@prisma light
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Hello my dear friends!
I was trying to create a (comedy) Homebrew Race (Lycanthrope Type:Tree) but so far, I was unable to find «Lycanthrope» neither in the Dropdown for «Select a race to create a new Subrace for:» nor among «Select a race to create a new Variant for» so I'm currently pretty lost regarding how to start in the first place
There's no official lycanthrope race. The closest would probably be shifter. #homebrew can likely help more.
Werewolves and other lycanthropes are too powerful to be playable races (they have many abilities and resistances that are a tad OP). The closest would be the Shifter race.
Helloo everyone!! I just played a couple campaigns in real life and i want to get some more dnd!! Can anyone help me join one and explain how the online dnd works??
?tag new online
Ty!!
If you're looking to join others using this server's channels, read through #find-a-game. You'll find all the details there.
Ty!!
How important is it to have at least one magician/wizard (whatever) in a group?
Depends on what you throw at your players. If you don't throw a lot of things that require they have magic, should be fine.
Session 0 usually involves character creation so the players could/should discuss the party composition then.
Ditto Rose. If you create challenges regardless of what your players can do, you may find them stuck or in a bad way. But if you adjust to challenge them while also being fair, it should be fine. (For instance, if no one can heal, it's not very sporting to never either give them short rests and/or an opportunity to buy healing potions.)
For the healing I gave everyone a healing potion at the start. But I noticed there are enemies immune to physical attacks which they will encounter I'm sure. And the only 2 people who can deal damage to those are the elven fighter and the bard
2 out of 4 players
You can always change material as the DM.
Hello ! I need help 🙋🏻♀️
Creatures immune to physical damage is very rare in 5E and usually higher CR. Tier 1 PCs shouldn't encounter monsters with damage resistance/immunities.
What are you looking for help with?
What about... I forgot how they are called in English. Whisps?
Literally everything 😭 I've always wanted to play dnd but I don't understand a single thing

I mean I'm sure until then they have something, but right now? Next session they'll have to cross a room which would be no danger if they had magic hands. But now they have to make a Dexterity throw difficulty 15
Will-o'-wisps are CR2 and yes they're immune to electricity and poison.
Check out those resources above and #learn-to-play! If you have more specific questions, this channel is a good place for them.
Cr2?
That was my next question
Challenge Rating 2, which is a measure of how difficult they are.
You can learn more about challenge rating and scaling combat to match your party's composition in the Dungeon Master's Guide!
Don't have that
its also in the basic rules
Yeahhh I read it and I started to create my character and all but I still don't get how to play 🥲 There's too much going on
Maybe I should give them a proper reading instead of skimming and scanning
If you have DMing advice questions please head on over to #dm-discussion and we can help you there.
They sent me here a few days ago
Chapters 12 and 13 in the basic rules can help you out on this particular question
That channel is specific for DMing advice. This channel is to learn the fundamental rules of the game.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Here's the core of the game:
- The DM describes the situation. They control the world and everyone in it except for the players.
- Each player controls one character (typically). Each person describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
The rules to help decide when/why/how things go so everyone can participate equally in the story. It avoids the "Nuh uh vs yuh huh" sorts of arguments.
The video series OMYAC linked should help!
OK ok thanks 👍🏻
Also how do I find friends 😭😂

Oooh ook
Soo, I read #learn-to-play and the rules, I know how to create a character, and join a campaign (I think I do) but something that would help me the most is playing an actual game in dnd beyond, my first game
Is there a group of players who are willing to let me join them? And help me understand everything

The better you understand the rules yourself, the more likely a group is going to be to take you in. Not to mention it's important to respect the group's time! If you feel like you understand the rules, you can follow the link above to start looking for a group on this server.
Games arent played “in” DND beyond.
The app is a digital library for books and a digital character sheet
Games are still played at a table (physical or virtual)
In other words, its not a video game system, just a fancy notebook
Virtual? How?
Using Virtual Table Top programs. Thankfully, your DM will be the one choosing and setting up that part of the game.
We'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here, but DnD requires you to do some reading.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- This is a great way to learn as AL Games follow rules as written guidelines,
- Games are broken down into self contained adventures that are completed in a single session.
- This can be played in person and online.
- #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690are channels in the server where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Read the rules
Practice making a character
Find a table
Join campaign with character that fits DM’s setting
You cant avoid reading the rules
Even if videos help talk thru stuff, the game is still based on a rulebook, you need a foundation
So let me get this straight, we can make characters in dnd beyond, and upload them to the virtual table app, the dm chooses with a link or smt?
How do you tell if a spell hits the target or not?
Only if the DM is DMing online and uses D&D Beyond. If they use Roll20 or Foundry VTT they can hook it up to D&D Beyond to connect the character sheets.
You roll a spell attack roll and the DM tells you if you hit or not.
Do all spells require the attack roll? Aside from a select few like Magic missile
Spells that call for an attack roll require you to meet or beat the target's AC with the attack roll.
Spells that require a saving throw instead require the target to roll a saving throw, failing and taking the full effect of the spell if they don't meet or beat your spell save DC.
Each individual spell tells if it requires an spell attack roll or saving throw. Magic Missile is the exception to the rule.
Hello, so new to the group, what is a "community" in the /looking-for-community
No. A spell requires an attack roll only if it says it does.
When you make an attack, your attack roll determines whether the attack hits or misses. To make an attack roll, roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifiers. If the total of the roll plus modifiers equals or exceeds the target's Armor Class (AC), the attack hits. The AC of a character is determined at character creation, whereas the AC of a monster is in its stat block.

Does the dungeon master control, like , everything , or are there rules the dm has to follow, like having dice rolls higher than a certain number always be a hit
There are rules that the DM follows, and they control everything in the game using those rules, except for the player characters
What does 5e mean?
It's generally a server with a pool of DMs and players where folks sign up for an adventure to run/play rather than a singular consistent group.
5e=fifth edition, the current one.
So can the dm just be like unfair, and for fun just intentionally ruin the characters days
Can but that's not a good idea for so many reasons.
Yes DMs can be "DM vs players" DM. That's a big red flag.
Yeaaah I get what you mean
DMs should be neutral or side with the players but challenge them. They should out and out try to get their PCs killed.
Also a question, if a character dies, do they die forever?
The DM has the power to just toss anything at the party, but one shotting the players doesnt exactly make a good story
The DM is a storyteller, and is on the players' side, despite controlling the enemies 😛
Like for the end of the game?
There are magical means to revive them back to life, such as the Raise Dead spell.
If a PC dies permanently, then the player usually rolls a new character.
Without risk of death, there's no challenge to the game.
Can they join the game with new characters then?
Yes.
Okaaay
Usually, if your character dies during a campaign, you create a new character that joins your old party on the same quest.
Level 1 to 3 PCs are the most squishiest. It's harder to kill higher level PCs.
A community is a group of people where different people host and participate in different dnd games together. Some community server may dedicate themselves to a particular type of dnd play. For the example , an Adventure League community would dedicate to playing AL adventure modules.
Or something like a community of one shot play style
The fifth edition of D&D
Does the 5e have multiple worlds or versions or how does that work? Anywhere i can read about it?
Yes, there are many official campaign settings.
And there are countless of homebrew settings too.
There is official lore for different settings but it is DM dependent whether they use them or make one up
Yes. Some may also be a community where people can host home campaigns or West Marches style campaigns.
And many tables run completely made up (homebrew) worlds as well!
Some of the major settings have wikis: Forgotten Realms, Spelljammer, Eberron, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance, to name a few.
The free Basic Rules has stuff on the multiverse
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-d-the-planes-of-existence
Don't worry about the worlds / multiverse until you join a table. The DM decides what the campaign setting will be like.
That's why it's usually recommended to find a table before designing a character or reading up on lore too much: you never know what kind of world your DM will be running until they tell you!
Okayy yeah i sent some messages on the find a game for this weekend hope i can find one
My fingers are crossed for you, good luck!
Do elves get Elven accuracy by default?
no, its a Feat
They can pick it up at level 4 (at the earliest), assuming the DM allows feats in their game
Does the catapult spell apply to weapons? And if so would damage from weapons n spell stack?
It would as long as the weapon weighed between 1 and 5 pounds, and it does not stack.
you can use the spell on a weapon but it doesnt do anything a non-weapon wouldnt do
So if they were to use catapult on an arrow, would it deal arrow damage as well?
No
Just the spell damage, easiest way to think of it is, Spells do what they say they do and nothing more.
I think I would allow it. It's not like you can use catapult spell indefinitely. I had a fellow player tear a hanging lock of the door using that spell too
Your DM can always rule otherwise, of course. But by default the answer would be no
you have the right idea though, catapult can be a very creative tool if you cast it on specific objects like alchemists fire or holy water
How do I determine how much damage gets taken?
From what?
Roll some dice
any ability that does damage tells you how many dice to roll and what modifiers to add for damage (and also the average as alternativ in case of monster statblocks)
How do i calculate damage for a weapon? My first character was a spell caster, so i understand that to calculate hit it's 1d20 + modifier + proficiency
But when i was using spells it was just the damaghe of what the spell said, do physical weapons do extra damage?
The weapon you're using should tell you what the damage die is
You roll that and add the appropriate skill modifier
It's 1d12 piercing, but idk if it's 1d12 straight up, or if it's 1d12 + Modifier + prof, or 1d12 + modifier
The weapons table show the damage dice to use for each weapon.
Just modifier unless you have specific abilities that add more bonuses
Or it's a magic weapon with + to damage
A short sword does 1d6 plus your Modifier of piercing damage.
Musket is: 1d12 Piercing doesnt specify anything about the modifier
You never add your Proficiency Bonus to the weapon/spell damage, only the appropriate modifier.
do you add your spellcasting modifier to damage rolls with a spell?
The combat rules tell you what ability to use when attacking
For ranged weapons, it's always Dex by default
And those rules are also what tells you to add the modifier
no, unless the spell tells you to
The spell will tell you how much damage to roll for.
yea that's what i was following it, but the weapon also says to do 1d12 piercing
neither the spell nor the weapon specifies modifier
I recommend reading the combat chapter if you haven't
It's full of useful information about attacking with weapons
Including the rules I mentioned above
attacks with weapons do add ability modifiers to damage by default. spell attacks dont
to be fair i was using spells exclusively with first character so i skimmed combat with weapons portion
That's why I suggested reading it now
Melee weapons (including weapons with the Thrown property) do the weapon damage + Str modifier
Ranged weapons do the weapon damage + Dex modifier
Finess weapons do the weapon damage + Str/Dex modifier.
If you've mostly played a spellcaster, you may not have used those rules before
I'm playing giff, so i have advantage on strength checks & saving throws, so i made it a monk
so ill also have to read unarmed combat portion
Advantage to Str checks doesn't make affect weapon attacks or damage rolls. It only affects Str ability checks, such as Athletics checks.
So the character i came up with is Giff Monk, i gave it a 16 in Con, Dex, and Wisdom, but gave it an 8 in the other 3, because we using a point buy system, but i dont know if having a -1 in 3 stats is good if it means i get +3 in the others
It's all a trade off
You may find that having that many negatives isn't fun for you. Or you may find that you like living dangerously
If you are going to choose those type of minmaxed stats, be prepared to fail rolls related to the negative stats regularly. Whether that's okay or not will depend on the game and how you like to play
its certainly a tradeoff. you are good at 2 things and pretty survivable but absolutely suck at everything else.
i thought by making my AC 16 would be the smart thing to do, we're at level 5 so i went mobile for the feat, but i could go asi
wasnt sure if that was smart
Both options are valid. It really depends on what you want to do with the character
And what kind of challenges you're facing in game
If you have other people to do the Int/Cha/Str stuff, then you may get by just fine without those
Sure, it's a CoS campaign, my character died so im making another, the party is a Cleric, Warlock, Artificer, and uh, i think a fighter or barbarian.
My character i wanted to make giff so it gets advantage on strength checks, and can ignore the disadvantage on long range on guns and ignore loading property on the gun,
How do I type in looking for dm?
and went way of the astral form monk, so i can use wisdom in place of my strength for strength checks
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
plus i get extra arms to make unarmed attacks
and the gun works as a dedicated monk weapon assuming i read the ruling properly
iirc, as long as you're proficient with it, you should be able to make it a dedicated monk weapon
Giff don't have an extra set of arms
Giff gives me proficiency with firearms, and firearms are martial
Astral Monk does though,
I did I don’t understand it
While the spectral arms are present, you gain the following benefits:
You can use your Wisdom modifier in place of your Strength modifier when making Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
You can use the spectral arms to make unarmed strikes.
When you make an unarmed strike with the arms on your turn, your reach for it is 5 feet greater than normal.
The unarmed strikes you make with the arms can use your Wisdom modifier in place of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls, and their damage type is force.
im still super new so i dont know if im cooking hard with this character, or being an absolute idiot
and my last character died when i tried doing it on my own lol,
The command starts with / you should then get prompted to pick one of the bot commands like /looking-for dm. Select the one you want based on which channel you'd like the bot to post in.
Once you execute that bot command, the bot will provide you a form to fill out. Fill it out (don't share personally identifying information as outlined in our server rules on User Safety) and submit it.
The bot will then create the post in the channel and attach a thread to it.
Use the thread to provide any updates or clarifications/corrections. Or to communicate with folks.
Seems fine to me
You've got decent stats for monk stuff and the astral monk arms attacking from 10 ft away would help you avoid the need to be next to people to punch them. Which makes it easier to have the musket be your primary weapon
It gives me no option to chat tho. Like I can’t type like you can here.
Assuming your DM will let you create bullets/find ammunition somehow than that should work
And it sounds like you've got a couple people to be in melee so you don't have to
It just says “done reading, Cheadle out dnd newcomers”
And then sends me here
Make sure your Discord client is up to date - sometimes out of date Discord clients don't play well with the bot.
DM has said he's cool with me starting with: A Renaissance gun with 100 bullets. I went with Guild artisan so i could craft more bullets/have proficiency with smith tools
When i ran the idea past him
Then you seem to have it covered
i just, i wanted to make sure im not making any big mistakes by going triple 16
and wanted to run it past people with way more experience than myself
Hi, I'm new here! Is this an introductory channel?
There's no definite answer on that one
So you'll have to decide for yourself. Dex and Wis tend to be the 'power' stats in terms of saves and the like, so they're ones it's better to max than min usually.
also, as i am unsure how guns work in comparison to something like a bow/crossbow or even a sword, does that mean i can shoot twice with extra attack?
iirc, giff let you ignore the loading property
"Firearms Mastery. You have a mystical connection to firearms that traces back to the gods of the giff, who delighted in such weapons. You have proficiency with all firearms and ignore the loading property of any firearm. In addition, attacking at long range with a firearm doesn't impose disadvantage on your attack roll."
So once you get extra attack, you would be able to shoot twice when you take the Attack action
ok cool,
Otherwise, loading would stop you at one attack instead
and then idk if this is a RAW or if this needs to be covered with the DM, is it possible to pick up used bullets/if i can find them?
like if i miss with an arrow and it goes flying into a tree trunk i can just go collect it, but idk if that's the same w/ bullets
The general rule on normal ammunition is that you can recover half
I don't remember whether bullets have different rules in the DMG. So
Sounds good
sorry to pester ya, got 1 more for ya
if i shop somewhere/can i turn my GP into SP, and if i can, can i use SP to make silver pieces? we already have encountered werewolves and saw our fighter npc do no damage because no silver weapon
Can i do silver weapon by turning silver coins into silver bullets?
or is that a DM/Theater of mind thing
alright cool
Since D&D has pretty minimal crafting rules
That specific case would be DM, but I’m pretty sure it’s 100 gp to silver a weapon (or 20 pieces of ammunition)
do i need to silver the musket?
You’d be silvering the ammunition and not the musket
Silvering the musket would have no effect since that’s not what’s hitting the enemy
yea, i mean that's what i thought but i guess i confused myself lol
You probably could silver the musket if you really wanted to. But it would only matter if you actually hit people with it
can i keep asking questions because i was reading up the combat section and now i have another question
You can keep asking. If I'm not around to answer someone else should at some point :)
Question relates to grappling
"Using at least one free hand, you try to seize the target by making a grapple check instead of an attack roll: a Strength (Athletics)" but my subclass says: "You can use your Wisdom modifier in place of your Strength modifier when making Strength checks and Strength saving throws."
Does that allow me to use wisdom for grappling?
Yep. We encourage asking questions
I don’t believe so
Grapple is a strength (athletics) check, so it should work I think. It would just be wisdom (athletics) instead
Isn’t grapple still an attack though?
The subclass specifically states ability checks and saving throws, not attacks
is athletics not an ability check?
Athletics is an Str ability check.
Grappling is a strength check that replaces an attack
That’s true but in this case I believe you’re rolling athletics as part of an attack
#dnd-rules can help you with this better than we can
Ok ok ill ask in there later
It's still a strength check, so imo it would work. What really matters for you is what your DM thinks
cool cool
Since even if #dnd-rules 100% says it's possible, the DM can still say no
But if they like RAW, that may help sway them
how do i determine my modifier for it, btw, im reliant upon the roll20 buttons we use, so when the sheet says like -1, 0, +1, +2, +3, etc next the roll button, how are those detemined
You might have to do a custom roll because it's an alternate stat ability check
And in my experience, Roll20 and DDB don't play nice with those
Your modifier is based on your ability score.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
It would be your wisdom bonus and proficiency, if you're proficient with athletics
Assuming we're still talking about a Wisdom grapple 😁
Awesome ill read that
we were, and more-so trying to just learn how those are calculated in case something similar happens with something else
Some rules may be up to DM interpretation, so it’s important to ask in advance before a session to ensure expectations match. Remember communication is a key skill to have at a dnd table.
He's been chill w/ me starting with a gun & bullets at the cost of most of the starting equipment due to it fitting the background, but he's like: "Dont expect to find any guns in the campaign" so i decided to write that they were a gunsmith with guild artisan background so at least now i have proficiency with Smith & Carpentry tools :)
Alternate ability score skill checks are in the PHB. And generally speaking, just have you add a different stat bonus than the usual one for the skill. You apply proficiency (or not) as usual
race* not background
I would recommend relaying that to your DM. Simply writing something into your backstory doesn’t guarantee mechanical benefits.
Sounds like they already did that part of it
Just might need to doublecheck about Wisdom grapples
i've asked 'em to look at the sheet which does have that on it, he's said it looks good,
That’s good!
i mean, im using a gun i doubt ill be grappling especially because i'd probably prefer to make punches
True. If you're close enough to grapple, you're close enough for things to hit you back
And who wants that
I decided to go mobile feat, so with monk movement ihave 50ft of movement, plus i have "When you make a melee attack against a creature, you don't provoke opportunity attacks from that creature for the rest of the turn, whether you hit or not." so i thought it was good, but im unsure if it's better than grabbing a +4 in dex, or Wisdom
If you're intending to mostly be range/at least 10 feet away punching with astral arms then mobile isn't as important, imo
So you might get more value out of extra Dex to help with AC and attacking
is dex better than wisdom in this case?
oh yea, i guess if the gun uses dex
my bad i answered my own question lol
are you playing an astral self monk with a gun?
Giff. Way of the Astral Self Monk, Guild Artisan Background, Musket as the weapon, 1d12 piercing, was asking about it
most of my questions have gotten answered, but yea im trying to determine if Mobile is the way to go, or an ASI or something like Alert or something
may i suggest you to look in to the shadow monk?
ASI?
i mean i can, but Giff gives me proficiency with strength checks/throws and astral self allows me to use wisdom modifier instead of strength
shadow monk doesnt seem like something i'd like
ability score increase.. most classes get them every 4 levels - alternatively, people can take feats.
I suggested it because it allows you to stay on the sidelines, at 6th level it makes you teleport up to 60 feet, it can even make you invisible
thanks

If you are a visual learner, this 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
You can also check out the resources in the bot post above and #learn-to-play
Every time I check looking for players it’s either full or it’s advanced is there any way I can find campaigns that are more beginner friendly?
Would spells from@background or race be capped by the total # of spells a character can learn?
You have to keep looking. Also check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online.
Or are background and racial spells like added to ur spell list alongside your total
added alongside. any spell number limit from your class will specifically apply to spells learnt via your class
Can someone play with me and teach me some aspects and fundamentals? I get most basic things
Most tables out there looking for players are open to teaching newbies ime. Just be transparent about your newbishness and you should be all goods
Thanks
it's not really possible to individually teach every new player given the number of new people we get each day. Have a look at the resources in #learn-to-play, and once you're ready to look for a game (I'd recommend reading the basic rules and maybe making a practice character first) you can have a look for one using the #find-a-game channels
You will increase your chances of being accepted to a table by learning the fundamental rules on your own. Help your future DM by knowing the rules instead of having them constantly pausing the game to teach you.
Alright
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Hi new here. I'm Sylvie 😇
Where can I buy the map again
What map?
lol
@lyric fjord what map?
Does anyone have tips for finding DND communities in your area? I dont live in the middle of nowhere but I feel like nobody around here plays dnd. I want to learn it by getting the actual handbooks and stuff but then have nobody to play with in real life, which I'd like. Nobody I know plays it and none of my friends play it or have interest in it.
Look for Facebook groups@sinful skiff
Thank you, I actually didnt think of that
I'm really new to dnd i've never even played how does this work im interested in playing but i have no clue about anything except that there's dices

Local libraries and comics/hobby/game shops sometimes have tabletop programming. Also, you can use websites such as MeetUp, Reddit, or the like to look for nearby groups.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.

Do I need to spend more skill points to raise my skill stats once I reach a certain level ?
Let’s say I’m a Warrior and I want to raise my strength form 19 point to 20.
Do I need to spend only 1 skill points ?
does this rule change as you reach an higher stat level ?
do I still need a single skill point to increase my strength from 21 to 22 ?
Or would I need to skills points to increase my strength from 21 to 22 ?
The rules don't change as you level up.
- To raise a score by 1 you must expend one of your Attribute Skill Improvement (ASI) points (or optionally take a feat that raises that attribute score).
- Normally you can not take an attribute over 20. 20 is the maximum. The only exceptions come from magic items which specifically state that they take an attribute score over the normal 20 score ceiling and some class features (barbarian primal champion feature that raises the strength and constitution score ceilings to 24).
got it ! thanks mate
That link has useful information
Thanks David with a y (inside joke with a friend)
My name is Davyd, not David
I know its just an inside joke i have with one of my friends
You and your friends "inside jokes" don't make it appropriate to misspell my name

I just did the demo and got the docket with 9/9 hit points
Congrats 🎉
A lot level 1 characters start with around that amount of HP
I wish there was more stuff like the demo
Well the demo is mostly there to give you an idea what playing the game could be like.
Ah okay thank you

I just wish I had a group lol
The post above goes over a few options you can explore
Thank you!
where do you live i want to start a campaign with some friends its our first campaign so we aren’t really experienced but i think its gonna be fun
It’s recommended that you don’t disclose personal information
Yeeaaahhh not telling you that
Im not flying out to Deutschland just for dnd lol
Yeah let’s watch it on the sharing personally identifying info as that’s against our server rules
ok
Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
ok
Plus it’s much more effective to try to match by availability over time zones
ok
I recommend using a tool like hammer time: https://hammertime.cyou/
It makes time post to be displayed on the viewers own time zone
Many players find games online: here in #looking-for-players , Roll20, Reddit.
Hi, Could anyone tell me any real game examples that result in a player being incapacitated? And the physical difference between grappled and restrained. I know their effects on skill checks, i just dont understand when they could be used.
Failing a saving throw for a spell like Hypnotic Pattern renders the target incapacitated. Similarly, you can grapple a target without any special equipment or abilities, but restraining them would take something extra (a spell, rope/manacles, etc.).
Thank a lot! That really helped.
If you want a more specific breakdown, I imagine the folks in #dnd-rules can probably point you to the relevant passages.
Grappled means someone's got a grip on you and is controlling your movement. Restrained means you're caught in such a way that your specific range of motion is also impaired.
Think like grabbing someone by their arm compared to twisting their arm behind their back.
Oh makes sense, thanks!
This is the official DnD newcomers channel! Welcome! Are you looking to start learning or playing?
Playing yeah.
Just made my first character thing, so I made a post looking for a dm. Just kinda waiting tbh
Pretty worried but I’ll live I’m sure
You're probably better off being proactive and messaging people in #looking-for-players
It can take time. Do remember there are also posts looking for players and other places (Roll20, Reddit, DDB forums) that people use to organise their games.
Oh yeah I’ve looked there too, most the posts there are ether full or require voice chat which won’t work for me since the microphone I have currently is… literally in pieces. Thanks to it flying out of my car
Voice chat on Discord mobile is an option, or there are play-by-post games that use text.
I suppose I could. I just really don’t know what I’m gonna get lol
If you don't have a voice chat option, play by post is probably going to be your best bet at finding a game online
Or save up some pennies and get a replacement mic. Doesn't have to be top range.
Yep. Play by post can be asynchronous (no set time) or have a set time that people need to be there and playing.
And yeah, a generic headset works fine for a D&D mic.
I just checked that out, Its a shame we're in different time zones but I wish you the best of luck! Like others have said def try #looking-for-players
Hello there
General Kenobi
Thanks anyway!
let's say one of my friend is down and has to roll his first death saving throw (out of 3)
If i'm nearby and I want to stabilize him, I will use one action to do so by rolling a Medecine check DC10
what if I want to give him an health potion ? will I use another action ?
or can I use an health potion directly on him before stabilizing him ?
it's an action to drink a potion or feed it to someone
Lots of games may change this rule, but thats the rule as written
Depending on his health, it might be best just to heal him. If he gets up to 1, he is automatically stablized I believe.
Now, feeding someone a potion is a lot better than just stabilizing them, because now they're conscious
Yeah, you can use an action to administer the health potion to them, even before stabilizing them. In fact, if you do, you won't need to stabilize them at all! They'll regain consciousness and be awake, prone on the ground
so if I've a potion, no need to spend an action to stabilize him, I'll feed him with a potion directly ?
Correct
You need to spend the action to feed the potion, and they will be automatically stabilized and healed, yes
To be specific, administering potion would be using your Action for the "Use an Object" action
Hey anyone has a beginner friendly online group i can join?
I really wanna start playing but i dont have any good groups so id really like to find some online
Trying to but it’s slow
Well is warlock fun?
I’ve never gotten to play a campaign so idk lol

Just about to do that haha.
Depends on the individual.
You will spend a lot of time casting Eldritch Blast over and over again on your turns.
Unless you go for Hexblade and fight in melee
It's also worth taking a look around at some common sites like Roll20, LFG on Reddit or the D&D Beyond forums.
You only get a few spells per rest but they are powerful.
Ive no idea what that means
Most of the time when you're in fights, you'll be casting the same spell on repeat
As a generic warlock
Huh that sounds like a bore
Like I said, depends on the player. There are certainly ways to modify it or make it more interesting.
Warlocks are kinda weird and I wouldn’t recommend them for a first timer
It's an effective spell
More boring than swinging a sword over and over?
Warlocks with a level or two get Eldritch Invocations for more features. Their Pact and patron also contribute, and eldritch blast (their signature spell) is the top damaging cantrip in the game.
It's worth trying different things out when you're entering into D&D to see what you like at first. It will change over time, but you shouldn't make your mind up about anything before you try it at least a little

Hey Fellas and Felletes, Been about 12 years or so since I played last and I'm working my what through the learn to play on beyond. Just wondering if some things have changed since I last played. Pretty sure we rolled for our stats then and had to make it work or re roll all of them.
Generating ability scores has really changed much in 12 years. You either use Point Buy, Standard Array, or roll (usually 4d6 and drop the lowest die).
Check out the bot links above.
will do thank you. I'm going to start with this learn to play and go from there.

Let's start at a beginning.
Do you have a class and race in mind from the Basic Rules?
Did you read the first four chapters?
Nice. So next we'll assign some ability scores. If I give you 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8, can you tell me how you'd assign them to your abilities?
omg dude no i dont have the books i keep tellin ppl taht
hey?
huh?
How do I access the server? I am primarily a DM
uuhhhh i dont even know what im supposed to do with those numbers
Dude, the Basic Rules are free.
Basic Rules PDF

Basic Rules on D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Your ability scores tell you how good your character is at certain things. You put a number from that list on each.
Fighters usually want high Strength and Constitution.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiers
BRO I JUST SAID IN MIAN CHAT IT WASNT HELPFULL
Then tell us which section you're having trouble understanding.
D&D is a game of rules. You CANNOT avoid not reading the rules.
ok well i want high intellagence, so i think 15 would be good and +2. uh wait do i have to role a dice to determine this, or do i have to pick number based off of the character or can i just pick a random number?
If I give you 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8, can you tell me how you'd assign them to your abilities?
You don't need a high Int score for a fighter. It's useless for that class.
ok 15 for intelegence, 14 for strength, i dont know what the rest do like constitution wtf is that
Take a look at this section and come back to it:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiers
done
Welcome! I think this message was lost in the previous conversation. What server are you referring to exactly?
OK, as a fighter you get to pick two skill proficiencies from a list. These are things your character has had some training in to get better at.
Pick two:
Acrobatics, Animal Handling, Athletics, History, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, and Survival
k uh 13 for charisma, 12 for constituion and 10 fro wisdom
wait no
10 for dexterity
and 8 for wisdom
A Fighter's most important ability scores are [either Strength or Dexterity] and Constitution
@wild onyx dude i gtg now, well talk tomorw?
also remind me to do this tomr too
bye, see u tomr i gtg now
Hello, does anyone know any good sea-based campaigns that I can host as a beginner.
Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Ill check it out thanks
You should read the basic rules, all anyone is doing here is literaly just reposting from it. Sit down, take your time, really study it
Yelling at anyone here is the least productive thing you can do

So due to some scheduling conflicts, I’m no longer in the game where i was playing a paladin
It’s for the best, I messed myself up joining an already high level campaign as a newbie
Probably gonna retire my Paladin character, loved him even if he was mechanically a mess
if it makes you feel any better: it's not unheard of to get some experience under your belt and then want to play a character you played previously to "do them right"
so don't think that's the last you'll see of your paladin if u really like them
You read my mind
How do i play dnd?
Check #find-a-game
Read the instructions.
Oké
Hi everyone ! I'm a member of the old guard, starting with ad&d 2nd ed in 1996.
Today i play mostly solo on 5e, and sometimes (2-4 sessions / year) with friends
by the way, is there a channel on translations planning of official campaign books §? (i'm french and i reeeaaaallyy hope for a translation of Rime of the frostmaiden 😉 )
@lyric fjord this channel is more for newcomers. And we don't have a channel for translations/non English discussion
Is there a way I can join a campaign, I play on DnD beyond

#character-discussion is what you're looking for!
Games arent played on dnd beyond..
Did your DM say everyone is starting at lv3?
Yes
Ok
Well, looks druidy to me. I'd maybe see if there was another option for detect traps. Have a word with your DM before the game about wild shape forms.
ohhhh okie to be honest im still new😅
DnD Beyond is kind of like a big binder to hold all your notes, character sheets, and rule books. In order to play a game online, you usually use voice chat or text with a group of people that you get together with, sometimes using Virtual Table Top programs.

Demiplane.
Took a look and looks all online to me
Your local game store, comic book shop, book shop, or even library may be the best way to find a local in-person group. Also Facebook.
Thanks....guess I'll have to get my butt out of the house and look

if im still new should I do a short like 1 day game or should i jusmp into a longer term game ?
It might be a better idea to start with something short-term and ramp up if it’s a good fit. No sense making a commitment before you know if personalities and playstyles mesh.
Why not both?
hello guys
i have never played dnd before ive just watched one kinda short campaign(broken bonds)
but i wanted to try hosting a game with me and a few of my friends
anyone got like any advice or things i should keep note of?
this will be an online thing with me and i.believe 2 of my friends
for starters does anyone know a good online tool we can all use to play?
like a vtt (virtual table top)?
roll 20 is a great one
we really havent planned much yet lol we plan to sit down today evening
alr ill look at that
Owlbear.rodeo is a fairly straight forward and simple VTT and they do have a free tier.
For further 3rd party tool discussion we have #third-party
As in you want to try dming?
i will not be the one dming itll be my friend
but he is also completely new im just asking questions for everyone in my group
Kudos to your friend who's trying from the get go. Just a few advice
- Do reach out if they need help. Dming is not easy and can be daunting alone. The dnd community is always willing to advice.
- No one starts out good. The key is to not give up and keep trying.
You literally get good by getting good.
well thats fair enough
Also we have #dm-discussion if your friend wants to chat and discuss DM tips and tricks with others
alr ty for the help
This sounds like a #character-discussion or #optimization topic
Oops, apologies
Question for the discord and people who've been in groups, how rowdy do groups get as far as swearing goes. Just trying to make sure I'm not jumping into a COD lobby
to be honest that will vary hugely from group to group
i realize that anecdotal evidence doesn't count for much but i've never had a group get to the level of a FPS game with voice chat, if that means anything
Talk to the DM. The average is moderate swearing, but not obscene amounts for no reason. Some groups will have little to no, others will have an Australian swearing like crazy (or non-Australian, but sometimes an Australian).
Appreciate the details, thx
Okay thank you
@unborn solar The number of spellslots you have is listed in the Wizard Table, you can see the table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#QuickBuild12
ohh okay so according to this at level 10 i know 10 spells and i have 2 spell slots? that means i can use any of those 10 spells 2 times per sesion?
sorry wrong table thats warlock
i dont understand the spell slots per spell level thingy jeejej
Did you read the spellcasting section?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#WhatIsaSpell
you can only cast a spell using a slot of that level or higher, so you only get a certain number of slots per spell level
that means at level 10 i get 4 level 1 spells?
no, there's no limit on how many spells of any given level you can know, other than the limit of total spells you can learn/prepare
No. As a level 10 wizard you have four slots for level 1 spells.
Wizards can know as many spells they have in their spellbooks.
so 4 slots for level 1 spells? that means i can get 4 spells of level 1?
You can also cast those 1st level spells with spell slots of a higher level, but yes
so at level 10 you have 15 spells plus 5 cantrips"?
Wait, you're asking about Spells Known... so no.
The amount of spells you know are seperate to your number of spell slots
you can cast 1st-level spells four times with those slots, but you can know more than 4 1st-level spells
ohhh and how do i know how many spells i can learn at a campaign if i start at level 10?
okay i get it i can cast that amount of spell slots for each spell level
like 2 times each level 5 spell
3 times each level 4 spell and so on
preparing spells:
You prepare the list of wizard spells that are available for you to cast. To do so, choose a number of wizard spells from your spellbook equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
spells known:
At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice.
Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the Wizard table. On your adventures, you might find other spells that you can add to your spellbook.
you might want to ask your DM if your character could have learned any more spells as they are level 10 and wizards are able to add new spells to their spellbooks through scrolls/other spellbooks they find
to figure that out, you should build your character at level 1, and go thorugh the levelling and spell learning process level by level
to be fair on ddb (if they are using that), as a wizard you can add as many spells as you want to your spellbook
since they are able to add stuff via spell scrolls
Wizards spell casting allows you to learn spells if you copy from other spell books or spell scrolls.
So given the time and money, you could have all the wizard spells in your spell book
You start with 8 1st level spells in your spellbook, and can add an additional 2 every level, choosing from any spell you have spell slots for. This means that by level 10 you can have:
- 8 1st level spells
- 4 2nd level spells
- 4 3rd level spells
- 4 4th level spells
- 4 5th level spells
if you don't get to add extras, you should have 24 spells in your spellbook
ohhh okaayy ty
During the course of your adventuring career you may find wizard spell scrolls and spellbooks, which you can copy spells you don't know into your own spellbook.
(Of course that's up to the DM to decide if those spell scrolls and spellbooks are loot)
Yeah, as you play the game, you get items and spells and treasure by discovering it.
But in the app, you can just add anything. So if you’re starting at level 10 for some reason, talk to your dm about what spells and treasure you’re starting with.
Hi I’m very new to DND want to start but not to sure where to go/what to read (most experience I have with DND is baldurs gate 3)
You can’t copy down spells from other spellists and prepare them tho

Hey, I'm not new to dnd but almost never play, I've been allocated as the dm for a group of players (some new some experienced) what do I need to know and what should I bring
This seems more like a DM question. #dm-discussion I can give you some advice there
Ok
anyone have any tips for a newbie?
"Winning" in DnD is secondary. Having fun is primary.
what should be a maximum amount of players in a campaign?
The game is designed for a DM and 4-6 players. the maximum depends on the DM and what they feel comfortable with
Some DMs won't run D&D for more than 3 players, while others feel confident with a dozen
Biggest I've played in was like 12. I had a turn every half an hour. And I was a Warlock, so all I did was Eldritch Blast.
Oof
Tbf, it was only for a couple of sessions. Basically a bunch of people who were previously in the campaign came back for the final fight.,
I cant imagine rolling for Eldritch Blast, then watching an episode of Delicious in Dungeon before my next turn happens.
Yeah, 4-6 players is the optimal.
Hi, I'm new to DND. I was wondering what motives y'all to play DND?
Having fun with my friends exploring an interesting story
Adventure, excitement
Co-operative story game that allows for theatrics, drama, creativity and a bit of strategic thinking.
idk just having fun you know with friends and whatnot
Less "optimal" and more "what the game is designed for"
What's "optimal" depends on the DM
@sour rain Hi there 👋 what help are you looking for getting started with Dungeons & Dragons?
Boredom. Great motivation ngl.

While I appreciate the sentiment, this isn't a social/general discussion channel
So when I look at smaller maps, filled with squares, 1 square equals 5 feet?
Typically.
The map will (should) say
I like drawing maps the most.great time killer at work
I tend to do 5 foot squares unless it’s a really big space.
hi everyone
hey, I'm new and have some questions about how this all works.

would it be better if i stapled my character sheet?
Whatever is best for you. When I used paper sheets, they normally got stored in plastic wallets for safekeeping.
Mine are a wrinkled mess so I would suggest doing something to keep them neat
Paperclips are common for me.
And I store all my papers in a binder or folder depending.
mine are already wrinkled, my dog has a habit of getting on the table to check what I'm doing
I’ve a question.
So im still rather new to DnD, generally speaking. But I’ve actually grown more interested in DMing my own campaign with my own world and narrative. Would it be challenging to focus on learning how to DM instead of gaining more experience in actually playing?
Alright cool
It certainly takes a little bit more work, but it's very doable! Plenty of DMs here started their DnD journey behind the screen
And what should be someone's first step in learning how to DM? I've researched some basics about encounter planning and general rules of combat but without practice i think some parts always seem to be lacking
Start with an adventure
Some good, newcomer friendly adventures include
- Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk
- Dragons of Icepsire Peak
- Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
- Wilds Beyond the Witchlight
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and watch Matt Colville's first handful of "Running the Game" videos. Those should be enough to get you going, I think.
thanks!!
Hello! I'm extremely new to this haven't even played my first campaign yet! I was wondering what's the best way to get familiar with the rules? Is it best to read the basics and then play becoming more familiar as you play or is it better to become familiar with all the different rules before you play?
It really depends on context. If you're trying to join with strangers, you increase your chances of being invited if you know a little about how to play rather than putting the onus on them to teach you. If you're learning alongside friends, you can just sort of dive in and pick it up as you bop along.
I think it's different for everyone!
For me personally? I try to read my class features and just have an idea of what they are, even if it doesn't make 100% sense yet.
Then in the game, I just kind of ask questions and try my best to just try things out. I'm very much a "hands-on" learner so getting to actually use my mechanics and play the game is the best way for me to learn.
Okay thank you! I will get familiar with the class my character has and let strangers know i am new so if they don't wanna deal with explaining everything they can just say no. I would also say i'm very hands on with learning but don't have any friends that play this game so hopefully i will find some kind strangers! thank you for the advice i really appreciate it!
There are resources for learning to play, aside from reading the Basic Rules and #learn-to-play! Explainer videos like Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School can make the process easier, and there are frequently learn-to-play sessions that are part of the D&D virtual weekends (in the server's Events channel).
Thank you so much!
My kind of channel
should i play some couple of cmapaign first before becoming dm as im new and have no experience or can i just create a campaign and read the rule
It's definitely possible to start as a DM! It's really just about what appeals to you.
Being the DM means a game is almost certain to happen, whereas being a player can mean lots of searching before landing a group.
I would recommend you use a prewritten adventure rather than create a campaign from scratch when you have no experience with the game.
what prewritten adventure would your recommend?
The Starter Set's adventure Dragons of Stormwreck Isle was made for new players and DMs.
Or an introductory one-shot/short adventure.
Intro to stormwreck isle is a good lesson. https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/intro-to-stormwreck-isle
Very clear and walks the new DM through each step.
This might be a better link, as you can read it in your browser without downloading into beyond app. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/itsi/intro-to-stormwreck-isle

I’m looking to join a campaign. I’ve built a character and read and reread the rules
Check #find-a-game
I'm looking for someone to help me create a homebrew character of a race that isn't on the playable race list.
I’m brand new to discord lol so I didn’t know how to post there. I figured it out
#homebrew is a great place to get help on that.
Do note, that if you are new to dnd itself, it is recommended that you hold off on hombrewing until you understand how the mechanics work.

Remember that you need the DM's permission for homebrew stuff. Player-made homebrews tend to be imbalanced (aka OP).

i love this mans content
i want to be a othbraker goblin palidin
if that exists
Probably best to let people ask questions here so more people can answer. And no offense, but some people give misinformation.
if there is a posibility can someone help me make that
I get that. But what bothers me, is just throwing sources at people is the same as a teacher handing out an assignment and not walking them through it.
That's because dozens of new people join every day.
sure, that's possible
Oathbreakers aren't a class players normally have access to. They're optional with DM's permission.
that sonds fun
Those Paladins are the least bound to some strict of code. If you played Baulder's, being any other Paladin can sometimes be frustrating with how easy it is, to break an oath
Stick with the options in the free Basic Rules for now to learn how to create a character.
goblin berserker
I played this game with my friends one day and played for 8+ hrs I had tons of fun it was great …we made our own map and story like as well as character s … I would really love to get into this 🫡
To help you get started, feel free to start with this 3 min video from Handbooker Heper about paladins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMsg3QskvtU&t=95s&ab_channel=CriticalRole
It can work as great intro and overview.
Once you are done, feel free to read the first few chapters of the free basic rules as that goes into character creation. Dndbeyond also offers a detailed character builder that automates some things.
Good dayy! I'm new in this community and hopefully I'm welcome. I have zero knowledge about playing Dungeons & Dragons, and I'm very willing to learn, would someone assist me? 🥹

now watching thr vid this build sonds ever more funny
can some one hrlp me make a carther sheat for aq goblin berserker
Wait so do u need a character build before playing? Or do u make it based on the storyline of the dm
You don't need a character build before playing, but you should know the basics of character creation.
You should always build a person before making a character. Start off with some basics.. say, who is this person you are wanting to. I say, do and create the fun parts of making a character first, then find the race and class that makes the most sense for your, individual story
can some one give me the baics of berserkers
Underneath aesthetics of D&D is a system with rules and mechanics.
The appearance, personality, and the narrative personalities are best saved until after you know what campaign you will be playing.
As that helps ensure that a character and campaign are compatible with each other.
Sry if I ask dumb questions…I’m new and really wanna get into this 😂….so as far as playing goes does the dm go on voice or video chat and also how does gameplay go if I have no dice or maps and things like that
The method of play is up to the individual DM
For example, a player character that wants to take over the family shop is great for a campaign where bandits are raiding towns, but may not be compatible for a campaign focuses on traveling around different parts of the world.
Feel free to DM me
If you play online you'll likely use voice/text chat to communicate. You'll use digital dice rollers.
Makes sense
Learn the fundamental rules first by reading the free Basic Rules.
Create a character but don't hold on to it because the DM will most likely ask you to create a new one to fit their campaign setting.
before diving into subclasses, I'd recommend starting with learning about the base class in the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClassesSummary
Most classes don't get their subclass until level 3.
It's perfectly okay to ask questions.
The purpose of this channel is to help new hobbyist learn about the basics of D&D and learn how to play.
How you play dnd will vary depending on if you are playing online or in person.
What are campaigns? 🥹
I’m guessing it’s the storyline the dm has created to roleplay
@true musk why can't i find goblin?
A campaign is a long story that takes place over multiple sessions of D&D
Good guess bad guess?😂 we’re about to find out
Goblin race is in Volo's Guide
Goblin isn’t available for free, you have to purchase it in Monsters of the Multiverse
which costs money
Dope I was on track
Campaigns can last year to decades (real time).
TV analogy for D&D:
One-shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series
Volo’s is outdated, and can no longer be purchased
Because it's not a part of the free basic rules. You can find all the playable races and which book they come from here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
You need access to Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse (MMotM) for the playable goblin.
True.. but The new one cuts out lore, does it not?
Can I make a backstory for a character? And yall rate it? Since yall know more about this than I do? Lolol
It removes the Faerun specific lore.
I’ll try to use a basic race/build
It’s also impossible to get access to Volo’s anymore
Well, on D&D Beyond. I've seen stores still have physical copies.
I'd be down to take a look. How long is this backstory?
It got removed from print a while ago so that’s surprising, I’ve been wanting to purchase an old copy but haven’t been lucky enough to find one
Do I have to use a website to play? Since the board game is pricey here. 🥹
#character-discussion would be the place for character backstory stuff.
PM, and of course, in the proper channel to if you want many inputs
Okay I’ll pm first don’t wanna go embarrassing myself on the first day😂
The basic rules are free, and you can always use a printed character sheet
When making a backstory, it would be best to wait until you find a campaign because you'll want to make sure it is compatible with the theme, tone, and setting of the campaign you'll be playing.
I went to look for players place and said I was interested but still don’t know how I could get a grunted spot
Never bad to practice these things though, if you accept that you'll redo it when you find a campaign.
Or unless you get wild with it and make a vault of characters. Then pull the right one out for the campaign you want to get into
Guaranteed^
Good point
Man imma be up all night
That’s not going to work for most campaigns.
And I’d consider that bad advice
Worked for me, everytime
You should always create a character with the campaign in mind and with advice from your DM
What if u just apply for the campaigns u see and make one for each
Does anyone know if there are any blank character sheets in the starter set?
Most tell u the setting
There is
Ty
I've had to make minor adjustments, but I create grounded people
In all of my campaigns it’s an expectation that you create a backstory that fits my campaign with specific requirements
You can also get blank character sheets on Dmsguild website.
As a DM of some weirder campaigns, we can often tell if your character was premade. And not accepting DM input will lead to problems as well.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
I have a list of 3-4 requirements for each campaign I run that I expect players to follow when writing backstories
I have a question I am a necromancer do I have access to all the spell in the school necromancer spell
I don’t believe that’s what he was saying
Question, should I use an app or should I use real life?
No, you into have access to the spells in your class unless given access to a spell from another source
free pdf
that's your opinion, one is probably not better than the other
Ok
There's pros and cons to both in person and online play.
Oh ok I wanted to get revivify to match my necromancer vibe
How do you make a character with a character she in real life
Wizards do not get access to Revifify
where do i go to try to find a game
Print out a 5th edition blank sheet.
#find-a-game can help you out
A year ago I was in my first ever campaign. I’ve never done a campaign after that but like I haven’t even been a quarter in and everyone just stopped playing it.
so is there a vid on gow goblins work
The longevity and ability of a campaign isn going to depend heavily on the groups expectations and compatibility with each other.
To help with that it's recommended that groups have a session zero and even start out by playing one shots, single session adventures.
Can someone tell me how to make a rogue in the starter?
Set
And what do all the dye do?
Dice
You can use this Hanbooker Helper video as a quick guide to help you get started on how to build a Rogue: https://youtu.be/anybhrieUqg
Key points are:
- Rogues are glass canons.
- Can deal great damage, but can't really take that damage themselves.
- They depend on Dexterity being their highest stat.
- Intelligence or Charisma may need to be prioritized depending on how you want to build your rogue at later levels.
I want them to be a thief like my last one in that campaign I said
I just want to get used to real life dnd
Hello
Hi All! Old school dnd guy and burgeoning druid here tryna find how playing DnD on Discord works. Someone got a good link? I'm coming up empty.
I was wondering if this is were you get help about how to make your characters
?tag new online
If you're looking for a campaign to play in, #find-a-game can help you out.
If you have questions about how characters work, this is the place, but if you need help with ideas/want advice on your character, then #character-discussion is the place.
Can anyone tell me how the starter set character sheets work I want to be a rogue
This might help:
"QUICK BUILD
You can make a rogue quickly by following these suggestions. First, Dexterity should be your highest ability score. Make Intelligence your next-highest if you want to excel at Investigation or plan to take up the Arcane Trickster archetype. Choose Charisma instead if you plan to emphasize deception and social interaction. Second, choose the charlatan background."

I am confused, trying to read #learn-to-play character sheet thingy
OK, do you need to know where to find a blank one to fill in, or do you need help with what information to put on it?
I got the starter set so there’s some stuff that is not blank and some stuff that is stuff blank: inspiration, temporary hit points, CP SP EP PP
I will tell you the stats of what is not blank strength negative one dexterity +3 constitution plus one intelligence plus one wisdom +0 charisma +3 proficiency bonus +2 armor class 14 initiative +3 speed 25 feet per persuasive, wisdom 10 acrobatics +5 and handling +0
Arcana plus one athletics minus one deception +5 history plus one insight +0 intimidation +3 investigation +3+0 nature plus one perception +0 performance +5 persuasion +3 religion plus one slide of hand +5 stealth +7 survival +0 strength
I think this is it
I’m going to sleep so I’m not gonna answer for a while
Lets go just made my first character
Well done! Would you like to share it in #character-discussion ?

Hey Im new to dnd and Ive been given the role of dm as my friends believed Id be the best suited for it. Is there any way I could maybe join a game and see any tricks that could enhance my game.
And Id also like help with balancing my friends character sheets. Im not too sure on what to tell them for this. Is there a guide that anyone can recommend?
could you look at my character sheet and see if it's unbalanced or smth
it's the first i've done so i have no clue
Is it in dmdbeyond? You can link it in #character-discussion
yeah i'll link it in a sec
js did it
#dm-discussion can help out a lot with this. As for joining a game to see how it's run, that'd be #find-a-game and I'm afraid not too many games will be up to having a shadow DM. You can always have a look though.
Thank you so much Ill be going there
hey guys, quick question. How bad is it if English is not your first language but you also have no social skills thus making it extra difficult to even start looking for a group of strangers? asking for a friend.
It’s just another challenge but it doesn’t need to be an insurmountable one if folks actively work on overcoming it. There are many groups that play D&D online with folks from all over the world and varying degrees of fluency. And some games might not even be in English at all.
You can also check for Play By Post (PBP) games which would be text-only.
Thank you!
Hello, so I'm new to dnd (I've played on campaign with friends and all of baldurs gate 3) so I'm wondering how I can play another campaign with pll who are accepting towards newbies

The embed above this message is for general DnD rules
But yeah
From personal experience most PCs and DMs are quite welcoming
(Psst: that one's for #find-a-game )
(I forgot I can't read common)
ive been tryna understand how the game works for a while now and i just cant wrap my head around it
somebody pls halp
Which parts are you having trouble with
That makes it a lot easier for people to help as they have time
Do I understand that a "ranged spell attack" (e.g. fire bolt) works like a normal attack? Like they have to hit a 10 if the enemy AC is 10?
Yup.
But even though they are ranged they don't care about the enemy standing point blank in front of them?
They do, and follow the same rule (making a ranged attack when you have any enemy within 5' gives you disadvantage).
What you want in that case is a spell that they have to make a saving throw against.
Or have crossbow expert
Good to know. Thanks
The rules about that are in the Combat section, just FYI
And saving throws always are 8+ proficiency + modifier for casting spells?
For magic attacks
Just want to make sure I do understand them correctly
What about thunderwave? It says creatures are pushed away, but so they stumble and fall so they are lying? Or would they add it in the description if they fall?
It would say they were knocked prone, if that was an effect
Spells only do what they say they do
Ok, I'll make them fall down if they roll a nat 1 on the saving throw though. Seems fair enough, right?
That is not an actual rule and if you plan to use critical fails, you should discuss that with your players first
Critical fails are something I leave tables over, because I hate that homebrew mechanic with a burning passion
So no, I wouldn't consider it fair enough myself 😅
Oh course I'll ask my players. For now we stick entirely to the rules. Expect for travel time
Me and one of my friends really wants our Friendgroup to maybe get into DnD but the problem is none of us have even been in a campaign before and I would probably be the DM for our group, how do I introduce so many people to DnD when I barely know enough myself?
Im thinking about getting the D&D Starterset so we can maybe get into it
I literally had the exact thing happen to me.
One of my friends just asked "anyone interested in DND?" And bought the basics set. And then we talked about it
I talked about how I was gonna get into D&D maybe and that one of my online friends wanted to start a campaign and now one of my irl friends asked me how we would play it if we would and if its hard for us to get into when we stay at his house for a day (which is in probably around a week or less)
You wouldn't start the first time you meet. First thing you do is "session zero". Talk about rules, what everyone expects from the game, creating characters etc. though in the starter set (not to be confused with the basics set) you already have finished characters to use
i think the issue is just that i dont think my friends wanna spend that much time into getting into dnd all that much
I would love to do that stuff but idk how to introduce them to it without boring them as we go through it
You could give them characters that you've already made to speed up that part of the process (if you're not using the actual starter set characters), but D&D does take at least some time investment
If you give them characters, you could start running an adventure and tell them the rules as you go (the character sheets have most of the bonuses etc written out). But how well that works will vary with the group
Idk if that will work cuz I barely know my way around the rules myself
I should probably watch some campaigns and read into a bunch of stuff first
so I can even get a first experience
They were saying stuff like "that stuff takes days!" but I told them that short campaigns exist that last like a few sessions
There are plenty of one-shot adventures that you can finish in a single session too
I think my biggest problem is that I dont think im able to tell a good story and have it make sense for a session
I just dont want it to be boring because I'm not a good DM smh
how long does that take though
cuz my friend is asking
You can use prewritten adventures if you're worried about making up your own story
We took like... About an hour per character?
And we had to redo some because we did some mistakes
Hello☺️
It shows all dice but the d20 and I think it is being covered by the hp
Hi how's it going, my friend and I havr been looking for a group of people to play dnd with(id use the #looking for players but it wont allow me to) so if anyone would like to let us join their group thatd be awesome!
You need to type the command in any channel but the looking for ones
The #looking-for-players channel is hidden by default. You need to add it in your list through the channel or through the Channels & Roles menu to see it.
@fresh fable it shows all my dice except my d20 dice
So if i was hosting a dnd campaing with a custom theme, for ex JJK or hollow knight. Would that be a community type game?
Try reinstalling the app
#ddb-support could help further
I am very new to DND and have done one half of a campaign and would love to get a campaign going for me and a couple friends

But no, I'm not familiar with any adventure modules that are specifically about political administration.

Reading through the starter set rule book and trying to understand attack modifiers while looking at the premade character sheets. The wizard has a short sword and the sheet say it gets a + 4. I can’t figure out why it gets that though. It has a 0 in strength and I don’t know how to tell from the sheet if the character is proficient with a short sword. Any ideas?
Shortswords are finesse. Do they have +2 for the Dex modifier?
Ahh yes, a +2 to dexterity
If you look in the bottom left corner, there should be a section that says Weapon Proficiencies. If either shortswords specifically or 'martial weapons' are mentioned, then they can add their proficiency modifier to attack rolls. And then yeah, like ratatoskr said, shortswords have the finesse feature.
When making an attack with a finesse weapon, you use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls. You must use the same modifier for both rolls.
Thank you both! Makes complete sense now. I see that the weapons table properties for the short sword are finesse and light. Then referencing weapon properties I see where it says finesse allows you to use dexterity.
No problem!
I also overlooked the part on my sheet that said he’s proficient in short swords.
Anyone got a simple way to describe the difference between a wizard necromancer and a warlock
wizards = learn magic by reading and practice
warlock = get magic from patron either by deals or some other way of accessing patrons powers
That's good thank you
Warlock made a pact with a devilish entity, necromancer studied entirely by themselves
To be honest they dont have much in common honk
#looking-for-players or look up online
