The benefit of playing online is that there is often some group somewhere in the world playing when you want to, so I wouldn't be too concerned about not lining up with US timezones. I think you'd be surprised how many non-US games exist (I'm Australian, for reference)

I'd suggest looking on this server's #find-a-game channel, Roll20, and the various Facebook pages and subreddits dedicated to LFG (Looking for Group) postings

There's also asynchronous D&D for when finding a block of hours is too difficult.

pretty much what I said to Chonky just above if you're looking for online play

Most tables, regardless if the advertise this fact or not, are open to teaching new players
Just be transparent about your nebishness and you'll be fine

harsh fjord

There are lots of players and fewer DMs. That plus finding a compatible group is not easy. But there are so many avenues to search that it can happen; it just requires time and patience.

topaz karma
#

do i gotta create a character first?

harsh fjord
#

It's probably better if you know how to create a character.

#

Not all DMs have the same methods for character creation, so knowing the process will serve you better than having a specific character that may not be welcome at the table.

Oh, and primary ability score.

Fighters and rogues get more opportunities for feats/stat increases.

# rugged crater howso progression?

The classes each have different features granted by their levels. For example, a 7th level rogue gets Evasion, meaning fireballs go from full or half damage, to half or no damage. Whereas a 7th level barbarian gets feral instinct, for advantage on initiaitive and the ability to overcome surprise via raging.

Hey for skills, if I had a 12 in dexterity but didn't have proficiency in acrobatics would I add a +2. Additionally, if I did have proficiency in acrobatics would I add the proficiency bonus and the ability score modifier to place +4 for acrobatics?

topaz garnet
#

no, a 12 in dexterity is a +1 modifier.

#

12 dex, no prof: +1 to Dexterity checks
12 dex, prof in acrobatics, prof is +2: +3 to Dexterity checks that use Acrobatics proficiency

grave sleet
#

Yeah but if you start to get into the "wrong ways" to play the game, it all comes down to the DM's discretion for each session.

lyric fjord

harsh fjord

The wrong way to play is playing in ways the whole group isn't on board with.

grave sleet

i feel like my only worry about hopping into a game rn is that i have to go do something in the middle of a session

and then i just dont get to play

topaz garnet

And yes those three things I said are very different categories. Check, Save, Attack, are not interchangeable rolls or terminologies, and doing so will lead to a lot of confusion when figuring out the rules or asking about them

harsh fjord
topaz garnet
hybrid nexus
#

It's not like a dagger is less damaging than a sword, both still stab and slash just with a different reach

#

Sometimes it's more effective to use

harsh fjord
# slate phoenix fair

Odds are when you find a group you'll discuss when everyone's free so there are no (or almost no) interruptions.

What is D&D?
How does it work?
  • The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
  • For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
Where do I start?
harsh fjord
hybrid nexus
#

It's easier to aim at vital points or get multiple stabs in

#

I do not tolerate this inequality

#

I love my small daggers

harsh fjord
#

Real-world logic is honestly only going to go so far in a fantasy game.

hybrid nexus
#

Or knives, both are basically the same

golden kraken
topaz garnet
#

But yes, the DND rules are the rules, no matter how silly they get with more real-world logic applied.

#

For a vast majority of things you can find some way to explain it though

#

That and hit points aren't necessarily "meat points"

golden kraken
hybrid nexus
slate phoenix
#

is d&d beyond like this website where literally everything d&d related is on it

hybrid nexus
#

A dagger loses to a sword in a 1v1

#

But its better in alot of other ways

golden kraken
harsh fjord
golden kraken
#

a la, getting hits off on a swordsman

#

however, they also do less damage

topaz garnet
slow hawk
hybrid nexus
#

Dagger does more damage to non humanoids?

topaz garnet
golden kraken
#

it would do less, from a realism perspective

topaz garnet
hybrid nexus
#

May have understood that wrong then

golden kraken
#

definitely

#

"and against big monsters being able to stab deeply is important"

slow hawk
#

Dnd isnt trying to be a reality simulator; its a game with mechanics for balance and simplicity

golden kraken
#

ergo, daggers literally may deal less damage

slow hawk
#

A dagger does 1D4 + modifier damage because thats what the rules say, basically

topaz garnet
#

Also, DND combat isn't you standing around and only swiping once every six seconds
It's an abstraction. It's assumed you're trying to avoid getting hit (your Armor Class), you're looking to hit your enemies at any opportunity (Opportunity Attacks), it's assumed you're in that 'swords clanging' thing until you take the attack action and press the attack against them

golden kraken
#

damage/HP represents more than wounds

golden kraken
topaz garnet
#

for example, one of my favored descriptions of HP is grazing wounds, stamina spent to avoid the blow being lethal, and so on. For example, a Monk might catch a blade from stabbing them, but cut their hand. Then get stabbed at again, be unable to catch it, they got actually stabbed.

"The blow that reduces to 0 is the actually dangerous potentially lethal blow" is my take

#

also, literally in the description of hit points, luck and will to live is included.

#

it's also just "is tougher = more hp"
so it is just an abstraction of a bunch of factors. So to a degree, it's technically a degree of "plot armor" too - you take more punishment because you're a tad luckier.

hybrid nexus
#

Man

golden kraken
#

In a flurry of steel, the evil barron is driven back by Fighter. None of the blows bite flesh, but the baron grows desperate as he loses more and more ground. Unable to do anything more than survive, he's helpless as the Rogue slips out of the shadows behind him and delivers a coup de grace, ending his foul reign along with his life.

hybrid nexus
#

What's luck

#

Is it equal for everyone

#

I haven't read about it yet

harsh fjord
#

Luck isn't an actual stat.

golden kraken
hybrid nexus
golden kraken
#

dnd is very much two discrete systems working in tandem: the mechanics, and the flavor. They're both internally consistent, but translating between the two is practically an art form

harsh fjord
topaz garnet
# hybrid nexus What's luck

It's not an actual stat or anything, it's just one of many things described as a factor for why something would have a lot of hit points. For example, "why can the general take 6 more fireballs than a basic lieutenant" ends up being a "they're tougher and more important" thing

hybrid nexus
#

Weird

golden kraken
# hybrid nexus Then how is it factored in

descriptions. Think about it from a game design perspective:

Realistically speaking, a character is rarely going to be hit, but when they are hit, it's going to be really dangerous- perhaps even fatal. This can be represented by giving attacks really high damage but really low chances to hit, but that feels awful, and makes it hard to gauge who's winning or losing.

So, we abstract the hard-to-quantify mishmash of skill, statistics, and durability into a handy-dandy stat we call "HP".

golden kraken
topaz garnet
#

For example, it'd be easy to flavor a Zombie as actually taking every Hit at face-value, the attack hits them dead-to-rights (heh) but they're just shambling corpsemeat and don't care that much. And just as easy, a Quickling narrowly avoiding attacks that were striking very true.

It's like how you don't just catch the golden snitch immediately - you've got to keep trying, wearing down any luck and chance, until you finally get the one true attempt that works and ends it.

golden kraken
#

it gets finnicky because the system sort of represents the latter bit with the Dexterity Saving Throw (how well you dodge the fireball), just as there is a roll to determine if an attack does any damage at all, but the point still stands

hybrid nexus
topaz garnet
golden kraken
#

the flavor/descriptive side is internally consistent, and the rules work pretty well. They just don't always interact elegantly.

hybrid nexus
golden kraken
topaz garnet
golden kraken
# hybrid nexus I should have worded it better, do I still need to roll the 1d4 for the dagger i...

yep. For an overview:

you roll a d20 to hit, adding your DEXterity and Proficiency modifiers. If that meets or beats your enemy's AC (armor class), you "hit" them. This is called an "attack roll", or "roll to hit".

If you hit, you then roll damage. The dagger deals 1d4+ DEXterity, and then you add the Sneak Attack damage if you satisfy the conditions for Sneak Attack. Sneak attack damage starts at 1d6, and increases by another 1d6 every 2 rogue levels.

topaz garnet
golden kraken
#

personally, I think it'd be cooler if sneak attack were harder to pull off but did more damage, but the rules have long-since been set.

hybrid nexus
#

I didnt know sneak attack was only for rogues

vernal onyx
#

I can’t believe I’m asking this, but what are the gods that Clerics worship? And do they affect any boosts or something?

hybrid nexus
golden kraken
#

gods depend on setting

#

so, ask your DM

harsh fjord
golden kraken
hybrid nexus
#

It'd be balanced if you had to work to achieve it

fleet field
golden kraken
#

alas, it would also be more complicated and less beginner friendly, apparently, so we don't have it. If you ask me, the designers underestimated players' ability to pick things up on the fly, but it is what it is

fleet field
#

That specifies what’s needed to activate it

golden kraken
fleet field
#

In general I would say about 3/4 of the attacks a rogue makes will trigger sneak attack, if they play smart

topaz garnet
golden kraken
#

you either need Advantage or an ally within 5 feet, which are both easy to get

topaz garnet
#

not an ally, just an enemy of the target

#

so in a free-for-all pit fight, a rogue is 'eating well'

hybrid nexus
#

This seems like other spells and traits are making logical ways to play worse for the sake of balance

golden kraken
#

<insert more grumbling about this design stripping away their class identity and basically just making them more mobile Fighters in combat>

topaz garnet
#

if someone's getting hassled by an enemy in 5ft of them, the rogue can sneak attack that someone.

golden kraken
fleet field
topaz garnet
#

"Low Blow" or "Exploited Strike"

golden kraken
topaz garnet
golden kraken
#

more elegant than "dagger to the balls" for sure

slow hawk
#

And this channel really isnt for an ad hoc explanation of “why are things not like how I thought…”

golden kraken
hybrid nexus
golden kraken
#

where else ought we go

slow hawk
#

Without actually reading the rules, though, there is no context for the discussion

fleet field
#

We never said you can’t

slow hawk
#

Nearly everything would make more sense if they had the structure first

fleet field
#

I would say it isn’t exactly fun if a rogue could just go “for x reason I think it’s logically reasonable that I slit this guy’s throat and Insta-kill him”

slow hawk
#

“Sneak attack” as an abstract concept is not that helpful unless you can understand how it fits as a rogue feature

golden kraken
hybrid nexus
topaz garnet
#

It's just that you won't really be able to instantly kill the final boss outside of a very curated list of potential instakill features or "instantly not our problem anymore" options.
After all, what Pixelatedcat just said

hybrid nexus
#

However it just seems odd that logical stuff we are used to gets replaced by different logic

golden kraken
#

one could then argue that having to internalize a set of rules to play the game is a drawback, but most people consider it a worthwhile one to prevent calvin-balling

topaz garnet
#

The combat rules exist in an abstraction - there's a bunch of reasons you can't just go "I slit the throat and kill them we win", and the same for them to you.

golden kraken
#

and besides, many DMs do allow (and encourage) bending the rules, or are simply good at using the rules to do what they want

slow hawk
#

Its a collection of mechanics designed for a particular purpose

topaz garnet
slow hawk
#

If you want a reality simulator type of game then this might not be it

topaz garnet
#

It's also for a 'heroic fantasy' - how many stories saw the bad guy instantly killed instead of having at least some struggle - some climactic fight, or a big chase, or something like that?

golden kraken
slow hawk
#

In DnD dragons exist, that doesnt make sense but here we are

#

Humans can fly, lizards can talk

#

You put reality aside when you play any game

golden kraken
#

there are good odds that you'll come to love the game mechanics in their own right, but they definitely don't simulate reality all that well

slow hawk
#

Why is a soccer goal worth one point, why is the field a certain size. Because the rules say so

hybrid nexus
#

I love daggers

vernal onyx
# golden kraken so, ask your DM

So if my first choice of god will always been Pelor, and my DM says that what god doesn’t matter, can I just choose Pelor, unless he says otherwise?

slow hawk
#

its a game

fleet field
slow hawk
#

If you are put off by a dagger’s stats in the game, i dunno

fleet field
#

Assuming a +5 to dexterity, a dagger does 1d4+5 damage, 7.5 on average

vernal onyx
fleet field
#

A rapier would do 1d8+5, 9.5 in average

#

So only 2 damage higher on average on a hit

slow hawk
fleet field
#

Fair

slow hawk
#

?

golden kraken
hybrid nexus
#

I understand the basic levels of how damage works

golden kraken
#

and has other benefits, like an increased chance to sneak attack (by virtue of having two chances to hit instead of one)

fleet field
#

Yeah, dual wielding daggers means you can attack more with them, closing the gap

hybrid nexus
#

But I at first talked about the logistics of daggers being 1d4

Then it turned into this somehow

golden kraken
#

but it also takes a bonus action to use the offhand attack, which means no Cunning Action for that turn, which is a rogue feature that lets you go faster/disengage from foes/Hide quickly

#

however Swashbuckler can effectively Disengage without spending a bonus action, so they use daggers quite well

#

Swashbuckler being a rogue subclass

slow hawk

action and bonus action are not interchangeable. Imagine them as different shapes. Sometimes, a feature may turn something with a time of 1 action into a bonus action, like Rogue's cunning action dash disengage or hide.

You don't automatically have a way to use your bonus action, correct. Anyone can access Two-Weapon Fighting, the one universal constant, by just picking up two daggers or something else with the Light property.
Otherwise it's up to features and traits or spells to give you something to spend it on

According to the rules, you only have bonus actions if you have a feature/ability granting one, so your example wouldn't work by the rules. What the DM allows is another story.

#

I wanna see more color blind characters, mainly because that can give the DM something to work with and maybe give the character a challenge

topaz garnet
# vernal onyx I thought it was about acting out dragons in caves and stuff

it's more a collaborative story, the DM is the world, extras, and villains, and monsters, and events, and the Players are the protagonist group.
The rules are there to provide an equal framework and provide consistency. So it's not "Oh I just kill them" you'd have to mechanically back up that your character's capabilities let them do that. Or pick a lock, bash a tough door in, intimidate someone, spread rumors, recall ancient esoteric magical theory, etc.

vernal onyx
#

I think I’ll like RP sessions

#

I never had a DND session in my life, but RP storyline sessions sound fun

topaz garnet
#

That, and you can't just say "I summon a hundred devils" - at most you could summon a devil. or if you had the budget and were of a level high enough to cast these spells, also use Planar Binding to keep one there as you summon another, and so on.

onyx yoke
#

It's a fun game as depending on the people they can get into character really well and make it both funny yet serious

vernal onyx
#

Wait is it like a spell

topaz garnet

planar binding is a spell that basically lets you trap an extraplanar (from a different plane, like an Angel, Devil/Demon, Elemental, etc) and make them do a job for you

vernal onyx
#

Okay that sounds cool, thanks for the tip

topaz garnet
#

Also, remember, a Cleric isn't "the healer class", they're Clerics. A pretty good class. Your subclass (your Divine Domain) will define your role much more finely. For example, a Life cleric and a War cleric will have very different capabilities granted by their subclass.

topaz garnet
#

plenty of other classes can access healing

vernal onyx
#

But when I checked the cleric spell list, I don’t remember seeing a attack spell

topaz garnet

they have some good ones, like Guiding Bolt (1st level), or Spiritual Weapon (2nd level)

Where do I start?
onyx yoke
#

Cleric: Life Domain. The Life domain focuses on the vibrant positive energy – one of the fundamental forces of the universe – that sustains all life. The gods of life promote vitality and health through healing the sick and wounded, caring for those in need, and driving away the forces of death and undeath

this is a small definition of a life cleric

vernal onyx
#

But Clerics are still the best class for healing, right

topaz garnet
#

I'll point you to check the basic rules thoroughly to make sure we're on the same page. Don't worry about memorizing what the rules are, just try to remember at least the vague outlines, and where to find the specific rules.

onyx yoke
#

Ehhh

#

yes and no

vernal onyx
#

Oh

topaz garnet
vernal onyx
onyx yoke
#

yep yep. I had that saved as i made a life cleric in the past and needed a small definition for it

topaz garnet
# vernal onyx So is there a better class for being a healing role/supportive role

"healing" has a couple, but life domain cleric is the simple "healing number go brrrr" option.
Supportive is quite nice on clerics, druids, and bards, all in different aspects of course. Clerics are often the holy/life energy stuff, and a decent few general spells. Druids have a bunch of spells only really showing up on their list. And bards are extremely versatile and have a lot of enchantment and illusion spells.

#

However
you've basically got six ability scores (only one will influence your spells as a cleric, being Wisdom), and then "what level are you" to determine your Proficiency Bonus. So there's not like a 'healing stat' or anything. This is what keeps things from devolving into a world of warcraft spreadsheet simulator

onyx yoke

topaz garnet

solemn light
# cosmic bronze um hi. I’m kind of interested in starting D&D but don’t really know anything, I’...

The above resources can help you get started! They include the free basic rules, which are similar to the Player Handbook you can purchase, but don't include as many class and race options. You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!

cosmic bronze
solemn light
#

It definitely feels that way at the start. Which is why it's important to remember you do not need to read all of it. Just read the bits that are relevant to you at that point and keep things simple to start.
You could read through every single class and how they work, and all their spells.. but that's a lot . But if you have a general idea of 'I think I want to play a druid'- just read druid. Just look at the 1st level abilities for now. No need to do homework on something you won't use just yet.

#

One skill that's really helpful for D&D is not memorisation of all the rules and mechanics- it's just knowing where to look them up when you get round to needing them.

topaz garnet
#

For example, knowing "oh there's a rule about this somewhere, let me find it" instead of "I have no idea if there's a rule for this that or the other thing"

cosmic bronze
#

would it be strange to have a neutral good paladin…? im interested in the class but I’m not sure I quite wanna be goody goody although the dndbeyond website stated that they typically are

topaz garnet
#

not at all

solemn light
#

Yep! 5e paladins can be any alignment.

topaz garnet
#

no alignment locks, that's just typically what they tend to be

cosmic bronze
#

cool cool okay! yeah makes sense haha

solemn light
#

5e, the current edition of D&D, is much 'softer' on alignment than earlier editions. In earlier editions paladins were locked to being 'Lawful Good' and were often played as very strict goody two-shoes.

In 5e alignment is a guideline. You can even ignore it, but it's just another way of thinking of your PCs personality. Are they more individualistic and rebellious (chaotic) or have a strong respect for laws and traditions of society (lawful). Are they someone who would put themselves first before anyone else (evil) or someone who'd put others first even if it costs them (good), or somewhere between these.

So go with what makes sense for the concept in your head and the paladin you're making. Think about their oath and how they interpret that and why they've sworn to it.

cosmic bronze
#

so uh. question for that. could my character just be an idiot who was bored and randomly made an oath to a god and just goes around doing stuff bc they want to 😭 or is that a bit out of place

solemn light
#

That'd be more out of place.
So for a paladin they gain their powers through embodying their oath. They don't even need a deity, but they do need to follow their tenets and strive to live to them- otherwise they are not paladins. And if they break their oath it's even possible they can lose their powers or become oathbreakers (This is a lot more dependent on your DM)

cosmic bronze
#

hmmm okay I see

solemn light
#

Playing a paladin who struggles with their oath, or is still really learning what their oath means can be done. In fact I'd say it's very common for paladins over an adventure to question some of their tenets. Eventually they'll face something that will challenge them.

Also Paladins don't pick an oath until 3rd level. In part this is to simulate the first two levels being the time where a paladin is really trying to figure out their oath. But overall if you choose to play a paladin, you are choosing to play someone who will attempt to uphold their oath as best they can, and be empowered through it.

cosmic bronze
#

okay I see I see,, how would the first two levels work without the oath then? I mean I haven’t gotten to that part of the manual yet but they would probably be combat, right?

topaz garnet
#

"The most important aspect of a paladin character is the nature of his or her holy quest. Although the class features related to your oath don’t appear until you reach 3rd level, plan ahead for that choice by reading the oath descriptions at the end of the class."

solemn light
#

It'll be in the class section for paladins, at higher levels. And yes, first two levels work without an oath, but there is still the RP perspective that you are trying to work towards an oath, until you are ready to swear it.

If wanting to pick a class purely for the mechanics, without any intention to roleplay it, best chat with your DM about the why. It can be done, but for a few DMs it won't make any sense to them why someone would pick a class about adhering to an oath, only to not actually care about an oath at all- why pick it then?

cosmic bronze
#

fair fair yeah thank you :)

topaz garnet
#

You still have an oath, the features just don't appear until 3rd level

solemn light
#

You're in a sense 'earning' the oath.

cosmic bronze
#

gotcha

topaz garnet
#

it's only at 3rd level does the oath actually begin to manifest any divine power for your devotion and adherence

opaque forge
#

hey

solemn light
#

Little off-topic for this channel, but an anecdote related to this:
In one game I ran, a young squire NPC joined the party because she was determined to bring one of them to justice, but was talked into helping him finish his quest and save people.

At the start of her journey with them, she was determined to swear an oath of devotion to her order. But as she journeyed with the group, often acting as a moral compass and touchstone for them, and speaking with the people they rescued- or captured- and gained worldly experience, by the time she returned to her order to swear her oath, she didn't swear an oath of devotion- but redemption.

She started off trying to earn one oath, and by level 3, had discovered the oath that was truly calling to her.

But this is very DM dependent, and something you'll need to chat with your DM about if wanting to try and play with what your oath means to your character at low levels and if you actually end up changing your mind on what oath they'll take (which may depend on which subclasses you actually have access to)

opaque forge
#

what is 5e

solemn light

opaque forge
#

#

D&D has had a few editions over the years. They're very similar in concept, but have different rules and lore. If you've ever played an Elderscrolls (Or even Zelda, or many other videogame franchises) game, it's a bit like that- same overall idea and lore and worlds, but the game mechanics are different in each one, and sometimes lore and story is retconned.

topaz garnet
fleet field

Paladins are warriors who swear an oath to a cause, generally holy in nature, and get magic as a result

crude musk
opaque forge
#

oh very cool so thats why they get irritated by the rogue

#

crude musk
#

No, thats a cliche/trope

opaque forge
#

oh

fleet field
#

Paladins don’t have to be good

opaque forge
#

i though it was because they are holy

crude musk
#

You will encounter a lot of stereotypes, cliches, and tropes about the game and it's various elements

topaz garnet
#

For example, a fighter can be... an eldritch knight (getting wizard spells), a battle master (specific maneuvers, such as tripping, disarming, pushing, etc), or a champion (more crits)

a Paladin can swear an oath of Devotion (basic "knight in shining armor"), or something like an Oath of Vengeance (will hunt down those who wronged you), or maybe oath of Conquest (described with "rule with an iron fist / douse the flames of hope")

crude musk
#

Those do not dictate how your game will be played

opaque forge
#

i see so don't let your character limit your imagination

gray ocean
#

how does one write a background story for a character when they don't know/own the campaign the DM is running?

crude musk
#

Let the game rules guide your imagination rather than limit it

topaz garnet
#

for a vast majority of the game, "flavor is free" - describe things differently without affecting mechanics, you're good.

opaque forge
#

but keep in mind what they might do

crude musk
#

Usually that happens in session 0

gray ocean
#

oh alright

crude musk
#

Usually it'll go something like:
Player: "I have an idea for my characters background, and it's something like....."
DM: "Cool, that sounds good, although given the setting and adventure, you might want to tweak......"

#

Stuff like maybe you want your character to have lost their parents in a war, but there wasn't actually any wars in recent history so the DM suggests a natural disaster instead. That kind of thing

gray ocean
#

I'm just thinking, my character is going to be an ex-soldier, so I'd need to know what sort of military she actually came from, y'know?

crude musk
#

Then you say "I want my character to be an ex-soldier, does that work and if so, what details do I need to know?"

onyx yoke
#

that would also depend on the race of your character

crude musk
#

It might be that there haven't been any wars for your character to be an ex-soldier from so instead your DM might suggest they're an ex-mercenary

gray ocean
#

Open communication is key ... I'm just very nervous as a new player lol

Artificer is definitely not an easy class to play when making a new character. Believe me, my first character was a bard/wizard. Biggest mistake of my life, but still my favorite character.

I'd suggest if you want to play a tech-flavored character, you might want to play an easier class to start off with. Maybe a Rock Gnome Fighter or something with Tinker's Tools

and my character is a anthropomorphized Furret(Pokemon), from an alternet universe who was caught in a multiveral gateway accident and bla bla bla... Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Wimey... and ended up in the world of DND

Where do I start?
topaz garnet
slate phoenix
#

Would it be better to create a new character from scratch or use a premade character for my first character (using dnd beyond)

topaz garnet
#

it's subjective

#

you might want to look at a premade to see how it's all composed, and try making your own to figure out how the building process works, following the step-by-step guide in the basic rules

cosmic bronze
#

hi I’m back from last night. would my character be able to be an ex-paladin who broke their oath and is now something like a rogue?

main fulcrum
#

That could potentially work as backstory for a rogue character

slate phoenix
#

what does a premade character from dnd beyond not have so i can work on that

main fulcrum
#

Though you'd want to discuss it with your DM

slate phoenix
#

because i kinda just wanna go with the premade option and make my own character once i figure everything else out

cosmic bronze
#

okay cool! thank you!

harsh fjord
slate phoenix
#

basically what im saying is is there already a premade backstory

topaz garnet
#

it'd be really difficult to make a backstory that can go into the game of any DM ever

smoky adder
#

I assume they’d leave the backstory open for players to put their own spin on it.

harsh fjord
#

I think the premade characters for the starter set modules include backstories that hook into the stories of those specific adventures.

slate phoenix
#

i must be severely uneducated about dnd then

#

i just thought like backstories were a requirement

smoky adder
#

Except for the BG3 characters. dndLol

harsh fjord
#

They are pretty common, but they're usually worked out in concert with the DM so they're tailored to the world/setting/adventure.

slate phoenix
#

so i dont have to worry about backstory until i find a game

smoky adder
#

Who you are is at least in part shaped by the world around you.

harsh fjord
#

You can have loose concepts, but the specifics are for when you find a game, yeah.

slate phoenix
#

gotcha

smoky adder
#

So without the details of that world, it can be hard to make something that fits.

north cove
#

You could always come up with a story ahead of time, but just leave location names, blank then fill them in once you find a campaign and learn more of the world

fading sierra
#

how loud do spells with verbal components need to be cast? like is it always going to be 'alerts everyone in a mile radius' type of shouting or does it vary from spell to spell?

slate phoenix
#

also would one shots which im still not sure what theyre are, be better than campaigns to like learn how the game works

smoky adder
#

Oh hey, this first premade character actually does come with a backstory.

You previously pursued a simple profession among the peasantry as a shepherd. But something happened that set you on a different path and marked you for greater things: You stood up to a tyrant’s agents, and this marked you as a hero of the people.

You come from a humble social rank, but you are destined for so much more. Already the people of your home village regard you as their champion, and your destiny calls you to stand against the tyrants and monsters that threaten the common folk everywhere.

slow hawk
harsh fjord
slate phoenix
#

also what are one shots

north cove
#

Basically one shot are one quick adventure for one character

slate phoenix
#

oh

cobalt frigate
harsh fjord
#

One-shots are games finishing in one session. (Ideally.)

slate phoenix
#

because i dont feel like i want the first thing i do in dnd be a year long campaign

cobalt frigate
#

TV analogy for D&D
One-shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series

slate phoenix
#

whats the difference of an adventure to a campaign

cobalt frigate
#

See what I just posted above.

harsh fjord
#

Many adventures make up a larger campaign, basically.

slate phoenix
#

so adventures are multiple one shots, and campaigns are multiple adventures?

north cove
harsh fjord
#

One-shots have a beginning, middle, and end in one session. An adventure's beginning, middle, and end is drawn out over a longer period of time.

slate phoenix
#

i just thought that campaign and adventure were basically the same thing

cobalt frigate
#

An adventure could last several sessions. A campaign could have many different unrelated adventures.

My current campaign has been going on for two years. During the 20 (game) days of downtime of the campaign the PCs took a detour to have four personal side quests (all self contained adventures unrelated to the main campaign story arc).

harsh fjord
#

These terms are loose approximations; like any community, we don't always agree on what they mean.

slate phoenix

whats PC?

north cove
#

Player character

slate phoenix

dnd community seems to have a bunch of abbreviations that arent elaborated on

north cove

Don’t worry, I mean, I’m still pretty new myself, but they’re not too hard to learn

slate phoenix
#

you got any more you could run past me real quick

gray ocean
#

NPC is non-player character

slate phoenix
#

that arent dm because thats pretty obvious

#

like whats GM?

gray ocean
#

Gamemaster

north cove
#

Basically, just another dungeon master

gray ocean
#

It's the non-D&D branded version of a DM

slate phoenix
#

so they mean the same thing

north cove
#

It basically upgrade

cobalt frigate
#

Game Master (GM) is the generic version of DM because Dungeon Master is trademarked by WotC (Wizards of the Coast).

gray ocean
#

Yes, but dungeon master is the term D&D uses for its brand

north cove
slate phoenix
#

so other games like pathfinder use GM

north cove
#

I don’t know what Pathfinder is, but I assume so

gray ocean
#

Any game that's not D&D, because DM is a trademark

slate phoenix
#

fading sierra

can a sorceror get their powers from just about anything the imagination could plausibly make up, so long as that thing provides them with innate magic? you know, same way warlock's patrons are more or less completely customizable with one of the only thru-lines being that they're the one providing the warlock the powers

harsh fjord

main oyster
#

If dc is 25 but I roll a nat 20 and modifier is +2 so total is 22, does the attack miss because it's less than dc or it hits because it's a nat 20 ?

topaz garnet
#

you're saying DC and attack, those are different things

Attack rolls and death saving throws are the only things with special rules for a nat20/nat1

main oyster
#

Okay, consider it ac of the enemy

topaz garnet
#

If something's AC is 25, and something with only a +2 bonus to hit attacks them, they can only hit if they roll a 20 on the d20, which makes the attack automatically hit and be a critical hit

main oyster
#

Okay, so even if total is less than ac, a nat 20 hits ?

topaz garnet
#

yes, that's what automatically hitting means. It hits regardless of the total or their AC.

main oyster
#

👍 thank you

topaz garnet
#

If you're making an ability check or saving throw, rolling a 20 (or a 1 for that matter) does nothing special, it's a number like any other.
So for a DC 25 check or saving throw, a +4 bonus will never succeed - you need, at minimum, a +5 to even begin having that chance to succeed.

main oyster
#

Oh

#

Thanks for the clarification

topaz garnet
#

Yeah. Common misconception, but automatic success on saves/checks isn't a rule. A DM may rule otherwise (with effects debated to be positive or negative), but that's the base rule.
On the other hand, it means having an absurd bonus to a skill begins to auto-succeed certain (low) DCs.

#

slate quest
#

I may see if my dm will allow me to homebrew my idea.

gray ocean
#

Okay so, silly question, what exactly IS a Champion Fighter? I know it's meant to be the most simple (sub)class, but how does one roleplay/make one without it leaning towards the other (sub)classes more?

#

Like, say you want to make a super strong half-orc... how would that not fall under, like, a barbarian?

topaz garnet
#

The subclass description has a bit of detail to it
But flavor is free
A champion is basically just fighter plus

gray ocean
#

but fighter is already vague

topaz garnet
topaz garnet
gray ocean
#

so a barbarian would be more brute strength and rage while a fighter uses strength with trained skill

smoky adder
#

Literal strength, as in the ability score.

#

A barbarian only adds their rage damage to melee weapon attacks using strength.

#

Fighters could have builds that prioritize dexterity instead of strength.

gray ocean
#

so, for the orc example:
You'd be a big, raging brute with no armor and a massive axe or
A trained orc who wears chainmail and uses a longsword

#

also, I'm talking more about flavor

topaz garnet
#

We've got... runes, parallel timeline echoes, maneuvers, Wizard spells, psionics, samurai, cavalier, for fighter
Whereas barbarian is mostly what flavor of rage: animal totem, ancestors, big anger, beast anger, storm anger, etc

crude musk
#

@gray ocean A fighter is the martial generalist. They're someone whose life is conflict in one form or another and as such has picked up some degree of mastery of almost every form of armed combat
As for champion, they take this general skill in martial ability and hones it further. They can run further, fight longer, strike harder. They're elite

#

As stated, they're Fighter+. They're SAS or Navy Seals

gray ocean
#

I see

#

I didn't want my character to be too special but I guess that's the point of D&D

crude musk
#

What I've described doesn't make a champion character special

gray ocean
#

I meant in terms of story and such

crude musk
#

Yes, I know

gray ocean
#

being an elite fighter makes you inherently special compared to your average soldier
