We don't play DND on this server. That said, mobile carries some difficulty - typically online groups use a virtual tabletop, and mobile struggles to do so
dang
you'd use #find-a-game instead of soliciting games in other channels
i did
You still don't solicit games outside of the appropriate channels
?tag new online
i apologize
The above link can give some tips on how to play online, and what platforms or VTTs (Virtual Table Tops) you can use.
thanks!
I'll be disappearing for three hours (in case I get pinged and don't reply), but there are others around to help out!
Good luck my dude

hello fellow D&D'ers I am new to this server and am looking for some campaigns/quests to go on, however it appears that I do not have permission to post in the looking-for-dm page, how do i get permissions to join the chats on here?
Read the instructions over on #find-a-game
Sorry to ask but I never really understood hit dice, if anyone could explain it
You hit dice give you your base HP and is also a resource for gaining HP back during a short rest
For example a lvl1 barbarian has a d12 hit dice so at lvl 1 with a Con score of 14 they would have 14 hp (12+con mod of 2)
On a short rest you can roll your hit dice to get back some HP so same barbarian rolls 1d12 and add it to their current hp upto their max hp

The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
Is there any documentation in french if possible?
I believe the Player's Handbook is published in French, but only as a physical book
Salut! Oui, tu peux trouver le SRD ici: https://dnd.wizards.com/fr/resources/systems-reference-document
...Oh, wait. I can't find the basic rules on that... Un moment svp
The basic rules are not available in French online, the SRD is the only localised digital resource and it's not really newcomers friendly
Okay, here we go: https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/SRD_CC_v5.1_FR.pdf
Omgg thankss
Im new to d&d I needed
De rien. Bonne chance / good luck!
Hahaha thxxx
Can anyone look over my scharcter sheet to see if its good?
We'd be happy to, but please post it in #character-discussion
Hiya! New and happy to be here 🙂
welcome
It's not letting me post my charcter
As a security measure, this server prevents people from posting links when they just joined. That restriction should be lifted after a little while
but im not using links
What are you doing then? Typing out the whole thing?
If you are, it probably got blocked for being too big of a message
yeah but i shortened it so the discord charcter limit shouldn't be an issue
it says upload failed
but i can type in every other chat
I'm not sure of the specifics since I'm not a mod, but I believe this server has a bot that automatically stops messages of a certain size, even if its within character limit. Like if you used a lot of spacing lines or something. It would definitely be best if you put your sheet on a website and then provided the #character-discussion channel with a link. You can even just use google docs if you don't want to have to fill out a digital sheet
If you have more specific questions about why the message might have been blocked, you can ask moderators in the #moderator-support channel
ok thank you hope to play with you in the future
Also I am pretty sure Discord itself has auto-spam detection that might be catching your posts because of their length and/or formatting
Hey everyone! I’m pretty new to DnD and have only done a few sessions of a campaign before. I really want to get back into it and find my first real campaign to be apart of. I was wondering where I should start if I’m trying to get back into it? Thank youu

welcome! The bot post above has some very helpful links and resources to get you started
Thank you sm :) I appreciate it
My pleasure. After you've given this stuff a glace through, let us know if you have any questions. That's what this channel is here for!
hello, im pretty new to dnd. I wanna learn how it works and how I can play it.
Haven't had a single dnd campaign yet
welcome! if you scroll up just a few messages you'll see a post from our server-bot that has lots of helpful resources to get you started!
thank you, btw I wanna learn how to play dnd to I can get inspo to start a TTRPG server for a different verse (SCP to be specific, I imagine stuff like that is considered under homebrew content). Dnd allows you to create your own campaigns with settings different from the standard ryt?
Hi there im jj im new to dnd got into it by d20 and i wanna play to see if its for me
You can certainly take DnD's rule sets as inspiration for other TTRPG ideas, sure. Not everything works super well with DnD's dungeon-crawler, monster fighter focus, but that not exactly a newcomer topic. You can check out our #homebrew channel for more specific ideas / questions, too!

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
I understand, I'll take my time figuring out how dnd works and play a few games of dnd so it becomes easier for me
D&D does allow you to create your own settings. That's why we have the #dm-world-building channel. But, if you want to create a whole new TTRPG instead of using the D&D rules, then that would be considered #non-dnd-topics for this server
I got all those off online and read thru most of it then decided to join in the gc
I did do my homework to figure if its for me
Welcome, small thing but you may want to alter your user name emojis are fun but you’ll fine people will struggle to fine your user name in searches and it’s weird with screen readers
Is that better
Thanks for the help
Marvellous JJ
Any ideas on what sort of character you would make? Any rules of the game you’re struggling with?
I feel dumb from saving throws.
Bard with 0 wis modifier throws VM.
Zombie got -2 modifier.
How does the saving throw work?
Like what number goes where?
Does zombie have to roll 3 or higher on a d20 on saving throw...?
The zombie would roll against the Bard's spell save DC which can vary depending on level
The bard's wisdom modifier doesn't do anything in this situation.
VM is a wisdom saving throw, so the zombie must roll a d20, and add their wisdom mod (-2) to the roll. If that number is equal to or higher than the bard's Spell Save DC, then they succeed. If it is lower than their spell save DC, the zombie fails, and takes the spell's effect
How do I know the spell save DC?
The Spell Save DC is the number to beat. The Saving Throw is the number you roll, trying to beat that DC.
Each class has rules for calculating their Spell Save DC in their Spellcasting rules, but for the Bard in this case it's 8 + their proficiency bonus + their Charisma modifier
It is 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Modifier (Charisma, in this case)
There is a box to write this on your character sheet
Ah great, that's all then.
Thank you 🙂
@fallen surge it's still not letting me post i talked to the admins they said they couldn't do anything about it since it was a copy paste form google doc but i even tried typing it out but still didnt work
I assume you’re exceeding Discord’s character limits so it’s trying to convert it to a file upload, which is not permitted.
I’d recommend just sharing a link to your Google Doc instead.
i shortened it as much as possible so it wouldnt do that
so can i post it here and then delte after like 10 min?
if thats an issue
Copy an pasting your character sheet into discord (even a shortened version) is not a good idea
i tried links still dont work
What happened when you tried?
Are you on a phone?
no pc
"upload failed" means you are attaching a file instead of a website URL
aint no way cause why owuld typing it without attaching files make it say the same thing
Txt to long, got bad words in it
don't "type out" your character sheet. Put on a website like D&D Beyond or Google Docs, and then post the URL to that site so that other people can click it to view your sheet
I tried that already it didnt work
I'm sorry if yall are getting frustrated
im trying my hardest
not at all. We want to help.
ok
Nothing was blocked by our moderator tools, except that file uploads are disabled.
When you put the website URL, what did it say when it failed?
hold on imma try one more time
But copying a link and pasting it here should generally work.
I was doing that in charcter disscusion
I meant “here” as in this server, not this channel.
I don’t know what to tell you, then. Sorry.
its fine yall tried
So when you paste the link into the message box like when you are typing.. it doesn't let you paste something like this?
But you are posting messages here just fine. It's the same text box
Tried saying hi in what?
charcter disscusion
So, you just typed "hi" in character discussion and it said "upload failed"?
yeah
That is extremely strange, and is probably an issue with your discord itself. Perhaps try just refershing the page or something. I'm at a loss
Is discord on PC an app or website? Maybe update or restart required
app
When in doubt reload Discord.

Welcome. The bot post above (and also linked in the pinned messages) has a bunch of links to get you started!
Check out id:customize.
Any reason why I can’t choose any other monastic tradition except for way of the open hand? Like in the player handbook there’s a lot of other ones but I can’t access them
You need to purchase the book, the specific subclasses themselves, or be in a campaign with someone who owns the content and has enabled sharing.
You can buy individual playable races and sub-classes for $1.99 (sometimes as a bundle for $10)
On D&D Beyond, the only options that are available for free are what is in the SRD Basic rules. Each class only comes with 1 subclass for free.
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
How much would you say I would need to know to play a D&D session, I have never played before
The first four chapters on the free Basic Rules on character creation and the combat rules.
i have the players handbook and i understand charecter creation
Understanding your character sheet, knowing about the different kinds of dice rolls you may be asked to make, and have a general idea of the core game mechanics.
Might want to move your stats around to make dex a little higher.
Side note, you can just share the digital version of your character sheet by making it public.
Thank you I appreciate the help
You can also find visual guides for combat in DMs guild
hey yall so im trying to make a ranged attack that hits all creatures within a radius so how would i notate that
like for targets
Could I edit on the pdf directly in dnd beyond?
because all ive seen so far are attacks notated with "One target"
Is there a specific ability you're referring to that would let you do this?
its a homebrew attack im making called Screech and so because its a sound i want everything that can hear it to be affected by it
and i havent found an attack called screech on beyond so im trying to figure it out
I recommend not homebrewing if you're new to the game. That said, we do have #homebrew to help folks make their own material, so that'd be a better place to discuss.
yeah ive heard people talk about staying away from homebrew if youre new but i have a really specific joke that i wanna get across with the monster who uses this attack
but thanks ill check the channel out
when starting to play should it be online or try to play in person?
Up to you. There are pros and cons to both.
D&D Beyond is a digital character sheet, and you can convert it to a PDF afterwards. I know fillable PDF character sheets exist, but I don't know where exactly to get one. I think WotC's website
This would be where, if you need the link: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
^ was just about to post that

The rules linked above tell you how. You need a group, character sheets, dice (physical or digital), and an adventure. Oh, and imagination.
why is finding a group the hardest part
Scheduling among four or five people is tough, and also establishing compatibility is tough. Put them together, and it's a wonder anyone plays ever!
Imagine trying to plan a 2-4 hour get-together with 4 other people multiple times a month! Scheduling is the final boss
Also, there are more players than DMs.
so I can just make a character of my choice. and choose my own class, stats, and when I do that I'm done?
Do you have a group yet?
Your best approach is to use the already established content to bring a concept to life. The thunder wave spell does exactly what you want to do.
Also home brewing mechanics require DM approval.
no I dont but I dont care I'm willing to pair with anyone honestly
So if you're making a character without a group, you're making it for practice. Which is a good thing! But that means your choices don't matter exactly because you need to abide by what parameters the DM sets, once you find one.
So yeah, choose what strikes your fancy!
so if thats the case does that mean the dm makes my character
i am the dm so i dont think itll be an issue haha
No, your DM would approve of your character.
No, the DM just sets parameters. Like what stat method to use, what races are/aren't allowed, etc.
If I say I wanna be a ranger elf would that be allowed?
That's honestly up to the DM when you have one. For now, go for it!
If you're using official content, though, odds are good it'll be fine, but we can't predict what will happen at the specific table you find yourself at eventually.
would the dm tell me what I can choose from?
Yep.
oh sweet
Or specify what isn't available. But the DM sets the boundaries of the game.
in that case all I need is a character sheet and I'm done, so long as I find friends/strangers to play with
Making a character helps with learning the rules (what a bonus/modifier is, what features do, etc.), so it's helpful even if you don't use that specific character. But as a player, you should know the character-creation rules and combat rules, mainly.
but the dm sets that stuff up I thought no?
Then can you clarify what you are trying to do?
I was under the impression that you were trying to create a player character.
If not and you are looking for an attack for an npc, then you're better off finding an npc that does what you want and present it as something else.
The DM will tell you what options you have and how you can/can't build the character. But they only give you the guidelines: you follow them yourself. Hopefully that's clearer.
oh
If you're wanting to make characters before you find a group and use the characters you create. You could create characters that follow the guideline's for dnd's official community campaign called Adventure League.
Yes. Though the elf race and the ranger class are both part of the base rules of the game, so 99.9% of the time they will be allowed. The only reason it wouldn't be is if the DM was running a very specific campaign or wanted to include something in their world's lore that would make the choice problematic, like if elves don't exist in their world or something. That is definitely not the norm though
ohh sweet
ive already figured out the attack
its an attack that rolls 1d4 plus charisma modifier reveresed (eg. CHA -5 = +5) with "Sound" damage, a range of 10/20 ft. and all creatures within the radius have to roll a CON saving throw and all outside of normal range roll with advantage (because the further you are from a sound the less loud it seems)
and since its "Sound" damage all deafened creatures are immune to its effects
Or they might recommend against choosing ranger because it'll be in a city and you might not get to use the class's abilities to the fullest. So it varies, but Colossus is right—it'll very likely be okay.
We have the AL Player's guide in the server plus channels dedicated to AL such as #adventurers-league .
Again is this for a PC or NPC?
im tempted to make it deafen all affected creatures till their next round as well but i dont think i will
npc monster
Why not just use the harpy statblock?
Or banshee? Though this really isn't the channel for this discussion.
well since the npc is based on a joke i already started using the giant rat statblock and changed it up a bit
now I just have to find people
If you want to discuss homemade NPC stat blocks, #dm-discussion or #homebrew would be the channel to do so
its basically a giant rat but gianter with only 2 homebrewedish things added to it

Actually yeah, banshee would be better. But we're getting out quite out of topic, so it would be best to continue in #dm-discussion
sorry about that
The bot post above directs you to the server's Looking for Game/Group channels.
Are you looking for in person or online play?
Both are fun and worth doing if you have the opportunity.
im back
I would do either or
preferably online cuz I dont want people in my house unless they brought lunch
For in person you can play dnd in public places such as the library and a game shop as those tend to host dnd sessions.
As for how to find games in this server specifically for playing online, there are a couple of options:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league , then check out #1050206572535623690
There's also:
- The Looking for Players & Groups in the Dnd beyond forums page
- The Looking for Group Listings in roll20
- Plus discord servers for VTTS such as owlbear rodeo, fantasy grounds, Alchemy RPG, and others.
I’m a new player and I’m trying to find a group to play with. Does anyone have a roll20 game I can join maybe
Check #find-a-game. Also, Roll20 has its own LFG.
Greeting all. For all intents and purposes, I'm new to D&D. I used to play in the 90's, but that was AD&D.

Okay thank you
Hi Im new 🧍♂️ can someone teach me how to play dnd seems cool but like im not sure what to do or where to start I only know a couple things like character creation but thats it
Just dm or ping me if you could help me out but anythings appreciated
The bot post up above is a good place to get started.
I just joined a game and would love some help understanding when to use my ability and also how to build my class. I'm a Tiefling Rogue with pirate background.
how do i find out if i have an advantage roll or not?
Welcome! There’s a few handy links right above your message that can get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
What do you mean by “when to use my ability”? Which ability?
A bunch of features will say they give advantage on a roll.
Either a rule will say, or your DM will tell you.
The DM can also give you advantage based on the circumstances
And wdym by “how to build my class”?
Faerie Fire, for example, can give advantage on attack rolls:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/faerie-fire
So I kind of understand "sneak attack", I just wanting more of an example of when and how to use it for the best affect. And I'm only lvl 1, but I was wondering should I predetermine what skills I'm going to acquire or just let it come naturally and see how it affects my character?
You need to use either a finesse or a ranged weapon.
And you either need to have advantage on the attack, or you need an enemy of your target beside them.
(That enemy could be your ally or someone hostile to the both of you.)
Oh okay so it's either or and not both. Gotcha!
and any disadvantage takes away my ability to use sneak attack correct
And then you can do it once per turn — whether that’s your turn or someone else’s.
Oh that's awesome!
So commonly you’d get to use it once on your turn, and then you might be able to apply it to an opportunity attack on someone else’s turn, if they move away from you.
I've been very timid to take fights, but this definitely gives me more confidence since we have a paladin and monk that are in the front lines.
If that’s the case, you could probably help pick off enemies from afar.
Use a bow against whoever’s next to your frontliners.
That's what I'm thinking, awesome! Thank y'all so much! Very new to D&D, but super excited to be apart of the community!
Hello, me and my friends are new to dnd. Do you guys think its possible to find a dungeon master that is willing to play with a bunch of newcomers to teach us?
I recommend Roll 20! That's what I did with my group of newcomers, it is difficult to find a free one that isn't full though so you might want to talk that over with your group.
okay thanks for the tip
Welcome!
I've made my character or smth qwq
Character
Is that ur cat in ur pfp?
is there anything i should do before trying to find a game
Hello! just recently got into D&D after watching some of the critical role content on yt. but damn is there a lot to learn lol
Welcome!
Yeah I have only been playing 6 months but I’ve spent 50+ hours on out of game research
Thank you!
6 months! damn lol. I've no idea how it even works yet lol aside from throwing dice and some epic RP scenarios. I did do the character sheet but again very confusing lol
Dm me and I’ll send some short videos/text to sum it up.
on the character sheet if I remember correctly it gave options about ummm was it the story lines or background stuff?
It has both
I was wondering what is the kind of background / setting they're using when they play on CR?
like the world setting? or is that just based on the campaign mode of the DM's choosing?
It depends on the character backstory there religion alignment etc
Your character has its own individual background and characteristics that make it unique but the dm’s job is to introduce it to the campaign.
I feel like
I either went too hard or not hard enough on character backstory
I'm trying to figure out how to create a new character so I can ask you the things that confused me in the beginning of making the character
Honestly unless you wrote a book on your character your backstory probably isn’t too long
Are you using dnd beyond?
As far as I know, it's during character creation that you choose your own background or where it's decided. As far as the setting of the whole party, unless I'm wrong it's a group decision what realm/lore/universe that the campaign is set in, or it's proposed by the DM and people join or not
Yes! found it now, i'll get back to you on the thing that confused me
That is accurate
I'm still brand new though
Do yall have tips or anything for most of dnd lol, I’ve never played in the dnd system or used dnd beyond
@lyric fjord so when it comes to me filling out things like my characters faith and stuff on dnd beyond that won't really matter as the DM's world might not have that god?
I’d go on you tube and look up beginner rules and guides
Thanks!
am I allowed to post snips/pics of the dnd character creation sheet on this to ask what certain things are?
No the dm is supposed to incorporate your character into the campaign unless they specifically mention you can’t have something listed on your character
I'd watch the "Handbooker Helper" videos on Critical role as a start, it's a pretty good visual resource if reading pages doesn't really click. Which is where I was getting stuck
I’m not sure actually but dm me if you need to
I'll give it a watch Tolver, damn should of done all this sooner lol I've got a week off work so was hoping to dive into something before I went back
lol
So this is what seems tricky about DnD. The answer is yes and no. It's possible your dm might not include that deity in the realm, but it's something your character is based around so it will affect how the DM tries to manipulate the world around your character
I thought going by the find-a-game tab DM's already had their worlds and story laid out. is it an easy job for them to fill in the blank spots to make everything work around the players?
Like someone following a more "lawful good" deity, wouldn't usually get along with someone following a "chaotic evil" deity
Do u mean having a character assigned to you?
ohhhh so you mean before the campaign starts the DM will have us create our characters? it won't be ones we've already got existing?
Typically a DM will present a campaign's setting, theme, and tone to the players. Based on the information given by the DM it's recommended to build a character that is compatible with the campaign.
For example, if the campaign is about traveling the world to collect artifacts, then creating a character that cares about their bakery and has no desire to travel won't be very compatible with that campaign.
However, if the campaign is about a small town that is about to be attacked by bandits, then that character is perfect for the campaign.
ahhh I see
Though if you want to create a character first and then join a game with your already existing character, a community campaign like Adventure League would be great for that.
haha maybe they want to find the long lost cook book of mediah with the hidden recipe for the ultimate cookies
ohhh Adventure league? what's that? how would I get involved in it? also if I may ask, could I post the characters back story from one I did make just so I know if it's too much or too little?

ah thank you I'll give this a look over in a moment. much appreciated!
As the bot post says, it's D&D's official community campaign.
The biggest appeal is that it allows you to a create a AL legal character and allows you play that character in any AL adventure, whether that adventure is in person or online.
As long as it's an AL adventure and your character is the appropiate level, your character can participate in it.
Is DnD confined to being mainly fantasy or could it also be a blend of between Sci-Fi and fantasy?
You can use any setting really, it really depends on the group that you play with.
For example, the Unsleeping City campaign by Dimension 20 takes place in modern day New York city.
Even in the current Forgotten Realms setting you Spelljammer, which takes place in space and you deal with giant space hamsters.
hello i was just wondering what does a bard having proficiency with an instrument do? its my first time playing as one and I've no idea what it does
Well in dnd many classes, Bards included, can cast spell.
As such, they require a spell casting focus in order to cast their spells.
For bards, their spellcasting focus can be an instrument.
ohh so having proficiency with it makes it capable of being a focus?
Well by default Bards get proficiency with instruments of your choice.
Full details here in the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#SpellcastingFocus
okay thanks
It should also be noted, that being proficient in an instrument can allow be more effective in certain skill checks that the DM may ask you to do.
If you make a skill check that incorporates your instrument, you can add your proficiency bonus to the check
This really doesn’t have much to do with them getting proficiency in it
thanks 👍
Is there a oneshot server I'm supposed to find? I am completely new to Dnd and discord and had one DM block me apparently after saying we'd meet today and then another DM just tell me "better luck next time" because I didn't know where to go to meet for the DnD session. I'm so frustrated right now
Most often DMs will invite you to their own server for their games, unless the oneshots are a part of a community campaign, in which case the server would be specified.
Man I want a zombie apocalypse champion
When you say “champion” are you referring to the fighter subclass by that name, or are you just using that word to mean “character”?
Can there be more than one class person in a group
Yep. There’s no restrictions
Cause I kinda wanna multi-class with necromancer
If you're new to the game I suggest you stick with one class for now so you can learn it instead of multiclassing.
If you want to take some levels in wizard while there is already a wizard in your party, that is no issue, rules wise
Yes don’t worry I’m already gonna do that until I become as great as you, oh Old Man of Wisdom🥹
Heck yes
I have 40+ years of D&D experience ahead of you 😛
There’s a meme about a D&D party of all clerics called the A-Men
Yes
Okay sorry
Im trying to get into dnd, along with my bf (he kinda refuses to do it without me). Ive been in a very unofficial party (me and my friends, literally like 20 minutes into the first campaign everything fell apart and we never really reconvened) but i don't really know how.

I mean ive kinda already run through those steps
Where can I find the moves abilities for clerics
"Moves abilities"?
What about group
They meant “moves and abilities” (class features)
Clerics have spell lists..
Yes
Do all magic staffs look the same? Like does one staff of healing look like another or can they have unique designs because like I don’t really like the one used as the example
Yes where is that
Yummy thank you
The Dungeon Master's Guide has illustrations. How they look is flavour and flavour is free.
their spells can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/class/cleric?sort=level
Does my DND cleric character have to look like the ones in the pictures
What something looks like is just flavor. It has no baring on the actual game mechanics. So, as long as you don’t change the rules of something, most DMs will allow you to reflavor it however you like
See above 👆
Okay
Okay thanks I just wanted it to fit my character aesthetic a little more so just a simple wooden staff shape with a stone or something or even just carvings
You decide how your own character looks like.
WOAHHH
Heck yes
My gf is currently drawing my character for me so I’m really excited to see my ideas brought into reality
Sounds awesome
I can’t actually afford the guide book so I can’t check the illustrations
I will definitely buy it one day
But as of right now I can’t spare money on a book
Use Google Image Search for inspiration
Yeah that’s what I plan on doing
My gf is receiving all my inspiration pictures so she can then make the drawing so it’ll include the staff
Please don't type in caps
if you are new to the game, I would save homebrewing (making your own versions) for later games
Wait whats staff of the life herald? It looks so cool like the iconic medical symbol
The cleric spell list,
Its so beautiful 🥹
Ethereal beauty in plain sight
If I found out about these spells any sooner,
I would’ve been through so many sessions😢
Oh yeah how do you use spell lists? Do I just keep it saved for a session or can I assign spells to my character?
As a cleric you know all clerical spells for the spell slot levels you know at your class level. So a level 1 cleric knows all 1st-level cleric spells.
You have to prepare your spells during each long rest.
Okay so I just need to keep the list of spells for my level on hand when I’m playing a game and choose which to charge during the long rest?
You would note them in your spell list on your character sheet.
Yeah that’s what I wanted to know
I need to add them to the list
How do I do that, does it work on the app?
Yes, D&D Beyond makes it easier for you to add your prepared spells.
Aside from things the bot has already told me, what can i do to get into dnd more? Find games (outside of the channel) and just generally have better game knowledge
You've read through the Basic Rules?
I did a while ago, i probably should again
What are the components?
Couldn't hurt, but I think most game knowledge really sticks if you actually play, so I'd recommend finding a group. You might also look up actual gameplay on YouTube or Twitch. While many of these shows are produced entertainment (meaning they don't always accurately reflect gameplay among amateurs), they can help you see different styles and such.
Bro is quizing me 💀
Spell components are described here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Components
Read the individual spells, some will require spell material components with gold value.
Ahh the letters are the types I’m stupid
Ive watched a couple of campaigns so i understand the basics of like, battle, and exploration, and social interaction
Yeah I just need fireflies and holy water for the ones I’m adding currently so easy
Then maybe give the rules another skim and find a group. In addition to the channels here, I made a guide for other venues to search: #third-party message
Im (i think) ready to do a basic campaign? But like i wanna be sure because i don't exactly want to make a fool of myself.
No, you don't need to gather mundane material components. Those are all "handwaved" and in a spell component pouch.
The only ones you need to get are ones that have a gold value and/or are consumed by the casting of the spell.
There's an old saying: No plan survives contact with the enemy. Meaning you can never be 100% ready for a situation before you get into it. You will almost certainly make mistakes, so don't sweat that. Just be ready to learn from those.
Okay got thanks
You can either use a component pouch or a focus (holy symbol for a cleric/paladin or wand/rod/staff/crystal ball for wizards/warlocks/sorcerers). Even with a focus you still need material components that have a gold value.
Thats a good saying to remember, ill have to start looking for a group and a campaign. Thank you for the little incite and tidbits of help.
Good luck!
For a cleric who’s main focus is healing in a rp heavy campaign what spells would be best? I looked at them all and I’m not too sure
So her staff of healing would handle the mundane items?
Or I need a holy item too?
You probably wouldn't start with a Staff of Healing unless the DM said you begin with a magic item.
Yeah it’s greenlit for this campaign that’s why she has it
Remember you'll get some automatically depending on which Domain you choose. Beyond that, the nice thing about Clerics is they can change their spells up every morning, so don't be afraid to try some out.
Okay thanks!
That's a tad OP for a level 1 character...
¯_(ツ)_/¯
But hey that's your table...
Spell selection is more for #character-discussion.
The campaign is a lenient one and rp/exploration heavy with minor combat so she’s pretty set as a healer and doesn’t really fight unless necessary, her dragonborn girlfriend handles that aspect
It’s just a calm simple one for fun nothing serious or anything
But I can always change things for the campaign if needed
I mean it’s just a simple game between me, my gf, my dm friend and a couple other friends so it’s not supposed to be as serious as a standard game if that makes any sense idk
I wish my friends were into dnd 💀 my bf said he'd join a campaign with me but he doesn't really understand dnd so idk how well that would go
My gf plays occasionally and she’s the one who got me into it so we just want to play a very lenient fun and wacky game casually
If I enjoy that then I’ll get serious and make a legit sheet that’s normal and follows standard rules
Like no items or anything that she wouldn’t have immediately etc
Wait how do I determine my level as a cleric
What do you mean?
On the Character sheet, it says level
Are you multi-classing?
The DM would tell you which level you start off at.
when you get a Dungeon Master and a campaign they will tell you what level to start at. Most new characters are level 1
No
If you're new to D&D you would probably start at level 1.
Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma
Okay thank you
Also what’s a ranger
Is it a sub class
Its a class
ranger is a class yeah
Ohh okay
okay thank you

What if you write numbers on each side of 2-3 pencils
Does that work
I play DND in school, we can’t have our phones out
Okay
What race/species is most recommended for clerics
None of the races are really something that makes or breaks a class, just go with what you like or find interesting
Okay thank you
Orc gives you strength bonus if that helps
Well clerics want wisdom
But also a lot of tables use the optional rules to change those boosts

I don’t understand how AC works
When an attack is made against something, the attacker makes an attack roll. Compare it to the target's AC. If it is equal to or higher than the AC, then the attack hits and subsequent stuff may occur, like damage being dealt.
When you use it
Okay thank you
Whenever a creature makes an attack roll against your character, if the result is equal to or greater than your AC, they score a hit and you take damage
Basically, whenever a monster attacks you, it'll have to get as high as your AC, so higher is better.
Okay thank you
Does AC count towards all kinds of damage, or just physical?
it doesn't count toward damage directly, no
any attack roll must meet or beat the AC
if it doesn't, it misses. if it does, it hits, and most attacks will deal damage on a hit like a fire bolt or using a weapon like a sword or bow
Ah yeah, that's what I meant.
I was wondering if psychic damage needed an AC check, but then I know. Thanks.
only if it's an attack roll
for example, Dissonant Whispers says the target must make a Wisdom saving throw
whereas a Soul Knife character using psychic blades is making attacks
If 2 people roll the same number for initiative, what do you do?
"If a tie occurs, the DM decides the order among tied DM-controlled creatures, and the players decide the order among their tied characters. The DM can decide the order if the tie is between a monster and a player character. Optionally, the DM can have the tied characters and monsters each roll a d20 to determine the order, highest roll going first."
Hey is there a experienced bard to help me create my character (maybe in dm if possible) I am new to everything

hello, besides YouTube, how can I watch live and join as spectator of DnD players to learn the game? Is there a channel or a platform? Or can I look here and join and watch via discord?
there are lots of live play and podcasts for dnd games
critical role is very famous. But there is also the dungeon dudes or the more production heavy dimension 20
for example
Those kinds of public-streaming games are already welcoming spectators in, so they're the easiest place to start.
Private groups may often prefer to keep things private.
How do I find a group to play with? I live in Greece
In person, game stores, board game cafés, meet ups, conventions.
Online? The world is at your fingertips.
Thank you

The links should help. They have the rules as well as instructions on using the server's Looking for Group/Game channels. You can start a group yourself and learn the rules along the way or learn the rules then try to find a group.
do you know if there's groups out there that are welcoming, especially for helping ppl out? almost like a teacher or mentor or sort cuz all the rules and such are still incredibly daunting with looking them over
from an outsider perspective it's so scary and seems so exclusive 😭
Not a lot of groups explicitly call themselves out as willing to teach newbies, but you can (and should) ask.
It's definitely not exclusive; it's just a matter of finding people who want similar things and are willing to take the time to teach.
that seems straightforward enough. any tips on exactly where I could go to start asking?
You could reply to the posts in #looking-for-players. If you have a local game/hobby/comic store, library, or school club, they may have D&D events as well.
I hope it's not! just an observation from outsider looking in wanting to join 😅
currently at college. no clubs :/
Start one!
but thank you!
ahhh I could never haha
You do you, but I'll bet money there are a bunch of folks in a similar boat at your school.
oh there are. I'm just terrible at meeting people. and with no experience it isn't right for someone like me to start one
Why not you’re LFG maybe there is a DM out there looking for players
I was like that then started one
You will be surprised how many people want to try
to start a club you'll need 5 people, I have no idea how to even begin that
Just make one and ask people if they want to show up
I just emailed everyone on campus
Like 12 people showed up
6 stayed for good
I'll see if I can ask my dorm gc or post on insta. thanks!
So excited for you
Can I join virtually lol, new comer here would love to join something
Hello.
Anyone played lost mines of phandalin?
Lots of people have, if you have a question about the adventure you'll wanna ask in #1029833015423143957
Online games are pretty common. #find-a-game gives you instructions on starting the search in this server.
How does shatter work. Does the warlock have to roll for shatter, or does it autocast and then npcs makes constitution save on 13?
How does the GM roll constituon save on NPCs?
The spell does what its description says it does. This means everyone in the 10-foot-radius makes a Con save.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/shatter
A sudden loud ringing noise, painfully intense, erupts from a point of your choice within range. Each creature in a 10-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Constitution saving throw. A creature takes 3d8 thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature made of inorganic material such as stone, crystal, or metal has disadvantage on this saving throw.
Do the NPC just roll a D20, and if its over 13, its good?
Or do I add the NPCs con (+x)?
The warlock rolls the 3d8 damage as the above, and the GM will roll a Constitution saving throw via rolling a 1d20 and adding the Constitution modifier of the monsters plus the proficiency bonus if applicable.
There is no "autocast" in D&D.
All creatures, including PCs and enemies, have to make a Con saving against the caster's spell DC.
but some spells require to hit before dealing dmg right? Shatter just roll dmg and then we see if its a save.
Spells either ask for an attack roll for the caster or a saving throw from the affected creatures.
Some do, this one is just a saving throw for all targets in its area of effect. Not an attack roll.
The NPC we are against is an ogre with Con 16 (+3) so we roll d20 and add +3 and see if its above and then reduce dmg by half?
Affected creatures need to roll their Con saving throw equal or greater than the spellcaster's DC.
So d20+3 (because its the modifier for the npc)
Yeah.
d20 plus the appropriate modifier plus Proficiency Bonus (if they have proficiency in that ability score saving throw).
thanks!
How do I know when it ask for caster throw or saving throw?
If the caster is making a throw, I do spell DC on the NPC?
The spell should say
can you show me an example of a spell for each?
I'm brand new GM and still learning.
Hiya. I'm completely and fully new to dnd so could someone tell me the basics
Sacred Flame requires a save. Fire Bolt requires an attack roll
When a caster casts a spell, the spell would say if it requires an attack roll or a saving throw. Monster statblocks will include the spell DC if they're spellcasters.
so spellsave DC is +14 because our wizards spellsave is equal to that?
and NPC gotta roll 14 or above to pass?
DC is 8 + Proficiency Bonus + relevant modifier (Int for wizards, for example)
Yes, enemies have to roll a total of 14 or higher against the wizard's spell save DC 14.
so Guiding Bolt.
- Cleric roll to hit - He rolls above NPCs AC
- NPC rolls above Spell save DC
- Nothing hits.
Correct?
Sorry if its a dumb question. I'm just really dumb at magic apparently
If it's an attack spell there isn't usually a spell save unless it says so in the description
Which spells have spellsave DC then?
Sacred Flame, for example
😮 I have lied for my entire team for so many adventures now. (we're all new)
I think as a general rule, assume it's a spell attack roll unless it says otherwise
Read the individual spells
There are a couple spells that involve both a Spell save and an attack roll, but they're rare and that will also be in the text. Usually a spell is either an attack roll against the targets AC or a spell save against the caster's DC
And the spell description will tell you what to use
Oh watch out for spells like flame blade also. That's using a melee attack but you still treat it as a spell attack roll
So fire bolt never miss? Since there isnt a spell save or anything?
It misses if the spell attack roll is below the targets AC
oh ofcourse. my bad
The other giveaway is the spell usually says "if it hits" or some words to the effect
Some spells like magic missile will just do damage no matter what
A spell where you roll to hit will say "make a melee spell attack" or "make a ranged spell attack".
That means you're making an attack roll, so the caster is the one putting forth the effort here: they roll to hit.
A spell that asks for a saving throw means the target is the one making the effort.
They have to roll to avoid it.
But unless the spell explicitly asks for both, like ice knife, then only one side is rolling that d20.
Im saving this. It made so much sense!
Attack rolls are compared to the target's AC. If the total equals or exceeds their AC, that's a hit. If it's less, that's a miss.
Saving throws (and ability checks) are compared to a DC. For spells, that's the caster's spell save DC. But the math is the same: if it equals or exceeds the DC, it's a success.
Meets it beats it rule ^

hello
For an empire composed mainly out of beast races and prioritizes strength, what are the best races to put in there? So far I got Dragonborn, Minotaurs, and Aarakocra but I’m open to suggestions.
#dm-world-building can probably help with that.
Satyr, tabaxi, leonin, and yeah, worldbuilding.
Minotaur
Does unarmed attacks do bludgeoning damage?
Yes
Perfect!
No pop-eyeing the slightly nerfed mummy lord then
On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier.

Yep, thanks!
any guide without needing a physical handbook? I wanna know how levels work

They are how your character advances
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
are ability score improvements the only thing there is when it comes to leveling up? (in terms of stats)
There's magic items that can increase them, too.
No some dms may let you forgo it for a feat
Some feats are what's colloquially referred to as a "half-feat".
Meaning they increase a single ability score by +1, then give you some other bonus to go with it.
aight ty
(Instead of the two +1s from taking an ASI, or a feat that provides no increase to your ability scores.)
so if a player levels up they choose 2 stats to get a +1 on?
Or one stat to get +2 on.
Or a feat.
When they reach an Ability Score Improvement for their class, that is.
It doesn't happen every level.
what levels doesn't it happen on?
It will say in the class table
Yeah, it varies from class to class.
But all classes get their first at level 4.
(Fighters get the most.)
Typically it happens on 4,8,12,16,19
Rogues get an extra one at 10th
FIghters get 2 extra ones at 6th and 14th
where to see how classes level up? roll20.net says every single level gives a proficiency bonus
Players handbook
Even the free basic rules will show you the table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes
It’s in the basic rules
can anyone here give me a hand with picking out spells for a shadow magic sorcerer? im practically clueless tbh- and i need to make a lvl 20 character
Good question for #character-discussion
This channel is for new-to-D&D folks get started and learn the core rules and game mechanics
i went there already, they said come here
that list on roll20 shows what the proficiency bonus is at that particular level. It isn't +2 at first that then adds a +2 at 2nd to equal +4.. it's at levels 1-4 your proficiency bonus is +2
Again this channel is for new to D&D folks and focusses more on core rules and game mechanics. For suggestions on character builds, #character-discussion is the best channel
ohh that explains it all
so the proficiency bonus is just +2 at base, then +1 to that original number every ~4 levels, right?
basically, yeah..
Most groups don't charge. Everything in #looking-for-players should be free to play.
(But please don't specify your exact age here.)
thanks for the help, and won't do it in the future sorry about that
As a newcomer i'm looking to join a campaign quickly : D
Check #find-a-game and it may take a while to find a table that's a good fit (hours to months) because there are waaaaay more players than DMs.
planning on running the lost mine of Phandelver for my family soon. I've read through the first 2 parts and made some sheets to organise npcs and enemies and such. Are there any tips for running a campaign from source material for the first time? (in the right channel this time aha)
Well actually you probably want to discuss DM tips in #dm-discussion
And if you need to dive into adventure details, please use #1029833015423143957 (we have an area specifically for that adventure)

do clerics strictly have to be religious/get their powers from a deity of some kind?
No, they don't need to worship a deity to get their divine powers.
They can be devoted to some type of ideal or force.
In certain campaigns, a cleric might instead serve a cosmic force, such as life or death, or a philosophy or concept, such as love, peace, or one of the nine alignments. […] If you are devoted to a pantheon, cosmic force, or philosophy, your cleric features still work for you as written.

hi guys, new to this, always loved DnD related things but have never had the bottle to suck it up and get stuck in and play it. i dont know why, possibly the stigma that went with it when i was younger, but im getting on now, 37 and my kids both love the fantasy genre, and have been going on about DnD so i attempted a game with them as a DM recently, it went well, quite relaxed, and we had fun. I didnt have a clue like but did my best. i would love to get involved in a game myself however, to make a character and loose myself in it. i wouldnt class myself as a shy person but for some reason the thought of playing with strangers has always put me off. anyway, i thought id put my interest out there and hopefully someone in the wirral area is hosting a game maybe? online or in person? either or is good, or even online, cheers guys
I dont know where Wirral is, but you should totally keep an eye out for local facebook groups, or events on meetup.com looking for new players
You could also check in with local gamestores or libraries to see if they have any D&D groups active
wirral is just over the river mersey from liverpool. thanks pal, i always have a nose on facebook and things, local groups, i notice they have events going every now and again for newcomers. like i said, when it comes to it i generally get abit of stage fright, i would like a small group ideally, all new and learning together. i think the longer i leave it the harder its going to be, the thought of being some old dude and all kids showing up to play puts me off. so the idea of finding a few like minded people around the same age appeals abit more
Any tips for finding a game for a first timer?

thank you!
Look for board game cafés and the like. I know you have them oop North.
I will do thanks pal
How fast should i level up my low level party in milestone leveling
How low level?
Also a good #dm-discussion channel question for future reference
It's all right - this is a big server.
I like to level up the party after they hit certain points of the adventure/story where it makes sense.
I think it’s good practice to get the party to level 3 by the end of the 3rd or 4th session
Then slow down a bit
Anybody starting a campaign and need a beginner
same... I would be in!!
@frail jetty @tropic stratus check this post from just a few minutes ago if you like #dnd-newcomers message
did. thanks
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Hey so find a game mentions how to find players, but where would one advertise a (trying to learn DM) homebrew game?
What do you mean by "advertise" if not to find players?
It is to find players I'm just not sure as to where to do so
Sorry if the wording of that first message was bad
Then yeah, you should follow the instructions you already found in #find-a-game.
Unless by "homebrew game", you mean something that's not D&D.
Ahhhh ok, thank you! It is D&D I'm just new to DMing. I used to run a homemade game until someone told me it ran similarly enough to translate over
just a question with Dndbeyond map, is the fog of war suppose to somehow keep players from seeing the whole map? not sure how that works
Yes, fog of war prevents players from seeing the entire map.
Hey so i recently Joined the DND community, and i came with the thought of making like a martial art fighter, i found a class that is the specialized idea that i want, martial arts, Monk, but its horrible. Does anyone have like a better acceptable version of the Monk Class with overral better and mostly versitile?
You could try the monk found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/ua/ph-playtest-8
They’re playtesting a new version for the updated Player’s Handbook releasing this year.
But since it’s playtest content, you’ll probably need to run it by your DM first.
i will say, this is way better than the Monk, but i feel like his HP is somewhat low, i thought they could at least increase it to like a d10 or a 6 overral, or add more of a KI increase, like just a little, i feel like 20 Ki is rationally pretty much low and limited for his actions
The thing is the monk class is kinda mid in a lot of terms, im thinking about doing a Druid build due to how much better and versitile and deadly it is to be honest, i was trying to test out a Monk to see if hes worth a shot but i think not

Whats the best race and class for beginners
Any race will work fine
whatever interests you the most.
One of the martial classes (fighter, monk, rogue, barbarian) will be easier to learn, but a caster is doable as well
some classes are slightly more complicated than others (Wizards and Druids are more complex than fighter or rogues for example) but nothing is too hard for a beginner.
Okay thanks
Druid is the one class I would really hazard against for a new player btw
To host my first game, any free campaigns available online?
There is also the Intro to Stormwreck Isle: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1582-intro-to-stormwreck-isle-your-free-introduction-to
But that thread started in 2019, I don't know if it's up to date.
THere's also this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/free-adventure
hello, i'm leveling up my tabaxi rogue to lev.4 with D&D Beyond character builder and i wanted to see the feats possible. once in Ability Score Improvement, i chose feat but there is no list.
Do you own the Players Handbook on DnDBeyond or is the character in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled?
Additional feats beyond grappler have to be purchased or shared
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
You can also recreate feats from your own physical books using DnDBeyond's homebrew tools - anything you make from copyrighted sources may not be published (shared with the general public) but anything you make this way can be used by your own character or DnDBeyond campaigns.
i have no extra books digitaly, just basic rules book and tabaxi race.
Then there's no available official feats for you to review or add at this time.
Is there something you want your character to be better at?
We could maybe help you find a feat to help address that (you can buy feats individually on DnDBeyond).
We also have the good folks in #character-discussion if you want to get more ideas/feedback on your character.
hi, so i'm new and i joined DnD beyond and created a charater and i want play a campaign with ppl rn

Im starting my first dnd party and im dming any tips i have no clue what im doing 😭
This is a good primer: https://howtogm.guide/
thanks
this is actually good ive found some free online campaigns that ill start with while i try and perfect mine thanks
I like to suggest starting with a short adventure that you can complete in like 6 sessions, to get you warmed up
Long-form campaigns are good but not the only way to do it
ive decide to try a one shot first just to get the vibe before starting anything else
Good call!
honestly, the longer I DM the more I like short adventures that take a handful of sessions. not sure I have any longterm 1-12 or 1-20 campaigns in me anymore.
anyway, one shots or short adventures are recommended when starting out as DM for sure
my question is when rolling a dice how do i know if the player succedes or not cause i feel like its bassed on their states but i legit have no clue 😭
Have you read the Basic Rules?
Yes. As the DM, though, you set the number they need to meet or exceed. The rules offer this chart for DCs the players need to roll: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#TypicalDifficultyClasses
so i goblin would be like easy but like a massive ogre would be higher difficulty
You could absolutely math it out (if a character has +X to a certain skill, on a d20 roll they have Y% chance to succeed), but that's more work than I personally bother with. I just add a number here or there. For instance, I really like 12 as a small but notable challenge, especially for lower-level parties.
The player describes what they want to do, if there's a chance of success or failure then you can ask them to make an appropriate ability check, where you set the Difficulty Class (DC) that they need to meet or beat in order to succeed, and then depending on their roll and result, you describe what happens
ah razorwing already posted that section
DCs are for ability checks rather than enemies. There's a bunch of statblocks in the Basic Rules as well: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#MonsterStatBlocks
You might also check out how Peril in Pinebrook streamlines the D&D rules for both you and your party: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
so i as the dm pick the difficulty rating
Yep, and this is usually for something the rules don't specifically calculate. For instance, a rock falls and the player dodges. No rule for how likely a rock is to hit them, so you ask them to roll a Dexterity saving throw, but you as the DM set the difficulty as a target number.
NPCs, Monsters etc have statblocks that determin what they do and how difficult they are
when something says like (1d6 + 2) dose that mean roll an d6 and add 2 to the total
im guessing it dose mean that
yes. this does appear to be a damage roll so 1d6+2 is the damage this attack does, if it hits
thanks for this advice guys i cant wait for my first session
Making sure...
You're aware of initiative, attack rolls and AC, saving throws and DCs, yeah?
hello chat
Welcome!
is there any partys i can join?

im just looking for players to play with
You'd use #find-a-game yes
Yep. #find-a-game can show you how to find those players.
Hi 👋🏻 I'm Annie.
Hey there!
Hiii

I was interested in DnD for a while now and only just came around to learning.

The links above should get you started (if you haven't already been absorbing info). If you have specific questions, do ask away!
Ohhh critical role is one of the YouTube channels I jut started watching before joining this!!!!
Thank you!!
Okay, that's basically it
What don't you understand and have you tried looking it up in the Basic Rules?
i mostly meant the terminology and how magic works and stuff like that
i read it i just don't understand it
Well generally speaking when you find a term you don't understand, you just look it up in the rules
As for how magic works, spellcasting specifically is covered in the spellcasting section of the rules
i see, i'll have another read through
You don't need to learn everything all in one go
Start with reading the section on character creation, then using ability scores, and then combat
That covers all the core elements
ok, i'm gonna do that
So question: I can create a character based off Harry Potter and give them the elder wand and horcruxes? Would tht make tht character strong?
Those aren't things that exist in the game as-is.
So you'd have to work with your DM if you wanted them included.
not really.
characters generally start weak and grow strong over the course of a game. and you cant just bring in things from different francises
Ohh ok
But yeah, you'd typically start as a first-year, not He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
with your DMs permission, you might be able to play a character that is based on something from Harry Potter, but adapted to the game setting and rules
Can there be a game solely with other fandom characters if everyone including dm is interested?
if a DM wants to run this kind of game, sure
Yes, but it's not really something D&D is made for
Gotcha
You can draw inspiration from wherever you like, though.
Inspiration, yeah
The Wizard class would be a good fit for any Hogwarts-esque character.
Reading the rules and my HP obsessed mind kept wondering and I had to get tht out of the way before I read further lo
Wizards and sorcerers both do fit the general vibe of Harry Potter to some extend
How to spark the is Harry Potter a sorcerer or wizard argument:
its a good example of things that dont translate 1 to 1
Yup
since HP Wizards are both born with magic but have to study a lot to get good
Oooh ok
Not a topic for this channel
Oh I was just making a joke, not an actual topic lol
Just a light comment about a silly online debate that still goes on in some corners of the internet
Hi all, I want to introduce myself. I hope this is the right place. I'm a total newbie to D&D and started playing Baldur's Gate 3 recently (still in Chapter 1). I like the game very much and want to know more about the Forgotten Realms. By joining this Discord, I want to learn more and maybe play/observe a game session in the future. So the big question is, where do I start? What are good sites, tips/tricks, and best practices to start?
I personally learnt from podcasts about DnD, like: Critical Roll, DnDnD, and Dungeons and Daddies
And then read a bit of the PHB (Player Hand Book)

Yeah, there's plenty of games to watch on YouTube and Twitch.
There's even a whole D&D channel:

Ngl, Baldur's Gate 3 is actually an amazing learning guide for DnD
Teaches basics.. Like Initiative, roleplay, character creation, etc
As for the Forgotten Realms itself, they're detailed at length in Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide.
But the folks in #dnd-lore can answer any questions you have about the setting, too.

The best advice I can give on that front is to remember that D&D is about a group of people going on an adventure. So, it is your responsibility as a player to make a character that will do that. They have to want to be part of a group, and want to go on an adventure. You can’t expect your DM to force a reluctant character into action

For what?
Ask your DM which are the most frequently used languages in their campaign setting. There's no use learning goblin if there are no goblinoids in their world.
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet? Most sub-classes are selected at level 3 (some like warlock at are level 1).
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
what are the ideals and enemy etc spots on the character builde
Ideals are described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Ideals
in your sheet look under Description and under Notes
Ideals, Bonds, Flaws is what your character is like.
Allies and enemies are people/organizations you get along with and don't like, respectively.
They're the "guiding truth" of your character.
you cant see the "Notes" section in the Builder, just in the finished Sheet
i dont get it. what are bonds suppose to be. i havent played a single game yet so does it matter
bonds, ideals etc are there to help you flesh out your character.
see them as suggestions that get you to think about different aspects of their personality
It is to help flesh out your character beyond a 2-dimensional "I'm a fighter and I like to smash things!" character.
Think of yourself in real life. What are your own personal ideals (your morals/ethics), bonds (are you close to your family or religious organization?), and flaws (what are your weakness, such as gambling?)
If you've chosen a background, it probably has a few suggestions for Ideals and Bonds.
You can choose one of those, or use them as inspiration for one of your own creation.
Hey guys I have 1 question if anyone could help
Yep
I use dnd beyond and for whatever reason
I cant add Circle of death to my spell list
but I see it in the listing its from the basic rules
Is your character high enough level to cast a 6th-level spell slot?
level 7 wizasrd
And are you a class that can cast it
You need to be at least level 11 to cast a 6th-level spell
ok thank you so much that was driving me nuts
You need to make the character sheet public.
It is
Nope 404 error
I am a druid but I don't know what the rules to wild shape is
annoying. But thank you thats exactly th eanswer
It might seem a little confusing at first, but a spell's level doesn't scale the same as your character's level. You can check the Spellcasting table at the top of your class rules to discover when they gain access to each level of spell.
Yea A quick look at the level chart and I see my error
I would suggest checking in the Druid rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Druid
can i say on my back story that my character practised martial arts and taught them. Is it kind of like trying to make character op
If the DM says your PC starts at level 1, you're not that OP regardless of what your backstory says.
Backstory - where did you come from - how did you get your skills/powers - why are you out in the world
You should work with your DM on your character's backstory. Ultimately, you can say you know all martial arts in the world, but that doesn't mean you get any actual benefits in game for that. Every character starts off with the same set of options at level 1.
You can describe a punch 20 different way and they all gonna do the same damage
At level 1 your character is basically fresh out of the academy/monestary/school. They have 0 xp and are fresh eye newbies to adventuring.
I didnt go full on he has critical punch that kills with one punch. Just that he practised the art of kicks punches clinches throws grappling locks and submissions
I mean i just wanted to put that so it makes sense when i go for unarmed attacks
Then you create a character who does unarmed attacks like a monk.
That makes sense, and is good justification for picking the monk class or focusing on unarmed attacks as a fighter or something. Just remember that you probably won't be able to write something like "A wizard gave me a jewel that allows me to shoot lasers from my hands wherever I want"
Remember that a non-monk PC making unarmed strike only does 1 + Str modifier for damage.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MeleeAttacks
Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes.
- Without specific builds that use features from supplementary books
Oh thank you. I picked a fighter
Am I able to link my character sheet here?
You can link to the DnD Beyond page, yeah. If you're looking for advice, try sending it to #character-discussion !
I’m playing as a Eladrin rogue in a new level 6 campaign, any tips? I’m a thief by the way.
That sounds like fun! Are you completely new to DnD?

Ok thanks
So I end up making a character that's a deep gnome blood hunter.
I was going to use "witch cursed me with super duper mega strentgt that allowsed me to kill everyone i want wherever i want"
Not at level 1 that's not going to happen. Be more "realistic" at what your character can do based on their class and level.
But its a cursee ahh
😔
Flavour is fine but not when it changes the gameplay mechanics.
"Oh, I can kill anyone with just one punch because my backstory says I can!" will get you a big fat "No!" from DMs.
Look at what a level 1 fighter can do — not much.
That might work for a BBEG backstory at higher levels, but not a new player character
Can i say i know how to do joint locks and chokes and puches and so on so fourth
That's flavour but you're just going to be doing 1 + Str damage with unarmed strikes.
You can say that, but when it comes to combat it won't give you any sort of advantage over any other character. In order to grapple and pin an enemy, you'll need a feature in game that says you can grapple and pin an enemy.
Check out the fighter class. You pick your fighting style. Looks like a grapple technique, so here's:
Unarmed Fighting (TCE). Your unarmed strikes can deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier on a hit. If you aren't wielding any weapons or a shield when you make the attack roll, the d6 becomes a d8.
At the start of each of your turns, you can deal 1d4 bludgeoning damage to one creature grappled by you.
You may need the Tavern Brawler feat to be somewhat effective with unarmed strikes
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/customization-options#TavernBrawler
I mean like can i roleplay like a situation where a enemy attacks me and i choke him or does it have to be punch and roll dice
That's the thing - unless you get something in game, it's just punch and roll dice.
How bout if dm allows it
You can say you get him in a choke hold, but nothing in-game will happen other than punching and rolling dice
Your backstory isn't going to change the game mechanics of the game.
The DM can say anything they'd like, but DnD does have rules for a reason. You get more options as you unlock things and level up.
I mean is it possible
You can narrative describe how a fight goes, that's flavour and flavour is free.
You can use your action to grapple. It'd be a contested strength check that they attempt to break on their turn
No. Have you not read what I [posted earlier](#dnd-newcomers message)?
Yes but i mean that i say i choke him put dm counts that as a punch
A choke hold would be a grapple check.
Is a grapple check a thing in dnd
Yes.
Yes. It'd be your action to do so
What does it mean?
It's in the free Basic Rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Grappling
I recommend you read the Basic Rules (again if you have already).
So i just hold him theyre till i wish not to
They can attempt to free themselves on their turn
I mean hold him
That's what grappling does.
Please read the link I posted above.
Do i have to make a new back story on every campain
If you want to
I think it’s more fun that way
It depends on the individual DM's campaign setting.
Pretty much
What stat is most important for warlocks
Charisma
👍
Teaching point:
The class features will describe what stats a class needs, so in the future that is a good place to start
I want to make a swords man who specializes in sword and shield combat
What class would I chose to optimize that? Fighter??? Not sure
Fighter.
You have several options, but for a new player, fighter
🧹 Cleaning up. Thanks folks!
just a small question, i'm making a character right now, and some of the spells have numbers and stuff, like for example my Vicious Mockery says 2d4 and wis 15 next to it. i get that the first thing is damage, but what do the numbers mean? and what is the wisdom for?
WIS 15 is there to indicate that the target makes a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw.
dc standing for?
Difficulty class
oh ok, thank you, gonna look that up
If the total for their saving throw equals or exceeds the DC, they succeed.
so it has to be more?
Equal or greater
right
Meets it beats it
what does the 2d4 mean then?
To fail, they need a number less than the DC.
That’s the damage done by the spell if the target fails their saving throw.
but what do the numbers mean?
