Flavor is free 🙂
Heheh
at the end of the day it's all about convicting DMs right
@lyric fjord when you are ready #find-a-game
With dnd you'll never stop learning
"fudge"
I think I got conffused
By what?
is there a way to look for players and a dm at the same time?
Are you building a D&D server + community? You could use #looking-for-community. As Taz noted, read #find-a-game as it explains things.
no i was just looking for a one time group to play with for a short campaign
do i need to make a server to make a community
If you need DMs and Players that sounds like building a community to me.
hey yall i was wondering if anyone could explain some basics too me

I’m currently using it :)) but thank you
What are your questions exactly? I can’t promise I have the answer but I can try.
is there anyone here who is an aspiring new DM Im trying to make a small party and would like another new Dm to help me take charge of it
just really how the dice roles work and what the diffrent dies are for
d20s are the only dice that really have fixed uses. They’re what you roll for saving throws, ability checks, and attack rolls
All the other dice are used when a feature or rule tells you to
Ight, Multible spells include a mutitude of dice so some spells tell what dice you need for them
a d12 is normaly for the DM to use or Great Weapon Damage
and the d20 is to see if you do something correctly
the rest are out the window
I’m new new to the game but I ran a game for my family and enjoyed DMing I don’t know if I’d be a good fit for you or not.
d8 are rapiers and one handed longswords
d10 are polearms and two handed longswords
d12 are great weapons
That’s not comprehensive btw. Just a rough indication
As long as you got a good vibe and is respectful then you'll be perfect Dm me if your interested
Something like the fireball spell uses 8d6 for damage
Do you understand dice notation, for example what 4d6 means?
i do not sadly
The d6 means it's a six-sided dice. The 4 before it means you roll 4 times.
So 4d6 means you roll a six-sided dice four times
In D&D you use a range of multi-sided dice. The most used is the d20 which is used for things like attack rolls or saves.
Or 4 six sided dice
Then you sum the results

Anything specific? 🤔
No not really
Does anyone have any recommended stores to buy dices
My mom said she’ll order some next month, but just in case there are cheaper alternatives
Dice emporium for cheap in bulk
Okay thank you
Do I have to study frst before I play dnd or can I just go in raw
You should read over at least some of the rules if you're trying to play with strangers. If you're playing with friends who are learning alongside you, you can just try playing without much prep (though it might be bumpy).
ok ty
Hello!
hey
Is d&d an expensive game?
Try to learn at least how to make ability rolls, attacks and what your character does! You can learn everything else in the way
The Basic Rules are free and give you enough to play for a good long while.
I can find rules online?
Yep, see the links below!

thanks
Can you play dnd onljne?
?tag new online
I p sure since this is where you go to play it online lol
You can. The article above gives a nice rundown.
I thought this discord is just a guide lol
It's a place for discussion and we have channels to find folks to play with, but no games are hosted here.
So where do find people to play with?
Whats the difference between community and traditional?
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.
[Find out more](#al-rules-compendium message)
Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
• #al-admin-questions — Ask the AL Admins questions
• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
A community game is a rotating group with rotating DMs typically doing one-off adventures in a living world, sort of like an MMO. A traditional game is one group with one DM over the course of an adventure.
Im guessing d&d games can take years to end?
It can. Or it could be one session. It varies.
It's a social game so it depends on the DM, the campaign, and the players and the internal and external factors around each of the three
It can take one session (these are called one-shots).
They can take a few sessions (typically short adventures).
Campaigns could be several years (or even decades) long.
My current campaign I'm running has been going for two years and will be at least another two years.
Oh ok
I know someone who ran a single campaign for over two decades
That’s a very extreme case tho
I think most campaigns are finished around a year, either actually completing to the end or things fall apart due to real-life circumstances.
Whats a session 0 i figure its a getting to know each other kinda thing but what do you guys usually d
Depends on the DM. But normally explain the base of the campaign, like the world, ambiance, if they use special rules or what kind of content will contain the campaign and if everyone is okay with that
Some people use session 0 to help on character creation.
And others don't even use it. I highly recommend it tho.
Yeah, it'll hopefully avoid future headaches, especially to weed out potential problematic behaviour.
what do paid games mean? I don't really understand 😅
oooh okay thanks 😊
what should I do when my time zone is in hkt? 🥲
I haven't played any games before. how do you guys plan when you guys are in different time zones?
Thats just part of the process
Organizing a game is like organizing any group activity
You could ask everyone for their availability and work with the group to set a date. Don't try to handle all of that alone tho
Is the psychical D&D handbook really needed
no, you can play purely with the free online materials
Okay thank you
Its more important the rules and stuff it has. You don't rlly need the psychical version. Useful in person but that more of a tool than a necessity
Ohhh I see, thank you
Do we have a new dm help channel lol?
#dm-discussion could probably help you out..
Alrighty thanks calamity
Hello, I have literally never touched dnd and am scared to join any game and ruining it from being dumb. Also are you supposed to go in with a fully built character you made (because I don’t know what any of them do/are), a character concept or you just start from scratch? any tips of where to look would be nice 🙂
You should't mind how much you know, we all started at that point. A lot of DMs would teach you as you play! so don't worry.
Also if you are learning you can always ask the Dungeon Master for help, like making your character, easier ways to play or ideas for it!
Thanks, also to find a game do I go to looking for players, or looking for dm because don’t you need both?
Check #find-a-game and read the instructions there.
Thanks 🙏
Read the free Basic Rules. Learn how to create a character but don't be attached to it because your (future) DM may ask you to create a new one from scratch.
Alright 👍
How do you determine the number of prepared spells you can have?
What class?
Normally its your casting ability modifier + your lvl on that class
bard
The spellcasting feature of your class description will tell you
how do your determined spell casting ability modifier?
The spellcasting feature of your class description will tell you that
On the description of the class
Bard, sorcerer and Warlock are Charisma for example
thank you
Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
You know four 1st-level spells of your choice from the bard spell list.
The Spells Known column of the Bard table shows when you learn more bard spells of your choice. https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard
When I try to use "persuasion", what am I rolling against ? "Passive Insight" ?
What if the other person is weary of me ? Do they roll for "Insight" against my "persuasion" ?
The dm will set the DC of the check
The DM will set a DC for a persuasion roll
Any suggestions how to play dnd like rules, characters, people important, different races, different classes, etc
I'm waiting for a game to join
Read the basic rules. They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
me too stranger
Even if the other person is a pc ? Asking on behalf of my dm 😶🌫️
If the other person is a player and you're using persuasion I think the other player would roll an insight check
Why you trying to persuade a party member?
A lot of DMs don't roll for that and let the players decide what happens instead
Our pcs are meeting for the first time and one of them has been accused of being a murderer
So he needs to persuade us (who are weary of suspected criminal) that he is innocent
So rolled persuasion needs to be higher than rolled Insight?
Correct
Thank you
Thanks 😊 but I was talking about like a book
The basic rules are a book
Hi
Hello
Hi I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be talking about here I joined cause I played dnd beyond with 2 friends irl and I really liked it but now idk if they wanna play anymore so um yeah I just wanna play dnd with peeps sometime
We have #find-a-game for info on online gaming
0h ok thanks u
Or visit your friendly local game store to see if they have any games going
What's a plasmoid
In oversimplified terms: a living ooze
Interesting... Can It go through cracks
That seems... Overpowered
Plasmoid monk
Run around naked giving people gooey best downs
Beat downs
monk with nothing to their name other than their own matter
Their other abilities make them better as barbarians or rogues
Open palm monk
A Pla-nk ?
Just to confirm, a weapon with reach is probably best for "tunnel fighter" fighting style, right ?
Tunnel fighter is UA so may not be allowed at most tables
Yeah probably
Fighting in a tunnel, maybe. Get someone to throw out caltrops ahead of you, stand and stab, could buy you more time to attack before the enemy get to melee.
DM allowed it because it didn't give me any extra modifiers like defense, duelling or great weapon fighting and the other fighting styles didn't fit according to my backstory.
👍
Oh good idea if I ever get into a fight in a tunnel
UA material is outside the scope of this channel, though
DM also said that there'll be "more of role-playing than fighting so it doesn't matter".
Local game store?
Place where they sell board games nerdy stuff and people hang out playing DnD, mtg war games etc
Ohhhh I read it as "our local game store"
I have a question
Do people here like do dnd sessions using vc?
A lot of people use discord VC to play D&D, yeah
If you're asking if D&D games are run here, in this server? No, they're not
Uh I got confused
If I'm searching for a game to join as a player, should I go to "looking for dm" or should I go to "looking for player" ?
(Trying to join an existing group that's looking for players)
You should look in #looking-for-players or post in #750812887697588356
I see cause I'd prefer to play that way lol
You'd prefer to play on this server?
I'd also like that lol
No I Mena playing in vc
Many people play that way
*mean
it's very common
Looking for players it is.
Thank you
Ok thats good
What does "foundry" mean in playstyle ?
Oh
If an ability does 2d6 damage and crits, is it straight up just one roll and multiplied by 4, or traditionally 4 single rolls instead?
There's no multiplying of dice results at all, let alone by 4
2d6 means roll two dice and sum the result
On a crit, you'd roll four dice and sum the result
Ah, k
Ight
Ive found like 2 groups that already that are pretty welcoming so it shouldnt be hard
Things like that will mostly come down to your DM and your personal preferences. Your paladin’s oath is technically a part of their subclass features, but it’s also most just there as flavor, so changing it does not have a mechanical impact on how the subclass is played. You can talk to your DM about reflavoring things however you like
if i finished creating my character, can i start playing or is there still something to do before i start playing ?
Probably yeah, but you can have your DM read through it, and make sure it fits with the campaign
ok thx
Hey, how's everyone doing? I'm new to dnd
Well, that depends on what you mean exactly. You can look for a group to join, but you don’t need to have a character made before doing that. In fact, it’s generally best practice to make your character after joining a group, because they might have unique rules or lore or whatever. That being said, it’s not a bad thing to make a character beforehand. You just have to understand that some changes may be required.
If you have a group, and your first session is scheduled and all that, then having your character made is really all you need. Just make sure you have at least some familiarity with the rest of the rules
Nice to meet ya DeerMan
ok thx
Oh, well there is an official Paladin oath that is basically that, already. It’s called Oath of Vengeance
Yes the oaths in the books are a rough guide so if you want to change them go for it (subject to DM approval)

Those links should get you going. If you have specific questions, do ask!
What's the difference between rolling a 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20? (As in how to respond to a character rolling a 5 vs a 10 vs a 15
Lower roll bad?
Higher roll good?
Usually a roll will be a binary outcome; success or failure
So what they specifically roll typically doesn't matter as much as whether they succeeded or failed at meeting the DC/beating the AC/making the save
Some DM’s gauge such things not on binaries, but rather in a sort of “quality”, but not for things like attacks, or some checks- it’s not really relevant, but you could consider it- not much, though.
That's getting into an optional rule (degrees of success) which is more of a #dm-discussion thing
yeah, and I’m not really a huge fan of it, but I think it definitely has merit in some places
I was kinda asking like how successfull or how badly a skill check goes at those numbers
It's success or failure by default
Why not roll a 1d2 instead?
Because that's not how probability works.....
1d2 gives you a 50% chance of success or failure that is fixed across all creatures
1d20 + modifiers against a variable DC/AC lets you vary the probality across participants
If a player rolls a 12 how much different would that be from an 18?
If the DC is 10 or 20, not at all
If the DC is 15, the difference between success and failure
If you want to use degrees of success, that's an optional rule found in the Dungeon Master's Guide. You can discuss that in #dm-discussion
What's DC?
Difficulty Class; it's the number you have to meet or beat on an ability check or saving throw
ty
Good explanation on all that stuff, it’s nice to see people helping the new guys out as well as you- good on you man
I’m a DND player (who hasn’t been to an actual session) in middle school (I won’t say my age) and I plan on making a D&D club
How long should DND sessions last?
I most likely will be making it an after school club btw
Typical sessions last for 2-4 hours
not that they can’t last longer, but for after school they likely shouldn’t. I’ve played for 10 or more hours before, but in middle school you’d likely have to, obviously, come back home eventually
And that’s generally a sort of extreme length, but it’s more just about how long people can, and want to, play.
Anything more than 4 hours is considered to be a “long” session by most people’s standards, but yes there are people that play for longer.
This is just the average
So I can't seem to find a channel for new DMs asking for help. Is there one available
Hello, I am brand new to DnD and have never played before. I get the basic premise of how to play but is their anywhere I can go to get some help in joining my first online experience of the game 🙂

Thank you very much 😄
Hello there! I'm Dyto, new to dnd, got to lvl 10 in a partial campaign I was a part of irl and would like to get back into in online using dnd beyond. Or roll20. Either way I'm hoping to find experienced players I can vibe with and learn more.
Welcome! This channel is for new players to ask questions so if you have any, ask away.
If you're looking for a group/game to join...
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Damn the character customisation stuff is confusing 😵💫
What are you having difficulty with?
I get the leveling system and race and whatnot but then it mentions stuff about campaign specific stuff, encumbrance ect. Are these things I change per campaign do I just do?
Also is it common courtesy to have a character ready for a campaign? I’ve never done one before and wanna be prepared to find one
Having a basic idea of what you want to play is fine, coming up with character concepts is a good way to learn how to build PCs
Get the basics of a character done and they can be altered to fit most games
I get what I want my characters class to be, what skill points to have and what I want their backstory to be so is that kind of all I need?
Yeah I’d keep the backstory vague as in don’t name places and don’t let it be more powerful than a lvl 1 character
Yeah that’s all good then, is there any specific channel for DM’s hosting games that allow for brand new players?
Thank you
Have a look through #looking-for-players see if any games look like something your interested in and respond in the thread under the ad
It’s not a quick thing to find a game
That makes sense that it’s not, scheduling and whatnot. If I happen to have friends that wanna learn the game too with an experienced DM, is that something that needs payed for or are people usually happy to do that?
It varies.
Okay I can do that, thank you
Hey. So random question. Recently got into Baldurs gate and i’m loving it. Highkey want to dabble in D&D but I have no idea where to start. And I kinda have a fear that I’m gonna join my first ever game and ruin it because I have no clue what I’m doing. Are people quite nice to newbies lmfao?

That link may help. It's hard to generalize about people (since that's what we're dealing with), but folks who love a hobby do tend to want other people to love it, so newcomers might be welcomed in many cases.
The pinned messages can help orient you to the game more.
depends, most groups can be around 2-4 hours, some groups (me included) can go up to 10 hours possibly
I’ll have a read. Thank you! I just don’t want to get into my first game and ruin other people’s experiences just bc I’m so new to it
If you have other questions along the way, do ask!
Thank you 😊😊
dw! most ppl are actually excited to have new players! it's a little hard at the start obviously because of the learning curve but ppl shouldnt turn you away just because youre new
That’s a good point. I roughly know what i’m doing due to Baldurs gate. Like the situation with dices, different classes and races, etc. Guess I just need to go for it and find a game. No point worrying about it haha
yeah dw it'll be fun!
in the dnd beyond creator there should be an option fr beginners
to help
Reading the rules or watching some videos will help. Not all tables will be cool with someone who did no prior research. (Like I'm pretty chill, but if I were running a game for strangers, I'd want them to have done some legwork beforehand.)
Oh definitely. like if i was joining someone’s game id 100% do research beforehand. i wouldn’t want to keep asking questions i didn’t have to i guess
Hello everyone i recently got a dungeons & dragons starter kit but i'm still lost on how to play if someone would be willing to go over the rules with me in more detail i would greatly appreciate it please and thank you
What’s one specific rule you wanted help with, to start?
i dont understand how the character sheets work
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet, at least the first four chapters?
yes i did but im the kind of person that learns better from vc and calls
i watched videos too but i dont know
Well, we can't give one-on-one tutorials because dozens of new players join this server every day. You will have to read the Basic Rules and/or watch the tutorial videos at your own pace.
If there's something you have trouble understanding then ask here. We are more willing to help.
i understand thanks anyways ill let you know if i have any questions
If I am a new player playing with all new players should I look for a more engaging story or a more funny story
That is totally up to whatever you and those fellow players enjoy. It’s totally personal preference
That's up to your DM on what kind of adventure they have planned.
Well I am trying to be the dm
Then talk with your players on what they like
Okay I will, one more thing should the session 0 be soon when the campaign is going to start or when the campaign is still a work in progress
Session 0, as the name implies, is before the first session of the adventure/campaign.
That said, you can have multiple session 0s in the middle of a campaign... let refresher courses to your players on your house rules, social contract, boundaries, etc.
If you need DMing advice head on over to #dm-discussion
Yep multiple session 0 can do a lot help improve a campaign.
Over the course of several sessions, the group can review what works and what doesn’t to make changes to better suit the table’s preferences.
Communication is key to a healthy game table.
Hi Guys, I am new to DND and DND and beyond, and I was hoping I could get some help with some content I just purchased
I have a character, and I have just reached level 4 in our campaign. In doing so, I purchased a feat individually from Planescape, and am trying to add that feat to my character builder screen. It wont pop up though under add feat
sometimes dnd beyond is a little slow to add new things such as newly bought features or homebrew
just give it a bit and refresh
if it doesnt work make sure that you have the correct things clicked on in the first screen of dnd character creator and make sure the feat is also not just specificed for one class or race
Nothing against multiple meetings before the campaign. Do whatever it takes to communicate/prepare
okay, it does actually say a prerequisite is the Evil Outer Planes Feat, I am trying to get Baleful Scion. So i suppose I need to buy the prereq feat... oops i missed that detail lol
lol
thanks though! sorry am noob
no dw all good! everybody had to learn at some point
what are good visual things to learn from. like youtube, who does a good job explaining everything?
What do you want to learn?
the Handbooker Helper series is good
everything lol

You can find it on the DMs guild website
what're considered low and high HIT values?
is +3 low? is +6 high?
is +12 bonkers?
so +5 is a decent accuracy value of a move?
Oh hit, i thought you wrote INT
It scales by level and tier of play
When you start your proficiency is +2 and your primary ability should be +5
Therefore in tier 1 you should have +5 to hit
how do I see what's considered high/low accuracy at levels 1, 5, 10, etc?
Your proficiency will increase ar certain intervals and your primary stat is expected to increase
Also, there are magic items and features that will increase your accuracy
You really should have your main stat to 18 by lev 4
dnd also features abilities that requires a target to make a saving throw
I used DND beyond to help calculate my stats, and I just wanted to ask if they are accurate (I know I asked this before, but just to be sure)
As long as you’re not overwriting your stats, it should work without issue.
Alright thank you
Also my friend is a necromancer, but he can’t find that role in DND beyond, so should they just go with choosing Wizard for class?
School of Necromancy is a wizard subclass
(thematically, you can also play a Cleric, a paladin, a warlock or even a Druid as necromancer) but the main "necromancer" is indeed the School of necromancy wizard
You can double check, its just add/subtract
if I understand correctly, moves should be near guaranteed? (assuming accuracy is rolled with a d20)
Hey I have a question what do my party and I do if everyone dies
not really. An 18 in your main stat just means you have +4 from your stat
Okay so, as someone new to D&D and TTRPGs... I plan to be both a player and a DM, and I'd like to have D&D in my repertoire as it is the most popular TTRPG, however, I do not really want to support Hasbro. What books are "required" if any? Should I buy the base rulebooks just so any players who come to my table who don't have them can read them? Just curious.
that depends on what the DM has planned and what you wanna do. sometimes, the campaign is just over and you start with a new story and new characters. sometimes the same story continues but you play a new group. sometimes, the characters will get revived or continue in the afterlife
Ok
the basic rules are free
I was just wondering if I should get the PHB just so my players can read it
if they don't have it
I mean thats not a bad idea but if you dont want to give Hasbro money, then thats would be conflict, right?
sure, then get the PHB secondhand
I was just wondering which ones are a good idea to have, even if they're not per say required
just for referencing or maybe teaching good ways to be a DM or w/e
Well as DM, I say PHB and DMG are must haves. then afterwards, Xanathars, Tashas and monster of the multiverse have the most stuff for you and and your players
So PHB and DMG are the only ones that I really need
I was wondering how useful DMG was
technically, you can do with just the basic rules, but both do have a lot of useful stuff
the DMG is a bit of a mess structurally
oh, yikes 😭
but it does contain a lot of good stuff, you just have to find it
and then I guess I could bring my laptop to any game if I need to reference any oddly specific things
I always DM with a laptop anyway
makes sense
is there anyone here who is an aspiring new DM Im trying to make a small party and would like another new Dm to help me take charge of it
can probably hide it behind the DM screen to not ruin the immersion 😆
I'm not a dm but are you cool if I want to join your party? I've never played DND before
yeah of course
You can make a post in #750812887697588356
DM me
cool
Just keep in mind it’s done by a bot for you.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.
sure
ok sorry
Hello, everyone!
I have a question - would a cleric still have their divine powers, if somewhere deep inside they want to take place of their god? Like, one day they started to feel, that they can do better, and got an impossible idea to replace their patron god.
That would depend on how the DM wants to handle things.
Its entirely up to your DM how your deity would respond to such ideas. I think it could be interesting if the god specifically blessed your character with divine magic because they want someone to replace them one day. Kind of liking finding a protege so they can go retire
So, it's a DMs interpretation kind of thing. Thanks
Knowing what deity is my clerics patron, they, most likely, may keep their powers as a dare ahah
Can anyone tell me like what the base score means for d&d beyond? I made my first character on it and I have no clue what the 14 under my strength means
Sure.
Base score refers to the ability scores assigned at level 1. This would be strength, dexterity, constitution, wisdom, intelligence, charisma .
Anyone got a checklist or a way to know if you're ready for your first dnd game or not? (As dm)
14 strength specifically means that you get to add +2 to any dice result in which you’re using strength.
Okay, I think I'm picking up on this
There is no checklist other than a desire to run a game and have fun with friends (or soon to be friends?)
14 is your strength score
that means your strength modifier, what you actually use most of the time, is +2
Is CHA important for a ranger?
Not really
It doesn't hurt but dexterity and wisdom are your main bread and butter for Rangers
I'm still slightly confused but what I'm getting at is that the base score really just tells me how much I add to a roll?
Im sorry im very Slow
Should I keep my INT on a lower scale since I’m not a wizard?
the base score is mostly a holdover from old editions
at this point the modifier is what you care about
the base score just determines the modifier
for a ranger its not that important, yeah
And depending on what specific things your character is doing, you can add other bonuses to the dice result.
at level 1 as a ranger, you should focus on 16 dex, 14 wis, and 14 con. then do whatever you want with the rest of the stats
Alrighty! I'm gonna hope I can figure things out from here
(assuming you're attacking with dex, which most rangers will be)

Alright thank you I had my int being the third lowest and my strength being the second lowest but I switch them
that sounds abt right
what was your lowest? cha?
Yes
k
But what could happen is the players see the first enemies or see the first dungeon and do sum completely unexpected, I'll be completely stumped from there or for example the session starts and a player brings up a game mechanic that I forgot abt
Review your class features carefully and they will tell you what stats are needed
A weapon user needs to decide what kind of weapon/armor that will inform whether you need STR or DEX
I will also note that you're learning a new game - it's going to feel like a lot at first but as you keep at it and eventually start playing, things will begin to click and become 2nd nature. And even now, with years of playing and running the game as a DM, I still mess up rules and forget things!
The DM is god. The players can never really go where you dont want them to go
The point of the game is to have fun. As long as you're doing that and everyone at the table is having fun, you're doing D&D right. Even when you forget rules. Even when you forget about a monsters special abilities. Don't worry. You can pause the game as needed to look up stuff, to reset expectations, to enforce appropriate player behavior, etc. Focus on fun.
I mostly just hope I can find a group that can help me if I ever royally screw up during a session
Understood
Is there a difference between leather and scale cause I’m picking equipment but it doesn’t really say a difference
You can also think of it as presenting a problem to your players. Where the trick is to work with your players to create a solution to solve that problem.
I got a bunch of friends who hype up dnd and it sounds like a lot of fun. But they never told me how to actually play 😭
Same thing goes for players - as long as you're having fun and helping others have fun (including the DM) - you're doing D&D right. Most folks are fine with new to D&D players (hey we all were new D&D players at some point!). Again focus on having fun, try to learn how to run your character sheet so you don't always have to ask others for help, but also don't be afraid to ask for help! The point of the game is to have fun.
Fun and figure out the character sheet. 👍👍👍
Problem: god is scared, an angry angel is angry and god has selected 6 random ass adventurers to fight for him
Why is god a mood?
Seems like a solid plot
There is a table that gives the stats for armor, In the equipment section
I was thinking like, there are skeletons wandering around from the crypt and menacing people like your family in the village.
Since you’re using dnd beyond, it should make things easier for you since you can click on different things on your character sheet and a brief explanation will pop up
Yeah I've figured out a thing or two at this point
He's not a mood, he's just spooked by the angry angel he trapped for many millenia
Oh yeah cause I saw I had a amour class of 12
If it’s your first time DMing, you can start with a pre-written adventure made to be played in one sitting.
Ohh okay thank you
Alright thank you
Ohh okay thank you
you probably havent equipped your armour
You have to equip it I kinda thought it was automatic
why is it so hard to find a group open to newcomers to with my availability 😭
What have you tried so far?
Because there are waaaaaay more players than DMs.

this is indeed the channel
Is the Monster Manual any useful besides giving a lot of monster ideas? I was planning to make my own or use ones within campaigns so not sure how useful it'd be.
and I believe I heard the DM book already gives help in making new monsters so...
If you're new I highly recommend sticking with existing statblocks
the Monster Manual provides a bunch of basic ones that can serve a ton of purposes
just trying to save money
Hey Everyone! I am new to DnD and I'm just excited to be here!
A new DM would lack the experience to make a balanced monster.
the basic rules do also include a bunch of free simple statblocks tho, so read through those and see if they'll fit your needs
There are plenty of 3rd party monsters
that's what I was thinking
You can always reskin/reflavour monsters
so not sure if there's a point in getting the "official" one from WotC
I think the PHB and the DM guide are the only things I really need right?
Most of the monsters in the MM are found in the free Basic Rules.
so what's the point of it then? to have it in a nice print version, I suppose?
I said most, not all.
I mean yeah
I'm just not sure if it's worth getting when I plan to use other 3rd party sources for a lot of my content
You know your own budget.
how would u make a balanced monster
That would be something for #dm-discussion or #homebrew, not here.
ok sorry i just saw it here so i thought it would be fine to ask that question here since it was in this tab but i get it
kind of a shame that some campaigns i got interested in require the players to use a paid service like forge
i mean i get it but still a bit of a shame
¯_(ツ)_/¯
If someone requires me to make a character sheet on D&D Beyond, will they normally offer me the shared books feature on there? I see some people here requiring D&D beyond sheets and I do not plan to buy any digital books (I personally use GSheets 2.1 for my own character sheets) and was wondering if I was just "locked" out from joining those groups without paying for the digital books.
I know there's probably not a set-in-stone policy, but I was curious what the general move is.
Some groups will have someone with a Master Tier subscription and enable Content Sharing
and if they don't, then I just can't really join I assume?
well, not that outright
Well you could - you just will only be able to use what's available in the free basic rules and any homebrew
a DM can still manually edit a sheet with their content
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
You can also use the homebrew tools to recreate material you already own from physical books.
hm
Just don't publish it (make it available to the general public). Unpublished homebrew can still be used in your own games/chaarcter sheets with no issue.
Alternatively, you could buy just the pieces you need (like a single subclass) instead of the full book.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
yeah, I'm not doing that lol
I'll just stick to using other stuff
so I can submit, say, a race from a book I own as private homebrew content onto D&D beyond, and the DM will be able to see it on my sheet?
Yes that can work
I'm a DM trying to advertise my campaign and look for players, where do I start in this server?
Read carefully #find-a-game
so I can transfer over stuff from my books onto D&D beyond without having to entirely purchase the books again, basically?
You could yes. It's just a matter of work and not publishing it (making it public)
most stuff yes
sadly invocations and fighting styles and maneuvers aren't re-creatable.
damn
Ah yes. There are some limitations but you could fake it via custom feats
I think I may just have to hope that my DM is fine looking at my sheet on something besides DND beyond
or is sharing books
(damnit, now I feel like when I want to DM, I'd be an ass if I didn't share books... but I don't want to buy tons of digital books and pay a sub for a site I barely use...)
Usually it's the DM who fronts the cost. Talk with your DM first.
I wanna be a DM at some point but I'm not exactly rich
I planned to make my own campaigns or use third party ones and personally I try to make most of my stuff with open-source or free options
That's fine.
I guess I'd just have to find a group that's fine with all that

Materials to get started
Is foundry free to join and use as a player?
Like if someone says they use foundry to host their games
Yes, the client side is free.
Only one person pays for the license and the means to host the server (usually that's the DM).
OH IS THAT HOW IT WORKS
hey im going to play a campaign in 1 week and still trying to build a Kensei Battlemaster Monk Fighter
we're playing with exp and not milestone, anyone has any tips on the level distribution?
The DM splits the XP equally among the PCs.
can you cast find familar then let the familar give you help action on attacks?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/find-familiar
A familiar can't attack, but it can take other actions as normal.
Remember that most familiars have 1 to 3 hp...
Oh, that's awesome! I hope my little laptop can run it lol
That'll depend on the size of the maps and any modules the DM runs.

If as a tortle I wanted to jump down a hill or mountain slope and cast withdraw. Would I get a faster travel speed? And Could another party member use my character as a sled?
There are no rules for that, so up to the DM
I was thinking it could be considered falling but then I'd be at risk of damage (if i hit something) but traveling 500ft in 6 seconds sounds awesome
Withdraw? That's not a spell
The shell defence once per turn you can withdraw into your shell
right
that's not a spell. You don't cast it.
Ohh I meant bonus action my bad sorry still learning
And 'once per turn'? It's just your action to go in, bonus action to come out.
And falling damage isn’t negated by AC so you’d take damage too more than likely
If im taking damage on the way down instead of emerging I was thinking I could use healing word as my bonus action after a set amount of damage
Youd first need to use your bonus action to exit your shell, as thats the only action you can take while inside, and then use healing word next turn
You can't cast healing word from inside?
As the feature says, the only action you can take from inside is to exit it
And lowercase action also includes bonus actions
And you’d take damage at the end when you impacted
That's where my confusion was because I thought bonus actions didn't count as a regular action
Read the ability, at the end it says bonus action is the only action you can make while inside
Bonus Actions are an action, but not an Action
so i completely new to playing dnd and i am so confused where to start and i also dont own any dnd books or anything related and i was wondering if someone wants to do a campaign

"...and the only action you can take is a bonus action to emerge from your shell."
Hence counting that bonus action, and all bonus actions, as actions
(But not Actions)
Thank you for clarifying everyone
so when it comes to homebrew can you create custom magic abilities or is it tied to the class
homebrew is literally when everyone in the group agrees "we don't like the rules, let's change 'em"
there aren't any rules when it comes to homebrew, only things that are more or less fun
and i know that i have to handle it with care in some groups
You shouldnt be homebrewing if you’re new
It’s an advanced thing that needs good game knowledge
I'd second that, though perhaps with different phrasing-
homebrew all you like; it's a valid part of the learning process- just don't subject your group to it on a permanent basis
well i had a few ideas so its like a character with a slight homebrew thing so being possesed by like a fire ghost so its awakend some ghostfire abilities and ghostfire is a hard hitting element but has very low accuracy if that sounds any good
You roll to attack the enemy and fail instead hitting your ally
Instead of possessed maybe make it an item that is possessed. It might work better than a basic possession.
Homebrewing flavor (e.g. descriptions but not mechanics) is a lot easier for folks to accept and use.
Homebrewing new mechanical features (things that impact core game mechanics) is much harder to do in a reasonable way that folks are likely to accept.
Also playing a few games using core mechanics unchanged will help give you a feel for how the game is generally balanced - so when you do decide to homebrew something you can do so with some understanding of how to balance it and make it work well with the core game rules.
hi there, would somebody want to look over my character sheet? just need a 2nd pair of eyes to double-check if I did a mistake here or there. I would share a one-page pdf in direct message
Great question for #character-discussion!
oki doki
then is a question if you think that the ghostfire katana because i want him to be a samurai with fire abilites if it could give him abilities through his connection to the sword
This would be something you'd want to discuss with your group and DM as any custom homebrew magical items would need to be balanced for your DM's game.
or you could reflavor class abilities as the item's power
which is a waaaay better way to do things, especially for a newbie
You can make it yes but run it through with your dm and make sure it fits the game.
true i was just asking if it was a nice concept
go for either a Paladin or Hexblade- the smites and various spells fit well, and Paladin's Oaths line up nicely with various forms of Bushido
I could also see an Eladrin in Summer Season form (fire) with the Fighter class and samurai or eldritch knight subclass.
be it making your sword blaze with unholy fire (devotion) or placing a hex on your foe (vengeance or hexblade), it should be interesting
ah, Eladrin's a great fit! Teleportation's always fun on that sort of theme
question is should i start with a level 1 character or should i increase it
Some groups will start at higher levels but many games will start at level 1
If you're just making a character sheet to learn how or for your own personal fun, I'd suggest starting at level 1
right because i want to find a game i just wanna make my character first
Sure - just be aware that you may need to tweak the character with the DM and other players help and advice to fit whatever D&D game you're joining.
it's good practice to make your character after joining a game- the idea is that you make a character specifically to fit the campaign, rather than slapping a generic one in there
just gotta find any in the server unless anyone has a campain available

Hello I am new to DND
I am at the level of reading the player handbook
We recommend giving the free basic rules (or Players Handbook if you have it) a read (1st chapter has step by step instructions on how to build a character), maybe watch some videos/streams of folks playing D&D, then try and make a character, then go find a group and start playing.
I was hoping to attend a session with some expert player who are playing online

Hi all 🙂
Was just looking for a bit of guidance on first time DM & players.
For a session 0 would it work to have people do the DnD Beyond character creation BEFORE Se0 and then spend the first meet up agreeing how/if people know eachother?
Just felt clunky to do character creation all together :/
It's not uncommon to do character creature between session 0 and 1
That way everyone is going in to making their character with a better grasp of things
the Davs are multiplying
and I second Davyd's message; half of the benefit of session 0 is working out boundaries and whether or not the game's a good fit for the players and vice versa,
and the other half is to let the players get familiar with the premise, so they can make their characters properly
Gotcha.
Party are all good friends so fit wise (socially) should be OK - think most should be comfortable with D&D as it's in their wheelhouse.
So for a Stormwreck isle campaign session 0 could be more of a general you're going to Stormwreck isle for X reason, do people want to know eachother before hand are some people lone wolves etc etc?
People setup characters after session 0, start session 1, intro their characters + a bit of backstory then get rolling?
bingo
Much appreciated!
Last question I promise 😅 How much steer as to the campaign would you give people?
Is it just like a pre fabricated reason to initiate the main 'quest' that's given by me in Se0 that people ret-con into canon by their backstories given after session 0 / at the start of se1?
there are a few ways to go about it, but IMO the best one for most groups is simply to have a very wide-reaching start that ties directly into the meat of the campaign.
Well put.
the classic is that some great evil has arisen, but the idea is that starting in a boring town with nothing going on is... well, boring
The DM should present a problem and invite the player's characters to explore and/or resolve that problem.
if you write a hook that could rope in people from all walks of life, you force yourself to write a more dramatic story, which is usually more interesting
sometimes you tailor the hook such that the player characters are more likely to be a certain kind of way- an evil campaign might begin in an imperial prison, for example, though a character or two might claim to be wrongly accused
truthfully or otherwise
(Again - thanks for the help, much appreciated)
@granite swift Zero adventure spoilers, please
Ah sorry meant to make it more generic, apologies!
Thanks for the help though - going to come up with something broad enough to rope people in, share it and get people to put characters together 🙂
Hi quick question how do I run a prewriten module? in specific curse of strahd death House I'm new at being a dm so don't really know how and where to start preparing.
Generally you read the introduction of the adventure and usually the first few chapters so you know the structure and what's coming up first
Once you've done that, you'll want to pretty much read ahead of your players as best you can
I see alr thanks
should I plan my character all the way through to level 20? Or is it best to at least have an idea, but see what particular campaigns need?
personal preference.
you should plan ahead and make sure that you don't build yourself into a corner,
but my no means is it necessary to plan out each level in advance
You can absolutely just build your character for level 1, and go from there. That’s how the game was designed to be played. Most people at the very least plan out what subclass they will pick, because that can affect what stats you need and how you role play your character

so,
the bot post above is the place to start
how do i dnd in a way that is not excruciating to watch.
right,
What do you mean? Presumably it's not about your players watching, but playing
https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/dnd_turn_ref_2022.pdf print one of these off as well as a help sheet
It depends on multiple factors basically being
A: are your party members being bland and boring
B: are your party members being “weird”
Theres also the dm to consider
Yk like if they can not make the campaign into an absolute tragedy
Take your time to learn the basics and remember that streams like critical role and dimension 20 is done by professional actors. So do things in your own way.
Critical role is the peak of dnd acting from what i hear
Not season 1 episode 1 that was peak typical table
Some of the games in the dndbeyond YouTube channel are quite easy to watch and get an idea
Just at least try to be invested
If you cant act the character just try to be invested and have fun
okay, i have completed it
Completed what exactly?
thing is, im mildly uncomfortable with some of the prospects,
Explain
for example the necessary remarks
You're going to have to be clearer as to what you mean
our dm says its entirely alright to be...perhaps more than friendly with the group because its all in character
though i dont like mixing real life and fantasy together
It's still not clear what you're talking about?
So its alright for there to be romance plots?
Are you talking about roleplaying?
Like 2 pc’s to get together?
right, though the dm in our case often, mixes those plots with our real selves, you know? out of character
That sounds fine and relatively normal but what do you mean by “more than friendly” exactly
No, I do not
i would say borderline flirtacious
Either way it would best to have a session zero to setup boundaries
Yeah
In character romance is not uncommon in D&D, although it does really depend on everyone at the table being comfortable and consenting
Along with setting up lines and veils.
I wouldnt really look at it as a weird thing the dm is basically just saying that pc’s can flirt with eachother and romance
The problem should only arise when it gets forced
thank you, that's what i was looking for really
he's certainly piling on the pressure with the only female companion we have
oops, sorry
If talks of a session zero haven’t been made bring them up yourself.
Compatibility plays a big part in ensuring everyone feels comfortable and has fun at the game table.
alright. i can do that
So basically uh that dm is a problem
i'm gathering his behaviour isn't dnd exclusive
Thats like a massive red flag if a dm tries to force romance plots
kind of relieving, i thought we were being prude, or something
Honestly if i were you id recommend the female player to gtfo
she's considering looking elsewhere too,
she wanted me to check first if it was just him, though
or dnd in general
There is no need to stay and risk the chance of the dm either being just a bit pushy or being one of those weirdos
If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable with a group, it’s perfectly okay to walk away from that table.
As the saying goes no dnd is better than bad dnd.
Dnd is heavily ingrained in nerd culture so it wouldnt be very surprising if some people view themselves as above others
starting to re-consider even starting with this group now, ahaha
Yk since this way they can imagine themselves being the person they are not
good to know it's not entirely..well that.
oh man okay
okay, great, she's left
Ah good
time to deal with the collateral damage, someones going to have a fit..
thanks for everything,
i will let you know if i'm still alive
Greetings! I may be here a lot but what exactly are game settings in dnd?
hello, i dont know :/
yeah same just joined
A setting is place or series of connected places where a series of adventures and stories are set
Usually it's a specific world (often called a plane) although a setting can also be a space between planes
For example, the Forgotten Realms is a setting that focuses mainly on the world of Toril, most often on its continent of Faerun and the Sword Coast region specifically
No, that's not what a setting is, that's genre
Oh my bad
I heard that Chronomancer was part of a setting?
Some other settings include Eberron, a world where magic is common and there's a lot more of what resembles to us as technology
That's a game option, not something tied to a setting
The official campaign setting of Greyhawk takes place on the planet Oerth but it resides in the same Material Plane as Toril. Think of the Material Plane as our universe.
Not to say you can't have setting specific, or strongly linked game options
A setting is a way of saying "all these adventures and stories take place in a connected space and can cross over with each other"
Can new character have multiclass at lvl 1
Not sure what that has to do with settings, but no
You can't have levels in two different classes when you only have 1 level
sorry for unrelated question and tnx for answer
No because you can't split level 1 into two classes. You need to be at least character level 2 to have a class level in two classes.
tnx
Chronomany is a wizard subclass from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. Technically it is DLC, but found most DMs allow most official DLC, especially from xanathar's guide to everything or tasha's cauldron of everything
Hello, I am making my own battle grid at home, so my question is: it is necessary for each square of the grid to be 2,5 cm?
Chronomany is a wizard subclass from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount
No it's not, that's Chronurgy, Chronomancy is something from previous editions
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
yeah
am i reading rn
I want to start my very first campaign w a group of friends. Since I'm dming for the first time I'd lean on WotC Modules. Is there an order for the expansion or campaign we should Play so that we understand the world better and better?
With a very small number of exceptions, there is no continuity between adventures
Playing one is not required, or will even give you a better grasp of the world, to play another
I was making an assumption that they meant time magic in general
Some modules are more complex/difficult, but this is something people suss out themselves. There's no official notation or anything.
Dragon of Icespire Peak is a great starter one as well
Aight. So I'll ask some dms how they started out I think. Thanks for your feedback!
@hushed prairie you were just asking in the wrong channel where the rules were, but didn't you just say you were reading them right now?
It's the beginner one right? Might start there. 🙂
Adventures from any of the starter sets are a good bet, as they're largely intended for new players/DMs. Some do a better job of onboarding than others.
It is, i do recommend being a player before you dm, but if you are diving right in you will figure it out within a few sessions
This is great thank you!
yeah
i was reading this chat #dnd-rules
and was confused so i searched online
If you're aiming to become a DM, I think this resource is great, even if you don't use the adventure they reference: https://howtogm.guide/
I played pen and paper before just a different ruleset and it's been years.. All of my friends want to play dnd but no one wants to dm and I always wanted to give it a try!
Someone asked you if you'd read the basic tules, you said yeah...
Wow this is amazing. Thank you!
the basic rules to the server yes
not the game no
im still on them
i said im reading them
and i was in the channel

Hey everyone, so i just finished one of those premade Campaign's with a few friends of mine, which was also my first time actually playing DnD myself. Now after finishing that, the group has decided to switch to a completely self made Campaign with completely custom characters, and to be honest, i am a bit overwhelmed. I have a few ideas on what characteristics and things id like my character to do, but thats really it. So if someone has some time on their hands, and would be nice enough to help a newbie, they can send me a DM or if its alright just help me in this channel? Thanks in advance!
You'll want to check out #character-discussion for that one 🙂 They can help you with building a character for your new campaign.
It's not in my plans to play at or above level 20 any time soon, but I have seen a few LFP groups talk about play at or above (if I read correctly) level 20. Clearly the published rules stop at level 20. Do people regularly play at these levels? I can only assume they do so with homebrew rules, am I right? Are such campaigns focused on defeating/slaying gods and planar beings of note (lords of Hell, etc). What sort of content does one find above level 20?
Thanks in advance for answers/discussion either here or DMs.
Hi, I'm completely new to D&D and I'm not sure where to start. I've played a lot of computer and ps5 games that have the same format and some of my friends play D&D and have given me a run down, many things to read and helped me wth character creation. Where is a good place to find a group and set up something online?
ah alright thanks! ill just copy paste that message over there then!
Hey is anyone starting a new campaign that I can join. I am very new to D&D and figured the best way to learn is while playing. #looking-for-players #looking-for-community
Have a look in those channels you linked and any you like respond in the thread under the ad
I have not, I will do that now. Thank you
how do I build up to a big bad villain?
the effects of the villain I have currently on the world is corruption of dead entities
That’s a question for #dm-discussion
aight
The conventional wisdom is most groups conclude by level 13 or thereabouts for a few reasons. For one, games implode because of group dynamics or because of scheduling. For another, getting to 20 probably takes a long time, and sometimes a group wants to switch it up. Not everyone has the bandwidth for a single story unfolding over years. Finally (to me, anyway), very few official adventures for 5e go to 20, so knowing how to balance for that level means being in largely uncharted territory. So I wouldn't say it's common, but as for what happens at that level (or beyond), you might be better off asking in #dnd-discussion if you haven't already.
And the spellcaster martial gap grows even further at that level
Which is very much a topic for another channel
So if I want to own physical books, I ALSO have to buy them digitally for D&D Beyond?
Is that... recommended? Do people do that?
Do you have any local game stores? You get just the physical books there or off of Amazon
yeah that was my plan
because I like physically holding a book
but what if I want to play online? I have to buy every book again?
just depends on what you want, i know people who get both physical or digital
I believe there os a bundle online that allows you to get both
if you plan to play online more get digital same if you want to do in person more for physical
I don't really understand why you can't just get both
well, I do understand... more money
money
Recommended? Not really, it's down to what you want/need
Do people do that? Yes, they do
You can: dndstore.wizards.com
so do most people just stick with one or the other?
We don't have data on what "most people" do
Some people buy just physica, some buy just digital, some buy both
I see...
I'm a person that really enjoys physical books so I guess that'll be my route
Is there a specific server that noobs are pointed to when starting? Or they all bout the same?
There's no newbie-specific server so far as I know.
What are all the books that add new content in terms of things like subclasses and playable races?
The races and their sources are all listed here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
A list of subclasses is trickier.
How important are my starting points? Am I able to essentially brick my character? LOL
It is not easy finding a game as a new player . Well one that works in all aspects
For basic function, there are certain things you do need
Ok thanks i guess i need to do some research lol
If you follow the basic rules of character creation you won’t be able to ‘brick’ your character. You could roll really low on your stats but most DMs tend to use point buy or standard array
Cool im just tryin to get kinda prepared before i start lol
Tryin to not look foolish around a bunch of pros
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L&si=D_Hc9LnJl6etKxam some good videos n this play list on character creation and roleplay dos and donts
the Handbooker Helper series is a good one to watch for quick tips and guidance on getting started
a bit of that with reading the Basic Rules is a solid enough basis for anyone to get a handle on the important stuff
hello all, I’m starting a game with some of my irl friends and since theres only three of us I have taken the dm role, ive never really played before and I’m scared I won’t know what to do. I know you have to sort of plan out a story but how do you accurately plan it when the game itself is so random?
I own the starter set so ive been looking into that but I really want to learn how to make my own stories
You can get more info about this in #dm-discussion, but the quick answer is you don't plan out the story beat by beat. "First the party will do X, which will lead to Y, and..." In brief, you create problems for them, and let them figure out how to solve them. In the meantime, you'll have to combine some prepared things (like locations and people they may encounter) and improvisation so the game doesn't stall when they do something unexpected.
Running pre-written material can help you build up the confidence and knowledge to start building your own.
hey i was wondering if anyone could help me with dnd 5e character creation i was trying to change something but i really dont know what im doing tbh. i can screen share and vc lmk
Have you followed the steps in the Basic Rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
i guess i got some more reading to do.
What did you try to make?
how and what to do if I want to run my first campaign?
I'd recommend a pre-written adventure rather than making one from scratch.
Pick an adventure and find a group
Just need a character sheet (paper or digital), dice (real or digital) and a group to play with.
Also useful to know how a charcter sheet works and the core game mechanics.
i want to make someone feel real smart rn ngl
is the tournament of tokens a good idea?
check out the Starter set and Dungeon Master's Guide
you can play with only 2 players?
You can but D&D as a game is designed/balanced around 1 DM and 3-6 players
i was trying to change my skills i think thats what their called, i was allowed to choose like two or three then i had some more that i saw on the character sheet that i didnt choose that i didnt want or more so wanted in other places
starter set is behind a paywall
I'm not familiar with that one, but it looks pretty well-reviewed. Other good free beginner adventures include The Silvyr Tower, The Delian Tomb, The Green Blight, and Peril in Pinebrook.
You can start playing with just the free basic rules - see the pinned messages here in this channel
cool cool
like medicine and religon
They may of come from a background or race or your class
hmmm
What you trying to make
rather explain with a vc and a screen share i feel like its easier to do so if willing that is
Is it dndbeyond character sheet?
ye
You can link it in #character-discussion
do i send a link or a pdf

Except make sure you follow the server rules link policy when you do (make it super clear what it is you're linking to)
i hope i did it right
is there a way to practice dming without real ppl?
Not really
DM'ing is the act of running D&D with players
DM'ing without people is writing a book
I suppose you could narrate a story but that's lacking so much of the actual D&D gameplay experience
LOL actually thats a cool point
makes sense tho
what's a free adventure for a first time dm and players who like both rp and mostly combat?
im new new so i just want to make sure i can pass some basic/essential tests and hone the dynamics later
Any of the starter adventures are good; Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, Dragon of Icespire Peak and it's follow-ups Divine Contention, Storm Kings Wrath, and Sleep Dragons Wake, or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
I'm not sure what mostly combat would look like while also having space for RP, but A Most Potent Brew from Winghorn Press might be good.
is there like a test or smthn smthn so i dont accidentally mess up too hard, or is the consequences for overlooking a rule not permanently consequential
You're overthinking it a bit
It's a game. It's supposed to be fun.
You will make mistakes and it will not matter
No one gets it right 100% of the time, and even if they did, it doesn't change anything. The point is to have a good time telling a story with friends. There are no points for correct rules.
awesome awesome that genuinely helps a lot with brain appriciate it
last question is the pride label a symbol of orientation or just a lil symbol of respect?
Depends on the user.
in this server i mean haha
was thinking of repping it but what if someone ships my guts clone wrong fr
Again, depends on the user
Folks will chose it for whatever reason, hopefully for good reasons. I wouldn't dig too much into it - if someone wants to share why they selected a particular flair they can do so.
ah i think i see what youre getting at, i appriciate the explanation

is there any rule to dm presentation other than trying not to come off as pretentious?
if i were to say play like a metal riff live as im dming and narrating would that be welcome or bewildering to the average player
Lots of folks talk DM shop in #dm-discussion - my number one tip is focus on fun. This is a game and games are supposed to be fun for everyone playing (DM included)
I mean the rules help us have fun (shared expectations, normalized and understandable mechanics) - so don't completely throw them out. But yeah, the point of a game is to have fun.
i just printed my first character sheet, where can i find a group who's friendly to new player's?
i appreciate it again and the extra clarity, i believe i can imagine what would be an obvious limit just wondering if thats a hidden taboo or smthn like that

See the bot post above!
can you consider a cannon from the artillerist class a mount if i can get on top of it and it can move? (I want to use a lance on it)
Unfortuantely you would need to figure out a way to make yourself tiny, as only creatures that are one size larger than you can serve as a mount
Mounted Combat. A willing creature that is at least one size larger than you and that has an appropriate anatomy can serve as a mount, using the following rules.
Technically speaking the artillerist's cannon is not a creature either, its a magical object. But most DMs are not really going to care about that minutia.
If you'd like to play an artificer that rides on a construct, might I recommend the Battle Smith? Their Steel Defender is medium

Just attempted a ChatGPT solo D&D game. Let’s just say ChatGPT isn’t entirely there yet. Definitely need to look for my first actual game with ACTUAL people and not an AI. One minute I was at a tavern, next minute it was telling me not to drink and drive?? I didn’t even mention a car????
And for some reason it restricted me to Rogue Wizard and Monk as my only classes so that’s fun. Never doing that again
looking for Dm for myself and 3 friends, we are new to D&D and are very committed to learn the game. we just need a teacher #750812887697588356

Hey I’m tryna make a human variant class but it’s only showing my grappler as a feat 😦 does anyone know what I’m aloud to use other then that
Does someone have like a basic starter rule guide?
thank you
You'd need to have access to other feats: buy the books they're in, the individual feats, or someone with the content shares access with you.
Grappler is the only feat included with the free Basic Rules.

That isnt where you go to learn
The bot post above has materials to get started
Where do i even get started with playing d&d (i know almost nothing and am incredibly stupid)
See the bot post above. If you have more specific questions, do ask!
Ok
Yeah I saw
All of this is so complex
It just feels like more homework
But yk might as well give it a try
Its a game with rules that requires time and effort to learn but can reward you
Yeah
If your dm is willing they can help thats what im doing rn
yea its def worth it though
They can help you set up characters and learn the game
Who can?
…the DM
Oh my bad
The dungeon master
I've legit never played before lmao
check the bot post above
Im fairly new to Dnd can someone explain the coin math?
Platinum, gold, silver, copper? Like how does it exactly work?
Wdym? like how much each is worth?
Yeah ex: you have 20 gold and something cost 5 silvers.
Yeah
It's done by 10s
So 10 copper is 1 silver. 10 silver is 1 gold. 10 gold is 1 platinum
And then electrum messes up everything by being worth 5 gold silver
Or is it 5 silver
Oh okay!
its 5 silver
Thanks that make it so much easier knowing the 10s
I made a character and now I don’t know what to do 🥲

Whata up people
Ceiling
Anyone here struggling with their characters?
I dont know how to make a good backstory
Backstories can be very dependent on the group, DM and individual taste.
Sometimes a backstory is just a short paragraph, and you fill in details as you play.
Sometimes people write multiple pages of backstory- but this is for themselves, and the DM should get a bullet point summary of all the important parts.
Sometimes you can leave blanks for the DM to fill in, other times the DM would prefer not to have the extra work. Sometimes the DM can work the backstory into the campaign, other times the backstory is only important for the PCs personal drives and won't otherwise affect the game world.
This is quite the nice place y’all got here. Say I’m quite obviously new and trying to learn dnd but I’m a little overwhelmed on where to start. Any suggestions?
I'd suggest talking with your DM (never go too into detail into a backstory beyond vague design before you join a game), on what sort of backstory would work with the game, and try and hit the high notes of what led your PC to the point they are now.
https://youtu.be/p3N3gv1dTr8?si=X8qQSpWBuXrvw1Ws good video on backstories but if your just starting keep it vague so you can alter the details to fit a setting

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
