Yeah, pick whatever you think sounds cool
Whatever fits the type of character your going for
what spells dose evocation get?
They blast stuff. Magic missile. Fireball. Energy Resistance. That sort of thing
learned the basics of dnd rolls, stats and character creation gonna continue tomorrow :P still need to learn abt races advantages n stuff
I did some research and saw that if I go conjuration I get wish, my friend wants that and I am the only class who can get it
They are cleric but refuse to do research so here I am trying to do it for all of us
š
i would not pick a subclass just because you want a single 9th level spell
okay thanks
it will take ages to get, and if its just for that you wont have as much fun
just pick something cool!
well I start ( according to my research) 9 spells
any recomendations?
just a question what the diffrence betwen roll20 and roll20 VTT
ah ok
Hi everyone, i m new here, can someone explain the joining a campaign system for me? I wanna be a player
Hi! I'm going to be honest have always loved the concept of DND but has never understood how to work the interface or much more would love some help š
What do you mean "work the interfact"? D&D is a tabletop roleplaying game, the "interface" is books and pens and pecils and dice
You can post an ad yourself in #750812887697588356 (follow the instructions in #find-a-game) or reply to the ads in #looking-for-players. Communicate, find a mutually convenient time, and you should be set.
Hello
Thks
Hi all, virtual newbie here, havent played in over 30 years. Looking to connect with my sons who play. I have created a character on D&D Beyond, is there a way to play any online quests just to learn the game again and level up some since both of my son's characthers are higher level?
There are a lot of learn to play games on startplaying.com you can try to refresh your memory š

Hello
I found that sorcerer, druid, ranger, and cleric are the easiest to play to get used to using magic in DND
i wish 12 year old me knew this before playing a warlock
how do i find a group of people to play with online? like with a dm and other players. iām a minor and im just very shy but i love everything about dnd and been wanting to play for a while :3
use the find a game channel
Also check out your local game store and game club at your school.
@limber quartz
This guy's sus
Sorry if this is a silly question. We are going to give dnd beyond a go. Can I use real dice and input the number on my digital character sheet?
I think so
New to this. Donāt know where to start. Is the players handbook digital worth it? Iāve watched YouTube videos just wanna know where to start thanks!
Itās recommended to read some of it

The basic rules for how to play are free. You can find a link to them in the bot post above. The basic rules only include 1 subclass for each class, and a few basic spells and monsters. The playerās handbook will include many more options for customizing your character. You can try the game out using just the basic rules at first, then purchase more options when you feel ready.
Thanks! š wish me luck
what class resemble samurai the most (outside the actual class) between champion, eldtritch knight and battlemaster?
hi im new to dnd
i want to make a wizard character but i dont know what school to join, im thinking evocation or abjuration
Battle Master most likely, but there is a fighter subclass called samurai that you could play too

im assuming this is it
check the basic rules page
are you looking to make an optimized wizard, or to create a wizard with a certain story/theme?
i was curious what other alternative you could have (wjhen it's not avavible XD :P)
Welcome! The bot post above has so great resources to get you started, plus we have a #learn-to-play channel with even more detailed guides
im not sure
oh my goodness
i do NOT understand the rules that much : (
i have been reading them for the past few days but they are still confusing
same
If you have any specific questions, weāre more than happy to help! Ask us anything!
chronurgy, divination, and bladesinger tend to be the strongest wizard subclasses, in that order
if optimization is what ur going for
i mean, i want to understand the basic rules. But when i go to them they are confusing for me
Evocation is 10/10
: (
why divination? ive checked the spells on dnd beyond but they mainly seem just getting information
portent
whats that
the gist of it is that divination wizards can turn any dice roll into a pre-determined result
thats sound really good
and i have been reading on druids, because i think they are cool, but then they are confusing too
If youād prefer to watch guides instead of reading, the Handbooker Helper YouTube series is incredibly helpful. That is also linked in the bot above
ok
so if a roll a high number i can use that as my attack roll
i will watch that
yes
or if i roll a low one i can use it as a monster's roll?
yes
also whats an arcane tradition feature? i know that an arcane tradition is one of the schools, but whats a feature of it
so real quick, i have been reading on druids and when it talks about wild shape it also talks about a challenge thingy
let me check what its called
Challenge Rating
i think druids can cast spells
they're features graned by your arcane tradition
every arcane tradition gives a feature at levels 2, 6, 10, and 14
cool
yeah, i know that. they are able to cast nature based spells, from what ive seen, and they can change shape to a creature the have seen
All monsters are classified by a āchallenge ratingā (CR) which roughly translates to how strong they are or how hard they are to beat in combat. A monsterās CR is listed in their stat block.
how do i find the features? are they in the players handbook or the dnd beyond website?
Both
ok, but what has that got to do with wild shape
you have to see it to become it, right
or have i read something wrong
some spells ive seen require you to touch the object to like cast a spell on it. does it mean you can't use it on yourself?
As a Druid, you can transform into beasts (animals) so long as they are below a certain CR value
oh, that makes sense
You can place a hand on yourself to cast touch range spells on yourself
i think that at lv 2 you CR is like 1/4 or something
Correct
yes, that was off of memory. Anyways i really think that druids are cool but are they good for beginners
is the school of abjuration beginner friendly? i read on a website that evocation is easy and suited for combat, but not really elsewhere
Any class can work for a beginner. None of them are so complicated that you canāt learn it. But in general, spellcasting classes are always going to be more complicated than classes that do not cast spells, and Druids have the added wrinkle of Wild Shape, so they are a bit more complicated than most classes
are spellcasting classes better?
yes
also the rules have got me completely confused, because i have played a game with my friends but they used different rules and different attributes. So its taking awhile for me to switch mindsets
they tend to have more options and more power compared to martials, especially later on
Generally speaking, yes. But that only matters if you are playing a super optimized and super difficult game. 9 times out of 10, whatās ābetterā does not matter at all
also for the spells that say you must touch an object or someone willing, does that mean you cannot use it for yourself?
you can
also i have seen in the book where it talks about hit die, what is that
ik what it is
i think
you spend those during short rests to regain HP
Hit die are a resource you have. It determines what your max HP is, and during a short rest you can expend them to heal
ok, but what type of die are they
ok, what about druid
Hit Points and Hit Dice
Whenever a creature takes damage, that damage is subtracted from its hit points. Creatures with more hit points are more difficult to kill.
Your hit point maximum is determined by your hit dice, both at 1st level and when you gain a level. Your class and level determine your available hit dice. You can also spend hit dice to recover hit points during a short rest, and recover spent hit dice during a long rest.
When you drop to 0 hit points, you either die outright or fall unconscious. Temporary hit points can provide a buffer against damage to protect your actual hit points.
i think it said a die 8
Druids have a d8 for their hit die, yes
ok
what??? how did it know? cna i ask it or is it a command
ohhh
That was a command
At level 1, your HP is the maximum value of your hit die, plus your constitution modifier. When you level up, you gain HP equal to your choice of either a roll of that hit die, or take the average (5 in your case) and add your con modifier again
the average value of a d8 is 4.5, rounded up so 5
5 is the average value of a d8
oh
what is spending hit die? is it you have a certain number of rolls each level and when you do a short rest you spend it to heal the amount you roll?
so every level up i get plus 5 hp
5 + CON mod
so what is the CON mod
Con modifier is you Constitution modifier, which is determined by your constitution score. One of your 6 ability scores
im still confused
on every level you gain a hit die, during a short rest you can use any number of these hit die to regain HP points.
You get half of all your hit die on a long rest
imma go watch the video that you suggested
So, you have a number of hit die equal to your level. You gain a new one every time you level up. You āspendā the hit die to heal during a short rest, then you get back half of your maximum number of hit die when you long rest
so you roll the dice to determine how many hit points you get back in a short rest?
how does combat work? i know that you roll initiaitve, and take turns doing actions. what exactly is an action?
That is not something I can easily explain in a few messages. Combat is an entire chapter of the basic rules
oh
you can look at https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Combat for an explanation of what combat looks like in dnd
the spell will state in its description what the casting time is - or if you're asking if you can get extra bonus actions with magic, i don't believe any spell can grant you another bonus action
Spells donāt āgiveā bonus actions, but some ācostā a bonus action to cast. The casting time of a spell is listed in the spellās description
but the basic rules say "Various class features, spells, and other abilities let you take an additional action on your turn called a bonus action."
yes, that means they will use the bonus action rather than an action
oh
A bonus action is a normal part of your turn, but you can only use that bonus action to do something if that something says it costs a bonus action to do.
You cannot upgrade or downgrade an action type
are actions only in combat? if so, does the dm tell you that combat has started?
My slow brain is starting to understand š
(going off of sage advice here, i'm not sure if that's considered RAW) the actions in the combat section are only meant to be used after initiative is rolled
Combat starts when you roll for initiative. You can take actions and bonus actions outside of combat if you want, but the distinction of them as such does not matter in that situation. āInitiativeā is an abstraction of time, and an āactionā or ābonus actionā is a representation of how much time it takes to do something. Outside of combat, when you arenāt being pressed for time, then you are free to do things at whatever pace you wish
The DM decides when combat is initiated, usually calling for initiative at the first sign of hostility.
Outside is combat is "real time."
Combat is turn-based.
so combat is like a game mode?
Combat is turn-based because us humans can't do millions of operations a second like computers can.
can someone please send me the dnd beyond link for the arcane tradition features?
Iām not really sure what you mean by that, but if youāre asking if combat uses different rules for outside of combat, the answer is yes
The DM decides outside of combat how fast time moves ahead. For long journeys that could take days, weeks, or even months the DM can handwave the passage of time
wait nevermind can someone please send it sorry
it's further down on the main wizard description page
but i only see school of evocation
it may only show the ones you have access to
It's the only free one that comes with the free Basic Rules
slightly perplexed as to why i would have blood magic wizard if i don't own the book for that but that's not a conversation that needs to be here
The Basic Rules only comes with one sub-class per class.
oh i put a copy of the players handbook on hold at my library tho
Itās probably being shared with you
ah that would make sense
what's the best race for a wizard? i feel like high elf focuses too much on wizard stats and for example i always have a -1 modifier using the standard stats (15, 14, 13, etc)
high elf focusing on wizard stats is what makes it good for wizards
dnd tends to reward specializing rather than being a generalist, so pumping INT and getting access to extra cantrips/spells is a good thing
so i should choose high elf?
but then which stat should i choose for my -1 modifier? i feel like strength and charisma are the least important, but strength is important for carrying things
if you're interested in optimizing, then high elf is a great pick
you're right that str or cha can be dumped, and as a wizard you won't need to lug around a big suit of armor or anything, you can get away with a lower carrying capacity and still be able to hold all your starting gear - str is a pretty popular dump stat for anyone who doesn't scale off of it
plus if you get a party member who has high strength you can bond with them by making them your bag carrier (bad advice for making friends)
What species are there?
there exist multitudes <- link text
Wow, I'm new to DND so I'm like trying to know everything
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The free Basic Rules have the "core" playable races. Supplemental books have more but the DM decides if they're allowed in their campaign setting.
hi im back!
im back too
š
so i have been watching the rules so far, and i think i am half-way through
Hi hi :)
i kinda wish that i could join a game, but i dont know the full rules yet š¦
You don't necessarily need to know all the rules to play. Knowing most of them and having a general understanding of the game can be enough. Then you can learn more of the rules as you play. Lots of groups are willing to teach.
like what groups, and how could i find them
i tried to check the find a game channel, but i got confused
can you send me the video too?
A warforged sounds fun
sure
You can make a post advertising yourself in #750812887697588356 and you can check out games that are looking for players in #looking-for-players
You don't need to memorize the rules but rather familiarize yourself with the fundamentals
Check out the thread under the #looking-for-players posts and you can see about joining a game
can the dm tell you the rules when you play?
Of course š
thanks
sixton
the thing is called handbooker helper
Is a warforged good?
Warforged can be good yes, but all species can be good. Depends on what you want to play and who your character is.
Put less burden on the DM and learn the rules yourself. The DM can help with reminders
ok thanks
Okk
Iām pretty new to dnd, and Iām having my first āseriousā session, my character is going to be zatanna from DC, all I know right now is that she is probs going to be a half elf sorcerer, but Iām not sure any other specifics, does anyone know DC stuff and DnD stuff and is willing to help me make the character?
#character-discussion works be a better place to ask for help defining your character
I believe that a good dm would
š
Cause im basically brand new
i mean, i know a bit about DND. But not much
i have only done it like one time, and that was with the rules a bit changed
and by a bit i mean a lot
i also can't find a good group to join
For bag of beans, it says deal 4d5 fire damage if its contents are spilled onto the ground. Can I dump like half the bag and save the other half?
what
no
oh wait
the 4d5 means roll the 5 sided 4 times
it's the other way around
Blud just nuh uhed you
oopsies
opsie daisy
yeah what he said
W
There is nothing in the item text that allows for that.
So it's going to be an
damn so I have to dump everything onto the ground?
By RAW, yes. By asking your DM, maybe
Should I get the dnd basics handbook? I only get to play dnd for a certain period of times a year so idk if Is worth it
thank you
I don't think the item actually changes anything based on how many beans you have left, so you could always wait and just dump the last one
what is RAW
The free basic rule sshould be enough, then if you find that you want to become mor einvested, then get the pHB
Rules as Written
ok
I went straight to the PHB because I knew I was going to become invested in it, even if I have yet to play it
Sounds good, but I can't really get more invested cuz my situations summarized is that I moved countries and only get together with my dnd friends on summers and even that is just a chance
Unless there is any way to play dnd online?
Tons of ways to play online!
Every situation is different. You definitely don't need the PHB to play
And yes, it's very possible to play online
ranging from a simplistic call, all the way to dedicated websites and programs
Where could I find dedicated websites and/or programs?
Because by where I live we speak German but my German is not the best and I don't know anybody that even knows what dnd is
i dont know where to find a group
Well, there are channels here. In addition, there is Roll20 as a dedicated website.
So you do know where to find a game, you jsut cant find a group
That's the only place here to find a game, but it's good to cast your net wide
Finding a D&D group is a marathon, not a sprint
#learn-to-play also has generally handy info, and iamrazorwing wrote another guide with options for how to find games #dnd-newcomers message
can someone please help me. I dont know how to convince my friends to play dnd with me š¦
Playing with people that donāt want to play can be an unpleasant experience
But if theyāre on the fence, try and think about why you think each person will like it, like if theyāve played certain games or like fantasy books etc
I dont think there is much we can offer here.
If they dont want to play, then dont tryt o force them.
If they're just unsure, you could try a one-shot and see if they like it
That way they don't have to commit to something longer and might at least be willing to see if they'll actually have fun
But if they're vehemently opposed and/or actually don't enjoy it, there's not too much you can do there. Unless they can give you fixable reasons they aren't interested (like they prefer RP over combat, that kind of thing can be adjusted)
To build on this, HOW someone tries to find a group will impact their chances of success.
A common pitfall new players fall into is making a single looking for DM post and expecting other players and Dungeon Masters to come to them.
This won't work often because there are more players than GMs out there.
The better approach is to respond to posts where DMs are looking for players and responding with specifics of a campaign that you are interested in.
Hi! Ive been reading a lot about DnD but Ive never play

Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice
Hey I need to ask a weird question sort of thing
Ask away
guess today is the day I sit down and lean how to build a new person so I can play Wednesday
hi guys~ im trying to build my first ever dnd character and im looking for very basic advice on how to pick the right class/attributes to fit with the backstory im going for! does anyone have a few mins to spare?
@open nebula has a few minutes to spare, he is a DM
what kind of concept are you thinking of? (also this may be a #character-discussion topic?)
He is def not sitting in a class rn
lmao??
its honestly not a very complex question,i have this idea in my head based on a game i played, where the mc has a curse that makes it so whenever she directly touches someone they go mad, kinda like either to kill her or fall in love with her , it feels like something that would be pretty easy to build [maybe sorcerer?] but im an extreme noob with some bg3 exeprience so im not sure how to do that
perhaps a college of glamour bard? this is the description of the subclass:
The bards of this college are regarded with a mixture of awe and fear. Their performances are the stuff of legend. These bards are so eloquent that a speech or song that one of them performs can cause captors to release the bard unharmed and can lull a furious dragon into complacency. The same magic that allows them to quell beasts can also bend minds. Villainous bards of this college can leech off a community for weeks, abusing their magic to turn their hosts into thralls. Heroic bards of this college instead use this power to gladden the downtrodden and undermine oppressors.
not quite to the level of people going mad, but then again there's nothing that can really replicate that in dnd unless you want to venture into homebrew
no i dont want homebrew
bard is cool but i thought about making it more like a dark curse..doesnt feel so bard-y?
i see i see
isnt there some necromancy thingies or spells i can learn that will be fitting for that lore?
you can pick up necromancy spells even as a bard, for what it's worth
i know from bg3 charm exists..but its not exactly what im looking for
like a charm spell
i guess it cant be done unless its homebrew?
you cant really acomplish that withou homebrew yeah
some enchantment spells can also verge on causing madness or enthralling people
hi! maybe it's an incredibly basic question but what exactly is a oneshot?
Hi. I want to learn and have started reading the PHB. I'm only on ch 2 and am 3 hours into a Youtube video of a game. Is this the right way to learn?
how can i tweak it to make it more compatible
basically just make it more amibigious?
not a direct touch thingy?
It would also be a good idea to consult ur DM about this idea to make sure no problems occur when u start playing
its a short campaign that can be completed in about 1-3 sessions
i have no DM im atm just roleplaying the idea of roleplaying lolol but these answers are really helpful! ty!
many thanks!
you can try looking at the bard and sorcerer subclasses and seeing if any of those match the vibe you want
those are both charisma-based classes and can access enchantment/illusion spells that might help replicate the effect you're looking for. it won't quite be like a permanent aura of touch causing madness or obsession, but you may be able to get close with a build catered towards charming, mind-controllling, and madness-inflicting
if it's madness you're interested in, aberrent mind sorcerer is, well, aberrent-minded
i dipped my toes into an outlander sorcerer in bg3 and i really liked that, but im asking more on how to tweak my basic narrative to fit
should i make the character's curse more ambigious?
oh i see! yes, it would help to change the nature of the curse so that it's easier to reflect in the mechanics of your character's abilities
the touch activation for example, and having it permanently active, are hard to re-create without homebrew
maybe i can make it more random and not based on touch that way it could be more easily applicable?
my suggestion would be to find analogues for it in spells or class features, and to treat your usage of those features as your character's curse activating
You could make it dice roll based, so whenever you touch someone you roll to see if it has any effect
Differs from person to person. For me, i learn best by playing. But a good general understanding to start off with is always good
otherwise, as long as you are focusing on the concept before checking the mechanics, you always risk running into it being homebrew-dependent
but fwiw it's not unreasonable to create a homebrew mechanic for it if you're flexible about how exactly it should work
thats an interesting point
yeah i know homebrew is cool but im trying to exeprience the real dnd exeprience before delving into niche fan stuff
ty for the help!
completely understandable, and np!
im not adverse to a deep dive/learning session to see how i can fit the mechanics to the story but where do i start? @granite bloom maybe i should just read all the sorcerer spells? since im pretty set on wanting my first character to be sorcerer?
my problem is reading is overwhelming
that's valid
and theres alot to read lol
i would first check the subclasses, sifting through spells is a lot to keep track of
like seeing if any of their features could be repurposed as your character's abilities and curse
i thought maybe spells would be good cause from what i understand from bg3 for sorcerers theres like a limited amount of spells they know?
is it still alot lol
sorcerers will all have the same spell list (with the exception of the subclasses who get extra spells they can pick - but again, you will see those when you check the subclass features) so you can pick those once you settle on a subclass
ohh ok good im on the right track then
less than any other spellcaster except for warlocks to my knowledge, it's 6 cantrips and 15 spells at maximum, so if you start at level one you know 4 cantrips and 2 spells
im assuming its less overwhelming than being a wizard and wanting to know every single spell u can learn in dnd right? lol
in a way, yea - it can be hard deciding which spells to pick since you're so limited, but once you lock those spells in, you don't have to worry about what to prepare day by day
ty you helped me alot ā¤ļø
no problem, glad it was useful :]
Literally every table has homebrew table rules
I wouldn't say literally every
but it's very common, yeah
Mine has "no PvP,no multiclassing"
Others are "no out of rp talk"
Some are "keep your death saves hidden"
No sane person runs dnd 5e by the book
No sane person runs dnd 5e by the book /j
you have a very good point, but don't assume sanity lol
Or else people would be jumping 700ft and take 5d6 damage all the time
Thats more than fair
Hi, could someone explain ability scores to me? I only thought only modifiers were relevant. Like if a DM said roll for constitution and I got a +2, I just thought it would be the number on the dice +2. So what does the ability score actually mean and how is it used? Sorry if Iām not making sense š
Your score dictates your modifier.
The central point of your score is to set your modifiers
there are also creatures that reduce your score so the exact score is relevant that way and the score also determines the modifier
along with something like chainmail armor requiring you to have a 13 in strength
Also for multiclassing
Oh ok, thank you šš¼ how does it dictate the modifier? If someone had 14 for intelligence for instance, what does that make their modifier?
Or, -5 + score/2
what?
i think you mlean score
Oh yeah
yeah it makes sense like that lol
No, yeah thatās a fair point
Thx guys š
any tips for making a good character?
Just make someone youāre interested in, and make sure to give them enough personality to keep YOU invested in them
Iād also recommend working with the dm, or even just some guy, I find just kinda bouncing ideas off someone helpful
Iāve got a question about steering players in a campaign. Where is the best place to ask?
As a DM? #dm-discussion would be the best spot!
Guys, I'm struggling with the roleplaying aspect of D&D haha. Granted, I've only had 1 session - but does it get any better? Like, my character rolled a nat 20 in convincing goblins to unionize against their bugbear master, and our DM told me to describe what she did and I just fumbled over my words LOL
There was another moment during our first battle where my character was the last one standing and rolled a crit that won the battle. DM tells me to describe how she casts her Firebolt and I guess they were expecting something cool, or funny? Mind went blank š
I have over 300 hours with BG3 so I don't have any trouble picking up the mechanics, but roleplaying is hard 𤣠Any tips please?
Unfortunately the only real advice for getting better at RP is to keep doing it, lol. The more you get comfortable with your character, your table, and TTRPGs in general the easier it will get but you just need to keep trying. Also it's worth noting that you don't need to be an actor, you're not putting on a performance, you're playing a game
I see so I'll just have to soldier through the embarrassment haha! Thanks
Just remember, it's a game and everyone's there to have fun imagining wizards and goblins and dragons. It's inherently silly! No need to take yourself seriously either, get in the groove and go with the flow!

The article linked above has some tips you might find useful
Hi everyone, as a new player and new to D&D game, what tips can you give me? I also know that the game requires books, which book should I get first?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Start with the free basic rules (see bot message above) and if you like the game enough, consider getting the Players Handbook.
Would thia be the right place to ask what skill proficiencies i should choose for a half elf sorcerer?
Here or #character-discussion
Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series on YouTube would be my recommendation for where to begin. There are tons of others out there as well, but no sense diving in too deep that you drown at the start.
I have a short list of player tips here: #dnd-newcomers message
It'd be easy to hit you with a bunch of "Do this, don't do this" recommendations, but I think the gist is: this is a group game so be a team player as much as possible. Communicate to solve problems. Remember it's a game so have fun; try not to worry about getting things "wrong" or being embarrassed.
I'm having bad luck finding any one-shot games to get in on. The instructions on how to post in the # find-a-game area isn't very user friendly, either. Where can I find a one-shot to get my newbie feet wet?
Discord has a search function, and you can apply that to specific channels, so search one-shot or oneshot in #looking-for-players. When you see one you want to play in, post in the attached thread and hope you get invited!
Have you also looked into Adventurers League?
No. What's Adventurers League?
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
⢠#al-admin-questions ā Ask the AL Admins questions
⢠#adventurers-league ā Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
⢠#1050206875079155742 ā Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
⢠#al-dm-discussion ā [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
⢠#al-dungeoncraft ā [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
Is there a channel where people usually stream dnd campaigns? Im interested in spectating one.
The bot post above has more details, but it's the organized play program of D&D. It uses the same ruleset so you can take a character from one AL DM's game and drop it in another, no problem. They run one-shots because you may not always play with the same group.
We don't have anything like that, but you can find games on YouTube and Twitch running at almost any time of day!
Okay thank you
If you don't have a game store that hosts AL events, you can also find one-shots on StartPlaying, a site where paid DMs run games. But searching for D&D 5e one-shots will net you some free results as well!
What setup do people usually run when doing dnd online? Like what applications or websites are usually good for doing so?
That'll vary a ton. Some use a virtual tabletop like Roll20, Foundry, or Owlbear Rodeo for tokens and maps. Some might not bother with that aspect. D&D Beyond and some VTTs like R20 handle character sheet management, but some use pen and paper (despite playing online). The real essential thing is dice or some random number generator and a way to communicate. Discord is pretty standard there.
This D&D Beyond article (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online) gives a good overview.
The DM will likely decide what tools will be used, so don't get bogged down in trying to learn every possible set-up before you get into a specific game!
As a new player Iām excited to 3d print my own miniatures but Iām stuck on how people find the exact players to 3d print. I got the dnd dragons of storm wreck isle. If I want to 3d print one of the dragons from the chapters how do I find the file?
Hi. I came across this site yesterday. You are able to buy (or get a subscription) to design and download STL files of miniatures that you can print at home.
https://eldritch-foundry.com/
Check out the #dnd-minis channel
Okay, can you be more specific? What have you read? What have you watched?
Tks, for the reply and the tips
Tks, for the reply and the tip and will take a look at you posted before, tks a lot

Hello
What do I do my DM gave me a phase spider and the ability to enlarge her and gave me 2 times damage if I get a nat 20 to hit with her
I can do 176 damage per turn ( less then 0.01 % chance )
Sounds complicated! What exactly was your question?
Iām 5th level
Thatās not really a D&D newcomerās question - this channel is more for how to get started in D&D
How to solve it so itās more balanced we are a bundle of beginner
Remove the ability to enlarge her and the extra crit damage?
If you want it weaker, those are the obvious things
Ok Iāll tell him that thanks
Though just to check, crits are normally double damage anyway. Are you getting extra damage on top of that?
Yes for being enlarged
Then yeah, removing the enlargement (or even switching the phase spider to something weaker like a giant spider) would remove power from having it
Cool
can I give someone temporary hit points every round would it just keep stacking?
I dont think so.
You can only have one set of temporary hit points at a time. Think of it like this:
If an effect gives you 5 THP, and then a second effect gives you 3 THP, you can't have them both. You'll have to pick one.
darn I was hoping to do it every round so they can almost be invincible
This rule exists to prevent players from being almost invincible
thought my artificer was cracked
How are you giving temp hp each round?
Probably artillerist Eldritch cannon I assume

Thanks! See you in like tomorrow when I get the basics
Just ask your questions for things you don't understand here and someone will answer.
Read the rules. Lessen the load on a DM if you know the fundamental rules already.
If you go into a game knowing nothing that means the game has to be constantly paused to teach you the rules. By doing this you'll less likely to be invited to a table.
only if it worked
Hello. I am a new dnd player looking to finish creating my character and start playing!

#750812887697588356 hey i created my character and am ready for adventure!
That's not the command - please read #find-a-game carefully
The command starts with a /looking-for and then the bot will provide you some options to pick from depending on what kind of LFG post you want to create.
Hi :) I'm currently creating a character sheet based on point buy and I'm not really sure where to begin, does anyone have any rec's on any guides or youtube channels so I can figure this out?

Ok tysm!
As a rule of thumb, always set constitution and yoru characters priary stat at 16
If you play a rogue,con/dex,if you play a wizard,con/int etc etc
The easiest method will be to consider your character concept, and rank each of the six ability scores from strongest to weakest, based on how you imagine your character would be
My Leonin Cleric for example is very Wise, and being a large individual has high Strength and Constitution as well. I want them to be relatively well learned and a good preacher, so I'll invest a bit in Intelligence and Charisma as well. As a flaw however I want to play them as really clumsy, so I'll take a bit out of Dexterity
That leaves me with a list of scores from highest to lowest: Wisdom > Strength > Constitution > Intelligence > Charisma > Dexterity
That makes a lot of sense, thank you. I do have one question though because my DM mentioned something about "69 + race" and I'm not sure if he's referring to Exp or something else since I assumed point buy is normally 27 points
Yeah I'm not entirely sure what that could mean. 69 point-buy points is an extreme amount to use for that, so it very likely wont be that
I believe that might refer to the sum of all stats that will result from point buy, before adding racial bonuses
E.g. someone with a 10 in every stat would have a sum of 60.
I think that might be it, so what he's referring to is before race stats my stats will be a total of 69?
That makes sense, since the sum of the Standard Array is 72
I believe PB should give you 71 before racials
Just ask him what he meant
Nvm Point Buy can give a range of sums, playing around with it I got totals between 71 & 75
Hello I'm new here
hi. I'm oh so very new and in dire need of guidance.
like, I'm overwhelmed by the amount of info I need to take in, so now I'm just confused and I don't know what to do

thanks, I'll come back here once I'm finished
what is the dump stat of monk?
hi everyone
Intelligence
Usually int
strenght can also be dumped
if you wanna go dex fist monk
Your list of prioritys should be:
Dex,Con,wis
hi
if i could only choose 2 in one party, which ones would i choose out of barbarian, fighter, and monk?
fighter and barbarian are fairly straightforward
But I'd play whatever sounds fun for you and dits well with the D&D group and game you're playing in.
what are the most common dices used in dnd
d20, d12, d10/d100, d8, d6, and d4
check the handbook helper playlist on youtube
the second video is DIce 101
i watched it
thank u fren
I'd again say play whatever you feel is most interesting/fun for you.
Monk is a fine choice too.
ok
When playing a campaign with just two Player Characters, I like to play a foil to the other character. If one is playing a hulking barbarian, a small intelligent wizard would contrast well
oh its not just the two of us
Ah, my appologies
theres five people interested
we have a wizard (attacking spells), cleric (healer), bard (support), and 2 fighting classes
but we dont know which ones
Can't go wrong with whatever you pick imo, as others have said simply play whatever you vibe with
More or less yeah
My dad knows a lot of dnd and he has a Ranger he seems to enjoy using him
The difference is more apparent in the flavor. A fighter has formal training and applies strategy in their martial methods. A barbarian is just full on reckless abandon that overcomes challenges with their rage
Yeah they can take a hit
im looking at the monk page of ddb rn
and monk looks really good especially patiant defense
wow monk's diamond soul is so good
but how do ki points work?
is it like hit die?
The class describes at what level you get ki and how much you have per monk class level
As Critical Role's Marisha Ray states in campaign two, dope monk sh*t.
it isn't really clear
Its a resource you can expend. You have a number of ki points equal to your level to spend on cool stuff
You get them back on a Short Rest (im sure you'll read about short rests later)
i read about them
also can monks and barbarians use fighting styles?
ive only soon them in the fighter class table
Afraid not, you only get the features listed in your specific class regardless of how closesly aligned they may feel in flavor
ok tysm
Is there still a command for paid gming?
Yes - please read #find-a-game carefully (and it's threads) as it explains the commands
I meant the one that explains it.
I pointed you to the channel that has all the information including the bot commands to use to create posts in #paid-looking-for-game
Am I misunderstanding you?
Yes. Itās ok. There used to be a !paiddm command
Or something. Iām assuming itās gone now
It's /looking-for paid which, again, is detailed in #find-a-game
No. Itās cool. Itās gone now. Thanks though.
So just start typing that command in any discussion channel and the bot will give you the appropriate form to fill out to create the post
Again the information and instructions are detailed in the channel #find-a-game
It was an automation that explained the merits of paidgming. Similar to !new
They must have got rid of those commands when they swapped the servers.
The FAQ section in the Server Guide (#frequently-asked-questions message) has the public bot commands we have here - and yes, most likely many of the old server commands were not brought over here to the (formerly) DnDBeyond server which was turned into the official D&D Discord server.
Honestly super appreciated. No longer there
hi
im new to dungeons and dragons, do u know how character sheet points are decided??? Like i saw a youtube video explaining it but kinda curious what if i just max everything. Is there any constraints ?

oh sure bro thanks š
I've never played Dnd I've made a Character so far so what should I do next?
I'm new too but I'm watching people play on YouTube
now that you have a character sheet, just make sure you have a decent grasp on the game rules (as in, read through the basic rules if you havenāt already) and you can start looking for a group to play with
thereās #find-a-game if you donāt know where to start your search
When you make a character do you roll for abilities before or after choosing a species, class, and background?
up to your dms discretion/your discretion.
typically i do it before, but its not a big deal tbh.
itās up to you, but knowing your class first can help you figure out what stats to prioritize and thus where you allocate your rolls
And wait to roll abilities in front of the dm?
thatās good practice and most dms require it to accept rolled stats, so yea
Ok ty
It's a discussion server, you talk about and ask questions relating to D&D
In this channel specifically people ask and answer questions regarding getting started with D&D
Ah I thought this was a server for looking for games
You can also look for games here if you like, using the instructions in #find-a-game (Use the bot commands to post an ad for yourself/game or just reply in the threads to anyone that interests you)
Yep, game finding is part of this server
check out #channel-guide to see what this server offers
That's a big ask, but you'd need to use #750812887697588356
to post, follow the instructions in #find-a-game
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
What do you mean?
what character classes that are friendly for begginers?
I'm not exactly an expert but my dad and multiple others keep saying that the best classes are the ones that sound most fun
ok
It really just depends on what you want to do
Hello! I'm new here and I'd like to ask a question. Regarding the core rulebooks, I'm interested in buying the initial 3 now, but I saw that they will be updated
Playerās Handbook (Sept 2024)
Dungeon Masterās Guide (Nov 2024)
Monster Manual (Feb 2025)
If I buy the current versions now, when the new ones come out, will mine be automatically updated? Or would I need to buy the new versions again?
I'm interested in purchasing the digital versions, on Beyond
It's not been announced exactly how the release of the revised rule books will work, but it is not likely there will be any updates made to the 2014 books
The closest we have to something like this is the release of Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse which consolidated and updated two books; Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes
Those two books were not updated, but instead were made "Legacy Content". This meant they were no longer available to be purchased digitally and I believe no longer printed
okay zo i finished making my character (probably uhmm try making them a better sheet) what do i do next? find a game? alzo i finished learning abt the very basics.. (Rolls, stats, saving throws etc..) what do i learn about next? the races, the spells n stuff?
Honestly just whatever you find most interesting first, since thatās most important. If you want to hop straight into a game you can go to #find-a-game , but it never hurts to read more š
okey
how should i go about making my character and my character sheet? Ive played dnd before but the campaign went on for only 5 sessions and i didnt understand the way it was explained to me

The basic rules (linked above) have a step by step walkthrough on character creation!
tysm!
I'm not sure if my character I've made is balanced? can a character have 2 classes
yes
that is called multiclassing
You can multiclass provided you meet certain requirements, but it's not recommended if you're a new player.
Also, if itās a level one character, they def shouldnāt be multi classes
Interesting, thank you for the info, so with my character I used DND beyond to make the character. I was wondering if it would be fair making my own spells/imagination spells
Not without dm Input
You can never just make up whatever abilities you want
If you're new, you probably shouldn't be making up your own content as you're still likely learning the game mechanics. Describing them however you like is probably safe.
And yes, the DM needs to allow/approve of any created content.
If you intend to use them
If youāre just making stuff up for fun, youāve discovered the truth of dnd
helooo~
So if my abilities are fair towards the DM and the game it can be allowed in that specific session right? Not all sessions are allowing imaginative abilities if i pressume
That's really up to the DM.
If the dm decides youād an use it, yes
Whether itās āfairā is really null and void
Alrightt so after creating my main character should I make a back up one?
How could I make a dryad player character? ;3;
Dryads aren't an official race. The closest would probably be... The Hexblood lineage from the Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft supplement? Though it's more of a fey-cursed race.
I'd recommend sticking to official races for your first character.
If you don't have a game/DM, you should have multiple character concepts and have gone through the process of character creation. They'll have to likely change to suit the specifics of the game you join.
I have multiple characters ;-;
Totally up to you - I do think having several character concepts that you can tweak and adjust to fit the D&D game/group you play with is not a bad idea.
So joining a game/group, will they need my character info sheet from DND beyond?
Your DM and group will determine what tools they will use to support their playing D&D. Many groups are fine with DnDBeyond character sheets but you may need to send a public link to the sheet to your DM. Other groups use other tools.
So talk with your DM about it.
Quick question, is there bleach and muriatic acid in dnd? And if so can i craft chemistry on a glass bottle that can break when tossed on stone? For example on a densed cave with no air flow
asking for a friend
Well⦠there is acid.
Idk if you can find bleach.
Or convince your dm to let you do that
Assume that D&D is a game and not a real world physics simulationā¦
Ask your DM but be prepared for the answer to be āno this setting does not do real world chemistryā
but, but. My chaotic evil run
Again itās a game with magic and fantasy - focus on having fun with friends playing make believe rather then ācan I make this real world thing?ā. Work with your DM and players at your table to have fun together (and they just might allow you to have a magical chemistry set to play with in game)
i see thank u, and yes thats why i was asking, theres herbalist, alchemist and posioner kit in dnd beyond
The age old āno, [artificer] you cannot build a nuclear warheadā
Yep - check with the folks youāre playing with and some things may be reasonable and possible. But donāt go making assumptions that you can because āD&D is about creativityā (it is but it needs to be fun for everyone, not just you)
maybe if i mix some begginer posoners kit on my rogue
and then make the guy start to craft gas poison and put it on a glass bottle that breaks
obviously depends on DM. but im asking in general dnd rules
You donāt have to ping me when replying - please disable pinging when responding to me. Thanks!
Hellu :>
I just started DND, I have everything, I just never found a DM to work with
Thx
Or if you want an in person game, you can maybe find game stores that allow play in your area
There are options.
How do I request, I just checked it out, and I'm highly confused
Idk man, I joined after I got a game
Iāve never used those
The instructions are in #find-a-game . You type the command in any channel that has a prompt.
Best ways to find a local D&D group??
Sometimes game stores host games
Check Facebook D&D groups and sites like Meetup.
Local libraries (and/or community centers), school clubs, and conventions are other ways to find in-person groups. And like OMYAC said, use digital tools as well.
Trick your friends / family into playing! "It's just one game, I swear!"
The first one is free š
Thank you!! ^w^
MeetUp, Reddit, and other local-focused sites may be of interest, then. I list a bunch of LFG apps/sites in this LFG guide I wrote.
whats the time frame before your able to post in the #looking-for-players?
It should have stated the cooldown time in #find-a-game - but itās 7 days. Once the bot removed the old posts, you can create a new post.
oh, so there isnt a wait time before you can post a application for players?
i thought there was, might just not be understanding how to use the Bot correctly though
You can only post in the LFG channels once every 7 days.
We highly recommend never deleting your post (let the bot do that) and use the attached thread to your post to provide any updates/clarifications.

Should I wait for the 2024 update to come out before I get to familiar with the current rules? I have only been playing for 2 weeks.
The core underlying rules are going to be about 90% the same before and after the update. Iāve been DMing a playtest campaign for several months now, and I can hardly notice the difference, since Iām not a player. The biggest differences that the update is going to introduce will primarily be in the available player opinions.
Thank you
Also, you're under no obligation to adopt the "new" rules.
That'll be up to the DM if they'll use the 2014 or 2024 5E rules.
When creating my character, I see e.g. fighter have two different saving throws on it's profile. What does these mean? Why do I have two?
Each class gets proficiency in two saving throws, meaning you add your proficiency bonus to any rolls for those specific saving throws.
Ok. I dont know why i thought they had anything to do with attack and spellcasting aswell
i need to find a goblin charter sheet for my capain where can i find one
Why do you need a specific sheet for a goblin?
idk why thats what the campain said i should have for it
You don't need a special sheet. You just need to write the info from the goblin race onto a character sheet, which is available here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets

Hey! I would love some tips on how to start a campaign !

Hey correct me if I'm wrong but isn't one of the big parts of d&d being allowed to create your character however you want
My dm/friend has been dogging on me for using base Player's Handbook races for my characters (they fit perfectly fine into our universe that we're using)
There's nothing wrong with using PHB races for your character
Hello
if your dm wants to ban races then that's their right but it's also your right to not want to play a game that restricts your character creation choices
i do think it's weird to ban PHB stuff though. that's like the most basic version of dnd stuff. is it because they think PHB stuff is weak and they want you to use a more """overpowered"""/meta race?
His justification is that he got a whole bunch of books with new races to have a more unique party
I see that, but I made a character that broke the stereotype of orcs, he was a civilized monk
I'll talk to him about it rn
Communication is often the best approach to resolving a problem, however small!
Hello! Iāve been hearing a lot about how fun D&D is and really wanted to try playing it but I donāt have any friends that play it/ they arenāt really into it. Any recommendations for solo playing or is there a way to play online?

The game is designed for a group of players, but folks have made workarounds. This video by Ginny Di goes over solo play and links to one of the major resources for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2nVilB8QeY
You could try searching for a local Adventurers League near you, or check in with local libraries/game stores to see if they have any regular games open to new players
hey so I've really been wanting to DM and my friends and I have really only played 1 or two very short sessions, one of which was not rule based and more of a roleplay thing idk anyways they want me to DM for them and I want to. I think I can but my main issue is I know the general way its played but not all of the specifics and such. All the tutorials I've found go over the rules and how combat works extremely broadly and dont really go into how its played and I don't wanna be unprepared when playing. Do any of yall have a tutorial or something of sorts that goes into the specifics of how certain aspects like rolling and combat and whatnot is played?
Head on over to #dm-discussion and we can give you DMing advice.
Have you read the Basic Rules? That would seem to cover what you're asking about.
A lot of it is centered toward the players perspective from what I've read
Chapters 12 and up cover the DM side of things.
you still need to know all that info on how the game works from a fundamental level
Yep. The mechanics of how the game works don't change if you're the DM; you're just witnessing it from a different perspective (and juggling other plates that players don't have to account for).
alr
If you are able, I'd recommend purchasing the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle hardcover adventure. It's an adventure designed and set out for new DM's, which should be right up your alley
As big of a challenge I realize it probably is, I was actually planning on writing and coming up with my own campaign. I enjoy writing and such already but I've never gotten the chance to combine that with dnd before.
That is definitely ramping up the learning curve. It's doable, but fair warning that you are setting yourself a dramatically tougher taskānot impossible by any means! Just tougher.
Want to be Samurai. How Cy be good Samurai? Katana is cool.
Samurai is a type of fighter in the current edition of D&D. If you want advice for building one, you should head to #character-discussion.
You iz smart 1!

Hey guys. I'm a completely new player. Hoping to learn more about the game and hopefully join a campaign.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
can anyone help me ive really wanted to play dnd for awhile and i really dont know how to
Are you interested in playing online or in-person?
And my follow up question would be if you have played any RPG games and/or games based on the d20 system?
no i havent play any games like that but im more looking for a online game since im sorta young so i can rlly convince my parents to take me to some random strangers house
sorta urban
If you live somewhat urban you can probably find a local hobby shop/game store that runs games
That way you can play in a public, welcoming setting that your parents would probably approve/accept
i kinda want to start off with online games to get a feel for it but ill try and look
Then I would recommend #looking-for-community and see if you can find a server that fits your needs
Some are welcoming and inviting to new players, ready to show the ropes. Some ask for more experience or age restrictions
yea im not rlly sure which i should chose
It is helpful to find a community that is accepting to new players as you are learning. Whether you plan to play online or in-person, it is advisable to begin learning the rules. You can purchase a ruleset book at the hobby store, check out online applications and there are definitely many free-to-access resources for accessing basic rules
It may take time. I personally had to keep an eye on the ads for LFG's for a bit and try some out before I found one that works for me
Feel free to start with this quick Beginners Guide by One Shot Questers: https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU
It's a great overview. Afterwards I recommend checking out the resources in the bot post above or check out #learn-to-play .
Be patient and ask questions, key to playing D&D well
For parent approved places, I recommend checking out:
- Your local library
- Your local tabletop store
- Your local school
- Your local youth D&D programs.
alright ill take a look
i found a community it said to contact staff if your a minor so now i play the waiting game
@pale depot I agree. If you are not in the middle of no-where rural area, you probably have regular Table-Top gaming and/or D&D happening in local shops/venues. Google D&D by me and keep checking this channel
alright
You can also find out about in person dnd events on the WOTC website here: https://locator.wizards.com/
I hope you have excellent luck finding your own way to enjoying D&D! Don't forget this server is a great resource for asking questions and getting helpful answers
none near my house š¦ closest one is a five hr drive basically 3 states over
The WotC locator isn't 100% up to date ime. So there may actually be closer stores
Yep.
I host in person Adventure League games at my local game shop and it didn't pop up.
I think stores have to actively get themselves added
That is only one source, I would ask your parents to find you a hobby store nearby. Once you get there, ask about D&D and if they host games or know about local games
I'm new to dnd and don't know how to find a group
Depends on what you are looking for in a group, personally it took me a little trial and error
You are new to Discord and D&D?
@dapper fossil Feel free to DM me questions as well, I know it can be overwhelming to ask in open servers
Hey im kinda new to dnd i have played once but like 4 sessions, where do i go to like join someones game
In person or online?
i played in person, but im looking for online ig
Or #looking-for-players if you want to browse games
hello, I am semi new, I only been in a 1 shot campaign but i am looking for a long term campaign. I donāt know how to make a character, was given a premade.
Well, I assume you understand how character sheets work?
kinda
Check the links in this channelās pins, they contain a link to the free basic rules that deal with character creation
Which, in turn, will also help you understand the sheet. The pins also link to Critical Roleās Handbooker Helper series which is a nice visual-auditory supplement

And as for knowing what type of character to make, you'd speak to the DM and ask questions
I see thank you
Which is good advice for most other questions you might have tbh
is it recommended to play the class you have chosen?
It's recommended to choose a class you want to play...
i have seen my friends play classes they didnāt wanna play
that seems like an error on their part
You work with your DM to pick something that you want to play, if a DM is forcing you to play a certain class thatās not the right table for you
I assume theyāve selected pre-mades like you mentioned youāve done before, in which case yeah I can see them not being able to play a class they wanted to
But yeah most campaigns players get free choice of what they want to play
sounds like they more or so just picked classes to make a good team fight combo and not so fun to play
but talk with the dm so you guys can make the class you wanna play be able to work
okay
normally a lot of dnd groups have like certain roles aka tank support range etc but i am gonna be honest its just hilarious and a lot of fun if that isnt the case. Just imagine 4 wizards bombarding the enemies or an entiere party of rogues just dissappear. If you know how to everything can work together
āRolesā in dnd are much less defined than in something like an MMO, and you donāt really have to focus on filling roles
Hey I'm new to Dnding and looking if anyone would like to have me for a game and teach me the ropes? I know some stuff about Dnd but would like to know more and how to accurately play the game
Same here
@wintry spoke we twinsies?
Yurrr
My friends aren't really interested
I aint got friends kinda, I have home schooling and my neighbor friend isnt interested
So yeah, Im tryna look for a campaign online
Indeed go/jo
Anyway, I did olay supplements like jjk but never really got to normal dnd
Nor can i find a campaign for normal dnd or a supplement
I'm looking for a campaign because I like roleplaying and wanna get more into dnd
Plus I kinda need more friends
Discord aint the place for friends
Why do you say that
Cause discords got wild.people
Yeah
wild people can be friends though
not all wild is bad, but the bad wild is very bad
Agreed
some people are the good kinda weird, but the bad weird gets amplified by the anonymity discord provides
basically
there are though
Can I ask questions about being a new dm
hi hi
Sure but you may want to ask in #dm-discussion where you can chat shop with other DMs
Hi I'm new to dnd and is searching for people to play does anyone have one I can join?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Hi Iām new to dnd.Iām currently looking for a DM/group to play with and already summited a form for that.In the meantime I figured I should try to build up my knowledge of the game while I wait,so is there anything specific that you think new players should know before starting a game?
not really a game rule, but remember to talk with your dm about what is and isn't allowed. some Dms are a lot more strict with rulings and such, so If you wanna do something but aren't 100% sure it's allowed, better be safe and ask about it
also try and get in character. newer players sometimes are scared of taking roleplay seriously (I was too, once) but it's like- 90% of the fun.
it's better to be cringe and free than to not be free at all
Thanks for the advice,Iāll be sure to keep it in mind.
always happy to help š
Have you read any of the Basic Rules yet? That would be a good step to learn the game.
Yeah I started reading some of the basic rules as well as common terms and stuff like that.thank you for the advice Iāll look more into the basic rules.
Thoe rules aside, I think itās worth keeping in mind a few things regarding the social nature of the game:
- No one is the main character, so try to cooperate with your fellow players. Similarly, the DM is not your enemy. Try to respect and lean into everyoneās fun rather than privileging your own.
- When thereās a problem, in game or out of it, communicate to solve it.
- Be mindful of othersā boundaries and your own. Itās a more active, intimate form of entertainment, so be respectful when people say what they donāt want to deal with.
My list of general player tips is here: #dnd-newcomers message
Everyone is the mc*
Same difference, personally! No one person is.
About hogging the spotlight, some people just make a busted ahh build while 2 people in the party cant do nun
So it does kinda suck
Which goes to my point about not privileging your own fun above everyone elseās. If folks are okay with a character being more powerful, go for it, but if not, compromise.
Yeah, some people just dont care and are arrogant
Which sometimes makes me leave campaigns
Its just no fun like that.
Thanks so much for the tips,Iāll definitely be sure to keep them in mind while playing.
hi
Hi
Also I have a few more questions,I keep seeing the terms adventures league and homebrew. I was just wandering what these terms mean.

⢠#al-dungeoncraft ā [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Thank you.
Btw whats the character creation rolls in vanilla dnd
4d6 drop the lowest, assuming the DM allows rolling.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you donāt have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Not all DMs allow certain stat generation methods. I only use point-buy, for example.
Btw what is point buy exactly?
You can click the link to find out
Aigh ima check it rq
I see
So its like guaranteeing you have good stats for your build but the others might be worse
It ensures you can't have all good stats or all bad ones; it ends up being a good balance, I find.

If you're looking for a game, check out the post above! While not every game that's advertised will specifically say that it's newbie friendly, plenty of DMs are happy to have new players. Reach out to games you're interested in, and be honest about the fact that you're new, and you'll have a much better chance finding the right game for you! And don't forget, the more familiar you are with the basic rules, the better chance you have finding a game!
okay, thanks š
i forgot if the PB was according to the global level or to the class level
What's the maximum height you can make your character?
The short answer is it depends on your race
The long answer is that there isn't one officially, but you need to be reasonable
Would depend on character race and other modifiers like spells or items that would increase size
Playable races are either Small or Medium-sized. There's no hard set numbers for the height of either Small or Medium-sized creatures.
What would you allow?
That's a question for your DM, not us
But if you want a guideline, don't make anything outside the range of existing species options
Just wondering
Ya more a question for the DM but I'd say 7ft is the upper limit for a "medium" creature
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#HeightandWeight
The basic rules includes a table that shows average height and weight values for each of the default races. It includes some modifiers for the upper and lower limits, but again these are only the average values. If you were to go by this chart, the tallest a human could be is 6'2"
So you can go above or below this if you want. But you do have to keep it within reason, since you are still playing either a small or medium creature.
This discord, Roll20 or your local game store would be good spots to start.

Yeah you'll have to check those resources. I would suggest looking for a game here in the https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 channel or going to Roll 20. This link will take you to the LFG form and you can tick the find games that welcome new players box https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search/
Also, hi I'm new here but I've been playing D&D since about 2017 and last year began running Curse of Strahd for my playgroup to give our Homebrew DM a bit of a break lol
Thanks
Should I use the DND beyond app to create a character?
Or is there a better way?
hi chat
Id suggest sheets
if a dm has one
you can just join a party and then make a character
in that sheet
Oh ok
Depends on what platform you will be using.
If you are on Roll20 they have a character creator that uses the materials your DM has access to. If your DM is using D&D beyond then use that.
Other than that you can use sheets.
Thanks
I dont recommend roll20 characters
its easier when the dm has the sheets at the palm of his hands so he doesnt have to double check everything
If it's the platform his DM will be using though that's what he'll need to do.
Need or want?
my dm didnt use the roll20 character creation and only the character itself
we used sheets as the method
Sure but this is semantics at this point. It depends on what the DM wants, full stop.
Yeah, that's fair
Sheets can be a bit overwhelming for a new player imo. So if you do go that route and need help ask if your DM will sit down with you and help or chime in here for some advice.
For a new player, yes
That's the thing, you don't. Just look for a free one
That's not much of help. That's an opinion
Ya you don't have to pay for one, but you might consider it if that DM offers something in particular that interests you. Often times paid games have access to more materials. I would say don't bother paying for a game until you get a bit more experience.
Ight
Paid games means folks are less likely to flake. There's also an expectation that the DM will add some bells and whistles, whether that's content access, custom art/maps/minis, or other immersive elements. If folks can't find a game but really want to play, they may shell out the money to make it happen.
It's not a necessity to pay for a game. Those are just reasons why someone might.
Ok that's fair
How long does it usually take to start the game? Like characters and preparation
That can vary a ton.
Do you mean from when you find a group until when your first session starts? There's no concrete answer to that, really. It could take a few days to a few weeks, depending on what kind of set up the DM requires.
Oh that's some time
Ya it depends on the prep work and scheduling of players. Sometimes it can be hard to find a day that works.
Ye and timezones too
Often times you can find games that line up with your time zone or close to it.
My buddy is two time zones over from me right now so we have been having difficulty scheduling recently.
You should go through the character creation process to understand how it works. You may not be able to use your character as is depending on what restrictions your DM has in place.
Ok
Ya but other than that. Your only limit is your imagination! I like to start with a framework and then build off that. I'd suggest reading the Players Handbook.
Does it cost?
And by framework I mean, do I want to be a magic user? Or swing a big weapon?
The Player's Handbook does cost money, but you can read the free Basic Rules, which includes most of the PHB's content: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
What's phb?
Player's Handbook.
Players Handbook
Ohhh
Resource books in D&D often get abbreviated.
IM GMT
oops caps.
anyway I only found like one session that suits me today
everything before that is like 9 hours ahead
It can be a tough road, but the only way to find a game is to preserve! Just like dating, finding the right game for you can take some time.
