where to start or how to play it would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me

Thank you!!!
I can't even make a character sheet😑
What are you trying to do it on? where do you need help?
I don't know ☹️
Have you read the free Basic Rules?
hey I just saw we are supossed to post an ad, where and how
Do New DM questions/advice go here or is this just for New Players and I should head to dm-discussion?
Check #find-a-game and read the instructions there.
Head to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
They r confusing to me
The first chapter of the rules is a step by step example on building a character - would recommend reading that and also check out the Handbook Helper videos from Critical Roll as it helps breaks some of the rules down into nice digetible videos.

You could also use DnDBeyond's character sheet tool as they have a a "beginner" path approach that can help too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
If you have specific questions we can help answer them but unfortunately many of us don't have time/bandwidth to teach folks D&D one on one.
Well depends mostly on how old are u
Check #find-a-game
Look up a quick YouTube tutorial
You can find a template for a sheet and print it off or use an online template
Hi!
I'm interested in DnD but I can't find any useful info about it. Where can I get started?
Does anyone know how to find a group that can be played online?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I advise to look up some youtube videos about the basics
So I'm a DM and I built an entire world just to find out my players just want to use the generic campaigns
sent you a dm if youre looking to join a group, I can walk you through character creation
Check https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 on how to find games to join!
I’m also new to D&D I’ve played only once I think but I need a bit more help in understanding how to play or even seeing if there’s a way to play online with people
The pinned messages and #learn-to-play have lots of info. You might also check out the learn-to-play sessions during the virtual weekends in the server’s Events tab.
In any channel where you are able to type, type /looking. You should see a list of options pop up; select the appropriate channel for where you want your ad to appear. Hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post in the channel you selected.
When you type “/looking,” you should see a list of options. Choose one of them.
Integrate elements of your homebrew into the generic campaign, or ask players how they feel about playing a homebrew world.
Sometimes that just happens. It's good that you communicated and found out the group issue early on versus right before a game. See if you can reach some sort of compromise (i.e. running an official 5e setting w/ some homebrew elements mixed in). If not, and you'd much rather DM inside your HB setting, there's no shame in finding a different group.
Is it too ambitious to try a caster for my first character?
Maybe not like a full caster but I’m not super into the fighter or the monk (the barbarians pretty cool)
There's definetly more to keep in mind as a caster than as a non-caster, but i wouldn't say it's impossible. It's just about how much you trust your own management and resource-tracking skills
So I'm new to Dungeons and Dragons and one thing has me confused. If Im a Fighter that has a longsword that deals 1d6 slashing damage at level 1. If I max out my stats, would I ever increase in damage by a significatn amount other than my Ability modifier? Woudlnt my permanent maximum damage be 6 (Damage roll) + 10 (Modifier)=16
Fighters get abilities such as extra attack (whenever you attack, you can attack again) and action surge (get to take another action, thus doubling your attacks if you choose to do that). You also might might get magic items, which could have other effects or just increase damage.
So excluding those things. JUst increasing my raw stats wouldnt make me deal more damage?
You add your strength modifier to damage rolls with longswords
Doesnt thatjust add 10?
Excluding some magic items, the highest you'll likely be able to get in stats is 20, which is a +5
I thought it was a +10. SO if i didnt get any magical item, and didnt get any skills or features and just upgraded my strength stat. I would only do 11 damage maximum?
You get your features as you level up, every fighter gets them
You also get abilities with your subclass which might have to do with dealing more damage
I see.
You get Action surge at level 2 and your first extra attack at level 5
There's also critical hits, where if you roll a 20 you roll double the dice
I also don't believe a longsword is 1d6, they're actually 1d8 or 1d10 if you use two hands
So, using the longsword example, you could theoretically deal 25 damage with one attack if you rolled a critical hit and had a 20 in your strength
And than i could action surge?
At 2nd level you get your action surge ability
I should really look at these abilities
Oh, there's also fighting styles. You could take Dueling and get a flat +2 to damage rolls when using one-hand to hold a weapon
oH
The champion subclass for fighters (you can choose your subclass at third level) lets you crit on a 19 and a 20
I shoudl really look at these features for a class build. Since I dont wanna do magic
I suggest you read the Basic Rules, or at least Chapter 1, the relevant parts of Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 7, and Chapter 9. You can also read about the Fighter class specifically here
Fither,barb,rouge are mostly non caster
Fighters, Barbarians, Rogues, and Monks are the 4 martial classes, yes. They don't have spellcasting (with the exception of the Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster subclasses for Fighters and Rogues, respectively)
Paladins and Rangers can also be excellent for getting introduced to spellcasting since they get their spellcasting a slower pace than others and still have martial-focused abilities
And Clerics are, I've been told, the easiest of the spellcasters to play when you're starting out
Aight. Whats a good class if im more of the healer type
That would be Clerics, they're the healer class
im slow for that. Alright, that could be my first build for spell casting. ARe they atleast somewhat able to save the day when all their teamates die to the big bad?
All classes are equally viable, they just have their different specialties.
A barbarian is not a better healer than a cleric
Ah, you meant at healing
Clerics get access to the spell Revivify at 5th level, which lets you revive someone if they've died within the last minute and you have the right material ready
There's also the spell Gentle Repose (Clerics get that at 3rd level) which basically extends the how-long-you-have-to-revive-someone timer by 10 days
oh W
i dont wanna be a pure healer though, so is there anything offensive
70% healer
Clerics start with some weapons, yep! They also have some anti-undead abilities
How does magic initiate work and do most DMs do feats or are they less common than they seem
I was thinking about doing a failed wizard turned barbarian/warlock/fighter/whatever with a magic initiate wizard feat but I’m not sure how that’d play/ if it’d even fly in a real game
ty
for the help
I've personally never seen a DM that doesn't use feats. They might ban some feats, but they're almost universally used. Magic Initiate is in the Player's Handbook and lets you pick two cantrips and one 1st-level spell from a singular class. You can cast the cantrips as much as you want and the spell once per long rest.
Variant Humans (and Custom Lineage, I think?) are the only way to start with a feat, unless you're starting at a higher level
I was gonna play a variant human, hard to relate to the other races
Don't forget that boosting your weapons ability score also boosts your chance of landing an attack, further increasing your overall damage output
As well as most weapon user classes getting more than 1 attack as you level up, and abilities that boost damage
Paladins are a good example of weapon users that can also heal. You could also choose a more weapon-focused subclass of cleric and choose a couple healing spells to keep in your toolbox
Is ranger really THAT bad?
nope
I was kind of hoping for a more detailed argument as to why not
I was considering a ranger but I heard they’re not viable
It's a dated meme, not a sound argument
That would also be far beyond the scope of this channel
Hello everyone I am extremely new to all this but I have always been interested does anyone have any advice for starting out
if you look at the pinned mesaages they can help you out
Thank you
Barbarian is the right way to go for sure
barb is good for newer players but the easiest in my eyes (and many others) is fighter
Fighter can be quite complicated
It’s as simple as it gets
Barbarian seems close to my play style in most rpg video games however I don't know how well it will translate to dnd
some of the subclasses yes but champion is easy to learn and its pretty good
As simple as it gets? I seriously hope that's a joke. I run Battlemaster
I mean the simplest fighter is easier than the simplest wizard
I’m sure your fighter is wicked
if they rage and deal big damage yep thats barb in dnd
Generally fighter is the most approachable class
Let's put it this way... my lvl 20 fighter gets 8, 9 attacks a round - casts spells, buffs the entire party, has numerous moves, complicated weapons with special effects and despite not even being optimized is tactically very flexible
but thats at level 20
Yup that sounds about my play style. Because we'll my small attempt at carful planning failed time to hit with anger and big bonk
Let's keep things newcomer focussed folks
newer players dont start the game at that level
sorry
Many D&D campaigns never get to level 20
Fighter is even by level 5 fairly complicated... its more numbers then I care to admit
And I don't think level 20 characters is something folks just starting out learning the game should worry about
Druids and Paladins are really cool barb alternatives if you want to try some casting once you’ve got the game down a bit
Druid can be really daunting though
Paladin is fun, great RP options!
paladins are just holy barbs with a moral code
yoga barbs
And spells. And smites. And AoE Buffs
This is a lot of character chatter - the channel should be more about core game rules and mechanics.
Please use #character-discussion to dive into character builds and ideas.
To make my point more simple - do not be concerned with 'complexity' - find something you will enjoy playing at the table and something you understand. A wizard who doesn't get spell access (except for those at lvl up) is less 'complex' - ask your DM what kind of game they run and try to find something you like and won't mind playing for months. Due to not understanding DnD I ended up a a Bard who didn't play music for my first character
I do have a general question about how backstory effects a character
In many ways
There’s the roleplay aspect of course
Your origin actually changes quite a bit
Your proficiencies and what you get at the start
RP aspect, choices during certain instances, etc.
they add different starting items (sometimes), tool proficiencies, and lore that you could use a rp materiel
Like one PC can choose to run away when it becomes too dangerous, but a righteous Paladin may choose to die in battle
Those kinds of things
Background offers mechanical sheet options, but many of them are flavor for your RP and little more. Feat-giving backgrounds by in large are extremely simple and flexible - other ones intend that you have a very specific niche or origin that shapes core parts of your character - but using them is up to you.
Your background is affected by your backstory as well, you wouldn't have a thief be an acolyte, or a pirate be a soldier
welll you could say that the thief stole something for the cult
You could - and can. Your backstory is where you came from - not what you are today. While it is simple to continue from your background it is not requirement - more interesting options come up from that. Say an acolyte who stole important scrolls and is on the run ever since.
its all up to you in the end
If we're talking the backstory character option, that is usually a mechanical summarization of your character's life before entering the adventure. It'll give some proficiencies, a special ability, and sometimes items.
If we're talking about the more detailed narrative backstory you may give your character, that depends. The typical backstory defines your key character traits and their reason for adventuring. It may also establish NPCs or factions your character has a relaitonship to (e.g. your character's best friend or the city guard). How your DM implements that into the campaign is dependent on the DM. Sometimes DMs like to tie characters' backstories into the plot/world of the campaign, while in other campaigns your backstory may never be relevant.
Ok thank you
Backstories largely irrelevant to DMs when it comes to West March - for your RP use really in establishing your character. If you have a tight-knit steady table with an experienced DM who likes working with you, backstory becomes quests in the campaign frequently. Though you should ask 'can we work my backstory into this with say someone from my past appearing to help or hinder us?' Many DMs like ideas when the danger is not their own doing lol
That's one way too, didn't think about that
all backgrounds can go back onto what your PC is
For beginners which I guess leveling system would you advise going with because I have heard of milestone and basic xp based
That is your DM who decides, not you. 🙂
Oh ok
most dms ive seen do milestone
Milestone is leveling based on the story or module being run by the DM - it is basically a power throttle
xp hurts my brain
My group does regular XP - because quests and such are not participated in by a set party (We do West March)
for west marchs its better because thats a rpg in ttrpg format
I like XP more because it’s more tactile and you can tell vaguely when you’re going to level up, but milestones are so much easier for everyone involved
but yeah dm choice
What mechanic does constitution operate as
Surprisingly no skill - but its critical for your HP and concentration if you are a spellcaster
health mainly i think (idk myself to much
Your health and a lot of your saving throws
i just know that con is good and should always be high
never have a negative mod in CON
unless you want to cosplay the stereotypical wizard
Because that is about the most common thing outside of dexter saving throw
Mine you all I'm great full for all this information but I guess to help and prevent 101 basic questions what are the effects of the core stats
thats fine
this is dnd afterall
the game with way too much stuff for newer player to understand
They’re pretty self-explanatory, where they get more niche is which classes they apply to
Your key stats are listed in the class summaries, but just remember CON is very important. I almost always drop an ASI/Feat on getting CON proficiency if I am a spellcaster - as breaking concentration will ruin your day on a lot of key spells
You can kinda figure out what skill they apply to through guesswork
On your Beyond sheet it tells you which skill is affected by what stat.
When in doubt, I like the tomato stat mantra:
STR: How far you can throw a tomato
DEX: How well you can throw a tomato at a target 50m away
CON: How well you can eat a rotten tomato and not get sick
INT: Knowing tomato is a fruit
WIS: Knowing tomatoes would be a poor addition to a fruit salad
CHA: Being able to sell a tomato-based fruit salad
Ha. Tomato is veggie
It both 😎
What if it’s neither
Consumed as a veggie, biologically a fruit.. yes yes that was the joke
DnD mechanics make a lot of sense for the most part. Its a bit of a learning curve, but all the tools and help now make it much easier than just pen and papering it all
Might need that on a poster or a mug or something
DEX is more important in my experience for its AC boost and Dex Saves which I think about 70% of damaging spells use as their saves
Is standard array or roll for stats better or does the dm decide on that
DM decides
I mean this literally - the DM decides everything about the game. They give you the options and you pick from them. Some restrict classes, or even multi-classing options. And often for good reason - some builds just make you a demi-god
DEX ist how well you can dodge a tomato
And throw - ranged attacks are DEX, and finesse weapons
by that logic strength is also how many tomatoes you can lift — I wouldn’t overthink it
Ok well I feel like I am definitely going to fall face first into mud but might as well rip that bandaid off and try and find a group to play with
hell yeah man
good luck
Just say you are new and someone will help 🙂 Its not that scary, just don't try reading the adventure/campaign books or you will ruin the game for yourself. The Player Handbook and what your DM gives you as options is all you need
Ok thank you all for the help
Oh, one more bit of advice - when it comes to RPing - make sure you take an active part and describe what you want to do. Your DM will tell you when to roll and what to roll. Evil characters are bad for parties - and no one likes a loner
Ok I'll be sure to get into character as best I can
make sure to make your character the way you want
you can have a smart barb if you want in rp
Flavor can make or break it
If you care about stats influencing your character - 10 is normal, 20 is peak of human ability. A Barbarian with a 9 or 8 in intelligence is at worst Forrest Gump, while still saving the world
If you want a smart Barb but not to invest points into INT for just rp
INT can be flavored as specific to certain checks, not overall smarts
He's smart but he's not good at INT based mechanics stuff
like history and other things
yeah
Mani the gladiator has Intelligence 8. He's quick-witted, but his knowledge of the world outside the arena is lacking.
Oh my newest barb - an Owlin has 8 in STR but 14 in WIS and INT - College-going Barb. Wouldn't make any sense to have a sterotypical Barbarian. Proficent in Arcana, Animal Handling, Nature, Perception and Stealth at lvl 1. - You are definately free to do what you want and play how you want, I just find it fun when you get an interesting stat roll and need to get a creative and fun character - not a single good stat I liked except DEX. Thankfully I fly.
yo i put up a looking for dm form or whatever and its gotten pretty buried, do i make another or just wait?
You wait, there is a once-per-7-days post limit
After that time, your post will be deleted and you can post again
It's all explained in #find-a-game
thanks
I've heard of DND before but never actually played it or even made a character. Is there any easy way to start solo?
honestly what I’m doing rn is choosing a class, race, and background.
Classes - Fighters, Barbarians, Druids etc.
Races - Human, Dragonborn, Half-Orc etc.
Backgrounds are what I’m trying to figure out tho.
Not exactly, it's a cooperative team game usually aimed for three to six people. However, you can get a look at how it might play with the demo and the Basic Rules are free. The links to follow will also have a number of quick videos to help you get started.
?new
Huh, Dyno isn't playing. Let me see...
#learn-to-play , try there.
Thank you, is the old spreadsheet needed?
You don't typically need a spreadsheet. Here's a link that has the demo in it: #dnd-newcomers message
Thank you (I hate reading but I'll try my best)
I asked if I could join in on a campaign in #looking-for-players but how does it work? Do we do the campaign in the thread or what
if you messaged in it and dm says yes to you joining most times they will invite you to a group chat or a server for it
Oh thanks it hasn't started yet so I'm still waiting
thats all good
do i have use dnd beyond or someting to join in a campain
You have to use D&D Beyond to join a D&D Beyond campaign, but if your DM isn't using DDB, you don't have to use it
ok

How do i play d&d at all
Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the basic rules! The bot doesn't appear to be working at the moment, but you can find a bunch of useful links in the pinned messages on this channel. The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
Thanks will do
This is the link post
I have a question about DND Beyond and the lack of content for my character, but I'm not sure where to ask?
Ask your question here and I'll point you in the right direction if it's more appropriate for another channel
The Basic Rules only offer certain content for free. The rest you'd need access to, either by purchasing the books or being in a campaign with someone who owns the books and has content-sharing enabled.
If you're wondering why there are so few options for subclasses or feats on D&D Beyond, that is because the only content that is available for free on that site/app is the content from the basic rules, which only includes 1 subclass for each class and 1 feat. To get access to the other character options, you will need to purchase the sourcebook on their website, or play in a campaign that has content sharing, or use the site's homebrew tools to recreate content that you own from other sources
Okay...so we're tracking our characters in DND but playing in real life....it is only giving one option for things like picking a domain or in the case of my barbarian only giving one choice at level 3 primal choice
We physically have books, so everyone has to buy the books through the app? Or will it work if our DM buys the book
You don't need digital books if you're playing in person.
Buying the book physically doesn't give you digital access. That is purchased separately. But as Colossus mentioned, someone could make the content on D&D Beyond, but that's a manual process.
Content sharing is possible, but it requires at least 1 person in your party to have a Master Tier subscription to D&D Beyond.
Ok so I have a subscription which means if I purchase it I can share it with the whole party?
But we're tracking our characters in the app instead of on paper
Do you have a Hero tier subscription or a Master tier subscription?
Master
Ok, so then content sharing will work for you. You don't have to be the one to buy the book though
Anyone in your party can buy it, and everyone will have access to it
Okay ....thanks for the help
how does one begin dnd
Take a look at the Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules), maybe pick a race and a class and put together a starting character. Check out the sections on ability scores, combat and spellcasting. Then look for a game!
I created a character on dnd beyond if thats okay?
It's a start. You can share that in #character-discussion if you want some feedback. #looking-for-players has listings of games looking for players, or there's LFG on Reddit, Roll20 and other places to find a group to play with. The process can take time so patience is advised.
Would using DND and beyond to make a character be a good idea?
A lot of folks find it helpful!
Hi, hello. I am looking to find a DnD party to start with. I’m potentially starting a new job but I’m looking for something to fill my free time as a hobby
Read through #find-a-game to start your search!
#looking-for-players and #looking-for-dm are good places to look as well
Hi I have never done this and would like to find a DnD party to start with and I’m hopping that this can be a new hobby
Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels to find a group/game.
Also check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel.
Anyone here a dragon descendant? ✋
Hello
I don’t understand what you mean. Are you referring to Dragonborns or Draconic Bloodline sorcerers?
Yeah draconic bloodline
Then yeah. That’s a very popular subclass. I’ve played one in the past. Did you have any questions on it?
I’m wondering where black dragon bloodlines are ranked in terms of strength compared to other chromatic dragon bloodlines
Well, to give you a very brief answer, acid damage is not super strong in general, so gaining resistance to it is not a very strong effect. But questions of power level should generally be asked in the #optimization channel. This channel is more for explaining how things work, like the basics of the game
How do I know if a campaign in #looking-for-players has already started and I didnt get in cuz I've replied at 1 pm GMT+2 and haven't gotten a response yet
You don't, but assuming you mean 1pm today, that's what, 6 hours ago?
You need to have a bit more patience than that
Ya sometimes gms don't respond till the next day even
The campaigns in #looking-for-players are not official or managed by the server in any way. It’s just a place for normal users to post their own games. There’s no way to know anything about them except talking to the person running it. But Davyd is right. That’s a very normal thing, for it to take a long time to get a response.
I respond relatively fast while actively looking but that's just me
I'm as new as it gets so yea I have been in 0 campaigns and just wanted to know if it was normal thanks for responding
Putting together a campaign takes a long time
This is more #dm-discussion than a “starting out with the game” question!
so im not really a newcomer, but im new to playing a ranger, and Indigo (character) is from a feywilds/magic forest type environment, and i was wondering what a good favored enemy might be? i was thinking fiends or aberrations
#character-discussion is probably a better place for that question
okay, thankyou
how does ac work on enimies
like, how its determined?
Each creature statblock has an AC that represents how hard they are to hit (armor, dexterity, and other factors). When trying to hit them, you need to have an attack roll plus it's modifiers and bonuses that meet or beat the target's Armor Class.
like yes
Base AC is calculated as 10 + dexterity modifier
i dont understand
usually, monster AC is calculated the same as player AC.
sometime you will read something like natural armor, in which case the number is whatever the designers wanted it to
so a bandit with leather armor and 16 dex might have 14 AC, same as player with that getup.
so for example a nothic has a ac of 15 how does this effect my players damage hgim or does it not
if a PC makes an attack roll, the final result (d20+modifiers) needs to be 15 or higher to hit
You only roll damage if you hit the target (meet or beat the AC number).
Correct.
yes, the attack is a miss and there is no damage
thanks made it alot easier for me . first time dming so struggling a bit hahahah

Hellooo everyone I'm not a new comer but I am a returning player trying to remember somethings
How many feats do you get per level
You can optionally get a feat instead of an ASI whenever your class gives you one. Two races, the Variant Human and Custom Lineage, let you start with a feat
You get to choose a feat instead of an ability score increase when specified.
Some backgrounds also give you a specific feat
Okay so my character is a half elf fighter
I start with the three feats for being a halfelf
When would I get more
I think you might be getting feats confused with racial features
Oh
Your race gives you racial features, and you can also get class features
A Feat is a separate mechanic
Skills are stuff like Acrobatics, Stealth, Perception, etc.
I played Pathfinder but never actually dnd so I might be a little confused
I suggest you read the Basic Rules, or at least Chapter 1, the relevant parts of Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 7, and Chapter 9. You can also read about the Fighter class specifically here
Pathfinder and D&D are different
Ik
You said you're a return player though?
did you perhaps come from 3rd edition or 3.5e?
Okay so
For ppl that don't have a whole handbook (myself) like ik read the online resources and create character
But is it better to learn all the rules and stuff first or just start playing and go from there

For someone who is still kinda new to things this will defs help
From a Game Master’s perspective it helps when a player takes the time to learn the basics on their own. Main reason, it requires time and work to prepare an adventure for players. So anything that can decrease a GM’s workload helps.
@tropic field sent you a dm
Ah okay
Hey so, if I’m choosing a background, can I make up my own or do I have to choose the list from D&D beyond?
You can make your own as long as you follow the formula and okay from the DM.
Is blessed strike and divine strike either or?
Kinda new to dnd anyone down to play later and help me learn?
this chat is for newer players asking questions not to find a game, if your looking for that please go to #looking-for-players and #find-a-game
Ah my bad
if you look at the pinned measages that can help you learn
I'm confused on how to find people to play with

How do I prepare a character? I understand that I can use DND Beyond or other character creators, but do I just create a level 1 character? I am new and looking to join games, so would I create a lvl 1 character and have to adjust the character to fit where they are in the story?
quick question about spell casters? are spell slots also how many spells they have and can cast until a long rest
You can have a certain number of spells prepared and a different number of spell slots
thanks
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Yes, I should rephrase it, cause I know how to create a character
Okay.
Just not sure if it is expected of me to create a lvl 1 character for all games that I want to join
and then tweak it based on where the party is currently
When you join a game the DM will tell you to make a character based on their campaign setting. If their world doesn't have dwarves then making a dwarf character is moot.
Ah okay cool
If they want everyone to start at level 3 then you will have to make a level 3 character.

Wooooo I'm brand new to this
same! i just want to play tbh but i have read the rules but cant find anyone to play with. Is there a best time to find a game that i can play?
Discord VC and sometimes a VTT like Foundry, Owlbear, Roll20
?tag new online
Within this server there's #find-a-game . Sometimes it can be hard to find a game, both in terms of time schedules as well as fitting the vibe of the group. It can take a while, but you'll eventually find a match.
As for imaginative play, that kind of style is called "theater of the mind" which has both advantages and disadvantages compared to normal play. Combat in particular can be drastically different due to a lack of a grid space.
As for what tools to use for online play, most games will use a few websites. In my experience it's usually a digital character sheet hoster (e.g. D&DBeyond), a Virtual Tabletop or VTT (e.g. Roll20), some form of audio communications (e.g. Discord), and a dice roller (optional since D&DBeyond and Discord have dice roller options.
Can you create a character that transform into an more powerful with items like super sonic?
Not really? Have you seen D&D played or read the rules linked in this channel's pinned messages?
No I new, also I'm kinda stupid sometimes
I suggest you read the Basic Rules, or at least Chapter 1, the relevant parts of Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 7, and Chapter 9.
Okay
No worries. The short version is that a lot of folks mistake D&D for a completely open-ended, do-anything sort of game. And while it has a lot of imagination, it also has a lot of rules and mechanics. It best facilitates heroic fantasy, so folks wanting to bring in characters from video games, comics, anime, or the like are going to be disappointed because it's not really built for those things.
While there isn't a way in the method that you're thinking, there's many race, class, and subclass options that offer a binary transformation state. Such examples include the Barbarian's Rage feature, the Aasimar race's Celestial Revelation feature, or the spell Tenser's Transformation.
It is often said that "flavor is free" to say that you can change the narrative description of abilities to match your vision for your character's aesthetics without changing your character's mechanics. You could flavor any such feature as you "powering up" in a manner similar to Super Sonic (perhaps by unveiling a series of gems which then surround you when you're in a powered up state). Just as before it'd be narrative only so such flavoring wouldn't, say, give you the ability to fly like Super Sonic. Keep in mind that in reality flavor is not always free, especially where it may be discontinuous with the themes/aesthetics of the campaign as a whole (i.e. wanting to play a Sailor Moon esque character in a Dark Souls esque world).
Given your example specifically, I would take a look into the Monk class and it's subclass Way of the Astral Self.
whats the word used for that one player who is always trying to convince the dm to give them over powerd stuff and tries to ebe the main charachter?
Problem Player
real asf
Hello, I'm recently new to Dnd and just looking to get some experience and have some fun 😊
look in the pinned mesages to see how to make a character and find games
Oh I've already made a character, it's a Tortle Beast Barbarian 😂
guys i have played dnd irl but never in discord . im not used to the bots neither, can you give me a quick guide on how games are played in discord ? (again I know the general stuff but for example how does the dm confirms my charachter sheet ...)
you can send your sheet to your dm and then they will say ye or nah, then if they use bots i sure the dm could help you with that but if not thats fine. there is one bot most dms you which is arave.
also there are types of online games like text based/play by post/ westmarch
thanks for the reply , then how can i find noob friendly campeigns or even one shots just so i can get used to the enviroment here
or even #looking-for-community which will be more specialised ( like a big open world that all the games are in and change the story) then looking for player
thanks man
no prob
How do I “look for dm”
on this server? you run the command in any channel
#looking-for-players contains threads of DMs looking for players. If you want to send a thread requesting for a DM, you can use the specific command related to #looking-for-dm listed in #find-a-game
Try having a glance through the #looking-for-players channel first. You'll see existing games that may be looking for players.
#looking-for-dm is your personal ad, putting yourself out there and hoping someone finds you.
Hello! So i can not seem to find the export to pdf button on the dnd beyond app
At the top of the character sheet in the mobile app (near the character's name) there is a gear icon. Click that and then select "Export to PDF". For further technical support please use the #ddb-support channel.
Ok ty
hello am fairly new to DnD and have never really sat down and played before, I need some help to build and character and to look for a party to adventure with, but I need a character first I've been using Roll20, but I don't full understand it if there is a better online character sheet am up for changing it.
For support with Roll20's tools, I'd check with their forums.
DnDBeyond has an online character sheet creator and also provides a guided path for new players: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
They also have a mobile app so you can take and use your characters off your phone.
But I'd suggest using whatever works best for you.
As for learning how to create a character the very first chapter of the free basic rules goes over it step by step: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Also check #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel for useful links and resources to help you get started.
So this is my character sheet for a half elf fighter at lvl 1 just wanted to know if it looks right
Constitustion:18 | Age:33
Strength:18 | Race:half-elf
Dexterity:16 Gender:female
Intelligence:17 | Class:fighter
Wisdom:12 | Height:6'2
Charisma:13 | Weight:190lb
Hit points
Current:22 Total:22
Hit dice:10 AC:14
Skills | feats
-acrobatics+6 |-dual wielder

Notes
Initiative
Total | Dex | misc |
Saving throws
Fortitude:
Base | class | ability | feat | magic | misc
Reflex:
Base | class | ability | feat | magic | misc
Will:
Base | class | ability | feat | magic | misc
Hit points are wrong - starting level 1 fighter should only have 10 + constitution modifer. So based on your stats there you should only have 14 HP (10 + 4 from constitution modifier).
Also don't add any feats until/unless your DM allows it.
Also the fortitude/reflex/will stuff - that's from an older D&D edition.
Unless you specify beforehand or are posting in #dnd-elder-editions , the assumption on the server is we're discussing D&D 5th Edition.
Actually since this appears to be for a legacy version of D&D ignore my feedback and go to #dnd-elder-editions
I have a bunch of questions about spellcasting.
Let's take first level wizard.
How do I know which spells require an attack roll?
I am working through Stormwreck Isle.
Also how do I know in the event of an attack roll which ability modifier applies and if the proficiency bonus applies?
The spell will say if it’s an attack roll
And your spell attack rolls and save DCs are provided by your class's spellcasting details.
Where would in the spell block say if it's an attack roll?
"You create a shard of ice and fling it at one creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target."
@echo kelp okay so funny thing I am the DM... So what are general rules about feats...?
That's the spell, yes. What does it say in the text?
@dry relic magic missile is neither an attack or save. It auto hits and automatically does damage
It is the only such spell that works that way
It says it hits a target of your choice.
Does the Attack/Save: none means there is no attack roll?
Yes, I just said that
I see, I just wanted to see if that Attack/Save section meant the same thing or if it were for something else.
Thank-you
Thank-you all
Feats are an optional rules that you can take instead of an ASI at certain lvls according to your class table
Unless your a variant human or custom lineage you wouldn’t have a feat at lvl 1 let alone 2
There are also certain supplements that have backgrounds that grant feats, but I feel that's moving away from newcomer content a bit.
Are you playing 5th edition?
Yea
For each saving throw the bonus is just the relevant stat modifier. For any saves you’re proficient in, you also add your proficiency bonus
Your class will start you with 2 save proficiencies, and you can get others from some things
Hello, I'm kinda new to DnD (I watch DnD content but I never played), I would like to make a small easy, simple campaign for a small french server. Any advice on campaign making? Or on learning DnD in general?
I recommend playing before dming
can i join a dnd campagin pretty new have never playd but i have a charecther? sorry for my speling
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
can someone help me about the limits of college of creation bard?
I would recommend starting with a a premade adventure made specifically for new DMs.
The bot posts above can help you get started as a DM.
#character-discussion or #optimization can help, it depends on what kind of help you are looking for. I can recommend one over the other if you are more specific about what you need help with.
i want to learn more about college of creation
That’s still kind of vague, but if it’s general advice on building a creation bard then #character-discussion would be my recommendation.
not exactly building like can i create "anything" with the performance of creation?
Generally while dnd can be quite flexible, it does have limitations through its rules and mechanics. What you can create will be determined by the ability you are using.
The text of the feature has the specifics. If you're ever unsure about what you can accomplish with any feature, ask your DM being sure to clarify what your intent is - sometimes there's an alternative way to get what you want.
As an example , take a look at the minor illusion spell. https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2191-minor-illusion
The illusion can last a minute, it can be a sound or an image but can’t be both, if it’s an image it must be no larger than a 5-foot cube.
You can join dnd campaigns as a new player, though not every DM will say if it is new player friendly. So ask just to be sure. While you search, take the time to learn as much as you can to improve your chances.
Need help making a character
Have you picked a race and class? Assigned your ability scores? If you want to start basic, use this set of numbers in the order you like: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. After that, #character-discussion will help.
And I've just seen you're live there now, so nevermind.
I have created a character on dndbeyond web page.

No
Oh, okay thanks
Hi how do I start playing DND?
do you have a campaign already and need help making a character or all of DND?
I somewhat have a character made in dndbeyond but I don't know where to go to start playing
I've never been able to play dnd
I would suggest going to #looking-for-players to try and find a campaign and try and find a new player friendly campaign
I would ask the dm to see if it is otherwise check the post as It will probably say as well
Heres a big advice
be patient.
Theirs about 10 players for 1 dm,knowing a dm will on average take only 4,the likeliness of you getting in a game first try is verry low,so persevere
i can understand that
Also, put some soul into it,just hopping it and hoping that the dm will find time to teach you everything 1 on 1 isnt a good tactic, learn your stuff, watch some youtube videos about it,etc etc
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Many people lol ok first things first have you looked at the basic rules?
of dnd?
Yes
#learn-to-play has tons of useful stuff and the basic rules are free on dndbeyond link below

Have a read and if you get stuck feel free to ask questions
Maybe most 1/4 have more hp than a lvl1 character
i mean a flying sword that is 1/4 , took half hp of a fighter with 1 attack + his AC is 17 which is too High for a weak player to hit, why ?
Monsters are designed to be fought by a party rather than just one PC
Level 1 PCs are also very squishy
i see , so this game is not meant to be played by less than 4 players , too bad
The game has always been designed around a party of 3 to 5 PCs
A DM could fill out the party with sidekicks NPCs.
so basicly the dm play as the dm and one other player ? ...too hard for him i guess
One DM and minimum of one player. The DM or player can control the sidekicks
i think this can be hard for a completely new dnd group
we barley know the rules
i finished a character
The DM can adjust the combat difficulty based on the number of PCs
There are solo adventurers for 1-2-1 D&D but yes, it will require some adjustment by the DM if they intend to run a "normal" adventure typically designed for 3-4 players.
Hi. Complete newbie here. Where can I listen or get involved in a session?

What is the difference between dnd versions? How is 5e different from 2e
Pretty dramatically—rules, mechanics, and focuses are very different. This article gives a bird's-eye overview: https://www.dicebreaker.com/series/dungeons-and-dragons/how-to/dnd-edition-differences
same response, i lack knowledge and experience as a new dm to make these adjustments
I’ve always wanted to play DnD but i never had anyone to play with and I have no idea how the rules work

I'm looking for a DND group welcoming to new players. I haven't studied much about the specific classes, but I am a quick learner
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Do yall use online dice or physical
I use DnDBeyond and Avrae (Discord bot) so digital for me
It will vary if you are playing in person or online.
Also for newcomers, if you use physical dice invest in a dice jail
Dice jail, ha.
How do I make a character to play D&D
DnDBeyond has a good builder see a few posts about for the help from Dyno
I suggest you read the Basic Rules, or at least Chapter 1, the relevant parts of Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 7, and Chapter 9. Then, you can use either a printed sheet/pdf or an online builder, such as D&DBeyond, to make your character.
Oh thank you!
No problem, if you have any specific questions feel free to ask here
Anyone interested in joining a simple medieval home-brew dnd that will teach you the basics of how to play the game?
I like to start off with deciding what the character im going to play wants to do, then I build who they are.
Whats a home brew..
Homebrew is fanmade content for D&D. It can be anything from rules like new spells, items, races, or a way of describing someone's world/story.
When someone says 'My game is homebrew' it typically means that game's world and/or story isn't from an official book. While 'I allow homebrew' or 'that's homebrew' typically means that rule/mechanic isn't from the official books
just wondering..is anyone willing to jump in a call and talk about how to create characters and expand about them. and give me more insight of how DnD works

Hi! so I've been off and on trying to learn and play for yeaaaarrrrssss. but nothing has really stuck no real good way to find one locally and not sure how to properly look for one online. I know we have #looking-for-players #find-a-game but is there a way to filter for more beginer friendly games? Like wanting to do one of the 5E starter sets or something?
any advice is greatly appriciated! TIA! (also sorry if this isn't the right spot for this)
Not really. Folks don’t always advertise their games are beginner-friendly, so you wind up needing to ask! The virtual weekends (see the server’s Events tab) do feature learn-to-play sessions, and you can also find tutorial games on StartPlaying (a website for paid games, but you can find free sessions too).
what are the best sites for dnd last time i was active in dnd was about 2022-2023 ish and i didnt get into it so i never really found s website to start trying to do dnd yk if anyone can recommend free websites that would be greatly appreciated
what exactly do you want the website to do?
the websites that most people use for dnd
DnD beyond is the most common, it's the official website
thank you
To clarify do you mean platforms to find groups, to play dnd online, or something else entirely?
howdy

Hello!
Do you have any questions to ask or stories to share @hallow rain?
Not really im new and still learning the ropes
That does happen to be why I started with "do you have any questions." 😅
I'm here to help.
Oh yeah mb lmaoo, well im judt kinda confused on where too start
What's your experience with D&D so far?
Have you read any D&D novels, watched any D&D movies or shows, played any number of sessions, and do you own any rulebooks?
Alright, well I know that I love watching some shows, and that can help pick things up through observation and the explanations of the players and DM in the show.
On top of that, there are guides from some smart people!
Handbooker Helper is a YouTube series from the famed D&D group Critical Role. In each episode (about 4-6 minutes long), they explain a concept of rules in D&D 5th Edition.
That's best if you have a rulebook to read in relation to the portions they cover imo.
You can get those books online via DNDBeyond and access them easily with a website on your computer, or an app on your mobile device.
For a fun show to watch, that is much easier to get into imo, I recommend Dimension 20. The people behind it are from College Humor, so you know it's very funny as that's a 25 year old comedy company.
You can also just start with the basic rules, which are completely free.
Well ive already had like four diffrent people tell me four diffrent things so idk what too do 😭
Sorry, it can be overwhelming.
The Basic Rules up to chapter 4 is the basics for players. Handbook Helper is a good YouTube series to watch. Learn the basics, then join a game that welcomes beginners.
