check your local library of you don't want to buy. my library has copies of players handbook/DM guide
i dont live in the USA or developed countries
this is my outlet
that does pose a challenge then yeah
ye nobody plays it here
what country you in?
i have a small strugle with class artificer, as far as i know there 4 types of artificer, now i didnt diged too much about every type, but like i know u can build new things with this class, lets say, u want to help a rogue or ranger by upgrading theres ranged weapon, am i able to help them with attack role? like when they try to hit, can i add to theirs weapon so they have better chance to hit?
Are you not using the dnd beyond app
and if they do its 30 year olds that may be on fbi watchlists on counts of grand theft and possession of non-recreational drugs bruh
for example, crossbow doesnt have the sniper scoope, can i as artificer add to it, like build it?
im in a unidentified place in the south american continent
or latin america
I want to say there are lot of the rules and stuff you're asking about online too. I THINK DnD Beyond has some basic rules and stuff you can get for free
@summer sky use the dnd beyond app if it is too hard it guides you on how to make a character
i know the struggle believe me
Same
ye
the struggling is struggled bruh
I'm in America but a rural area, didn't have high speed internet until like 2 years ago
we still aint got it
like high speed internet?
like we still getting 100-150 ping
in games and I cant watch yt sometimes
i do need to eventually find a group willin to take a newbie
dang, I know that struggle
but im getting offtrack here
no, I think it's on point. You're highlighting your challeneges so you can get better advice
Turn off your ad blocker increases browser speeds
ty
but how do i know what faction I wanna join
I don't think you really need to know, unless you want your character to be in a faction
and whats with these little circles and stuff besides where it says strength dexterity and allat
Work with your DM on what factions to join - this game is a collaborative game and the DM sets the stage and the players play the actors (characters) in the story and both work together to have fun.
You can absolutely start as a DM, but it can be tricky because DMs are often more knowledgeable about the game—whereas a player just needs to know how their character works, the DM knows how the monster works, spells, magic items, etc. It can be a lot, but it doesn’t have to be. Basically, you don’t have to use all of the rules. Or run a shorter game with limited character options to make it easier on yourself.
I think finding other newbies is a good idea so you all learn together. If you know anyone personally who’s experienced as a ringer of sorts, that’s not a bad idea!
i sadly dont have a dm
that's to put either your attributes or modifier in. up to you
like in the circle I put my attribute, and the big box my modifer. Cause the modifer is what you'll be looking at all the time
and whats proficiency bonus?
and experience points?
levels of characters have like a common proficiency bonus
exp points you get from adventures, your DM would award those
Proficiency bonus is determined by character level - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#ProficiencyBonus
Experience points are a way that DMs can manage when and how characters level up and is based on the problems the characters resolve or the monsters defeated.
way better than my explantion, thank you
DND isn't... one solitary game - it's not like a videogame where everyone is playing the same base experience, like skryim's Imperials versus Stormcloaks. In DND, one DM's table might feature a political intrigue between factions of their own original creation, and another DM's table may just not feature factions in any important light at all.
@young steeple
do i need like stat points
for the shits below? and how much statpoints do I have before I lvl up
ty
specifically, for ability scores
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
you've got three options at base (one of which is unreliable pre-DM)
Point Buy and Standard Array are your reliable ones
Rolled involves rolling 4d6, discarding the lowest number, and recording the leftover total, doing this a total of 6 times. Then you assign each total to an ability of your choice, to get your ability scores.
Then, you derive your Ability Modifier from the respective Ability Score.
for example, if you put a 14 in Strength, you would have a +2 strength modifier, because a score of 14 gives a +2 modifier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
no, you can, at higher levels
so i can decide my hp at lvl 1?
At 1st level, you start with the maximum result for your hit die. For example, a fighter starts with 10 + their Constitution modifier, as their max hp.
No, you can roll when you level up or take the average for your class’s hit die. You don’t get to decide your HP.
Each level after your first-ever, you can choose to roll or take the average rounded up, to increase your max HP.
what average for monk?
For example, in a game I'm playing, I've gotten to 4th level fighter, and they have a +3 constitution modifier.
They started with 13 maximum hit points (10+3), and for the 3 levels thereafter have gained 9 hit points each level (the average of a d10 is 5.5 - rounded up for class HP rules, is 6, plus con mod for 3, is 9 per level)
A d8 has an average of 5.
No, that isn’t possible.
no
so what do I do
I linked step-by-step characters earlier
how do I decide it
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
ye but I got so many questions
we don't mind questions, but did you read through the article?
Also, it's a matter of... if you come to a table with a score of 100
they're just not going to use that, they'll ask you to make sensible stats instead, by the rules
read that stuff above my dude, more of will make sense.
The blue text highlights are links to the relevant thing
read all the the stuff, and do some research, then can ask better questions. that's what helped me
im halfway
There's only so much we can do to help if most of it is just posting the links :P
aight ty
"the stuff" being the links put above
Instead of explaining what the basic rules are, it's easier for you to read that and then we explain the tidbits about them
so what im learning the proficency bonus is what matters?
for some things
That's for when you're making certain saving throws (depending on your class's proficiencies), some ability checks that use certain skills, or making an attack with a weapon you're proficient in
Proficiency bonus is an important part of a character yes.
The ability stats are also important (see here #dnd-newcomers message)
Follow the first chapter in https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules as it's a step by step guide for building a character.
And yes it may feel overwhelming but here's the thing - take it gradually, don't feel like you have to memorize it, and as you have specific questions you can ask here or in an appropriate channel.
i didnt understand this paragraph really "enough"
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. To determine an ability modifier without consulting the table, subtract 10 from the ability score and then divide the result by 2 (round down). Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Let's say you put a 15 on your strength.
15 on the table is a +2 modifier.
Ergo, a +2 Strength modifier.
So whenever you need to make a strength check, saving throw, or try to attack with a fist or a club, you have that +2 for the relevant part of adding to the roll.
so much reading
"When a character makes an attack roll, the two most common modifiers to the roll are an ability modifier and the character's proficiency bonus."
"The ability modifier used for a melee weapon attack is Strength, and the ability modifier used for a ranged weapon attack is Dexterity. Weapons that have the finesse or thrown property break this rule."
"You add your proficiency bonus to your attack roll when you attack using a weapon with which you have proficiency"
So if you are of any level from 1st to 4th, and make an attack with a longsword, and you are proficient with a longsword
You add your Strength modifier and your Proficiency Bonus to the Attack roll.
If you hit (after comparing the attack roll total to the target's Armor Class (AC)), you deal damage, which is 1d8 for a longsword, or 1d10 if you used two hands, plus your Strength modifier.
Initially, yeah
You eventually get this feel for where to look the rules up, and some things just become second nature
the more important part is knowing rules exist and to look for them, than memorizing them all like an encyclopedia.
One is immensely easier to work with and lets you learn more organically than a school would have you believe
okay so my stats are 17 strength 12 constituion 14 intelligence 10 dexterity 9 charisma 13 wisdom with my race stats
and now the ability thing is?
why does it cost??
"ability thing"?
What do you mean "why does it cost"?
ability modifiers
The rules will tell you how to calculate your abilitiy modifier for each stat
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
The "costs" are presumably a variant, colloquially called Point Buy. You've already got your stats, I assume from the standard "15 14 13 12 10 8" list.
Go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
You can ignore the table where each score costs certain points, that's just a different (somewhat more complex) method.
yeah I got my stats from 15 14 13 12 10 8
yep, just go to the Scores and Modifiers table
where do i find that?
found it
anyway- your scores, after organizing them into the usual order (Str Dex Con Int Wis Cha), is 17, 10, 12, 14, 13, 9
would be +3 strength, +0 dexterity, +1 constitution, +2 intelligence, +1 wisdom, -1 charisma.
so those are your respective ability modifiers. So, whenever a roll depends on it, you modify it by that number depending on the nature of the roll. For example, investigation usually falls under intelligence, so a base of +2.
Yes, there's a fair bit of reading up front, but once you start playing it'll all start to flow.
Step by step, it says to go
Race, Class, Ability Scores, Background, Equipment.
aight ty
so in the background I just go all out right?
(Once you get familiar enough with everything, that all becomes optional order, except equipment always comes after both background and class, due to being influenced by both)
with Background, you choose a relevant background.
What was the character idea you were making?
Anyone else terrified of applying for games as a newbie?
If you don't apply then you won't have a chance to play.
It can be a bit daunting if you're a new player, yes. Just remember, we were all new players at one time.
Finding a group to play with is like any other social relationship like dating. You have to take the plunge if you want to be involved.
I was just thinking about it being a quiet adventurer that was born in the slums and he just took it up to himself to take his family out of the slums, move foward with life and do the work needed to get what he needed when he wanted it how he wanted it. Stubborn yet willing to admit defeat upon being showed otherwise (in an argument, not in a fight)
idk anything about cities or the overall lore
Background is very much an early life / how did I get here
that sounds quite like the Urchin background
oh so I dont need to define him?
again, DND isn't a singular game
there's plenty of Settings, there's plenty of different DMs with different games
whats in the features and traits part?
Your racial and class features.
ohhhhhhhhh okay
I been skittish myself, seem to always find something to talk myself out of joining a group. that or the times never seem to line up
so here I decide like what dragon color thingy majig I am?
like i remember seen that dragonborn had the option to like have different breath weapons and from these weapons they chose smth
as a Dragonborn, you decide your draconic ancestry, which determines a damage resistance and your breath weapon trait
thingy majigs are on page 252 of the player's handbook
exactlyyyyy thank you bruh
the draconic ancestry, where do i put that?
The section about the Dragonborn race covers that, unless you're talking about a Draconic Sorcerer, in which case you want to look at the Sorcerer section of the Classes chapter
they have a page for that?
sorry, I was being an ass
I love that word, and use it too ha
oh its okay lmao
i also partake in tomfoolery sometimes
oh hell yeah
aint nthn tooooooo crazy
or my definition of crazy atleast
just a lil bit of tomfoolery
You'd have determined that when you took dragonborn in the first place anyway
for example, a gold dragonborn can resist Fire damage
so much in learning DnD, can seem like it's all just tomfoolery when diving in
it's a bit wide when you begin, then it slims down as you find your niche
for example, I know rogues and warlocks very well, but haven't ever played a cleric or paladin
real learning
I've favored towards warlocks and paladin's myself so far
ye I took blue dragonborn
for the lightning thing
Warlocks have a TON of story potential, especially if your DM is willing to work with you
then you resist lightning, and if I recall correctly, do a lightning-line for your breath weapon
yes, that's one of the things that drew me to them. What hangs me up is for role playing, the great old one I dig as a patron, but I like the abilities of the fiend
I was drawn to the Archfey, mostly because I'm a huge Dresden Files fan 🙂
I need to read more about archfey!
hold up I was told that monk was a class, but i see that the classes are rogue, fighter, cleric and wizard
are those like subclasses?
Monk is a class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/monk
I had an idea for a character that reads a ton of books, very smart, and then one day found some old book that turned out to be a book of cthulu. he would decipher it and get powers (great old one). But the catch was that he had really low intelligence, so it didn't line up with the character (low intelligence probably not going to figure out how to decipher the book).
you could of made him had parents that knew old-speak language ctulhu thingy since babies learn from watching other people and if his or her parents know it then it should be able to transfer to him from watching them talk and stuff
and you could of made him read fiction books so he didnt really learn anything
but thats just me
For every class, at some point you pick a subclass(which will often have a unique name like Path, Order, Domain, etc depending on the class). The Basic Rules lists one subclass choice for each class(the one that Wizards made publicly available), the Players Handbook and other books have more choices.
oh snaps, both some ideas! Well since i haven't made him yet, I may just have to steal that
ye
but it was just a suggestion
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
These are the classes. (blood hunter is partnered content, homebrew by someone affluent - don't assume DMs will allow that)
I like it though. reads a lot of books, and then just finds one one day they can read only cause parents knew it.
Each of these classes have subclasses, which is basically an extra list of features, you choose which one you take.
I mean from my extensive research and baby study from being one myself like what 6-7 years of me life i think I know why I know the languages I know
like I read a lot of books and I'm not smart at all, so I could roleplay accurately as well ha
its crazy being able to speak 4 languages bruh
bro doing method acting
TIL what method acting is (just googled it)
lots of potential for acting too playing DnD!
if you got the role you could play it tbh
i just learned what method acting was because I saw a morbius documentary lmao
morbius memes have NOT been used since 2022
speaking of Morbius ...I got the curse of stahd module to try and DM with my kids. talk about a lot to take in
Can I ask you fine folks to take the acting/not-D&D discussion to #non-dnd-topics please? Thanks!
I was just trying to bring it back to topic!
Ah okay - thanks!
thats anotha thingy majig i dont know
what curse of strahd?
It's a famous (infamous) D&D adventure module
DnD has all kinds of adventure books. Curse of Stahd is a popluar one. Like gothic vampire stuff
A prewritten campaign/setting that the DM can run for a group.
which being a new DM, I have read best to start with prewritten campaign
and it is considered a campaign?
In the sense that it will take multiple (and possibly many) sessions to run and get through, I think it could fit the definition of campaign.
it's pretty overwhelming for me to take in and think about attempting to run, I'll say that
I love it though, love the setting
If folks need to get into the nitty-gritty and possibly spoilery details, we have #1029833015423143957 and a specific channel for that adventure.
I started watching this and it's been pretty good so far
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcVoov2ilOfKNJevZ3mGkW6s7X2yxFtRE
oh that's a good point about spoilers, thanks for reminder
My tip would be make sure there's a cleric or paladin in the party (that's not very spoilery as the themes of the adventure are pretty upfront about what you're going to deal with)
@summer sky that link above I also learned a bit about playing. a member of the cast (Melanie) is like super brand new and it's fun to watch her learn how to play as she goes.
"bring the divine wrath of god to the darkness" isn't very spoilery yeah
my kids both want to be wizards. Will probably need to give them a cleric hireling or something then
Hello, i am new to dnd but i have played baldur’s gate 3, and have a basic understanding of how the game works
Hello there brother
oh and for hirelings/NPCs, do DMs run them, or do the players?
Two wizards in CoS... that's going to be an interesting party!
(I too play with my kids - D&D is such a fun game!)
I stg man
Custom death rules are my solution to all CoS lethality problems
Lets you kill them without guilt
Plus Dark Gifts are fun
The sidekick rules introduced in Stormwreck Isles I think - that is something the players can run/manage and the sidekicks level up at certain points as well.
that's awesome! mine are loving it. we're all learning together too about the game
The game is designed for 1 DM and 3-6 players generally
But I have played in groups as low as 2 players 1 DM and I've run a game with 1 DM and 12 players.
High group counts are not recommended for new DMs though
dang 12 players? that's got to be nuts for the DM
Hi there! Check out the useful resources pinned here in the channel.
Yeah I was the DM
It was a blast but A Lot Of Work
(mostly teenagers and the crazy creativity and chaos was a lot)
Yes a bit. Not something you can't manage and work with though. Definitely easier than more than 6 players.
One thing I've found hard to trying intepreting RAW to playing. Thankfully the handbook as a lot of examples, but for stuff it doesn't it can be confusing.
For example, long rests. I learned you have so many hit die for long rest (I think?). And you can expend hit die on short rest. But does hit die recharge fully on long rest?
that's just one thing that came to mind. I'm constantly googling to find answers to other stuff and can go down a lot of rabbit holes
that is awesome, hats off to you for that
like in general? or a particular aspect of them?
Many folks play with long rests restoring all expended hit dice but the rules actually state:
At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character's total number of them (minimum of one die). For example, if a character has eight Hit Dice, he or she can regain four spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest.
so I have to do 2 long rests to get the eight hit dice back?
I believe wizards get slots back with long rests. But you can do what's called arance recovery to get some back too. I don't know the rules though for that
So assuming you expended all 8 hit dice, your first long rest would restore 4.
Assuming you didn't expend more hit dice, your second long rest would restore the next 4 hit dice.
It can kind of represent long term stamina of adventuring lifestyle
ahh, that answers it for me, FINALLY ha. thank you
hit die I still get confused about but getting better
All casting classes get all their spell slots back after a long rest.
Warlocks get them back on a short rest (but also have less spell slots and cast at their highest spell slots available)
Wizards have a feature called arcane recovery which can allow them to regain some spell slots on a short rest (but can only use the feature once per long rest)
Sorcerers can use sorcery points to regain spell slots (or consume spell slots to create sorcerey points to use for meta magic features).
If your spell slots are from the "Spellcasting" class feature(basically everybody BUT Warlocks), you get them all back on a Long Rest. Some classes with Spellcasting have features that allow them to regain some of their spell slots before their next Long Rest. If your spell slots are from the "Pact Magic" class feature(aka Warlocks), they recharge on a Short Rest. You only get a few, but they recharge multiple times a day and their level increases automatically as you level up.
Just wait until the new 2024 Core Rulebooks come out, it looks like they're changing it so you get ALL your Hit Dice back on a Long Rest. 🙂
It does simplify things and restoring all hit dice on long rest seems to be something many groups use already
once i finally learn enough where I feel like I'm cool, the new books will come out haha
It also makes it easier for them to create abilities that use Hit Dice as a resource, which I'm a fan of.
We're all going to be learning the new rules at the same time 🙂 Thankfully the core of 5E is still going to be there, the new books aren't a new edition but rather a refinement of the current one.
oh well that's win then for noobs like me I suppose.
I know it's been discussed trillions of times. Baldur's Gate 3 has been pivtoal in helping me learn to play. I actually think it's a bonus to that there are rules that differ from the core rules, as it can force you to get into the books and also be in intro to what homebrew rules are
hey guys im looking to get into online dnd
but im not sure what tabletop i should use or if there are any specific almost widely used one
any reccs?
Are you going to be a DM?
Then you don't worry about which virtual tabletop to use.
The DM decides which one to use.
Most VTTs use a web browser.
oh okay thanks !!
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
looking for those now
i just wanted to start downloading things if i had to so i could have them ready
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
okay great !
hey so i was wondering if someone could explain damage and combat to me. I understand everything else but damage and combat kinda confuses me
What don't you understand?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat
basically like how do u know how many health points to take away from an enemy and how do u figure out like d6 and d8 damage
Let's say you're using a longsword to attack an enemy.
You would do an attack roll: d20 + Proficiency Bonus (if you're proficient with longswords) + Str modifier.
If you hit then you would roll a d8 + Str modifier.
The weapons chart lists all of the weapons and how much damage they do.
Melee weapons use Str modifier.
Ranged weapons use Dex modifier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
wait how do u know what weapons youre proficient with?
Depends on your class.
Your class says which weapons (usually Simple and/or Martial weapons).
ok and how do you know how many hit points to take away
Some playable races are proficient with weapons. For example, high elves are proficient with longswords, shortswords, shortbows, and longbows.
I already told you. You roll the damage of the weapon plus the appropriate modifier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
By rolling dice
The DM controls the monsters/NPCs so the DM will deduct the hit points from the monsters if they're injured.
so then the total number of damage of a weapon + modifiers is how many hit points to take away
Basically yes. Some class features or magic items can add to that.
This chapter is where the rules for that are
Here's Handbooker Helper tutorial videos on melee and ranged weapons
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VISVxpCrVQg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcH7xoDmIu0
ok thank you
Could someone help out on making a character with one of my friends?
We are both just starting we just haven't gotten it all down yet
Im the freind in question

The bot post above has some helpful info.
Good to dnd beyond is option also watching critical role and another dnd YouTuber which I don't remember
Handbooker helper series is a good way to learn how to build a character if you’re a visual learner.
No that's not necessarily the help we're looking for, We're really just checking if we've got stuff correct and if we need to add anything
Ah
If you already made a character and just need feedback, then feel free to to share your character in #character-discussion or #optimization
Depending on the feedback you want.
Well I can't send screenshots of my sheet in those channels so thats kind of an issue
Did you make them on dnd beyond?
No
is it better to make a character on dnd beyond or on pen and paper?
They are merely different ways of keeping track of your character
Notably dnd beyond requires digital purchase of any content to use the app for chracter building/tracking
I'm pretty new and I'm playing a monk but I don't know what kind of back story I should have I would like some help making one
Also what's the difference between a gm and dm?
DM and GM are interchangeable, there is no practical difference. Might be some historical differences in how the term evolved. For your purposes they are the same
Thank you
A character’s backstory need not be complex, it only exists to serve your character going forward into the game you’re about to play. So:
Where is your character from?
What would goals would they like to achieve? What motivates them?
What is the personality? How do they treat others
What are their flaws?
Most inportantly….why join others on an adventure
Okay so I'm playing a monk I have a general concept but I have no idea how to go in depth nor do I know where I would be from*
Keep in mind:
You dont play your backstory, so dont write a book
It be an outline, it doesnt need to be a narrative. Its only for you and the DM
The setting of the campaign is determined by your DM, dont use specific times or locations or names even, keep it flezivle
it doesnt need to be in depth
It doesnt need to be class specific
Okay
A class can be a starting point or throughline for your character but doesnt have to be. It is, afterall, just a collection if game mechanics
Think about these things and them check out #character-discussion for further feedback
Okay thank you for your help and time.
What all do I need to get into dnd never have done it just been curious and wanan try it out now and anything I should know

See above for material to learn
@forest viper #find-a-game is a good place to find players
What do you need help with?
Spamming multiple channels and pinging random people is really not appropriate behavior
While camping outside at night, should I start a campfire before going to sleep ? Like let it burn throughout the night ? In-game of course
Like does the fire attract monsters or keep them away
Hello everyone. I am new to dnd and I had took a liking to the wizard class. However I am not sure the exact rules aboht the spellbooks. Can I learn anything of the spellbook that I want without limit while being level 1?(i use the apps so i can prepared 4 spells but I can learn all spells though I wont be able to use them but they are still on my spellbook.)
And I was wondering if there are any races or characters or both mixing combination that allows me to grant various options, actions, or spells choices. (Example would be such as high elf wizard. It gives me an extra cantrip, allow me to prepare 4 spells, has various options of spells I can prepare off and let me learn all of them.)
Also whats so special about the spell books that other characters doesnt have it? Am I allowed to learn whatever i wish from the app when modifying my spells?
Why is it that i must learn jt before I prepare the spell. Can i learn unlimited? I dont understand how the wizard spell books works and its function and limits.
Lvl 1 you know 6 spells in your book and can prepare a certain amount a day from your known ones
When you lvl up you can add 2 spells to your book
So it means I can only learn up to 6 spells to my book
And those 6 spells i prepare 4?so if I wanted to change my prepare spells, i take my time to change them withing the game?
The reason dndbeyond gives you access to all the spells as a wizard is that you can copy spells to your book but this costs money and time to do
You have to find spell scrolls or another wizards book to do this
And you learn new spells every time you level up as a wizard
Oh i didnt know that. Thank you, just know I had my first game and I had all spellbooks learn. Well most of it or the things I want
Whats the amount of spell I learn as I level up? I know the amount of choices but it seems there is a limit amount of spells I can learn without amy external help
Yeah it’s just the way dndbeyond is set up to enable wizards to learn spells outside of lvl ups
2 spells.
So once I created my character with spells I want to learn, i cant unlearn them and learn other things am i right?
Why should you want to unlearn them?
You should be able to remove spells for your spell book if you messed up
I thing I rememeber in the handbook about a certain amount of time after taking 8 hour long rest to prepare other spells or change the prepare other spells. But I cant remember how long it takes to learn them.
Learning and preparing are different things.
When you gain a new level you learn 2 new spells. You also learn new spells when you find wizard spell scrolls or spellbooks and scribe the new spells into your own spellbook.
I was wondering if unlearning would give me the option of learning other spells I was interested. Though i guess that counts as ilegal and cant do that outside and inside of the game. Except that it can be done that outside of the game?
The wizard usually has a spell book which contains 100 pages.
No
Wizards only know spells in their own spellbooks. They can prepare a certain number of spells based on their class level.
Oh thank you. Now more or less I know what to and the rules or learning spells
Remember that preparing is what is your PC's head after a long rest.
You got a source for this?
I think that's an older edition thing.
Wait as far as I understand. A wizard at level 1 can learn up to 6 spells. And those 6 spells, 4 can be prepared.
If I want to learn more, I must go to other wizards or find scrolls. When I level up, i can learn 2 more spells of my choice am i right?
Once I created my character, i cant change the spells I learn because that is illegal or in that part I am wrong?
Once you create your character those are the spells you have in your spellbook. There's no changing them.
Oh ok now that make sense of learning and etc
That was wrong, sorry. As the old man already mentioned it was from an older version.
A level 1 wizard starts with 6 spells in their spellbook. Each time they gain a wizard level, they add 2 spells of their choice, for free, into their book.
They can also scribe in spells they find on their journey, from other wizard's tomes or from spell scrolls of spells on the wizard spell list.
A wizard prepares their spells each day, choosing from the spells in their book. They prepare an amount equal to their wizard level + their intelligence modifier. That list of prepared spells are what they can cast on that day, as they've memorized it and have the motions and pitches practiced.
Didn’t we all just say that to them 🤨
Once a prepared spell is used, do i need to prepare them again?
If next day passes and I dont change anything, does it still need to be prepared?
You can, but don't have to, change your list of prepared spells
so you can just keep rocking the same list until you decide to prepare a new list
Oh ok, so once prepared I dont need to prepare them anymore, until i want different ones
yeah, it's a "which list of spells can I spend my slots on" deal, and not a "preparing each individual cast" one
Can someone host a campaign
If you have spells X Y and Z, you can do any permutation of those spells in the day - the only criteria is being able to pay the spell slot cost, and maybe any costly/consumed Material components
I’m bored
plenty of people are hosting games, you can use #find-a-game for instructions on how to use the channel/s
Ok thanks

games that run on going
Thank you very much, it was confusing until you cleared this up
No wonder I felt the wizard class was powerfull, cause i noticed i had multiple abilities
you have one shots which are one and done games then you have campaigns that are games or story over a longer period
In short, the classic DND game. Imagine lord of the rings, but people are manually computing and acting all the events in the moment, so it'd take them a bunch of sessions to get from the shire to mount doom.
Oh the dnd adventures league
And then campaign
yes but no like one shots are one adventures conprising of a short sesh often home brew then campaigns are ones like strad or stormwreck isle that there story plays out over multiple sesh
I am wondering for now and this part is just research of mine. But are there ang character thay are similar as wizard? Like ability options wise that could be used depending on the situations.
I already did it and it’s not working
More or less the other arcane casters like sorcerer and bard e.g.
sorcerers, warlocks, celrics, arcane tricksters theirs loads
Hmm thank you.
Do any of you have campaigns I can join
basicaly anyone who is a spell caster can be wizard like
The link isn’t working
Yes, I have a campaign. No, you can't join.
Why
I don't know you.
i am trying to find an in game one in my city
Have you looked in local game stores?
but isn't that the point to socialise and get to know people otherwise if you are just playing private games with friends then why are you here exactly?
I only play IRL most people just hang out here to chat and swap dnd help
yes and most don't play on weekends
Because I'm here to chat with others about D&D. This server doesn't host games.
40+ years.
8 years 5e
fair enough ... but please be respectful like you came across a bit rude could have just said no sorry i am full up
The other person was expecting to join a game like a video game lobby. D&D isn't a video game.
Are there no video games for it? As far as I had seen, it is very popular
i know people seem on the baulders gate bandwagon and think oh dnd irl is baulders gate lol
i've been playing for over 12mnths now
Oh? Thats how baulder gate is? Is it recommended to get it?
yeah but a video game is nothing like ttrpg that be like saying i play it because i am so into wow lol
i hate people comparing dnd to baulder right now
I am interested of dnd or rpg games but i didnt know which one is the best to play currently
As a forever DM who spends a lot of my limited free time preparing I get irked when people just think they can join a game right now because it shows how little they either know or care about the work DMs put into their games.
This is the channel for basic help
Haha sorry, i was asking for help until i saw that baulder gate 3 was mentioned
I know what you mean.. Which is why people are all atm up in people's grills going oh I love baulders gate so much that I want to play irl.. OK so have you read the rules and know how?... Um no I just like bg and want to play lol that is everyone right now
It pisses me off so I feel your pain as a DM and I want to learn how to DM but everyone just wants to play TTRPG bg really and I am like God I don't think I want to DM if people can't stop talking about bg
Can you tell a story and understand the basic rules? Then you can DM
I came here after reading "1 HP club"
Yeah I mean I can but don't ask me what everyone's skills are etc because I would know off by heart lol that and I only ever been a player am unsure how to do enemy stat blocks
But I suppose start kits and guides do those 4 up n e way
Had my first game today just doing Adventurer's League. Now the DM was great, but the real MVP was the 12 year old girl playing with three gruff (and one not so gruff) blokes in their 30s, who managed to almost single-handedly rescue a group of buried NPCs... Then cut out the heart of a monster to eat it.
There are plenty of stat blocks ready to go, and some of the best 'homebrew monsters' is just kitbashing a trait onto something that didn't have it before
hello i am a newcomer to dnd and i wanted to join a campaign but afraid that i might be a burden due to my lack of experience are there any campaigns that are more newbie oriented
Just find a game that you can play and discuss this with the dm. Some will accept but of not you can watch some already made games to get a better look of what it looks like.
also whats "one shot" is it just doing it in one session?
ah good
Hi so me and my friends are all playing for our first time (our campaign is dragons of storm wrecker isle) and I wanted to know if yall have any dm tips I should know before we start tomorrow
ee there aint many campaigns that look noob friendly
Yea it looks all confusing but I want to learn I started on haulers gate had so much fun and now I want more so now I moved over to D&d
my school time doesnt help
We’re playing during school we all have a 2 hour long study hall together😭
its dnd beyound a good choice for a beginner ?
Read the campaign book 2-3 times so you have the story memorized. Be careful considering the fights as long as your players are still level 1, maybe even use the average damage instead of the damage rolls. And: you and your players don't play against each other but should've fun together. Your job as a dm is to tell an exciting story.... 😄
Okkkk thank youu
the character sheet is really nice for beginners imo. though of course there might be some downsides. you cant easily add stuff you havent bought on DDB, and since the sheet does all of the math for you, its possible to not fully understand how your numbers come to be
Why are there two numbers given for range of thrown/ranged weapons ?
Normal and long range anything in the second number is at disadvantage
For example, handaxe is 20,60
So between 20 to 60 is at disadvantage or distance greater than 60 is at disadvantage?
Between 20 and 60
👍 thank you
Hi im new here just wondering how can I look for campaigns looking for players?
Read all the instructions. Good luck!
Hey guys so I was looking at those find a game things and I keep seeing things come up like roll20, vtt, and 5E??
What do these mean?
Rol20 is a Virtual Tabletop and game finding service and marketplace: https://roll20.net/
VTT = Virtual Tabletop
5E = 5th edition of D&D (the current edition)
Also any games that I’ve seen that peak my interest are all at like 1-5am in my time so is there like a time zone group thing? I feel it might help but I’m not sure how it would work lol
Ohhhhh tysm!
You might try looking at #looking-for-community - these are community D&D servers that may have D&D games that run at better times for you or even Play By Post (PBP) games that are just text based.
Oooo that would be good! Ty!
All of the ones that I see are all 18+ ughhhh 😭😭😭
Honestly thinking of making my own but I have no previous experience so ik it wouldn’t be too good but I really wanna play and everything is 18+ and I checked the server rules and this whole server is 13+ so I am allowed to be here (I’m definitely above 13 lol)
Yo can anyone tell me how to play dnd

Because of certain topics and descriptions that can happen in a D&D game, many folks are a bit hesitant to take on minors as they don't want to be stuck in a serious mess if anything bad happens.
There's also a bit of comfort playing with folks of a similar age range and social context expectations.
Hello! What's the best set up for a dm screen Without using any money? I only have the essential kit
Maybe folks in #dnd-arts-and-crafts can help? This channel is for new to D&D folks get help with core game rules and mechanics.
Totally fair but It still kinda sucks having no games available cause I’m new to this and I really wanna play 😭
Okay thank you
Yeah I hear you. Your idea of putting together something yourself is a good one. I used to play TTRPG games with my highschool friends. Maybe rotate DMs and run one-shots (single session games) so everyone gets a chance to play as a player and run a game as a DM.
Table top role playing game
I second that. I have no idea how to play
Me either pretty much

I have some general questions if someone can help me out
Shoot
I just need a good app or website so I can create some maps. Does anyone know of any?
The pinned messages in #dnd-maps has links to various tools and resources for map making
That is free
Yeah there are some listed there that are free
Thank you. Some of these channels are not on my viewing.

I still don’t see what I’m looking for
Start with giving the free basic rules a skim, check out videos of folks playing D&D to see how those game mechanics work (recognizing that many D&D streams are entertainment first rather than teaching D&D), try your hand at making a character (refer to the first 4 chapters of the free basic rules), then when you feel ready to try playing, go find a group to play with. See #find-a-game for helpful info and instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
Check #dnd-maps message
Review the various tools and see what works best for you and your map-making needs.
I’m sure that nobody wants to play with a noob, so I’m not sure how to start playing
We were all new at some point
Heh. All of use were new at one point. Most groups are actually fine taking on new to D&D players as long as they show a willingness to learn (like reading the basic rules) and vibe well with the group.
I’m creating a character, do I choose simple or custom
On DnDBeyond?
Yes
I'd suggest using the "Standard" and toggle the Beginner? Show Help Text (https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder)
There are often people advertising that they're welcoming or even specifically looking for new players
What are sources
The different D&D books you have access to. Different books provide optional rules or different character options.
For now I would just keep it to core D&D - later you can learn about the different books and what they bring to the game.
Is the default one home brew content
No. Homebrew is community-made (not official) material. Keep that off for now.
What about magic : the gathering
Again just use the core D&D material for now
So do I disable everything
There are D&D books based on Magic the Gathering material that provide additional optional rules and character options - but for now, stay with core D&D.
Yep
Alright
You can toggle the things on later if/when it makes sense or if your campaign uses those optional books.
I been playing too much Skyirm and I said “How do I become a khajit?” 🤣
hi
Is being a warlock okay with being a dragonborn
Can I join someone’s campaign
I have six days left and then I can use lokking for dm
If you're looking for a group we recommend reaching out to those who have posted in #looking-for-players
Hello ppl
How do I become a khajit
Im new and i just got myself the stormwreck Isle starter set
Tabaxi race is the dnd equivalent of khajiit
Is it free
No 1.99 if you buy through the website marketplace
I’ve read that paladins should traditionally be given their highest rolls to their charisma and wisdom abilities.
Is it acceptable to have a paladin with bad charisma? I feel it suits the character I’m after.
Actually… i think yea 😂
Paladins use charisma for their spell casting and abilities
No just the ones the class says they get
Do they only get healing spells or offensive spells also
Quick help, any idea how I can start posting on #looking-for-players ?
I just started 😭 I know nothing
read the instructions in #find-a-game (carefully)
What spells can paladins use, only healing?
Thengs! 🌻
Do you have dndbeyond app?
You can search the spell lists by class
You won't be able to read all the spell descriptions if you haven't purchased them or the books they're in, but here's the paladin spell list: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells?filter-class=4&filter-search=&filter-verbal=&filter-somatic=&filter-material=&filter-concentration=&filter-ritual=&filter-sub-class=&filter-partnered-content=f
It's a mix of damage, healing, and buffs/debuffs.
i have a question i want my warlock to use a big "knife" but but im not sure if it shoud have the dagger stats or uf i sould use the stats of a short sword for what will essencially be a "big as* knife"?
Warlock doesn’t get short sword at lvl 1 unless you’ve gone hexblade
Shortswords are martial weapons, which warlocks don't get proficiency in from their standard features. Thus, you'd be better at attacking with a dagger (since you could add you proficiency bonus to your attack roll), but it'd be less damage.
For these kinds of questions, we do have #character-discussion.
ok thx
So if I don't have proficiency with a particular weapon, I can still use it but I won't add that +2 bonus when rolling for whether my attack hit or not ?
Exactly.
What are fighter skills?
In what context?
It's against the rules to solicit outside of the LFG channels. If you're going to post in #looking-for-players, read #find-a-game.
What happens if I'm wearing armour I don't have proficiency for ?
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
Skills: Choose two skills from Acrobatics, Animal Handling, Athletics, History, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, and Survival
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/fighter#ClassFeatures
The description of each skill is linked there.
What is GP
Gold pieces.
How much gold pieces does a soldier have
Ten gold.
So what is the lifestyle of a soldier?
That's a question for your DM. If you don't have one yet, you're making a character for practice, so your choices are not set in stone. DMs will usually vet your character sheet to make sure it's good to play.
The god your PC follows. Optional.
How do I get information on these gods
Ask your DM because the setting might be something they've made up themselves.
Okay
Figuring out how race, class, and background affect your choices (skills, features, etc.) and the associated numbers are the key bits. If you know those, you know how to make a character mechanically, so you can make one that fits whatever setting/game you're playing in.
The other stuff is what we call flavor: narrative/descriptive stuff that has no bearing on the numbers/how things work.
Do I have to have an image? For my character
That depends on the game you're in. Some will use a visual to show positioning, so a character portrait might be called for. Some just use pure imagination.
But I can’t draw
You can design a character using a site like Reroll or HeroForge. Then take a screenshot.
What’s a gaming set?
This item encompasses a wide range of game pieces, including dice and decks of cards (for games such as Three-Dragon Ante). A few common examples appear on the Tools table, but other kinds of gaming sets exist.
It might be a better option for you to Google your question first before asking it here. Folks are happy to clarify things that are confusing, but some of this can be found with a quick search!
Speaking of a quick search, there are a ton of images that could be used for a D&D character.
hello! I'm new here

I think I’m ready to start playing, I e msde my character
Nice! What did you make?
If you’re asking who to play with, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
I just wannna play maybe a practise first because I’ve never played
FYI dnd isnt like an MMO you can’t just drop into a game it takes a while to find a game then there’s some prep too do
If a DM is running a practice game it may be advertised in #looking-for-players
Or other places online
This ain’t the only place to find games online

So I have this "passive wisdom (perception), passive wisdom (insight), passive intelligence (investigation)" stuff in my 'senses' box
Where did I get them from ?
Playing as Aasimar Fighter lv1 feylost background
Skills are a different box.
They are the many passive skills everyone gets
Is it picked at random ?
Hello!
It’s what a DM uses as a quick guide to what your character observes about the world
It's based on a character's ability scores.
Oh
Those are skills
I'm talking about senses
Those passive senses are for the DMs to use.
And everyone has them. Take passive perception. You know how some people are dense and you need to yell their name five times to get their attention? Yeah, low passive perception. The dude who picks everything up at a glance without trying - who will hear their name whispered from across the room when they're not listening for it - high passive perception.
Your senses, like darkvision? That's based on the race you choose.
Passive is what happens when the PCs don't say something but might sense something
Like 'dc' if he wants a monster or npc to fool the player ?
Say you hve a passive perception of 18 and someone is hiding nearby with a stealth of 16 then the DM may let you know you hear something in the bushes
Sure. If the PCs aren't searching then their passive perception is what the monster or w/e is stealthing will need to beat to successfully sneak by or whatever
If a monster/NPC wants to lie to a player than the player can ask the DM to roll for an Insight check to see if they think what's being said to them is a lie or not (Insight isn't a lie detector though). The DM may roll a Deception check to oppose the PC's Insight check.
With a passive perception of 10, I ain't noticing anything
Right
It's average, no better or worse.
So when do I use the "active skill" and when do I use the "passive sense" for let's say investigation?
The DM uses the passive ability skills. You the player ask to do an active check.
👍 thanks everyone for the clarification
If the party is casually walking along a hallway, the DM uses everyone's Passive Perception to see if they notice a possible trap.
If a PC thinks there's a trap they ask the DM to do a Perception check roll to look around for a trap.
Active skill is would be you asking the DM “ whilst we are walking through this Forrest I’m keeping my eyes open for dangers” and they would ask you to roll a perception check
The DM decides the appropriate ability skill check to roll for. Don't roll without the DM's permission.
But investigation should always be an active skill, no ?
Yeah don’t just go I would like to perception the room say what you would like to do like as we walk into this room can I see anything out of place
There's already Passive Investigation.
Investigation is actively looking for something specific say you’re in a library and looking for a book on a certain topic
Sherlock Holmes would have a high Passive Investigation and Perception. He would have high active Investigation (deduction) and Perception (noticing minute details) rolls too.
I just don't get how investigation can be used passively
Passive investigation feels more like passive perception
Sorry for bothering
Investigation is actually deduction.
Investigation. When you look around for clues and make deductions based on those clues, you make an Intelligence (Investigation) check. You might deduce the location of a hidden object, discern from the appearance of a wound what kind of weapon dealt it, or determine the weakest point in a tunnel that could cause it to collapse. Poring through ancient scrolls in search of a hidden fragment of knowledge might also call for an Intelligence (Investigation) check.
It can relate to active searching, but it's mostly about figuring things out from the clues in the world that the character can experience but the player has to have described, by the DM or an image.
The lead rules designer puts it like so: "Passive Investigation is a tool for the DM who wants to see if a character notices a clue, without asking the player to make a roll."
That's not RAW, and there's a lot of debate about how or even if it should be used (just Google passive investigation and look at all the blogs/posts/etc.).
Passive perception would be walking into a room and taking in your surroundings, passive investigation would be your brain sorting that info into useful info

Perception: there are scratches on the floor by the bookshelf.
Investigation: the scratches could indicate a hidden door.
Head pats all round good job team
Is there a better place I can look for games bc I've messaged like 8 lfgs and still no response
There are a couple of different places to look.
👆guide to looking for games
Thank you kindly
In this server #find-a-game will provide instructions to to make a looking for DM post in #750812887697588356 .
#looking-for-players have post by DMs.
You also have #looking-for-community
There are also AL games if you’re willing to try those out as you can find #1050206572535623690
There’s a lot more players than DMs. I get 30ish applications per post on r/ lfg. 8 tries and still no bite sounds unlucky but also probably not that out of the ordinary. Just keep trying i guess
There’s also westmarch servers if that type of thing is of interest to you
You also have looking for posts on roll20, dnd beyond, and discord servers for some of the vtts that are out there.
You can also find in person games by going to your local game shops.
Are DND beyond stats accurate
In what sense??
DnDBeyond follows the rules (it is owned by D&D now too).
There are a few areas where DnDBeyond does not support official rules (yet) because of limitations of the data structure that the character sheet functionality is based upon. Supposedly devs are working on making things more flexible with a General Features System and this missing functionality/rules support may eventually be resolved.
But we'd need to know more info on what about DnDBeyond stats are concerning to you
Hi I was just wondering what’s roll20?
It’s a virtual tabletop that can host maps, tokens, and character sheets (among other functions).
quick question coming from a new player. If you ritual cast a spell like detect magic does it burn a spell slot? (I'm a bard)
No
Ritual casting does not consume a spell slot.
hey
can someone explain to me how does dnd work im kinda new and i like the ida of bard

Prob comes under rations
👍Thank you
What is "ability save dc" right below "proficiency bonus" on the character sheet ?
Wait do I have to read everything
Yes
Dam🥲🥲🥲
DC is difficulty class, the number enemies must meet when you use a feature, spell or ability that requires them to make a save
Yeah, I know that part
Why's there a separate box for ?
Its a spot to write it in…
Wouldn't the dc be there on the spell sheet ?
Its just a piece of paper to organize things. If u wanna write it somewhere else go ahead
Ah I guess dragon breadth doesn't come under spells
My bad sorry
There's videos too, if that's any help.
Some characters have save DCs that aren’t for spells.
A monk or a battle master, for example.
Good morning ! DO you know if there is a dnd discord for french people ?
no
🥲 🥲 ok thanks ! 😁
I mean i don't know
Hey everyone I’m really new to dnd and would love any tips to start my first campaign as a dm so if I could get tips from someone that’ll be much appreciated thank you you anyone that can help
Feel free to hit up #dm-discussion as that's where DMs talk shop
My number one tip is to focus on having fun (make sure everyone in the game, even you, are having fun)
Read Sly Flourish return of the lazy dungeon master
As in the fey wilds?
I don’t know actually
I just heard one of my friends mention Fays being their possible race
I tried to look for it in the DND app
I couldn’t find it
Well there are in fact a few playable Race that did live in the fey wilds
hi!!! so i am brand new to dnd practically, only played part of bg3, and i really want to find a party to get into it with, and figured this was the best place to start? i know little to nothing of dnd
That is the Centaur and satyr. I think Fairy is part of that playable Race in DnD but I am not so certain of that.
Okay thank you
Your welcome
There are questions a few playable races that are considered fey now.
hey guys
Quite a few are the monsters of the multiverse
Im having an hard time with bonus actions as an artificer, been playing for 2 -3months now but in fights I still don't know what to do with my bonus action
hello every1
I'm completely new to dnd and wanted to know if it's plausible to just play as a one-time npc or something like that instead of getting into a whole campaign
What sort of artificer?
battle smith
Im fine with my infusions and basic stuff outside of combat but like any artificer I just shoot bolts from my crossbow, fighting devils so my fire bolt cantrip is useless
i usually skip my bonus action every turn
Are you lvl3
So your steel defender is commanded via your bonus action
only if i get to hit with him right?
If you don’t command it it can’t attack
so my bonus action is his movement+action+reaction?
You could just play a one shot, which is a single session adventure.
if i decide to not use my bonus action for a turn i don't get to move him at all?
sweet, thanks. I'll look for that.
Oh really well can u direct me to one of the videos
Movement is one thing, your Action is a different thing, a Bonus Action is a third thing (and a reaction is a fourth, different thing). A character can do each (at least) once per turn. You can forgo your bonus action and still move, no problem.
Adventure League might be suitable for you, which is comprised of one shots and can let you play the same character if you ever decide to play again.
say i made a lvl 1 clr when looking for a game is any of them fine and as a new player

AL games, specifically tier 1 games for character level 1 - 4 tend to be very new player friendly.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Both actually.

@signal wind ^ The above video might also be able to help out
Thx
Hey, I need some help, I am dm’ing for the first time and trying to help my sister who wants to play druid but dont know how their spellcasting works at level one. Do they just have all their level 1 spells known?
Or can only know and use lvl+WisMod?
Sorry if this is just me being dumb
Druids know all druidic spells.
Thank you
They can prepare as many spell as their druid level plus Wis modifier. They have as many spell slots based on their level.
i have taken an interest to playing dnd with some friends but everything feels confusing ngl i understand how the game works from a player perspective but not from a dm perspective how does encounters work how am i supposed to start a campaign how do we even track the stuff that goes on my background is basically BG3 and i already watched the video but i feel like i need to play like a one day session or something to understand any help? 👀
also the only one who will dm is me sadly so yeah
Well first understand that a DM can just make it up. All of it.
i get that part yes
i need to see examples though everything on youtube seems a little too advanced
Second, there's no one way to do it.
Start with a pre-written adventure. I’d recommend a single session adventure to start.
pre written as in scripted ?
Not exactly
Not necessarily
D&D is essentially group storytelling.
Even with the same starting material prepared, every group will end up with their own unique variation.
Third, it's only as complicated as you want to make it. You track what you want to track, how you want to track it. Starting with the hand-holding premade stuff works best for most folks - the common introductory adventures (Phandalin, Stormwreck Isle, etc) but there are no rules. There is no spoon. If your friends haven't ever played either, ya'll can figure it out together. Part of the fun, imho
You’ll need a mix of preparation and improvisation.
well half of my group doesn't speak english so it's a bit hard for us to start i hope you can understand lol
Pre-written adventures take care a lot of the heavy lifting: Setting, NPCs, combat balancing, puzzles, and role playing notes
let's say i got one how to prep
any good examples on youtube or something?
only found the critical role guys and i can't understand half of what they say
Dnd beyond provides a free pre-written adventure.
storm wreck ?
Then the digital helpers will be important - DND Beyond can do the math but you will have to help with the translation(s). Having it digital should help that happen. For generic rules, see the videos linked in this thread. Critical Role does some "Handbooker Helper" videos that are short and make things simple. Once you have that, you'll know what you're looking at on DnD Beyond. Then you can translate for your friends. Stormwreck: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dosi
thanks ❤️
I’m a single father with a full time job, I’ve never played dnd before and I’m not familiar with the rules. 😅 But I like improving dumb senecios and I don’t know where to start anyone wanna hit me with the laymen terms about the basics 😂

Bot got me lol
Yes
The Bot is good. The basics are all there.
does dnd beyond have an encounter tool that tracks health, attacks, player hp, or makes the enemy do it's own attacks etc or nah?
Actually they do
That's more of an encounter calculator.
okay so i started a campaign with stormwreck as the pre written story and added a character
that's pretty much where i am
It sounds like you want a VTT?
Virtual tabletop.
The "My Encounters" is more of an encounter calculator rather than an encounter tracker.
You can run them now as well.
I believe they’re integrating with their vtt as well.
so about the vtt are they on dnd beyond or no?
D&D Beyond has their Maps VTT (it's in beta at the moment).
Are you playing online or in person?
There are also quite a few VTTs out there now.
You may want a VTT like owlbear.rodeo, Roll20, DDB Maps, or Foundry.
Are we allowed to talk about BG3 in here, or strictly normal DND?
oh sick ty!! Still throws me off that you have to pick channels to show up for you lol
which one do you recommend ?
It depends on your budget and/or level of complexity you want with it.
yo
Head on over to #third-party if you want more info on VTTs.
im new
thanks
i've never played dnd before but i found the concept interesting

one last question do people here do a 1 day session or nah? i wanna be a player once before i dm for my friends just to get a feel of what's gonna happen

What do you mean by one day session?
Hi, new to the game and trying to learn a bit before I try to arrange a game.
im new , what do i do

as in a quick campaign with no complexity or long story
You mean an one-shot adventure? (An one-shot is just one session long)
yes
beginner friendly if it's a thing
Where to find a dm to play with
Check #find-a-game and other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels to find games. Warning, it may take you a long time to find a good table because there are waaaaaaaay more players than DMs.
i can understand
dming is the hard part after all
Yes, and DMs tend to be the ones fronting the costs, such as buying physical/digital books.
I’d recommend adventure league. Since games for characters level 1-4 are new player friendly.
Plus you can find AL events in #1050206572535623690
looks promising
thanks
Happy to help.
Stop by #adventurers-league if you want more info about Adventure League.
hello.
Hello!!
I didn't know where to put this question, but how long do you think it would take to become a DM (let alone a good quality one)? I've DM'ed before but it felt like a bit of a mess at times

You can start DMing as asono as you want. Though there are some things you can do that make things easier.
Short games, limited scope, one-shots, Five Room Dungeons. Practice, seek advice, take notes.
Running a pre-written adventures are a good way to work your way up to the complexities of being a DM.
I started with DMing pre-written adventures, then worked my way up to running Wild Beyond the Witchligh, and currently running Strixhaven as a basis to build the world in the way I want.
Cool, thanks to you both for the advice! One-shots were where I started as well, I think my most recent was a module called Blue Alley (which was a ton of fun lol)
@peak geyser you'll be wanting to carefully read the first post in #find-a-game .
ok
I've been asked to be a DM for an organisation that helps young people (DnD is used a tool to help literacy and numeracy skills). I think short games will definitely be good practice.
I bought my first dnd stuff a human monk mini and a red d20 🙂
Anybody want need a new player I'm lf a dm
Check out #looking-for-players.
hi gamers
Hi
i want to make a fat balding 4'2 guy whose possessed by a powerful spirit, is that possible?
I'm not qualified to answer

Absolutely. Dwarf Warlock maybe?
I’m sure #character-discussion and #optimization can provide some crazy ideas.
ooh yea. i kinda want him to be tanky bc his fat gives him natural armor but really slow.... because hes fat.
Lol
🧹 Cleaning up

I’ve done two IRL games but they were campaigns that didn’t go anywhere
Bro…
I think my biggest concern in terms of finding people to play with is communication, since it gets really technical and unfun
Is there a channel where I could meet other new players to potentially play? I think I got a solid grasp on the game and would like to get experience 🤝
You can check out the Looking for Group channels. DMs post games and you can make a personal post as well. You can also look for games on some online platforms like Roll20. A lot of people play over Discord and use online table tops.
The pinned messages in this channel can be super helpful!
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
There is also the event calendar in the server.
There is an upcoming virtual d&d weekend.
Thanks y’all 🤝
I was thinking the same thing
ok are there any like ways you can do a dnd game with more customizable spells?
Feel free to check #1050206572535623690 as well. Stop by #adventurers-league for details.
i kinda want to make a character that can only do stuff with fire, but i really want something like red bind from jojos.
Talk with your DM - some DM's allow homebrew and can work with you to create something that is balanced for their game and setting.
ahh okay - I dont have a group yet but thank you!
For new players, your best bet is going to be using spells where you make the presentation unique but still use the same mechanics.
if you want fire-y stuff that isnt homebrew then wildfire druid or draconic bloodline sorcerer are probably some of your best bets
There's also the fire genasi
Sorry but is Roll20 a website, app? And more importantly is it free?
For example through the strixhaven background , my Druid got access to mage armor.
I still use the mechanics of mage armor but I present it as their Druid staff slams into the ground. Which causes vines to sprout and cover my Druid to become their mage armor.
Roll20 is a website and yes it has a free tier.
It's a website yea, you can use it for free or purchase a premium plan. As a player, you don't really need the sub and can play for free with no issues. Alternatives to it are Foundry or Owlbear Rodeo.
just to give a fire based example, you could flavour this to be a layer of magical flames covering the character
Yep for best results go through the official content and use that to build a character as that will require little to no dm approval.
i know that dnd can be really open-ended but
is a half-frog tiefling a little much?
like its basically a humanod frog-tiefling thing
ahh nvm ill just do a big, standing frog thats well-practiced in fire magic.
That's homebrew or Custom Lineage. Either case, ask your DM for approval.
Is it possible if I want my tiefling character’s background to start with originally being a human, or would that mean they are half human and half tiefling
You can use custom lineage from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything to create something like that if you want - but check with your DM
Okay thank you
Wait that’s Tasha’s Cauldron
What
Where do I find Tasha’s Cauldron
Is it on DND beyond
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (TCoE) is an official sourcebook containing options for players and DMs. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordTCOE
Okay thank you
^ That's the book
Why would you spend money
Because we need dices
And sometimes we can’t bring our phones out cause of WiFi and stuff
because someone has to pay the artists and creators
It’s too expensive tho
If you don't want the book and what it contains, you don't have to buy it. Technically you can play D&D just with the free basic rules.
Anyway, if Reverie wants to buy the book they can.
I did not say they cannot
But I am saying why would I pay to know how to play the game
Well why are we even interjecting into what they want? It's their choice.
If they want those specific character options and want to use it on DnDBeyond with their character sheet tools, they need to buy the book or be involved in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled and someone in the campaign owning that book on DnDBeyond.
DMs who use D&D Beyond will often share their digital content with their players (they will need to have the Master Tier subscription as well).
This is no different then playing in person where people share their physical books at the table.
That said, you don't need to spend any money to learn how to play D&D because the Basic Rules are free. Think of the Basic Rules as a video game demo — it's sample of the full game but if you want more options then you will need to spend money on the full game by "unlocking" more game features (playable races and sub-classes) by buying the books.
can anyone help me with creation of artificer armorer infiltrator yuan-ti build?
Ask in #character-discussion
ok, thanks
Hey, sorry, I just joined the server and wanted to ask other people's advice on where I can find players for my campaigns. I'm still fairly new at dming and don't really know where to get players than just some friends, but I'd like to spread out more so I don't rely on what my friends would play or when they have time, but every dnd server I go to has a "no advertising other servers rule" but one of my campaigns that I WOULD really like more players for is at my friends server because it's easier. I had no idea where to ask this and I didn't want to interrupt the convo at the other chat for this 😅

anyone know how i can find a group for a short term campaign?
See the bot post above.
hello bud
Hi
I'm having troubles choosing what build to make lol
I'm indecisive myself
What king of cleric are u
Currently none
I'm too busy getting over an abusive relationship...
To be active
But life and tempest are always fun
Sorry to hear
leave the relationship 🫡
Already did...
This something that belongs in #non-dnd-topics
It's hard to not associate dnd with him
Oh sorry
I haven't played in a loooong time
Still 5e right
ye
Okay folks let's stay on topic
what's that
Or fairies?
Yes there is a fairy race now
Anyone have any fun ideas for that
Fairy barbarian is always a fun one
lmao
But also a good topic for #character-discussion to get into the details
Also fairy rune knight
