https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Alignment tells you a bit more about the different alignment combinations.. as folks have said, it helps lay a foundation for how your character acts or views things
Anyways ima watch some dnd videos
Or guides
(or I'm just gonna end up watching another blood on the clocktower video 😔)
people shouldn't yell - helping with newer questions is a big purpose of this channel. That said, there is an expectation that people read the basic rules, watch intro videos.. start to get a grasp and then come and ask clarifying questions here.
Folks are happy to help you further understand stuff, or explain it in another way that might be more clear to you.. but they typically don't want to have to handhold someone through the whole book.
Videos like Handbooker Helper are very informative

Hi everyone, i got the books, tried running some one shorts and watched countless hours of youtube videos i still feel lik ei have no idea whats going on so hopefully find some nice people around 🙂
We are here. Is there a concept or rule you found puzzling? Generally we can help more when we have a place to start
The Handbooker Helper tutorial videos are a great help to beginners.
thanks ill have a look ive looked at countless tutorials and all v confuysion as people seem to almost have their own way of doing things so hope im in right place now thanks for replying .
Spell casting and travelling have puzzled me somewhat. any advice or if you could point me in the right direction id greatly appreciate it.
Chapter 10: Spellcasting
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting
What specifically don't you understand?
Don't worry about overland travel at the moment.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Speed
Prepared spells. I was trying to do a one shot with my daughter (shes 8 and loving dnd) and i have no idea how it worked. or how Spell points(mana?) worked into or how often a certtain spell could be used. apologies if this seems obvious maybe i just need a slap in the head 🙂
Don't bother with spell points (that's optional rule) for now which will just confuse you even more.
Here's the Handbooker Helper tutorial video on Spellcasting Basics:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9ZnlZ7VudM&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=9
I'm confused by the rules for AC. According to the rules, if the d20's number plus the modifiers is more or the same as the armor class, the attack hits. how does this work when it's higher than the highest possible total? does it only hit when you roll a nat 20?
Yep! If you can't normally hit an AC (Let's say they have 25 AC and you only have a +4 to hit) then you can only hit when you roll a nat 20 (Which is an auto hit and normally doubles damage dice unless they are immune to critical hits)
Not really a newcomer here, I've played about 5 campaigns, and am interested in DM'ing a campaign, how do I go about writing one, and what are some tips that I should follow? Is most of the sessions improv? And what do I do when my players stray from the story?
I'd assume make a base story then make alternatives to major decisions
#dm-discussion is a great channel for those sorts of questions.
And much of this can depend on your own personal DMing style and how much prep you prefer doing.
Am I allowed to multi class? I merged Barbarian for Rage and Monk for Fist fighting
You have to ask your DM.
Got it
If your DM allows it, and your character meets the minimum ability scores for the combination. If you're just doing the character for practice, sure.
DMs will often start new players at level 1 so there's no multiclassing at that point.
Until you have a DM just practice with character creation or at least a level 1 character.
I have my DM at school usually starts us at level 5 and allows multi class
I'm lost with the instructions for looking for a game
Where do I type this?
Nvm I understood it now

Making my first charecter
Hey there!
I'm new here.
I've played one amateur 1hr campaign with my DDB half elf character.
I'm looking for something a bit longer.
Check the Looking For Games channels to find a group/game to join.
See #find-a-game for more info
much appreciated, thank you!
I'll try to do that tmrw, thanks!
Can you do roll20 on phone?
Kind of, I believe there is a roll20 app. #third-party May have answers for you.
Thank you
The app is just for character sheets.
Roll20 maps on a phone is… not something I’d recommend. 😅
In my experience, Owlbear Rodeo works a lot better on phones.
https://www.owlbear.rodeo/
I like to come up with lots of ideas for new characters, but I’ve actually never played dnd at all. In here do people find dm’s and players that are consistent? I want to try playing but I don’t know anyone for dnd
Go on Reddit and use their lfg page. It’s easier to find players if you make an ad yourself. You’ll never know how a player or dm is until you talk to them for a bit, they’re all a lil different.
🫡
Check #find-a-game
Oh wow that’s convenient
hey is anyone here familiar with how foundry's character creation works? I don't understand what the resources are
what even is that lol
I just had my first D&D session today. Kinda anxiety-inducing and I'm sure I didn't do the best job, but at least it was a first step
Hi I'm really new to DND how do I get started & learn the basics? And could I do this without handbooks?
Hi. Im new to DnD I was thinking about getting into it since highschool but i never got around to it til now
I would start by reading the basic rules, it gives you the necessities to play D&D or check out Matthew Mercers handbook helpers
If you had fun during your game then you did great
I would also start by reading the basic rules and see if you’re interested. You can use #find-a-game to find a game to play in
The basic rules are free and give you enough to be able to play D&D, if you don’t want to read then you might be able to check out Mathew Mercers Handbook helpers
It’s a YouTube video I believe
okay thank you!

The stuff there
What command is that? I see people doing it but I’m not sure how to do it
? New (without the space)
Oh thanks
Where should I go to join if I’m brand new
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Guys what races can I use if I want to use magic?
All. There are no class restrictions for races.
If by magic you mean spellcasting, that will primarily come from your class, not your race.
Though there are a few races that can natively cast a couple low-level spells.
High elf and tiefling, from the Basic Rules.
Several more in other books.
To all you new players , I Have a message for you , you can't be "bad" at dnd and getting bad rolls is part of the game, your not trying to "win" the game, it's better to think if dnd as a playable experience.more then a game, more emphasis on the story/world than trying to "win"
I'm saying this as a dm who is currently trying to handle a player who is stuck in the mindset of " they call it a game so I want to win!"
Yes everyone LOVES getting good rolls and a nat 20 should always be celebrated , but that doesent mean that bad rolls can't be hilarious and enjoyable for everyone as well , sometimes even as a dm you just roll bad that's what makes dnd fun...as a dm I can play a literal ancient dragon with 400 hitpoints....and STILL have the dice humble me with a nat1 xD "welp....the dragons fire breath gets blown back in his face by the wind...."
Can you guys tell me what's the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer
A wizard studies magic. A sorcerer is magic.
@karmic heath one Is a magical trust fund baby
The other is a giant nerd with thousands of notes
🤣
Well let's say that I want a class that entirely on magic power what should I choose
((I want to control water and its sub elements))
Wizards have the broadest selection of spells in the game, and can learn more as they find spells in-game.
Sorcerers know fewer spells, but they can manipulate those spells in ways that others can’t.
Either would give you access to spells for water, ice, etc.
So what should I choose
I'm sorry if I'm bothering you
And is there blood bending
@karmic heath "bending " isn't a thing in dnd unless specifically stated by a dm
Storm sorcerer is probably the most inherently watery of the official sorcerer/wizard option.
But I suggest looking at various spell lists for the classes, also focusing on specific elemental things is more a subclass option than class
Subclasses get to more "specific" themes
If your trying to go the "bending" route tho I'd suggest monk
There's a few monk subclasses that can go for a "bender" feel
4 elements monk can essentially cast spells as a martial arts move
Ok thanks for the help you guys are really great😁
I think I will choose wizard class and learn water spells and things like that
Sun soul monks are basically saiyans and can throw energy blasts
@karmic heath I literally made a broly character that I've yet to find a dm that will let me run it cause.of.how.broken it is...and I use 0 homebrew for.it xD
55 feet of movement per turn, 4 ranged energy blast attacks and rage damage bonus on those, and being resistant to physical damage because barbarian multiclass
Can I add like two classes to a character?
Like can I make it a sorcerer and a wizard at the same time
@karmic heath that's literally multiclassing
@karmic heath here dm me so.i can explain and not bog down this chat
Ok
I have a question regarding races?
Can I only choose between the 9 main races in normal games or can I use any of them (Like a Simic Hybrid or Plasmoid)?
We highly recommend new players don't jump into multiclassing but rather learn one class.
That is up to the individual DM one which playable races are allowed in their campaign setting.
cool
@idle yacht ask your dm

what i need to start playing? only cubes?
you need the basic rules (free online), fill out a character sheet (paper or digital) dice (physical or digital) and a group to play with.
thanks 🙂
when using digital dice, you need to check with your DM. they might want to see your rolls. There are ways to accomplish that though, depending on where you roll

Thing I wanted to ask when it comes to equipment:
Let’s say I decided to pick the items given in Players’ handbook for my class (Example: Wizard) - scholars’ pack, quarterstaff, spellbook, etc.
Do I roll the 4d4 (each being 10gp) to get the summary coin count, then subtract the cost of equipment, and add the remaining coins to equipment on the character spreadsheet, or do I forfeit the calculations when picking the basic equipment listed in Players’ handbook?
You either choose with starting gold to custom buy your gear or start with the much simpler starting equipment list.
I recommend the latter.
Any gp/sp/co left for measly buys in the latter? Let’s say, for a cup of ale, or a candle.
Can’t seem to find that in PH.
Under "Food, Drink, and Lodging"
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/equipment#FoodDrinkandLodging
Candles? One copper apiece!

Hi
Do yall do ur matched on DnD beyond?
Lots of people use D&D Beyond, yes. Personally I prefer it for taking a lot of the paperwork out of character creation and management.
So I'm still new to the game, what should I know/do as a barbarian?
I cannot remember my stats, but I'll keep you posted
Learn your character sheet and your character features as best you can. Barbarians are great at getting into melee and raging to reduce damage done to them.
Think The Hulk.

So I have expertise on my Acrobatics skill and a +4 on Proficiency Bonus.
On top of a Skill Bonus of 11.
If I roll a natural 10, I add 11 for my skill Bonus, do I add my proficiency bonus twice?
is your dexterity score +3 ?
because your "skill bonus" already includes your proficiency bonus and your expertise
Yes it is
then you would add 11 to a natural 10 and nothing else
gotcha.
If I roll a natural 1 it still counts as a fail though right?
not on skill checks, no
at least not rules as written
nat 1 and nat 20 only do special things on attack rolls and death saves
is there anything higher than expertise?
there is nothing that lets you add your PB more than once, but things like bardic inspiration, guidance etc can stack on top
A warlock lvl6 has only 2 spell slots- is that right??? Sounds pretty few to me...
yes, but those are of the highest level and come back on a short rest instead of only on a long rest
Your proficieny bonus goes up as you level and so can your dexterity (if you choose to use ability skill increase over feats at certain levels.)
So while it may be +11 to a roll now (which, BTW, is a LOT - depending on what level you are), it may go up even higher as the character levels.
There are limits of course.. like if your dexterity score is at 20 you can't use an ASI to make it higher, but there are some magic items that can push a Stat above 20

Hi, I'm new to DND and have a question about my character build. I'm playing a druid/barbarian. If I use wild shape to transform into a brown bear, how do I work out what my new AC would be with unarmored defence? I think it would be 10 + bear dex modifier (+0) + bear con modifier (+3) to = an AC of 13?
Does the bears natural AC of 11 make any difference?
I believe you would choose one of the two AC calculations
those being your unarmoured defence, or the bear's flat natural AC
Oh, okay so I can just pick the better of the two? Thanks. 🙂

Check the botpost above
where can I find first level adventures? levels 1-5 maybe
Some folks are probably advertising games for those levels in #looking-for-players. Unless you're asking for adventures to run in that span?
adventures to run myself
You can checks the DMsGuild website for prewritten adventures
DMsGuild and DriveThruRPGs have adventures. You can do a filter on levels and costs.
Though I don't believe it's possible to sort by tier
It is!
thank you!
ive played none lol
i have a half assed character and thats it
💀
best way to do it imo
i havent even thought up a background or anything cuz i suck at that
Share what you've got in #character-discussion if you want a hand.
Hi, i want to start and i am creating a character on dndbeyond, but i dont understand the ability scores at all
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
So i can asign them the amount i want?
hi i have no clue how to play dnd is there some sort of guide where i can get started
The bullet points tell you the different ways to get the amounts for each score.
Check out the links in this post #dnd-newcomers message
Playing as the Grung race, can saliva and sweat act as poison for me to throw towards other people?
Talk to your DM. The rules for that race do not say anything about saliva and sweat.
ok
is there a way to join a group that is only beginners? ive played a bit before but i still need some hand holding.
Are you looking for in person or online or both?
doesnt matter
im down for either
I know there is a store called dragons lair about 30 minutes away and I saw a recomendation to post something in store for a game. I havent made the trip over there though
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
Other options
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
I have decades of experience with WoD (Vampire 3ed ed) and some D7D games under my belt, but I have some more advanced questions... 1. are DM NPC's played by helper short term players a thing anymore ? (IE: Only the NPC and DM know that the new character is an NPC for extra intrigue) 2. I am stuck with online only sobs softly do I need to dig out my dice or are digital dice more common for online? I have more but thats a start ^.^
The best recommendation for new player friendly groups would be to visit your local game shop and library for in person events.
For online and in person I recommend Adventures League as it provides flexibility with rebuilding a character to promote experimentation and try out things to see what works best for the person.
- Not that I'm aware of. The standard now is the DM controls the world and the npcs that inhabit it. While the players control only the characters they created.
- If you are playing online, you'll likely be using digital dice on virtual table top or through chat bot like Avrae, which is used in discord.
- Dang playing NPC's was one of my talents 😛 2. oh good, I moved and now I would need to look hard as it has been 10 years of no gaming for me.
Ive seen people join games as guests but they arent really considered npcs that are played by someone else than the DM
because NPC would imply they do follow DM instructions on what do say or do to some extend and that would be pretty unusual
Why am I not seeing sections on sites for bio's? (that was an part of RP in general back in the 4ed age, net privacy?) and .... gerrr, ADHD and autism sorry mind fart
@ornate kiln I did exactly as the DM told me after they handed me a sheet and explained what they needed, so much fun
Its just not very common in modern DnD, but there is nothing inherently preventing it
@ornate kiln I figured, that was most common in the 30 - 60 player LARP I was in, we had a team of DM's I was a player helper and normal player
Out of curiosity how does one request to join a game? I know you go to looking for players section but do message under the DM game request? Or do you message the DM directly?
If there are any instructions in the listing, I'd follow those. Otherwise it seems like either option should be okay
Does anybody have any tips I just got into dnd
Ok thx wasn't sure if I was messaging right

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

oh yeah one of my other questions , I don't want to make a character before joining a game because I like tailoring my char's to the game is that good or bad now ?(it was a good way to play back in the day)
Practice making a character(s). You can always tweak them based on the specifications of the campaign setting.
ugh, I hate that kind of character creation personally, I love asking the group what they need to round out the party and playing that AND the way the character is built (roll, assign ect) can make a big difference in later play ... wiping up a high elf wizard I can't use would be a pain for me and the Tabaxi I want to make is likely hard to fit in games without DM communication
or am I wroung?
I don't see how that'd be wrong. If you prefer to not make plans before you have a party then you do you 👍
Waiting to create your actual game character until you have a group is a great idea since allowed options will vary
But if you're not familiar with 5e character creation, it's also good to practice that in advance
True. Just with practice concepts, or maybe to see how ones have in mind shape up mechanically.
I get the grist of char creation, I played other editions but my previous DM's hated premade chars due to the VERY home brew nature of most games I played, Like I said I have played dragons wyrmling's (copper and 2 bronze) as player characters. I should practice but what method is more common ... assigning points or rolling?
Start with standard array or point buy.
cool, pfft I just had an idea so thank you all ... make a char for each class (throw everything at the wall and hope something sticks lol)
The back story is important if i just want to try dnd?
IMO yes, you can get skills from "background" (thats what I read) and that would count as some back history and having a back story will help your DM (not just D&D but all TTRPG) it can be simple, use a book or movie char you like for inspiration if your short on ideas 🙂
The importance of backstory will vary significantly by group and playstyle as well
I don't think I've ever written more than a page, and have played entire campaigns with characters who had single sentence backstories. But some groups tend to go way more in depth on that.
You'll also want enough of an idea of where your character came from to at least choose the mechanical Background option
Thats one i did
Yeah. These days I mostly do backstory as part of Session Zero, collaborating with other players. And even then, maybe it’s a paragraph.
For intense games where we want to get into the relationships and emotions, we’ll pull out a mini RPG and do our backstories that way.
I'm an advocate of the three sentence backstory: your upbringing, how you became an adventurer, and what your goals are.
Just enough to get started, you can tell the whole table without boring them, and get going.
thats why I noted short, example a halfling bard : Keilly was the son of a bard and had learned the basics but was not content to stay in the shire, he had seen something amazing one day when going out with some other youths in a "test of courage" lighting a ember of adventures spirt in him, now he sets out to find his destiny...
Add more if you like, but have a "business card" version to be able to introduce who you're playing.
3?
3 sentences I assume, since your snippet matches that format (even if it's technically 1 sentence 😁 )
Your reward.
Ok, thx
XD
this is why I make chars on the fly, I have a head library of characters with pages of history, I write short storys to relaxe
Where should i look for a game to try?
I wrote some options here.
Is there any class that can infect enemies with diseases (Not in the sense of Curse or Poisoning, but literally giving cholera, tuberculosis, smallpox, leprosy, etc.)?
If so, is there any race that does well with this ability?
Probably better for #character-discussion I doubt it though
Probably the best you could do is reflavor statuses to be diseases
IM SO EXCITED TO JOIN A GAME TONIGHT
There are no disease-based official classes or player races
There aren't really a lot of rules for diseases at all tbh
Yeah
Is there a better way to build a ranger? I'm going Gloomstalker Ranger multiclassed with Rogue, is there anything better I can do to deal more damage?
oh my bad, sorry
hello?

Regarding Proficiency, does it end up increasing with each level I pass or does it only truly increase every 4 levels?
only every 4 levels.. you can see the progression here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
ok, so instead of being 2 + 2 with each level that passes and changing every 4 levels, the reality is that at the beginning it is 2 and then goes to 3 and so on with every 4 levels that I gained
yup
Previous editions of DnD had the equivalent progress every level, which was changed in 5th edition for the purposes of bounded accuracy, a core design principle
It seems like it makes sense

Little tip for you new players....communication with your DM is EVERYTHING and for thr love of god...if you can't make a session just let them know...so they don't plan a session around introducing your character 0_0 and then flounder around trying to build a random encounter when you don't show 0_0
Certainly didn't happen to me today...and I'm definitely not triggered
sorry for that bad experence
It's fine lol just kinda floundered for a sec
But LUCKILY I'm running an ocean campaign and there's all kinds of cool little encounters I can toss at the party
that sounds cool
So the party fought a giant hermit crab using half a ship as a shell...their first boss ^^
When I say ship...i.mean small fishing boat not..full on galleon or anything huge
oh god
They enjoyed it...and he had secret mechanics of losing the ship at half health wich reduced his armor class and made him lose resistance to their attacks ^^
that would be hard to keep track
hi
yo
Not really lol
I put a damage tracker in the chat to show the party how much damage they've dealt to monsters
Like you do 5 damage to a skeleton it's
Skele/5
kind wish some other dms do that
but at the same time not knowing make thinks exciting
I don't worry about players reading statblocks because I don't use base statblocks and always give monsters unique attacks that you won't find on a statblock
The crab had a special organ that fires a black sludge that does a tiny amount of acid damage and can blind a player
But that move was only unlocked after they destroy its shell ship ^^
So ac for it goes down bur it gets a new ability

Remember that this channel is to help new players to D&D and not necessarily your house rules/homebrew.
Sorry!
Are there +1 and +2 bonus points that I can use on any status I select when I use the Point-buy system without spending any of the normal 27 points (just like in Baldur's gate 3)?
You use the 27 points and only after you add your racial ASI (or the +2/+1)
Ok, is there any calculation of how many total points there are for the added statuses considering the question that after level 13 you spend 2 points?
What do you mean "added statuses"?
Are you creating a level 13+ character?
Just start with a level 1 character normally. At the class levels that you would get ASI (level 4, 8, 12, 16, 19) you get +2 (or +1/+1).
The ASI isn't added to the 27 points of Point Buy.
Like, if this issue didn't exist, the cost of points above 13 would go to 2, the total number of points that would exist would be 75 (8 x 6 = 48 + 27), but since this system exists I wish there was some way to calculate It would be easier because I'm easily clumsy with numbers
You are using the wrong terms when you said "level 13"
If you're not using D&D Beyond for character sheets, here's a Point Buy calculator:
https://chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html
thanks
Regarding the Ability Score limit, I heard that its limit is naturally 15, right? If I have a racial bonus, can I put 15 in one of the statuses I choose and the bonus I have will not be canceled?
With the Point Buy system you can have a max of 15 in one ability score before you apply your racial ASI to.
BTW, it's "ability score" not "statuses"
For example a high elf has +2 Dex and +1 Int. So with the Point Buy system, you can have 15 Dex but then add +2 to the Dex with a total of 17.
cool, thanks
Again, use that Point Buy calculator I linked above.
Regarding the dice roll to determine the increase in health per level, can I or cannot I add some type of proficiency bonus or Ability Score modifiers to increase the total value?
Only your Con modifier
naur my gif didn't load
So if I roll a die and receive a 4, can I add a +2 to that result?
@idle yacht I can help with character creation if you want ^^
@torpid prism do ya run online stuff?
I would like that. I'm almost halfway there but I would really like some help with this
ooh dope. do you mind if I dm ya to ask some questions on how you run your online stuff?
I have a question for anyone here with DM experience
If me and a group of friends just wanted to get into the game for the first time is it doable for a new player to go straight to being a DM
Ive played baldurs gate 3 and I feel I have a very solid grasp on the rules and have read about how to DM extensively but im wondering if its really recommended that I at least play the game at least once before running one
Yep! Perfectly doable and there are resources to help. It's especially doable if you and the players are all friends and all equally new- you can help each other remember rules and stay on track, and all know that you're all learning.
Prewritten adventures can be very useful for new DMs, as they help cut down the preparation and balancing aspect, and allow a DM to get a feeling for pacing an adventure and setting up encounters.
Do note that BG3 is subtly different in rules to 5e (mostly in what isn't a bonus action or not for example).
But it's fine to get rules wrong too. Or just ignore them for now. If something feels off, you can always check the books to remind you and correct yourself if you feel the written rule would work better than how you're doing it.
would you mind sharing what those resources are?

Yeah the people at my would-be table have all played bg3. It wouldnt surprise me if we all agree to run it by bg3 rules cause that is what we are used to lol
I would advise against that; BG3 rules are designed in such a way to facilitate it working as video game, rather than a tabletop roleplaying game
How come
Like jump being a bonus action, that is also seperate to your movement. That's a bit more of a videogame concession, to allow for different movements, limited by the game.
In 5e, Jumping is just part of movement. You can jump as many times as you like, so long as you have movement left to do it.
And you don't use one of you precious action resources to do so.
Also there's the key fact that BG3 rule changes aren't formally documented, so you'll have nothing to reference while playing
In general you won't break the game too much using BG3 rules and logic, but some items in BG3 are certainly more powerful, and also were scripted that way just to make it work in the engine- while on table top, the human can decide how to adjucate and allow for a lot more freedom. You'll be missing out on some powerful actions and tools as well- such as the dodge action.
Aaand also that 1s and 20s do not mean automatical failure/win on checks. If they did, they'd drive DMs mad with players insisting to do ridiculous things because they tecnically have a 5% chance of doing the impossible.
There's a few things in BG3 that feel fine and fun as a single player / multiplayer vs game, restricted by what the game has coded in... and in a table top where it's the DM having to keep the leash on everything and make sure it's balanced enough to be fun while also still being something of a challenge.
I'd also suggest checking out the above bot post. As for what you need to buy, honestly nothing much different to what a player does, and depends on your budget and how much you want.
You can play nearly entirely free with basic rules + dice, and using 'Theatre of the Mind' to imagine all the maps and monsters.
Or you could buy the PHB, which is great for players and DMs, and maybe get some props to work as maps and creatures. Or a DM screen with notes for you, or a prewritten adventure to play. Up to you.
am taking note of all the important chapter of phb, MM and Dmg
I'm new, and I have no idea how DnD works (especially online), I just know the part it has rp which interests me.

do orgs and goblins count as humanoid?
ah, thx
are there any pc websites/apps to play dnd on?
Many, people use discord or forums for communicating, and apps called virtual tabletops such as roll20, fantasy grounds, foundry, D&D Beyond Maps, owlbear rodeo and talespire for shared maps and tokens
oh thanks!
Exact same here ngl
Is it possible for a character to start with a custom item in a dnd campaign? Not something super powerful or anything but like
Maybe a trinket that has some faint magical abilities that is heavily tied to the character's backstory
Idk how often stuff like that is done
I have absolutely no idea 🤗
A few background options start players off with unusual trinkets that have extremely minor effects, such as the Feylost background. Typically, the background has you roll on or pick from a table of pregenerated options. Whether your DM will allow you to start with anything more significant or customized than that is up to the DM, so you should reach out.
Fair enough, thank you!
How do I send a request thing on looking for DM?
go to #find-a-game and click the "/looking-for dm" option
Hi, I'm trying to find an in-person group, not one that plays exclusively online. Is this Discord server an appropriate place for that search?
It’s probably not the most effective way to find an in-person game. 😅
I’d recommend checking local game shops or libraries.
Or finding a general-interest online community specific to your area and asking there.
Or getting your friends or family together!
I see. I've had some difficulty finding a group. Thanks for letting me know!
Thanks
Anyone wanna play

İs there any group that i can join rn and instantly play
likely not. d&d requires some level of time commitment.
Hmmm that will be a bad my timezones is like 2 or 3 hours back than anyone elses
Plus no one responded when i asked if I can join them
Finding a D&D group is a process that normally takes about a week, or more. You can't expect a response in just a few minutes
DnD tends to require a lot of set up time. It can sometimes take days to weeks to find a group, and even after you've found a group it usually takes a few days to get everyone's character sheets together before scheduling a game
Okey thanks for helping (:
If you still don't have luck after a week or so, you might want to consider making a post in #750812887697588356 (check the #find-a-game post for a guide) instead.
Okey thx
Hi, im also very new to dnd. my boyfriend plays it with his group but I dont really want to join it because its not the style of playing that i particulary enjoy. its also very confusing how to go around this server
There are tons of resources for DMs out there, so it's really dependent on what aspects of the game you want assistance with.

i also got into dnd because of the webtoon 1 HP Club, a webtoon about dnd
I got recommended to try dnd but I have no clue about it, could someone teach me how to play?
Unfortunately we don't have the resources to teach people on a 1:1 setting on this server, but we highly recommend reading through the basic rules posted above!
hey all! newcomer here, what channel would i ask questions about feats, spells, etems etc in?
This channel would be the best for basic questions. If you have specific rules questions then #rules is where to go
thx! my question was, is there any way I can take a reaction(to move) when an enemy steps closer to me? I feel like I read about something like that, but cant remember the name
Here if you are new to D&D and we can give you the overview of the rules.
#dnd-rules is for asking about specific rules.
No, you don't have a reaction when an enemy is with 5' of you unless you have a specific (sub)class feature that says you can. However, if an enemy leaves your reach (usually 5') you can use a reaction to do an Opportunity Attack.
You're probably thinking of the Ready action.
Examples include "If the cultist steps on the trapdoor, I'll pull the lever that opens it," and "If the goblin steps next to me, I move away."
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Ready
ah that sounds familar haha, ty! idk why i remember it as a feat
You're probably thinking of the Polearm Master feat that grants you Opportunity Attack when an enemy enters your reach.
Can you use that for any character?
Any character can have a Ready action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ActionsinCombat
Thanks
is druid a good class
By what measure?
what is its strengths and weaknesses
It's very versatile, good at shutting down enemies and controlling the battlefield, decent support, and can summon some high-damage creatures
It also has great out of combat utility
however it isn't very good for melee fighting itself
or using weapons
ok
Druid is pretty versatile—they can swap their spells each long rest, their spell list is broad enough to encompass different focuses, and wildshape opens a lot of opportunities for infiltration, exploration, and more.
That said, they are one of the more complex classes.
ok
You'll find that every class is generally good at something. But whether they're good overall depends on who you're asking and what you're looking for
Hey, I was wondering. What channel do I go to to find a group of people to play with online? I’ve been wanting to start DND for awhile & I was looking to see where I should start?

hey how do i figure out my spellcasting ability on my character sheet as an artificer
Your spellcasting ability is listed at the bottom of your Spellcasting feature.
But for artificers, it's Intelligence.
Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for your artificer spells [...]. You use your Intelligence whenever an artificer spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Intelligence modifier when setting the saving throw DC for an artificer spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
The description for every class that casts spells will tell you what your spellcasting ability is for that class. Just gotta read through it.
thanks i was just making sure i dont often make spell casters or artificers
hi, im trying to like get started on dnd but i dont know where to start at all
and im a bit lost with all the dices and like abilities and all TT
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
veeeeeery new
i only heard about dnd and like i saw the smosh games series (thats what encouraged me to actually get into it)
thank you very much TT
im very intimidated by the amount of content and information there is about this world
The resources here and the ones OMYAC has suggested are great starts.
Remember you don't need to read all the rules before beginning, in the same way you don't need to read through an entire cookbook before trying out the recipes.
But the rules on making a character and combat are worth looking over as they're the more complicated ones.
its exciting but overwhelming lmao
Take your time. Read the rules at your own pace. If you have something you have trouble grasping then ask here.
You can practice making a PC (player character) by yourself before making a game, although it's best to make a new PC for any game you join, as there may be house rules or such.
Dndbeyond has a character maker you can use, or you can try to write one out manually on a sheet from the site. And absolutely ask questions here if stuck!
yeah especially for the character bc i made one on roll20 and like, there was a lot of specific things
Any particular thing at the moment you're a bit stuck on?
well when i made the character it was more like all the languages and like, im a big elf lover, i play an elf in almost every rp fantasy thing im in, but im so unaware of the limitations of the world and what i can and cant do that i felt a bit limitated when writing my character if that makes sense
like i was chosing the languages and like type of dragon they were descending from but i didnt actually know what i was doing and how it was affecting my character TT
its more like the lack of knowledge about the worldbuilding
I recommend you readhte Basic Rules first so you know the limits of the game first before you create an OP OC.
As a player you don't really create the world, that's on the Dungeon Master (DM).
yeah yeah of course
Omd same
The smosh games series was elite
How do you make a character on paper
I think you get these printout things
Use a fillable character sheet PDF then print it out.
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Ok thanks
YESS ITS SO GOOD
i always wanted to get into dnd and it made it so accesible and fun
cant wait for season 2
BUG WAS AMIMGG
I LOVE BUG BUT KODA OMG
Samee, wanna see what happens after they got the bounties
i love cocky characters that are really pretty
KODA WAS A MOOOD
Please stop "yelling"
Terribly sorry sir.
reaal honestly i love them all so much
damien as a DM tho, so good, he has great storytelling skills
BTW, perhaps move the talk to #dnd-discussion. This channel is to help new players to learn the rules of the game.
👍
Hi, someone told me to come to this chanel to ask you questions.
I need help with a chara design job. I’m making a drakeide (humanoid dragon) from arid region. (Obligation to pose African cultural origins) only I do not find much information about possible sand dragons. What would be their breaths? Do drakeides necessarily have a breath? Is it possible in terms of lore and technique to make him an alchemist?
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Drakeides aren't a thing in D&D. The closest to a playable race are the dragonborn.
Blue and brass dragons are desert dwelling dragons in D&D.
in D&D, humanoid dragons are called Dragonborn. There are no dragonborn types that are specifically said to be native to desert regions. Dragonborn types are based on elemental affinity and heritage, such as the fire breathing red dragonborn or the lightning breathing blue dragonborn
And as for if they can be an alchemist, yes they can. Any race can play as any class. Alchemist is a subclass of the artificer class
Oh I understand how I read a French version of the book maybe the names of the races change. Excuse me for this misunderstanding. So in general I just have to choose according to the elementary affinity I want to put on it?
Sorry, I don’t know much about it
But thank you I will be able to get started in my chara design!
Remember to speak with your DM about their campaign world. Just because you want this or that for your character the DM may so no because it doesn't fit with their world.
I’ve already told you that I’m not doing a campaign.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
In the base rules of the game, Dragonborns come in 2 types, chromatic and metallic. Whichever elemental affinity you wish to pick, there is a chromatic option for that, and a metallic option for that. For example, Gold Dragonborn and Red Dragonborn are both based on fire. When it comes to actual dragons Chomatic dragons are normally seen as ruthless and evil, while metallic dragons are normally seen as kind and good. Dragonborns aren’t necessarily required to follow that same path, because their relationship to the dragons they are based on is loose at best. Their bloodline more like an ancient ancestor or lingering magical effect. But if you want your character to follow the same personality type as the dragon they are based on, that can give you a starting point for how to develop them
Oh okay, it’s super interesting. After I already wrote his whole story in summary I just had a few technical problems to understand how his race worked despite the online information. I was completely missing the information on the different dragons. In your opinion, what would be the most interesting element for an alchemist? I lean more towards the fire but maybe it would be more impacting. On the distinction between chromatic and metallic I think I take chromatic origins as my character becomes an antagonist
I would not recommend making a character to become an antagonist. D&D is a team game, where everyone is meant to work together. Betraying the party sounds like a fun story, but it can really ruin the fun for everyone else at the table.
As for what element works best for an alchemist, any can work. Fire is certainly a classic choice, but the class itself works with almost all elements.
Poison and Acid are typical themes for an alchemist as well
Make your character a bastard, but the parties bastard
I made my character snarky, sarcastic and arrogant. Outside of the beginning to establish character, I was only mean to NPCs
Um, hello!
Welcome
Hummm yes I admit it’s not very logical. After it’s his story that makes him an antagonist I tell myself that in other contexts he just passes for a man a little crazy and closed in on himself.
me again lol, could someone explain quickly what a hit die is ?
Would you be interested in knowing its history? @fallen surge
You need to keep in mind that it’s not “his” story. It’s your entire party’s story. You will be playing in a group
If you’d like to share your character’s backstory, #character-discussion would be the place to post it
It determines how many dice you roll for your hit points.
Oh d’accord
I’m gona look
also ive been following the convo and im a bit confused at how much i should put into my character's backstory
I imagine I think too much charadesign and not enough collective games
Sorry, I can’t help too much, I don’t know anything about it
If you don't have a DM yet just have generic stuff not specific to a world or its lore.
Childhood, random details, eventful story where all the bonds and goals are established, call to action
oh and thanks btw !!
ok so if i join a campaign without a clear backstory its cool ?
Your character’s backstory should explain their reason for adventuring, but not be overly complex. You should not write a novel. The purpose of a backstory is to explain and justify the choices you made during character creation, and to give your character a reason to be an adventurer. All of the actually cool stuff should happen while you are playing the game, not before it
I am a rogue raised among the slums, I habit of stealing a lot of cheese so once I snuck into a nobles diner and stole some.
The Knights chased me out of the city
stealing that for my bawkstory /j
Or maybe I’m a rogue that developed the roughish style after being inspired by a famous pirate, and aspire to be like him
ok so if i explain how my character (im thinking into making them a sorcerer) got their powers, its fine right ?
Yes
okayy thank you very much !!
You don’t exactly have to play into the sterotypical fantasy of that character
Maybe you are more like a fighter, but have a rogue fighting style
Rebranding your sneak attack as a precise and deadly blow
You can go for the story of 'Thorfinn' from Vinland Saga.
My fav character I made was an assasin artificer who betrayed his employer by stealing the loot from a mission he was sent on but reported the item as missing, but when the employer found out about this he captured his family inside a warehouse and sent him on another mission to blow it up.
Ka-boom, and he was responsible for the death of his own family.
Hes currently a Battle Smith subclass, so his Steel Defender, curious of the whole world acts kind of like his son
thats so cool
i mean sucks for him but thats a cool background
Sly Spineless Artificier with an Aussie accent who is really good at deception and stealth of hand? Right up my alley
Hi guys i know there is a lf player sectiok, but is there a way to find a party by sorting through time? Like search word monday?

is this the right place to search for something like that?
+I have a lot of other questions about the server, where do i ask it? (where to play, is there some events, etc)
im sorry but i dont know what to do at the score section of the dnd beyond character maker TT
im scared to mess it up smh
you and me both-
both what?

DnDBeyond is D&D's official D&D digital toolset and has a character creator app.
Also DnDBeyond hosts' the online digital version of the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
hey, my names kyler, i was curious if there were any starter kits that i can buy online. me and my friends are just getting into d&d and i will dming the session. any tips will help alot!
I'd suggest starting with the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
so every thing is in that website?
I thought the camps are is here
If folks like it enough, look into investing in the Players Handbook and an adventure module (Wild Beyond the Witchlight or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle can be good starter adventures.
All official adventures and rule books can be purchased for online access at DnDBeyond. And as noted they have various digital tools to help with playing D&D including the character builder, digital dice rolling, encounter builder and combat runner, and they are currently working on a map tool (currently in Alpha).
You can also buy physical books from local bookstores/gamestores or through online retailers.
(physical books do not grant you digital access though - unless you buy the physical + digital bundles through Wizards of the Coast's online D&D store)

what is a hit dice?
A Hit Dice is the dice size used by your class to roll hit points when you level up, and to regain hit points when you short rest
You can read more about them here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice
Your character's hit dice should be in the very first feature of their class description
?tag new hp
Hit Points and Hit Dice
Whenever a creature takes damage, that damage is subtracted from its hit points. Creatures with more hit points are more difficult to kill.
Your hit point maximum is determined by your hit dice, both at 1st level and when you gain a level. Your class and level determine your available hit dice. You can also spend hit dice to recover hit points during a short rest, and recover spent hit dice during a long rest.
When you drop to 0 hit points, you either die outright or fall unconscious. Temporary hit points can provide a buffer against damage to protect your actual hit points.
So if I'm a barbarian, my Hit Die will be a 1d12?
Per level of barbarian.
ok
If you're a level 5 barbarian then you have 5 HD (d12). Remember that at level 1 your hit points is maxed out so a level 1 barbarian has 12 hit points + Constitution modifier. Subsequent levels in barbarian you roll a d12 (plus Con modifier) to determine your new hit points.
ok, makes sense
Or take the average (7 hp for a d12)
Underrated comment of the year.
A d12 hit die is great and all... but has the greatest chance of providing less than the average than everyone else
That doesn’t sound like how math works
Whichever you do (roll or average), be sure everyone at your table does the same thing.
By having more sides to the die, there are more sides for it to land on.
100/6×4=66.66667
100/8×5=62.5
100/10x6=60
100/12x7=58.3333
Mathematically true.
how does this math work exactly
100 divided by the hit die value multiplied by the value it would need to land on to be the average number you could just choose instead of rolling.
what channel should i go to for joining a game
Just to show the percentage chance that is lower than that
what is the reasoning for this?
Please read (carefully) #find-a-game as it explains how our Looking For Game channels work and the bot commands to use to create posts in them.
Also folks let's keep the channel clear for newcomers to ask questions about the game rules and mechanics
Please take the math proofs elsewhere - I'd suggest #dnd-discussion

- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
This channel is more for the basics of the game. Your question is better suited to #character-discussion.
Does throwing weapons work with the same damage principles as regular attacks, or does it have its own rules?
if a weapon has the thrown property you can throw it without mechanical issues. You can read about it here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
cool, so I can throw tridents and hand axes without any problems
if your character is proficient with them
not all characters can use all weapons with proficiency
I know this part, but being a barbarian class I can use both without any problems.
I have another question. I remember that I've seen some sessions and at one point in Baldur's Gate 3, the characters find a weapon that is very heavy and that is restricted to certain creatures, monsters or NPCs that have the ability to lift them. Going towards Path of Giants, being a Goliath and having a Giant Foundling background, would I be able to use them? Like the sword that Storm Giants use in their illustrations?
Ive Seen people play dnd irl, but I’ve never played it before. Could someone teach me how to play so I’ll make sure I have the rules down?

In regards to the Path of Giants subclass, you'll only be able to do what the subclass abilities say you can do.
Anything else is going to depend on DM.
The free basic rules and resources in the bot post above can help you with the basics.
I also recommend attending a dnd event at game shops, libraries, and Adventurers League as they tend to have very new player friendly games.
Some are even hosted to specifically for new players.
Hello 👋
Welcome to the hobby
Does anyone know how I can find people to play dnd with?
My friends think dnd is weird
Lol
- This can be played in person and online.
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
It's okay if your friends have no interest in dnd, in the same way that not all friends make good roommates, not all friends make good dnd friends.
Hey ya'll I'm honestly really excited to be trying this stuff

Can my character be a wizard with a cat in his hand?
Do I make a character before I go to a tabletop place?
Because i would love that
I liked how people played and wanted to play too because it just looks fun

Wizards learn Find Familiar -spell, and one of the options for a familiar is a cat, so you could easily have that 😎
Is there any limitations to what my character can be?
You can make a wizard and have a cat as a familiar.
Full details is in the free basic rules.
you’re the best like actually the second you said visual learner
Like Megumis cat from konosuba?
Yay
Best approach is to read through the free basic rules and look at the mechanics of each class to create a character you want.
Just added the series to my favorites so I can watch it when I’m bored at work haha
Do I have to buy a physical copy or can I do it online too bc your boy don't got a job
Thank you brudda 🙏
The free basic rules has free in the name 😅
Dndbeyond also has a character creator so you can build your character using the basic rules.
Oh sweet I’m gonna try that
Thank you
You can also buy individual classes and races from books so people can take a more budget friendly approach and buy only what they need.
Do you have any suggestions on servers on discord that host dnd

Hi! I have messed around with dnd with my friends a little bit, but that was mostly us just messing around and having basically no idea what were doing. I know a few basic things, but im still in a very surface level stage with D&D. Any help would be awesome since i really want to be able to learn more about this game and be able to play it and actually know what im doing lol.

Thanks man! I really appreciate it! I’ll absolutely check those out and learn all i can!
Alright, as another newcomer, that really helped, thanks!
I'll be your friend bro
Here, I'm also a freshman. Glad to start a friendship with you. :))
So...I've played a few times in the past but I can't guarantee a specific day to be off to play. What's my best option?
You might want to look into something like Adventurers League which is usually more one-shots than ongoing campaigns
Then you just play a game when you happen to be free
I've had a group that played "whenever" we could. We aimed for once a month, and ended up playing about every other month for about 2-3 years. It wasn't consistent, but it was still fun while it lasted. The most important thing was to make sure everyone was cool with that - and that we all tried to chip in to make scheduling as easy as possible.
I'll look into that then
Um how do you form a party to play with in the first place
Depends, do you want to play as a player or as a DM?
There’s many ways to find a game both in person and online. In this server there’s #find-a-game for example
Hey guys, I think i submitted a form to the bot but I dont see it posted in any LFG channels. Does it take time to be moderated ?
I'm a player. ya i followed the instructions and attempted to post in looking for dm
I figured it out.
I have a sorta a question about the command spell could I say the word truth and then ask them a question and I will know they answer honestly
If I was your DM, I probably wouldn't let that work. It's not really a "one word command" like the examples given like "flee" and "halt". Your DM might let it work that way, though, so worthwhile to ask. ✌️
What Steve said - "Truth" is not a command, someone can't "truth". The following question is no longer part of the spell, so they'd be under no obligation to answer that either.
I would have thought "truth" would need to be a spell and roll a dice to see if it works or a potion? and then have some sort of time limit.
There is a spell called zone of truth that might be what you're thinking of
What is the D&D with strangers experience like? I’ve always done D&D with friends but I figured it might be better to broaden my demographic.
Like any social activity it varies
It can be interesting to play with completey unknown people- table ettiquette and culture can be very unique to each group, so mixing it up and playing with strangers can introduce you to very different styles and approaches, some of which you might like enough to continue in your other groups. Other times you can be caught off guard. Communication is a big part of D&D, even more so with strangers and not people you've known for a while.
How do I join a campaign? (it's my first time playing D&D)

You can join online games through this server following the instructions in #find-a-game , or by looking through LFG on other platforms like roll20's or reddits.
In person you can gather friends together and play or look out for local games in local game stores, libraries, or advertised on facebook or meetup.com and such
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online. He's another user on here and made this very handy guide to finding games.
Hey i wanted to ask something is it important that i read the handbook before i start or does it not mater im new and thinking to buy a handbook so thougt i woud ask
The Basic Rules are free and contain most of what's in the Player's Handbook. You can get a lot of mileage out of those, and if you find you enjoy the game enough, then you can drop some money on the hobby.
And it definitely helps if you read over the rules, especially character creation, ability scores, and combat.
You may be interested in play-by-post, which is essentially text-based play. You can read more about it in this D&D Beyond article. Some are asynchronous, so folks can post as they're available—great for folks with unpredictable schedules.
Ok thanks a ton
Hello guys! So, I am new to DnD and I don't understand anything. I will be moving to the UK to study in some months, and a student invited us to play once we get there. Should I create a character now and save it? Or does the character have to be created once I know the "rules" or "map" she will set? (Sorry for the basic terms)
You should definitely talk to your DM about your character, as they might have specific rules about what they accept or specific races/classes might not fit in the setting. There's no harm in already creating one now though, to familiarize yourself with the system.
At worst, it'll just make it easier to make the next one and at best you'll have a character ready to play with.
Thank you! I will start creating one then, and ask her later for the rules 👍
In the meantime read over the free Basic Rules.
The odds are high that if you stick to the options in the free Basic Rules you'll be OK regardless.
Not perfect, but high.
I've actually tried that before and completely forgot it existed. Good point.
Hey
Yo!
Sry that I'm late... Had to go and get a shower curtain and a shower handle thing...
I don’t know what I’m doing here but I kinda wanna try d&d

hello guys, im quite new to DnD, most of the things I know are from BG3
we are starting a new campaign with friends, and I am planning to play an Aarakocra blood hunter with order of the lycan, cause why not
i was wondering what kind of bird shape should I go with, which could be fun, potentially cool rp wise and useful throughout the story
sorry of something is nonsense and not possible 😄
The race's abilities don't change, but you can describe it however you want, so if you want to be a peacock, for example, you could. But that doesn't change what you can do.
I assume if I choose a hummingbird, it will be a bit different than an ostrich? at least in size
Flavour is free. Changing the gameplay mechanics isn't.
Nope! Player races can only be specific size categories. While they do impact gameplay, it's probably not to the extent that you're imagining.
Playable races are either Small or Medium sized.
I see... can you point me somewhere where I could read about them, limitation and whatnot?

I see there are bunch of tutorial videos, if I go over those, I guess I should have a good base to start the game with?
and then look for the details
Yeah. It doesn't cover everything, but you'd have a solid base.
also one of the biggest challenges will be to write my backstory... 😄
We have #character-discussion if you want help fleshing that out. A lot of members here advise the three-sentence version: your upbringing, how you became an adventurer, and what your goals are.
that sounds like my style
i was messing around with the official(?) online character sheet generator, but I faced a paywall with blood hunter
any free online alternative I can play around with?
dndbeyond is the one official site for getting dnd content and putting it into an online character sheet, so any others that might exist on the internet have pirated content and can't really be promoted on this server
I won't swear to it, but I thought blood hunter is freely available. Did you enable Critical Role content in the home tab?
gotcha
I will double check
i haven't played with bloodhunter in a hot while so i don't know if its free or not
seems like it works, maybe i was at the wrong place before
If I ready an action, does that action come with a bonus action?
So normally id have a Spell that takes 1A to cast, and after that I can do a bonus action.
If I readied a spell beforehand, and the turn comes, do I get another bonhs action?
I feel as if its a no since the bonus action is the bonus for THIS action, but I want to make sure anyway
Can you be more specific about what spell you are referring to? How each one works is specific to the wording of that individual spell
Web cast and Magic Missle (readied)
No it is only the action.
Where does the bonus action come in then?
a melee attack
no, readied action only readies 1 action, not the entire turn
huh?
you can on your turn use your move and bonus action then ready an action
Actions and Bonus Actions are completely separate. You have one of each every turn, and they act as resources for what you can do that turn.
There's plenty of things that cost an Action, but only very few things in the game that cost a bonus action. You can only spend a bonus action on something that explicitly costs a bonus action.
For example, as you mentioned a melee attack, you can use the Attack Action (which costs an action) to make an attack with a melee weapon. By default, you can't do that with a Bonus Action.
Also, @quick rampart , I'm pretty sure there's a tag for folks coming from BG3.

Not sure I knew that thread existed. Going to check it out now.
What feature is allowing you to make a weapon attack with your bonus action after you cast as spell as your action? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the Eldritch Knight's 7th level feature "War Magic" but that only works with cantrips
Blade singer has something very similar
Similar, but not quite the same.
Bladesinger lets you cast a cantrip in place of one of your extra attacks
ElK lets you spend a bonus action to do an attack after using a cantrip
The only way I can think of attacking with a bonus action after casting a spell is with a pet or something like spiritual weapon
Im like brand new to dnd the closest kind of table top experience i have is warhammer idk where on earth to start any help would be appreciated

welcome
The bot post above has an excellent set of resources to help you get started. Once you've taken a quick glance at the basic rules, if you have any specific questions, we are more than happy to help!
Thank you!
“Ready” is a specific Action you can take on your turn (that puts a condition on certain other Actions occurring outside your turn)
A bonus action is separate from your Action. If you have a feature that uses your bonus action, read carefully to see if it is dependent on taking a specific Action.
For example, If a bonus action feature requires you to spend your Action on Attack, then taking the Ready action means you have not satisfied the requirement needed to use the bonus action
If your bonus action feature does not have such a requirement then you may use it any time on your turn.
You cant “hold” both, as Ready is a specific use of your Action (and also uses up your reaction)
I just bought a 7 piece dice set, I just wanted to ask, when do you actually use the percentile dice? Like the ones with multiples of 10
The d100 is rarely used, most often for random tables (for DMs).
Player features that use it are pretty scarce.
On the player side it’s most often used for the clerics divine intervention feature
In much older editions, rogues had certain thief skills (picking locks, find/detect traps/ climb walls/etc) that were all percentile based.
Hi newish player here
Welcome!
Hello new to both DnD and Discord.
Hey there!
Is this where I ask how to I find a game or group of people to play with, I have read the rules in the #find-a-game , but is was not super clear to me, it might be my lack of Discord knowledge.
So to post in our looking for game channels you need to use the bot commands described in #find-a-game
You start with “/looking-for” then select the kind of post you want to create (e.g. use “dm” if you want post in #750812887697588356).
The bot will give you a form to fill out. Once you submit it it will post in the channel and create a thread on the post
Use the thread to make any clarifications or communicate with folks.
And looking for DM means I am looking for a DM that needs people to fill there game, and looking for players is a DM looking for players to join their game correct.
Correct.
So if you are a player looking for a game you can advertise yourself in #750812887697588356
Or you can find DMs needing players in #looking-for-players
Or you can find other D&D servers that may have other game opportunities in #looking-for-community
In the community one it asks for your community, I do not know what to put in there or what my options are is, there a place to get more information on that.
Also thank you for your help.
Community is like community Discord servers. As a player you would read through others postings there and if the community sounds interesting, click their Discord server link to join their server.
OK that sounds like a discord thing I have to figure out, thank you.
So like how you joined this server
I think I got it, those post in looking in community describe communities on other servers and why you would want to join them. I joined this server because it was an link in an email when I joined DnDBeyond. I will ask my teenage son, I am sure he can help point me in the right direction.
Well welcome to the server (and the wild world of Discord where Discord rolls out or changes features with little warning). 🤪
That is ok, I have 20+ years as a software developer so I get rolling out new features without warning. I have also been avoiding Discord, but my industry also seems to be push me in this way, so I should be learning it anyway.
Is there a place to understand the glossary of terms I am reading, I have been reading a lot of the content of DnD Beyond, but there are terms that seem common here on Discord, or in DnD that I don't know if I have the full understanding for, examples: homebrew, Westmarch.
There are glossaries out there (here's one example), but odds are they won't cover everything. For instance, neither homebrew nor westmarch are on there. Google itself is usually decent in this regard, but you can always ask around the server.
Homebrew is unofficial content made by players and DMs, not the official publisher. A westmarch is akin to an MMO: you have a single character in a living world, but you may be playing with a different DM and party each time to tackle missions. I'm sure someone else will explain it with more nuance.
Some people also use homebrew to refer to content made by third party publishers, but that's less common in my experience
That's why I went broad with my definition: if it isn't WotC, it's homebrew. Generally.
Also, a lot of these things you pick up over time when talking with the community and picking up the lingo. Never feel like you can't ask what a term means. New phrases are coined over time, so everyone needs to ask occasionally.
For homebrew, this was the definition from the old server, since we had a command for that 😁
What is homebrew?
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Thanks everyone. I am pretty good at usually google it, it what I saw seem as you all mentioned to broad for me to not ask.
Also ways nice to seem a community that is open to newbies asking questions. Really appreciate it.

Heya! If looking for games, the above #find-a-game channel gives instructions on how to use our looking for channels here to find games through this server.
There are other 'LFG' (Looking for groups) aswell on other sites and platforms worth checking out, like roll20's LFG or r/lfg and so on. Be sure to cast a wide net and be patient but active- finding a good group can take time and communication, like meeting any new people and making sure you vibe.
Also try to open yourself up to timezones beyond your own. Always worth checking some of the more common timezones that appear and noting the time difference- just because they're 8 hours ahead won't mean your schedules can't work. For example, For my group our Time zones are usually GMT/UTC: -8,-7,-5 ,0, +1, +2. That's a 10 hour difference between two players!
Hi, I am pretty new to TTRPGS. Interested in D&D because I am obsessed with Baldurs gate 3. I am in the EST time zone and unavailable on Saturdays. Would love to join a campaign, but just speaking to some experienced players and DMs would be great so I can better immerse myself in the rules and concepts. Thanks for reading 🙂

Thanks for the advice
Ah, so really just finding a game then and just joining in the chat
Yeah I made a character and everything. I just have never actually played a game 😪
Thanks for helping 😄
hi all 🙂 I'm quite new to DnD as a whole (so forgive my ignorance if I'm not that clued up on a fair few things, but eager to dive right in) and I've created a character too but not played a game yet either. Is there any general advice or resources that I should be looking at before looking for my first game, or is it better to do a 'trial by fire' type of deal?
I've been following a rather long campaign on YouTube but not sure how applicable it would be to me lol
Well try and learn how your character sheet works and the core concepts like how to make an attack roll, roll damage, a skill check, and saving throws.
But don't feel like you need to memorize it all!
You'll learn mostly through doing.
But it is extremely helpful to know the terminology and some of the core game mechanics
I gotcha, I've been following the Viva La Dirt League DnD campaign, and although it's set in their own world it appears that the core mechanics are the same (I'm fairly sure) so I think I know how some of the basics work, but I am a bit worried about getting into a game and then making a blatantly bad choice without knowing you know 😮
It's a bit different to most game styles I've seen, so I'm still finding my feet as it were lol
Yeah - watching streams/shows can be a decent way to learn how the mechanics work in real games albeit keep in mind many shows/streams are entertainment first and less about rules fidelity.
I did get that feeling from it to be honest, which is why I didn't want to rely on it as my sole basis for playing the game 🙂 DnD has definitely captured my interest, the amount of lore behind it is a bit overwhelming too but I'm gathering that a lot of that I'll learn by playing too right?
unless there's any hard reading I should do first lol
If you haven't yet, take a look through the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
There's also useful resources pinned in this channel
Once you feel somewhat ready to start playing, give #find-a-game a read as it has helpful info on how to find a game and instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
that's awesome thanks! I downloaded the DnD Beyond app and got the basic rules downloaded on there so I can definitely go back and have a deeper read, I also didn't see the pinned resources so I appreciate you pointing those out 🙂 I'll do a little more prep and then see about jumping into my first game
I'm pondering whether I should DM or PC in doing some one shots
Well if all else fails, you can always roll a dice to decide...
hmmmm yep, but which one? 😆 perhaps play it safe with a D20 haha
I have to say, I have mad respect for DMs though, at this stage I couldn't image the level of planning and stuff that goes into running a campaign 🤯
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
I love DM'ing but yes there is a bit of work in preparing a game session.
But I like to run pre-written adventures and tweak/spice them up to suit my players.
For me DM'ing is just another way to play D&D and I enjoy it.
Oh I can absolutely see why for sure! I think the thing I like the most about DnD (even pre-written adventures) is the fact that no two games are going to be exactly the same and it's pretty much down to the players and the DM as to what direction it all goes in 😄 as someone who's done creative writing before, it has a particular appeal and I'm surprised it's taken me this long to dive into it
What is a "Westmarch"?
I'm looking for a build that is like a paladin of life. That is like both paladin of order of ancients and tanks with cleric Life Drain and has animal druid abilities from the circle of the moon.
What do you guys think?
#character-discussion would be a great place to hash out character ideas
Westmarch is a style of community D&D game that is best described by one of it's original conceivers: https://arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/78/grand-experiments-west-marches/
Basically there is no set D&D party. There are many players, potentially many DMs, it takes place in more of a sandbox world for the adventurer's to explore (a bit less story driven and more about exploring the world).
A group of players self-organizes and finds a DM that's available and then they go explore a bit of the world.
Potentially what one party does in the world could impact other parties and/or the world as a whole.

i made a charater
Hey im trying to dm for my group of 3 and im not too sure what im doing ive listened to many videos and read my dnd handbook but im still very confused does anyone have advice
Head on over to #dm-discussion and we can give you DMing advice.
Hey new to dnd and wanting to start a campaign can anyone send me in the right direction or invite me to one. Thx in advance
So the first thing you want to do is make a map for a small early game area where your characters can begin. Then you should try to find a hook so your characters can get thrown into the plot
Head to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Set my D&D beyond up so I'm hoping I can get into a nice/easy campaign to settle me in but I know that's a big ask when I come to have a mixed party of newbies and experienced players. I'll defo jump into discussions tho x
D&D Beyond is just a tool for character sheets and digital books. You can buy adventures there in its Marketplace.
Most experienced players are fine with newbies. However, 3 things you shouldn't do
1 argue with dm
2 try to be overpowered
3 think you know the rules better than you do
Seen D&D beyond was a good way to set things up for myself.
Hey Everyone! I joined in to learn more on how to play DnD, since I’m still a rookie.
@burnt quail glad to know I'm not putting experienced players off but I'll definitely follow the DM and how they play and create the world for us
Hello everyone Im an inspiring warlock looking to play for the first time
Best classes for beginners are barbarian, fighter, and maybe cleric
@burnt quail I had though of barbarian but I didn't want to be the "stupid guy swinging an axe" but it might be best for my first game over focusing on deception and intuition checks
Maybe a cleric then.
I'd happily take a cleric got a bit of an idea for a claric character
I would also say rogues, they are somewhat simple to play as since they don’t have that many complex class features
They are also pretty free when it comes to what they can do
Remember they don't have to be stereotypical. Rogues are good Forgot about them
Arcane trickster also adds in magic but in a much smaller potency than wizards
There is not that many bad (Mechanically) rogue subclasses
I had the idea of a rogues that focused on intimidation over stealth and instead of stealth/deception he just rolled intimidation "you didn't see me" any guard scared "I didn't see you" 🤣🤣
Might be a bit much for a first character but it's quite funny
Aye might be a little much, I did think I'd stress the DM with it. And being a newbie I wasn't sure if it would fly haha
It also might not be as viable as you'd like, it's a fun concept but it wouldn't work well on unintelligent beasts for example. The rogue's main tool for damage, Sneak Attack, also wouldn't work in a combat situation. That relies on stabbing/shooting from the dark, when enemies can't see your attack coming. Shouting "YOU CAN'T SEE ME" and then stab them from the front might not be as effective.
Hello
How does a play by post work?
It can vary group to group but the general idea is that on a text based group or forum, you all play by text.
There may not be an actual set session to play, but rather you're expected to keep up with the posts and try and respond within a reasonable timeframe. It can often be more RP heavy, with combat and exploration more abstract, as combat can take a long time to handle via PbP.
Hi is there any adventures waiting for players
You can find groups at #find-a-game
uh, heya
I'm new to D&D, and wanted to get into it, but I don't really know where to or even how to start
Multiclass Artificier/Wizard?
Multiclassing is not really a beginners topic
That's more something for #character-discussion
Far too much for a beginner
Multiclass at all is a bit much
These links will help!
?new
Ahem.
was that suppose to produce some links?
A slight misunderstanding with the spirits. They do that from time to time. Right, stand back.
It was, it was removed in error

Mr Smith was being very helpful providing some essential getting started resources
The demo is a bit of fun to give you a starting idea, the videos are quick snippets that talk about individual topics, and the Basic Rules are free.
oh wow, this is very much appreciated, thank you both!
hey i just wanted to ask about the random aspect of sorcerers
i keep seeing jokes about it but i dont really understand how it would play out in game
Only one type of sorcerer, Wild Magic, is "random"
And that's only because they sometimes have to roll on what's called the Wild Magic Table
oooh ok and what type of dice is it ?
Whenever the DM calls for it, the sorcerer rolls a d20 to determine if they get a wild magic surge. If they get a surge, they then roll a d100 to determine the effect. (On this table, 1 and 2 have the same effect, 3 and 4 have the same effect, etc. so there's 50 different surges available).
oooh ok thank you for the explanbation !!
But like Davyd said, that's only true for one specific subclass of sorcerers, the Wild Magic sorcerer. The other subclasses don't have any more randomness than the other classes do.
yes yes i was aware of that, i forgot to specify aha
im just playing a sorcerer for mt first character and everyone told me it was the most difficult class to play so ive been binging videos
and there was a lot of jokes but no actual breakdown of this feature lol
Sorcerer, like most classes, is only as complicated as you choose make it. You can be a pretty effective sorcerer by just throwing out fire bolts at everything that's hostile, with the occasional area spell if there's large numbers. Their sorcery points allow them more flexability in the way they cast than other spellcasters, though. Converting spell slots into sorcery points, and sorcery points either back into different spell slots or use them as fuel for your metamagic. Doing that optimally, that can be very complicated but you definitely don't need that to be effective.
hm yeah i see and like personally, i dont know about changing my spells everyday, seems like a lot for a first even though it leaves more space for experimentation
Well sorcerer's can't change their spells every day and the ones that can, you don't need to. Whenever I play a prepared caster, I keep the bulk of my spells the same every day and just swap out two or three based on what I expect to happen
hello
i'm new here
don't know what else to add for now
i want to join a game in like a month or so
with my crazy elf warlock i won't discuss here.

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful resources to get you started
Once you've given a quick glance through the basic rules, let us know if you have any specific questions. We're more than happy to help
Thanks So much! Just pure curiosity, does the race of the character change anything?
Only in broad brushstrokes.
Yes. Each race has their own set of abilities and features. What race you are playing as might give you additional powers, or skills, or such. And in the newer books they changed this, but in the base rules, races came with ability score increases, so what race you choose will affect your stats as well
ah thanks :D
Any race can play any class, but there are stereotypes and tropes, because certain races fit better into some classes over others. Like the goliath that can reduce damage that it takes makes for a good frontline melee fighter, and the halfling that can hide behind other larger creatures makes for a good rogue
oh and, how to be a "summoner" guy as a wizard?
Summoning spells are typically higher level magic, but when you get to that level, you just need to pick a spell that summons something, and add that to your spellbook so you can cast it
Tysm for your patience!
Pick up some summoning spells! It's as simple as that. Some specializations as you level up can help make you better at summoning, too
Can someone explain how the fighting style “protection” works as a fighter?
If you are standing next to an ally, and an enemy attacks that ally, you can use your reaction to make that attack have disadvantage
You have to be standing next to them, and the attack can't be at you. But that's all there is to it
Think of it as impeding or distracting your enemy's attack when they try and hit your friend
oh and btw, u know when u create a character, you manage and select your own hp and level, what if i for example max it out ? :d
The DM will tell you what level your campaign is starting at. D&D beyond will let you pick any level because it doesn't actually manage the rules for you. It just shows you whatever you tell it to show you
So, you don't get to just pick to start at level 20. You will most likely be starting at level 1
ahahah okay :D this looks like its gonna be really fun :D
As for HP, refer to this bot post above to see how that works
Question I'm a paladin and didn't use /have a shield so if I were to buy/get one does it increase my ac
Assuming you actually equip it, yes a shield will give you +2 AC
but it will prevent you from being able to use 2 handed weapons
When we encounter a monster or an encounter with one, will the HP be at random or will it be a certain HP?
That is for the DM to decide
It could be either! The DM has the monster's information, and the player doesn't have access to that knowledge by default.
Monster HPs in their stat block are expressed as an amount of dice, but also comes with an average. For example, goblins have "7 (2d6)" hit points. So, the DM can choose to either use the average value of 7, or to roll 2d6 to determine their HP
in the physical characteristics, shall i take it too serious? :D
Two-handed is separate from simple/martial weapons. And a paladin can be perfectly effective with a one-handed weapon and a shield.
Most of the boxes in the description section are there for your own use. Just to help you remember details about your character, and to give you some inspiration for role play. They have no mechanical purpose, and no one but you will see them, normally
Yeah but all I have is a grestsword don't know if I can one hand it
Greatswords have the two-handed property, so no you cannot make an attack with it if you are holding it in only one hand
Greatswords don't have the versatile property, IIRC. So no shield for now, though you could sell/trade the greatsword and get a one-handed/versatile weapon and a shield.
For now îl stick to it and trade it when I need more defense for now I can manage
The classic trade off between damage and defense!
Are there certain weapons that you need to use both of your character hands for?
Yep. Any weapon that has the Two-Handed Property
i builded my character. what should i do now? am i supposed to click on start a new campaign or next?
Hello 👋 I’m new here
