You mean how do DMs figure out how many players they need?
The DM will decide how many players will be in the game, if that's what you're asking.
If you're looking for games to play, check out the link below:

Question if I didn't pick an oath for my paladin can I talk to the dm and pick one now(thinking devotion)
Has that character reached 3rd level yet?
you pick an oath at level 3, so unless you arent level 3 then you should be fine
I started at lv 3
Then talk to your DM.
Then you’ll have to choose an oath before you start playing
They gave us pre made characters because it's like a social event aimed for newcomers and I played for this paladin for 2-3 sessions already (no LV ups)
hello what is homebrew in d&d
Homebrew is anything that's not official from Wizards of the Coast (WotC).
Are you sure the pre-made character doesn’t have an oath selected?
And it is level 3?
The class itself is paladin conquer I think and it's lv 3
Oath of Conquest is the sub-class.
I see I didn't know until now
If you want to play an Oath of Devotion paladin then ask your DM if you can create your own character rather than use a premade one.
But from what I see it's basically what I do with him anyway , basically I crush enemy's but outside of Battle can I still be sorta friendly and good?
You choose your Personality, Bonds, Ideals, and Flaws to determine how your character behaves.
Oh I thought that the oath kinda dictates that
No
Think about it this way: your job doesn’t dictate your personality irl, so your Paladin oath doesn’t dictate your personality in dnd
Then I was worrying for nothing
Oath is a sub-class. Sub-class is just a speciality.
That said, paladin oaths are unique in that they have tenets that paladins try to follow.
I read them and I followed that by accident
If you don't like the Conquest tenets then choose another Oath that suits your concept for your paladin.
My character basically if you are evil you should be dead and il fix that
Another question are there god's that a conquest oath paladin worship or they are on their own?
Paladins don't need a deity to follow (their powers are granted by their faith in their oath and not necessarily from a god).
If you do decide to follow a deity then ask your DM which god is appropriate.
Alrght thanks

Apologies
What two ability score improvements should I use for a variant human druid?
As a druid, you probably want CHA WIS, CON, and DEX as your top three scores.
Druids are WIS casters, right?
But a +1 is best used when turning an odd-numbered score to an even one.
(Putting into an already-even score gives you no immediate benefit.)
Im brand new and have never actually played as i dont really have anyone to play with and literally 1 week ago did it occur that you dont need to be in person but can play over discord or zoom or something

i cant understand haste from the spell description. Is it for how many rounds and this round or next round etc. can someone help me?
Until the spell ends, the target's speed is doubled, it gains a +2 bonus to AC, it has advantage on Dexterity saving throws, and it gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object action.
The spell lasts for up to 1 minute
Haste lasts 1 minute (10 rounds).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/haste
is there actually any good uses for haste when you are level one if i were to use it on my self?
You can’t cast haste at level 1. It’s a 3rd level spell
However, whether something is good is a better question for #optimization
If players ever want to laugh in the face of physics
Tabaxi rogue
120 feer of movement in 1 round
AND you can still attack
I think it’s more impressive when you consider that speed as consistent, since the average human can move that fast if they sprint
D&D and physics only have a passing familiarity anyway
Now tabaxi rogue hasted and dashing 👀
Can someone explain how dnd works? I’m kinda confused about it but it seems fun because I like making characters and stuff

And I mean, combat is sprinting anyway in dnd
Your average combat is under 30 seconds
I have a question
What is it?
I'm new and I have time, never played before but I have tons of experience with rpg's
if you're looking for a player hit me up... (I'm probably gonna do something stupid)
I need help with a character sheet

are people only using fifth edition?
The large majority are. It’s the most recent edition.
If you want to ask about the older editions then head on over #dnd-elder-editions
By default we talk about 5E here but people still play the older editions.
Is there anywhere to view banned items for adventure league by chance?
anyone want to add me to their campaign? I want to just jump in and figure it out
May I be honest with you? Finding a game may take a days or weeks.
As I said in the other channel you should read up on the rules because it will increase you chances of being accepted to a table because it means less work for the DM to pause the game to teach you.
Check out the links above.
Hey sup guys
@earnest swallow I'm also looking to jump in
@earnest swallow if all else fails we can try a little one-shot. I had built a campaign although all my shit is gone after my phone died.
Check #find-a-game for a game you two
Find a game isn't really working for us. I just check newcomers and if he wants to game tonight I do to. It'll be sloppy but I can dm.
Recruiting for games is not permitted outside of our dedicated channels.
If you want to speak directly to another person, you can send them a direct message.
I tried to post in looking for a dm however there was no posting option
There’s instructions in #find-a-game.
It just sent me to discussion
Just type /looking-for in any channel that lets you type, select the one you want from the list of suggestions, and hit send.
For Chris, you should definitely try to go through the basic rules before jumping in. While more user friendly than previous editions by far, 5e is still rules heavy and isn’t super well-suited to “jumping in and figuring it out from there.” It’s somewhat common courtesy to have at least a passing familiarity with the rules as a preventative to bad habits as well as promoting a smoother game flow
If nothing else, learning the basics while you search will increase your odds of getting accepted for a game.
I've already wrote a character backstory, I know what class and race I'm playing, progression or skill acquisition is usually lv or milestone based, i've gone over the skill list for my class, I'd like to discuss multi classing and stat allocation but for the most part I think I understand it... I just need experience actually playing but I have played rpg's and games based on the d&d model like baldurs gate and such. I've been playing rpg's for like 30 years
I just never got into d&d... but I'm ready to give it a shot
I'll have to reference the rulebook plenty of times during my first play but that's how I learn, for instance if the DM describes various conditions for combat I'm gonna have to go and look at it again to understand the differences but i'll commit it to memory once I experience it
I read the rules and made a character, I downloaded the apps and got flashed banged with knowledge and I don’t know what to do now
Check #find-a-game
Relax with the knowledge that you don't need to memorize or even read everything
pretty much man... it's kinda overwhelming, that's why I want to just jump in and trial by fire
So do I use the character the app gave me or the one I made
Do you guys wanna see what I came up with? So I can get feedback
I recommend making characters for practice but don't get attached to it because 99% of the time the DM will ask you to create a new character from scratch to fit their campaign setting.
that's fine, I'm pretty good at writing and can tweak the backstory to fit any setting
I had to change characters 11 times to fit the campaign
Now I’m a halfling bard
ima start with a human pld, I want to get used to the game before I try multiclassing
I am fairly new I just had session 0 with my friends what about y’all?
Probably a good idea. Multiclassing can get you into the weeds if you don't plan things
My dm had to keep me out of that area 😂
I don't think it's as complicated in 5e as some previous editions, but there's still trade offs. And it's easier to know what you're looking at once you're more familiar with the classes themselves
actually is multiclassing a pure 1 to 1 ratio? or is it nerfed like main class/sub classes are in some games? or do you unlock all weapon types and skills for each class when you multiclass?
In 5e, you can multiclass whenever you level up. And you do it by taking a level in a different class instead of your current one
You don't get all the same first level stuff though
ok so just like baldurs gate
And similar abilities don't double up.
Can't speak to BG3 as I haven't played it, but likely at least similar since it's based on 5e
where you switch classes but retain only what you have leveled for your starter class
That doesn't sound like quite the same thing
If you multiclass at level 2, you can be a level 1 wizard and level 1 cleric for example. And you'll have the level 1 abilities for each class. But you won't get all the starting proficiencies/equipment for the second class
And there's some special calculations for spell slots
ok then are you able to level both classes to 20 simultaneously?
No. The max level is always 20
Which is why every multiclass level is a trade off of things you won't be getting in your original class
Hence the need for planning :)
Ahhhh ok that makes sense! that's what I was curious about. so there are some drawbacks to doing it and you should pick your starter class bases on what you plan on changing classes to
Yeah, you'll want to think about exactly when you take each level for the split and the order you go in
Especially since most D&D games don't go all the way from level 1 to 20
So delaying key class features can have a big impact on how you play the character
ASI is at class levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19. If you multiclass you may not many (or even any) ASI.
Hello hello im new to dnd beyond dnd its not even in my country i played rpg games but none of them where like dnd so can i have some insight to what should i do?
I created a dwarf cleric as my character i like Playing support
I have a question
what is a "homebrew" I've only played dnd once and don't know to to much about dnd
The short answer is any content (races, classes, items, rules) that aren't part of the officially published content put out by WotC
OH okay thank you

Hello Everyone! Hope everyone is having a good evening
So it's been sometime since I've played D&D. If I'm being honest, not since about 1981
I see there have been a metric of ton of changes and it looks like the newest is 5e. Is this correct?
yeah, 5e is the modern incarnation
theres some playtest for a "5.5e" but you can ignore that
If you want to talk about AD&D head on over to #dnd-elder-editions
That's kind of why I'm here first
I see a lot of changes and thinking maybe I should start out with the earlier editions
There are many of us who started playing D&D back in the AD&D days.
Is there a steep learning curve for 5e OldMan?
5E is much more new player friendly than AD&D was.

Sounds like a plan. Thank you very much!
for the druid class it says prepare instead of learn spells, do I prepare them every long rest or something like that or do I prepare them in character creation
Druids prepare their spells at the end of each long rest
ok cool thanks
As a new player something that I do that embarrasses me is that I reach for the wrong dice a lot
It happens. I wouldn't worry too much about it but if it is something that still bugs you a lot, consider buying different colors of dice to better differentiate them.
Or do what I do. Have so many dice, you can have a different bag for each type
I currently have the dice that came with the starter set and then I bought some fancier ones recently
The best way to know what die you are holding is to leave the dice on the other side of the table and ask someone to get you one
Um hi?
Hey there!

Just going out on a limb and assuming these might help you out ^
Uhm hello! Im kind of new here and uhm i already have a character made with dnd beyond but im not sure if its fit for a beginner level and if im supposed to make a character ONLY when i join a group for compatibality??
dont let no one tell you no. play who you wanna play as long as it fits in the world. like guns, race ect
Oh!! Thats great then thank you god!!
any time
I disagree and think that’s bad advice. It’s not a bad idea to have a character ready to go, but before you join a game you should discuss that character with a DM. It may be incompatible with the game they’re running for any number of reasons.
For example, you might make a Warforged character when the DM is running a game set in Faerun. Or a LE character when the DM only wants good alignment PCs
i just said that
If I'm a dwarf with the racial ability stone cutting is there any real need for me to get mason tools to be proficient in stone work?
What do you mean by “not fit for a beginner level”?
Hmm that is a thing i need to keep in mind ok thank u !!
like i said play who you want just make sure it fits lmao don't gotta make one for the camp
Masons tools have some niche benefits, you may want to look into them. If you want to make your character extra good with stone masonry then go for it
Oh uhm im not sure what a beginner character is allowed to do like are they allowed multiclassing? (My ready character is one theyre ranger/druid) and like how much gold or currency are they supposed to carry as a beginner? Etc, etc
what level?
Level 1
You’d be at least level 2, where most campaigns start at level 1
Like baby level
@wheat crystal ok cool thanks
Perhaps pick one to start then grab the other one when you level up
There’s no concept of a beginner character
Hmm that seems more bttr then ig ill do druid then
I will say that if you’re a new player I wouldn’t recommend multiclassing
Starting gold is explained in the same place as starting equipment
Your class table and background should inform you of the gold you start out with, if any.
Your starting class table specifically should allow you to pick starting equipment or gold (background may add extra). It’s generally advised to take starting equipment
Hmm ok ill go edit brb
Hi I'm new to DND and this server in general and I was just wondering if there are other games than the ones in the looking for players server? Me and my friend are looking for a game but none of the time slots suit us.

This server can also be a big help to new DMs.

pardon my intrusion is this server newbie friendly ? I don't want to cause discomfort with my presence I never played dnd In my life and I'm excited to try but I'm afraid people don't like newbies joining the community (or so I was told) but that aside I apologize if this seems annoying to anyone .
Absolutely! We have this channel just to help out newbies, and have resources to help in the pins, and are available to help if you have any questions.
#dnd-discussion can get a tad overwhelming at times for new players who don't know much about the game yet and seeing rapid fire discussion on it using new terms can be a lot, but in here we try to keep everything new player friendly.
Note that we don't actually play games on this server- if looking for a new player friendly group, you'll need to find one through #find-a-game 's instructions and the looking-for-x channels here
I see Thank you for the explanation I will try my best to inform myself and hopefully be able to join this interesting and intriguing game

thank you I hope I'm not a nuisance
I made a character what now ?
Really it's just finding a game. Note that you might have to edit or make a new character for what ever game you join, but once you've made one, you've got the idea of how to make any.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Finding a game can always be one of the biggest hurdles at first.
There's the find a game channels here, and also other places- r/lfg on reddit, the game finders on VTT platforms like roll20's looking for group, so on.
In person also check for local facebook groups or check to see if meetup.com has any. Local game stores are a big one to check out, even if to ask if they know of local groups if they don't host.
or kidnapping friends and playing a oneshot with them.
It can take some time, and one of the first big hurdles. It's a bit like online dating. You are going to spend multiple hours a week (usually) with these people, so you want to make sure you all vibe well, and it can take time to find or make that.
Also sadly some online groups are a bit flakey.
Looking into oneshots, Adventure League and westmarches (feel free to ask what these are) can be a good way to join lower commitment games and see if you find people whose play style clicks with yours, and then you slowly network and form a group together from recommending each other to games.
Or you can be lucky and hit it off with the first group you join.
Communication is a key part of all of this and session 0s and chatting with the DM before joining can be a good way to feel out if you all suit each other before commiting to a game.
Finding a game even to try out can be tricky and take some patience. In the meantime, you can always hang out here, share ideas, get feedback and find out more about D&D in general.
I see so this is not looking good for me , I was expecting it to be honest
I will try my best
can anyone explain me the difference in rolling and buying? (Stats
like is it one of em luck one of em u select it
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
With point buy no Abilitiy pre racial modifier can be above 15 or below 8. You can use point buy to make standard array, so it's essentially a way to keep it balanced but a bit more flexible.
Rolling is fun and very traditional, but far more luck based. You roll 4d6 (four x 6 sided dice) and drop the lowest dice. You might get as low as a 3 (if you rolled four 1s) or as high as an 18 (if you rolled at least three sixes), with an average of 11.5. That's pretty swingy, although numbers tend higher rather than lower.
Im completely new to D&D as a whole, where and how do I start? Thank you in advance

The above resources might be able to help out.
Note you do not need to read all of the rules before playing. Think of it a bit like a cookbook- read enough to know how to start cooking (Character creation and combat is worth looking over) but you don't need to read every single recipe before ever starting (All the races and classes and spells and so on).
Just having a general idea can help.
You can make a character by yourself to get some practice, although you might need to make a new one for any game you join. And ask questions here if you get stuck!
And then it's finding a game, which can sometimes take a little longer. And as Mr Smith points out up here, in the meantime while looking for a game, just chat here and learn more!
Question I started to look at my race (a elf)and it says I'm proficient in perception what does that mean?
You may add your proficiency bonus to perception checks
Can you give like an example?
Do you see the skills part on your character sheet? Perception should be listed under there
Yes
At level 1 your proficiency bonus is+2 so whenever your dm says you make an ability check with a skill you're proficient in (like perception) you may add your proficiency bonus (+2) to the d20 roll
Ah I see thanks

Thank you so much! I think I did understand how to play in general, but I have some doubts regarding the Master figur
Figure*
I do not wish to be the master at the moment, but my friends and I are all beginners. How do I teach someone how to be a Master? And can I prepare the map myself, even if I'm a player?
First up, you'd need a volunteer to be the DM for your group. Their role is to present the content of an adventure, describe the environment, the situations and characters they meet.
It's good for a DM to have a grasp of the rules, and often recommended that they start with a pre-written adventure.
It would not be typical for a player to help a DM with preparing a map, as it takes away from the experience of discovery and it can be hard to separate what the character knows from what the player has seen.
If you’re all new, I’d suggest starting with a pre-written adventure.
Here’s a couple short, free options made specifically for beginners:

https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/dnd_turn_ref_2022.pdf
One tall one short
Not sure if the link is good, but I found this searching for dnd combat actions.
Oh, got it, thanks! How should a map be prepared?
For starters either draw the location, by hand or using an online tool like Dungeon Scrawl, or generate one from the tools at watabou.itch.io, or check #dnd-maps for pretty ones. Other options exist.
I'd suggest a good map for a combat encounter has multiple routes, options for cover, a secret and something interesting to discover or engage with.

thanks i’ll come back when i’m finished
hi everyone
hi can i somehow find group that is playing lord of the rings session ?
do i have to place advert in looking for community ?
You can advertise yourself in #750812887697588356 . You can look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community to see if there are any games or communities that interest you
What's its called when you make a campaign but like don't want to dm?
Writing
Possibly 'Writing a book' or worldbuilding.
I'm not being glib, that's just adventure writing
Well im a new player but I very much enjoy coming up with campaigns and ideas like that
But I also want to learn the game more before trying to be a dm
And that's not meant to come across as snarky, yeah. Just genuinely, you can make worlds and write adventures, without actually having to run them.... but it really helps to actually run them and know how they play in practice.
I wouldn't be afraid of Dming when new. It can be a lot of fun, and there is no need to hold yourself to really strict standards- Dms can make mistakes, can try new things, and are players along with the rest of the group. The group can help each other remember rules and come up with ideas.
So I wouldn't know how that works really
It depends on the platform you're using
If you're new, don't
Classes are the single most difficult and time consuming thing to create
Yeah I figured that I wonder if I can look for homebrew classes?
If you want to get into homebrew, start small and work up; races and feats first, then spells and magic items, then monsters, then subclasses, then classes. That'd be my recommendation
Homebrew is like trying to build a new part for an engine.
I appreciate the advice
Without an understanding of how the engine works, making a new part for it can easily break things.
That's fair
On Reddit look in /unearthedarcana and sort by top
Hi guys wondering how do I gain access to these channels?
- looking-for-dm
- looking-for community
- looking-for paid
They don't appear under the "Find a game" tab and when I click on them it just says I am restricted.
Check #find-a-game for instructions.
Are you asking how to view the channels, or post in them
If view, just go to:
#750812887697588356
#looking-for-community
#paid-looking-for-game
If you mean post, you'll want to go to #find-a-game and carefully read the instructions
View, I think to post I need to fill out a form?
Should it not appear
There's no restrictions to view the channels
Oh but to reply i must fill out a form for each?
You can reply to any existing post using the thread attached to that post.
They'll only appear if
- you selected the corresponding option during the server on-boarding process to say that you're interested in finding games
or - you manually add the channels to your channel list via id:browse
If you want to submit a post of your own, there's instructions in #find-a-game.
Ohhh ok thank you!
Or if you go to the channel and hit the "Add to Channel List" button at the top of the screen.
Thanks for the help guys!
Do all character are pretty much the same or have disadvantages and advantages?
Characters, classes especially, do have very different abilities and thus very different strengths and weaknesses.
Every character is generally going to be a different class and race
Hiya prob a question that has been asked milion times before but how to get in to dnd it seems like a quite a high barier to join
Not to mention the specialisations and choices within classes
What kind does a fighter have?
Have a look at the basic rules, they’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
@topaz storm Overall, that's probably a discussion better-suited for #character-discussion . A few summaries starting over there.
It depends on the subclass, but fighters are good with all weapons, they have one of the higher HP pools, and they can use the heaviest armor, so they have high survivability. They get multiple attacks and most (all?) of their abilities recharge easily, so they have lots of gas in the tank to keep going through multiple combats.
They don't get nearly as many options for combat as casters, for example, so they can feel simple. And they might not have as many obvious things to do outside of combat, but that (I think) forces a player to be a bit more thoughtful and creative rather than "pushing a button" on a character sheet.
Oh
TYSM!!
Im sorry but wouldf you please tell me how does the personality and background affect my character?
ik its seem obvious but im quite of a smooth brain
The personality section is really just for your own benefit. It's meant to spark ideas and help you roleplay your character. You can use that sections as much or as little as you like.
Mechanically, the background you choose gives you particular bonuses and equipment, as well as a feature that may or may not be relevant in play. Narratively, it can help flesh out who your character was prior to adventuring.
Personality has no mechanical benefit, but it helps to guide you as the player when it comes to deciding how a character would act in a given scenario.
Oh ok that makes sense
also i have a question about illusion magic
how to get there and how does it even work
Each illusion spell will explain how that specific spell works.
There are illusion spells in the game, and the dice generally decide when/if it works.
Plus DM input.
The illusion spells from the Basic Rules can all be found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/school/illusion?filter-source=1
If you have questions about any specific spell, #dnd-rules can help.
Oh oh few more things whats the common lvl to start with? and would someone be fine with giving me input on my pc?
Most folks get intimidated by all the rules, but the core isn't too difficult to understand:
- The DM describes the situation. They control the world and everyone in it except for the players.
- Each player controls one character (typically). Each person describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
All the rest is to help decide when/why/how things go so everyone can participate equally in the story. It avoids the "Nuh uh vs yuh huh" sorts of arguments.
some start at 1, some start later at things like 3 or 5, it depends on the DM
It varies a lot, but is generally somewhere in the 1-5 range
I recommend starting at 1 as a new player
and if you want input on your character, you could ask in #character-discussion
Although it is very common for more experienced players to start at 3 or 5
When can you take a short or long rest when your currently playing in a campaign?
Mostly up to where you are
When the DM says. Genuinely, not meant as snark.
A long rest needs you to be in a safe place to set up camp and have a full rest for 8 hours, like a safe clearing or an inn
Ahhh
A short rest is a little more flexible, being much shorter, but it still needs to be relatively safe
You can only take a long rest once every 24 hours.
You as a player can certainly ask to rest whenever you like.
But as noted, you probably want to wait until you're somewhere safe to do so.
If you try to nap in the middle of the dragon's lair, you may be discovered before your rest can complete.
In real life if you camp in the the forested mountains where there are bears and cougars/mountain lions then your rest is very likely to be interrupted...
In D&D, the DM may roll for possible random encounters depending where you set up camp.
Point is: while the success of an attempted rest depends on the situation (which depends on the DM), the actions of your character are up to you.
So you can decide to try and rest whenever you like.
Player: "I'd like to try and take a rest!"
DM: "Alright, you all settle down in the nearby alcove, trying to keep quiet while you catch your breath, and..."
Hi just joined and want to learn how to play i dont have anything not Even a character just some dragon models i thought were cool and i dont want to spend money yet can someone guide me or just help

Hi! I'm a new GM looking for advice, I'm wondering, is it possible to run Lost Mine of Phandelver before The Shattered Obelisk? Do the two stories weeave into each other or is Shattered Obelisk a complete rewrite of the original story?
Shattered Obelisk as I know is a rewrite.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
yeah i was gonna send this, just didnt know the command
It's just (?)new
@hearty rose The first 4 chapters of Shattered Obelisk rewrite the original LMoP adventure in order to set up the events of the last 4 chapters.
They also (in my opinion) provide a little bit better connective tissue between those 4 chapters, and up the challenge a couple times by (small spoiler in case) ||replacing standard-issue goblins with psionic goblins||.
As a personal recommendation do you think there's a way to still tie the original story into the new one? Or should i just run the two stories separately?
the first four chapters are the original story, just with some things laced in to seed the back half.
If you want specifics then ask in #1029833015423143957
Oh I understand now, thanks for the advice @carmine shuttle
Yeah, I was staying very generic on purpose.

Hey yall, I'm pretty new here but I've played dnd very in depth before. Lately I've been very interested in getting back into the swing of things but my old group has disbanded after high school. I'm not sure where to start in looking for a new group, any suggestions?

Omg thank you so much!
Is it possible to have a druid dragonborn?
Any playable race can be any class (within the DM's approval because some DMs don't allow certain races in their campaign setting).
Ok, thanks
ok i got another qeustion its about ranged attack of the goblin it says ( range 80/320) does 80 mean the minium range ? and 320 the maximum?? so what happends belowe 80? and after 80?
0-5: disadvantage (from ranged attacks in close combat)
6-80: normal
81-320: disadvantage
321+: impossible
80 ft is the maximum distance of normal range while the 320 ft is the maximum distance of the long range.
The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon's normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon's long range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. You can't attack a target beyond the weapon's long range.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
When you have either advantage or disadvantage, you roll a second d20 when you make the roll. Use the higher of the two rolls if you have advantage, and use the lower roll if you have disadvantage. For example, if you have disadvantage and roll a 17 and a 5, you use the 5. If you instead have advantage and roll those numbers, you use the 17.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#AdvantageandDisadvantage
When a roll has Disadvantage, you roll two 20-sided dice instead of one, and you use the lower result
ok
another one 😄 if i cast blindness on a ranged attacker . once he failed to do a saving throw. can he still attack?
Yes, they would have the Blinded condition:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Blinded
- A blinded creature can't see and automatically fails any ability check that requires sight.
- Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature's attack rolls have disadvantage.
ok thx 😄
They will be able to, but will suffer disadvantage and the DM may rule that the ranged attacker doesn't know which space to target- how they do so is up to the DM however. Remember that there are other ways to detect where someone is. They may still be able to hear where you generally are, but hitting you is another matter.
ty
Remember to read what spells do and if they mention something that seems like a condition (restrained, blinded, deafened, poisoned so on) remember you can look up exactly what those conditions do: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions
One general tip for D&D is that it's impossible to remember all the rules off the top of your head, but you can get pretty good at looking them up. That's what the book (and sites) are there for- referencing when you need to double check.
i find some times the books be more confusing than asking a expierenced player
D&D is a game of rules. You can't avoid reading the rules. You don't need to memorize them all but familiarize yourself with them. Look them up later if you forget.
Which is pretty common, especially when new and not used to where things are in the book. This is more a tip that really you'll pick up over time- learning where to look up rules yourself. And if not sure or still stuck, absolutely ask away! That's also why we have #dnd-rules , because even experienced players will need to double check or miss things.
But while answering questions, we'll try to point out where we got the rules so you know where you can look them up in future too.
well english ist my mother language and reading and understanding the phrase is another thing 🙂
there is another thing i want to have cleared is the bonus attacktion. as a wizard can cantrips be casted as a bonus action??
Only if they say they do.
Most things in the game cost an action, and very few things can be done as bonus actions. Read each spell individually to see what it requires, but the vast majority of spells cost an action to cast.
Spells, cantrips or higher level, will say what action is needed to cast them.
Take Firebolt
CASTING TIME
1 Action
So that cannot be cast as a bonus action.
As far as I'm aware, Wizard has no cantrips that can be cast as a bonus action.
Magic stone is an example of a bonus action cantrip, but is not on the wizard spell list
CASTING TIME
1 Bonus Action
so if its not stated thats its a bonus action on the spell desctription that it cant be used as bonus action correct?
You have to satisfy whatever the listed casting time is.
Correct.
ok
DnD is thankfully very literal with its rules: if it says you can, then you can. If it doesn't say you can, you probably can't.
And if there's any ambiguity that's for the DM to rule on.
ok thx guys ur all great
Which channel should I go to if I need help with a homebrewish campaign
Thank you
Where do you look for players?
Check #find-a-game
Forgive me if this is obvious, but I’m fairly new to DND and was wondering: are the “books” that I’ve heard of actual stories, with characters and whatnot, or are they just guides to playing dnd?
There's both!
There were/are novels and comic books published in the past if that's what you're asking.
If you're a DM looking for players you'll want to follow the instructions in #find-a-game and post in either #looking-for-players or even #looking-for-community depending on you need. Be sure to read the instructions and channel descriptions carefully.
Oh interesting! Asking because I’ve been looking for books to read and after playing BG3 I feel like I’d really enjoy an official story set in the dnd universe
There's even been novels published this very year!
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/721108/dungeons-and-dragons-the-fallbacks-bound-for-ruin-by-jaleigh-johnson/
Ooh :0 thanks for letting me know!! I’ll definitely look into it—are there any you’d recommend?
The Legend of Drizzt series by R.A. Salvatore is probably the most popular choice.
Ty
For more lists you can also check WotC's website: https://dnd.wizards.com/fiction
Some of the old famous ones that really helped get D&D rolling back in the day was the Drizzt series mentioned by Spam and also the Dragonlance books.
The extended Dragonlance saga, mostly by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman, is probably up there, too.
I made a Druid who gained wealth by sneaking into a bank as a mouse but after no action, forgot how to transform. Is that possible?
As long as you start off with only what your background/class allows, and as long as your DM is ok with the idea, it could work!
Hi new dm/ Player
No, he transformed back, but relaxed with his money so never had to transform again and become an animal and forgot how to
So why are they a Druid?
Because they can transform to animals
A backstory usually works best as a short explanation for why you are an adventurer, maybe some lifetime goal, and maybe some connections to the world you’re playing in.
I wouldn’t use a backstory that nullifies one of your class abilities without discussing it with your DM and group you’re playing with.
And I wouldn’t get too fixed on setting up a background until you have a DM/game so you can fit it to the game
I realise I didn't explain fully, part of the backstory is he cant forget his criminal life and takes contracts to give him the adreneline
So just use a criminal background but leave the details more open ended to best fit whatever game you play in.
Alr
if i multi class from wizard 5/1 to level 6, will i get the arcane tradition feature given ine lv6. in wizard class still. and how about in the other class will i get their arcane tradition. if i get it is it based on overall character level then or levels in the other class? i couldnt find answer from the rules.
Multi-classing is beyond the scope of this channel, so I recommend heading over to #character-discussion!
Is this the right place?
For...?
Learning about dnd
Yes.
Then yep, we can certainly help out!
I'd recommend checking out the above resources and remember that you don't have to read everything before playing. Just enough to get an idea of how things work and how to make a character (which you can do for practice while finding a game).
And of course, ask questions here if stuck.
Where would I ask someone to review a character sheet to make sure it looks alright?
Whats the best fighter subclass? For a polearm fighter
Head on over to #character-discussion!
So they have tabletop gaming at the convention I’m going to this weekend, honestly don’t know if I’d like doing a game at a convention
I feel like there’s too many distractions
I'm new to Dnd and I'm not sure how to get everything started, I know how to create a character sheet but my main concern if both finding at least one more person for a short campaign to help me understand things more and how being a DM works because I'm probably going to end up being one in my friend group.
not sure where to ask this, I am returning to D&D after a 10 year break and find Aarakocra as playable race BUT in all the old books they have wings with hand and not separate "arms" like an Owlin. My Question: do player character Aarakocra have arms and wings?
They do in 5e yep! Some things change, and in this case I think it was believed it would make Aarakocra more playable (and easier to rule mechanically) if they can use their arms fully.
awesome thank you very much
We do have #dm-discussion where you can always ask for tips on DMing. As for getting friends together to play, that can be more of a challenge and might take time. Some tips I'd give is start with a oneshot that ends with a possibility of continuing- something people don't have to commit to for months, but just a quick taster of the game. Make a set date to play it, and really try to keep people to that date.
If they get hooked and want to find out what happens next, congrats, you've got the start of your new group who is going to play with you every week forever . And you keep using this technique to trap introduce even more friends into D&D!

Any advice on character building for a rogue??
You'll want to set Dexterity as your highest ability score, followed by constitution and your choice of Intelligence or Wisdom. The others can be generally as low as you like
if i were to choose artificer as my class, could i build a mech?
No. You can build a homunculus or a steel defender.
T-T

You might be interested in the Armorer subclass, which gives you something more like an Iron Man suit.
Or the Battle Smith subclass, which gives you a Medium-sized construct to control.
Yep what spamandtuna said, beat me to it.
And any artificer could take the Homunculus Servant infusion, which gives you a Tiny drone.
could i create something i could ride on?
As a good rule of thumb, it's recommended to read what a class mechanically does.
From there see if there is a mechanical way to do what an idea would do mechanically and just reflavor it to suit the aesthetic.
If you were Small, you could potentially ride that Medium steel defender.
You could discuss it with your DM if that’s something you’re interested in.
For context, to reflavor something is to keep the mechanics but change the presentation.
Sure, there are a few 'Enchantment' spells in the game that can do things like this
Calm Emotions is probably the most obvious, but even the Suggestion spell could encourage a creature to act with a certain emotion
If you were to scroll through this list of Enchantment spells, I'm sure you could find a few others
I'll check those out. I have a shapeshifting goldfish who changes into different monsters depending on his mood and i want to weaponize him haha
If you'd like help with it, I'd be interested in suggesting certain spells to elicit different emotions
If not, best of luck with it, sounds like a lot of fun
I'd love the help, it's always gonna be needed with me loll
Dose eney one have a Campania I can join
#looking-for-players in here
/look-for-players
well, if you run into any trouble with finding a spell to elicit a certain emotion from the fish, feel free to ping me
Alright sounds good thank you, my last question is that the fish changes emotions instantly and one of those is pain? so when he gets hurt he changes depending on how much pain. I don't know how to act around that.
I'm hoping he will just homebrew something lol because it makes no sense
I don't know yet, I'm supposed to figure it out as I go but all I know is that (probably) the amount of pain he takes is what he will turn into
Yeah I'd set that up as a fixed thing so it's not going all over the place like
1-2 hit points is one form
3-4 is another
Depending on how much hp it has
I wish I could put a mark on that too lol because right now he's practically a dire hawk. I think what you suggest is how it goes but he's never been in a fight yet so I do not know
sounds like your DM has some idea for how it will work and hasn't told you yet
That too
It's definitely that I gotta find out with trial n error
I do, I have a whole sheet dedicated to it
Good good
I have a kenku that I've been playing, sorta legacy style, and I have a whole Google sheet for it's phrases
But I'm no longer playing in the campaign I made him in. So I'm looking to transfer him into a different one, since he's still level one
He's a lovely ball of trauma and chaos
Do you have a concept for your character?
Are you going to tell us the character concept? 😅
oh yeah lol
for the paladin its like he was an evil guy who took an evil oath but he realized it was evil so he broke it, hes an oathbreaker, for the sorcerer it would be like a necromancer tried to kill me but it didnt work and left some necromantic energy in my half dead body so its a shadow magic sorcerer, warlock is the genie one and hes kinda just a guy
i know its pretty complex and hard to understand but my genius knows no bounds
If you go with the first one, I think Redemption Pally would be a better fit, but dont let me tell you what to play
Between all three, I like the sorcerer one the most. Revenge plots are fun and it gives the DM a fun NPC to play with
thats so true!!
bro
you cannot do this me
oopsy poopsy!!! sorrryy no naughty words allowed!!! my bad!!!
cancel culture strikes again!!!!
im jk
bro
@tribal arrow where did you go buddy??
Is there a website that with all the enemy states for dnd
Dndbeyond has all of the monster stat blocks from the books, including the free to access ones that are in the SRD, along with handy filters to help you search.
if you're dual wielding swords as a rogue, can you use one attack on an enemy, move and then use the other attack on another enemy permitting it's within range or do both attacks to need to be rolled for the first target
and critical hits i.e nat 20s on an attack roll doubles the dice damage afaik, does this also double for effects say fire from a flaming sword or sneak attack rolls
just a few things myself and my roomate have been trying to figure out as we delve into dungeons etc
Yup, you can totally move between attacks and hit different targets if you want to. Do keep in mind that two-weapon fighting requires the weapons to be light, so not all swords qualify (unless you have the Dual Wielder feat)
For your first question, you can choose a different target for your second attack as long as you have the ability to attack them (i.e. within range limits, attack limits, etc)
sweet
For your second, yes all die are doubled unless stated otherwise
thanks 😄
(I.e. the die added by Barbarian’s brutal critical or the Half-Orc’s racial ability are not doubled)
All dice that are part of the attack are doubled, yes. If there's additional damage behind a saving throw, like poison damage behind a constitution saving throw, that is not doubled.

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
Then really it's finding a game.

What you trying to make?
Not tryna sound stupid, what is a homebrew?
Not a stupid question! It refers to rules/mechanics/etc. that people make outside of the official books. ✌️
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Hi! My friends and I are going to play our first game of D&D soon, and I just wondering.
What are the best ways to ambience the room and create an immersive game?
Thanks 👍
what language do i choose?
Whichever language you feel like your character would know! It's best to ask your DM what would be appropriate.
i don't have a dungeon master rn
Then I think it's best to choose whichever sounds coolest to you, thats what I did
You can always edit your character sheet later if it doesn't work out
yay you can
what is the difference between a paladin and a warrior
Paladins are half casters, fighters are purely melee combat unless you choose certain subclasses
A 'warrior' isn't a class. Maybe you mean Fighter?
A Fighter is any sort of combatant who focuses on mastering weapons in battle, both with close range and long range options.
A Paladin is a holy knight who focuses on close range combat with a little bit of magic on the side to increase their damage and survivability
Read (carefully) the information and instructions in #find-a-game
It has useful info on finding a game and important instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/.game to join (or to advertise a D&D game you're running).
From a GM standpoint, if you're having to come up with your own descriptions, make sure you hit more than one sense. Uncertainty about room dimensions adds verisimiltude. There's a wealth of music available, both movie and otherwise if you look around. Some people like it; some folks feel like music (especially movie soundtrack music) pulls them out of the game and into that setting.
hello! anyone looking for another player for their campaign? I'm up 🎮
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
When you pick a ranger archetype, do you have to level it up from level 3, or do you immediately have all the abilities at level 3?
You have whatever is granted at that level, but if there's a higher level feature in that archetype you want then you'll need to get to that level.
A 3rd-level ranger has the 3rd-level features from its subclass.
Does jack of all trades count as proficiency? I read somewhere that I would need proficiency in arcana to make a scroll, but only have jack
Grab the Skilled feat, but I think bards can pick out extra proficiencies as well.
Depends on the bard college, IIRC.
Yeah, true. They do get a choice of three on creation, tho.
I think Lore also comes with some. That was actually the one I was thinking of.
#ddb-support is a great place to get technical support with DnDBeyond
oh alr

Are we not allowed custom character creation?
thanks
How do you mean?
Making your own character is like half the fun of the game for lot of people!
So it is allowed, alright!
It’s allowed so much as what your dm allows. Some say “book x y and z only” while others may say “yeah you can use whatever homebrew you want”.
Okay, I can write anything and I want?
Ultimately whatever you write will be subject to your DM’s approval.
Yup! Getting anything you want accepted by the dm is a different question tho.
It’s a collaborative game. Finding a group that matches your style is important so you get what you want out of the game.
But as long as you’ve followed the rules for character creation (including any additional guidelines from the DM themself), then it should usually be fine.
Danke
If you have any concerns over whether something will be permitted, you can always ask the DM directly.
Yeah we don’t allow animated gifs/memes on the server - see server rules.
Can someone walk me through making a human barbarian I have only played tiefling rogue my boyfriend made for me and I can’t understand any of the tutorials
Have you watched the Handbooker Helper tutorial videos? Here's the one for barbarians:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRUuhZxWxEk
I have but I don’t understand stat rolls or saving throw calculations
I’m not good with that kind of stuff
Did you watch the previous videos?
Here's the one on ability scores:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoV5iM7peOg
saving throw bonuses are just the relevant stat + your PB if proficient
rolling stats is 4d6, drop the lowest. you do it 6 times to get 6 numbers and choose how to assign those numbers
?tag new abilities
See, Cat, my assumption was that Leketse meant they didn't understand how to calculate the stat modifier.
Each class has two ability scores they are proficient in for saving throws. Barbarians add their Proficiency Bonus to their Strength and Constitution saving throws.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClassFeatures
(i.e., the "what do I add to my roll" thing.)
if so the bot post will explain that to them
Aghhh my brain hurts
what parts are you confused about?
The "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series are aimed at new players. You can watch them at your own pace.
Everything 🥲🥲🥲 I’m so bad at making characters but my DM is currently doing a campaign I’m using my tiefling rogue as a stand in until I make my barbarian so I can’t ask him to help me
My brain just doesn’t compute character creations
Start from the beginning and don't worry about being a barbarian for now.
I’m already using my tiefling in about 4 campaigns since I don’t know how to make a new character I only want to be a barbarian since I already have the mini painted lolol
Breathe. You can do this.
Don't worry about the barbarian class for now if you don't even understand ability scores.
Read the first chapter of the free Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Alright, try going through the step-by-step guide in the basic rules.
Step 1. Pick a race
Step 2. Pick a class
Step 3. Determine ability scores
Step 4. Describe your character
I recommend you use either Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or Point Buy to determine your ability scores for now.
Ok
Keep in mind the primary ability scores for barbarians, which is Strength and secondarily Constitution and Dexterity (the latter two gives them modifier bonuses to their Unarmoured Defense AC).
Using the Standard Array I would recommend 15 Str, 13 Dex, 14 Con, 8 Int, 12 Wis, and 10 Cha. (This is before applying the racial ability score bonuses)
Okay
Are you manually filling out a pdf sheet?
If so, I recommend you just start filling out some boxes
Starting with the ability scores
Once you start it’ll look way less overwhelming
Can anyone help me play?
Well we can point you to some helpful resources to help you start learning (most of us don't have the time and bandwidth to teach folks D&D one on one)
^ Check these resources out - if you have specific questions about something, feel free to ask here or in an aproppriate channel (see #channel-guide to see the many channels we have for specific D&D topics)
I did
Nice! Have you had a chance to try and make a character sheet yet?
Na
I would take the first chapter of the free basic rules and try building a character sheet following it.
DnDBeyond also has a character sheet tools that can help - they have a guided path for new to D&D folks
?
Great! Hope it goes well and you have fun!
How do you make a character sheet again?
You can either use the printable/ edittable character sheets from WotC such as this fillable form version or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Or use what ever sheet and app best suits your game. For example, if you join a game that is hosted on roll20, you would use roll20's character sheets as part of their Virtual Table Top platform.
For making a character as practice before finding a game, dndbeyond or filling out a sheet yourself is your best bet. Dndbeyond can walk you through some steps and fill in some things for you, but you can also learn a lot filling out a sheet manually.
?
Are you confused by anything I said, or that you cannot post gifs?
The first one
What part did you find confusing?
What he said
What specific part of what he said? There are about 4 different statements there.
If referring to me, then *she. Remember you can check people's profiles to see what pronoun roles they have if any, and if in doubt you can use neutral 'they' or just ask!
But right, what part did I lose you at?
I'm sorry, Elgate - I cued off of previous useage (by somebody else). My apologies.
How to make the thing. And my bad for using wrong pronouns.
Have you followed any of the links I posted? The highlighted blue words have links attached.
OK, so back to the beginning: Have you looked at either the intro in the bot post or at chapter 1 of the basic rules (also in the bot post)
Oh, my bad. You mean how to make a character in general, and not where to get the sheets?
Ye
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

OK, Elgate tagged the new bot post again. Go to one of the first two links - either the introductory demo (which will give you a feel for how the game is played) or chapter 1 of the basic rules (that outlines the basic steps to creating a new character)
I did it
OK. Now, are there parts of making a character that still do not make sense?
Kinda
OK. Which ones?
Hey, could anyone help me?
What does <C> and [R] next to my spell mean?
Concentration and Ritual
a ritual spell can be cast as a ritual if your class allows you to, which makes it take 10 minutes extra to cast but it won't consume a spell slot
A concentration spell requires you to concentrate on it to maintain the effect, and you can only concentrate on one spell at a time
in addition, taking damage can cause you to lose concentration
hey, just started Dnd really. I have one game experience, my friend and I are horrible though. Any tips?
Thanks!
Might help to try and unpack where you felt things went wrong in your game? Also, how many players do you have in your game? If one DM and one player, then the game does tend to need some adjusting to work for that dynamic (It's usually deisgned to work for 1 DM and 4 players).
Well. It was not bad...we are just horrible at DnD. We are just mad dumb lol As for the Dm and 4 players. It is just him and I currently. I was hoping to find a game with some people to where we can learn.
It's your first time playing so don't be hard on yourself. As long as you're having fun that's all that really matters (noone else was there to judge you).
I would describe my entire party that I run for as "mad dumb", yet we're having a blast each session 😎
This is great to know we're all mentally in the danger zone. lol
You can try using the instructions in #find-a-game if wanting to look for other players or games to join.
If wanting to continue with your friend, you can try using the Sidekick rules (Either from Tasha's Cauldron fo Everything, or even the older UA (playtest) version- recommend the official version from the book however) where the player's character has 2-3 companions with them to help balance their party to be more like a 4 player party.
And it's perfectly fine to mess up rules and learn through trial and error with D&D. One of the big tips is that you don't have to memorise the rules, and can play intuitively- but when something feels 'off' or like it's not working, try seeing if there is a rule for the situation in game, and if there is then you can try using that rule from there on out and seeing if that makes things feel smoother.
Ok! Thank you for that very helpful advice. I was worried it'd be a heavy rule based game in this. So knowing we can be dumb is great. Thanks again.
Yeah dw you can be very dumb in dnd (even as a DM, I’m a player rn but my DM last session tried to massively overcharge us for milk which lead to a 2 hour disagreement and a bit of gasliting over milk)
The rules are there to try and help things run smoothly and balanced, but you'll often find each table has houserules or rules they ignore at their own preference. One table ettiquette rule we have a my table is if the DM is doing something that seems to break a rule, it's perfectly fine to remind them of a rule, but the DM can either go 'Huh. We'll look that up and discuss that later after session and see how we feel on that, but for now, I'm going to rule this' or just say 'Oh I know, but I'm ignoring it in this situation for reasons'.
And when looking up the rule later you might go 'oooh right. Yeah that makes more sense, we'll do that from now on' or maybe go 'Hm. That doesn't click with me, and I prefer how we're doing it, but I might change this part...'
Yall sound like us. I swear. The first game we played we would steal things from the enemies. Like teeth or fingers and keep em like dirty goblins. Our Dm was surprised every time. lol
Lmaoo said DM when they were a player for my campaign was a bard but he didn’t pick any spells because he didn’t know he needed spells 😭
But yeah our games sound pretty similar!!
Now that may be me right there. I blank out like that all the time. 😆 Well if yall ever got 2 spots open for a game, and you want two more morons lmk!
Yeah it wasn’t just blanking which made it more funny this was like 4 sessions of me reminding them that they needed spells (literally they just had can dance, can sing in their attributes 😭)
Also maybe in the future! My group is irl so could be a little tricky lol
Lol Thats hilarious. I'd be laughing so hard if that was a regular occurace.
Yeah, that may prove to be a problem.😆
Combats were certainly interesting lmaoo
Btw mind if I send you a friend request? I feel like we’re slightly off topic but I want to continue this conversation/nf
Yeah, sure go right ahead!
Thank you!
help i new i created a charecter but have no dnd freinds:(

If you’ve got any specific questions, though, fire away!
Hey I understand the basics. I have watched many videos and the more I watch the more I get confused. Is there any way someone can help me?
What parts do you need help with?
If you could summarize your confusion into a few thoughts or topics, what would you say is your biggest stumbling block beyond basic rules? Maybe that will help narrow it down.
I understand the following; dungeon master creates a game path for us to follow players create characters (Confusion 1 - Character Creation) Player plays game player levels up (Confusion 2 - How Character level up works) Game over (Confusion 3 - If I go to a different dungeon masters game how does my character work exactly).
For 1) did you have a character in mind yet?
A worlock
I thought worlock was the class
Sorry. I meant race. 😅
Are there more than 1?
You passed the first test… 👀
I don’t have a clue how to name my character is it supposed to be basic or more unique?
Quick q: how do you know if a roll is a crit and what is a roll with advantage or initiative
Chapter 2 in the Basic Rules has a few different races to choose from.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races
There’s tons more in other books, too.
I thought worlock was worlock, I’m sorry if I’m bad its the reason I joined and wanted to ask, videos as amazing as they are, it leaves me with many q’s than a’s (questions than answers)
I usually just use a random name generator online.
- Characters start at a level determined by the DM. 2) DM determines when characters level up. Either by XP, milestone, or discretion. 3) Different DM, different game, character, story, everything.
Crits happen when the die is a natural 20 for an attack roll.
When you roll with advantage, you roll two d20’s instead of the normal one, and use whichever number is higher.
And initiative is a Dexterity check used to determine the order in which you take your turn.
Thanks guys I get it now!
Can I have reliable skill for it
It's whatever you want it to be! Creative, silly, serious, generic.. you are making a person! You could think of questions like, "what would their parents have named them" or "do they have a nickname they go by?" "Did they come up with their name themselves?" It's totally up to you.
Improving your Dexterity score is the most common way to improve your initiative rolls.
Adding your proficiency bonus to it is pretty rare.
If it helps you out https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/ can be a great source of inspiration
Is monk a good class to play as just starting out or are there any that are better for newcomers
Monk is great if it sparks your interest. I know a lot of folks will recommend Barbarian as it can be "simpler" in some ways (moreso over casters).. or Champion Fighter..
but having played several kinds of monks, I have enjoyed them all
Question!! How do I know what dice to use for different scenarios? I’ve pretty much figured everything out but how the different dice do! Any tips or advice would help!
Just roll whatever the DM says 😉
typically it will describe what dice you use for items and spells.
but if you're unsure, this is always a good fallback
Just have all of them when you go and you’ll be fine 😁
Thank you all!! I appreciate it!!!!!
Mostly you’ll be rolling a d20. It’s used for ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws — any time you want to determine whether your actions succeed or fail.
The rest are used primarily for damage. Whatever you’re using to cause the damage will say what to roll.
sometimes (rarely) a percentile die will be used. Which is a D100
which is typically two D10s representing the two digits

If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Hello! I apologize if this is the wrong channel. I am fairly new to dnd, and I am trying to dm for a group. I am having some trouble filling out the stats. Can anyone help?
What do you mean by stats? Do you mean the ability scores of your players’ characters?
Yeah

- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Well, I have Strength - Charisma stats, but I have no idea where I get the saving throws from.
Saving throws are equal to the relevant stat modifier + proficiency bonus, if the PC in question is proficient in that saving throw
Each class table tells you what saving throws that class is proficient in
ahh ok, and then I would where would I get inspiration and passive wisedom? The race or class?
Inspiration is given out by the DM as a reward, usually for good RP, planning, doing something cool in combat, etc
By passive wisdom I assume you mean passive perception, which is equal to 10 + that player’s perception skill bonus
Ahhhh ok I see
This definitely helps a lot! I'll keep working on this and hopefully I won't have anymore questions lol
Thanks for the help! 🙂
Pegasus, i find the character creation options on D&D beyond really automate this stuff.
ooo
Yeah D&DBeyond does 97% of the work for you in terms of character creation
oh cool! ok ill check it out
No one is accepting me charactor T~T
When did you apply?
Few mins ago in about four threads in #looking-for-players
It may take you days to weeks to find a game.
They say my charactor is too complicated T~T
Define complicated
Depending on the approach taken the results will vary as well.
My character is a warlock and a rogue, who was first a warlock but then he fell in love with a goddess thus taking on Shadow Queen, his love, as his patron who barely has any combat skills other than deception, illusion, and mind control so he then became a rogue.
Do you already have the character made on dnd beyond on something similar?
If you're applying to an one-shot that much detail would be rather moot.
Yes
It's fun

DMs may be afraid of main character syndrome. Maybe try something simple?
uhm, but he is barely strong?
What level is the character?
Not necessarily about strong. Might be coming across as too much flavor for a 1 shot.
Some campaigns often start at level 1, 3, or 5 depending on the experience and preference of the table.
A good backstory for a one shot is “my guy swings sword”
annyone have a game?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
yes
Then check #find-a-game
20?
I can reduce it, I just raised level to check out stuff
Is that what the DM said the PCs will play at?
Plus it's often best to build a character that's based on the setting, theme, and tone of the campaign to ensure compatibilty.
Best to start super super super simple. Find your story by playing, not when rolling up your character.
That’s what the game is for. To discover who your character really is.
My guy swing sword
so im new to all this how does it work

so do i have to make a player on my own or for each game i play? and once i do how do i find a game
The resources in the bot post above, such as the first four chapters of the basic rules cover character creation.
Dnd beyond also has a character creation that can walk you through it.
If you're more of a visual learner check out the handbooker helper series.
Overall check out all the resources in the bot post above.
Generally you’d make a new character when your old one dies or if you joined a new campaign with a different group.
As for making a character before joining a group, it’s better to have a semi-robust idea of what you want to play over a rigid in-depth concept. You’d generally refine & make final edits your character with the help of the DM to ensure they fit within the tone, setting, and playstyle of the game
Hi, i'm relatively new to dnd and was wondering how the best way to approach the game and finding people would be?
I've done two one shots so far through a friend as a DM (using dnd beyond for character sheets and roll20 for combat) and I'm looking to join other communities/ people to play with since i'm beginning to like the game quite a bit, but i'm still v much so a beginner, thus I'm curious as to how i could find beginner friendly groups and how to know what i should be looking for when doing so (and any etiquettes i should keep in mind or know about since playing in a stablished friend group w newer players is bound to be different than when playing with new ppl who already have an idea of how dnd is supposed to go)
and side note, although not too important, any help in regards to how character building goes would be appreciated too although with enough research i'll learn about this eventually i think.
The way i've played thus far as by having a friend hand hold me through char creation and use a character they tried to make for me (mechanically, at least. I gave it my own personality and lore after looking through a bit of what they have so I am more familiar with RP than combat since the one shots have been RP heavy), so any help as to how i could learn more combat and character building would be appreciated too!
Hello how long does it take to find a party
I'm very excited to start playing
ok I go sleep then
luck?
uh yes I did
The cap for ability scores is 20 unless you have very rare magic items.
I don't know how it happened, maybe refreshing and making a new link of the pdf might work
Well hello, I just joined the server, fairly new to DnD and have been playing a campaign with multiple one shots already, which was my first campaign.. have been having a lot of fun actually and i wanted to see if i can play it more. I am looking to join another campaing if I can and make some great friends along the way!!
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
The above channel helps instruct on using the looking-for-X channels here- be sure to read carefully on how to use the bot command to post to a channel, and fill out the form. Or just look through the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channel and respond in the threads of any game and groups that seems interesting to you!

It was an error of a kind old man
hi guys
I'm gearing up to start DMing next year, I'm having a hard time finding a bundle that would unlock all playable races on DnD Beyond for me and my group
You can got to each book and just buy the races you want for 1.99 each
where is the option to buy races please?
Go to the webpage market place click on the book you want IE https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse scroll down and you can get 33 races for $10
I have a small group over xbox that we play dnd and the next guy HATES anime characters with a passion anyone mind helping me make the most cringe homebrew class or know of one already
Use every single trope of OTT anime character
I get the concept of it but idk what I should set the dice rolls to, etc.
i have the perfect idea actually! you know Demon Slayer?
Yeah
(im terrible with names) combine pig boy + the guy who gets super UwU around girls into the same character
You prob want #homebrew
ssup
@fresh fable https://www.dndbeyond.com/races Is the only way to buy races to purchase them from within whatever book they're contained in?
and what does (Legacy) mean?
hey dude how u doin?
Did you follow the link I sent? Legacy is old race rules no longer available to purchase iirc
Yes I did follow the link you sent & I appreciate it, but scrolling through races there's a lot that aren't included in that bundle
I feel confused because I check races page and it's showing a bunch more races, but when I find that book in the store correlating to it, the races aren't there
the indidual races are listed if you scroll down on the book's store page
thanks! a bit late but still grateful 😄
Hey. Not played a proper campaign before but looking to try it out.
This the right place to ask about available games?
I would ask in #looking-for-players
👌
Is this a good channel for some backstory feedback? I'm going to play my first for real DnD campaign (I only did one shots so far) and I wanted to see if my backstory is okay to use but I wanted some tips first. xD
thank you 💕
Simple backstories are where did you come from, how did you get your skills/powers, why are you out in the world
What is a stealth check and what modifier do you use
Dex and it’s your ability to hide, usually it’s against someone’s passive perception score
For example if you were trying to hide from a goblin and they had a passive perception of 14 and you rolled 15 or higher they wouldn’t see you
Heyy what's a good way to get into dnd, just been curious and wanted to try it out
I just read through the monster manual and saw that some creatures have like An average damage of 13 like An ogre i played as a Rogue before and had like 10 hit points An ogre could kill me in one hit let alone stand a dragon is that normal or am I playing wrong
You prob won’t be fighting an ogre at lvl1
If you have any friends that might be interested in playing that's how I started you can also look at your local game store they sometimes have dnd nights you just watch a tutorial and your off and if not dnd is just not for you but you might like other TTRPG
Or you can play online
I geuss that our DM hates us😂

Yoyo! I've been a part of a few campaigns before, but I really wanted to engage with the DND community to learn how to play, but also how to create my own campaigns for friends, as my knowledge of all this stuff isn't very great 😭 . Glad to have joined/to meet some awesome people here!
Welcome! We have some good resources linked in the pinned messages. Also don't forget to take a look at #channel-guide - we have a lot of channels for specific D&D topics such as #dm-discussion where you can chat with other DMs about how they run their games.
awesome! tysm

Ty..
If im gonna use a book for a campaign should I read it exactly how it says in the book?
That's entirely up to you.
Boxed text—the parts intended to be read aloud to the party—even says as much:
At various places, the adventure presents descriptive text that’s meant to be read or paraphrased aloud to players. This read-aloud text is offset in boxes. Boxed text is most commonly used to describe rooms or present bits of scripted dialogue.
I tend to mix it up when I'm running; sometimes I read it as is, other times I embellish. If I never stretch my improv muscles, they won't develop. But sometimes it's worth reading it straight so you don't overlook something.
Trying to get into dnd is hard
I believe it also depends on how good a storyteller one can be and has some improv experience gathered, like you said its probably nice to start from books to keep good reference for total beginners and then add your own flavor here and there once in a while till you start doing it more often.
Btw, can someone help me understand what leaving an application is and how i can do it if i like a game i see in "#looking for players", and would want the DM to know of my interest? I have only replied to the thread as of now.
That's a perfectly fine way to do it - find a game that sounds interesting and respond in the thread or direct message the poster.
If you want to advertise that you are looking for a DM, read the info and instructions in #find-a-game
Then use the bot commands (/looking-for dm) and the bot will give you a form to fill out.
Thank you so much !! 🙂
Once submitted, the bot will create the post in taht #750812887697588356 channel and attach a thread to it. Use the thread for any corrections or additional info or communicating with folks.
As a reminder, per server rules, do not share personally identifying information such as exact age. Saying you're 18+ is fine though.
These are all very helpful tips! thanks again!
I got one more tip - D&D can take time to find the right group and trying to align schedules can break a game/group or even campaign. So be patient!
Im new to dnd
