ive read a lot about it and im still lost
how many spells do i pick and can i cast any that have ritual as an option?
Any advice for someone DMing their first campaign
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Thx i didn't see it cause I don't have the role
Reading this would be my recommendation for getting started: https://howtogm.guide/
You learn 6 spells at level 1; how many you can prepare is determined by your Intelligence bonus and your wizard level. You can ritually cast any ritual spell tagged as such so long as it's in your spellbook.
how do i know what spells are in my spellbook
The ones you pick on level up and any others you copy into it during your adventure.
also what do you mean by prepare
oh okay
so i can cast those as many times as i want even if im out of spell slots?
Prepare is what you are able to cast (using a spell slot).
Better non dm question, how do I make a character for roll 20
oh so what the table says
No, you are limited by the number of spell slots.
Ritual casting means you can cast a spell WITHOUT using up a spell slot but it takes an additional 10 minutes to cast.
oh so not for combat use
It's great for utility spells and when you're in a safe area (not in a monster-filled dungeon).
Roll20 can be used with or without the built-in character sheet. If you wanted, you could make your character on a paper character sheet, or even on DDB, and simply just use Roll20 for moving your token around
if you do want to make a character sheet on Roll20, you can simply follow the same steps you would for any other character sheet, following the Basic Rules one step at a time. First you will need to join a Roll20 game, and have a token assigned to you, however
Aight so doing a one shot as an open hand monk and i've been gifted 500gp gold to buy stuff with, what can I even get other than like a normal healing potion to make use of all these riches
Invest it??
Well I was thinking about using ddb, but my players wanna do a one piece campaign, and ddb is limited on how characters are done, and homebrew is a bit much for these guys
Chapter 5 of the Basic Rules has pretty much anything you can purchase
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment
Since you're a monk you'll likely have a tool proficiency that would benefit from owning the actual tools. Backup weapons (especially darts so you have a ranged option), and perhaps even a mount can also be great
400 gp for a warhorse les go
Your idea of getting healing potions is a great idea too
i've done like two one shots and in both of them it was just starting/stuff given to you
Sooo 45 battleaxes?
If you want to buy a horse I'd communicate that intent to your other players and the DM. No use being able to move as quickly as it would allow, if your party are going to be left in your dust
Alternatively you can just ride beside them, like the peasents they are
You can't carry that much. Gold is practically useless in 5E.
it's only 180 lb for 45 axes lol
I apparently have a big 270 for carrying
Just keep in mind your backpack has a weight limit of 30lbs + rope
wel
You could purchase a Cart for your horse if you want to have lots of stuff
Until the first 5-ft wide hallway in the dungeon
im still so lost with trying to figure out wizard stuff
okay so if im a 2nd level wizard with a +5 int bonus how many spells do i know and how many can i prepare?
should be 7 then if it's level + int mod no?
whats the difference between known and prepare
prepared is that you can cast it normally, known is just that it's in your spellbook and has to be prepared
also when i gain spell slots for higher spells am i able to also pick spells there or do i have to shift the spells around?
For wizards, Known spells are the ones in their spell book while Prepared spells are what they can use with spell slots.
okay
so if i leveled up to 3 and only had 1st lvl spells would i remove 1st level spells to get 2nd level spells?
you can pick any spell you want on any available level and should props say what school of spells you can learn
should work if you want to
what do you mean
this is my first time making a wizard so im completely lost with it
Umm I'm new to dnd can somebody friend me and help me under stand it

nvm don't think wizards get to replace spells on wizard like other jobs. You just get to know 2 more spells when you level up and add them mto your book
And then while you are resting you can "equip" them
Then read #find-a-game very carefully
You looking to join an online or in-person game?
Thanks
Read the Basic Rules first. Joining a game without knowing any of the game's rules may be an issue with some DMs.
Ok
at level 3 provided you don't have feats/race spells you should have 10 spells in your book by then and while resting you can choose the level + modifier amount of spells to use while you go out.
cool
No, you never lose previous spells
A level 3 wizard would have 10 spells in their book, 8 of 1st level, and 2 of either 1st or 2nd level
Assuming +5 int, they could prepare 8 each day, from any of the ones in their book

So are artificers like engineers
Magical engineers.
Can a paladin's oath be anything as long as involved their god
I recommend all new players start out with either a Fighter, Cleric or Ranger - it will get you through the majority of the basics - as well as some of the spellcasting capabilities.
Paladins' oaths are their subclass. They don't need to worship a god to get their power, just their belief in their oath.
What is the distinction between unconsciousness and death
0 hp is Unconscious and the character has to start rolling Death Saves.
Death is dead.
But does it follow irl logic
Like if I take a cannon ball to the chest I think I'll be just dead right
Not necessarily
D&D and real world logic only have a passing familiarity with each other
Strong enough characters can shrug off ballistae to the face as long as there's not too much actual damage
D&D is not a physics simulator. It's a game with rules.
Hit points doesn't necessarily reflect actual damage to the body.
High level characters are just build different
What about when I mind flayer eats your brain do you like roll death saves as he sucks it through a straw
the equivalent of shooting milk through your nose
"takes 55 dmg" yeaaaaahhh
oh it does have the flavour text of it it reduces you to 0 ya dieeee
so don't get your brains eaten duh
So your telling me they can function without a brain like I get barbarians but even like a wizard?
i mean if you survive 55 dmg then idk you probably just had a huge will to die, but if it kills you brain gone
Ahh so high health=steel skull?
Guess so
If an ability says it kills you (such as getting your brain eaten), then you die. If it's just damage, then what happens depends on how many HP you have at the time
D&D characters can shrug off many things that would wreck an actual person
Is there somewhere here to find party members?

Hello 🙂
Hi!
How are you?
Good! Trying to find an online group I can join as a player, I'm the only DM in either of my local towns and I am so tired of it xD
I dont blame you haha! im new to DND all together so i have no idea what im doing 😛 I have played like once in highschool and watched a couple of times but i never caught on cause no one really explained anything to me xD
I feel that, it's been tough because my entire group started at the same time. We're all good friends so whenever we get the rules wrong or whatever we're always willing to change, so we're not afraid to messup lol
Thats a good relationship to have!!
i hope i can find a group that would help me learn and all but ive heard from a couple DND pplayers its hard to get into a group
So far it seems like it, but I'm hopeful! I've only got 5 months of experience and I think most DMs look for experienced players
yea i have no experience LOL so hopefully someone will be willing to help me learn!
I do hope you find something!!!

thats what im hoping to do is play and learn but i didnt know there are classes!!!
I have a question is it hard for first time players to get to play dnd in a party
Hello
It can be. It could take days to weeks to find a good table to play at.
Hey I want get into dnd but I completely have no idea how to play it, just wanted to know if someone can make a simplified explanation
Make a character, join a group and go on an adventure,
I would suggest a different order.
Join a group, make a character, go on an adventure.
Alr thanks idk why I didn't think that
If you want to do something you ask the DM and they will either ask for a dice role or you to RP the situation
The response I give isn't one born of sarcasm. It is my sincere belief the best way to learn how to play the game is to play it.
Oh I wasn't sarcastic either I genuinely didn't know I didn't think that so mb
If you’re in combat you’ll be using weapons or casting spells which requires a dice roll (d20+relevant ability mod+prof)
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources some simplified/ how to guides here
Ok thanks
But have a read of the free basic rules and any questions feel free to ask here
Alright thank you
If I have a general idea of a character or already have a full sheet made up, would that still be all right when looking for a group? I’m willing to change parts and add things if the DM wants, so it fits better into what they’re trying to do/their story/play style or whatever.
yeah that's fine. remember, it's a group game. Everyone is there to have fun together.
i mostly usually suggest not already having a character in order to walk into the setting with a fully open mind
Have some character concepts or the basic stuff down but be prepared to change stuff like stat generation method or backstory points to fit the DMs game and setting
DnD is an entertaining learning experience! My advice is to buy the PBH (Players Handbook) and read over it, giving you a step-by-step guide on how to make a character! It's worth the cost, and you get a cool book! Then all you have to do is play! It's a roleplaying game, so you can fully immerse yourself in a fantasy setting however you please!
Get with a group and start off swinging!
Or, read the basic rules before buying anyhting 🙂
This is a given!
Hey is anybody doing Tal’Dorei reborn?
Idk

Right and I’m gunna make my own adventure around it
Okay, so what you're asking is anyone making a campaign set in Tal'Dorei?
Call of the Netherdeep would be a good adventure to run if you don't want to write your own. I ran it and it was a lot of fun.

Hello everyone! Excited to have found a community of D&D lovers
I am new and looking forward to learning more about this fantastic world!
Welcome!
Hello! I'm completely new to this and literally have no idea what I'm doing. I've been listening to a DnD podcast by RoosterTeeth (I heard something is going on with them but im not sure what. I dont think the podcast is involved) called Tales from a Stinky Dragon and it got me really interested. I made a character on DnD beyond for fun. I have a general idea from the podcast about how to play, but looking for a group that meets like once a week for maybe a one-time game to see how it goes before I commit to anything. Thanks!
Check the links above.
If you have any questions about reviewing the basic rules, feel free to ask! 😄
New to D&D, banned from previous D&D server because of I had an arrogant character with the ability to break the immersion.
That’s why it helps to communicate your expectations with the group before you start playing.
Basically I broke characters 73 times. Because, once again I'm extremely new to this.. And instead of telling me up front that the character is a problem, they just banned me from joining future campaigns.
If you want silly and they want serious, that group might not be a good fit.
Session 0 and Safety Tools. Both excellent investments.
I appreciate your honesty...
Basically it was a civil war between dwarves and elves. With humans being looked upon as demons
Did you not have a session 0 where the DM explained the setting flavour? The DM should have told you that your character didn't fit with their campaign.
Let's maybe not focus on previous failed games and instead start over anew with a fresh approach at things
A session 0 with any new group can help make sure everyone's on the same page before things start.

Hey, I'm totally new in D&D and haven't played yet, can anyone recomend me where to start? I've already made two characters.

Start with at least skimming the free basic rules so you have an idea of how to create a character sheet, and then make sure to brush up on the rules for combat and skill checks.
Maybe watch some livestream D&D games on YouTube/Twitch to see the rules in action (understanding that many of these streams are for entertainment first and less about exactly how to play the game). Then go find a group to play with!
Ok, thanks.
I bought a set of die. Is it a bad idea to also get a coin?
It's neither a bad nor good idea
You don't need a coin to play, but if you want one, go for it
Well it's a coin that would have a 20 on one side at a one on the other
That'd still only be a d2
Which you can roll using any dice anyway
(or just flip a normal coin)
Same boat brother. Different corridor, but same boat.

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
The real task is finding a game and people to play with which #find-a-game can help with finding online games here.
noice, thanks bro 🙂
Howdy everyone! I’m newish to the world of d&d and was wondering what the best way to go about finding a party for a friend and I would be. We know a little of the basics and lore, but don’t really know where to start with that part.

As a bit of general advice:
- Be patient. Finding a game can take time; finding the right game can take longer still.
- Be proactive. Start replying to others instead of waiting for them to reply to you.
- Be diligent. New games are posted all the time! The more often you look and the more places you look, the more likely you'll find what you're after.
- Be open. Communicate your expectations up front. The more clearly you let people know what you do (and don't) want from your game, the easier it will be to find the right match.

Absolutely. I'm also old enough that I'm in the category of "not gaming at all is better than bad gaming."

I found a place that’s doing an adventurers league game next week, should I give it a try?
I don’t really know what the difference between adventures league and a regular game is
Adventure's League is meant for drop in games that a player can bring the same character to. You may not always have the same party of DM. Think of it like a guild.
A regular game would be the same players and DM over an extended period
Adventure's League is a great way to test the waters and learn the basics of the game. It had a set of rules specifically for it to help with balancing.
AL groups are generally pretty welcoming to new players, too. I’d recommend contacting them ahead of time to make sure you’re prepared.
There are some specific character creation guidelines you’ll need to follow as well. The folks in #adventurers-league can give you a hand with it.
ngl ive been playing tabletop rpgs for a long time but ive never really tried joining an AL
It's not for everyone but it can be a great way to learn the game and meet other players and DMs
I like AL because -- at least near me -- most con events are AL games.

Yes, people play online and in person.
can you find any for only pc

I'm probably in a minority, but I tend to actively encourage building your first half-dozen or so characters by hand. It helps you internalize some of the systems.
I don't think you're in the minority. Creating a character by hand helps you learn the game mechanics.
That's why I think it's preferable. Granted, I did the mechanical choices for my wife recently as we prep for her very first foray into any kind of TTRPG, but it was built around asking her questions. hmmm
how do I make a balanced character?

ok

could I get some help to make it?
I meant I have a special idea that I don't know how to go about
Have you read over the classes yet?
somewhat yea
maybe I could kinda list what it is and one of you could help me with a race and class?
Hi
Hey
#character-discussion would be better fit if you want help creating a character. However, I insist you read the Basic Rules to know the limitations are.
I'm a bit new,so I'd like to know where I could get started at

Are you looking for character creation or GMing/DMing?
hey can i have some help creating an unarmed character
@silver sail Pulling you back into here.
Again, the above basic rules are the best place to start. I'd highly recommend just picking options from them first and learning how they work. Test out making a character, ask questions here when stuck.
You don't need to read all the rules, but it's best to have a groundwork of how the game works before trying to come up with ideas only to find they won't work.
Monk sounds like a good bet for that.
Monk is the best bet
alright
im just worried since i heard monk can often be underpowered
I definitely know I wanna play a sorcerer guy tho
I just want to try and fit something with that
It definitely can be at times. It's sort of like a fighter in the sense of it really only does one attack that deals around what a spell caster could do in one or two turns, but they are very fun to play.
ok
A great way to add to them is to make them mobile, such as a Tabaxi or an Aarakocra (not in the players handbook)
@solemn light any suggestions on a race for a sorcerer?
i have a question
I have made 2 monks (each characters from something) and they play quite well. They are more of support units than anythin.
Any you like. For now, just pick one that seems interesting to you.
hit me up
well I tried that
Half-orc Sorcerer works just fine.
is there a class that has longer reach than other classes
but someone denied it
like a monk that uses flicker jabs
Bugbear, but it's not in the PHB and free to use races.
Some rogues and spell casters do this
alright if you say so, I'm just not too sure what to think now lol
There is a specific merging of subclasses that is great at this, but subclassing is not advised for new players
For a good movement like character, a very mobile monk or rogue
No, they were removed a while ago.
I dont think so, but I can direct message you
It wasn't denied, but it was pointed out it doesn't work like you think it does.
Also remember for racial benefits, many DMs now allow 'floating' ASI (ability score increases). Half-orcs don't have to be +2 strength, +1 constitution. But best ask your DM. And even if it is +2 Strength, that doesn't mean that's wasted.
that'l work
Ok
that one was a half-joking kinda thing lol, thanks for clearing it up tho

Overall the basic rules and the Handbooker helper videos are a great resource to start with.
It's just that sorcerers as Charisma based spell casters don't benefit from strength as much.
And all classes have weapon profeciencies you can see under their features. For sorcerer they have:
Weapons: Daggers, darts, slings, quarterstaffs, light crossbows
So you'd be using those weapons if any (most likely casting spells instead)
Do you mean multiclassing?
yeah im smart
If you want to practice making characters, feel free to use the dndbeyond character creator.
For stats use standard array and point buy, as that can provide a more feasible build and GMs generally don't accept pre-rolled stats.
what if I used a quarterstaff that I can cast some kind of transform spell to use a bow and arrow for a bit more long ranged attacks?
You'd use spells for long range attacks.
You might be more interested in Warlock
They have more weapon capabilities, and while their main bread and butter is casting eldritch blast (a cantrip, which is a spell you can cast repeatedly), and are a little tougher than Sorcerers, but don't have as many spells.
warlock.. sounds interesting
I'd recommend taking the time to read the basic rules>
Particularly https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons to build a basic understand of how the mechanics work.
That way you have a basis for bringing your character ideas to life.
if you're more of a visual learner, check out the handbooker helper videos in the bot post above.

Warlock Hexblade isn't in the basic rules, but it is a subclass that focuses on empowering a weapon to use as their main attack and focus, with spells as extra which seems to be more what you'd interested in.
The free to use warlock is the Fiend warlock, but you can always test that out first.
What should I do now ???????

I keep seeing these things about some kind of pact
Kk thanks
Pick a class that seems fun for you and go from there.
Warlocks make deals with more powerful beings who will give them power and teach them skills. Those are their pacts.
what if I just the demon lord thing I make a pact with is just really hot lmao 💀
☠️
If bro makes a pact with some demon like that idk what to say bro
wait hold on lemme cook
Might want to move the discussion to #character-discussion
then I could do like a bunch of favors or whatever for "pleasure" 💀💀
how bad of an idea would it be for me to dm for other noobs
oh no this is a joke lmaoo
probably bad but it might be funny
That would be a discussion with your group and DM. Adult content or even just flirting and romance is something to be covered in a 'session 0' to make sure everyone is comfortable with it occuring.
Not a bad idea at all. You'd all be learning together.
it was a joke lmaooo 💀💀
very interesting tho
ok i’m gonna do it lol i got some time
For now, I recommend trying to make that Half-orc warlock and see if you can figure out from the step-by-step rules and the dndbeyond character maker how to make a PC (player character). Ask questions here if you get stuck.
do you have several months or years of time tho?
The hobby needs more DMs! If you want to talk about the finer points of running the game, we have #dm-discussion for those conversations.
ok
Best for now just to get a handle on the rules and how characters are made, then you can play about more with ideas using those basic rules.
It can be done rather well.
I'd recommend running a pre-written adventure designed to be completed in a single session.
This allows you to learn the mechanics, while not having to worry about creating npcs, world building, or figuring out combat balance.
i got a few weeks lol
Plenty of time to be ready for a single session adventure.
Dndbeyond provides one for free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/itsi/intro-to-stormwreck-isle
ok cool was just gonna ask
I'd recommend starting by reading this guide as well: https://howtogm.guide/

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Isn't phandelver free now too? I had bought it before it going free I think
Lost mines of phandelver
It used to be free but isn't available to claim on DDB if you haven't already.
Oh OK so it's not free anymore
You can't purchase it on DDB either, but the printed copies are available. I'm not sure if other digital platforms have it or not.
Oh really you can't buy it on dnd beyond now? It was the first adventure on dnd beyond that I bought
I still haven't ran it though, I was thinking on running it and then switching to the spelljammers adventure
Thanks for the link I went ahead and claimed it
hello! anyone have any tips for someone who's newer to D&D? i've played once before, but forgot how it works, and playing online is newer to me.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the first four chapters of the basic rules.
If you are more of a visual learner, the handbooker helper videos are a great resources.
Afterwards see if you can make a character on dndbeyond's character builder or with a pencil and paper.
All are provided in the links of the bot post above.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
If you do make a character make sure your DM is okay with it for whatever game they want to run
another question, what do they mean by "Equipment and Wealth" i don't really understand that part
When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this section. See the Starting Wealth by Class table to determine how much gold you have to spend.
What part do you not understand?
i understand now! thanks!
wait so could i be rick?

Here's a good read: https://howtogm.guide/
Lost mines of Phandelver is now considered to be the first half of the larger adventure “Phandelver and Below.” If you did not claim the content while it was free on D&D Beyond then you will need to purchase the full adventure
Have a session zero to establish expectations and boundaries.
Remember that communication is key to preventing and resolving any potential issues.
Understand that you don't need to have everything memorized, make a judgment call you believe is fair when you don't know a rule and revisit after the session so things are clear moving forward.
I don't see that on dnd beyond but that's interesting to know there is more to the adventure
Hello I'm new to DND and my friends are going to host a campaign and it's going to be in an underground facility (probably, my friend is trying not to give a lot of information about the campaign)and the characters are locked to humans only, but they can be in different time periods like old medical or cyberpunk style, the only restriction is that It can't be today modern. And I finally made up my mind for a character, my character is being a mixture of different games, 1 vector (a more level based parkour game by Nekki) for his seemingly never-ending running capabilities also for his jumping capabilities(note that throughout of Vector, he runs through a lot of glass and being shirtless, so he is really immune to glass) haak(a metrovania like game from blingames), and the Shadow fights series(mainly sf2, 4 samurai look)
My character's name is going to be called vector haak (cheesy name, I don't have any other) my character is from the years 2,800, in a future realistic post apocalypse world where the government had gotten total control over its people theirs is a rebellion (vector haak is in that rebellion), before the apocalypse, vector used to work in a office that seem to mind control their employees. Vector breaks the mind control and breaks free from the neverending 9-5...... By jumping out a window of a literal skyscraper, the security guards are notified that one of the employers,TR8(code name) had breached out of the working facility and their is a very long chase happens. Vector finally escapes the big corp that has been trying to neutralize for multiple marathon lengths and settles with a rebellion. After the apocalypse almost all the people are basically controlled by the government and big corporations. (like a cyberpunk 2077 In a wasteland or laser hawk) in the game HAAK, haak find a 'power gloves' that can be as a hand as a semi hidden blade (like a light weight short sword) that can be also be as a harpoon/grappling hook.
That backstory now2long.
That is an entire essay damn I really need to do that for school
Oh thank you!
This channel is more for help learning the rules and answering basic questions about the game. If you want help working on your character, #character-discussion would be the best channel to post in. Though I might recommend using something like pastebin or google docs if you want to share your entire backstory, instead of typing it in chat
Oh, thanks
I guess I'll just go copy and paste I guess but thank you for letting me know
Does anybody have a suggestion on action economy?
How do you mean?
I don’t understand your question
The term “action economy” refers to the balance of abilities that are actions, bonus actions, and reactions, as well as how many turns each side has in a given combat. It’s not something you “make decisions” on
Using the wrong term... My fault. Understanding monster difficulty to player level and making sure monsters are not too overpowering or underpowered for the players.
That would be challenge rating (CR)
And more for #dm-discussion than this channel!
alright thank you
To to answer this within the scope of newcomers.
To quote Zee Bashew "Action Economy in general the side with the most turns wins."
is there a way to be rick
What "rick" are you referring to?
So I’m kinda new to D&D does anyone have any tips on how to start?
Well I say new but I’ve been in 1 campaign but I still don’t understand lots of the game

Oh I completely misread the instructions then
Hey, could someone help me out?
A brown bear wild shape has this multiattack.
Does that mean 1d20+1d8+4 and 1d20+2d6+4? And it can be done every time?
I ask because it seems unbalanced. Too much damage.
A brown bear has one Bite attack and one Claws attack.
The bite has an attack of +6 and does 1d8+4 damage.
The claws has an attack of +6 and does 2d6+4 damage.
You DON'T roll the d20 for damage, only for the attack rolls.
So when you roll to attack, roll a d20 +6
and if you hit, you roll the other dice for damage
Thanks. Wow. That's a huge help.
One other thing. I tried creating an elf on DndBeyond and the character sheet says every elf has "proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow", but when I roll online for longsword damage it does not add proficiency bonus. Is that a mistake? Should it be 1d8 + 1 (str) + 2 (proficiency bonus)?
PB is only added to the attack roll, not the damage roll
oh, ok. thanks
How is Hit / DC for a weapon counted?
My druid elf has +3 and my dragonborn palladin +6 for the same weapon.
(Sorry can't find it on google myself.)
It's d20, plus your ability modifier for that weapon (strength for most melee weapons, dexterity for ranged), plus your proficiency bonus (wqhich depends on your level) if you are proficient with that weapon
Assuming both characters are proficient with that weapon and they’re both level 1, the Druid would have +2 (proficiency) and +1 (stat), while the Paladin would have +2 (proficiency) and +4 (stat)
So what's the difference between paid and non paid games
Like, outside from the obvious? Not much, and it'll still depend on the DM like any game, really. Different people have different ways of doing things
greetings
Helo
how are you doing? 🙂
Greetings Nero. I'm great, have a game today. How are you?
I have one more question about druids.
Every time you transform into a wild shape you get full wild form HP, right? (Even if a human form is hurt or if a wild form was hurt previously.) Then when turning back to a human/elf you get back HP you had as a human/elf previously. And you can only turn into wild shape twice before rest.
Is that all correct?
And if you die as a wild shape do you have to turn back into elf/human or can you do death saves?
Correct. You'll just take on the form of the beast with full hit points, and then afterwards return to your normal from at the hit points they were at the time you wild shaped
When you die in the wildshape form, you just return to your normal form, though any excess damage your wild shape form took goes into your normal form, so if that excess damage is enough to reduce you to zero, you'll then be knocked out and roll your death saves from there on
Hi I just made a character in dnd beyond so what now?
Why not share it in #character-discussion ?
Make sure it's set to Public first, and please use the sharing link, not the PDF.
Hi, all! I’m looking to get back into D&D after some time away. Unfortunately I’ve run into some awful online groups, lots of drama and cliquishness.
Is this a pretty accepting place? Do you all host games around here? Thanks so much!
We don't host games on this server directly, but you can find info on #find-a-game about making or looking for posts for finding other players / DMs on the respective channels 👍
Thanks!

@upbeat river I’m also new. I’ve been exploring #find-a-game, what’s your ideas for a character?
@carmine sentinel I would like to build a fighter who fights with 2 katanas and on higher levels can deal lots of damage
I’ve made a character on DND Beyond and it was really straightforward. Half elven ranger, with a dry sense of humour and a preference for shady spots to hide, inspired by my BG3 character
Sounds cool! Have you thought about races?
My subclass is going to be Gloomstalker, but I’ ve been thinking about how cool it would be to have a forest companion/wolf

Help
I was just talking about my experience in dnd, and now most of my discord friend's want to play dnd 😭
It is weird because I have extensive experience playing tons of rpg's but my usual friendgroup never gave DnD a shot
We've got the opposite fate 😭
I have played pathfinder and every warhammer rpg game, but never DnD xD

i know when post other day it said once every 8 days
sorry if this is wrong channel. Didnt know where to put it
I'm gon a keep it straight, I do not learn very well reading a list of rules, or at least a complex set of rules, and I was wondering if there was a group I could join that'd be willing to help me learn. Most experience I've had with dnd was bg3 though I don't know how close it actually is
I believe it's one post per period regardless of what channel you post in.
The hanbooker helper series can help with that.
Videos are in the bot post above.

With the basic rules, you can take your time reading the first 4 characters as that covers the rules and options you have available for character creation.
thanks
As for finding a group, you have a few options.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
Other options
You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.

The hadbooker Helper videos also help.
Could a pet theoretically double as a staff?
LIke, the pet just turns into a staff and vice versa
Rules are written no.
Okay so basically I just need the DM to sign off on the idea
The idea of a pet owl or something being able to turn into a staff and vice versa is a pretty cool idea ngl
And also has the hidden benefit of my staff being able to return to me independently of me or someone else, which can be pretty useful, if highly situational
With the new Alpha/Beta features, can an Icewind Dale campaign be set up using D&DBeyond as a VTT?
That's #homebrew. Talk to your DM.
Haven't tested that out myself but perhaps someone from #ddb-support has and can give you some insight.
Thanks
Hi
Welcome
I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for the past 15 years.
Thank-you
Good to be here.
My friend was the DM so I didn't actually learn a lot about all of the rules.
I take it you are new to 5th edition?

After 15 years I want to learn to be a Dungeon master and learn more about the rules, history, etc.
My friend learned the game in the early 80s with the first edition.
I have a few questions.
The bot post above has resources to help you get started.
I should note the rules and mechanics have changed from earlier editions.
Which version is good to start with?
The current version is 5th edition.
With the fee basic rules in the bot post above cover.
My friend only knows the first one but I think if I spend a lot of time learnin that it will limit my ability to play with others.
My recommendation is to read the free basic rules to get started.
I do want to purchase the books as I prefer reading hard copy.
Ok
I will start with those rules but I do want to study to be a Dungeon Master.
The server has #dnd-elder-editions to discuss older editions of dnd.
Are those rules from the 5th edition?
Yes, that is the current version.
Ok
Would I still benefit from reading the books?
My friend told me I should read the DM Guide, Player's Handbook and Monster Manual.
By the way, I really appreciate your guidance.
You can.
Though best approach would be to start with the free basic rules to act as a foundation.
Then try out a pre-written adventure.
Other question.
My friend moved away out of state and I don't like to drive a lot except to work.
Are there easy ways to play online with my friend and others?
I was used to maintaining all of the sheets in person with my friend so not sure how well it will work remotely.
Would it be better to stick with paper based sheets or are there online sheets that make it easier to maintain the character sheets, campaign maps, etc.
Yes, people nowadays use a virtual table top.
This allows you play on a gridded map and share dice roll results.
?tag new online
There are different tabletops available now.
It's just a matter of picking one that is right for you based on the desired learning curb, content available, and budget.
You have been very helpful. I can talk a few more minutes then have to run some errands.
Do those virtual table tops also maintain character sheets, etc?
Some do
Happy to help
I will be back in the future . I will start with the free basic rules and then find a virtual table top.
That's what I said
This is one tabletop option to give you a basic idea: https://youtu.be/fg27kxWKo2c
This option is by dndbeyond, a company owned by Wizards of the Coast, the owners of D&D.
Results will vary depending on what you are looking for.

So how is adventurers league different from a regular campaign
Adventure's League is a community style game where you may play with different groups and DMs
A regular campaign would be the same players and DM over an extended period
AL you drop in for an one-shot that uses RAW rules.
This recent post goes over what Adventurers League is, how it works, and how to find AL games: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
This server even has events posted in #1050206572535623690
For now it seems that I may be more suited to an Adventurer's league.
I may just be able to hop onto random sessions.
I will create a campaign eventually for my friend but other than that may not have regular sessions.
That's fine, a lot of people got their start in Adventurers League.
It's a pretty good way to meet other players and form a long term dnd group.
Plus you can play in person and online AL games.
Though I should note that when creating a character, you need to certain guidelines to ensure they are Adventures League legal.
Helloooo! I am new to DNDish. I know some of the basics a bit but still got a few questions.
Ok
I will still do a campaign with my friend but think the Adventurer's League may be more suitable otherwise at this time.
What are they?
Question about ability modifiers. Half Elf Rogue - have a +2 on one ability plus two +1 on two others. If I have a 15 dexterity base plus the +2, would I then add another +2 for ability modifier? That would be 19 Dexterity
Pretty sure you have to choose different skills
Oh ok..one I haven't modified due to race/class?
Oh wait no I misunderstood. You actually can do that.
Your racial bonuses have to be added to different stats
When first creating your character. Assuming that was the original question
It’s +2 to the score, not the modifier
You would have 17 Dex
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
This is definitely my first character roll. I'm not sure I understand. Racial bonus is the +2 to one ability and +1 to another, and + 1 to another [for Half Elf] right?
Yes
So my rolled Dex was 15. To that I add my +2 for ability modifier making it 17. To that can I add the racial bonus of +2?
So when creating a character you first set your base ability scores.
Usually the race that you pick will allow you to increase your ability score further. Usually increasing one ability score by 2 and a second ability score by one.
So take your base ability score of 15 for dexterity, you add your racial bonus of +2 for dexterity to increase it to 17
Are these ability scores good for a Paladin?
Str: 16
Dex: 11
Con: 17
Int: 8
Wis: 8
Cha: 16
This Hanbooker Helper video also helps explain it: https://youtu.be/WoV5iM7peOg
Half elf paladin btw
The modifier doesn’t increase the score. It is derived from the score, and modifies the relevant rolls
You would have a 17 total, giving you a modifier of +3
Yep, this handbooker helper video is a good referece: https://youtu.be/GMsg3QskvtU?si=yuFGZL5YGjHW-E1s
Keep in mind having negative modifiers is fine to have because DND is a team based game, any weaknesses that a single character has are generally covered by your party.
Pretty good, yeah
I guess a better question is will this build work for adventurers league
Personally I would swap Dex and Wis, but it’s fine as is
Since that’s gonna be my first real in person game
The scores will work yes
Did you use standard array or point buy?
One thing I’m a little confused on. How do you determine what your starting equipment is
Point buy
Ppl use point buy? I use Rolled
Your class will tell you what your starting equipment is
Rolled is probably the least popular method at this point
Your class and background determine your starting equipment and your starting gold.
Y
Only time I’ve ever used the rolled system for getting ability scores is with Baldurs gate one character creation lol
For context, they are making a character for D&D Adventuers League which requires players to use standard array or pointbuy.
Main reason being it gears towards better balance for adventures.
Because rolled can very unpredictable and unbalanced
Point buy offers more control for unique, focused builds, while keeping better stat balance
Rolled is so much more fun, either you get great rng and get great or balanced stats, or get screwed over and have terrible stats, the unpredictability is it's best feature
It’s more fun for you
Ok thank you. Appreciate it
Different people have different ideas of fun
Thank you!
I mean, using it with friends is very fun, because either everyone is op, balanced, terrible, or there's a spread
But when in public not so much
ive been trying to learn about DnD and ive got some basics now, though i'd like someone to DM a campaign while teaching me more, ive already got a concept for a character but i had some questions about the character sheet, i dont mind if he brings other people along
for you
The latter option can be fun for experienced players but for newer players having a character that is bad what they are supposed to be good at can lead to an unfun experience.
Kind of like playing a game with stick drift and lag.
I had a question about the equipment section of the character sheet
Yes, I'm not disagreeing, but if everyone in your campaign does it, it's more chaotic, which for me and my friends = fun

Yeah, okay
I see 5 bullet points for equipment and they are labeled:
CP
SP
EP
GP
PP
What do these mean
Those are currency
Yes
Copper, silver, electrum, gold, and platinum pieces
I didn't clue it until you said it
10 copper to one silver, 10 silver to one gold, 10 gold to one platinum
Ah ok
Electrum is less common but it’s 5 silver to one electrum and 2 electrum to one gold iirc
Weird currency
So for my starting hit points it’s 10 + my charisma modifier if I’m reading the handbook correct?
Constitution not charisma
So I believe 10+3 for you
So my hit points for level one would be 13
+3 con mod is definitely not below average
Yeah
+2 is average, I would say
Generally speaking, you'll have much better results if you take a proactive approach and try to learn as much as you can on your own.
The main reason being that DMs are responsible for setting up the campaign, which takes time, resources, and effort.
So taking the time to learn on your own can a good way to show a DM that you are respectful of their time and work they put into a campaign.
If are having trouble learning on your feel free to ask for help here.
There are also D&D events dedicated to teaching people how to play.
i understand, i'll try to get a fleshed out character and learn about the lore then find a DM, you mind me asking questions in direct messages?
where could i find that?
I recommend asking me here because quite often others will have the same questions, and answering here provides a bigger impact for others.
alright
what are the aspects i should totally learn to actually start playing? like important stuff
and is there limits to your main stats? how do i know my character's balanced
This server has events listed in the events section.
I also recommend trying out D&D Adventurers League because the adventures for level 1 characters are designed for for new players to pick up the basics.
This post on dnd beyond goes over what Adventurers League is, how it works, and this server event has channels dedicated to this style of play: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

At a bare minimum, I’d recommend learning:
- these common terms
- what to do on your turn
- how your character’s own abilities work
alright then i've got a week vacation to learn then
If you’re using standard array or point buy, you shouldn’t have to worry about it too much.
I often recommend the character creation guideline from Adventurers League, linked in my message above.
As that is a good frame of reference for determining if your character is balance.
For now, read the basic rules and decide on which class you want to play.
The Handbooker Helper video series provide great pointers for building a character for each class.
Either of those will give you a range of scores between 8-17 — some high, some low.
Rolling has a lot more variability.
That could give you numbers anywhere from 3-20.
What spells can Paladin get at level 2
Any 1st level spells on the Paladin spell list
You prepare the list of paladin spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the paladin spell list. When you do so, choose a number of paladin spells equal to your Charisma modifier + half your paladin level, rounded down (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Well I guess I don’t need to have them right now anyway because I’m lvl 1 lol
Yeah
You'll level up quickly.
In Adventurers League, you have the option of leveling up after you finish an adventure, which is a single 2 - 4 hour session.
Under the attacks section, do I just need to put my great sword? (My starting weapon)
Are you doing this on dnd beyond or with pencil or paper?
I’m doing it on paper, I have a character sheet
Then yes.
both work
I have made a few on dnd beyond for practice
They do.
Just needed the clarification because sometimes people forget to click the checkbox for their weapons in the app/websitre to have their weapon attacks appear.
If that’s the only attack you plan on using, then yes
Hey I've never once played DND and am looking for people to play with any pointers on how to find people

Ok I have my character sheet made
So I guess I’ll bring this to the adventurers league game Wednesday
And my handbook
is there anyway i can make a character other than dnd beyond? i wanna make something unique but i dont want to have to drop 90$ on books
Nice, going to an in person game?
You absolutely don’t have to buy a book to make a character
D&D Beyond is just a tool for character sheets and digital books. You only have access to the free playable races and classes found in the free Basic Rules.
Yeah this will be my first in person game. I’ve played a few on discord, but I’m really looking forward to the in person experience
You can use fillable PDF character sheets.
im ngl i dont know how to fill out a actual sheet, plus most people play on beyond and you cant import pdf files i dont think
im fairly new and my only experience is online
Basic rules provides 9 races, 12 classes, and one subclass from each class.
^ you don’t have to pay for the basics
You either buy the physical/digital books to get access to the stuff not found in the free Basic Rules or you join a campaign that the DM shares their (physical/digital) books.
With D&D Beyond you can buy individual playable classes/races for $1.99 each.
i know that, but i find that very restrictive, maybe im not very creative but i always looked at dnd as a TTRPG with a bunch of options but i find dndbeyond to be very restrictive
atleast the free version
It's restrictive because the game isn't free. WotC is a for-profit company and they make money selling books.
yep If you want to build something specific from other source books, there is a budget friendly approach.
If you do use D&D Beyond, you could alternatively buy just the character options you need instead.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
If you're new to D&D then just start with the free Basic Rules so you get to know the game. There is no rush to spend money on something you haven't tried yet.
If you want access to D&D books while on a budget, I high recommend getting them from your local library.
You'll be amazed at how many dnd books they have.
If you join a campaign that uses D&D Beyond, the DM will probably share their digital books to make characters (I do that for my players).
That’s how I got started. 💯
yeah, side note for new players.
Visit your local library, they have some awesome resources.
This includes 3d printers, which you can use to build your minis.
i would play irl but the one game store in my town is 20+ only as my town is pretty rural
How to fill out an actual sheet is explained in the basic rules
You could use it to fill out a pdf sheet
Even if an online group mainly uses dnd beyond I’m sure they could work around someone using a pdf
Some libraries even host D&D groups.
Also, DMs can and often will share content they own with players in their campaigns on dnd beyond
my dosnt, i already checked. online is really the only option for me so thats why it kinda sucked learning i had to pay somewhere close to 90$ for books. which i get its a free website and books and subscriptions are the only way to keep the website up, but as a sophomore in HS its just a little steep to pay
You can buy subclasses, races, and other content individually for 2 dollars each
Again, you don't need to spend money on the game you haven't played yet. Find a table to play at before worrying about making specific characters.
Most of the financial burden of buying books is typically on the DMs (one reason there aren't that many DMs compared to players...).
You don't ned to spend $90s on books.
As the other mentioned you can can use what's available from the free basic rules, buy specific content you want to own bit by bit over time, or wait to find a group and see what resources they can share. As mentioned, some people will have content sharing enabled for their campaign groups.
i have played the game online with some friends, ive done 3 2-3 month long campaigns, and a couple oneshots and twoshots. i just feel like im limited by what i can choose. i will prob buy the books eventually but it does ruin some of the game for me, but i get thats a me issue. im not really here asking for a guaranteed fix to my issue because i already know how to fix it. just here to vent a little
Realistically a single race and subclass will last you months.
Again, you can spend $2 to buy a specific individual playable race or class (or $10 for a bundle) instead of an entire book.
Plus, any money you do spent removes the total cost of the entire book, and sales stack on top of that.
There isn't any more we can suggest to you.
The bundle is a heck of a deal.
You can get the 25 subclasses from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
You can also get the 33 races from Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
Each set is $10 USD, so $20 USD total.
And today is the last day for the spring sale at D&D Beyond.
Still if someone doesn't have the budget for some of content that's fine.
As Oldman mention, you can always use fillable pdfs.
The free basic rules teach you how fill a character sheet, since the game started a paper and pencil game.
And local libraries will have quite a few books to check out.
Should I get the sourcebooks physically or digitally on d&d beyond? (bit worried that I just wasted money on getting the players handbook and monster manual in physical form when I could have gotten them on d&d beyond)
It depends whether you'll be playing online or in person more.
fair enough
Like mentioned, local libraries tend to hold quite a few dnd books.
idk if I can really find anywhere to play in person (which tbf I haven't really tried yet) so I might try online
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
gotcha, might try looking at a library next
Definitely check them out from your local library, it's a great way to help you decide which books you personally want to buy.
mainly just need to get tasha's, xanathar's, and Monsters of the Universe atp (not that I really need them... maybe)
You can hold off on buying the players handbook as the updated players handbook is set to be released on September 17, 2024
wait they're releasing an updated handbook?
Yes. they are going to be releasing an updated rule set for the 50th anniversary.
It's updated 5E ruleset. You're not obligated to buy the new books. You can still use the ones you have now.
ah ok
It's more of a "patch" than a new edition.
gotcha, feels better knowing that I can still use the normal handbook

What is a DC check?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityChecks
DC= difficulty Challenge, is the number you must meet or beat on a Check or save in order to pass.
So if the DC is 15 for a strength (atheletics) check, then the PC must roll 1d20+ Strength modifier + (Proficiency bonus if proficient in atheletics) and get 15 or higher to succeed on the challenge.
hey, just wandering how grappling works exactly, building a plasmoid because they seem like silly guys and saw the have advantage on it
hi there, curious if an arcane trickster character can learn misty step as a cantrip?
Not as a cantrip but as a 8th lvl trickster you could choose it
Hi, short question. I found that there is a site where you can calculate money. Is there something similar one can use to add and substract items with the appropriate weight?
DND Beyond can track the total weight of your equipment, if that's what your asking.
Thats perfect.
I saw that they have an app but never made a character since my race is locked behind a buyable book which i own in real life. Didnt really wanna buy it double so i havent used it so far.
If you don't want to track your weight by hand or with a spreadsheet, it's there. You can even make up a character with the same Strength to see how heavy the load is.

If a module in the book says the story is to be played by four players does it mean three players can't play it or is it just more suitable for four of them but three can play?
3 can play it but then you have to change around encounter difficulties at least
and probably change other things depending on the story
I see, so it's simply more suitable for four of them three is ok too with some changes. But I think I will have a look at some other story then cuz as a newbie idk what changes to make.
I'm having a hard time thinking of a scenario that demands four characters and no less. Maybe some kind of complex puzzle?
Yeah, like, why would four players be a must?? Idk why it was written there but I didn't read the story since it was specified it's for 4 players and my group is 3 so I can't think of a reason why it needs to be for 4
Most likely for encounter balance.
And just when I thought I'm decided. Now I will have to find some other book most likely because idk how to adapt the story and encounters to suit 3 players
The story hangs that hard on four characters?
Encounter balance is easy, take one or two out, or reduce the HP of the opposition. I'm really curious what's driving the specific need for four characters in the story, though. #dm-discussion ?
"A story for four to six characters." is written above the story. If it was possible to play the story with three charas it would be mentioned, no? Yeah discussion section might be best for this sort of problem.
Have you actually looked though the content?

Convenient
After getting to know the game basics, you find a group of people and start playing
The recommended player count is almost always a guide. If you tweak whatever encounters you need, I strongly doubt there'll be any meaningful impact on the non-combat sections if you go with less.
Cool
I didn't read all of it
Three players should be able to get through it alright.
It'll just be a little harder than if there were four players.
I’m making my first spellcaster (wild magic sorcerer) and I’m not really sure how many spells I get
The Sorcerer Table shows how many spells you know based on your level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer#TheSorcererTable
Assuming you're starting at level one, you'd know four cantrips and two 1st-level spells.
oh alr! thank you

Okay, thank you.
Question: I will run some goblins, and I am a little confused about how the "Disengage" action actually works.
I understand what it does (doesn't let enemies have opportunity attacks on you for the next turn), but if I do the following set of moves (as a goblin): move 9ft, attack, disengage (as a bonus action), does this mean I simply stay in front of the guy I attacked or what?
Disengage is pointless unless you move away from the creature on that turn.
Oh ok, perfect. Thanks for clearing this! At least a goblin won't die in a very dumb way in my campaign
Or will he? I could actually do that on purpose one time
That is an option.
What kind of wizard subclasses would combo well with Graviturgy? I'm leaning towards Transmutation or Abjuration, but I'm not 100% sure.
That’s more a topic for #character-discussion or possibly even #optimization.
oh really? my bad
Graviturgist, probably 😅
Isn't graviturgy a subclass in itself
And you do only get one subclass per class.
Well yes, but the dm in my campaign is homebrewing it and letting a lot of freedom when it comes to classes and subclasses
So I was just wondering
so he is allowing you to pick 2 subclasses?
I think so
Ah, if you’re talking homebrew, then that’s definitely a topic for another channel.
Though your gut feeling is right on the money, I'd agree with Transmutation or Conjuration.
Chronurgy and become a space-time wizard ;)
hii!! i was so unaware there was a dnd server this big damn

Thank you! I'm a little overwhelmed by the websites like DnDbeyond and roll20 and trying to figure them all out with navigating them. I'll figure it out eventually
No. You can either shove or grapple. There are no general rules to throw other creatures (outside of specific sub-class feature).
Thanks again for the help yesterday. Figured out what I was doing wrong in the first place. 1) putting two extra racial bonus in Dex instead of where it was supposed to go. 2) imperfect understanding of ability mod.
understanble, thanks!
mb i typo
If my character is mainly Lawful Good is it ok that I picked one ideal that falls in the chaotic good category
I took the freedom ideal for one of my choices, every thing else was from lawful good
Don't be bound by alignment. Alignment doesn't define your character but the other way around.
Concentrate on your character's Personality, Bonds, Ideals, and Flaws.
Hello looking for an online dnd game my name is chell and I’m completely new
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
There might be some variation, yeah, but learning the fundamentals is still an important first step.

Hey, question for all you knowledgable people. one of my players took a magical item from a dead npc, it has a bunch of abilities if you are attuned to it, but it is also cursed. Would the player know they have to attune to the item to use it and would they typically know if it is cursed? is it the case with all magical items?
The first step is typically to identify the item.
They can do that by spending a short rest focused on the item.
That may or may not reveal the curse, depending on the item.
The Identify spell can also be used for a quicker result.
Alternatively, attuning to the item would also reveal the items’ properties.
But attuning before identification runs the risk of getting cursed.
I tried to make my first character for when I get into it and have people to play with(currently mostly at home), anyone open to help me out and give advice for how to flesh them out more? I got a doc full of notes related to the attempt and a drawing of the character
alright cool, they know what the item is already, but to full understand it they would need to identify the item?
#character-discussion can help with that!
The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an item’s properties. Alternatively, a character can focus on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the character learns the item’s properties, as well as how to use them.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/treasure#IdentifyingaMagicItem
thanks so much, i think i need to spend a bit more time readying the dungeon master's guide.
Thank you so much! I'll pm you the info and design. It's not much since I don't even have a beginner's kit, but it's something
Hi
Not untill its too late. they have to attune first.
?tag new online
@halcyon grove The above guide might also be of some help to you
Thank you
can anyone explain the hit dice to me, im confused by using them up. Does that mean per turn you can use a hit dice to heal and can you use the same for an attack or how do they work?
No idea where to even begin learning, but I am interested regardless.
its a real complex world ey, exciting though lots of possibility's
I see I see
At first I was interested in DMing but immediately realized playing a campaign or two might be my best bet,
Hit dice are first used to determine your max HP.
You can also spend them during a short rest to recover HP, and regain them during a long rest.
Hit Dice determines the number of dice to roll when determining your character's hit points.
You can use hit dice during your short rest to regain hit points. For example, your PC is level 3 so they have 3 Hit Dice and during a long rest you can use up to 3 Hit Dice to regain hit points back. During a long rest, you regain half of your maximum Hit Dice.
so im using starter set and max is predefined so i dont need hit dice to figure it out?
You should still understand your hit die size, which depends on your class.
Your hit points at level 1 are the max value of that die plus your constitution modifier.
At level 1, all characters have max hp
ahh i get you

so they are used in character creation to determine
so then throughout play say take the stormwreck isle first scenario with the sea men if you fight them and take damage you can use 1 hit die to regain health in a short rest after the fight or can you rest during ?
Can you rest during what? The fight itself?
ya if there is other players
Short rest is one hour long.
Your enemies likely won’t let you sit and catch your breath for an hour.
how do you usally determine length of time just make up?
Combat is often less than 1 minute (each round is six seconds and most fights are 2 to 4 rounds long).
A short rest is always an hour at minimum.
The DM tells you how much time has passed in game.
(Resting longer than an hour is possible, but doesn’t grant any additional benefits.)
ah ok
so then a hit dice can be used in short break + const or jus the hit die alone and then long break to regain it to heal again
Ok to save time is this to help dnd players or to find ppl online and join a campaign
During a short rest, you can use your Hit Dice to regain hit points.
During a long rest you regain all of your hit points back and half of your maximum Hit Dice.
This channel is to help new players to D&D learn the rules.
Check #find-a-game if you want to find a game to join.
i get it now thank you
levelling up then i want to go down the xp route using what i found to be kastark calculator is this the best way?
I don’t know what a kastark calculator is.
But when your players defeat a monster, they divide that monster’s XP equally.
where might i find some xp references for fair levelling
XP is most commonly earned by defeating monsters.
That monster’s statblock will specify how much XP that monster is worth.
Then whenever a character’s total XP reaches one of the amounts shown here, they level up.

I am completely new to this....my question is do I really need all these dice or can I use d&d beyonds setup where it comes with all the dice but it all virtual. Thanks in advance.
perfect i see now, thank you
You’ll need dice of some kind.
Whether any specific kind of dice are acceptable depends on the group.
If any one wants a good buffed background 5e than pick gladiator
Oh no kidding? See i didn't know the difference.... And what should I purchase first I know I need the players handbook but is there anything else?
Told ya I'm a noob
@smoky adder thanks for all the advice.
If you're looking to join as a player, then I'd recommend (in no particular order):
- The Player's Handbook
- Xanathar's Guide to Everything
- Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
- Monsters of the Multiverse
Those will give you the broadest selection of character options.
Awesome ...yes I don't think I'm ready to be DM.
FYI, today's the last day of the D&D Spring Sale:
http://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1679-save-up-to-40-on-books-and-dice-with-d-ds-spring
I created a character on d&d beyond... But haven't used him yet.
That's awesome so this starter set, is it worth getting or should I just get the player hand book for now?
Ya that one.
It’s a great choice for beginner groups, but ultimately it’s the DM who should be the one reading it.
So if you want to try being a DM, or if your DM is looking for a good introductory experience, then go for it.
Nope not right now I just wanna play lol
how did i approve speeds, is a zombie for example 20ft a round?
A monster’s speed will be listed in its statblock.
Is there any way I could sit in for a round just to see how everything works?
I'm also completely new btw
and thats per round?
On your turn, you can move a distance up to your speed and take one action.

So yes, effectively.
There’s plenty of games streaming on Twitch and YouTube that are already open-invite.
thanks
I'm looking for a group of people to hold my hand since I have only played one other time and I know basically none of the rules. any tips or tricks you can recommend to help point me in the right direction
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
awesome thank you! I really appreciate it I will do that! I have seen a few of critical role's games and I really enjoyed them the holiday one with the elves is my favorite!
Keep in mind matt mercer (just like any dm) has table rules that are either not in the actual rules, and/or alter the rules as written.
The dm of the games you'll play may have different rules than he, different rules than what's written, or they may stick quite strictly to the rules.
I'm playing an echo knight with intention of multiclassing into gloomstalker ranger. What feats do you guys reccomend I take?
Alert would be good for instantly going into combat + it has other bonuses
I do keep rolling bad initiative rolls...
ive been taking a break from dnd for a while and really want to get back into it, but the thought of dnd is still exhausting to me, anyone got any tips on how to recover from burnout faster?
I did very minimal research, but sources say Knight of the Crown (+1 str, dex, OR con + a rally that works kinda like a bard) and Sharpshooter (Hit behind half and 3/4 cover + sacrifice roll # for damage)
Having something to look forward to is a great way. Being excited for a campaign/one shot or a character you want to make/expirement with might be some good ways to help
If you're new to dnd, you might want to want to hold off on multi-classing.
If you have a decent knowledge of both classes, #optimization can give a ton of great recommendations.
def shadow step if you have an odd number of points in wis as a ranger, to even it out and get some free very fitting spells

You could play one shots and or D&D Adventures League.
That way you can play at a pace that you want.
I know there are differences, but I've played a lot of bg3 so I'm at least baseline familiar and I've talked to some people on here already about what to do going forward. I'm not multiclassing until after level 5 and I'm only planning on 3 levels in ranger. I'll be on here to talk about stuff regularly as I progress through my character so i can make sure I'm making the right decisions
?tag new bg3

I'm not seeing a feat called shadow step when I Google, just the spell
sorry shadow touched
The bot post above can help jump from BG3 to D&D.
One key difference is that D&D characters max out at level 20, while BG# maxes at a lower level.
Generally multi-classing is not recommended to new players because if players don't understand how individual classes work, they can easily create a character that isn't very good with either class' abilities.
Sometimes even resulting in class abilities clashing with each other.
probably ask in #optimization or #character-discussion
but a hand crossbow build with crossbow expert and sharpshooter is a very good ranged build
new to the game as per recomendation of my roomate and would love to have a call with someone experienced with the game to help me get some ideas flowing for a new character

If you are more of a visual learner, the Handbooker Helper series is a great resource to help build your understanding.
idk man i lowkey suck at reading stuff and it helps me a lot to understand things to talk it out with someone
Which is why I recommend the handbooker helper series.
They are short videos that are easy to digest.
i dont mean to be annoying but if you have even 20 minutes it would help a lot, i find that i can sometimes miss certain things with just video overviews
I'm not able to hop on a voice call at the moment but I can point you towards resources that can help you out.
that would mean a lot if you would mind sending me their way!
Here are visual guide that breaks down combat https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
is playing in two campaigns at once fine for a newcommer or nah
should be fine, all it really needs is the ability to keep track of two characters/stories at once, which shouldn't be too hard. You can take notes if you need to
I also recommend listening to the first episode of the Join the Party Podcast:https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
I recommend it because as you listen to this episode, you'll hear someone pop in everyone once in awhile to explain what something is and how a certain mechanic works.
This episode is made specifically for new players.
As cat mentioned, it should be fine.
Taking notes can work wonders for you as well.
Whenever I'm playing multiple campaigns, I like to make a personalized journal for each campaign.
if the whole group are noobs do the race/class picks matter?
like making particularly strong characters
typically it doesnt matter. i used to run beginners' games and for the most part i tried to keep them to PHB for race/subclass so they didnt have to juggle so many books but the point is to go "oo battle master fighter seems cool and satyrs look pretty!"(just an example) and have fun with it. my very first character was a tief paladin with horrible charisma but i found so much fun in it. if you are the new player have a conversation with your DM and ask questions. ask what source books are allowed and if whatever class/race you choose will be okay. in my personal experience ive only struggled with seasoned players minmaxing, but rarely did a speific race/class pairing give me trouble
Generally speaking, most race/class combos will work fine
Even more so if you're using the Tasha's rule that lets you move racial stat bonuses around
what’s tashas rule exactly? and i’m actually going to dm for other noobs so i’m just trying to make sure we don’t make a fatal flaw lol
in the PHB races will have predetermined racial bonuses, with tashas(which is also implemented in MotM) gives you 2 points to put in a stat and 1 point for a different stat
are u saying everyone just gets an extra +2 and +1 to any 2 stats?
Yes, that's the new starting ASI.
ok cool and that’s on top of everything already in the phb? ty again🩷
no, its either a predetermined stat bonus or the "choose your own" to not cause super high stats. (also if the point is to reduce the chance of having an OPPC id recommend doing point buy instead of rolled stats, or standard array to keep it at its simplest form)
i belive PHB still states it in predetermined bonus but there are many people online that have reworded those pages if you want your players to have more choice
PHB wording
(pulled from draconic race description)
Ability Score Increase Your strength score increases by 2, and your charisma score increases by 1.
but you can change it to
Tasha's CoE(page 9) wording
Ability Score Increase [...] You may ignore your Ability Score Increase trait and assign ability score increases tailored to your character. Here's how to do it, take any ability score increase you gain in your race or subrace and apply it to an ability score of your choice. If you gain more than one increase, you can't apply those increases in the same ability score, and you can't increase a score above 20. [...]

Hey guys! Just joined, been playing DND for a month now and loving it! Any recommendations for my wendigo barbarian?
