so for D&D I don't really need to buy anything to get into it?
I'm just afraid people won't want to play with me or have me as their DM if I don't own all the stuff
Yes - no purchase necessary. The free basic rules, character sheets, dice, and an imagination and willingness to play is really all you need.
The other books and the options they provide are just that - options.
But not needed to play at all.
Alright... 😵💫
My kid wanted to DM and honestly they could have ran their game just with the free basic rules (they came up with their own homebrew monsters and their own adventure).
It was a fun adventure "finding the missing springs to the trampoline at a fair/carnival".
Also featured a "land octopus" that they came up with.
Things like that don't come in books - they come from our imaginations.
Aint that a heartwarming adventure
I don’t own everything and I’ve haven’t had much issue.
Plus there are free dnd adventures out there.
DMs guild has a few, some are even AL compatible.
Not to mention dnd beyond will occasionally provide some free adventures.
Not too long ago they gave lost mines for free.
I feel like a monkey that just discovered fire
How long does the average campaign run for? And does each one take place in the same world? Or is each world different and it’s just the things like creatures and gods that get carried over to save the DM from the pain of writing it all
Hello!
Hello
I see
Can very much depend on the group and DM.
A prewritten full module could take months or even years to play through, depending on how often you play, how long you play and how 'efficient' you are at getting through it.
A DM might choose to then run another module in the same setting after and let you use the same heroes.
Same with homebrew campaigns- they might run for as long as the DM has energy.
sometimes campaigns are in the same world, sometimes they're completely different genres, and some are short, and others are really long
I've known some people to keep up a homebrew campaign for decades with the same heroes or occasionally replaced heroes in the same story.
Other times groups prefer shorter campaigns with new PCs each time to keep things fresh.
DnD is really just one particular (set of) ruleset(s) that people use for story writing and roleplaying
and yet other groups have very high mortality rates, and rotate PCs that way
Here’s another small question. When it comes to online play how does dice rolling work? Like couldn’t a player just lie about a bad roll. Or dms roll for them or do you gotta show the dice or sum?
I use a website that gives us digital dice and it even shows up on our visual board and everything
Also I hope to meet a DM that can take me to a very long campaign. As a kid that used to write short stories, I got rather attached to my characters
That sounds useful. What’s the name?
everyone rolls online- most apps come with other features, like Roll20 or Foundry, but there are a ton out there
heck, the Avrae bot for discord works
I cant remember the name but I'll ask a friend cuz he plays it with me, but its really cool you could also go into dice editing mode and change the appearance of it, myself made it sparkly to fit the whimsical wizard theme
There are ways to roll dice online even in discord
thar too
If you feel your players might/are lying, then you've got a bigger issue at hand
D&D is generally built around trust, including trusting your players won't cheat
True
For some information on how playing online can work and what platforms are available.
Is that an issue often enough to worry about? So far from my like 30 minutes of talking to people people seem trustworthy and nice.
People played online before dice rolling apps were a thing, the assumption is that your players aren't cheating because that's a selfish and uncool thing to do
Hello friends!
Im new to DnD, i used to play as a player for a really little amount of time.
I want to start writing a campaign for me and my friends, im a new dm.
How can i start writing down a campaign?
I've never encountered cheating players and honestly the number of times I've personally seen a DM come in to this server and say they think a player is cheating I could count on one hand
🙏 bless your soul
(very true, though it bears mentioning that there's also an assumption that online dice apps will be used; there's usually no reason not to use one unless someone's trying to cheat)
which is very very rare- I've played with a whole lot of folks, and only met a single cheater
Nah, there are lots of reasons
Including "I like rolling physical dice" and "I didn't buy this expensive set of obsidian dice for them to sit there collecting dust"
the website that I use for dice I don't see how people could cheat even if someone wanted to, a chat log shows up to what you rolled along with a pretend sice that rolls on the browser board
and it cant be deleted
The point is that cheating is not such a prevailant problem that it should create the notion you must use digital dice for online play
I’d recommend by first running a pre-written adventure so you can first learn what your strengths and weaknesses are as a DM.
Then make notes on what works and doesn’t work for you, using the pre written campaign as a reference point.
My players use a mix of digital and physical dice, and mainly use digital just because it saves time
I will frequently roll physical dice, especially for dramatic moments and I want to bust out a special dice such as some metal ones or an oversized D&D that my players can hear go thunk over the mic
Yeah, my main reason for insisting everyone use digital for my online game is just speed. Quicker to click the button, roll out the attack + damage and have it instantly visible instead of waiting for a roll you can't see to be mathed and called out.
Man Honestly, I won’t lie. I’ve been wanting to try this stuff out for a long, long time. But I’ve always been a tad bit intimidated by it all. Plus I’m a bit on the slow side and seeing all these numbers makes my brain spin. But y’all are crazy nice and helpful a tad shame I didn’t try this sooner
I do miss physically being at a dnd game since I moved else were, the closest comic book store I know here is 18 mins away and i cant drive verses the one that was 15 mins away and to people that i know there
also been intimidated by running a game as a dm because I'm rusty with numbers and nervous about my own story/world building ideas being put into a TTRPG tho the thought of it pops.up in my head once ina while
When it comes to trust, it’s important to remember that if it’s ever broken or lost, then you can’t play a game together.
This applies to both player and DM.
The idea of being the DM sounds amazing to me. And I hope to be one someday. But first, I should probably learn the basics and maybe be a player before being a DM
I can only imagine the wacky scenario it would be if a first timer became a DM
Even as a DM you don’t need to know every rule.
Any recommended pre-writtetn adventure you know?
Im really unexperienced as a Dungeon Master and player, also should i read the Dm's hand book?
there was this amazing ttrpg I saw an ad for long ago but it was like dnd but with Cartoons and you had to be quick on actions you take which sounded amazing since I draw cartoons lol
Hello
Most definitely not I imagine that would be pretty hard. I imagine most DMs are pretty chill about the rules and go for more fun things rather than stick to them or just homebrew
Welcome to the party
If that’s ever a worry, let your table know and they’ll work with.
If there’s ever a rule you don’t know, make a judgment call you think is fair in the moment and let your table know.
Then look it up after the session and relay the official rule to the table, so things are clean moving forward.
didnt even know you could do that as silly as that sounds coming from me and knowing homebrew are a thing
I've played a bit of dnd before but there always seem to be drama that ends the Campaign chort
Imagine needing to know everything before being able to dm
That would suck real bad
reminded me when I had to watch training videos for my new job, I was reminded that I dont have to know EVERYTHING because I was just working at the bakery department
I recommend dragon of icespire peak because it breaks down the campaign into individual quests.
This make things easier to prep as they are connected and self contained. Plus the party unlocks more quests after completing some of the currently available ones.
This lets your players pick and choose how to go through the campaign in a way that makes it very beginner friendly for new DMs.
ooo intresting, I'll keep that in mental note
There are some things you can do to avoid and minimize that. Examples can be found in my previous post here: #dnd-discussion message
How can i start preparing for that campaign sir?
Im honestly amazed how ive never heard of cases where people just leak dnd story modules so people dont have to pay themselves
Oh it was my friends starting to fight and not getting there way nothing to stop it
He was silenced
📸
Lol
Read the first three quests that are available. Run a session zero, to establish ground rules and lines & veils, and get yourself a DM screen .
aight thanks!
If you have more questions about ruining a campaign, feel free to ask in #dm-discussion . You be able to get alot of insight from different DMs.

I’m bit of a nerd for undead how do they work as playable characters? If allowed? If it’s a thing
Reborn are the only option outside homebrew
Hexblood are a thing.
Sleep? I’ve never heard of such a thing
That sounds pretty interesting
It's caught up to mee thanks to having to wake up at 5
Hexbloods are not undead they are hag children
Usually I stay up late
Like I said your only option for sort of undead is reborn
Definitely something to ask your dm about
I dont think there is but if im not wrong there is a necromancer class
But that might be a module/homebrew thing idk
Subclass
Ah
😵💫. I think talking to the DM might be one of the safest options. I’ve always had an idea for a undead warlock thought it was a neat idea
Undead warlock is an actual game option
there are no official races which have the Undead type, but there are many that have a close theme or can be easily reskinned to fit your character idea
What about dhampir? I haven’t explored the racial options from Ravenloft.
Yeah dhampir could also work
Reborn, Dhampir, Shadar-kai, Aasimar - plenty of spooky race options out there
Necromancer bard? 👀
smh, y'all are missing the most obvious option
Reborn are the the ones with deathless nature so not eating drinking breathing or sleep
become a level thirteen wizard and befriend a level seventeen wizard
This sounds like the safest option. All I gotta do is just remove my skin.
and then True Polymorph an undead of your choosing into a humanoid, Magic Jar to bodyhop,
drop True Polymorph,
College of Spirits could be fun
thus becoming an undead for the permanent duration of the spell
getting a bit beyond the scope of this channel
My Brain is boiling
Even though I don’t understand it whatsoever, it sounds like one hell of an idea. And exactly why I’m getting into dnd
wym? It's a simple and effective solution to the problem of not being able to be undead
Nothing more than sheer creativity
And it will take a boatload of time
alternatively, you can die and have the local necromancer resurrect you. Your soul will probably be in there somewhere.
Yeah we’re getting into #character-discussion
🏃
any necromancer worth their salt would never teather the soul of a mortal unless they want to torment them
soulless undead are so... soulless, though. No love in such creations.
They are very informative. I’ll say that much
Hey guys what is ‘guild’ (on a stats sheet like what does it mean)
Where are you seeing it used? Under Bonds, I assume?
It's a private organisation dedicated to a specific purpose of business
For example, the leatherworkers guild would be an organisation whose members are all leatherworkers and would work to look after the interests of leatherworkers
No I was reading a dnd related WEBTOON and it had a stats thing on the characters and mentioned guild
Well there's no guarantee it was accurate
Ohhhh cool ty :DD
It might not even have been D&D
No it was lol
It was basically just stories from the games and it showed the author and their friends characters and stuff
Well 'guild' is not default information for a character
I would show what it looked like but you can’t send pics in this chat 😭
I'm not saying it wasn't there, I'm saying that's not a default piece of D&D information
would, the artificer cannon proc sneak attack if i had advantage
No, because the Eldritch Cannon is not a weapon
Yeah ik lol
awe
Rules questions belong in #dnd-rules
oh okay, sorre
s'all good, just a heads up
Guilds are an in-universe thing. The exist as part of the story, rather than a specific game mechanic that you would write on your character sheet. If it was displayed as part of the character’s stats in this comic, that’s something that the writer either changed or made up as part of their comic.

Hello, check out those links
So dnd is skyrim with a dice?
No, not really
You have characters
Yes, but a lot of games do
Skill checks
They share the fact they're both fantasy set games with RPG, but they're very different experiences
D&D is a cooperative, collaborative, tabletop roleplaying game
Imaginary skyrim with multiplayer
No, it's not, again it's very different experience
Just with turn based combat
D&D, as a ttrpg, has a much more narrative focus, an open ended structure, and a focus collaborative storytelling and worldbuilding
There are so mechanical similarities between video games and dnd but because everything is under the control of the people playing, it’s not very similar to play

best subclass for a snake paladin? (no arms no legs but insane at staring contests and eating pies)
That's homebrew so kinda beyond the scope of this channel
You could try #character-discussion or #homebrew
hi im new herei where do i find basics?
Scroll up just a few messages. The bot post above has everything you need to get started
Ok! Thanks
The DMG is useful in some respects, but it doesn't give much practical advice for running the game. It's also notoriously disorganized. I like this guide: https://howtogm.guide/
For pre-written adventures that are newbie-friendly and free, I'd suggest checking out The Green Blight (see the link above), The Silvyr Tower, The Delian Tomb, or Winghorn Press's adventures. Any of the starter set adventures (Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, or the Stranger Things set) should also be good choices.
thanks!
There's also the recent Peril in Pinebrook that uses a streamlined version of the rules you might be interested in.
Hey, are there rules that prevent players from doing multiple checks or repeating the same checks?
That's a good question for #dnd-rules, but I don't believe so?
I need some players to test a one shot i made for my irl friends. No idea how long it take to finish.

Hey! I’m a newbie to dnd and I’m trying to play a way of the astral self monk. I wanted to have the astral projection be a creature from dnd that symbolizes protection/defense because that’s my character’s thing. Protecting those who can’t defend themselves/defending his allies
Do you guys have any idea what creature would closely resemble that?
The second bot post here can guide you through how to play dnd online in addition to the instructions in #find-a-game
For in person games check out your local library and game shop.
sick, thanks!
I don’t believe astral monk will do what you are describing.
For help bringing a character concept to life, hop over to #character-discussion and share the character concept and ideally how you want the character concept to function.
“FORMS OF YOUR ASTRAL SELF
The astral self is a translucent embodiment ofthe monk's soul. As a result, an astral selfcan reflect aspects ofa monk's background, ideals, flaws, and bonds, and an astral selfdoesn't necessarily look any thing like the monk. For example, the astral selfofa lanky human might be reminiscent ofa minotaur-the strength ofwhich the monk feels within. Similarly, an ore monk might manifest gossamer arms and a deli cate visage, representing the gentle beauty ofthe ore's soul. Each astral self is unique, and some ofthe monks ofthis monastic tradition are known more for the appearance oftheir astral selfthan for their physical appearance.
When choosing this path, consider the quirks that define your monk. Are you obsessed with something? Areyou driven byjustice or a selfish desire? Anyof
these motivations could manifest in the form ofyour astral self.”
From the Tasha’s book
Hello hopefully future fellow DnDers.
I have long wanted to try DnD but could not get my friends to play, nor do i live near any game stores.
I've decided to try to find a group online, but before i do I was hoping someone here could inform me what "tools" i need so i dont bother my first GM needlessly.
Do I need anything besides the players handbook and the starter set to play?
That more than covers it as the DM is often the one with the books and such. Dice (though these can be digital), a character sheet (physical or digital), something to write with/on, and people would be the other ingredients.
You should also be familiar with the rules (character creation, using ability scores, combat, and adventuring would be the key chapters).
You don’t need both the PHB and the starter set. In fact, if you’re ok with the bare minimum, everything you need to get started is available for free online. The basic rules can be found on D&D Beyond, and includes 9 races, 12 classes, and one subclass for each. The players handbook will give you more customization options including new subclasses and new spells, but the rules of the game, for things like how to make your character, how combat works, etc are the same in the PHB and the Basic Rules
i'd prefer to have the feats an such in front of me.
I'll surely f something up making my char but even if my dm(hopefully) is nice and accomodating id like to atleast make an effort.

No time like the present!
I was the same way. It took me years to actually jump into the game. But I’m so glad I finally did
I'll admit critical roll was the last push after 10 years of watching lore videos, as much of a red flag as ive heard that is.
Not at all. Critical Role was the starting point for many people that have joined in the last few years. Myself included
It’s a huge factor in the game’s current popularity
The only red flag about Critical Role is expecting a table of amateurs to deliver the same experience as professional actors. Otherwise, it's nothing to fret over.
watching critical role and thus becoming interested in dnd is not a red flag
ofc they wont
might be better in someways(probs worst in most) cus great dm as matt is his quest is made for 1000s of viewers rather than just his table
Ive watched alot of critcrab horror stories i think i got most the taboos down.
ty for the help gang i really appreciate it.
If you have other questions along the way, don't be afraid to ask!
okey then question.
if allready put some thought into my first chars back story.
How much of a nono is pking? (The char i thought up would not like edgelords or murderhobos and i doubt he'd warn them cus he kinda dumb)
Pking?
player killling
Most tables will be against it; it's a cooperative game, so if you don't make a character who wants to work with the others, roll up a different character.
D&D is also not balanced for PvP.
youre trying to tell a story together and whatever so most tables like to refrain from in party combat to a certain extent
oh idc if it backfires and im the one who end up dying
I would not go in with the expectation that will be allowed.
yeah but most people dont really find that fun that ive met anyways
and ofc id make another char for an evil party
I'd say maybe reconsider bringing the character that is likely to attack party members to begin with.
but if you've discussed it with your dm/other players out of character and they said it's cool, then go for it.
but if my escaped slave say has a party memeber who starts enslaving people i dunno how to reconsile not attacking em with the char
This kind of thing can be discussed in session zero before the game even gets underway so these conflcits get nipped in the bud.
Or they can be consented to.
anyone up for a quick chat i can bounce a few ideas off of?
I mean that's a legit concern to have, cause like your character wouldn't ignore that, and the guy who wants to enslave people IN GAME despite know your backstory is kind of a jerk, but also it might be easier to just not bring an ex slave if you're likely to play with slavers.
Exactly, so you have to not privilege your fun at the table's expense.
if discussed i immagine i could even add to the evil guys fun. Having to avoid/deceive my dumb lovable goliath
Sure, but then folks can elect to say "Yes, I'm down for that" or "Please, no." And you adjust accordingly.
ofc
I mean that's fine, but definitely talk about it with them before hand. don't just go in expecting them to be cool with it.
ofc
im well aware no game will ever be run exclusively for me
and having procrastinated for 10 years i think i have atleast vague concept for chars who could fit in alot of settings.
I'm honestly having kind of a similar issue creating a character for a Ravenloft campaign. the DM said certain races/classes will be treated differently by the populace, and that sounds neat to play around with, but at the same time I don't want to have to sit out all the social interactions just because I wanted to be a dragonborn or whatever.
tho im alil hesitant to start with magic, it seems a lil convoluted.
Magic is definitely tricky. Doable, but it can be involved. I'm still learning spells three years later.
Talk to your DM about it and work with them to come up with a solution that addresses your concerns.
seems like a fine line. my inexperience could lead to me either being useless or me minmaxin to hard which id not wanna do.
ofc
You almost certainly won't be useless. Every class has something they contribute to the whole, and no one character can be good at everything. Plus, your creativity could land on an idea no one else at the table has.
my first go with magic was an eldritch knight fighter. it's hard to say whether the limited spell school stuff made it more confusing, or only having a couple spells made it easier to manage
You could be a min max character and still contribute to the fun of the table.
I have a player in that exact boat. Definitely hard to say.
If you're worried about being useless as a full caster, just make sure you take at least one cantrip that does damage. Then you'll always have at least one thing you can do in combat
Good point but tbh im a lil scare(knowing myself) that id fall into the min maxing pit if i did it with the first char.
might just be easier to do like champion fighter with some levels of wizard so you don't have all the "no wait, can't use that spell"
i was thinking champ or barb(i forget the name of the subclass) the one that inflicts exhaustion on itself.
martial seems simpler for first time.
If it’s a concern feel free check out Ginny Di’s video on the subject: https://youtu.be/lT9d7Z1o1mk?si=NoF9-Z4tXw2FotOj
Berserker's Frenzy is typically considered the worst of the subclasses abilities, but don't let me stop you
It just has the dubious honor of being the only one that can actually kill you to use 😅
not sure if you intend to mix martial with magic, but it may be relevant to also note that you cannot cast spells while raging.
Hey new here, I’m looking for someone who is extremely lore savvy to hop in a call to help me with a character design
Maybe see if anyone in #character-discussion will lend a hand?
Ok ty
im not confident enuf to multiclass my first char
fair
are you starting at level 1? some classes don't really get what makes them unique until 2nd or 3rd level.
ive not found a group yet
ah
i was unsure what tool i needed
and didnt wanna needlessly be a bother
but apparetly i dont really need anything.
so just jump in.
you do sorta need a character sheet, and a basic understanding of the rules helps, but yeah all you really need is folks to play with.

Have you read the basic rules
Basic rules are a good start
what are you trying to do?
What spells would a lev 1 warlock have
It depends what kinda of Warlock you want to be, but I recommend Eldritch blast for a cantrip
You would get two cantrips and two 1st level spells of your choice, from the Warlock spell list
If you'd like help picking out your spells, #character-discussion would be the best place to ask for that advice
What is the list
You can also filter it to just cantrips and 1st-level spells.
Hex curses a creature so that you deal more damage to them with other attacks, and give them disadvantage on certain ability checks.
These questions really are things you need to look at D&D beyond for
Arms of Hadar can damage a bunch of people close to you and prevent them from taking reactions.
Copying spells here in bulk would really violate the rules and its more efficient and effective for you to learn to look at them yourself
Can Anyone hop on call and help me mąkę a character
What are you trying to make?
Have you picked a race and a background?
Ye i'm a dragonborn
I just made a character on the dnd beyond website
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
This handbooker helper video can serve as a good reference point: https://youtu.be/fPIkwvAiwQ8?si=yrjMf9svUshSIvof
I think I already did that on the website
A human warlock
I dont have Dice yet
If you make the character public, you can share the link to the character sheet in #character-discussion and #optimization for feedback.
Did your DM ask you to roll for your scores?
You can use digital dice.
If playing in person, you'll likely have someone in your dnd group that has enough dice to outfit a small army.
I'd suggest using the standard array or point buy, then, instead of rolling.
If your DM does want you to roll, they'll typically want to see the results for themself.
D&D Beyond has them.
Do i need to pay
You could also roll right here in Discord. Head to #ddb-avrae-commands and type !rollstats.
For D&D Beyond? No.
K
You don't need to pay for digital dice. You simply click on the dice icon and it will roll things for you.
You can create up to six characters for free, using anything from the Basic Rules.
@smoky adder i will
Plus virtual table tops such as roll20, alchemy rpg, and owlbear rodeo will have digital dice built into the platform.
Yeah Google does it for you, the advantage of physical dice though is the funny noises and it’s fun to throw dice
Where can i look for a game
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I just want to ask, how do attacks work, like I just learned dnd yester day and I am confused about the taatac, bonus action, hit points and damage, the entire thing about killing
An attack starts with an attack roll.
You roll a d20, add any applicable modifiers, then compare the total to the target's Armor Class (AC).
If the total equals or exceeds the AC, you've hit.
Then you roll for damage.
If it's less, you miss.
The total you roll for damage gets subtracted from the target's hit points.
Less THAN the AC?
Yes
If you meet or beat the targets Armor Class you hit
spamandtuna quick with the response today
So if a target has an AC of 15, you need to roll at least a 15 to hit.
If it's 14 or less, you miss.
Do your armor break?
No
Armor class may not even represent actual armor.
It's just a measure of your resilience to damage.
What about the bonus action?
Monks for example can have high AC and wear no armor.
there are rare situations where it can go down, but it's the acception, not the rule.
Are you asking about a specific bonus action, or bonus actions in general?
Bonus action in general
You can take one bonus action on your turn, but only when your character has a rule that says you can take a bonus action.
If you have multiple rules that do, then you can only pick one for that turn.
That's all?
A bonus action is a type of game action your character can take if you have a feature that says it uses a bonus action.
So you have Movement, Action, Bonus Action, and Reaction during your turns.
The only bonus action every character has access to is Two-Weapon Fighting.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
No, a combat map is optional
As in a game board? No, some folks play strictly using their collective imaginations.
In fact, the rules assume you're not using one by default.
But they are a very popular way to play.
So I can just say I move towards the enemy to the dm?
Yep
And the dm is not gonna consider if I have enough ft to do so?
Depends on the DM when playing theater of the mind
They might, you can say hey Dm I move to attack the enemy, the DM can then say, well it’s 40 ft away and you have a speed of 30 so you need to dash to reach it
On tabletop the distance can be measured.
Boards just help visualize the space, it’s a tool in a DMs arsenal and helps keep track of all the different variables in a game
it's not required to use a tabletop or board, but it makes things a lot easier to keep track of, and I highly recomend it
at least for fights
What about perception checks?
Even if it’s something simple like a piece of paper with a quick little box
If I fail on a perception check, how ridiculous can thins be?
A perception check is your ability to notice clue or piece of information
varies. a lot of dms will just say you don't notice anything of importance, but they're free to make a joke of it if they want
If you miss a perception check then your character probably has no clue that something is off, or they have a suspicion but they don’t know what it is
Like the dm tells me to roll a perception check to see the troll and I fails, will I be wondering around while my party is fighting?
you're unlikely to make perception checks to see whether your party is fighting something, unless you're completely in the dark or something
No, it’s just you might be surprised when the troll jumps out of the bush, meaning you may have disadvantage on initiative or they get an ambush round on you
Even in the dark, you could still hear the obvious fighting going on, especially if its near you
I would say Investigation leans more into piecing things together.
Perception can let you know there are footprints. While investigation can tell you the foot prints indicate signs of a fight.
No - it usually just means the DM won't provide additional info or details. Usually the party stays together (it's safer that way) so the chance of the whole group missing something important is usually slim to none. DMs don't like you to miss important plot points or story hooks anyway...
Once the troll is no longer hiding then you can see them you are just slow to react, shocked, surprised or however else you flavor your failed check
Yeah, I just tried to get a quick response out but yeah it fits investigation better
What about something like a trap, can all my party avoid it with perception checks and I fall for it because I failed?
Plus the other party members can relay information to each other.
Nope, cause if they warn you then you know it’s there
So maybe you didn’t see it, but your friend did and they say “hey watch out spike pit” you probably wouldn’t step in the spike pit
That's fun
Plus in certain scenarios you might end up doing group checks in which if at least half the group beats the check, the whole part succeeds.
Thank you so much
Been wanting to get into DND for a while now, ive made a couple characters with guidance before but due to some unforeseen whatevers ive never actually done a campaign, I dont know if any of the requests in #looking-for-players are newbie friendly tho and would prob like a more personalized sesh anywho
When you reply to a post, you can always ask if it's newbie-friendly.
gotchaaa
also would i find a more permanent party in #looking-for-community or is that more towards something else
i mean a permanent party is something ill find IRL but its good to start online
Those are for westmarches, kind of D&D as an MMO where there are multiple DMs and players in a living world. The DM posts a quest (or storyline) they want to run, and players sign up for it. It's not quite drop-in D&D, but it's close.
Meaning you might not regularly play with the same party and/or DM.
gotcha
Just be on the look out for tables that are willing to help out new players in #looking-for-players and don't be afraid to post in #750812887697588356, my most recent table was made through this discord and the game has been pretty fun so far.
And don't be afraid to reach out to folks and ask if they are willing to help you learn the game some more
Gotcha, thanks for the help
No. The game assumes basic things are easily possible, no question. For example, you don't roll to pet a dog and accidentally slap it, you don't roll to order some alcohol at the tavern and accidentally cause an international war, and you don't roll to see something in broad daylight in line of sight with no obstruction or obfuscation. You'd easily be aware a troll jumped out and your friends are fighting that troll, you might just have been caught off-guard at the troll jumping out of a hiding spot.
Rolling is meant to be done when there's a chance that your best possible result can do something different than your worst possible result. For example, that doesn't apply to shooting the moon with an arrow, or flapping your arms to try and fly - Your best possible result wouldn't be any different than the worst.

I have a character
Yes
Well welcome and same

Oh, okay thank you
Im a victim of the "Ive tried to play but the DM keeps cancelling" disease
How so?
Ive made tons of characters IRL but due to whatever the DM usually cancels before we start
so im taking it online now lol
Im a learn by playing type of person, where would be the most user friendly place to play a game of dnd
and im gunna learn to DM
Most use DND beyond iirc
i dont really like that website because everything cooler seems to be behind a paywall
Fair, you can always make your sheet IRL
I made the PDF im just trying to now learn the basics of the actual playing part of the game
Ive watched some videos but I find it hard to learn unless Im playing it
for all my multiverse sourced characters (kobolds kobolds and kobolds) i just do them IRL and have the DM import it as a homebrew
?, on dnd beyond?
yeah im not entirely sure what goes on the DM's side, never played'
but thats what they usually tell me to do
Ill figure it out
Well good luck 🙂
Im hoping to find a game tonight atleast
Maybe check out the virtual weekends: #dnd-newcomers message
Or you may be able to learn-to-play with Adventurers League. Head to #1050206572535623690.
You're unlikely to find a game to play tonight; D&D requires prep and, in many cases, a discussion before the game happens to be sure the group wants similar things out of play.
the fact that is called little leage is gold
^ shortest ive had to wait before the DM cancelled was a month and a half
Hoping the wider online scene isnt gunna be a repeat of that suffering xD
There are more players than DMs, so it may be tricky, but if you spread your net wide, you should be able to find something that lines up with your schedule and expectations.
I'm pretty sure that if someone cancels you could find a new game quicker
Ofc
What does VTT mean?
Virtual tabletop.
In short, a tool that can handle various components of the game: some include dice, character sheets, music. Others are just maps and tokens. It varies.
Ok thank you : )
aight! what should i know first? is dnd similar to that mobile game 'life in adventure'' i know the rules of that hahahha

D&D has a lot of rules associated with it, and while plenty of other games have used similar sets of rules, knowing those doesn't necessarily translate to D&D. You also don't have to learn them all in one go.
The links above will get you started. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask!
thank you!!
This is not related to any you've said but you have a nice pfp
thank you :> drew it myself
You're welcome and it's a very nice art style
hahahahaha thank you again
You're welcome
is it ok if i use the soundtrack of baldurs gate to set the tone of a scene?
Sure. The only caveat might be if you're streaming. If it's a private home game, though, by all means go for it.
thanks, my group won't do any streaming
Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2)
does this mean that it hits 1d4 plus 6 damage?
(it says piercing damage)
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) piercing damage.
It means you can either roll a 1d4 and add 2 or take the average of that formula (4).
k ty
With nobody around to copyright strike you, you can put on any music you want
These formula's are to make average damage displayed for the DM to be able to reference at a glance, to be able to guesstimate their damage output, and it was used to help calculate their CR
Heyya there, I'm pretty new to dnd and the main reason I'm super interested in it cuz of BG3. I love that and have spent around 60ish hours in it, and so here I am lol. Can anyone by chance give me a crash course on how to do this? I went ahead and bought a dnd starter kit so I've got all the dice and a couple of character sheets along with a small dungeon master guide, plus I along with everyone else have the online stuff at my disposal if need be.
No crash course needed or possible; sounds like tou already have the rules from the kit
Your best course is to read it, since you did spend money on it

Hello
Howdy!
Would a DM typically tell you when you have advantage or disadvantage, or is that something a player should keep track of?
Both. If you have a feature that explicitly gives you adv/disadvantage, you keep track of it
But the dm could also arbitrarily give you advantage or disadvantage based on other circumstances
Knowing your character’s abilities and the general rules is a shared responsibility. Both should be familiar with them
Cool, thanks. I’ve been reading through the PHB and I created a character sheet that I’m using in a solo adventure i found on DMsGuild (The Death Knight’s Squire) It’s teaching a bit about both what a DM and a player would do, it’s pretty handy, but obviously it leaves a lot of player freedom of choice out of the experience. Still cool as a sort of practice before a real game.
Not exactly sure if this is the right place to ask. But since I’m new I wanna ask a question about multi classing. I’ll be joining mid campaign group and I’ll be starting off as level 16. I wanna try hex blade since I love spell blades but I’m wondering what class can/should I multi class into to get some heavy armor alongside any other benefits I can grab for a melee magic user
Might be a dumb question but I’m new, with running campaigns online over discord, how do rolls work? Are each players required to have their own dice; would the DM roll the dice, or are there online RNG DnD dice?
- if you are new, you should not be multiclassing
- if you’re looking for more powerful builds, you want #optimization but be advised you will get more hardcore math answers
For more detailed character discussion please use #character-discussion or #optimization depending on what you're aiming for (the first is more general discussion about character builds/ideas, the 2nd more about math and and damage per round output usually)
I haven't played 5e yet but last I heard doing wizard and fighter or warlock can be solid combos
Some folks might use Avrae through Discord, a virtual tabletop's built-in dice roller, a room for dice rolling (I know sites are out there where everyone can see them), on-camera rolls, or just trust the players.
Multiclassing is not a great "beginner' topic as it is a completely optional rule and involves more complexity of rules.
But you don't need to have dice, as digital dice are easy to come by. Google has a built-in roller, for instance.
I know I probably shouldn’t. But it seems fun and I wanna make my first time playing as fun as possible
I see how just trusting players could be problematic if someone’s rolling crit 20’s all day
Then that's a problem with the player, period.

Hey, what’s the saving throw you do for when you are trying to stop being on fire
There is no one rule about being set on fire
For this case let’s say fireball
Fireball doesn’t set you on fire
It does immediate damage, but there is no “burn” effect
Damn I’m think I’m dumb
Read the spell descriptions before asking questions about the spells
When it comes to spells they only do what it says. Some spells can place a condition but it will state in the spell.
The lesson is to read the spell or ability you are wondering about
For this reason ☝️
The basic rules also has a list conditions for further context.
Can you be a dragon rider in DND?
Is possible? Yes
Early in your character? No
What does that mean
You can, but at high levels
There is a ranger subclass called Drake Warden that gives to a dragon companion but you cant ride it until later levels
Damn
sorry to interupt but im very confused about the leveling system
Do rangers only have bows
I believe the quickest path is being a halfling drakewarden ranger.
What are you having trouble with?
Can the dragon companion be an ice breathing dragon
so im playing a barbarian and as per every class you earn new skills as you level up but you through diffrent campaigns do your levels carry over?
Not sure, haven’t played that subclass yet. #character-discussion can give you a better answer if you ask there.
Not through different campaigns as each DMs will have different guidelines and preferences and rulings
I have a question
If my character dies in a campaign or session can I still use them in other games?
Possibly. Check with your Dungeon Master and group.
Sometimes a character is not well suited for a particular setting or adventure
So best to make sure it fits with the kind of D&D game you're playing in.
No, rangers are proficient with all weapons
Read the subclass
Let say it with another group
Well you don’t normally get new skill proficiencies as you level up
Well what if the group is playing a sci-fi themed D&D campaign and your dead character is based on heroic fantasy?
Ok
But to answer your question, you’ll normally make a new character for a new campaign
No
Good night yall
They will need to read the subclass, as it cant be reprinted here
Just one more question if my character dies is it dead for good or can I still use them that is what I’m wandering
It's generally a good idea to run your character ideas by the DM and group as they can help you build something appropriate for the kind of D&D game you'll be playing and they may have certain expectations such as no re-using characters from other games (or they may be totally cool with it).
Sometimes an entire D&D campaign arc can be designed around reviving a dead character
So yeah, just ask the group you're playing with.
Ok thanks you very much that help’s me a lot since I just started
I don't quite know how to start a proper subject, so i will just say that i only joined this server because i am struggling really hard with finding DnD campaigns to join. I've been playing this wonderful RPG game basically my whole life, but lately has been difficult to find new adventures 😭

@zenith needle @cloud nexus hey yous, a good place to get started is going through the links above to get an idea of what the game is about
The Handbooker Helper videos are particularly good if the Basic Rules are a bit too text heavy for you
Thx i appreciate it, im gonna check em out, I thought nobody was talking to me. Cause I picked a class nobody liked
Thank you.
Also, Hi. How are you doing?
Guys what exactly is homebrew?
From what I know it’s something made from scratch
Basically a character, enemy, system, etc. that was made personally, so maybe a DM tweaks the magic system a bit, thats a homebrew, maybe you add a custom race, thats a homebrew
Ohhhhh
they get a bad rap cuz people tend to... obviously... make them OP
like just look at any site that lets you upload homebrews, filled with GOD QUEEN OF FAERUN with 900 hitpoints and 60D20 attacks
I can take him easy
Is a shapeshifter a good homebrew race? Like as the character starts out it has limits but unlocks certain things kinda like magic from sorcerers and stuff (from what I’ve seen so far at least)
He can’t do damage if he doesn’t have dice 😏
@goombg Changeling or Shifter races?
Most of us have no idea what that race is. Maybe ask in #homebrew
Theres already a couple shapeshifting classes in vanilla if that fits your fancy
its better imo to start off making characters in vanilla
No like I made it up now kinda thing
Unofficial content
tho ive never actually played a game so yuhh
Well that isn’t really a complete homebrew race. If you’re new, I wouldn’t recommend homebrewing
Also, that sounds more like a class than a race
Oh ok fair enough
I thought there were already races that did shapeshifting
classes but yes
druids, they take wild forms like owl bears and uh displacer beasts?
whatever those are
and ofc some wizards (transmutation iirc) can do it
What’s the difference between a Dragonborn and a tiefling
Dragonborn is a dragon tiefling is a demon, very simplistically
Oh ok
dragonborns spit fire and get cool resistances and tieflings just kinda are
Yes
The shifter and changeling races
HOT
No
RAW in 5e they can’t wildshape into those
They can only turn into beasts, aka regular animals
The race you are thinking of is called Changeling. That race is printed in Monsters of the Multiverse. The rules for what that can shapechange into and what happens when they do is very clearly outlined in their race’s description. You won’t be able to “unlock more powers” as you level up, unless you have a game feature that specifically says so.
I know they cant widlshape into displacer beasts its a joooke
iirc cant mind flayers do that tho? or am i being dumb
Mind flayers do not have shape change abilities
Theres something that can i have vivid memories of it
There are several monsters that can shape change, but I don’t know of any that change into a displacer beast or owl bear specifically
i think i might have a case of having a dream and forgetting it was a dream
No, you just had the unfortunate case of shifting into our nutcase of reality
well i mean most likely answer was a DM gaslighting me into thinking their homebrew was canon and me just forgetting about it
the DMs in my area are :(
Man was brainwashed
Well hey ive learned to do my research
I know a bit about DND despite never actually being able to play a game of it
cuz the fcking DMs in my area keep cancelling
Why not try online
why do you think im here!!!
im also waiting for a DND tool to get a free mode before i start DMing.. and i would prob prefer to play before making people play lol
I’d say that’s probably the best idea
What “D&D tool” are you referring to? Because the basic rules, online character sheets, digital dice, and online battle maps can all be used for free
Its a VTT specifically optimized for building scenes that i like ALOT
Im willing to pay the price for its map builder over using roll20 which ive had bad experiences with lol
i stg that site has a vendetta against me
I think D&D has a whole just has a vendetta
Well, Owlbear Rodeo is another free option, if you want an alternative.
Ive heard about it but havent checked it out lol
I mean isnt a problem for me but it def will be for players
I mean me being on mobile I prefer owlbear rodeo cause roll 20 does not work for me
My point is, if you want to play D&D for free, there are options out there. Waiting for another product to get a “free version” seems unlikely to happen and will just hold you back
I gotcha, but it is a planned release for a 'seat mode' not to dissimilar to the likes of jackbox or VTTS iirc
i wanna see how that works before dedicating to one specific program
also i do wanna play a single campaign before learning to DM fully
A typical set has: 1 d4, 1 d6, 1 d8, 2 d10, 1 d12, and 1 d20 dice.
My friend put red dice in a jar for healing potions lol
The different shapes (i.e. the different number of sides) yield different probabilities.
yes, the sides do matter, for example D4 = 4 sides numbered 1-5, D20 = 20 sides numbered 1-20
1d4 has a 25% chance of getting any one of its numbers.
ignore the fact that i typed 1-5
1d20 has a 5% chance for the same.
Im sadly flat broke and am new like ive never played
Good news, then: you don't need money to play.
Are you asking about irregularly shaped dice that have the same number if sides as a normal one? Like a top style die for example?
They would be unfair
Not necessarily.
Ohh I see
It's only unfair if it changes the odds of rolling any given number.
Yes
I dont have dice minus a bunch of d6
You can roll digital dice online for free.
^
Cool
theres also programs that do rolls for you so you dont even have to do the math
Our DM said sometimes he’d prefer us to not bring our phones and stuff
So long as a die has the number of sides required (exactly), and an equal probability of landing on each result, then the shape of the die does not matter
Did your DM tell you to bring your own die?
Okay thank you
No, but it’s still nice to bring some just in case
Also I’m thinking about becoming a DM too
just bring a basic set if you really need to, what oldmanyellingatclouds provided a bit ago
Okay thank you all
Well if you're doing it purely IRL be ready to fork over some cash for books haha
😨
You can get the basic rules online for free. If you really can’t access an electronic device while playing, I suppose you could print them out
this too
That would be a lot of pages though
Okay I’ll try that, thank you
And a lot of ink
If you don’t want to buy the books I recommend going and checking out the basic rules and seeing if you like D&D
I actually found out recently my uncle was a huge DND nerd back in the day, and im tryna get his books
Oh nice, I just want to let you know that D&D 5e is the current system and he might not have a current system
Just wanted to let you know
Depends on how long ago “back in the day” was. The current version of D&D is 5e, which came out in 2014. Rule books from before then would be for a different edition, which is basically a different game entirely
Oh he absolutely does not, best case scenario its 3.5e (if im calling it correctly)
So i do have a character but id need to run him by an expert
i dont know the exact year, ill be able to tell when i have them on my hands
Oh nice, 3.5e has a pretty big fan base so you can probably find players
Unless you want to play the older version, non-5e rule books won’t help you at all
yeah!! ive heard
thats my plan when i move, my current area all the DMs are kinda :(
If you’d like help with your character, #character-discussion is the best place to share it and get feedback and advice on that
I personally have never played 3.5e but I know that it still is incredibly popular so I hope you have a great time with it
something about mutliclassing iirc
or was it customization freedom?
ah whatever thats saying pretty much the same thing
If you want to talk about 3.5e, please do so in #dnd-elder-editions This server is for 5e, and this channel is to help people learn how to play 5e

Guys what is optimisation
By choosing the best options
I'd add that it's focussing on being good at a particular thing, rather than broad good-ness
By playing and building a character intelligently
Eh, not really. The most optimised characters are good at a variety of things
If you build a character to be optimised for making massive charisma checks, you're unavoidably going to lose out (at least a little) in combat imo
Yes, but that’s a specifically optimised characters. A generally optimised character is still optimised, and will be good at a variety of things
ill agree to disagree
optimizing is by definition just doing things effectively. Min-Maxing is the better term for maximizing some traits to the detriment of others.
plenty of setups can be optimized without making them worse at anything
Where can I find an easy to fill out character sheet? It’s my first character and I just want a simple thing so I can learn how to do it
you can use dnd beyond https://www.dndbeyond.com/
its pretty easy to use but if you do custom charcter races you have to make them
I just made my first dnd character
And I dont know what to do now ^w^
I mean like the rules and stuff
I did my character sheet!
Dose anyone have a space in there dnd campain using dnd beyond
good odds that they're asking for content sharing
Have you looks IRL in the uk or are you just looking in this server
Cause there is a whole world of DnD games available and advertised outside this place

I do know a UK centric westmarch server that I DM for, if you're up for it...

Hello
Hey
Can you tell me what role does fit a mercenary or a king
Because my character is kind of like a mercenary
Well he started from being a mercenary and after that became a king
If you want to know how I can tell you
I think barbarian or fighter would best describe your character
He used to be a fighter
well then, I guess he's a fighter
Used to be a fighter now he's a king
are you asking about subclass or some such?
the same points apply
you could go for Eldritch Knight to represent having access to libraries of magic, perhaps?
Saying your character was a king is a big thing for a character
agreed
usually games start at the 'local heroes, killed rats in basement' tier
yeah, that also bears very heavy mentioning
if starting at level 1, declaring yourself a king is a bold choice
even the noble background is just like, 300gp and that's it other than being able to navigate politics
So king
fifteen gp
actually having the power of a kingdom is well outside of PC backstory
I coulda sworn it was 300. 300gp sticks out to me from somewhere. Huh.
Maybe a king being striped of his power would be a great back story for your character instead
But I don't see the role King
there's no "role" in DND
aye. You can totally have a character who believes that he was once a king, and maybe even pull it off in an interesting enough way that you don't get kicked, but no DM's gonna let you play an actual king
and as said, that wouldn't be a thing for a player character considering how much more power that associates
For me I do have a long back story
however, there is the 'ruined' background from the book of many things
you were once a king, then something brought your life to ruin and shambles, now you're at the bottom again
Remember it has to fit into a story being processed and planned by another person
and presumed significance in the story, and significance of impact on the DM's world. A king going missing is no small thing
And a king for some reason hunting rats in a basement is odd
Do you want the longer version of the short one
this is not necessarily a good thing
they aren't asking for your backstory, from what I can tell. You asked for advice, we gave it, and you seem to be disregarding it
Is for my king
still, not necessarily a good thing
and having been a king, or remaining a king, also, isn't necessarily a good thing as far as playing DND with a party of other people
Keeping it simple for a tier 1 (levels 1 to 4) start, will fit. Folk Hero is something like "fended off the wolves from burt's farm and saved the annual pumpkin festival"
having a literal king in the same party is a bit dissonant
plus it's up to the DM if you can be a king, anyway
Okay so I use my assassin
Having your characters backstory be more powerful than a lvl1 PC is bad because when high king Gerald the third ruler of the Severn kingdoms heir to the orbs of power is one shoted by a goblin it’s not in fitting with the game
Hmmm
If your set on having some royal lineage, say if you were the last of your line heir to the throne but your kingdom is no more or been taken over. It fits with a noble background and isn’t over powered as you don’t have a kingdoms resources behind you to call on for aid
Guys what is heroforge
3d model creation tool
Oh ok
A simple internet search can answer some of these non-D&D questions faster than we can...
even just using it for free is very helpful, you can do color, decals, and just take a screenshot of it. It's a very nice option for the virtual tabletop user - basically all of my characters, even some NPCs in a campaign I run, have been made via heroforge since I couldn't find art to represent them
Yeah but I’m always scared that something else might come up because it’s happened before and I’m scarred 💀
I’d rather wait and get an answer that I know is probably accurate than search the wrong thing and be way more confused 😭
Fair enough! Also we have a channel devoted to folks D&D Heroforge designs: #dnd-heroforge-etc
Yeah I saw it and I was wondering what it was hence why I asked
What does "+6 to hit" mean?
it means when they make an attack roll, they add 6 to their d20 roll, and that increases their chance of hitting the target
basically, higher is better for whoever's doing it
Ahhhh, got it. Thanks!
Attack rolls are a 'does your attack do damage and take effect' thing, and armor class is a 'how difficult is it for attacks to do damage and take effect vs you'
Many newcomers confuse it for reducing damage (which isn't an infeasible misconception, but it's still a mistake :P)
Is the "basic rules" section of D&D beyond just the SRD?
If so, I think it's pretty neat how they formatted it and added pictures and such!
it's a combination of a few things and formatted nicely
The free basic rules includes the SRD and things that D&D gave them permission to include (before they were bought by D&D)
so I don't need to look at the actual SRD pdf at all?
there was a discussion yonks ago about all the different things DDB's BR includes
I believe you don't need to, that you're correct.
that's awesome
Only if you want to look at the PDF version really.
I think DDB's BR includes everything SRD (just formatted for players and dms reading rules and not legalese for lawyers)
but yes, it is neat
hi so im running a oneshot that maybe will go into an entire campaign but i dont really know how to balance it around the party as we only have backliners (a wizard, warlock and a rogeu)
the oneshot is death house from curse of strahd
What makes you call it a one shot if it's going into a campaign?
Doesn't that just make it the first session(s) of a campaign?
i was planing on making it a oneshot and if the players liked it a campaign we agreed to that at the start since i wasnt sure if i could be a good dm
laugh maniacally about how screwed the players are then watch as they either die or defy all odds and survive just to spite you
XD
How does one, uh, not be super nervous when joining a group?
You'll get used to it, the first time always gets you jumbly
that's the neat part, you don't
in all seriousness, just accept it's fine - you're not 'weird' for feeling that way. It can be exciting, after all!
it's very much out of my comfort zone but I do want to play
Also I rolled all 18's on my first character
take it from someone who's joined so many campaigns that ended up going bad (which is why i never played) theres no harm in asking
asking what?
Lol its up to the DM if they make you roll or whatever, but i think they gunna make you reroll with that
to join
That said it's also an indicator that you're concerned about how they're going to feel, which IMO is better than not caring about how others feel. For example, the nervous newcomer doesn't strut around like they own the place.
oh haha
I actually feel really weird having such high stats ;-;
I just wanna be a basic human fighter but the DM seemed to take those rolls
god-rolls are fun, but need to be in front of the DM's eyes
You can always manually allocate, in most games ive been in tho the DM wants us to make new characters or reroll stats
You/your DM rolled 6/6/6/x six times and you're playing a non-variant human?
hey my first ever roll was a nat 20 persuasion check for a free beer, it happens xD
That's not the same
my DM rolled them
and they were actually all 6/6/6/6
which is unbelievable except she showed me the screenshot of her rolling it from Avrae
That is unbelieveable
In the sense I do not believe that there was some error on your DMs part
The probability of that is 2.11 x10 ^ -17 percent
yeah...
Maybe they were using non-congruent dice xD
she used the Avrae bot
that sounds like a glitch tbh but if you and she are cool with it, great
She let me take 2 of the stats down to 11
because I felt uncomfortable with those stats being so high lol
that's very decent of you
because high rolls like that would propel you way ahead of what most characters could hope to achieve in 20 levels, let alone from level 1
Yeah and also it's my first game and those stats are intimidating
it's a heck of a way to get into the hobby
it's either a good sign or it means I've used up all my luck for the rest of my D&D future
It sounds like either they made a mistake in the command they used, or, well, they're being less than honest
oh...
Well that one's clearly fudged because not all the sixes are bold. 😛
well idk how to feel
They may also have their !servsettings configured in such a way that it only allows all 6's.
on randchar?
well idk what to do about it
Ask them
Tell them “I’m not accepting this roll and you need to do this where I can verify it”
Nah, don't go making demands
Going on the offensive is a good way to put someone on the defensive
I mean very obviously you shouldn’t accept it at face value and do some digging
Just say "I find it increadibly unlikely that you actually rolled those results, and it seems odd you'd send a screenshot rather than just roll in a channel I can access. I'd like to roll my stats again please"
they let me re-roll
Well that's good you were able to resolve this strange and suspicious situation so quickly
I did
Ultimately it doesn't matter as long as it was done in a shared channel
- Listen to the DM and the other players—try not to interrupt, be respectful, and generally be someone others want to hang with. Remember that it's a team game and the party is the main character, not your character specifically.
- Take notes. If you don't know what to take notes on, important people, places, and/or things is a good start.
- Thank the DM.
- Read over what your character can do ahead of time if possible. Know their abilities and how they work. Relatedly, try to minimize how long your turn takes without rushing.
- When there's a problem or a spot of confusion, ask. The game relies on communication, so don't be afraid to request clarification (or empathy or...).
- It's a game; no one wins by getting things "right." Remember to have fun (but not at the expense of anyone else at the table)!
- "It's what my character would do" to justify bad behavior is still bad behavior. Make sure your character wants to participate in the adventure and cooperate with the other players, even if they do so resentfully or whatever.
Hey everybody, I am new to dnd. Can someone explain what dnd is and everything in general about it. How to play, characters, map(if there is).

Thanks, will read it
friends, how do i explain dnd to someone who doesnt know anything about the game
At its most basic, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
Most of you play just a single character in that story.
Writing a book with friends is how i (jokingly) describe it lol
But one person, as the Dungeon Master, controls everything else: the world and the rest of its inhabitants.
you tell a story with a group of friends and let dice decide about failure and success
The game rules and the random roll of the dice help give shape to that story.
Alternatively... just send them this.

Hi! I'm new
Where can I learn the basics of DnD and where can I play?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

The basics are covered above. Where you can play is dependent on the group you join. Some folks play in person, some create a Discord server, and others use a platform like Roll20 or Foundry. Once you know the rules, you can start your search for a group at #find-a-game, following the instructions there.
Thanks!

Hey hey! I’m a new player looking to join my first campaign!
Hi! I have limited experience with dungeons and dragons campaigns, I am looking for a new campaign to join on D&D Beyond
Start with reading through #find-a-game to begin your search!

That post goes over the basics of playing online. The pinned messages in this channel have good beginner resources to acquaint you with the game rules and such.
Thank you!!!
@harsh fjord there is no option for dark elf race?
On D&D Beyond? You need to purchase the race individually, the book it's contained in, or be in a campaign with someone who has digital access and has enabled sharing. It isn't part of the free Basic Rules.
Also, no need to ping specific folks. Anyone can answer a question like that. Just for future reference!
Okie
D&D Beyond is just a toolset where you can buy digital content from the various books. It can be more convenient than lugging a bunch of hardcovers around.
Gotta say I wasn't expecting to have to buy the race I wanted to be 😅😆
Hello, I've just joined and would to learn how to play D&D. Know anyone I can talk to for this?
Only some of the content is freely available. Even if online play didn't exist, someone would still need to buy it for you to use it.
Check the pinned messages for good beginner resources! Someone also posted them below. ⬇️

So I'll have to invest if I wanna play the character I have in mind
You can get the race alone for like $2.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Alternatively, play with someone who has access to the content.
Okie I'll get around to it eventually!! Kinda feeling the waters RN I have been wanting to play but never had friends or known anyone into it
Well, we've got a big community here, so hopefully you find some folks to game with!

Okay so I’m making tiefling I’m at selecting language. If I correct, tieflings native tongue is abyssal and something else. Right? Was thinking of celestial as 2nd language. But I wanna know is there a most common language overall?
Common is the most common, generally, but the best person to answer that question is your DM. If you don't have a DM yet, you're not guaranteed to be able to use the character you're making now, but ideally they'll work with you to make the character fit the game.
Ahh okay thanks I shall wait then.
Gonna play a dnd game at Megacon sometime when I get there
All characters start with Common, so you don't have to worry about that.
Tieflings typically know Infernal. Infernal is the language of devils, while abyssal is the language of demons.
The difference between them is there's an endless war between them, where devils are lawful and demons are chaotic, so it's a strict disciplined army versus a chaotic horde.
I have a question can I give my character a weapon with like a magic circle that gives it power like an ice axe
Ask your DM - they have to make sure everything is reasonably balanced in their game
Typically it's the DM and not the players who give out magic items.
so um me and my friend been intrested into learning dnd but we dont know where to start

going through the above links can be a great way to learn the basics before diving in 🙂
no need to memorise, but just getting a general gist and knowing where to go when you need a ruling is very useful
I played one game but I really don't know what's going on and it was a bit of a jokey one, any advice for someone just starting out? I want to play a goliath paladin I made since I've always liked the tank roles that can take the hits for others
If you've played before it wouldn't hurt to give the rules another once over (see links from the dyno bot above), otherwise if you've already had some playing experience I see no reason why you shouldn't find a new campaign to join
Are you looking to play online or in person?
Probably online, but idk when I can play since my work schedule changes every week and I sometimes don't get home till 8.30pm, plus I'm from England and I think the majority of players are from the US
