Can someone PM me. I am new to DND but am eager to learn as well as a few others in my town. I’ve been tinkering with the dnd app and a few others for some understanding and have been watching a lot of YouTube.

Is there a channel for dungeon masters?
many. just grab the role from the id:customize and you will see many
I'm not trying to grab the role. I'm still learning the game but seeing it from both sides would be educational
Just go to channels and roles and choose dm channels
Thank you

Hello i am new to DnD can some one show me how to make a character ( best speaking my main language German)
Just create your fist character here, it will show you how to build a character
Hello I am new here
Hello, new to DND?
Yep
Though I have seen it a lot on yt
Dwarven dad and that one guy with the oath of throwing it back paladin
Hello, everyone. If I were playing at a board game cafe, do I have to print out my character sheet from dndbeyond or just a blank character sheet or I can just open it on my iPad?
Ask the cafe/people you’re playing with
Ipad sounds ok to me
Also I wanna ask a question
Is it possible for me to make a dragon OC I made into a DND playable character?
Of course not as powerful as a DND dragon because that would be broken.
Try dragonborn. Dragons are really not a default option.
If you want specifically a dragon, you’d have to ask your DM about that but you’d prolly not be able to play that
Thanks a lot, my guys
The idea is it functions and has similar stats to a dragonborn
But the design is like a
Nightwing from Wings of Fire
Would ask your DM
At the moment I don't have one
But in your opinion would it be ok?
It's basically just a cosmetic choice + added flight action
I'd strongly suggest using an existing and balance race and work with your group and Dungeon Master to flavor it in what's appropriate.
This is also getting into homebrew if you're making up new races
Yeah probably
This channel is more for new to D&D folks get started with core rules and game mechanics
In my opinion? Not really, unless I was making a game specifically for that kind of thing. Start with the basic options, see what you can do.
I'm going to tell you, but I strongly recommend you learn the game first before you start trying to build something that's not in the basic rules.
#homebrew . Have at it.
true.. even if you think of dnd as an opprtunity for game dev. you still gotta know the "library" you are using.
uh cleric usually. but other classes do have some abiltiy to heal. that's just the one that has the most options for it.
Cleric gets the most healing spells, but there isn’t really the capacity to be a dedicated healer. It’s just not needed nor particularly useful.
Cleric subclass life
Right true. clerics do have combat abilites. So the only reason you'd be only doing healing is because you made that a character choice
Yeah, but even then it shouldn’t be always needed
thank you guys, i want a mixed healing/magic character
And you’ll easily be outpaced by damage
Healing is magic in dnd 5e
no like damage type
Cleric is def what you want then
They get great damage spells like spirit guardians, and can heal
You could also go Druid. They get the basic healing spells, and some insane damage spells
Or divine soul sorcerer
@fleet field thank you. (i dont know anything about game)
It’s a sorcerer with the cleric spells as well
Maybe check out the basic rules. They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
I have an OwlBearRodeo Question, So on my players view how can I hide the toolbar and "Players" tab on the top left?

from what I gather, they're 'rankings' of physical/mental character traits. Like, how easily you can pick things up, how physically strong you are, your fortitude, etc etc
No I've seen it that way
i sit corrected
oh no

#frequently-asked-questions has the list of commands.
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB

Where can I get maps of phaladin location quests?
@wild onyx thought there was specific to the ability stats
Such as woodland manse or loggers camp?
I am unsure
If there are official maps, they should be in the adventure
What adventure? I am still not familiar with these
Well, there's https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores or the Handbooker Helper videos that I know of.
I only bought the essential kit😅
It seemed like you were asking about Phandolin, which is a location in an official adventure
Yeah but I seek the quest locations
If there are official maps, they should be in the kit. Otherwise, try the Internet I guess
To see if anyone has made something free.
Or just draw your own
I only got the sword coast map and the phaladin village map.
Are there smaller maps in the booklet where it describes the quests?
Yeah
It doesn't come with full size maps for everything
going out on a limb here.. but I am pretty sure almost all adventure modules have at least SOME maps. idk.
Most books/modules expect you to take their map images and draw them out/recreate them for your players
Especially if you bought a physical copy
Oh ok, is it best to draw it out traditionally or digitally? If digitally where can I start? Are there any websites where I can make maps?
Are you playing online or in person?
In person, I want to print out the maps
In person, I'd usually just get some large grid paper or one of those reusable maps and draw them out myself. Printing with full size squares tends to get really big really fast
And there are some websites/software where you can make maps but which is best tends to depend on your budget. Dungeonscrawl is free I think, or you can just Google it to see if other people have made free maps you like.
#dnd-maps has some useful links and reosurces in the pinned messages for helping with making maps
I'll go check Dungeonscrawl, thank you for helping me Ratatoskr!
Also, for whoever wanted the abilities score info, I think it's ?tag new abilities
teaching the mods
Copying from other mods who've used it in the past 😉
Though I do think it would be helpful if all the new tags were listed in the #frequently-asked-questions channel, since it seems like there's a bunch of extra options
Or a pinned post here if that's easier
Any recommended pre-made adventures for 2 players + 1 dm—all beginners? I have the Lost Mine of Phandelver starter set but didn’t realize the adventure is made for 4–5 players. Perhaps I should just pick up the latest starter set (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle), which is still made for 4–5 but does mention being playable with 1–2 players as well. Or any tips on how to scale the LMoP adventure for a lower player count?
You could give each player a sidekick: https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/UA_Sidekicks.pdf
Maybe even start with Peril in Pinebrook - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
And then move them into https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1582-intro-to-stormwreck-isle-your-free-introduction-to
Ah, that’s a nice solution! Thanks for the tip.
I’d like to play online with my adult son (who lives in another city) and whoever else I could recruit. Is D&D beyond my best bet?
Discord is your best bet - all you need is access to your D&D books, your players have their sheets (physical or digital), hook up Avra Discord bot on your Discord server for dice rolling, and you can have a game anywhere.
I like DnDBeyond for the digital access but it's just a tool
Find what works best for you and your group and use that.
If you want to show maps it gets a bit more involved but yeah discord for chat is your best bet.
DDB has maps now, but not sure how good that is yet, Owlbear rodeo is free and fairly simple to use to show a basic map
LMOP also has its own included rules for sidekicks. No, it doesn’t.
If you give each player their own sidekick, you’d be able to play it as-is.
Does it? You may be thinking of the Essentials Kit?
@inland jasper The post above is a handy overview of playing online.
Perfect. Just what I needed.
I noticed I spend a lot of time of my life looking at screens, for the sake of not reinforcing addictions, I should try to do more stuff in person.
My main friend group is in college and in a different city 40 minutes away so scheduling is hard.
What are some good ways to find some irl tabletop games for me to join
You can try Warhorn, Meetup or check the websites of game stores near you
I noticed there are a few near me, but the game stores near me are more retail exclusive, not so focused on tabletop to trading card games tables.
There is a store about 25 minutes from me which most likely is the sort you mean, given the whole tabletop focus. I suppose I could call other stores near me and see if they have tabeltop games one could join
Yeah, you can always call around. Some stores may have games that they don't list on their websites.
Though people have played games anywhere from bars to local libraries too
Which is why checking Meetup or Warhorn for local game postings can be helpful too
Cool cool, I heard horror stories from this sorta thing but I’m optimistic and should know when to leave
You might have to try a few to find a game that works for you, but as long as you don't stick around with a group that doesn't mesh, you should be fine
If You’re UK based geek retreats are nice places to play
Hey does anyone know if there's a one piece dnd campaign open ?
Thanks
Yall I have a almost stupid question, does a barbarians rage last until the end of conflict or just a few turns
It says how long it lasts in the ability. It's a minute max but it can end early for several reasons
Oh alright sick
1 minute or 10 rounds of combat.
I'm making a first character what sources do i use?
That woud be a question for your DM; they decide what sources are allowed
I suggest getting on D&D Beyond and putting together a level one character with the basic stuff to see how it goes. Use the point buy method for ability scores and feel free to share and discuss it here in #character-discussion .
thank you

Do i need to pay in order to play dnd?
Not for the base game
The free Basic Rules has everything you need to get started.
If you find a table the DM may share their (physical or digital) books with you.
And then if you want more options, yes you can buy additional books and material
Then how can i enjoy the other version (s)?
Think of it like DLC for a video game.
Oh how can i play the base game?
Think of the free Basic Rules as a video game playable demo.
Like already said, you’d need to either borrow or buy the books for more content

Dont i need a dice tho?
Online dice rollers work
Yes. You can either buy physical dice or get dice roller apps.
Google has multiple forms of dice rolling or number generators
D&D is ultimately just you and your friends telling a story together. You can do that anywhere you like.
Aight thanks
Can i play it only with 2 people or i need more?
Like me and another person
D&D is generally based around 1 DM and 4-6 players
Bruh
You can, though the typical group is around 4-6 people.
Dang
Hi hi
If you want to play one-on-one, though, this site has some good advice:
https://dndduet.com/
Most adventures are based around 3 to 5 PCs. One PC isn't going to survive very long in an adventure.
Not without lots of work on the DMs part to rebalance things around only having one player character playing
But it's possible.

so i read the rules but i dont get how to start a game :/
Find people to play with and talk to them
wanna play?
As the large informational message above you says, #find-a-game is the channel for that
ye but its difficult :(((
so you wanna play?
If I did i would’ve agreed when you first asked
DnD is not like an MMO where you will drop into a game, it can take a while to find one and then there is some prep work
^
Massively Multiplayer Online
Stuff like World of Warcraft
Go to places where people play DND and ask around
I.e #find-a-game
goto #find-a-game and follow the instructions there
Then try again
Hi there. So if you go into the #looking-for-players section, you can see everyone's adverts. Find one that looks right for you, read it twice, and if it still looks good post your interest in their thread. Alternatively you can try offsite like on Roll20, see if you can find anything that would suit you there.
It's not about being smart or stupid, it's about being patient. Sometimes you just have to accept that these things take time.
The other idea is to put yourself out there. Using the looking for DM command in #find-a-game lets you put a personal advert up where you can tell people what kind of experience you have, your availability and what sort of game you're looking for.
getting game can take patience and there are lots of places on the internet where people come together to play and to recruit players, so if you dont find anyone here, maybe try one of the communities in #looking-for-community or go to reddit /lfg or look for games on roll20.net etc etc
I've run a couple of games yesterday and today just aimed at new players - there are options out there. Good luck!
ty :)
Hello all! Sorta new to dnd and joined for info on how to DM for my family. Happy adventuring!

This might help: #dnd-newcomers message
that also works, thank you Mr Smith
There is no general timeframe - you could find a game within minutes to it could take many months to find a game.
Good afternoon. i am completely new to the game and have just created a basic character through DnD beyond. i would like to learn how to play

Welcome! There’s some handy links above to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
i would like to join a campaign how must i do so?
(getting some good mileage out of that one today)
lol
Since dnd has a huge lack in dms (about 10 players per one dm) it will take time,a lot of time.
Ultimately the time it takes depends on who’s looking and what they’re looking for.
You can reduce that time by being persistent and diligent, and by casting a wide net.
The more specific your needs, the longer it might take.
Exactly
But I’d generally recommend a proactive approach, rather than a passive one.
I.E. Reach out to DMs directly rather than waiting for them to reach out to you.
Yup,as a DM,its always annoying when players just expect you to do everything to make em come into a game
Take initiative. Share ideas.
it might seem hurtfull, but as a player, you are 100% replaceable, you need to do the extra mile,or ya won't get taken
And even if it takes a while just to find a game, it might take even longer to find the right game for you.
So having those conversations before the game — sharing your ideas and your expectations — is crucial.
The better you can communicate your expectations up front, the better you can avoid any unpleasant surprises down the road.
This is a good guide, but you’ll still need to read the Basic Rules: https://howtogm.guide
Is there someone who can help me rq, i would like to submit a looking for players post but i don’t know where or how, I’m not really understanding the #find-a-game instructions.
Hey everybody, I am completely new to dnd. Me and a view friends (about 4-5 people who are also new to dnd) want to start playing and I was chosen for the dm. Has anyone a view links which are helpfull for:

how to play in general

@runic glade congrats
Just click where it says </looking-for players:1074431147045568613>.
Or start typing /looking-for and select it from the list of suggestions.
Then send the message either way.
ok, thank you so much!
Yep. It’s why I recommend players to start by playing one shots.
In doing so, you get opportunities to learn what play and DM styles you are compatible with.
Along with developing a better understanding of which pillars of dnd you’ll gravitate to.
Role play, exploration, and combat.
How do I make a post in looking for a dm?
In any channel, type /looking and a list of prompts will pop up. Click the appropriate one and hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post it in the channel you chose.

@frank gull read above
Is creating a character free or?
You'll find bg3 uses same rule set as the tabletop
Yes
We be here
hello!
Hi
BG3 actually takes some creative liberties with the rules so not everything is exactly the same as BG3.
The premise is I believe the same
Mechanically as well
Im back. I finished the tutorial.
Or the quick adventure rather. I don't know why but i felt this rush of excitement with each new roll and see the outcome of it. It's really fun.
May i ask a dumb question? I don't know which class to choose.
I apologize for this, i might need help cause i never created a character before.
Well, if you want a beginner friendly class go for fighter. But do you have any idea of what you want your character's fighting style to be?
My brain takes some time to comprehend certain things so i apologize in advance.
But i really enjoy like how in bg3 for like a ranger you could use like animals to help you.
Ranger or druid might be the best options for you then. Ranger if you want to focus on weapons or archery. However choose druid if you want to focus on magic as well as healing if you want to.
Druids have a lot of nature themed spells so you'll get several ways to get animals and plants to help you.
Question, if i pick ranger can i use like animals to help me. Like in bg3.
I want to be beast master ranger. Im so sorry.
Okay. That's fine.
Let me just say that unfortunately the Beast Master subclass is behind a paywall.
In DnD Beyond at least.
rangers also have spells like *animal friendship, beast bond, speak with animals, *and animal friendship, which you can use to interact magically with animals you come across
Okay.
Druids have a lot more crazy nature themed spells though. But it's a harder class to master.
its very hard to even play to start with
wildshape can be a trap in combat, even when used well you need to learn a whole other side of the game and manage a lot more, plus youre a full caster
it probably has you interacting with the most parts of the game of any class
So, about my race. I would probably like to have maximize my proficiency with like bows.
Any race can use bows.
class defines weapon proficiency mainly
Im so sorry
no need to apologise
So it doesn't matter what race i pick essentially.
For example, an orc might be better fit to be a fighter or barbarian but doesn't mean that they can't be capable wizards.
Right.
You may get some racial traits that may be better synergized with certain classes.
Just pick what sounds fun to you.
Okay. Do half elfs get the same racial traits as full elves?
no
Half-elves are different from elves.
At first it sounded dumb when i was rereading it.
Question, can a half elf be a mixture of anything with an elf or is it regulated between certain species?
Half-elves tend to be of an union between elves and humans.
I mean they're supposed to be hybrids between human and elf however you could always ask your DM to make an exception.
I would recommend using Custom Lineage if you want something else.
I have no dm.
Then I recommend you stick with what's in the book for now.
I was trying to tell you that you should ask your DM when you eventually find one.
I do appreciate the help that you guys are giving.
Unlike most games the DM make the rules not the creators of the game.
The rules and lore you find in the books are often seen as suggestions for a lot of of Dungeon Masters.
i mean if the dm isnt using at least the basics of the rules it isnt really dnd anymore
Well, you know what I was saying.
A new player may not, hence the clarification.
So is it okay if i still create a character even without a dm?
Yes, for practice.
Cause Im actually enjoying the process even though i have no clue what im doing.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I haven't. Im on the create your first character but i should probably read that first.
I would recommend you do because you're essentially trying to put a car together without knowing what the individual parts do.
Like someone posted a link to do like a quick adventure which i did and then went into creating a character but i will read the basic rules.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Will do. Again my apologies.
Keep in mind that certain DMs might have a very specific plot in mind. You might find a cool DM that is trying to do a pirate themed game so obviously an archaeologist character will not work. Some DMs might even ban certain races or classes.
Wait they can actually do that. I'm surprised.
Some DMs even like to alter the lore of creatures. For example, I've met a DM that made goblins scavengers and traders instead of nasty marauders. Personally I'm not too fond of that but I've noticed that a lot of DMs like to do that.
Okay i read through the first four chapters.
That is tricky especially for a newb like myself. Like you know of goblins as being one thing and then you get to a game and it's not what you thought of and it confuses you.
But i would also assume the players when they first begin that like hey this is what this is like goblins are this. So you're not caught off guard. Or at least i would hope they tell you.
There are different types of DMs and players. There are people that like to implement their own rules and lore in their games. There are people who like to be silly and people who like to do things more seriously. You just need to look around and find the best group for you.
Absolutely.
Okay so i read through the first 4 chapters and i think i have a clear view of what i want for my character.
Hell, there are even people like me who like to write instead of talk.
I like writing more than talking cause i have a speech problem and that terrifies me to talk. Cause i know I'll eventually stutter.
Ppb (pay-by-post) games might be something you'd enjoy then. The only downside of pbp games is that they move very slowly.
Ill have to look into that.
So, i figured out what race and class i want to be.
Like im almost using myself as like inspiration.
Now that I fully thought about it. I envision my character as a ranger who likes animals more than people. Due to the reasoning of i have social anxiety when I talk to people cause of my speech impediment problem. Like i'm fearful of what would happen if i began to stutter infront of them. So i figured my character usually spends their time around animals because they're afraid of the reaction of people so they choose to tend to animals.
Hey man,saw you seemed really invested,if ya want,I have a place in my full newbie campaign if you're interested
Ill help ya do your character sheet and everything
That's interesting. I can imagine your character having a low Charisma score.
Is talking a requirement. Which sounds dumb now asking.
Yes it is
As it is a vc game, not a text based one
I have social anxiety even now.
I very much appreciate the offer but i must decline. Im so sorry.
But if thats not for you, there are plenty of text based dnd campaigns out there
Ah kk
Well if we can do anything to accomodate that, let me know
We're pretty accepting people
Thank you for reaching out cause that's very generous of you.
It sounds dumb creating a dnd character for when you have a fear of public speaking or playing in a world.
Again,play by post exists
I know.
Some dnd games are just basically a chat room
But yeah exept that, most dnd games are either in person or in VC
Yeah
But Im still very excited to actually create a character.
To just even have one for myself even and create a backstory. It's still fun and a thrill.
maybe go to #character-discussion for all of that
Is there some kind of app to help me I am new to dnd
Dnd is very complicated for me

Welcome
anyone willing to teach me how to play. its my first time and ive never played before. i have a general understanding of what the game is, but would love to just dive in with someone or a few people to see how its actually ran, structured, and played.

@teal meteor Check out the information above
How do Europeans usually do with speeds and such?
Just divide feet by 3 for meters, or something else?
And pounds divided by 2 to kg?
We just use feet
Ah, k.
As most stuff is grid based and grids are 5ft it just easier to keep it the same
Yeah true.
Haven't looked at the grid system yet.
I kinda like that this fantasy world uses this weird measuring system ^^
feels fitting
but yeah pounds can be easily divided by 2
and I mostly stick to feet and miles and only occasionally convert stuff in my head if I need to imagine distances
Ah this is where I go
Uhh, I'm just getting back into D&D after a 2 year hiatus
And I'm rusty as hell cuz, well for one, 2 year break, and 2, I was literally getting into it
So uhhh, any advice on getting back in?
Are you looking for advice on character creation or how to get into a game or something else?
When initiative is rolled, is it rolled for the start of every round of combat, or does the order stand throughout the whole combat?
the standard rule is that is rolled once for the entire combat
(there is a variant rule for new initiative every round in the Dungeon Master's Guide, but thats not used very often, and for good reason imo. Rolling initiative every round is a huge time sink)
Depends on how you track it, but I can see it slowing the pace. Roll20 and I think Owlbear have the facility to just make a list in order when initiative is rolled.
I have a question about the spell “lay on hands” I can’t really find the page for it but how much hp would that pool of ho have, or is that for the dm too decide?
It’s not a spell it’s a paladin ability
you can restore a total number of hit points equal to your paladin level × 5.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/paladin#LayonHands-261
Your blessed touch can heal wounds. You have a pool of healing power that replenishes when you take a long rest. With that pool, you can restore a total number of hit points equal to your paladin level × 5.
So if I'm a level 3 paladin I'll be able to heal 15 total hit points?
3 x 5 is 15, yep
you have 15 points of Lay on Hands healing power
As an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore a number of hit points to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in your pool.
Alternatively, you can expend 5 hit points from your pool of healing to cure the target of one disease or neutralize one poison affecting it. You can cure multiple diseases and neutralize multiple poisons with a single use of Lay on Hands, expending hit points separately for each one.
This feature has no effect on undead and constructs.
what are the reccomended stats for a ranger?
Dexterity, Wisdom, then Constitution
Dex is good for finesse weapons and ranged weapons and AC
Wisdom is good for ranger spells and in general wisdom checks
Ah so i do need dex
Tysm
How do I make a post in looking for dm?
instructions are in #find-a-game
Thank you🙏🏾
Hey guys! I'm very new to dnd and it's so much Information at once.. can anyone tell me the best way to learn how to play the game? I've never seen a game that dives THIS deep

Take your time to learn to rules but if you find a good DM they can help you to learn the rules as you play
And remember you don't need to learn all the rules before playing.
Yeah you don't need to memorize everything, all you need is the knowledge that the rules exist and where to find those rules
At its most basic dnd is just asking the DM if you can do something they will ask you to roll if needed
For example, knowing about fall damage, mounted combat, reactions, the BA spell rule, knowing where to find them
Hi
Most click into place as you play- it's a bit like playing a boardgame. You look through the rules once to have an idea of how things are meant to work overall, then you learn through play.
The above resources can help you out- have a try at making a practice PC (player character) by yourself if you like, as that's something you can do by yourself while looking for a game. It's a bit tricky at first, but following the step by step rules and trying not to over complicate it (and asking questions here when stuck) can really help. once you've made one PC, you basically know how to make any.
As for combat, you can look over some of the basic rules, but they'll mostly click in as you play. the rest you learn as you play- and not an issue if you or the DM get a rule wrong so long as it feels kinda right and you're having fun.
Hi
Ah good to know thanks, but just another question.. for example the zombie in dnd has 22 hit points and next to it stands (3D8+9) i don't understand? Like you roll the 8 dice 3 times and the total is +9 but what then? Or in actions, chop: Melee attack: +3 to hit, ok but with what dice am I rolling?
3d8 + 9 is average 22
I've been reading some books and the players handbook, is it advisable I try and find a bunch of peeps who are also learning and a DM who can make us suffer? 😂
you can roll 3d8+9 and that's their HP, or just do a quick easy 22.
If ya want,im doing a dnd newbie only game every sunday
Ahhhhhh okayyyyy
tomorrow?
when is that from now?
and it's Slam, not chop
+3 to hit is for their attack roll (same as any other attack, d20 + total attack bonus, in this case the zombie's +1 strength and +2 proficiency)
then it says it does 4 (1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage
Same as before, it does 1d6+1 damage, which is average 4

Also, game organization can go in direct messages or a thread in #750812887697588356 / #looking-for-players (made via instructions from #find-a-game )
Whats "drats"?
like saying darn
yes that!
Ok, good to know. then how do i know how much HP the character I play has?
Best to look though the basic rules at this point
Based on your class levels and constitution modifier
Otherwise we're trying to drip feed you information out of order.
They'll tell you your HP.
I never played DnD in my life but grew up with WoW and other fantasy style games. After playing baldur gates 3 I have an itch to make it a hobby
I did but just had some questions that remained afterwards
Perfect, thanks.

BG3 is a pretty great entry point into Table top D&D. 5e and BG3 are essentially the same rules, so you can remake a character you played in BG3 in 5e easily. Some rules are different though, as they were changed to make it easier to play in a digital platform, so keep an eye out for those. Might trip you up a few times at the start, but overall if you've played BG3 you'll be pretty familiar with most 5e terms and rules now.
such as shoving and jumping being almost entirely and fundamentally different
but stuff like attack rolls versus AC, saving throws versus DC, spell slots, remain the same
Hi! Does anyone know what the difference between a bond and an ally is?
They're completely different things
A bond is something that ties you to a place, a community, a person, or a way of life. It's a commitment, oath, or tenet
An ally is someone you're working with in pursuit of a goal
ive never played dnd and I want to get into it but have zero experience, whats the best why to learn?

Heya! Not really sure what channel this is meant to go into, but i need help ;-;. I'm new to dnd and made the unfortunate decision of picking a druid Q^Q - with no prior knowledge on building characters, i made a sort of empty feeling character. To rectify this i wrote a whole doc going into her backstory and extras (i know overcompensation much). After playing two sessions with her, i realize that as a new player I want to loot and kill stuff - However, this campaign is a sort of dungeon situation where we have versed animals. This campaign will make sure we interact with them too... I got a little trigger happy and wanted to extract information from the spider. By way of ... torture. It was a giant mistake on my part but she had just died to some of the spiders, so it was sort of vengeful? I'm just so lost on the whole druid way, while yes I could claim will of the wild - what ever happens happens, and just try to not go crazy again i just feel so scrambled. pls help
Check out the bot post above for some great resources to get you started!
Calm
;-;
My apologies, but I’m not entirely sure what it is your asking for help with. It sounds like you aren’t having fun with your character, right? Can you put your finger on what specifically it is you aren’t having fun with? A lot of what you listed above is a little vague
Ill dm ya so you can explain it in mroe details
My apologies, im not even sure myself. I LOVE my character, i just feel like im messing her up - especially how i should play her seeing as shes a druid. With the incoming arc of a rat king and the past spider incident im just not confident at all. Im probably just overreacting, embarrassed by the dms raised brow
🥲 What do i do to make sure it doesnt happen again - any tips for playing a druid and following the vague 'balance the forest' vibe as a new player?
Thanks ^^
Prob more #character-discussion but what sort of Druid are you?
I went for a simple druid of the forest, thought that would be the easiest to understand and went with my characters overall aesthetic
Even a Druid can kill things, there is a balance to nature and it can be cruel sometimes
see thats my idea - if someone burns the forest= bad, a thunderstorm burns it = good and balanced
Just keep playing your character and you’ll understand them more but characters like really people can change over time through actions and experiences
Did you all talk prior to playing about expectations for behavior?
mmm not really - just the overall rule dont be a jerk? - it was a come one come all type of game. Our dm wasnt strict about characters. i think he was just excited to play this old campaign again haha
I stand a lot on session zero, which is a pre-game discussion about expectations as much as logistics. If that didn’t happen at the start, it can happen at any time among the members of the table.
I don’t know if the group knows you’re new (as I’m guessing since you’re posting in this channel), but if not, you might talk at least with the DM about your concerns if you’re overstepping. For instance, maybe the expectation is that you’re a band of heroes so torture was a bridge too far. Maybe the DM is worried about murderhobo tendencies (that is, killing everything without regard for the consequences to the narrative). The way to solve many problems in D&D is how you solve most problems among people: communication.
It’s not clear if you’re worried about playing your character faithfully or if your in-character actions bothered the people at the table, but you can clarify this by talking to your fellow players, which includes the DM.
would anyone be down to rrun me through character creation?
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
If you haven't read it yet, the first few chapters of the Basic Rules all cover character creation.
not much, just trying to figure out what would be best for point allocation for a new party
i have little to no experience with dnd since my group just stopped getting on mid quest and then just started new ones with different groups while i was gone
You mean you're using point buy for ability scores, and you're not sure how each player should allocate their points?
Ouch,it do be like that sometimes
Well if you want,I have a couple of spots for my sunday campaign
I couldn't quite figure it out from the basic rules, maybe I missed that paragraph.
But how does movement play into combat?
Like, I get that if someone is arguing in the face of you, it takes a single action to just strike them, for example.
But let's say the BBEG is standing 15 feet away, is it still a single action to hit them with some melee ability, or does RAW require two actions to move up and then strike them?
Id gladly help ya make your character sheet
that would be dope
Moving is a separate action, not an actual action
You have 30ft of movement you can use anyway you want
Moving isn't technically an "action" at all, at least not by the game definition.
They do not require an action
Ill dm ya
You get one action on your turn, and you can move a distance up to your speed.
Most characters have a walking speed of 30 ft., which means you can move up to 30 ft. on your turn.
Ah, so you got movement aside from action.
Can it be either before, during, or after an ordinary action?
The interaction is the Dash action giving you extra movement.
And it can be before or after yes
Before or after (or some of both).
You can use it however you want, you can move, attack, move again if you wish
When you're using extra attack, it can even go between attacks
Neat!
Thanks!
I'd recommend reading through this section.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BreakingUpYourMove
You've got
Movement
Action
Object Interaction (as part of action or movement- such as open door, pull lever, draw weapon, sheathe weapon)
Bonus Action (discrete resource, specifically only if you have something to use as a bonus action)
(Yes there's action and bonus action, no they're not interchangeable, think of them more like different shapes - they are different resources outright)
I think the only reason I fully started to understand DND was because of bg3 lmao
So for object interaction, can it kinda be slotted into either movement or action, whilst having the other one left for its ordinary use?
I'm new to the rules, so take this with a grain of salt but I'm pretty sure movement is it's own thing, it isn't really an "action" and can only be changed by different effects like vines you can get stuck in or whatever, and most all actions in combat are used by the main action. I don't really know how to explain bonus actions though
Bonus action can only be used with some spells and abilities
Like misty step
Does that mean I got everything else right?
Ah I think I get it. Found the chapter now.
Item use seemed to be normal action only, yeah.
Assuming we'd get one of those square mates to better visualize stuff, how is diagonal movement usually applied?
Or for that matter, odd angles outside 0, 90 and 45 degrees
Like, when moving something like the shape of a chess horse movement, let's say
Either:
every second diagonal tile costs two, or
Ignore it. One square = 5'.
Depends on the DM, but the two most common ways to count diagonal movement when using a grid in my experience are
1: Diagonal squares count the same as any other movement, so it's 5ft to move diagonally as it would be any square
2: Every 2nd diagonal square moved counts as 10 ft, which roughly averages out to a correct distance (This is what I personally use)
Yeah, I do it the lazy way. I figure, it's turn based combat, it's an abstraction anyway, it's the same rule for PCs and the opposition and it's not going to break anything.
Also some VTT's like roll20 just have rulers for stuff like that, which has come in handy 😎
Hi guys I'm completely new to dnd and I was wondering how to get started
Welcome! There’s some handy links here to get you going:

But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
When seeing the basic rules are free, I kinda get the "First time it's free, then it'll cost ya, mwehehe!" vibe 😂
But TBH, i kinda get why people get so into just dice collecting of all stuff.
They can be so darn fancy it's insane.
Hey uhm, this might be kinda dumb of me to ask, but like.. can someone explain the commands when searching for a game or a group game to join? I already read the rules and the help guide, but my brain isn't exactly able to understand. Where and what can I type to join like a group dm game?
Read the insturctions in #find-a-game. The prompt is at the bottom of #find-a-game as well.
In any channel, type /looking and a list of prompts will pop up. Click the appropriate one and hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post it in the channel you chose.
Hey guys, I’m new to D&D, and my friend is trying to create a game, I got really exited for it until I saw the guide book. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to read it all but I am really exited for playing with my friends. One of them got the time to put one of my ideas to work, I gave them my character idea (which is a Nord that has the capability of creating ice using his hands and melee fights. He then send me this text with status and everything, is this a great build? Race: Nord (Human variant with Nordic heritage)
• Ability Score Increase: +2 Strength, +1 Constitution
• Nordic Heritage: Proficiency in Athletics, resistance to cold damage
Class: Monk (Way of the Four Elements)
• Monastic Tradition: Choose the Way of the Four Elements for elemental manipulation.
• Elemental Disciplines: Select disciplines that focus on ice powers, such as “Fist of Unbroken Air” for a freezing punch.
Stats (using standard array):
• Strength: 14
• Dexterity: 14
• Constitution: 15
• Intelligence: 10
• Wisdom: 14
• Charisma: 10
Background: Outlander
• Feature: Wanderer (proficiency in Survival
You should check in with #character-discussion!
Ok!
can someone explain to me how reactions work? like if my dm says something attacked me do I immeditaly say I want to use a reaction spell or something like that or do I wait for my next turn?
That's what I do but I think it depends on the dm
a reaction is always triggered by somethign and this trigger is described in the feature or spell
ok thanks
take the shield spell which says
1 reaction, which you take when you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell
so when you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell you may choose to say that you use your reaction to cast the shield spell
ok thanks, I was looking at the hellish rebuke spell and it said reaction but now i get it
1 reaction, which you take in response to being damaged by a creature within 60 feet of you that you can see
1.something happens that can trigger a possible reaction from you.
2. your reaction happens immediately. normally, after the triggering effect is completed, but it can even interrupt the triggering effect if the ability says so (example: Shield)
Also important to note is that once you take a reaction, you can’t take another one until the start of your next turn.
Hello everyone! I just joined the server and was curious how easy it’d be to get a dungeon master for a bunch of newbies. And I mean real new. We know very little to nothing on dnd so we need a guide to help us even make Character sheets😅

I’d be happy to help with character sheets too but I already have a few to many campaigns sry

Hello Everyone, I got into D&D about a year ago but have only played a couple of sessions. Any tips to playing a Warlock? (In general?)
This is just a good habit in general; study up on your class features before each session so you know how they work
Eldritch blast is your main tool. Mainly take big concentration spells, so you can drop one of those at the start of combat, then spam eldritch blast the rest of the time
You want the repelling blast and agonising blast infusions ASAP
Don’t be afraid to push your party to take short rests
Ok thanks everyone!
Also asking for a friend, any tips to playing a Barbarian? (as before, in general?)
Rage whenever you think a combat will be hard
Apart from that, walk in and whack things really good
big piece of metal and go in the general direction of the enemy is the usual gameplan
K thanks!
Do I have to read to get a good grasp on D&D or are there alternatives that work?
it is recommended though there are also youtube videos like the handbooker helper series that can be beneficial to study

You generally do need to read
You may be able to get the basics from a video, but you won’t be able to find a video going over every class, race, and feat
... I feel like there would be someone dedicated enough to cover that... but who knows
You won’t be able to find information on everything in videos
You’ll need to read your spells and features
I think you can get a good whack of it from videos
There are hundreds of spells, like a hundred feats, 50 something races, and 13 classes each with like 8 subclasses on average
Someone won’t have gone over all of that
If you were committed to not reading, Someone somewhere has probably done a video on it
You can understand the basic structure, but you’ll have to read your specific features
They only wanted a good grasp of D&D.
I’m just saying that to actually play it you’ll have to read
You can definitely get that from videos, specifics you may have to crack a book but even then there is probably a video going over the classes.
id consider reading a necessary skill
But all the subclasses and spells?
Hello people, I recently joined because I've been interested for a while now in D&D and never knew where to start
I've been reading the messages above so I'll start there, but I want to ask: is it possible to be a spectator in someone else's game to learn from them? No chatting nor anything, just watching, is that possible?
Pick an esoteric spell, one hardly anyone uses
or subclass
Like, there's probably a video of one subclass, but not all of them at once
There are liveplay streams and videos on YouTube and twitch, but I think most groups won’t really like having some rando just sitting in the background and listening to everything
Im curious if I can find it, I am not saying reading isnt helpful. I am just curious if it can be done.
hello, i just joined by searching up dnd on discord cuz ive never played before and idk how to start
Sure. Subclass: arcane archer or purple dragon knight, or maybe battlerager
however those oen shot videos would probably be compiled into playlists with each other which could inevitably have most of if not everything
Thanks 👍 do you recommend any channel in particular (either from Twitch or Youtube)?
Spell: compulsion
Dungeon dudes have a liveplay I’ve heard good things abt, it’s called dungeons of drakkenheim
Thank you
Chance's D&D spellbook has all of them, from a quick google that is
Huh. Neat
And zaktact has this one.
I dont think reading is the hurdle it needs to be for newer players, if you can read obviously do so. but if there are accessibility issues there are options.
Dungeon dudes do have videos covering most of the subclasses

i have almost no experience with this game, how do i get started?
Hi guys
How do I know what modifier to hit I add to a “melee spell attack”
For inflict wounds
You use your spell attack modifier.
As OMYAC said, your spell attack modifier.
What is your class and level?
ah, so 3rd level character and you have Inflict Wounds from cleric, and 18 wisdom
you use your Wisdom modifier for Cleric spells (So +4) and you add your proficiency bonus (+2, as a 3rd level character)
+6 total
so do i add +6 to all my cleric spells to hit?
(Remember you only roll exactly what the spell says, so it does a flat 3d8 damage on a hit, not + mod like weapons get to do)
for spell attack rolls for cleric spells, yes
and your Cleric Spell Save DC is 14 (8+2+4)
i may misremember
so lets say intitative goes 1. me 2. my teamate 3. a goblin
and lets say my teamate is downed right so rolling death saves
and i cast healing word on them
if you heal them they have HP and can take turn as normal
they don't auto-stand up, they'll have to do that manually cuz they're still on the ground lol
but they still get their aaction?
but yeah even if they roll a 20 on their death save and get 1hp, they'd have their turn
okay
of course they would, they're not unconscious
and then
when someone goes down right
they roll a d20 on each of their turns with 1-9 fail and 10-20 success? and if they get 3 success they become consicious and 3 fails perma death?
not perma death but they do die
If you start your turn at 0 hit points and unstable, you make a Death saving throw, 1-9 is fail, 10-20 is success
a 1 is two fails, a 20 is immediately regain 1 hit point.
Since it happens at the start of your turn, and you might regain 1 hit point...
You have 1 hit point and your turn's not over. You have your turn, albeit at 1 hp and starting prone.
I thought it was 1-10 was fail 11-20 was success? Or am i mistaken
Roll a d20. If the roll is 10 or higher, you succeed.
^ That is quoted from the link posted above, FYI.
tthanks guys 😄
i have too many d20s for someone whos barely played dnd
So baldur’s gate 3 compared to real DnD how similar are they? If any I should say.
if dnd was automated

The broad strokes are the same, but it differs in some of the finer details.
Okay building a character, for advanced type, what’s the difference or preference between milestone or xp progression?
XP works like you'd expect from a video game.
Get enough XP and you level up.
Milestone has you level up when you complete certain in-game accomplishments, based on the story. ("You defeated the boss. Everybody level up.")
Your DM will let you know which to use.
Okay so right off the back I’ll need at least two characters? One has milestone the other xp just in case?
Or I can switch it anytime?
Nah you can change what you have to set to depending on what the dm wants
Yeah
If you don't have a DM yet, I'd just leave everything on that page at its default.
Same, bought a player book, but I'm still messing around with things.
A group of other DnD babies that is don’t wanna be the only noob lol
Hey

Will do sir. 🫡
I only played a few times do I still count as a noob
I've played 0 times lol
Ehh youre at the age you can walk
I really don’t know much
ive been in a couple one shots and been listening to a couple podcasts for a while but playing is so much more different im definitely still a noob
I know nothing lol. Other than what BG3 has taught me.
I have only made a character but that was with the help of a app
I played with a group years ago. But it’s been like five years and I wanna get back into it. I’d love to work up to DMing but should probably start with a campaign first.

bg3 is such a good tool for learning how combat and class mechanics work especially if you look into doing specific builds
I did have a character on dnd beyond for a sec then it disappeared on me.
My friend is bringing her girlfriend to one of our games to see if she would enjoy it what are some ways I could try to I guess help give her a taste of it all?
I've watched people play for years and such, so I understand a bit, but I've never played myself.
Reminder that BG3 is not D&D. It's based on D&D but they've changed the rules to fit their needs for the video game.
Only thing I know how to do is create items
You can’t create items in dnd
pretty sure they mean homebrew?
of course i meant the general grasp of things
it is I think
Homebrew is a part of dnd
he didn't specify IN DnD though?
It’s not something defined in the rules
Dosent have to be
So?
Dnd isn’t all just rules
DND is about fun right ?
It’s a game about imagination and thinking of everything
Home brew is a major part of my dnd experience as a dm
its not 'technically' in dnd, but it can be because you can make it whatever you want
I love creating new items creatures and weapons for my players to enjoy
That power of Imagination eh, ILL WILL BE A GOD! Muwhahaha
Agree. But it’s definitely good for learning the gist of DnD. Someone who’s played bg3 will be more familiar than someone who hasn’t.
like its not part of the template youre given
Homebrewing just for fun is something people do also, even if they don't ever expect to use it in a campaign or anything.
Homebrew being a part of dnd is technically IN dnd
Therefore Homebrew items are in your games which are in dnd
i agree, but i think they meant as in crafting specifically isnt in dnds template, but of course it can be if you add it because of homebrew
but crafting fun
I see that
in the handbook my former dm gave me it told me how to create items and weapons
5E lacks significant crafting rules. If you want to know more about crafting stuff then head over to #dm-discussion because this is beyond the scope of this channel.
What technically constitutes homebrewing? Is it any custom content outside the handbooks? Or does it have to be like a new mechanic or system?
Homebrew is a very loose term
I’d say any custom item or creature mechanics and systems count as Homebrew
id say its like anything that you makeup that isnt official lore/mechanic/rule
But that’s my interpretation
Yeah. Pretty much any custom content that's not in an official book. Though rules changes are often called House Rules instead of homebrew. And people don't 100% agree on where the line is between homebrew and 3rd party content
It definitely helps to learn the basics before going too wild
Basically, yes. Sorry it took a while
Hey, me and my girlfriend are looking to get into dnd, but we haven't played in years and could use help relearning. That and if I could get help dming I'd greatly appreciate it
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice and tips.

so how do i make a charector
Hello! i hope everyone is having a wonderful night, i am a freshly new to this community in general but got interested in it from watching deminsions 20 and critical role, I hhopesomeone would help learn the ropes and gain a better understand of the games and of the stories it tells ?
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).

So where do I go to try and make or meet up with a party to set up a campaign
Check #find-a-game
Anything in particular that you want to know?
Well looking for a dm and doing a campaign I tried to do the thing but couldn’t get it to work cause I have no idea
With looking for a DM In this server specifically, here are your options:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign in #adventurers-league , then check out #1050206572535623690
What was it that you were having trouble with?
I’m looking for a dm and doing that like fill out form
Awesome.
After you have a post made I recommend being proactive in your search by following up on some of the options I listed.
Main reason is that there are more players than there are DMs. As such DMs will have an easier time finding players than DMs looking for DMs.
Are you new with D&D or have you played before?
I have played before
You said you tried doing a campaign, do you mean that you tried DMing?
No i haven’t I was usually a player
Yo
Hey

I consider myself new to the community and would want to know where to find campaigns for new players
Oh thanks
oh good somone in the same boat as me. im also a newcomer
Ive been in several campaigns, but i still consider myself a newbue
This highlights some of the options available to people on the server.
Newbie*
Only with friends, never in a public setting liek this
For in person games, I also recommend going to the local library, game shop, and conventions as those tend to some kind of tabletop events.
👍
Hi, im a newbie in that I have yet to sucessfully join a game, I know a lot about dnd in terms of classes and rules and im obssed with dnd shows like critcal role and dimension 20 but can never seem to find a game to join. I live in the middle of pratically nowhere and do collage all online so finding a in person game for me is impossible and I avoided trying to find online games until now because of me being on exreemly toxic discord servers a couple years back that made me go off of discord and social media in general for years until recently. my brother wouldnt even let me join his games becasue of how his toxic players would affect me. I finally decided to try to go back on it and now after leqaring about dnd almost 3 years ago I real;ly want to fianlly start playing online games
oh ok
It sucks that you've had such a tough time finding a game.
Like with anything in regards to dealing with internet it's important to be cautious not anxious.
Take your time to learn what's out there.
When it comes to dnd games, establish lines and veils.
Learn about safety tools and how to use them to help facilitate a safe and welcoming enviroment.
It regards to discord servers, there are some signs that help you know if a the server is a welcoming one.
- Having server rules and guidelines for etiquette and behavior.
- A server having moderators
- Promoting to be a LGBTQIA+ safe environment.
- Showing some form of communication between the admins and the community such as a feedback forum.
hello
I do have a friend group I can play with however we have such busy schedules that working out times to play is very difficult
Hello!
Hi!
how is every one. im new to dnd ive played once but still dont under stand much so im hear to learn
That makes it hard. I created an almost entirely fleshed out world and was waiting to play for 10 months. Finally I found a group and we all have similair schedules. Sometimes you need to find new people to play with with similair hours (if possible). That is what I did and I can truly say it is the most fun I have had in dnd with these new players
How can we help 🙂
well first i dint even know if i made my character sheet right
i used dnd help things on the sight but theres a lot going on
Have you used dnd beyond? it is the easiest way to do it in my opinion, especially for new players
yea thats what i used
Can you send me acopy of your character sheet?
yea

It happens lol. Best advice for beginners: Play Baldurs gate lol
Yep, important to note there are key differences in the rules.
I believe we have a bot response specifically for players that are coming in from playing Baldurs Gate 3.

we are all noobs here haha
Yes some big rules are different, but in terms of figuring out some basic class understandings, character creation (stats) and action, bonus action concepts it is very helpful (in my opinion)
If you need help with creating a character, feel free to ask question.
There is also #character-discussion and #optimization if you have more in depth questions.
That's okay. Everyone was new to the game at some point.
Are there other sites to make character sheets other than dnd beyond? Because the stuff they have is quite restricting for free users
And im not sure if i want to fork up the cash out of my wallet
I typically recommend using dnd beyond because it is vey new player friendly.
And if there is a specific build you want to do, the site gives you option to buy specific content from the books.
Plus with the free content alone you'll get alot of mileage out of it.
If you're trying to get a specific race and subclass, at most it's going to cost you $5 USD.
$1.99 each
Oh my god
im guessing not many people come on here to look for people to do runs with any more
i dont know
Can you clarify what you mean?
I have a lot of free time on my hands so im looking to find a game
Check #find-a-game

im sorry what the way to say it then
if what i said was wrong how was i supposed to say it
typically DND is played in a long-form, over a 'campaign'
@errant shard Can't access english one sites, but the main advice is to start as martial class.
ight got it
dnd beyond is the official site
tbh might just use one of the starter sheets i got with this set
You bought the starter set?
was on sale for 10$ so i decided to get it
only the basic starter stuff
planning on getting some of the books when i get more money
what books woukd u recommens
player's handbook is the basic
but you can also read all the basic rules for free online
The main 3 are the players handbook, dungeon master guide, and monster manual.
The latter 2 though you only need really if you intend on DMing
Question, would I be more enticing to play dnd with if I mentioned that I had foundry in which my players/DMs could use?
the player's handbook just gives a bunch more character options
Having foundry is Moreso something that the DM needs more than the players
If the dm has foundry the players can join for free
Yeah but could I not make it so that one person could log in as the GM instead of me?
That I'm not too sure of
When I open up foundry, im able to log in as gamemmaster or any of the other profiles, so I think if I let someone else log in as GM I could be a player
hi
Hello
how do i join a game

Does players get all cantrips by default, or a chosen few?
a chosen few
As seen by the 'cantrips known' column on the class tables of classes that know cantrips or subclasses that provide them, or in the Spellcasting or Pact Magic traits of such classes saying they get 2 or 3 (or 4 for Sorcerer) cantrips.
Hey, I'm using a premade campaign to play with my players. At one point there's a trap.
"Following the bridge, immediately after is a pressure triggered trap that is triggered by anyone over 120 lbs. If triggered, anyone in that 5x5 ft. square is pelted with rocks, suffering 1d6 bludgeoning damage. Disarming the trap yields 10 XP to the one who disarmed it."
It says that disarming the trap rewards the player, but it doesnt say how does a player disarm it. Is it common knowledge I might have missed?
Unless there are specific instructions on how to disarm the trap, you as the DM can decide what can/will work and what the Difficulty Challenge is for those. Also this would be a great question for #dm-discussion.
Some possible ways of disarming the trap: Sleight of Hand (Dexterity) check to disable the trap mechanism, Strength (Athletics) check to rip the trap apart so quickly/efficiently it doesn't go off, etc.
Okayy, thank you, but for the players to do these checks, they would need to know that there is a trap
So check their passive perceptions/investiagtion (10 + wisdom modifier for passive perception, 10 + intelligence modifier for passive investigation) and if you feel it's high enough they can spot it without rolling if you want. Or you can have the group make a group perception check - everyone rolls a perception check and you take the average of it and if it's high enough they spot the trap.
To ensure that group checks don't alert the group to everything, make sure to randomly have the group make similar checks even if there's no danger whatsoever.
For further DM'ing advice, please check with the folks in #dm-discussion.
okay, thank you so much!
Hmmm.
Does everyone in the party level at the same rate?
Xp is split usually yes
Depends on the dm / the campaign though
How does the leveling typically work is it a set numbers of monsters, or encounters?
Either the DM awards XP based on the difficulty of a challenge (be it a combat encounter, puzzle, social encounter etc) and you level up once you reach a certain amount of XP, or the DM announces at certain key points (often call milestones) that the party has levelled up
Thanks that's very helpful everyone
for full casters? im a cleric 3 with +4 wisdom so i can prepare 7 spells? and can those spells be any mix of first and second level?
Yes
How do I find a game first timer ⏲️

i just played my first game and me and my party have make it to a cave but the things that make me happy my dm said i could be a dragon and am a Bronze Dragon Wyrmling
a little too op for a level 1 but he go to neft me somehow i hope kind of but i don't if i get any skill or anything lol so maybe i don't need a neft idk am new to dnd
I'm glad you are having fun, and I definitely don't want to take that away from you, but generally speaking I think its a bad idea to play your first game of D&D that far outside the normal rules of the game. I reccomend that people learn the rules normally and use them a few times at least before trying to make changes
Hey, so it's been a while lol must be about 15/20 years since I last played d&d but it was different d&d to what I've seen on podcasts etc.. think it was advanced d&d I still have all my dice and character sheets, I'm just intrigued and open to the idea of getting back into it wether it be online or meet up just looking for some advice and someone to point me in the right direction could potentially have my brother and a friend interested too but essentially we will all be very new players.

Welcome! The bot post above has some great resources for you. I would highly recommend you read through the Basic Rules at least. The current version of D&D is called 5th Edition (5e) and it is VERY different from Advanced D&D, so you'll basically be starting from scratch
You'll notice 5e is a lot more simplified, accessible, and intuitive than older editions, though, so you can pick it up nice and quick if you put in the effort!
Absolutely
yeah
I'm new how do you play

The rules are available in text form above, and you can also find a link to short videos explaining various parts of the rules.
The short answer is one person is the DM who controls the world and all things in it except for the players, who each control one character. The DM describes a situation, the PCs decide what they want to do, dice are rolled to determine success/failure.
So I want to find a group specific to my city is that possible?
Yes, it's possible.
My recommendation is to go to your local library, visit your local game shop, and attend anime and game conventions at your local city.
sorry to bother you guys, but i really want to get into dnd. people have told me I'd love it but i don't know anything about it. like nothing nothing. i know it's annoying and you probably get this kinda thing a lot but I really really want to try it

ah thank you
cheers
idk why but i expected dnd players to be gatekeepy but you guys are nice
Once you give the rules a quick read-through, if you have any specific questions, we'd be more than happy to help. That's what this channel is here for. But its always easier for us if you ask specific questions like "what is an ability modifier?" or "how do I make an attack roll?" rather than broad ones like "how do I play D&D?"
yeah i get that, sorry
it's kinda hard to grasp all the mechanics on paper, I'm more of a kinesthetic learner
do you recommend the Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle for starter players?
Well, certainly nothing beats actually trying it for yourself, but perhaps videos would be a good way to at least get your foot in the door until you're ready to join a group and give it a shot?
if there's like a vid of a dnd game with someone breaking it ddown explaining what's going on that'd be fantastic
but idk I'll watch the vids link and come back to u
ive really got into the dnd style of baldurs gate but really wanna play just dnd any classes i should stay away from as a complete newbie or they all newbie friendly?
some like wizard or druid are a bit more complicated but since this isnt a competetive game, it doesnt matter too much
play what excites you
It depends on how you're getting into the game. Spellcasting is tricky but it's definitely learnable. Some folks find it easier, though, if they have a friend help them through this process. If you're learning solo, though, the martial classes (fighter, rogue, monk, and barbarian) have the fewest mechanics to grasp.
But as above, play what you like. Some just have a steeper learning curve, that's all.
cool - appriecte the help, just need play basically?
hii
Is this server 13+
Discord as a whole is 13+, isn't it?
Discord itself is 13+, and this server follows discord guidelines
Yay!
Hey I've recently become interested in starting to play D&D the only problem is I have zero clue what I'm doing have nobody i know also interested in and haven't got a clue where to start. Thankyou in advance for any help anyone is able to give me.

welcome! the bot post above has some very helpful links and resources to get you started
I’m kinda stumped so it PC based correct? I get the whole dice role and character making but what am I limited too
You can play in person or online. How you play online depends on the DM.
D&D is a "tabletop" game, not a PC game. We have tools to play it over the internet, but most of those function as glorified pieces of paper. D&D is, at its core, played in the imagination
Originally the game was played around a table, hence "tabletop role-playing game," using paper, pencils, and dice.
D&D as a game is very flexible
How you play in person or online largely depends on the Dungeon Master (DM). If you play in person you can go very minimum with just paper and dice or as elaborate (and very expensive) miniature sets and characters. Similarly, online you can just use Zoom or Discord to talk/text each other and using just your imagaination or use a virtual tabletop (VTT) app and have 2D/3D battle maps.
what bonus to hit does spiritual weapon have if im a cleric?
Your wisdom bonus plus your proficiency bonus.
is "aid" any good other than rest casting?
yeah, if 3 allies are unconscious its an excellent spell for getting them all back up
in later levels when 2nd level spells are less of a commodity its just a great thing to cast every morning too
also for rest casting it, is it fair to say i could sleep seven hours wake up cast it and go back to sleep so i get t for seven hours that day?
That is up to your DM
By the rules, if you were taking the last watch during a long rest you could do that
Yeah, you can target yourself as one of those 3
ok last one, let say the creature has 6 health i cast aid to go to 11
now the creature takes 5 dmg adn then aid ends
is the creautre on 1 or 6 health?
If the Aid spell ends (most commonly by the 8 hour duration ending) the target's maximum hit points would revert to their original value. If your maximum hit points are reduced, your current hit points aren't affected unless you would have more hit points than your maximum would allow
The aid spell wouldn't end from taking any amount of damage (unless you're dead)
Hello, I've joined to ask if there are any websites that sell neat dnd collectible items? I couldn't find any myself and wanted to know if you guys have any in mind. Thank you in advance!
You may want to check with the folks in #merch-and-dice as that's more focussed on the collectible side of D&D
Okay thank you
How do I get into d and d if no one I know plays
if im a light cleric, do the spells that light clerics learn such as light or fireball count for my total known spells/cantrips?
No
