yea basically one is like 4-8 people and community is whole discord servers
im not sure, i kinda wanna be info gathering, i like perception considering thiefs cant and criminal contacts. I wanna be like info gathering.
and as secondary, thief, pickpocketing, and bowman/dagger
since it's my first character that's something i wanna try
info is important
Info is important!
Rogues can cast with Int if they go arcane trickster and Int has investigation
Perception can be really useful, but investigation is usually for the deeper searching
ooh i might reconsider. as a raw character creation. I dont mind either intelligence or wisdom
imma change a little, thank u
No prob! All stats have their upsides though lol
i added a profile pic to my character. Also i found the proficient edit you commented a few times. ty
Feel free to put points wherever you want
No prob! Happy to help ya out
I got 2 expertise and 4 proficiencies. I can choose the same thing in both.
Yep! Expertise can only apply to things you have proficiency in
"At 1st level, choose two of your skill proficiencies, or one of your skill proficiencies and your proficiency with thieves’ tools. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of the chosen proficiencies."
Oh okay!! thank u camjam
dnd is so detail oriented i love it. Thank u
Lol no problem! I like helping out new people here
Lol that's not so crazy, rogue's expertise is a huge part of them
Plus investigation can be underutilized by DM's so every now and then it may be worth it to ask "hey could I use investigation here?" but of course for appropriate things
omg, as a side thing, i added medicine and small alchemist kit. Now that i got int. Can i learn super basic healing spells?
wait how do u even learn spells in dnd
You gotta have spellcasting, rogues can become Arcane Tricksters. Check out that subclass's spell list
I can have 2 classes??? is that allowed?
i can be clerick or wizard. imma go wizard.. can i even do that??
Multiclassing is an optional rule, so you’ll have to check to see if your DM allows it, but yes it’s pretty common
A subclass is something unlocked at lvl 3 in a class. You're thinking of Multiclassing which is a commonly allowed thing too
You can’t multiclass at level 1 though
Wixard does intelligence and wisdom. its too perfect
Hold on, you're kinda misunderstanding this
That’s not what “meta gaming” means btw
yeah
Thief is the only rogue subclass that is available for free as part of the Basic Rules. Each class only has 1 free subclass
damn so i cant be a rogue mage
how to arcane trickster
im really into that plss
It's in a book I believe, maybe a DM would be able to give you access (I don't remember if they can do that though)
Arcane Trickster is part of the Player’s Handbook. To make an arcane trickster character on D&D Beyond you’ll need to either purchase the book, purchase the subclass individually, participate in a campaign that has content sharing, or add it yourself via the D&D Beyond Homebrew Tools
aaw okay, imma be thief for now, i guess i just gotta find a game
if i like it, imma be a underground intel gathering, thief magic using healer
so cool
hi there

hi im new is there anyway for me to find a campaign for new players and/or get some help understanding how the source books work
#find-a-game can help ya out there, but read it carefully
In the meantime of finding a game, you should watch a few videos on the subject cause that can help
i think i understand
i did the the demo so
that should work
so you roll a dice and it decided how well you do something
Yep, the d20 is often used for skill checks and that can decide the outcome!
for me i did a dexterity check on the demo thing on the link and got an 18
thats a good start
also got a 2 on another roll
so think i get how it works completely
Yep it's all about the story we tell with help from the dice
so now i find a game
Sessions?
THAS WHAT IM SAYIN!!!
It doesn’t work for me
Ok so I'll hop into this channel since the others are so busy. I've been in a campaign for about a year. All my other experience have been online and the people don't know how I am in real life. Well my problem with this campaign is everyone is expecting me to play my character similar to my irl morals. Honestly... I want to be out of pocket but seems like everyone fights me on my decisions. Is that normal or how do you go about telling your team to not try to play for you.
If they don't align with you they maybe it's just a matter of clarifying "hey guys these aren't my irl morals", or did I misread that?
No you're right with that but I kinda have already said that. Maybe I just have to voice it more? I just never had that issue with people I didn't know.
I'd make it clearer, BUT if it's making people uncomfortable over and over then maybe consider changing how the character acts (sometimes we ourselves can be the "problem" and not like to see it/admit it)
Not saying that's what's going on, but it may just be a moment of "hey we wanna play as heroes man, sorry"
Hi ! I have no idea whats happening but hello ^_^

No prob!
Hmm maybe haha we have a barbarian who does everything to spite me but it's not morally ok if I spite him too 😅 but thank you for the perspective. I think some of it aligns with that too and we just don't know how to play with eachother yet.
Hey it'll get there, just communicate. Communication is a cornerstone of dnd that doesn't get the credit it deserves
Hello! I'm quite new to dnd and this is my first dnd discord server. I hope all or some of you teach me on how to properly play, since I've only been learning from YouTube videos till now.

Heyyy guys! As you may have already guessed, I am a pure beginner to DnD. I've only ever watched a few popular campaigns on youtube here and there and it always felt like a fun experience. This is my first DnD discord server and I am here to learn all the things I need to and go on some awesome adventures with some awesome people! Thanks for having me :)
you should play paladin with a big hammer and be based

ANyone knows of a good tool to help quickly look up monsters/enemies stat blocks online? Or is using the monster manual the best way?
DnDBeyond and Avrae (discord bot) are a great combo
Avrae?
See #ddb-avrae-help for more info
Thanks
Hii
I have never played dnd before and I dont really now that much about the rules or anything. I want to get into it but everything seems so overwhelming. Does anyone have any advice to help me?
Knowing the rules can be helpful, but don't feel like you have to memorize everything before you start playing. There will be 4-5 other people at the table with you to help you remember things, and you can always use the rule books as references while playing, if you want to
The most important aspect to getting started is understanding your character, and some of the basics of combat.
How are we playing ? Like do we have sessions or is someone just saying like " Hey someone wanna play ? "
I hope you know how I mean it :' )
You play D&D by finding a group of people, scheduling a time to do it, and then just talking and rolling dice. Anything beyond that is up to the individual group that your playing with. Some people like to do weekly campaigns with a long runnng story, whereas other people like to do 1-and-done sessions called "one shots." Its just about finding a group of people that all want to play the game the same way you do, and can schedule a time to play when you are available
Ah okay thanks =}
Hello! I’m new! I’m not new to the concept of dnd but I’ve never played in a campaign and know so little about the basics! I truly want to learn because someday I do wanna join a party and have some fun!

Welcome! This bot post above has lots of helpful resources for getting started, and our #learn-to-play channel has even more detailed guides. If you have any specific questions, please let us know and we'd be more than happy to help
If you'd like to get a game together, read through the instructions in #find-a-game to see how to make a post in the #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players channels. This is not the propper channel for scheduling and coordinating a game

Hi everyone. I'm 100% new to all of this. I've been reading about how to play and have the handbook and other resources I've been looking into. But I have a quick question with regards to creating your character. Do the players need to work with the DM to create the back story of a character?
There's no definitive answer, but for a social game, a lot of us will say that collaborating with the DM (and fellow players) is a good thing.
DM is the one who decides the setting so players may want to work with the DM so the characters fits with the setting. If the DM's world has no elves but the player wants to play an elf then there's an issue.
Gotcha. Ok, that makes sense. I figured but wasn't sure. So you really don't need to create a character all by yourself, right? You can just all sit together and talk about back stories, the world building, etc.
I appreciate you guys responding so quickly. Thank you 😊
You should know how to create a character, but creating a character in isolation may mean you don't get to play them as you envisioned because of a clash with the lore, setting, vibe, etc.
Gotcha. Thank you! 😊
So go through the process, sure, but also have multiple character ideas and be willing to flex on some of the details.
As a complete newbie, do you recommend I read more on the rules, gameplay, etc., first? Or would it be more helpful to kind of jump into a quick 1-time adventure to see how it works and learn as I play?
Know your character's class features and spells and how ability skills and combat works (Chapters 1-4, 7, and 9). The less the DM needs to pause the game to explain the rules to you then the more helpful you are to them.
It depends on the circumstances. If you're trying to play with strangers, I suggest knowing the rules, as that increases your chances of being invited. If you're playing with friends, you can all learn as you go.
Ok cool. Both good advice. Thank you both!
Happy adventuring!
Thank you!
Would either of you be willing to dm anytime if I have questions? I feel like it's a lot and just reading wouldn't be enough lol. But I also understand there's a lot out there so if you don't feel comfy with it, it's totally understandable 🙂
I prefer to answer questions on the server, so multiple people can see the discussion and benefit from it.
Ok, cool. I'll be sure to post any questions on here. Thank you!
watching so many dark fantasy tiktok videos makes me wanna try dnd

Yes
I think joining new DM games its the most comfortable for me as new player. We both get to have fun and we both learn
Cool, thank you!
Stop trying to organize games here in the discussion channels - it is off-topic
Read #find-a-game
It is showing that I don't have permission
Hello! I'm new to DnD and struggling to understand Armor Class - everything I see online only seems to explain how to calculate your AC but no what it does. Does it reduce damage, or completely nullify attacks as long as they're weak enough?
Did you read the messages in that channel carefully?
Read the information in that channel carefully
the #find-a-game channel is a list of instructions. Read through it to see how to organize a game
I don't know if my question is best but here or in #dnd-rules - it's probably a very simple one haha
AC is what anything making an attack against you has to roll or higher in order to hit you
I see
So if AC is 12, and an attack rolls 8 without additional damage modifiers, it deals no damage?
When you make an attack, your attack roll determines whether the attack hits or misses. To make an attack roll, roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifiers. If the total of the roll plus modifiers equals or exceeds the target's Armor Class (AC), the attack hits. The AC of a character is determined at character creation, whereas the AC of a monster is in its stat block.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
I see, thanks! ❤️
When you make an attack you do 2 different types of dice rolls. An "attack roll" and a "damage roll." The "Attack roll" is what you compare against the opponent's AC to see if it hit. If it does hit, then the "damage roll" is how much damage you do
Right. An attack roll is either a hit or a miss (or a crit hit). In that case, it would be a miss.
They were using DM to mean "Direct Message," not "Dungeon Master."
They were not trying to organize a game.
I apologize for any confusion. Thank you @austere crystal. Yes, I did mean direct message. Clearly new here and didn't realize DM is obviously used for dungeon master too. Sorry about that
NP. Also I can answer questions here or in DMs whichever is preferred by you.
can u date and marry npcs?
I would also be more than willing to answer any inquires you may have within.
That really depends on if your DM is open to that at their table
This is a roleplaying game. You can talk to your Dungeon Master about how they run the campaign. If they are uncomfortable with romance or if they don't like the idea of romantic roleplay as a focus, then no. Ultimately you just have to talk to your DM about it.
i see, well if I can't marry i can always rob her instead
rogue activities
Please remember that D&D is not a video game. You are playing a character as if they were a real person in a real world. The NPCs are not there just for you to exploit or use
I appreciate that. Thank you 😊
jokes on u, im chaotic neutral irl
We have repurcussions in DND for a reason lol. Thievery is easily noticed, and spells are great for detectives
If you want your character to be a thief that steals from people, you'll
A) need to make sure everyone at your table is ok with that. Some people want to play in a game where everyone is a hero
B) understand that there can be real concequences for breaking the law in game
so what u are saying, i cant take the parties gold and gamble it all on red. And keep the profits for myself?
Stealing from the party is a HUGE no-no
You can, what the rest of the party do to you as a response is up to them. I'd probably kick at that point as it's a pretty hostile action
That can get you kicked out of a game, if people are not ok with it
One of my first campaigns, the party, bar one player, colluded to have that player's character die as soon as possible, because they were refusing to be a team player
We were unsuccessful;, and the campaign fell apart quickly afterwards as no one wanted to deal with that guy
This requires talking to the actual players and DM beforehand. Stealing from players and pvp are generally huge things to avoid
When someone is not being a team player, or are taking hostile actions against other party members, that is an out of game issue. Trying to handle that by punishing them in game will never go well
There is a reason for the term "chaotic stupid." It sounds like it's being exemplified here.
I know that now, but I was young and inexperienced at this point
D&D is a group collaborative game. When a player decides not to collaborate with the group then they shouldn't be surprised if they're kick out of the table for being disruptive.
literally 1984, jokes aside u just steal from the government, ingame
I suppose badcat is trying to cheeky on purpose, but yeah, dnd is about community, working as a team and having fun together. I suppose being an arse in game could work if it's part of your character and you're playing an antagonist, but I don't really see it going over well lol
on my first game i wanna be rogue for info collecting and being rogue as secondary
i am gonna gamble my own money tho
So you're looking at either an Inquisitive or a Mastermind.
You shouldn’t have a player that is playing as an antagonist. That’s what causes a lot of these issues
Oh yeah, I know, I was just saying that theoretically in some way it could maybe work, depending on your group dynamic, but it very probably won't
dunno what that is but sounds interesting
camjam told me about arcane trickster
im so hyped about that, imma buy it and play it next game
Inquisitive and Mastermind are just different rogue subclasses.
Buy it? Is Arcane Trickster not free with the Basic Rules on D&D Beyond?
For some reason I thought that all the PHB subclasses were free.
You can make any rogue subclass fun, but arcane trickster is the casting one (which is why I mentioned it, because your rogue has a high int stat)
Sadly only thief is free I believe lol
Aw, that's so sad.
Just one subclass for each class. Rogue's subclass is Thief in the Basic Rules like CamJam says
Thief! The beeeest one
i only get thief only
What are some other good places to try and find a campaign to join online? I've been looking for one here for a while now but haven't had much luck due to a variety of reasons, thinking about trying to search for a campaign elsewhere to sort of.. increase my chances, I suppose
Oooh, thank you very much
Good luck. Hope you find something!
thanks
That's a really cool guide. Thanks for sharing!
If you search for "D&D duet", you can find a bunch of 1-on-1 options.
Are character sheets supposed to be rewritten on for each new thing you pick up or have
Or do you need a second sheet for your current remaining hit points and new items in inventory
You update it when you add/remove items or your hp changes. Use a pencil if you have a paper character sheet.
Nothing on your character sheet is permanent.
Ye I was asking cause I found this app you can use to change can I dont like wasting physical material
(no need to waste all that paper) lol
Just print out the character sheet and fill it in with a pencil and erase when you need to.
I'm still in school for the next 4 years I'm gonna need that lead
I like using mechanical but it makes for more lead usage I find
And when I erase things it looks messy. I'm somehow bad at using an eraser.
The app I found also have a multi class feature so it should be fine
It's a bit glitchy sometimes tho. It has a dice roller but sometimes the dice doesn't appear when I press roll.
My dm got us all our own dice anyway and I got ducks inside mine
So I'm ok with physical dice
Also what does short rest regen. I know long rest regenerates everything but what does short rest regen?
I'm sorry to fill up the chat with my questions btw
Our dm is too busy to answer them rn
A short rest lets you get back some HP and abilities. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#ShortRest
Thx for the link. Does the site on here mention what hit die is used for as well?
In bg3 which is basically 4e as far as I know, the 1d4 or 1d8 gets used for whatever situations they are used for, but in 5e it seems like you can't use it all the time
Each class has a specific hit die. It determines how much HP a character gains on level up, and they can be expended during a short rest to regain HP.
Ohhhhh
Like wizard has less HP then the fighter type thing
I think thats true i was just told wizards have lowest hp
(it is true 99% of the time yes)
Con modifier can be a deciding factor, but mostly yes Wizard has the lowest Hp
But yee if they all have the same con, wizards and sorcerers have the lowest, then all spellcasters plus monk except for paladins and rangers, then paladins, rangers and fighters, then barbarian is with the biggest hit dice of a d12
Hi all, I'm new to DND and my friend group asked if I can be the DM. We bought the starter set Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Any advice for someone completely new to DND? my friends are new to it as well and I want to make it fun for them.
Has anyone played this campaign?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The two bot posts above have some great tips for starting out as a DM
We have a thread for that adventure over in #1029833015423143957, and you can get specific DM advice in #dm-discussion. My biggest suggestion is to talk to your players about how you like to play, what you want out of the game, how to compromise when there's a problem. To me, that's even more important than knowing the rules.
Also, remember it's a game, so if it's not fun, work together to make it fun. It's not just the DM's responsibility to make it fun.
Also, while there can be a lot to read, don't let that stop you from diving in and actually playing!
Thanks @fallen surge and @harsh fjord I will check out the server and gather some info
Virtual Tabletop
i just google around and thatd cool
i thought it was all on discord voicecall and thats it
Virtual tabletop apps are primarily for playing online to dispaly battlemaps. There are simple VTTs, like owlbear.rodeo and D&D Beyond's Maps, with bare bones features. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum there are VTTs like Foundry and Talespire that have many features out of the box (Talespire being a 3D VTT with 3D tiles).
I'm interested in getting started, but what sort of time commitment do I need? Can I do a quest casually, looking at my character every once in a while, or do I need to be concentrating for long periods of time?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Well, fine. I'm already researching those resources. But I asked a straightforward question which should only require a short answer. Why am I being told to go do tons of homework?
Can you define what you mean by "long periods of time"? Just so I can properly answer your question 🙂
Because D&D is a game of rules. You need to know how to create your own character. Noone else is going to do it for you.
That's not in dispute. I need a simple answer to one simple question. If you don't know, fine. I can ask somebody else.
There's no simple answer because each table is different.
Some people play once a week for three hours while others play several times a week or just once a month for 12 hours straight.
If you just want to play casually then your best bet is do one-shots or Adventurer's League games.
You might play your character in a one-shot for a few hours once and then never again
I'm wondering if I need to block a few hours, is what I mean.
Is there anything better than roll20?
Scheduling a big issue. You need to work that out with your DM and the other players when's the best time that works for everyone.
Yeah, a typical session would be a few hours long. An alternative is a Play-By-Post game, which is text based and so takes longer in time elapsed, but you can check in briefly for a few minutes every couple of hours/days depending on the rate of play
Foundry IMO.
You can add tracks (but this is more for #third-party )
Or the Foundry discord which I have heard is friendly
Does anybody want to play with me? Or know someone who needs a player?
This article gives a good overview of play-by-post as Lionn mentioned: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp

hey guys and @zinc ore is it possible i can be DM and make a game in3 months
i convinced my friends to play lol
You don't need to have perfect mastery of the game to run it.
For sure! Watch some videos on youtube and learn some basic stuff
#dm-discussion is the place to more in-depth conversation, but for starters I'd recommend reading the Quickstart Guide to Game Mastering (https://howtogm.guide/) and watching the first handful of videos from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series on YouTube.
If the players are down to play with a new DM then yeah there's nothing wrong lol. Plus every DM makes mistakes, so don't feel bad about messing up (especially in the beginning)
Experienced DMs were once newbies themselves. Don't worry about your lack of experience -- the only way to get better is through experience and learning from your mistakes.
And you'll still make mistakes. Just hopefully new ones and less frequent ones.
thank u !!
day one - imma make my rogue be a info collector of the world
day two - i am the world
You can also consider running a module if you're uncertain about homebrew
thats great too omg

thabk u !!
hi! Just wanted to know if there was a DM around who would want to help my friends and I learn to play? A couple of us are experienced, a couple are completely new to D&D, and absolutely none of us know enough/have enough time to actually DM. if anyone is interested or had any ideas/helpful info, please please let me know!! (we are very desperate and have spent too many hours creating characters)
Sure.
awesome, thank you!! I'll send you a link to the server if that's okay??

Yeah that's fine.
I’m so anxious about tomorrow..first time playing and dm’ing..I hope I do it right! Does anyone have tips for keeping the game running (just in general-)
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Hey guys! I'm new to DND, never played a game, but im working extensively to create a character that is suitable for a first playthrough. Would a person being sent back in time to the moment of the session be a fun idea? I mean, would most DM's allow it?
Why would your PC be sent back in time?
As a new player you're probably going to start at level 1 and level 1 PCs are not powerful and are literally nobodies. Why would your PC be important enough to be sent back in time?
Your DM may not allow time travel so consult with the DM.
Well, I was looking through my character designs that I had comissioned a while ago and realized I had nothing done for my DND characters. So I saw those designs that are moden and thought of it to be a fun idea
Ah I see
Remember, you're not the Main Character but one of many in the group.
Yes, I am well aware of that.
If you want to discuss ideas about your characters then head on over to #character-discussion
Alright, thanks
Hi everyone! Well I'm completely new to DnD, I've seen some campaigns online and I kinda get how the game works but I have never played myself, only thing I know is that one of the first things to do is create a character?

it is linked in the bot post above
Yeah thank you, I'm reading it right now that's why I didn't responded
This is the brief version: #dm-discussion message
does any one have advice about useful websites like DND Beyond
Useful in what ways?
D&D Beyond is for character sheets and digital books (plus a simple VTT if you have the Master Tier subscription).
Roll20 is another good VTT and Inkarnate is a good map service
You need to be more specific in what you're looking for in a D&D-related site/app.
I am realising the severity of my actions lmfao. I joined a DND campaign that takes place on wednesday at midnight for me, until 4AM.
Y'all think I should talk to my DM about it and cancel it? I can join for the first 3-4 times, but after that I don't know if i am able to
Tell them what you wrote here and see how they react.
Ok
Hey everyone. I'm reading the player handbook and currently learning about abilities. But I'm not sure about something. How do you calculate your hit points? The book mentions the calculation but not why a certain ability was picked over others for it.
Do you get to choose which ability to use for that?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.

Hit Points and Hit Dice
Whenever a creature takes damage, that damage is subtracted from its hit points. Creatures with more hit points are more difficult to kill.
Your hit point maximum is determined by your hit dice, both at 1st level and when you gain a level. Your class and level determine your available hit dice. You can also spend hit dice to recover hit points during a short rest, and recover spent hit dice during a long rest.
When you drop to 0 hit points, you either die outright or fall unconscious. Temporary hit points can provide a buffer against damage to protect your actual hit points.
Hit points are determined by your class.
You have hit dice equal to your class level.
Every time you level up you can take the average or roll a hit dice to determine what to add to your total hit dice.
On a short rest you can expend hit dice to recover hit points
You recover half of your expended hit dice on a long rest.
Got it. Thank you!
What do you need help with?
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Click on the links above.
Quick question I’m watching a dnd campaign and they keep rolling for layer/lair actions where highest is best and one person rolls for the whole table, what do they mean?
Lair actions usually happen at an initiative count of 20. It doesn’t typically involve a roll.
Many Lairs have multiple lair actions, they could be rolling to randomly determine which Lair effect activates this round, perhaps
whats homebrew again? sounds important i see it everywhere
Anything that's not officially published by WotC
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
got it thank u
Hello! I am new here can I get either players or a DM for my game, I know this is not the correct place to ask but on the other place only 1 guy is typing everything and I don't have permission to type

How do I join a campaign
Check the bot post above.
Ok
Hey ive never played dnd before and im wondering where i can start? And how to find a campaign to learn
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

We also have #learn-to-play but above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
For character sheets you can use the printable/ editable character sheets from WotC such as this fillable form version or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Note that on dndbeyond your access to options will be limited to the free access races and creatures unless you purchase more, or homebrew. Feel free to ask here if confused by anything.
Then it's finding a game. You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to post if the LFG channels here but there are also other places to look into, including Adventure League (official organised play) other platform's LFG (Like roll20, r/lfg on reddit) so on. Or find an in person game by kidnapping getting together some friends or looking into local game shops.
what is the current year for 5e, and where can i read up on the important happenings and basic things as ruling parties etc?
What setting are you interested in?
Because each setting's wiki is probably a good starting point
we'll be playing DoIP
Dragon of Icespire Peak is usually set in Forgotten Realms, and some DMs have it take place around 1492 DR. However you probably will need to check with your DM as they might have it take place in any other setting, including their own, and at any time.
#dnd-lore can help answer more questions on FR lore, but chatting with your DM might be more useful as that will help avoid spoilers and also make sure you know what lore is relevant to your own game.
thanks, will do. We haven't even ran our session 0 yet, but i do have the utmost respect for our DM (and any other for that matter). The sheer volume of questions and content that runs through them is staggering
What's the usual way people make their character's "image"? Like, do they draw it themselves, use an AI, or have a reference character..?
@hollow jungle open dnd beyond
They have both pre loaded characters and you can make custom characters
Oh yeah, that's done already. Meant as in the portrait
Let's stay on topic please
This channel is for helping newcomers and beginners with the basics of playing D&D, not how to make character art
@crude musk OK.
@hollow jungle can you help, I want to know how long does it take for newbie to find a game session .
It can take days, weeks, or even months
It depends entirely on what you're looking for
Ah, sorry. I was wondering how experienced players have managed to get over the portrait hurdle. xd
@crude musk is there a better way to find any dnd session then @south ridgekingforplayers
We can recommend trying other online locations or maybe a game store. If you have a budget available it's easier to find a paid DM.
People get paid to DM?
Yep. It's a lot of work.
Hours of prep work each week, plus running it. There are also many many more players than available DMs. Those that create or purchase maps and such spend even more.
Whoa, that's cool.
Channels are linked to by the "#" using "@" pings a user.
#looking-for-players and the other looking-for channels here are the ways the server helps people find games. But there are forums in roll20, reddit threads and other places that host their own version of LFG
A lot of folks also forget about other D&D servers that may offer a variety of different styles of D&D games that post in #looking-for-community
So I finished the backstory for character actually kind of a while ago but I’m not really sure if it’s “good” or not like what makes a good backstory and how do you know?
I don't think there is a perfect formula for it. As a backstory that is a paragraph long but written well could be better than one several pages long but written poorly.
For me it's some od these questions:
- does it make sense grammatically?
- does it make sense in the scope of the game?
- does it at least touch on the basics of where I am from, how I got started as a (class name) and what inspired setting off on adventure?
-do I feel connected to this story? - have I built a character in the world or am I trying to make my character the main character of a game (the latter I think is usually a bad thing as d&d is a group game)
You could also ask folks in #character-discussion to look it over (if it's not too long)
OK, I think I’ll try that, but how long is like too long like how long should it take someone to read?
As a DM I prefer a short bullet list that help explains where you character comes from (background) and why they started adventuring and potential connections to powers/factions in the setting my game is based in
I see. Definitely makes it easier I presume
I mean feel free to write up a novel for your characters backstory if you find that enjoyable but for the game, most DMs just need the tl;dr; short paragraph or bulleted list version
Not sure if it's homebrew but my DM was talking about determined death? Anything I should know?
Probably shouldn’t listen to anything I say but to me it sounds like no resurrecting your character
He said something about a seed in my characters chest?
We have a (in game) year to fix it
Oh, I see so if you don’t fix it within that year, your character will die and will stay dead no coming back
I kinda like that idea that sounds awesome. Always love games that have in game timers.
It certainly does add for interesting plot
There is not anything like that in the official game rules so most likely homebrew.
Sounds very Elden Ring i love that tbh-
Fr. I would love to play a game that has some sort of corruption taking over the world slowly and we had to do something to stop it.
Let’s keep this channel open for new to D&D folks to ask questions about core game rules and mechanics.
We have #homebrew to discuss homebrew mechanics
My apologies
No worries!
👍
I got a question for the DMs for a second do you come up with everything like at the start or do you just build the world along the way?
A mix of both on my part
For time reasons I use premade adventures and tweak to suit
i plan arcs out like an anime or tv series (seasons) essentially
I see. I want to try DMing my own game since I really love storytelling and such but due to the fact, I’ve never actually played. It’s better. I start off as a player.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
I know I can, but I think it’s best to get experience with the game from the perspective of a player and see how experienced DMs interacts with his players that way, I have understanding and have an idea of what to do when I start
don't really know what to say other than I'm new to DnD. Don't know what questions to ask tbh.
But hello, I hope ya'll are having a good day

Welcome!
Welcome!
Howdy!
Just two messages above you, DOSH wrote a nice welcome message to another new player. Reading through that can help you get started
Yo, yo!
Real
welcome, fellow newbie
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/123672538 , am a newcomer and I really need feedback on my character, I don’t know what am doing
As a new player how can I find a campaign? Every one I see is either paid or they want experienced players.
where do i play?
D&D is a game played in the imagination. You play the game just by talking to other people, through whatever method works for you and your group. Discord is a very popular way to play online, but skype, phone calls, message boards, etc. Anything could work. Or you can play in person. Schools, game stores, libraries, your house, etc.
If you need help finding a group of people to play with, you can read through #find-a-game for instructions and advice on that

I might need to look at that actualy lol
I have never played D&D. But i love role playing. Anyone interested in helping me mke a character?
The rules go over this process in case no one volunteers to walk you through it: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
my bad didn’t know that
You’ll wanna watch a few videos on the basics or read the rules i find videos easier
Hardest part about dnd so far finding a campaign
Don't forget to equip your armor and add some spells! The folks in #character-discussion can probably offer more advice.
What Healer subclasses are recommended, other than Cleric, Artificer or Druid?
Paladins, Bards, and Rangers all get decent healing spells. Warlocks have the Celestial subclass, and Sorcerers have the Divine Soul subclass.
Wizards are in fact the only spellcasting class that do not get access to healing spells at all
Can someone help me with a question about rogues and bonus action?
Bonus action is NOT a second attack, correct?
Correct, Madrox.
hey how do i play?????/////////

Not unless it’s an ability
Like Two Weapon Fighting or a Monk’s Martial Arts
If the Rogue has 2 Light Weapons they could do a Bonus action attack.
Of course Sneak Attack is only Once Per Turn
There are many features in the game that give you the ability to attack using your bonus action, but that is not something that every character can do inherently. The rogue's bonus action from their Cunning Action feature allows them to either dash, disengage, or hide. It does not allow them to attack
Read the game rules, make a character sheet, find a group to join, start playing.
Just as a heads up asking us to teach you everything is a big ask - the more studying you do on your own and then ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel, the quicker you'll get to playing IMO.
While many groups are fine taking on new to D&D players, the more effort you put in to learning on your own the easier it becomes for those groups to take you on because they know they won't have to spend all of their limited gaming time teaching you everything.
can anyone walk me through on voice chat to make a character on roll20?
The first chapter of the free basic rules goes through character creation step by step. I'm not sure how that translates to Roll20's character sheet features though. Likely the Roll20 forums/community would be better positioned for walking you through how the character sheets work on that platform.
Hi sorry if i am anoyying anyone but is there a chat for gruops looking for more player?
can i ask how that works??
And read it carefully - it's not a discussion channel but provides info and instructions on how to use our LFG channels
idk tbh i just joined lol
btw is there an easy way to learn how to play this game, sorry if this gets asked alot (im dumb af)

Hello
hello
Hm? What’s the question?
Oh hi, just regarding a homebrew campaign I'm cooking up. I wanted to advertise it here but idk if I'd get in trouble
That is usually where you can look for players and advertise your games
No no I mean is the content of my game allowed
Homebrew? I mean you can put that in your advertisement it’s a homebrew game
I'm uhh kinda mixing dnd with something else and making a whole story around it
It's actually really fun in practice
So I wouldn't get in trouble for including Yu-Gi-Oh in my dnd campaign?
I mean I saw Genshin Impact and Skyrim D&D games advertised so it’s probably ok
Have fun
Oh uhh does my whole advertisement have to be in one text?
Think so
Cause I already have something typed out but I don't have Nitro so I hit the character limit about halfway through
Btw do you know what's going on in dnd discussion? It looks like a heated debate
People discussing how much is meta gaming based on how regular NPCs would see the PCs and knowing things like classes and stuff
It sounds like they are over thinking it
How do I post a campaign?
I don't see the option to type anything in the looking for players tab
Ahh thank you Neal
Ok I think I messed up
How to join a game on dnd beyond
The DM should be able to share a campaign link with you if they are using D&D Beyond.
It looks like https://www.dndbeyond.com/campaigns/join/<string of numbers>
Hmmmm, didn't mean that to make that clickable. Oh well, it goes nowhere
Maybe give it an hour or so, sometimes the bot can get a bit grouchy and needs to cool down
Helloo! I'm new
Hello hello
So much to learn, I'm nor even sure where to start haha
You're new to dnd aswell?
Yes I am. Not completely out of the oven tho. I did have a couple of sessions with other newbies before but our group fell apart quickly. We had a homebrew (this word a learn like 5 mins ago)
So there's a lot a don't know, but playing games like dos2 and bg3 so long makes want to try this again
You're new too?
Very much yeah. Only did trial 1 session as a ranger with a vicious DM that made me and my party fight azure wolves. We were at an disadvantage cuz there was only 2 attackers which was me and a knight. The other 3 were supports/healers. Most of em kepy doing salvation saves since they got downed while the knight and I were just tryna stay alive. Never did another session after that. So that's why I'm here.
I first played as a monk and apparently they are really squishy at the begging so... I got slapped around a lot hahah
Do you know where to start? Maybe someone could help us out
Were two lost souls huh

Thanks!!
I've read a bit in the past but honestly I learn more by watching or listening. I'm still not confident to start looking for a group
Where do you learn about the lore?
#dnd-lore here I believe?
Yep, we can answer lore questions in #dnd-lore but as for the question of 'where do I learn the lore' the answer is 'depends on what setting you want to learn about'.
Usually the best source is to ask your DM, as they will know what content will be relevant to their game without spoiling anything for you.
Some settings have wikis, but they can be a little overwhelming and will contain lore across all editions.
5e will have books for a setting which may be the best place to go, depending on the setting (some settings and places might have very minimal information in 5e and you may want an older edition source instead).
#dnd-lore is a pretty good place to ask if you know about what you want to learn, like 'What are the best sources for learning more about the elemental plane of fire?' or for answering very specific lore questions like 'Do dragonborn hatch from eggs?' (They do! 🥚 )
Can you guys recommend a site for a character sheet?
hii everyone! soon will be my first ever session zero for dnd🫨 how should i prepare myself for it? should i already have character sheet filled up, and what kind of discussions usually happen? thanks!
So Dnd doesn't have one specific lore, this makes it a little complicated but more exciting. I do know a few DM but both gave up on Dnd after several campaigns fails. Sadly idk who to reach out to
For character sheets you can use the printable/ editable character sheets from WotC such as this fillable form version or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
D&DBeyond is the best imo, though it’s limited in content by what content you’ve paid for, or what content is shared with you by another player or DM
Ohh okay thanks a bunch
For how long have you all been playing DnD?
Content in the 'core books' (DMG, PHB, MM) tend to have generic lore that can usually apply to most settings, unless settings have specific lore that changes that.
So reading the PHB entries on races, and MM entries on monsters will give you a good idea on how most of them will be.
This also goes for books like Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse.
Me?
Only played 1 trial session. Nothing after that so I'm still basically a newbie
Does anyone know how to make a kind of gritty, noir like setting in dnd?
Or does anyone need a DM?
I've been playing near 17 years now, and I know others who have played near 40.
But while playing for a while does help with getting a hang of the rules and picking up some table ettiquette and experience, I wouldn't put too much stock in it as being an indicator of how 'good' a player or DM will be.
One of my players who's only played for about a year or so is one of the best players and DMs I've had.
I'm sorry. What these stand for? So I can find them
17 years!
Same here
D&D is sort of just like the ruleset, much like “Fantasy” is just a genre and not a specific book. Within the game there’s multiple official settings published by WotC and infinitely many custom settings (homebrew worlds) by DMs.
5e generally assumes the Forgotten Realms as a “default setting” of sorts as that is what most official content/adventures focus on. As Elgate said the “big 3” books are much more general.
DMG = Dungeon Master's Guide
PHB= Player Handbook
MM = Monster Manual
There is one full bundle I recommend you should buy that
There is also a Dungeon Master's Screen included in the pack
Only a coulple of sessions with 1 new DM and 5 year experienced DM
I’ve been playing for about 7-8 years myself
Oh wow! I am the most recent one
Then how did you not know the full forms?
Ohh okey! So I've read the player handbook, almost all of it. My DM told me I don't have to read the DMG. First time I hear about MM. I'll read that one
Hmm. Eberron has occasionally been described a bit as fantasy pulp noir.
Also if you're thinking of DMing (go for it!) post in #looking-for-players using the instructions in #find-a-game (We don't allow game offers and requests outside the LFG channels)
But Eberron is paid right?
All them together count 4 games haha
That’s a great topic for #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building depending if you’re looking for advice on setting tone & noir-themed encounters or fleshing out the setting
Are you a player in an upcoming game?
Thank you everyone!
i am!
I'd check with your DM as well. I find knowing the lore isn't going to change anything, but some DMs worry reading the MM will encourage metagaming (Using knowledge your character doesn't have, but you have, to affect your choices IG).
The DMG has some lore entries mostly on planes, but the rest is more really how to make your own lore. So not too required reading for a player.
They are no longer interested in talking about Dnd. So I am kind of looking around. And no wonder I never heard of MM. I'll just take a peak
Your DM will have their own ideas in mind, but as a player I think I'd want:
- a character idea or two that can be adjusted to fit the group and setting
- to discuss how long each session and the campaign are planned for, and what happens if someone can't make a day
- a quick chat about lines and veils or other safety tools to help everyone have a fun experience
It depends, but generally in my opinion Session 0’s as a baseline do 3 things:
- Set the tone, themes, and content of the game (and expand on the game’s initial pitch)
- Set the expectations, lines, and veils of the players & DM.
- Set any important homebrew rules
Session 0’s are also commonly used for players to make characters, so be prepared to restart character creation if the DM would rather players make characters then and there.
False hydra plot anyone? (Just asking if anyone is good with a plot for it lmao)
Also what Star says about "any house rules" (get them in writing!) and "what is the tone, theme and aim of the campaign?"
Damn these are all new terms to me
False Hydra plots can be quite fun but deceptively challenging to run, in my opinion.
What is False Hydra plots?
Brief description: hydra that sings so people can't perceive it
False Hydra is a homebrew creature, so not all DMs know of/ will use them. But they became popular online as a more psychological driven encounter.
If wanting advice on making an encounter for a game #dm-discussion is best bet
thank you!!
(Does it make me sad when I roll up to a game and ask what safety tools they plan to use and get back, "what's a safety tool?" Yes, yes it does.)
I see...
The False Hydra is an unofficial, fan-made monster that was popularized a few years ago by various sources. Its appearance is largely based on fanart of a creature from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. IIRC it got more famous after a DM wrote about their usage of such a monster in a game they ran on Reddit, but I could be misremembering.
One of its key features is that it constantly sings a song that makes it imperceivable to those that can hear it. The other is that it eats people/animals, which wipes the memory of those people from the minds of individuals affected by its song. A common weakness is that the monster cannot easily erase physical evidence, leading to mass hysteria from people having large gaps in memory. The classical example is the False Hydra eating the bartender’s spouse, leading to the bartender believing they were never married. When the party points out their wedding ring on their finger, the bartender comes to the conclusion that the ring comes from some other event.
Ok any more and that’ll be better discussed in #dm-discussion as Elgate said.
Okeyy I understand way better now. Thanks all
Safety tools are creative restrains. If something occurs on the table, a simple conversation with DM and players should suffice. All these tools are just creating a precedent of having less fun and a lot of fatigue on the DM.
Just play and have fun!
That is neither true, nor a topic for this channel
That's a crimson flag right there
If you wish to discuss your opinions on safety tools, #dnd-discussion would be the place to go
Does anyone know what is attunement?
"Some magic items require a creature to form a bond with them before their magical properties can be used. This bond is called attunement, and certain items have a prerequisite for it."
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#Attunement
Ok thank you
That'd be a question for #character-discussion rather than this channel
Is there a way I could get to know a dm that will be interested in teaching a newcomer? Preferably est/cst?

I do wonder, is it considered as a BBEG?
Any monster can be used as a BBEG
It just depends on the structure of your adventure
#dm-discussion is a good place to discuss such things
Understood
Yeah, "BBEG" is more a statement on the relevance and threat level of an encounter. "Big Bad Evil Guy" mostly just means they they are the penultimate fight, and that they are the most plot relevant encounter.
Hi, hi.
Ik this might seem a silly question but is there any rules abt giving your character angel wings/ what race would it be?
There are, sort of
In the D&D book "Mordenkainen Presents: the Monsters of the Multiverse" they have a bunch of race options included in the book that your character can be
One of them is the Aasimar who has some dostant relation to angels and angelkind (though this could also judt be a relation to celestia creatures in general).
They have a feature they unlock at third level that lets them develop one of three abilities they can choose to activate. One of which grants you wings and the ability to fly for a short period of time.
Also, there are no silly questions really. You'd have to very intentionally make a question feel silly for it to actually be silly.
Ok ty
Hey just FYI, that’s not what “penultimate” means. That word refers to the second to last of something. So the “penultimate fight” would be whatever fight you do just before the final boss.
Oh, TIL.
Hello!
Welcome
Howdy!
Hi, question: what websites will you guys recommend for beginners to build their characters?
D&D beyond is good for a guided experience. PDFs and Google Docs are good for a more free form experience, which makes it easier to use any content you might own from sources other than D&D Beyond’s digital store
I sometimes use the aideDD character builder, but it doesn't explain what certain things do like beyond does
But it mostly has everything
Thank you!!
Fight Club 5e is a mobile app that you can use to manage a character sheet - it only comes with the free basic rules materials but you can create everything else from the official materials on your own. Also has dice rolling.
Okay, I will also take note of that!!
Okay, I just finished my character sheet.
You can share it in #character-discussion if you like!
I'm too shy to do that. 💀 I'm just going to wait for someone to take me in their campaign.
No worries. Just an invitation.

Welcome to the hobby

Try out the demo, read the basic rules (at least the first 4 chapters that cover character creation)

This Quick Beginners Guide by One Shot Questers is 3 minutes long: https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU
We also have the channel called #learn-to-play that also covers the basics as well if you'd like a quick reference.
I would rather learn the game by playing it tbh
Unfortunately, DnD is a game with a lot of rules! You'll need to at least understand the basics before playing with other people. Trying to hop into a game with no knowledge would only slow the game down considerably, and you've got to be respectful of everyone's time that they've taken out of their schedule to play.
Oof good luck with that
You can learn as you go to some degree, but you have to put in at least some work before you start. At the very least, you'll need a character, which means you need to know the rules for character creation
Basically not too OP?
There are very strict rules for what you can and cannot do when making a character. So long as you stick within those rules, you can't create anything that is "too OP." But its not just freeform creative writting
Understanding the rules beforehand also hugely promotes a good gameflow & prevents the solidification of bad habits.
So I can still make a drunk 15 y.o With a spell book with a sticker that says only for 21+?
Things like personality, age, and appearance are yours to control. But your character's race, abilities, powers, strengths, weaknesses, etc must be within the rules
Nice
You can make any silly character you'd like so long as:
- You follow the character creation rules as listed
- Your DM is ok with it
He's gonna take phycological damage every time he uses the spell book (hence the drunk) because he thinks he's doing something illegal by using an item not meant for his age.
I’d generalize the second point to make sure your table is ok with it. At some tables I’ve been at I definitely wouldn’t want a <18 PC even if the DM was ok with it, as an example
that would be adding a game mechanic that is outside the rules
It's gonna do nothing he's just depressed asf
hello guys
Hello
To build on Colossus’s point.
While it’s not overly expressed in the rules, there are some guidelines when creating a character.
Generally a character should:
- Be friendly with the party.
- Be compatible with the campaign
- Have a reason to be a proactive character in the narrative
This is to ensure everyone at the table has fun, including the DM.
Hi y'all

For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
Other options
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- This can be played in person and online.
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Actually on that point, I’d add that a character should be enjoyable for you to play. Even if your character meets all the points we’ve mentioned if you’re not having fun playing then the game can become a real drag
Yea
True , this is why sessions zero are important.
It can do a lot of good when the time is taken to discuss if all the players are interested in playing the same type of game.
Also asking if the type of game players what to participate in is the same type of game game the DM wants to run.
Hello. My name is Levon. I been wanting to play D&D for the longest time. My girlfriend bought me a D&D starters kit and I been reading through the books absolutely excited to start our first campaign. However I am still new at this as well as new being a DM as my family would love to start our first session. My issue is getting it started. I want to create and plan our first campaign but having trouble writing it down. Any online templets that can help me draft a session together so I can send it to my folks to look over and plan ahead?

Googling for d&d session plan template yielded these links as the first few results: from Reddit, Sly Flourish, and World Anvil.
#dm-discussion is where a lot of the talk you're after happens, but to add on briefly: the best template will be the one you create yourself because you'll learn what you need to know to run the game. I tend to break my prep into Places the Party Will Likely Go (including brief scene-setting descriptions), People They'll Meet at Said Places and What Those NPCs Know, Stuff the Party Could Find, and Miscellaneous Stuff (things to roll for and the target number, lore tidbits, backstory opportunities).
Hi

The bot post above points in the direction of the Looking For channels. It's not always common that people specify their games are newcomer-friendly, so you'll need to ask!
Thanks
Seems hard to find a game or am I just impatient?
Finding a game is hard. You are trying to find 4-5 other people who want to play in the same type and style of campaign as you and who's schedule can match up with yours, and commit to that time slot for sometimes up to a year or more. It takes a lot of work and communication to find the right group of people to play with.
No, no. Nothing quite that crazy. It may take a few days, or weeks. But if you are actively searching and communicating with people, you should be able to find one eventually
There are a lot more players than DMs, so you're in competition with a bunch of folks for limited slots. But if you spread your net wide, you stand a better chance, rather than only fishing in the same single spot.
Keep your options open, look here, look on Reddit, join other (smaller) DnD discords when you have the opportunity. I'm new at DnD, and it took a couple of weeks but I have gotten the chance to play now
How do I join a smaller discord?
Check for other D&D servers in #looking-for-community
They usually have a link to join their Discord server
Could be a good way to build up a reputation of "Yeah I can see myself playing D&D with them"
I found one in #looking-for-players , another through chatting here, heard of others through reddit/socials. The more flexible you are in times/game styles the better chance you have
Discord servers don't have a time issues as they are always on - D&D games being played may happen at times that don't work for you though.
An important distinction.
Though there are some styles of D&D games that are more time-flexible such as play by post and community games/Westmarches
Is the D&D Beyond App used regularly?
It is a tool that many folks use to help with their D&D games
Should I have a notebook?
It's not a bad idea to have something to take notes - could be a digital tool though if you want
OneNote, Discord channel you keep notes in, etc.
Ah! Remember that many D&D shows/streams are focussed on entertainment first rather than teaching folks how to play D&D "by the rules"
Still not a bad way to pick up things
I just started a little bit ago and started a campaign and level four
Is that any good
Is there a way to share my preferred made character?
The most important things is to have fun (and make sure everyone else is having fun) - if you're doing that, you're doing D&D right.
Cool
If you use DnDBeyond you can share a link to your character and it will embed here.
Otherwise you can use a reputable file/image sharing service and upload your sheet there and link to it (making sure to follow server and linking rules)
You should probably be paying attention to your game, then!
Starting your first campaign at level 4 can be a bit rough. The early levels are designed to ease you into the game. So, starting that high means there is going to be a lot of information thrown at you at once. If you can handle that, more power to you. It just might make things a little extra stressful, in my expirience
How can I get different roles
I didn't start at 4 I've been playing for a few weeks
Thanks
Ah I see. Very nice then!
Thank you
Where is that share button on the app 😂
Let me pull up the app - give me a sec
Hi All, just joined, first post here, I have a question about a ranger drakewarden and using the drake pet to attack, could somone help me with my question?
I honestly have been looking through it so I can learn while I wait
Of course. What is confusing you?
my gf is the ranger, we know she can instruct the drake to attack on her turn using her initiative, but we use DnD beyond and getting the drake to attack is not as straightforward with mouse clicks as regular attacks are, so it's confusing every time
Actually I don't think the app has the ability to do the "share URL" thing at least not very straight forward - I think you'll have to get to the website screens (Manage Character Levels) then select the DnDBeyond account menu (hamburger bars on the right) then go to "My Characters", select the character you want, when the sheet shows click the "Manage" button near the character image, then in the sidebar that shows up, scroll down to "Shareable Link".
Man that's kind of bad.
Off to go make a feature request lol
To clarify, are you confused with how the rules for the Drake's attack work, or just how to do it on D&D Beyond?
Actually both, it would be helpful to better understand Hit Points, Hit Dice, and the difference between AC and Saving Throw? I know these are basic things but there are so many similar terms. I guess understanding the mechanics of the drake attack would be helpful, and then how to do it in DnD beyond....
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
The share button doesn't work lol
It should have copied the URL to your clipboard which you can then share here
Try logging in to your DnDBeyond account through a web browser and accessing the character sheet that way
For me it was dark
I'll check it out now, have been watching several of those episodes already, thx
Watching the show is different. The tutorial series will actually help you learn the rules and terminology.
Ok well, that’s a lot to explain in one post, but I’ll give my best explanation of the drake companion at least. If you still find it to be confusing after that, then I would follow Cloud’s advice and watch the Handbooker Helper tutorial videos on YouTube.
So the first thing to make clear is that the Drake is a second creature, completely separate from the ranger. It has its own turn. That turn is immediately after the ranger’s own turn. The drake cannot move or take actions on the ranger’s turn. So, just like a normal player, the drake can move, take an action, and a bonus action. However, there is a restriction on the drake that says the only action the drake is allowed to take is Dodge, unless the ranger uses their bonus action to give the drake a command. If the ranger does that on their turn, then on the drake’s turn it uses its action to follow that command. That is how you get it to attack and do other things.
When the drake makes an attack, you roll a d20, and add 3, and add the ranger’s proficiency bonus. So at level 3 when you first get this subclass, the ranger’s proficiency bonus will be +2, so 3+2 is 5, meaning you’ll roll the d20 and add 5. There is not a button to automatically add this on D&D Beyond, so you’ll need to just roll a d20 by itself, and add the +5 yourself. Same goes for the damage. It does 1d6+PB damage (which will be +2 at level 3) so if the drake hits, you roll a d6 by itself, and add the +2 yourself.
Thanks @fallen surge , this is helpful, especially the specific die rolls, which are something that takes getting used to, our party just got to level 5
And I suppose the actual health of the Drake is something that would need to be tracked outside of DnD Beyond as well
This playlist is actually very helpful. I've read the relevant sections of the PHB but this explains it a lot better

Hello, I am new here. Pleased to be in your company
I might as well ask…
Is anyone willing to make a character sheet for me?
I’m very new but made a good character, just don’t know how to transfer it to a sheet
It’s on my mobile phone and I’m not able to access a computer atm
You have to learn somehow, try to make your own with tutorials and such, its fun!
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
HEY how does artificer work and how are they diffrent from other spellcasters
They are half casters. They are more focused on enchanting their equipment than they are spell casting
how do they enchant there equipment
They channel magic into their tools and use them to add abilities to their armor, weapons and other various items
yeah but how do you the player do that
My character picks up his magic golden hammer that was given by his father and yells “FOR THE PEOPLE!!!!” Slams it down on some sword he’s been upgrading and now it has a special enchantment
The mechanics are given in the class details
where are the class details
Tasha’s cauldron of everything
Artificer isn't one of the free options
but on dnd beyond you can always select artificer
So you would need to have access to one of the books it's in
Not by default
You may have access via a shared campaign
it was avilible for me when i first launched and im not in any campains
You can select the class but can’t find the details?
I don't know how to explain that since it's never been one of the free options
ok just send me the link to class details
You can find the class by searching DDB
I don't use it personally
If you do actually have access to the book, you should be able to read the class details there
Hey Folks I'm still pretty new to the table top game, having swapped in for a friend a couple times but I've never played a whole campaign with my own character. If I get this vocab wrong forgive me, the DM let us know there are five confirmed for Friday night. In the group chat we decided on a party made up of one fighter, ranger, sorcerer, a TBD druid or cleric, and of course the rogue I called dibbs on.
Were you looking for players or just letting us know your party details?
Thats more context as to the predicament.
Oh, guess I must have missed an earlier conversation
rogues prioritize Dexterity and are typically the most effective with the Crossbow Expert Feat and two handcrossbows
Nah bro I'm just long winded. I always wanted to play the sneaky stabby character in a given rpg. What would be a good road map to compliment the other classes in the party?
As the character levels up
I guess I'm kinda envisioning a recon/DPS build?
that’s more a ranger thing
You know what to steer away from and whats essential?
rangers have best stealth and damage for martial characters
You can play whatever you want, rogues have a pretty good DPS in general iirc because of sneak attack
I was thinking more an assassin but I'm open to being persuaded.
I wanna ask which role is for knights
one hand crossbow
i don't really sure about how to play the game
Knights isn't a class in D&D.
Gloomstalker Rangers have a spell called Pass Without Trace that gives the entire party a +10 to Stealth, using Archery + Sharpshooter + Crossbow Expert, does some of the best damage for martials, and has an initiative boost

i was selling ranger vs rogue
Honestly… I’ve only played three campaigns. Your three teammates (sorcerer, fighter, and ranger) would be more dps oriented, no? So I would try build up dex slowly and go for team supporting rogue, like sneak attacks, distractions, trap finding etc.
And how challenging is that going to be for noob to play?
@cobalt frigate okay
not very, friend started this month and we’ve had 3 sessions and they’ve figured it out
wait there isn't any links
it’s mostly just shooting arrows while occasionally casting a spell when you want to sneak

Gloomstalker isn’t free, so if you’re set on using D&D beyond, you’d have to buy a copy
or borrow a copy from a friend
which is a better idea, corporations don’t need more money
Can a ranger extend his skills into an urban environment if the mission calls for it?
Correct, it’s a big “if”
You have favored terrain
yes, there is a specific urban terrain option
Oh I don't care about that.
I see,now I know a bit of DND
Also, wanted to play wood elf anyway so that fits nicely.
Do any of you guys know where I might be able to sit in on a existing campaign and see how groups play? Because idk if the way my friends played was normal lol
Um guys I wanna ask somthing,is there any ways to join the #tales-from-the-table ?
To be honest, because most tables won't let outside strangers watch.
YouTube's got plenty of podcasts to check out!
That's not a group to join. It's just people telling stories from their games.
ohhh
As I suggested in that channel, it is ideal to read the descriptions of said channels.
That channel is not a group, its to relay stories that some have had
But how to play the games?
So back to the original premise, what's the build plan for a Ranger like that.
I already told you to read the free Basic Rules
Gotta find a group
You didn't read the rules that fast.
I can because I read some before
Okie
Thanks Saragonvoid
Well, you kept referring classes as "roles"...
Didn’t mean to reply to that man
He’s clearly a new player?
My English kinda bad
It’s okay
Hi, I'm trying to build a custom lineage character, dwarf/Goliath barbarian. How would I make that a reality?
Sorry I am too new to here,I might be annoying
Mine too. I spoke Texan as my first language.
I just want to find someone to play with me
No, that guys probably the only one that’s sour right now… you’re fine trust
There's a ton of online games.
I am good at desgin and roleplays
Again, check #find-a-game to start off if looking for people in this server to play with
It is a slow process trying to not only find a group, but also meeting up and beginning the campaign. It all depends on your group scheduling. It’s not gonna be a snap of the fingers sadly.
Yea ik but I want someone teach and play with me since someone kinda mean to me I felt
What’s your first language?
Have you tried finding any Cantonese DND servers?
I need someone do a roleplay with me
yea
but that dude's account was dead
Well the roleplaying doesn’t happen right away anyways, you still would usually have a session 0 or wait to join when you get into a new group.
Just wait patiently for someone to ask if anyone wants to join their party or if anyone is forming one
Hm...
As a new player, I can say that true..
I've been playing online for the past week, just trying to find a group for irl sessions, not proving to be easy
Irl group?
Unfortunately I don't know the game well enough for that.... Plus I'm based in England, location is another thing to consider for irl games
no need to wait
we will just randomly play the roleplay
I don't know well too,I learnt from online
There's already some servers out there. A couple that I use -shores of Ebaria, -litlcord
I can make a global
I use those the most, I would say
Yeah, and I still fall for the dual scimitar and bow loadout made so famous by the Drow Ranger and Co.
dam
can't send
I think I am leaving this place
since I can't play roleplay here
I could build a Drizzt Do'urden huh?
I wish people can join me
Mr cat, see DM
May I inquire as to why you seemingly do not wish to take the moment to examine this server and use what it offers?
I just can't understand the rules and I am too new to discord
There's literally thousands of servers with people waiting to do that.
Which is why its imperative to take a moment and examine what is before you, rather than jumping around all over the place.
There's also thousands of tutorials games you can watch on the internet to get the basics down. Just go to YouTube, find a beginner channel, and watch some games.
Okay
Take a moment. Kick up your legs, weary traveller.
Examine. Analyze. Digest. Comprehend.
Yo same here actually ^^"
Like, I have some ideas for one or two characters in mind, but don't know how to even begin to implement them lmao
I'd also be open to find a group

You can find basic rules here, but if you've got any specific questions feel free to ask!
where i can play
- online or in person, you just need a way to communicate. Popular online ways of playing include discord, virtual tabletops such as roll20, or forums
who i can play
- you can make a character following the Step by Step Character Creation rules found in the basic rules
how can i make a character
- same as above, use the basic rules, it takes you through the process step by step
how do modifiers work
- that's also explained in the basic rules, but simply put they're numbers you add to rolls to improve the result of the roll and thus increase your chance of success
everything else
- the basic rule are your friend, but don't try and learn "everything"
what i am doing here
- presumably attempting to get beginner level help getting started with D&D
why i thought this was a good idea
- only you can answer that
I was about to ask
Typically you make a new character for each campaign to fit that campaign specifically
Usually you make new characters to fit the theme
is there like a spreadsheet or something to help me make a character?
There's a character sheet
these are walls of text
Yes, D&D has lots of rules and text, but you don't need to read it all, let alone memorise it
The intent is that you reference the rules as you play and the more you play the more you remember the rules without needing to reference them
so I should just pick one from the pdf first right before I know what I'm actually doing?
My suggestion for making a character for the first time is just picking one race and one class and just making that one.
I would read through the following chapters from the basic rules
Ch. 1: Step-By-Step Characters
Ch. 7: Using Ability Scores
Ch. 9: Combat
Think of it a little bit like a cook book for cakes.
You don't need to read the entire book before making a single cake. You just read a little at the beginning on what some of the terms mean, and how to follow instructions and then think 'Well Sponge cake sounds simple and tasty, I'll make that'.
And it doesn't have to be perfect to still be tasty, and once you've made one it really helps click how to make most cakes.
So for characters you can just say.. 'I want to make a dwarven bard'. Work your way through that (doesn't have to be perfect to be fun!) and at the end you'll likely have picked up 90% of what you need to know to make any character.
I want to like make one of the scariest looking people a healer
you know what this isn't helping, I'll like sleep on a youtube video or something
how do I look for games, specifically on discord

While it is possible to learn some things as you go, you will be expected to put in at least a little effort to learn things before joining a game. At the very least, you will need a character, so learning the rules on Character Creation is important. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
Just a heads up but trying to organize or find games outside of the Looking For Game channels is off topic. Please read (carefully) #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
Also consider checking out some of the D&D servers advertised in #looking-for-community
Read what I just posted

hello! I joined this in hopes to get some insight on how to be a DM and play DND. I bought the essentials kit and my group tried to play but have absolutely no idea what to do
Are you primarily in need of help with the basic rules, or with the act of DMing?
Mostly the act of DMing. i tried to read the DM Adventure book the kit came with but have no idea what i’m supposed to do and what others are supposed to do.
The folks over in #dm-discussion can probably help you out best!
okay thank you!
Hello! I have always wanted to play dnd and I have characters that have been collecting dust in the dnd beyond menu for like a year now but I have no idea where to start

I just started this year and I have only really attempted playing once with my friends but we haven’t been able to meet up since our first session
Hello my son and I started playing D&D yesterday. We went to a local shop that had a D&D night. I have bought the starter kit, feel super overwhelmed by it. I am trying to find a gaming session on the weekend so my husband can join us, going after he gets off work is a lot. The store I found says you need a level 5 character, I have level 2 charters I am so confused on how to upgrade the char taters to level 5. The game we played yesterday they kindly upgraded the characters for us to level 10. We got the characters from dnd adventure club and really like them, and would like to use them. Any advice on how to upgrade? I looked on YouTube and the videos I found were not helpful they over complicated all of it in a very perky way, I just want to be done but I spent to much money on this game. So overwhelmed and frustrated.
Is your character sheet physical, PDF, or via a website like D&D Beyond? @finite sandal
Im new to dnd in general. And it looks REALLY fun. And I'd like to learn about it
